Hello, or should I say s'mae? Today, the show comes to you from

0:00:040:00:08

the Welsh capital, Cardiff, and I'm at the Principality Stadium,

0:00:080:00:11

home of the national sport, rugby. And, believe it or not,

0:00:110:00:14

there's quite a few similarities with Bargain Hunt.

0:00:140:00:18

Sometimes, shopping can turn into a bit of a scrum.

0:00:180:00:21

It gets tough for our teams,

0:00:230:00:24

and sometimes, they need a bit of a lift.

0:00:240:00:27

Whee! SHE GIGGLES

0:00:270:00:28

And some teams like to tackle the shopping head on.

0:00:280:00:32

So, there you have it. Let's get the game underway.

0:00:320:00:34

It's time to kick things off. Let's go Bargain Hunting.

0:00:340:00:37

Today, our teams are shopping at Jacob's Market here in Cardiff.

0:01:050:01:08

The usual rules apply - they have £300 to bag

0:01:080:01:11

themselves three bargains in only 60 minutes.

0:01:110:01:14

I couldn't have put it better myself. Right, I'm off to find

0:01:150:01:18

our teams, while you have a little look at what's coming up.

0:01:180:01:21

The Reds are looking for other ways to make some money.

0:01:220:01:25

Actually, you might make a few quid from busking, possibly.

0:01:290:01:33

And the Blues follow their psychic intuition.

0:01:330:01:36

-What can you feel?

-Something's gravitating myself to it.

0:01:360:01:39

-Really? Are you?

-I'm just not sure what.

0:01:390:01:41

Well, we'd better follow you, then, hadn't we?

0:01:410:01:44

But, there's no predicting who'll win today's show.

0:01:440:01:47

Oh, he's claimed it.

0:01:470:01:48

-Is that good?

-No.

0:01:490:01:50

But that's all for later. Today, on Bargain Hunt, we have two

0:01:520:01:55

teams of very best friends. For the Reds, we have John and Lee,

0:01:550:01:58

and for the Blues, we have Samuel and Theo. Hello, teams.

0:01:580:02:01

-ALL:

-Hello!

0:02:010:02:03

My goodness. Right, so, Red Team. John, tell me how you two met.

0:02:030:02:06

We met when we were about seven years old, at a family wedding...

0:02:060:02:10

-Mm-hm.

-..and sort of bonded over a mutual interest in model trains.

0:02:100:02:14

-And you've been friends ever since?

-Yes, very best friends. We do

0:02:140:02:17

everything together these days. We go out, a lot of climbing,

0:02:170:02:21

and then reward ourselves with a pint afterwards.

0:02:210:02:23

But I believe you're also quite musical, is that right?

0:02:230:02:26

Yeah, I've been in several bands. I play a wide array of

0:02:260:02:28

instruments, pretty much any instrument, jack of all trades.

0:02:280:02:31

-Any instrument?

-Yeah.

-That sounds very talented.

0:02:310:02:33

So you can just pick up anything?

0:02:330:02:35

-Yeah, I can make a noise out of anything.

-Oh, really?

0:02:350:02:37

SHE CHUCKLES And you are a teacher as well?

0:02:370:02:40

In my spare time, yes. I'll do workshops, teaching younger

0:02:400:02:43

children how to play instruments, just to get them into music

0:02:430:02:46

initially, so there's a lot of banging, a lot of horrible noises,

0:02:460:02:51

-but it's good to see them.

-They've got to start somewhere.

0:02:510:02:54

Yeah. They get started, and you see them enjoying it,

0:02:540:02:56

-and it's all worth it.

-So, Lee,

0:02:560:02:57

you're also interested in the great outdoors.

0:02:570:03:00

I am, yes. I get outdoors whenever possible. I've got two

0:03:000:03:04

Jack Russells, which do keep me outdoor, come rain or shine.

0:03:040:03:08

-You're also a boxer?

-Yeah, I've done a couple of charity events, a couple

0:03:080:03:13

-just for fun, but...

-For fun?

-Yeah, just for a bit of fun.

-Really?

0:03:130:03:16

It's a bit of a stress release, definite release, after work.

0:03:160:03:19

-Exactly. So, what do you do for work?

-I'm a neighbourhood assistant

0:03:190:03:23

for a local housing association, with disabled people and the

0:03:230:03:26

elderly, enabling and empowering them to have a

0:03:260:03:29

-better quality of life, really.

-Oh, fantastic. That sounds very

0:03:290:03:32

-rewarding.

-It is very rewarding.

0:03:320:03:33

Well, it's going to be an interesting one today.

0:03:330:03:35

What's your plan? Who's in charge?

0:03:350:03:37

-It's going to be a team effort.

-Team effort.

-I think

0:03:370:03:39

we're going to use a logical, progressive something.

0:03:390:03:43

-Gut instinct.

-Gut instinct, yeah, let's go with gut instinct.

0:03:430:03:46

Logical and progressive, wow. Very, very best of luck.

0:03:460:03:49

I'm sure you'll be wonderful.

0:03:490:03:50

So now my Blues, Samuel and Theo.

0:03:500:03:52

Tell me, Samuel, how you and Theo met.

0:03:520:03:56

-Well, Theo used to be my boss, actually.

-Oh.

-We used to work

0:03:560:03:59

-at a dental practice together.

-Right. Show us your teeth.

0:03:590:04:02

Very pearly. Like it. OK, yeah. Were you a dentist? What were you doing?

0:04:020:04:06

I was in marketing, actually.

0:04:060:04:08

Dentists don't have the best branding, really.

0:04:080:04:11

We want to make the dentist's a more approachable place to be.

0:04:110:04:14

-And Theo employed you?

-Yeah, and what great friends we've become now.

0:04:140:04:20

Exactly. Are you still working together?

0:04:200:04:22

Not any more. Theo's no longer with the company.

0:04:220:04:24

He's moved on to other ventures.

0:04:240:04:26

Yeah, I've recently set up a new venture, business venture,

0:04:260:04:30

-specialising in marketing.

-Oh, fantastic.

-So, hopefully

0:04:300:04:33

-we'll still be working together, maybe, in the future.

-In the future.

0:04:330:04:36

So, tell me, Samuel, when you're not doing your marketing,

0:04:360:04:39

what do you like doing?

0:04:390:04:41

-I'm a huge karaoke fan.

-Oh, really?

-Anyone who knows me knows me

0:04:410:04:45

-as the one who does karaoke.

-Really?

-My evenings, my weekends.

0:04:450:04:49

-I have a karaoke machine at home.

-Oh, really?

-Mm-hm. I just love it.

0:04:490:04:52

So, obviously Samuel likes the limelight, Theo. You do as

0:04:520:04:55

-well, I believe.

-Yeah, I've had my moments. I've entered the

0:04:550:04:59

Mr Wales competition - I got placed fourth.

0:04:590:05:01

But you're also Mr Swimsuit. Is that right? What did you win?

0:05:010:05:05

Mr Swimsuit and Mr Best Hair, I've got here.

0:05:050:05:08

There was multiple rounds during the competition.

0:05:080:05:11

-I won Best Swimsuit round and Best Hair.

-Oh, my goodness.

0:05:110:05:16

So, yeah, this hair was the best hair in Wales.

0:05:160:05:18

SHE CHEERS Well, I'm very proud to have met it.

0:05:180:05:21

Fantastic. So, what's your plan for today?

0:05:230:05:26

-I think our plan is to go in looking for things with a Welsh theme.

-OK.

0:05:260:05:31

Hopefully, pull at the heartstrings of the people at the auction.

0:05:310:05:35

Brilliant. So what do you need do go shopping, guys?

0:05:350:05:37

-ALL:

-Money.

-Money, exactly.

0:05:370:05:39

-So, here we are.

-Thank you.

-£300 for you. Samuel took that one quickly.

0:05:390:05:43

-Now, who wants the money over here?

-I'll hold on to that, I think.

0:05:430:05:46

-There we go, Lee.

-Thank you.

-£300.

