I'm driving across the Menai Strait to Anglesey,

0:00:050:00:08

off the north coast of Wales.

0:00:080:00:11

I'm behind the wheel of a motoring legend, the Land Rover Defender,

0:00:110:00:18

conceived in 1947 by Rover designer and local farmer Maurice Wilks

0:00:180:00:24

when he drew the shape of the vehicle

0:00:240:00:27

on the sand on a nearby beach,

0:00:270:00:30

and it's the perfect way for getting me to the fair,

0:00:300:00:34

so let's go Bargain Hunting!

0:00:340:00:37

Our fair is at the Mona Showground,

0:01:040:01:06

and there's a lot to choose from here.

0:01:060:01:09

Our teams have ?300 and one hour to scour the fair for bargains

0:01:100:01:14

that will hopefully make a profit at auction.

0:01:140:01:17

Let's see what's coming up.

0:01:170:01:19

There's fighting talk from the Reds...

0:01:210:01:23

But we're here to win Bargain Hunt, we need to find some bargains. OK.

0:01:230:01:26

The Blues are in the pink...

0:01:260:01:28

Pink!

0:01:280:01:29

No, more shabby than pink, we've got here.

0:01:290:01:32

And it's...pink.

0:01:320:01:34

..and I take time out to visit Chester Zoo...

0:01:340:01:37

Slimy sprats for breakfast, my little happy feet.

0:01:370:01:41

..and there is drama at the auction!

0:01:430:01:45

20 right away! 27!

0:01:450:01:48

Yes! Yes!

0:01:490:01:51

That's all for later,

0:01:530:01:54

but let's meet today's teams - and today is very much a family affair.

0:01:540:02:00

For the Reds, we have brothers Isaac and Ben

0:02:000:02:04

and for the Blues, we have a mum and daughter team, Karen and Becky.

0:02:040:02:09

Hello, everyone. ALL: Hello!

0:02:090:02:12

You all look absolutely lovely.

0:02:120:02:14

So, Ben, you two are brothers,

0:02:140:02:17

but where do you come in the pecking order?

0:02:170:02:19

There's six brothers in total. Six brothers?! Yeah.

0:02:190:02:21

I'm the oldest and then we've got the second oldest.

0:02:210:02:24

Right, who's the boss, though?

0:02:240:02:25

It's definitely got to be me. It's got to be you.

0:02:250:02:28

Although, today it's his birthday, so he can be the boss.

0:02:280:02:30

Oh, what age are you?

0:02:300:02:32

22. Oh, he's 22!

0:02:320:02:34

Isn't he a lovely 22-year-old? He is. I'm in my prime.

0:02:340:02:36

Ah, he's in his prime.

0:02:360:02:38

Yeah, you're gorgeous, gorgeous. Oh, thank you.

0:02:380:02:40

Now, you have a lovely wife.

0:02:400:02:44

I do. I know. And her name is Emily

0:02:440:02:47

and you carry her not just in your heart, but on your arm.

0:02:470:02:52

Tell me about that. I do carry her a lot, but, no, I do have a tattoo.

0:02:520:02:58

I got this quite a while back.

0:02:580:03:01

The reason I got it is because my fingers got too fat

0:03:010:03:04

for my wedding ring once I'd got married.

0:03:040:03:07

So I decided that a good compromise would be to get a tattoo instead.

0:03:070:03:10

Oh, and there she is and she's always with you.

0:03:100:03:13

Now, Isaac, over to you.

0:03:130:03:15

You're studying accountancy? Account and finance.

0:03:150:03:19

Yeah. But you've also got a wee sort of glamorous sideline.

0:03:190:03:23

I work in a cocktail bar on the side, just to pay the bills.

0:03:230:03:26

Is there a special action you have for the shaking?

0:03:260:03:30

Is the shaking important? Most of it's in the hips,

0:03:300:03:32

most of it's in the hips. All right. Give it a little shake, like this.

0:03:320:03:36

Oh, right! That's how I do it, just a little bit of magic.

0:03:360:03:39

So it's not just an arm action?

0:03:390:03:41

Oh, no, it's all in the hips.

0:03:410:03:44

So, boys, what are your tactics going to be today?

0:03:440:03:48

Well, I'm going to try and find the most ugly thing possible

0:03:480:03:51

for the cheapest price.

0:03:510:03:52

Not necessarily buy things that we would want in our own homes,

0:03:520:03:55

but buy things that we think those that are attending the auction

0:03:550:03:59

will want to buy. So, you've done your homework, you want to win.

0:03:590:04:04

Oh, yeah, were definitely going to get the golden gavel,

0:04:040:04:07

even if we need to steal it from these guys!

0:04:070:04:09

No way! No!

0:04:090:04:11

So, that's the Red team.

0:04:110:04:12

Over to the Blue team, mum and daughter, Karen and Becky.

0:04:120:04:17

Now, Karen, you have a very unlikely job for a gal.

0:04:170:04:21

Tell me a little bit about it.

0:04:210:04:22

I'm a motorbike parts specialist. Mm-hm.

0:04:220:04:26

It's an online business, I sell all over the world,

0:04:260:04:29

which is a bit unusual for a lady to be doing,

0:04:290:04:32

but it was my husband's fault.

0:04:320:04:35

He's actually been in the motorbike trade a long, long time

0:04:350:04:38

and one of his customers was selling a business,

0:04:380:04:40

so rather than a bunch of flowers,

0:04:400:04:42

I got a motorcycle parts business instead.

0:04:420:04:45

Are you crazy about bikes? Not as crazy as I should be.

0:04:450:04:48

I love sitting on the back of one, you know,

0:04:480:04:50

ride for miles on the back, but not myself, no.

0:04:500:04:54

Now, Becky, you're a student of psychology.

0:04:540:04:58

What attracted you to psychology?

0:04:580:04:59

I am. I find it so interesting, just how the mind works,

0:04:590:05:03

why people do things.

0:05:030:05:05

I just love the idea that there's no true answer,

0:05:050:05:07

it's always new ideas,

0:05:070:05:09

new research, so it's really good. Yeah, it's great fun.

0:05:090:05:12

Now, I hear you two are keen pub quizzers.

0:05:120:05:16

We do. Yes, we are. We love it.

0:05:160:05:17

We've got quite a good pub quiz team name.

0:05:170:05:20

It's the Not-So-Dumb Blondes.

0:05:200:05:22

Not-So-Dumb Blondes, boys!

0:05:220:05:25

This week, we did change the name, we were Bargain Blondes.

0:05:250:05:28

A little tribute to this show. Oh, wonderful! Did you win?

0:05:280:05:31

No. We never do!

0:05:310:05:32

THEY LAUGH

0:05:320:05:33

And what are your tactics going to be today?

0:05:330:05:36

Pretty things. Cheap, pretty things. Anything girlie.

0:05:360:05:39

If I want to buy it, it's got to look good in my own house.

0:05:390:05:42

Ah. Anything girlie, silver, like jewellery.

0:05:420:05:45

Well, you girls know what you want to buy,

0:05:450:05:47

so I'd better give you folks some money.

0:05:470:05:50

We have ?300 for you, girls... Thank you.

0:05:500:05:53

..?300 for the boys. Thank you.

0:05:530:05:54

Your experts await, so off you go. Thank you! See you!

