Us Brits are among the fattest in the world.

0:00:020:00:04

Run for the Nando's!

0:00:040:00:06

It's a national crisis,

0:00:060:00:08

and for some, it's a matter of life or death.

0:00:080:00:11

There is no hope. There is no hope for him.

0:00:110:00:13

If she carries on, she will die young.

0:00:130:00:17

Welcome to a super-size summer camp

0:00:170:00:19

that claims to have the answers to tackling the obesity epidemic...

0:00:190:00:23

Diets and boot camps don't work, because we're forcing something

0:00:230:00:27

on somebody that they may not be ready for.

0:00:270:00:29

..but its methods are controversial.

0:00:290:00:31

Nice big, healthy lunch?

0:00:310:00:33

Oh, yeah...

0:00:330:00:34

The kids dine out on fast food.

0:00:340:00:35

-No-one's being greedy, Jordan.

-I'm not being greedy!

0:00:370:00:39

-Two bits of milk? Would you drink that?

-Yeah, that's fine!

0:00:390:00:42

Chips and pizza are on the menu.

0:00:420:00:44

My first impressions of the food -

0:00:440:00:47

I would like more, obviously.

0:00:470:00:50

That's why I'm here!

0:00:500:00:51

And the staff are barely older than the campers themselves.

0:00:510:00:55

Did anyone play with their Barbies when they were little?

0:00:550:00:57

They're ridiculous.

0:00:570:00:58

They don't have a clue. I'm telling you, don't have a clue.

0:00:580:01:01

For some campers, it'll be the longest five weeks of their lives...

0:01:010:01:04

It's so hard!

0:01:040:01:05

..but for others, it's life-changing.

0:01:050:01:07

CHEERING

0:01:070:01:10

Does this radical approach work?

0:01:100:01:12

Keep going!

0:01:120:01:13

And is this really the answer to teenage obesity?

0:01:130:01:16

What a waste of effort and time.

0:01:160:01:18

Our camp gets results.

0:01:180:01:20

I'm going to go with the chips and a burger.

0:01:200:01:23

Get that belly moving up and down!

0:01:230:01:25

Jiggle, jiggle, jiggle, jiggle...

0:01:250:01:27

It's week one at Europe's only residential weight loss

0:01:320:01:35

camp for kids.

0:01:350:01:37

So, each day, we're doing loads of exercise.

0:01:390:01:42

I think football is OK, but it's not my favourite.

0:01:420:01:47

I prefer eating.

0:01:470:01:48

That's a sport.

0:01:490:01:51

That is a sport, actually!

0:01:510:01:53

-In America!

-SHE LAUGHS

0:01:530:01:55

Come on, Mia!

0:01:550:01:56

15-year-old Katie from Surrey weighs 17 1/2 stone.

0:01:560:02:01

Katie is naturally lazy.

0:02:020:02:04

She will quite often find an excuse

0:02:040:02:07

for me to pick her up.

0:02:070:02:09

She's got too many bags or she needs the toilet.

0:02:090:02:13

There's always something.

0:02:130:02:14

THEY SHOUT

0:02:150:02:17

Katie's battle to lose weight has been a long-standing family issue.

0:02:170:02:21

And it's why she's joining 85 other teenagers for five weeks

0:02:210:02:25

to battle the problem.

0:02:250:02:26

Katie has always been under the dietician at Kingston Hospital

0:02:270:02:33

from the age of two.

0:02:330:02:34

In fact, I think she is probably their longest serving patient.

0:02:340:02:39

When she went to a party as a toddler, the other children would

0:02:400:02:44

go off and play after tea, whereas she never seemed to feel full.

0:02:440:02:48

I guess, like, all my life, I don't know what it's like to be thin.

0:02:490:02:54

As well as overeating at mealtimes, Kitty is a regular snacker.

0:02:550:03:00

I definitely have a little, like...

0:03:000:03:02

an addictive personality, definitely.

0:03:020:03:04

I like bread wraps, pitta, anything like that.

0:03:040:03:08

I try and have healthy muesli bars.

0:03:080:03:11

I sometimes find those under the bed.

0:03:110:03:13

You know, she's constantly wanting to satisfy her sugar craving, I suppose.

0:03:130:03:18

This is my, like, inspiration board.

0:03:180:03:21

Er...I don't really use it that much.

0:03:210:03:24

There was a couple of days where I was like, "Yeah, let's lose weight,"

0:03:240:03:28

and then it sort of ran out, but hopefully, yeah,

0:03:280:03:30

I'll be able to use it after camp to motivate me.

0:03:300:03:33

Katie has set herself the goal of losing a stone

0:03:340:03:37

over the five-week camp.

0:03:370:03:39

If she's going to meet this target,

0:03:390:03:41

she needs to change her habits and thinking.

0:03:410:03:44

My first impressions of the food -

0:03:440:03:47

I would like more, obviously.

0:03:470:03:50

-That's why I'm here! But...

-THEY LAUGH

0:03:500:03:53

But... Yeah, it's good.

0:03:530:03:55

KATIE LAUGHS

0:03:570:04:00

It's the end of week one, and the campers' first big challenge -

0:04:010:04:05

a two-mile run.

0:04:050:04:07

Are you ready?

0:04:070:04:08

CHEERING

0:04:080:04:09

It's the benchmark used to monitor progress each week.

0:04:090:04:13

We've got the two-mile run to do.

0:04:130:04:15

Well, "run"/walk.

0:04:150:04:18

Every camper's run is timed, and each week the aim is to beat that time.

0:04:180:04:21

Three, two, one, go!

0:04:210:04:25

Oh, yeah, I'm running...

0:04:260:04:28

Seriously, I'm so out of breath, and I've literally done like one metre.

0:04:310:04:34

We go harder, we go harder now!

0:04:340:04:37

For Katie and the other campers,

0:04:370:04:39

every day of the next five weeks will follow the same pattern.

0:04:390:04:43

Structure is critical,

0:04:430:04:45

and forming habits that are positive is critical.

0:04:450:04:50

Professor Paul Gately, a leading childhood obesity expert,

0:04:500:04:53

co-founded the camp with Leeds Beckett University 16 years ago.

0:04:530:04:57

The way the day works, you have three activity periods

0:04:590:05:02

in the morning which can be from educational experiences...

0:05:020:05:04

This week, we're going to be talking about the media and body image.

0:05:040:05:07

..to, you know, exercise, sport.

0:05:070:05:09

Come on, boys! Race each other, race each other all the way!

0:05:090:05:12

So, in the afternoon, there's lots of physical activities.

0:05:120:05:16

Continuous hooks! Left! Right!

0:05:160:05:18

That's it!

0:05:180:05:19

Till I say stop, keep going!

0:05:190:05:20

The early days of our programme are about building their fitness up slowly.

0:05:200:05:24

Come on, fight it!

0:05:240:05:25

Come on, mind over matter!

0:05:250:05:26

And what we see is a sort of slow increase in their fitness.

0:05:260:05:30

Building them up to enable them to be successful

0:05:300:05:33

when they return home.

0:05:330:05:34

Run it for your boyfriend.

0:05:340:05:36

The five-week camp costs over £4,000.

0:05:380:05:41

Some are funded by the NHS or local authorities.

0:05:410:05:44

But Katie's family have paid the bill themselves.

0:05:450:05:49

My husband and I were sort of at the end of our tether with it all.

0:05:490:05:53

I gave her the brochure, and she was furious.

0:05:530:05:55

She didn't speak to me for the rest of the day.

0:05:550:05:57

I'm glad we don't have to run, cos at school, we always do.

0:05:570:06:02

So walking is a lot easier.

0:06:020:06:05

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:06:070:06:10

-If we complete this, we should be allowed the Wi-Fi password.

-Oh!

0:06:100:06:14

I've got a really bad stitch!

0:06:140:06:17

It's like someone's stabbed me.

0:06:170:06:19

I'm not running up this.

0:06:190:06:21

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:06:210:06:23

It takes Katie 36 minutes to complete the two-mile run.

0:06:250:06:28

I'm quite lazy.

0:06:290:06:31

I mean, I shower and everything, but, like, just relax on the sofa.

0:06:310:06:36

I don't do much exercise.

0:06:360:06:39

A lot of people describe her as happy, funny, very friendly,

0:06:400:06:46

and I don't always see that nice, funny side of her, which is

0:06:460:06:49

quite sad, really.

