Today's Bargain Hunt comes from Cornwall and, believe it or not,

0:00:030:00:07

down here, the sport of wrestling has got all its own rules.

0:00:070:00:11

And what's more, they've been doing this for over 3,000 years.

0:00:110:00:15

It's played against the clock,

0:00:150:00:17

and it takes skill and determination.

0:00:170:00:20

And the most important piece of clothing is the distinctive jacket.

0:00:210:00:25

It's a bit like another game I know.

0:00:260:00:28

So come on, let's go Bargain Hunting.

0:00:300:00:33

Today's fair is at the Royal Cornwall Showground, near Wadebridge.

0:00:580:01:02

With hundreds of stalls, there's plenty to choose from here.

0:01:030:01:07

Our teams have £300 and one hour

0:01:080:01:11

to scour this fair for bargains,

0:01:110:01:13

but can they make a profit at auction?

0:01:130:01:15

Let's see what's coming up.

0:01:150:01:17

The Reds get personal...

0:01:190:01:21

How much are your legs, please?

0:01:210:01:23

THEY LAUGH

0:01:230:01:24

..the Blues get feisty...

0:01:270:01:29

He has a fiery look about him, hasn't he?

0:01:290:01:31

-A bit like you.

-Yes, absolutely.

0:01:310:01:33

THEY LAUGH

0:01:330:01:34

..and at the auction, there are highs...

0:01:350:01:38

-Yes!

-Profits.

0:01:380:01:40

..and lows.

0:01:400:01:42

Oh, my God.

0:01:420:01:43

Well, that's all for later.

0:01:430:01:46

Let's meet our teams,

0:01:460:01:47

because today, we've got two teams of very good friends.

0:01:470:01:50

For the Reds, we've got Mark and Mandy

0:01:500:01:53

and for the Blues we've got Anya and Jenny. Hello.

0:01:530:01:56

-ALL:

-Hello.

0:01:560:01:58

That's what I like. Starting with the Reds.

0:01:580:01:59

Now, Mandy, you trained as a veterinary nurse,

0:01:590:02:03

but apparently, you're now breeding dogs, is that right?

0:02:030:02:05

I breed and show Ibizan Hounds.

0:02:050:02:07

I've bred several that have won very well at Crufts,

0:02:070:02:10

-and I also have a champion.

-Really?

0:02:100:02:12

-Crufts itself, that's amazing.

-I have.

0:02:120:02:14

And there's a connection with dogs between you and Mark, yeah?

0:02:140:02:17

Mark's wife and myself met through dogs,

0:02:170:02:20

through the dog showing, and then that's how I met Mark.

0:02:200:02:23

You've got something of a nocturnal habit,

0:02:230:02:27

which takes some believing, so tell me.

0:02:270:02:29

I'm very well-known locally for sleepwalking.

0:02:290:02:33

I can leave the house, unlock the door, put my trainers on,

0:02:330:02:37

go for a little walk around the local area,

0:02:370:02:40

come back, unlock the house,

0:02:400:02:42

go back to bed, and my husband very often doesn't even wake up.

0:02:420:02:45

And there's no bag of swag underneath your bed when you wake up?

0:02:460:02:49

No, I've never done anything inappropriate.

0:02:490:02:51

You've never turned to cat burglary as an excuse?

0:02:510:02:53

No, not at all. No.

0:02:530:02:54

Mark, you're also a dog lover, obviously.

0:02:550:02:58

That's right, Eric, we've got salukis.

0:02:580:03:00

Oh, they're very sort of exotic.

0:03:000:03:02

Yeah, they're hunting dogs. Really lovely.

0:03:020:03:04

You see them on Art Deco figures, don't you?

0:03:040:03:06

-Women being dragged along.

-Yeah, those and borzois.

0:03:060:03:08

They've got that kind of look about them.

0:03:080:03:10

But you're also a bit of a collector.

0:03:100:03:11

Tell me what you collect.

0:03:110:03:13

I kind of like toys, really. I'm a bit of a kid at heart.

0:03:130:03:15

I've got a collection of a few Action Men,

0:03:150:03:17

range from the '60s into the '70s.

0:03:170:03:19

Are you an action man yourself?

0:03:190:03:21

Not really, no.

0:03:210:03:22

No, I used to be a bit more sporty, but not any more.

0:03:220:03:24

So, you two are obviously good friends,

0:03:240:03:26

and you've obviously been discussing tactics, what have you come up with?

0:03:260:03:29

We're going to try to buy as low as possible,

0:03:290:03:31

and sell for the maximum profit.

0:03:310:03:32

But the most important thing,

0:03:320:03:34

-gaining the golden gavel.

-The golden gavel.

0:03:340:03:36

It doesn't always work that way,

0:03:360:03:38

but in your case, I'm going to wish you good luck and hope that it does.

0:03:380:03:41

Thank you. Thank you.

0:03:410:03:42

I turn my attention to the Blues.

0:03:420:03:44

I need to know, Anya, how did you two meet?

0:03:440:03:46

I've got a couple of horses,

0:03:460:03:48

and Jenny decided to ride one of them, so that's how we met.

0:03:480:03:51

How many horses have you got?

0:03:510:03:52

-Three.

-Three.

0:03:520:03:53

-Three. One's 30.

-Yeah?

0:03:530:03:56

One's six, and one's 12.

0:03:560:03:58

So, what is it about horses that have you so, dare I

0:03:580:04:02

say, sort of impassioned, is that the word?

0:04:020:04:04

Yes, it is, actually.

0:04:040:04:05

They're very independent, they have a brain,

0:04:050:04:09

as my husband rides motorbikes and he controls the motorbike,

0:04:090:04:12

the horse controls me in a way.

0:04:120:04:14

They are a very beautiful animal when you're close-up.

0:04:140:04:17

-Oh, they certainly are.

-Especially close up.

0:04:170:04:18

-Definitely.

-Jenny, you're a bit of a multitasker, aren't you?

-Yes.

0:04:180:04:22

-Not only are you a gardener, you're a tree surgeon.

-Yes.

0:04:220:04:25

And you also have what might be described as

0:04:250:04:27

a somewhat dangerous pastime.

0:04:270:04:30

Yes.

0:04:300:04:31

-Rodeo riding.

-Rodeo...

0:04:310:04:33

-Seriously?

-Yes.

0:04:330:04:34

On a real horse? Not one of those...

0:04:340:04:37

No, no, the real thing.

0:04:370:04:38

Now, that strikes me as being something of a dangerous occupation.

0:04:380:04:41

Yes, it is dangerous. It's...

0:04:410:04:43

After breaking a few ribs and a few broken arms,

0:04:430:04:47

you kind of learn how to roll when you fall,

0:04:470:04:49

and once you learn how to roll,

0:04:490:04:51

you just roll up and bounce straight back on again, it's great fun.

0:04:510:04:54

I think I'll stick to donkey derbies.

0:04:540:04:56

Yes, I think you'll be safer.

