Across the nation architects are building,

0:00:020:00:03

designing and transforming the homes we live in.

0:00:030:00:06

One day I'm going to live in a house like this

0:00:060:00:08

and not just do it for others.

0:00:080:00:09

We're following some of those leading the way

0:00:090:00:11

in ground-breaking design.

0:00:110:00:13

Their jaw would drop if they saw that.

0:00:130:00:15

I can't believe it.

0:00:150:00:17

We'll be with them every step of the way as they battle with

0:00:180:00:22

builders, blueprints and the clients who hire them.

0:00:220:00:25

You've got a very strange understanding of the word "today."

0:00:250:00:29

Whoa, whoa, whoa!

0:00:290:00:30

That's not good.

0:00:320:00:33

-It's like working with the Chuckle Brothers.

-Ho, ho, ho!

0:00:330:00:35

We're with them as they draw on their seven years of training

0:00:350:00:38

to solve everyday problems.

0:00:380:00:39

Quick word in his ear, make sure there's no more mishaps.

0:00:390:00:42

He's come in on an angle and ripped up the road

0:00:420:00:46

but he's now ripped his exhaust pipe off.

0:00:460:00:48

Oh, man!

0:00:480:00:50

I've said many prayers.

0:00:520:00:54

That's amazing!

0:00:540:00:56

That's a pretty incredible difference, isn't it?

0:00:560:00:58

The fixings alone cost £17,000.

0:00:580:01:01

All in the name of making the properties we dream of a reality.

0:01:040:01:08

Today in the New Forest, architect Wendy tackles a small

0:01:210:01:24

but clever build that needs to be more than just a house

0:01:240:01:27

to its new owner.

0:01:270:01:28

As my health has deteriorated and as things have got more difficult

0:01:280:01:34

with regards to space, imagining this has been

0:01:340:01:37

what has kept us going.

0:01:370:01:39

And in Dorset, architects Paul and Laurence's

0:01:410:01:44

amazing factory-built house is nearly complete,

0:01:440:01:47

but will they get it finished without a hitch?

0:01:470:01:49

It's the sort of project that they're only going to do

0:01:490:01:52

once in their lifetime, and I think Marcus really acknowledges this

0:01:520:01:55

and he wants to get it spot on.

0:01:550:01:56

Nestled in the wilds of the beautiful New Forest National Park,

0:02:020:02:05

husband and wife Cheryl and Ciaran Maher

0:02:050:02:07

have opened their home to bed and breakfast guests.

0:02:070:02:10

So how was the golf yesterday?

0:02:100:02:12

Yeah, not too bad, actually.

0:02:120:02:14

With their two children, Alan and Kelly, both at university,

0:02:140:02:17

it made perfect sense to use their old rooms for paying guests

0:02:170:02:20

and when either of the children came home

0:02:200:02:22

they could stay in this old gardener's cottage behind the house.

0:02:220:02:25

But recently, due to health problems,

0:02:260:02:28

Kelly's had to spend less time on her studies and more time at home

0:02:280:02:32

than she'd like, throwing the family's new life into disarray.

0:02:320:02:35

Kelly has been known to collapse up to 20 times a day.

0:02:360:02:39

Any bit of exercise, extra work to do normal things

0:02:390:02:43

like read a book, like to walk across the room,

0:02:430:02:47

takes a lot more out of her

0:02:470:02:49

and she is an absolute star. She never complains.

0:02:490:02:53

She has always kept fighting to get better. It's beyond...

0:02:530:02:57

I'll get upset.

0:02:590:03:01

Kelly's been diagnosed with Chronic Lyme disease,

0:03:010:03:03

an illness that causes, amongst other things, muscle pain,

0:03:030:03:06

tiredness, and swelling of the joints.

0:03:060:03:09

Last year was my third year.

0:03:090:03:11

Unfortunately, it coincided with a deterioration in my health

0:03:110:03:14

and I made the decision that it was... Now was the best time

0:03:140:03:19

to take the time off to properly focus on getting better.

0:03:190:03:23

The family are hoping that an intense but tough treatment

0:03:230:03:27

in Brussels will help rid Kelly of the disease.

0:03:270:03:29

When she returns, she'll need complete rest,

0:03:290:03:32

so recuperating in a busy B&B is not an option.

0:03:320:03:35

So her parents have decided to demolish the old gardener's cottage

0:03:350:03:38

behind the house, and plan to build an amazing two-bed structure

0:03:380:03:42

in its place - a haven for Kelly to recover in

0:03:420:03:45

and her brother Alan to stay in when he comes home.

