In Britain today, young women like me take our basic freedom | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
and rights for granted. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
But for millions of girls around the world, simply being female can | 0:00:08 | 0:00:12
put their lives at risk. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
In this series, I'm going to be investigating | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
some of the toughest places in the world to be a girl. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
Tonight, I'm in the Philippines to reveal how the internet is | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
exposing a whole generation of girls to sexual exploitation. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:28
This pimp is offering young women | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
for sexual services to customers. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
I investigate the growth of online cybersex dens that let men abuse | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
girls from anywhere in the world, including the UK. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
So this 41-year-old wants to meet with you, even though | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
-he knows that you are 14. -Yes. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
I get closer than ever to the people trying to crack down on this | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
billion-dollar industry. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
Oh, my gosh. Turn the camera around. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
They are coming in. They are going in. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
And I confront the people responsible for these crimes. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
Did you have sex with any children? | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
You did horrific things. | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
-You did horrific things. -Yes, I know, I know, I know. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
This programme contains some strong language and scenes which some viewers may find disturbing. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:15
My name is Sweetie. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
I'm ten years old. I live in the Philippines. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
Every day I have to sit in front of the webcam | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
and talk to men. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
Just like tens of thousands of other kids. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
The men ask me to take off my clothes. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
They undress. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:42
They play with themselves. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
They want me to play with myself. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
As soon as I go online, they come to me. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:54
Ten... | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
100...every hour. | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
So many. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:00
Two years ago, | 0:02:03 | 0:02:04
ten-year-old Sweetie's profile appeared online in chatrooms | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
all over the world... | 0:02:07 | 0:02:09
with shocking results. | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
In just over two months, Sweetie was contacted by 20,000 people. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:18
But there's something they didn't know about Sweetie. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
I'm not real. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
I'm a computer model. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:26
Made piece by piece to track down these men who do this. | 0:02:26 | 0:02:31
I've come to the Philippines to find out more. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
Leonarda Kling works for the organisation that created Sweetie. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
Why was the character Filipino, why was that so necessary? | 0:02:45 | 0:02:49
We tried African nationalities, we tried East European | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
nationalities, and we tried Filipina nationalities. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
And as soon as the Filipina child came online, basically, | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
we were swamped by predators. All from all over the world. | 0:03:00 | 0:03:04
-Isn't that unbelievable? -It is, it is. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
And what exactly were they asking Sweetie to do? | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
They wanted her to remove her bra, for example, | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
play with herself. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
Sometimes have sex with one of her siblings. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
Things like that. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
It went very, very far. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:25
So of the 20,000 that initially contacted Sweetie, | 0:03:25 | 0:03:28
were there any repercussions? | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
We have 1,000 with names and addresses, and those 1,000 | 0:03:30 | 0:03:35
we handed over to the police in the respective countries. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:39
In the UK, for example, 110 perpetrators. | 0:03:39 | 0:03:43
-110? -110. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
-In my country alone? -In your country, Stacey, I'm sorry. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
And of those 1,000, were there any convictions? | 0:03:49 | 0:03:52
At the moment, there were convictions done in Poland, | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
in the UK as well, in Belgium, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:58
but it's only sad to say that six or eight have been convicted. | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
-But the police is working on it, we know that. -Six convictions? | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
Yes, six convictions. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:07
Last year, the police investigated 139 Brits suspected of paying to | 0:04:09 | 0:04:14
watch Filipino children being abused online. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:18
But that's just the tip of the iceberg. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:22
