-Us Brits are amongst the fattest in the world. -Run for the Nando! | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07

Welcome to a super-sized summer camp | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
that claims to have the answers to tackling the obesity epidemic. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:24
Diets and boot camps don't work, because they're forcing something | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
on somebody that they may not be ready for. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
But its methods are controversial. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
-Nice big, healthy lunch. -Oh, yeah. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
The kids dine out on fast food. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
-You know that's being greedy, Jordan. -How am I being greedy? | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
Two litres of milk? Would you drink that a day? | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
Chips and pizza are on the menu. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
My first impressions of the food - I would like more. Obviously. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:50
It's why I'm here. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
And the staff are barely older than the campers themselves. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:55
Did anyone play with their Barbies when they were little? | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
They're ridiculous. They don't have a clue. | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
Telling you, don't have a clue. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
For some campers, it'll be the longest five weeks of their lives. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:05
So hard! | 0:01:05 | 0:01:06
But for others, it's life-changing. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
Does this radical approach work? | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
And is this really the answer to teenage obesity? | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
What a waste of effort and time. | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
Our camp gets results. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
I'm going to go with the chips and burger. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
Get that belly movement up and down. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
Jiggle, jiggle, jiggle, jiggle, jiggle! | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
It's week one at Europe's only residential weight loss camp | 0:01:33 | 0:01:38
for young people. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
The 86 campers should all be in exercise sessions. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
You've got to start making attempts on the ball. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
But 13-year-old Stephen is refusing to take part. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:51
I'm missing home and I just wanted to... | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
just wanted to pack my bags and go home. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
INAUDIBLE CONVERSATION | 0:02:34 | 0:02:42
Right, give us two minutes. Sit down there. Let's go and have a chat. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:48
It can be difficult for these kids. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:51
Some of them have never been away from home, | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
never been from their parents | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
and then, they're doing things that they've never done as well, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
so it's all very intimidating. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
It's a new environment, which is intimidating alone. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
It just takes a bit of time. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
Stephen lives with his mum and dad in Scarborough and weighs nearly 14st. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:27
I normally spend my money on loads of food, like burgers, chips. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:32
It makes me feel quite sad when I'm at school, | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
when they're calling me stuff. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
But I just have to put up with it. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
All of Stephen's family are trying to help him lose weight, | 0:03:40 | 0:03:45
including his nan. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:46
-What are you having, Steve? You've cut down, haven't you? -Yeah, two. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:51
-Two? I thought you only had one now. -Oh, one and a half, I think. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:56
I think one will be enough. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
We tried with him, you know, | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
to cut him down and that, but he'll still sneak and get something. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:04
Stephen is a key member of his local cadets. | 0:04:04 | 0:04:07
His ambition is to join the army. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:09
The army, I think, is teaching him respect and discipline | 0:04:09 | 0:04:14
and I want to keep him on the straight and narrow. | 0:04:14 | 0:04:16
I want him to go down paths that are going to open doors for him. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
That's it. Beautiful. Come on, arms up. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
That is one of my motivations. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
Yeah, you've got to be quite fit to get in the army, | 0:04:25 | 0:04:29
to like run around in the battlefield and that. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:33
But what I need to do mostly | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
is just stop eating all like fatty foods and start eating healthy. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:39
-Stephen? You like pork, don't you? -Yes, please. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:43
Once he's got that weight off him and he's got more | 0:04:46 | 0:04:48
confidence in himself, | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
I think that'll, you know, be the making of him. | 0:04:50 | 0:04:53
The staff have persuaded Stephen to stay. | 0:04:55 | 0:05:00
But a few days later, | 0:05:00 | 0:05:01
and he's still struggling to cope with the structure and rules. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
Leave my shirt alone! Leave my shirt alone! Why? Don't touch me, bitch! | 0:05:05 | 0:05:12
Don't touch me, bitch! | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
I've only got a red one. I've only got that one. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
Yeah. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:29 | |
I hate snitches. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:43
That's one thing I do fucking hate. Snitches. | 0:05:43 | 0:05:47
The thing I've been doing is just... I... Flicking their ears. | 0:05:47 | 0:05:51
I love winding people up. It's funny as! | 0:05:51 | 0:05:56
Stephen, will you come and sit on these red chairs, for a sec? | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
I just need a little chat, buddy. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:00
Stephen has been summoned to see camp leader Tay. | 0:06:00 | 0:06:03
I've heard that a staff member has asked you to go to | 0:06:03 | 0:06:06
isolation on the table. You downright refused. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
And I just want you to know that that kind of stuff doesn't fly. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:13
You listen to every member of staff, I don't care who it is. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:16
We're all trying to help. We're not trying to single you out. | 0:06:16 | 0:06:18
We're not trying to get you in trouble, | 0:06:18 | 0:06:20
cos we want what's best for you. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:22
We want you to develop from here in every way possible, OK? | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
So what we're going to do is | 0:06:26 | 0:06:27
you're going to go into isolation, all right? | 0:06:27 | 0:06:30
-Right. -Is that all right? -That's fine. -OK. -Yeah. -All right. | 0:06:30 | 0:06:35
-Good man. Let's not let it happen again, right? -All right. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
Cheers, buddy. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:39
Hopefully he took it on board and listened and we'll go from there. | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