0:05:540:05:59

I've got the feeling we've got a real competition on our hands today.

0:05:590:06:02

Our competitive teams need a couple of very talented experts.

0:06:050:06:09

Teaching the Reds a thing or two, it's Caroline Hawley...

0:06:090:06:13

and busting a move for the Blues, it's Philip Serrell.

0:06:130:06:17

Ben, Isaac, what are you looking for today?

0:06:190:06:22

Niche items, very ugly. I want some silver, jewellery.

0:06:220:06:26

I was thinking big, wood, metal, that sort of thing.

0:06:260:06:28

Stop! No. Stop! No. No.

0:06:280:06:30

Pink, girlie, pretty.

0:06:300:06:32

Something that's big, cast-iron, but again, ugly.

0:06:320:06:35

OK! Ugly's what we're after.

0:06:350:06:37

KAREN: Pretty, pink. Pink? Pink. Two words - pretty, pink.

0:06:370:06:41

Like us.

0:06:410:06:42

Time to get a move on, teams. Your 60 minutes start now.

0:06:430:06:47

Let's go and find some! Let's go!

0:06:470:06:49

Come on, then, let's get shopping. Going to enjoy this...

0:06:490:06:52

I bet you are!

0:06:520:06:54

So, it's ugly for the Reds and pretty for the Blues.

0:06:540:06:58

Good luck, experts.

0:06:580:07:00

Does it have to be ugly?

0:07:000:07:01

It can be pretty, pretty is always good.

0:07:010:07:04

Is pretty good?

0:07:040:07:05

Ugly is a relative term.

0:07:050:07:07

See, these are quite ugly. Are they ugly?

0:07:070:07:09

They are andirons, you'd put your fire irons on them.

0:07:090:07:12

Yeah, exactly. Depends how good-looking...

0:07:120:07:14

But they're quite ugly.

0:07:140:07:15

But what's the price, guys?

0:07:150:07:17

These are ?15, the fire dogs.

0:07:170:07:20

15? Yeah.

0:07:200:07:22

I think we should still have a look around and come back.

0:07:220:07:25

It's still early days now.

0:07:250:07:26

Thank you very much. Cheers, pal. Cheers. CAROLINE: Thank you.

0:07:260:07:28

One for the back burner

0:07:280:07:30

and it looks like the Blues are giving Philip a lesson in pink.

0:07:300:07:34

Isn't pink just pink? No, pink is not just pink.

0:07:340:07:37

You've got baby pink... Salmon pink. ..loads of different shades of pink.

0:07:370:07:40

Really? We should get three different shades for our products.

0:07:400:07:43

Really? Yes. Yeah, we should.

0:07:430:07:45

While Philip's education continues, the Reds have found something.

0:07:450:07:49

Ah, so, it's bound all the way round... Yeah.

0:07:490:07:52

..so there's no glue, it's stapled.

0:07:520:07:55

I could see that planted up with primulas, daffodils,

0:07:550:07:58

whatever's in season. I quite like that.

0:07:580:08:00

I've got a lot of teak items in my house,

0:08:000:08:02

and a lot of different wood ornaments,

0:08:020:08:05

so that would look good in my house.

0:08:050:08:08

You've got a ticket on here of ?40,

0:08:080:08:09

what's the best price you could do on it?

0:08:090:08:11

I can do it for ?30. CAROLINE: Yeah? What do we think of this, Isaac?

0:08:110:08:14

I think it's pretty good, but then again,

0:08:140:08:17

I wouldn't pay 30 for it, though.

0:08:170:08:18

Best price 30, I don't think I could pay that.

0:08:180:08:21

Could you do it for 25?

0:08:210:08:23

Yes, I will. Deal. You've got a deal. Thank you. OK.

0:08:230:08:26

Cheers. CAROLINE: Well, excellent, guys.

0:08:260:08:29

First buy is in the bag, less than five minutes.

0:08:290:08:32

First buy! Let's go. Let's go! Let's get on with the second buy.

0:08:320:08:35

Let's crack on.

0:08:350:08:37

These guys are not hanging around.

0:08:370:08:39

They've got their eyes on that golden gavel

0:08:390:08:42

and item one is in the bag, but have the girls found pink heaven?

0:08:420:08:47

Look at these flamingos! Pink!

0:08:470:08:51

Oh, you've got to say they're pretty. Do you not love them?

0:08:510:08:54

Oh, come on! Say something!

0:08:540:08:56

Girlie, pretty, pink, they're perfect.

0:08:560:08:58

I think he's speechless.

0:08:580:09:00

But they're really... Pink, that's what they really are.

0:09:020:09:05

They're really pink.

0:09:050:09:06

What do you think you're going to make at auction?

0:09:060:09:10

I think somebody'd pay ?40 for them.

0:09:100:09:13

I think you're deluded! Somebody with more money than sense.

0:09:130:09:16

Yeah. And I think I might just be with them.

0:09:160:09:19

Or someone might just fall in love with them, like we have. Yeah.

0:09:190:09:21

They're old cans, aren't they? But how much are they each?

0:09:210:09:24

They might only be ?10 for the pair. There's... I'm dreading this.

0:09:240:09:27

He's on his phone now, look.

0:09:270:09:29

How much are these...? SELLER: 35.

0:09:290:09:32

How much? 35.

0:09:320:09:34

Each?

0:09:340:09:35

BECKY: Would you be able to do 30 for two?

0:09:350:09:37

SELLER: No.

0:09:370:09:39

What's your real, real, real lowest?

0:09:390:09:42

?40, I'll take.

0:09:420:09:44

BECKY: We love them, we'd regret it if we didn't buy them. Yeah.

0:09:440:09:47

Go on, that'll be our... That's our splashing out. Yeah.

0:09:470:09:51

Splashing out, best product.

0:09:510:09:52

I'll let you be the expert on the next buy. Is that right? Yes.

0:09:520:09:56

This is my little bit of frivolous.

0:09:560:09:58

We'll have them for the 40. SELLER: OK.

0:09:580:10:01

Philip is in a lot of pain, but the girls are rocking!

0:10:010:10:05

Seven minutes in and they have their first item.

0:10:050:10:08

Let's go inside because hopefully

0:10:080:10:10

there might be some old things in there.

0:10:100:10:12

They might be pink as well. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

0:10:120:10:15

The Reds have the same idea,

0:10:170:10:18

but it looks like the Blues have spotted something first,

0:10:180:10:21

although THAT'S not very pretty!

0:10:210:10:24

Think of it as a coffee table.

0:10:240:10:26

It doesn't look like a coffee table, it looks like a crate.

0:10:260:10:29

You could put a piece of glass on that

0:10:290:10:31

with the suckers on and that would look really, really good.

0:10:310:10:34

You could put a piece of glass on a brick,

0:10:340:10:35

it doesn't make it a coffee table. You can paint it pink.

0:10:350:10:38

Oh, I could paint it pink!

0:10:380:10:40

There you go, pink. No, that was a joke, honest.

0:10:400:10:42

THEY LAUGH

0:10:420:10:43

Think about it. This is the first... Yeah, we'll have a think,

0:10:430:10:45

but I do like that. Let's have a wander round.

0:10:450:10:48

That box has Philip written all over it, but one to ponder.

