This programme contains some strong language

0:00:020:00:04

-Us Brits are amongst the fattest in the world.

-Run for the Nando!

0:00:040:00:07

It's a national crisis and for some it's a matter of life or death.

0:00:070:00:10

There is no hope. There is no hope for him.

0:00:100:00:14

If she carries on, she will die young.

0:00:140:00:17

Welcome to a super-sized summer camp

0:00:170:00:19

that claims to have the answers to tackling the obesity epidemic.

0:00:190:00:24

Diets and boot camps don't work, because they're forcing something

0:00:240:00:27

on somebody that they may not be ready for.

0:00:270:00:29

But its methods are controversial.

0:00:290:00:31

-Nice big, healthy lunch.

-Oh, yeah.

0:00:310:00:33

The kids dine out on fast food.

0:00:330:00:37

-You know that's being greedy, Jordan.

-How am I being greedy?

0:00:370:00:40

Two litres of milk? Would you drink that a day?

0:00:400:00:42

Chips and pizza are on the menu.

0:00:420:00:45

My first impressions of the food - I would like more. Obviously.

0:00:450:00:50

It's why I'm here.

0:00:500:00:51

And the staff are barely older than the campers themselves.

0:00:510:00:55

Did anyone play with their Barbies when they were little?

0:00:550:00:57

They're ridiculous. They don't have a clue.

0:00:570:00:59

Telling you, don't have a clue.

0:00:590:01:01

For some campers, it'll be the longest five weeks of their lives.

0:01:010:01:05

So hard!

0:01:050:01:06

But for others, it's life-changing.

0:01:060:01:08

Does this radical approach work?

0:01:100:01:13

And is this really the answer to teenage obesity?

0:01:130:01:16

What a waste of effort and time.

0:01:160:01:18

Our camp gets results.

0:01:180:01:21

I'm going to go with the chips and burger.

0:01:210:01:23

Get that belly movement up and down.

0:01:230:01:25

Jiggle, jiggle, jiggle, jiggle, jiggle!

0:01:250:01:27

It's week one at Europe's only residential weight loss camp

0:01:330:01:38

for young people.

0:01:380:01:40

The 86 campers should all be in exercise sessions.

0:01:400:01:44

You've got to start making attempts on the ball.

0:01:440:01:46

But 13-year-old Stephen is refusing to take part.

0:01:460:01:51

I'm missing home and I just wanted to...

0:01:510:01:54

just wanted to pack my bags and go home.

0:01:540:01:56

INAUDIBLE CONVERSATION

0:02:340:02:42

Right, give us two minutes. Sit down there. Let's go and have a chat.

0:02:440:02:48

It can be difficult for these kids.

0:02:490:02:51

Some of them have never been away from home,

0:02:510:02:54

never been from their parents

0:02:540:02:56

and then, they're doing things that they've never done as well,

0:02:560:02:59

so it's all very intimidating.

0:02:590:03:01

It's a new environment, which is intimidating alone.

0:03:010:03:04

It just takes a bit of time.

0:03:040:03:06

Stephen lives with his mum and dad in Scarborough and weighs nearly 14st.

0:03:220:03:27

I normally spend my money on loads of food, like burgers, chips.

0:03:270:03:32

It makes me feel quite sad when I'm at school,

0:03:320:03:35

when they're calling me stuff.

0:03:350:03:38

But I just have to put up with it.

0:03:380:03:40

All of Stephen's family are trying to help him lose weight,

0:03:400:03:45

including his nan.

0:03:450:03:46

-What are you having, Steve? You've cut down, haven't you?

-Yeah, two.

0:03:460:03:51

-Two? I thought you only had one now.

-Oh, one and a half, I think.

0:03:510:03:56

I think one will be enough.

0:03:560:03:58

We tried with him, you know,

0:03:580:04:00

to cut him down and that, but he'll still sneak and get something.

0:04:000:04:04

Stephen is a key member of his local cadets.

0:04:040:04:07

His ambition is to join the army.

0:04:070:04:09

The army, I think, is teaching him respect and discipline

0:04:090:04:14

and I want to keep him on the straight and narrow.

0:04:140:04:16

I want him to go down paths that are going to open doors for him.

0:04:160:04:20

That's it. Beautiful. Come on, arms up.

0:04:200:04:23

That is one of my motivations.

0:04:230:04:25

Yeah, you've got to be quite fit to get in the army,

0:04:250:04:29

to like run around in the battlefield and that.

0:04:290:04:33

But what I need to do mostly

0:04:330:04:35

is just stop eating all like fatty foods and start eating healthy.

0:04:350:04:39

-Stephen? You like pork, don't you?

-Yes, please.

0:04:390:04:43

Once he's got that weight off him and he's got more

0:04:460:04:48

confidence in himself,

0:04:480:04:50

I think that'll, you know, be the making of him.

0:04:500:04:53

The staff have persuaded Stephen to stay.

0:04:550:05:00

But a few days later,

0:05:000:05:01

and he's still struggling to cope with the structure and rules.

0:05:010:05:05

Leave my shirt alone! Leave my shirt alone! Why? Don't touch me, bitch!

0:05:050:05:12

Don't touch me, bitch!

0:05:140:05:16

I've only got a red one. I've only got that one.

0:05:190:05:21

Yeah.

0:05:280:05:29

I hate snitches.

0:05:400:05:43

That's one thing I do fucking hate. Snitches.

0:05:430:05:47

The thing I've been doing is just... I... Flicking their ears.

0:05:470:05:51

I love winding people up. It's funny as!

0:05:510:05:56

Stephen, will you come and sit on these red chairs, for a sec?

0:05:560:05:59

I just need a little chat, buddy.

0:05:590:06:00

Stephen has been summoned to see camp leader Tay.

0:06:000:06:03

I've heard that a staff member has asked you to go to

0:06:030:06:06

isolation on the table. You downright refused.

0:06:060:06:10

And I just want you to know that that kind of stuff doesn't fly.

0:06:100:06:13

You listen to every member of staff, I don't care who it is.

0:06:130:06:16

We're all trying to help. We're not trying to single you out.

0:06:160:06:18

We're not trying to get you in trouble,

0:06:180:06:20

cos we want what's best for you.

0:06:200:06:22

We want you to develop from here in every way possible, OK?

0:06:220:06:26

So what we're going to do is

0:06:260:06:27

you're going to go into isolation, all right?

0:06:270:06:30

-Right.

-Is that all right?

-That's fine.

-OK.

-Yeah.

-All right.

0:06:300:06:35

-Good man. Let's not let it happen again, right?

-All right.

0:06:350:06:38

Cheers, buddy.

0:06:380:06:39

Hopefully he took it on board and listened and we'll go from there.

0:06:390:06:42

Hopefully, this is the end of it.

0:06:420:06:45

Stephen will have to stay in isolation until staff

0:06:450:06:47

decide that he has learnt his lesson.

0:06:470:06:50

My behaviour has been a little bit...

0:06:500:06:53

I have been a little bit silly throughout the days.

0:06:530:06:56

But it's mostly just like I'm missing home

0:06:560:06:59

and I just want to go home.

0:06:590:07:01

The camp was founded 16 years ago by leading childhood obesity

0:07:010:07:07

expert Professor Paul Gately, to help kids like Stephen.

0:07:070:07:12

It's not a boot camp. We don't force anyone to do anything.

0:07:120:07:14

But we do work with them and encourage them and support them,

0:07:140:07:17

because one in three children have a weight-related problem

0:07:170:07:20

that will both shorten their life

0:07:200:07:21

and reduce the quality of their life.

0:07:210:07:23

Over five weeks, the campers are put through an intensive

0:07:230:07:27

course of workshops and exercise sessions

0:07:270:07:30

led by a staff of volunteers with a background in sports science,

0:07:300:07:34

nutrition and education.

0:07:340:07:38

We've found as we've worked through different staff mixes that,

0:07:380:07:41

actually, a younger workforce relates much better to the

0:07:410:07:44

young people on camp.

