In Britain today, young women like me take our basic rights for granted. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
But for millions of girls around the world just being female | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
can put their lives at risk. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
In this series, I'm going to investigate | 0:00:15 | 0:00:17
some of the toughest places in the world to be a girl. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:20
In the Philippines, I investigate the latest trend | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
in the global sex trade - cyber dens. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
But tonight I'm travelling to Honduras, | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
the country with the world's highest murder rate for women. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
He took his gun and shot Maria Jose 12 times. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
'I'll meet women who've been brutally attacked.' | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
TRANSLATION FROM SPANISH: | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
I'm in total disbelief. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
-What's your name? -Stacey. -Beautiful name. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
'I'll confront some of the men responsible.' | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
Tell me why you're inside. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
-For rape? -Yes. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
'And I'll hit the road with young women...' | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
Stand up for what you believe in. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
'..who are fighting back...' | 0:00:59 | 0:01:00
This is all criminalised. | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
'..as I try to uncover why this country | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
'has become so dangerous for young women.' | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
The idea that so many of these crimes | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
just go unpunished is astonishing. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
Tonight, I'm travelling to Honduras in Central America, | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
a small country south of Mexico. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
Honduras recently hit the headlines | 0:01:31 | 0:01:32
for having the highest homicide rate in the world. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:36
If Britain had the same level of murders as Honduras | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
there would be 50,000 killings a year. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
I've arrived in the country's second-biggest city, San Pedro Sula - | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
but when it comes to murder, it's the capital. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
This is my first morning here in San Pedro Sula, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
and I've picked up a couple of the local papers | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
just to have a nose, see what they're saying. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
This paper, right, has got six pages - | 0:02:03 | 0:02:06
four dead here, two killed here... | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
one killed here. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:12
All these murders have happened in the last 24 hours. | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
It's mind-blowing. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
And it's worth bearing in mind | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
that the headline, the front page on one of these papers, | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
is a demonstration saying, "We have had enough, stop killing our women, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
"stop making it so we're finding our females in these rubbish bags." | 0:02:27 | 0:02:32
Violence against women in Honduras is so common | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
these crimes even have their own name - femicide. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
I want to get a taste of what life's really like here, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
so I'm starting my journey at the local hospital. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
Hola. Buenas tardes. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
-Mucho gusto. Stacey. -Carlos. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
'Carlos is a med student who works in the hospital's A & E.' | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
'The first thing I notice is the heavy military presence.' | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
We were having some problems with security - | 0:03:09 | 0:03:12
people who got shot, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
they were criminals. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
So it's as much security for them | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
as for us, and other patients. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
'This time last year the hospital was overrun by gangs.' | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
So, on a typical Friday night, it's busy, I guess? | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
Yeah. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:38 | |
And with Friday night hotting up, | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
the ambulances start to roll in. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
The guys have just wheeled off a lad who's been stabbed multiple times. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
There's blood all over the stretcher. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:55
Last year there were 6,000 murders in Honduras. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
So, Carlos, what kind of a wound would that be? | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
He had a bullet wound | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
that went through his arm and chest. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
-His arm and chest? -Yes. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:11
It goes right through. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
After several hours, only a few women have been admitted, | 0:04:14 | 0:04:17
but this is far from the norm. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:19
We see young girls | 0:04:20 | 0:04:22
who are wounded by gunshot. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:25