0:05:460:05:47

Now, your experts await. Now, off you go. Enjoy, teams.

0:05:470:05:52

Could be a bit of a hair-raising experience today.

0:05:520:05:55

Today's teams will, of course,

0:05:550:05:57

need a couple of experts to help them out.

0:05:570:06:00

'Ello, 'ello, 'ello. Richard Madeley will be teamed up with the Reds.

0:06:000:06:04

And, hoping to cash in for the Blues, it's Caroline Hawley.

0:06:050:06:09

So, Samuel, Theo, what are you looking for today?

0:06:110:06:14

-Well, I'm looking for the golden gavel.

-Oh, are you?

0:06:140:06:17

No pressure, then.

0:06:170:06:19

Anything sort of scientific, like microscopes,

0:06:190:06:21

anything like that, really.

0:06:210:06:22

I'm looking for something that could go in someone's

0:06:220:06:25

living room, that they'll see at the auction and go,

0:06:250:06:27

"I want that in my living room, and I'll pay whatever for it."

0:06:270:06:29

Anything with a bit of character,

0:06:290:06:31

something that I think on the day will make a bit of money.

0:06:310:06:33

PHONE RINGS

0:06:330:06:35

What's that? 60 minutes? Teams, your time starts now.

0:06:350:06:40

-WHISTLE SOUNDS

-Let's go.

0:06:400:06:42

Great, characterful and scientific. Come with me.

0:06:420:06:45

Good luck, lads.

0:06:450:06:47

So does it take you long to do your hair?

0:06:470:06:49

I can get dressed ready in the morning within half-hour.

0:06:500:06:53

-If I want it perfect, then I need to put some effort into it.

-Yeah?

0:06:530:06:58

Hopefully, you and your famous hair can cut it today, eh, Theo?

0:06:580:07:02

Right, Reds, spotted anything?

0:07:020:07:04

-The drum kit for John.

-RICHARD LAUGHS

0:07:040:07:07

I think that's a good start.

0:07:070:07:09

-It's a beautiful kit.

-Is it?

0:07:090:07:11

You did tell us earlier, John,

0:07:110:07:12

that you could make a noise from anything.

0:07:120:07:14

It's only £400.

0:07:140:07:16

Bargain(!) Although it is £100 over your entire budget.

0:07:160:07:19

How much?

0:07:190:07:20

-400.

-We are not worried about the price, are we?

0:07:200:07:23

For just one afternoon only, live from Cardiff,

0:07:230:07:28

I give you the man from Swansea, the man, the drums himself,

0:07:280:07:32

it is... John.

0:07:320:07:34

HE PLAYS BEAT

0:07:340:07:38

We are off to a flying start there.

0:07:430:07:45

If it helps, I cleared the dust from it.

0:07:450:07:47

You did indeed.

0:07:470:07:49

Actually, we might make a few quid from busking, possibly.

0:07:490:07:52

You never... In fact, we could make more from doing that

0:07:520:07:55

than buying and selling antiques.

0:07:550:07:57

Bravo, John.

0:07:570:07:59

Although I think it's time to knock that idea on the head

0:07:590:08:02

and get on with the shopping.

0:08:020:08:04

The Blues look like they are in the swing of things.

0:08:040:08:06

Do either of you play golf?

0:08:060:08:08

-Not weekly.

-No?

-But I've taken part in the sport.

0:08:080:08:11

-Are you any good?

-I wouldn't say so.

0:08:110:08:13

-I can't say I'm any good either, but...

-You like the look of this?

0:08:130:08:17

I really like it. I think it's quite a decorative piece as well.

0:08:170:08:20

-Even if you don't play golf.

-What's the price? £80.

0:08:200:08:24

That's quite a hefty price, but I can imagine golf enthusiast might

0:08:240:08:28

quite possibly pay that, I think.

0:08:280:08:30

Grab the golf clubs and we'll go and find the owner of these fine things.

0:08:300:08:34

Come along.

0:08:340:08:36

-Hello.

-Hi.

-Are you the owner of these golf clubs?

0:08:360:08:40

I am, yes. I'll take £15 off it for you.

0:08:400:08:44

Well, there is a bit of damage on it.

0:08:440:08:46

I mean, that's going to have to be repaired by the...

0:08:460:08:49

-Purchaser...

-By the purchaser.

0:08:490:08:52

I'll do another five. So that would make it 60.

0:08:520:08:56

-That's a yes from me, what about you?

-Yes from me.

0:08:560:08:58

-Yes from you.

-Thank you very much.

-Right.

-Lovely, thank you.

0:08:580:09:01

-Thank you.

-Cheers.

-Gosh.

-Good luck with it.

0:09:010:09:03

First purchase done within the first ten minutes.

0:09:030:09:08

-Excellent.

-I feel a golden gavel coming on.

0:09:080:09:11

Right, yes. We are not playing around now, put them down

0:09:110:09:13

and we'll move on. Thank you very much.

0:09:130:09:15

Very good, chaps. You are off to a flying start.

0:09:160:09:19

Hats off to you.

0:09:190:09:20

-I do like the helmet.

-Is it heavy?

-Your size?

0:09:200:09:24

-Just about, I think. Hold on.

-Aw, look at that.

-Very fetching.

0:09:240:09:28

-What do you think?

-Suits you.

-Yeah.

0:09:280:09:31

Should we put that back? OK.

0:09:310:09:32

-We'll keep that on the list.

-We'll put that on the back burner.

0:09:320:09:35

It's the first thing we had a look at after the drum kit.

0:09:350:09:38

I was actually just going to pick up a little bit of

0:09:380:09:41

Welsh mining memorabilia that I saw beside the helmet.

0:09:410:09:48

This commemorates the miners' strike, 1984 to 1985.

0:09:480:09:51

It's a miner's lamp. In collectors' terms,

0:09:510:09:54

this would be a better bet for you than your helmet.

0:09:540:09:57

We know where they are. We've only just started.

0:09:570:10:00

We'll put them back and keep searching, shall we?

0:10:000:10:02

-Let's look some more.

-Good.

0:10:020:10:04

Hmm. Very decisive, team.

0:10:040:10:06

Tea services, they are coming back into fashion now.

0:10:080:10:11

People are starting to use them again.

0:10:110:10:13

I don't know about you. You are not convinced. No?

0:10:130:10:16

-I love tea.

-Do you?

-Mm.

0:10:160:10:18

Do you have it out of a mug or a little delicate tea set?

0:10:180:10:21

-Or a bit of both?

-I can't say I have a delicate little tea set.

0:10:210:10:24

-No, you see... Hmm.

-I can see the appeal.

-Definitely.

0:10:240:10:27

-Whatever the style of it...

-Well, there is 11 of them.

0:10:270:10:31

That would have originally been a 12-place setting.

0:10:310:10:34

But, I mean, I just think it's so cheap. £40.

0:10:340:10:37

It's not a lot, is it?

0:10:370:10:39

-No, it's not. Shall we bank it and...?

-Exactly, yes.

0:10:390:10:42

OK, well, something for the back burner then, Blues.

0:10:430:10:46

But keep in mind that you are almost

0:10:460:10:48

a quarter of the way through your shop.

0:10:480:10:50

Oops. Look out. It's another find for John.

0:10:500:10:52

There is a trumpet. And I think it's a bugle, is it, without the keys?

0:10:520:10:57

-Yeah.

-It's made of metal.

-It is.

0:10:570:11:01

-Scottish.

-Scottish?

0:11:010:11:03

I think that's definitely got a bit of character to it.

0:11:030:11:06

I do have my doubts about this piece.

0:11:060:11:09

If we could just have a look at the quality on this particular

0:11:090:11:12

-badge here...

-It's not very good, is it?

0:11:120:11:15

Correct. It's not very good.

0:11:150:11:17

I've got a feeling it's a fake.

0:11:170:11:19

-Right, OK.

-But before we put it back, could we just see,

0:11:190:11:22

-does it work?

-Can we get a tune out of it?

-Does it work?