0:07:440:07:46

14-year-old Sebastian is already standing out

0:07:480:07:52

because of his positive attitude.

0:07:520:07:54

I'd describe Sebastian as very polite. He is hard-working.

0:07:540:07:58

He does everything he's told, um, very organised.

0:07:580:08:02

Likes to keep his room clean.

0:08:020:08:05

The campers are responsible for cleaning their own dorms.

0:08:050:08:10

I've cleaned the dorms in the last two and a half weeks

0:08:150:08:18

for like seven times, I think?

0:08:180:08:21

I'm very hygiene-conscious. Everything normally has to be clean.

0:08:210:08:24

That was on the desk!

0:08:240:08:26

I actually really enjoy cleaning.

0:08:260:08:28

I can't understand how people live in dirt,

0:08:280:08:31

so even the smallest things really, really annoy me.

0:08:310:08:35

I enjoy it, in a way - it's something that relaxes me,

0:08:350:08:39

so it's just fun in my eyes.

0:08:390:08:41

This has been bothering me for ages.

0:08:410:08:44

Switch off the lights. You are absolutely kidding me, right?

0:08:550:09:01

That's been bothering me for the whole time I was in this room!

0:09:010:09:05

Sebastian is over six foot tall and weighs 19st.

0:09:070:09:13

When I look at myself, I normally degrade myself,

0:09:130:09:16

because I'm definitely overweight.

0:09:160:09:19

I wouldn't be surprised if I was classed as obese.

0:09:190:09:21

I'm never sure what people think of me,

0:09:210:09:24

because people judge you on how you look before they even know you

0:09:240:09:27

and I've had that very, very often.

0:09:270:09:30

Sebastian was born in the UK, but moved to Switzerland

0:09:300:09:33

with his family when he was just four years old.

0:09:330:09:36

His size has always been a problem and, in the past,

0:09:360:09:39

led to bullying at school.

0:09:390:09:41

Children started commenting and making fun of my weight

0:09:410:09:45

and then, I became incredibly unhappy, incredibly scared.

0:09:450:09:52

They would call him nasty names and they would say that he's fat

0:09:520:09:55

and he's not somebody that can stand up for himself in that very moment.

0:09:550:10:00

He would quite often cry in front of those children, which then, sort of,

0:10:000:10:04

triggered their will to carry on with the bullying.

0:10:040:10:07

As a result of the bullying,

0:10:090:10:11

Sebastian finds it hard to make friends with boys his own age

0:10:110:10:14

and spends most of his time with his sister.

0:10:140:10:17

We eat together, we laugh together,

0:10:170:10:19

we wake up and go to school every morning.

0:10:190:10:22

Although the problems at school were dealt with,

0:10:230:10:25

Sebastian still finds it hard to eat in front of people.

0:10:250:10:29

There are days where I'd hardly eat anything at school,

0:10:290:10:32

so when I get home, I just raid the fridge.

0:10:320:10:35

As soon as he sets foot into the house, he's in his element.

0:10:350:10:39

He's got control over the fridge and the cupboard.

0:10:390:10:42

But he never tends to a carrot, it's always the crisps that he goes for.

0:10:420:10:46

I'm hungry, I don't know what I fancy,

0:10:460:10:49

so I'll eat everything that I can get my hands on.

0:10:490:10:52

I sit in front of the TV and I just eat.

0:10:520:10:56

Now his parents have paid for him to go to camp,

0:10:560:10:59

hoping he can deal with some of his issues and perhaps find new friends.

0:10:590:11:03

So today, we're going to be talking about self-identity

0:11:050:11:08

and think good, feel good. Is it just Josh...?

0:11:080:11:10

This morning, Sebastian is in a workshop

0:11:100:11:12

which focuses on building confidence.

0:11:120:11:14

Self-esteem is how happy we are on the inside, who we are as a person,

0:11:140:11:18

and body confidence is how we feel about ourselves on the outside,

0:11:180:11:21

the way that we look physically.

0:11:210:11:23

Particularly today, we will be talking about some things

0:11:230:11:26

that are quite personal.

0:11:260:11:27

In all the conversations I've had with kids that are overweight

0:11:270:11:30

and obese, many of them talk in a way that it's almost like daily

0:11:300:11:33

torture is what they go through. People are picking on them,

0:11:330:11:36

people are judging them,

0:11:360:11:38

people are calling them names and it just isn't a nice place to be

0:11:380:11:41

and it certainly isn't a nice place to be for a teenager.

0:11:410:11:44

Has anyone here ever been bullied for anything?

0:11:440:11:47

Quite a few people putting their hands up now.

0:11:470:11:50

So a lot of these things that we find with bullies,

0:11:500:11:52

a lot of the time, bullies will pick on you just because they want to

0:11:520:11:56

pick on you, with something they can see from a distance.

0:11:560:11:59

They won't bother to come to you, take the time to get to know you.

0:11:590:12:02

It's, a lot of the time, visual things.

0:12:020:12:04

Sebastian and the group have been asked to write a list of what

0:12:040:12:07

they think is good and bad about themselves.

0:12:070:12:10

Jot down how you would like people to describe you, or how you

0:12:120:12:15

feel people would describe you.

0:12:150:12:18

Say, I'm a boy, I'm good at maths...

0:12:180:12:21

Writing the bad things down, it wasn't really easy.

0:12:210:12:25

It was hard because, again,

0:12:250:12:27

it brought back all the memories

0:12:270:12:29

and it just really made me sad.

0:12:290:12:32

(Yeah, yeah, of course you can.)

0:12:330:12:35

I just got a bit emotional and I went outside because I was

0:12:350:12:38

scared that if I would cry in front of the other boys, they would laugh.

0:12:380:12:42

I'm always scared that that list is going to be in the back of my head.

0:12:420:12:46

Names that I've been called.

0:12:480:12:50

One can't stop thinking about them sometimes and

0:12:500:12:54

when everyone wants to do something,

0:12:540:12:57

one thinks about that list and

0:12:570:13:00

it kind of...degrades you in a way.

0:13:000:13:04

What got you upset? Was it just thinking about these things or...?

0:13:060:13:09

-The past.

-The past. What sort of things?

-Bullying.

0:13:090:13:14

-Main thing.

-Yeah.

0:13:140:13:17

Although other people may think of these as a negative thing,

0:13:170:13:20

are they always?

0:13:200:13:22

Sometimes they might be personal opinions.

0:13:220:13:26

Also, things like being controlling, is that a bad thing?

0:13:260:13:30

I know that sometimes people might say to you, "Oh, my God,

0:13:300:13:33

"you might be controlling," and you'd be like, "Oh, God, I am."

0:13:330:13:36

Like we said with that video, when someone says, "Like a girl,"

0:13:360:13:39

should it be an insult?

0:13:390:13:41

It shouldn't be, so lots of things like that.

0:13:410:13:44

What about these ones? These are all really good things about you

0:13:440:13:47

and there's some of these on here that I've not really seen before.

0:13:470:13:51

Hygienic, that's a really good one.

0:13:510:13:53

It's a really good thing to have in your life.

0:13:530:13:55

-Do you want to rip it up?

-Throw it!

-Yes!

0:14:000:14:03

You can throw it over there, if you want, rip it up.

0:14:030:14:06

Get rid of it!

0:14:060:14:08

-Whoo!

-Yeah!

0:14:090:14:11

Sebastian might have thrown away his worries, but he's too neat

0:14:130:14:17

and tidy to drop litter.

0:14:170:14:18

-It's lunchtime.

-Can I get sweet-and-sour chicken?

0:14:240:14:27

Children who grow up obese are likely to die ten years younger than

0:14:300:14:34

kids who are a healthy weight.

0:14:340:14:38

But mealtimes on camp offer some surprising options.

0:14:380:14:42

There's not bad foods, there's only bad diets, so, therefore,

0:14:420:14:46

it's about helping them understand,

0:14:460:14:49

I can have chips and I can have a pizza,

0:14:490:14:51

but I need to mix that with pasta dishes and salad dishes.