0:10:480:10:52

Have the Reds found anything ugly enough?

0:10:520:10:55

Oh, wow, this is really ugly!

0:10:550:10:58

Which one's that? Have you seen this here? This one.

0:10:580:11:00

Pick it up. Is this Troika?

0:11:000:11:03

No, it looks like it very much could be. Let's have a look.

0:11:030:11:07

It's really interesting, but still very ugly.

0:11:070:11:10

No, I don't think it is. It is very ugly.

0:11:100:11:13

Do you want me to see if I can find the owner?

0:11:130:11:15

Yeah, let's see if we can get a price on it.

0:11:150:11:18

What price would you like it to be? Well, depends who made it. 15?

0:11:180:11:21

Right, yeah, let's go and have a look. Hang on.

0:11:210:11:23

While Caroline goes off to find the price of the vase,

0:11:230:11:26

it's over to the Blues,

0:11:260:11:28

but that's not something I often see Philip holding.

0:11:280:11:32

This is a little silver powder compact and it's...

0:11:320:11:36

pink... Yes, perfect.

0:11:360:11:38

..which, as we know, is a key selling feature. It is.

0:11:380:11:41

This is engine-turned decoration, which is under the enamel,

0:11:410:11:44

on the silver.

0:11:440:11:45

Now, you don't want spend much money, do you?

0:11:450:11:48

No. Not at all. So, what would you spend on that?

0:11:480:11:51

?50, ?60? Yeah, about the same.

0:11:510:11:54

Maybe 30, 40. I'm a bit tight.

0:11:540:11:57

Oh!

0:11:580:12:00

I might like pink, but maybe not that much. Yeah.

0:12:000:12:03

Thank you very much, thank you.

0:12:030:12:04

Ouch! ?180.

0:12:040:12:06

It's lovely, but outside the girls' price range -

0:12:060:12:10

and, talking of prices, what's the story on the Reds' vase?

0:12:100:12:14

Right, I'm asking for it...

0:12:140:12:17

Yes? ..?45.

0:12:170:12:18

That... That's just way higher than we thought it would be.

0:12:180:12:22

It's a nice piece, I'm sure someone will buy it to put in their home,

0:12:220:12:25

but we're here to win Bargain Hunt, we need to find some bargains.

0:12:250:12:28

These guys are ruthless Bargain Hunters,

0:12:280:12:31

so it's a no to the vase, but what have the Blues found now?

0:12:310:12:36

Feathers. Are these ostrich feathers?

0:12:360:12:39

We've got a theme of birds.

0:12:390:12:42

Feeling the heat? How much is that?

0:12:420:12:45

35. 35.

0:12:450:12:47

What will this be?

0:12:470:12:49

That, I think, is probably plastic.

0:12:490:12:52

Let's put you on the spot now.

0:12:520:12:54

I appreciate that pink is probably your forte... Pink is. Yes.

0:12:540:12:57

..but what do you think that's going to make at auction?

0:12:570:13:00

It depends who wants it because, at the moment, all the retro's back,

0:13:000:13:03

isn't it? Yeah. Yeah, I think it would go for quite a lot at auction.

0:13:030:13:06

I think you would get 35... Do you? ..?40 for that.

0:13:060:13:09

So, if you could buy that,

0:13:090:13:10

just find out what the best you can do it for is.

0:13:100:13:13

The stallholder is a bit camera shy.

0:13:130:13:16

What's your very, very best?

0:13:160:13:18

STALLHOLDER: 20.

0:13:180:13:19

I know it's only ?1, could you do it at 19?

0:13:190:13:22

Thank you. Thank you so much.

0:13:220:13:24

We'll have that, thank you.

0:13:240:13:26

That's great! 25 minutes in and item two is in the bag

0:13:280:13:32

and they're sticking to their plan, but what does Philip think?

0:13:320:13:36

There's no doubt it's a little bit restricting

0:13:360:13:38

if you only like pink things, but you know, they're doing OK.

0:13:380:13:42

The thing is, two items bought, we've only spent 60 quid.

0:13:420:13:45

We've got ?240 left, and I've got a feeling

0:13:450:13:48

they're not going to let me spend very much money.

0:13:480:13:51

They may not be big spenders,

0:13:510:13:53

but they know what they like and that's no bad thing.

0:13:530:13:56

But the Reds are getting a bit cultured.

0:13:560:13:59

Wow, that's fifth position in ballet, I think!

0:13:590:14:03

Fifth? Yeah, first, second...

0:14:030:14:05

Yeah, I think I've done that. ..third, fourth, fifth.

0:14:050:14:09

Oh, wow! Yeah, fifth position. Well, I only knew the fifth.

0:14:090:14:13

The base seems solid, but the legs themselves are hollow.

0:14:130:14:16

What's it made of? It feels tinny.

0:14:160:14:20

But it's not very heavy. I think they're trying to be bronze.

0:14:200:14:23

I mean, it's an interesting piece. Even the base is laminated.

0:14:230:14:27

Now, it's ?95.

0:14:270:14:29

I think...

0:14:290:14:31

it's fairly modern.

0:14:310:14:33

I don't think it's brand-spanking-new.

0:14:330:14:36

I'm just trying to think how many people into ballet

0:14:360:14:38

are going to be at this auction.

0:14:380:14:40

Even if they're not into ballet, they might like it,

0:14:400:14:42

because it's a bit of a quirky piece.

0:14:420:14:44

It is! It's a very quirky piece!

0:14:440:14:46

Shall we make a cheeky offer? I think try your cheekiest.

0:14:460:14:49

Is he cheeky? He's the cheekiest person I know.

0:14:490:14:52

Is he? Shall we get the seller over?

0:14:520:14:54

You be cheeky alone. We're going to stop here. OK.

0:14:540:14:57

SELLER: Go on, what's your cheekiest?

0:14:570:14:59

I'll be very cheeky, but please don't be offended. OK. Go on.

0:14:590:15:01

You've got it listed for 95. Would you take 60?

0:15:010:15:04

Er...

0:15:040:15:06

I can do it for 65.

0:15:060:15:09

Can I be even cheekier and ask for another ?5 off

0:15:090:15:11

cos it's my birthday, so ?60?

0:15:110:15:13

Oh, well, if you don't ask, you don't get.

0:15:130:15:15

Seeing as it's your birthday, that's fine.

0:15:150:15:17

Thank you so much! Cheers. OK.

0:15:170:15:19

Really happy with that, thank you.

0:15:190:15:21

Cheers. Thank you. And have a nice birthday. Yeah, thanks.

0:15:210:15:23

What an item! 32 minutes in and they have item two.

0:15:230:15:27

Well done!

0:15:270:15:29

And it looks like Philip is at last

0:15:290:15:30

getting into the Blues' way of thinking.

0:15:300:15:33

You see, I'm drawn to this cos it's pink.

0:15:330:15:35

Oh, are you coming on to our side? I am, yeah. Pink is the word.

0:15:350:15:39

It's a bit...shabby, though, isn't it? Shabby pink.

0:15:390:15:42

Yeah, it's more... Do you think that's the way forward?

0:15:420:15:44

No, more shabby than pink, we've got here.

0:15:440:15:46

It's not a buy, but I feel Philip is changing.

0:15:460:15:49

Miracles do happen!

