One of the things I love about us Brits is our spirit of generosity.

0:00:030:00:07

If I can give back to somebody who had a similar struggle to my own,

0:00:070:00:10

then that's what I'd like to do.

0:00:100:00:12

Last year, nearly three quarters of us gave to charity.

0:00:120:00:16

But, what if you had the chance to

0:00:160:00:18

go back and relive moments from your past?

0:00:180:00:21

I wish I was 18 again.

0:00:210:00:22

THEY LAUGH

0:00:220:00:24

I'm expecting mum and dad to walk out now and say, "Hello".

0:00:240:00:26

-You know?

-Yeah.

0:00:260:00:28

Moments which would inspire you to want to help someone today.

0:00:280:00:31

I want to give back to those people that are going through that,

0:00:310:00:34

that I went through at the beginning.

0:00:340:00:36

If I can give something to somebody else that would change their lives,

0:00:360:00:38

-I'd really love to.

-Fantastic.

0:00:380:00:40

Someone who had no idea this life-changing windfall was coming.

0:00:400:00:44

I have got potentially her dream...

0:00:440:00:47

in my hand.

0:00:470:00:49

-How are you feeling?

-Nervous.

0:00:490:00:52

'There'll be surprises.'

0:00:520:00:53

-How are you?

-How good.

0:00:530:00:55

Thank you so much!

0:00:560:00:58

Thank you!

0:00:580:01:00

'With acts of generosity that will change people's lives...'

0:01:000:01:03

-Aww.

-I'm really excited.

-We are all crying.

0:01:030:01:07

-Do you need a hug, as well?

-Yeah, thanks.

0:01:070:01:09

THEY LAUGH

0:01:090:01:10

'..forever.'

0:01:100:01:11

-Wahay!

-That's brilliant.

0:01:110:01:12

Somebody that just does that for people, it's just amazing.

0:01:120:01:15

It really is.

0:01:150:01:16

This is Going Back Giving Back.

0:01:160:01:18

Today we're going back to Buckinghamshire to hear the story

0:01:290:01:31

of a born survivor, a man who beat the odds and now dedicates his life

0:01:310:01:35

to helping others.

0:01:350:01:37

How did this man find the strength to carry on

0:01:380:01:41

after his life changed forever?

0:01:410:01:43

I'm still very, very lucky to still be here as well,

0:01:430:01:46

so every day's a blessing for me,

0:01:460:01:48

every day is a miracle I'm still here.

0:01:480:01:50

What's inspiring him to want to give something back to someone today?

0:01:500:01:55

This is where my new life started.

0:01:550:01:57

And it's saved my life as well.

0:01:570:01:59

Can he help a young boy achieve his dream?

0:01:590:02:02

How does it make you feel when you actually hold that sword and you

0:02:020:02:06

-start fencing?

-Happy.

0:02:060:02:08

'And there's an air of anticipation

0:02:080:02:10

'as we prepare for the big surprise...'

0:02:100:02:12

-You nervous?

-No, not at all,

0:02:120:02:15

I'm more excited, if I'm really honest with you.

0:02:150:02:16

I'm excited too.

0:02:160:02:19

'..with the ultimate gift.' THEY CHEER

0:02:190:02:21

-That's amazing!

-Thank you.

0:02:210:02:23

You're welcome, give me a high five.

0:02:230:02:25

Eight years ago, the man I'm about to meet was given just days to live,

0:02:370:02:41

but fate was on his side.

0:02:410:02:42

He defied the doctors, checked out of hospital and discovered

0:02:420:02:45

a new passion and love for life.

0:02:450:02:47

I'm looking forward to meeting him.

0:02:470:02:50

42-year-old Adrian is a retired wheelchair fencing champion,

0:02:500:02:54

who has represented his country.

0:02:540:02:56

Today he uses his life experiences to tour the world as a

0:02:560:02:59

motivational speaker, and he's

0:02:590:03:01

an ambassador to various charities.

0:03:010:03:03

-Adrian, how are you?

-Aled, how are you, sir?

0:03:040:03:07

Yeah, good. Not bad at all, how about you?

0:03:070:03:08

-Fantastic, what a beautiful day.

-Yeah.

0:03:080:03:10

'He lives in Warrington in Cheshire,

0:03:100:03:12

'but I'm meeting him in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire.'

0:03:120:03:15

So, go on, what's motivating you to give something back today?

0:03:150:03:18

Eight years ago I went to bed perfectly fit and healthy,

0:03:180:03:21

no symptoms.

0:03:210:03:23

I think that's the worrying part about it,

0:03:230:03:24

there was nothing wrong with me whatsoever.

0:03:240:03:26

And I woke up in Warrington hospital three days later,

0:03:260:03:31

and I'd been in a coma and I woke up.

0:03:310:03:35

Doctors were surrounding me and I was so confused and dazed.

0:03:350:03:38

I just didn't know what the heck was going on.

0:03:380:03:40

Adrian had suffered a massive brain haemorrhage.

0:03:420:03:45

But doctors believed this was a symptom of something else.

0:03:450:03:49

They gave Adrian four brain scans,

0:03:490:03:51

then they delivered the worst possible news.

0:03:510:03:55

So they said, "Yeah, we've found a tumour.

0:03:550:03:57

"Unfortunately for you the tumour is four inches long,

0:03:570:04:00

"an inch wide and six inches deep into the brain."

0:04:000:04:03

Oh, my God.

0:04:030:04:04

And, em,... "We'll give you five days to live."

0:04:040:04:07

So, just like that,

0:04:070:04:09

my life had changed forever.

0:04:090:04:11

However, Adrian defied the odds and after five months,

0:04:110:04:14

doctors sent him home.

0:04:140:04:16

But his life had changed overnight.

0:04:160:04:18

He had been a seemingly healthy,

0:04:180:04:20

tower of a man at six foot four,

0:04:200:04:22

with his own business, and father to two young girls.

0:04:220:04:26

When you were told you had five days to live, how did you feel?

0:04:260:04:30

It started to slowly hit me and I just,

0:04:300:04:33

obviously was in just disbelief.

0:04:330:04:36

And just angry as well.

0:04:360:04:38

-"Why me?" kind of thing?

-Of course, especially, as you say, cos you were fit and well.

0:04:380:04:42

-Fit and healthy, no symptoms.

-You're still here.

0:04:420:04:44

I'm still here, but even though it's been eight years,

0:04:440:04:47

I can still go to bed and never wake up. So...

0:04:470:04:50

it's always there and there's not a reprieve, unfortunately.

0:04:500:04:53

But that must get you down all the time, mustn't it?

0:04:530:04:56

Sometimes, but I think also as well I'm still

0:04:560:04:59

very, very lucky to still be here, as well.

0:04:590:05:01

So, every day is a blessing for me,

0:05:010:05:03

every day is a miracle I'm still here.

0:05:030:05:04

Although Adrian survived, the tumour is inoperable

0:05:060:05:09

and will never go away.

0:05:090:05:11

It's left him with stroke-like symptoms

0:05:110:05:13

and he relies on a wheelchair.

0:05:130:05:15

After leaving hospital,

0:05:160:05:17

the enormity of his illness took him to a really dark place.

0:05:170:05:21

But then, something incredible happened.

0:05:210:05:23

Sport seem to have a huge impact on your life?

0:05:260:05:28

It saved my life, in a way.