0:14:510:14:56

It's about trying to get it right 80% of the time

0:14:560:14:58

and the weight will take care of itself.

0:14:580:15:00

If they're sticking to the sort of principles and the rules that

0:15:000:15:03

we've given them, it's much easier

0:15:030:15:05

to manage their weight for the future.

0:15:050:15:07

Just that, thank you.

0:15:070:15:09

15-year-old twins Amy and Beth are finding it hard to settle in.

0:15:090:15:14

Roughly half of the campers are paid for privately.

0:15:210:15:25

The others, like Amy and Beth,

0:15:250:15:26

are sent by the NHS or their local authority.

0:15:260:15:30

I got referred by my doctor because I've got hypertension,

0:15:300:15:33

that's high blood pressure.

0:15:330:15:35

It could like resort into strokes and heart attacks.

0:15:350:15:38

Twin sister Beth is at risk of developing the same conditions.

0:15:390:15:42

We're the same size, we're going through the same things.

0:15:420:15:45

If it doesn't, like, stop, I'd probably get it as well.

0:15:450:15:49

Obesity is recognised as the modern-day plague.

0:15:490:15:52

85% of kids who are overweight and obese during childhood will be

0:15:520:15:55

overweight and obese adults, so it will cost our society

0:15:550:15:59

lots of money, but the impact on those lives will be significant.

0:15:590:16:03

So, therefore, addressing it early is absolutely a must.

0:16:030:16:07

The girls each way 16st.

0:16:070:16:10

I don't think we really have a relationship with food, do we?

0:16:100:16:13

I think it's just an excuse. We just use it as comfort, like,

0:16:130:16:17

when we've not got anything else to do, bored, upset.

0:16:170:16:21

I choose the wrong types of foods. So, like I say, if I went out

0:16:210:16:24

with friends, I'd rather go get a McDonald's than like a salad.

0:16:240:16:27

It's not only the twins who have a dangerous relationship with food.

0:16:300:16:34

Their mum Louise has battled with various eating disorders for decades.

0:16:340:16:39

I started off with bulimia, which is eating and vomiting.

0:16:390:16:44

And, unfortunately, I've turned the other way now where I just eat very,

0:16:440:16:49

very little...

0:16:490:16:51

and my weight's dropped and I'd rather starve than be sick,

0:16:510:16:56

and that's not a message I want to give to the children.

0:16:560:17:00

I think it's really strange living with a parent who

0:17:000:17:03

is on the opposite spectrum of an eating disorder.

0:17:030:17:06

It's a bit strange having a parent who is undereating

0:17:060:17:08

as we're overeating.

0:17:080:17:11

The girls have been sent to camp by their doctor to try

0:17:110:17:14

and address their own food issues.

0:17:140:17:16

But a few days in and Beth is finding it hard to cope being

0:17:180:17:21

away from her mum.

0:17:210:17:23

Beth's not really happy with staying here at the camp.

0:17:230:17:26

So, we're having to make a decision whether to, like, go back or stay.

0:17:260:17:30

Amy calls their mum to discuss the situation.

0:17:330:17:36

She's just not interested in like...

0:17:360:17:39

She's not getting involved with anyone else.

0:17:390:17:41

She's got her whole mind set on coming home.

0:17:410:17:44

-'Are you being mean to her or something?'

-No.

0:17:440:17:47

She's got one person she's talking to

0:17:470:17:50

and she's not interested in anyone else.

0:17:500:17:52

She won't get involved properly in, like, activities and stuff,

0:17:520:17:55

so what does she expect?

0:17:550:17:57

If you all have a think...

0:17:570:17:58

I think this just isn't really for Beth

0:17:580:18:00

and I think she's quite uncomfortable here.

0:18:000:18:03

She just wants to be with family and friends.

0:18:030:18:05

It's the next day and Beth has decided she wants to go home.

0:18:080:18:12

I think they'll kind of miss each other,

0:18:150:18:17

but then, I think it's a good chance for them

0:18:170:18:19

each to have individual time, you know,

0:18:190:18:22

where people get that this is just Amy

0:18:220:18:24

and Beth gets a bit of time at home with me

0:18:240:18:26

and her friends, and it's just Beth.

0:18:260:18:28

I think they'll do all right without each other, though. Fingers crossed.

0:18:300:18:35

For the first time in their lives, twins Beth and Amy will be apart.

0:18:350:18:39

-Do you think you're going to miss Beth?

-I know...

0:18:430:18:46

It's not like she's going somewhere random.

0:18:460:18:48

It's just that she's going home, so that's fine.

0:18:480:18:51

So I don't think I'll miss her as much.

0:18:510:18:53

I think it's going to be more, like, weird.

0:18:530:18:55

It's just going to be like generally weird not having Beth being there.

0:18:550:18:59

No, it'll be fine.

0:18:590:19:00

Beth left me a letter and it says, "Amy, I wish I could stay

0:19:080:19:12

"longer with you, but I'm so proud and I know you will do amazing.

0:19:120:19:16

"Remember I love you infinite amounts.

0:19:160:19:18

"I am and I will be thinking of you every minute.

0:19:180:19:21

"Love you lots, Betty."

0:19:210:19:23

Bit awkward.

0:19:240:19:25

I don't like being my own in a room, it's, like, really boring.

0:19:250:19:28

And, like, it's really uncomfortable in the night,

0:19:280:19:31

but I'm all right, it's all right.

0:19:310:19:34

I'm so depressing. How depressing am I?

0:19:340:19:37

People are going to start crying.

0:19:370:19:39

Phone calls home are restricted to three times a week

0:19:440:19:47

and all mobile devices are taken off the kids in the hope

0:19:470:19:51

they will focus on the camp and socialise with one another.

0:19:510:19:55

But being away from family and friends can be very difficult.

0:19:550:19:59

If I can deal with my homesickness the way that

0:20:020:20:04

I want to deal with my weight

0:20:040:20:06

and that's... I want to deal with my weight very extremely,

0:20:060:20:10

-then, that would be just better for all of us.

-I would say

0:20:100:20:12

it's getting to me a bit, yeah, missing everyone at home,

0:20:120:20:15

my friends. Like, missing parties and stuff.

0:20:150:20:19

It's getting to me.

0:20:200:20:22

I'm missing a couple of things while I'm at camp,

0:20:240:20:27

like my mum, my dad, my dog...

0:20:270:20:29

and my PlayStation.

0:20:290:20:31

Ten days into the course and Stephen has made a decision.

0:20:330:20:37

Still missing home and unable to cope with life at camp,

0:20:370:20:40

he's packed his bags and wants to leave.

0:20:400:20:43

You've got a decision to make. You've got a really good opportunity

0:20:430:20:47

here to set a really good example,

0:20:470:20:49

to show all your friends at home, show all your family,

0:20:490:20:53

like, potentially show the world how good you can be.

0:20:530:20:58

Stephen was very much one thing or the other, it seemed.

0:20:580:21:02

There was a lot of times he might be crying that he wants to stay,

0:21:020:21:04

or crying that he wants to leave and it must be a difficult...

0:21:040:21:09

He's at a difficult age, the kind of early adolescence,

0:21:090:21:11

where he's not sure...

0:21:110:21:13

not sure what he wants to be, not sure what he wants to do.

0:21:130:21:17

Hiya.

0:21:170:21:18

Stephen's been allowed to phone his parents.

0:21:180:21:21

Can you come pick me up, please? No, I've packed my bags and everything.

0:21:210:21:26

I want to leave.

0:21:260:21:27

No, but I want to come home cos I don't like it.

0:21:280:21:30

I've packed my bags and everything.

0:21:300:21:33

Mm.

0:21:360:21:37

What?

0:21:400:21:41

All right.

0:21:430:21:44

Yeah.

0:21:470:21:49

HE SOBS

0:21:500:21:53

I'm not used to hearing them words off my dad.

0:21:570:22:00

They make me a little bit emotional.

0:22:000:22:03

Stephen's grandad died four years ago.

0:22:030:22:07

My grandad meant a lot to me.

