Across the country,

0:00:020:00:03

thousands of farming families work tirelessly around the clock.

0:00:030:00:07

SHE GRUNTS

0:00:070:00:09

Stop arguing, girls, give over.

0:00:090:00:11

HE WHISTLES LOUDLY

0:00:110:00:14

But there's one day each year...

0:00:140:00:16

Ay!

0:00:160:00:17

..where they get to leave the daily routine behind.

0:00:170:00:20

Right, here we come, Dorset.

0:00:200:00:23

These are show days...

0:00:230:00:24

A very, very warm welcome to Melplash Show.

0:00:240:00:27

..when they come together as a community...

0:00:270:00:29

APPLAUSE

0:00:290:00:31

..to showcase the fruits of their labour...

0:00:310:00:33

I just love showing my girls off.

0:00:330:00:35

..and try to win prizes for their breed champions...

0:00:370:00:40

Smashed it.

0:00:400:00:42

..and award-winning produce.

0:00:420:00:43

That's really nice cheese, that.

0:00:430:00:45

It was very good, darling.

0:00:470:00:50

There will be highs...

0:00:500:00:51

That's what we want to see, red.

0:00:510:00:52

Red is the best.

0:00:520:00:54

..and lows...

0:00:540:00:55

She's not happy enough to go.

0:00:550:00:57

..for the dedicated farmers who give everything

0:00:570:01:00

to walk away a champion.

0:01:000:01:03

Fingers crossed!

0:01:030:01:04

There are 11 native pig breeds in this country.

0:01:130:01:16

Their future survival is dependent

0:01:200:01:22

on the farmers who keep these rare blood lines going.

0:01:220:01:26

Love a good rub, don't you?

0:01:260:01:28

Eh?

0:01:280:01:30

Nick and Guy Kiddy

0:01:300:01:32

and David Fieldhouse both farm pedigree large whites.

0:01:320:01:36

In a few days, they will be showing them at one of livestock's most

0:01:400:01:43

important events - the English Winter Fair.

0:01:430:01:45

Lovely!

0:01:480:01:49

These farmers want to promote the breed,

0:01:520:01:54

but more importantly,

0:01:540:01:55

it could help them build a stronger future for their farms.

0:01:550:01:59

Just outside of Leeds city centre

0:02:110:02:13

live David and Lindsay and their son, Bo.

0:02:130:02:16

Theirs is not the usual farm set-up.

0:02:180:02:21

As well as farming, 32-year-old David has another demanding job.

0:02:300:02:35

He's a full-time builder.

0:02:350:02:37

It started in 2007 with the building side of things -

0:02:370:02:40

plastering and tiling, mainly.

0:02:400:02:42

Since then, it's just grown.

0:02:420:02:44

Building brings in a much-needed salary

0:02:460:02:49

while he establishes his herd of pigs,

0:02:490:02:51

but juggling two jobs like this can be exhausting.

0:02:510:02:54

To carry on going the way I am, I'd burn myself out, you know.

0:02:560:03:00

It's going to have to be one or the other, so hopefully,

0:03:000:03:03

in the next few years, we can say that we're actually pig farmers.

0:03:030:03:08

Until it starts earning the same as what the building side does,

0:03:080:03:13

then we'll transfer across.

0:03:130:03:14

His interest in farming, as is the case with so many,

0:03:160:03:19

comes from his own family roots.

0:03:190:03:21

As far as I know, it's my great-grandad who kept pigs,

0:03:250:03:28

but he always kept them as more a hobby.

0:03:280:03:30

The same with my grandfather, and my dad then took over from there,

0:03:300:03:35

and he then started showing.

0:03:350:03:37

And I always had an inkling that I wanted to do it,

0:03:370:03:41

but at a young age, there was everything else going on.

0:03:410:03:44

You know, you're going out with your friends and stuff like that.

0:03:440:03:46

It's only in the last ten years, really, isn't it?

0:03:460:03:49

-Yes.

-That I've actually been like, "Right,

0:03:490:03:53

"this is summat that I want to do."

0:03:530:03:55

If you'd have said I was going to marry a pig farmer

0:03:550:03:57

and fall in love with pigs, I would've...

0:03:570:04:00

I wouldn't have agreed, put it that way!

0:04:000:04:02

It's David's childhood memories of his grandad's farm

0:04:050:04:08

that fuels his passion to create the same for his family.

0:04:080:04:11

Every weekend, like summer holidays, I was just there.

0:04:130:04:18

You know, whether we was off going to shows,

0:04:180:04:21

it was just the environment that you wanted to grow up in.

0:04:210:04:23

There were woodlands, there were fields to go out and camp in.

0:04:230:04:27

Obviously, the livestock was there as well. So, yeah,

0:04:270:04:30

best part of my life spent down there.

0:04:300:04:32

It did wind down when his grandfather died, they kind of...

0:04:330:04:37

You stopped doing anything then, didn't you, for a while?

0:04:370:04:39

So you restarted back up with your dad.

0:04:390:04:41

Yeah, we literally wound it all the way back to just three pigs,

0:04:410:04:45

just so my dad could keep an interest in it.

0:04:450:04:48

It isn't just any pigs that David's interested in.

0:04:520:04:55

A lot of people don't realise

0:04:570:04:58

that large white pigs is on the decline and

0:04:580:05:00

it's more rare now than a Gloucester old spot,

0:05:000:05:02

which everybody knows about, but not about the large whites.

0:05:020:05:06

Also, we could try saving some of the rare blood lines that are just,

0:05:060:05:12

they're almost wiped out, really.