0:15:490:15:52

But what has Ben found now?

0:15:520:15:54

What do we think? I think you look great!

0:15:540:15:56

They look really good! SELLER: 20 quid.

0:15:560:15:59

Have we got a mirror? Yes, we do. Yep, you have.

0:15:590:16:01

CAROLINE: Yes, yes!

0:16:010:16:04

They're classic Dior, and even at ?20,

0:16:040:16:07

I don't think they'll make a profit at auction.

0:16:070:16:09

Meanwhile, back with the Blues, are my eyes deceiving me?

0:16:090:16:13

Are they really considering the crate?

0:16:130:16:16

I really, really like that crate.

0:16:160:16:18

I like the crate, I'll be honest. I can see its potential.

0:16:180:16:21

I can't see potential. There is another issue.

0:16:210:16:23

The issue is you've now got ten minutes left

0:16:230:16:27

and you've got to spend some money, so...

0:16:270:16:29

Right, five minutes here, within sight of this stall at all times.

0:16:290:16:34

I don't do running. I just don't want the crate!

0:16:340:16:36

Well, there's your incentive. It's a generational thing, isn't it?

0:16:360:16:39

It is.

0:16:390:16:40

Yes, ten minutes to go

0:16:400:16:42

and you need something prettier than that crate, girls!

0:16:420:16:44

But something has got the Reds excited.

0:16:440:16:46

How hideous is that?!

0:16:460:16:48

Oh... Seriously!

0:16:480:16:50

Probably the ugliest thing we've seen all day.

0:16:500:16:53

Seriously, the stuff of nightmares!

0:16:530:16:55

So, it's a, it's a bar money box... Yeah. ..usually smashed.

0:16:550:17:00

It's got a ticket on of 65.

0:17:000:17:03

What sort of offer do you think we should make on it?

0:17:030:17:06

Well...

0:17:060:17:08

I think that side's prettier than the front, really.

0:17:080:17:11

I think... BEN LAUGHS

0:17:110:17:13

I think... Oh, no, there's a plug. Oh, there is!

0:17:130:17:15

And it's at... That's where you get your money out.

0:17:150:17:17

But it says usually smashed. It's a modern plug, isn't it?

0:17:170:17:20

Yeah, that looks a bit of a...

0:17:200:17:21

It's a modern plug, it's not smashed. Pop that back in.

0:17:210:17:23

It's really ugly... ?40. ..it's not loads of money.

0:17:230:17:26

It's ?40 worth of chalk, that.

0:17:260:17:28

?40 worth of chalk. Where do you think that's going to end up?

0:17:280:17:30

It might go in a big farmhouse kitchen.

0:17:300:17:32

Yeah... Yeah. Well, do you want to go and see if you can find the owner

0:17:320:17:37

of this fine thing? I will.

0:17:370:17:38

Do you want to wait here and I'll go find them?

0:17:380:17:40

Yeah, go and find them.

0:17:400:17:42

It's just what they wanted, so fingers crossed.

0:17:420:17:46

The Blues are not sticking to their plan.

0:17:460:17:48

That is a branch. It's a nice branch.

0:17:480:17:50

Put it back, it's not a nice branch! It's a nice branch.

0:17:500:17:53

I can get you one off the tree outside. We're not having that.

0:17:530:17:56

So, what's the news on the Guinness pig?

0:17:560:17:59

?50.

0:17:590:18:00

?50 is the best that he can do.

0:18:000:18:03

I'm... I'm happy at that. I'm happy to pay ?50 for it.

0:18:030:18:06

Well, it fulfils all the criteria, doesn't it?

0:18:060:18:08

Most ugliest thing I've seen. It's so ugly.

0:18:080:18:12

So, do you want to go with it? Yeah, totally.

0:18:120:18:14

I think we should go with it. ?50, let's do it. Third buy done!

0:18:140:18:16

Let's go, guys. Whoo! Well done, you! Yes!

0:18:160:18:19

Whoa, they have all three items with ten minutes to spare,

0:18:190:18:22

but it sounds like Caroline has her own plan.

0:18:220:18:25

I'm going to spend the rest of the money on something beautiful.

0:18:250:18:28

What happened to ugly?! What?!

0:18:280:18:31

Now, can the Blues find something just as special?

0:18:310:18:34

Oh, I like this.

0:18:340:18:37

What's that? Oh, that's pretty.

0:18:370:18:39

I think it's a belt. A belt? No, no.

0:18:390:18:41

It wouldn't go around my waist, would it, look? No.

0:18:410:18:44

I don't think it would go round anybody's waist.

0:18:440:18:47

No, to go around their neck because it's a collar, look. Oh.

0:18:470:18:50

There we go. There you go,

0:18:530:18:55

you fit in with the team now, very beautiful.

0:18:550:18:57

I like that! Do you? Yes. I really like it, yeah.

0:18:570:19:00

How much is it?

0:19:000:19:01

It's ?70 and ticket says it's a belt, but who knows?

0:19:010:19:05

65?

0:19:050:19:07

That's what we can do. BECKY: I would rather go for that

0:19:070:19:09

cos I just do not want the crate.

0:19:090:19:11

The thing is, it's not pink and it's worrying me, this.

0:19:110:19:15

But it's pretty. It's nice and floral, decorative, necklace,

0:19:150:19:18

still very girlie.

0:19:180:19:20

Is 65 the best?

0:19:200:19:22

SELLER: Yeah. What do you both think? I like it.

0:19:220:19:24

BECKY: I'm very happy with it, I love it.

0:19:240:19:26

Shake the man's hand. Yes. SELLER: OK, thank you very much.

0:19:260:19:28

Thank you. Thank you.

0:19:280:19:29

Fabulous! With minutes to spare, they've bought their final item.

0:19:290:19:34

Sorry to be a BOAR, teams, but your time's up.

0:19:340:19:37

GONG SOUNDS

0:19:370:19:38

Can sit and relax now, it's all over.

0:19:380:19:41

You've been good sports, I've loved your company.

0:19:420:19:44

Let's remind ourselves what the Reds bought.

0:19:440:19:47

They snapped up the coopered bowl for ?25.

0:19:480:19:52

Will the ceramic dancer's legs pirouette to a profit?

0:19:540:19:58

It cost ?60.

0:19:580:19:59

And can the Guinness piggy bring a profit at market?

0:20:010:20:05

It was ?50.

0:20:050:20:07

Well, boys, you were a bit obsessed with wanting to buy something ugly.

0:20:070:20:14

What was that all about?

0:20:140:20:15

Well, instead of obsessed, we could probably say focused.

0:20:150:20:19

A lot of the times, people will buy things that are very obvious,

0:20:190:20:23

so we thought that we would not do that.

0:20:230:20:26

What was your favourite ugly item?

0:20:260:20:29

Well, I can honestly say that I didn't like any of them

0:20:290:20:33

apart from the wooden bowl, which I did half like.

0:20:330:20:36

So, do you both agree with one another on your favourite buys?

0:20:360:20:41

Yeah, definitely. Definitely agree.

0:20:410:20:43

So, what item do you think's going to make the most money?

0:20:430:20:46

I think the fake bronze legs on the fake...

0:20:460:20:51

marble base is going to make the most money.

0:20:510:20:53

Yeah, the ballerina legs. Do you agree?