0:03:450:03:48

Being involved with something like this has kept my mind off

0:03:480:03:53

all those other things, and it's very exciting to think

0:03:530:03:57

that around the same time as I'll have completed going through

0:03:570:04:01

that tough treatment, this project will hopefully be ready to enjoy.

0:04:010:04:07

They've chosen local, award-winning architect, Wendy Perring,

0:04:070:04:10

to design their new house.

0:04:100:04:12

She's well known for her beautiful and sympathetic designs

0:04:120:04:14

and her ability to make the most of every inch of space in a build.

0:04:140:04:18

And she'll need to use all of her imagination and talent

0:04:180:04:21

to meet the brief for this project.

0:04:210:04:23

The footprint for the new home is only 70m squared,

0:04:230:04:26

but the Mahers want to squeeze in a lot.

0:04:260:04:28

This is going to be a very compact little building

0:04:280:04:31

but it has everything within it that a house would have.

0:04:310:04:35

It's got two bedrooms, it's got a living space,

0:04:350:04:38

it's got its own little garden space, and it's got...

0:04:380:04:42

Each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, but it will also, I think,

0:04:420:04:46

have a degree of unusualness in that it does have a double-height space.

0:04:460:04:51

Wood-burning stove, kitchenette so that they can make breakfast,

0:04:510:04:55

so it's very, very self-contained,

0:04:550:04:57

and I think will be quite an interesting little building.

0:04:570:05:00

The Mahers have a budget of £100,000 to spend

0:05:010:05:04

on their new space-saving house, including architect's fees,

0:05:040:05:08

build costs, and fixtures and fittings.

0:05:080:05:11

Ideally, they'd like it finished before

0:05:110:05:13

their bed and breakfast business reaches its busy period

0:05:130:05:16

in four months' time,

0:05:160:05:17

and for Kelly's return from her treatment in Brussels.

0:05:170:05:19

Overseeing the build is head contractor, Kevin Kilford.

0:05:200:05:24

He's worked with Wendy before and is used to dealing

0:05:240:05:27

with some of her more unusual requests.

0:05:270:05:29

The main structure was the gable outbuilding

0:05:290:05:32

of the gardener's cottage

0:05:320:05:33

which we're trying to preserve the look of that at that moment,

0:05:330:05:37

so that's all quite simple.

0:05:370:05:38

But all the original gardener's cottage is going to be clad

0:05:380:05:42

in corrugated cladding.

0:05:420:05:44

And it's not a product we've worked with extensively before.

0:05:440:05:48

By using materials that mirror the ones from the old gardener's cottage

0:05:480:05:51

and only slightly increasing the footprint

0:05:510:05:53

of the demolished building, Wendy ensures that the design

0:05:530:05:55

gets through planning without a hitch.

0:05:550:05:57

And with the plans approved, Kevin and his team spring into action.

0:05:570:06:01

Their impressive woodworking skills mean that the bespoke wooden frame

0:06:010:06:04

goes up in just five days.

0:06:040:06:06

I'd love to be able to study with a desk area just here,

0:06:070:06:11

and this would be the big window to let in the light in the summer.

0:06:110:06:14

It would be beautiful.

0:06:140:06:15

But it's December.

0:06:170:06:19

Working with new materials and with winter here,

0:06:190:06:22

Kevin's getting anxious about the four-month deadline he's been given.

0:06:220:06:25

This is the corrugated sheeting that we're using

0:06:250:06:28

for the cladding of the roof.

0:06:280:06:30

The lead time I've just discovered is a bit long...

0:06:300:06:33

Six weeks.

0:06:330:06:35

Plus they shut down for Christmas,

0:06:350:06:37

so it's going to be a bit tight for time.

0:06:370:06:39

Kevin's fears are a big concern,

0:06:410:06:43

especially as Cheryl and Kelly are about to depart to Brussels

0:06:430:06:46

for Kelly's treatment and won't be around to supervise.

0:06:460:06:49

Architect Wendy has come to say her goodbyes.

0:06:490:06:52

-Bye-bye.

-Good luck.

0:06:520:06:54

-Thank you. Thanks for everything.

-I'll be thinking of you.

0:06:540:06:57

I know, and help John out, will you?

0:06:570:07:00

Thanks very much. It's exciting now.

0:07:000:07:03

-It is.

-I'm feeling good now.

-Yeah.

0:07:030:07:04

I'm feeling emotional. I know. I'm sorry.

