Thieves will steal our cars, our valuables,

0:00:020:00:05

just about anything they can get their hands on.

0:00:050:00:09

To cut down on crime and antisocial behaviour,

0:00:090:00:11

the police and other agencies are using new tactics and technology

0:00:110:00:16

where the bad guys actually get caught in the act.

0:00:160:00:19

Brilliant footage. Police officers love CCTV.

0:00:190:00:22

Local councils, shops and businesses are laying some traps of their own.

0:00:220:00:26

As soon as he walked into the picture I knew who he was.

0:00:260:00:29

And the general public, too, can help unsuspecting crooks

0:00:290:00:32

get their comeuppance.

0:00:320:00:33

We definitely needed proof.

0:00:330:00:34

You won't get away with it. You might as well pack up.

0:00:340:00:37

It made him swallow his pride. It was brilliant.

0:00:370:00:39

So, anyone who's up to no good had better think twice.

0:00:390:00:42

They might just get caught red-handed.

0:00:440:00:46

Today, a shocking attack on a 60-year-old cashier.

0:00:520:00:57

She actually doing the scene out of "Psycho"

0:00:570:00:59

where she's stabbing the door with a knife.

0:00:590:01:02

He's attacked by a woman wielding a knife,

0:01:020:01:04

but the courageous man locks the door to stop her getting out.

0:01:040:01:09

Also, today, someone has had their fingers in the till at this pub,

0:01:090:01:12

but who is it?

0:01:120:01:13

I bet all eyes were actually on me!

0:01:130:01:16

Is one of their friends or workmates a thief?

0:01:160:01:19

A tricky situation at Tricky's bar.

0:01:190:01:21

And, it's not "Bridezilla", this is a bloke.

0:01:230:01:25

He's caught on camera nicking wedding dresses,

0:01:250:01:28

but is about to have his big day ruined.

0:01:280:01:30

Ashford in Kent.

0:01:400:01:43

We're watching a CCTV camera footage

0:01:430:01:45

from inside a 24-hour convenience store.

0:01:450:01:48

It's nearly 5am and Michael is manning the shop on his own.

0:01:490:01:54

As a 60-year-old grandfather, he likes the night shifts

0:01:540:01:57

because they are usually quiet.

0:01:570:01:59

But this night is about to become one he'll never, ever forget.

0:01:590:02:04

A young woman in a hoodie enters the shop.

0:02:040:02:07

Then, suddenly, she turns on Michael demanding money from the till

0:02:070:02:11

and she's armed with a carving knife.

0:02:110:02:14

But if she expects to frighten Michael, she's very much mistaken.

0:02:150:02:20

I went to her, "I'm not going to give you anything.

0:02:200:02:23

"You won't get away with it. You might as well stop now and pack up".

0:02:230:02:26

A vicious struggle starts

0:02:260:02:27

and it's the beginning of a bizarre series of events which will

0:02:270:02:30

see Michael locked in with a violent and unpredictable woman

0:02:300:02:34

who swings between attacking him and tending to his wounds.

0:02:340:02:38

One minute she's standing there trying to kill me

0:02:380:02:40

and the next minute she is trying to mop up the blood.

0:02:400:02:43

Michael is locked in the shop with a Jekyll and Hyde attacker.

0:02:430:02:46

I can tell just from seeing Michael, he's been subject to

0:02:460:02:49

something very horrific.

0:02:490:02:51

This local store and petrol station is on one of the main roads

0:02:590:03:02

that runs through Ashford.

0:03:020:03:05

Michael has worked here for the last six years

0:03:050:03:07

and with an ever-expanding family, he has no intention of slowing down.

0:03:070:03:13

I'm 60 years of age and my youngest son has just informed me

0:03:130:03:16

that my tenth grandchild is on the way,

0:03:160:03:20

which I wasn't very pleased about.

0:03:200:03:23

Especially with Christmas and everything else,

0:03:230:03:25

it does become expensive.

0:03:250:03:27

But, er... No, I love kids.

0:03:270:03:30

The shop is open 24 hours a day

0:03:300:03:32

and Michael often works the night shift on his own.

0:03:320:03:35

Apart from having to deal with the odd shoplifter,

0:03:350:03:38

he's never had any serious trouble.

0:03:380:03:40

I wouldn't say that I would be apprehensive or worried about

0:03:400:03:43

the next person who walks through the shop being an armed robber.

