HE CALLS | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
Deep in the heart of Central Australia lives a family like no other. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:09
CAWING | 0:00:09 | 0:00:10
This is Brolga... | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
..a man who has sacrificed everything to give orphaned kangaroos a second chance at life. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:21
Some people, they think that's a bit strange, a bloke being a mum to an orphaned kangaroo. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:26
But I do it because I see what other people don't see. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
I see that little joey call out for help. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:33
From his tin shack hidden in the bush, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:37
Brolga raises his babies until they're ready to be released. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:41
And, just as with any family, each new day brings fresh challenges. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
Tonight, we meet Rocky, a tearaway teenage wallaby who's ready to leave home. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:56
How do you keep control of him? | 0:00:58 | 0:00:59
Well, basically, I don't! | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
Youngsters Rex and Ruby are hopping mad... | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
They've got this massive spring in their step and they don't know how to control it. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
And Brolga and Cynthia play catch the kangaroo... | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
I did it, I did it, I did it! | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
Yippee! | 0:01:18 | 0:01:19
Good catch. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:20
Welcome to the world of Kangaroo Dundee. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
It's morning in the outback, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
and breakfast time for seven-month-old Rex and Ruby. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:42
It's a big day for Brolga's youngest orphan joeys. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:52
Recently, they've been getting curious about what lies outside the safety of home. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:59
Today, they get to find out. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
They've been in the pouch most of their life, they haven't experienced anything else. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:10
So what I've got to do now is take them out the back and give them a little hop. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:15
Since being rescued at the roadside three weeks ago, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:21
they've only left their pillowcase pouches whilst inside Brolga's shack. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:25
This is a whole new world to them, so this is really a great time. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
He aims to eventually release Rex and Ruby to the wilds of his sanctuary. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:37
It's a long way off, but their journey to freedom has to start somewhere. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:42
And the next important step is introducing them to Brolga's backyard. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:48
First out of the basket is Rex... | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
..and he can hardly contain his excitement. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
Rex, he's off, you can see it in him | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
that he's really enjoying the outing of having a little trip away from the pouch. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:07
Next, it's Ruby's turn to face the world. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
But for this timid little joey... | 0:03:19 | 0:03:21
..it's all a bit much. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
Little Ruby is a lot more scared. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:32
Don't go back to bed yet, you haven't had a run yet. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:36
I can see in her she's had a pretty traumatic experience with losing her mum. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:44
She's gone from a lot of love to no love, so she's really latching on to me to get that love back. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:52
Brolga's backyard may be small, | 0:03:58 | 0:04:00
but for these young explorers it's full of new sights, smells and sounds. | 0:04:00 | 0:04:08
BIRD NOISES | 0:04:08 | 0:04:10
It's a small setback. | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
You're supposed to be out having a run. | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
You're supposed to be out having a run. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:29
This may all seem like a bit of fun, | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