0:07:040:07:08

I'm feeling quite emotional that we've got to this stage.

0:07:080:07:11

Well, there will be something great for you to come back to look at.

0:07:110:07:15

With mother and daughter gone, it's up to Ciaran and Wendy

0:07:160:07:19

to hold the fort and things don't go to plan.

0:07:190:07:21

It's thousands of pounds worth of damage.

0:07:210:07:24

In Dorset, Marcus Grazziano and his family

0:07:290:07:31

have been working on a huge house building project.

0:07:310:07:34

They've demolished their old 1930s bungalow

0:07:340:07:36

and are putting a four bedroom

0:07:360:07:38

contemporary factory-built kit house in its place.

0:07:380:07:41

With a budget of £600,000,

0:07:430:07:46

they hired architects Paul Robinson and Laurence Bowen to design it.

0:07:460:07:49

The foundations have gone in.

0:07:510:07:52

The house was built over 500 miles away in Germany,

0:07:520:07:55

brought to site,

0:07:550:07:58

and put up in just six days.

0:07:580:08:00

The project may be nearing completion,

0:08:030:08:05

but there are still some major finishing touches

0:08:050:08:08

before the Grazziano family can move out of their rented accommodation

0:08:080:08:11

and into their new home.

0:08:110:08:13

After a speedy start,

0:08:130:08:14

client Marcus has seen his schedule slowly slipping.

0:08:140:08:18

Obviously at the beginning of the year

0:08:180:08:20

we got held up with the bad weather,

0:08:200:08:22

and also when we placed our order for the frame

0:08:220:08:24

it was coming closer to Christmas,

0:08:240:08:27

and the glazing factory who supplies all the windows into the frame,

0:08:270:08:31

they went on holiday for three weeks over Christmas.

0:08:310:08:34

And then that's been compounded by the worst weather in 250 years

0:08:340:08:38

or something like that.

0:08:380:08:40

But still, against that, we wanted to do it in six months.

0:08:420:08:46

We'll do it in eight months.

0:08:460:08:48

Today is a big day on site.

0:08:490:08:51

The three massive 360kg bespoke glass doors

0:08:510:08:54

architect Paul imagined and designed on his computer

0:08:540:08:57

all those months ago are about to be installed.

0:08:570:09:01

Big ticket item arriving to site today.

0:09:010:09:04

£20,000 these doors cost, so, yeah, they'd better fit.

0:09:040:09:11

We've only got 2mm tolerance,

0:09:110:09:13

so later on today there could to be some people crying.

0:09:130:09:17

If, for some reason, something is slightly out,

0:09:170:09:19

we've got nothing to play with.

0:09:190:09:22

2mm, that's it.

0:09:220:09:23

Using a hoist,

0:09:300:09:31

the first sheet of glass is very carefully lifted off the lorry.

0:09:310:09:34

With a combined value of £20,000,

0:09:370:09:40

the three panes of glass have to be handled with extreme care.

0:09:400:09:45

You only have to just catch the corner,

0:09:450:09:46

for something that is as strong as that, you know,

0:09:460:09:49

you can hit it with a lump hammer.

0:09:490:09:50

but you only have to catch it wrong and poof, it's gone.

0:09:500:09:52

It'll take two months to replace it.

0:09:520:09:55

This is going to be the interesting bit here.

0:09:580:10:00

They're going to have to put it down on there and then we'll see

0:10:000:10:03

if they're strong enough chaps to move it.

0:10:030:10:05

Getting the door into place cannot be rushed.

0:10:050:10:08

Whoa, whoa!

0:10:080:10:10

He's good, He's good. Pull.

0:10:130:10:15

I probably didn't realise when I drew this

0:10:200:10:22

how much of a challenge it would be.

0:10:220:10:23

It's definitely the biggest doors we've put in on a project.

0:10:230:10:26

It looks like the first one is in.

0:10:320:10:34

It's sliding OK.

0:10:340:10:35

Right on the end. Push it on.

0:10:390:10:42

Worth...worth the hard work.

0:10:420:10:44

Look at that. It's awesome.

0:10:440:10:46

The next pane is given as much care and attention as the first.

0:10:490:10:53

For Paul and Barry, it's a chance to see first-hand

0:10:530:10:55

the results of months of hard work.

0:10:550:10:57

Imagine the weight. You've got how many people lifting it?

0:10:570:11:00

To think I can move it with just one arm...

0:11:000:11:04

is pretty impressive.

0:11:040:11:05

I'm more than happy.

