As soon as he walked into the picture I knew who he was. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
And the general public, too, can help unsuspecting crooks | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
get their comeuppance. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:33
We definitely needed proof. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:34
You won't get away with it. You might as well pack up. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
It made him swallow his pride. It was brilliant. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:39
So, anyone who's up to no good had better think twice. | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
They might just get caught red-handed. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
Today, a shocking attack on a 60-year-old cashier. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:57
She actually doing the scene out of "Psycho" | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
where she's stabbing the door with a knife. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
He's attacked by a woman wielding a knife, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
but the courageous man locks the door to stop her getting out. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:09
Also, today, someone has had their fingers in the till at this pub, | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
but who is it? | 0:01:12 | 0:01:13
I bet all eyes were actually on me! | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16

A tricky situation at Tricky's bar. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:21
And, it's not "Bridezilla", this is a bloke. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
He's caught on camera nicking wedding dresses, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
but is about to have his big day ruined. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
Ashford in Kent. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
We're watching a CCTV camera footage | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
from inside a 24-hour convenience store. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
It's nearly 5am and Michael is manning the shop on his own. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:54
As a 60-year-old grandfather, he likes the night shifts | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
because they are usually quiet. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:59
But this night is about to become one he'll never, ever forget. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:04
A young woman in a hoodie enters the shop. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
Then, suddenly, she turns on Michael demanding money from the till | 0:02:07 | 0:02:11
and she's armed with a carving knife. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
But if she expects to frighten Michael, she's very much mistaken. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:20
I went to her, "I'm not going to give you anything. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
"You won't get away with it. You might as well stop now and pack up". | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
A vicious struggle starts | 0:02:26 | 0:02:27
and it's the beginning of a bizarre series of events which will | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
see Michael locked in with a violent and unpredictable woman | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
who swings between attacking him and tending to his wounds. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
One minute she's standing there trying to kill me | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
and the next minute she is trying to mop up the blood. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
Michael is locked in the shop with a Jekyll and Hyde attacker. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
I can tell just from seeing Michael, he's been subject to | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
something very horrific. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
This local store and petrol station is on one of the main roads | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
that runs through Ashford. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
Michael has worked here for the last six years | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
and with an ever-expanding family, he has no intention of slowing down. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:13
I'm 60 years of age and my youngest son has just informed me | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
that my tenth grandchild is on the way, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
which I wasn't very pleased about. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
Especially with Christmas and everything else, | 0:03:23 | 0:03:25
it does become expensive. | 0:03:25 | 0:03:27
But, er... No, I love kids. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:30
The shop is open 24 hours a day | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
and Michael often works the night shift on his own. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
Apart from having to deal with the odd shoplifter, | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
he's never had any serious trouble. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
I wouldn't say that I would be apprehensive or worried about | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
the next person who walks through the shop being an armed robber. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:47
No, I don't even think about that. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:50
Generally speaking, Ashford is a pretty safe place to be. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:54
Like every town, it gets its excitement from time to time, | 0:03:54 | 0:03:57
but we don't often have as serious a crime as an armed robbery. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:03
As were about to see, that's exactly what happens in Michael's shop. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:07
He's nearing the end of his shift at 5am | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
and is waiting for the morning's milk delivery when the woman enters. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
My first impression was that she was just another customer. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
She was wearing stuff you would expect because the weather | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