0:06:490:06:50

KATIE LAUGHS

0:06:530:06:55

Obviously I'm not happy all the time.

0:06:550:06:57

I used to have breakdowns about my weight a lot,

0:06:570:07:01

but, yeah, I'd say there is like a subconscious armour that I have.

0:07:010:07:06

I'm quite sensitive.

0:07:070:07:08

I'm not really that body confident.

0:07:110:07:13

Like, people who don't know me obviously judge me

0:07:130:07:15

more on looks, because everyone is judged on looks, like,

0:07:150:07:20

first appearance and stuff, so...yeah.

0:07:200:07:23

WHISTLE BLOWS

0:07:280:07:30

Come on, nice and quick! From your place, nice quick movements!

0:07:300:07:32

Most of the staff are students with a background in sports science,

0:07:320:07:36

nutrition, psychology or education.

0:07:360:07:39

We are not here for ourselves.

0:07:410:07:42

We really are invested in these kids emotionally.

0:07:420:07:46

It is a pleasure just seeing them change just so much

0:07:460:07:49

over the course of the term.

0:07:490:07:52

For most of the activities in camp, boys and girls work in separate groups.

0:07:520:07:56

We want kids to develop social skills,

0:07:560:07:59

so we've put them in their own age and gender groups

0:07:590:08:02

so they can build relationships and develop their sort of social

0:08:020:08:05

skills to be more successful when they return home.

0:08:050:08:08

14-year-old Lana weighs 20st.

0:08:110:08:14

So bored...

0:08:140:08:15

She's come with her 12-year-old sister, Alicia,

0:08:150:08:18

but a few days in, and she's struggling to make friends.

0:08:180:08:21

Lana arrived with quite low self-esteem.

0:08:230:08:26

I think she thought, you know, "I'm the biggest,"

0:08:260:08:30

and, "I'm different to everyone else," and things.

0:08:300:08:33

Do you want to go out to get some air or go for a walk?

0:08:330:08:36

Come on, we'll go for a walk.

0:08:360:08:37

She feels a lot of people are talking about her today.

0:08:380:08:41

They're not. They're not at all.

0:08:440:08:46

They're not.

0:08:460:08:47

It's so hard!

0:08:480:08:49

When you get to that, you need to come and talk to us staff, OK?

0:08:500:08:54

And then so we can take you away from the situation,

0:08:540:08:57

we can chat to you.

0:08:570:08:59

I think there's just miscommunication.

0:08:590:09:01

Do you want to go back in or do you just want a breather?

0:09:030:09:06

Just want a breather? OK.

0:09:070:09:09

Don't get upset.

0:09:110:09:12

I know they've called me stuff, but I just choose to put it in a box,

0:09:120:09:16

lock it up and not think about it.

0:09:160:09:18

Because if I start thinking about it, I'll get really depressed.

0:09:190:09:23

She'd rather risk getting run over by running across the road

0:09:250:09:30

to get away from kids than to face them.

0:09:300:09:32

Lana has had a long history of bullying at school.

0:09:350:09:38

They used to tease me about my weight,

0:09:380:09:40

and then they teased me about my name.

0:09:400:09:43

What it is backwards.

0:09:440:09:46

They bit her, and spat at her and called her names.

0:09:470:09:50

You just wish more...for your kids...you know.

0:09:500:09:56

They made up a rhyme.

0:10:040:10:07

She's big, she's fat, she bounces on the ground,

0:10:070:10:10

it's Lana.

0:10:100:10:12

Sometimes I just walk away, but then they all start chanting it

0:10:130:10:18

and it gets louder and louder.

0:10:180:10:21

SHE SOBS

0:10:210:10:23

I...

0:10:250:10:26

I stay home because...

0:10:260:10:28

I just don't want to hear that.

0:10:310:10:34

Every year she got older, she put a stone on.

0:10:390:10:43

So, like when she were two, she was 2st.

0:10:430:10:46

When she was three, she was 3st, and so on.

0:10:460:10:48

And then it just ballooned out of control.

0:10:480:10:52

We did all sorts of things to try and help her lose weight.

0:10:520:10:57

And extreme of padlocking the kitchen.

0:10:570:11:01

She has actually eaten raw sausage, dried pasta.

0:11:010:11:05

Once I saw a half-eaten tins of corned beef.

0:11:050:11:09

It looked she'd just been,

0:11:090:11:10

like, getting at the meat with just her fingers.

0:11:100:11:14

That's not normal behaviour.

0:11:140:11:16

It's the start of week two

0:11:220:11:24

and there is a weigh-in to measure campers' progress.

0:11:240:11:27

-You are 14, is that right?

-Yes.

0:11:270:11:29

The kids that come to camp will all lose weight.

0:11:320:11:35

Which is due to the calorie-controlled diet

0:11:350:11:37

and the amount of exercise we do each day.

0:11:370:11:39

But they have to still really push themselves

0:11:390:11:42

to get the most out of the programme.

0:11:420:11:44

It is really important for them to see their progress and also it shows

0:11:440:11:47

that the hard work they are putting in in their sessions is paying off.

0:11:470:11:50

Do you want to step off for me? Step off a moment, sorry.

0:11:500:11:54

But Lana has only lost one pound.

0:11:540:11:56

We are really concerned with Lana's weight loss this week.

0:11:560:11:59

We did expect her to lose quite a bit more than what she did.

0:11:590:12:02

At the moment, we are

0:12:020:12:03

not entirely sure the reason why she did not lose as much.

0:12:030:12:06

But it could be down to her not pushing herself enough

0:12:060:12:09

during the physical activity sessions.

0:12:090:12:11

For many of our parents, they have weight problems themselves

0:12:150:12:17

and what they are trying to do is not let their child

0:12:170:12:20

go down the journey that they have been on.

0:12:200:12:22

At home, Lana and her sister Alisha have a lot of responsibility.

0:12:250:12:29

As young carers at home, we cook, clean...

0:12:300:12:35

Help my mum in the shower.

0:12:350:12:38

Help her out. Help clean her. And do the washing up.

0:12:380:12:42

Ready?

0:12:420:12:43

I'm very blessed to have two girls what like...

0:12:450:12:48

not only like cooking,

0:12:480:12:51

but want to learn how to cook.

0:12:510:12:53

When she was really young, she was outgoing, she was bubbly.

0:12:550:12:59

And then it started turning.

0:12:590:13:01

She shut herself off from everything.

0:13:010:13:05

Because of Lana's disappointing weight loss,

0:13:070:13:09

staff member Pippa intervenes.

0:13:090:13:12

Would you like to set some goals together?

0:13:120:13:14

So maybe, you know, I think...

0:13:140:13:17

Do you know what your best score is?

0:13:170:13:19

-I never asked.

-You never asked. I think it's...

0:13:190:13:22

around the 40 minutes.

0:13:220:13:23

So we could try and do around 30.

0:13:230:13:26

We could try and aim for a continuous weight loss

0:13:260:13:29

of maybe at least three pounds.

0:13:290:13:31

Because what did you set your goal weight as?

0:13:310:13:33

I don't know.

0:13:340:13:36

We can like set real goals in that and then, you know,

0:13:360:13:40

you can see if you do accomplish them.

0:13:400:13:42

-And then that will really build up your confidence.

-Yeah.

0:13:420:13:45

-That would be good.

-Yes.

-Cool.

0:13:450:13:48

A target or a goal is only worthwhile

0:13:480:13:50

if you feel you can achieve it.

0:13:500:13:51

Given her weight, she will have been set many goals and targets before

0:13:510:13:55

that she will have only ever viewed as she has failed on.

0:13:550:13:58

It will be fun. It's a new experience.

0:13:580:14:01

You are challenging yourself here on camp and that is another challenge.

0:14:010:14:04

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

0:14:040:14:06

Over in the boys' dorm,

0:14:080:14:09

the weigh-in has revealed dramatic results for 15-year-old Adam.

0:14:090:14:13

He came to camp weighing 20st and in just one week,

0:14:130:14:17

he has lost over half a stone.

0:14:170:14:18

He may be the biggest loser among the boys, but he is not happy.

0:14:180:14:23

I've told them, over ten times, that I wanted to go over this past week.

0:14:230:14:27

But every time I bring it up, they say, well,

0:14:270:14:30

management is getting onto it.

0:14:300:14:33

He is so determined to go that he has already packed his bags.

0:14:330:14:37

Hello, is that Adam's mum?