0:05:280:05:30

And I remember just sitting at home

0:05:300:05:32

and I saw the Paralympic Association

0:05:320:05:35

were holding tryout for Great Britain in 2012.

0:05:350:05:38

By this point it was 2009,

0:05:380:05:41

literally a year after them saying I had five days to live.

0:05:410:05:45

Adrian went to the events that was spotted by GB Paralympics,

0:05:450:05:49

who were trying to find future athletes.

0:05:490:05:52

He tried over a dozen Paralympic sports and discovered he had a

0:05:530:05:56

natural talent for wheelchair fencing.

0:05:560:05:59

It's transformed his life.

0:05:590:06:01

Had you ever fenced before?

0:06:020:06:03

Not really, no. But I picked up the sword,

0:06:030:06:06

the sabre sword for the first time and I felt it was destiny, in a way.

0:06:060:06:10

You turned into Zorro overnight.

0:06:100:06:11

Yeah! You know, Musketeers, you've been watching.

0:06:110:06:15

But, yeah, it was a wonderful feeling.

0:06:150:06:18

As well as sport, Adrian is heavily involved in charity work and

0:06:190:06:22

coaching children with disabilities.

0:06:220:06:26

And he would now like to help disabled youngster reach their full

0:06:260:06:29

sporting potential.

0:06:290:06:31

And now, the flipside is you want to help somebody else?

0:06:310:06:35

Most definitely.

0:06:350:06:37

Incredible that sport changed your life and now you

0:06:370:06:40

have the power, if you like, of

0:06:400:06:43

helping somebody else's like change?

0:06:430:06:45

Most definitely, most definitely.

0:06:450:06:47

Listen, in order for you to give back,

0:06:470:06:49

-I think we first need to go back...

-Sure.

-..on a little journey,

0:06:490:06:52

-if you fancy?

-I'm excited.

-OK, great.

0:06:520:06:54

Well, I'll go and get the car and we'll get going, shall we?

0:06:540:06:57

-Wonderful.

-I'll see you in a bit.

0:06:570:06:58

OK, see you in a minute.

0:06:580:07:00

We are taking Adrian on a trip back in time to remind him of what he's

0:07:030:07:07

achieved since his life changed dramatically.

0:07:070:07:10

And we're hoping it will make him more determined

0:07:100:07:12

to help someone today.

0:07:120:07:15

So, have you got any idea where we're heading off to?

0:07:150:07:17

Erm.. Well, we're in Aylesbury, so I'm thinking maybe

0:07:170:07:21

-home of the Paralympics, Stoke Mandeville?

-Could be.

0:07:210:07:24

I think so, anyway.

0:07:240:07:26

I remember some of the streets.

0:07:260:07:28

We are indeed heading to Stoke Mandeville,

0:07:280:07:30

the home of the Paralympics.

0:07:300:07:32

The Stoke Mandeville Hospital was founded in 1832,

0:07:340:07:38

but it was during the Second World War in 1944,

0:07:380:07:41

that its National Spinal Injury Centre was opened to treat

0:07:410:07:44

military casualties by a renowned specialist, Dr Ludwig Guttmann.

0:07:440:07:49

He strongly believed in sport being crucial to building up

0:07:490:07:52

physical strength and self-confidence.

0:07:520:07:55

And it's where Adrian first discovered his

0:07:560:07:58

hidden talent for wheelchair fencing.

0:07:580:08:02

Sport's gave me a passion, gave me a life, again in a way.

0:08:020:08:04

Actually, sport saved my life.

0:08:040:08:06

Because it gave me something to wake up for in the morning,

0:08:060:08:09

to help me just to try and, not overcome my disability,

0:08:090:08:13

-but to deal with it.

-Right.

0:08:130:08:15

Where you sporty before?

0:08:150:08:17

I never really honestly thought about competing for Great Britain

0:08:170:08:21

in any way, shape or form, but it turned out that way,

0:08:210:08:25

and it's just been an absolute phenomenal journey.

0:08:250:08:28

And wheelchair fencing, who knew?

0:08:280:08:31

Who knew?

0:08:310:08:32

The roots of competitive fencing date back to the 15th century when

0:08:330:08:37

it was developed from traditional swordsmanship skills that had been

0:08:370:08:40

used for centuries in duels and as self-defence.

0:08:400:08:44

In modern-day fencing, two competitors score points

0:08:440:08:47

when their swords make contact with their opponent.

0:08:470:08:50

With the winner being the first to reach 15 points.

0:08:500:08:53

And how did you feel then, when you started fencing,

0:08:550:08:58

-was it the most natural thing in the world?

-Erm...

0:08:580:09:01

Yeah. In a way it was, actually.

0:09:010:09:04

I thought, "This is actually really cool", and then you started to talk

0:09:040:09:06

about the psychology side behind sport,

0:09:060:09:09

behind my chosen weapon.

0:09:090:09:12

And that just blew my mind.

0:09:120:09:14

Wheelchair fencing was developed at Stoke Mandeville.

0:09:150:09:18

Fencing is one of the core sports that's featured in every one of the

0:09:180:09:22

modern Olympic Games and the Paralympics.

0:09:220:09:24

Sadly, despite Adrian's promising wheelchair fencing career,

0:09:280:09:31

his ambitions to take part in the 2012 London Paralympics

0:09:310:09:35

were dealt a cruel blow.

0:09:350:09:38

Because you were training for the Paralympics,

0:09:380:09:41

-but then you got injured, didn't you?

-Yeah, I was devastated.

0:09:410:09:44

I was training so hard and it was going amazingly well.

0:09:440:09:48

And then we were in Spain for warm-weather training.

0:09:480:09:52

A nice, light competition before London, and I blew my rotator cuff,

0:09:520:09:57

which was absolutely devastating for myself.

0:09:570:10:00

I was crushed.

0:10:000:10:02

Especially with everything you'd been through?

0:10:020:10:04

I ended up going to London, but as an athlete and a spectator,

0:10:040:10:08

-you know, shouting on and cheering on Team GB.

-How was that?

0:10:080:10:11

It was amazing, but also really devastating.

0:10:110:10:14

Although taking part in the 14th Paralympics wasn't to be,

0:10:160:10:20

wheelchair fencing transformed Adrian's life.

0:10:200:10:23

I guess you've probably guessed where we're going now?

0:10:240:10:26

Ah, yes. We've just turned the corner

0:10:260:10:29

to Stoke Mandeville.

0:10:290:10:31

It was on this site where the idea of the Paralympics began.

0:10:340:10:38

In 1948, the hospital's spinal specialist, Dr Guttmann,

0:10:380:10:42

organised the first Stoke Mandeville Games

0:10:420:10:44

for disabled British World War II casualties.

0:10:440:10:48

It was a big success, and for 12 years,

0:10:480:10:50

the International Stoke Mandeville Games For The Paralysed

0:10:500:10:53

were held here.

0:10:530:10:54

In 1960, the competition was moved to Rome,

0:10:540:10:57

where the Olympics were being held.

0:10:570:10:59

And from then on in, we officially had the Paralympic Games.

0:10:590:11:03

Such was the importance of sport to the hospital

0:11:030:11:06

that a stadium was built in the grounds in the 1960s,

0:11:060:11:09

which got a complete refurb in 2003.

0:11:090:11:12

So this is it, isn't it? This is the main reception?