0:04:560:04:58

So, you two are obviously good friends,

0:04:590:05:01

so what have you come up with for your tactics?

0:05:010:05:03

Basically, to buy as cheap as possible, ruthlessly low,

0:05:030:05:08

and get a good price for it, because we want the golden gavel.

0:05:080:05:11

You do!

0:05:110:05:13

-I wish you both luck as well.

-Thank you.

0:05:130:05:15

If you're going to come good with your tactics, teams,

0:05:150:05:18

you're going to need some money.

0:05:180:05:19

-So, £300 for you.

-Thank you.

0:05:190:05:22

-£300 for yourselves.

-Thank you very much.

0:05:220:05:24

Off you go and meet your experts.

0:05:240:05:25

-Thank you!

-OK.

0:05:250:05:27

Well, I think we've got some real competition on our hands today.

0:05:270:05:30

I just hope there's no horsing around.

0:05:300:05:32

We've lined up a couple of very talented experts for our teams.

0:05:340:05:38

She's at of the top of her game.

0:05:380:05:39

For the Red team, it's Caroline Hawley.

0:05:390:05:42

And he's a giant of the antiques world.

0:05:430:05:46

For the Blues, it's Ben Cooper.

0:05:460:05:48

So, Mark, what are you looking for today?

0:05:490:05:51

-Well, Caroline, I'm really looking for some toys.

-Yeah?

0:05:510:05:53

If I'm not lucky on that front, I'll probably go for

0:05:530:05:55

some interesting glassware, or something like that.

0:05:550:05:58

Looking for something that jumps out in front of me.

0:05:580:06:02

And what about you?

0:06:020:06:04

Some pretty jewellery,

0:06:040:06:05

or possibly something very nice made out of wood.

0:06:050:06:08

-Anya?

-Art Deco.

0:06:080:06:10

I adore Art Deco.

0:06:100:06:11

ENGINE REVS

0:06:110:06:12

You're under starter's orders, teams,

0:06:120:06:14

because your 60 minutes starts now. BUZZER

0:06:140:06:17

-Shall we go shopping?

-Yes.

-Yes.

-Come on.

0:06:170:06:20

-Shall we go?

-OK.

0:06:200:06:21

These teams have quite some shopping lists,

0:06:210:06:23

but there's a great mix of objects on offer,

0:06:230:06:25

so let's get started.

0:06:250:06:27

And it looks like something has leapt out at the Blues already.

0:06:270:06:31

Just there. Those horses. Please.

0:06:320:06:34

Let's have a look. These are the leather ones, aren't they?

0:06:340:06:37

They're with an antiqued leather.

0:06:370:06:38

They're not new.

0:06:380:06:39

You can see how the leather has aged a little on the side.

0:06:390:06:42

How old would you say they were?

0:06:420:06:43

I'd have thought something in the last 20, 30 years.

0:06:430:06:46

They could well be Spanish.

0:06:460:06:48

Spaniards love their horses,

0:06:480:06:49

and they're well-known for their leather-making.

0:06:490:06:52

So I'd have thought they were made as a sort of, you know,

0:06:520:06:54

decorative, touristy kind of item.

0:06:540:06:56

What do you think?

0:06:560:06:58

Don't like that one, don't like his face.

0:06:580:07:00

I do like that one. He's got a fiery look about him, hasn't he?

0:07:000:07:02

-A bit like you.

-Yes, absolutely.

0:07:020:07:04

THEY LAUGH

0:07:040:07:06

So, Anya, you're looking more perplexed.

0:07:060:07:09

Yeah, I am, actually. Now I've seen them...

0:07:090:07:11

-No?

-No. No.

0:07:110:07:13

Definitely not.

0:07:130:07:14

May I make an offer?

0:07:140:07:16

-Yes.

-Yeah.

0:07:160:07:17

£15.

0:07:170:07:18

I'll take 18.

0:07:180:07:20

-16.

-16, go on, then.

0:07:200:07:23

-OK, done.

-Well, there you go, that was quick.

0:07:230:07:26

-You want that one?

-Yeah.

-All right.

0:07:260:07:27

-She just bought it.

-She's just bought it, hasn't she?

0:07:270:07:29

Yes, she did. You'd better shake the gentleman's hand.

0:07:290:07:32

-Thank you very much.

-Thank you.

0:07:320:07:33

-Thank you.

-I didn't even know she'd bought it!

0:07:330:07:35

THEY LAUGH

0:07:350:07:37

Anya, I think it's time, for the next one,

0:07:370:07:39

-for you to take a bit of control.

-I think I'd better!

0:07:390:07:41

-Otherwise we'll be done...

-In two minutes.

-Well, in ten minutes.

0:07:410:07:43

-Yeah, exactly.

-There we go.

0:07:430:07:45

Right, anyway, let's head off.

0:07:450:07:46

We've still got around about 59 and a half minutes to go.

0:07:460:07:49

OK.

0:07:490:07:50

And they're off.

0:07:500:07:52

Well, that's one way to shop.

0:07:520:07:54

Jenny is galloping away,

0:07:540:07:56

and it seems the Reds are getting a bit cheeky.

0:07:560:07:59

How much are your legs, please?

0:07:590:08:00

THEY LAUGH

0:08:000:08:02

Sorry, sorry. Shall I reword that?

0:08:020:08:05

Shall I reword that slightly?

0:08:050:08:07

How much are these legs, please?

0:08:070:08:09

£100.

0:08:090:08:10

£100.

0:08:100:08:12

What's it made of? What're they made of?

0:08:120:08:13

Gold.

0:08:130:08:15

THEY LAUGH

0:08:150:08:16

1930s table, taken apart, top and bottom,

0:08:160:08:21

and just a pair of mannequin legs.

0:08:210:08:23

I think £100 is, probably, I don't know what you think,

0:08:230:08:25

-I think it's a little bit...

-It's a bit too much.

0:08:250:08:27

Although it's nice, I like it, I think it's interesting,

0:08:270:08:29

but I think at that sort of price...

0:08:290:08:30

-£70.

-All right.

0:08:300:08:32

I think we might think about it at 70.

0:08:350:08:37

And if no-one's going to take it away immediately...

0:08:370:08:39

..I think it's worth, is it worth thinking about?

0:08:400:08:42

Yeah, of course it is.

0:08:420:08:44

-All right.

-Thank you.

-Thank you very much.

0:08:440:08:45

Let's move on and see what we can see now.

0:08:450:08:48

They are impressive legs, but don't put your feet up, Reds.

0:08:480:08:51

Meanwhile, the Blues are still racing around the showground.

0:08:510:08:55

-Come on, then.

-Oh, off we go.

0:08:560:08:57

-Right.

-She's on a mission.

0:08:570:08:59

-What about...?

-Oh.

-What's...?

0:09:000:09:02

-Something's caught her eye.

-What about that one, Jen?

0:09:020:09:04

-It's quite nice.

-It's nice, isn't it?

0:09:040:09:06

-Ben?