0:05:120:05:13

It's almost like a heritage, really.

0:05:130:05:15

You know, my grandfather's done it, my dad's done it.

0:05:150:05:17

I didn't really want to see it end.

0:05:170:05:19

Without his own farm, David had to rent land outside the city.

0:05:270:05:32

Travelling there and back twice a day to look after his pigs

0:05:320:05:36

while also building takes its toll.

0:05:360:05:38

It's tiring at best.

0:05:400:05:42

If I looked at the hours I did, it'd scare me.

0:05:420:05:44

There's days when you're thinking to yourself,

0:05:440:05:47

"Why am I doing this to myself?"

0:05:470:05:49

But you just, you've just got to...

0:05:500:05:53

You're just working towards summat.

0:05:530:05:55

So I just have to get on and get it done, really,

0:05:550:05:58

otherwise it won't get done.

0:05:580:06:00

David is one of the hardest working people that I've ever met,

0:06:040:06:08

and his dedication to the pigs is unwavering.

0:06:080:06:11

Then two years ago, along with the arrival of baby Bo,

0:06:110:06:16

things got even more difficult.

0:06:160:06:17

We were renting some land, but unfortunately that came to an end.

0:06:190:06:23

At that point, Dave was talking about kind of giving up the farming.

0:06:230:06:27

Hope arrived in an unlikely form.

0:06:280:06:31

David was a pig farmer with no land and he was about to meet a landowner

0:06:310:06:35

with more pigs than he could handle.

0:06:350:06:37

He just happened to be the local butcher.

0:06:390:06:42

I ended up actually working for the butcher's,

0:06:420:06:44

just part-time for a little bit of pocket money,

0:06:440:06:46

so that's when I entered into a conversation

0:06:460:06:48

with Anthony, the owner, about the fact

0:06:480:06:50

we'd lost the land and we were scaling back

0:06:500:06:52

and Dave was considering giving it up.

0:06:520:06:54

And at the same time, they had just had a litter and I think

0:06:540:06:57

they'd realised it wasn't as easy as it looked.

0:06:570:07:00

The first time we bred any pigs, you know,

0:07:030:07:06

we soon realised that I didn't have really the time or the knowledge

0:07:060:07:10

to do the breeding myself, but I wanted to get the good quality,

0:07:100:07:14

high welfare pork for us.

0:07:140:07:17

So I spoke to Dave, and it seemed like a perfect partnership, really.

0:07:170:07:23

-How are you?

-Good. How are you doing?

-Yeah, not too bad.

0:07:230:07:25

-How are the pigs this week?

-Really good, yeah.

0:07:250:07:28

The butcher threw David a much-needed lifeline.

0:07:280:07:31

He had a similar kind of idea about animal welfare, good breeding,

0:07:310:07:36

and he was really helpful when I bought my first pigs.

0:07:360:07:40

Anthony the butcher has rented David 12 acres of land,

0:07:430:07:48

but it's 35 miles away from where they live,

0:07:480:07:50

and David travels there and back twice a day.

0:07:500:07:54

This is a farmer committed to building a future.

0:07:540:07:57

We're up at five o'clock in the morning to get up here.

0:08:000:08:03

I need to,

0:08:040:08:06

while feeding them, check the sows to make sure that

0:08:060:08:09

there's no ailments,

0:08:090:08:11

and then, from there, once I'm happy with everything, that's fine,

0:08:110:08:15

it's off to work.

0:08:150:08:16

And then back home on a night,

0:08:160:08:19

see to the livestock again and feed on a night and then get home.

0:08:190:08:24

-He's always an hour late for everything...

-Yeah.

0:08:250:08:27

..because he's busy doing the pigs

0:08:270:08:29

or one of the pigs needed serving, or...

0:08:290:08:32

-I always think I can fit everything in, but...

-You can't!

0:08:320:08:35

That's the one thing about moving them to Ripon.

0:08:350:08:37

Now it's an extra two hours' drive a day, at least.

0:08:370:08:40

But, you know, you've just got to accept that's part of it.

0:08:400:08:45

The early mornings, the late nights,

0:08:450:08:48

it's a brilliant lifestyle!

0:08:480:08:49

150 miles south in Bedfordshire is Nick and his father, Guy.

0:08:580:09:03

They bought their farm together just ten years ago.

0:09:030:09:06

I think we're quite a good team

0:09:080:09:09

but yeah, of course we have disagreements sometimes.

0:09:090:09:11

It'd be impossible to always have the same opinion, wouldn't it?

0:09:110:09:14

It's sometimes called progress.

0:09:140:09:16

The Kiddy family has an impressive agricultural lineage.

0:09:210:09:24

The family's been involved in farming

0:09:240:09:26

probably as far back as we can go.

0:09:260:09:29

Certainly my great-grandparents were farming, and we know we've got

0:09:290:09:32

relations further back than that,

0:09:320:09:33

and it's all sorts of farming, you know.

0:09:330:09:35

The family's always been mixed farmers.

0:09:350:09:37

They've always had arable and livestock.

0:09:370:09:39

It's no surprise that such a rich heritage would rub off

0:09:430:09:47

on 34-year-old Nick.

0:09:470:09:49

Any child, you know, who's brought up on a farm,

0:09:530:09:55

you just love being around the animals.

0:09:550:09:57

You know, cute little lambs or the piglets or chicks or

0:09:570:10:00

whatever it may be, you know?

0:10:000:10:01

You play farms in your bedroom and then you just can't wait to get out

0:10:010:10:06

there and play with the big stuff, with the proper stuff.

0:10:060:10:08

It's just, yeah, what lads want to do, I suppose.