0:22:070:22:09

I always used to spend the days with him.

0:22:090:22:12

And he just really meant a lot to me.

0:22:120:22:15

He loved his grandad.

0:22:180:22:20

He was just a nice bloke. He was just a down-to-earth bloke.

0:22:210:22:24

He told you black was black and white was white.

0:22:240:22:27

Yeah, he was a nice guy, was my dad.

0:22:270:22:31

Once I heard my grandad's name mentioned I was like,

0:22:310:22:34

"I've got to carry on." I don't want to make him upset or...

0:22:340:22:38

unproud of me.

0:22:380:22:41

Stephen decides to give the camp one more go.

0:22:410:22:44

Every day, the campers are required to complete at least three hours

0:22:580:23:02

of physical exercise.

0:23:020:23:05

I guess it's hard. Like, some things like swimming and stuff that I like

0:23:050:23:09

and there's other things, like, running and stuff

0:23:090:23:12

they make you do that I don't really like.

0:23:120:23:15

I really don't like football and stuff, really I hate this

0:23:150:23:18

and I can be just a goalkeeper

0:23:180:23:21

and I'm still just standing and don't do nothing.

0:23:210:23:24

I really hate it so much.

0:23:240:23:25

This morning, the girls are in the gym playing dodge ball.

0:23:270:23:31

Got you, Chloe. Chloe!

0:23:320:23:35

Don't you dare pretend that I didn't get your head.

0:23:350:23:39

But without her twin sister,

0:23:390:23:41

Amy is struggling to find her place in the group.

0:23:410:23:44

Fat bitch coming through.

0:23:440:23:45

I hate dodge ball, it's so bad and I can't play dodge ball.

0:23:480:23:52

So I thought, there's no point.

0:23:520:23:53

No-one goes by the rules either.

0:23:530:23:56

You get hit by the ball and they pretend that they haven't,

0:23:560:23:59

even though about half the people there have seen them.

0:23:590:24:02

What the heck, are you joking?

0:24:020:24:04

"I didn't get hit by the ball, I'm still in." No, you're not.

0:24:040:24:07

If they're not going to play by the rules, I'm not.

0:24:070:24:11

What the hell?!

0:24:110:24:13

-Amy, you're out.

-Get away. I'm not out! I am not out.

0:24:130:24:17

She caught it, you're out.

0:24:170:24:20

Please. You're out.

0:24:200:24:22

You ginger bitch.

0:24:220:24:23

Amy is one of the heaviest girls at camp

0:24:240:24:27

and seems to have lost her motivation.

0:24:270:24:32

Ow! Ow! What are you doing?

0:24:320:24:34

You got in my way, sorry.

0:24:340:24:35

The staff are worried about her attitude

0:24:350:24:38

and its potential impact on her progress.

0:24:380:24:42

Amy's quite difficult in changing her mind,

0:24:420:24:44

so if she's set on not doing something, she won't do it.

0:24:440:24:48

I think Amy does need to focus a bit more, to kind of engage a bit more.

0:24:480:24:52

Obviously, the more she's engaging and focusing,

0:24:520:24:54

the more she's going to learn.

0:24:540:24:56

So we can kind of help her think about the long-term plan.

0:24:560:24:59

Every week, campers take part in a two-mile challenge

0:25:090:25:14

running a cross-country route around the campus.

0:25:140:25:18

Three, two, one, go, go!

0:25:180:25:22

The challenge is not about the time it takes to complete the course,

0:25:240:25:28

but the attitude the campers show towards it.

0:25:280:25:32

A two-mile challenge on camp is a really useful

0:25:320:25:34

indication of both the camper's fitness

0:25:340:25:37

and also their motivation to lose weight.

0:25:370:25:39

It's really good to see

0:25:390:25:40

which of our campus are really going to push themselves

0:25:400:25:43

and which ones we might need to push to turn around.

0:25:430:25:46

SHE PANTS

0:25:460:25:49

Amy doesn't seem keen.

0:25:490:25:51

I'm walking it, not running it.

0:25:530:25:54

It's been raining really badly all day

0:25:540:25:56

but it's actually getting better now.

0:25:560:25:58

But it's really slippery, so I'm not falling over.

0:25:580:26:02

Going to walk it.

0:26:020:26:03

Amy's attitude seems to be rubbing off on others.

0:26:100:26:12

Her new friend,

0:26:120:26:14

14-year-old Rinat from Israel, is also refusing to run.

0:26:140:26:18

I hate the two-mile challenge so much.

0:26:180:26:21

-I think it's all right, but this weather's just catastrophic.

-Yes.

0:26:210:26:24

It's really nasty that they're making us walk in this weather.

0:26:240:26:28

-Let's go, let's go! Come on, come on!

-Leave me.

0:26:280:26:30

-"Come on, come on."

-Can you leave us be?

0:26:300:26:32

While the rest of the campers push on through the rain,

0:26:340:26:37

Amy and Rinat have found a short cut.

0:26:370:26:40

Bye, guys.

0:26:400:26:41

THEY GIGGLE

0:26:430:26:46

I can say this is the funnest thing ever.

0:26:460:26:49

But their rebellion doesn't last long.

0:26:520:26:55

We got disqualified for cheating!

0:26:550:26:57

Disqualified!

0:27:020:27:03

Amy is still a long way from succeeding at camp.

0:27:050:27:08

They have crushed my dreams(!)

0:27:080:27:11

SHOUTS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

0:27:130:27:16

It's halfway through the course and Amy has been told to pack

0:27:230:27:27

an overnight bag for this week's off-site excursion.

0:27:270:27:31

Today, everyone's going camping.

0:27:310:27:34

I don't think this is worth going camping at all.

0:27:340:27:37

I'd rather sleep here.

0:27:390:27:41

I think I might start crying in a minute, literally.

0:27:410:27:44

It's horrendous.

0:27:440:27:47

I'm off, I'm not going.

0:27:470:27:49

I'll have to go and tell Lee I'm not going. I'm staying here.

0:27:490:27:52

-Excuse me, I'm not going camping.

-Why?

0:27:520:27:54

-Why?

-I'm not going, I'm not going.

0:27:540:27:55

The staff wouldn't take no for an answer.

0:27:590:28:03

Everyone, including Amy, is on board.

0:28:030:28:06

Whilst teaching their physical-activity skills are important,

0:28:100:28:13

it's also really important that they're having fun.

0:28:130:28:17

If you see them enjoying it, that's maybe making a positive

0:28:170:28:20

association with the healthy lifestyle.

0:28:200:28:22

Summer holidays are supposed to be like, oh, going on holiday,

0:28:290:28:32

sunbathing, having ice cream,

0:28:320:28:34

not sleeping in a cold tent with bugs and rain.

0:28:340:28:39

How long are we walking for? I swear to God...

0:28:410:28:44

We wanted to have a treat and this Wednesday, we went to camp.

0:28:440:28:48

I hated it.

0:28:480:28:49

As part of the fun,

0:28:530:28:54

the camp leaders also want the campers to build their own tents.

0:28:540:28:58

Go on, then, guys. What have we got? There we go.

0:28:580:29:01

We need a bit of team work.

0:29:010:29:03

People putting some more effort in, do you know what I mean?

0:29:030:29:07

I'm not very good in woodlands. Too many trees for me.

0:29:090:29:14

-Oh, this is disgusting, there is a bird poop.

-Urgh!

0:29:140:29:17

It's not what 14-year-old Rinat is used to.

0:29:180:29:23

I thought it was going to be like really something

0:29:230:29:25

that's, like, a vacation from the camp.

0:29:250:29:27

This is awful.

0:29:270:29:29

It was like a punishment.

0:29:290:29:30

At home in Israel, Rinat usually gets her own way.

0:29:330:29:37

I'm like, I think, the manager of this house.

0:29:370:29:41

I say something, people do it.

0:29:410:29:44

She's funny, she's loud,

0:29:460:29:49

she is self-minded.

0:29:490:29:51

That is Rinat.