but there's a serious side to this adventure. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
It's essential that Brolga teaches Rex and Ruby the skills they need in order to survive. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:41
Now is the time they've got to start to stretch those legs, and start to hop. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:47
But it's a very uncoordinated hop. | 0:04:48 | 0:04:50
They've got this massive spring in their step and they don't know how to control it. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
You all right? | 0:05:08 | 0:05:09
All this hopping is tiring work, | 0:05:24 | 0:05:27
and Ruby decides it's time for a well-earned rest. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:31
That's not your pouch, that's not your pouch. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
Ah, that's better, isn't it? | 0:05:35 | 0:05:37
You just wanted to go to bed. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:39
With Rex and Ruby safely back in the shack, | 0:05:47 | 0:05:50
Brolga heads out into his sanctuary. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
This 90 acres of fenced-off bushland is home to Brolga's family of 28 kangaroos. | 0:05:54 | 0:06:01
Today, he's come to check on Ella. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:06
She's been with Brolga for years, so he knows her well. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:12
Normally outgoing, recently she's been withdrawn, | 0:06:13 | 0:06:17
and won't let youngest son Terry into her pouch. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:21
Brolga thinks she may have had another baby. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
To find out, he'll need to examine her... | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
..but first he must distract Ella with her favourite food. | 0:06:33 | 0:06:37
I especially got these carrots today. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:40
It's all I went into town for. | 0:06:40 | 0:06:43
-HE CLUCKS -Mmm? | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
Wow! | 0:06:52 | 0:06:53 | |
It's tiny, absolutely tiny. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:56
Brolga's right, Ella has become a mum all over again. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:08
This little baby is under a day old. | 0:07:11 | 0:07:15
The baby just has two little forearms, | 0:07:16 | 0:07:19
its back legs are not yet developed. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
The eyes are just like little dots of a pen. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
The reason it's so small is that kangaroo babies, or pinkies, | 0:07:31 | 0:07:36
are born after just 33 days in the womb. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:39
A lot of people think the baby kangaroo is born in the pouch. No, it's not. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:47
It's born just like we were born, but then has a momentous climb, by instinct, | 0:07:47 | 0:07:54
holding onto Mum's stomach hair | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
to get up to the pouch entrance | 0:07:57 | 0:07:59
and climb inside. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
The newest member of Brolga's family will stay safely tucked in Ella's pouch for around six months. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:10
Seeing a baby kangaroo in the pouch is the most exciting thing to me, | 0:08:14 | 0:08:19
it's an absolute miracle of life. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:23
But not all baby kangaroos are so lucky. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:32
Ten miles away in Alice Springs, a shaking little orphan has no pouch to go to. | 0:08:32 | 0:08:38
The next best place is an incubator. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
All right, young man, | 0:08:43 | 0:08:45
first cab off the rank, and time for your feed. | 0:08:45 | 0:08:49
This four-month-old pinky is being looked after by Brolga's friend | 0:08:49 | 0:08:52
and fellow kangaroo mum, Cynthia Lynch. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
That's a good boy. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
Oh, yes, I know that you're ready for a feed, aren't you? | 0:08:58 | 0:09:02
That's a good boy. There we are. How's that? | 0:09:02 | 0:09:06
When he was first brought to Cynthia a week ago, | 0:09:07 | 0:09:10
his eyes were still shut, and he was in a bad way. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:13
Every day is a plus, and I think he's just got the attitude that he's going to make it, | 0:09:16 | 0:09:22
haven't you, sweetheart, eh? | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
And now he's got his eyes open, he's got half an ear up, and that's a good start, yes. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:30
This pinky is firmly on the road to recovery, | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
and Cynthia's confident he'll pull though. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