-That is a nice lamp.

0:09:060:09:09

You like Art Deco?

0:09:090:09:10

Yes, I definitely do.

0:09:100:09:11

-It's certainly an Art Deco base to this.

-What's the price?

0:09:110:09:14

It's £135.

0:09:140:09:15

-Certainly wouldn't pay that for it, but never mind.

-Mm.

0:09:150:09:18

Different green, though, isn't it?

0:09:180:09:19

That's the trouble.

0:09:190:09:21

It is a slightly different green, but it is a very elegant lamp.

0:09:210:09:24

-It looks like it's been rewired for modern usage.

-Yes.

0:09:240:09:27

And the way she's done...

0:09:270:09:28

I think she looks beautiful, actually. She does look beautiful, doesn't she?

0:09:280:09:32

-And looking at the light fittings...

-I wouldn't quite say beautiful.

0:09:320:09:34

I didn't like your horse, but you bought it.

0:09:340:09:36

Well, actually, I'm not telling you not to buy it.

0:09:360:09:39

No, I know you're not.

0:09:390:09:40

-Do you want to ask for the best price...?

-I will actually.

0:09:400:09:42

-You're going to have to get the price down dramatically.

-I will.

0:09:420:09:45

Cos that's not going to make that at auction.

0:09:450:09:47

No, no, no. If it doesn't do half-price,

0:09:470:09:49

-then we'll look for something else.

-Less than half price.

0:09:490:09:51

-Have a word.

-Yeah.

-It's your turn, Anya.

-OK.

0:09:510:09:53

Go and see the gentleman and see what he says.

0:09:530:09:55

OK, thank you.

0:09:550:09:56

So, Jenny, do you think her haggling skills

0:09:560:09:58

-are going to be anywhere near a patch of yours?

-No.

0:09:580:10:00

-No?

-No.

0:10:000:10:01

She's not as bold as I am.

0:10:010:10:03

But it's her turn.

0:10:030:10:05

It's her turn, though, no, I want her to have a go.

0:10:050:10:07

-This is what it's all about.

-Oh, she's coming back.

0:10:070:10:09

Yeah, slight disappointment.

0:10:090:10:10

-Yes?

-£100.

0:10:100:10:12

-No.

-No?

-No.

0:10:120:10:13

-Well, actually, this is your deal.

-We can always come back.

0:10:130:10:16

We can always come back, we know where it is.

0:10:160:10:17

And if we're running out of time at the end,

0:10:170:10:19

we can always have another chat with the dealer,

0:10:190:10:21

see if he's got any more movement in the price.

0:10:210:10:23

But I think we should head off.

0:10:230:10:24

He's a very wise man.

0:10:240:10:26

So, let's see if anything has caught the eye of the Reds yet.

0:10:260:10:29

Look at the telephone table, there.

0:10:290:10:32

-I mean, that is so...

-Oh, yeah.

0:10:320:10:34

-Horrible.

-...mid-century... Well, or mid-century modern.

0:10:340:10:37

To be fair, I like the telephone on the top.

0:10:370:10:39

-The table, I'm not so struck on.

-No?

0:10:390:10:42

-Guys?

-Yeah?

-I don't want to worry you,

0:10:420:10:44

but apart from the legs, there's nothing...

0:10:440:10:47

Nothing that's really exciting us.

0:10:470:10:48

-No.

-No.

-No, not so far.

-So we need to get a lick on.

0:10:480:10:51

-Yeah, yeah, OK.

-Chop, chop!

-You're definitely right.

0:10:510:10:53

Ooh, say that again, nobody ever said I was definitely right.

0:10:530:10:56

-You're definitely right, Caroline.

-You'll have to tell my husband that.

0:10:560:10:59

I always agree with Caroline, and she's definitely right.

0:10:590:11:02

The Reds need to get a move on, as we are 20 minutes in.

0:11:020:11:06

But it looks like the Blues have spotted something nautical.

0:11:060:11:09

-Do they function?

-The thing is, though,

0:11:110:11:13

I'm sure these will almost certainly be well out of the price bracket.

0:11:130:11:17

-£380.

-No, no, no. No way.

0:11:170:11:18

-Yeah.

-Moving on. Moving on.

-THEY LAUGH

0:11:180:11:21

At £380, it's too expensive, so they're not hanging around.

0:11:240:11:29

The Reds are trying their luck indoors,

0:11:290:11:32

and they're onto something straightaway.

0:11:320:11:34

-Ooh.

-Oh.

0:11:340:11:36

Now, are those the sorts of thing you like?

0:11:360:11:38

-Yes.

-Yeah?

-They are. Soda siphons, yeah.

0:11:380:11:40

They look nice displayed like that, don't they?

0:11:400:11:43

They look good.

0:11:430:11:44

£48 on them.

0:11:440:11:46

Oh, yeah?

0:11:460:11:48

-Yeah.

-Says half a dozen.

0:11:480:11:50

And I think for that, we could get him down a bit,

0:11:500:11:52

if that's for the whole lot.

0:11:520:11:54

-Is that something to ask about?

-Maybe, maybe...

0:11:540:11:57

Maybe we'll stroll back, I think maybe we do the zig-ziggy-zigzag.

0:11:570:12:00

-Ziggy-zigzag.

-Yeah, OK.

0:12:000:12:02

Ziggy-zigzag is a new term for scanning more stalls,

0:12:020:12:05

so off they go.

0:12:050:12:07

Meanwhile, the Blues have found something rather intriguing.

0:12:070:12:10

Oh, look at this!

0:12:110:12:13

-What's that?

-Medical.

0:12:130:12:14

Surgical instruments are a world of their own.

0:12:140:12:16

There are specific collectors for them.

0:12:160:12:19

It always amazes me, the money that they command.

0:12:190:12:23

-How old are they?

-I would have thought, from looking at the box,

0:12:230:12:26

earlier part of the 20th century.

0:12:260:12:28

And what's the price?

0:12:280:12:30

-75.

-75.

0:12:300:12:31

But what's it used for, though?

0:12:310:12:32

I'm not quite sure what they were for.

0:12:320:12:34

It kind of worries me.

0:12:350:12:37

Do you have an idea? No, I don't want to know your idea.

0:12:370:12:40

-No, you don't want to know.

-Excuse me.

0:12:400:12:42

You don't know what they are, yourself?

0:12:420:12:44

-For...dealing with men?

-Yes.

0:12:440:12:47

-No way!

-Oh, no!

-Think so, yes.

0:12:470:12:49

Oh, wow!

0:12:490:12:51

I think the technical term is urethral dilators, Ben.

0:12:510:12:55

Anyway. I'm slightly lost for words at that.

0:12:550:12:59

But they are a lovely bit of medical scientific engineering.

0:12:590:13:04

It wouldn't be a collectors' piece, wouldn't it?

0:13:040:13:05

You have to... There are collectors.

0:13:050:13:07

I mean, I've seen scientific and medical instruments

0:13:070:13:10

make a lot of money.