Both the UN and the FBI suspect that at any given time, | 0:04:22 | 0:04:26
there can be 750,000 people online | 0:04:26 | 0:04:29
interested in having sex with children. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
And to hear that the victims typically are young, vulnerable, | 0:04:32 | 0:04:36
poor and easy to manipulate, that's going to affect | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
so many of the girls here in the Philippines. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:42
It is estimated up to 100,000 children | 0:04:45 | 0:04:47
here are victims of sexual exploitation. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:51
Many are now being used for cybersex. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:53
I want to know why the Philippines has become the new hub | 0:04:55 | 0:04:58
for foreign men looking to abuse young girls online. | 0:04:58 | 0:05:01
But to do so means waiting until school finishes. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:07
One factor contributing to the rising problem is the recent | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
internet boom in the Philippines. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23
These cheap, high speed internet cafes are popping up all over | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
the Philippines now. And one peso will get you five minutes. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:33
This window to the web means that these sexual predators have | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
a perfect platform for when they want to pounce. | 0:05:36 | 0:05:39
I'm meeting 14-year-old Daisy, who spends her evenings online, | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
where she is regularly approached by men. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
This is you? | 0:05:48 | 0:05:49
You look older in the picture. | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
You look lovely. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
Who tends to contact you? | 0:05:55 | 0:05:57
Foreigners. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:00
Really? The last foreign man that | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
contacted you. What did he say? | 0:06:16 | 0:06:19
What was he like? | 0:06:19 | 0:06:20
This is now. This is live chat. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
Do you know who this man is? No. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
"Let's meet in your city," he has put. | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
41! | 0:06:37 | 0:06:39 | |
Oh, my gosh. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:41
This happens a lot? | 0:06:41 | 0:06:43
Oh, really. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
It is more fun for them. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
So this 41-year-old... | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
..wants to meet with you even though he knows that you're 14. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
Have you ever had any situation where you have met them? | 0:07:05 | 0:07:09
'Knowing full well that Daisy and her family were poor, | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
'the American man gave her £30 in exchange for sex.' | 0:07:27 | 0:07:31
Was that the first time you had ever been with a man? | 0:07:33 | 0:07:38
Yeah. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:39 | |
It's not your fault. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:48
It sounds like you did that | 0:07:48 | 0:07:50
because you thought that was the best thing to do to help your family. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:53
You are the child, and he is the adult. | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
I'm going to leave you to it, OK? It was so, so lovely talking to you. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
Yeah? | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07 | |
And you feel OK? Good. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:10
I was definitely surprised at how quickly she was approached. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:16
I couldn't have been in there any longer than five minutes, really. | 0:08:16 | 0:08:19
It's cyber grooming, that's exactly what it is. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
And perhaps the shocking thing is that this is all done on Facebook. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:28
Daisy is now under the watchful eye of a local charity. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
But many girls are not so lucky. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:34
Easy access to the internet in the Philippines means | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
more and more girls are being lured into the sex industry. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
Up to 400,000 women are trafficked every year. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:50
A third of them are children. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:52
I want to find out who these girls are and where they're coming from. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:57
So I head to the largest passenger port in the Philippines. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
I've joined Cecilia Obando, whose charity now | 0:09:07 | 0:09:10
intercepts up to 500 children a month in this one port alone. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:14
-So, that one. You see? -Ah, yeah, yeah, yeah. | 0:09:14 | 0:09:17
-It is a big ship, actually. -God, it is huge. -It is a huge ship. | 0:09:17 | 0:09:22
We have a report of 11 minors on board who are suspected trafficking... | 0:09:22 | 0:09:26
some of them trafficking... Suspected trafficking victims. | 0:09:26 | 0:09:30
So, typically, criminals will send out recruiters to perhaps | 0:09:30 | 0:09:34
some of the smaller islands and try and lure the children in? | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
-Yeah. -And the parents say, OK. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:39
Yes, some of the parents will also be saved, you know, | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
and promised to have schooling for the girls, you know, | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
or work or job. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:48
Some of them were actually forced into prostitution, | 0:09:48 | 0:09:52
they are brought to brothels. Some of them were actually cybersex. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
-Is cybersex something you've seen kick off fairly recently? -It is, yes. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:59
It is a new phenomenon for us here in the Philippines. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:03