0:29:520:29:54

Rinat has taken over every available wardrobe in the house.

0:29:540:29:59

I'm the only one in my family that have three closets.

0:29:590:30:02

I have here a lot of my shoes and my bags.

0:30:020:30:06

I have, like, it's opening and I have,

0:30:060:30:09

like, some weeks, I'm going, like, every day for shopping

0:30:090:30:12

and I buy every day five things, six things.

0:30:120:30:14

Rinat's parents employ a full-time housekeeper.

0:30:140:30:18

My maid, I ask her something, she will make me.

0:30:180:30:22

It's like, I ask her to make me cakes for school, or to make me

0:30:220:30:26

anything, she just do it.

0:30:260:30:29

She lives with her mum, dad and younger brother.

0:30:290:30:33

But when it comes to her weight, she takes after her father.

0:30:330:30:37

My mum is skinny and my brother is skinny, like my mum,

0:30:370:30:41

and my father is fat and I am like...round!

0:30:410:30:46

Despite weighing over 12st,

0:30:460:30:49

Rinat just can't motivate herself to lose any weight.

0:30:490:30:53

I really hate exercise. It's, like, so hard.

0:30:530:30:58

You can't really like it because it's hard.

0:30:580:31:00

You must to make your body move

0:31:000:31:02

and, like, be tired and working hard.

0:31:020:31:04

So, no, it's absolutely disgusting, I think.

0:31:040:31:08

So this summer, Rinat was sent to camp by her parents,

0:31:080:31:13

who decided not to tell her exactly what she was in for.

0:31:130:31:16

I thought this was a sports camp. That's what my dad told me.

0:31:160:31:21

Like, I didn't think it was like a...

0:31:210:31:23

overweight camp, like fat camp.

0:31:230:31:27

Her dad, bless her,

0:31:270:31:28

convinced her she was going to an English camp, which she's gone to

0:31:280:31:33

before, where they learn English and get to go shopping in Oxford Street.

0:31:330:31:37

She rocks up to Bradford with her £10 budget a week.

0:31:370:31:41

SHE LAUGHS

0:31:410:31:42

No, this is...this is awful! Where I supposed to sleep?!

0:31:420:31:47

CHILDREN: Outside!

0:31:470:31:49

-Kicking you out!

-No! See, look, there is, like, this place, OK?

0:31:490:31:53

We noticed in the first few weeks particularly, with Rinat,

0:31:530:31:57

that she likes to get her own way.

0:31:570:31:58

And when she doesn't get her own way, she will let the staff know about it.

0:31:580:32:02

I can't hold it, because then my hands will be dirty.

0:32:020:32:05

We come for vacation, we don't come to work. We pay on this place!

0:32:070:32:10

No vacation on this camp, my love! No, no, no.

0:32:100:32:13

This is a summer vacation and we pay much money.

0:32:130:32:16

So, please, tell them to do it.

0:32:160:32:18

Does it do it like... Sorry, honey!

0:32:180:32:21

Come on! What is wrong with this thing?!

0:32:210:32:25

I give up.

0:32:270:32:29

Rinat is not the only one dreading a night under canvas.

0:32:290:32:32

I'm not interested in building a tent or even being here.

0:32:330:32:37

Like, seriously, it's disgusting.

0:32:370:32:40

I can't sleep outside. I feel like a homeless person!

0:32:400:32:44

It's really bad. I didn't know it would be this bad.

0:32:440:32:49

Literally, I'm not liking it.

0:32:490:32:52

The floor is rock hard!

0:32:520:32:54

-I'd prefer to sleep in a toilet.

-LAUGHTER

0:32:540:32:57

This is our tent. The floor is so dirty.

0:32:590:33:01

Everything is, like, disgusting.

0:33:010:33:04

I don't know how we're supposed to sleep here.

0:33:040:33:07

Everybody has to sleep with bugs and everything.

0:33:070:33:09

This is not possible!

0:33:090:33:10

I mean, we're all, like, having a bad time, but I think Rinat,

0:33:100:33:14

she was just like, "Oh, no, it's such a punishment.

0:33:140:33:16

"I don't want to be here."

0:33:160:33:18

-There is no place for us! We have, like...

-You'll have to budge up.

0:33:180:33:22

-No, but why? Are we sardines? I don't understand!

-Yeah!

0:33:220:33:25

I look like a sardine?

0:33:250:33:26

I'm not feeling like a sardine, so we can't be sardines, OK?

0:33:260:33:29

Now we're going to sleep next to all the stinky, like... No way!

0:33:290:33:33

OK, how about these guys move a little bit more down?

0:33:330:33:37

This is horrible.

0:33:370:33:41

Rinat really wasn't impressed by the sleeping arrangements.

0:33:410:33:44

She didn't want to stay in a tent.

0:33:440:33:46

But I was encouraging her to stay outside, get involved with all the

0:33:460:33:50

other girls, because none of them really wanted to stay in the tent.

0:33:500:33:53

-Come on, let's find you a room.

-Oh, my God, you give me a room?!

0:33:530:33:57

-Yes, you have a room, Rinat! Come on!

-Yes!

-Let's go!

0:33:570:34:00

Yes!

0:34:000:34:02

-Get in there.

-Thank you, Leah, you're the best.

0:34:020:34:04

-You're my favourite staff, right?

-I know it!

0:34:040:34:06

If you want something, do everything you can to get it,

0:34:060:34:09

because then you get it and that's all.

0:34:090:34:11

You don't need to just say, "Fine, I will sleep in the tent."

0:34:110:34:14

No, you need to fight what you want and then you will get it.

0:34:140:34:17

Oh, my God, it's going to be, like, the best night. Party!

0:34:170:34:20

I was thinking party.

0:34:200:34:23

Rinat could definitely have stayed outside, but sometimes...

0:34:230:34:27

Yeah, just to keep the peace, it is just easier to let her go inside.

0:34:270:34:31

The camp staff have planned an usual evening of entertainment.

0:34:340:34:38

Kicking off with a raw onion-eating competition.

0:34:380:34:41

KIDS SHOUT ENCOURAGEMENT

0:34:410:34:43

Trial Night for me is a bit like our version of I'm A Celebrity.

0:34:450:34:49

CHEERING

0:34:490:34:50

We know that those things are what draw stronger

0:34:500:34:53

relationships between our staff and our children.

0:34:530:34:56

I thought that the staff trials were hilarious.

0:34:580:35:02

I don't really know why they do staff trials and stuff like that.

0:35:020:35:07

SHOUTS OF ENCOURAGEMENT

0:35:070:35:09

I just sat, I watched. I didn't get involved.

0:35:090:35:11

I didn't want to get involved.

0:35:110:35:13

The entertainment culminates

0:35:130:35:16

in a challenge to drink four litres of milk.

0:35:160:35:19

I can see how people might look at elements of the staff trial night

0:35:190:35:23

and say, "That's not appropriate."

0:35:230:35:24

But they're not looking at the whole context of camp

0:35:240:35:28

and we've been doing this for 20-odd years with very successful results.

0:35:280:35:32

KIDS YELL IN DISGUST

0:35:320:35:34

Having spent most of the summer together,

0:35:450:35:47

the kids are forming strong friendships.

0:35:470:35:50

14-year-old Sebastian has always found it hard to make friends

0:35:530:35:57

with boys his age.

0:35:570:35:59

But here, surrounded by boys who have also struggled with their weight,

0:35:590:36:03

he's finding it easier.

0:36:030:36:05

-I do miss sweets. It's weird.

-What about chocolate?

0:36:050:36:09

-What chocolate could you eat right now?

-Er...any chocolate.

0:36:090:36:14

I can, literally, eat any chocolate.

0:36:140:36:17

I've got on, actually, with a lot of boys. More than I expected.

0:36:170:36:20

I don't really have anybody who I don't like.

0:36:200:36:22

I get along with everybody, so at the moment, everything is good

0:36:220:36:25

and I hope it stays like that.

0:36:250:36:27

Sebastian has become good friends with 17-year-old Jordan.