0:03:430:03:47

No, I don't even think about that.

0:03:470:03:50

Generally speaking, Ashford is a pretty safe place to be.

0:03:500:03:54

Like every town, it gets its excitement from time to time,

0:03:540:03:57

but we don't often have as serious a crime as an armed robbery.

0:03:570:04:03

As were about to see, that's exactly what happens in Michael's shop.

0:04:030:04:07

He's nearing the end of his shift at 5am

0:04:090:04:12

and is waiting for the morning's milk delivery when the woman enters.

0:04:120:04:15

My first impression was that she was just another customer.

0:04:150:04:18

She was wearing stuff you would expect because the weather

0:04:180:04:21

was still pretty cold - a scarf around her neck, hoodie.

0:04:210:04:24

But she is not just another customer.

0:04:240:04:26

She asked me to give her it. And I said, "Give you what?"

0:04:260:04:30

And she went, "Give me the money".

0:04:300:04:32

And to back up her demand,

0:04:320:04:33

from her pocket she pulled out a nine-inch carving knife.

0:04:330:04:37

I realised that she was being serious.

0:04:370:04:39

Although shaken, Michael keeps a cool head and, at first,

0:04:390:04:42

tries to reason with the woman.

0:04:420:04:44

"Don't be silly, love", I said. "You're on CCTV camera.

0:04:440:04:47

"I'm not going to give you anything. You won't get away with it.

0:04:470:04:50

"You might as well stop now and pack up".

0:04:500:04:52

She ignores his advice and lunges at him with the knife blade,

0:04:520:04:55

but she gets a surprise herself because Michael grabs her wrist.

0:04:550:05:00

The company I work for, their attitude is,

0:05:000:05:02

if someone draws a knife, you stand back, give them what they want.

0:05:020:05:06

That's all well and good, but they're not drawing the knife

0:05:060:05:09

on the company, they're actually drawing the knife on me.

0:05:090:05:13

The woman starts to jab more wildly at him

0:05:130:05:16

but Michael dodges the blade and stands firm.

0:05:160:05:19

At one point, she actually manages to make contact,

0:05:190:05:21

but it didn't actually pierce the skin.

0:05:210:05:24

He presses a panic alarm which alerts police to the robbery

0:05:240:05:27

and squad cars are dispatched by Ashford police.

0:05:270:05:30

But the woman is getting more agitated.

0:05:300:05:33

The high counter is stopping her from getting to Michael

0:05:330:05:36

so she tries to smash through a security door to his left.

0:05:360:05:40

I managed to get my foot against the door to stop her from coming in.

0:05:400:05:43

She's actually doing the scene out of "Psycho"

0:05:430:05:46

where she is stabbing the door with the knife because she can't get in.

0:05:460:05:50

It's a terrifying moment,

0:05:500:05:51

but Michael manages to block the door and dial 999.

0:05:510:05:56

I left the phone ringing so that whoever picked the phone up

0:05:560:05:59

could actually hear what was going on.

0:05:590:06:01

At the other end,

0:06:010:06:02

the emergency call-taker hears there's a knife involved

0:06:020:06:05

and updates the police officers who are already rushing to the scene.

0:06:050:06:09

When you are informed that there is potentially a knife involved,

0:06:090:06:12

the adrenaline does kick in.

0:06:120:06:13

But, suddenly, the woman seems to give up and heads for the exit

0:06:130:06:16

and this is when Michael does something extraordinarily brave.

0:06:160:06:21

Seeing there are some people outside the door,

0:06:210:06:23

he's afraid they'll be in danger and he presses a hidden button

0:06:230:06:27

that locks the door.

0:06:270:06:28

She was threatening them through the door.

0:06:280:06:30

If I had let her go, she might... She could have gone and done anything.

0:06:300:06:34

A courageous action to protect other people,

0:06:340:06:37

but it means he's trapped inside with a violent attacker

0:06:370:06:40

and now she really wants to get at Michael.

0:06:400:06:43

She tries to climb the counter

0:06:430:06:45

and this gives him a slim chance to disarm her.

0:06:450:06:48

She put the knife in her hand on the counter to climb.

0:06:480:06:51

I proceeded to grab her wrist with my left arm.

0:06:510:06:54

As they frantically tussle, the woman grabs at Michael's neck

0:06:540:06:58

then she violently yanks the blade free...

