Thieves will steal our cash, our cars, our valuables. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
Just about anything they can get their hands on. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
But now the police are using cutting-edge technology | 0:00:10 | 0:00:13
to catch bad guys. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:14
CCTV is gold dust. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
Great evidence for the police. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:18
Got to have him stopped. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
Local councils, shops and businesses | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
are fighting crime with their own tricks and traps. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
There's a eureka moment when you get that evidence. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
And the public are using secret cameras to make sure crooks | 0:00:28 | 0:00:32
get their comeuppance. | 0:00:32 | 0:00:34
It makes me feel so angry. | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
He's paid the price, he's being dealt with. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
Yes, we've got her! | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
So anyone who's up to no good had better think twice. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
They might just get Caught Red Handed. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
Today - while Sam is out at work in her car, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:56
her 14-year-old daughter is home alone. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
But, to her horror, she isn't alone for long. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:04
She'd seen the man standing there, inches away from her face. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
That far away from each other. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
Sam gets a text from her terrified daughter | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
that there are men in the house, and races back. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
I'm wondering if they've hurt her, done something, | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
everything goes through your head, doesn't it? | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
Also today - 76-year-old Norman's family depended on two people | 0:01:20 | 0:01:25
they trusted to look after him. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
But instead they stole his savings. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
It's like a stab in the back. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
You know, you feel like you've been groomed. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:35
And a quiet Northumberland village | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
is suddenly the scene of a major crime - | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
an armed gang strikes in the middle of the night, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
and the locals get a rude awakening. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
I heard the police helicopter, it was really, really low | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
and then light lit up the whole bedroom. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
Definitely didn't have any idea | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
that it was going to be something like this. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:58
Impington is a quiet country village on the outskirts of Cambridge. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:13
Local resident Sam, who works as a delivery driver, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
has lived in the village longer than most. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
She's very much at home here. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
It's quite nice to live in Impington, actually. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
It's a quiet area. We've lived in this house since I was... | 0:02:25 | 0:02:30
eight or nine. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:31
Sam took over the house from her parents | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
and now lives here with daughter Paige, who's 14 years old. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:37
Paige has a hearing disability. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
She's had hearing problems from birth and she's had an operation | 0:02:39 | 0:02:44
and it didn't work, so in the end they gave her hearing aids. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
Come this way, look. What's this? | 0:02:48 | 0:02:49
They share the house with three Chihuahuas. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
They're not the best guard dogs | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
so, as the house is surrounded by fields, | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
Sam decided to invest in some home security. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
The reason that I got CCTV is because I'm on the end | 0:03:01 | 0:03:05
and, you know, you just don't know. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
So it's better to be safe than sorry, really. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
And, one Thursday in late spring, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
it turns out getting the cameras was a wise move. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
First thing in the morning, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:20
when Sam's about is set off on her delivery round, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
Paige tells her she's feeling too poorly to go to school. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
She wasn't feeling very well so I said to her, | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29
"Well, you can stay at home and I'll call in on my way past | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
"to make sure you're OK." | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
Sam has to go to work to make an urgent delivery | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
before she'll be able to get back to the house. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
I said, "I'll come and see you soon." And she said, | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