0:14:370:14:38

-It is.

-He has lost quite a bit of weight this morning from monitoring,

0:14:380:14:44

so what is your sort of thinking behind him staying or going?

0:14:440:14:49

I want him to stay. I want him to stay. Because of his predicament.

0:14:490:14:52

Right, OK.

0:14:520:14:53

So you are happy for us just to try and keep him on site

0:14:530:14:56

-and encourage him to get involved in sessions?

-Yeah, yes.

-Right.

0:14:560:15:00

-Thank you.

-Cheers, bye.

-Bye.

0:15:000:15:02

I'm hoping today,

0:15:040:15:05

the fact that he has found out that he has lost some weight,

0:15:050:15:09

that it will give him that motivation to continue

0:15:090:15:11

and stay here.

0:15:110:15:12

I do think Adam enjoys it.

0:15:140:15:16

He has just been homesick.

0:15:160:15:19

He needs to get as much out of this as he can.

0:15:190:15:22

We're trying all to get across

0:15:220:15:24

that he needs the right mentality for life.

0:15:240:15:27

We do think that if he did see the process through,

0:15:270:15:30

his life will change.

0:15:300:15:32

Hopefully, by a great deal.

0:15:320:15:35

But even a slight change is a very big step for these guys.

0:15:350:15:39

I understand it's hard for him, but...

0:15:420:15:45

Nobody is going to solve your problems but you.

0:15:450:15:49

He doesn't know how to mix in society.

0:15:490:15:52

And I think that is a lot of his problems.

0:15:520:15:55

I wake up, like, at eight o'clock at night

0:15:550:15:58

and I'm sort of awake all night.

0:15:580:15:59

Where he wakes me up between three and four every morning.

0:15:590:16:02

Through screaming at his PlayStation.

0:16:030:16:06

In fact, I don't see him.

0:16:060:16:08

He comes out of his bedroom maybe once a day to collect his takeaway.

0:16:090:16:14

And that's about it.

0:16:160:16:18

I was about ten when I started putting on weight.

0:16:180:16:21

I eat just because it's... I get bored a lot,

0:16:210:16:24

just sitting doing nothing.

0:16:240:16:27

When he was two years old, if I wouldn't buy him sweets,

0:16:270:16:31

he used to grab me by the hair and drag me down on the floor

0:16:310:16:33

and kick hell out of me.

0:16:330:16:35

Adam's life revolves around pizza takeaways every day.

0:16:350:16:38

And Coke.

0:16:380:16:40

He drinks gallons of the stuff,

0:16:400:16:42

up to six litres a day.

0:16:420:16:44

When it does, I don't know how I will deal with it,

0:16:440:16:47

but, yeah, he's going to die.

0:16:470:16:49

Through obesity.

0:16:490:16:50

A few days later, and Adam is missing.

0:16:560:16:58

A boy has disappeared. We don't know where he has gone.

0:17:020:17:04

He was there for breakfast and for lunch and then he disappeared.

0:17:040:17:09

Actually quite scary.

0:17:090:17:10

On average, we will get

0:17:110:17:14

two, maybe three campers running away each year.

0:17:140:17:17

Just think, if you were a child, where would you go?

0:17:170:17:21

'Most of the time, they don't actually leave the campsite.'

0:17:210:17:24

They are usually just wandering around the fields,

0:17:240:17:26

or they've gone back to the dorm.

0:17:260:17:28

I just want to say, to start off,

0:17:280:17:29

I don't want you to be alarmed or worried, but we have just done

0:17:290:17:32

a count with the campers and Adam is not currently in the session.

0:17:320:17:36

He would only have been missing 20 minutes,

0:17:360:17:39

so he can't have got too far.

0:17:390:17:40

As his mother, do you think

0:17:410:17:43

he is the sort of person who would have gone?

0:17:430:17:45

OK, then. So we do think there is a potential

0:17:450:17:48

he may have left the site.

0:17:480:17:49

INDISTINCT

0:17:490:17:51

It really does kind of, bring it home,

0:17:550:17:57

that you are really doing a serious job here

0:17:570:18:00

and you are working with kids, vulnerable kids.

0:18:000:18:02

And you are responsible for them.

0:18:020:18:03

-SAT NAV:

-'Turn left.'

-"Turn..." What are you on about?

-Left.

0:18:030:18:08

I don't think he will have gone this far.

0:18:090:18:11

We are on our way back to camp now.

0:18:120:18:15

After an hour of searching, Adam is located back at home.

0:18:150:18:20

I saw him pull up in a taxi

0:18:200:18:21

and my first reaction was relief that he was safe.

0:18:210:18:26

But then, obviously, I did what mummies do.

0:18:260:18:30

And gave him what for, for walking out.

0:18:300:18:32

It's not a pleasant place to be when you're getting babied all the time.

0:18:340:18:38

That's what I thought of it. It is like a prison.

0:18:380:18:40

I would say it's for mostly younger kids than older kids.

0:18:430:18:46

I would love him to sort his life out.

0:18:480:18:50

Something has to click in his brain.

0:18:500:18:53

It's down to him, nobody else. He has got all the knowledge.

0:18:530:18:56

He's just not got the motivation to use it.

0:18:570:19:00

I think some of the kids that we have had,

0:19:020:19:04

we couldn't get through to.

0:19:040:19:06

They were either too far gone or they needed a lot more help

0:19:060:19:09

than we can offer in five weeks.

0:19:090:19:11

And that does frustrate us, sometimes.

0:19:120:19:14

Adam decided not to return to camp.

0:19:170:19:19

There is an obesity epidemic in this country.

0:19:200:19:24

It is two people chucking crap at their kids, because it's cheap.

0:19:240:19:28

You know that people who watch this will blame the parents.

0:19:290:19:32

What do you say to them?

0:19:320:19:34

Well, I...

0:19:360:19:38

When I look at...

0:19:380:19:39

You know, I've done it myself, I've looked at other overweight children

0:19:390:19:42

and thought, you know, what is that mother doing?

0:19:420:19:44

Why is she not doing something about it?

0:19:440:19:47

You know, it's easy to judge.

0:19:470:19:49

It's not as though I haven't tried everything.

0:19:490:19:52

And now I know just how difficult it is.

0:19:520:19:55

I wish I could have a magic wand and, you know, help her.

0:19:550:20:00

But at the end of the day, Lana has got to meet me halfway.

0:20:000:20:04

I'm lost.

0:20:040:20:06

Where Adam is concerned, I'm lost.

0:20:060:20:08

Don't know what to do.

0:20:080:20:09

Life is harder for bigger people.

0:20:110:20:13

End of.

0:20:130:20:14

It's the end of week two.

0:20:180:20:20

Katie is taking part in a session about body image

0:20:200:20:23

led by staff member Nicola.

0:20:230:20:26

So, we've got all the girls together, think good, feel good.

0:20:260:20:29

These sessions are devised to talk about self-esteem

0:20:290:20:32

and body confidence.

0:20:320:20:33

Two things that everyone growing up, everyone as adults, struggles with.

0:20:330:20:37

I'm a 15-year-old obese girl.

0:20:370:20:40

SHE LAUGHS

0:20:400:20:42

It's not even funny. I don't know why I'm laughing.

0:20:420:20:44

It is funny for me.

0:20:440:20:46

SHE GROANS

0:20:460:20:47

Think good, feel good is about talking, it's about sharing,

0:20:470:20:51

it's about attitudinal change in order that they then start to

0:20:510:20:54

think differently and feel differently.

0:20:540:20:57

And sometimes, when we get bullied, bullies will say something to us

0:20:570:21:01

and we have got our friends saying complete opposite things.

0:21:010:21:04

Saying lovely things about us.

0:21:040:21:06

Do we just end up sometimes going home

0:21:060:21:07

and thinking about the mean things someone said about us?

0:21:070:21:10

Always.

0:21:100:21:11

A lot of people came and their identity was, I am fat.

0:21:110:21:15

And that was so sad to see.

0:21:150:21:16

They need to change their attitudes.

0:21:160:21:19

Believe in themselves and build up their confidence

0:21:190:21:22

and that is actually much harder than just losing weight.

0:21:220:21:25

At home, Katie's parents have tried to help her lose weight

0:21:270:21:31

but so far, nothing has worked.

0:21:310:21:33

They have tried, like, locking away all the food.

0:21:330:21:36

Like, I was really angry... And they drove me

0:21:360:21:39

to school so I couldn't get anything on the way to school.