0:06:580:07:00

..leaving a large cut on his hand.

0:07:020:07:04

But what happens next is truly astonishing.

0:07:060:07:09

After even more stabbing, suddenly she stops.

0:07:090:07:13

When she realised she'd cut me,

0:07:130:07:15

she had a change of heart.

0:07:150:07:17

The woman even lays down her knife and goes off to get a can of drink.

0:07:170:07:21

Michael moves the knife away.

0:07:210:07:23

There's quite a bit of blood on the floor and that, in itself,

0:07:230:07:26

I think was enough to convince her that, you know, it might be bad.

0:07:260:07:29

The woman fetches some kitchen roll to help Michael nurse the wound.

0:07:290:07:33

One minute she's standing there trying to kill me,

0:07:330:07:36

and the next minute she is trying to help me rather than hurt me.

0:07:360:07:39

But, sadly, this show of concern is short-lived.

0:07:390:07:42

The woman gets fired up again

0:07:420:07:44

when she sees more people outside the door.

0:07:440:07:46

She's realised there's no escape.

0:07:480:07:51

But now, she picks up a glass bottle to use as a weapon.

0:07:510:07:54

She was walking up and down the shop

0:07:540:07:56

threatening the people outside with a broken bottle.

0:07:560:07:59

Later, the police race to the shop after Michael's alert.

0:08:000:08:04

I see that she had a weapon

0:08:040:08:06

and from her demeanour she'd be ready to use it on us.

0:08:060:08:08

They have riot equipment and pepper spray.

0:08:080:08:11

The police somehow have to get in to disarm this violent woman

0:08:110:08:15

without Michael or anyone else, including themselves, getting hurt.

0:08:150:08:19

Now, this isn't a ghost, it's a chap in Swansea who hasn't

0:08:240:08:28

a ghost of a chance of getting away with, er, a crime of fashion.

0:08:280:08:32

This petty thief with a pile of wedding gowns has just kicked

0:08:380:08:41

in the back door of a bridal shop and snatched a number of dresses.

0:08:410:08:45

Maybe he has seven brothers who are marrying seven brides.

0:08:470:08:51

Whatever the reason,

0:08:510:08:52

I'm sure he'd like to draw a veil over this particular CCTV camera.

0:08:520:08:57

These pictures helped police to track the man down

0:08:580:09:00

and they raid his home the next day.

0:09:000:09:03

They find the dresses stuffed unceremoniously

0:09:030:09:07

into an under-stairs cupboard.

0:09:070:09:09

They charge him with illegally attempting to have and to hold them.

0:09:090:09:13

He is sentenced to nine and a half months in prison for this

0:09:130:09:16

and one other offence.

0:09:160:09:18

Hopefully, from now on, he'll learn to love, honour and obey the law.

0:09:180:09:23

Next, from weddings to funerals

0:09:270:09:29

and the last place you'd expect to find crime would be a crematorium,

0:09:290:09:34

which makes the actions of these heartless thieves

0:09:340:09:36

even more shocking.

0:09:360:09:37

Liverpool.

0:09:430:09:45

Stealing from funerals has started to become a problem.

0:09:450:09:49

You'd like to think security was something you could have

0:09:490:09:52

quite low down on the agenda for cemeteries.

0:09:520:09:54

And security is the last thing Chris thought he'd need

0:09:540:09:57

at his mum's funeral.

0:09:570:09:59

We went to put her in the hearse and then I noticed

0:09:590:10:02

two people that were there had no connection with the family.

0:10:020:10:07

And the mystery guests are not there to pay their respects.

0:10:080:10:11

Springwood Crematorium is part of Allerton Cemetery in Liverpool,

0:10:190:10:22

one of the largest cemeteries in the UK.

0:10:220:10:25

Chris Jennat regularly visits his family's memorial.

0:10:280:10:31

It's where his grandfather was buried, but also where

0:10:320:10:35

he comes to remember his sister, his dad and, most recently, his mum.

0:10:350:10:39

You only have one mum, don't you? So, she was great.

0:10:400:10:43

She'd have done anything for you, you know?

0:10:430:10:46

Mum Bridget was adored by her five children and many grandchildren.

0:10:460:10:51

When she succumbed to pneumonia at the age of 83,

0:10:510:10:54

the family were grief stricken.