From 9 to, like, 14, 16, or 17. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:30
-Nine?! -Wounded. Yes, wounded. | 0:04:30 | 0:04:32
But now you are seeing more and more young girls, | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
more and more women coming through? | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
Sadly it's becoming more and more frequent. | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
In the last decade, | 0:04:43 | 0:04:44
the number of murdered women here has nearly trebled. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
Last year 1,100 were killed or disappeared. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
Murder is the leading cause of death amongst young women. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:58
I'm still left with the question | 0:05:08 | 0:05:10
as to why it's so dangerous to be a female here. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:12
So, with that said, I've arranged to go and spend some time | 0:05:12 | 0:05:15
with a mother who has lost two daughters. | 0:05:15 | 0:05:17
And this is the most infamous case in the country - | 0:05:17 | 0:05:21
the murders were incredibly violent. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:22
I'm travelling east to a town called Santa Barbara. | 0:05:25 | 0:05:28
It's known for its beautiful women, | 0:05:32 | 0:05:34
of which the most famous was Miss Honduras. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:36
Maria Jose Alvarado! | 0:05:38 | 0:05:39
'Last year, at only 19, | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
'Maria Jose Alvarado was crowned Miss Honduras | 0:05:43 | 0:05:46
'and became the country's sweetheart.' | 0:05:46 | 0:05:49
Just seven months later, | 0:05:51 | 0:05:53
Maria Jose and her sister Sofia were brutally murdered. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:57
Today I'm meeting their mum, Teresa. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
Sofia. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:10
La otra es Maria Jose. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
And these are her crowns and trophies, are they? | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
TRANSLATION FROM SPANISH: | 0:06:15 | 0:06:19
Maria Jose was days away from leaving for London | 0:06:30 | 0:06:33
to compete in Miss World... | 0:06:33 | 0:06:35
..when she decided to join her sister Sofia at her boyfriend's party. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:42
An hour after arriving, | 0:06:55 | 0:06:57
Plutarco killed both girls in cold blood. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
Have you any idea why... | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
why he killed both your daughters? | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
What drove Plutarco | 0:07:30 | 0:07:31
to kill the most beautiful woman in Honduras, | 0:07:31 | 0:07:34
and her sister? | 0:07:34 | 0:07:35
So I've asked if I can speak to the detective | 0:07:42 | 0:07:45
that was looking after the girls' case. | 0:07:45 | 0:07:47
I just want to find out more information, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
I want to know where they were killed, | 0:07:49 | 0:07:50
where their bodies were found. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
At the minute I feel like there's all these questions | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
but not very many answers. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
-Buenos dias. -Hola. | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
-Como estas? -Muy bien. -Gracias. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
Today, it's possible for me to spend some time with you? | 0:08:01 | 0:08:06
'Detective Reyes was in charge of the initial investigation.' | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
I was wondering if I could see where the girls were murdered? | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
-At this moment we are waiting the patrol police. -OK. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:17
We need patrol police, police to go to the place. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:21
OK, so, Vicente, this is our security, | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
and we're travelling in this car. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
-That's right. -Claro. Gracias. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
The Miss Honduras case, | 0:08:36 | 0:08:38
has that been the only femicide case here? | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
So many murders, mostly women. | 0:08:40 | 0:08:42
In this moment, we are in the investigation | 0:08:43 | 0:08:47
of a man who murdered 15 women. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:51
15 women? | 0:08:51 | 0:08:53
-15 women. -One man murdered 15 women? | 0:08:53 | 0:08:57
-Uh-huh. -That's horrific. | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
We arrive at the spa where the party was held. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
So, this is the place. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:11
This is the crime scene. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:14
-Where exactly? Can you take me to the exact spot? Can we go? -This way. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
This is the place where the Alvarado sisters were murdered. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:28
'Maria Jose saw Sofia and Plutarco arguing and stepped in.' | 0:09:30 | 0:09:36
Sofia was dancing with another man. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
Then...her boyfriend... | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
-Yeah. -..feel a... | 0:09:42 | 0:09:45
rage of... | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
-Jealous. -Jealous rage. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
And he approach her, he took his gun | 0:09:50 | 0:09:54
and shot Sofia several times. | 0:09:54 | 0:09:57
After, he reloaded his gun | 0:09:57 | 0:10:01
and shot again to Maria Jose 12 times. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:05
It's unbelievable. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
Incredible. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:15
In Honduras, it's common. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:20
And while all of this is going on, | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
there are other people at the party? | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
I think there are... | 0:10:26 | 0:10:28
30... | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31 | |
30 persons. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:32
None of the guests dared go to the police. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:36