"Fine, I'm going to go to sleep." So she took her hearing aids out. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:46
Paige doesn't want to talk on camera, | 0:03:46 | 0:03:48
but she's told us the shocking sequence of events | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
that happens next. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53
After her mum leaves, Paige goes back to bed and falls asleep. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:57
But her sleep is about to be disturbed in a terrifying manner. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:04
The CCTV shows how, unknown to Paige, | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
two men run into the driveway, | 0:04:07 | 0:04:10
one of them carrying a crowbar. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:12
The first thing Paige knows about the men | 0:04:15 | 0:04:17
is when, in a moment of pure horror, | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
she wakes up to see a shadow moving in her doorway. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:22
She's seen the man standing there, inches away from her face. | 0:04:24 | 0:04:28
That far away from each other. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:30
Paige is scared stiff, she literally can't move. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
I guess she didn't know what he was going to do, | 0:04:33 | 0:04:36
whether he was going to harm her, you know, | 0:04:36 | 0:04:38
he could've done anything to her. | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
The man is startled to find someone home. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
He's as shocked as she is and he runs. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
But, without her hearing aids, Paige doesn't know where they have gone. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
She thinks they're still downstairs. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
She manages to text her mum. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
"Mum, there's people in the house, you need to come home." | 0:04:57 | 0:04:59
So with that, I'm getting here as fast as I can, | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
constantly ringing her and then she's not answering. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
And then obviously that's making me panic more. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
I'm wondering if, you know, they've hurt her, done something, | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
just everything goes through your head, doesn't it? | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
On the way home, Sam calls her partner, Jamie, | 0:05:15 | 0:05:18
who gets to the house first. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
He checks to see if Paige is OK and makes sure the intruders have gone. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:24
Moments later, Sam arrives and rushes to her daughter's side. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:31
I find her in floods of tears | 0:05:31 | 0:05:33
and Jamie was there, making sure she was OK. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:37
Sam looks around to see if anything's been taken. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:41
I came through from the living room to the kitchen, | 0:05:41 | 0:05:43
and noticed that they'd prised the kitchen window open. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
And I've got a glass jar of rice | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
which has obviously gone everywhere and glass everywhere. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
Then I went upstairs and went into my room where I see my drawers | 0:05:52 | 0:05:57
and my wardrobe that have been messed about with. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:00
Surprisingly, Sam finds nothing's been stolen but she's badly shaken. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:06
It's just degrading, isn't it, knowing that someone | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
has been in your house and gone through your private stuff. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
It's horrible. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
Sam phones the police | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
and PC Chris Daniel responds immediately. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
We got in the car and we went straight there as quick as we can. | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
I was part of an impact team and we focus quite heavily on burglaries. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
When Chris arrives, he finds Paige is inconsolable. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:30
She was clearly upset and shocked by what had happened, | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
and it was obviously very distressing for her, | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
particularly in that she hadn't seen exactly who it was in the house. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
She just knew it wasn't her parents. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
Sam tells Chris about the security cameras. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
When we find out there's CCTV, obviously for us, that is fantastic. | 0:06:43 | 0:06:47
It can give us some real good leads at an early stage. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
Chris views the CCTV recording and notices something suspicious | 0:06:51 | 0:06:55
half an hour before the break-in. | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
First time I see it, I'm just like...gobsmacked. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:01
A silver car slows down near the house. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
Then a woman enters the driveway. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
I think she's there solely to see if anybody's home, | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
to see what the set-up of the house is. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
My daughter, being deaf, wouldn't have heard the knock on the door | 0:07:18 | 0:07:21
so, yeah, she obviously thought it was all clear. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:24
The woman goes round the back of the house...then she leaves. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:28
30 minutes later, the silver car returns and the two men jump out. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