was still pretty cold - a scarf around her neck, hoodie. | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
But she is not just another customer. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
She asked me to give her it. And I said, "Give you what?" | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
And she went, "Give me the money". | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
And to back up her demand, | 0:04:32 | 0:04:33
from her pocket she pulled out a nine-inch carving knife. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
I realised that she was being serious. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:39
Although shaken, Michael keeps a cool head and, at first, | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
tries to reason with the woman. | 0:04:42 | 0:04:44
"Don't be silly, love", I said. "You're on CCTV camera. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
"I'm not going to give you anything. You won't get away with it. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:50
"You might as well stop now and pack up". | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
She ignores his advice and lunges at him with the knife blade, | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
but she gets a surprise herself because Michael grabs her wrist. | 0:04:55 | 0:05:00
The company I work for, their attitude is, | 0:05:00 | 0:05:02
if someone draws a knife, you stand back, give them what they want. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
That's all well and good, but they're not drawing the knife | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
on the company, they're actually drawing the knife on me. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:13
The woman starts to jab more wildly at him | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
but Michael dodges the blade and stands firm. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
At one point, she actually manages to make contact, | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
but it didn't actually pierce the skin. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
He presses a panic alarm which alerts police to the robbery | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
and squad cars are dispatched by Ashford police. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
But the woman is getting more agitated. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
The high counter is stopping her from getting to Michael | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
so she tries to smash through a security door to his left. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:40
I managed to get my foot against the door to stop her from coming in. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
She's actually doing the scene out of "Psycho" | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
where she is stabbing the door with the knife because she can't get in. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
It's a terrifying moment, | 0:05:50 | 0:05:51
but Michael manages to block the door and dial 999. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:56
I left the phone ringing so that whoever picked the phone up | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
could actually hear what was going on. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:01
At the other end, | 0:06:01 | 0:06:02
the emergency call-taker hears there's a knife involved | 0:06:02 | 0:06:05
and updates the police officers who are already rushing to the scene. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
When you are informed that there is potentially a knife involved, | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
the adrenaline does kick in. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:13
But, suddenly, the woman seems to give up and heads for the exit | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
and this is when Michael does something extraordinarily brave. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:21
Seeing there are some people outside the door, | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
he's afraid they'll be in danger and he presses a hidden button | 0:06:23 | 0:06:27
that locks the door. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:28
She was threatening them through the door. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:30
If I had let her go, she might... She could have gone and done anything. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:34
A courageous action to protect other people, | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
but it means he's trapped inside with a violent attacker | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
and now she really wants to get at Michael. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
She tries to climb the counter | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
and this gives him a slim chance to disarm her. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
She put the knife in her hand on the counter to climb. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:51
I proceeded to grab her wrist with my left arm. | 0:06:51 | 0:06:54
As they frantically tussle, the woman grabs at Michael's neck | 0:06:54 | 0:06:58
then she violently yanks the blade free... | 0:06:58 | 0:07:00
..leaving a large cut on his hand. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
But what happens next is truly astonishing. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
After even more stabbing, suddenly she stops. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
When she realised she'd cut me, | 0:07:13 | 0:07:15
she had a change of heart. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
The woman even lays down her knife and goes off to get a can of drink. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:21
Michael moves the knife away. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:23
There's quite a bit of blood on the floor and that, in itself, | 0:07:23 | 0:07:26
I think was enough to convince her that, you know, it might be bad. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
The woman fetches some kitchen roll to help Michael nurse the wound. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
One minute she's standing there trying to kill me, | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
and the next minute she is trying to help me rather than hurt me. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
But, sadly, this show of concern is short-lived. | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