0:20:530:20:55

The ballerina legs in the fifth position, definitely.

0:20:550:20:57

So, how much money did you spend?

0:20:570:20:59

We spent, in all, ?135 all together.

0:20:590:21:02

Not too bad! Can I have ?165? Yes.

0:21:020:21:05

?165.

0:21:050:21:06

Which I will hand over to... Thank you. ..the beautiful Caroline.

0:21:060:21:11

Thank you! Are you going to buy something ugly for them?

0:21:110:21:15

Do you know, I'm not, Anita?

0:21:150:21:17

I'm going to buy something beautiful.

0:21:170:21:20

What?! Yes, I am! I'm going to go against the grain,

0:21:200:21:23

I'm going to buy something beautiful and then we'll see.

0:21:230:21:26

I feel betrayed!

0:21:260:21:27

Well, as Caroline goes off and buys something beautiful,

0:21:290:21:33

let's remind ourselves what the Blues bought.

0:21:330:21:36

Will they be in the pink with the painted flamingos?

0:21:370:21:40

They were ?40.

0:21:400:21:42

Could the girlie ostrich-feather fan bring a profit?

0:21:430:21:47

It was ?19.

0:21:470:21:49

And can the pretty Art Nouveau belt, or is it a choker, wow the bidders?

0:21:500:21:55

It was ?65.

0:21:550:21:57

Girls, did you have a lovely time? We did. We had a great time.

0:21:570:22:01

And you bought pretty, girlie, pink things.

0:22:010:22:05

Yes. We definitely did. Did Phil love them?

0:22:050:22:08

THEY LAUGH

0:22:080:22:09

He did deep down.

0:22:090:22:10

We are... I'm now a fully paid-up member of the pink team.

0:22:100:22:14

Now, tell me, what was your favourite thing?

0:22:150:22:18

The pair of pink flamingos. Oh, no!

0:22:180:22:21

THEY LAUGH

0:22:210:22:23

What about you? I have to say the same, I did love 'em.

0:22:230:22:26

Pink flamingos! Yes.

0:22:260:22:29

But what item is going to make the most profit at auction?

0:22:290:22:33

I think the fan.

0:22:330:22:35

The fan? Yes, yes.

0:22:350:22:37

I think the silver floral choker that we bought.

0:22:370:22:40

Right, yeah. So, how much did you spend?

0:22:400:22:43

?124. 124, so you were a wee bit careful and canny with your money.

0:22:430:22:49

Yeah, I like to hold on to it. Yes. All right, OK.

0:22:490:22:52

Well, give me ?176.

0:22:520:22:55

Thank you.

0:22:550:22:56

Phil, now that you're a fully paid-up member in the pink team,

0:22:560:23:01

what are you going to spend all that money on?

0:23:010:23:03

Well, it might not be pink, but it will be...

0:23:030:23:07

ladylike.

0:23:070:23:09

Not wooden?

0:23:090:23:11

Not wooden, not metal, sort of...

0:23:110:23:14

hint of pink.

0:23:140:23:15

So, while Phil goes out to look for something girlie,

0:23:170:23:20

I'm going to take you for a walk on the wild side.

0:23:200:23:24

We've crossed the border into Cheshire

0:23:270:23:30

and I want to take you to its most famous landmark, Chester Zoo.

0:23:300:23:34

Regarded as one of the best zoos in the world,

0:23:340:23:37

1.5 million people visit here every year,

0:23:370:23:41

but the story of how it came to be is down to the ambition

0:23:410:23:45

of a truly remarkable man.

0:23:450:23:48

George Mottershead was a man with a vision.

0:23:480:23:52

He wanted to create something ground-breaking,

0:23:520:23:55

a zoo without bars,

0:23:550:23:57

and it became his life's work.

0:23:570:24:00

As a child, George had visited zoos,

0:24:010:24:04

but vowed one day to open his own zoo,

0:24:040:24:07

where animals moved around freely.

0:24:070:24:10

After serving in the First World War, he and his wife, Elizabeth,

0:24:100:24:14

started a market garden near Crewe.

0:24:140:24:17

Here, his passion for wild animals flourished.

0:24:170:24:21

I'm meeting Dr Mark Pilgrim, director-general of Chester Zoo,

0:24:210:24:26

to find out more.

0:24:260:24:27

He was very interested in birds and animals, always, from a child.

0:24:270:24:30

And then he started to have birds in his shop and that started to attract

0:24:300:24:33

more people and eventually that grew, and more birds,

0:24:330:24:36

and eventually monkeys and other things and...

0:24:360:24:38

In the shop! In the shop, and it was attracting enormous amounts

0:24:380:24:41

of people, so it became incredibly popular.

0:24:410:24:43

Good for business! Absolutely! So, what did he do?

0:24:430:24:46

He borrowed ?3,500 from his parents

0:24:460:24:50

and he bought this most beautiful house, here in Upton in Chester.

0:24:500:24:52

Wow! Well, I just can't wait for you to show me around.

0:24:520:24:56

Let's see some more.

0:24:560:24:57

The zoo was created in the grounds of the house.

0:24:570:25:00

George's parents, wife and two daughters all helped to build it

0:25:000:25:05

and it was opened on June 10, 1931.

0:25:050:25:09

George wanted to provide animals in a natural environment

0:25:090:25:12

and put them behind moats, for example, behind water,

0:25:120:25:15

where clearly, they can't escape,

0:25:150:25:17

but actually they have much more naturalistic settings

0:25:170:25:19

and a much more naturalistic enclosure,

0:25:190:25:21

so he was very much passionate about giving animals much more freedom

0:25:210:25:26

in their enclosures.

0:25:260:25:27

And what motivated him?

0:25:270:25:29

I think that George probably had a real empathy with animals.

0:25:290:25:33

He understood that, actually,

0:25:330:25:34

they needed space and fresh air and natural enclosures to thrive.

0:25:340:25:39

But many local people protested about the zoo,

0:25:390:25:43

fearing the animals would escape.

0:25:430:25:45

Well, back in those early days, they were really concerned,

0:25:450:25:47

this was really revolutionary, to keep animals in this way,

0:25:470:25:50

behind water and moats, so, yeah,

0:25:500:25:53

there was a real concern that the animals would escape

0:25:530:25:55

and we take it for granted these days,

0:25:550:25:57

but back then it was the way it was.

0:25:570:26:01

'Many of the zoo's inhabitants became personalities

0:26:010:26:04

'in their own right.'

0:26:040:26:06

So, who was Pelly?

0:26:060:26:07

Ah, Pelly was a pelican who just had complete free range of the zoo.

0:26:070:26:11

She just walked around everywhere, into the houses,

0:26:110:26:14

I'm sure she went into the main house,

0:26:140:26:16

probably stole fish out of the kitchen,

0:26:160:26:18

became really firm friends with June, who was George's daughter,

0:26:180:26:22

almost as a pet, and they went around everywhere together.

0:26:220:26:25

And I believe that there was a famous chimp, as well?

0:26:250:26:29

Indeed, yeah, Mary.

0:26:290:26:30

So, Mary was a chimpanzee who came in 1932.

0:26:300:26:34

She was very gentle and, again, had the free run of the place

0:26:340:26:36

and was doing all sorts of things and became a real local character.