Hopefully, this is the end of it. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
Stephen will have to stay in isolation until staff | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
decide that he has learnt his lesson. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
My behaviour has been a little bit... | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
I have been a little bit silly throughout the days. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
But it's mostly just like I'm missing home | 0:06:56 | 0:06:59
and I just want to go home. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:01
The camp was founded 16 years ago by leading childhood obesity | 0:07:01 | 0:07:07
expert Professor Paul Gately, to help kids like Stephen. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:12
It's not a boot camp. We don't force anyone to do anything. | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
But we do work with them and encourage them and support them, | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
because one in three children have a weight-related problem | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
that will both shorten their life | 0:07:20 | 0:07:21
and reduce the quality of their life. | 0:07:21 | 0:07:23
Over five weeks, the campers are put through an intensive | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
course of workshops and exercise sessions | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
led by a staff of volunteers with a background in sports science, | 0:07:30 | 0:07:34
nutrition and education. | 0:07:34 | 0:07:38
We've found as we've worked through different staff mixes that, | 0:07:38 | 0:07:41
actually, a younger workforce relates much better to the | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
young people on camp. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:46
14-year-old Sebastian is already standing out | 0:07:48 | 0:07:52
because of his positive attitude. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:54
I'd describe Sebastian as very polite. He is hard-working. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:58
He does everything he's told, um, very organised. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:02
Likes to keep his room clean. | 0:08:02 | 0:08:05
The campers are responsible for cleaning their own dorms. | 0:08:05 | 0:08:10
I've cleaned the dorms in the last two and a half weeks | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
for like seven times, I think? | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
I'm very hygiene-conscious. Everything normally has to be clean. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:24
That was on the desk! | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
I actually really enjoy cleaning. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
I can't understand how people live in dirt, | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
so even the smallest things really, really annoy me. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
I enjoy it, in a way - it's something that relaxes me, | 0:08:35 | 0:08:39
so it's just fun in my eyes. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
This has been bothering me for ages. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:44
Switch off the lights. You are absolutely kidding me, right? | 0:08:55 | 0:09:01
That's been bothering me for the whole time I was in this room! | 0:09:01 | 0:09:05
Sebastian is over six foot tall and weighs 19st. | 0:09:07 | 0:09:13
When I look at myself, I normally degrade myself, | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
because I'm definitely overweight. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
I wouldn't be surprised if I was classed as obese. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
I'm never sure what people think of me, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
because people judge you on how you look before they even know you | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
and I've had that very, very often. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:30
Sebastian was born in the UK, but moved to Switzerland | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
with his family when he was just four years old. | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
His size has always been a problem and, in the past, | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
led to bullying at school. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:41
Children started commenting and making fun of my weight | 0:09:41 | 0:09:45
and then, I became incredibly unhappy, incredibly scared. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:52
They would call him nasty names and they would say that he's fat | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
and he's not somebody that can stand up for himself in that very moment. | 0:09:55 | 0:10:00
He would quite often cry in front of those children, which then, sort of, | 0:10:00 | 0:10:04
triggered their will to carry on with the bullying. | 0:10:04 | 0:10:07
As a result of the bullying, | 0:10:09 | 0:10:11
Sebastian finds it hard to make friends with boys his own age | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
and spends most of his time with his sister. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:17
We eat together, we laugh together, | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
we wake up and go to school every morning. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:22
Although the problems at school were dealt with, | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
Sebastian still finds it hard to eat in front of people. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:29
There are days where I'd hardly eat anything at school, | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
so when I get home, I just raid the fridge. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
As soon as he sets foot into the house, he's in his element. | 0:10:35 | 0:10:39
He's got control over the fridge and the cupboard. | 0:10:39 | 0:10:42
But he never tends to a carrot, it's always the crisps that he goes for. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:46
I'm hungry, I don't know what I fancy, | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
so I'll eat everything that I can get my hands on. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
I sit in front of the TV and I just eat. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:56
Now his parents have paid for him to go to camp, | 0:10:56 | 0:10:59
hoping he can deal with some of his issues and perhaps find new friends. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:03
So today, we're going to be talking about self-identity | 0:11:05 | 0:11:08
and think good, feel good. Is it just Josh...? | 0:11:08 | 0:11:10
This morning, Sebastian is in a workshop | 0:11:10 | 0:11:12
which focuses on building confidence. | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
Self-esteem is how happy we are on the inside, who we are as a person, | 0:11:14 | 0:11:18
and body confidence is how we feel about ourselves on the outside, | 0:11:18 | 0:11:21
the way that we look physically. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:23
Particularly today, we will be talking about some things | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
that are quite personal. | 0:11:26 | 0:11:27
In all the conversations I've had with kids that are overweight | 0:11:27 | 0:11:30
and obese, many of them talk in a way that it's almost like daily | 0:11:30 | 0:11:33
torture is what they go through. People are picking on them, | 0:11:33 | 0:11:36
people are judging them, | 0:11:36 | 0:11:38
people are calling them names and it just isn't a nice place to be | 0:11:38 | 0:11:41
and it certainly isn't a nice place to be for a teenager. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:44
Has anyone here ever been bullied for anything? | 0:11:44 | 0:11:47
Quite a few people putting their hands up now. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
So a lot of these things that we find with bullies, | 0:11:50 | 0:11:52
a lot of the time, bullies will pick on you just because they want to | 0:11:52 | 0:11:56
pick on you, with something they can see from a distance. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
They won't bother to come to you, take the time to get to know you. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:02
It's, a lot of the time, visual things. | 0:12:02 | 0:12:04
Sebastian and the group have been asked to write a list of what | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
they think is good and bad about themselves. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
Jot down how you would like people to describe you, or how you | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