The woman gets fired up again | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
when she sees more people outside the door. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:46
She's realised there's no escape. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:51
But now, she picks up a glass bottle to use as a weapon. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:54
She was walking up and down the shop | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
threatening the people outside with a broken bottle. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
Later, the police race to the shop after Michael's alert. | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
I see that she had a weapon | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
and from her demeanour she'd be ready to use it on us. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:08
They have riot equipment and pepper spray. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
The police somehow have to get in to disarm this violent woman | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
without Michael or anyone else, including themselves, getting hurt. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
Now, this isn't a ghost, it's a chap in Swansea who hasn't | 0:08:24 | 0:08:28
a ghost of a chance of getting away with, er, a crime of fashion. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
This petty thief with a pile of wedding gowns has just kicked | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
in the back door of a bridal shop and snatched a number of dresses. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
Maybe he has seven brothers who are marrying seven brides. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:51
Whatever the reason, | 0:08:51 | 0:08:52
I'm sure he'd like to draw a veil over this particular CCTV camera. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:57
These pictures helped police to track the man down | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
and they raid his home the next day. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
They find the dresses stuffed unceremoniously | 0:09:03 | 0:09:07
into an under-stairs cupboard. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:09
They charge him with illegally attempting to have and to hold them. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:13
He is sentenced to nine and a half months in prison for this | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
and one other offence. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:18
Hopefully, from now on, he'll learn to love, honour and obey the law. | 0:09:18 | 0:09:23
Next, from weddings to funerals | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
and the last place you'd expect to find crime would be a crematorium, | 0:09:29 | 0:09:34
which makes the actions of these heartless thieves | 0:09:34 | 0:09:36
even more shocking. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:37
Liverpool. | 0:09:43 | 0:09:45
Stealing from funerals has started to become a problem. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:49
You'd like to think security was something you could have | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
quite low down on the agenda for cemeteries. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:54
And security is the last thing Chris thought he'd need | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
at his mum's funeral. | 0:09:57 | 0:09:59
We went to put her in the hearse and then I noticed | 0:09:59 | 0:10:02
two people that were there had no connection with the family. | 0:10:02 | 0:10:07
And the mystery guests are not there to pay their respects. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
Springwood Crematorium is part of Allerton Cemetery in Liverpool, | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
one of the largest cemeteries in the UK. | 0:10:22 | 0:10:25
Chris Jennat regularly visits his family's memorial. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
It's where his grandfather was buried, but also where | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
he comes to remember his sister, his dad and, most recently, his mum. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:39
You only have one mum, don't you? So, she was great. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
She'd have done anything for you, you know? | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
Mum Bridget was adored by her five children and many grandchildren. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:51
When she succumbed to pneumonia at the age of 83, | 0:10:51 | 0:10:54
the family were grief stricken. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
It was a shock for everyone because she was a character. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
Some of the one-liners she used to come out with, you know? | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
We were a very, very close family. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:05
The family arranged the funeral. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:07
Some very special blue and white flower arrangements | 0:11:07 | 0:11:09
are ordered in her memory. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:11
It's the last thing you've bought for your mum. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:14
So, whatever the expense was, it doesn't matter, does it, really? | 0:11:15 | 0:11:19
It's agreed that Bridget should be cremated | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
at Springwood Crematorium that's run by Liverpool City Council. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
It's the busiest of our two crematoria in Liverpool. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:29
It's an area of peace and tranquillity | 0:11:29 | 0:11:32
and remembrance for many families. | 0:11:32 | 0:11:35
Dale Willis has helped run all the city's cemeteries for 14 years | 0:11:35 | 0:11:39
and that includes their protection. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:42
We do have a security presence in all the cemeteries. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:44
We have all the cemeteries locked at night and opened the next morning. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:49
But we do have pockets of antisocial behaviour. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
And Dale begins to notice a very upsetting trend. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
We had a couple of reports of flowers going missing | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