0:11:160:11:18

Yep. This is it, Stoke Mandeville Stadium

0:11:180:11:21

and home of Team GB.

0:11:210:11:24

And, wow, it hasn't changed whatsoever.

0:11:240:11:28

-No?

-No, not whatsoever, it's absolutely...

0:11:280:11:31

Cafe's still there where we used to throw carbs down ourselves

0:11:310:11:35

just to prepare for another eight hours of training.

0:11:350:11:38

-We'll pop-out, shall we?

-Yeah, definitely.

-OK.

0:11:380:11:40

This is where Adrian used to come for one week every month to train

0:11:420:11:46

and compete for his national and international competitions

0:11:460:11:49

as a wheelchair fencer.

0:11:490:11:51

-This is it.

-Here we are, Stoke Mandeville.

0:11:510:11:54

Is it a feeling of coming home, almost?

0:11:540:11:56

Definitely, it's definitely nostalgia, you know...

0:11:560:12:00

I can feel the pain in my muscles already

0:12:010:12:03

thinking about all the training I used to do here.

0:12:030:12:05

But also, as well, it's...

0:12:050:12:08

just the smell and the atmosphere of Stoke Mandeville,

0:12:080:12:11

there's nothing like it. It is very special.

0:12:110:12:13

-It's full-on, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:12:130:12:15

Obviously this is where we used to train.

0:12:150:12:17

If we wasn't actually competing or fencing, this is where we were,

0:12:170:12:20

lots of core work, because obviously we're wheelchair users so it's all

0:12:200:12:24

about the core moving.

0:12:240:12:25

It brings back some amazing, amazing, painful memories.

0:12:250:12:28

-Plus some amazing ones, as well.

-I tell you what, it worked.

0:12:280:12:31

-Shall we carry on?

-Yeah, yeah. Definitely.

0:12:310:12:33

-Where next?

-OK, we're just go around the corner here to the hall.

0:12:330:12:37

This is where we used to train as well in fencing.

0:12:370:12:40

Lots of international training as well as competing, as well.

0:12:400:12:44

Adrian had been training for a place on the wheelchair fencing team for

0:12:440:12:47

the London 2012 Paralympic Games

0:12:470:12:50

in this very sports hall.

0:12:500:12:52

Yeah, I'm just looking at it. I just want to kind of, just...

0:12:520:12:55

savour this moment, just for a second. It's absolutely amazing.

0:12:550:12:58

It's like...ah!

0:12:580:12:59

It still smells the same, as well.

0:12:590:13:01

-Does it?

-Yeah, hard work and sweat, definitely.

0:13:010:13:04

When was the last time you were in here, then?

0:13:040:13:05

This was what, five years ago. Right.

0:13:050:13:08

Five years ago. So, we um...

0:13:080:13:10

-It smells like a gym, doesn't it?

-It does, it's a big, big, big gym.

0:13:100:13:14

And obviously we've got the auditorium, there,

0:13:140:13:16

so everyone can watch.

0:13:160:13:19

Athletes don't just train in wheelchair fencing here,

0:13:190:13:22

other sports include Paralympic table tennis,

0:13:220:13:24

and volleyball, and wheelchair badminton and basketball.

0:13:240:13:27

This room has seen a lot of sport, hasn't it?

0:13:300:13:32

It has, it has, a lot of sport,

0:13:320:13:34

and me included in it as well, in fencing.

0:13:340:13:37

What's it like being back?

0:13:370:13:38

Yeah. Goose bumps, this is where it all started for me.

0:13:380:13:41

This is where my new life started.

0:13:410:13:44

And... Yeah.

0:13:440:13:46

It saved my life as well, just being here, competing, training.

0:13:460:13:50

-Especially at elite level as well...

-Yeah.

0:13:510:13:54

..and, obviously, very, very proud.

0:13:540:13:56

It's an incredible place, it's massive.

0:13:560:13:58

Where do you think you would have been without this place

0:13:580:14:01

and without sport?

0:14:010:14:02

Erm, honestly, I don't know.

0:14:020:14:06

I was so low, and...

0:14:060:14:08

I was given this constant death sentence.

0:14:080:14:12

You know, "Any time now, any time now."

0:14:120:14:13

But do you think having the sport was almost a release from...

0:14:130:14:17

-the sentence you were under?

-Yes.

0:14:170:14:19

It was the getaway and it was something that my home life

0:14:190:14:23

and my personal life was here, and it allowed me to get away from that

0:14:230:14:27

home life and personal life to a stadium like Stoke Mandeville

0:14:270:14:31

that was full of inspiration, anyway.

0:14:310:14:34

So, how does it work? If you and I were fencing,

0:14:340:14:37

and even the thought of it, I have sweaty palms.

0:14:370:14:38

ADRIAN LAUGHS

0:14:380:14:39

-So, you would be there?

-Yeah, I would be in a piste,

0:14:390:14:42

it's a metal piste and because we lunge so much, it's so aggressive,

0:14:420:14:46

-we have to be strapped in.

-OK. So you're strapped in there?

0:14:460:14:48

So we'd have clamps, we're strapped in.

0:14:480:14:50

-Where would I be?

-You would be basically there.

-In this position?

0:14:500:14:52

-Yeah.

-Right.

-And you'd be strapped in.

-OK.

0:14:520:14:54

And, erm, hundredths of a second...

0:14:540:14:57

You can train for four years for the Paralympics

0:14:570:15:00

and in a 15-point

0:15:000:15:02

competition could be over in probably 30 seconds, if that.

0:15:020:15:06

So, you can train for so long and it can just be over with,

0:15:060:15:09

especially in Sabre, which is very, very fast.

0:15:090:15:11

I'm really pleased for you to come back here. Shall we carry on?

0:15:110:15:14

Yes, let's definitely do.

0:15:140:15:15

He may not be a Paralympian,

0:15:180:15:20

but Adrian did win three silver medals in

0:15:200:15:22

British national wheelchair fencing competitions.

0:15:220:15:26

One of the competitions was held here, at Stoke Mandeville.

0:15:260:15:29

Well, at that spot over there, Aled,

0:15:300:15:32

was the first place I won my first silver medal,

0:15:320:15:35

-competing at the Nationals, so the best of the best for Great Britain.

-OK.

0:15:350:15:38

And having just held a sword for three weeks prior to that was

0:15:380:15:42

really daunting. But it brings back great memories.

0:15:420:15:45

-How were you feeling when you were there?

-I was so nervous.

0:15:450:15:48

So nervous. We were surrounded, there where chairs everywhere,

0:15:480:15:51

lots of people and lots of noises regarding people shouting and

0:15:510:15:55

calling your name. It was absolutely fantastic.

0:15:550:15:58

This place is incredible, isn't it? You get that sense of greatness and

0:15:580:16:01

achievement for the whole of Stoke Mandeville really, don't you?

0:16:010:16:04

Most definitely, you go down the corridors and there's always lots of

0:16:040:16:08

pictures of past Olympians and Paralympians,

0:16:080:16:12

And you just really get that feeling that,

0:16:120:16:14

wow, this was the start of it in 1945.

0:16:140:16:17

-I'm glad we came back here. Come on, let's go.

-Thank you.

0:16:170:16:21

Coming up, the team have been on the hunt for a youngster with

0:16:210:16:23

disabilities, who's got the desire and determination

0:16:230:16:26

to succeed in sport.