0:21:390:21:41

Took all my money away. But I just found ways around it.

0:21:410:21:45

Like just borrowing money from my friends and stuff.

0:21:450:21:47

It made life at home really, really hard.

0:21:470:21:50

Obviously, she wants the best for me, but it is sacrificing

0:21:510:21:54

our relationship together.

0:21:540:21:56

Katie is offered a one-to-one session

0:21:590:22:01

to discuss some of the issues she has had with her mum.

0:22:010:22:04

I don't even understand myself.

0:22:040:22:06

I don't like it if she praises me for doing exercise,

0:22:060:22:09

but then if she doesn't notice, then that makes me really upset.

0:22:090:22:13

-And then...

-LAUGHS

0:22:130:22:15

..I hate it when she like mentions weight or anything. I don't...

0:22:150:22:19

I feel as though... I said this, I feel as though if I lived on my own,

0:22:190:22:23

I would be able to do a lot better.

0:22:230:22:26

I don't know what's wrong with me.

0:22:260:22:28

I just don't like the topic at all...

0:22:280:22:29

You don't like to discuss it at all.

0:22:290:22:31

I was going to say, it sounds as though it might actually be

0:22:310:22:34

a self-esteem thing because, if she is to praise you,

0:22:340:22:38

it means that it is drawing attention to what you've done.

0:22:380:22:43

And sometimes you can then feel pressured,

0:22:430:22:45

now I feel like I need to do it more,

0:22:450:22:47

or you have pointed out that I wasn't doing it before.

0:22:470:22:49

-There are so many things that...

-Yeah.

0:22:490:22:51

-..start to go around your head.

-Yeah, it's weird.

0:22:510:22:53

'A lot of our campers do have really low self-esteem.

0:22:530:22:56

'And that is why we need to pay as much attention to it as possible.'

0:22:560:23:00

To try to help them to learn these different ways so that

0:23:000:23:02

when they go home, they can continue those positive thinking skills.

0:23:020:23:06

-Good.

-Thank you.

0:23:060:23:07

At camp, all meals are portion-controlled

0:23:130:23:16

and calories allocated according to a camper's age, height and weight.

0:23:160:23:21

-PAUL GATELY:

-It's not counting calories,

0:23:210:23:23

but it is a way of helping them understand portions,

0:23:230:23:25

understand meals, understand snacking.

0:23:250:23:27

So that they are more equipped when they return home.

0:23:270:23:30

Some of the menu choices may seem surprising.

0:23:300:23:33

On a Sunday, we have a Sunday roast.

0:23:330:23:34

It's pizza, it's jacket potatoes, sandwiches, lasagne...

0:23:340:23:38

They give us, like, pizza. Why would you give us dough?

0:23:380:23:41

Dough is not good for you, do you know what I mean?

0:23:410:23:43

As I walked in, I thought,

0:23:430:23:44

God, I hope I don't have to eat rabbit food!

0:23:440:23:46

It would be unrealistic for them to go home and live off salad.

0:23:460:23:50

-PAUL:

-What we are trying to do is work with those children

0:23:500:23:53

so they lose weight at a very prescribed rate.

0:23:530:23:56

We are not driven by the latest diet trend.

0:23:560:24:00

We are driven by what the evidence gives us best results.

0:24:000:24:04

Complex carbohydrates in a range of foods are critical.

0:24:040:24:07

We also know that we want to reduce the fat content

0:24:070:24:10

and we want to maintain a good protein content. So that is it.

0:24:100:24:13

Go, boys, filing out.

0:24:130:24:15

Halfway through camp

0:24:150:24:17

and the kids are about to make plans for lunch at a very unexpected venue.

0:24:170:24:21

So, you know you are going McDonalds on Wednesday at the trip.

0:24:210:24:25

So today's session is based on you planning out what you are allowed,

0:24:250:24:29

based on calories.

0:24:290:24:30

Any time I have ever told a friend they go to McDonald's,

0:24:300:24:33

it's like, "What on earth? Like, how do you do that?"

0:24:330:24:37

But the point of camp is it is teaching them

0:24:370:24:38

a realistic healthy lifestyle.

0:24:380:24:41

We can't say, never have fast food again. That is not realistic.

0:24:410:24:44

They will carry on these behaviours.

0:24:440:24:47

-Amy, guess what? Guess what?

-What?

0:24:470:24:50

There is more sugar in a mayo chicken than in a fruit shoot.

0:24:500:24:53

THEY CHUCKLE

0:24:550:24:56

Right! 3.2g of sugar in a salad...

0:24:560:25:00

So, instead of saying, "No, don't do it,"

0:25:000:25:03

we'll teach them about the calories within the food,

0:25:030:25:06

how to have a meal within their calorie allowance.

0:25:060:25:09

That works, doesn't it?

0:25:090:25:10

Basically, you can pick anything you want within your calorie map.

0:25:100:25:14

I'd suggest possibly not going for fries,

0:25:140:25:16

because they don't fill you up that long.

0:25:160:25:18

Drinks-wise, I'd stick with zero drinks, or water,

0:25:180:25:21

cos liquid calories are just going to be wasted,

0:25:210:25:24

so I'd try and get as much of your calories from food as possible.

0:25:240:25:28

17-year-old Jordan weighs 18 stone,

0:25:280:25:30

and he's allowed 800 calories for his lunch.

0:25:300:25:34

I wouldn't think you would go to a fast food shop

0:25:340:25:37

and actually get food when you're at, like, a weight loss camp.

0:25:370:25:40

So, it's rare.

0:25:400:25:41

It is a weird feeling, you know,

0:25:430:25:44

taking them round to an outlet like McDonald's

0:25:440:25:48

when it's a health-based camp.

0:25:480:25:50

I got my Berry Burst Iced Fruit Smoothie -

0:25:500:25:55

I got that in a large, but I changed that to a medium,

0:25:550:25:57

and that had less calories in - so I swapped that,

0:25:570:26:01

and now I have enough to get an ice cream,

0:26:010:26:04

so I'm going to write an ice cream down.

0:26:040:26:06

And that's me done.

0:26:060:26:08

Is it just about calories, or is about nutritional content as well?

0:26:080:26:11

It's about nutritional content.

0:26:110:26:13

So, which would be better - ice cream or fruit?

0:26:130:26:15

-Fruit would be better.

-Is that your final answer?

0:26:150:26:18

Right. OK, well done.

0:26:180:26:19

I'm going to change it to fruit.

0:26:190:26:22

I think they should be teaching this in schools,

0:26:220:26:24

because young kids out there don't have a clue what they're eating.

0:26:240:26:27

So, does anyone not want McDonald's,

0:26:270:26:29

and wants the packed lunch that we provide anyway?

0:26:290:26:32

-Aran.

-Aran.

-So, it's just you, Aran, that wants a sandwich?

0:26:320:26:35

OK.

0:26:350:26:36

Out of the boys, only Aran has opted to have a packed lunch instead.

0:26:360:26:41

I think it's all right to have a treat now and then -

0:26:410:26:44

it's just I can't have it as a full-time thing.

0:26:440:26:48

Aran is from Selby, North Yorkshire.

0:26:480:26:51

He's 16, and weighs 20 stone.

0:26:510:26:54

Aran has overeaten for years,

0:26:540:26:57

and breaking that cycle is a battle I've had for years.

0:26:570:27:00

At home I was just stuffing food in,

0:27:010:27:04

and not...I was literally just eating for the sake of eating

0:27:040:27:07

when I weren't even hungry.

0:27:070:27:10

You know, when he's volunteered to make a cup of tea,

0:27:100:27:12

he's going to see what he can get out the fridge.

0:27:120:27:15

Cos he'll say, "Do you want a cup of tea, Mum?"

0:27:150:27:19

He will even take, like, a packet of ham, packet of corned beef,

0:27:190:27:22

any prepacked meats that are in the fridge.

0:27:220:27:25

I hate it when corned beef sticks together.

0:27:250:27:27

Another reason why I came here was because over this last year

0:27:270:27:31

I'd gone through two bed braces - a wooden one and a metal one -

0:27:310:27:36

both broke because of... broke because of my weight.

0:27:360:27:40

Weight has always been a major issue for Aran's family.

0:27:400:27:45

At 16, his sister weighed 34 stone, and underwent gastric bypass surgery.