She dropped them off, | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
now they're coming in and they're going round the back of the house. | 0:07:40 | 0:07:43
They first head for a caravan in Sam's back garden. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
I don't know why they've gone into the caravan, | 0:07:46 | 0:07:48
there's nothing in there. | 0:07:48 | 0:07:50
The burglars spend several minutes looking for valuables, | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
but there's nothing there. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
Then they turn their attention | 0:07:54 | 0:07:55
to the rest of what they believe is an empty house. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
The man in the bottom of the screen there appears to be acting | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
as some sort of lookout whilst the other male is entering | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
via the kitchen window. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:06
A few minutes later, the cameras pick them up running away. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:14
Chris and a colleague decide to focus on the silver car - | 0:08:16 | 0:08:20
it could be the key to tracking down the culprits. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:23
We worked out after a bit of googling that potentially | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
it was a Vauxhall Signum. It was at this point that we remembered | 0:08:26 | 0:08:29
that there was a call earlier on in the day. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:32
That morning, one of Sam's neighbours spotted a man | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34
drinking alcohol at the wheel of a car. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:37
It was a silver Vauxhall Signum. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
The witness noted the car's numberplate and phoned the police. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:44
It could be Chris's lucky day. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:47
There was nothing to be lost by us checking this out, | 0:08:47 | 0:08:49
Vauxhall Signums are not a rare car but you don't see them everywhere. | 0:08:49 | 0:08:53
Chris sets off for the address where the vehicle's registered | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
and has another extraordinary piece of luck. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
When he's close to the house, the silver car drives straight past him. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
He flags the driver down. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:05
Once it was stopped, a female driver got out. | 0:09:05 | 0:09:07
We've seen immediately that she's wearing the clothes | 0:09:07 | 0:09:10
exactly matching that of the female seen in the CCTV footage. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:13
Chris arrests the woman. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
He then drives to her house where, as soon as he walks in, | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
he finds a man who bears an uncanny resemblance to one of the burglars. | 0:09:20 | 0:09:24
Chris promptly arrests him, too. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:28
He has found two of the three suspects within hours of the crime. | 0:09:28 | 0:09:32
I think luck was definitely on our side. We've searched the premises | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
and we found a jacket matching that seen on the CCTV. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:40
He seizes the man's shoes | 0:09:40 | 0:09:41
and they match footprints found at Sam's house. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:44
This obviously puts him inside the house and it's very difficult | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
for him to argue why his shoe print was in the kitchen. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
The other man was spotted by officers in Cambridge | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
three days later. The police solved the entire case in 72 hours. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:57
They were bang on it, they were helpful and got them, basically. | 0:09:57 | 0:10:01
So, yeah, they were... They were great. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:03
In Crown Court, the woman and her partner admitted to the burglary. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:09
She was sentenced to 16 months imprisonment, | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
suspended for 18 months. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:14
Her partner was sent to prison for a year and eight months. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:19
Their accomplice pleaded not guilty but the jury disagreed, | 0:10:19 | 0:10:23
and he was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:27
Break-ins like this are rare, | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
and Sam's security cameras certainly paid dividends. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
But, for her, the most important thing about that day | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
was that she came home to find Paige safe. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
To see that she was obviously not OK but not harmed but, yeah, | 0:10:42 | 0:10:47
it was such a relief to see that she was all right. | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
Fortunately, criminals are often not the brightest of the bunch... | 0:10:57 | 0:11:01
and get caught because they make a slip up, sometimes quite literally. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:06
Ouch! | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08 | |
Here's three who take the phrase "impact of crime" | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
to a whole new level. | 0:11:10 | 0:11:12
This man's trying to steal a bike... | 0:11:16 | 0:11:19
unsuccessfully. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:21
He doesn't spot the barrier. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:23
Durr! | 0:11:24 | 0:11:26 | |
The bike was unlocked because it's broken and worthless, | 0:11:26 | 0:11:30
so a lot of pain but no gain. | 0:11:30 | 0:11:33
Next, an attempted shoplifter tries to flee... | 0:11:33 | 0:11:36
Whoops! | 0:11:38 | 0:11:39