0:16:260:16:27

And we think we found them.

0:16:280:16:30

He's a young boy with a big passion for wheelchair fencing,

0:16:310:16:34

so we think his story will resonate with Adrian.

0:16:340:16:37

He and his family think we are making a programme

0:16:390:16:41

about aspiring athletes.

0:16:410:16:43

They have no idea the real reason behind Adrian's visit.

0:16:430:16:46

And that they could be in for a generous gift.

0:16:460:16:48

Adrian has been on quite a trip down memory lane,

0:16:530:16:56

but there's one last place we've arranged for him to revisit,

0:16:560:16:59

this unassuming social club.

0:16:590:17:02

When he wasn't at Stoke Mandeville, Adrian came here to train.

0:17:020:17:06

Just reminds me of all the times that I've actually been here,

0:17:060:17:10

four times a week, four or five hour training sessions.

0:17:100:17:14

It is absolutely amazing, it hasn't changed a bit.

0:17:140:17:17

Inside, we've arranged a long overdue reunion with

0:17:170:17:20

the man who made it all happen.

0:17:200:17:22

-Adrian.

-And here's the man himself,

0:17:240:17:26

it's like he's never left after six years.

0:17:260:17:29

-How are you, man?

-How are you, John?

0:17:290:17:32

-Good to see you.

-Oh, it's good to see you.

0:17:320:17:35

John Townsend was Adrian's first coach and the man who

0:17:350:17:38

discovered his talent for fencing.

0:17:380:17:40

-It's like you've never gone.

-No! And you're...

0:17:400:17:43

My goodness.

0:17:430:17:44

79-year-old John was a national fencer for Team GB in the 1950s and

0:17:450:17:50

used his local club for Adrian's training.

0:17:500:17:54

-This little social club, it's where I learned everything.

-That's right.

0:17:540:17:56

-That's it.

-You know, and...

0:17:560:17:58

-from the master.

-Well, no, not all, you did have a little bit.

0:17:580:18:02

Maybe a little touch, but you gave me finesse.

0:18:020:18:05

Remember, you kept saying, "Adrian, fast is good but finesse, with finesse."

0:18:050:18:09

-That's right.

-And I'll never forget that.

0:18:090:18:11

It brings back so many memories.

0:18:110:18:13

It does. I can remember the first time I saw you.

0:18:130:18:15

I was down at Stoke Mandeville and I was giving a lesson and I looked up

0:18:150:18:20

and this face appeared at the door.

0:18:200:18:22

So, if you remember, I went down and opened the door and said,

0:18:220:18:26

"Would you like to come in?"

0:18:260:18:27

And you came in and you sat there for half an hour.

0:18:270:18:31

And I went...

0:18:310:18:33

"He's obviously very interested."

0:18:330:18:35

So I said, "Would you like a lesson?"

0:18:350:18:37

-And he said, "Yes."

-And we did.

-And you had your first lesson.

0:18:370:18:40

I did. And it was...

0:18:400:18:42

It was blatantly obvious that you were going to be a good fencer.

0:18:420:18:45

John put Adrian through his paces, but it was all worth it in the end.

0:18:450:18:50

I remember I was mainly on this side

0:18:500:18:54

and you gave me the lesson from here.

0:18:540:18:56

And this is where I learned.

0:18:560:18:58

You kept saying, "Adrian, fast, but finesse, finesse, finesse."

0:18:580:19:02

And it was just... It was vigorous, as well, because it just wasn't

0:19:020:19:05

-one hit and that was it.

-That's right.

0:19:050:19:06

It was constantly backwards and forwards to get my core muscles

0:19:060:19:09

-all working again.

-That's it.

0:19:090:19:11

That force to be reckoned with was just because of the training

0:19:110:19:14

you gave me, but also the knowledge

0:19:140:19:16

as well of what fencing's really about.

0:19:160:19:19

Because it's not just about wielding a sword around...

0:19:190:19:22

-Oh, no.

-..it's a chess game with swords, in a way.

0:19:220:19:25

-Exactly.

-And you taught me that, and taught me

0:19:250:19:28

what fencing really is about.

0:19:280:19:30

Well, you fell into the idea, the true idea of fencing

0:19:300:19:35

very, very quickly.

0:19:350:19:36

The vast majority of people think it's attack, attack, attack, attack.

0:19:360:19:39

-Yeah.

-And it's not.

-No.

0:19:390:19:41

You know, half of it's action

0:19:410:19:44

-and the other half is reaction.

-Mmm.

0:19:440:19:47

And it's reaction you used perfectly.

0:19:470:19:50

-Definitely.

-And that's what improved your fencing so fast.

0:19:500:19:53

Yeah. Also, I had a great coach as well, this is why...

0:19:530:19:57

Who was that?

0:19:570:19:58

ADRIAN LAUGHS

0:19:580:20:00

Reliving the intense training he went through to become a competitive

0:20:000:20:03

wheelchair fencing is spurring Adrian on

0:20:030:20:06

to want to help someone else.

0:20:060:20:07

It was fencing,

0:20:090:20:10

it was yourself who gave me that passion for the fight to live again.

0:20:100:20:14

-Oh, definitely.

-And I think,

0:20:140:20:16

it would be really good to do something for a child who loves

0:20:160:20:19

-sport as well.

-Oh, absolutely.

0:20:190:20:21

-What do you think?

-Yeah, absolutely brilliant.

0:20:210:20:23

No, I'm thrilled.

0:20:230:20:25

And if there's any way I can help, please me know.

0:20:250:20:28

OK, I really appreciate that, John, thank you.

0:20:280:20:30

Well, John, it's been a real pleasure.

0:20:300:20:32

Thank you so much for having me.

0:20:320:20:34

It's been a marvellous pleasure seeing you again.

0:20:340:20:37

It's fantastic to see you.

0:20:370:20:38

-Absolutely fantastic.

-And I really appreciate it.

0:20:380:20:42

I can never thank you enough.

0:20:420:20:43

-All the best.

-Take care.

0:20:430:20:45

This has been quite an emotional reunion for Adrian.

0:20:470:20:50

Coming back to the social club where I trained, and meeting John,

0:20:540:20:58

really stirred up so many memories in regards to

0:20:580:21:01

just how much sport helped and saved my life.

0:21:010:21:05

And it just made me feel even more

0:21:050:21:09

that giving back

0:21:090:21:11

is definitely something that I want to do.

0:21:110:21:13

Retracing the journey that started at Stoke Mandeville when he

0:21:150:21:18

discovered his talent for wheelchair fencing

0:21:180:21:21

has been truly motivating for Adrian.

0:21:210:21:24

-What's it like being back?

-Goose bumps.

0:21:240:21:27

-Really?

-Yeah. This is where it all started for me.

0:21:270:21:30

This is where my new life started.

0:21:300:21:33

But most importantly, reliving it all has helped focus Adrian's mind.

0:21:330:21:37

Sport changed your life and now you have the power, if you like,

0:21:370:21:40

of helping somebody else's life change.

0:21:400:21:43

Most definitely.

0:21:430:21:44

Taking Adrian back to where sport turned his life around,

0:21:460:21:49

was just incredible.

0:21:490:21:51

What a journey he's been and is going on.

0:21:510:21:54

You know, Adrian is passionate about helping young people,

0:21:540:21:56

so we found a very special little boy whose story

0:21:560:21:59

we think will really resonate with him.