0:10:080:10:10

Play with tractors.

0:10:100:10:11

But the reality and demands of farming life is not child's play.

0:10:190:10:23

We own ten acres and then we rent

0:10:240:10:27

arable land and grassland in the area.

0:10:270:10:29

So there's about 180 acres altogether.

0:10:290:10:32

We've got sheep, pigs, cattle, poultry.

0:10:320:10:35

And then we grow arable crops,

0:10:350:10:37

mainly wheat and barley,

0:10:370:10:38

but all the arable crops we grow is for pig food.

0:10:380:10:41

Unfortunately, despite all their hard work,

0:10:470:10:50

the farm doesn't provide enough

0:10:500:10:52

to support them and the rest of the family.

0:10:520:10:54

So they've opened up a small farm shop

0:10:570:11:00

to sell their veg, their eggs and, of course, their pigs.

0:11:000:11:04

A small farm like this, you've got to do things like this.

0:11:040:11:08

By selling the meat ourselves, we're cutting out the middleman.

0:11:080:11:11

Guy believes having the pigs in the field is nature's own advert.

0:11:110:11:15

You know, they drive past, they see our pigs out there and they think,

0:11:160:11:19

you know, "I can go and buy one of those, and I've seen it grow,

0:11:190:11:23

"even if it's from a distance."

0:11:230:11:25

It's really important that we show that we really do care

0:11:250:11:28

about our animals and how they're looked after,

0:11:280:11:30

and we try and to do the job right.

0:11:300:11:32

But even with the shop, times are tough.

0:11:360:11:40

You couldn't be here full-time,

0:11:400:11:41

it's not financially viable for all of us to have a living out of here.

0:11:410:11:46

At the end of the day, you still got to pay the bills, you know,

0:11:460:11:49

that sort of thing, and put food on the table.

0:11:490:11:51

So, yeah, the farm does a certain amount,

0:11:510:11:53

but... It's worth the work as well.

0:11:530:11:54

So Nick has to work on the farm in the neighbouring county.

0:11:550:11:58

My other job is I manage a beef unit, which is pedigree

0:12:020:12:06

Longhorn cows in Hertfordshire.

0:12:060:12:09

It's quite a large business - we run about 170 animals.

0:12:090:12:13

That's my...

0:12:130:12:14

I wouldn't say my nine-to-five, but that's...

0:12:140:12:17

Seven till five, that's my job,

0:12:170:12:19

and then, yeah, weekends as well.

0:12:190:12:21

Nick's dream of returning full-time to his own family farm is driven by

0:12:230:12:28

the pride in his pigs.

0:12:280:12:31

Hello, girl.

0:12:310:12:32

They now own the oldest herd of pedigree large whites

0:12:320:12:35

in the country.

0:12:350:12:37

Quite an achievement.

0:12:380:12:39

I think my grandfather would be amazed if he knew.

0:12:390:12:41

And they have the family records to prove it.

0:12:420:12:46

This is the herd record in this farm right back to 1944 onwards, really.

0:12:460:12:51

-Yeah.

-Yeah. Modern records, of course, are all on computer

0:12:510:12:54

-so it doesn't take so much space.

-No.

0:12:540:12:56

Most pedigree breeders in the '40s, '50s, '60s

0:12:560:12:59

showed their pigs as a way of advertising what they were doing.

0:12:590:13:04

As the pedigree industry's almost disappeared now -

0:13:040:13:07

relatively few people do it in this country...

0:13:070:13:11

..but those that still do it still show, you know,

0:13:130:13:15

to promote what you've got cos it's the only way other breeders

0:13:150:13:18

in this country can see your pigs.

0:13:180:13:20

For both, showing their pigs is still a very serious part

0:13:240:13:28

of their business.

0:13:280:13:29

But for Nick, it brings out some primal instincts.

0:13:290:13:32

-Yeah, you really don't like to...

-No.

0:13:370:13:40

..don't like to blow your own trumpet or anything, but...

0:13:400:13:43

-No, no.

-No, yeah. No, we've been doing it a long time.

0:13:430:13:45

You know, I'm quite competitive. I like to win.

0:13:450:13:49

It's eyes down looking at the judge,

0:13:490:13:51

you're trying to get your pig to show itself off the best

0:13:510:13:55

so you can get that prize.

0:13:550:13:57

It's all worth it, though, because winning prizes

0:14:060:14:10

means their pigs are sought after.

0:14:100:14:12

We've sent them... Falkland Islands is the furthest they've gone, but

0:14:140:14:18

we've sent pigs to Japan, Taiwan.

0:14:180:14:20

Pigs really do fly.

0:14:200:14:21

Back in Yorkshire, David and Lindsay also have dreams they want to

0:14:330:14:36

realise. For them, it's all about raising free-range pigs.

0:14:360:14:41

We were always told, you know,

0:14:430:14:45

to respect the animals and the animals came first, so I'm wanting

0:14:450:14:51

everything to go free-range so that we can give the best for them.

0:14:510:14:55

They aren't with us that long -

0:14:550:14:57

it's only six months until they're really finished -

0:14:570:15:00

so if we can do the best we can for them

0:15:000:15:03

-and give them the best life we can...

-Yeah.

0:15:030:15:05

They now have a herd of 50 pigs,

0:15:050:15:08

and they can become very attached to them.

0:15:080:15:11

They're just... They're summat else. I mean,

0:15:110:15:14

they can be stubborn, but they can also be affectionate and...

0:15:140:15:19

They're like a big dog, really.

0:15:190:15:21

You know, they're friendly enough at times.