0:13:100:13:12

-I mean, it is nice.

-It is actually very nice.

0:13:120:13:14

Obviously, the box says,

0:13:140:13:15

"Walter Lawley, surgical equipment maker in London."

0:13:150:13:19

And each item is stamped Walter Lawley.

0:13:190:13:22

So they are all there.

0:13:220:13:24

-They're genuine.

-How much would they make in an auction?

0:13:240:13:26

Probably an auctioneer would put quite a wide estimate on them,

0:13:260:13:29

so it could be a sort of £30 to £60 kind of thing.

0:13:290:13:31

Ah.

0:13:320:13:34

Would you take £20 for them?

0:13:340:13:35

No, I can't. I could do £50.

0:13:350:13:37

OK, what about £40?

0:13:370:13:39

You might as well, cos you don't know what they're used for.

0:13:390:13:41

So you could be buying something that you don't even know

0:13:420:13:45

-what they are.

-I could go £45.

0:13:450:13:47

£42.

0:13:470:13:49

-Deal.

-Lovely, thank you.

-Thank you.

0:13:490:13:51

We went for quite a bit, then, didn't we, really?

0:13:510:13:54

You both have this habit, we're just talking,

0:13:540:13:56

and then you start diving in for offers.

0:13:560:13:59

-Anyway, you bought it.

-Now, do you think that's a good buy, though?

0:13:590:14:02

It's one of these sort of unknowns.

0:14:020:14:04

I reckon it should wash its face and hopefully make a bit.

0:14:040:14:08

What do you think?

0:14:080:14:10

-Pot luck, really.

-Pot luck, isn't it?

-Yeah, it's pot luck.

0:14:100:14:13

But while both teams continue searching,

0:14:140:14:16

I've been having a bit of a browse myself,

0:14:160:14:19

and I've found something that is Cornish through-and-through.

0:14:190:14:22

Now, this is a fantastic collection of Newlyn Copper.

0:14:230:14:27

You've got all manner of objects being made.

0:14:270:14:30

You've got a chamber stick, you've got rose bowls,

0:14:300:14:33

you've got trays,

0:14:330:14:34

you've got a lovely inkwell and cover.

0:14:340:14:37

And it all goes back to the year 1890.

0:14:370:14:41

At that time, the fishing industry in this part of the world

0:14:410:14:45

was having a difficult time.

0:14:450:14:46

Especially in the winter, when the fleet couldn't put out to sea.

0:14:460:14:51

So you found yourself with an awful lot of fishermen

0:14:510:14:54

with absolutely no income.

0:14:540:14:56

Along comes a man called John Drew Mackenzie, an artist.

0:14:560:15:00

And the idea was basically to train local fishermen to work with copper

0:15:000:15:05

and to make useful and decorative items

0:15:050:15:08

that they could then sell,

0:15:080:15:09

and therefore make themselves an income.

0:15:090:15:12

Now, Mackenzie wanted to follow the principles

0:15:120:15:15

of the arts & craft movement that was prevalent at that time,

0:15:150:15:18

and that believed in handmade objects.

0:15:180:15:21

Objects of quality.

0:15:210:15:23

And this particular inkwell sports beautiful hinges.

0:15:230:15:27

Wonderful decoration.

0:15:270:15:29

Some of the early pieces didn't carry a stamp mark,

0:15:290:15:31

they would often just carry a paper label

0:15:310:15:34

signed by the coppersmith responsible.

0:15:340:15:37

But if you are out there collecting,

0:15:370:15:39

you do need to really look for a stamp mark.

0:15:390:15:42

And unlike a lot of other people involved in metalwork,

0:15:420:15:46

they didn't put their stamp on the reverse of that piece,

0:15:460:15:49

they were very proud to show it on top of the piece,

0:15:490:15:52

as you can see here.

0:15:520:15:54

Now, the work is primarily using a technique called repousse work,

0:15:540:15:58

and that involves hammering out a design on the reverse,

0:15:580:16:03

which is normally laid on top of a soft metal

0:16:030:16:06

that obviously gave way when the piece was being hammered out.

0:16:060:16:10

The end result is a wonderful design like this.

0:16:100:16:14

They specialised in fish.

0:16:140:16:15

Sometimes they're quite mythical, sometimes they're quite comical,

0:16:150:16:20

and sometimes they're quite correct.

0:16:200:16:23

And Newlyn copper has become highly desirable,

0:16:230:16:26

and consequently very collectable.

0:16:260:16:29

So when it comes to the prices of Newlyn copper,

0:16:290:16:31

what might you be expected to pay?

0:16:310:16:33

Well, for a little dish like this with a single fish, £195.

0:16:330:16:37

The fish are getting bigger and so are the prices,

0:16:370:16:39

that's £350.

0:16:390:16:41

But should you want an inkwell, then the chances are

0:16:410:16:44

you're going to be paying the best part of £450.

0:16:440:16:48

But the important thing to remember

0:16:480:16:49

is that you're not just buying a piece of copper,

0:16:490:16:52

you're actually buying an important part of Cornish social history.

0:16:520:16:56

Time to get back to our teams.

0:16:580:17:00

They're over halfway through,

0:17:000:17:01

and the Blues have raced ahead with two items.

0:17:010:17:04

These two are quite extraordinary.

0:17:050:17:08

They dive in, look at something,

0:17:080:17:10

and in the middle of you discussing it,

0:17:100:17:12

one goes off and buys it, the other one goes, "Oh!"

0:17:120:17:14

And so, they're both quite happy about it.

0:17:140:17:17

But there's not exactly team work, at the moment.

0:17:170:17:20

They just fire from the hip.

0:17:200:17:22

But the relaxed Reds haven't found a thing.

0:17:220:17:25

Gosh, Mark and Mandy,

0:17:250:17:27

I thought that they would be really decisive

0:17:270:17:29

and buy things straightaway.

0:17:290:17:31

But no.

0:17:310:17:32

No, no, no. They haven't bought one thing.

0:17:320:17:35

We need to step on it.

0:17:360:17:37

-Yeah, OK.

-OK.

0:17:370:17:39

-OK?

-Yeah.

0:17:390:17:41

And it looks like the Blues now have Ben running around.

0:17:410:17:44

-Where are you running to?

-We're going to try inside.

0:17:440:17:47

You're going to try inside?

0:17:470:17:48

-Yeah, because...

-Anya would like to have a look inside.

0:17:480:17:50

-We've got a bit of money, so...

-You wanted to buy... Right?

0:17:500:17:53

Something with, like, a wow factor.

0:17:530:17:54

The wow factor sounds good to me,

0:17:560:17:57

but have the Reds found anything yet?

0:17:570:17:59

Please say yes!

0:17:590:18:00

Just look at these.

0:18:020:18:04

I mean, these used to be...

0:18:040:18:06

-..£80.

-Yeah.

0:18:070:18:08

£90.

0:18:080:18:10

-They've got a pusher, there.