0:27:460:27:53

She was so poorly at the time,

0:27:550:27:57

we had to consider turning off life support

0:27:570:28:00

after being in and out of intensive care for a few months.

0:28:000:28:03

He saw his sister there, all these wires and tubes and everything,

0:28:030:28:07

and it just totally messed him up.

0:28:070:28:12

She survived,

0:28:120:28:14

but the radical procedure didn't solve her eating disorder.

0:28:140:28:17

What I'm most scared about is if I didn't come here,

0:28:170:28:20

is that I'd turn out like my older sister.

0:28:200:28:22

She went from obese to skinny to anorexic in a short time.

0:28:220:28:27

This summer camp is the last option.

0:28:270:28:29

If he carries on eating like he is,

0:28:290:28:31

that'll probably eventually kill him.

0:28:310:28:34

Camp could be Aran's last chance to avoid surgery -

0:28:340:28:38

but he's low in confidence.

0:28:380:28:40

When I was at school, whenever we played basketball or summat,

0:28:400:28:44

I wouldn't be passed it because of my weight.

0:28:440:28:46

I used to feel quite gutted, and I'd just sit out.

0:28:460:28:49

But then I realised that's not helping me.

0:28:490:28:52

Right, boys, before we start, I'm not having you pick

0:28:550:28:57

and choose the sessions you join in with.

0:28:570:28:59

If you're fit enough to do this one,

0:28:590:29:01

then you're fit enough to do dodge ball. All right?

0:29:010:29:03

I don't want you to say you've got an injury,

0:29:030:29:05

and then ten minutes later you're fit again. If you've got an injury,

0:29:050:29:08

it doesn't cure itself in ten minutes.

0:29:080:29:10

Nice one, pick up the line.

0:29:100:29:12

Can we catch 'em? Can we catch 'em? Do the job for your team.

0:29:120:29:15

Go, go, go!

0:29:150:29:16

Faced with the daily physical demands of camp,

0:29:160:29:19

Aran is taking every opportunity he can to sit things out.

0:29:190:29:23

Obviously, I don't want you run out and...pass out.

0:29:240:29:26

But I think you can give it a go.

0:29:260:29:29

Even just walking's going to be better for you.

0:29:290:29:32

Or a little jog.

0:29:320:29:33

Be ten times better than just sitting down, won't it?

0:29:330:29:36

And everyone will help you out in the activity, all right?

0:29:360:29:41

Good man.

0:29:410:29:43

Aran would sit out of a lot of sessions,

0:29:430:29:45

and you were never sure, 100%, if he's injured,

0:29:450:29:49

or if he's faking it, or what's going on -

0:29:490:29:52

or if he just can't be bothered.

0:29:520:29:54

I feel with Aran it was a little bit of tough love.

0:29:540:29:56

You can give him that time, where you can sit with him

0:29:560:29:58

one-to-one and speak with him,

0:29:580:30:00

but he needs to know that that's not going to fly every session,

0:30:000:30:03

every day.

0:30:030:30:05

It's not just the physical side of camp that Aran is finding difficult.

0:30:060:30:11

I haven't made many friends here.

0:30:110:30:13

I've only made a few.

0:30:130:30:14

-DAWN:

-Aran's very much a loner, very much a hermit.

0:30:160:30:19

He spends all his time in his bedroom.

0:30:190:30:22

He's no self-esteem or self-confidence.

0:30:220:30:25

People, like, give me disgusted looks when I do actually go out.

0:30:250:30:29

Most of the time, if somebody's coming towards me,

0:30:290:30:32

I will literally cross the street,

0:30:320:30:34

put in my headphones, put my hood up, and then I'd cross,

0:30:340:30:37

and I would just walk down the street on the opposite side.

0:30:370:30:41

-SCOTT:

-I think when they first come here, they're very shy people.

0:30:410:30:44

It takes time for them to come out their shells a bit.

0:30:440:30:48

Most of them don't think they're good enough.

0:30:480:30:51

Most really hate themselves.

0:30:510:30:54

-Do you want to change, then?

-I do - I do want to change.

0:30:540:30:58

Staff member Adam has been given the task

0:31:000:31:02

of trying to refocus and motivate Aran.

0:31:020:31:06

There's quite a lot of stuff you can do with a bench, isn't there?

0:31:060:31:10

Sitting, that's one good one.

0:31:100:31:11

I like Aran, he's...he's a cheeky kid.

0:31:110:31:14

Yeah, he's definitely got a sense of humour.

0:31:140:31:16

You can go for, like, a minute. Let's go.

0:31:160:31:18

I-I can't go for a minute.

0:31:180:31:19

Well, try it - just see how long you can go for.

0:31:190:31:21

-I'll time you, all right?

-Can't I just kick the tree, instead?

0:31:210:31:24

Why don't you try this, and we'll see how long you can go for?

0:31:240:31:26

-DAWN:

-He hates walking anywhere.

0:31:260:31:28

He just doesn't like any form of exercise whatsoever,

0:31:280:31:31

and if he can get out of doing it, all the better,

0:31:310:31:34

as far as he's concerned.

0:31:340:31:36

Come on, see if you can go backwards.

0:31:360:31:38

I can't! I can barely walk straight, I can't walk backwards!

0:31:380:31:41

Well, then, give it a go.

0:31:410:31:42

High knees, high knees, high knees.

0:31:440:31:45

-I can't. I'll fall backwards.

-Huh?

0:31:450:31:47

I'm just going to walk backwards.

0:31:470:31:49

-This is what I'm talking about, mate!

-What?

0:31:490:31:51

It's so frustrating - I know you can do it.

0:31:510:31:53

'I reckon he's motivated, and he wants to change,

0:31:530:31:55

'and he wants to get healthier.'

0:31:550:31:56

Do you reckon you're maybe a bit too negative

0:31:560:31:58

about what you can and can't do?

0:31:580:32:00

'He puts himself down a lot, which is really frustrating,'

0:32:000:32:03

cos you know he can do all this stuff, and you see him doing it,

0:32:030:32:06

and five minutes later, he's saying, "No, I can't."

0:32:060:32:09

We know you can do all this stuff.

0:32:090:32:11

So, why do you keep telling yourself you can't do it?

0:32:110:32:13

I just don't know.

0:32:130:32:15

You don't know? So why don't you just do it?

0:32:150:32:17

'I guess the main thing we're trying to change with him

0:32:170:32:19

'is getting him to think, "I can do this, I've already done this,

0:32:190:32:22

' "I know I can do it - let's go do it." '

0:32:220:32:24

I know I have got to work towards it, it's just..

0:32:240:32:27

I know, but think of how you'll be when you finish -

0:32:270:32:29

when you lose weight, and you become healthier, and you, you know,

0:32:290:32:33

you feel more confident and you go outside with your mates, and...

0:32:330:32:37

Mate, you'll be so happy when you get there.

0:32:370:32:41

I'm going to take on board what Adam was saying to me.

0:32:410:32:44

Today, the campers are on their trip to Manchester's Trafford Centre.

0:32:470:32:51

It's a deliberate test for the kids.

0:32:510:32:53

-SINGS:

-Thornton's!

0:32:530:32:55

-NICOLA:

-The environment we live in now

0:32:550:32:57

is setting us up to be unhealthy.

0:32:570:32:59

There's going to be triggers everywhere.

0:32:590:33:01

Oh, so nice not to have to walk.

0:33:010:33:05

There are so many shops within walking distance,

0:33:050:33:07

so many food outlets.

0:33:070:33:09

The world outside is trying to say to you, like,

0:33:090:33:12

"Right, let's see if you can fail."

0:33:120:33:15

The lunch has been paid for by McDonald's.

0:33:150:33:18

To people who say you're sleeping with the enemy

0:33:180:33:20

by taking them to McDonald's, you know, what would you say to them?

0:33:200:33:24

Camp will only be successful if we can give kids the skills

0:33:260:33:30

and strategies to deal with the outside world.

0:33:300:33:33

The outside world is, there are fast food restaurants,

0:33:330:33:36

there are sugar-sweetened beverages,

0:33:360:33:38

and if we don't prepare our kids for that environment,

0:33:380:33:41

we're going to fail them.

0:33:410:33:43

Unlike the other campers,

0:33:430:33:45

Aran chose to have a packed lunch instead of the fast food.

0:33:450:33:48

-So, you're happy you picked that over the McDonald's, yeah?

-Yeah.

0:33:480:33:51

I came here to lose weight.