-Because traffickers... -They are very smart. -They are very smart. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:08
They are businesspeople, you know. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
-Social worker. -I think now we have to move really quickly. -OK. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:15
-So when you say minors, what age are they? -18 years old. -18 years old. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:23
-Below. -And what is the youngest you've ever found? | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
-The youngest that we have is eight years old. -Eight? -Eight years old. | 0:10:26 | 0:10:30
-On their own? -Yes. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
'The traffickers won't be far from their victims | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
'and they'll be looking for any opportunity to snatch them back.' | 0:10:38 | 0:10:41
So here we are. This is where all the kids have been held. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
It is important they are kept isolated so they can't run away, | 0:10:52 | 0:10:56
they can't alert their traffickers... | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
that they're being suspected. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
Instead of 11 children, the ship staff have now | 0:11:02 | 0:11:05
identified 22 girls and boys who they suspect are being trafficked. | 0:11:05 | 0:11:09
So I'm completely clear, | 0:11:11 | 0:11:13
some of the kids in here have no guardian with them? | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
-No. -They don't have permission in writing? | 0:11:17 | 0:11:19
-No. -And they are the ones that you are most concerned about? -Yes. | 0:11:19 | 0:11:22
Cecilia is particularly worried about one very young looking girl. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:54
She's travelling with two older boys who claim they're her relatives. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
-The girl's story doesn't add up. -She's promised to work here. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:31
-But she don't know what kind of work. -Really? -Yes. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:34
And she is only 11 years old. | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
She's really afraid. She is really scared. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:39
Yes, she is very nervous, isn't she? Understandably so. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:43
-She is quite nervous. -Yeah. -So, OK, | 0:12:43 | 0:12:45
-we are just signing... -OK, great. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:48
Thank you, Cecilia. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:49
The very fact that she is here to work and she's 11... | 0:12:51 | 0:12:55
is illegal in itself, so I think she's going to try and stick | 0:12:55 | 0:12:59
quite close with this young girl, take her to the halfway house | 0:12:59 | 0:13:02
and try investigate further what exactly is going on. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
Based at the port, | 0:13:10 | 0:13:12
Cecilia's temporary shelter is already dealing with a further 30 | 0:13:12 | 0:13:15
unaccompanied children who have just been taken off another boat. | 0:13:15 | 0:13:19
The girls will only be released to genuine family members. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:36
Minors and their relatives are purposefully kept separate, | 0:13:36 | 0:13:40
and that's because often their stories don't match. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
So it might be that they are a genuine relative, | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
but actually, when they do background checks, if they're suspicious, | 0:13:46 | 0:13:49
they might own a spa or a massage parlour. That's happened in the past. | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
And they are recruiting their own family members to be involved. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:56
Further information has come to light about the 11-year-old girl. | 0:13:58 | 0:14:01
It seems, really, that she is for trafficking. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
Because we cannot establish these people who say they're going | 0:14:06 | 0:14:10
to pitch her. And in fact they are not here. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:13
And because she doesn't have any address, she said she is travelling | 0:14:13 | 0:14:16
with a cousin, but we cannot establish also the relationship. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:21
Traffickers receive £150-£500 per girl, | 0:14:21 | 0:14:25
but that is nothing compared to the sums | 0:14:25 | 0:14:27
they can earn long-term from girls they recruit into the sex industry. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:32
As long as the girls were actually under | 0:14:32 | 0:14:35
the claws of the trafficker, they can profit multiple times, | 0:14:35 | 0:14:38
because they are sold and resold so many times. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:41
That makes perfect sense. I didn't think of it like that. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:44
So a girl is more profitable if she is going to be used | 0:14:44 | 0:14:48
as a sex worker, because there are so many men that will pay for her. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:53
-It is a huge problem. -It is a huge problem. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
After further enquiries, | 0:14:56 | 0:14:58
Cecilia was convinced that five of the children were being trafficked. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:03
She eventually tracked down the mother of the 11-year-old girl, | 0:15:03 | 0:15:06
who made the 600-mile trip to collect her. | 0:15:06 | 0:15:10
Cecilia has recommended the girl's family be | 0:15:10 | 0:15:12
monitored by the local authorities, | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
but there is no guarantee she won't be trafficked again in the future. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:19
I've massively underestimated just how many young, vulnerable | 0:15:19 | 0:15:23
girls are popped on these ships, no guardian, no relative, | 0:15:23 | 0:15:29
and trafficked. | 0:15:29 | 0:15:30
Prostitution is nothing new in this part of the world. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:38
Right now, I'm in a place called Tondo, | 0:15:39 | 0:15:41
and this is the biggest slum in the whole of the Philippines. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
And people tell me that child prostitution particularly | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
is entrenched within this community. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:49
And on top of that, the age of consent here is 12 years old. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:53