The revolving door revolves the other way. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:44
Schoolgirl error. | 0:11:44 | 0:11:45
Just when she does seem to work out the revolving door, | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
she abandons that particular exit strategy | 0:11:48 | 0:11:51
and goes for an open-door policy instead. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:55
And this man brings the house down. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
Or, more accurately, the Jobcentre. | 0:11:57 | 0:11:59
He's upset his unemployment benefit hasn't gone into his account | 0:12:01 | 0:12:05
and decides the best way to complain is to crash through the front doors. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:10
Later, the judge gives him a 15-month jail sentence | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
and 12-month driving ban. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:16
Now, that won't look good on his CV! | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
There are now over ten million pensioners in the UK | 0:12:23 | 0:12:26
and that number is growing, | 0:12:26 | 0:12:27
which means the number of carers is growing, too. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:30
Now, the vast majority of those carers are very honest | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
and hard-working people but, sadly, a small minority are not. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:37
Norman is a pensioner | 0:12:39 | 0:12:41
who fell victim to thieves calling themselves carers... | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
She shoved it in her bra. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
..rescued by a camera disguised as a clock. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
That were brilliant, really. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:51
It were a good bit of thinking from my uncle, to be fair. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:54
But the family is left in shock. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
It knocked me up a bit, you know - it's like a stab in the back. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:01
It made me so angry, it really did. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:03
Rochdale in Greater Manchester used to be a busy mill town. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:14
Most of the mills are now long gone | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16
but a lot of the workers' pubs are still around. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:20
76-year-old Norman is Rochdale born and bred. | 0:13:20 | 0:13:24
He's been a pub landlord for nearly 50 years. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:28
I think the '70s were the best time for local pubs. | 0:13:28 | 0:13:31
At that time, your pub was like your local community centre, you know? | 0:13:31 | 0:13:36
You would call in and have a couple of pints on the way home from work | 0:13:36 | 0:13:40
and then come back in the evening, you know? | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
Norman lives in a flat above his pub, the Tanners Arms, | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
which he renovated in 1991. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:50
Norman's granddaughter, Jodie, | 0:13:50 | 0:13:52
has been a regular at his pub since she was four years old. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:56
I am really, really close with my grandad. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:58
He is my rock. He has been there for me through so much. | 0:13:58 | 0:14:02
He really has. | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
He's amazing. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:06
Sadly, 13 years ago, | 0:14:06 | 0:14:08
Norman had a major health scare | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
which has left him with limited mobility. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:13
He struggles and, in the last three years, he's gradually got worse. | 0:14:13 | 0:14:19
He doesn't really come down to the pub that much any more. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:23
Norman's family became increasingly worried about him | 0:14:23 | 0:14:27
looking after himself, | 0:14:27 | 0:14:28
so they paid for some people to help with cleaning. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
But they soon became carers, too. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
My granddaughter arranged for a girl to come in two or three days a week | 0:14:33 | 0:14:39
and do some cleaning for me. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:41
It were fantastic, it were helping us out, | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
because we were all working full-time. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:45
We were pretty friendly and... | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
She was very obliging. In fact, her daughter, | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
who'd done some care work, joined her. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:53
It was nice that we could trust somebody else to help out | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
and Norman was happy with it, he got on really, really well with them. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:59
On several occasions | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
I went out with them, went to a restaurant | 0:15:02 | 0:15:05
for a meal all evening. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
Everyone... Everyone were happy. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:09
But that happiness is not to last. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:12
Because money soon starts to go missing from Norman's flat. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
It's a week before Christmas and Norman notices | 0:15:19 | 0:15:22
that cash has suddenly disappeared from his wallet. | 0:15:22 | 0:15:26
It was money that I had saved for treats, birthdays, trips out. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:30
He spoke to my uncle and he spoke to my mum, "Have I lent you any money?" | 0:15:30 | 0:15:35
No. We thought he might have misplaced it, | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
he might of miscounted, things like that. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:40