0:11:060:11:07

Award winning architect, Wendy Perring,

0:11:160:11:18

has worked in the New Forest for the past eight years

0:11:180:11:20

designing both unique and sustainable buildings

0:11:200:11:23

as well as restoring and renovating the more traditional.

0:11:230:11:26

Today, she's off to see a new project - an old water tower.

0:11:270:11:31

This project has really grabbed me

0:11:310:11:33

because it is something... The building is very quirky.

0:11:330:11:36

I love dealing with extremely unusual and challenging situations.

0:11:360:11:41

Built in the 1930s,

0:11:480:11:49

the water tower would have been used to house the water tank

0:11:490:11:52

and supply the pressure needed to get water to the main house.

0:11:520:11:55

It was converted by its previous owners.

0:11:550:11:57

It's just beautiful.

0:11:590:12:01

It's very imposing

0:12:010:12:03

but it's...the most lovely thing is its courtyard setting.

0:12:030:12:06

It's incredibly romantic as a building and just very detailed.

0:12:070:12:13

Very exciting, indeed. I can't wait to get my hands on it.

0:12:130:12:15

Sheryl bought the cottage and adjoining water tower

0:12:170:12:20

five years ago.

0:12:200:12:21

The family have stamped their mark on the main house and garden,

0:12:210:12:24

but up until now the water tower has remained untouched.

0:12:240:12:27

Oh, just beautiful.

0:12:310:12:34

It currently has a bedroom on the first floor,

0:12:360:12:38

a living room on the second, and a bathroom at the top.

0:12:380:12:41

But it'll need a lot of work to bring it up to the standard

0:12:410:12:43

of the rest of the house.

0:12:430:12:45

It's incredibly cold.

0:12:450:12:47

It's cold.

0:12:480:12:49

As you can see it gets a little bit damp.

0:12:490:12:51

There's even mushrooms growing on some of the window sills

0:12:510:12:54

where there's a little bit of leakage.

0:12:540:12:56

Right. When do you use this?

0:12:560:12:58

Occasionally in the summer but really hardly at all.

0:12:580:13:02

-What a shame.

-I know.

0:13:020:13:03

I'd love to be able to have people to stay and say,

0:13:030:13:06

"Oh, you're staying in the tower?" Cos people find that novel.

0:13:060:13:09

It's kind of got a bit of a novelty factor to it

0:13:090:13:13

and I'd like to be able to sit up there and have some peaceful time.

0:13:130:13:17

But Wendy can already see the potential.

0:13:170:13:20

I think the lighting is having a really big effect,

0:13:200:13:23

actually, in this staircase.

0:13:230:13:24

Yeah. I mean when you rub that...

0:13:240:13:26

The shape of this is beautiful.

0:13:260:13:27

Even just handling, you know, that's lovely.

0:13:270:13:30

It is.

0:13:300:13:31

You know, I love that and you've got cracks and things in it,

0:13:310:13:34

so that type of thing is great.

0:13:340:13:36

Fabulous. Look at that.

0:13:380:13:40

That is amazing.

0:13:400:13:42

The tree...

0:13:420:13:44

just beautiful, isn't it?

0:13:440:13:47

It's just fantastic.

0:13:470:13:48

Sheryl hopes to spend no more than £40,000 transforming

0:13:480:13:52

the water tower into a unique addition to her home.

0:13:520:13:55

Oh, I love it.

0:13:550:13:56

It's absolutely fantastic.

0:13:560:13:58

It's just... It's one of those projects that you, as an architect...

0:13:580:14:03

I think you dream of and you're absolutely dying

0:14:030:14:06

to get your hands on. So I think we'll have lots of fun here.

0:14:060:14:10

I'm really excited about it.

0:14:100:14:12

At Wendy's current project in the New Forest,

0:14:210:14:23

the build of Cheryl and Ciaran's new house has been moving on apace.

0:14:230:14:27

The plan is to create a small haven for their two grown-up children,

0:14:270:14:31

Kelly and Alan, to stay in, and a place for Kelly to recover

0:14:310:14:34

from her intense course of treatment.

0:14:340:14:37

Architect Wendy's drawn inspiration from the original iron roof,

0:14:370:14:41

making the bold decision to clad part of the house

0:14:410:14:43

in a material more commonly seen on agricultural buildings.

0:14:430:14:46

What we have is a modern day equivalent of the corrugated tin.

0:14:480:14:51

It's not built of tin.

0:14:510:14:53

It's built of a fibrous cement board,

0:14:530:14:57

so it's a good material to use

0:14:570:14:58

but not normally used in a domestic setting.