We've called him Mark now. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:40
We've actually done...given him a name, which I'm a little bit sceptical about doing to start with, | 0:09:40 | 0:09:46
because if you name them too soon I'm always scared they mightn't make it, | 0:09:46 | 0:09:50
but he's doing all the right things at the moment. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:55
He has taken to the bottle beautifully, haven't you? | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
You're doing very well, aren't you? | 0:09:58 | 0:10:01
Big wide eyes these days! You're watching what's going on, eh? | 0:10:01 | 0:10:06
It's lovely to see their eyes open. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
They just feel a little bit more... | 0:10:10 | 0:10:11
Well, human's not the word, | 0:10:11 | 0:10:13
but you really feel you have got something that is a real baby. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17
Come on, that's a good boy. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:21
Back to sleep for another hour or two, then we'll have another go. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:25
Good boy. | 0:10:25 | 0:10:26
Back at the sanctuary, Brolga is taking Rex and Ruby outside again. | 0:10:41 | 0:10:45
HE CLUCKS | 0:10:45 | 0:10:47
Their hopping is slowly improving, | 0:10:47 | 0:10:49
so now it's time for the second stage of their training... | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
..learning how to stick together. | 0:10:54 | 0:10:56
It's important for them now | 0:11:00 | 0:11:02
that they follow each other when they go for a hop. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:06
A little joey left by himself is extremely vulnerable. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
You can see it in his body language, | 0:11:10 | 0:11:13
he's sort of looking around, all frightened, his ears are right up. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
That really stresses the little joey. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:20
So what I'm trying to do now, is trying to get the babies to start following one another, | 0:11:22 | 0:11:28
or following me, because a little joey would be following its mother. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:32
Mummy's girl Ruby is quick to follow Brolga... | 0:11:40 | 0:11:43
..unlike Rex, who's doing his own thing. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
HE CLUCKS | 0:11:50 | 0:11:52
Rex, Rexy! | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
HE CLUCKS | 0:11:55 | 0:11:56
Come on. | 0:11:58 | 0:11:59
-HE CLUCKS -Come on. | 0:11:59 | 0:12:01
Time for Brolga to give reluctant Rex a pep talk. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:08
When I walk away, you're supposed to follow your mum. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:13
OK, come on, look, follow me. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:15
Come on, come on... | 0:12:15 | 0:12:16
-Come on! -HE CLUCKS | 0:12:17 | 0:12:19
Come on! | 0:12:19 | 0:12:20
Come on, good boy. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
Finally, Rex gets the right idea. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:25
And soon the joeys even start following each other. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:43
Mission accomplished. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:46
I think they're going to make a great little team, Ruby and Rex. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:50
-HE CLUCKS -Come on! | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
Each year around 200 orphaned kangaroos are rescued from the roadsides around Alice Springs. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:06
The hope is that all the joeys will eventually leave the homes and backyards they've been raised in, | 0:13:10 | 0:13:16
and be released. | 0:13:16 | 0:13:17
But training them to survive in the outside world takes time. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:22
They go from being in a bag to being outside | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
to having other kangaroos with them so they learn to associate with kangaroos, | 0:13:27 | 0:13:31
and some take longer than others, and it's a bit like children. | 0:13:31 | 0:13:35
I had one of mine couldn't get out the door fast enough when he was 17, | 0:13:35 | 0:13:39
and I had to kick one out at 37, so they're a little bit the same. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:42
Some do take longer than others, but eventually they all go. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:46
The journey from backyard to outback is a tough one. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
Raised by human foster parents, the joeys lose some of their wild instincts. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:57
So before being released, they have to enrol in kangaroo boot camp. | 0:13:58 | 0:14:04
Three to four months in this holding pen with only kangaroos for company | 0:14:11 | 0:14:16
is enough to break the ties they've formed with humans. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