0:11:220:11:25

Well, you did say you could play anything, John.

0:11:250:11:27

TUNELESS NOTE

0:11:270:11:30

Definitely a fake.

0:11:300:11:32

Right. Well, how about the real trumpet next to it?

0:11:320:11:36

You'll get a sound out of that, won't you?

0:11:360:11:38

This looks old, doesn't it?

0:11:380:11:40

It's only 125.

0:11:400:11:42

I think we can bring that down, certainly.

0:11:420:11:45

It's been up there a while.

0:11:450:11:46

-This is a trumpet of the vintage, isn't it?

-Yes.

0:11:460:11:49

I'd imagine this dates from the middle part of the last century.

0:11:490:11:53

-That's not a good...

-It's just needs to be greased, it's fine.

0:11:530:11:56

-It just needs to be greased?

-Yeah.

-Shall we try it for sound?

0:11:560:11:59

Is that something that we could also do?

0:11:590:12:02

HE PLAYS NOTES

0:12:020:12:06

Yeah, nice finish.

0:12:080:12:09

Let's get down to business. It's got a price tag which, I must confess,

0:12:090:12:13

it's slightly eye-watering to me.

0:12:130:12:14

-If we could get it for £60, do you think it's worth me asking?

-100%.

0:12:140:12:19

-Certainly, yeah.

-Oh, hello.

-Hello.

0:12:190:12:22

-You are the owner of the trumpet, I'm assuming?

-I am indeed.

0:12:220:12:26

-We were wondering if you would consider an offer of £60 for it?

-No.

0:12:260:12:31

-You wouldn't consider an offer of £60?

-I might take 65.

-Uh-huh.

0:12:310:12:35

-Right.

-63.

0:12:350:12:37

-Oh.

-Can you take your cap off?

0:12:370:12:40

Exactly, where are your manners, Lee?

0:12:400:12:43

I can. For £63, I'll take my cap off.

0:12:430:12:48

Thank you. 63.

0:12:480:12:50

63. Excellent.

0:12:500:12:52

Thank you very much.

0:12:520:12:54

THEY LAUGH

0:12:540:12:56

Hats off, team. Well done. That's numero uno for you...

0:12:560:13:00

20 minutes into your shop.

0:13:000:13:02

-What about this?

-Oh.

-The car?

-It's got a certain charm to it.

-It does.

0:13:020:13:07

-Ford.

-1600 Super Ford.

0:13:070:13:09

-Bad news.

-200.

0:13:090:13:11

-Again, something we can bank and come back to.

-Come on then.

0:13:110:13:14

Whilst the Blues motor on, the Reds are still stuck at the same stall.

0:13:140:13:19

I was just having a look at your train. Hard to date it.

0:13:190:13:24

Could date from the middle of the 20th, so it could be 1920s or 1930s.

0:13:240:13:28

Do you know anything about it?

0:13:280:13:30

I think it's a bit older than probably '30s. It's handmade.

0:13:300:13:34

-Yeah.

-Are you interested in that train?

0:13:340:13:36

Cos I'd really like to get rid of it.

0:13:360:13:39

Sounds promising, chaps.

0:13:390:13:40

Well, I am interested in that train, personally.

0:13:400:13:43

-But I don't want to influence the boys.

-Could I take a look at it?

0:13:430:13:46

-Yes.

-Yeah.

-JOHN:

-So how much do you think you'd take for it?

0:13:460:13:49

The asking price is £40.

0:13:490:13:51

-STALLHOLDER:

-Probably ten.

0:13:510:13:53

What about if I take the hat off again?

0:13:530:13:56

Five. Oh, we're down five.

0:13:560:13:58

-I'd do five with the hat off.

-Take the hat off.

0:13:580:14:01

-JOHN:

-Allow me.

0:14:010:14:02

Here it is. The hat is off again.

0:14:020:14:04

-For

-£5. Well, I think really, at £5, you can't go wrong.

0:14:040:14:08

-It's a very kind and generous gesture.

-Give it a clean.

0:14:080:14:11

I'll give it a wash for £5, no problem.

0:14:110:14:14

THEY LAUGH

0:14:140:14:16

Brilliant. Hat's back on. A fiver. Sold.

0:14:160:14:19

Thank you very much indeed.

0:14:190:14:20

We're 2-0 up and just one more to go. Come on then.

0:14:200:14:24

So, they've capped it off. Another deal done.

0:14:240:14:27

You boys are getting the hang of this.

0:14:270:14:30

Up the Reds!

0:14:300:14:31

Well, I think you've got yourself a bit of a fan there, chaps.

0:14:330:14:36

Right, back to the Blues. Now, what's the plan?

0:14:360:14:38

So what do you think, guys?

0:14:380:14:40

You could not get more Welsh than this Welsh national costume.

0:14:400:14:44

True to our tactics, I think...

0:14:440:14:45

We have to get something Welsh, don't we? We've said it now.

0:14:450:14:48

You have said it, yes.

0:14:480:14:50

-You need to be men of your word.

-We do.

-How much is it?

0:14:500:14:53

-I think it's only £14.

-Oh, my goodness. £14.

0:14:530:14:56

Well, you tell me. You two are from Wales, is that a good price?

0:14:560:15:00

It sounds cheap to me.

0:15:000:15:01

-It sounds like good value.

-Shall I go and find a price then?

0:15:010:15:04

-That would be great. That would be great.

-OK, I'll be one second.

0:15:040:15:07

Hang on.

0:15:070:15:08

I wonder if Caroline can get a heavenly price for our Blues.

0:15:080:15:13

What do you think?

0:15:130:15:14

-£10.

-Yes, you're right.

0:15:140:15:17

Crikey, you don't hang around, Caroline!

0:15:170:15:19

-I think it's worth getting.

-Shall we buy it?

-We'll do it?

0:15:190:15:22

-I think we should. What do you think?

-Yeah, absolutely. £10.

0:15:220:15:25

-It's a deal?

-It's a deal.

-Brilliant, excellent.

0:15:250:15:28

-Two items bought at about half an hour into the shop.

-Yep.

0:15:280:15:31

-Excellent.

-Come on, let's have it.

-Come on.

0:15:310:15:34

Come on, guys. Let's go.

0:15:340:15:36

Well done, boys, that's two for you.

0:15:360:15:39

So both teams are now looking for that final piece.

0:15:390:15:41

Now, let's leave them shopping as it's time for

0:15:410:15:44

me to brush up on a piece of family history.

0:15:440:15:46

Sometimes in my job, I do feel a little bit like a detective,

0:15:530:15:56

piecing together a historical jigsaw puzzle.

0:15:560:15:59

And this hair brush here is a great illustration of that.

0:15:590:16:02

On the face of it, it is a fairly innocuous piece.

0:16:020:16:04

It's obviously a hair brush from a larger dressing table set.

0:16:040:16:07

And it would have graced the table of

0:16:070:16:09

a very fashionable lady at the turn of the 20th century.

0:16:090:16:12

We know it's Chinese at first glance because, if you look

0:16:120:16:16

at the dragon here, if you look at his toes, he's got four toes.

0:16:160:16:20

As a general rule of thumb, Japanese dragons are usually three-clawed.

0:16:200:16:23

We've got four.

0:16:230:16:24

The marks on the side, just here,

0:16:240:16:26

confirm that it is indeed a piece of Chinese silver.

0:16:260:16:29

Probably made in Hong Kong in around 1900, just the turn of the century.

0:16:290:16:33

And made for the Western market.

0:16:330:16:35

These pieces were the height of fashion at the time.

0:16:350:16:39

So, all in all, an interesting piece. Full of symbolism.

0:16:390:16:42

But this is the point where we cross the line into evaluating this

0:16:420:16:45

as an antique, and the history and story behind it.

0:16:450:16:48

You see, this piece is engraved in the middle here. Sybil.

0:16:480:16:51

Now, Sybil was my great-grandmother,

0:16:510:16:53

and I've only recently discovered Sybil's story.