So, historically, the younger girls have always been sexually active. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:57
I'm meeting a group of sex workers living close to the port, | 0:16:01 | 0:16:04
whose customers are sailors from all over the world. | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
I want to know what they make of the rise in cybersex. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
Hello. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:15
How are you, all right? | 0:16:15 | 0:16:17
I'm fine. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:19
Do either of you partake in cybersex here? | 0:16:19 | 0:16:21
Jackie, you have done cybersex? How do you find it? | 0:16:35 | 0:16:39
How many girls were there altogether? | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53
I want to talk to the young girl's pimp, known here as Mamasan. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:44
Hello. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:45
Marie. How do you do, Marie? I'm Stacey. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
-Can I come in? -Yes. -Thanks ever so much. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
Marie is happy to supply prostitutes as young as 13, | 0:17:51 | 0:17:55
but she doesn't like them doing cybersex. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
So you think the men behind the laptops are more ruthless, | 0:18:15 | 0:18:21
are more demanding? | 0:18:21 | 0:18:23
Marie might not approve of cybersex, but many other mamasans do. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:44
Last year, cases of girls being trafficked | 0:18:50 | 0:18:52
into the sex industry doubled. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:54
In a bid to clamp down, the government set up a special | 0:18:56 | 0:18:59
task force whose job it is to catch traffickers in the act. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
Tonight, I've been granted privileged access to an undercover operation. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:09
Basically the operation involves an entrapment | 0:19:09 | 0:19:12
of a well-known pimp who has been the subject of the surveillance. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:17
Look very closely at the information on the suspect - black hair, | 0:19:17 | 0:19:21
female impersonator. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
He is a man pretending to be a woman. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:27
And this pimp, lady... | 0:19:27 | 0:19:31
is offering young women for sale, | 0:19:31 | 0:19:34
for sexual services to customers. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
If the suspect will resist arrest, you can employ opposing force, OK? | 0:19:37 | 0:19:42
OK, so they're just going through the briefing now. | 0:19:44 | 0:19:47
My understanding is that they're after one pimp, essentially, | 0:19:47 | 0:19:52
and they describe her as a lady impersonator, | 0:19:52 | 0:19:56
so I don't know whether she's transgender, | 0:19:56 | 0:19:58
or if she's dressed in drag, and she's meant to look after | 0:19:58 | 0:20:02
at least five young girls who are sex workers. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:05
She has promised these five girls to their undercover police officer. | 0:20:05 | 0:20:10
The operation is being led by chief prosecutor Jonathan Lledo. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:15
If tonight is successful, the suspect will face harsh new penalties. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:20
If any of the victims are minors, | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
meaning they're below 18 years of age, | 0:20:22 | 0:20:24
that automatically increases or aggravates the offence | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28
to qualified trafficking in persons, | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
for which the penalty will be life imprisonment, | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
-and he has to pay a fine of about two million pesos. -Wow. | 0:20:34 | 0:20:38
The penalty is really harsh. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:39
But getting the evidence to charge this trafficker is going to be | 0:20:39 | 0:20:43
extremely difficult, as the police must witness the suspect | 0:20:43 | 0:20:45
receiving money in exchange for the girls, | 0:20:45 | 0:20:48
and if I want to observe this, | 0:20:48 | 0:20:50
I'll have to do something I've never done before. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:53
Hopefully the initial meeting will start in this restaurant. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:56
Now, the police have agreed that I can come along on the understanding | 0:20:56 | 0:20:59
that I do not jeopardise the arrest and rescue, so I'm going to switch... | 0:20:59 | 0:21:04
..and use this secret camera. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:09
The crew and main camera will wait in the van parked outside | 0:21:19 | 0:21:23
the restaurant. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:24
The undercover officer takes his place. | 0:21:35 | 0:21:38
To safeguard future operations, we can't reveal his identity. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:42
The undercover officer receives a text from the suspect. | 0:22:12 | 0:22:16
With the punishment for trafficking so severe, criminals know that | 0:23:11 | 0:23:15
one wrong move could land them in jail for the rest of their life. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:19
The suspect has asked for the exchange to take place | 0:23:39 | 0:23:42
away from the restaurant, in the undercover officer's car. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:46
Desperate to know what's going on, I call the chief prosecutor. | 0:23:56 | 0:24:00
Hello. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:03
Catching traffickers in the act is always a challenge. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:23
So, Jonathan, what's the story? What happened? | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
Unfortunately, he got away | 0:24:27 | 0:24:29
because he declined to step into the car, but it was a good day. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:34
Four girls will be safe from being trafficked tonight. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
One of the girls is a minor, she admitted that she's a minor, | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
so we have a case against the target, against the pimp. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:45
When you next see this particular pimp, will you be able to arrest her? | 0:24:45 | 0:24:49
Well, technically, no, | 0:24:49 | 0:24:52
because when we see him and he's not doing anything illegal, | 0:24:52 | 0:24:58