We just keep an eye on them, and make sure they're all right, but otherwise no love. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:26
And slowly, over the weeks, | 0:14:27 | 0:14:29
those orphan joeys that were raised in people's homes | 0:14:29 | 0:14:34
become a wild animal. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:36
The holding pen has covered sides to stop the prying eyes of predators, | 0:14:38 | 0:14:43
like dingoes and feral dogs. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:46
Left to themselves, the roos grow wilder, | 0:14:47 | 0:14:50
and form bonds which will be vital when they're released as a group. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:54
Today, Brolga and Cynthia are on their way to the pen | 0:14:58 | 0:15:02
to collect five older kangaroos that are ready to be returned to the wild. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:07
How we know that they're ready is one day we go into the enclosure, | 0:15:09 | 0:15:14
and as long as all the kangaroos run away from us, | 0:15:14 | 0:15:17
the same people that raised them when they were orphans, | 0:15:17 | 0:15:21
we now see fear in them, that they're seeing a person... | 0:15:21 | 0:15:24
that's when we know they're ready. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:26
We've got to now catch them, and that's the hard part. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:40
We go in with big nets and it's a bit like catching a butterfly that weighs 20 kilos. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:47
Now this animal is like a wild kangaroo being chased by a predator, | 0:15:49 | 0:15:54
so they're going to try to run round you like someone playing football. | 0:15:54 | 0:15:57
She's coming back! | 0:16:01 | 0:16:03
She was coming back! | 0:16:04 | 0:16:06
Here we go, three in one. | 0:16:06 | 0:16:08
You push them down here, Cynthia. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:17
I'm a-trying! | 0:16:17 | 0:16:18
I've got to be really careful because that kangaroo can jump two metres high, | 0:16:23 | 0:16:28
and it can almost take you with it. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:29
Come on, mate. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:35
Some of the roos are reluctant, but experts Brolga and Cynthia know exactly how to handle them safely. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:41
Settle down, settle down. | 0:16:41 | 0:16:43
One down, four to go. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:49
I did it, I did it, I did it! | 0:16:55 | 0:16:57
Yippee! | 0:16:58 | 0:16:59
Cynthia's in her 70s. I mean, she's no spring chicken, | 0:16:59 | 0:17:02
but she's got the dedication and the motivation and the will to keep going like someone my age. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:08
Good catch, good catch. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:11
Life in the old girl yet! | 0:17:11 | 0:17:12
Now, I must admit that I don't do too much, I might catch them now and again, | 0:17:14 | 0:17:17
but usually that's Brolga's job these days, but I enjoy it. | 0:17:17 | 0:17:21
I did it, I did it, I did it! | 0:17:21 | 0:17:23
I guess I'll do it till the day I drop. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:26
Two-all! | 0:17:39 | 0:17:40
Ow! Don't try and kick me! | 0:17:41 | 0:17:43
With five kangaroos safely on board, | 0:17:48 | 0:17:50
Brolga and Cynthia head off to release them. | 0:17:50 | 0:17:53
They're travelling to a cattle station about 60 miles outside Alice Springs. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:59
It's an area with ample food and water, | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
giving kangaroos who aren't used | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
to living in the wild | 0:18:05 | 0:18:06
the best possible chance. | 0:18:06 | 0:18:08
TOOT! | 0:18:08 | 0:18:10 | |
MOO! | 0:18:10 | 0:18:11 | |
All right, let's do this, Cynthia. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:17
-Time to rock'n'roll? -Time to rock'n'roll. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:18
There's freedom. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:22
There we are! Oh, look at that, you're on grass. | 0:18:22 | 0:18:26
Come on, mate, you're free now. | 0:18:26 | 0:18:28
Oh, what's that? Birds and grass. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:31
-No fences. -No. | 0:18:31 | 0:18:33
Releasing an animal's an absolutely wonderful experience, | 0:18:33 | 0:18:36
a bit like sending a child off to school for the first time. | 0:18:36 | 0:18:40
There we are. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:45
Every parent's always a little bit apprehensive, | 0:18:45 | 0:18:47
but it's an absolute joy to see the way they bound off. | 0:18:47 | 0:18:50
Whoo, look at him! | 0:18:50 | 0:18:51
It's taken a long time to get back out there, hasn't it? | 0:18:53 | 0:18:55
But you made it. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:56
There we are. | 0:18:57 | 0:18:59
These novice kangaroos are taking their first hops into a strange and potentially frightening new world, | 0:18:59 | 0:19:06