-OK, all right.

0:18:100:18:12

Do you know what that's for?

0:18:120:18:13

-To push the candle up?

-Yeah.

0:18:130:18:15

-So as it winds down, you can push it...

-Yeah, yeah.

0:18:150:18:17

-Has that got it as well?

-Yeah.

-Yeah, yeah.

0:18:170:18:19

Now, I think these are absolutely for nothing at £10.

0:18:190:18:23

-Yeah.

-If they were £8, they'd be even better.

0:18:230:18:25

Well, I just think they are so cheap, it almost annoys me.

0:18:250:18:29

Yeah, yeah.

0:18:290:18:31

And the reason people don't want them

0:18:310:18:33

-is cos they can't be bothered to polish them.

-Yeah.

-But these...

0:18:330:18:36

These are already polished.

0:18:360:18:38

-Well, they are, but they'd come up even better.

-Yes.

0:18:380:18:40

I honestly think at ten quid, or probably less, you can't walk away.

0:18:400:18:45

-I do. I like... The thing is I actually like them, as well.

-Yeah.

0:18:450:18:48

So they're £10.

0:18:480:18:50

Is that the best price?

0:18:500:18:51

I could probably help you a little bit.

0:18:510:18:53

I could probably knock off... I could do them at £7, probably.

0:18:530:18:55

-Seven?

-Yeah.

-Sounds good to me.

-Excellent.

0:18:550:18:58

-Thank you very much.

-Thank you.

0:18:580:19:00

It's a deal! Wow, your first buy!

0:19:000:19:03

Yes!

0:19:030:19:04

What a relief.

0:19:040:19:06

With 39 minutes on the clock, they have item one.

0:19:060:19:09

Now, what do the Blues have in mind for their wow factor purchase?

0:19:090:19:13

It's what kind of jumps out in front of me.

0:19:130:19:16

-Yeah, so...

-Something is going to jump out in front of me in a minute,

0:19:160:19:18

I'm sure it will.

0:19:180:19:19

Can they find something that will leap out at them?

0:19:190:19:22

Meanwhile, what have the Reds spotted?

0:19:220:19:25

Ooh, do you do a bit of baking, Mark?

0:19:250:19:27

-I do, actually, I like it.

-Do you?

0:19:270:19:29

Yes, I do. And I think that looks like a penguin,

0:19:290:19:32

and I know Mandy loves penguins.

0:19:320:19:34

-Oh, look at that.

-Mandy, do you collect penguins?

0:19:340:19:36

I do. I have 3,000 penguins.

0:19:360:19:39

-3,000?

-She has 3,000.

0:19:390:19:41

-Are you joking?

-No, no.

-Not real, not real.

0:19:410:19:43

Like, everything you can imagine as a penguin.

0:19:430:19:45

-3,000?!

-Yeah, 3,000 of them.

0:19:450:19:47

-That...

-That's so cute.

0:19:470:19:48

-That looks from the 1960s.

-I think so.

0:19:480:19:51

And it's got the little recipe for the cookies underneath,

0:19:510:19:55

all in ounces.

0:19:550:19:57

-Isn't that cute?

-Gorgeous.

-I love it.

-Well spotted, Mark.

0:19:570:20:01

Look at that, it's even got the original four and 11.

0:20:010:20:04

-Lovely.

-How much is that in new money, four and 11?

0:20:040:20:08

-I don't know.

-I don't know.

-Oh, I really like those.

0:20:080:20:10

It's about 60p, team.

0:20:100:20:12

There's £8 pounds on the bottom.

0:20:120:20:14

-Do you want me to go and see the stall owner?

-Yes, please.

0:20:140:20:16

-Do you want me to go and buy them?

-Yes, please.

-I will, thank you.

0:20:160:20:19

Those cutters have caused temperatures to rise,

0:20:190:20:22

so while Caroline goes off to do the deal,

0:20:220:20:25

the Blues are back outside.

0:20:250:20:27

Has anything stirred their interest?

0:20:270:20:29

You see those spoons, Jenny?

0:20:290:20:30

-Those big spoons.

-These spoons here?

0:20:300:20:32

Are they silver?

0:20:320:20:34

Those look as if they'll all be silver.

0:20:340:20:36

The very large ones are called a basting spoon.

0:20:360:20:38

So, they're for basting.

0:20:380:20:39

Would they be individual, or would that be a set?

0:20:390:20:42

They'd be individual. You might have pairs.

0:20:420:20:44

You don't get sets of them.

0:20:440:20:46

Are you interested in looking at something like that?

0:20:460:20:48

-No, not really.

-No.

0:20:480:20:49

What are you interested in looking at?

0:20:510:20:53

-Not spoons.

-Not spoons.

-No.

0:20:530:20:55

Ben, these girls bought urethral dilators.

0:20:550:20:58

They're not impressed by spoons.

0:20:580:21:00

Meanwhile, what is the news on the cookie cutters?

0:21:000:21:04

So, they'll do it for a fiver.

0:21:040:21:05

Will you accept that?

0:21:050:21:06

-Yes.

-Yes, definitely.

0:21:060:21:08

Yes! Second item bought! Woohoo!

0:21:080:21:10

We're in there.

0:21:100:21:11

That's a lot of excitement over a set of cookie cutters.

0:21:110:21:15

But they've finally caught up.

0:21:150:21:17

With 20 minutes to go,

0:21:170:21:18

both teams now have two items

0:21:180:21:20

and are on the home straight.

0:21:200:21:21

And have the Blues finally found something they both agree on?

0:21:210:21:25

Oh, look, that's pretty.

0:21:250:21:27

-I like that.

-That's quite nice, yes.

0:21:270:21:28

I don't mind that. That's OK.

0:21:280:21:30

What sort of price is that?

0:21:300:21:31

Don't know, I can't see.

0:21:310:21:32

How much have you got on your condiments set?

0:21:330:21:36

-200 on that one.

-£200?

-Yeah.

0:21:360:21:38

It's Scottish, Edinburgh silver.

0:21:380:21:41

-It always has a premium price to it.

-Right.

0:21:410:21:44

By the look of things, it's also complete.

0:21:440:21:47

What do you think it'll fetch at auction?

0:21:470:21:48

At auction, I reckon it would be something like a...

0:21:480:21:51

It's be a wideish estimate, 150, 180, something like that.

0:21:520:21:55

Now, these hallmarks aren't just on the bottom there.

0:21:550:21:59

Because this is made in many pieces, the next level up,

0:21:590:22:03

-has again you've got the hallmarks there.

-Oh, I see.

-So, each piece...

0:22:030:22:07

-Oh, I really like that.

-...has a corresponding hallmark.

0:22:070:22:09

Yeah, it's different. It is different.

0:22:090:22:11

And so, when you get to the bottles, each one has the hallmarks.

0:22:110:22:15

So, then you know the whole set's together,

0:22:150:22:17

it's not what we call a marriage.

0:22:170:22:19

What would be your lowest price?