feel people would describe you. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:18
Say, I'm a boy, I'm good at maths... | 0:12:18 | 0:12:21
Writing the bad things down, it wasn't really easy. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:25
It was hard because, again, | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
it brought back all the memories | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
and it just really made me sad. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
(Yeah, yeah, of course you can.) | 0:12:33 | 0:12:35
I just got a bit emotional and I went outside because I was | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
scared that if I would cry in front of the other boys, they would laugh. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:42
I'm always scared that that list is going to be in the back of my head. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:46
Names that I've been called. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:50
One can't stop thinking about them sometimes and | 0:12:50 | 0:12:54
when everyone wants to do something, | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
one thinks about that list and | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
it kind of...degrades you in a way. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:04
What got you upset? Was it just thinking about these things or...? | 0:13:06 | 0:13:09
-The past. -The past. What sort of things? -Bullying. | 0:13:09 | 0:13:14
-Main thing. -Yeah. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
Although other people may think of these as a negative thing, | 0:13:17 | 0:13:20
are they always? | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22
Sometimes they might be personal opinions. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:26
Also, things like being controlling, is that a bad thing? | 0:13:26 | 0:13:30
I know that sometimes people might say to you, "Oh, my God, | 0:13:30 | 0:13:33
"you might be controlling," and you'd be like, "Oh, God, I am." | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
Like we said with that video, when someone says, "Like a girl," | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
should it be an insult? | 0:13:39 | 0:13:41
It shouldn't be, so lots of things like that. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:44
What about these ones? These are all really good things about you | 0:13:44 | 0:13:47
and there's some of these on here that I've not really seen before. | 0:13:47 | 0:13:51
Hygienic, that's a really good one. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:53
It's a really good thing to have in your life. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:55
-Do you want to rip it up? -Throw it! -Yes! | 0:14:00 | 0:14:03
You can throw it over there, if you want, rip it up. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:06
Get rid of it! | 0:14:06 | 0:14:08
-Whoo! -Yeah! | 0:14:09 | 0:14:11
Sebastian might have thrown away his worries, but he's too neat | 0:14:13 | 0:14:17
and tidy to drop litter. | 0:14:17 | 0:14:18
-It's lunchtime. -Can I get sweet-and-sour chicken? | 0:14:24 | 0:14:27
Children who grow up obese are likely to die ten years younger than | 0:14:30 | 0:14:34
kids who are a healthy weight. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:38
But mealtimes on camp offer some surprising options. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:42
There's not bad foods, there's only bad diets, so, therefore, | 0:14:42 | 0:14:46
it's about helping them understand, | 0:14:46 | 0:14:49
I can have chips and I can have a pizza, | 0:14:49 | 0:14:51
but I need to mix that with pasta dishes and salad dishes. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:56
It's about trying to get it right 80% of the time | 0:14:56 | 0:14:58
and the weight will take care of itself. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:00
If they're sticking to the sort of principles and the rules that | 0:15:00 | 0:15:03
we've given them, it's much easier | 0:15:03 | 0:15:05
to manage their weight for the future. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
Just that, thank you. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:09
15-year-old twins Amy and Beth are finding it hard to settle in. | 0:15:09 | 0:15:14
Roughly half of the campers are paid for privately. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:25
The others, like Amy and Beth, | 0:15:25 | 0:15:26
are sent by the NHS or their local authority. | 0:15:26 | 0:15:30
I got referred by my doctor because I've got hypertension, | 0:15:30 | 0:15:33
that's high blood pressure. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:35
It could like resort into strokes and heart attacks. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
Twin sister Beth is at risk of developing the same conditions. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
We're the same size, we're going through the same things. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:45
If it doesn't, like, stop, I'd probably get it as well. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:49
Obesity is recognised as the modern-day plague. | 0:15:49 | 0:15:52
85% of kids who are overweight and obese during childhood will be | 0:15:52 | 0:15:55
overweight and obese adults, so it will cost our society | 0:15:55 | 0:15:59
lots of money, but the impact on those lives will be significant. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:03
So, therefore, addressing it early is absolutely a must. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:07
The girls each way 16st. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
I don't think we really have a relationship with food, do we? | 0:16:10 | 0:16:13
I think it's just an excuse. We just use it as comfort, like, | 0:16:13 | 0:16:17
when we've not got anything else to do, bored, upset. | 0:16:17 | 0:16:21
I choose the wrong types of foods. So, like I say, if I went out | 0:16:21 | 0:16:24
with friends, I'd rather go get a McDonald's than like a salad. | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
It's not only the twins who have a dangerous relationship with food. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:34
Their mum Louise has battled with various eating disorders for decades. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:39
I started off with bulimia, which is eating and vomiting. | 0:16:39 | 0:16:44
And, unfortunately, I've turned the other way now where I just eat very, | 0:16:44 | 0:16:49
very little... | 0:16:49 | 0:16:51
and my weight's dropped and I'd rather starve than be sick, | 0:16:51 | 0:16:56
and that's not a message I want to give to the children. | 0:16:56 | 0:17:00
I think it's really strange living with a parent who | 0:17:00 | 0:17:03
is on the opposite spectrum of an eating disorder. | 0:17:03 | 0:17:06
It's a bit strange having a parent who is undereating | 0:17:06 | 0:17:08
as we're overeating. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:11
The girls have been sent to camp by their doctor to try | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
and address their own food issues. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:16
But a few days in and Beth is finding it hard to cope being | 0:17:18 | 0:17:21
away from her mum. | 0:17:21 | 0:17:23
Beth's not really happy with staying here at the camp. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:26
So, we're having to make a decision whether to, like, go back or stay. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:30
Amy calls their mum to discuss the situation. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:36
She's just not interested in like... | 0:17:36 | 0:17:39
She's not getting involved with anyone else. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:41
She's got her whole mind set on coming home. | 0:17:41 | 0:17:44
-'Are you being mean to her or something?' -No. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
She's got one person she's talking to | 0:17:47 | 0:17:50
and she's not interested in anyone else. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:52
She won't get involved properly in, like, activities and stuff, | 0:17:52 | 0:17:55
so what does she expect? | 0:17:55 | 0:17:57
If you all have a think... | 0:17:57 | 0:17:58
I think this just isn't really for Beth | 0:17:58 | 0:18:00
and I think she's quite uncomfortable here. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
She just wants to be with family and friends. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
It's the next day and Beth has decided she wants to go home. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:12
I think they'll kind of miss each other, | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