So my uncle came down, went through everything and made sure, | 0:15:40 | 0:15:44
"Right, yeah, there is some money missing." | 0:15:44 | 0:15:46
Norman's family want to find out who's stealing from him. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:50
Only his carers and relatives have access to the flat. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:54
My uncle then went and got a little camera in a clock. | 0:15:54 | 0:15:59
Jodie's uncle, Norman's son, Steve, has decided to turn detective. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:04
He sets up the hidden camera in the kitchen, | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
an hour before the carers are due to arrive. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
The camera doesn't look like a dummy, it just looked like a clock. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:14
We finished up putting it on the mantelpiece. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:17
The family leave Norman in the flat. He knows he has to behave | 0:16:17 | 0:16:21
as if nothing out of the ordinary is happening. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
The mother and daughter carer team arrives. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
INDISTINCT CHAT | 0:16:32 | 0:16:34
Norman chats with them as usual. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:36
They don't notice the new clock sitting on the shelf. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40
INDISTINCT CHAT | 0:16:41 | 0:16:44
Soon, it's time for Norman to take a shower. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:47
The daughter helps him through to the bathroom. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
A few minutes later, | 0:16:52 | 0:16:54
she's back and she hands something over to her mother. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:57
It's a handful of cash. | 0:16:58 | 0:17:01
With Norman out of the way, | 0:17:01 | 0:17:02
she raided his wallet in the sitting room. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:06
The mother stuffs the wad into her bra, | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
clearly happy with her ill-gotten gains. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:11
Coincidentally, she looked straight at the clock, | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
oblivious to the fact the camera is seeing everything. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:18
The carers leave. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:20
And the family arrive later to check Norman's wallet. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:26
They find that ?80 is missing | 0:17:26 | 0:17:29
and take a look to see what the camera's captured. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:32
Jodie hadn't prepared herself for how she'd feel | 0:17:33 | 0:17:35
seeing the carers steal from her grandfather. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:39
The first time I actually watched this video, I was in tears. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:42
I was crying. It was awful. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
It made me so angry, it really did. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:49
Seeing people he trusted stealing from him affects Norman deeply. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:54
It's like a stab in the back. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:57
You know, you feel like you've been groomed because when somebody | 0:17:57 | 0:18:01
friendly like that comes along, you really appreciate that... | 0:18:01 | 0:18:05
That warmth and that friendship. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:08
And then... | 0:18:09 | 0:18:10
..it all gets smashed asunder, doesn't it? | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
Talk about being judges of character, | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
I mean, I've had enough practice but I'm still not that good, am I? | 0:18:17 | 0:18:21
Steve wants to get more incriminating evidence | 0:18:23 | 0:18:26
before going to the police. He writes down the serial numbers | 0:18:26 | 0:18:30
of the cash in Norman's wallet so he can identify the notes | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
if they are stolen during the carers' next visit. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:37
Sure enough, ?90 vanishes from his dad's wallet. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:41
Steve challenges the carers. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
My uncle confronted them, she threw a wad of notes at my uncle. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:48
Serial numbers on the notes matched the serial numbers | 0:18:48 | 0:18:50
that were written down, so that were brilliant, really. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:53
It were a good bit of thinking from my uncle, to be fair. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:57
So they called the police and they arrested them. | 0:18:57 | 0:19:00
And the so-called carers are charged. | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
They pleaded guilty to two counts of theft. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:08
In the face of such evidence, they had little choice. | 0:19:08 | 0:19:11
The mother got a six-month custodial sentence and the daughter 20 weeks, | 0:19:11 | 0:19:15
both suspended for two years. | 0:19:15 | 0:19:18
They must also carry out 200 hours of unpaid work | 0:19:18 | 0:19:21
and pay compensation and court costs. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
Jodie now looks after her grandad and they're closer than ever. | 0:19:27 | 0:19:32
It's nice cos you get that bit of extra time with him as well. | 0:19:32 | 0:19:34
We'll sit down, we'll have a brew, we'll have a chat. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
Sometimes a heated discussion, depending on what it's over. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:41
It is really nice to be able to do that for him. | 0:19:41 | 0:19:44
Norman's family are planning a special night for him soon. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:48
It is quite a big year this year, | 0:19:48 | 0:19:50
it's the 25th anniversary of the pub being open. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:54
He will be able to see how much he's loved and appreciated. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
And Norman can't wait to catch up with the regulars | 0:19:57 | 0:20:01