0:22:190:22:21

My best on that's going to be 160.

0:22:210:22:22

I'm sorry, it's quite close to the price I paid for it,

0:22:220:22:25

so I'm trying to be as helpful as I can to you.

0:22:250:22:28

-Right.

-It's just the nature of it.

0:22:280:22:30

-Because you've got the...

-That or my light?

0:22:300:22:32

I think that'll make more money than the light.

0:22:320:22:34

-Do you think so?

-I personally prefer this to the light.

-I do.

0:22:340:22:37

-Yeah, I do.

-What you want to do? You said to me...

0:22:370:22:39

Yeah, I tell you what, I think we'll go for it.

0:22:390:22:41

-You're going to go for it?

-Yeah, I think so.

-You sure?

-Yeah.

0:22:410:22:43

-You said...

-What do you think?

0:22:430:22:45

No, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, but if you want it...

0:22:460:22:49

No, no, no, no, no.

0:22:490:22:50

It's what's going to make the money, isn't?

0:22:500:22:52

-Yeah.

-And we haven't got time left.

0:22:520:22:54

-Go on, then, buy it.

-Yeah. We'll take it.

0:22:540:22:56

Yep. Shake the lady's hand.

0:22:560:22:58

-Job done. Grudgingly.

-Sorry.

0:22:580:22:59

-That's all right.

-Sorry.

0:22:590:23:01

Thank you very much for being patient.

0:23:010:23:03

-No problem.

-Well, you've done it, girls.

0:23:030:23:05

All three items.

0:23:050:23:06

There's been a little fight.

0:23:060:23:08

-Yes.

-Why don't we just go chill out,

0:23:080:23:10

enjoy the sunshine and leave the Reds to battle out their last bits?

0:23:100:23:14

Yep, they need to get a move on.

0:23:160:23:17

The Reds have only nine minutes to buy their final item.

0:23:170:23:20

What are you thinking about the soda siphons?

0:23:200:23:22

I think we should go back and look.

0:23:220:23:24

-Are you sure?

-I really liked them.

-Do you like them?

0:23:240:23:26

-Yes.

-Let's go, go, go.

0:23:260:23:29

Quick, quick.

0:23:290:23:30

-Here they are.

-I like these.

0:23:330:23:35

-One for yourself.

-Oh, thank you very much.

0:23:350:23:36

Could you tell us something about them, please?

0:23:360:23:39

So, basically, before the days of canned drinks,

0:23:390:23:42

you used to have your soda water,

0:23:420:23:44

and they were used as mixers for spirits.

0:23:440:23:47

And how old would they be?

0:23:470:23:48

-They started in the 1930s, these are later ones.

-Yeah.

0:23:480:23:51

These are probably from the '60s.

0:23:510:23:52

Right. So, what would your very best price be on the six?

0:23:520:23:56

I could take you down to 36?

0:23:560:24:00

-Really?

-Happy with that?

0:24:000:24:02

-Bearing in mind, there's six bottles and the case.

-Yeah.

0:24:020:24:05

That's only £6 each.

0:24:050:24:06

-It's not bad.

-How about 30, and making it £5 each?

0:24:060:24:10

That sounds excellent.

0:24:100:24:12

I would rather do 35.

0:24:120:24:14

That would be the best, I'm afraid.

0:24:140:24:16

Can we not squeeze you just slightly more?

0:24:160:24:18

-I don't want to...

-I'd do 32, but that would be the very best.

0:24:180:24:21

-Lovely.

-OK. I think that sounds excellent.

0:24:210:24:23

-£5 each and £2 for the case.

-£2 for the case, fantastic.

0:24:230:24:26

-Is that a yes?

-That's a yes.

-Is that a yes?

0:24:260:24:28

-Yes.

-Yes.

0:24:280:24:29

Thank you very much.

0:24:290:24:31

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:24:310:24:32

The finishing post is in sight.

0:24:340:24:36

Teams, it's time to stop shopping.

0:24:360:24:38

All done. Come on, let's go.

0:24:400:24:42

Let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.

0:24:420:24:44

They snapped up this pair of Victorian candlesticks

0:24:460:24:49

for just £7.

0:24:490:24:50

Will this nostalgic set of 1960s cookie cutters

0:24:520:24:55

cut it at the auction?

0:24:550:24:57

They were £5.

0:24:570:24:59

And can they start a party with the vintage soda siphons and crate,

0:24:590:25:03

bought for £32?

0:25:030:25:05

Well, a bit of a slow start,

0:25:050:25:06

but you really went for it in the last 20 minutes, yes?

0:25:060:25:09

-Yes!

-Yes.

-Yeah. Well, Mandy,

0:25:090:25:11

I need to know, what's your favourite object?

0:25:110:25:13

The cookie cutters, cos there's a penguin in there.

0:25:130:25:15

Which, do you think, of the items you bought

0:25:170:25:18

is going to give you the biggest profit?

0:25:180:25:20

The cookie cutters, cos of the penguin.

0:25:200:25:22

Oh, really? OK! All right. All right.

0:25:220:25:24

What about yourself, Mark?

0:25:240:25:25

Cookie cutters as well.

0:25:250:25:26

Love them. I like the box, though.

0:25:260:25:28

I like the artwork on the box.

0:25:280:25:29

-You do?

-Yes.

-But come on,

0:25:290:25:31

what do you think will give you the biggest profit?

0:25:310:25:33

The brass candlesticks, I think.

0:25:330:25:34

Oh, good. That was your first buy.

0:25:340:25:36

-Yes.

-Now, just remind me how much you spent?

0:25:360:25:39

A massive £44.

0:25:390:25:43

-£44.

-Yes!

0:25:430:25:44

So, that tells me you're going to give me in return £256.

0:25:440:25:49

-There you go.

-Which stays with me for a brief moment,

0:25:490:25:52

-cos I'll pass it now to Caroline for the bonus buy.

-Thank you!

0:25:520:25:55

I've seen a few things.

0:25:550:25:57

But I'm going to keep shtoom for the moment.

0:25:570:26:00

While Caroline keeps shtoom but goes spending,

0:26:000:26:03

let's remind ourselves what the Blue team bought.

0:26:030:26:06

Jenny put her money on a Spanish leather horse.

0:26:060:26:09

It was £16.

0:26:090:26:10

Anya went for the unusual

0:26:120:26:14

early 20th century medical instruments for £42.

0:26:140:26:18

And they sort of agreed

0:26:180:26:20

on the Edinburgh marked silver condiment set

0:26:200:26:23

at a mighty £160.

0:26:230:26:26

Now, ladies, you may be great mates,

0:26:260:26:28

but you didn't always agree out there, today.

0:26:280:26:30

-Definitely not.

-I'm sorry!

0:26:300:26:33

But having said that, did you enjoy yourselves?

0:26:330:26:35

-Very much.

-You did?

-Very much.

-Very much. Loved it.

-Excellent.

0:26:350:26:38

-It was very good.