0:15:210:15:24

Come on, then.

0:15:280:15:29

Good girl.

0:15:300:15:32

I'm the patter. I go around,

0:15:340:15:36

keep the animals happy by giving them a pat.

0:15:360:15:39

Good girl. Yes, you are.

0:15:400:15:44

There's something about them that when you come near them,

0:15:440:15:47

I don't know, there's just a...

0:15:470:15:49

It's just an exchange you get, I suppose with any animal,

0:15:500:15:52

but as soon as I come, I realise how much I've missed them.

0:15:520:15:54

I don't know, I think it's quite rewarding

0:15:540:15:56

just to have contact with them, which sounds a bit...

0:15:560:15:59

..silly, a bit hippy, but I enjoy it for that reason.

0:16:000:16:03

I suppose that's just rewarding in itself, isn't it?

0:16:030:16:06

Love a good rub, don't you?

0:16:060:16:08

However, these young farmers' ambitions go beyond pet pigs.

0:16:190:16:24

Their future now relies on becoming successful free-range breeders.

0:16:240:16:28

We aim to breed all year round.

0:16:290:16:33

For us to just do it seasonally,

0:16:350:16:37

like you might do with cattle and sheep,

0:16:370:16:40

we still have to feed the pigs in between,

0:16:400:16:43

so we need the cash flow coming in all the time.

0:16:430:16:47

What Dave's just doing is, when he is pressing on their back,

0:16:520:16:55

it's seeing if she's coming into season.

0:16:550:16:57

But Lindsay is a bit more than a pig patter -

0:17:000:17:03

she's been to agricultural college and likes to lend a hand.

0:17:030:17:07

If one of the pigs is struggling to give birth, I'll get a phone call,

0:17:090:17:13

"I need your little hands,"

0:17:130:17:14

and sometimes I'll have to go in and help deliver,

0:17:140:17:17

which can be rewarding, but can also be incredibly daunting.

0:17:170:17:21

But it's... You can't leave them in distress, so...

0:17:210:17:24

And Dave's got hands like shovels!

0:17:240:17:26

So if I was a pig, I wouldn't want him helping me either!

0:17:280:17:32

David and Lindsay's free-range future begins with the piglets

0:17:320:17:36

getting a good start in life.

0:17:360:17:38

Come on, you guys, what's the matter?

0:17:390:17:42

What? Come on.

0:17:420:17:45

They just bring a smile to my face.

0:17:490:17:51

Hiya. What?

0:17:520:17:54

What?

0:17:550:17:56

Most farmers would be laughing at me talking to them like children,

0:17:560:18:00

but it's how I feel.

0:18:000:18:02

But I think, you know,

0:18:020:18:04

we've discussed at length kind of like the ethics

0:18:040:18:07

behind farming and things, and

0:18:070:18:08

nothing we do is without reverence and without a lot of consideration.

0:18:080:18:13

Dave's put a lot of hard work into giving them the best possible life,

0:18:130:18:17

so for us we are conserving the breeds,

0:18:170:18:20

we're giving high welfare and we're doing our best.

0:18:200:18:23

I say "we", I'm not doing anything.

0:18:230:18:25

Dave's doing his best.

0:18:250:18:26

And hopefully, the pigs appreciate it!

0:18:280:18:32

Back in Bedfordshire,

0:18:440:18:45

Nick's competitiveness kicks in

0:18:450:18:47

as he's selecting the best pigs to take to this year's show.

0:18:470:18:51

Good boy, go on.

0:18:510:18:53

-He's a fair pig, he is.

-He was the dirtiest one as well.

0:18:530:18:56

Yeah.

0:18:560:18:57

This one is going to be the one going to the show.

0:19:000:19:02

Just for his shape, really.

0:19:020:19:04

He's a good length pig.

0:19:040:19:06

He's got a bit on his shoulders,

0:19:060:19:08

perhaps a minus, depending on the judge on the day.

0:19:080:19:11

The other thing is he's a boar.

0:19:120:19:13

Some judges don't like boars,

0:19:130:19:15

they only like gilts in the...at the fairs,

0:19:150:19:18

so a bit of a risk, taking a boar, but I take the best pig.

0:19:180:19:22

Choosing the best pig is one skill -

0:19:220:19:25

being able to give him his first bath is another.

0:19:250:19:28

Yeah, just give him a good scrub down.

0:19:290:19:31

He hasn't been washed before, so we'll see how it goes.

0:19:310:19:34

PIG SQUEALS

0:19:340:19:35

-That's just hot, is it?

-It's warm, should be about right.

0:19:350:19:38

Yeah. Before you burn me.

0:19:380:19:40

I'm not worried about you, I'm more worried about the pig.

0:19:410:19:44

Lather them up.

0:19:460:19:47

All right, mate.

0:19:510:19:52

PIG SQUEALS

0:19:520:19:54

He's just missing his mates a little bit.

0:19:540:19:57

He'll have to be washed a few more times before he goes.

0:19:590:20:02

A bit dirty still.

0:20:020:20:04

Quite crusted in a little bit, so that will be his first bath.

0:20:040:20:07

We'll give him a rinse off.

0:20:090:20:10

Now for a bit of piggy talcum.

0:20:130:20:15

The other thing we put on is a thing called wood flour.

0:20:170:20:20

It's just basically really fine sawdust.

0:20:200:20:24

It helps them dry off so they don't get cold.

0:20:240:20:28

It also whitens them up a little bit -

0:20:320:20:35

not much, but it does help.

0:20:350:20:37

So, yeah, he looks whiter now, but it just covers the dirt up.