0:14:580:15:01

Builder Kevin's not so sure...

0:15:010:15:04

This is designed for agricultural buildings at the end of the day.

0:15:040:15:07

And any pitch, it's usually used for massive, massive, massive barns...

0:15:070:15:11

Hay barns, or machinery barns and stuff, so it's a bit utilitarian,

0:15:110:15:15

really, but it's the look that, you know, Wendy is trying to get.

0:15:150:15:19

The cladding will be topped by a matching ridge.

0:15:190:15:21

The sections have just arrived on site and Kevin's having doubts.

0:15:210:15:25

These ridges are preformed and they suit any angle on the ridge,

0:15:250:15:30

but they just look quite bulky, and I just wanted to get Wendy

0:15:300:15:34

to sort of say they're OK, really.

0:15:340:15:37

Cos when they're actually held up on them

0:15:370:15:39

they do kick up quite a bit higher.

0:15:390:15:41

-Hey, Wendy, how you doing?

-Good, you?

0:15:410:15:43

The ridges are a key part of the look of the exterior.

0:15:430:15:46

The ridges are being held for your viewing pleasure.

0:15:460:15:49

And if they don't meet Wendy's vision,

0:15:490:15:51

then she might have to rethink her use of this unorthodox material.

0:15:510:15:55

And what's the return policy on it?

0:15:550:15:57

I'm not saying no, I'm just bringing it up for discussion.

0:15:580:16:00

-No, because it's a special order painted...

-Yeah.

0:16:000:16:03

Actually, when you stand back and look at it and you see the...

0:16:030:16:06

I think this helps, doesn't it?

0:16:060:16:07

-If it was just that section which is just a short section.

-Yeah.

0:16:070:16:10

I think once it's all clad and you see it as a complete entity,

0:16:100:16:13

I think it will be fine.

0:16:130:16:15

Yeah, thanks, guys.

0:16:150:16:16

With the build nearing completion, it's reached a critical stage.

0:16:160:16:21

To bring as much light into the house as possible,

0:16:210:16:23

Wendy's ordered large and expensive bespoke glass doors and windows.

0:16:230:16:28

It's taken nine weeks for them to be built

0:16:280:16:31

and today they're finally being delivered.

0:16:310:16:34

All the builders have to do is make sure

0:16:340:16:36

they get from the bottom of the garden to site.

0:16:360:16:39

Each door costs £6,000 and is over 7ft tall,

0:16:390:16:43

and so needs to be handled with care.

0:16:430:16:45

Client Ciaran has just been given some devastating news.

0:16:500:16:54

There's some damage to the doors.

0:16:540:16:55

The way the actual pallet was stacked was the four doors

0:16:550:16:58

were sitting on top of each other and as one came off

0:16:580:17:02

it just cascaded down, hit the ground,

0:17:020:17:04

and two of the four have been damaged.

0:17:040:17:06

The damage is potentially disastrous.

0:17:060:17:09

Just what you needed at the moment(!)

0:17:090:17:11

Architect Wendy is equally distraught.

0:17:110:17:14

I think it's a case of having to get them re-made

0:17:140:17:18

and waiting another ten weeks for them to arrive.

0:17:180:17:23

Without the windows, the building can't be made watertight,

0:17:230:17:26

putting a halt to progress.

0:17:260:17:28

The B&B is starting to get busy, and daughter Kelly

0:17:280:17:31

will soon be back from Brussels and needs the house to be ready.

0:17:310:17:35

Under pressure, Kevin comes up with a stop gap solution.

0:17:350:17:39

The external leaf is all fine, seals are fine, glass is fine,

0:17:390:17:43

everything else is fine.

0:17:430:17:44

It's just this timber split here so we're going to look at doing

0:17:440:17:47

a minor repair for now.

0:17:470:17:50

Fix the frame in for security

0:17:500:17:52

because whatever we do isn't going to happen overnight,

0:17:520:17:55

so we need to press on.

0:17:550:17:56

It's the only bit that will be left but at least it's secure and dry

0:17:560:17:59

so we can carry on with the second fix, and finishing off

0:17:590:18:02

and fitting out the bathrooms, and all the expensive items can come in.

0:18:020:18:05

Wendy has come to site to meet Cheryl...

0:18:090:18:12

Hello.

0:18:120:18:13

..who's on a rare visit home from Belgium

0:18:130:18:15

where Kelly is receiving her specialist treatment.

0:18:150:18:17

-How are you keeping?

-I'm fine. How are you?