but then, I think it's a good chance for them | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
each to have individual time, you know, | 0:18:19 | 0:18:22
where people get that this is just Amy | 0:18:22 | 0:18:24
and Beth gets a bit of time at home with me | 0:18:24 | 0:18:26
and her friends, and it's just Beth. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
I think they'll do all right without each other, though. Fingers crossed. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:35
For the first time in their lives, twins Beth and Amy will be apart. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:39
-Do you think you're going to miss Beth? -I know... | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
It's not like she's going somewhere random. | 0:18:46 | 0:18:48
It's just that she's going home, so that's fine. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:51
So I don't think I'll miss her as much. | 0:18:51 | 0:18:53
I think it's going to be more, like, weird. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:55
It's just going to be like generally weird not having Beth being there. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:59
No, it'll be fine. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:00
Beth left me a letter and it says, "Amy, I wish I could stay | 0:19:08 | 0:19:12
"longer with you, but I'm so proud and I know you will do amazing. | 0:19:12 | 0:19:16
"Remember I love you infinite amounts. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:18
"I am and I will be thinking of you every minute. | 0:19:18 | 0:19:21
"Love you lots, Betty." | 0:19:21 | 0:19:23
Bit awkward. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:25
I don't like being my own in a room, it's, like, really boring. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
And, like, it's really uncomfortable in the night, | 0:19:28 | 0:19:31
but I'm all right, it's all right. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:34
I'm so depressing. How depressing am I? | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
People are going to start crying. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:39
Phone calls home are restricted to three times a week | 0:19:44 | 0:19:47
and all mobile devices are taken off the kids in the hope | 0:19:47 | 0:19:51
they will focus on the camp and socialise with one another. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:55
But being away from family and friends can be very difficult. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:59
If I can deal with my homesickness the way that | 0:20:02 | 0:20:04
I want to deal with my weight | 0:20:04 | 0:20:06
and that's... I want to deal with my weight very extremely, | 0:20:06 | 0:20:10
-then, that would be just better for all of us. -I would say | 0:20:10 | 0:20:12
it's getting to me a bit, yeah, missing everyone at home, | 0:20:12 | 0:20:15
my friends. Like, missing parties and stuff. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:19
It's getting to me. | 0:20:20 | 0:20:22
I'm missing a couple of things while I'm at camp, | 0:20:24 | 0:20:27
like my mum, my dad, my dog... | 0:20:27 | 0:20:29
and my PlayStation. | 0:20:29 | 0:20:31
Ten days into the course and Stephen has made a decision. | 0:20:33 | 0:20:37
Still missing home and unable to cope with life at camp, | 0:20:37 | 0:20:40
he's packed his bags and wants to leave. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:43
You've got a decision to make. You've got a really good opportunity | 0:20:43 | 0:20:47
here to set a really good example, | 0:20:47 | 0:20:49
to show all your friends at home, show all your family, | 0:20:49 | 0:20:53
like, potentially show the world how good you can be. | 0:20:53 | 0:20:58
Stephen was very much one thing or the other, it seemed. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:02
There was a lot of times he might be crying that he wants to stay, | 0:21:02 | 0:21:04
or crying that he wants to leave and it must be a difficult... | 0:21:04 | 0:21:09
He's at a difficult age, the kind of early adolescence, | 0:21:09 | 0:21:11
where he's not sure... | 0:21:11 | 0:21:13
not sure what he wants to be, not sure what he wants to do. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:17
Hiya. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:18 | |
Stephen's been allowed to phone his parents. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:21
Can you come pick me up, please? No, I've packed my bags and everything. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:26
I want to leave. | 0:21:26 | 0:21:27
No, but I want to come home cos I don't like it. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:30
I've packed my bags and everything. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
Mm. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:37 | |
What? | 0:21:40 | 0:21:41 | |
All right. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:44
Yeah. | 0:21:47 | 0:21:49 | |
HE SOBS | 0:21:50 | 0:21:53
I'm not used to hearing them words off my dad. | 0:21:57 | 0:22:00
They make me a little bit emotional. | 0:22:00 | 0:22:03
Stephen's grandad died four years ago. | 0:22:03 | 0:22:07
My grandad meant a lot to me. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:09
I always used to spend the days with him. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:12
And he just really meant a lot to me. | 0:22:12 | 0:22:15
He loved his grandad. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:20
He was just a nice bloke. He was just a down-to-earth bloke. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:24
He told you black was black and white was white. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:27
Yeah, he was a nice guy, was my dad. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:31
Once I heard my grandad's name mentioned I was like, | 0:22:31 | 0:22:34
"I've got to carry on." I don't want to make him upset or... | 0:22:34 | 0:22:38
unproud of me. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
Stephen decides to give the camp one more go. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:44
Every day, the campers are required to complete at least three hours | 0:22:58 | 0:23:02
of physical exercise. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:05
I guess it's hard. Like, some things like swimming and stuff that I like | 0:23:05 | 0:23:09
and there's other things, like, running and stuff | 0:23:09 | 0:23:12
they make you do that I don't really like. | 0:23:12 | 0:23:15
I really don't like football and stuff, really I hate this | 0:23:15 | 0:23:18
and I can be just a goalkeeper | 0:23:18 | 0:23:21
and I'm still just standing and don't do nothing. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:24
I really hate it so much. | 0:23:24 | 0:23:25
This morning, the girls are in the gym playing dodge ball. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:31
Got you, Chloe. Chloe! | 0:23:32 | 0:23:35
Don't you dare pretend that I didn't get your head. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:39
But without her twin sister, | 0:23:39 | 0:23:41
Amy is struggling to find her place in the group. | 0:23:41 | 0:23:44
Fat bitch coming through. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:45
I hate dodge ball, it's so bad and I can't play dodge ball. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:52
So I thought, there's no point. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:53
No-one goes by the rules either. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
You get hit by the ball and they pretend that they haven't, | 0:23:56 | 0:23:59
even though about half the people there have seen them. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:02
What the heck, are you joking? | 0:24:02 | 0:24:04
"I didn't get hit by the ball, I'm still in." No, you're not. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:07
If they're not going to play by the rules, I'm not. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:11
What the hell?! | 0:24:11 | 0:24:13
-Amy, you're out. -Get away. I'm not out! I am not out. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:17
She caught it, you're out. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
Please. You're out. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:22
You ginger bitch. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:23
Amy is one of the heaviest girls at camp | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
and seems to have lost her motivation. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:32
Ow! Ow! What are you doing? | 0:24:32 | 0:24:34
You got in my way, sorry. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:35
The staff are worried about her attitude | 0:24:35 | 0:24:38
and its potential impact on her progress. | 0:24:38 | 0:24:42
Amy's quite difficult in changing her mind, | 0:24:42 | 0:24:44
so if she's set on not doing something, she won't do it. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:48