0:10:540:10:56

It was a shock for everyone because she was a character.

0:10:560:10:59

Some of the one-liners she used to come out with, you know?

0:10:590:11:02

We were a very, very close family.

0:11:020:11:05

The family arranged the funeral.

0:11:050:11:07

Some very special blue and white flower arrangements

0:11:070:11:09

are ordered in her memory.

0:11:090:11:11

It's the last thing you've bought for your mum.

0:11:110:11:14

So, whatever the expense was, it doesn't matter, does it, really?

0:11:150:11:19

It's agreed that Bridget should be cremated

0:11:190:11:22

at Springwood Crematorium that's run by Liverpool City Council.

0:11:220:11:25

It's the busiest of our two crematoria in Liverpool.

0:11:250:11:29

It's an area of peace and tranquillity

0:11:290:11:32

and remembrance for many families.

0:11:320:11:35

Dale Willis has helped run all the city's cemeteries for 14 years

0:11:350:11:39

and that includes their protection.

0:11:390:11:42

We do have a security presence in all the cemeteries.

0:11:420:11:44

We have all the cemeteries locked at night and opened the next morning.

0:11:440:11:49

But we do have pockets of antisocial behaviour.

0:11:490:11:52

And Dale begins to notice a very upsetting trend.

0:11:520:11:55

We had a couple of reports of flowers going missing

0:11:550:11:58

and I am shocked that people would do something

0:11:580:12:01

that would impact on a family in that way.

0:12:010:12:03

After talking it over with local funeral directors,

0:12:030:12:06

Dale decides to take action.

0:12:060:12:09

There's only one way to resolve that...

0:12:090:12:11

To install CCTV equipment.

0:12:110:12:13

Two cameras are installed and signs are put up to make the public aware.

0:12:160:12:20

A few weeks later, it's the day of Bridget's funeral.

0:12:240:12:27

A couple of onlookers catch Chris's eye

0:12:270:12:29

as the coffin starts the journey to the crematorium.

0:12:290:12:32

We went to put her in the hearse and then I noticed, er, two people

0:12:320:12:36

that were there had no connection with the family.

0:12:360:12:40

I thought nothing about it.

0:12:400:12:42

Then the funeral got under way - a great service -

0:12:420:12:44

then we came to Springwood Crematorium.

0:12:440:12:46

The flowers were put in a place just outside the crem'.

0:12:460:12:49

Following the ceremony, the family return home.

0:12:490:12:52

They plan to move the flowers to the memorial the next day.

0:12:520:12:55

I got the phone call saying that the flowers had been pinched.

0:12:550:13:00

Chris is appalled by the news.

0:13:000:13:03

It's absolutely disgusting, isn't it?

0:13:030:13:06

To think someone could do such a low thing, like.

0:13:060:13:09

It actually gives another dimension of stress

0:13:090:13:12

and anxiety for the family at what is already a very difficult time.

0:13:120:13:17

Staff at the crematorium check the CCTV recording

0:13:170:13:21

and this is what they see.

0:13:210:13:23

It's early evening on the same day as the funeral. A car pulls up.

0:13:260:13:30

Two women get out.

0:13:310:13:33

One opens the boot while the other makes a beeline

0:13:330:13:36

for the family's large blue and white flowers.

0:13:360:13:38

It seems as if they knew the tributes to target.

0:13:400:13:43

The crematorium hands the footage over to Merseyside Police

0:13:450:13:48

who identify the women from their car registration.

0:13:480:13:51

They are arrested.

0:13:510:13:53

Chris gets to see the footage and thinks he's seen the women before.

0:13:530:13:57

I realised they were on the corner of the street as we were

0:13:570:14:00

bringing my mum out.

0:14:000:14:02

During the women's arrests,

0:14:020:14:04

the police discover flower arranging paraphernalia in one of their homes.

0:14:040:14:08

It seems they were using Bridget's flowers to sell on as new tributes.

0:14:080:14:14

Words can't describe what they've done.

0:14:140:14:16

But there's a full description of what they've done in court.

0:14:160:14:19

The woman who picked up the flowers has previous convictions

0:14:210:14:25

and is sentenced to ten weeks in prison.

0:14:250:14:27

Her accomplice is given eight weeks, suspended for 12 months.

0:14:290:14:34

Both have to pay compensation.