0:16:530:16:57

Sybil was born in 1889 and she lived in Kensington, in London.

0:16:570:17:01

In 1908, at the age of only 19,

0:17:010:17:03

she met and married my great-grandfather.

0:17:030:17:06

And I believe that it was probably about this time that she was

0:17:060:17:09

given this brush.

0:17:090:17:10

Maybe as a birthday or a wedding present, possibly.

0:17:100:17:12

Now, my great-grandfather was a ship's chandlery,

0:17:120:17:15

which involved the buying and selling of nautical items.

0:17:150:17:18

The year after their marriage, the young couple travelled out to

0:17:180:17:22

Ceylon, or Sri Lanka as it is now known, for his work.

0:17:220:17:25

It was as the young couple were about to embark on their voyage that

0:17:250:17:28

Sybil discovered that she was with child.

0:17:280:17:30

They arrived in Colombo and my grandfather was born in May 1912.

0:17:300:17:35

Sadly, and perhaps all too predictably,

0:17:350:17:38

Sybil developed septicaemia following the birth of the baby,

0:17:380:17:41

and she died in Colombo three weeks later.

0:17:410:17:43

She was only 22.

0:17:430:17:44

It came as a lovely surprise to me when we found this hair brush

0:17:440:17:48

amongst my grandfather's possessions after he passed away.

0:17:480:17:51

The fact that for all of his life,

0:17:510:17:53

he'd kept this hair brush which belonged to the mother that he

0:17:530:17:56

never knew shows that he cherished this very personal item of hers.

0:17:560:18:00

The auctioneer in me is constantly saying engraving devalues the piece.

0:18:000:18:04

But in this instance,

0:18:040:18:05

I'm so glad that Sybil had her name engraved here,

0:18:050:18:08

otherwise we'd never have known who it belonged to.

0:18:080:18:11

It may only be a silver-backed hair brush for everyone else.

0:18:110:18:14

In the current market, realistically worth maybe £60 to £100.

0:18:140:18:18

Not a huge amount.

0:18:180:18:19

But for me, it's the only piece that I have of my great-grandmother,

0:18:190:18:22

and it's absolutely priceless.

0:18:220:18:24

Back to the shop, and 20 minutes left.

0:18:320:18:35

Time for a quick catch up with our experts.

0:18:350:18:38

How are the boys getting on, Caroline?

0:18:380:18:39

Well, they've bought two items in less than half an hour.

0:18:390:18:43

Which is really good.

0:18:430:18:45

But they're not saying a lot, but I know they are thinking a lot.

0:18:450:18:49

And I know for a fact that Theo wants to win.

0:18:490:18:52

Fighting talk. Confident, Richard?

0:18:520:18:54

I love it when they go onto one stand and buy two items

0:18:540:18:57

just like that.

0:18:570:18:59

The train on the floor, that piece will make more

0:18:590:19:02

percentage profit than anything else in the auction.

0:19:020:19:05

That's a bold claim, Richard. Only time will tell.

0:19:050:19:09

Is anything leaping out at you?

0:19:090:19:11

-Nothing leaping.

-No?

-I feel something, though.

-Can you?

0:19:110:19:14

-What can you feel?

-Something is gravitating myself to it.

-Really?

0:19:140:19:18

-I'm just not sure what.

-You are a bit psychic, then, are you?

0:19:180:19:21

-It has been known.

-Has it?

-Yeah, I knew today we were going to win.

0:19:210:19:25

Right. We'd better follow you, then, hadn't we?

0:19:250:19:27

Well, Theo, you might predict a win,

0:19:270:19:30

but you still have one more item to find.

0:19:300:19:33

Is it still leading you the right way?

0:19:330:19:36

Well, there is only one way to go.

0:19:360:19:38

THEY LAUGH

0:19:380:19:40

Hmm. Not sure about those psychic abilities of yours, Theo.

0:19:400:19:44

Now, Reds, remember you were after something scientific and mechanical?

0:19:440:19:48

An early typewriter!

0:19:480:19:50

-I like the look of it.

-Yeah. That must date from the 1920s or '30s,

0:19:500:19:54

doesn't it? Most unusual, I would have thought.

0:19:540:19:58

Now, it's a very specialised area.

0:19:580:20:01

We've got to remember that, that this is a gamble.

0:20:010:20:04

Because whatever the asking price is,

0:20:040:20:06

we are going to be searching hard for two bidders for it.

0:20:060:20:10

-But it's an interesting object.

-What do you think, John?

0:20:100:20:13

-I really like it. I really do.

-Is it worth the risk, though?

0:20:130:20:16

I really like it.

0:20:160:20:18

I've never seen a typewriter coming in from the sides like that.

0:20:180:20:21

-It still has its original ribbon as well.

-Yeah.

-Its ink ribbon.

0:20:210:20:25

-Can we see how much...?

-Sure, see how much it is.

-Yeah?

0:20:250:20:28

Ah, hello there. I was wondering if...

0:20:280:20:32

you could tell us what your friendliest price is on the

0:20:320:20:35

Oliver typewriter.

0:20:350:20:36

The very friendliest would be 95.

0:20:360:20:39

-Ooh.

-£95. This is the high-risk item.

0:20:390:20:43

But it also could give us the high reward.

0:20:430:20:46

Ooof, that would be a gamble, boys!

0:20:460:20:48

Does that not tempt you? Just the way he said that.

0:20:480:20:51

-Like, this is the high-risk...

-RICHARD LAUGHS

0:20:510:20:53

There is safe stuff, but look at this.

0:20:530:20:55

-Let's quickly walk around. We've got ten minutes to go.

-Ten minutes.

0:20:550:20:59

Ten minutes is up and we don't find anything, we are going for that.

0:20:590:21:02

-I'm serious.

-Yeah, yes. 100%.

0:21:020:21:04

Not sure Lee is convinced. I wonder if the feeling is right for this.

0:21:040:21:08

Ooh.

0:21:080:21:11

Very often these are known as grandmother clocks.

0:21:110:21:13

Ooh.

0:21:130:21:15

"Ooh." What does that mean?

0:21:150:21:17

-Does that mean you like?

-It's got quite a charm to it.

0:21:170:21:20

-Smaller. I quite like it.

-1920s, I would say.

0:21:200:21:23

I would think between the Wars. Yes. And the best on it is 120.

0:21:230:21:29

We are up against time, but before I think we commit,

0:21:290:21:32

we revisit the tea set.

0:21:320:21:35

Tea set. Across here, I think.

0:21:350:21:38

So, back to that tea set you saw earlier, Blues.

0:21:400:21:43

Meanwhile, have the Reds made their final decision?

0:21:430:21:46

-The risk is the typewriter.

-I'd like to win.

0:21:460:21:50

If you'd like to win, you probably want to play a safer game, then.

0:21:500:21:54

OK. I'd honestly consider the miner's lamp. For 20 quid,

0:21:540:21:59

I think that holds a lot of sentimental value.

0:21:590:22:01

I trust your judgment more than anything in the world.

0:22:010:22:04

-Thank you, John.

-Aw.

-So...

-How nice.

0:22:040:22:07

Aw, how sweet!

0:22:070:22:08

No, I think you're right. I think we go for the miner's lamp.

0:22:080:22:11

How much can we lose on £20?

0:22:110:22:14

As long as you think it will bring it in,

0:22:140:22:16

-I'm more than happy to go with it.

-I think so.

-Do you want to do it?

0:22:160:22:19

-I think so.

-Yeah, yeah.

-Great, let's go and buy the miner's lamp.

0:22:190:22:21

Decision made then, Reds. Just the deal to be sealed.

0:22:210:22:25

Here they are.

0:22:260:22:28

Now, it jumps out at me because it's a nice Deco shape to it.

0:22:280:22:33

-There is no wear.

-Mm.

0:22:330:22:35

-Or not much wear at all on the gilding round it.

-Mm-hm.

0:22:350:22:39

But, and there is always a but, it's not a full set, by any means.

0:22:390:22:42

So should we see what the very best is on that?