Some of the men even helped Plutarco bury the bodies. | 0:10:36 | 0:10:40
This man who killed the two girls | 0:10:42 | 0:10:46
must have serious power | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
to be so scary for so many people? | 0:10:49 | 0:10:53
The bodies were found a week later and Plutarco was arrested. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:02
Local papers claim he's a major drug dealer with powerful connection. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:07
So, despite killing two women in front of many witnesses, | 0:11:09 | 0:11:12
there are fears he could walk free. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
Miss Honduras is one of just five models killed in recent months. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:37
I want to know what it's like to work as a model under these conditions, | 0:11:39 | 0:11:44
so I've arranged to meet some at a video shoot | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
for local hip-hop stars Phoenix and Falcon. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:50
-He say if you want to model for the video? -Me? | 0:11:53 | 0:11:56
-Yeah. -Do I want to model for the video? | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
Erm... My bikini is in London. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:03
'I catch up with the crew during a costume change.' | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
Whoo! You look wicked. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
Happy? | 0:12:12 | 0:12:14
Como estas? Hola. | 0:12:18 | 0:12:21
I know there have been lots of situations very recently | 0:12:21 | 0:12:25
where models have been targeted specifically, | 0:12:25 | 0:12:28
is that not a bit scary? | 0:12:28 | 0:12:30
TRANSLATION FROM SPANISH: | 0:12:30 | 0:12:32
Why? | 0:12:32 | 0:12:33 | |
Do you reckon it's dangerous to be a beautiful woman here? | 0:12:46 | 0:12:49
TRANSLATION FROM SPANISH: | 0:12:49 | 0:12:53
'In Honduras, 4.5 million people - | 0:13:04 | 0:13:07
'almost two thirds of the population - live in poverty. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
'And many wannabe models | 0:13:10 | 0:13:11
'come from the roughest, poorest neighbourhoods in the city.' | 0:13:11 | 0:13:15
'For many girls like Berenice, | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22
'modelling is one of the few ways to escape poverty, if not violence.' | 0:13:22 | 0:13:26
When you say they're not here any more, they're dead? | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
The majority of women murdered here are under 24 | 0:13:43 | 0:13:47
and come from poor urban areas. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:49
These neighbourhoods are controlled | 0:13:51 | 0:13:53
by violent street gangs and drug dealers. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:56
Men who increasingly recruit women to do their dirty work for them. | 0:13:58 | 0:14:02
I've been desperate to get into one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods | 0:14:08 | 0:14:11
that everyone's talking about. They're often referred to as barrios. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:15
But it's proved impossible to get in there without serious protection, | 0:14:15 | 0:14:18
so the military police are going there this afternoon | 0:14:18 | 0:14:20
and they've agreed that we can tag along, so we're en route now. | 0:14:20 | 0:14:23
The military police are a new force here, specially set to tackle gangs. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:30
They target the neighbourhoods with the bloodiest turf wars. | 0:14:32 | 0:14:35
'And I catch up with them at a checkpoint.' | 0:14:38 | 0:14:41
-Como estas? -Muy bien. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:44
Captain Varela Palma is in charge. | 0:14:44 | 0:14:47
Senor, please may you talk me through this checkpoint? | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
Why is it here, what does it do? | 0:14:50 | 0:14:51
TRANSLATION FROM SPANISH: | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
But while the police search the young men, | 0:15:02 | 0:15:04
I notice the women slip through unchecked. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:06
This is only the barrio outskirts. | 0:15:12 | 0:15:15
We still need to travel into the heart of the ganglands. | 0:15:17 | 0:15:20
Last year there were 209 murders in this district alone. | 0:15:25 | 0:15:29
It's hard to describe the atmosphere because, sometimes, | 0:15:38 | 0:15:41
when you're with people like the military police, | 0:15:41 | 0:15:43
there's almost this false sense of security. | 0:15:43 | 0:15:45
It's worth remembering that, you know, | 0:15:48 | 0:15:50
this is often referred to as the most dangerous city on earth. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:54
'In violent neighbourhoods like these, | 0:15:56 | 0:15:58
'I want to know how gangs are using women.' | 0:15:58 | 0:16:00
'Today, I've brought a translator with me.' | 0:16:03 | 0:16:05
So, Captain, you said that the gangs were fighting over territory, | 0:16:05 | 0:16:09
how does that affect the young women that live in these areas? | 0:16:09 | 0:16:13
Right now there is a lot of women involved in the gangs | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
and working with the gangs. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:26
And they use them because, in the checkpoint, | 0:16:26 | 0:16:32
or places like that, | 0:16:32 | 0:16:34
they don't search the women the same way they search the guys. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:38
So perhaps the gangs target vulnerable girls? | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
It's easy to see how vulnerable young women can be recruited. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:58
But what happens to them next? | 0:16:58 | 0:17:00
Unbelievably, I've managed to secure a chat | 0:17:00 | 0:17:03
with a girl from one of the most notorious gangs here. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
We have to be in a neutral location, | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
she's had to ask her boss if she can take part in this conversation. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:12
He's given her permission. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:14
So I've no idea what to expect. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
Juanita has come with two armed gang members who wait outside. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:24
She's in disguise - if she's recognised, she'll be killed. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:28
You always feel slightly apprehensive... | 0:17:28 | 0:17:32
when you're involved in these kinds of conversations, | 0:17:32 | 0:17:36