and I am shocked that people would do something | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
that would impact on a family in that way. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:03
After talking it over with local funeral directors, | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
Dale decides to take action. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
There's only one way to resolve that... | 0:12:09 | 0:12:11
To install CCTV equipment. | 0:12:11 | 0:12:13
Two cameras are installed and signs are put up to make the public aware. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:20
A few weeks later, it's the day of Bridget's funeral. | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
A couple of onlookers catch Chris's eye | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
as the coffin starts the journey to the crematorium. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
We went to put her in the hearse and then I noticed, er, two people | 0:12:32 | 0:12:36
that were there had no connection with the family. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:40
I thought nothing about it. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42
Then the funeral got under way - a great service - | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
then we came to Springwood Crematorium. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
The flowers were put in a place just outside the crem'. | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
Following the ceremony, the family return home. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
They plan to move the flowers to the memorial the next day. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
I got the phone call saying that the flowers had been pinched. | 0:12:55 | 0:13:00
Chris is appalled by the news. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
It's absolutely disgusting, isn't it? | 0:13:03 | 0:13:06
To think someone could do such a low thing, like. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
It actually gives another dimension of stress | 0:13:09 | 0:13:12
and anxiety for the family at what is already a very difficult time. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:17
Staff at the crematorium check the CCTV recording | 0:13:17 | 0:13:21
and this is what they see. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:23
It's early evening on the same day as the funeral. A car pulls up. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:30
Two women get out. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
One opens the boot while the other makes a beeline | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
for the family's large blue and white flowers. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:38
It seems as if they knew the tributes to target. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
The crematorium hands the footage over to Merseyside Police | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
who identify the women from their car registration. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
They are arrested. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:53
Chris gets to see the footage and thinks he's seen the women before. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:57
I realised they were on the corner of the street as we were | 0:13:57 | 0:14:00
bringing my mum out. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:02
During the women's arrests, | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
the police discover flower arranging paraphernalia in one of their homes. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:08
It seems they were using Bridget's flowers to sell on as new tributes. | 0:14:08 | 0:14:14
Words can't describe what they've done. | 0:14:14 | 0:14:16
But there's a full description of what they've done in court. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
The woman who picked up the flowers has previous convictions | 0:14:21 | 0:14:25
and is sentenced to ten weeks in prison. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
Her accomplice is given eight weeks, suspended for 12 months. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:34
Both have to pay compensation. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
It was pleasing, certainly for the family, that justice had been done. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:43
We are in a position now where we're not having any thefts | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
and I that can only be seen as a positive thing. | 0:14:46 | 0:14:50
My mam will be made up that they've been caught. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:54
Hopefully now she's looking down and saying, "Well done!" | 0:14:54 | 0:14:57
Coming up, a disappearing act at Tricky's bar when cash vanishes. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:08
We were all really gobsmacked. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
It's sleight of hand by a trusted barmaid. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:14
We just couldn't believe it. Everybody was shocked. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:16
Back to Ashford in Kent where, in the early hours of the morning, | 0:15:25 | 0:15:29
a violent attempted robbery has been taking place in a shop. | 0:15:29 | 0:15:33
This young woman is wielding a large carving knife | 0:15:33 | 0:15:36
with which she's been attacking Michael, the 60-year-old cashier. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:40
Now, she's using a wine bottle as a weapon. | 0:15:40 | 0:15:43
Michael has bravely locked her inside the shop alone with him | 0:15:43 | 0:15:46
to protect the people outside and he's trying to calm her down. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:50
I was saying, "I've locked the doors. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:52
"They can't get in and I'm not opening the doors to let you out | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
"because you might have a go at them". | 0:15:55 | 0:15:57
My idea was that I was protecting them as well as herself by keeping | 0:15:57 | 0:16:01
the situation contained in the shop. | 0:16:01 | 0:16:03
But the woman is having none of it and continues her threats. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:07
Outside, the police have now arrived much to Michael's relief. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:11
When the police turned up, | 0:16:11 | 0:16:12
I was relieved to see that the end was in sight. | 0:16:12 | 0:16:15
But the woman is not about to give up. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:17
