Cardiff Bay is the most culturally diverse area in Wales. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
It was a perfect location for It's My Shout to base their film, Stone Soup. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
It was filmed in Grangetown, Butetown and Riverside | 0:00:08 | 0:00:12
and the BBC Drama Studios. | 0:00:12 | 0:00:13
Ex-Welsh international footballer Nathan Blake has helped | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
It's My Shout find talent in the area. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:21
There are 19 nationalities involved in the film | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
and he went to meet some of the crew to see why the sense of community | 0:00:26 | 0:00:29
in the Bay is still so strong. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:32
I love our community because I think they're so integrated | 0:00:32 | 0:00:35
and everyone's always looking after each other. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
Everyone's, you know, I think people say, you know, everyone's | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
always up in everyone's business but I don't think that's the case. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
I think it's... Everyone's really helpful, friendly. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
It's a lovely community, yeah. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:47
Stone Soup, in a sense, | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
celebrates the strength of the community in Cardiff Bay. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
Community is very important. I think it brings everyone together. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
Sometimes you don't know the people in your community | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
and I think if you work with the community, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
meet your community, you get to know your community and everyone | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
knows each other and you could help each other out, I suppose. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:08
Lead actor Anthony Corria works at the Roath Lock Studios | 0:01:08 | 0:01:11
and has lived in the Bay for most of his life. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
He sees similarities between his own community and the climax of the film. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:19
And it becomes a celebration of basically neighbours | 0:01:19 | 0:01:26
coming to celebrate one thing that's being created for them | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
all to become closer | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
and appreciate and respect each other. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
The It's My Shout team held workshops in the area for two months. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:40
More than 100 people turned up for a pilot episode. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
They then had to be cast in roles as supporting actors or in | 0:01:44 | 0:01:48
important jobs behind the camera, where they would receive tuition. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
Nathan spoke to a trainee runner, | 0:01:53 | 0:01:54
who had been there throughout this process. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
I'm Zimbabwean-born, but I was Welsh-raised. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
I came to the country about, yeah, about 15 years ago. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
I am involved with the community. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:09
But this project has kind of, in a way, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
ripped out the middleman and it's just... | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
Galvanised what you want to do. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:15
Yeah, and it's just like boom! I'm straight in there today. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
I've learned so much since this whole programme started. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:24
-Mmm. -I've met directors, I've met actors, actresses. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:28
-I feel like I want it even more now. -Even more, yeah, yeah, yeah. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
-I feel like I want even more. -You can taste it. -Yeah. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
I can smell it. | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
It's My Shout also went out to some local events, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
like the Grangetown fete. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
This is where they found their leading actress. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:43
-How have you enjoyed your experience so far? -Really, really good. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
-I love it. -Yeah? -It's amazing. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
-So is this the first time you've ever acted? -Yeah. | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
Yeah? | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02 | |
-And how old's young Aaliyah? -Oh, 12. -Yeah? -Just turned 12. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
And does she harbour ambitions to be an actress? | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
She'd never really thought about it, but is always doing movie stars | 0:03:16 | 0:03:22
and videos on her iPad, and just absolutely loves the camera. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
-Just a typical teenager. -Yeah. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
And how did you get involved with It's My Shout? | 0:03:33 | 0:03:36
Um, I was in the fete doing my karate demonstration to raise | 0:03:36 | 0:03:40
money to go to places around the world. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
-She does karate for Karate Wales... -OK. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
-..and travels round doing international competitions. -OK. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:48
So she's used to being under pressure. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
And Naiomi saw me doing it and she asked my mum if I liked drama. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:56
-M'hm. -And she said, "Come to the auditions on Friday". | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
So then I went and that's how I got the part. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:01
And the rest is history! | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
After making Stone Soup, | 0:04:04 | 0:04:05
the Bay community are eager to build on their film-making experience. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:10 |