0:18:170:18:20

Great, yeah. Good. Coffee?

0:18:200:18:22

It's a chance for Wendy to catch up with her client

0:18:220:18:24

about how things are going.

0:18:240:18:25

Is your head so much in Kelly's treatment or do you feel

0:18:250:18:28

you have enough head space to be able to make decisions

0:18:280:18:31

about what's going on?

0:18:310:18:33

Well, it's a mix of the medical treatment on one hand,

0:18:330:18:35

but keeping life a little bit sane on the other side

0:18:350:18:38

because this is the future.

0:18:380:18:39

The future is Kelly being better.

0:18:390:18:42

The future is this building and moving forward.

0:18:420:18:45

That's actually quite nice, isn't it?

0:18:450:18:47

To have a focus on something that's other than on Kelly's treatment.

0:18:470:18:51

-It's keeping us all sane. It's keeping us all going.

-Yeah.

0:18:510:18:55

Whilst Wendy is here, she's keen to check on progress.

0:18:570:19:00

Oh, look at this.

0:19:000:19:01

Yes. Do you like the floor?

0:19:030:19:04

I do. Yeah, I do.

0:19:040:19:07

-Oh, wow!

-Good?

0:19:070:19:08

Wow. It's a little man cave.

0:19:080:19:11

You've got a transition zone here.

0:19:110:19:13

Sorry, excuse me.

0:19:130:19:16

That's wonderful!

0:19:160:19:18

Mother and daughter are heading back to Belgium in a couple of days

0:19:180:19:21

to complete Kelly's treatment.

0:19:210:19:23

Knowing the house will be waiting for them on their return

0:19:230:19:25

has always been a real motivator for Kelly.

0:19:250:19:28

It's very exciting to think that they're both on the same time frame,

0:19:280:19:33

and it has definitely been something to keep me positive.

0:19:330:19:37

Two months later, the damaged doors are still not replaced

0:19:410:19:44

but the rest of the work is finally complete.

0:19:440:19:47

The old building was a draughty shed with little use or function.

0:19:470:19:52

It's now a cool, contemporary building.

0:19:520:19:54

Wendy has come round to see the finished cottage

0:19:540:19:57

she designed for brother and sister Kelly and Alan.

0:19:570:20:00

Thank you very much. Oh, look at these coat hooks.

0:20:000:20:03

Wow. It looks fabulous.

0:20:050:20:08

Oh, my goodness!

0:20:080:20:10

Wendy's challenge was always to make the most

0:20:120:20:15

of the tiny 70m squared space she had available,

0:20:150:20:18

and by using clever features like sliding doors,

0:20:180:20:20

stunning mezzanine sleeping areas with access out onto the roof

0:20:200:20:24

and Kelly's bold colours,

0:20:240:20:25

the new building feels spacious enough to be a proper home.

0:20:250:20:29

Oh, it's fabulous. Gosh, Kelly must be delighted.

0:20:290:20:32

It's absolutely... It's perfect.

0:20:320:20:34

It feels really big.

0:20:340:20:36

That's what I can't believe with all the rooms.

0:20:360:20:39

All along we've known it's a small building,

0:20:390:20:41

but when you come in, it's just...

0:20:410:20:43

It doesn't feel small at all.

0:20:430:20:45

There's a bed, a wardrobe...

0:20:450:20:49

there's a desk, and there's still room, you know, one day for her

0:20:490:20:53

to spread out her yoga mat.

0:20:530:20:55

Well, that's... Cos she loves yoga.

0:20:550:20:56

The room is a triumph and exactly as Kelly imagined it would be.

0:20:560:21:00

I'd love to be able to study with a desk area just here

0:21:010:21:06

and this would be the big window to let in the light

0:21:060:21:09

so in the summer it would be beautiful.

0:21:090:21:10

-Here the beauty of this is that she can look out over the garden.

-Yeah.

0:21:130:21:16

-Well, I hope you like it.

-I do.

0:21:180:21:20

Cos I love it.

0:21:200:21:22

It's just great. Yeah, everything I'd hoped for.

0:21:220:21:26

More than what I'd hoped for. Thank you very, very much.

0:21:260:21:29

-Really, thank you.

-You're welcome.

0:21:290:21:30

What we've managed to achieve in a very small space is fantastic.

0:21:320:21:36

It feels really...it feels like a much larger building

0:21:360:21:39

than it looks like on the outside.

0:21:390:21:40

It feels quite quirky and therefore it suits them as a family.

0:21:400:21:45

It suits their characters, so...