0:26:360:26:41

But in the first few years,

0:26:410:26:43

visitor numbers were so low the zoo failed to make any money.

0:26:430:26:48

George managed to win local supporters to back the project

0:26:480:26:52

and, in May 1934,

0:26:520:26:54

the zoo was declared a non-profit-making charity.

0:26:540:26:57

It was saved!

0:26:570:26:59

Well, I think it was really due to George's personality.

0:26:590:27:01

He had incredible drive and vision, just an incredible personality,

0:27:010:27:05

to keep going through the hardships. Perseverance. Perseverance.

0:27:050:27:08

After the Second World War, the zoo's popularity really took off.

0:27:100:27:14

A new marketing slogan, "Always Building," boosted visitor numbers.

0:27:140:27:19

George was awarded an OBE

0:27:190:27:21

and continued to work at the zoo until his death in 1978.

0:27:210:27:27

His legacy really was that he changed the way that

0:27:270:27:29

people thought about keeping animals.

0:27:290:27:31

You know, 85 years later, we're still a charity

0:27:310:27:34

and doing fantastic conservation work around the world. Yeah.

0:27:340:27:38

Mark, George was a remarkable, amazing and inspiring man,

0:27:380:27:43

so thank you for telling me all about him.

0:27:430:27:46

But before I go, I believe you have a wee surprise in place for me?

0:27:460:27:52

We certainly do, let's go and see.

0:27:520:27:53

It turns out it's feeding time at the zoo and I'm in charge!

0:27:570:28:02

Come on, guys, slimy sprats for breakfast.

0:28:020:28:06

Here's one for you, darling.

0:28:070:28:09

My little happy feet.

0:28:090:28:11

Plenty for all!

0:28:110:28:13

Sprats, sprats, lovely, tasty sprats!

0:28:130:28:16

Wahey!

0:28:170:28:19

That was amazing!

0:28:210:28:24

But now it's time to head to the auction.

0:28:240:28:26

Will the teams have any wild encounters today?

0:28:260:28:30

Let's go and see.

0:28:300:28:31

Today, we're at Peter Wilson Auctioneers in Nantwich,

0:28:410:28:45

with auctioneer Robert Jones.

0:28:450:28:47

It's lovely to be here, Robert. Nice to see you, Anita.

0:28:470:28:50

Right, let's have a look at the Red teams lots. Mm-hm.

0:28:500:28:53

Isaac and Ben, and their first lot was this huge bowl.

0:28:530:28:58

This is a great decorator's lot.

0:28:580:29:01

This is the sort of thing, if you've got a nice, rustic home,

0:29:010:29:04

you'd have it on the floor,

0:29:040:29:05

you could use it to put sort of fruit in,

0:29:050:29:07

all that sort of thing. Really nice thing. Mm-hm.

0:29:070:29:10

However, I don't think it's that old, Anita.

0:29:100:29:12

I'm saying it's worth about ?20 or ?30.

0:29:120:29:14

20 to 30.

0:29:140:29:16

Well, they paid 25,

0:29:160:29:17

so there's a wee chance... OK. ..that they might make a profit.

0:29:170:29:20

Yep. Now, we have two gusty lads and lads like a good pair of legs.

0:29:200:29:27

What do you think of this pair of legs?

0:29:270:29:30

Well, I'm lost for words, actually.

0:29:300:29:32

THEY LAUGH

0:29:320:29:33

Again, not old, is it?

0:29:330:29:35

You know, these are new, so really,

0:29:350:29:37

very much a decorator's item again, and I...

0:29:370:29:40

I think, really, I said these are worth around about ?30-?60.

0:29:400:29:44

Well, that's not too bad, they paid ?60.

0:29:440:29:47

Oh, right, OK. So they may have a chance. OK.

0:29:470:29:50

The third item is this Guinness money bank.

0:29:500:29:54

Guinness memorabilia is collectable, particularly the Carlton Ware.

0:29:540:29:59

We see lots of that, the toucans, I'm sure everybody's seen those.

0:29:590:30:03

I'm thinking about 20 to 40 on this one.

0:30:030:30:05

20 to 40. Now, they paid ?50 on that.

0:30:050:30:07

Oh, did they? Uh-huh, yeah.

0:30:070:30:09

So... Debatable, OK. ..that could be a wee bit tricky. Yeah.

0:30:090:30:15

In which case, they might need their bonus buy.

0:30:150:30:19

Isaac, Ben, you left Caroline a magnificent ?165.

0:30:200:30:28

Caroline, reveal what you bought!

0:30:280:30:31

Well, I went out and bought the most beautiful thing I could find.

0:30:310:30:35

What? Excuse me! There's more!

0:30:360:30:39

Oh, wow! That is really pretty! Rather beautiful.

0:30:420:30:46

Cultured pearls from the 1920s, I would think,

0:30:460:30:50

and you can see they're all knotted between the pearls...

0:30:500:30:53

Hand-strung. Yeah, which is a really good sign of quality

0:30:530:30:57

and the clasp is 9-carat white gold... Whoa!

0:30:570:31:01

..with a tiny, little diamond. Just beautiful!

0:31:010:31:04

So, how much did you pay for it?

0:31:040:31:07

I paid 40.

0:31:070:31:08

And I think, for the quality, I think that's for nothing.

0:31:080:31:12

How much do you think that it'll make at auction?

0:31:120:31:14

Well, I would hope ?70, ?80.

0:31:140:31:17

Brilliant! Man, I'll take that. I'm happy with that.

0:31:170:31:19

You don't need to make up your mind just now.

0:31:190:31:22

Wait until your first three items have been sold, but right now,

0:31:220:31:25

let's see what the auctioneer thinks about Caroline's exquisite pearls.

0:31:250:31:31

Do you like them?

0:31:330:31:34

Well, you and I have been brought many a string of pearls

0:31:340:31:39

and they have been fake.

0:31:390:31:40

We can tell immediately by the lustre.

0:31:400:31:42

They are pearls.

0:31:420:31:44

Always have a good look at the clasp because, of course,

0:31:440:31:47

some of the clasps on these can be really good.

0:31:470:31:50

I'm looking at this and I'm thinking about ?50-?80.

0:31:500:31:53

I think they're quite nice. 50 to 80. Mm-hm.

0:31:530:31:56

Excellent! Because she only paid ?40.

0:31:560:31:59

Well done, her. So, that's it for the Reds. Yep.

0:31:590:32:02

Let's go onto the Blues, Becky and Karen. Yep.

0:32:020:32:06

Two exotic birds...

0:32:060:32:07

HE LAUGHS

0:32:070:32:08

..and they bought these two exotic birds here.

0:32:080:32:10

Well, as I was walking through the saleroom earlier on,

0:32:100:32:13

there were two people that really liked the look of them.

0:32:130:32:16

"We collect these," they said. Mm-hm.

0:32:160:32:18

So we might be in with a chance on them after all, you know.

0:32:180:32:21

What was your estimate? 20 to 40.

0:32:210:32:23

They've paid ?40. Did they?

0:32:230:32:25

They could give us a wee surprise. Who knows?

0:32:250:32:29

Second item... Yep. ..a lot more traditional item,

0:32:290:32:32

is the ostrich-feather fan.

0:32:320:32:35

This is very small and, of course, the sticks are made out of plastic.