I think Amy does need to focus a bit more, to kind of engage a bit more. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:52
Obviously, the more she's engaging and focusing, | 0:24:52 | 0:24:54
the more she's going to learn. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:56
So we can kind of help her think about the long-term plan. | 0:24:56 | 0:24:59
Every week, campers take part in a two-mile challenge | 0:25:09 | 0:25:14
running a cross-country route around the campus. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:18
Three, two, one, go, go! | 0:25:18 | 0:25:22
The challenge is not about the time it takes to complete the course, | 0:25:24 | 0:25:28
but the attitude the campers show towards it. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:32
A two-mile challenge on camp is a really useful | 0:25:32 | 0:25:34
indication of both the camper's fitness | 0:25:34 | 0:25:37
and also their motivation to lose weight. | 0:25:37 | 0:25:39
It's really good to see | 0:25:39 | 0:25:40
which of our campus are really going to push themselves | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
and which ones we might need to push to turn around. | 0:25:43 | 0:25:46
SHE PANTS | 0:25:46 | 0:25:49
Amy doesn't seem keen. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:51
I'm walking it, not running it. | 0:25:53 | 0:25:54
It's been raining really badly all day | 0:25:54 | 0:25:56
but it's actually getting better now. | 0:25:56 | 0:25:58
But it's really slippery, so I'm not falling over. | 0:25:58 | 0:26:02
Going to walk it. | 0:26:02 | 0:26:03
Amy's attitude seems to be rubbing off on others. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:12
Her new friend, | 0:26:12 | 0:26:14
14-year-old Rinat from Israel, is also refusing to run. | 0:26:14 | 0:26:18
I hate the two-mile challenge so much. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:21
-I think it's all right, but this weather's just catastrophic. -Yes. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:24
It's really nasty that they're making us walk in this weather. | 0:26:24 | 0:26:28
-Let's go, let's go! Come on, come on! -Leave me. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:30
-"Come on, come on." -Can you leave us be? | 0:26:30 | 0:26:32
While the rest of the campers push on through the rain, | 0:26:34 | 0:26:37
Amy and Rinat have found a short cut. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:40
Bye, guys. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:41
THEY GIGGLE | 0:26:43 | 0:26:46
I can say this is the funnest thing ever. | 0:26:46 | 0:26:49
But their rebellion doesn't last long. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:55
We got disqualified for cheating! | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
Disqualified! | 0:27:02 | 0:27:03
Amy is still a long way from succeeding at camp. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
They have crushed my dreams(!) | 0:27:08 | 0:27:11
SHOUTS OF ENCOURAGEMENT | 0:27:13 | 0:27:16
It's halfway through the course and Amy has been told to pack | 0:27:23 | 0:27:27
an overnight bag for this week's off-site excursion. | 0:27:27 | 0:27:31
Today, everyone's going camping. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:34
I don't think this is worth going camping at all. | 0:27:34 | 0:27:37
I'd rather sleep here. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:41
I think I might start crying in a minute, literally. | 0:27:41 | 0:27:44
It's horrendous. | 0:27:44 | 0:27:47
I'm off, I'm not going. | 0:27:47 | 0:27:49
I'll have to go and tell Lee I'm not going. I'm staying here. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:52
-Excuse me, I'm not going camping. -Why? | 0:27:52 | 0:27:54
-Why? -I'm not going, I'm not going. | 0:27:54 | 0:27:55
The staff wouldn't take no for an answer. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:03
Everyone, including Amy, is on board. | 0:28:03 | 0:28:06
Whilst teaching their physical-activity skills are important, | 0:28:10 | 0:28:13
it's also really important that they're having fun. | 0:28:13 | 0:28:17
If you see them enjoying it, that's maybe making a positive | 0:28:17 | 0:28:20
association with the healthy lifestyle. | 0:28:20 | 0:28:22
Summer holidays are supposed to be like, oh, going on holiday, | 0:28:29 | 0:28:32
sunbathing, having ice cream, | 0:28:32 | 0:28:34
not sleeping in a cold tent with bugs and rain. | 0:28:34 | 0:28:39
How long are we walking for? I swear to God... | 0:28:41 | 0:28:44
We wanted to have a treat and this Wednesday, we went to camp. | 0:28:44 | 0:28:48
I hated it. | 0:28:48 | 0:28:49
As part of the fun, | 0:28:53 | 0:28:54
the camp leaders also want the campers to build their own tents. | 0:28:54 | 0:28:58
Go on, then, guys. What have we got? There we go. | 0:28:58 | 0:29:01
We need a bit of team work. | 0:29:01 | 0:29:03
People putting some more effort in, do you know what I mean? | 0:29:03 | 0:29:07
I'm not very good in woodlands. Too many trees for me. | 0:29:09 | 0:29:14
-Oh, this is disgusting, there is a bird poop. -Urgh! | 0:29:14 | 0:29:17
It's not what 14-year-old Rinat is used to. | 0:29:18 | 0:29:23
I thought it was going to be like really something | 0:29:23 | 0:29:25
that's, like, a vacation from the camp. | 0:29:25 | 0:29:27
This is awful. | 0:29:27 | 0:29:29
It was like a punishment. | 0:29:29 | 0:29:30
At home in Israel, Rinat usually gets her own way. | 0:29:33 | 0:29:37
I'm like, I think, the manager of this house. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:41
I say something, people do it. | 0:29:41 | 0:29:44
She's funny, she's loud, | 0:29:46 | 0:29:49
she is self-minded. | 0:29:49 | 0:29:51
That is Rinat. | 0:29:52 | 0:29:54
Rinat has taken over every available wardrobe in the house. | 0:29:54 | 0:29:59
I'm the only one in my family that have three closets. | 0:29:59 | 0:30:02
I have here a lot of my shoes and my bags. | 0:30:02 | 0:30:06
I have, like, it's opening and I have, | 0:30:06 | 0:30:09
like, some weeks, I'm going, like, every day for shopping | 0:30:09 | 0:30:12
and I buy every day five things, six things. | 0:30:12 | 0:30:14
Rinat's parents employ a full-time housekeeper. | 0:30:14 | 0:30:18
My maid, I ask her something, she will make me. | 0:30:18 | 0:30:22
It's like, I ask her to make me cakes for school, or to make me | 0:30:22 | 0:30:26
anything, she just do it. | 0:30:26 | 0:30:29
She lives with her mum, dad and younger brother. | 0:30:29 | 0:30:33
But when it comes to her weight, she takes after her father. | 0:30:33 | 0:30:37
My mum is skinny and my brother is skinny, like my mum, | 0:30:37 | 0:30:41
and my father is fat and I am like...round! | 0:30:41 | 0:30:46
Despite weighing over 12st, | 0:30:46 | 0:30:49
Rinat just can't motivate herself to lose any weight. | 0:30:49 | 0:30:53
I really hate exercise. It's, like, so hard. | 0:30:53 | 0:30:58
You can't really like it because it's hard. | 0:30:58 | 0:31:00
You must to make your body move | 0:31:00 | 0:31:02
and, like, be tired and working hard. | 0:31:02 | 0:31:04
So, no, it's absolutely disgusting, I think. | 0:31:04 | 0:31:08
So this summer, Rinat was sent to camp by her parents, | 0:31:08 | 0:31:13
who decided not to tell her exactly what she was in for. | 0:31:13 | 0:31:16
I thought this was a sports camp. That's what my dad told me. | 0:31:16 | 0:31:21
Like, I didn't think it was like a... | 0:31:21 | 0:31:23
overweight camp, like fat camp. | 0:31:23 | 0:31:27
Her dad, bless her, | 0:31:27 | 0:31:28
convinced her she was going to an English camp, which she's gone to | 0:31:28 | 0:31:33
before, where they learn English and get to go shopping in Oxford Street. | 0:31:33 | 0:31:37
She rocks up to Bradford with her £10 budget a week. | 0:31:37 | 0:31:41
SHE LAUGHS | 0:31:41 | 0:31:42
No, this is...this is awful! Where I supposed to sleep?! | 0:31:42 | 0:31:47
CHILDREN: Outside! | 0:31:47 | 0:31:49
-Kicking you out! -No! See, look, there is, like, this place, OK? | 0:31:49 | 0:31:53
We noticed in the first few weeks particularly, with Rinat, | 0:31:53 | 0:31:57
that she likes to get her own way. | 0:31:57 | 0:31:58
And when she doesn't get her own way, she will let the staff know about it. | 0:31:58 | 0:32:02
I can't hold it, because then my hands will be dirty. | 0:32:02 | 0:32:05
We come for vacation, we don't come to work. We pay on this place! | 0:32:07 | 0:32:10
No vacation on this camp, my love! No, no, no. | 0:32:10 | 0:32:13
This is a summer vacation and we pay much money. | 0:32:13 | 0:32:16
So, please, tell them to do it. | 0:32:16 | 0:32:18
Does it do it like... Sorry, honey! | 0:32:18 | 0:32:21
Come on! What is wrong with this thing?! | 0:32:21 | 0:32:25
I give up. | 0:32:27 | 0:32:29
Rinat is not the only one dreading a night under canvas. | 0:32:29 | 0:32:32
I'm not interested in building a tent or even being here. | 0:32:33 | 0:32:37
Like, seriously, it's disgusting. | 0:32:37 | 0:32:40