0:21:450:21:47

And I think most importantly they seem to be happy.

0:21:470:21:50

Kelly is back from treatment.

0:21:500:21:52

She's not yet able to move in but has had a lot of input

0:21:520:21:55

into how her new room looks.

0:21:550:21:57

As mum Cheryl knows, having the cottage to look forward to

0:21:570:22:00

has been, and will continue to be, an important part of Kelly's recovery.

0:22:000:22:04

That room is totally and utterly vital.

0:22:040:22:06

Her sanctuary... it's where she's going to start

0:22:060:22:09

to bring her life back again.

0:22:090:22:10

And hopefully, as she starts getting well enough

0:22:100:22:13

to read a bit more again,

0:22:130:22:14

life will start taking off and she will start seeing light

0:22:140:22:17

-at the end of the tunnel, won't she?

-Yeah.

0:22:170:22:20

In Dorset, Marcus Grazziano and his family

0:22:270:22:29

are into the final stage of building

0:22:290:22:31

before they can move into their incredible factory built,

0:22:310:22:34

two-storey, £600,000 house.

0:22:340:22:37

Over its six month schedule,

0:22:370:22:39

the project has delivered drama after drama

0:22:390:22:41

for architects Paul and Laurence and head contractor Barry Bacon.

0:22:410:22:44

From extreme weather jeopardising the work...

0:22:460:22:50

We're going to call the pour off now.

0:22:500:22:52

It's causing too much damage.

0:22:520:22:54

A visit to the factory in Germany that went with a bang...

0:22:550:22:59

That's not good.

0:22:590:23:00

..to the impressive spectacle of an entire house

0:23:000:23:03

being erected in a blistering six days.

0:23:030:23:05

The schedule for the build is running nearly two months behind,

0:23:060:23:10

but it's very nearly finished.

0:23:100:23:11

Paul and Laurence are back to meet contractor Barry and owner Marcus.

0:23:110:23:15

-It's looking good.

-Yeah. That's changed loads since we last saw it.

0:23:150:23:18

Yeah. I'm quite amazed, actually, how far they've come.

0:23:180:23:21

Eight months ago, a dilapidated 1930s bungalow stood in this spot.

0:23:220:23:26

Now, it's a stunning contemporary piece of architecture.

0:23:260:23:30

The treated Siberian larch cladding

0:23:300:23:32

and local Purbeck stone beneath soften this super modern exterior

0:23:320:23:36

and help to tie it back into the surrounding countryside.

0:23:360:23:40

The huge £20,000 glass doors at the front

0:23:400:23:42

make the most of the spectacular views.

0:23:420:23:45

-How are you doing?

-Good to see you.

0:23:450:23:48

-How are you doing, mate?

-How are you doing?

0:23:480:23:50

-Are you all right?

-Yeah.

-Looking good, eh?

0:23:500:23:52

It looks fantastic.

0:23:520:23:54

Work to the exterior dry stone walls

0:23:540:23:56

is still a few weeks away from completion.

0:23:560:23:58

I hadn't really taken on board the fact

0:23:580:24:00

that they have to dress every stone.

0:24:000:24:02

You kind of assume that you could pick some stone up

0:24:020:24:04

and be able to use it but they are going to the last person on site.

0:24:040:24:08

I think that's nice that the contrast of the build to go from, you know,

0:24:080:24:11

a kind of hi tech factory in Germany,

0:24:110:24:13

in terms of the basic system that's been put up,

0:24:130:24:15

and then you've just got this real kind of craftsmanship

0:24:150:24:18

with the finishes.

0:24:180:24:19

It's been quite a journey for Marcus.

0:24:190:24:21

Just the reality of standing here now is, um...

0:24:210:24:24

It kind of leaves you a little bit numb.

0:24:240:24:26

Is that just because of how much it's cost?!

0:24:280:24:30

But there are some people who know exactly how they feel about it.

0:24:320:24:35

I think it looks cool because it's got stairs

0:24:360:24:40

and it's got a laundry chute.

0:24:400:24:42

Inside, the house is starting to take shape.

0:24:420:24:46

The four bedrooms are split across the two floors

0:24:460:24:48

with the whole house designed to make the most of the natural light

0:24:480:24:52

and views from the moment you walk in.

0:24:520:24:54

There's a massive impact when you come in

0:24:540:24:56

because you see through there,

0:24:560:24:57

you've got this big opening,

0:24:570:24:59

you can see the kind of voided area going up

0:24:590:25:00

but you've got a big fenced off height up there.