0:36:270:36:32

Sebastian is really nice. He's, like, from Sweden. Is it...

0:36:320:36:37

-Is it Sweden?

-WOMAN:

-I think he's from Switzerland.

0:36:370:36:41

HE LAUGHS

0:36:410:36:42

-Oh, my God! OK.

-Don't worry, you're not the first...

-Switzerland.

0:36:420:36:46

-Switzerland, that's it.

-Switzerland.

0:36:460:36:49

Essex boy Jordan weighs 18st and is the youngest of four brothers.

0:36:530:36:59

My mum and dad are quite large, quite stocky, quite big.

0:36:590:37:02

And my brothers are quite skinny. All skinny.

0:37:020:37:05

All our three brothers are all into football.

0:37:050:37:08

So always out on a Sunday, Saturday. Jordan is always at home.

0:37:080:37:11

So I think food was his comfort.

0:37:110:37:14

Jordan knows he shouldn't weigh so much.

0:37:140:37:16

I think people judge me, like, "That fat boy over there,"

0:37:160:37:19

or something like that.

0:37:190:37:22

But he just can't help himself.

0:37:220:37:24

Can I get an ice cream, please?

0:37:240:37:25

I've tried to encourage him to lose weight.

0:37:250:37:28

-That's 1.60, please.

-Thank you.

-Thank you. Wait for your change.

0:37:280:37:32

-MUM:

-Every night I come home and cook a nice meal for all the boys.

0:37:320:37:36

But when he goes out,

0:37:360:37:39

takeaways and spur of the moment takeaways and stuff.

0:37:390:37:43

Jordan's weight problems began when he turned 13

0:37:430:37:46

and was able to go out on his own.

0:37:460:37:48

I started putting on weight, buying junk food,

0:37:480:37:52

like, takeaways from a Chinese shop or Indian shop.

0:37:520:37:56

Me telling Jordan to stop eating that

0:37:560:37:58

because it's not good for him, it's like he doesn't want to listen.

0:37:580:38:01

Jordan knows he needs to learn the self discipline

0:38:010:38:05

to help him lose weight.

0:38:050:38:06

Today, it's parents day -

0:38:160:38:18

the first time that the campers will have seen their mums and dads

0:38:180:38:22

since the start of the course.

0:38:220:38:24

It's important to talk about what they've learnt, what those

0:38:260:38:30

experiences have been, to go away as a family and try

0:38:300:38:33

and put some of those things into practice.

0:38:330:38:35

And I say try, because it is always work in progress.

0:38:350:38:38

Oh, I've missed you!

0:38:380:38:41

Jordan's mum and brother have travelled 200 miles from Essex

0:38:430:38:46

to surprise him.

0:38:460:38:48

-MUM:

-I can't wait to see Jordan.

0:38:480:38:50

-I'm really excited. Come on, Zak!

-Yes!

0:38:500:38:54

Yeah.

0:38:540:38:56

Yeah. You all right?

0:39:060:39:08

LAUGHTER

0:39:080:39:09

Hello!

0:39:110:39:12

-Are you happy?

-I am!

0:39:140:39:18

'I felt very emotional when I saw my mum.'

0:39:190:39:22

I was, like...very emotional. But I didn't want to show it.

0:39:220:39:26

I'm over the moon that they've actually travelled four hours

0:39:290:39:32

just to come and see me.

0:39:320:39:33

I'm really, like, shocked and I'm just, like, just so happy!

0:39:330:39:36

They said you're not coming!

0:39:360:39:38

It's not just the chance to see his family.

0:39:380:39:40

-Are you taking me out anywhere?

-Maybe.

-Please take me! Please!

0:39:400:39:44

-Just take me out!

-LAUGHTER

0:39:440:39:46

-I want to get out of here!

-Where do you want to go?

-Anywhere.

0:39:460:39:49

Just anywhere.

0:39:490:39:50

-We'll take you for something to eat.

-Where are we going?

-Dunno.

0:39:500:39:53

-Surprise?

-Take me now. Take me right now.

0:39:530:39:57

And Jordan hasn't forgotten his new mate Sebastian.

0:39:570:40:00

I said to my mum that Sebastian's parents ain't going to come,

0:40:000:40:03

because they live abroad, and I said to my mum,

0:40:030:40:05

"Let's take Sebastian with us to the restaurant."

0:40:050:40:07

This is the first meal since the boys arrived at camp

0:40:070:40:11

where they can eat what they want.

0:40:110:40:13

It's absolutely delicious.

0:40:130:40:15

I'm so happy.

0:40:150:40:16

I'm happy about eating this food.

0:40:160:40:20

It's also a chance to reflect on what they've learnt.

0:40:200:40:23

So, the day you leave here, what will you gain, going home?

0:40:230:40:27

-What would you take home with you?

-Weight. Weight.

0:40:270:40:30

No, what, like skills or experience would you take home with you

0:40:300:40:33

and tell your family?

0:40:330:40:35

I would just know how to, at least, cook healthier things.

0:40:350:40:39

-Your diet?

-Yeah.

-And portion size, as well - portion sizes.

0:40:390:40:42

That's the main thing you're coming for, ain't it? You didn't

0:40:420:40:45

-just come here just to lose weight, or...

-Well, yes, actually.

0:40:450:40:48

I have zero confidence. That's the problem.

0:40:500:40:52

Like, in school, I can't eat in front of people.

0:40:520:40:56

I'm just scared that everyone's looking.

0:40:560:40:58

I used to think like that as well. Exactly like that.

0:40:580:41:01

And, basically, on school days, like,

0:41:010:41:03

I either have to find a place where

0:41:030:41:06

nobody's standing or sitting to eat...

0:41:060:41:08

-OK.

-..or I don't eat anything during the day.

0:41:080:41:12

If I feel like someone's looking at me,

0:41:120:41:14

I go onto my phone to, kind of, isolate myself.

0:41:140:41:17

-Situation sort of thing?

-Yeah.

0:41:170:41:19

I'm just always scared that they're laughing.

0:41:190:41:21

Like, I can't walk through school by myself,

0:41:210:41:23

and every morning, I feel so uncomfortable

0:41:230:41:26

and so insecure, and...

0:41:260:41:28

and until I'm, kind of,

0:41:280:41:29

reached the classroom where my friends are sitting.

0:41:290:41:31

I just think that it's slowly kicking in that...

0:41:310:41:35

that... How insecure I am.

0:41:350:41:37

It's three weeks into the course,

0:41:460:41:48

but 13-year-old Stephen is still not settled,

0:41:480:41:53

and Stephen's dad has been asked to come to the camp.

0:41:530:41:57

The reason we've had to put a camper contract together

0:41:570:42:00

is because Stephen's been wandering around,

0:42:000:42:02

like, out of sessions, quite a bit.

0:42:020:42:04

There's been a few, sort of, slightly violent outbursts.

0:42:040:42:06

Would you say? That is... And that sort of behaviour is absolutely,

0:42:060:42:10

-as you can imagine, unacceptable.

-Not tolerated.

-Yeah.

0:42:100:42:13

It's getting to a stage that,

0:42:130:42:14

if he's going to break this contract,

0:42:140:42:16

he will lose the privilege of being at this programme.

0:42:160:42:18

If you lose this privilege,

0:42:180:42:20

you're going to lose a lot more than this, mate,

0:42:200:42:22

cos if you can't hack this, you're not going to hack the army,

0:42:220:42:24

and soon as you come home, your uniform's gone,

0:42:240:42:27

I'll take you straight out of cadets, yeah?

0:42:270:42:30

And you will be grounded for the rest of the summer holidays.

0:42:300:42:33

It's not going to happen, mate. Don't start getting upset.

0:42:330:42:36

When my dad said, he said about getting me to quit cadets,

0:42:380:42:42

I was like... I was starting to get upset,

0:42:420:42:44

because I really wanted to stay in cadets, to get into the real army.

0:42:440:42:50

You will not get away with behaviour like this if you join the army.

0:42:500:42:53

You'd be out, mate.