I can't sleep outside. I feel like a homeless person! | 0:32:40 | 0:32:44
It's really bad. I didn't know it would be this bad. | 0:32:44 | 0:32:49
Literally, I'm not liking it. | 0:32:49 | 0:32:52
The floor is rock hard! | 0:32:52 | 0:32:54
-I'd prefer to sleep in a toilet. -LAUGHTER | 0:32:54 | 0:32:57
This is our tent. The floor is so dirty. | 0:32:59 | 0:33:01
Everything is, like, disgusting. | 0:33:01 | 0:33:04
I don't know how we're supposed to sleep here. | 0:33:04 | 0:33:07
Everybody has to sleep with bugs and everything. | 0:33:07 | 0:33:09
This is not possible! | 0:33:09 | 0:33:10
I mean, we're all, like, having a bad time, but I think Rinat, | 0:33:10 | 0:33:14
she was just like, "Oh, no, it's such a punishment. | 0:33:14 | 0:33:16
"I don't want to be here." | 0:33:16 | 0:33:18
-There is no place for us! We have, like... -You'll have to budge up. | 0:33:18 | 0:33:22
-No, but why? Are we sardines? I don't understand! -Yeah! | 0:33:22 | 0:33:25
I look like a sardine? | 0:33:25 | 0:33:26
I'm not feeling like a sardine, so we can't be sardines, OK? | 0:33:26 | 0:33:29
Now we're going to sleep next to all the stinky, like... No way! | 0:33:29 | 0:33:33
OK, how about these guys move a little bit more down? | 0:33:33 | 0:33:37
This is horrible. | 0:33:37 | 0:33:41
Rinat really wasn't impressed by the sleeping arrangements. | 0:33:41 | 0:33:44
She didn't want to stay in a tent. | 0:33:44 | 0:33:46
But I was encouraging her to stay outside, get involved with all the | 0:33:46 | 0:33:50
other girls, because none of them really wanted to stay in the tent. | 0:33:50 | 0:33:53
-Come on, let's find you a room. -Oh, my God, you give me a room?! | 0:33:53 | 0:33:57
-Yes, you have a room, Rinat! Come on! -Yes! -Let's go! | 0:33:57 | 0:34:00
Yes! | 0:34:00 | 0:34:02 | |
-Get in there. -Thank you, Leah, you're the best. | 0:34:02 | 0:34:04
-You're my favourite staff, right? -I know it! | 0:34:04 | 0:34:06
If you want something, do everything you can to get it, | 0:34:06 | 0:34:09
because then you get it and that's all. | 0:34:09 | 0:34:11
You don't need to just say, "Fine, I will sleep in the tent." | 0:34:11 | 0:34:14
No, you need to fight what you want and then you will get it. | 0:34:14 | 0:34:17
Oh, my God, it's going to be, like, the best night. Party! | 0:34:17 | 0:34:20
I was thinking party. | 0:34:20 | 0:34:23
Rinat could definitely have stayed outside, but sometimes... | 0:34:23 | 0:34:27
Yeah, just to keep the peace, it is just easier to let her go inside. | 0:34:27 | 0:34:31
The camp staff have planned an usual evening of entertainment. | 0:34:34 | 0:34:38
Kicking off with a raw onion-eating competition. | 0:34:38 | 0:34:41
KIDS SHOUT ENCOURAGEMENT | 0:34:41 | 0:34:43
Trial Night for me is a bit like our version of I'm A Celebrity. | 0:34:45 | 0:34:49
CHEERING | 0:34:49 | 0:34:50
We know that those things are what draw stronger | 0:34:50 | 0:34:53
relationships between our staff and our children. | 0:34:53 | 0:34:56
I thought that the staff trials were hilarious. | 0:34:58 | 0:35:02
I don't really know why they do staff trials and stuff like that. | 0:35:02 | 0:35:07
SHOUTS OF ENCOURAGEMENT | 0:35:07 | 0:35:09
I just sat, I watched. I didn't get involved. | 0:35:09 | 0:35:11
I didn't want to get involved. | 0:35:11 | 0:35:13
The entertainment culminates | 0:35:13 | 0:35:16
in a challenge to drink four litres of milk. | 0:35:16 | 0:35:19
I can see how people might look at elements of the staff trial night | 0:35:19 | 0:35:23
and say, "That's not appropriate." | 0:35:23 | 0:35:24
But they're not looking at the whole context of camp | 0:35:24 | 0:35:28
and we've been doing this for 20-odd years with very successful results. | 0:35:28 | 0:35:32
KIDS YELL IN DISGUST | 0:35:32 | 0:35:34
Having spent most of the summer together, | 0:35:45 | 0:35:47
the kids are forming strong friendships. | 0:35:47 | 0:35:50
14-year-old Sebastian has always found it hard to make friends | 0:35:53 | 0:35:57
with boys his age. | 0:35:57 | 0:35:59
But here, surrounded by boys who have also struggled with their weight, | 0:35:59 | 0:36:03
he's finding it easier. | 0:36:03 | 0:36:05
-I do miss sweets. It's weird. -What about chocolate? | 0:36:05 | 0:36:09
-What chocolate could you eat right now? -Er...any chocolate. | 0:36:09 | 0:36:14
I can, literally, eat any chocolate. | 0:36:14 | 0:36:17
I've got on, actually, with a lot of boys. More than I expected. | 0:36:17 | 0:36:20
I don't really have anybody who I don't like. | 0:36:20 | 0:36:22
I get along with everybody, so at the moment, everything is good | 0:36:22 | 0:36:25
and I hope it stays like that. | 0:36:25 | 0:36:27
Sebastian has become good friends with 17-year-old Jordan. | 0:36:27 | 0:36:32
Sebastian is really nice. He's, like, from Sweden. Is it... | 0:36:32 | 0:36:37
-Is it Sweden? -WOMAN: -I think he's from Switzerland. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:41
HE LAUGHS | 0:36:41 | 0:36:42
-Oh, my God! OK. -Don't worry, you're not the first... -Switzerland. | 0:36:42 | 0:36:46
-Switzerland, that's it. -Switzerland. | 0:36:46 | 0:36:49
Essex boy Jordan weighs 18st and is the youngest of four brothers. | 0:36:53 | 0:36:59
My mum and dad are quite large, quite stocky, quite big. | 0:36:59 | 0:37:02
And my brothers are quite skinny. All skinny. | 0:37:02 | 0:37:05
All our three brothers are all into football. | 0:37:05 | 0:37:08
So always out on a Sunday, Saturday. Jordan is always at home. | 0:37:08 | 0:37:11
So I think food was his comfort. | 0:37:11 | 0:37:14
Jordan knows he shouldn't weigh so much. | 0:37:14 | 0:37:16
I think people judge me, like, "That fat boy over there," | 0:37:16 | 0:37:19
or something like that. | 0:37:19 | 0:37:22
But he just can't help himself. | 0:37:22 | 0:37:24
Can I get an ice cream, please? | 0:37:24 | 0:37:25
I've tried to encourage him to lose weight. | 0:37:25 | 0:37:28
-That's 1.60, please. -Thank you. -Thank you. Wait for your change. | 0:37:28 | 0:37:32
-MUM: -Every night I come home and cook a nice meal for all the boys. | 0:37:32 | 0:37:36
But when he goes out, | 0:37:36 | 0:37:39
takeaways and spur of the moment takeaways and stuff. | 0:37:39 | 0:37:43
Jordan's weight problems began when he turned 13 | 0:37:43 | 0:37:46
and was able to go out on his own. | 0:37:46 | 0:37:48
I started putting on weight, buying junk food, | 0:37:48 | 0:37:52
like, takeaways from a Chinese shop or Indian shop. | 0:37:52 | 0:37:56
Me telling Jordan to stop eating that | 0:37:56 | 0:37:58
because it's not good for him, it's like he doesn't want to listen. | 0:37:58 | 0:38:01
Jordan knows he needs to learn the self discipline | 0:38:01 | 0:38:05
to help him lose weight. | 0:38:05 | 0:38:06
Today, it's parents day - | 0:38:16 | 0:38:18
the first time that the campers will have seen their mums and dads | 0:38:18 | 0:38:22
since the start of the course. | 0:38:22 | 0:38:24
It's important to talk about what they've learnt, what those | 0:38:26 | 0:38:30
experiences have been, to go away as a family and try | 0:38:30 | 0:38:33
and put some of those things into practice. | 0:38:33 | 0:38:35
And I say try, because it is always work in progress. | 0:38:35 | 0:38:38
Oh, I've missed you! | 0:38:38 | 0:38:41
Jordan's mum and brother have travelled 200 miles from Essex | 0:38:43 | 0:38:46
to surprise him. | 0:38:46 | 0:38:48
-MUM: -I can't wait to see Jordan. | 0:38:48 | 0:38:50
-I'm really excited. Come on, Zak! -Yes! | 0:38:50 | 0:38:54
Yeah. | 0:38:54 | 0:38:56 | |
Yeah. You all right? | 0:39:06 | 0:39:08
LAUGHTER | 0:39:08 | 0:39:09
Hello! | 0:39:11 | 0:39:12
-Are you happy? -I am! | 0:39:14 | 0:39:18
'I felt very emotional when I saw my mum.' | 0:39:19 | 0:39:22
I was, like...very emotional. But I didn't want to show it. | 0:39:22 | 0:39:26
I'm over the moon that they've actually travelled four hours | 0:39:29 | 0:39:32
just to come and see me. | 0:39:32 | 0:39:33
I'm really, like, shocked and I'm just, like, just so happy! | 0:39:33 | 0:39:36
They said you're not coming! | 0:39:36 | 0:39:38
It's not just the chance to see his family. | 0:39:38 | 0:39:40
-Are you taking me out anywhere? -Maybe. -Please take me! Please! | 0:39:40 | 0:39:44
-Just take me out! -LAUGHTER | 0:39:44 | 0:39:46
-I want to get out of here! -Where do you want to go? -Anywhere. | 0:39:46 | 0:39:49
Just anywhere. | 0:39:49 | 0:39:50
-We'll take you for something to eat. -Where are we going? -Dunno. | 0:39:50 | 0:39:53
-Surprise? -Take me now. Take me right now. | 0:39:53 | 0:39:57
And Jordan hasn't forgotten his new mate Sebastian. | 0:39:57 | 0:40:00
I said to my mum that Sebastian's parents ain't going to come, | 0:40:00 | 0:40:03
because they live abroad, and I said to my mum, | 0:40:03 | 0:40:05
"Let's take Sebastian with us to the restaurant." | 0:40:05 | 0:40:07
This is the first meal since the boys arrived at camp | 0:40:07 | 0:40:11
where they can eat what they want. | 0:40:11 | 0:40:13
It's absolutely delicious. | 0:40:13 | 0:40:15