0:25:000:25:03

-Yeah, it's a nice volume of space.

-Yeah.

0:25:030:25:04

What's nice is when you approach the house from the front...

0:25:040:25:07

-You can't see it.

-You can't see that, yeah.

0:25:070:25:09

Yeah, I think that's what...

0:25:090:25:11

So you do get this kind of...

0:25:110:25:13

This kind of awe that the massing of the building in front of you,

0:25:130:25:16

you can't see what's behind it.

0:25:160:25:18

It's like the private view when you get this bang,

0:25:180:25:21

it's a big kind of vista.

0:25:210:25:22

It's one of the old kind of cliches,

0:25:220:25:24

but everyone says you want to bring the outside in,

0:25:240:25:26

but it does, actually.

0:25:260:25:27

When you stand here now and you look out, it does do that.

0:25:270:25:30

Just as Paul imagined in his original computer-generated plans,

0:25:320:25:36

there'll be a lounge on the first floor

0:25:360:25:38

to make the most of the fantastic vistas

0:25:380:25:41

and a large kitchen/dining room below.

0:25:410:25:43

Amazed... When I first walked in and saw this,

0:25:440:25:47

I was like, "Oh, my God."

0:25:470:25:49

You know, you kind of just stand and stare.

0:25:490:25:51

The lounge above gives the family another area to relax.

0:25:550:25:59

This is the view, isn't it?

0:25:590:26:00

They're both awesome.

0:26:000:26:03

The view from downstairs and from up here.

0:26:030:26:05

It just seems nice that you've got the options

0:26:050:26:07

of different types of spaces

0:26:070:26:09

depending on what you guys are doing as a family, I think.

0:26:090:26:14

This house was fabricated on a factory line in Germany,

0:26:140:26:17

and yet it has delivered everything Paul and Laurence imagined

0:26:170:26:20

when they first designed it.

0:26:200:26:22

I think the other thing that's nice which is, you know,

0:26:220:26:25

we're starting to do now,

0:26:250:26:26

is that there's this sort of misconception that timber frame,

0:26:260:26:30

you know, people think that it's a kit system.

0:26:300:26:33

So it's kit parts and you can only get a certain house.

0:26:330:26:36

-You either get style A, B, or C.

-Yeah.

0:26:360:26:39

But you can still use it as a process to create a piece of architecture

0:26:390:26:43

which is bespoke to what you guys wanted.

0:26:430:26:46

The building has been a battle

0:26:500:26:52

against planners, time, and the elements,

0:26:520:26:54

but for Laurence, it's a worthy addition to the Dorset countryside.

0:26:540:26:58

Seeing it today, I think one of the big successes is that

0:27:000:27:04

it's a contemporary piece of architecture within a rural setting.

0:27:040:27:09

I think it's nice to kind of demonstrate that you can do something

0:27:090:27:14

that is progressive and doesn't have to hark back

0:27:140:27:19

to the kind of twee cottage, if you like,

0:27:190:27:22

or the kind of traditional barn.

0:27:220:27:25

And I think, you know, seeing it within its setting today,

0:27:250:27:28

I think that's really worked.

0:27:280:27:30

And for Marcus, it's finally given him the family home

0:27:300:27:34

he's been dreaming of.

0:27:340:27:35

It's exceeded what I thought it was going to be.

0:27:350:27:37

I couldn't actually see... I could see this bit.

0:27:370:27:39

I didn't know what was going to go on outside

0:27:390:27:41

and therefore how that was going to look.

0:27:410:27:44

But seeing it now, it's by far exceeded my expectations.

0:27:440:27:47

It's brilliant. I'm really pleased.

Next time...

0:27:530:27:54

In Scotland, architect Bobby battles to build

0:27:540:27:57

not one, but ten houses.

0:27:570:27:59

They have to move in. Failure is no option.

0:28:000:28:03

But a visit from the building inspector threatens to derail

0:28:030:28:06

his efforts at the last hurdle.

0:28:060:28:08

If I can't get it done tomorrow,

0:28:080:28:09

the house won't get a completion certificate.

0:28:090:28:12

We can't issue the completion certificate until that is done.

0:28:120:28:15

And in Wales, architect Dan is designing a £1,000,000 family home.

0:28:150:28:19

If I look at this house and I'm looking at the quality of the finish,

0:28:190:28:24

I'm always going to demand perfection.

0:28:240:28:26

But he and his client don't see eye to eye.

0:28:260:28:29

Dan has his view and I have mine and they don't meet.