but I think we are cool. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:38
'Juanita was abandoned when her parents ran away to America. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:42
'In order to survive, the gang became her new family.' | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
So you and I are exactly the same age. | 0:17:46 | 0:17:49
-Yeah. -Very different lives. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:52
'Young girls are lured into the gang with the promise of easy money.' | 0:17:52 | 0:17:56
When you first start out, they're going to treat you well, | 0:17:56 | 0:17:59
and then they start giving you work | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
and sending you places. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:04
And, yeah, eventually you have to sleep with people. | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
Many are chosen for their looks and are used for sex. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:12
Truth - I only slept with four, no more. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:15
But this other girl, she slept with ten, | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
and that was pretty much for nothing. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
They still ended up killing her. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:22
'Juanita's boss chose her as his gang wife.' | 0:18:22 | 0:18:26
Do you love him? | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
Mmm... | 0:18:30 | 0:18:31
No. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:32 | |
Truthfully, never. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
I've never been in love with him. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:36
Anyway, he has his wife and his kids. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:40
One only lives with him because, you know, he's in the gang. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:43
'Now she's forced to work as a honey trap,' | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
'targeting enemy gang members.' | 0:18:46 | 0:18:49
Once the guy's into you, you know, you set up a date | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
and then the boss and the rest of the gang, they show up. | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
And when it's time to kill, you're also involved. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:59
How many people do you think, in all honesty, | 0:19:01 | 0:19:03
you've killed over the years? | 0:19:03 | 0:19:06
Well, since I began, | 0:19:06 | 0:19:08
I must have, like, killed, | 0:19:08 | 0:19:11
but mostly women... | 0:19:11 | 0:19:13
only about, you know, 42, like. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:17
To put it bluntly, | 0:19:17 | 0:19:19
you have been responsible for murdering... | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
many women who are as vulnerable as you once were. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:29
Are you not riddled with guilt? | 0:19:29 | 0:19:31
Yeah, sure. You feel bad. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:33
You go to the house at dawn when everyone's asleep | 0:19:33 | 0:19:36
and the worst part is when they scream, you know? | 0:19:36 | 0:19:39
"Don't kill the kids." | 0:19:39 | 0:19:40
As we say, everyone's to the slaughter. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:45
Every day you were deciding | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
who gets to live and who should die. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:50
How do you live with that? | 0:19:50 | 0:19:52
There's nothing to do. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:54
Work's work. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:56
You have to do what they say, otherwise YOU die. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:59
You have such mixed emotions | 0:20:06 | 0:20:08
having a conversation with someone like that. You know, | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
on the one hand, you are completely repulsed... | 0:20:11 | 0:20:15
and you cannot believe the amount of lives she has taken. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:20
But on the other hand, you almost pity her. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:24
She was so young and so vulnerable and so impressionable | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28
when she joined that gang. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:30
But that's it now, that's her life, there is no way out for her. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:34
She has to deal with the constant killings | 0:20:34 | 0:20:37
and the constant death forever. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:39
Juanita's fate is totally in the hands of the men who control her. | 0:20:42 | 0:20:47
But it's not just the girls who join gangs who are under attack. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:51
I've come to Danli Prison in the south of the country. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
I want to hear from the prisoners themselves why they raped | 0:21:00 | 0:21:04
and killed women. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:06
I understand this machoism exists, | 0:21:09 | 0:21:11
but I don't fully understand how these | 0:21:11 | 0:21:13
guys can justify it to themselves in their own minds. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
So I've come to this prison - there are over 600 men here - | 0:21:16 | 0:21:20
to try and get some answers. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
98% of this prison's population is male. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:28
And testosterone levels are high. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:31
-What is your name? -Stacey. -Stacey. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
-Beautiful name. -Thank you. Thank you. -Do you have a boyfriend? | 0:21:34 | 0:21:38
Yeah. Boyfriend in England. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
And tell me why you're inside. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:44
-For rape? -Yes. | 0:21:44 | 0:21:46
-Did you rape her? -No, no. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:49
She is just lying? | 0:21:49 | 0:21:50
'I'm told that there are over 80 men jailed for violence | 0:21:54 | 0:21:57
'against women here.' | 0:21:57 | 0:21:59
Gracias. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:00
Oh, is that for me? Gracias. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:08
Oh, I'm OK, thank you. Muchas gracias. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
So, are any of you guys in here for killing a woman? | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