0:33:510:33:53

McDonald's is just going to put it back on,

0:33:530:33:55

so a sandwich is the healthy option.

0:33:550:33:57

Why's that? Do you just feel better for it, or...?

0:33:570:34:00

-I feel better.

-Yeah?

0:34:000:34:02

-That's a good choice.

-It is. And it's nicer.

-Yeah?

0:34:020:34:06

'Every Wednesday, our trip day, is the chance for us to'

0:34:060:34:10

put into practice what we've learned in the lifestyle sessions.

0:34:100:34:12

So that's a kind of test of self-control.

0:34:120:34:14

It's not a happy meal for Jordan.

0:34:150:34:18

We've got no sugar. We've got no water. We've got no Sprite.

0:34:190:34:24

We've got no salad.

0:34:240:34:26

'I think he felt like he was missing a food item'

0:34:260:34:29

but I cross checked my Excel spreadsheet, cross checked the food

0:34:290:34:32

order at McDonald's, and he had it in front of him.

0:34:320:34:36

Have you got any more milk? I might need one more sugar. Yeah.

0:34:360:34:42

And one more milk.

0:34:420:34:43

-Jordan, what are you doing?

-I'm missing my milk.

0:34:450:34:48

-But you've had your milk in your tea.

-I haven't.

0:34:480:34:50

You've had the same as everybody else. You can't just take it like

0:34:500:34:53

-that. There's milk in your tea.

-It's not. It's black tea.

0:34:530:34:55

-Pass the milk back to me, please.

-Why?

0:34:550:34:57

-Because you have milk in your tea. Now you're being...

-Look...

0:34:570:35:00

-Now you're just being greedy.

-How am I being greedy?

0:35:000:35:02

-You've had...

-Two bits of milk? Would you drink that?

0:35:020:35:04

-I don't drink tea, so no.

-That's it, then. That's it.

0:35:040:35:06

Don't talk to me, please. Don't talk to me.

0:35:060:35:09

Fucking hate it here. It's fucking shit.

0:35:090:35:11

They're ridiculous. They don't have a clue. I'm telling you.

0:35:150:35:18

They don't have a clue.

0:35:180:35:19

'Jordan wanted more milk in his tea.'

0:35:190:35:22

Also he wanted more sugar within his tea as well, which obviously

0:35:220:35:24

is not something that he's allowed because it would take him

0:35:240:35:28

'above the 800 calories that we've allowed for him to have for his lunch.'

0:35:280:35:31

She's so rude. How can she call me greedy? It's just really rude.

0:35:310:35:34

'I reflected a lot on that situation'

0:35:340:35:37

and perhaps how I could have dealt with it better but I still

0:35:370:35:41

stand very strongly with my decision and some people may think it's

0:35:410:35:44

pathetic that all he wanted was an extra sachet of milk but for me it

0:35:440:35:49

was really important that he learns to have discipline and self-control.

0:35:490:35:52

I'd rather go with the chips and a burger.

0:35:520:35:54

I don't feel guilty at all because they gave us

0:35:560:35:59

a certain amount of calories and they obviously do this every

0:35:590:36:03

year and it hasn't made a difference.

0:36:030:36:05

Because I have such an addictive personality I think

0:36:050:36:08

'after here I'm going to have to try and completely avoid all the bad foods

0:36:080:36:12

'cos I think I can easily'

0:36:120:36:14

fall back into my usual routine.

0:36:140:36:17

'It's going to be difficult. The fact that they've had all this control.

0:36:170:36:21

'They've had all of us encouraging them to do the right thing.'

0:36:210:36:24

They now need to do that for themselves.

0:36:240:36:26

After lunch the campers can spend £10 of their own pocket money.

0:36:260:36:31

It's another deliberate temptation.

0:36:320:36:34

Sometimes we have a binge day.

0:36:340:36:37

I bought a pot of Pringles, a pack of cookies and two sausage rolls

0:36:370:36:41

but I'm sharing them with someone else so... I don't know. Yeah.

0:36:410:36:47

I feel as though cos I haven't had one of those days in a while

0:36:470:36:50

and it's about having one of those days

0:36:500:36:53

and then getting back on track cos I don't think you can

0:36:530:36:56

completely avoid those foods at all cos they're there.

0:36:560:37:00

I just feel really guilty now.

0:37:030:37:05

I feel like... I don't know. Really guilty.

0:37:050:37:09

-I don't think I'm going to eat it.

-Shall we literally go and return it?

0:37:090:37:13

I don't think you can return food. I don't have a receipt.

0:37:130:37:16

I'm going to go and ask the security man. Come with me.

0:37:160:37:20

Katie decides to return everything.

0:37:200:37:23

I've never really felt like that before.

0:37:240:37:27

Usually I'm just like, "whatever", but I felt so guilty then.

0:37:270:37:30

With Katie's £10 that she was allowed to spend

0:37:300:37:32

she made some poor food choices.

0:37:320:37:33

'After doing that she had the chance to self reflect'

0:37:330:37:36

and the healthy decision was the one she made.

0:37:530:37:55

Tonight there's a disco.

0:37:570:37:59

A chance for the girls and the boys to socialise with each other.

0:37:590:38:04

I don't know any other time we've really been able to talk

0:38:040:38:07

to them properly.

0:38:070:38:09

I... Yeah, so...

0:38:090:38:11

They don't trust us. They think we're going to get pregnant.

0:38:110:38:15

KATIE LAUGHS

0:38:150:38:16

We're at fat camp. There's not going to be any good-looking boys.

0:38:160:38:21

-It's true.

-Well, let's not be judgmental.

0:38:220:38:27

-I mean...

-You said that.

-We're big too, so...

0:38:270:38:30

Yeah, but still it's true. Everyone says it.

0:38:300:38:33

'Back home I know a few boys did like me

0:38:350:38:38

'but I didn't really take interest'

0:38:380:38:41

in it because I didn't believe it.

0:38:410:38:44

Boys don't look at fat girls. They just think that's minging, don't they?

0:38:440:38:48

If you're really, really big I wouldn't go nowhere near you.

0:38:480:38:51

I think getting a boyfriend is a lot harder when you're heavier

0:38:510:38:55

because everyone is so judgmental of each other.

0:38:550:39:00

'If you're going to have a boyfriend

0:39:000:39:02

you want to one that's going to like you, no matter what.'

0:39:020:39:05

If it's based on looks v friendship then there's no point.

0:39:050:39:09

'I'm not really bothered because I've got GCSEs coming up and things'

0:39:090:39:12

but that would be nice to like, I don't know, be liked.

0:39:120:39:17

MUSIC PLAYS

0:39:180:39:20

For the staff the disco means being extra vigilant.

0:39:260:39:30

'We have something called snog watch so we do actually,'

0:39:310:39:34

the staff are very much on top of seeing what's going on.

0:39:340:39:38

We're on snog alert tonight.

0:39:380:39:40

There's a lot of little young romances going on

0:39:400:39:43

so we're keeping our eye out for that.

0:39:430:39:46

Holding hands - absolutely fine. A hug - absolutely fine.

0:39:460:39:49

But when it starts to progress that's when you start to think,

0:39:490:39:51

"Hang on, we're just going to keep an extra eye on you there."

0:39:510:39:54

And we do know a few girls have a few crushes on some of the boys

0:39:540:39:57

but we're not too sure who that is. So we're keeping an eye out.

0:39:570:40:02

It's actually quite funny, particularly the younger ones.

0:40:030:40:07

In a relationship for about two days then it's over if at that.

0:40:070:40:09

That's like, "Oh, my God, I was in such a long-term relationship. We were together all week."

-INTERVIEWER:

-So how was the disco?

-The disco was rubbish.

0:40:180:40:23

It was very boring.

0:40:240:40:26

We talked to a couple of the boys but...as friends.

0:40:260:40:32

But, like, yeah, it was quite boring.

0:40:320:40:36

It wasn't like a usual party.

0:40:360:40:39

-I don't know.

-INTERVIEWER:

-Why?

0:40:390:40:41

I would say why. Cos it has no alcohol.

0:40:430:40:47

Yeah.

0:40:490:40:51

I'm not going to lie. Any disco without alcohol is not a real disco.

0:40:510:40:55

SHOUTING

0:40:570:40:59

It's the start of week four

0:41:000:41:02

and Lana is beginning to take the exercise sessions more seriously.

0:41:020:41:06

Sit ups, girls. Come on. And off you go, girls. As many as you can.