0:22:420:22:45

-Yeah.

-I think the price needs to reflect the incompleteness of it.

0:22:450:22:50

-Let me have a look. Hello.

-Hi.

-Hello.

0:22:500:22:53

May I just ask your very, very best price on this, please?

0:22:530:22:58

-It has to be 35.

-35. And the very, very best on the clock?

0:22:580:23:02

The very death on the clock would be 100.

0:23:020:23:05

There is an expression - when you sell a clock,

0:23:050:23:07

you are married to the thing.

0:23:070:23:08

-I don't think I'm ready to marry yet.

-Are you not? No?

0:23:080:23:11

-I would quite agree, Samuel.

-OK. My mind is made up.

0:23:110:23:14

Go for the tea set.

0:23:140:23:16

-Is it? On the tea set at 35?

-I think so.

-Right, that's a deal.

0:23:160:23:20

-It's done.

-Whoa! Brilliant! Three items in the bag.

-We've done it.

0:23:200:23:25

-Well done, guys. Thank you.

-Thank you very much.

-Thank you very much.

0:23:250:23:30

Well done, Blues. That's you all done.

0:23:300:23:33

Which just leaves our Reds

0:23:330:23:34

with three minutes remaining on the clock.

0:23:340:23:36

Good. Back to where we started.

0:23:360:23:39

The miner's lamp is still here, I'm pleased to say.

0:23:390:23:44

-No negotiation in the price.

-Nope, OK.

-So it's ours.

0:23:440:23:47

-More than happy with that for £20.

-You sure now?

0:23:470:23:49

-We are done?

-I'd say so.

-Third item in the bag.

-All done.

0:23:490:23:52

That's it, teams. Your 60 minutes are up.

0:23:520:23:56

-Let's go then.

-Let's go. All right.

0:23:560:23:58

Let's check out what the Red team bought.

0:23:580:24:01

Hopefully, the trumpet won't blow it for them at the auction.

0:24:010:24:04

It set them back £63.

0:24:040:24:06

They were chuffed with the train after paying only £5.

0:24:060:24:12

And finally, it was the miner's lamp. They settled at £20.

0:24:120:24:16

Speedy Gonzales all-round, wasn't it?

0:24:160:24:19

-Swift shopping, I like it.

-No messing around.

0:24:190:24:22

-No stopping you. And you with the magic hat.

-I know. I know.

0:24:220:24:25

-I think we need some magic hats now.

-Very, very useful, yeah.

0:24:250:24:28

So what was your favourite item that you bought today?

0:24:280:24:31

I think, for me, it was the trumpet. Definitely.

0:24:310:24:33

Had to be. And what about you, what was your favourite item?

0:24:330:24:36

Definitely the train, because we had it for a fiver,

0:24:360:24:38

and apparently, it's going to make a lot at auction.

0:24:380:24:41

-I hope so.

-Brilliant.

0:24:410:24:42

And I think it's so appropriate for you guys as well,

0:24:420:24:45

having bonded over trains.

0:24:450:24:46

-Yeah.

-I didn't even think of that. That's really good.

0:24:460:24:49

THEY LAUGH

0:24:490:24:52

Brilliant. Well done.

0:24:520:24:53

Do you think the train is going to make you the most profit?

0:24:530:24:56

Hoping so. I mean, at a fiver, what have we got to lose, really?

0:24:560:24:58

-Can't go hugely wrong, can you, for a fiver?

-No. No.

0:24:580:25:01

-So how much did you spend, guys?

-£88.

-£88.

0:25:010:25:03

OK, can I have £212 of leftover lolly then, please?

0:25:030:25:06

There we go. I trust you. I'm sure it's all there.

0:25:060:25:10

-There we go.

-Thank you, Christina.

0:25:100:25:12

£212. What are you going to spend it on?

0:25:120:25:14

Well, these boys came out with a strategy.

0:25:140:25:16

They wanted something scientific or mechanical,

0:25:160:25:19

and we didn't get anything.

0:25:190:25:21

So I might have to go and just revisit a stall

0:25:210:25:24

that I saw something that might just fit the bill.

0:25:240:25:26

Oh, brilliant. OK. Well, while Richard goes and does some

0:25:260:25:29

revisiting, we'll go and see what the Blue team bought.

0:25:290:25:32

First up, the golf clubs set them back a wedge of £60.

0:25:320:25:36

Next up was the child's Welsh costume. They paid only £10.

0:25:370:25:41

And finally, it was the tea set.

0:25:420:25:44

They eventually settled on £35.

0:25:440:25:47

So, boys, did you have fun?

0:25:470:25:49

-Very much so, yeah.

-Very much.

-Yeah? You enjoyed it?

0:25:490:25:51

-You stuck to your plan as well. You got something Welsh.

-Mm-hm.

0:25:510:25:54

Something local. That was good.

0:25:540:25:55

-Yeah, we are more than happy with our purchases.

-More than happy.

0:25:550:25:58

Do you think your three purchases are going to secure you this coveted

0:25:580:26:01

golden gavel that you want so badly?

0:26:010:26:03

-Hopefully. Fingers crossed.

-Really?

-Yeah.

0:26:030:26:05

We've got a golden buy in there, I think. Hot tickets all the way.

0:26:050:26:08

Ooh, the confidence, I like it.

0:26:080:26:10

OK, so what was your favourite item, Samuel?

0:26:100:26:13

Mine was the golf clubs.

0:26:130:26:14

I fell in love with them as soon as I saw them.

0:26:140:26:17

-Really?

-Yeah.

-OK, so it's love at first sight for you.

0:26:170:26:20

What about you, Theo? What was your favourite purchase?

0:26:200:26:22

-Great minds think alike.

-Mm-hm.

0:26:220:26:24

-The golf clubs, I think they are the winner.

-Really? Unanimous agreement.

0:26:240:26:27

OK, and do you think they will make you a profit?

0:26:270:26:29

-Yeah, absolutely.

-Ugh! My goodness!

0:26:290:26:31

All around. OK. You two spent all of £105 on your three purchases.

0:26:310:26:36

So I would like £195 of leftover lolly, please.

0:26:360:26:39

-Here you are.

-Fantastic. Hey, Caroline, look at that!

0:26:390:26:42

-Wow.

-£195.

-Thank you very much.

0:26:420:26:45

What are you going to do with it, my love?

0:26:450:26:46

-I've seen just the thing for these two young men.

-Oh, really?

0:26:460:26:50

-Mm.

-Something that fits the bill.

0:26:500:26:52

Something that absolutely fits the bill. Yep.

0:26:520:26:55

Well, while Caroline goes off and does her final shopping,

0:26:550:26:58

We'll head off to the auction.

0:26:580:26:59

We have hopped, skipped and jumped an hour down the road from Cardiff

0:27:100:27:13

to be with Peter Francis Auctioneers and Valuers

0:27:130:27:15

here in Carmarthen, with Charles Hampshire, auctioneer.

0:27:150:27:18

-Charles, thank you so much for having us.

-Happy to have you here.

0:27:180:27:21

Brilliant. Good. I'm glad. Now, let's crack on with the Reds.

0:27:210:27:23

Their first purchase was this trumpet over here.

0:27:230:27:26

What do you think of that?

0:27:260:27:27

I like it. You know, we sell a lot of musical instruments,

0:27:270:27:30

and they tend to do quite well.

0:27:300:27:32

Couple of things going against it would be lack of box

0:27:320:27:35

and no name attached to it as such.

0:27:350:27:37

OK, so a couple of things going against it.

0:27:370:27:39

But what are your predictions with regards to auction estimate?

0:27:390:27:42

We've gone for £20 to £30.

0:27:420:27:44

They paid £63 for it.

0:27:440:27:46

I can't see us getting there, even on a good day.

0:27:460:27:48

OK, well, never mind. Onwards and upwards.

0:27:480:27:50

Let's move on to this gorgeous train. I love this.

0:27:500:27:53

-Great, isn't it? Yeah. It's good fun.