'Guilty or not, I still want to get some straight answers.' | 0:22:28 | 0:22:32
Tell me why you think some men are so violent towards women | 0:22:32 | 0:22:36
here in Honduras? | 0:22:36 | 0:22:37
So your woman going to another man, having an affair, | 0:22:42 | 0:22:46
having sex with someone else, that's reason enough to kill her? | 0:22:46 | 0:22:49
That is nonsense, though. That doesn't make any sense. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:08
If you love someone... | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
..you know, you don't punish them, | 0:23:12 | 0:23:14
you don't hurt them, you don't murder them. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:16
Wow. Remind me never to date a jealous Honduran man. | 0:23:23 | 0:23:28
THEY LAUGH | 0:23:28 | 0:23:29
As I spend more time here, I realise it's not just gang members | 0:23:31 | 0:23:35
and drug dealers who are violent to women. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:37
Homer is serving a 30-year sentence. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:46
He was jailed two years ago for brutally murdering his wife. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:50
-Hola. -Buenas tardes. -Buenas tardes. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:53
Como estas? HE SPEAKS SPANISH | 0:23:53 | 0:23:55
Nice to meet you. I'm Stacey. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:58
And can you explain to me a bit more about what happened | 0:23:58 | 0:24:02
when you killed your wife? | 0:24:02 | 0:24:03
'Homer attacked his wife after an argument. | 0:24:09 | 0:24:12
'He demanded that she stay home and cook and clean for him.' | 0:24:12 | 0:24:16
Do you believe that jealousy and passion, as you describe it, | 0:24:23 | 0:24:29
justifies murdering a woman here? | 0:24:29 | 0:24:32
'Homer slashed his wife's throat, and she bled to death.' | 0:24:55 | 0:24:59
And you make it sound like it is her fault she is now dead. | 0:25:01 | 0:25:04
Do you take any responsibility for killing her? | 0:25:04 | 0:25:07
Of course I find it hugely frustrating. | 0:25:20 | 0:25:22
I am a woman, so I'm sat in front of this man | 0:25:22 | 0:25:25
and he is essentially saying that she brought it on herself. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:29
She deserved... | 0:25:29 | 0:25:32
to be murdered because she didn't behave in the way | 0:25:32 | 0:25:35
he expected her to, and she had the audacity to want to go to work, | 0:25:35 | 0:25:39
when he could have just provided for her. | 0:25:39 | 0:25:42
She should have been grateful for that. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:44
And, unfortunately, that mentality, them egos, | 0:25:45 | 0:25:50
that's how so many men think here. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:52
And some of the women have been forced to sort of accept that, | 0:25:54 | 0:26:00
which is even more depressing. | 0:26:00 | 0:26:02
This macho culture means many men | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
think violence against women is acceptable. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:10
I want to know how many are getting away with it. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:16
Mi amiga. Heydi. I'm Stacey. Nice to meet you. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:25
'Heydi has just left hospital... | 0:26:25 | 0:26:27
'after being horrifically attacked by her husband.' | 0:26:27 | 0:26:31
This was just over a month ago. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:34
Are you at a stage where you're healing a little bit now? Can I see? | 0:26:34 | 0:26:38
SHE SPEAKS SPANISH | 0:26:38 | 0:26:39
'Heydi's husband attacked her with a machete.' | 0:26:41 | 0:26:45
Gracias. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:48
So are you still in pain? You're still sore? | 0:26:50 | 0:26:53
Can you talk me through the night that... | 0:27:01 | 0:27:04
..he attacked you? | 0:27:05 | 0:27:07
Heydi's two young daughters watched while her husband swung the machete. | 0:27:40 | 0:27:44
Heydi is lucky to be alive, but her ordeal is not over yet. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:54
Too poor to afford a lawyer, today Heydi is meeting a women's | 0:28:03 | 0:28:07
rights organisation, who are the only ones who can help. | 0:28:07 | 0:28:11
She wants her husband to face the maximum penalty, | 0:28:13 | 0:28:16
40 years behind bars, for femicide. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:20
So, can I ask you, ladies, | 0:28:20 | 0:28:24
Heydi's story, Heydi's situation, | 0:28:24 | 0:28:27
is this something that you are used to hearing? | 0:28:27 | 0:28:30
And what do you suggest Heydi does now? | 0:28:30 | 0:28:33
'This means he could be out in less than two years.' | 0:28:45 | 0:28:50
I am in total disbelief that they would even entertain | 0:28:50 | 0:28:55
the idea that this could be GBH. | 0:28:55 | 0:28:58
'Fewer than 3% of domestic violence cases are ever resolved here, | 0:29:09 | 0:29:14
'so he could be out even sooner.' | 0:29:14 | 0:29:17
If this man does get out earlier, and he comes back, | 0:29:17 | 0:29:22
or he makes more threats, are you in a position to be able to help her? | 0:29:22 | 0:29:26
For me, the specifics that make me | 0:29:39 | 0:29:43
feel most angry... | 0:29:43 | 0:29:45
are the levels of violence, the brutality | 0:29:45 | 0:29:50
of the crimes here, but also the idea that so many of these crimes | 0:29:50 | 0:29:55
just go unpunished. It is astonishing. | 0:29:55 | 0:29:58
95 to 97% of cases against women | 0:29:58 | 0:30:03
won't end with a conviction. | 0:30:03 | 0:30:05
I mean, that is just...you know, the officials, the authoritative figures | 0:30:05 | 0:30:10
giving these guys the thumbs up. | 0:30:10 | 0:30:12
You kick on, you do what you like because, realistically, | 0:30:12 | 0:30:15
the chances of you spending any time inside are very, very slight. | 0:30:15 | 0:30:19
In a country where it's so easy to get away with murder, | 0:30:24 | 0:30:27
where can women go when their lives are in danger? | 0:30:27 | 0:30:30
I've tracked down one of only three refuges for women | 0:30:33 | 0:30:36
in the whole country. | 0:30:36 | 0:30:38
So, I'm on my way to go and spend some time | 0:30:39 | 0:30:42
at the only women's refuge in this city. | 0:30:42 | 0:30:44
You can see for yourself how high the security needs to be, | 0:30:44 | 0:30:47
it's covered in barbed wire, they have armed security. | 0:30:47 | 0:30:50
I know there was an incident last year, | 0:30:50 | 0:30:52
so I'm keen to see how they are now getting on. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:54
'This refuge has been running for over 19 years | 0:31:02 | 0:31:05
'and has housed over 4,000 women and their children.' | 0:31:05 | 0:31:09