we can't just pick him off the streets, no? | 0:24:58 | 0:25:01
This pimp may have escaped justice, | 0:25:01 | 0:25:03
but the police are carrying out regular raids | 0:25:03 | 0:25:05
and I'm hoping to be there the next time they swing into action. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:09
The girls don't want to talk to the police right now, | 0:25:11 | 0:25:13
they don't want to talk to anyone and, interestingly, | 0:25:13 | 0:25:16
often they'll look at them and think, | 0:25:16 | 0:25:18
"You have ruined my only chance of making any money." | 0:25:18 | 0:25:21
There isn't that sense of relief always, | 0:25:21 | 0:25:23
"Thank, God, you've come to rescue me," | 0:25:23 | 0:25:25
but when you're so desperate, you will, | 0:25:25 | 0:25:27
you'll do almost anything | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29
and the police are often seen as the bad guys. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:32
It's a point I want to take up with leading Filipino journalist | 0:25:38 | 0:25:42
Ana Santos. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:43
A lot of these families are living in such extreme poverty, | 0:25:45 | 0:25:49
what other ways are there of making reasonably decent money? | 0:25:49 | 0:25:53
For the girls it's very limited in terms of opportunities, | 0:25:53 | 0:25:56
especially if you're young. | 0:25:56 | 0:25:57
You can't work in the department store, for example. | 0:25:57 | 0:26:00
The boys would at least be able to get odd construction jobs, right? | 0:26:00 | 0:26:06
The girls might not be able to do that, so more and more, I think, | 0:26:06 | 0:26:08
they're more economically challenged in terms of opportunity, | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
especially when they're young. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:13
Talk me through the transition into cybersex now. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:16
I think, well, the way that technology is, it's going to be | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
the way to go for prostitution as well as any other kind of business. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:22
I think there's that lure that cybersex is easy money. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:25
They get the money from the US, from Europe | 0:26:25 | 0:26:27
and they'll know that those are, what, five minutes, 20? | 0:26:27 | 0:26:30
How long is it going to take them to earn that much on the street? | 0:26:30 | 0:26:33
Are families aware of what's going on? | 0:26:34 | 0:26:36
Not all, but there are some parents, sadly, | 0:26:36 | 0:26:40
who are the ones who are putting their children forward. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:43
You have to remember, some of the mums were prostitutes before | 0:26:43 | 0:26:46
and when they go into, like, cyber, for example, what happens | 0:26:46 | 0:26:49
is the customers will ask them, "Don't you have somebody younger?" | 0:26:49 | 0:26:54
And rather than the money going elsewhere, | 0:26:54 | 0:26:57
they'll have their kids do it. | 0:26:57 | 0:26:59
I've had some, I've had a mamasan tell me, you know, I ask them, | 0:26:59 | 0:27:03
"She's 14, she's 13, don't you feel guilty about, you know, | 0:27:03 | 0:27:06
"she sells herself, or you agree to send her on a boat | 0:27:06 | 0:27:08
"where she'll pick up some sailor?" And she'll say, | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
"Well, she's going to get fucked anyway, | 0:27:11 | 0:27:12
"she might as well get fucked for money." | 0:27:12 | 0:27:14
-And that's the mentality? -Yep, that's the mentality. | 0:27:14 | 0:27:18
It's horrifying to learn parents are sexually abusing their own | 0:27:20 | 0:27:24
children online for financial gain. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:26
To find out more, I'm flying to a part of the country | 0:27:28 | 0:27:31
where this is rife. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:32
Cebu has been dubbed as the home of cybersex | 0:27:35 | 0:27:38
and for many of its residents, internet child pornography | 0:27:38 | 0:27:42
is far more lucrative than fishing or factory work, | 0:27:42 | 0:27:45
and this means that often parents will pimp out their own children | 0:27:45 | 0:27:49
in these makeshift secretive sex dens, sometimes in their own homes. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:54
The most notorious example is Eileen Ontong, | 0:27:56 | 0:27:59
who dubbed herself the queen of cybersex. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:02
I'm keen to speak to her, | 0:28:03 | 0:28:05
but first, I want to find out more from the man who arrested her, | 0:28:05 | 0:28:08
Jamal Dimaporo. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:11
How many children do you reckon have been abused because of Eileen? | 0:28:11 | 0:28:16
Based on the pictures, images that we gathered, | 0:28:16 | 0:28:21
around 30 children, from age five to 15, 16. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:27
When we arrested her, | 0:28:27 | 0:28:30
they were about to have a show, yes, with her daughter. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:35
-We gathered very disturbing images of young children. -How young? | 0:28:35 | 0:28:42
-About from five years old. -Five? -Yes, the youngest maybe, or less. | 0:28:42 | 0:28:48
-Just completely horrific, horrifying for these kids. -Very disturbing. | 0:28:48 | 0:28:54
These shows were so lucrative, | 0:28:54 | 0:28:57
Eileen even recruited neighbouring families to meet the growing demand. | 0:28:57 | 0:29:01
The money transfer earned about, I mean, more than 1 million. | 0:29:01 | 0:29:08
-No. -Yes. 1 million? Yes. -US dollars? -Yes. | 0:29:08 | 0:29:13
And how many suspects? | 0:29:15 | 0:29:17
-About 14 suspects. -Just 14? -Yes, in that area alone. | 0:29:17 | 0:29:22
I get totally, 100%, that poverty... | 0:29:22 | 0:29:26
drives people sometimes to do very desperate things. | 0:29:26 | 0:29:32
But there are levels, aren't there? | 0:29:32 | 0:29:34
And the idea that this woman, who was supposed to be the only person | 0:29:36 | 0:29:42
in the whole of Cebu to protect her daughter, | 0:29:42 | 0:29:47
was the very person abusing her... | 0:29:47 | 0:29:51
..is one of the saddest things I've heard in a really long time. | 0:29:55 | 0:29:58
I'm desperate to confront Eileen. | 0:30:04 | 0:30:06
She and her lawyer have agreed to meet me at the prison | 0:30:08 | 0:30:11
where she's being held. | 0:30:11 | 0:30:13
Thank you very much. I just make my own way up? OK. | 0:30:23 | 0:30:26
I think it this way. | 0:30:31 | 0:30:33
They've, literally, just left me to it. | 0:30:33 | 0:30:35
This maximum security prison was built to hold 1,600 men and women, | 0:30:40 | 0:30:45
but currently has over 2,000 inmates. | 0:30:45 | 0:30:49
