In Hemel Hempstead, 19-year-old Max is preparing for his first-ever skiing holiday without his mum.

Max is a really lovely boy,

but he's very high maintenance, he's very demanding

and he doesn't seem to be changing as he's getting older.

Max works as a part-time ski instructor and club promoter.

He still lives at home with mum Suzanne and sister Ella.

I do like living at home, yeah, cos I'm a bit of a mummy's boy.

She does my washing, she does my cleaning, she cooks me dinner.

I'd like to move out, but maybe when I'm a little bit older.

If Max could have somebody dress him, he would have me dress him.

Because that boy will do as little as possible.

She's more of a servant than a slave, my mum.

Max's world was turned upside-down when at 16 he lost his dad.

Max, Ella and I are a really, really close family.

Unfortunately, they lost their dad just over three years ago.

So I think that has really drawn us closer together as a family.

And I know that Max is quite a mummy's boy deep down,

and so I think he finds comfort in me being around.

So, unbeknown to mummy's boy Max,

mum Suzanne will be gate-crashing his first ever lads' skiing holiday

to find out how he'll cope without her.

I think that he should stand up on his own two feet a little bit more.

Joining Max on his Alpine adventure are two of his closest mates,

fellow ski instructor Josh...

As soon as I could walk I was put on skis, so it kind of came naturally.

I don't know anything else about it. I don't even know how to ski.

Max can be quite controlling and quite bossy, so it's going to be interesting

to see with Josh and Matt

if they just go along with him or they ignore him.

But it's hard to ignore Max.

My mates would probably say that I'm quite vain.

I just like being in the spotlight, really.

Who wouldn't enjoy people loving you, I suppose?

And he's as particular about his looks as he is his nights out.

I don't think I've ever seen Max in a club with a pint of beer.

It'll always be a top-quality bottle of champagne or something,

which he's gone and forked out a couple of hundred quid for

and I'll be sitting there with a pint of whatever, £3.50.

It just shows the type of person he is. In a good way, though.

to study fashion design at Manchester Met University...

It's all about living in minus, being a student.

By spending all her cash on booze,

Daryl's broken one of her parents' golden rules.

I've probably got about £50 left in my overdraft now

to last me until my loan comes in. So if I get that out

and then just grovel to Mum and Dad when I get home for some money.

Daryl might be all about living in the moment, but having called time on the drinking,

I've always been interested in the most expensive cars

and the most expensive champagne,

and the most expensive clothes. I don't know why, I just have.

And I suppose the main thought that pops into my head all the time

is probably what I'm going to do with my future

and how life's going to pan out.

Cos I've had to grow up quick.

I mean, obviously, my dad died three years ago, I was 16, just turned 16.

And it just made me think, like,

you don't live forever and you do only have one life,

so I do care about my future and I want to be somewhere.

I want to be someone.

Now at 10pm, the boys are flagging.

Next morning at their hotel,

the parents are bracing themselves

for another dose of their children's exploits.

First, Derek and Jackie,

who are already worried about Daryl's boozing.

I think she's drinking to excess, but that's her choice.

I want her to live her own life

and learn by mistakes that she makes through life.

To my name right now, I have about six euros

and we're only on day three.

Good job I bought my bank card cos I need to get some more money out.

Then just grovel to Mum and Dad when I get home for some money.

She'll get a shock when she comes home. I'm not giving her bugger-all.

She'll have to grovel really well.

And I try and make sure that Daryl does. It's hard enough to earn it,

The main thought that pops into my head all the time

is probably what I'm going to do with my future

and how life's going to pan out.

Cos I've had to grow up quick.

I mean, obviously, my dad died three years ago.

you don't live forever and you do only have one life,

so I do care about my future and I want to be somewhere.

I want to be someone.

He was 16 and he gave a speech at his own father's funeral,

which was absolutely incredible.

And I was so, so proud of that boy.

Daryl's first lesson ends in a trip to the medical centre.

So I was coming down at such a speed, I stacked it,

-but my board flipped and my knee just crunched.

And, er, yeah, it was so painful.

So painful!

It's been a long day.

In the end, I thought I could snowboard pretty well,

but it turns out I can't,

cos I'm now currently sat in the med centre, having X-rays

for ligament damage to my knee.

I give her a prescription for painkillers,

tablets for the inflammation, a support for your knee.

-Yeah.

-And when you go back home, you will see a physiotherapist.

-OK.

And no skiing.

Suffering a sprained knee and ligament damage,

Daryl prescribes her own medication.

Vodka is the only cure,

so we're going to go home after the med centre.

We're going to shower up, polish up

and just go out and have a good night.

But let's get dressed and head out.

The boys are also planning a big one - but first, dinner.

That chicken's got blood in it, is that chicken?

Yeah, of course it is, don't worry.

But dinner's not quite up to the standard for mummy's boy Max.

Josh, don't caramelise the onions.

-Yeah.

-I don't like caramelised onions.

-You don't like cooked onions?

-You can fry them,

but don't let them get caramelised cos it tastes disgusting.

cos I haven't got experience in cooking dinner,

Across town, Daryl's injured knee hasn't dampened her party spirit.

It's all right, it's not too bad.

It's a bit painful, but the vodka will kill it off.

And we've just made up four cheeky little vodka and tropical juices.

I'm a bit scared. I've just had, like, five drinks in a row.

Bolt down and we're all going to go out.

Who wants to take me home when I'm on the floor?

Despite her best intentions, her injury is slowing her down.

Having taken a taxi to a different resort, the boys finally find their perfect place to party.

But, back in Tignes, injured Daryl is struggling to keep up.

And that club was too busy that we couldn't dance

because my knee is in agony.

In a few days, Daryl will head back to uni,

so she's started thinking about her life back home.

None of my family members have been to uni before,

so, er, my parents are really proud, which I'm glad.

Like, I want to do them proud

and uni has definitely, like, brought the best side out of me.

So I go out a lot more and I drink a lot more,

so it's a win-win situation.

And they're even making friends.

It might have taken a week, but Max is finally in the spotlight.

This is the best night we've had by far.

that's what I always tell my kids.

We all tell our kids that we want the best for them and

we want them to do better than us.

My favourite terminology is that

I'm a ladder and you step on me to get higher in life.

And if the kids can do that,

then, my time on this planet has been well used.

But I'm not lazy, I just trust Josh to cook.

He seems like he knows what he's doing.

Max always says that, "You enjoy doing it."

Max will have buttered Josh up to say, "You're the best one that can cook,

If he can find the easy way out, he'll get somebody else to do it.

He does probably have quite an easy life at home,

so when he does live on his own he's going to live in the real world

and he's going to get a bit of a shock.

It was really good to see Max having a good time.

I knew that he'd do that on his last night.

And the fact that he was dancing with a more mature lady in the club

is just typical of Max.

I'm really pleased, I think they've ended on a great high.

On the mountain, Max is enjoying the final moments of his holiday.

It's been an emotional week for mum Suzanne.

And after all the spying, there's one big change she wants to make.

Do you know, looking back, I think I've definitely indulged Max.

Max needs to learn a few more housekeeping skills,

so that when he does go out there and live on his own,

We were very upset when you hurt yourself, and we both were when we saw that.