I'm so happy. | 0:40:15 | 0:40:16
I'm happy about eating this food. | 0:40:16 | 0:40:20
It's also a chance to reflect on what they've learnt. | 0:40:20 | 0:40:23
So, the day you leave here, what will you gain, going home? | 0:40:23 | 0:40:27
-What would you take home with you? -Weight. Weight. | 0:40:27 | 0:40:30
No, what, like skills or experience would you take home with you | 0:40:30 | 0:40:33
and tell your family? | 0:40:33 | 0:40:35
I would just know how to, at least, cook healthier things. | 0:40:35 | 0:40:39
-Your diet? -Yeah. -And portion size, as well - portion sizes. | 0:40:39 | 0:40:42
That's the main thing you're coming for, ain't it? You didn't | 0:40:42 | 0:40:45
-just come here just to lose weight, or... -Well, yes, actually. | 0:40:45 | 0:40:48
I have zero confidence. That's the problem. | 0:40:50 | 0:40:52
Like, in school, I can't eat in front of people. | 0:40:52 | 0:40:56
I'm just scared that everyone's looking. | 0:40:56 | 0:40:58
I used to think like that as well. Exactly like that. | 0:40:58 | 0:41:01
And, basically, on school days, like, | 0:41:01 | 0:41:03
I either have to find a place where | 0:41:03 | 0:41:06
nobody's standing or sitting to eat... | 0:41:06 | 0:41:08
-OK. -..or I don't eat anything during the day. | 0:41:08 | 0:41:12
If I feel like someone's looking at me, | 0:41:12 | 0:41:14
I go onto my phone to, kind of, isolate myself. | 0:41:14 | 0:41:17
-Situation sort of thing? -Yeah. | 0:41:17 | 0:41:19
I'm just always scared that they're laughing. | 0:41:19 | 0:41:21
Like, I can't walk through school by myself, | 0:41:21 | 0:41:23
and every morning, I feel so uncomfortable | 0:41:23 | 0:41:26
and so insecure, and... | 0:41:26 | 0:41:28
and until I'm, kind of, | 0:41:28 | 0:41:29
reached the classroom where my friends are sitting. | 0:41:29 | 0:41:31
I just think that it's slowly kicking in that... | 0:41:31 | 0:41:35
that... How insecure I am. | 0:41:35 | 0:41:37
It's three weeks into the course, | 0:41:46 | 0:41:48
but 13-year-old Stephen is still not settled, | 0:41:48 | 0:41:53
and Stephen's dad has been asked to come to the camp. | 0:41:53 | 0:41:57
The reason we've had to put a camper contract together | 0:41:57 | 0:42:00
is because Stephen's been wandering around, | 0:42:00 | 0:42:02
like, out of sessions, quite a bit. | 0:42:02 | 0:42:04
There's been a few, sort of, slightly violent outbursts. | 0:42:04 | 0:42:06
Would you say? That is... And that sort of behaviour is absolutely, | 0:42:06 | 0:42:10
-as you can imagine, unacceptable. -Not tolerated. -Yeah. | 0:42:10 | 0:42:13
It's getting to a stage that, | 0:42:13 | 0:42:14
if he's going to break this contract, | 0:42:14 | 0:42:16
he will lose the privilege of being at this programme. | 0:42:16 | 0:42:18
If you lose this privilege, | 0:42:18 | 0:42:20
you're going to lose a lot more than this, mate, | 0:42:20 | 0:42:22
cos if you can't hack this, you're not going to hack the army, | 0:42:22 | 0:42:24
and soon as you come home, your uniform's gone, | 0:42:24 | 0:42:27
I'll take you straight out of cadets, yeah? | 0:42:27 | 0:42:30
And you will be grounded for the rest of the summer holidays. | 0:42:30 | 0:42:33
It's not going to happen, mate. Don't start getting upset. | 0:42:33 | 0:42:36
When my dad said, he said about getting me to quit cadets, | 0:42:38 | 0:42:42
I was like... I was starting to get upset, | 0:42:42 | 0:42:44
because I really wanted to stay in cadets, to get into the real army. | 0:42:44 | 0:42:50
You will not get away with behaviour like this if you join the army. | 0:42:50 | 0:42:53
You'd be out, mate. | 0:42:53 | 0:42:55
Trust me. I've been there, done that, got the T-shirt. | 0:42:55 | 0:42:57
You need to stop your stupid, childish behaviour, | 0:42:57 | 0:43:01
and it needs to stop now. Yeah? | 0:43:01 | 0:43:05
This opportunity, yeah, is the chance of a lifetime. Don't blow it. | 0:43:05 | 0:43:10
You're going to do this, you're going to complete it | 0:43:10 | 0:43:12
and you're going to come out a changed person. | 0:43:12 | 0:43:14
-All right. -Yeah? So, it stops today, mate. | 0:43:14 | 0:43:17
-Yeah? -Yeah. -Right. | 0:43:17 | 0:43:20
Let's have a look at this, then, yeah? So... | 0:43:20 | 0:43:23
The staff want Stephen to sign a behaviour contract. | 0:43:23 | 0:43:28
If he breaks it, he will be asked to leave. | 0:43:28 | 0:43:31
"Do not attempt to harm any member of staff or other campers. | 0:43:31 | 0:43:34
"Do not swear at any time." | 0:43:34 | 0:43:36
-OK, so do you understand all those? -Yeah. | 0:43:36 | 0:43:39
-Yeah? -yeah. | 0:43:39 | 0:43:40
Right, so if you could put your name there, please? | 0:43:40 | 0:43:45
WOMAN: Thank you very much. | 0:43:45 | 0:43:48
Good lad. | 0:43:48 | 0:43:49
'I think if Stephen improves his behaviour, | 0:43:49 | 0:43:51
'I think he'll be more embraced by the group | 0:43:51 | 0:43:54
'and he'll be more embraced by staff, as well.' | 0:43:54 | 0:43:56
We always try and help him, | 0:43:56 | 0:43:58
but, you know, it is difficult at times. | 0:43:58 | 0:44:01
Erm, but if he was to go with this, | 0:44:01 | 0:44:03
and to improve his behaviour, | 0:44:03 | 0:44:05
he will - he'll reap the benefits of that, | 0:44:05 | 0:44:07
and he'll get the most out of this process, but also, he'll take | 0:44:07 | 0:44:11
the things that he's learnt into his day-to-day life when he goes home. | 0:44:11 | 0:44:14
THEY SHOUT | 0:44:21 | 0:44:23
WHISTLE BLOWS | 0:44:23 | 0:44:27
Young people are supposed to do 60 minutes of exercise every day, | 0:44:27 | 0:44:31
but, nowadays, only a quarter of kids actually manage this. | 0:44:31 | 0:44:36
Our attitude to physical activity, sport or exercise is, | 0:44:36 | 0:44:40
doing something you enjoy, doing it with your friends, | 0:44:40 | 0:44:43
and doing it in a way that makes you happy | 0:44:43 | 0:44:45
and feel confident about yourself. | 0:44:45 | 0:44:46
Right, guys! | 0:44:46 | 0:44:47
In the UK, one in three kids are classified as obese. | 0:44:47 | 0:44:51
At camp, the idea is that being surrounded by others with | 0:44:51 | 0:44:54
similar weight issues means that fear and embarrassment won't stop them | 0:44:54 | 0:44:58
taking part in sport and exercise. | 0:44:58 | 0:45:01
The good thing is, one doesn't feel scared, | 0:45:02 | 0:45:05
because everybody around you came here for the same reason. | 0:45:05 | 0:45:09
It's to change your life and, | 0:45:09 | 0:45:11
if one does not feel nervous that somebody could be making fun of you, | 0:45:11 | 0:45:15
then, it's a pleasant environment to be in. | 0:45:15 | 0:45:18
People here are, like, the same size or a bit bigger. | 0:45:18 | 0:45:21
'They're like... I feel, like, a bit more comfortable with them. | 0:45:21 | 0:45:24
'It's like we're all here for a reason,' | 0:45:24 | 0:45:26
and we just need to, like, get it done. | 0:45:26 | 0:45:28
The boys are taking part in a swimming lesson. | 0:45:30 | 0:45:35
When I go swimming here, I'll be more confident because | 0:45:35 | 0:45:37
other people are, like, the same size as me. | 0:45:37 | 0:45:41
But less than 24 hours after signing his behaviour contract... | 0:45:41 | 0:45:45
WHISTLE BLOWS | 0:45:45 | 0:45:47
..Stephen's back in trouble. | 0:45:47 | 0:45:49
Stephen's had a couple of issues, this morning. In the pool, | 0:45:53 | 0:45:55
he got into a bit of a scuffle with one of the other lads. | 0:45:55 | 0:45:58
I asked him to get out. He then swore at me. | 0:45:58 | 0:46:01
BLEEP! BLEEP! | 0:46:01 | 0:46:03
That's not my decision, whether he will be leaving camp. | 0:46:03 | 0:46:06
I'll speak to management, | 0:46:06 | 0:46:07
but for now, he is on camp and we'll go from there. | 0:46:07 | 0:46:10
Following an emergency staff meeting, | 0:46:10 | 0:46:13
camp leaders Tay and Josh seek out Stephen. | 0:46:13 | 0:46:17
Making a blockade? | 0:46:17 | 0:46:18
-What? Playing a game. -STEPHEN LAUGHS | 0:46:18 | 0:46:21
Stephen, just sit down here, please, mate. | 0:46:23 | 0:46:25
NOKIA RINGTONE PLAYS | 0:46:25 | 0:46:28
All right, so, remember yesterday, | 0:46:28 | 0:46:30
when we filled this out and signed this up? | 0:46:30 | 0:46:32
-Yeah. -Yeah? -Yeah. | 0:46:32 | 0:46:34
We went through it and you signed it, OK? | 0:46:34 | 0:46:38
This morning, at swimming, | 0:46:38 | 0:46:39
you've broke no less than four of the conditions on here. | 0:46:39 | 0:46:43
You have now made a decision to break this contract. | 0:46:43 | 0:46:47
Your dad is going to be coming to pick you up later today. | 0:46:47 | 0:46:51
-Do you understand? -STEPHEN SOBS | 0:46:51 | 0:46:53
Can you just give me one more chance, please? | 0:46:53 | 0:46:56
-And this time I won't mess it up. -HE SNIFFS | 0:46:56 | 0:47:00
I'm sorry, but it's... The decision's been made. | 0:47:00 | 0:47:03
But I want to stay here, though! | 0:47:03 | 0:47:07
Stephen did get really upset and, in my opinion, it was genuine, | 0:47:07 | 0:47:10
but we need all of the kids to get on board with the programme | 0:47:10 | 0:47:15
and our ethos as quickly as possible, | 0:47:15 | 0:47:16