0:14:360:14:39

It was pleasing, certainly for the family, that justice had been done.

0:14:390:14:43

We are in a position now where we're not having any thefts

0:14:430:14:46

and I that can only be seen as a positive thing.

0:14:460:14:50

My mam will be made up that they've been caught.

0:14:500:14:54

Hopefully now she's looking down and saying, "Well done!"

0:14:540:14:57

Coming up, a disappearing act at Tricky's bar when cash vanishes.

0:15:040:15:08

We were all really gobsmacked.

0:15:080:15:11

It's sleight of hand by a trusted barmaid.

0:15:110:15:14

We just couldn't believe it. Everybody was shocked.

0:15:140:15:16

Back to Ashford in Kent where, in the early hours of the morning,

0:15:250:15:29

a violent attempted robbery has been taking place in a shop.

0:15:290:15:33

This young woman is wielding a large carving knife

0:15:330:15:36

with which she's been attacking Michael, the 60-year-old cashier.

0:15:360:15:40

Now, she's using a wine bottle as a weapon.

0:15:400:15:43

Michael has bravely locked her inside the shop alone with him

0:15:430:15:46

to protect the people outside and he's trying to calm her down.

0:15:460:15:50

I was saying, "I've locked the doors.

0:15:500:15:52

"They can't get in and I'm not opening the doors to let you out

0:15:520:15:55

"because you might have a go at them".

0:15:550:15:57

My idea was that I was protecting them as well as herself by keeping

0:15:570:16:01

the situation contained in the shop.

0:16:010:16:03

But the woman is having none of it and continues her threats.

0:16:030:16:07

Outside, the police have now arrived much to Michael's relief.

0:16:070:16:11

When the police turned up,

0:16:110:16:12

I was relieved to see that the end was in sight.

0:16:120:16:15

But the woman is not about to give up.

0:16:150:16:17

Now she also threatens PCs Ryan Duffy and Jason Gisby

0:16:170:16:21

who are outside the door.

0:16:210:16:23

The first thing I see is this woman with a wine bottle in her hands.

0:16:230:16:28

She appeared very agitated, very angry...

0:16:280:16:30

She smashes it against the front door.

0:16:300:16:33

..and from her demeanour, she would be ready to use it on us.

0:16:330:16:36

-But it's Michael they fear for most.

-We know Michael.

0:16:360:16:39

We've chatted to him many times in the past.

0:16:390:16:41

He appeared very distressed, very shaken up.

0:16:410:16:44

There was a risk that she would return to him.

0:16:440:16:46

It was right to get in there as quickly as possible.

0:16:460:16:49

Throughout his ordeal, Michael has kept a cool head

0:16:490:16:52

and now he signals another way in to Ryan and Jason.

0:16:520:16:56

If they went around to the other door at the back, they can get in

0:16:560:16:59

because I can open that door without her being able to get out.

0:16:590:17:03

The police get the message and equip themselves to arrest

0:17:030:17:06

the violent woman without injury to Michael or the woman or themselves.

0:17:060:17:11

Ryan gets a riot shield while Jason arms himself with pepper spray.

0:17:110:17:15

While other officers distract the woman at the front of the store,

0:17:170:17:20

Michael opens the back door by pressing a button.

0:17:200:17:23

Ryan and Jason enter. Once inside, they split up.

0:17:230:17:27

Jason calls out to the woman to draw her over, but she's in no mood

0:17:270:17:30

to come quietly and walks towards him with the broken bottle.

0:17:300:17:34

Ryan steps out from an aisle behind her as she approaches Jason.

0:17:340:17:38

She was jabbing the broken bottle towards my face.

0:17:380:17:40

I instantly pulled my pepper spray and sprayed it towards her face.

0:17:400:17:44

Ryan has come behind her almost at the same time

0:17:440:17:47

and has struck her with a shield.

0:17:470:17:49

They got her down but she still struggles.

0:17:490:17:52

Just wildly throwing her hand around with this broken bottle.

0:17:520:17:56

She finally gives in and they handcuff her.

0:17:560:17:59

It's a good, safe arrest.

0:17:590:18:01

That was it, basically. All over and done with.

0:18:010:18:03

They took over and I could relax. HE LAUGHS

0:18:030:18:07

While and officer takes a look at Michael's cut hand,

0:18:070:18:10

the police help the woman recover from the pepper spray.