and they must help each other if they're to make it. | 0:19:06 | 0:19:09
-There's a couple there, look. -Oh, look, yes. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:15
-They're sticking together. -Yes. | 0:19:15 | 0:19:17
We've put what, six or eight months into each of these joeys? | 0:19:18 | 0:19:22
Absolutely. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:23
And this is the best part of it for me. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:26
It's never a sad time for me, it's always happy. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:28
-Yes, and you just hope that their second chance at life is really going to be a good second chance. -Yes. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:33
Oh, freedom! Away you go. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
All yours, the whole thousand acres. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
-Million acres. -Million, sorry! | 0:19:40 | 0:19:42
Back at the shack, release is still a long way off for Rex and Ruby. | 0:20:04 | 0:20:08
A week after their first hop in the backyard, | 0:20:10 | 0:20:13
Brolga's newest recruits are on another training exercise. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:18
Adult kangaroos mainly eat grasses and shrubs, | 0:20:20 | 0:20:24
and Rex and Ruby are starting to seek out likely-looking morsels. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28
To break down this difficult-to-digest food, | 0:20:29 | 0:20:32
kangaroos have special bacteria in their gut, | 0:20:32 | 0:20:36
which it's believed youngsters normally get | 0:20:36 | 0:20:39
from contact with their mothers. | 0:20:39 | 0:20:40
Orphans Rex and Ruby don't have that option, | 0:20:40 | 0:20:43
but they've found an alternative source of the bacteria. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:47
He's eating poo. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:50
Adult kangaroo droppings contain bacteria the youngsters need, | 0:20:55 | 0:21:00
and there's plenty left in the yard | 0:21:00 | 0:21:02
by older kangaroos when they come to visit. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:04
Little Rex in particular is picking up kangaroo poo and eating it. | 0:21:07 | 0:21:12
Now this may appear gross to some people, and he doesn't know the science of it, | 0:21:12 | 0:21:18
but it's instinct that he requires it in his diet to help him digest food properly. | 0:21:18 | 0:21:25
And that's not the only instinct Rex is displaying. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
Most kangaroos are social creatures, | 0:21:35 | 0:21:38
and although for now he's stuck in the yard, | 0:21:38 | 0:21:41
that won't stop him making friends out in the sanctuary. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:44
HE CLUCKS | 0:21:52 | 0:21:53
Life's not quite so sociable for Brolga, living alone at the shack... | 0:21:53 | 0:21:58
..but raising orphans like Rex and Ruby makes it all worthwhile. | 0:22:01 | 0:22:05
Looking after the joeys is number one for me. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:12
Although I don't have any luxuries of the developed world, | 0:22:14 | 0:22:18
of a modern lifestyle like a lot of people around the world have... | 0:22:18 | 0:22:21
..to me, I don't need that, | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
cos what you need is love and love will get you through all the time. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:30
Model students Rex and Ruby are making great progress towards the day when they'll be released. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:41
But not all animals are this well-behaved, | 0:22:44 | 0:22:47
as one of Brolga's oldest friends, Anne-Marie Docherty is finding out. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:53
Don't bite...don't bite. | 0:22:56 | 0:22:59
I was going to wash it anyway. | 0:23:04 | 0:23:06
This is Rocky, and he's my little black-footed rock Wallaby, | 0:23:06 | 0:23:11
who has just about outgrown his welcome... | 0:23:11 | 0:23:17
Ow! | 0:23:17 | 0:23:18 | |
Too young to be an adult, too old to be a child, | 0:23:21 | 0:23:25
Rocky's at that difficult age when rules are made to be broken... | 0:23:25 | 0:23:30
Don't! | 0:23:30 | 0:23:31
Don't! | 0:23:32 | 0:23:33
Rocky is a teenager. | 0:23:33 | 0:23:35
You can't leave anything anywhere. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:37
He chewed the aerial off my stereo, so I can't listen to my radio inside now. | 0:23:37 | 0:23:42
He'll drink my coffee. | 0:23:43 | 0:23:45
There's usually lava lamps and other photos around and he's managed to knock them all down. | 0:23:45 | 0:23:53
He's broke some of my cow collection, he's broken that. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
He jumps up on the cupboards, he's on the fish tanks... | 0:23:56 | 0:24:00
I've had to put a book on my other fish tank because he jumped on it one night, | 0:24:00 | 0:24:03
and he landed straight in the fish tank. | 0:24:03 | 0:24:05
He's left his little trademark here, | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