Now she also threatens PCs Ryan Duffy and Jason Gisby | 0:16:17 | 0:16:21
who are outside the door. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:23
The first thing I see is this woman with a wine bottle in her hands. | 0:16:23 | 0:16:28
She appeared very agitated, very angry... | 0:16:28 | 0:16:30
She smashes it against the front door. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:33
..and from her demeanour, she would be ready to use it on us. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:36
-But it's Michael they fear for most. -We know Michael. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:39
We've chatted to him many times in the past. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:41
He appeared very distressed, very shaken up. | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
There was a risk that she would return to him. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:46
It was right to get in there as quickly as possible. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
Throughout his ordeal, Michael has kept a cool head | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
and now he signals another way in to Ryan and Jason. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:56
If they went around to the other door at the back, they can get in | 0:16:56 | 0:16:59
because I can open that door without her being able to get out. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:03
The police get the message and equip themselves to arrest | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
the violent woman without injury to Michael or the woman or themselves. | 0:17:06 | 0:17:11
Ryan gets a riot shield while Jason arms himself with pepper spray. | 0:17:11 | 0:17:15
While other officers distract the woman at the front of the store, | 0:17:17 | 0:17:20
Michael opens the back door by pressing a button. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
Ryan and Jason enter. Once inside, they split up. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:27
Jason calls out to the woman to draw her over, but she's in no mood | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
to come quietly and walks towards him with the broken bottle. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:34
Ryan steps out from an aisle behind her as she approaches Jason. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:38
She was jabbing the broken bottle towards my face. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:40
I instantly pulled my pepper spray and sprayed it towards her face. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:44
Ryan has come behind her almost at the same time | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
and has struck her with a shield. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:49
They got her down but she still struggles. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:52
Just wildly throwing her hand around with this broken bottle. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:56
She finally gives in and they handcuff her. | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
It's a good, safe arrest. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
That was it, basically. All over and done with. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:03
They took over and I could relax. HE LAUGHS | 0:18:03 | 0:18:07
While and officer takes a look at Michael's cut hand, | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
the police help the woman recover from the pepper spray. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:14
She was polite, she spoke to us. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:16
When a person has been exposed to pepper spray | 0:18:16 | 0:18:18
we have a duty of care to them and after-care, | 0:18:18 | 0:18:21
so we usually sit them still, | 0:18:21 | 0:18:23
advise them not to rub their eyes and give them other advice. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
The woman is taken to the police station | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
and Michael goes home. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:29
He turns up for work again the very next day, | 0:18:31 | 0:18:34
but he soon realises that the robbery | 0:18:34 | 0:18:36
has affected him more than he thinks. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
I couldn't stop crying, so... | 0:18:38 | 0:18:41
erm...they sent me home. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:43
I think it was just shock, basically, over the next two days. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:47
I went and saw a therapist for a few weeks to sort of, like, | 0:18:47 | 0:18:51
get it out of my system. | 0:18:51 | 0:18:53
Now, I don't think nothing of it. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:55
You know, it happened. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:57
It's gone and done and, er, life goes on. | 0:18:57 | 0:18:59
It's a reminder of exactly how much these crimes | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
affect the innocent people involved. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
In court, she pleads guilty and is sentenced to six years in prison. | 0:19:08 | 0:19:12
Michael is given a special commendation for his courage | 0:19:17 | 0:19:20
and determination to stop the violent woman | 0:19:20 | 0:19:23
and contain her safely until the police could arrive. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
He was receives a Certificate of Bravery | 0:19:26 | 0:19:29
from the High Sheriff of Kent's office and a special cash award. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:33
I suppose, to get any reward is a nice feeling. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:37
To get one you can actually display on the wall | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
and say to your children, your grandchildren, | 0:19:40 | 0:19:42
"That's your grandad", you know, that's got to be nice. | 0:19:42 | 0:19:46
That is nice. | 0:19:46 | 0:19:48
Mercifully, it's very unlikely any of us | 0:19:53 | 0:19:56
will ever face an attack like that. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:58
Michael bravely took on his attacker, | 0:19:58 | 0:20:01
but is that wise to do so if someone is wielding a weapon? | 0:20:01 | 0:20:04
My advice would be to try and back away. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:07
Don't try and intervene. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:09
Try and call 999 if at all possible, | 0:20:09 | 0:20:10
if it's not going to aggravate the person with the knife. | 0:20:10 | 0:20:13