0:42:530:42:55

Trust me. I've been there, done that, got the T-shirt.

0:42:550:42:57

You need to stop your stupid, childish behaviour,

0:42:570:43:01

and it needs to stop now. Yeah?

0:43:010:43:05

This opportunity, yeah, is the chance of a lifetime. Don't blow it.

0:43:050:43:10

You're going to do this, you're going to complete it

0:43:100:43:12

and you're going to come out a changed person.

0:43:120:43:14

-All right.

-Yeah? So, it stops today, mate.

0:43:140:43:17

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

-Right.

0:43:170:43:20

Let's have a look at this, then, yeah? So...

0:43:200:43:23

The staff want Stephen to sign a behaviour contract.

0:43:230:43:28

If he breaks it, he will be asked to leave.

0:43:280:43:31

"Do not attempt to harm any member of staff or other campers.

0:43:310:43:34

"Do not swear at any time."

0:43:340:43:36

-OK, so do you understand all those?

-Yeah.

0:43:360:43:39

-Yeah?

-yeah.

0:43:390:43:40

Right, so if you could put your name there, please?

0:43:400:43:45

WOMAN: Thank you very much.

0:43:450:43:48

Good lad.

0:43:480:43:49

'I think if Stephen improves his behaviour,

0:43:490:43:51

'I think he'll be more embraced by the group

0:43:510:43:54

'and he'll be more embraced by staff, as well.'

0:43:540:43:56

We always try and help him,

0:43:560:43:58

but, you know, it is difficult at times.

0:43:580:44:01

Erm, but if he was to go with this,

0:44:010:44:03

and to improve his behaviour,

0:44:030:44:05

he will - he'll reap the benefits of that,

0:44:050:44:07

and he'll get the most out of this process, but also, he'll take

0:44:070:44:11

the things that he's learnt into his day-to-day life when he goes home.

0:44:110:44:14

THEY SHOUT

0:44:210:44:23

WHISTLE BLOWS

0:44:230:44:27

Young people are supposed to do 60 minutes of exercise every day,

0:44:270:44:31

but, nowadays, only a quarter of kids actually manage this.

0:44:310:44:36

Our attitude to physical activity, sport or exercise is,

0:44:360:44:40

doing something you enjoy, doing it with your friends,

0:44:400:44:43

and doing it in a way that makes you happy

0:44:430:44:45

and feel confident about yourself.

0:44:450:44:46

Right, guys!

0:44:460:44:47

In the UK, one in three kids are classified as obese.

0:44:470:44:51

At camp, the idea is that being surrounded by others with

0:44:510:44:54

similar weight issues means that fear and embarrassment won't stop them

0:44:540:44:58

taking part in sport and exercise.

0:44:580:45:01

The good thing is, one doesn't feel scared,

0:45:020:45:05

because everybody around you came here for the same reason.

0:45:050:45:09

It's to change your life and,

0:45:090:45:11

if one does not feel nervous that somebody could be making fun of you,

0:45:110:45:15

then, it's a pleasant environment to be in.

0:45:150:45:18

People here are, like, the same size or a bit bigger.

0:45:180:45:21

'They're like... I feel, like, a bit more comfortable with them.

0:45:210:45:24

'It's like we're all here for a reason,'

0:45:240:45:26

and we just need to, like, get it done.

0:45:260:45:28

The boys are taking part in a swimming lesson.

0:45:300:45:35

When I go swimming here, I'll be more confident because

0:45:350:45:37

other people are, like, the same size as me.

0:45:370:45:41

But less than 24 hours after signing his behaviour contract...

0:45:410:45:45

WHISTLE BLOWS

0:45:450:45:47

..Stephen's back in trouble.

0:45:470:45:49

Stephen's had a couple of issues, this morning. In the pool,

0:45:530:45:55

he got into a bit of a scuffle with one of the other lads.

0:45:550:45:58

I asked him to get out. He then swore at me.

0:45:580:46:01

BLEEP! BLEEP!

0:46:010:46:03

That's not my decision, whether he will be leaving camp.

0:46:030:46:06

I'll speak to management,

0:46:060:46:07

but for now, he is on camp and we'll go from there.

0:46:070:46:10

Following an emergency staff meeting,

0:46:100:46:13

camp leaders Tay and Josh seek out Stephen.

0:46:130:46:17

Making a blockade?

0:46:170:46:18

-What? Playing a game.

-STEPHEN LAUGHS

0:46:180:46:21

Stephen, just sit down here, please, mate.

0:46:230:46:25

NOKIA RINGTONE PLAYS

0:46:250:46:28

All right, so, remember yesterday,

0:46:280:46:30

when we filled this out and signed this up?

0:46:300:46:32

-Yeah.

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

0:46:320:46:34

We went through it and you signed it, OK?

0:46:340:46:38

This morning, at swimming,

0:46:380:46:39

you've broke no less than four of the conditions on here.

0:46:390:46:43

You have now made a decision to break this contract.

0:46:430:46:47

Your dad is going to be coming to pick you up later today.

0:46:470:46:51

-Do you understand?

-STEPHEN SOBS

0:46:510:46:53

Can you just give me one more chance, please?

0:46:530:46:56

-And this time I won't mess it up.

-HE SNIFFS

0:46:560:47:00

I'm sorry, but it's... The decision's been made.

0:47:000:47:03

But I want to stay here, though!

0:47:030:47:07

Stephen did get really upset and, in my opinion, it was genuine,

0:47:070:47:10

but we need all of the kids to get on board with the programme

0:47:100:47:15

and our ethos as quickly as possible,

0:47:150:47:16

just without having to enforce it on them.

0:47:160:47:19

I want to stay at this camp until my days are up.

0:47:190:47:22

-HE SOBS

-I just want one more chance, please.

0:47:220:47:24

You've had your final chance.

0:47:240:47:26

You've had numerous chances and we've been explaining to you,

0:47:260:47:29

over and over again, how important it is,

0:47:290:47:31

and this is, I'm afraid, it's the only way this is going to sink in.

0:47:310:47:34

All right?

0:47:340:47:36

HE SNIFFS

0:47:400:47:42

I didn't think they'd follow through and kick me out,

0:47:420:47:44

but obviously they did.

0:47:440:47:45

The thing I thought was, "Oh, no, I've messed it up."

0:47:450:47:48

Stephen's time at camp is over.

0:47:510:47:53

Stephen definitely showed positive signs.

0:47:580:48:00

The fact that he wanted to join the army

0:48:000:48:02

was a great incentive for him to keep...

0:48:020:48:06

keep going with this and we were trying to build on that.

0:48:060:48:09

It's just a shame that it was cut so short.

0:48:090:48:12

'It's just, this minute, it clicked.'

0:48:120:48:15

I do need to learn the lesson

0:48:150:48:17

instead of messing around all my life.

0:48:170:48:19

'Just behaving, but it's actually too late now.'

0:48:190:48:21

HE SOBS

0:48:260:48:29

'I was very disappointed in him,

0:48:310:48:32

'and he knew I was disappointed in him.'

0:48:320:48:34

I would... I would've liked him to complete what he'd set out to do.

0:48:340:48:38

'The hardest part is some of the kids

0:48:410:48:43

'that we couldn't get through to.

0:48:430:48:45

'I always get disappointed with it, but at the same time,

0:48:450:48:47

'I always know it's coming. You cannot save all of them.'

0:48:470:48:52

You just try your best. That's all you can do.

0:48:520:48:54

I'll say this about every child that comes here -

0:48:580:49:01

they will benefit, in some way, shape or form.

0:49:010:49:05

ENGINE PURRS

0:49:050:49:07

Two, one, off you go!

0:49:150:49:18

Good.

0:49:180:49:19

When she arrived, 14-year-old Rinat hated the camp,

0:49:240:49:27

especially all the compulsory exercise,

0:49:270:49:31

but as the weeks have passed, she's finally started to engage.

0:49:310:49:36

'My attitudes to food has changed,'

0:49:360:49:38

and, like, I see that I'm always wanting to go to the gym,

0:49:380:49:42

or always asking to go to the gym.