we have a nugget. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
Yes, he's becoming a little terror. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:14
As much as I love him, I don't think he's really who he should be, | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
because he's here in this environment, you know. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:24
He's really not where he should be. | 0:24:24 | 0:24:26
In the wild, rock wallabies live in steep, rocky terrain. | 0:24:30 | 0:24:34
Like kangaroos, they raise their young in a pouch, | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
but they're smaller, about the size of a cat. | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
Rock wallabies are very agile, | 0:24:41 | 0:24:43
able to leap long distances and cling on to precarious ledges, | 0:24:43 | 0:24:48
ideal if you live in the mountains... | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
Stop being silly! | 0:24:51 | 0:24:53
..Frustrating if you live in a bungalow. | 0:24:53 | 0:24:55
I think he really has grown out of being Anne-Marie's wallaby, haven't you, Rocky, eh? | 0:24:58 | 0:25:06
I can't keep him any longer. | 0:25:08 | 0:25:10
I'm going to have to get some help with this one, | 0:25:10 | 0:25:13
and I think Brolga's going to be the one to help me out here. | 0:25:13 | 0:25:16
Anne-Marie and Brolga have been friends for years, | 0:25:18 | 0:25:21
working together to rescue and protect wildlife whenever it's in danger. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:26
In the past, Anne-Marie has helped Brolga when he's taken on too much, | 0:25:30 | 0:25:35
and now she's hoping he'll return the favour. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:38
Anne-Marie is... gee, she's a character. | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
She is the most loving person I've met in a long time, | 0:25:43 | 0:25:48
and her heart is in those kangaroos, | 0:25:48 | 0:25:52
and any orphaned wildlife that comes in, she gives it 250 per cent. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:56
So I've got nothing but admiration for Anne-Marie. | 0:25:56 | 0:26:01
To see if they'll get on, Anne-Marie wants to introduce Rocky to Brolga. | 0:26:08 | 0:26:13
Yeah, well, this is Rocky, Brolga. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:15
..But Rocky has other ideas. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:18
Rocky! | 0:26:18 | 0:26:19
Rocky! | 0:26:20 | 0:26:21
Come on, quick! Good boy, good boy, you ready? | 0:26:21 | 0:26:25
OK. | 0:26:25 | 0:26:27 | |
Up, up, up! | 0:26:28 | 0:26:29
Over here, come on. Up here on mummy's sh... All right. | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
-Oh, Jeez! -Come on! -Wow, he's unreal. | 0:26:32 | 0:26:35
-He's a terror, isn't he? -Oh, yeah. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:39
How do you keep control of him? | 0:26:39 | 0:26:41
Well, basically, I don't! | 0:26:41 | 0:26:43
You can't! | 0:26:43 | 0:26:45
He's just non-stop. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:47
He's a most remarkable animal. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:49
He obviously likes the mirror, like a lot of teenage boys, they like the mirror too. | 0:26:51 | 0:26:55
He looks great, he's in perfect condition, and he's got such character. | 0:26:55 | 0:27:00
Hey, ooh, Jesus, Rocky! | 0:27:00 | 0:27:02
Here, come on, up you get, quick. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:05
Come on, no, you don't want to. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:06
He's a character! I love him. Hey! | 0:27:08 | 0:27:10
You can't but not love him, honestly. | 0:27:10 | 0:27:13
Are you going to bite? No, no. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:15
Oh, you are beautiful. | 0:27:15 | 0:27:17
I would love to look after him. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:23
-Oh, that would be amazing. -I'll take him on, for sure. | 0:27:23 | 0:27:26
Oh, I was keeping my fingers crossed, believe me, because I was at my wits' end. | 0:27:26 | 0:27:32
They've hit it off, and Brolga's got a plan to keep Rocky out of trouble in the future. | 0:27:32 | 0:27:38
I think it's now time for him to be jumping over rocks and boulders, not beds and pillows. | 0:27:38 | 0:27:47
So I'll make a rockery, almost like Rocky's little mountain. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:53
Oh, that would be great. | 0:27:53 | 0:27:54
I love him already. | 0:27:58 | 0:28:00
He will keep you entertained, believe me. | 0:28:00 | 0:28:03
-I reckon he will. -Yeah. | 0:28:03 | 0:28:04
Next time, rocks... | 0:28:05 | 0:28:07
and roll. | 0:28:07 | 0:28:09
Brolga moves a mountain for his latest orphan. | 0:28:09 | 0:28:12
-Not bad, eh? -Wow! | 0:28:12 | 0:28:15
There's drama at dinner time... | 0:28:15 | 0:28:18
Little Ruby's taken the milk down the wrong way, | 0:28:18 | 0:28:20
which is a big problem. | 0:28:20 | 0:28:22
And Rocky moves in to his new home. | 0:28:22 | 0:28:25
He's like a kid in a playground. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:27
You can almost see his little mouth smiling. | 0:28:27 | 0:28:29