-Fabulous.

0:27:530:27:56

It's nice and original. It's ready to go.

0:27:560:27:58

-And the toy market, we find, is buoyant here.

-Mm-hm.

0:27:580:28:02

It's probably been built by a grandpa or somebody in his

0:28:020:28:05

-garden shed...

-I think so.

-..for his grandchildren.

0:28:050:28:08

-Lovingly made and painted.

-And used. It's got that nice wear to it.

0:28:080:28:13

-Absolutely.

-Yeah. What have you estimated it at?

0:28:130:28:16

-We've gone for £20 to £30.

-And it'll go above that, won't it?

0:28:160:28:19

I think so, yeah. I think we could get to 50.

0:28:190:28:22

Yeah, I absolutely agree. I think it's gorgeous.

0:28:220:28:24

-They paid only £5 for this.

-Onto a winner.

0:28:240:28:26

I think so too. I think they did an absolutely cracking job with that.

0:28:260:28:29

What do we think about their third item here?

0:28:290:28:31

-It's quite unusual, isn't it?

-Unusual thing.

0:28:310:28:33

I haven't seen one personally before.

0:28:330:28:35

And it relates to a really important piece of social history -

0:28:350:28:38

the miners' strike in '84, '85.

0:28:380:28:41

-Hugely important.

-Sought-after thing. Got a lot going for it.

0:28:410:28:44

Great. Bearing that in mind, what's your estimate?

0:28:440:28:47

I've probably been a bit hard after all that build up. £15 to £25.

0:28:470:28:50

SHE LAUGHS Well, look, they paid £20 for it.

0:28:500:28:53

-OK.

-So we are sort of there or thereabouts.

-I think they are. Yeah.

0:28:530:28:56

OK, so it looks like it's going to be a bit of

0:28:560:28:59

a rollercoaster ride for these guys over here.

0:28:590:29:01

-So they may need their bonus buy.

-OK.

-So let's go have a look at it.

0:29:010:29:04

Richard, you had £212. That's a goodly sum, isn't it?

0:29:060:29:09

What did you find for our cool customers?

0:29:090:29:11

Well, on the way round,

0:29:110:29:12

we kept talking about looking for something scientific.

0:29:120:29:15

I got you...

0:29:150:29:16

-Oh, wow!

-Oh, wow!

0:29:160:29:18

I found a tankard, but a tankard which is decorated with the

0:29:180:29:23

scene of the lunar landing 1969. So it commemorates Apollo 11.

0:29:230:29:28

And this particular tankard has a very Welsh-sounding name.

0:29:280:29:32

It's from Portmeirion Pottery.

0:29:320:29:34

Welsh, you might think. Actually, it's from Stoke-on-Trent.

0:29:340:29:37

It's a well-potted example. It's in good condition.

0:29:370:29:40

And, if nothing else, you can fill it up with a pint...

0:29:400:29:43

SHE LAUGHS

0:29:430:29:44

-..and use it for what it was made for.

-Have a look at it, guys.

0:29:440:29:47

So how much did you pay for it?

0:29:470:29:49

It was priced at £25. I got a little discount. Down to 20.

0:29:490:29:55

-There is a couple scratches on it.

-Mm.

-Whoa, not perfect, is it?

0:29:550:30:00

-They are being picky, aren't they?

-Scratches?

-A couple of scratches.

0:30:000:30:03

Well, if you'd been made in 1969,

0:30:030:30:05

-you'd have a few scratches on you as well.

-I suppose.

0:30:050:30:08

That wouldn't worry me. There are no chips and no cracks as such.

0:30:080:30:11

And there is a huge interest in space memorabilia, is there not?

0:30:110:30:15

-There is.

-How much do you think it would make at auction?

0:30:150:30:18

I would hope that the auctioneer might open the bidding

0:30:180:30:22

at £15 and get it up to nearer 30.

0:30:220:30:25

-So a small profit?

-A small profit.

-OK.

0:30:250:30:27

Your thoughts, guys. What do you think?

0:30:270:30:29

It's something I'd buy personally,

0:30:290:30:30

but is it going to make money on the day?

0:30:300:30:32

Oof, well, you don't have to decide now. Have a think about it.

0:30:320:30:35

But for the benefit of those at home,

0:30:350:30:37

let's see what the auctioneer thinks of Richard's rather lunar bonus buy.

0:30:370:30:41

Love this. Lot of design in that and a piece of Portmeirion.

0:30:410:30:45

-One of my favourite things you've shown me.

-Oh, really?

-Yeah.

0:30:450:30:48

Oh, happy days. Good. OK.

0:30:480:30:50

Well, just that contrast between the gilt and the black is

0:30:500:30:52

-really quite stunning, isn't it?

-Absolutely, yeah. I agree.

0:30:520:30:55

Are you going to predict it's going to leap into the stratosphere?

0:30:550:30:58

-I don't think so. £15 to £25.

-All right, that's OK.

0:30:580:31:02

-Richard paid £20 for it.

-That seems bang-on. Yeah.

0:31:020:31:05

Yeah, OK. So let's move over to the Blue team.

0:31:050:31:08

Now, the first of the Blue team's purchases

0:31:080:31:11

was the golf clubs over there.

0:31:110:31:12

Vintage golf clubs, unless they are very early and unusual,

0:31:120:31:16

don't tend to do particularly well. But it's quite complete.

0:31:160:31:19

You know, the woods have their covers etc.

0:31:190:31:22

So, a nice vintage piece, yeah.

0:31:220:31:24

What's your thoughts with regard to value, Charles?

0:31:240:31:26

We've put them in at £30 to £40.

0:31:260:31:27

OK, all right. They might be slightly disappointed with that.

0:31:270:31:30

-They paid £60 for them.

-OK.

0:31:300:31:31

So, their second item, they went along the Welsh theme over there

0:31:310:31:36

with their little child's costume.

0:31:360:31:38

Very appropriate for here in Carmarthen.

0:31:380:31:40

I think it will do well. Nice vintage child's costume.

0:31:400:31:44

Fairly complete by the looks of it. I like it. Yeah.

0:31:440:31:46

So what is your estimate?

0:31:460:31:48

Estimate - £15 to £30.

0:31:480:31:50

-OK, they'll be delighted. £10 only paid.

-Perfect.

0:31:500:31:52

They really were buying for the right market, weren't they?

0:31:520:31:54

-I think so.

-Now, their final item,

0:31:540:31:56

-we've got a sample of it here, haven't we?

-We have.

0:31:560:31:58

But there is quite an extensive collection of these teawares.

0:31:580:32:01

Yes. I can see why they picked it. Nice decoration.

0:32:010:32:03

Few problems with how complete it is.

0:32:030:32:06

We are missing the teapot, which is the feature piece,

0:32:060:32:08

-and one or two other pieces along the way.

-OK, all right.

0:32:080:32:11

Yeah, I mean, the teapot really is the one that you want.

0:32:110:32:14

But, having said that, it's a great shape.

0:32:140:32:16

Yeah, agreed. A great shape, in good condition what we've got here.

0:32:160:32:20

-So we've gone for 15 to £25.

-OK. They paid £35...

-OK.

0:32:200:32:24

-..for the whole lot. So we're not a million miles away.

-No.

0:32:240:32:27

If it was complete, I'd be saying that sort of value, sure.

0:32:270:32:30

-That sort of figure?

-Yeah.

-All right. Super.

0:32:300:32:32

Look, it's not looking too hot for the Blue team as yet.

0:32:320:32:35

So they may need their bonus buy.

0:32:350:32:37

Let's go and have a little look at it.

0:32:370:32:39

Nearly £200 of leftover lolly you had. These boys were very generous.

0:32:410:32:44

£195. What did you spend it on?

0:32:440:32:46

-You're looking worried.

-Feeling very excited.

0:32:460:32:49

Well, I didn't spend it all.

0:32:490:32:51

But I bought something that I just think fits the bill

0:32:510:32:56

for you two dapper chappies.

0:32:560:32:57

Oh.