To be honest with you, I've never been in a prison quite like this. | 0:30:51 | 0:30:56
I've been to so many now, all around the world, but I've always got | 0:30:56 | 0:30:59
a warden, I've always got some kind of authority figure with me. | 0:30:59 | 0:31:03
Here, they've just completely left me to my own devices | 0:31:03 | 0:31:07
and everyone's walking around freely. | 0:31:07 | 0:31:09
The kids are here, it's Sunday, it's visiting hours. | 0:31:09 | 0:31:12
I'm sure I'm amongst mass murderers and rapists, | 0:31:12 | 0:31:16
and other women who have exploited children. | 0:31:16 | 0:31:20
I mean, it is pretty unbelievable the way these ladies are living. | 0:31:20 | 0:31:24
-How many? -15. -15? -Yeah. | 0:31:24 | 0:31:27
15 people in this one cell. Wow. | 0:31:27 | 0:31:31
It's hot, it's cramped... | 0:31:31 | 0:31:33
it's smelly, there's lots of older ladies here. | 0:31:33 | 0:31:38
What a way to live. | 0:31:40 | 0:31:42
I can only meet Eileen in the presence of her lawyer, | 0:31:42 | 0:31:45
but there's no sign of him yet. | 0:31:45 | 0:31:47
-Hello. -Hi! How are you? -I like your singing. | 0:31:47 | 0:31:52
-What are you doing? Oh, bingo. -Do you know how to play bingo? | 0:31:52 | 0:31:57
-Yeah, I can play bingo. How long are you girls inside for? -Me? -Yeah. | 0:31:57 | 0:32:02
-I'm here for ten years. -For ten years? -Yeah. -Wow. | 0:32:02 | 0:32:06
-You know why I am here? -Why? | 0:32:06 | 0:32:09
-I am here to speak to a lady called Eileen. -Eileen? -You know her? | 0:32:09 | 0:32:14
-Yeah. -Eileen Ontong. -She's there. Eileen. | 0:32:14 | 0:32:18
-This is Eileen? -No, she's there. | 0:32:18 | 0:32:21
-Oh, she's in this cell? -Yes. -She's here? No. -She's here. | 0:32:21 | 0:32:26
I don't know if she wants to... I don't know if she... | 0:32:26 | 0:32:30
Wow, this is Eileen. This is Eileen. | 0:32:30 | 0:32:34
-Can you take off the camera? -Of course. We won't film you. | 0:32:37 | 0:32:40
-So, Eileen? -Yes, I am. -I am Stacey. | 0:32:40 | 0:32:43
'It turns out Eileen no longer wants to appear on camera | 0:32:43 | 0:32:47
'and although she told her lawyer, he neglected to tell me.' | 0:32:47 | 0:32:51
OK, we weren't aware of that. | 0:32:51 | 0:32:53
I'm really gutted she wouldn't allow the camera in, | 0:32:53 | 0:32:56
because if you could see her, you'd be gobsmacked. | 0:32:56 | 0:32:58
She's like a dumpy, short, middle-aged...woman. | 0:32:58 | 0:33:04
She looks like your aunt, you know what I mean? It's... | 0:33:04 | 0:33:07
..unbelievable that she led the life she did. | 0:33:10 | 0:33:16
However, whilst Eileen doesn't want to be interviewed, | 0:33:16 | 0:33:19
one of her cellmates does. | 0:33:19 | 0:33:21
Hey. You want to talk? Fantastic. | 0:33:21 | 0:33:25
-Do you speak English? -A little. -A little bit? -Yeah. | 0:33:25 | 0:33:27
-But your friend is going to come? -Yes. -Perfect. | 0:33:27 | 0:33:29
-Are you happy with that? -Yes. -Thank you. | 0:33:29 | 0:33:31
That's really, really helpful. | 0:33:31 | 0:33:33
Dindin is charged with abusing children in a cybersex den. | 0:33:33 | 0:33:37
She claims she's innocent and wants to tell her side of the story. | 0:33:37 | 0:33:41
-Did you have sex with any children? -No. -Really? -Yeah. | 0:33:50 | 0:33:55
I find it hard to believe that you would be sat here | 0:34:08 | 0:34:11
if they had no evidence of any children being involved, | 0:34:11 | 0:34:16
but you are telling me, categorically, | 0:34:16 | 0:34:19
no children were ever, ever involved, not even once? | 0:34:19 | 0:34:23
No. | 0:34:23 | 0:34:26 | |
-Just you, yourself? -Yes. | 0:34:26 | 0:34:28
Well, thank you for your time. Thank you. | 0:34:28 | 0:34:30
'Dindin seems sincere, but before I leave, | 0:34:30 | 0:34:34
'a quick background check reveals she hasn't been honest with me.' | 0:34:34 | 0:34:38
I've just found out that that woman I've just been speaking to | 0:34:42 | 0:34:45
is one of the most prolific cases here in Cebu. | 0:34:45 | 0:34:48
I mean, up there with Eileen Ontong. | 0:34:48 | 0:34:51
She was introduced to me by her nickname, as I'm leaving, I ask, | 0:34:51 | 0:34:55
"What's your full name?" Maricel Ayat. | 0:34:55 | 0:34:58
That name rang a bell because I've heard the authorities | 0:34:58 | 0:35:01
speak about her, so I've just jumped online | 0:35:01 | 0:35:03
and it's all here in black-and-white. | 0:35:03 | 0:35:05
They had evidence of her forcing a two-year-old, a nine-year-old | 0:35:05 | 0:35:10
and an 11-year-old to perform lewd sex acts in front of a web camera | 0:35:10 | 0:35:17
for foreign child predators who paid a fee. | 0:35:17 | 0:35:21
I'm shaking. | 0:35:21 | 0:35:22
I need to speak to her. | 0:35:25 | 0:35:27
-Hello. -Hi. -So, Evelyn, thank you for agreeing to talk to me again. | 0:35:29 | 0:35:34
You have been really helpful and you introduced me | 0:35:34 | 0:35:38
to your friend as Dindin, so I was addressing you as Dindin. | 0:35:38 | 0:35:42
When I found out your full name, you are actually Maricel Ayat. | 0:35:42 | 0:35:47
I think you have been lying this whole time. | 0:35:47 | 0:35:50
I believe that you did force a two-year-old, a nine-year-old | 0:35:50 | 0:35:53
and an 11-year-old to perform sex acts for foreign customers. | 0:35:53 | 0:35:58
The thing is, you are not going to find the courage to be honest, | 0:36:07 | 0:36:11
because you haven't, you've been lying to me this whole time | 0:36:11 | 0:36:14
and I took pity on you. You said, "I'm innocent," and I believed you. | 0:36:14 | 0:36:17
I thought you had stripped because you were desperate. | 0:36:17 | 0:36:20
You've been lying. Is this your computer? | 0:36:20 | 0:36:24
-Is that in your house? -Hm. -Yes? That is your house. | 0:36:24 | 0:36:29
So these are all the pictures, this is all the evidence. | 0:36:29 | 0:36:32
This is where they found the kids. | 0:36:33 | 0:36:35
This is where they found the two-year-old, | 0:36:37 | 0:36:39
the nine-year-old and the 11-year-old. | 0:36:39 | 0:36:41
Is there anything you want to say? | 0:36:41 | 0:36:43
I-I-I...I feel... | 0:36:54 | 0:36:58
angry, I feel frustrated, I've got the shakes and I feel sorry for her, | 0:36:58 | 0:37:02
like a total mug... | 0:37:02 | 0:37:04
I had to go back, but... I'd better go. | 0:37:04 | 0:37:08
Remarkably, both Eileen and Maricel came from the same tiny village. | 0:37:18 | 0:37:23
Last year, it was claimed that 80 houses were involved | 0:37:26 | 0:37:29
in cybersex in this area alone. | 0:37:29 | 0:37:31
It's definitely not as friendly round here. | 0:37:34 | 0:37:37
Before setting off, the village mayor told our production team that | 0:37:38 | 0:37:41
he did not want us to film here. | 0:37:41 | 0:37:44
I've got to say this is the first time I've been warned | 0:37:44 | 0:37:47
about going in a particular neighbourhood. | 0:37:47 | 0:37:49
Eileen Ontong's house is just close by. | 0:37:49 | 0:37:53
So, you don't know, there still might be people operating here | 0:37:53 | 0:37:55