0:41:080:41:12

You can do it. Keep going. Just work through it.

0:41:120:41:15

Well done. Well done.

0:41:150:41:18

But socially she's still feeling isolated.

0:41:180:41:21

And she's fallen out with her room mate.

0:41:210:41:24

'Sometimes room pairings don't work. It is all pot luck and sometimes'

0:41:270:41:30

there is a clash of personalities.

0:41:300:41:32

'At the moment Lana isn't getting on with Solenn so we're going to

0:41:320:41:36

'move another camper, Destiny, into the room.'

0:41:360:41:38

'My first impression of Destiny'

0:41:400:41:43

is that she is the complete opposite of me.

0:41:430:41:45

'She's a girlie girl.

0:41:450:41:47

She had loads of make up. You look at my side, there's nothing there.

0:41:470:41:53

You look at hers it's just like full.

0:41:530:41:56

When I first started packing I just put my shoes in and

0:41:560:41:59

then I thought, "I've got five pair of shoes already". But it's fine.

0:41:590:42:03

I need lots of stuff.

0:42:030:42:05

'And I've brought enough for about three years. There's too much.'

0:42:050:42:08

I shouldn't have brought all I brought.

0:42:080:42:11

I didn't need it but oh, well, it's done.

0:42:110:42:13

Destiny from Swinton in South Yorkshire is 14 and weighs 13st.

0:42:130:42:18

This will be her third time at camp.

0:42:180:42:21

You used to eat a lot of junk. You weren't educated on food.

0:42:210:42:27

-You were quite chubby there, weren't you?

-Quite? That's being nice.

0:42:270:42:31

In year seven I got bullied ridiculously.

0:42:310:42:34

I've been called all sorts. I'm obese. I'm a pig. I'm disgusting.

0:42:340:42:38

I'm vile. And I just used to go home and cry.

0:42:380:42:41

And my mum would ask what was wrong and I would just say,

0:42:410:42:43

"Nowt, it doesn't matter."

0:42:430:42:45

-Yeah, but you've come a long way since then.

-I know that.

0:42:460:42:49

The reason I'm going back for a third time is I think

0:42:490:42:52

I could do with a boost to help me get along with t'journey

0:42:520:42:55

and I need to come to end now, I think.

0:42:550:42:57

Previous camps have helped her lose 2st

0:42:570:43:00

and boosted her confidence and self worth.

0:43:000:43:02

When I went to camp I was 12 and I was 14 or 15st. And I was big. I was a size 18.

0:43:020:43:09

And at 12 years old I don't think that's appropriate at all.

0:43:090:43:13

'Two years ago she was half the person she is.

0:43:130:43:16

'She didn't have any confidence. She just used to stay'

0:43:160:43:19

in her room. She was quite depressed for a young girl.

0:43:190:43:23

Her schoolwork wasn't fantastic.

0:43:230:43:25

This time she's won English star of the year this year

0:43:250:43:30

so that's all down to her confidence as well, I think.

0:43:300:43:33

It says Diva Destiny because obviously I was a diva.

0:43:340:43:38

I was loud and in-your-face. Pretty much

0:43:380:43:41

if you don't want to be friends with me you have no choice, you had to, cos I'm Destiny.

0:43:410:43:47

I've got a new room mate.

0:43:520:43:53

Someone called Destiny. Yeah.

0:43:550:43:58

15.

0:44:000:44:01

Sometimes the right room pairing

0:44:010:44:03

can have more of a positive impact than we can.

0:44:030:44:06

'Hopefully having Lana in a room with Destiny,

0:44:060:44:09

'Destiny can really help Lana come out of her shell.'

0:44:090:44:11

It's karaoke night. Whoo! So I've just got to pick something to wear now.

0:44:110:44:16

Last year everyone dressed up and wore skirts and stuff.

0:44:160:44:19

-I was going to sing but then I was like, no.

-Oh, sing. Go on, have a sing.

0:44:190:44:24

I didn't know the lyrics to the song I was going to sing.

0:44:240:44:28

I knew a bit of it but not all of it.

0:44:280:44:30

And if I got the songs wrong I'd be like, "Mm",

0:44:300:44:34

and I was scared what other people would think and say.

0:44:340:44:37

Don't... Honestly, never worry about what other people have to think about you.

0:44:370:44:41

Just think about yourself cos at the end of the day, what does it matter what other people think?

0:44:410:44:46

It's you you should be trying to please, not anyone else.

0:44:460:44:49

Lana used to put herself down so quickly.

0:44:490:44:52

She'd make a good thing a bad thing.

0:44:520:44:54

No-one is going to judge you.

0:44:540:44:55

Cos everyone's the same. It's like me. I wear what I want.

0:44:550:44:59

-Like, literally...

-What are you going to sing in the karaoke?

0:45:000:45:03

..I wouldn't wear something like this a few months ago.

0:45:030:45:06

-I'll probably never wear anything like that.

-Why?

0:45:060:45:10

-Because I've got stretch marks.

-No-one cares. Honestly.

0:45:100:45:14

-No-one cares.

-Everyone here is like the same.

-We're all family.

-Yes.

0:45:140:45:18

It's like when I was trying to talk to her about changing who

0:45:180:45:22

she is, she thought it was so hard

0:45:220:45:24

and she couldn't get it into her head that you can change.

0:45:240:45:27

She just thought she was stuck like that forever.

0:45:270:45:29

You don't believe in yourself enough.

0:45:290:45:32

You need that bit of confidence and motivation.

0:45:320:45:35

It's the final week and the last two mile challenge.

0:45:370:45:41

-Run for the Nando's.

-That'll do.

0:45:410:45:45

Over the five weeks they've been here,

0:45:460:45:48

Katie and Lana have struggled with the demands of the weekly run.

0:45:480:45:52

Come on, you can go quicker than that. Come on.

0:45:520:45:55

When I was running the 2MC I was thinking,

0:45:550:45:59

"This is it, I'm going to collapse. I'm going to have a heart attack.

0:45:590:46:02

"I'm going to die."

0:46:020:46:03

Come on, Lana. Keep going. Don't you dare walk on me.

0:46:030:46:07

Katie is off to a determined start

0:46:080:46:11

but she will have to work hard to beat her best time of 36 minutes.

0:46:110:46:16

Really out of breath. My stitch has gone, touch wood.

0:46:160:46:19

I think I've beaten my time. I hope.

0:46:220:46:24

'It is hard when you have weight problems when you are young'

0:46:260:46:31

cos all my friends are like really thin.

0:46:310:46:33

Nobody in my year is the weight I am.

0:46:330:46:37

They think I'd be a lot happier and a lot healthier if I lost weight.

0:46:370:46:42

CHEERING

0:46:420:46:44

All the way to that line. Keep going.

0:46:480:46:50

CHEERING

0:46:500:46:52

-Five minutes, Katie. High five.

-What did you get?

0:46:540:46:57

Katie smashed her best time by six minutes.

0:46:570:47:01

I'm quite tired, but I feel more positive

0:47:010:47:04

cos obviously the hormones have released and stuff. Endorphins.

0:47:040:47:09

SHE LAUGHS

0:47:090:47:10

Keep pushing. Just run to me.

0:47:100:47:13

Pippa set Lana the goal of running rather than walking

0:47:130:47:15

the two mile challenge.

0:47:150:47:17

Come on, Lana, keep going.

0:47:170:47:19

You're doing so well. You're going to thrash it at this rate.

0:47:190:47:23

Pippa's encouragement

0:47:230:47:25

and help in the 2MC,

0:47:250:47:27

the last one, I don't think

0:47:270:47:28

I would have run it

0:47:280:47:30

without her help.

0:47:300:47:31

Come on, Lana.

0:47:310:47:32

Just think of what an amazing achievement it's going to be.

0:47:320:47:35

So proud of you. All downhill now. Let the gravity take you.

0:47:350:47:40

CHEERING

0:47:400:47:44

Lana! Lana! Lana! Lana!

0:47:440:47:48

CHEERING

0:47:500:47:52

You did so well. Well done. High five.

0:47:520:47:54

'Although I was pushing her really hard I knew'

0:47:540:47:56

she could accomplish it if she really pushed herself.

0:47:560:48:00

35 minutes, 14. That's amazing. That's six minutes off.

0:48:000:48:05

Well done.

0:48:050:48:06

This was my choice and I'm trying

0:48:080:48:11

to make a difference with myself.