You might not be able to talk to us, but we can still listen. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:16
We can still hear what's going on. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:18
We can figure out who the phone belongs to | 0:20:18 | 0:20:20
and we can start to do the work to locate you and get help. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:23
You need to keep your distance from somebody. | 0:20:23 | 0:20:25
We call it the "fighting arc", so we put our arms out and if somebody | 0:20:25 | 0:20:29
is at an arm's length from you, then that gives you a fighting chance. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:33
Think calmly and then look for your best escape route | 0:20:33 | 0:20:37
if it's safe to do so. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:38
If it's not safe and you need to engage in some kind of conversation | 0:20:38 | 0:20:42
with that person to keep them calm and de-escalate | 0:20:42 | 0:20:46
any kind of threat until the police arrive, then do that. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
We'd all like to think we could trust the people we work with. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:57
After all, we spend a lot of time with them. | 0:20:57 | 0:20:59
So what if some money went missing | 0:20:59 | 0:21:01
and it could only be someone who is close to us? | 0:21:01 | 0:21:04
Accrington, Lancashire. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:12
A tricky issue at a bar called Tricky's. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
Totally, totally shocked. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:17
In all the times I've had pubs in, say, over 30 years, | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
it's the first time anything like that's happened. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:23
Money has been disappearing from this popular local pub, | 0:21:23 | 0:21:26
but who is taking it? | 0:21:26 | 0:21:27
I bet all eyes were actually on me! | 0:21:27 | 0:21:30
The owner has a trick up his sleeve, a hidden camera. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
It looks like a smoke alarm. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:35
The camera is built inside so you can't see it. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:37
The camera is there in case of trouble at the bar, | 0:21:37 | 0:21:40
not for secretly spying on the people he knows and trusts. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:43
Difficult, very difficult. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:45
Accrington. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:51
Famed for its football team | 0:21:51 | 0:21:53
and making the hardest building bricks in the world, | 0:21:53 | 0:21:56
it's also home to Tricky's. | 0:21:56 | 0:21:58
-It's named after its owner. -Well, sort of. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:02
It's Richard, so the nickname for Richard is Dick. | 0:22:02 | 0:22:05
Dickie, Dickie Mint, Tricky, Tricky Mint, | 0:22:05 | 0:22:08
Tricky Dicky and it fell to Tricky Dicky. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
It stayed like that so we just shortened it to Tricky, | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
and some call me things I can't say on camera! | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
After running pubs on and off for 30 years, now, at the age of 70, | 0:22:17 | 0:22:22
running Tricky's is Richard's dream come true. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
From the first time I ever came in, I've always wanted this pub | 0:22:25 | 0:22:28
and I finally did get it. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:29
The bar is a firm local favourite and a fun place to be. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:34
Tricky's is the place where you've got all your regulars. | 0:22:34 | 0:22:38
Sunday afternoons is brilliant. In fact, every day is. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
I love working here. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
Love working here. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
Richard's staff are all local, including three young sisters. | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
Some others, like Sharon, have known him for years. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:51
It's one big, happy family. | 0:22:51 | 0:22:54
He's not a pushover, but he's not... | 0:22:54 | 0:22:57
He's not strict and, you know, he lets... | 0:22:57 | 0:22:59
As long as we're doing our job. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:01
Even this easy-going and trusting boss | 0:23:01 | 0:23:03
had to have security cameras installed when he took the place on. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:07
It's actually part of your licence now to have CCTV | 0:23:07 | 0:23:11
and someone that can use it if there are any incidents. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:15
So far, Richard has never needed to check footage from any | 0:23:15 | 0:23:19
of the cameras, including the one in the smoke alarm overlooking the bar. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:23
I even forgot it was there myself. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:25
But one Friday night, that all changes. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
Richard comes to work to find there's no £20 notes in the till. | 0:23:29 | 0:23:34
At first, he's not too worried. | 0:23:34 | 0:23:36
It's been a quiet night... So what? | 0:23:36 | 0:23:39
Other nights are good. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:40
But the next Friday isn't any better so Richard checks the coin drawer | 0:23:40 | 0:23:44
to see if any of the 20s have been wrongly put in there. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
But, no. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:48
And he's shocked to discover there are coins missing, too. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:52
There was £80 missing in pound coins. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:55
He asks Sharon the next day about the missing money, | 0:23:55 | 0:23:58
as she works the early evening shift on Fridays. | 0:23:58 | 0:24:01
She said, "Check under the till. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:03
"All the money's there." I'm saying, "What money? There's no money there." | 0:24:03 | 0:24:07
She said, "Are you joking? | 0:24:07 | 0:24:08
"I had a really good night last night up to six. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
"There's loads of money there". | 0:24:11 | 0:24:13