0:21:590:22:02

Seven-year-old Jamie lives in a village in Northamptonshire with his

0:22:040:22:07

mum Lou, dad Andy, and his little sister Phoebe, who's three.

0:22:070:22:11

Jamie has cerebral palsy,

0:22:120:22:14

a condition that affects movement and coordination.

0:22:140:22:17

And for Jamie, it means he is unable to walk.

0:22:170:22:19

Having Jamie on a day-to-day basis, it's...

0:22:220:22:25

It has its challenges.

0:22:250:22:26

Simple things like going up and down the stairs,

0:22:260:22:29

getting to and from the car.

0:22:290:22:31

You almost take for granted all of the little things which

0:22:310:22:35

maybe a more able-bodied child can do.

0:22:350:22:37

He's such a lovely boy, he so positive.

0:22:370:22:40

He adapts to everything.

0:22:400:22:42

Jamie was three years old when he was diagnosed with

0:22:420:22:44

the neurological condition. It tore his parent's world apart.

0:22:440:22:49

When we were first told he had cerebral palsy, it was hard.

0:22:490:22:53

Very, very hard. And it's something we're still coming to terms with.

0:22:530:22:57

And I don't think I will ever get over that.

0:22:570:22:59

Then reality hit hard, when, aged just four,

0:22:590:23:02

Jamie was confined to a wheelchair.

0:23:020:23:04

Since Jamie lost his ability to walk, it was a shock, a real shock.

0:23:040:23:08

All your dreams you had for your child suddenly changed.

0:23:080:23:12

He doesn't know any different,

0:23:120:23:13

but it's the life we've lost having him and walking with him,

0:23:130:23:17

walking him to school, all the normal things that children do.

0:23:170:23:21

It's hard for him sometimes,

0:23:210:23:23

being a child he sees other children doing things

0:23:230:23:25

that he can't possibly do,

0:23:250:23:26

but we just try and enable him to do as much as we possibly can.

0:23:260:23:30

Jamie's parents, who are both teachers,

0:23:310:23:33

are determined to do everything they can to give Jamie the best in life.

0:23:330:23:37

One major decision they made was to move from London to

0:23:390:23:41

Northamptonshire, to be near family and afford a larger,

0:23:410:23:44

adaptable house for Jamie to grow up in.

0:23:440:23:47

It's a move we haven't looked back, the house is perfect for Jamie now.

0:23:470:23:51

In here, he can be himself, and he zips around the kitchen

0:23:510:23:54

and the hallway on his little skateboard, that he loves.

0:23:540:23:57

That, again, makes him more independent.

0:23:570:24:00

But the move has also marked another huge, positive effect for Jamie,

0:24:000:24:04

who, like Adrian, loves sport.

0:24:040:24:06

A year ago, just like Adrian,

0:24:070:24:08

Jamie discovered he had a natural talent and passion

0:24:080:24:11

for wheelchair fencing.

0:24:110:24:13

And incredibly, it was also at Stoke Mandeville.

0:24:130:24:16

He likes that challenge. I think it's a feeling of acceptance for Jamie.

0:24:160:24:19

He can actually compete and he sees the competition on an even keel.

0:24:190:24:23

He loves it. I'm looking forward to him being in the Olympics

0:24:230:24:26

as he gets older.

0:24:260:24:28

So with all these similarities and joint aspirations,

0:24:280:24:31

we thought they should meet.

0:24:310:24:33

Well, I'm here visiting Jamie today.

0:24:340:24:37

He has an interesting story, just like mine.

0:24:370:24:40

And I believe he has a passion for sport.

0:24:400:24:42

So, it's something that I'm looking forward to chatting to him about.

0:24:420:24:46

It's really important this meeting goes well,

0:24:460:24:48

as it could make a huge difference to Jamie.

0:24:480:24:52

Adrian wanted to specifically help a youngster in a wheelchair

0:24:520:24:54

with a promising sporting career.

0:24:540:24:57

The fact Jamie's into fencing is a bonus.

0:24:570:25:00

So, let's just hope they all hit it off.

0:25:000:25:02

Andy, hi. Adrian.

0:25:040:25:05

-Hi. How are you doing?

-It's a real pleasure, how are you?

0:25:050:25:08

-Please come in.

-Thank you very much.

0:25:080:25:11

Jamie and his family think we are making a programme

0:25:110:25:13

about aspiring athletes.

0:25:130:25:15

They have absolutely no idea that Jamie could be in for a

0:25:150:25:18

generous gift.

0:25:180:25:19

-Hi, guys.

-Hi.

-Hiya.

0:25:200:25:22

Hi, how are you?

0:25:220:25:24

-Good.

-You must be, Jamie?

0:25:240:25:27

-Yes.

-My name's Adrian, how are you?

0:25:270:25:29

-Good.

-You're looking well.

0:25:290:25:30

Let me have a guess, is it Phoebe?

0:25:300:25:33

Is that right?

0:25:330:25:35

Wow, and this is your sister?

0:25:350:25:36

-So, how are we today?

-Good.

0:25:360:25:38

Jamie was at a wheelchair sports camp for children at

0:25:380:25:42

Stoke Mandeville when the fencing bug took over,

0:25:420:25:44

and he hasn't looked back.

0:25:440:25:46

I've just noticed that you have

0:25:460:25:49

a sword on your couch.

0:25:490:25:52

-Is that right?

-No.

0:25:520:25:54

That's not a sword, is it?

0:25:540:25:56

-What is it then?

-It's a foil.

0:25:560:25:58

Wow, so how long have you been fencing?

0:25:580:26:01

-I don't really know.

-Not long?

0:26:010:26:03

-Just under a year, now.

-Just under a year? Wow.

0:26:030:26:06

And are you enjoying it?

0:26:060:26:08

What do you like about it?

0:26:080:26:10

Well... It's just good.

0:26:100:26:14

Can I have a look at it?

0:26:140:26:15

Let's have a look. Wow.

0:26:150:26:17

-MUM:

-Pass it over.

-Do you want to pass it to me?

0:26:170:26:19

Wow, this is a really cool foil.

0:26:190:26:22

That's absolutely amazing.

0:26:220:26:24

You've got your glove there as well?

0:26:240:26:26

With a special message on the thumb.

0:26:260:26:28

"The boss!"

0:26:280:26:29

I'm not the boss yet.

0:26:290:26:32

Not the boss yet.

0:26:320:26:34

Jamie has a real talent for fencing and has already started training

0:26:340:26:38

once a week with a Paralympian coach.

0:26:380:26:40

How does it make you feel when you actually hold that sword

0:26:400:26:44

-and you start fencing?

-Happy.

0:26:440:26:46

Does it make you happy?

0:26:460:26:48

Why does it make you happy?

0:26:480:26:50

Well, it just does.

0:26:500:26:53

When he first tried it,

0:26:530:26:55

he actually went back, rather than having lunch,

0:26:550:26:58

he said can I go back and try it again.

0:26:580:27:00

And he's really proud of it.

0:27:000:27:01

Everybody's proud of you doing it, aren't they?

0:27:010:27:03

That's great. Well, give me a high five on that.

0:27:030:27:06

Good. And I want you to tell me, as well,

0:27:060:27:09

if you win a medal, OK? And I'll come down and watch you as well.

0:27:090:27:12

-That would be good, wouldn't it?

-Fantastic, well done.