0:48:110:48:13

I'm in charge of my own willpower.

0:48:130:48:16

LAUGHTER

0:48:200:48:22

As camp draws to a close it's not just Lana

0:48:230:48:26

and Katie who have found new motivation.

0:48:260:48:28

Instead of sitting out, Aran is taking part too.

0:48:300:48:35

That feels good.

0:48:350:48:36

I've only got several days left so I might as well make it worth it.

0:48:360:48:40

'He stepped it up a bit this week and he didn't give up once'

0:48:410:48:44

and he's gone right through it so I'm really proud of him.

0:48:440:48:48

'He is saying himself that he's only got a few days left

0:48:480:48:51

'so he wants to get the most out of this.'

0:48:510:48:53

So that shows a good mind shift, a good behaviour change in him in such a short space of time.

0:48:530:48:59

When I came here, I didn't know anyone and I didn't want to.

0:49:020:49:06

Now most of these people are my friends.

0:49:060:49:10

I think Aran likes his own solitude sometimes.

0:49:100:49:13

I don't think there's anything wrong with him

0:49:130:49:15

spending his time to himself sometimes

0:49:150:49:17

because he does come out and speak to the others when he feels like it.

0:49:170:49:21

Watch what you do with my hair!

0:49:220:49:24

Aran does need this.

0:49:240:49:26

He needs this knowledge and he needs to make the change now.

0:49:260:49:31

But he understands that, which is great, and is half the battle.

0:49:320:49:36

I just realised what you were doing!

0:49:360:49:38

When I came here, I didn't feel like my own person.

0:49:380:49:41

These last two weeks have been important.

0:49:410:49:44

They have put up my self-confidence and at least I'm trying to change.

0:49:440:49:49

Five weeks completed and camp is coming to an end.

0:49:520:49:55

For all the kids, there's a final weigh-in.

0:49:580:50:02

OK, well done.

0:50:020:50:03

Katie managed to beat the target she set for herself.

0:50:030:50:06

I've lost a stone and a pound, which is really good.

0:50:060:50:09

I was aiming for over a stone

0:50:090:50:11

so I achieved my goal, which is really nice.

0:50:110:50:14

Lana had never set any goals for herself

0:50:160:50:18

until Pippa set her a target of losing three pounds each week.

0:50:180:50:22

We'll just do your waist circumference

0:50:220:50:24

if you want to step off for me.

0:50:240:50:26

In the last week alone, Lana has lost five pounds,

0:50:260:50:29

just under a stone in total.

0:50:290:50:31

Before, I didn't go out of the house much.

0:50:330:50:35

I'll probably after camp, because I think I've got more confident.

0:50:350:50:39

You should be really happy with that.

0:50:390:50:41

That's really good in five weeks of camp.

0:50:410:50:43

So, well done!

0:50:430:50:44

Aran is worried that unless he loses weight,

0:50:460:50:49

he could end up needing bypass surgery like his sister.

0:50:490:50:53

-There it is.

-124.1.

0:50:530:50:56

In the last two weeks, Aaron has lost six pounds.

0:50:560:50:59

You've lost three kilograms in two weeks.

0:51:010:51:04

That's about six or seven pounds.

0:51:040:51:07

-6.6 to be exact.

-Yeah, well done.

0:51:070:51:12

So that's healthy weight loss so that's good.

0:51:120:51:14

You don't want to be losing much more than that.

0:51:140:51:16

My waist circumference has gone down as well. Not that much.

0:51:160:51:21

He certainly has come out of his shell a bit.

0:51:210:51:24

There's a big difference between the way he was with other kids

0:51:240:51:26

when he got here and the way he is now.

0:51:260:51:28

The camp's talent show is a final test of the kids' confidence.

0:51:310:51:35

When we position talent shows it's thought through

0:51:350:51:38

because we know that it takes that amount of time before

0:51:380:51:41

they start to reach that point where they're going to get up on stage.

0:51:410:51:45

We know they're starting to feel more confident, expressive,

0:51:450:51:48

and that gives them the opportunity to do it.

0:51:480:51:52

I think it's actually pretty dark.

0:51:520:51:54

I did my make-up in the morning.

0:51:540:51:56

She looked at me and said, you're so pretty.

0:51:560:51:58

I'm like, make-up's not everything,

0:51:580:52:00

it doesn't make you look pretty, it's just an extra bit.

0:52:000:52:02

One day, I'll do yours

0:52:020:52:04

and then I thought about it and I thought, what if I do it tonight?

0:52:040:52:07

It'll give her a confidence boost.

0:52:070:52:08

I said, if you sing, I'll do your make-up.

0:52:080:52:10

She was like, do I sing or do I not? I'm not doing it.

0:52:100:52:12

I'm like, you are!

0:52:120:52:14

Do you want to put that on your lips and then you're done?

0:52:140:52:17

Even the more confident campers struggle with being centre stage.

0:52:240:52:28

Fuck, I'm literally shitting myself.

0:52:280:52:31

My mum is all about me singing in front of an audience.

0:52:320:52:36

"Katie, yeah, you've got to do all of these things, sing, sing.

0:52:360:52:40

"If I could sing, I would stand up and sing to everyone!"

0:52:400:52:44

I'm like, no, you wouldn't.

0:52:440:52:46

I don't know, I just don't think I'm that good at all.

0:52:510:52:55

CHEERING

0:52:570:53:00

# Sometimes I go out by myself

0:53:040:53:07

# And I look across the water

0:53:070:53:10

# Since I've come home, my body's been a mess...#

0:53:130:53:17

Before, I feel really nervous and when I'm performing,

0:53:170:53:20

I feel really confident.

0:53:200:53:22

I guess I learned that I can be strong.

0:53:220:53:26

# Why don't you come on over, Valerie?

0:53:260:53:29

# Oh, Valerie

0:53:310:53:34

# Why don't you come on over, Valerie? #

0:53:340:53:36

APPLAUSE

0:53:390:53:41

One of my favourite things about camp

0:53:430:53:45

is seeing the difference in their confidence.

0:53:450:53:47

For me, it's seeing them when they feel better about themselves,

0:53:470:53:51

then actually get up on stage at the talent show and singing

0:53:510:53:54

in front of all the campers, which they would never have done before.

0:53:540:53:58

CHEERING

0:54:030:54:05

# I'm criticised but all your bullets ricochet

0:54:050:54:11

# You shoot me down but I get up... #

0:54:120:54:16

When Lana sung, I thought she was very brave because she's showing

0:54:160:54:19

what she can do.

0:54:190:54:20

She didn't care what people thought about her.

0:54:200:54:24

# I'm bullet-proof, nothing to lose... #

0:54:240:54:28

I hope when I'm old enough I want to audition for X Factor.

0:54:280:54:34

I absolutely love it.

0:54:350:54:37

# You should be down but I won't fall... #

0:54:390:54:45

And she did it. I'm like, she's actually done it!

0:54:490:54:51

I'm so proud of her, knowing that that was her fear and she'd done it.

0:54:510:54:56

The positive thing about karaoke was that I wasn't hiding behind people.

0:54:560:55:00

-Well done, I'm so proud of you.

-That was an amazing achievement.

0:55:030:55:07

She shone. She did so well and we were all so proud of her.

0:55:070:55:11

-I do feel proud of myself.

-Come and give me a hug. There you go.

0:55:110:55:16

I'm happy that I got up on the stage, sang

0:55:160:55:20

and didn't want to puke up.

0:55:200:55:23

So camp is a relatively short period of time

0:55:250:55:27

and we see massive changes in their weight,

0:55:270:55:29

we see massive changes in how they think

0:55:290:55:31

and how they feel and how confident they are.

0:55:310:55:34

It's got the ball rolling and definitely I'm going to continue

0:55:340:55:37

when I get home, for sure.

0:55:370:55:39

Since camp, Aran has started college and made more friends

0:55:430:55:48

but his weight remains a problem.

0:55:480:55:50

Lana has maintained the weight she lost at camp

0:55:500:55:53

and she's feeling more confident at school too.

0:55:530:55:57

Katie has lost a total of 30 pounds and this summer,

0:55:570:56:00

she plans to trek around Vietnam with her school.

0:56:000:56:03

Next time: Amy is full of attitude.

0:56:050:56:08

Fat bitch coming through.

0:56:090:56:11

You ginger bitch!

0:56:130:56:15

And Stephen's in big trouble.