who don't want to see us with the camera. | 0:37:55 | 0:37:57
'Parents abusing their own children behind closed doors | 0:37:59 | 0:38:03
'makes this one of the hardest crimes to detect.' | 0:38:03 | 0:38:07
You can come. | 0:38:07 | 0:38:09
Right. I'm under strict instructions that I can't stand directly outside | 0:38:10 | 0:38:15
her house, because her family aren't happy about us being here. | 0:38:15 | 0:38:21
Yeah, we are official too. | 0:38:24 | 0:38:26
BBC, London. | 0:38:26 | 0:38:29
BBC, England. | 0:38:29 | 0:38:31
I think we have to be quick. | 0:38:34 | 0:38:36
I just wanted to bring you here, | 0:38:36 | 0:38:37
because this is where Eileen Ontong lived. | 0:38:37 | 0:38:40
We're very, very, very close to her house | 0:38:40 | 0:38:43
and this is where most of the abuse took place, | 0:38:43 | 0:38:45
all of them kids. | 0:38:45 | 0:38:47
I'm told that her stepdaughter killed herself, | 0:38:47 | 0:38:50
whilst the abuse was taking place. | 0:38:50 | 0:38:53
I'm amazed that such a quiet, mundane village | 0:38:55 | 0:38:59
could be the scene of such awful events. | 0:38:59 | 0:39:02
Events that could be repeated across thousands of homes | 0:39:02 | 0:39:06
all over the Philippines. | 0:39:06 | 0:39:07
So far, I've met some of the perpetrators inflicting | 0:39:12 | 0:39:16
these terrible acts, but now I want to see what is being done to help | 0:39:16 | 0:39:20
the survivors who have suffered at their hands. | 0:39:20 | 0:39:23
I'm travelling 100 miles north-west of Manila, to a shelter that | 0:39:24 | 0:39:28
offers therapy and counselling to children who have been rescued. | 0:39:28 | 0:39:32
Oh, these might be some of the girls. | 0:39:33 | 0:39:36
Oh, she's lovely. | 0:39:36 | 0:39:37
She was super beautiful. | 0:39:39 | 0:39:41
They all are, that's the thing. | 0:39:44 | 0:39:45
Beautiful, polite and poor. | 0:39:49 | 0:39:53
Perfect mix for the recruiters. | 0:39:53 | 0:39:56
The shelter is in a remote area of the Philippines. | 0:40:00 | 0:40:03
There are currently 29 girls in this shelter | 0:40:13 | 0:40:16
and the youngest is seven years old. | 0:40:16 | 0:40:18
And they're vulnerable from the start, | 0:40:19 | 0:40:22
whether it's extreme poverty or hunger, absent parents, | 0:40:22 | 0:40:26
abuse at home, and the traffickers are smart and that's who they target. | 0:40:26 | 0:40:31
The girls who have been sexually abused go through various | 0:40:35 | 0:40:38
stages of treatment. | 0:40:38 | 0:40:39
Inhale, exhale. | 0:41:01 | 0:41:03
THEY SCREAM | 0:41:11 | 0:41:13
This is emotional expression therapy. | 0:41:14 | 0:41:17
It's aim is to allow the girls to release pent-up feelings | 0:41:17 | 0:41:21
towards their abusers. | 0:41:21 | 0:41:22
These shocking sessions are led by psychiatrist Mary. | 0:41:22 | 0:41:27
GIRLS SCREAMING AND SOBBING | 0:41:37 | 0:41:40
Wow. | 0:42:14 | 0:42:16 | |
That was very, very full-on. | 0:42:16 | 0:42:19
Why is it necessary, this therapy? | 0:42:19 | 0:42:21
The therapy sessions that we have focuses on their anger | 0:42:21 | 0:42:27
towards their family, their mother and their abuser. | 0:42:27 | 0:42:31
They release it here in the sessions. | 0:42:31 | 0:42:34
You obviously think it's healthy, it's necessary. | 0:42:34 | 0:42:38
Yes, of course it's very necessary, especially to me. | 0:42:38 | 0:42:42
I'm also a survivor of child abuse, when I was 12 years old, | 0:42:42 | 0:42:46
and I myself experienced the emotional expression therapy during my time. | 0:42:46 | 0:42:52
It helps me disclose the abuse I've been through. | 0:42:52 | 0:42:56
It helps the therapist and the social worker | 0:42:56 | 0:43:00
in preparing the statements of the children. | 0:43:00 | 0:43:03
It helps in expressing their emotions, in disclosing the abuse | 0:43:03 | 0:43:09
they've been through, so this therapy session is really helpful. | 0:43:09 | 0:43:13
When you're interacting with the kids, | 0:43:19 | 0:43:22
they're so smiley and they're so polite and they're playing | 0:43:22 | 0:43:25
in the playground with their pals and then, you see... | 0:43:25 | 0:43:29
how angry... | 0:43:29 | 0:43:32
they are... | 0:43:32 | 0:43:35
and it brings it straight back home. These kids have been... | 0:43:35 | 0:43:39
..abused in such a way that some of them... | 0:43:41 | 0:43:44
..are completely broken. | 0:43:46 | 0:43:49
Many of the girls are still struggling to come to terms | 0:43:51 | 0:43:54
with their abuse. | 0:43:54 | 0:43:57
But 18-year-old Lani has successfully been through the therapy | 0:43:57 | 0:44:00
after being trafficked into a cybersex den at the age of 15. | 0:44:00 | 0:44:05
Give me an idea of what's going on inside your mind | 0:44:05 | 0:44:09
when you realise, "I am here to perform cybersex." | 0:44:09 | 0:44:13
How do you feel? | 0:44:13 | 0:44:15
And if you refused, "No, I'm not doing it," | 0:44:34 | 0:44:37
what would your boss have done? | 0:44:37 | 0:44:40
-She won't feed you? -Yeah. | 0:44:41 | 0:44:42
And the foreign customers, | 0:44:49 | 0:44:52
how many of them were British? | 0:44:52 | 0:44:54
You can't count them? | 0:44:58 | 0:45:00
And what are they like? | 0:45:00 | 0:45:02
What do they look like - old, young? | 0:45:02 | 0:45:04
After five months, Lani was eventually rescued by the police. | 0:45:09 | 0:45:13
Did you feel relief or did you feel, | 0:45:14 | 0:45:17
"Oh, how am I going to get money now?" | 0:45:17 | 0:45:20
So things are much better now. What's the plan? | 0:45:28 | 0:45:30
What you want to do? | 0:45:30 | 0:45:32
What do you want to do as a job? | 0:45:39 | 0:45:41
COCK CROWS | 0:45:41 | 0:45:43
Oh, OK! | 0:45:43 | 0:45:45
Yeah. Business studies. Yes. | 0:45:46 | 0:45:47
Although no official statistics exist, | 0:45:49 | 0:45:53
it's believed that tens of thousands of kids like Lani | 0:45:53 | 0:45:56
are living in shelters all over the Philippines. | 0:45:56 | 0:45:59
I've had a call and I'm headed back to Manila. | 0:46:07 | 0:46:10
The police have another suspect they believe is recruiting girls | 0:46:10 | 0:46:14
and running a cybersex den. | 0:46:14 | 0:46:16
Today, the plan is to spend some time with | 0:46:17 | 0:46:19
the National Bureau Of Investigation here, and they are collaborating with | 0:46:19 | 0:46:23
two American agents from Homeland Security, | 0:46:23 | 0:46:25
so they've flown over especially for this. | 0:46:25 | 0:46:28
They've had their eye on this one suspect for some time | 0:46:28 | 0:46:31
and today they're hoping to capture them. | 0:46:31 | 0:46:33
The situation here is so serious, police from all over the world | 0:46:36 | 0:46:40
are now collaborating with the Philippine authorities. | 0:46:40 | 0:46:44
Today, American agents have supplied vital intelligence to the NBI's | 0:46:44 | 0:46:49
Anti-Human Trafficking Division, who hope to make the arrest. | 0:46:49 | 0:46:53