So, Ana Cruz, you are the boss around here? | 0:31:11 | 0:31:13
SHE TRANSLATES THE QUESTION | 0:31:13 | 0:31:15
Si. | 0:31:15 | 0:31:17 | |
Is it possible for me to have a look at some of the rooms? | 0:31:26 | 0:31:29
WOMAN SPEAKS SPANISH Gracias. | 0:31:29 | 0:31:31
'Last year, the authorities forced the refuge | 0:31:34 | 0:31:36
'to take in a woman wanted by the gangs. | 0:31:36 | 0:31:40
'Knowing the risks, Ana Cruz objected, but to no avail. | 0:31:40 | 0:31:44
'And just days later, armed men stormed the building.' | 0:31:45 | 0:31:49
They wrap her, you know, in a quilt and they took her | 0:31:52 | 0:31:56
and they were with weapons, you know, with the ski masks. | 0:31:56 | 0:31:59
They...kidnapped her and they took her with them. | 0:31:59 | 0:32:03
'Both the woman and her two-year-old baby were thrown into a car.' | 0:32:03 | 0:32:07
The lady that was taken by the masked men, | 0:32:07 | 0:32:12
she left us a message right here. | 0:32:12 | 0:32:15
So, she had just enough time to... | 0:32:22 | 0:32:25
leave you that message before they took her. | 0:32:25 | 0:32:27
'They were never heard from again.' | 0:32:30 | 0:32:32
We don't know if they were sent by the district attorney | 0:32:32 | 0:32:36
or they were hit men or... We don't know. | 0:32:36 | 0:32:39
It sounds like it can't be real. You know what I mean? It's staggering. | 0:32:39 | 0:32:44
Welcome to Honduras! That's how we live, here in Honduras. | 0:32:44 | 0:32:49
Terrified by the attack, all the other women fled. | 0:32:51 | 0:32:55
Almost a year later, the refuge remains shut. | 0:32:57 | 0:33:02
What can you do when you haven't got support from the government... | 0:33:02 | 0:33:05
-From anybody. -..authoritative figures? | 0:33:05 | 0:33:07
This trip is going to send me loopy. | 0:33:23 | 0:33:25
I've got nothing but admiration for these women | 0:33:25 | 0:33:29
because every single morning you wake up and you think, "Here we go again." | 0:33:29 | 0:33:34
You know what I mean? "I wonder if I'll survive today. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:38
"I wonder if someone will shoot me, if I'll get raped. | 0:33:38 | 0:33:40
"I wonder if I'll get kidnapped." | 0:33:40 | 0:33:42
With so many women under attack, are any fighting back? | 0:33:45 | 0:33:50
It's 3am and I'm going to go and meet | 0:33:52 | 0:33:54
a group of girls who are really courageous women, actually. | 0:33:54 | 0:33:57
They are willing to break the law to try and get their voices heard | 0:33:57 | 0:34:00
and actually I have learned very quickly that that is a big deal here. | 0:34:00 | 0:34:03
You don't want to upset anyone in Honduras. | 0:34:03 | 0:34:06
We've agreed to meet at a petrol station in the centre of town. | 0:34:08 | 0:34:12
Because of the risks involved, the girls are in disguise. | 0:34:13 | 0:34:17
Hello. Hola. Como estas? Nice to meet you all. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:22
You look amazing. I love your mask! | 0:34:22 | 0:34:24
Oh, bonita! | 0:34:24 | 0:34:27
So, girls, explain to me tonight what the plan is, | 0:34:27 | 0:34:29
what are you hoping to do? | 0:34:29 | 0:34:30
Tonight we are trying to put some posters up. | 0:34:30 | 0:34:35
We want to talk about the issues like birth control, | 0:34:35 | 0:34:39
abortion and the right to be, just be women and be happy. | 0:34:39 | 0:34:44
Oh, my gosh! It is so refreshing to hear somebody speak so openly, | 0:34:44 | 0:34:52
you know, about these issues that really do matter. | 0:34:52 | 0:34:55
I could not agree with you any more, | 0:34:55 | 0:34:57
but here in Honduras it is difficult to say these things. | 0:34:57 | 0:35:00
This is all criminalised. | 0:35:00 | 0:35:02
To stand up for what you believe and talk about it | 0:35:02 | 0:35:05
is like the worst thing that you can do. | 0:35:05 | 0:35:09
'The government recently imposed | 0:35:09 | 0:35:11
'the strictest ban on emergency contraception in the world. | 0:35:11 | 0:35:14
'These girls are fighting back.' | 0:35:14 | 0:35:16
Are you not frightened? | 0:35:16 | 0:35:17
I try not to think about it, or else I wouldn't be doing it. | 0:35:17 | 0:35:21
Just another night in Honduras! Rattling round. | 0:35:29 | 0:35:33
Following a group of really awesome women. | 0:35:34 | 0:35:37
So, we've had to stay a little bit further behind. | 0:35:44 | 0:35:47
They are concerned that if they're seen entertaining a film crew, | 0:35:47 | 0:35:51
the repercussions for them could be much worse. | 0:35:51 | 0:35:55
It has to be done really, really quickly | 0:36:00 | 0:36:02
because the minute someone sees you, you've got to vanish. | 0:36:02 | 0:36:07
The girls are replacing posters that have been defaced. | 0:36:09 | 0:36:13
And with over 20 posters to stick up, | 0:36:23 | 0:36:27
it doesn't take long before someone spots them | 0:36:27 | 0:36:30
and phone calls are made. | 0:36:30 | 0:36:32
There is a car behind us. We need to go. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:40
And the girls have spotted it too. | 0:36:40 | 0:36:43
WOMAN SPEAKS SPANISH | 0:36:43 | 0:36:44
We've got to cut this short. | 0:36:46 | 0:36:48
There's a car behind us, there's a car in front of us. | 0:36:48 | 0:36:50
The security guards have just come out, | 0:36:50 | 0:36:51
they're reaching for their guns and we've got to go. | 0:36:51 | 0:36:54
THEY CHEER AND CLAP | 0:37:04 | 0:37:06
I mean, these posters simply say, | 0:37:10 | 0:37:12
"We should have the right to choose what we do with our own body," | 0:37:12 | 0:37:16
and I don't know how any reasonable, sane person... | 0:37:16 | 0:37:20
..can have any issues with that. | 0:37:22 | 0:37:25
In Honduras, the conservative and Catholic government | 0:37:29 | 0:37:32
is rolling back women's rights. | 0:37:32 | 0:37:35
It has cut sex education in schools. | 0:37:35 | 0:37:38
Both abortion and the morning after pill have been made illegal. | 0:37:38 | 0:37:42
Today I'm going to the local hospital's maternity ward | 0:37:45 | 0:37:49
to see the consequences for myself. | 0:37:49 | 0:37:51
Sofia has come in for a checkup with her mum. | 0:37:58 | 0:38:01
She was raped when she was only 15. | 0:38:01 | 0:38:04
So, tell me how you're feeling. Nervous? Excited? | 0:38:06 | 0:38:09
A little bit. What are you feeling most? | 0:38:11 | 0:38:14
'Sofia was baby-sitting to help her mum with bills | 0:38:26 | 0:38:29
'when she was raped by a family friend. | 0:38:29 | 0:38:31
'She kept it a secret for five months.' | 0:38:33 | 0:38:36
So, essentially, you've been forced into complete silence? | 0:38:48 | 0:38:52
'Graduating was Sofia's best hope for a good job, | 0:39:08 | 0:39:11
'but forced to have the baby, she's had to drop out of school.' | 0:39:11 | 0:39:15
Do you know what you're having? Nino? Nina? | 0:39:15 | 0:39:17
What would you like? | 0:39:17 | 0:39:19
But Sofia is not alone. | 0:39:29 | 0:39:31