0:18:100:18:14

She was polite, she spoke to us.

0:18:140:18:16

When a person has been exposed to pepper spray

0:18:160:18:18

we have a duty of care to them and after-care,

0:18:180:18:21

so we usually sit them still,

0:18:210:18:23

advise them not to rub their eyes and give them other advice.

0:18:230:18:26

The woman is taken to the police station

0:18:260:18:28

and Michael goes home.

0:18:280:18:29

He turns up for work again the very next day,

0:18:310:18:34

but he soon realises that the robbery

0:18:340:18:36

has affected him more than he thinks.

0:18:360:18:38

I couldn't stop crying, so...

0:18:380:18:41

erm...they sent me home.

0:18:410:18:43

I think it was just shock, basically, over the next two days.

0:18:430:18:47

I went and saw a therapist for a few weeks to sort of, like,

0:18:470:18:51

get it out of my system.

0:18:510:18:53

Now, I don't think nothing of it.

0:18:530:18:55

You know, it happened.

0:18:550:18:57

It's gone and done and, er, life goes on.

0:18:570:18:59

It's a reminder of exactly how much these crimes

0:18:590:19:02

affect the innocent people involved.

0:19:020:19:05

In court, she pleads guilty and is sentenced to six years in prison.

0:19:080:19:12

Michael is given a special commendation for his courage

0:19:170:19:20

and determination to stop the violent woman

0:19:200:19:23

and contain her safely until the police could arrive.

0:19:230:19:26

He was receives a Certificate of Bravery

0:19:260:19:29

from the High Sheriff of Kent's office and a special cash award.

0:19:290:19:33

I suppose, to get any reward is a nice feeling.

0:19:330:19:37

To get one you can actually display on the wall

0:19:370:19:40

and say to your children, your grandchildren,

0:19:400:19:42

"That's your grandad", you know, that's got to be nice.

0:19:420:19:46

That is nice.

0:19:460:19:48

Mercifully, it's very unlikely any of us

0:19:530:19:56

will ever face an attack like that.

0:19:560:19:58

Michael bravely took on his attacker,

0:19:580:20:01

but is that wise to do so if someone is wielding a weapon?

0:20:010:20:04

My advice would be to try and back away.

0:20:040:20:07

Don't try and intervene.

0:20:070:20:09

Try and call 999 if at all possible,

0:20:090:20:10

if it's not going to aggravate the person with the knife.

0:20:100:20:13

You might not be able to talk to us, but we can still listen.

0:20:130:20:16

We can still hear what's going on.

0:20:160:20:18

We can figure out who the phone belongs to

0:20:180:20:20

and we can start to do the work to locate you and get help.

0:20:200:20:23

You need to keep your distance from somebody.

0:20:230:20:25

We call it the "fighting arc", so we put our arms out and if somebody

0:20:250:20:29

is at an arm's length from you, then that gives you a fighting chance.

0:20:290:20:33

Think calmly and then look for your best escape route

0:20:330:20:37

if it's safe to do so.

0:20:370:20:38

If it's not safe and you need to engage in some kind of conversation

0:20:380:20:42

with that person to keep them calm and de-escalate

0:20:420:20:46

any kind of threat until the police arrive, then do that.

0:20:460:20:49

We'd all like to think we could trust the people we work with.

0:20:540:20:57

After all, we spend a lot of time with them.

0:20:570:20:59

So what if some money went missing

0:20:590:21:01

and it could only be someone who is close to us?

0:21:010:21:04

Accrington, Lancashire.

0:21:100:21:12

A tricky issue at a bar called Tricky's.

0:21:130:21:16

Totally, totally shocked.

0:21:160:21:17

In all the times I've had pubs in, say, over 30 years,

0:21:170:21:20

it's the first time anything like that's happened.

0:21:200:21:23

Money has been disappearing from this popular local pub,

0:21:230:21:26

but who is taking it?

0:21:260:21:27

I bet all eyes were actually on me!

0:21:270:21:30

The owner has a trick up his sleeve, a hidden camera.

0:21:300:21:33

It looks like a smoke alarm.

0:21:330:21:35

The camera is built inside so you can't see it.

0:21:350:21:37

The camera is there in case of trouble at the bar,

0:21:370:21:40

not for secretly spying on the people he knows and trusts.

0:21:400:21:43

Difficult, very difficult.

0:21:430:21:45

Accrington.