0:20:370:20:41

Both of these pig farmers are struggling against the odds

0:20:470:20:51

to keep their farming dreams alive.

0:20:510:20:53

Showing the animals will not only boost business but also give them

0:20:580:21:02

a much-needed day out from the endless hard work.

0:21:020:21:05

Who's a good girl? Who's a good girl?

0:21:070:21:11

David's father will be driving his pigs to the show tomorrow.

0:21:120:21:17

I'm proud how he's built it up.

0:21:170:21:19

He's doing very, very well

0:21:190:21:20

in that respect. He's building his numbers up

0:21:200:21:24

and he's very passionate about that. Very passionate.

0:21:240:21:27

Don't chew my feet. Don't chew my feet!

0:21:270:21:30

I'd like to see him expand, a little, you know, more

0:21:320:21:35

and get a decent living out of it,

0:21:350:21:40

for him and his family, and my grandson.

0:21:400:21:44

There is just time for a final pamper before he bids farewell.

0:21:440:21:48

It always makes your life easier if you can handle them.

0:21:480:21:51

They're not pets.

0:21:510:21:52

In Bedfordshire, Nick and Guy

0:21:530:21:55

are ready to get their clean pigs loaded.

0:21:550:21:57

All right, boy. Time for a ride.

0:21:590:22:01

Yes. It's good to have a go and see how we do against everybody else.

0:22:030:22:06

There we are. Look, you've got lots of straw in there. Go on. In you go.

0:22:080:22:11

I'm staying here to do all the work.

0:22:110:22:13

Yeah, and I'm going to have a good time.

0:22:130:22:15

It's finally time to head off to the show.

0:22:250:22:28

Staffordshire's English Winter Fair may be set in humble surroundings,

0:22:400:22:45

but it is one of the most important livestock shows in the Midlands.

0:22:450:22:48

Dating back to 1850, it attracts farmers from all over the country.

0:22:510:22:56

They come here to prove their livestock is the best.

0:22:560:22:59

As well as the judges,

0:23:010:23:03

there will also be butchers and auctioneers here today,

0:23:030:23:06

all looking for the finest animals.

0:23:060:23:08

We are encouraging improvement

0:23:100:23:12

in livestock through competition.

0:23:120:23:14

So, people want to win, and to win,

0:23:140:23:17

they need to breed the best.

0:23:170:23:19

Whilst the pigs sleep peacefully...

0:23:300:23:32

..it's an early start for Nick.

0:23:370:23:39

So, yeah, we're here, it's 6.30.

0:23:470:23:49

So we're just going to get the pigs weighed,

0:23:490:23:51

ready for the show. And then we'll get them washed, get them fed,

0:23:510:23:55

get it all sorted, then, 9.30...

0:23:550:23:58

show time.

0:23:580:23:59

Before Nick can take his pigs into the show ring,

0:24:050:24:08

they need to be weighed.

0:24:080:24:09

Right. 63.5 kilo, Nick, that one.

0:24:120:24:15

-63 and a half?

-Yep.

0:24:150:24:17

That one's in. Next one.

0:24:170:24:19

The weigh-in allows stewards

0:24:190:24:21

to ensure pigs are in the right classes,

0:24:210:24:24

with porker class being lightest, and bacon class the heavyweights.

0:24:240:24:29

-64.

-64?

-Yeah.

0:24:290:24:31

Nick's pair tip the scales in the porker class.

0:24:310:24:34

Being so closely matched will stand him in good stead in the ring.

0:24:340:24:38

You know, they're half a kilo out,

0:24:380:24:40

which for a pair, I'm quite happy with.

0:24:400:24:43

So, it means I'm doing something right.

0:24:430:24:45

David's father, Ron, has also arrived early.

0:24:530:24:56

I know what I want. Wellies.

0:24:570:25:00

My wellies.

0:25:000:25:01

He's on pig-prep duty,

0:25:010:25:03

whilst David does the feeding rounds back in Leeds.

0:25:030:25:06

Morning! Come on.

0:25:140:25:16

Come on. Come on.

0:25:180:25:20

Breakfast! Come on, wakey-wakey!

0:25:230:25:26

Whilst Ron and his son's pigs have their breakfast,

0:25:260:25:29

Nick finds time for a cup of tea

0:25:290:25:31

and a natter with one of the stewards, Tracy.

0:25:310:25:34

Right, that's the one with sugar.

0:25:360:25:37

-Thank you, my love.

-That's the one without.

0:25:370:25:40

-All right, love.

-Thank you very much.

-See you in a bit.

-OK.

0:25:410:25:43

You know where it is when you want another.

0:25:430:25:45

Drop a rum in it!

0:25:450:25:47

Yeah. Should have brought some. It's freezing.

0:25:470:25:49

-The show people all help one another out, don't we?

-Yeah.

0:25:490:25:52

We have a routine together...

0:25:520:25:53

..where we'll start in the morning.

0:25:550:25:56

Somebody'll muck out, somebody'll wash.

0:25:560:25:59

You know, it just makes it, then, a whole team effort,

0:25:590:26:01

rather than you doing your own pigs and you're on your own.

0:26:010:26:04

Yeah, everyone helps everyone out

0:26:040:26:05

and then, you know, we all go for breakfast

0:26:050:26:07

-and then all go in the ring.

-And then get serious.

0:26:070:26:09

Get serious in the ring.

0:26:090:26:11

Heads down. No mates then, it's like...

0:26:110:26:14

-Yeah.

-Dog eat dog.

-Yeah.

0:26:140:26:16

-But... Yeah.