Rape happens more frequently than murder here | 0:39:32 | 0:39:35
and the majority of victims are under 14. | 0:39:35 | 0:39:38
I'm keen to find out what options the hospital offers to these girls. | 0:39:40 | 0:39:44
Dr Gomez is in charge of the teen pregnancy clinic. | 0:39:46 | 0:39:50
So, if a young girl finds herself pregnant through no fault of her own, | 0:40:01 | 0:40:06
she has been raped, what are her choices here? | 0:40:06 | 0:40:08
The government is saying to all of these young girls, | 0:40:20 | 0:40:23
"If you are raped and you fall pregnant, | 0:40:23 | 0:40:27
"you have absolutely no choice whatsoever, | 0:40:27 | 0:40:30
"you have to continue with the pregnancy | 0:40:30 | 0:40:32
"and you have to live with that for the rest of your life." | 0:40:32 | 0:40:36
It just seems so unfair, you know? | 0:40:37 | 0:40:39
If a woman has been raped, I think she should choose | 0:40:50 | 0:40:52
whether or not she wants to continue with that pregnancy | 0:40:52 | 0:40:56
and the girls here, they just have no choice whatsoever. | 0:40:56 | 0:41:00
In fact, not only is it illegal, it has now been criminalised, | 0:41:00 | 0:41:03
so if she did take the pill, | 0:41:03 | 0:41:04
if she did go to a backstreet alley for an abortion, | 0:41:04 | 0:41:06
she would go to prison for up to six years. | 0:41:06 | 0:41:09
And statistically, the perpetrator, the guy who raped her | 0:41:09 | 0:41:13
and put her in this position, would walk scot-free. | 0:41:13 | 0:41:16
I'm unexpectedly invited to the labour ward. | 0:41:19 | 0:41:22
I tell you, this morning I had absolutely no idea | 0:41:22 | 0:41:27
that I'd be going into the delivery room. | 0:41:27 | 0:41:31
Didn't have a clue. | 0:41:31 | 0:41:34
I'm a little bit nervous. I don't know why. | 0:41:36 | 0:41:41
-You OK? -Yes. | 0:41:41 | 0:41:42
Of course you are! | 0:41:42 | 0:41:44
'Since the morning after pill was made illegal in 2009, | 0:41:44 | 0:41:47
'the number of teens giving birth in this hospital has more than trebled.' | 0:41:47 | 0:41:51
Hola. Como estas? | 0:41:51 | 0:41:54
'Sylvia is the youngest girl on the ward today. She is only 13.' | 0:41:54 | 0:41:59
I can sit with you for a moment? Si? | 0:41:59 | 0:42:03
And are you at the hospital alone, are your family here? | 0:42:03 | 0:42:06
Is the father around? | 0:42:11 | 0:42:13
She moved in with her boyfriend when she was 11. | 0:42:18 | 0:42:21
And what age is your boyfriend? | 0:42:21 | 0:42:23
OK. | 0:42:24 | 0:42:26 | |
Sylvia is just one of 50,000 teenage mums giving birth each year. | 0:42:28 | 0:42:33
There are so many girls here today, | 0:42:33 | 0:42:35
they are forced to give birth side-by-side. | 0:42:35 | 0:42:38
Two of them are only 16. | 0:42:38 | 0:42:41
They are both coming at the same time with their babies?! | 0:42:41 | 0:42:44
Sylvia has been rushed to surgery. | 0:42:51 | 0:42:53
So, as you can see, | 0:42:55 | 0:42:57
all the surgeons are just prepping her now for theatre. | 0:42:57 | 0:43:02
They are going to try and get this Caesarean done | 0:43:02 | 0:43:04
as quickly as possible. | 0:43:04 | 0:43:05
Sylvia is clearly petrified. | 0:43:08 | 0:43:10
It's easy to forget that, at only 13, she is only a child. | 0:43:12 | 0:43:16
For girls this young, it's often too dangerous to give birth naturally. | 0:43:20 | 0:43:24
So Sylvia's baby must be delivered by Caesarean... | 0:43:26 | 0:43:29
BABY CRIES | 0:43:29 | 0:43:31
..and two months prematurely. | 0:43:34 | 0:43:36
It's a nina. Perfecto. | 0:43:42 | 0:43:44
Bueno. | 0:43:47 | 0:43:48
To be honest with you, I've never... | 0:43:54 | 0:43:57
experienced such a momentous day. | 0:43:57 | 0:44:02
You know, the idea of doing that, for me, | 0:44:02 | 0:44:04
frightens the life out of me and I'm 28 and I'd have my support network. | 0:44:04 | 0:44:08
She's just been such a trooper and you can't help but think, | 0:44:08 | 0:44:13
you know, the two of them have battled it out today, | 0:44:13 | 0:44:16
but realistically, Honduras is a tough place to be a female | 0:44:16 | 0:44:21
and it's going to be a struggle for the pair of them, of course it is. | 0:44:21 | 0:44:25
You hope and you pray that it goes the other way, but... | 0:44:27 | 0:44:31
statistically... | 0:44:31 | 0:44:35
the chances are, it's going to be a tough slog. | 0:44:35 | 0:44:38
It's easy to see how girls like Sylvia | 0:44:42 | 0:44:44
can get caught in a vicious cycle, | 0:44:44 | 0:44:46
becoming mothers so young and dependent on men. | 0:44:46 | 0:44:50
When the odds are so stacked against them, | 0:44:51 | 0:44:53
is there any way out for young women like these? | 0:44:53 | 0:44:56
I'm about to meet someone who I hope can tell me more. | 0:44:58 | 0:45:01
We can't be seen together, | 0:45:02 | 0:45:04
so we are meeting behind closed doors in a photography studio. | 0:45:04 | 0:45:08
-Hola. -Hola. -Como estas? | 0:45:08 | 0:45:09
-Muy bien. -Si? | 0:45:09 | 0:45:11
Ana Maria's life is under threat. | 0:45:13 | 0:45:15
She has a plan, but for it to work, she needs an ID | 0:45:15 | 0:45:18
and for that, a photo. | 0:45:18 | 0:45:21
Three months ago, her life changed for ever | 0:45:24 | 0:45:27
when a young man burst into her house. | 0:45:27 | 0:45:30
And just because you saw what happened, your life is now in danger? | 0:45:43 | 0:45:48
What's your plan now? What are you going to do? | 0:46:01 | 0:46:04
Her sister fled two years ago | 0:46:13 | 0:46:14
when she was targeted to become a gang wife. | 0:46:14 | 0:46:17
-Happy? -Si. | 0:46:25 | 0:46:27
'We decide to meet up again, | 0:46:27 | 0:46:29
'when Ana Maria will make a run for the border.' | 0:46:29 | 0:46:32
Perfecto. | 0:46:32 | 0:46:33
-Bonita! -Gracias. | 0:46:33 | 0:46:36
Your ticket, eh? To hopefully get out of here. | 0:46:36 | 0:46:39
For many girls like Ana Maria, their only option is to leave the country. | 0:46:41 | 0:46:45
On the way back to the hotel, | 0:46:48 | 0:46:50
I spot a van making a drop-off at the morgue. | 0:46:50 | 0:46:53
It's another brutal murder. | 0:46:59 | 0:47:00
This is the 865th body they've had here in four months. | 0:47:03 | 0:47:09
TEARFULLY: It starts to become just numbers. | 0:47:17 | 0:47:20
Then when you see the bodies, you know, that is someone's mum, | 0:47:21 | 0:47:26
that is someone's sister, that is someone's baby. | 0:47:26 | 0:47:28
I find it... | 0:47:31 | 0:47:33
..impossible to understand, | 0:47:35 | 0:47:38
how they can continue to live like this. | 0:47:38 | 0:47:41
Cos I'm only here a short time and I'm...I'm struggling. | 0:47:42 | 0:47:46
Shocked by the levels of violence and death that women face here every day, | 0:48:01 | 0:48:05
I want to know why the government isn't doing more to protect them. | 0:48:05 | 0:48:09
I've been promised an interview at the general attorney's office. | 0:48:11 | 0:48:16