-Very good.

0:26:380:26:39

Jenny, I'd like to know your favourite item today?

0:26:390:26:42

I think it's the leather horse.

0:26:420:26:44

-The leather horse?

-Yes.

0:26:440:26:45

But which of the three items you bought do you think's

0:26:450:26:47

going to give you the biggest profit?

0:26:470:26:49

-I think the horse.

-Oh, the horse?

-Yes, I do. Yes.

0:26:490:26:51

Anya, where do you go on this?

0:26:510:26:52

The medical instruments.

0:26:520:26:53

OK. But which of the three's going to give you the biggest profit?

0:26:530:26:57

I would say Jenny's horse.

0:26:570:26:58

-You think so?

-Yes, I would.

0:26:580:27:00

-OK.

-Yes.

-Remind me how much you spent, ladies?

0:27:000:27:03

£218.

0:27:030:27:04

That's a formidable spend!

0:27:040:27:06

I mean, you were spending with conviction today.

0:27:060:27:08

-Yes.

-The last item, yes.

0:27:080:27:10

So, you're going to give me £82 in the leftover lolly?

0:27:100:27:13

-Yes.

-Lovely!

0:27:130:27:15

It goes straight to Ben.

0:27:150:27:16

You got your eye on anything out there for the bonus buy?

0:27:160:27:19

I haven't got a clue at the moment,

0:27:190:27:21

but I'm going to try and spend as much as I can,

0:27:210:27:23

I think that's my mission.

0:27:230:27:25

OK. So, while Ben goes off to spend as much as he can,

0:27:250:27:29

we're going off to the auction.

0:27:290:27:31

Well, we've come to Plymouth and you find us in Eldred's Auction House,

0:27:420:27:46

where I'm join by auctioneer himself Anthony Eldred.

0:27:460:27:49

-Hello.

-Welcome to you.

0:27:490:27:51

-Good to see you, Eric.

-Glad to be here.

0:27:510:27:53

Right, getting down to business,

0:27:530:27:54

let's have look at our Red team.

0:27:540:27:56

This is Mark and Mandy.

0:27:560:27:57

Now, their first buy is a pair of brass candlesticks.

0:27:570:28:01

What do you think?

0:28:010:28:02

We do see an awful lot of them, but they're in good condition.

0:28:020:28:05

No reason why they won't sell.

0:28:050:28:07

Right, well, what do you reckon, then?

0:28:070:28:09

£5-£10.

0:28:090:28:11

I think there're in with a fighting chance, cos they paid £7.

0:28:110:28:14

Well, that's not bad. That's not bad.

0:28:140:28:16

No, it's not. It's not indeed.

0:28:160:28:17

What are you like on cookie cutters in animal forms?

0:28:170:28:21

-Well, the bonus is they're in their box.

-Yes.

0:28:210:28:23

With all the cooking and baking programmes,

0:28:230:28:26

I'm sure somebody will want them.

0:28:260:28:27

So, how much?

0:28:270:28:28

I don't think they're going to be a big seller.

0:28:280:28:30

I think, probably, we're still under £10.

0:28:300:28:33

£3 or £4, perhaps £5.

0:28:330:28:35

Well, they paid £5 for it.

0:28:350:28:37

So again, they're in a pretty good chance.

0:28:370:28:39

-We're in the same ball park.

-Yeah, we are.

0:28:390:28:41

Then, this is just two from a sort of set of six siphons.

0:28:410:28:46

All in clear glass, and they are various makers, but, I mean,

0:28:460:28:51

they can be very attractive, can't they,

0:28:510:28:53

when they're in displays and...?

0:28:530:28:55

Yes, I mean, there are people that collect these things,

0:28:550:28:58

and they want to collect all the names of all the breweries

0:28:580:29:02

and all the drink sellers, so I hope we'll find somebody for them.

0:29:020:29:05

Where we going on the estimate for this one?

0:29:050:29:07

Six bottles, in their box, I think £20-£30 is sensible.

0:29:070:29:11

Right, they paid £32.

0:29:110:29:13

So it sounds as though the team are going to need their bonus buy.

0:29:130:29:18

So, let's take a look at it.

0:29:180:29:19

You left Caroline £256 to go and spend.

0:29:210:29:24

So, Caroline, tell us all.

0:29:240:29:27

Well, it's something you'd seen earlier.

0:29:270:29:30

Oh, my God! Oh, my God!

0:29:300:29:32

Do you remember this?

0:29:320:29:34

-Yes.

-Yes, we do.

-Yes, we do.

0:29:340:29:35

They're interesting.

0:29:350:29:37

We did think they were stylish.

0:29:370:29:38

-Yes.

-But?

0:29:380:29:40

But we were quite glad we didn't buy them, on the day!

0:29:400:29:43

-Oh, no!

-How much did you actually pay for them?

0:29:430:29:46

You look so worried.

0:29:470:29:49

-£50.

-OK.

0:29:490:29:51

-Oh!

-That's not too bad.

0:29:510:29:52

So, do they look more attractive to you?

0:29:520:29:54

Kind of, yes, kind of.

0:29:540:29:56

You could paint them a different colour,

0:29:560:29:58

if you don't like this colour.

0:29:580:29:59

But I think they'd be just great

0:29:590:30:01

in the corner of a room with a lamp on it, or your coffee on it.

0:30:010:30:05

I just think it's lovely!

0:30:050:30:07

What do you think they might make at auction, Caroline?

0:30:070:30:09

I think you might be surprised.

0:30:090:30:11

-Really?

-Yes.

-I hope so.

0:30:110:30:13

THEY LAUGH

0:30:130:30:15

I think they might make 75.

0:30:150:30:17

OK, all right. OK.

0:30:170:30:19

-Yeah. Fingers crossed. It could be all right.

-Legs crossed!

0:30:190:30:21

Well, you're looking very worried, you two, I have to say.

0:30:230:30:26

But do remember, you don't have to make your minds up now.

0:30:260:30:29

You do that after you've sold your first three lots.

0:30:290:30:32

But meanwhile, let's find out

0:30:320:30:34

what the auctioneer has to say about Caroline's bonus buy.

0:30:340:30:38

Well, this is one of our more unusual bonus buys,

0:30:400:30:45

what do you think of it?

0:30:450:30:46

Well, it's certainly one of the most shapely items I've ever had to sell.

0:30:460:30:49

Look good in a modern flat, perhaps, or for a student.

0:30:490:30:52

-Mm-hm.

-I think it's great fun.

0:30:520:30:53

So what's your estimate for a shapely table?

0:30:530:30:56

I think it's going to make £40-£60.

0:30:560:30:59

-Oh, right.

-Could even do a little better.

0:30:590:31:00

Bang in the middle. Caroline paid £50 for it.

0:31:000:31:03

So in with a chance with that one.

0:31:030:31:04

-I think so.

-OK.

0:31:040:31:06

Well, that's the Reds.

0:31:060:31:07

Let's have a look at the Blues, which is Anya and Jenny.