-Then it's back to friends again.

0:26:160:26:18

As soon as you get out of the ring, it's time for a pint and a chat...

0:26:180:26:21

And, "Why did the judge do that?"

0:26:210:26:24

Yeah!

0:26:240:26:25

The sun's well and truly up

0:26:290:26:31

and Ron is going to have a go at pig bathing.

0:26:310:26:34

It seems his son has left him all the good jobs(!)

0:26:340:26:37

Ah, is that nice?

0:26:400:26:42

Eh?

0:26:420:26:43

PIG SQUEALS

0:26:430:26:45

Yes!

0:26:450:26:46

The farming community's spirit is a heartening one.

0:26:480:26:51

You can always rely on support and a friendly neighbour.

0:26:510:26:55

Ronald!

0:26:550:26:57

-Hello!

-Have you got loads of hot water?

0:26:570:27:00

No! I think you've used it.

0:27:000:27:01

I haven't used it!

0:27:010:27:03

I like to blame somebody.

0:27:030:27:05

-I fetched my own.

-Did you?

0:27:050:27:07

Is that nice now?

0:27:070:27:09

Is it nice now?

0:27:090:27:11

Eh?

0:27:110:27:12

This is the beauty prep.

0:27:140:27:15

Nearly there, ladies.

0:27:180:27:20

Nearly there.

0:27:200:27:21

Now, that'll dry you up, won't it?

0:27:210:27:24

Eh?

0:27:240:27:25

With the hard work done,

0:27:280:27:31

there's just enough time for Ron to get himself ready.

0:27:310:27:35

Son David and the family arrive after a two-and-a-half-hour drive.

0:27:350:27:39

It's been a bit of a mad dash, but looking forward...

0:27:390:27:42

Dave's time-keeping is always...

0:27:420:27:44

He walked in at ten minutes before he wanted to leave the house.

0:27:440:27:48

And, then, was going, "Come on, we need to go!"

0:27:480:27:51

I was, like, "You don't say?"

0:27:510:27:54

Typical.

0:27:540:27:55

Everyone's here just in time, as the judging's about to begin.

0:27:590:28:03

What's important about this show is that, unlike some others,

0:28:040:28:08

it's about judging the animal from field to fork.

0:28:080:28:12

It's been a show that has been going on for...

0:28:120:28:16

..a long, long time.

0:28:170:28:19

It's got a huge heritage, huge following.

0:28:190:28:21

We are really catering for the farming and butchery industries,

0:28:210:28:27

so there's not a lot of general public here.

0:28:270:28:29

We've got classes for sheep, pigs, and most especially cattle.

0:28:290:28:35

We've also got classes for carcasses.

0:28:350:28:39

At the end of the day, you can see what the finished animal looks like.

0:28:390:28:43

With all the farmers having prepped

0:28:450:28:48

their live and not-quite-so-live stock,

0:28:480:28:51

the competition is finally ready to kick off.

0:28:510:28:54

First into the ring is builder David and his father, Ron.

0:28:560:28:59

They have their heaviest pair in the bacon class.

0:29:000:29:03

-Do you want a board?

-Yes!

0:29:040:29:06

These pigs weigh in between 11 to 14 stone.

0:29:080:29:12

It's taken a huge amount of effort to get ready for the show,

0:29:150:29:18

and impressing today's judge is paramount.

0:29:180:29:22

I'm from a background of farming and from the meat industry.

0:29:220:29:26

Don't know anything else. Only just done this job all my life.

0:29:260:29:28

I will be looking out for good pigs,

0:29:280:29:30

with good loins, good hams, good shape.

0:29:300:29:34

You know, full of meat. Just a little touch, cover of fat.

0:29:340:29:38

Exactly what the butcher wants.

0:29:380:29:39

This will be the show, approaching Christmas,

0:29:390:29:42

that they would all very much like to win.

0:29:420:29:44

So, yeah, very competitive out there.

0:29:440:29:46

If we can just have these... Just squeeze, just so, just to...

0:29:460:29:50

Wrangling a pair of pigs is a real skill.

0:29:520:29:55

David and his dad are doing the best they can.

0:29:550:29:58

Let the judge see them. Let the judge see 'em.

0:30:010:30:04

A win would really help David's small pig farm.

0:30:040:30:08

Baby Bo is giving as much encouragement as he can.

0:30:080:30:11

In the chaos of the ring, they need to catch the judge's eye.

0:30:150:30:19

Take them back over there, if we can.

0:30:200:30:22

Hold them there.

0:30:270:30:29

Finally, the judge seems to be paying them some attention.

0:30:290:30:32

Ron is anxious for his son to do well.

0:30:350:30:37

It's a blue rosette for David.

0:30:440:30:46

Thank you.

0:30:460:30:47

-Cheers.

-A very respectable second place against tough competition.

0:30:480:30:53

That was good. Yeah.

0:30:550:30:57

I'm happy with that. Stiff opposition,

0:30:570:30:59

but came out with second.

0:30:590:31:02

They showed theirselves really well.

0:31:020:31:05

It's hectic, but we got through it.

0:31:050:31:07

Even Bo wants to be part of this first triumph.

0:31:080:31:11

He is, after all, the reason David is working so hard

0:31:160:31:19

for their future.

0:31:190:31:20

Across the massive shed, judging is in full swing.

0:31:290:31:32

With almost everyone here a professional,

0:31:380:31:40

the pressure is really on.

0:31:400:31:42

Over in the pig section, the spotlight is now on Nick.

0:31:440:31:48

His dad is looking after the farm,

0:31:480:31:50

so he's bringing in an extra pair of hands to help.