0:27:120:27:15

See you in a minute, bye.

0:27:150:27:16

There's no doubt Adrian can see a

0:27:160:27:18

little Paralympian in the making in Jamie.

0:27:180:27:20

But he wants to find out more about this young man,

0:27:200:27:24

and how the family cope.

0:27:240:27:25

So, Andy, tell me about Jamie's condition.

0:27:260:27:29

Jamie's like any other seven-year-old, loves what he loves,

0:27:290:27:32

loves his sport. It's just his legs don't work.

0:27:320:27:35

Jamie had a normal birth.

0:27:360:27:38

He was diagnosed at age three with cerebral palsy,

0:27:380:27:41

when his parents noticed he was late learning to walk.

0:27:410:27:45

Our world changed within a heartbeat and I think that was the hardest

0:27:450:27:48

thing. Thinking about it, it was tough for both of us, tough on us,

0:27:480:27:52

tough as a family as well.

0:27:520:27:54

But, you cope.

0:27:540:27:57

As devoted parents, Andy and Lou have made it their mission to keep a

0:27:570:28:00

positive can-do attitude with Jamie.

0:28:000:28:03

-I don't want to wrap my son up in cotton wool.

-No.

0:28:040:28:07

You know, yes, he has... He's differently abled...

0:28:070:28:10

but I want him to do what he wants to do.

0:28:100:28:12

I want him to go to university, I want him to have high aspirations,

0:28:120:28:15

I want him to...

0:28:150:28:16

be resilient, inspire, succeed, have his own house.

0:28:160:28:20

-You know, live his life...

-Mh-hm.

0:28:200:28:22

..and I think that's...

0:28:220:28:25

-the way we've adapted to...

-Yeah.

0:28:250:28:28

.. to Jamie and his disability, really.

0:28:280:28:30

Sport is hugely important in the household.

0:28:320:28:35

Andy is a PE teacher and, possibly, that's where Jamie gets

0:28:350:28:39

his passion and sporting ability.

0:28:390:28:41

Tell me about Jamie and sport.

0:28:420:28:44

Because he... Just looking at him, he just loves...

0:28:440:28:48

I can just tell straightaway.

0:28:480:28:50

We've always been quite sporty as a family, anyway.

0:28:500:28:52

I've always believed in the power of sport and I believe what it can

0:28:520:28:56

offer. I think then especially for Jamie,

0:28:560:28:59

even when pre-Jamie's diagnosis of his condition,

0:28:590:29:02

we used to walk round the park and play tennis.

0:29:020:29:04

I thought I had the next Andy Murray on my hands.

0:29:040:29:07

At two and a half, three years old,

0:29:070:29:08

-he could hold a rally with me over the net.

-Wow.

0:29:080:29:10

At three. I was thinking, "Wow...

0:29:100:29:13

"I might have a little star here."

0:29:130:29:15

He loves basketball, he loves tennis.

0:29:150:29:17

But as soon as he went to this camp,

0:29:170:29:18

-there was a coach there who had the try fencing equipment...

-Right.

0:29:180:29:22

..and Jamie fell in love.

0:29:220:29:24

For Adrian, it's clear Jamie has the drive and the determination to

0:29:240:29:27

succeed in his new-found love of wheelchair fencing.

0:29:270:29:31

Jamie can rattle off the different commands, the different movements,

0:29:310:29:35

the different sets of...

0:29:350:29:38

you know, parry, riposte, and...

0:29:380:29:41

disengage, and different movement patterns.

0:29:410:29:44

And I sometimes have to pinch myself and take a step back and go,

0:29:440:29:48

"He's only seven."

0:29:480:29:49

But, hey, listen, a budding Paralympian in the making,

0:29:490:29:52

it starts now, doesn't it?

0:29:520:29:53

I mean, he makes us proud everyday.

0:29:530:29:56

Although Jamie is not competing yet,

0:29:570:29:59

Adrian wants to find out how he can help this

0:29:590:30:01

Paralympian fencer in the making.

0:30:010:30:03

Fencing, it's one of the sports I chose to be one of

0:30:050:30:09

the most expensive ones, just because of the fact of

0:30:090:30:11

-how much kit we have to have.

-Yeah.

0:30:110:30:13

What does he have at the moment, is it just the...?

0:30:130:30:15

He has the glove and his foil.

0:30:150:30:17

At the moment, he borrows everything else.

0:30:170:30:20

OK. I think it would be probably inspiring a little bit later on,

0:30:200:30:24

once he does it a little bit more and he really likes it,

0:30:240:30:27

-that he finally may get his own kit, at one point.

-Definitely.

0:30:270:30:31

Cos that makes you feel more part of it than anything else

0:30:310:30:34

because, "This is my own kit."

0:30:340:30:36

-Not just something...

-He's borrowed.

-..borrowed, and that, in itself

0:30:360:30:39

would be pretty cool for him.

0:30:390:30:40

Yeah, I mean, it's something that I

0:30:400:30:42

didn't know much about really at all.

0:30:420:30:44

I think we can safely say Adrian has found a kindred spirit

0:30:460:30:48

in little Jamie.

0:30:480:30:51

Well, Andy, I really appreciate you inviting me here today.

0:30:510:30:54

-It's an absolute pleasure.

-It has been a real pleasure and

0:30:540:30:56

meeting your family has been inspirational to me as well.

0:30:560:30:59

So, thank you so much for having me into your home.

0:30:590:31:02

-Absolute pleasure.

-Thank you.

0:31:020:31:03

Thank you.

0:31:030:31:06

It's pretty clear Jamie and his family have made

0:31:060:31:09

a huge impression on Adrian.

0:31:090:31:11

It was great to, not only see Jamie, but obviously his family as well,

0:31:170:31:21

who have been affected just as much as he has been.

0:31:210:31:25

But I've seen his dad, who is a PE teacher,

0:31:250:31:29

you know, encouraging him to sport and obviously, as well,

0:31:290:31:33

wheelchair fencing,

0:31:330:31:34

which is, obviously, my sport and the sport I'm passionate about,

0:31:340:31:37

is absolutely fantastic to see.

0:31:370:31:39

Adrian and Jamie obviously share a huge love of wheelchair fencing.

0:31:410:31:45

And in Jamie, Adrian can see an enthusiasm and a talent he also

0:31:470:31:51

discovered when he started this Paralympian sport.

0:31:510:31:55

But, being absolutely sure he should be helping Jamie,

0:31:550:31:58

is not a decision to be taken lightly.

0:31:580:32:00

So, Adrian is getting advice from the person who knows him best.

0:32:000:32:04

His fiancee Lucinda.

0:32:040:32:05

I've had this amazing journey, and,

0:32:080:32:12

wow, going back to Stoke Mandeville where it first started. And it was

0:32:120:32:16

really overwhelming, this journey of

0:32:160:32:20

fencing and just going back to where

0:32:200:32:23

it all began in the auditorium, which was really, really cool.

0:32:230:32:28

And then having this wonderful opportunity to see John again,

0:32:280:32:31

which has been so long, and go through how it all started with

0:32:310:32:34

him coaching me. So that's been amazing.

0:32:340:32:37

I remember how ill you were, and your life had just

0:32:370:32:40

changed dramatically, literally overnight, and

0:32:400:32:43

that changed my life as well.

0:32:430:32:45

The conversations that we had, you know, where's your...

