Episode 2 Exodus: Our Journey

Since 2015,

over 1.5 million refugees and migrants have come to Europe.

But the Europe they dreamed of has changed.

Borders have closed.

And public opinion seems to be turning against them.

Filmed over the last three years, and across 31 countries,

this news series sees Europe through the eyes of those who thought

they'd made it to safety.

And it tells the stories of those who are still prepared to risk

everything for a new life in Europe.

-This steel fence which runs for 110 miles is now a reality

separating Hungary from Serbia.

More barbed wire, more police patrols...

..and comes equipped with alarms and thermal imaging cameras...

Only a few refugees dare to come close.

They're all very aware that they're not welcome in Hungary.

The climate has become hostile towards migrants...

When caught, they've been stripped of clothing and beaten.

The new law allows the government to lock up refugees

and asylum seekers indefinitely.

It's a prison!

They are treating us like animals!

-This month, the Prime Minister, Victor Orban,

took charge of a new group of so-called "border hunters."

A new law now gives the government even more power

to round up migrants.

and it's calling for what it calls "the line of defence"

to be pushed all the way to Libya.

Unrest in Northern Africa has swelled the numbers of people

trying to reach the EU.

Thousands of migrants have drowned or died from starvation

or dehydration.

The migrants themselves come mostly from Sub-Saharan Africa,

they're fleeing poverty and repression.

Most are not refugees but economic migrants,

young men looking for a better life.

-You've got the Spanish enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta,

which have barriers that separate them from the rest of Morocco,

built to stop immigration and smuggling.

70 Sub-Saharan African migrants were injured

when they tried to get through the razor-wire-topped fence.

This is the moment where their struggle to enter Europe will start.

-More than 1,000 people surprised the Moroccan border patrol

and ran for the fence.

Hundreds of migrants entered Spanish territory in North Africa on Friday.

Upon arrival, they shouted, "Freedom."

This was one of several demonstrations that took place

across Europe today.

Political momentum is with those opposed to asylum seekers.

The far-right has gained votes by promising a crackdown.

An annual rally of the Golden Dawn party in Athens.

Around 800 Greek nationalists gather to denounce

the European Union and migrants.

"Merkel must go," they chant.

This is the backlash against Germany's generous refugee policy.

These are the dissenters and their numbers are swelling.

The right-wing has been making spectacular gains here in Germany

in the last couple of years.

The AfD, or Alternative for Germany,

has only existed for three years and, in that time,

it has attracted a lot of support for its anti-migrant views.