0:32:350:32:40

Not quite the same thing. It's a mother-of-pearl look.

0:32:400:32:43

Yeah, exactly, so I've said, modestly, ?20-?30 on that.

0:32:430:32:48

Well, that's not too bad because they paid 19...

0:32:480:32:51

Oh, right, OK. ..for that.

0:32:510:32:53

Our third item is this Art Nouveau belt, white metal,

0:32:530:32:59

but it has these beautiful links

0:32:590:33:01

and this lovely portrait of a young female figure on the clasp.

0:33:010:33:06

Do you like it? I love this.

0:33:060:33:08

I think the casting is absolutely super, I love the links.

0:33:080:33:12

Everything about it is just right, it's a lovely thing.

0:33:120:33:15

I've put ?50-?80 on it.

0:33:150:33:17

Well, they paid ?65, so...

0:33:170:33:19

Did they? Hm. ..they may make a profit on that.

0:33:190:33:22

Yeah, no, I think that's all right, actually.

0:33:220:33:24

I like it, it's a good thing.

0:33:240:33:26

So, our mum and daughter may or may not need their bonus buy,

0:33:260:33:30

but we're going to go and have a look at it anyway.

0:33:300:33:32

Becky, Karen, you gave our Philip ?176.

0:33:340:33:39

Philip, what did you buy with the money?

0:33:390:33:43

Well, I walked round the fair

0:33:430:33:45

and you are girlie girlies and I met this really lovely girl...

0:33:450:33:50

and, on the way here, well, she lost her head, really.

0:33:500:33:53

Oh, dear!

0:33:560:33:58

She was a very girlie girl and she's a figure...

0:33:580:34:01

modelled by Ruth Van Ruyckevelt for the Worcester porcelain factory

0:34:010:34:05

and it's from a limited edition of Victorian figure ladies

0:34:050:34:08

and I paid ?50 for her.

0:34:080:34:11

What actually happened was that, on the way here...

0:34:110:34:15

she got broken.

0:34:150:34:17

She would have been really nice, but...

0:34:170:34:20

She was really pretty.

0:34:200:34:23

What we do now?

0:34:230:34:25

Well, this is a very unusual occurrence and, in this case,

0:34:250:34:30

we're going to go to our auctioneer and seek his advice.

0:34:300:34:34

This is Philip's bonus buy.

0:34:360:34:38

It's a Worcester figure and, unfortunately,

0:34:380:34:41

it has been damaged in transit.

0:34:410:34:43

Robert, what we going to do with that?

0:34:430:34:46

Well, it's a tragedy, isn't it?

0:34:460:34:47

And, clearly, we can't sell it now, which is awful.

0:34:470:34:51

All I'd say is that if it were in perfect condition,

0:34:510:34:54

my estimate on this would be ?30-?50.

0:34:540:34:58

So, what I would like to do

0:34:580:35:00

in the difficult situation that we are placed in,

0:35:000:35:04

is to say that we would pay out ?50, top estimate,

0:35:040:35:08

as if it were an insurance valuation and see if that's acceptable.

0:35:080:35:13

Well, that sounds very fair, Robert. I'll have a wee chat with the team

0:35:130:35:17

about it and they can make their decision on it.

0:35:170:35:21

You're our auctioneer today? I am.

0:35:210:35:23

Well, I'm looking forward to that.

0:35:230:35:25

At ?20, the bid is there.

0:35:250:35:27

?20, it's going to be sold.

0:35:270:35:29

At ?20, then, if you're all finished...

0:35:290:35:31

Are you excited? Very excited. Super excited. Pumped!

0:35:320:35:36

Ready. Excited. Excellent, excellent.

0:35:360:35:39

Have you been to an auction before? I have been to an auction before.

0:35:390:35:42

Never, I'm looking forward to this.

0:35:420:35:44

It's looking pretty good. Auction virgin. Yeah.

0:35:440:35:47

Well, your first item is that super big Asian bowl

0:35:470:35:50

and it's coming up right now.

0:35:500:35:53

20 anywhere now, do I hear quickly now?

0:35:530:35:55

20 is bid, quickly, 20, I have you,

0:35:550:35:57

at 20 I'm bid. 20 right away!

0:35:570:35:58

I'm bid at 20, and 5 anywhere now?

0:35:580:36:00

At ?20 only, it's in the corridor, ?20 only.

0:36:000:36:02

20 and 5 anywhere now?

0:36:020:36:04

At 20 only, then, at 20, all finished and done?

0:36:040:36:06

At 20 then...

0:36:060:36:08

?20.

0:36:080:36:09

?20. Oh.

0:36:090:36:11

Oh, dear. So, you're minus five on that lot.

0:36:110:36:15

Your next item, great pair of legs, boys!

0:36:150:36:18

20 anywhere now for this?

0:36:180:36:20

20 anywhere? Surely, do I hear for this, please, at 20?

0:36:200:36:22

There at ?20 only.

0:36:220:36:24

At 20, 20 do I hear?

0:36:240:36:25

At 20, at 20.

0:36:250:36:27

At ?20 only, 10 if you like.

0:36:270:36:29

Oh, boys! At ?10 now, do I hear?

0:36:290:36:30

It's only ?5 a leg, come on!

0:36:300:36:32

?10 anywhere now , do I hear?

0:36:320:36:34

At ?10 anywhere now?

0:36:340:36:35

At ?10 anywhere now?

0:36:350:36:36

10, I'm bid there. At 10, I have you at 10.

0:36:360:36:38

15 now, do I hear it?

0:36:380:36:40

10, the bid is there.

0:36:400:36:41

At ?10 only, at 10. AUCTIONEER DROWNS SPEECH

0:36:410:36:43

At ?10 only. Going to be sold at 10, on the front row.

0:36:430:36:46

?10, your bid. ?10!

0:36:460:36:49

Boys!

0:36:490:36:50

BEN: Gave us a hand up there.

0:36:500:36:52

That was minus ?50 on that lot,

0:36:520:36:55

which takes your total losses to minus 55.

0:36:550:37:00

Next lot's the money box and it's coming up right now.

0:37:000:37:04

?30 bid with me straightaway, at ?30 I have.

0:37:040:37:07

At 30 and 5 is now.

0:37:070:37:08

35, 40, 45, 50, 50 bid.

0:37:080:37:10

55? At ?50, my bid on commission.

0:37:100:37:12

At ?50 only, at 50.

0:37:120:37:14

And 5 now, do I hear? At ?50 only.

0:37:140:37:16

What does the internet say? Are you all out?

0:37:160:37:17

At 50, the bid's here with the auctioneer, then.

0:37:170:37:19

On commission at ?50 and will be sold, then.

0:37:190:37:22

50. ?50! Yes!

0:37:220:37:24

It still leaves you, boys, with minus ?55.

0:37:240:37:28

Bonus buy. You have to make up your mind.

0:37:280:37:31

Do you want to go with the bonus buy?

0:37:310:37:32

These lovely pearls. We've got no choice.

0:37:320:37:34

You say go for it? I'm saying go for it.

0:37:340:37:36

And these people obviously don't like ugly things. We trust you.

0:37:360:37:38

You're going to go for it, you're definitely going to go for it?

0:37:380:37:41

These people don't like ugly things, let's try something different.