0:31:500:31:53

I'm here on my own, so, yeah,

0:31:550:31:57

Grace has kindly offered to help me today.

0:31:570:31:59

Grace is well versed in all things pigs.

0:31:590:32:01

Her mother and show steward Tracy has encouraged her love

0:32:010:32:04

of these animals since she was three.

0:32:040:32:07

She's what we call a pig expert.

0:32:070:32:09

So, pig whisperer.

0:32:090:32:11

-Hopefully.

-Don't say that,

0:32:110:32:12

cos they probably won't do what I want them to now.

0:32:120:32:16

Go on. Wakey-wakey.

0:32:160:32:18

Nick's got some clever tricks up his sleeve

0:32:180:32:21

to keep his pair focused.

0:32:210:32:22

So, yeah. We haven't fed these this morning.

0:32:240:32:26

So, hopefully, in the ring, we can bribe them with a bit of food to go

0:32:260:32:28

-where we want them to go.

-Hopefully.

0:32:280:32:31

Touch wood.

0:32:310:32:32

-We'll see.

-Fingers crossed, Nick's plan to keep them peckish pays off.

0:32:330:32:38

It seems the pigs have other plans.

0:32:500:32:52

Nick and Grace need to get them under control

0:32:570:33:00

to stand up to the competition and show them at their best.

0:33:000:33:04

HE LAUGHS

0:33:040:33:06

Getting them side-by-side and standing still

0:33:090:33:12

is not as easy as everyone else is making it look.

0:33:120:33:15

Finally, Nick and Grace get them to calm down.

0:33:230:33:26

That's it. That's it.

0:33:260:33:29

Right. OK.

0:33:370:33:39

Yep.

0:33:390:33:40

Lovely. Thank you.

0:33:430:33:45

Yeah. He's had his look. We'll see what he does in a minute.

0:33:490:33:52

If I can just wander, just have another little...

0:33:560:33:59

Just wander around.

0:33:590:34:01

It seems Nick's lively pigs have brought the judge back

0:34:040:34:07

for another look.

0:34:070:34:09

There we go. Congratulations.

0:34:130:34:15

Thank you very much.

0:34:170:34:18

It's first prize to Nick -

0:34:180:34:20

a success straight off the mark.

0:34:200:34:22

Thank you very much.

0:34:220:34:24

-All right.

-Thank you.

0:34:240:34:26

His desire to win and the hard work he puts into it has paid off.

0:34:280:34:31

That's great. Not what I expected when I came,

0:34:330:34:36

so I'm really happy with that.

0:34:360:34:38

Makes the early starts worthwhile. So...

0:34:390:34:41

-Yeah, no, well done, Grace. She's a pro.

-Did you win?

0:34:410:34:45

-Yeah. And the reserve.

-Won the pair.

-Ooh! Get you!

0:34:450:34:48

The British Pig Association was established in 1884.

0:35:000:35:04

Their secretary, Sanders Spencer,

0:35:040:35:06

saw the need to keep a record of bloodlines.

0:35:060:35:09

There were three founding breeds registered.

0:35:100:35:13

Amongst them was a large white called Hollywell Jimmy...

0:35:140:35:17

..and Miss Emily, a middle white,

0:35:180:35:21

and a Tamworth.

0:35:210:35:22

Sanders Spencer shipped them around the world for breeding.

0:35:220:35:26

All the purebred pedigree pigs at the show today

0:35:260:35:29

can trace their ancestry

0:35:290:35:30

back through the herd books established over 130 years ago.

0:35:300:35:35

Today, the large white in the UK is on the decline,

0:35:350:35:39

which is why our farmers are keen to promote the breed.

0:35:390:35:42

There's only 350 large whites and 300 large blacks.

0:35:420:35:46

That gives you an idea

0:35:460:35:48

of the sort of scale of the rarity.

0:35:480:35:50

The only reason those pigs survive

0:35:500:35:52

is if people keep them for a business.

0:35:520:35:55

They have to have a place

0:35:550:35:57

in farming, they have to have some sort of marketplace,

0:35:570:36:01

and these winter shows, that's what it's about.

0:36:010:36:03

It's about pigs that people are going to eat,

0:36:030:36:05

it's about interacting with butchers,

0:36:050:36:07

and so that's why it's a very important part of our tradition.

0:36:070:36:12

As the day continues, the fair is busier than ever...

0:36:210:36:24

..with everyone trying to push their best animals forward.

0:36:310:36:34

It's a chance for David and Lindsay to take a break...

0:36:360:36:39

I'd say down there.

0:36:390:36:40

..and find out how their carcass entry has done in the competition.

0:36:400:36:44

We've got placement. You can see from here how many carcasses are in.

0:36:450:36:50

So to get even a placement at fourth, I mean,

0:36:500:36:53

it's not what you want,

0:36:530:36:54

but it's still a placement and we're happy with that.

0:36:540:36:57

Coming fourth against dozens of other entries

0:36:570:36:59

from around the country is a great achievement

0:36:590:37:02

for this full-time builder.

0:37:020:37:04

A chance to see so much competition gives David great insight.

0:37:040:37:09

The future of their business relies on his ability to produce free-range

0:37:090:37:13

pork that the butchers will want to buy.

0:37:130:37:16

I was saying to Lindsay where we can improve for the coming years.

0:37:160:37:20

We know what we've seen with the carcasses that we need to improve

0:37:200:37:24

a little bit on the eye muscle and stuff on the carcasses, so...

0:37:240:37:29

It's all positive, really.

0:37:290:37:30

Outside, the winter sun is beginning to set.