0:32:450:32:48

what's the meaning of your life, what's your life going to be,

0:32:480:32:52

what's the point of you?

0:32:520:32:53

And it was so upsetting to hear, and then you found fencing

0:32:530:32:57

and it gave you a purpose and it gave you something to strive for.

0:32:570:33:01

To top this journey, meeting this young seven-year-old chap,

0:33:010:33:05

and he loves sport and he loves wheelchair fencing of all the sports

0:33:050:33:10

he could choose. And it's a...

0:33:100:33:12

Wow, he's so passionate about it.

0:33:120:33:14

And I thought, "Wow, that's absolutely amazing."

0:33:140:33:16

It really kind of touched my heart.

0:33:160:33:17

You know how it changed me?

0:33:170:33:19

-Yeah.

-You know, for the better, and it got me to where I am today.

0:33:190:33:22

Definitely, I think if it hadn't have been for that,

0:33:220:33:25

you wouldn't be where you are now and you wouldn't be who you are now.

0:33:250:33:29

It was a great opportunity for you.

0:33:290:33:31

I don't want, maybe, Jamie or his family to go through all the

0:33:310:33:34

struggles we did. Like, financially it cost so much money

0:33:340:33:37

-to set up...

-Yeah.

-..and things like this.

0:33:370:33:39

I just feel it would be a great opportunity to help them out.

0:33:390:33:43

Well, I think if you think that it's something you want to do,

0:33:430:33:46

and you are able to do it, then you definitely should.

0:33:460:33:48

There's no reason why you shouldn't.

0:33:480:33:51

It sounds like you've had a wonderful experience,

0:33:510:33:55

so you should definitely help them.

0:33:550:33:57

-You should.

-Thank you.

0:33:570:33:58

Hearing that Lucinda is all for helping Jamie,

0:34:010:34:03

means everything to Adrian.

0:34:030:34:05

Now, we've gone back it's time for Adrian to go forward and work out

0:34:050:34:08

exactly how he can make a difference to Jamie's young fencing career.

0:34:080:34:13

Right, time to catch up with Adrian, I think.

0:34:180:34:20

I can't wait to hear what he made of young Jamie.

0:34:200:34:23

They're both such courageous people,

0:34:230:34:25

both inspirational in their own rights.

0:34:250:34:27

And Adrian has been very much a fighter and I think he might have

0:34:270:34:30

met his match in little Jamie.

0:34:300:34:32

But I wonder if he can find it in his heart to help this

0:34:320:34:35

budding fencing talent. Let's go and find out.

0:34:350:34:38

I've arranged to meet Adrian just up the road from the park where Jamie

0:34:390:34:42

and his family are enjoying an afternoon out.

0:34:420:34:45

So time to discover precisely how Adrian intends helping Jamie further

0:34:450:34:50

his Paralympian dream.

0:34:500:34:51

So, you met up with Jamie, how did it go?

0:34:520:34:54

He's fantastic, Jamie's such a great kid, and it was just his family,

0:34:540:34:58

as well, the unit, that they are all together as one.

0:34:580:35:01

They are going through it all. And, erm...

0:35:010:35:04

It was wonderful, really was.

0:35:040:35:06

-He loves his sport, doesn't he?

-He does.

0:35:060:35:08

And he loves my sport at the best.

0:35:080:35:10

Wheelchair fencing, which for such a young child,

0:35:100:35:12

normally it's football or rugby, but no, he loves my sport.

0:35:120:35:16

He's fantastic, he's really inspiring for me as well.

0:35:160:35:19

Could you see and understand, I suppose,

0:35:190:35:21

the struggle that he's going through?

0:35:210:35:23

Yes, most definitely.

0:35:230:35:25

I've also been there myself as well.

0:35:250:35:26

So, it was quite emotional for me, if I'm really honest with you,

0:35:260:35:29

talking to him.

0:35:290:35:30

I can relate to what he's going through, and this is the

0:35:300:35:34

reason why it's touched me so much.

0:35:340:35:35

It's great he's got the passion, though.

0:35:350:35:37

So, do you reckon you can help him at all?

0:35:370:35:39

I definitely think so.

0:35:390:35:41

I'm really excited about it. I'm really...

0:35:410:35:44

-You've a big grin...

-I know. I'm really, really excited.

0:35:440:35:47

Just because I know how much it changed my life, and it will change

0:35:470:35:51

his and his family's as well.

0:35:510:35:52

So what are you going to do?

0:35:520:35:54

Well, because he keeps borrowing all this kit,

0:35:540:35:58

what I've decided is I'm going to purchase the entire lot for him.

0:35:580:36:01

So, not only the training equipment,

0:36:010:36:03

but also the competition equipment as well, which is...

0:36:030:36:07

..a huge amount.

0:36:080:36:09

But for him to take that next up, it's what he needs.

0:36:090:36:12

So, I'm going to do it.

0:36:120:36:14

Gosh, I wouldn't have no idea how much that stuff sort of costs?

0:36:140:36:17

You're looking probably just over £1,000.

0:36:170:36:19

-Wow!

-But what I've done,

0:36:190:36:20

I've gone a little bit extra because I'm so excited

0:36:200:36:23

-and bought him everything.

-Right, OK.

0:36:230:36:25

-Just got the shop.

-I've just done it.

0:36:250:36:27

So, it's going to be well over that.

0:36:270:36:30

Goodness me, that's very, very generous of you.

0:36:300:36:32

No, it's my pleasure.

0:36:320:36:33

You can tell, it's given me so much... It's just so much

0:36:330:36:36

enjoyment to do it.

0:36:360:36:37

Have you put all your thoughts down in a letter for the family to read?

0:36:370:36:40

I have, I have.

0:36:400:36:42

And I'm looking forward to giving it to Andy so he can read it out.

0:36:420:36:45

OK, I know they are having a little day out around the corner,

0:36:450:36:48

-so let's leave these, shall we, and just go and do it now?

-Definitely.

0:36:480:36:51

-Cos that smile on your face says it all. Come on, let's go.

-OK.

0:36:510:36:54

It's the moment we've all been waiting for,

0:36:540:36:56

coming clean to Jamie and his family about what we've really been up to.

0:36:560:36:59

And revealing to them that Jamie's in for a game-changing gift.

0:36:590:37:03

So, Jamie and his family are having a little get-together here.

0:37:050:37:09

They have no idea we are coming, of course.

0:37:090:37:11

-It's great.

-It's going to be a nice surprise, isn't it?

-It is, it is. Really looking forward to it.

0:37:110:37:15

-Are you nervous?

-No, not at all, I'm more excited, if I'm honest.

0:37:150:37:19

Yeah. I'm excited too.

0:37:190:37:20

He such a great kid and it's a wonderful family,

0:37:200:37:22

-so, happy to do this.

-I can't wait to see his face.

0:37:220:37:25

I know, he's going to be like, "Oh, my goodness, what's going on?"

0:37:250:37:32

Look at that branch there, Jamie.

0:37:320:37:34

-Hello!

-Hi!

-How are you?

-Hi, guys.

0:37:360:37:37

-How are you? I'm Aled Jones from the BBC, nice to meet you.

-Hi!

0:37:390:37:44

How are you, nice to see you.

0:37:440:37:45

-How you doing?

-Hi, how are you?

-Can you say hi, Jamie?

0:37:450:37:47

Now, listen, you thought we were making a programme

0:37:470:37:50

about aspiring athletes.