They are responsible for making sure that justice is served. | 0:48:16 | 0:48:19
But when I get there, | 0:48:19 | 0:48:21
the man they put forward doesn't want to play ball. | 0:48:21 | 0:48:24
We have filmed so many women here in Honduras | 0:48:24 | 0:48:27
and we've heard so many things, | 0:48:27 | 0:48:28
so we are giving you the right to reply. | 0:48:28 | 0:48:31
I would hate to come here, just speak to women, | 0:48:32 | 0:48:34
not give you the opportunity to give your point of view | 0:48:34 | 0:48:37
and then me leave for England tomorrow. | 0:48:37 | 0:48:40
OK, so just so I'm completely clear, | 0:48:48 | 0:48:52
we wrote formally to the district attorney's office, | 0:48:52 | 0:48:56
asking for an interview. | 0:48:56 | 0:48:58
They accepted, we came, we came to the place that they told us to, | 0:48:58 | 0:49:02
we came at the time they told us to, | 0:49:02 | 0:49:04
we have now sat down to do the interview | 0:49:04 | 0:49:06
and you are refusing to take part? | 0:49:06 | 0:49:08
I just need to know because if that is the case, I can leave. | 0:49:11 | 0:49:14
Ooh, wow! | 0:49:16 | 0:49:17
OK, thank you for your time. I appreciate your honesty. | 0:49:17 | 0:49:20
Well, that went well(!) | 0:49:32 | 0:49:33
I'm just frustrated. I've just got the hump. | 0:49:37 | 0:49:40
I just was so keen to speak to somebody of authority | 0:49:40 | 0:49:43
that could answer some of these questions. | 0:49:43 | 0:49:46
I came to the place they told me to, I came at the correct time, | 0:49:46 | 0:49:49
as soon as I get here, it's game over. | 0:49:49 | 0:49:51
You do feel like you've learned more, | 0:49:51 | 0:49:53
you've understood more, spending time in a prison | 0:49:53 | 0:49:55
than you do speaking to people that work for the government. | 0:49:55 | 0:49:58
And I'm from a formal foreign organisation, the BBC. You know? | 0:49:58 | 0:50:03
And I've been completely blown out, | 0:50:03 | 0:50:05
so imagine if you are a young, poor girl from the barrios | 0:50:05 | 0:50:08
and you want to lodge a complaint? | 0:50:08 | 0:50:10
On my way to meet Ana Maria, I get an urgent phone call. | 0:50:18 | 0:50:21
Last time I spoke to Ana Maria, | 0:50:24 | 0:50:25
we both decided that we were going to meet tonight at the bus stop. | 0:50:25 | 0:50:28
She was going to get the bus down to the border and she was going to | 0:50:28 | 0:50:32
meet her sister and try and cross into Guatemala. | 0:50:32 | 0:50:34
For whatever reason, she just rang me, she's incredibly upset, | 0:50:34 | 0:50:38
she said that's now not the plan. | 0:50:38 | 0:50:40
We are to meet at a completely different location. | 0:50:40 | 0:50:43
I don't know what's gone on. | 0:50:44 | 0:50:46
You know, and I am... | 0:50:47 | 0:50:48
I'm really worried for her because my understanding was... | 0:50:48 | 0:50:51
leaving the country, escaping, that was her only option, | 0:50:51 | 0:50:54
so now she's not doing that, I don't know where she's going to go. | 0:50:54 | 0:50:58
We meet a few hours north of San Pedro Sula. | 0:51:02 | 0:51:05
She's come with a friend. | 0:51:05 | 0:51:07
Explain to me why you're not going to | 0:51:09 | 0:51:11
go to the border today. What's happened? | 0:51:11 | 0:51:13
So your sister has just gone missing? | 0:51:18 | 0:51:20
So, what are you going to do? Where are you going to go? | 0:51:26 | 0:51:29
So, we're just relying on your sister, really? | 0:51:34 | 0:51:36
Is it worth us trying her again? | 0:51:36 | 0:51:38
This is her number, yeah? | 0:51:38 | 0:51:40
-Si? -Mm-hm. | 0:51:40 | 0:51:41
'It goes straight to voicemail.' | 0:51:44 | 0:51:47
The machine. | 0:51:47 | 0:51:48
Gracias. | 0:52:00 | 0:52:02
When I met her the first time, I thought her situation | 0:52:04 | 0:52:07
was pretty hopeless, but now there is nowhere for her to go. | 0:52:07 | 0:52:11
You know, the refuge I visited has closed down, | 0:52:13 | 0:52:17
we've had a thorough look and there are only two others in the country | 0:52:17 | 0:52:21
and they are both full. | 0:52:21 | 0:52:23
One of them takes five girls, one of them takes ten. | 0:52:23 | 0:52:25
I... | 0:52:25 | 0:52:28 | |
I can't help her. | 0:52:28 | 0:52:29
So, what's next? Do you need me to take you anywhere? | 0:52:33 | 0:52:36
Where do you want to go? | 0:52:36 | 0:52:37
ANA MARIA SPEAKS SPANISH | 0:52:37 | 0:52:39
I feel really frustrated and helpless. | 0:52:43 | 0:52:45
A friend has offered to take Ana Maria in for the night, | 0:52:53 | 0:52:56
but it's dangerously close to where the gangs are. | 0:52:56 | 0:52:59
Gracias. Take care. I'll call you, OK? | 0:53:02 | 0:53:05
'With her chance of escape gone for now, | 0:53:05 | 0:53:09
'I can only hope that Ana Maria's sister gets in touch soon.' | 0:53:09 | 0:53:12
STACEY SIGHS | 0:53:12 | 0:53:16
So, that's them off. | 0:53:16 | 0:53:17
It's crazy. It's totally... totally insane, her situation. | 0:53:20 | 0:53:25
It's midnight at San Pedro Sula central bus station. | 0:53:37 | 0:53:41
This is where I was going to meet Ana Maria and travel to the border. | 0:53:41 | 0:53:45
Lots of young women who are trying to escape Honduras, | 0:53:47 | 0:53:49
trying to escape San Pedro Sula, | 0:53:49 | 0:53:51
their journey will start here | 0:53:51 | 0:53:53
and it's a really frightening and dangerous one. | 0:53:53 | 0:53:56
Many pay human traffickers, known as coyotes, | 0:53:59 | 0:54:02
to get them to the US border. | 0:54:02 | 0:54:05
There's a lady here, | 0:54:05 | 0:54:07
she's got four kids in total, she's got no luggage whatsoever. | 0:54:07 | 0:54:10
There's probably also a coyote involved | 0:54:12 | 0:54:14
because people keep ushering her in the opposite direction. | 0:54:14 | 0:54:18
And with many of the women under the control of coyotes, | 0:54:21 | 0:54:24
they are too frightened to speak to me. | 0:54:24 | 0:54:27
Even paying thousands of dollars doesn't guarantee a safe passage. | 0:54:30 | 0:54:34
The risk of being raped en route means some women even get | 0:54:47 | 0:54:50
a contraceptive injection before departure. | 0:54:50 | 0:54:54
Many are also kidnapped and then killed | 0:54:54 | 0:54:56
if their families don't pay the ransom in time. | 0:54:56 | 0:54:59
But despite all these dangers, | 0:54:59 | 0:55:02
last year, 11,000 underage Honduran girls | 0:55:02 | 0:55:05
were stopped, trying to cross the US border. | 0:55:05 | 0:55:08
I don't blame them. I would do the same. | 0:55:08 | 0:55:12
If I lived here and I was poor and I was scared | 0:55:12 | 0:55:17
and I was being beaten by my husband and I was raped, I would try. | 0:55:17 | 0:55:22
I would. | 0:55:22 | 0:55:23
In my short time in Honduras, another 16 women have been murdered. | 0:55:25 | 0:55:30
Until something is done to make it safer, | 0:55:31 | 0:55:33
this bus station will remain full of women | 0:55:33 | 0:55:36
desperately trying to flee the country. | 0:55:36 | 0:55:38 |