0:37:340:37:37

But inside the show ring, the competition is heating up.

0:37:370:37:40

Nick's already chalked up a champion and first rosette.

0:37:410:37:45

Now it's the final chance to add to his tally.

0:37:450:37:48

We're going to move on to the singles shortly,

0:37:480:37:51

so I've got that one single in there

0:37:510:37:52

and then we'll be taking one of those champion pair out, too.

0:37:520:37:56

Which, to be honest with you, is probably the one that behaved

0:37:560:37:58

the best cos the other one was a bit mad.

0:37:580:38:00

-Are you ready?

-Once again,

0:38:000:38:01

he calls on the highly skilled pig handler Grace.

0:38:010:38:05

-Look out.

-They each take one of Nick's pigs in the ring,

0:38:050:38:08

meaning he doubles his chances of a win.

0:38:080:38:10

Mind out, please.

0:38:150:38:16

Grace looks at home as usual, keeping her pig focused on food,

0:38:170:38:22

whereas Nick seems to be part of a merry dance.

0:38:220:38:24

A pig tango, to be precise.

0:38:300:38:33

A judge inspects Grace and her calm pig...

0:38:430:38:46

..and casts a long eye over everyone and their animals.

0:38:550:38:59

It's a busy ring full of potential prize-winning pigs.

0:38:590:39:03

This is a very tough call.

0:39:050:39:07

It is, isn't it? Very.

0:39:070:39:08

-Right. OK?

-Yeah.

0:39:130:39:15

The judge has made his final decision.

0:39:150:39:17

Second.

0:39:200:39:21

-Here we go, all right?

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:39:230:39:25

Ever-professional Grace wins second place.

0:39:250:39:28

There are two more rosettes to be awarded.

0:39:310:39:34

Nick could scoop a double if he lands a place.

0:39:340:39:37

There's one more coming this way now.

0:39:370:39:39

-There we go.

-Thank you very much.

0:39:390:39:41

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:39:410:39:42

Fourth place. Not a bad result for someone who spent half their time

0:39:430:39:48

dancing around the ring.

0:39:480:39:49

Yeah, really pleased with that.

0:39:530:39:55

Every pig we've taken out has been placed,

0:39:550:39:57

so, yeah, really happy.

0:39:570:39:58

The English Winter Fair has been a successful day for both farmers.

0:39:580:40:02

Yes, I'm happy, very happy.

0:40:030:40:06

We've done well, it's been a very successful day for us.

0:40:060:40:10

It proves that we're doing something right

0:40:100:40:12

and we're heading the right way with our pigs.

0:40:120:40:14

If you said at the beginning of the day I'd have a first, a second,

0:40:140:40:17

a fourth and a reserve champion, I'd have bitten your hand off, so, yeah,

0:40:170:40:21

really happy with that.

0:40:210:40:22

-Cheers.

-They have won rosettes

0:40:230:40:25

and the esteem of the judging professionals.

0:40:250:40:28

It's very inspiring for me to see the effort that these guys

0:40:280:40:33

put into looking after their pigs.

0:40:330:40:34

I have to say that I...

0:40:340:40:36

I said before that I get a lot of satisfaction

0:40:360:40:40

and pleasure out of it,

0:40:400:40:41

but, of course, I don't have to get up at six o'clock in the morning

0:40:410:40:45

and feed pigs and then make sure I get home before it goes dark.

0:40:450:40:48

It's the people who actually look after the pigs, those are the people

0:40:480:40:52

that really are inspiring.

0:40:520:40:54

For farmers across the country, the showing season is coming to an end.

0:41:030:41:08

We'll keep pushing forward, keep breeding the pigs, keep, you know,

0:41:080:41:11

trying to find that perfect pig and, you know,

0:41:110:41:14

we'll keep coming out and see what we do, but, yeah, we won't stop.

0:41:140:41:17

It's addictive, so we just carry on.

0:41:170:41:19

It's been a full-on year of a 24/7 workload.

0:41:190:41:22

It can be a lonely old job, farming, sometimes -

0:41:250:41:27

you can be out on your own for hours, days, weeks on your own, so,

0:41:270:41:29

you know, it's good to get out, see people, catch up, have a good chat.

0:41:290:41:33

We're like a load of old ladies, really,

0:41:330:41:35

we like a good old chat, any gossip and...

0:41:350:41:37

You know, just have a few beers tonight and...

0:41:370:41:40

summarise the day, I should think.

0:41:400:41:42

The hard work and commitment is all worthwhile

0:41:420:41:45

when the farmers see their farms heading in the right direction.

0:41:450:41:49

We want the idyllic life where you're in the countryside.

0:41:500:41:55

Love a good rub, don't you?

0:41:550:41:58

Eh?

0:41:580:41:59

And seeing Bo grow up, having the time rather than doing two jobs,

0:41:590:42:03

and I think that's part of the drive as well,

0:42:030:42:05

is to get that so I don't miss out on him growing up.

0:42:050:42:09

I'm very proud, very proud of him.

0:42:090:42:11

He's...

0:42:110:42:12

You know, he's done very, very well.

0:42:120:42:14

Yeah, I wouldn't say we'll be cracking open the champagne, but...

0:42:140:42:17

No, he said he's going to go home and plaster the bedroom.

0:42:170:42:20

That's what he said.

0:42:200:42:22

So, you know, that's a celebration for me.

0:42:220:42:24

Yeah. Maybe not so much for me...

0:42:240:42:26

Romance is a little bit dead, but...

0:42:260:42:28

You know, when the extension's done, life will resume.