0:21:490:21:51

Famed for its football team

0:21:510:21:53

and making the hardest building bricks in the world,

0:21:530:21:56

it's also home to Tricky's.

0:21:560:21:58

-It's named after its owner.

-Well, sort of.

0:21:580:22:02

It's Richard, so the nickname for Richard is Dick.

0:22:020:22:05

Dickie, Dickie Mint, Tricky, Tricky Mint,

0:22:050:22:08

Tricky Dicky and it fell to Tricky Dicky.

0:22:080:22:11

It stayed like that so we just shortened it to Tricky,

0:22:110:22:14

and some call me things I can't say on camera!

0:22:140:22:17

After running pubs on and off for 30 years, now, at the age of 70,

0:22:170:22:22

running Tricky's is Richard's dream come true.

0:22:220:22:25

From the first time I ever came in, I've always wanted this pub

0:22:250:22:28

and I finally did get it.

0:22:280:22:29

The bar is a firm local favourite and a fun place to be.

0:22:290:22:34

Tricky's is the place where you've got all your regulars.

0:22:340:22:38

Sunday afternoons is brilliant. In fact, every day is.

0:22:380:22:41

I love working here.

0:22:410:22:43

Love working here.

0:22:430:22:45

Richard's staff are all local, including three young sisters.

0:22:450:22:48

Some others, like Sharon, have known him for years.

0:22:480:22:51

It's one big, happy family.

0:22:510:22:54

He's not a pushover, but he's not...

0:22:540:22:57

He's not strict and, you know, he lets...

0:22:570:22:59

As long as we're doing our job.

0:22:590:23:01

Even this easy-going and trusting boss

0:23:010:23:03

had to have security cameras installed when he took the place on.

0:23:030:23:07

It's actually part of your licence now to have CCTV

0:23:070:23:11

and someone that can use it if there are any incidents.

0:23:110:23:15

So far, Richard has never needed to check footage from any

0:23:150:23:19

of the cameras, including the one in the smoke alarm overlooking the bar.

0:23:190:23:23

I even forgot it was there myself.

0:23:230:23:25

But one Friday night, that all changes.

0:23:260:23:29

Richard comes to work to find there's no £20 notes in the till.

0:23:290:23:34

At first, he's not too worried.

0:23:340:23:36

It's been a quiet night... So what?

0:23:360:23:39

Other nights are good.

0:23:390:23:40

But the next Friday isn't any better so Richard checks the coin drawer

0:23:400:23:44

to see if any of the 20s have been wrongly put in there.

0:23:440:23:47

But, no.

0:23:470:23:48

And he's shocked to discover there are coins missing, too.

0:23:480:23:52

There was £80 missing in pound coins.

0:23:520:23:55

He asks Sharon the next day about the missing money,

0:23:550:23:58

as she works the early evening shift on Fridays.

0:23:580:24:01

She said, "Check under the till.

0:24:010:24:03

"All the money's there." I'm saying, "What money? There's no money there."

0:24:030:24:07

She said, "Are you joking?

0:24:070:24:08

"I had a really good night last night up to six.

0:24:080:24:11

"There's loads of money there".

0:24:110:24:13

But there isn't. Richard can only think the worst.

0:24:130:24:16

There's a thief about and it has to be one of the people

0:24:160:24:19

he trusts like family.

0:24:190:24:21

Totally, totally shocked.

0:24:210:24:23

The most likely suspects are the Friday staff.

0:24:230:24:26

That's Sharon and a popular 21-year-old girl

0:24:260:24:29

who's one of the three sisters that worked there.

0:24:290:24:31

We've known the family for many, many years.

0:24:310:24:34

My stepdaughter is a big friend of her mother's.

0:24:340:24:38

I bet all eyes were actually on me!

0:24:380:24:41

You know? It's horrible.

0:24:410:24:43

Richard knows he must check his CCTV footage,

0:24:450:24:48

but first, he calls the staff together

0:24:480:24:51

to give the culprit a chance to own up.

0:24:510:24:53

Sharon gets the wrong end of the stick.

0:24:530:24:55

My hand went straight up!

0:24:550:24:57

I've got a bit of a thing for Pepperami.

0:24:590:25:01

So I told him, basically,

0:25:020:25:04

"You might see me with a few of them stuffed in my mouth!"