0:32:570:32:59

-Wow!

-Wow!

0:32:590:33:01

What is it?

0:33:010:33:02

-Well...

-Is it something you put on your head?

0:33:020:33:05

It is something. I'm going to make you put it on your head.

0:33:050:33:08

-That's why you bought it.

-Watch the hair!

0:33:080:33:11

-Watch the hair!

-This is the most gorgeous

0:33:110:33:14

19th-century gentlemen's smoking cap.

0:33:140:33:17

When the tobacco smoke would offend ladies,

0:33:170:33:21

gentlemen would wear something like this to protect the hair from

0:33:210:33:25

the smell of tobacco whilst also keeping their heads warm.

0:33:250:33:28

Sometimes known as a thinking cap as well.

0:33:280:33:31

Beautifully embroidered. Silk velvet.

0:33:310:33:34

-Quilted in silk inside.

-Lovely.

0:33:340:33:38

Dates from 1880, 1870 to 1880, I would think.

0:33:380:33:42

Originally, I think it would have had a button here and a tassel.

0:33:420:33:45

But I think they are gorgeous. Really stylish gentleman's headgear.

0:33:450:33:49

Can I put it on? Go on, then.

0:33:490:33:51

Watch the hair, Caroline! THEY LAUGH

0:33:510:33:54

Look at that.

0:33:540:33:56

Now that looks really good. Is that cool or what?

0:33:560:33:59

-Sold it to me.

-Yeah, I think it's gorgeous.

0:33:590:34:01

What do you think of it, chaps?

0:34:010:34:02

-I think it's different. It's going to stand out in the auction.

-Yeah.

0:34:020:34:06

-How much did that set you back then?

-£24.

0:34:060:34:09

Less than I thought it would be.

0:34:090:34:11

-How much do you think it would make at auction?

-£25. No...

0:34:110:34:14

I would think between 20 and £30. 25, £35.

0:34:140:34:18

-Potentially a small profit in there.

-Yes, a small profit.

0:34:180:34:22

So, while the chaps put their thinking caps on, we'll go and see

0:34:220:34:25

what the auctioneer thinks of Caroline's rather lovely bonus buy.

0:34:250:34:28

-Now, Charles, I love this.

-I can see why.

0:34:280:34:31

A smoker's cap. Now, I think,

0:34:310:34:32

in your study, with your pipe at night...

0:34:320:34:34

-Yes.

-..it would suit you down to the ground.

0:34:340:34:37

There we are. Well, we've got a buyer for it then.

0:34:370:34:39

SHE LAUGHS

0:34:390:34:41

Nice decoration, nice embroidery.

0:34:410:34:43

Yeah, I like it. It's tiny. A bit small, maybe.

0:34:430:34:46

And it's missing its tassel off the top here.

0:34:460:34:48

-Missing the tassel, you are quite right.

-Which is a shame, really.

0:34:480:34:51

Nonetheless, great thing.

0:34:510:34:52

So what's your thoughts with regards to that, Charles?

0:34:520:34:54

We've put ten to 20 on it. The tassel is a slight shame.

0:34:540:34:57

But I hope I've been a bit cautious here.

0:34:570:34:59

Yeah, I hope so too

0:34:590:35:01

cos I think the embroidery on it is particularly lovely.

0:35:010:35:03

-So, OK. Caroline paid £24 for it.

-OK.

0:35:030:35:06

-So predicting, potentially, a little loss there.

-A little loss.

0:35:060:35:09

Charles, will you be taking the auction for us?

0:35:090:35:11

I'm happy to say I will be.

0:35:110:35:12

-Brilliant, we are hugely looking forward to it.

-Excellent.

0:35:120:35:15

..to my right. 40. 60 in the room.

0:35:160:35:18

Last time then. 65. All done.

0:35:180:35:23

Right, well, look.

0:35:230:35:24

First of all, we've got coming up your brass trumpet.

0:35:240:35:27

John, this was your favourite.

0:35:270:35:28

-And you predicted the most profit on this.

-Yes.

-Yeah.

0:35:280:35:31

There is absolutely no cause for concern.

0:35:310:35:33

I think this item is going to go for the most.

0:35:330:35:36

-I love your confidence.

-Slightly sceptical.

0:35:360:35:39

-To say the least.

-THEY ALL LAUGH

0:35:390:35:41

We'll see.

0:35:410:35:42

You invested £63 in it.

0:35:420:35:44

Let's hope we can get that back for you. If not more. Here it comes.

0:35:440:35:47

Any musicians in here today?

0:35:470:35:49

£30 to start me.

0:35:490:35:50

30 to go. There should be hands.

0:35:500:35:52

20 if you will, then.

0:35:520:35:54

In and away. 12 and 15 we start at...

0:35:540:35:56

-John, how are you feeling?

-Great. 18. 18.

0:35:560:36:00

Taking the gentleman's bid at 18. Is there 20 for you online?

0:36:000:36:03

Come on, trumpet.

0:36:030:36:04

Bid's with you, sir, on the left as I see it.

0:36:040:36:06

The trumpet is done then. Selling to my left at 18 only.

0:36:060:36:09

-£18.

-Is that good?

-No.

-That made you a loss of £45, sadly.

0:36:090:36:13

So now we've got the painted wooden child's toy train.

0:36:130:36:18

You bought this for only £5. I love this.

0:36:180:36:21

Let's recoup some of those losses, let's go.

0:36:210:36:24

50. 5. 60. 5.

0:36:240:36:25

-Yes! You guys!

-'70. 5'

0:36:250:36:27

At £75...

0:36:270:36:29

Awesome, well done! Woohoo!

0:36:290:36:31

..commissioned interest here at £75. It's up to you now. Is there 80?

0:36:310:36:34

Any advance? The bid is here with me, make no mistake.

0:36:340:36:37

Bid in front of them. 75 and selling.

0:36:370:36:39

Well done.

0:36:390:36:41

-Fantastic.

-Back in the game!

-It made you a profit of £70.

0:36:410:36:44

That recoups your losses on the trumpet.

0:36:440:36:46

You're at plus £25 now. Here we go.

0:36:460:36:48

We have got the wonderful miner's lamp coming up now. Best of luck.

0:36:480:36:53

Good piece of social history here for you.

0:36:530:36:55

Interest again. Three bidders here with me.

0:36:550:36:58

-20. 2. 25 straight in with me.

-Profit straightaway.

-Yes.

0:36:580:37:02

8 on the front. 30. 32.

0:37:020:37:04

35 here. 8 for you now, sir, I would have thought?

0:37:040:37:09

£38 bid. I'm out. At £38 front row.

0:37:100:37:12

Commission's gone.

0:37:120:37:13

Bid's in the room at £38. And selling.

0:37:130:37:15

Fantastic.

0:37:150:37:17

£38 that sold for so that is a profit of £80 for you on that lot.

0:37:170:37:21

That gives you a total of plus £43 over all.

0:37:210:37:24

-Fantastic.

-That's good.

-That is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.

0:37:240:37:28

So now we have a big decision to make.

0:37:280:37:30

Are you going to go with your bonus buy?

0:37:300:37:32

-I think people will be into it, yeah.

-Yeah, we'll give it a go.

0:37:320:37:35

-Why not?

-Risk takers.

-Yep.

-Yeah?

-Well said.

0:37:350:37:38

RICHARD CHUCKLES I love it.

0:37:380:37:39

It's the adrenaline junkies, isn't it?

0:37:390:37:41

Brilliant. Here it comes now. Good luck, team.

0:37:410:37:44

20 to start you. I would've thought straight in.

0:37:440:37:46

10 we are. 12 here.

0:37:460:37:48

At 12 only. 15 if you'd like now.

0:37:480:37:50

-15. 18 online we've got.

-Come on!

0:37:500:37:53

At £18. Bidding 20 if you will now.

0:37:530:37:55

It's in the UK at 18. Is there 20 elsewhere?

0:37:550:37:58

-Final call, it seems.

-Oh, no. Come on.