0:49:420:49:43

I'm like, "What's wrong with me? Why am I wanting to go to the gym?"

0:49:430:49:46

And, it's like, I'm really happy that it's happened,

0:49:460:49:49

because, like, it's so good to go the gym,

0:49:490:49:51

and it's so good not to think about food like I was thinking about food,

0:49:510:49:54

so I'm really happy this change happened.

0:49:540:49:58

Go! Off you go!

0:49:580:50:00

Today, it's the last two-mile challenge.

0:50:000:50:03

Previously, Rinat refused to run the course

0:50:030:50:06

and was disqualified for taking a short-cut.

0:50:060:50:10

Now she's determined to complete the challenge.

0:50:100:50:13

So, I will try. Maybe I'll just walk, but I just want to finish it.

0:50:130:50:17

I will try to run, but I will do the best I can.

0:50:170:50:20

I really hope I can, because I'm really, really bad at running,

0:50:200:50:23

so I will just try to do my best.

0:50:230:50:25

But what the two-mile challenge does is,

0:50:250:50:27

cos it's up to them to challenge themselves,

0:50:270:50:29

they can't win or they can't lose.

0:50:290:50:31

All they can do is better their result,

0:50:310:50:33

and every week that they see progress,

0:50:330:50:36

they then take ownership of that - a challenge, in itself -

0:50:360:50:40

and push themselves harder and harder and harder.

0:50:400:50:44

That is demonstrating success, not failure.

0:50:440:50:47

Can you move your legs a little bit quicker? Like this.

0:50:470:50:51

Oh, my God, my legs are burning.

0:50:510:50:53

Rinat pushes herself harder than she has ever done before.

0:50:530:50:56

You can do it. You can do it. What are we going to do? Yes.

0:50:560:51:00

-Come on!

-Come on!

0:51:110:51:13

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:51:130:51:16

SHE PANTS

0:51:230:51:26

-SHE PANTS

-I can't breathe.

0:51:320:51:34

Kat, you know how much time I did?

0:51:340:51:38

29.47.

0:51:380:51:40

-29? I did less than 30.

-SHE BREATHES HEAVILY

0:51:400:51:44

It's a personal best for Rinat.

0:51:440:51:47

I'm happy because I ran.

0:51:470:51:49

I don't really care about the time, I'm just happy I ran.

0:51:490:51:52

I'm really proud of myself.

0:51:520:51:54

The five-week course is coming to an end,

0:52:000:52:03

and today it's the final weigh-in.

0:52:030:52:05

That's 2.4kg, which is really good.

0:52:080:52:11

Well done.

0:52:110:52:13

When her twin sister left two weeks into the course,

0:52:130:52:16

15-year-old Amy struggled, but stuck with it.

0:52:160:52:21

She arrived weighing 16st

0:52:210:52:24

and was at serious risk of a heart attack or stroke.

0:52:240:52:28

MACHINE BEEPS

0:52:280:52:31

-So, you've lost 2.5kg, which is...

-Well done.

0:52:320:52:36

Amy has lost more weight than any other girl on camp -

0:52:360:52:38

over 1st in total.

0:52:380:52:41

5.85 lbs. Well done.

0:52:410:52:43

-Well done, you.

-I wasn't expecting anywhere near that.

0:52:430:52:46

I do think my biggest achievement is the weight I've lost,

0:52:460:52:49

cos I never thought I could.

0:52:490:52:50

Like, I came here expecting to lose about, like, 2kg,

0:52:500:52:53

something like that,

0:52:530:52:55

so, yeah, I think I've really, like, pushed myself

0:52:550:52:57

and done better than I thought I could.

0:52:570:53:00

Despite her new-found love of exercise,

0:53:000:53:02

for Rinat, her results are surprising.

0:53:020:53:05

-You've not put weight on.

-Yes, I could.

0:53:060:53:09

No, last week, you weighed 70.9 and now it's 70.7.

0:53:090:53:13

-It's just...

-No?

0:53:130:53:15

-Yeah, but it fluctuates every day.

-That's normal.

0:53:150:53:17

Yeah, like, every day, you weigh a different weight.

0:53:170:53:19

What did I lose, 200g?

0:53:190:53:21

For Professor Paul Gately,

0:53:230:53:25

it's not the amount of weight that's lost,

0:53:250:53:27

but the change in the campers' attitude that's most important.

0:53:270:53:31

'It's not that they learn how many calories are in an apple,'

0:53:310:53:35

'it's actually that they learn'

0:53:350:53:36

how to overcome the many barriers and challenges that they face.

0:53:360:53:41

This could be the first step towards a healthy future for Rinat.

0:53:410:53:46

'I want to lose, like, 20-25kg altogether,'

0:53:460:53:50

and I really hope I can do it at home, with the help of everyone,

0:53:500:53:54

and I did already, here, a little bit,

0:53:540:53:56

but I hope I can continue the change at home,

0:53:560:54:00

and I hope I really can do it, because if I can do it,

0:54:000:54:03

that will be, like... I will be, like, so happy...

0:54:030:54:06

It will be, like, the best thing in my life, I think,

0:54:060:54:08

if I really can do it.

0:54:080:54:10

It's the last night at camp, and staff have organised

0:54:150:54:18

a graduation ceremony to celebrate the campers' achievements.

0:54:180:54:22

Welcome, everyone, to graduation!

0:54:220:54:25

CHEERING

0:54:250:54:28

Most inspirational, without a doubt,

0:54:280:54:31

-it's Sebastian.

-CHEERING

0:54:310:54:33

When I get home, I just need to make sure that no-one pushes me -

0:54:330:54:37

that I push myself.

0:54:370:54:38

That I'm the person who shows the will to progress,

0:54:380:54:42

and to lose weight, to live healthier.

0:54:420:54:46

For best singer,

0:54:460:54:47

-does anyone know who this is?

-CHEERING

0:54:470:54:50

Jordan!

0:54:500:54:51

Yes, Jordan, up you come, lad.

0:54:510:54:53

CHEERING

0:54:530:54:55

I've lost over a stone at camp

0:54:550:54:56

and I'm very, very happy with myself.

0:54:560:54:59

I'm very confident. I feel much better in myself

0:54:590:55:02

and I feel like I can achieve much more, like, in the future.

0:55:020:55:06

It's been a pleasure watching you grow over the last five weeks -

0:55:060:55:10

Little Miss Caring, Amy.

0:55:100:55:12

CHEERING

0:55:120:55:15

I really don't want to go home. Like, I'm going to miss it so much,

0:55:150:55:17

and it's been, like, the biggest, like,

0:55:170:55:19

opportunity I've had in, like, so far,

0:55:190:55:22

and it's just been so good.

0:55:220:55:23

-I've really enjoyed it.

-THEY SOB

0:55:230:55:26

Between them, the campers have lost over 50st.

0:55:260:55:30

'My attitude has changed, to food and to sports.'

0:55:300:55:33

Now I just want to do, like, sports as much as I can,

0:55:330:55:37

and I just, like, I just...

0:55:370:55:39

I just ask to wake up at 6.30am in the morning to go to the gym.

0:55:390:55:43

It's like, my attitude has, like, seriously changed.

0:55:430:55:47

Since camp, Rinat goes to the gym three times a week after school

0:55:490:55:53

and has cut down on both sweets and portion sizes.

0:55:530:55:58

Stephen has lost a further 2st and is still a keen cadet.

0:55:580:56:02

He has also started anger management classes at school.

0:56:020:56:06

Sebastian has maintained the weight he lost and taken up hiking.

0:56:060:56:10

He has overcome his fear of eating in public and is making new friends.

0:56:100:56:15

Jordan has lost another 2st and every day after college,

0:56:150:56:19

he does a two-mile run.

0:56:190:56:21

Amy and Beth have lost a total of 73lb.

0:56:210:56:25

Amy's been discharged from hospital

0:56:250:56:27

and is no longer at risk from high blood pressure.