0:37:500:37:51

It's not the full story, just to let you know, is it?

0:37:530:37:56

It's not, Aled. I was so taken back by Jamie's story,

0:37:560:38:00

and just how passionate

0:38:000:38:02

you all are as a family,

0:38:020:38:03

that I've wrote a few words down in this letter

0:38:030:38:08

that I'd like you to read out loud for me, Andy, if you don't mind?

0:38:080:38:11

I'd love to. Sorry, it's a bit of a shock. Sorry about that.

0:38:110:38:13

THEY LAUGH

0:38:130:38:15

I was too busy picking blackberries.

0:38:150:38:16

-Yeah, you were. Having far too good a time. Do you want me to take the envelope for you?

-Yeah.

-Right.

0:38:160:38:20

"Dear Jamie and family.

0:38:200:38:22

"Words cannot express just how inspiring and emotional it was

0:38:220:38:26

"meeting you all. Even though it's been less than a week since we met,

0:38:260:38:30

"I often find myself thinking, 'I wonder how the fam is.'"

0:38:300:38:34

He's fine.

0:38:340:38:36

"Andy, our heartfelt chat at the kitchen table still resonates and

0:38:360:38:41

"it has truly touched me how a seven-year-old boy's life story can

0:38:410:38:45

"be so close to mine. I'm thrilled Jamie has found something that saved my life.

0:38:450:38:49

"I was so taken aback by Jamie's passion,

0:38:490:38:51

"his belief in himself and his love of sport, which we both share,

0:38:510:38:55

"wheelchair fencing. With this in mind,

0:38:550:38:57

"I'd like to give Jamie the full practice and competition fencing kit

0:38:570:39:01

-"and equipment he needs to take the next step in fencing." Wow!

-Yay!

0:39:010:39:05

"It is my honour to play a small part in supporting this inspiring

0:39:050:39:09

"young man, and I hope Jamie continues to live by my motto,

0:39:090:39:12

"inspire, believe, succeed."

0:39:120:39:14

Yay!

0:39:140:39:16

-That's amazing.

-Wow, what do you say?

-Wow, Jamie.

0:39:160:39:19

-Thank you.

-Gold medal on the way, I reckon.

0:39:190:39:21

Definitely. Definitely.

0:39:210:39:23

-Wow, Jamie.

-And I want your autograph in a couple of years, as well.

0:39:230:39:26

-Will it make a big difference?

-It'll be amazing. Yeah, he's...

0:39:260:39:29

We've been fortunate enough to where we are now just having his own foil,

0:39:300:39:35

but to have everything, would be...

0:39:350:39:38

-Fantastic.

-Oh. And that's...

0:39:380:39:39

PHOEBE LAUGHS

0:39:390:39:40

Are you happy for your brother, as well?

0:39:400:39:42

-I'm a little bit speechless, really.

-I'm a little bit speechless.

0:39:420:39:44

Just think, you've got your own competition kit,

0:39:440:39:48

your own practice kit, as well, so you have everything.

0:39:480:39:52

Is that amazing?

0:39:520:39:54

I think he's overwhelmed.

0:39:540:39:56

-You've gone shy?

-That's very unlike Jamie, as well.

0:39:560:39:58

-JAMIE:

-Thank you.

-You're welcome, give me a high five.

0:39:580:40:02

Good job.

0:40:020:40:03

Yeah, I think I want one as well. Is that all right?

0:40:030:40:05

OK, Aled, would you do the honours, presenting Jamie with his equipment.

0:40:050:40:09

Adrian's not messing about. Jamie won't have to wait for his gift.

0:40:110:40:14

Adrian's brought everything with him.

0:40:140:40:17

Oh, my word.

0:40:170:40:19

So, what we've got, we have the full kit here.

0:40:190:40:21

So, let's look at your practice kit first.

0:40:210:40:24

This is your jacket, and then...

0:40:240:40:27

this is called plastron, so this goes underneath your jacket

0:40:270:40:31

-to protect you.

-Wow, check that out.

0:40:310:40:33

You have your bib, that goes over your jacket.

0:40:330:40:36

So... And then what else do we have, it's like Christmas for me, I love this.

0:40:360:40:40

So, we have your mask, which is an extra small,

0:40:400:40:42

so hopefully that will be good.

0:40:420:40:44

I've even bought you Great Britain fencing socks as well.

0:40:440:40:48

-Amazing.

-Amazing.

-And then my favourite bits,

0:40:480:40:51

I have bought you two brand-new foils.

0:40:510:40:54

-Oh, Wow.

-Wow.

0:40:540:40:55

So you have two brand-new foils and they're your size as well.

0:40:550:41:00

So what do you think about that?

0:41:000:41:01

-Thank you.

-You're welcome.

0:41:010:41:03

-It's amazing.

-Amazing, aren't they?

0:41:030:41:05

-Thank you so much, guys.

-Oh, no, it's a real pleasure. It's a real pleasure.

0:41:070:41:10

Listen we'll leave you to your afternoon together,

0:41:100:41:13

and I can't wait to see you in the gear.

0:41:130:41:15

-Yeah, yeah. Definitely.

-See you later.

-Thanks, guys.

-Take care.

0:41:150:41:18

Bye! See you later.

0:41:180:41:19

-Well done, mate.

-Thank you.

0:41:200:41:22

-That was lovely.

-That went well, didn't it?

-Yeah.

0:41:220:41:25

It's got your favourite colour on it.

0:41:250:41:27

-They are bigger than you!

-I think they're going to go right up to your nose.

0:41:270:41:30

Ecstatic. He's been through a lot, and I think to have the opportunity,

0:41:300:41:33

it's fantastic. We just didn't expect it.

0:41:330:41:35

It was jaw-dropping, I think you could say.

0:41:350:41:38

-How is it, Jamie?

-Really good.

0:41:380:41:41

-Properly special, isn't it?

-And, look - they go up to here.

0:41:410:41:45

It's amazing. I'm really happy

0:41:450:41:49

to have more equipment.

0:41:490:41:51

That's amazing.

0:41:510:41:53

Let's see how that fits. It's even got its own...

0:41:540:41:57

You don't even have to slide it on.

0:41:570:41:59

The way that Jamie buried himself into his daddy's legs,

0:41:590:42:02

I think he was very surprised and taken aback by that appearance.

0:42:020:42:05

It was an amazing feeling and I'm completely overwhelmed

0:42:050:42:07

and inspired myself.

0:42:070:42:09

How does it feel?

0:42:090:42:11

Quite heavy.

0:42:120:42:13

My next thing is hopefully going to the Olympics

0:42:130:42:16

and do wheelchair fencing.

0:42:160:42:19

It makes me feel amazing,

0:42:190:42:20

just my pleasure to do what I could to help him along the way.

0:42:200:42:24

Silence speaks a thousand words with Jamie,

0:42:240:42:26

so I think he realises just the enormity of what he's got,

0:42:260:42:28

which is unbelievable, an unbelievable gift.

0:42:280:42:32

What an overwhelming experience that was.

0:42:340:42:36

Adrian can obviously see Jamie has so much sporting potential and now,

0:42:360:42:40

thanks to Adrian's generosity, well,

0:42:400:42:41

we could well have a future fencing champion on our hands.

0:42:410:42:46

Time will tell. We wish Jamie well in all he does.