in his beloved bar. | 0:20:01 | 0:20:02
I just want a nice, peaceful life, good friends in the bar. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:07
That's what life's about, really. | 0:20:07 | 0:20:09
It's important to remember that there are only a few bad apples | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
amongst the millions of carers in the UK. But what can people do | 0:20:17 | 0:20:20
if they're suspicious that something isn't quite right? | 0:20:20 | 0:20:24
If you think somebody working in your home is potentially stealing | 0:20:24 | 0:20:27
from you, the best way to gather evidence is to keep a log | 0:20:27 | 0:20:31
of property or money that you have coming in, perhaps going out, | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
so that you can see when it's being taken and you can actually identify | 0:20:34 | 0:20:38
who was in the house at the time when it happened. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:40
If the person you suspect of stealing from your loved one | 0:20:40 | 0:20:44
finds either the hidden camera or the detailed diary | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
that you've been keeping, | 0:20:47 | 0:20:48
I would never advise to confront them face-to-face. | 0:20:48 | 0:20:52
I would perhaps come up with an excuse as to something | 0:20:52 | 0:20:55
like you're just looking after the loved one when you're not around | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
and just keeping a diary for that purpose | 0:20:58 | 0:21:01
and I would then, when you can, when you find an appropriate moment, | 0:21:01 | 0:21:04
contact the police and let them know what the situation is. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:07
I think it is really important if you've got concerns about somebody | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
you love being taken advantage of, come and speak to the police early. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:14
We can give you some advice, | 0:21:14 | 0:21:15
we can listen to what your concerns are | 0:21:15 | 0:21:17
and you might just have the missing piece of the jigsaw | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
that we need to put some information together. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:23
Corbridge in Northumberland is a quiet village | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
where nothing much happens - | 0:21:34 | 0:21:36
just the way the locals like it. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:39
Tourist information officer Steph has lived here for 15 years. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:45
I moved to Corbridge with my husband initially to develop a property | 0:21:45 | 0:21:49
and sell it on but we just fell in love with the place. | 0:21:49 | 0:21:53
I have three children now and I have no intention | 0:21:53 | 0:21:56
of ever moving from Corbridge. It is almost crime free, | 0:21:56 | 0:22:00
you never worry about leaving your bike outside the front of your house | 0:22:00 | 0:22:04
or anything like that. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:06
It's a very honest village. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:07
25 miles from Corbridge, in Durham Police's Chester-le-Street station, | 0:22:09 | 0:22:14
Detective Sergeant Andy Smith heads up a serious crime team. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:18
I've got just around about 25 years' service, | 0:22:19 | 0:22:22
predominately working within the CID. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:24
We deal with some of the most serious jobs | 0:22:24 | 0:22:26
that the force will face. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
Andy and his colleagues have recently been facing | 0:22:28 | 0:22:30
a series of raids on convenience stores | 0:22:30 | 0:22:33
in small towns and villages in the north-east. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:36
There have been a spate of premises in rural areas being attacked | 0:22:36 | 0:22:39
where there was ATM machines inside. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:42
Obviously what they were trying to do | 0:22:42 | 0:22:43
was get the cash out of the machines. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:45
And Andy's team has gathered intelligence | 0:22:45 | 0:22:47
that a gang's about to strike. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:49
That's what led us to be in Corbridge | 0:22:49 | 0:22:51
on the morning of the 8th of January. | 0:22:51 | 0:22:53
Despite Corbridge having one of the lowest crime rates | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
in the country, Steph and the other villagers are in for a shock. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:59
It's 4am and the cameras outside Corbridge's village store... | 0:23:03 | 0:23:07
..show two men approaching. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:09
Their faces are covered, so the identities are concealed | 0:23:11 | 0:23:14
and actually you can see that this guy here is on his mobile phone | 0:23:14 | 0:23:17
at that time. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:18
He may be calling other accomplices. | 0:23:18 | 0:23:21
Now you'll see they'll attack | 0:23:21 | 0:23:23
using crowbars and other tools and weapons. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:25
They know exactly what they're doing, | 0:23:25 | 0:23:27
they know how to force doors like that | 0:23:27 | 0:23:29
and how to get into the premises in a matter of seconds. | 0:23:29 | 0:23:32
The men quickly find their target - a cash machine. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:36
A car pulls up outside, | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
and three more men remove large straps from the boot | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43
while their accomplices dislodge the ATM. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
They wrapped that around the ATM machine | 0:23:47 | 0:23:50
and drive the car away to drag it out of the store. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:54
They're highly organised. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:56
He realises there's a CCTV camera, so they smashed that. | 0:23:57 | 0:24:01
But unknown to them, other cameras are still recording. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:05
And that's not their only problem. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:07