0:37:410:37:43

Let's try... They're beautiful. Yeah.

0:37:430:37:45

Lot number 110.

0:37:450:37:47

50 on commission straightaway.

0:37:470:37:48

At ?50 I'm bid. 50 and 5 now.

0:37:480:37:50

Straight in at 50! These lovely pearls, come along now.

0:37:500:37:52

?50 I'm bid. At 50 and 5 now.

0:37:520:37:54

55 anywhere now?

0:37:540:37:56

At ?50, the bid's here with the auctioneer at 50 and 5 anywhere now?

0:37:560:37:59

At ?50 only, that's on commission, make no mistake.

0:37:590:38:02

At ?50 only, then.

0:38:020:38:04

All finished, at ?50 only. ?10 more.

0:38:040:38:06

?50, that's plus 10,

0:38:060:38:08

which takes you to an overall score of minus 45.

0:38:080:38:13

Don't be glum, don't be glum. No, quite happy with that.

0:38:130:38:16

Could be a winning score, boys. Seen worse.

0:38:160:38:18

I think it is a winning score. Oh, I love your confidence!

0:38:180:38:21

Yes, it could be a winning score.

0:38:210:38:23

The only thing is,

0:38:230:38:25

don't say anything to the Blues and don't give anything away.

0:38:250:38:29

No. Can we wink?

0:38:290:38:31

How are you feeling? A bit nervous. Oh, wee bit nervous!

0:38:360:38:40

Excited. No, we'll be fine, we'll be fine.

0:38:400:38:43

Confident in what we've got.

0:38:430:38:44

Well, your first item, your two exotic birds.

0:38:440:38:49

A bit like yourself, exotic birds,

0:38:490:38:51

and they're coming up right now.

0:38:510:38:54

And I have ?25 bid on them straightaway.

0:38:540:38:56

?25, the bid is with me at ?25. 30 is it now?

0:38:560:38:59

30 at the doorway. At 30, and 5 is it now?

0:38:590:39:01

35. 40, are you bidding now? Yes!

0:39:010:39:03

Yes? At ?35.

0:39:030:39:05

Your bid, ?35, ?35, the bid is there at ?35.

0:39:050:39:08

Are you all finished?

0:39:080:39:10

At ?35, then, being sold...

0:39:100:39:12

?35.

0:39:120:39:13

It's a wee, wee... Oh! We can bring that back. ..wee, tiny loss

0:39:130:39:16

of ?5 that you can make up easily. We can bring this back.

0:39:160:39:19

Your next item coming up, again, a girlie item, Phil,

0:39:190:39:23

is the ostrich-feather fan.

0:39:230:39:26

Now, you paid ?19 for that.

0:39:260:39:28

Who will give me ?20 for this?

0:39:280:39:30

?20 to start it off.

0:39:300:39:31

?20 now. Quickly now, at ?20 bid.

0:39:310:39:33

At 20, I have. 20 and 5 now? Yes!

0:39:330:39:35

20, the bid is there.

0:39:350:39:36

At ?20 only, at ?20.

0:39:360:39:38

At 20. Any more?

0:39:380:39:40

At ?20, ?20, all quiet.

0:39:400:39:41

At ?20, being sold, then.

0:39:410:39:44

?20.

0:39:440:39:45

Girls, ?20. You've made ?1!

0:39:450:39:47

My tactical move! You've made ?1! Which takes you to minus four,

0:39:470:39:51

which is not too bad at all.

0:39:510:39:53

Your next item coming up is that wonderful Art Nouveau belt.

0:39:530:39:58

?40 anywhere now for this?

0:39:580:40:00

At ?40, do I hear?

0:40:000:40:01

40. You shouldn't be hesitating.

0:40:010:40:02

?40 anywhere now?

0:40:020:40:03

It will have to be 20, then, won't it?

0:40:030:40:05

And I'm giving it away. At that 20 I'm bid.

0:40:050:40:07

Thank you. At ?20 I'm bid.

0:40:070:40:08

25 is it now?

0:40:080:40:09

At 20, the bid is there. 25, 25, 30 now?

0:40:090:40:12

30 bid. 35?

0:40:120:40:14

35 is there on the net? KAREN: Bit more.

0:40:140:40:15

ROBERT: At ?30, it's in the room,

0:40:150:40:17

it's here to be sold whatever happens.

0:40:170:40:19

At ?30. At ?30, the bid is there with you.

0:40:190:40:21

At 35, 40 now, 45.

0:40:210:40:23

45, is there, now, on the net.

0:40:230:40:25

45, you bidding?

0:40:250:40:26

At 45 is there now?

0:40:260:40:28

Your bid at ?40.

0:40:280:40:30

At ?40. I'm trying my heart out here.

0:40:300:40:32

At ?40 only, then, if you're all finished and done at 40,

0:40:320:40:34

going to be sold.

0:40:340:40:35

With you, ?40.

0:40:350:40:37

?40.

0:40:370:40:39

Minus 25 on that.

0:40:390:40:42

Girls, you're at minus ?29.

0:40:420:40:45

That's not too bad.

0:40:450:40:46

Obviously, we've got the issue with the bonus buy.

0:40:460:40:50

Now, the auctioneer will pay out at his top estimate,

0:40:500:40:54

which would be the insurance value.

0:40:540:40:57

Now, I'm not going to tell you at this point what it is.

0:40:570:41:01

Right.

0:41:010:41:02

And you have to make up your mind, are you going to go with that,

0:41:020:41:07

or are you not? It's up to you, girls.

0:41:070:41:10

Go for it. We may as well, we're already in the minus. Yes.

0:41:100:41:12

You'll go for it? Yeah. They will go for it.

0:41:120:41:15

Now, at this point,

0:41:150:41:17

I can tell you that the auctioneer's top estimate

0:41:170:41:21

was ?50, which was exactly... What I paid for it.

0:41:210:41:24

It was exactly what Philip has paid for it, so in the end...

0:41:240:41:30

We're the same. You're still the same.

0:41:300:41:32

You're at minus 29 and minus 29 is not too bad.

0:41:320:41:38

It's not. It may be a winning score.

0:41:380:41:42

But what I want to say to you girls is don't say a word to the Reds.

0:41:420:41:47

Well, teams, you were all wonderful,

0:41:530:41:56

you were all great fun,

0:41:560:41:58

you were all terrific sports, but I have to say,

0:41:580:42:03

that nobody is going home with any money.

0:42:030:42:08

Phew!

0:42:080:42:10

But we still have winners and we still have runners-up

0:42:100:42:15

and I have to say that today's runners up...

0:42:150:42:19

..are the Reds.

0:42:200:42:21

No!

0:42:210:42:23

Congratulations.

0:42:230:42:25

Now, you did not too badly,

0:42:250:42:27

but it was the legs that let you down.

0:42:270:42:30

Yeah. Anyway, you're coming out with minus 45,

0:42:300:42:35

but our winners today are the Blues with minus ?29.

0:42:350:42:43

Congratulations, girls.

0:42:430:42:45

Just small losses on things,

0:42:450:42:47

but your ostrich feather fan made the magnificent profit of ?1!

0:42:470:42:54

So, everyone, did you have a wonderful time?

0:42:550:42:57

Amazing. Really good time. Excellent.