After continually abusing the girls online, the suspect is now | 0:47:15 | 0:47:20
offering to supply them to the undercover US investigators. | 0:47:20 | 0:47:23
I'm given access to the agents as they set up the deal. | 0:47:25 | 0:47:28
So right now, the agent from Homeland Security | 0:47:37 | 0:47:41
is talking with the suspect. | 0:47:41 | 0:47:44
The chat is live. | 0:47:44 | 0:47:45
He's promising...that there are going to be a large amount of girls. | 0:47:47 | 0:47:51
Potentially more if necessary at a later date. They are all underage. | 0:47:53 | 0:47:58
The youngest is 11. They will do anything he wants them to do. | 0:47:59 | 0:48:06
And now I believe the agent is asking to see them. | 0:48:06 | 0:48:10
He wants the suspect to turn the camera on, so that | 0:48:10 | 0:48:13
they have visual evidence. | 0:48:13 | 0:48:15
Oh. | 0:48:27 | 0:48:29 | |
So, the suspect has turned his webcam on | 0:48:34 | 0:48:38
and I can see numerous girls. | 0:48:38 | 0:48:42
Waving... | 0:48:48 | 0:48:49
Laughing... And it looks like forced laughter. | 0:48:51 | 0:48:56
And they're sitting on a bed and they look so young. | 0:48:56 | 0:49:00
Eight? | 0:49:03 | 0:49:05
One of the girls is eight years old. | 0:49:06 | 0:49:08
So I think everyone is feeling confident that they have | 0:49:17 | 0:49:20
sufficient evidence to now go. | 0:49:20 | 0:49:22
I can feel the adrenaline. | 0:49:27 | 0:49:29
Agent Janet Francisco allows me | 0:49:40 | 0:49:43
to travel with her as she follows the SWAT team to the suspect's house. | 0:49:43 | 0:49:47
You mentioned is that this guy is particularly disgusting. | 0:49:47 | 0:49:52
-Yes. -To put it in your words, tell me what he was doing? | 0:49:52 | 0:49:56
Yeah, because... | 0:49:56 | 0:49:58
the undercover agent... | 0:49:58 | 0:50:00
..he saw video | 0:50:02 | 0:50:05
involving a child with the subject | 0:50:05 | 0:50:09
having actual sexual intercourse, OK? | 0:50:09 | 0:50:12
So we see this is really a horrible case | 0:50:12 | 0:50:16
and that we really need to rescue the victim. | 0:50:16 | 0:50:19
And there's an actual online live sexual video streaming | 0:50:19 | 0:50:23
that happened this morning. | 0:50:23 | 0:50:25
So we really need to rescue the child. | 0:50:25 | 0:50:28
How are you feeling, nervous? | 0:50:31 | 0:50:33
-No, I'm mad. -You're mad. -Yes. -Because of what you've seen? -Yes. | 0:50:33 | 0:50:40
So there's really, you know, many sex offenders here nowadays, | 0:50:42 | 0:50:46
so we have to give them their lessons. | 0:50:46 | 0:50:50
-What's the story? -We have to wait. | 0:51:12 | 0:51:15
INDISTINCT VOICE OVER RADIO | 0:51:25 | 0:51:27
-OK. We're going. -Going out, going now. | 0:51:28 | 0:51:32
This is it, we're going. | 0:51:34 | 0:51:36
Wow. | 0:51:44 | 0:51:45 | |
-So that's the target. -Oh, my gosh! Turn the camera around, look. | 0:51:49 | 0:51:54
-Yeah, yeah, there. -They're going in, they're going in. -Oh, no, no, no. | 0:51:54 | 0:51:58
Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh! Come in, come in. | 0:52:04 | 0:52:07
Come in. The kids are here the suspect is here. | 0:52:10 | 0:52:12
How many girls? GIRLS SOB | 0:52:24 | 0:52:26
I cannot do the count. | 0:52:26 | 0:52:28
SOBBING CONTINUES | 0:52:28 | 0:52:30
You can see the suspect has been apprehended. On the floor. | 0:52:34 | 0:52:39
The suspect is a male student nurse. | 0:52:41 | 0:52:44
This way. | 0:52:53 | 0:52:55
GIRL SOBS | 0:52:55 | 0:52:56
This side for this girl. | 0:52:59 | 0:53:01
The eight girls rescued are taken by social workers to a safe house. | 0:53:04 | 0:53:08
-So am I OK to speak to the suspect? -Yes. -Excuse me. -Yes. | 0:53:10 | 0:53:15
Is there anything that you would like to say? | 0:53:15 | 0:53:17
-TRANSLATION: -I would like to say I'm sorry to all what I've done. | 0:53:17 | 0:53:21
You're sorry for everything you've done. Why did you do it? | 0:53:21 | 0:53:24
-Because of...poverty, being poor. -Because of poverty. -Yeah. | 0:53:24 | 0:53:30
Do you understand that sorry isn't enough, because you raped a child? | 0:53:30 | 0:53:34
I know it is not enough to say sorry and... | 0:53:34 | 0:53:38
I'd go rather to jail for me. If my sorry is not enough, | 0:53:38 | 0:53:43
I would like to go to jail. | 0:53:43 | 0:53:46
Well, the likelihood is you're going to spend | 0:53:46 | 0:53:49
the rest of your life in prison. How does that make you feel? | 0:53:49 | 0:53:53
-It's very, very funny to hear that. -But it's the truth. | 0:53:53 | 0:53:58
It's very early... | 0:53:58 | 0:54:01
-And I'm not really a bad person. -You did horrific things. | 0:54:01 | 0:54:06
-You did horrific things. -I know, I know, I know. I know that. | 0:54:06 | 0:54:09
A search of the suspect's house reveals more damning evidence. | 0:54:11 | 0:54:15
Where were most of your customers from? | 0:54:17 | 0:54:19
The USA, UK, Germany, Australia. | 0:54:19 | 0:54:22
-The US, the UK, Germany and Australia. -Yes. | 0:54:22 | 0:54:26
Similar operations are happening all over the world. | 0:54:26 | 0:54:30
In the UK, there have been 17 arrests. | 0:54:30 | 0:54:33
Unbelievable. | 0:54:35 | 0:54:36
Complete mayhem, but such a success for the authorities. | 0:54:36 | 0:54:40
So many kids saved. They were tiny. There was one... | 0:54:40 | 0:54:43
..no bigger than that. | 0:54:45 | 0:54:46
-So that's it, finished? -Yeah. -Finished. So that's it. | 0:54:54 | 0:54:58
That's what a cybersex den looks like here in the Philippines. | 0:54:58 | 0:55:01
Back at base, it hasn't taken the police long to pick up | 0:55:06 | 0:55:09
another suspect, | 0:55:09 | 0:55:11
putting a cybersex den permanently out of action. | 0:55:11 | 0:55:15
But police are already moving on to the next targets. | 0:55:17 | 0:55:20
I just learned there is yet another case and this is involving | 0:55:21 | 0:55:25
five suspected cybersex dens in five different homes. | 0:55:25 | 0:55:30
They're in the process currently of gathering all the evidence, | 0:55:30 | 0:55:33
so all the while they're not able to get in, | 0:55:33 | 0:55:36
kids are still probably inside being abused. | 0:55:36 | 0:55:39
In my short time here I've been shocked by the sheer scale | 0:55:44 | 0:55:48
of the cybersex industry. | 0:55:48 | 0:55:49
But if the police forces around the world keep working together | 0:55:49 | 0:55:53
and these raids continue, | 0:55:53 | 0:55:55
there is at least a chance of controlling this awful trade. | 0:55:55 | 0:55:59
Next week I'll be travelling to Honduras, | 0:56:02 | 0:56:04
the country with the highest murder rate for young women. | 0:56:04 | 0:56:08
He took his gun and shot Maria 12 times. | 0:56:08 | 0:56:12
Nice to meet you. | 0:56:12 | 0:56:13
'I'll meet survivors of horrific attacks...' | 0:56:13 | 0:56:16
'..as I try to get to the bottom of why Honduras is | 0:56:18 | 0:56:21
'one of the most deadly places in the world to be a girl.' | 0:56:21 | 0:56:24
Subtitles by Ericsson | 0:56:33 | 0:56:36 |