A strap isn't reaching the cash machine. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:10
They just haven't got the car close enough to the store. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:15
They're wasting valuable time. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:19
The cameras that have been recording this crime | 0:24:20 | 0:24:22
are about to witness its dramatic conclusion. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
Thanks to the information they received, | 0:24:25 | 0:24:28
Andy's colleagues have been waiting just around the corner | 0:24:28 | 0:24:31
and decide it's time to act. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:33
The burglars hear them arriving and try to escape. | 0:24:33 | 0:24:36
We were in the right place at the right time and we could react | 0:24:36 | 0:24:39
within minutes of them attacking the village store. | 0:24:39 | 0:24:41
The police park in front of the getaway car, blocking their escape. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:46
One of the burglars even tries to hide in the car boot | 0:24:46 | 0:24:49
before thinking better of it. It was the guy that was in the boot, | 0:24:49 | 0:24:52
I think he realised that that wasn't the best hiding place | 0:24:52 | 0:24:54
when his colleagues were in the process of being arrested, | 0:24:54 | 0:24:57
so he jumped out of the boot and tried to run away, | 0:24:57 | 0:24:59
but he was arrested just a few yards away. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:02
This is a dangerous operation for the officers. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:05
It's the middle of the night, they are five balaclava'd men, | 0:25:05 | 0:25:08
armed with tools which could be used as weapons | 0:25:08 | 0:25:10
to cause some serious harm to the arrest team. | 0:25:10 | 0:25:13
They saw what they were faced with | 0:25:13 | 0:25:14
and the most appropriate way to use the minimum force that was necessary | 0:25:14 | 0:25:18
was to Taser one of the suspects to get control of that person | 0:25:18 | 0:25:21
and, as a result of that, the remaining arrest team | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
could deal with the other offenders really, really well. | 0:25:24 | 0:25:27
The operation is a success. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:30
Five men are arrested at the scene | 0:25:30 | 0:25:32
but the officers suspect others are involved. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:36
We would expect them to have a second vehicle relatively close by | 0:25:36 | 0:25:40
which they can then put the ATM into | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
and drive with no real suspicion being raised. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:46
The police start searching the area | 0:25:46 | 0:25:49
and the locals realise something's up. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52
We heard the police helicopter, it was really, really low | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
and then light lit up the whole bedroom. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:57
We initially thought that somebody had went missing | 0:25:57 | 0:26:00
and were concerned for their wellbeing. | 0:26:00 | 0:26:03
Definitely didn't have any idea | 0:26:03 | 0:26:04
that it was going to be something like this. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:07
It was about 35 minutes later that we actually find the vehicle, | 0:26:07 | 0:26:11
parked up in a little cul-de-sac. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:14
Inside the transit van is another one of their associates | 0:26:14 | 0:26:17
and, as the police officers arrive, | 0:26:17 | 0:26:19
he's the process of trying to damage a mobile phone. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:22
With no incriminating CCTV footage of the suspect in the van, | 0:26:22 | 0:26:26
the police need to find alternative evidence to prove he was involved. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:30
Even though he tried to damage his phone, we could still retrieve | 0:26:30 | 0:26:33
the information that we needed, which proved he was in contact | 0:26:33 | 0:26:37
with the five burglars up until the point of his arrest. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:41
Andy shows the gang the CCTV evidence. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:44
They realise the game is up. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:47
Me and my team were responsible for interviewing the six suspects. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:50
They were quite accepting of the situation, | 0:26:50 | 0:26:54
they knew they'd been caught, they knew they were bang to rights. | 0:26:54 | 0:26:57
Every time a group of criminals like this goes out to commit crime, | 0:26:57 | 0:27:00
they have got to be lucky every night. | 0:27:00 | 0:27:03
We've only got to be lucky once. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:05
And, on this night, they were unlucky. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
In court, all six men pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary. | 0:27:11 | 0:27:16
They were sentenced to a combined total of 15 years in prison. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:20
Knowing the gang is behind bars | 0:27:26 | 0:27:28
is a huge relief for Steph and the community of Corbridge. | 0:27:28 | 0:27:32
Because the police responded so quickly and caught all of them, | 0:27:32 | 0:27:37
I think it almost... | 0:27:37 | 0:27:39
It reassured them a little bit and I think a lot of people, yeah, | 0:27:39 | 0:27:44
really wanted to give the police a pat on the back | 0:27:44 | 0:27:47
and congratulate them. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:49
It is a really rewarding, worthwhile result | 0:27:49 | 0:27:51
because this is an organised crime group. | 0:27:51 | 0:27:54
As a force, we showed that we can tackle them, | 0:27:54 | 0:27:57
we dealt with them and ultimately we sent to prison. | 0:27:57 | 0:28:00
I think the incident will be talked about for a long time. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:04
I think people will be telling their children and their grandchildren | 0:28:04 | 0:28:08
about it for a long time. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:10
That's it for today. And that's it for a few more criminals | 0:28:15 | 0:28:18
who've been Caught Red Handed. | 0:28:18 | 0:28:20
Need a medic. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:53