just without having to enforce it on them. | 0:47:16 | 0:47:19
I want to stay at this camp until my days are up. | 0:47:19 | 0:47:22
-HE SOBS -I just want one more chance, please. | 0:47:22 | 0:47:24
You've had your final chance. | 0:47:24 | 0:47:26
You've had numerous chances and we've been explaining to you, | 0:47:26 | 0:47:29
over and over again, how important it is, | 0:47:29 | 0:47:31
and this is, I'm afraid, it's the only way this is going to sink in. | 0:47:31 | 0:47:34
All right? | 0:47:34 | 0:47:36
HE SNIFFS | 0:47:40 | 0:47:42
I didn't think they'd follow through and kick me out, | 0:47:42 | 0:47:44
but obviously they did. | 0:47:44 | 0:47:45
The thing I thought was, "Oh, no, I've messed it up." | 0:47:45 | 0:47:48
Stephen's time at camp is over. | 0:47:51 | 0:47:53
Stephen definitely showed positive signs. | 0:47:58 | 0:48:00
The fact that he wanted to join the army | 0:48:00 | 0:48:02
was a great incentive for him to keep... | 0:48:02 | 0:48:06
keep going with this and we were trying to build on that. | 0:48:06 | 0:48:09
It's just a shame that it was cut so short. | 0:48:09 | 0:48:12
'It's just, this minute, it clicked.' | 0:48:12 | 0:48:15
I do need to learn the lesson | 0:48:15 | 0:48:17
instead of messing around all my life. | 0:48:17 | 0:48:19
'Just behaving, but it's actually too late now.' | 0:48:19 | 0:48:21
HE SOBS | 0:48:26 | 0:48:29
'I was very disappointed in him, | 0:48:31 | 0:48:32
'and he knew I was disappointed in him.' | 0:48:32 | 0:48:34
I would... I would've liked him to complete what he'd set out to do. | 0:48:34 | 0:48:38
'The hardest part is some of the kids | 0:48:41 | 0:48:43
'that we couldn't get through to. | 0:48:43 | 0:48:45
'I always get disappointed with it, but at the same time, | 0:48:45 | 0:48:47
'I always know it's coming. You cannot save all of them.' | 0:48:47 | 0:48:52
You just try your best. That's all you can do. | 0:48:52 | 0:48:54
I'll say this about every child that comes here - | 0:48:58 | 0:49:01
they will benefit, in some way, shape or form. | 0:49:01 | 0:49:05
ENGINE PURRS | 0:49:05 | 0:49:07
Two, one, off you go! | 0:49:15 | 0:49:18
Good. | 0:49:18 | 0:49:19 | |
When she arrived, 14-year-old Rinat hated the camp, | 0:49:24 | 0:49:27
especially all the compulsory exercise, | 0:49:27 | 0:49:31
but as the weeks have passed, she's finally started to engage. | 0:49:31 | 0:49:36
'My attitudes to food has changed,' | 0:49:36 | 0:49:38
and, like, I see that I'm always wanting to go to the gym, | 0:49:38 | 0:49:42
or always asking to go to the gym. | 0:49:42 | 0:49:43
I'm like, "What's wrong with me? Why am I wanting to go to the gym?" | 0:49:43 | 0:49:46
And, it's like, I'm really happy that it's happened, | 0:49:46 | 0:49:49
because, like, it's so good to go the gym, | 0:49:49 | 0:49:51
and it's so good not to think about food like I was thinking about food, | 0:49:51 | 0:49:54
so I'm really happy this change happened. | 0:49:54 | 0:49:58
Go! Off you go! | 0:49:58 | 0:50:00
Today, it's the last two-mile challenge. | 0:50:00 | 0:50:03
Previously, Rinat refused to run the course | 0:50:03 | 0:50:06
and was disqualified for taking a short-cut. | 0:50:06 | 0:50:10
Now she's determined to complete the challenge. | 0:50:10 | 0:50:13
So, I will try. Maybe I'll just walk, but I just want to finish it. | 0:50:13 | 0:50:17
I will try to run, but I will do the best I can. | 0:50:17 | 0:50:20
I really hope I can, because I'm really, really bad at running, | 0:50:20 | 0:50:23
so I will just try to do my best. | 0:50:23 | 0:50:25
But what the two-mile challenge does is, | 0:50:25 | 0:50:27
cos it's up to them to challenge themselves, | 0:50:27 | 0:50:29
they can't win or they can't lose. | 0:50:29 | 0:50:31
All they can do is better their result, | 0:50:31 | 0:50:33
and every week that they see progress, | 0:50:33 | 0:50:36
they then take ownership of that - a challenge, in itself - | 0:50:36 | 0:50:40
and push themselves harder and harder and harder. | 0:50:40 | 0:50:44
That is demonstrating success, not failure. | 0:50:44 | 0:50:47
Can you move your legs a little bit quicker? Like this. | 0:50:47 | 0:50:51
Oh, my God, my legs are burning. | 0:50:51 | 0:50:53
Rinat pushes herself harder than she has ever done before. | 0:50:53 | 0:50:56
You can do it. You can do it. What are we going to do? Yes. | 0:50:56 | 0:51:00
-Come on! -Come on! | 0:51:11 | 0:51:13
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:51:13 | 0:51:16
SHE PANTS | 0:51:23 | 0:51:26
-SHE PANTS -I can't breathe. | 0:51:32 | 0:51:34
Kat, you know how much time I did? | 0:51:34 | 0:51:38
29.47. | 0:51:38 | 0:51:40
-29? I did less than 30. -SHE BREATHES HEAVILY | 0:51:40 | 0:51:44
It's a personal best for Rinat. | 0:51:44 | 0:51:47
I'm happy because I ran. | 0:51:47 | 0:51:49
I don't really care about the time, I'm just happy I ran. | 0:51:49 | 0:51:52
I'm really proud of myself. | 0:51:52 | 0:51:54
The five-week course is coming to an end, | 0:52:00 | 0:52:03
and today it's the final weigh-in. | 0:52:03 | 0:52:05
That's 2.4kg, which is really good. | 0:52:08 | 0:52:11
Well done. | 0:52:11 | 0:52:13
When her twin sister left two weeks into the course, | 0:52:13 | 0:52:16
15-year-old Amy struggled, but stuck with it. | 0:52:16 | 0:52:21
She arrived weighing 16st | 0:52:21 | 0:52:24
and was at serious risk of a heart attack or stroke. | 0:52:24 | 0:52:28
MACHINE BEEPS | 0:52:28 | 0:52:31
-So, you've lost 2.5kg, which is... -Well done. | 0:52:32 | 0:52:36
Amy has lost more weight than any other girl on camp - | 0:52:36 | 0:52:38
over 1st in total. | 0:52:38 | 0:52:41
5.85 lbs. Well done. | 0:52:41 | 0:52:43
-Well done, you. -I wasn't expecting anywhere near that. | 0:52:43 | 0:52:46
I do think my biggest achievement is the weight I've lost, | 0:52:46 | 0:52:49
cos I never thought I could. | 0:52:49 | 0:52:50
Like, I came here expecting to lose about, like, 2kg, | 0:52:50 | 0:52:53
something like that, | 0:52:53 | 0:52:55
so, yeah, I think I've really, like, pushed myself | 0:52:55 | 0:52:57
and done better than I thought I could. | 0:52:57 | 0:53:00
Despite her new-found love of exercise, | 0:53:00 | 0:53:02
for Rinat, her results are surprising. | 0:53:02 | 0:53:05
-You've not put weight on. -Yes, I could. | 0:53:06 | 0:53:09
No, last week, you weighed 70.9 and now it's 70.7. | 0:53:09 | 0:53:13
-It's just... -No? | 0:53:13 | 0:53:15
-Yeah, but it fluctuates every day. -That's normal. | 0:53:15 | 0:53:17
Yeah, like, every day, you weigh a different weight. | 0:53:17 | 0:53:19
What did I lose, 200g? | 0:53:19 | 0:53:21
For Professor Paul Gately, | 0:53:23 | 0:53:25
it's not the amount of weight that's lost, | 0:53:25 | 0:53:27
but the change in the campers' attitude that's most important. | 0:53:27 | 0:53:31
'It's not that they learn how many calories are in an apple,' | 0:53:31 | 0:53:35
'it's actually that they learn' | 0:53:35 | 0:53:36
how to overcome the many barriers and challenges that they face. | 0:53:36 | 0:53:41
This could be the first step towards a healthy future for Rinat. | 0:53:41 | 0:53:46
'I want to lose, like, 20-25kg altogether,' | 0:53:46 | 0:53:50
and I really hope I can do it at home, with the help of everyone, | 0:53:50 | 0:53:54
and I did already, here, a little bit, | 0:53:54 | 0:53:56
but I hope I can continue the change at home, | 0:53:56 | 0:54:00
and I hope I really can do it, because if I can do it, | 0:54:00 | 0:54:03
that will be, like... I will be, like, so happy... | 0:54:03 | 0:54:06
It will be, like, the best thing in my life, I think, | 0:54:06 | 0:54:08
if I really can do it. | 0:54:08 | 0:54:10
It's the last night at camp, and staff have organised | 0:54:15 | 0:54:18
a graduation ceremony to celebrate the campers' achievements. | 0:54:18 | 0:54:22
Welcome, everyone, to graduation! | 0:54:22 | 0:54:25
CHEERING | 0:54:25 | 0:54:28
Most inspirational, without a doubt, | 0:54:28 | 0:54:31
-it's Sebastian. -CHEERING | 0:54:31 | 0:54:33
When I get home, I just need to make sure that no-one pushes me - | 0:54:33 | 0:54:37
that I push myself. | 0:54:37 | 0:54:38
That I'm the person who shows the will to progress, | 0:54:38 | 0:54:42
and to lose weight, to live healthier. | 0:54:42 | 0:54:46
For best singer, | 0:54:46 | 0:54:47
-does anyone know who this is? -CHEERING | 0:54:47 | 0:54:50
Jordan! | 0:54:50 | 0:54:51
Yes, Jordan, up you come, lad. | 0:54:51 | 0:54:53
CHEERING | 0:54:53 | 0:54:55
I've lost over a stone at camp | 0:54:55 | 0:54:56
and I'm very, very happy with myself. | 0:54:56 | 0:54:59
I'm very confident. I feel much better in myself | 0:54:59 | 0:55:02
and I feel like I can achieve much more, like, in the future. | 0:55:02 | 0:55:06
It's been a pleasure watching you grow over the last five weeks - | 0:55:06 | 0:55:10
Little Miss Caring, Amy. | 0:55:10 | 0:55:12
CHEERING | 0:55:12 | 0:55:15
I really don't want to go home. Like, I'm going to miss it so much, | 0:55:15 | 0:55:17
and it's been, like, the biggest, like, | 0:55:17 | 0:55:19