But there isn't. Richard can only think the worst. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:16
There's a thief about and it has to be one of the people | 0:24:16 | 0:24:19
he trusts like family. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
Totally, totally shocked. | 0:24:21 | 0:24:23
The most likely suspects are the Friday staff. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:26
That's Sharon and a popular 21-year-old girl | 0:24:26 | 0:24:29
who's one of the three sisters that worked there. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:31
We've known the family for many, many years. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:34
My stepdaughter is a big friend of her mother's. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:38
I bet all eyes were actually on me! | 0:24:38 | 0:24:41
You know? It's horrible. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:43
Richard knows he must check his CCTV footage, | 0:24:45 | 0:24:48
but first, he calls the staff together | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
to give the culprit a chance to own up. | 0:24:51 | 0:24:53
Sharon gets the wrong end of the stick. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:55
My hand went straight up! | 0:24:55 | 0:24:57
I've got a bit of a thing for Pepperami. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:01
So I told him, basically, | 0:25:02 | 0:25:04
"You might see me with a few of them stuffed in my mouth!" | 0:25:04 | 0:25:07
No-one owns up so Richard goes off to look at the footage | 0:25:08 | 0:25:11
in a room on his own and this is what he sees. | 0:25:11 | 0:25:15
The 21-year-old sister has just taken over the shift from Sharon. | 0:25:16 | 0:25:20
She appears too busy herself with the usual barmaid duties, | 0:25:20 | 0:25:24
but appearances can be deceiving, | 0:25:24 | 0:25:27
because, on a closer look, she also shows some skilful sleight of hand. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:32
While customers are lost in conversation, | 0:25:32 | 0:25:35
the young barmaid takes four bags of £2 coins | 0:25:35 | 0:25:38
out of the change drawer and puts them in her handbag. | 0:25:38 | 0:25:42
That's the £80 that was missing when I checked later on in the night. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:47
But that's just for starters. | 0:25:47 | 0:25:49
Half an hour later, the barmaid decides she deserves another tip. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:53
She lifts the drawer in the till containing the 20s, | 0:25:55 | 0:25:58
grabs a handful and leaves them right next to her handbag. | 0:25:58 | 0:26:02
Ten minutes later, she comes back | 0:26:03 | 0:26:05
and shoves the notes inside the bag. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
She's making room in her bag for more money. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:10
She's pushing the coins to one side | 0:26:10 | 0:26:12
plus the notes she's already taken. | 0:26:12 | 0:26:14
After another 45 minutes, | 0:26:14 | 0:26:16
the barmaid decides to get another round in. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
A few more 20s on the house. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:21
Rewinding back to her previous Friday shift, | 0:26:23 | 0:26:26
he sees the same routine. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:28
Pull some pints, pull some more money. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:31
Richard decides it's time to call last orders. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:34
He tells the rest of the staff who has been stealing. | 0:26:34 | 0:26:37
We were all really gobsmacked. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:38
They just couldn't believe it. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:40
Everybody was shocked. The sisters were just in tears. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:43
He's looked at her as a daughter, you know. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:45
He even said to us, I look at her like family. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:49
Richard confronts the young barmaid. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:52
I asked her why. She was just crying, crying, crying, | 0:26:52 | 0:26:56
as I suppose you would do when you've been found out, | 0:26:56 | 0:26:59
saying she was so sorry. | 0:26:59 | 0:27:00
When I said, "How much have you taken?" she said, "I don't know". | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
She's just spent it. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:07
And then she went. | 0:27:07 | 0:27:08
Leaving Richard with a dilemma. | 0:27:10 | 0:27:12
I thought, "Well, if it's just a few hundred pounds, | 0:27:13 | 0:27:16
"I'm going to ruin this kid's life, | 0:27:16 | 0:27:19
"so, I'm not going to go to the police." | 0:27:19 | 0:27:21
But, at that point, we didn't know what she'd taken. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:24
Richard becomes less forgiving | 0:27:24 | 0:27:25
when he sees the barmaid's attitude on a social media site. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:29
He decides it might be better if she learns a lesson. | 0:27:29 | 0:27:33
She was showing off her new dresses and designer gear | 0:27:33 | 0:27:36
and bags and shoes. | 0:27:36 | 0:27:38
I just thought, she is just taking the Mick here. | 0:27:38 | 0:27:41
He takes action. | 0:27:41 | 0:27:42
So, I went down to the police station, | 0:27:42 | 0:27:44
made a formal complaint. | 0:27:44 | 0:27:46
The barmaid pleads guilty. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:50
She is sentenced to 12 months community supervision | 0:27:51 | 0:27:54
and ordered to pay £500 in compensation. | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
Things are now a lot less tricky at Tricky's. | 0:28:01 | 0:28:04
The two other sisters work here. They'll continue to work here. | 0:28:04 | 0:28:07
There's nothing wrong with the girls. | 0:28:07 | 0:28:08
Of the staff I've got at the moment, I think they'll be OK. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:12
Although, just to be on the safe side, | 0:28:12 | 0:28:14
Richard has since upgraded his CCTV system. | 0:28:14 | 0:28:17
I dread to think what he's seen on them. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:19
I dread to think what he's seen on them cameras with us lot! | 0:28:19 | 0:28:22
We didn't know half of 'em were here! | 0:28:22 | 0:28:25
Barmaids beware! | 0:28:25 | 0:28:27
That's it for today. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:31
Join us next time when police and the public | 0:28:31 | 0:28:34