-We made a horrible decision.

0:37:580:38:01

-'Selling.'

-GAVEL BANGS

0:38:010:38:03

-Oh, that's a shame!

-£2 loss.

0:38:030:38:05

That sold for £18 so you were at minus 2,

0:38:050:38:08

which takes your scored to plus £41.

0:38:080:38:11

-Happy with that result.

-Well done.

-Thank you very much.

0:38:110:38:14

-Great teamwork.

-Fantastic.

-Pleasure.

0:38:140:38:18

-Guys, we feeling excited?

-Very excited.

-Yeah.

0:38:230:38:26

-You are practically bouncing.

-Yeah, bouncing.

-I'm buzzing.

0:38:260:38:29

Well, look, it's very exciting.

0:38:290:38:30

You've got some really interesting lots as well.

0:38:300:38:33

So, first up is your vintage leather golf bag.

0:38:330:38:35

It was both of your favourite and you both predicted a profit on this,

0:38:350:38:39

so very best of luck. Here it comes.

0:38:390:38:41

All the golf clubs and contents. 30, if you will, then.

0:38:410:38:44

Where do you place it?

0:38:440:38:45

In and away with me, then.

0:38:450:38:46

15, 18, and 20 only.

0:38:460:38:48

At £20 we start. And 2, if you'd like. 22.

0:38:480:38:50

25 here on commission.

0:38:500:38:51

'8, if you will, online now.'

0:38:510:38:53

Internet interest as well, so that's good.

0:38:530:38:54

At £28, I'm out. The UK bidder has it at 28.

0:38:540:38:57

'Is it 30 for you now? I can see you there. Two of you now.'

0:38:570:39:00

Bid if you'd like. Final call given.

0:39:000:39:02

Gavel raised. At £28 and selling.

0:39:020:39:05

-Oh, dear.

-OK.

0:39:050:39:06

So that is a loss of £32 on that, sadly.

0:39:060:39:09

-Now, look. Next, we've got the little child's Welsh costume.

-Yeah.

0:39:090:39:12

OK, really, really sweet thing. You paid £10 for this.

0:39:120:39:15

Surely it's got to make a profit. You've taken it to the right market.

0:39:150:39:18

Here it comes.

0:39:180:39:20

£30 to start me. The vintage one there. 30 to go.

0:39:200:39:23

20, if you will. Should be hands in the air at that sort of level.

0:39:230:39:26

At 12 and 15 only. At 15...

0:39:260:39:28

-You were into a profit.

-Yes.

-'It will be sold at 15.'

0:39:280:39:30

-Well done.

-'I would have thought more here.'

0:39:300:39:32

You've surprised me.

0:39:320:39:33

At 15 only, then. Final call.

0:39:330:39:35

It seems you've finished with it, then. Gavel going down.

0:39:350:39:38

15 only.

0:39:380:39:40

Brilliant, guys. That's recouped some of those losses.

0:39:400:39:43

You've made a £5 profit on that,

0:39:430:39:45

which takes you back to minus 27 at the moment.

0:39:450:39:48

Let's see if we can make it up on the teawares. Here they come.

0:39:480:39:51

20 to start. 10, if you will.

0:39:510:39:53

10, surely. 10, 12, 15.

0:39:530:39:55

18, 20, 2.

0:39:550:39:57

5, surely now. One more? No.

0:39:570:39:59

-'£22, furthest away. Can't tempt you.'

-Come on.

0:39:590:40:01

Quiet online. Bid's in the room, then. To my left, as I see it.

0:40:010:40:04

£22.

0:40:040:40:06

-Oh.

-Oh, no.

-Oh, dear.

0:40:060:40:08

OK, that sold for £22, so you are down

0:40:080:40:11

£13 on that. Gives you an overall score of minus £40.

0:40:110:40:15

Can Caroline claw it back without bonus buy?

0:40:150:40:17

Are you going to go with it, guys?

0:40:170:40:19

-All in?

-I think we should go for it.

-Yeah.

-Should we?

0:40:190:40:22

-Let's win, come on!

-Yeah?

-Go on, then.

-Let's do it.

-Yeah?

0:40:220:40:25

-In for a penny, in for a pound?

-Yeah, let's go for it.

0:40:250:40:27

-Are you absolutely sure?

-Yeah.

-Final answer?

-Final answer.

0:40:270:40:30

-Yeah, guess so.

-We'll see what happens. It's not over yet.

0:40:300:40:33

-OK.

-OK?

-Yeah.

-Here it comes. Good luck.

0:40:330:40:35

22 to go. Where do you see it? 20 to start me.

0:40:350:40:37

You've all tried it on. 10, if you will. Where are you? 10, surely.

0:40:370:40:40

5, we start. £8, a seated bid.

0:40:400:40:43

10 online. 12, sir, now. 12, the bid in front.

0:40:430:40:45

-'At £12 the bid in front.'

-15.

0:40:450:40:47

15 online. Where are you, sir? One more? No.

0:40:470:40:49

-'UK bidder at 15. Quiet elsewhere.'

-Surely.

-'Final call.'

0:40:490:40:53

Online it seems, then, taking it home. 15 only.

0:40:530:40:56

Oh! I'm so sorry.

0:40:560:40:58

-Oh, gosh.

-That sold for £15, guys.

-I take no responsibility.

0:40:580:41:02

Which is a loss, unfortunately, of £9.

0:41:030:41:07

Now, overall you were at minus £49.

0:41:070:41:09

I like your style, guys.

0:41:090:41:11

In for a penny, in for a pound. You went for it.

0:41:110:41:13

-Sadly, it didn't work this time.

-Not for us today.

0:41:130:41:16

But, you never know, that could be on Bargain Hunt a winning score.

0:41:160:41:19

-It could be.

-It could be.

0:41:190:41:21

-You never know. Don't say a word to the Reds.

-We won't.

-Well done, guys.

0:41:210:41:24

Thank you.

0:41:240:41:25

I have to say, the results have got very similar numbers.

0:41:310:41:35

-Ooh!

-Very similar ones.

0:41:350:41:37

Only, one of you has got a plus in front of it

0:41:370:41:40

and one of you has got a minus in front of it.

0:41:400:41:43

And unfortunately, our minus figure is our Blues.

0:41:430:41:47

Very, very sadly. So well done, Reds. But, yes, our Blues.

0:41:470:41:51

My goodness, it all sort of slightly went from bad to worse, didn't it?

0:41:510:41:54

-Only you made a profit on your little Welsh costume.

-Yeah, we did.

0:41:540:41:57

So, well done. You made a £5 profit on that.

0:41:570:42:00

So overall, chaps, you lost £49,

0:42:000:42:02

-but have you enjoyed the experience? BOTH:

-Yes.

-It's been wonderful.

0:42:020:42:05

Good. We've been delighted to have you on the show.

0:42:050:42:07

Well done, guys. You've been brilliant.

0:42:070:42:09

But our victorious Reds over here.

0:42:090:42:12

It's all about the train, isn't it?

0:42:120:42:14

-It is, it is. For a fiver.

-That wonderful train.

-The gravy train.

0:42:140:42:17

-A steal.

-Yeah. A £5 investment, you made £75, hammer.

0:42:170:42:21

So £70 profit, which took you back into the black.

0:42:210:42:24

It was quite splendid, so you ended up on £43.

0:42:240:42:27

And then, well, we will gloss over Richard's bonus buy, shall we?

0:42:270:42:30

-Yeah.

-Wasn't needed.

-Exactly. So, you made £41 profit.

0:42:300:42:34

-So, here we go, guys. There we are.

-We'll buy a steak.

-There's a 20,

0:42:340:42:37

there's a 20. Now, you going to fight over the pound?

0:42:370:42:40

-I'll take the one.

-LAUGHTER

0:42:400:42:43

-So, very, very well done to you. Have you enjoyed it, guys?

-Yeah.

0:42:430:42:46

-It's been absolutely phenomenal. Really has.

-Brilliant.

0:42:460:42:48