0:25:040:25:07

No-one owns up so Richard goes off to look at the footage

0:25:080:25:11

in a room on his own and this is what he sees.

0:25:110:25:15

The 21-year-old sister has just taken over the shift from Sharon.

0:25:160:25:20

She appears too busy herself with the usual barmaid duties,

0:25:200:25:24

but appearances can be deceiving,

0:25:240:25:27

because, on a closer look, she also shows some skilful sleight of hand.

0:25:270:25:32

While customers are lost in conversation,

0:25:320:25:35

the young barmaid takes four bags of £2 coins

0:25:350:25:38

out of the change drawer and puts them in her handbag.

0:25:380:25:42

That's the £80 that was missing when I checked later on in the night.

0:25:430:25:47

But that's just for starters.

0:25:470:25:49

Half an hour later, the barmaid decides she deserves another tip.

0:25:490:25:53

She lifts the drawer in the till containing the 20s,

0:25:550:25:58

grabs a handful and leaves them right next to her handbag.

0:25:580:26:02

Ten minutes later, she comes back

0:26:030:26:05

and shoves the notes inside the bag.

0:26:050:26:08

She's making room in her bag for more money.

0:26:080:26:10

She's pushing the coins to one side

0:26:100:26:12

plus the notes she's already taken.

0:26:120:26:14

After another 45 minutes,

0:26:140:26:16

the barmaid decides to get another round in.

0:26:160:26:19

A few more 20s on the house.

0:26:190:26:21

Rewinding back to her previous Friday shift,

0:26:230:26:26

he sees the same routine.

0:26:260:26:28

Pull some pints, pull some more money.

0:26:280:26:31

Richard decides it's time to call last orders.

0:26:310:26:34

He tells the rest of the staff who has been stealing.

0:26:340:26:37

We were all really gobsmacked.

0:26:370:26:38

They just couldn't believe it.

0:26:380:26:40

Everybody was shocked. The sisters were just in tears.

0:26:400:26:43

He's looked at her as a daughter, you know.

0:26:430:26:45

He even said to us, I look at her like family.

0:26:450:26:49

Richard confronts the young barmaid.

0:26:490:26:52

I asked her why. She was just crying, crying, crying,

0:26:520:26:56

as I suppose you would do when you've been found out,

0:26:560:26:59

saying she was so sorry.

0:26:590:27:00

When I said, "How much have you taken?" she said, "I don't know".

0:27:020:27:05

She's just spent it.

0:27:050:27:07

And then she went.

0:27:070:27:08

Leaving Richard with a dilemma.

0:27:100:27:12

I thought, "Well, if it's just a few hundred pounds,

0:27:130:27:16

"I'm going to ruin this kid's life,

0:27:160:27:19

"so, I'm not going to go to the police."

0:27:190:27:21

But, at that point, we didn't know what she'd taken.

0:27:210:27:24

Richard becomes less forgiving

0:27:240:27:25

when he sees the barmaid's attitude on a social media site.

0:27:250:27:29

He decides it might be better if she learns a lesson.

0:27:290:27:33

She was showing off her new dresses and designer gear

0:27:330:27:36

and bags and shoes.

0:27:360:27:38

I just thought, she is just taking the Mick here.

0:27:380:27:41

He takes action.

0:27:410:27:42

So, I went down to the police station,

0:27:420:27:44

made a formal complaint.

0:27:440:27:46

The barmaid pleads guilty.

0:27:480:27:50

She is sentenced to 12 months community supervision

0:27:510:27:54

and ordered to pay £500 in compensation.

0:27:540:27:57

Things are now a lot less tricky at Tricky's.

0:28:010:28:04

The two other sisters work here. They'll continue to work here.

0:28:040:28:07

There's nothing wrong with the girls.

0:28:070:28:08

Of the staff I've got at the moment, I think they'll be OK.

0:28:080:28:12

Although, just to be on the safe side,

0:28:120:28:14

Richard has since upgraded his CCTV system.

0:28:140:28:17

I dread to think what he's seen on them.

0:28:170:28:19

I dread to think what he's seen on them cameras with us lot!

0:28:190:28:22

We didn't know half of 'em were here!

0:28:220:28:25

Barmaids beware!

0:28:250:28:27

That's it for today.

0:28:300:28:31

Join us next time when police and the public

0:28:310:28:34

will be catching more criminals red-handed.