0:31:070:31:10

First off, they went out and bought a rearing horse, leather covered.

0:31:100:31:13

Do you get many of these in your part of the world?

0:31:130:31:16

No, I'd have to say I haven't seen anything quite like that before.

0:31:160:31:19

Probably continental, I suspect.

0:31:190:31:21

Made for the tourist trade, I think.

0:31:210:31:22

Yeah. And what do you reckon it, from a money point of view?

0:31:220:31:26

Well, it's decorative.

0:31:260:31:27

I suppose it's going to make £5-£10.

0:31:270:31:30

Five to ten. They went and paid £16 for that, so we'll watch,

0:31:300:31:34

wait and see. But the second item is this...

0:31:340:31:37

Let's describe them as medical instruments, OK?

0:31:370:31:42

Of a very delicate nature.

0:31:420:31:43

So, they're in their original case.

0:31:430:31:45

What are your thoughts there?

0:31:450:31:47

It's not really something that would appeal to a lot of people,

0:31:470:31:49

but there are collectors for medical instruments.

0:31:490:31:51

Yes, there are.

0:31:510:31:53

So, I have no reason to think we won't sell them.

0:31:530:31:55

But for how much?

0:31:550:31:56

We've put an estimate of £10-£20.

0:31:560:31:58

They paid 42, so that might be a bit of a long haul.

0:31:580:32:02

But like you say,

0:32:020:32:03

it's a niche market and it'll be interesting to see how that goes.

0:32:030:32:05

Well, the third item is the silver cruet set,

0:32:050:32:08

nice and neat and a good make.

0:32:080:32:10

-What are your thoughts?

-I like it.

0:32:100:32:11

I think it's a nice, smart little object, silver, always popular,

0:32:110:32:16

a little oil and vinegar bottle and another one on their stand,

0:32:160:32:19

all in nice condition,

0:32:190:32:20

and I think probably, we will get at least £40 - £60 for it.

0:32:200:32:24

40-60. OK.

0:32:240:32:26

Well, they paid £160 for that.

0:32:260:32:29

That is a lot.

0:32:290:32:30

We've been a little conservative, but that is a lot of money.

0:32:300:32:33

I think we'd struggle to get that far.

0:32:330:32:35

It's a big ask, do you think?

0:32:350:32:36

I think so.

0:32:360:32:37

It may be that they're going to need their bonus buy,

0:32:370:32:39

so let's have a look at it.

0:32:390:32:41

Well, you're left then, £82.

0:32:420:32:44

So, Ben, what did you go out and spend it on?

0:32:440:32:47

I was determined to try and spend a decent sum of money,

0:32:470:32:50

and so I ended up finding this.

0:32:500:32:53

-Oh!

-Oh, that's... Yeah.

-Ooh.

0:32:530:32:55

So, it's a Japanese lacquer jewellery box.

0:32:550:32:57

I reckon that the box dates to around 1920s, 1930s.

0:32:570:33:02

And there is a little bit of damage.

0:33:020:33:04

You can just see a little bit on the corner, there.

0:33:040:33:06

But overall, it's in good condition,

0:33:060:33:08

cos lacquer is quite a fragile material.

0:33:080:33:11

You often see them in blacks and in crimson colours,

0:33:110:33:14

so it's quite an unusual colour.

0:33:140:33:15

Very classic Japanese scene.

0:33:150:33:18

And when you open it up, you've got all the compartments for jewellery.

0:33:180:33:21

There's also a drawer here at the front.

0:33:210:33:26

So what do you think? You don't look very convinced, girls.

0:33:260:33:28

I don't know. I'm quite confident about it, if I'm honest.

0:33:310:33:33

-You are, aren't you?

-Yes, I am. I rather like it.

0:33:330:33:35

How much did you pay for that?

0:33:350:33:37

I paid 60.

0:33:370:33:38

-60.

-So I...

0:33:380:33:39

You know, I spent a good amount of money for you.

0:33:390:33:42

Will it make a profit?

0:33:420:33:43

I have seen boxes like this make up to three figures.

0:33:430:33:45

-Oh, right.

-I'm not going to promise that.

-Of course.

0:33:450:33:48

But I think it's got a good chance.

0:33:480:33:49

-It could do.

-I think it's got potential.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:33:490:33:52

-Different to what we've bought.

-Absolutely.

0:33:520:33:54

-Yes.

-Completely different.

-Not difficult.

0:33:540:33:55

Well, just remember you don't have to make your minds up just now.

0:33:590:34:02

You do that after your first three items have been sold.

0:34:020:34:05

But meanwhile,

0:34:050:34:06

let's find out what the auctioneer thinks

0:34:060:34:09

about Ben's Japanese lacquer jewellery box.

0:34:090:34:12

So here it is, this is Ben's buy.

0:34:140:34:16

What you make of that?

0:34:160:34:17

It's a slightly unusual colour.

0:34:170:34:19

It is a little lighter than the usual

0:34:190:34:21

sort of rather dark black and brown ones that you see.

0:34:210:34:24

So I think we stand a good chance of selling it.

0:34:240:34:27

-You do.

-Yeah.

-OK. And the estimate on that?

0:34:270:34:29

I think probably it will make between 20 and £30.

0:34:290:34:33

He paid £60 for it.

0:34:330:34:34

Gosh. That is a lot.

0:34:340:34:36

Yes, I think it'll be a big ask.

0:34:360:34:38

OK. You're taking the auction?

0:34:380:34:39

I am. Thoroughly looking forward to it.

0:34:390:34:41

Well, I'm looking forward to it, too.

0:34:410:34:43

-So, how are we feeling?

-Nervous.

0:34:500:34:53

-Excited.

-Good.

0:34:530:34:54

Well, that's a good combination, a good combination.

0:34:540:34:56

So, first time at auction?

0:34:560:34:58

-No.

-No.

-No, we go regularly to our local auction.

0:34:580:35:02

So, just a bit of a walk in the park for you two?

0:35:020:35:04

-Hopefully.

-Yeah.

0:35:040:35:05

With your first lot, you've got your brass candlesticks coming up.

0:35:050:35:08

-Yes.

-For which you've paid £7.

0:35:080:35:11

-Yes.

-So let's see if we can get a profit.

0:35:110:35:14

And a fiver for those quickly, at £5, six anywhere?

0:35:140:35:17

At five... Six.

0:35:170:35:19

At £6 here, in front, stripy shirt,

0:35:190:35:21

at six, seven, eight, nine.

0:35:210:35:24

At £9.

0:35:240:35:25

Got to round it up to ten, surely?

0:35:250:35:27

At nine, ten, thank you.

0:35:270:35:28

At £10. Makes my job a bit easier.

0:35:280:35:30

I've got 12. 12.

0:35:310:35:32

Yes. 14.

0:35:320:35:34

At £14. 18 here.

0:35:340:35:36

At £18, still on my screen at 18.

0:35:360:35:39

At £18, it's 20 if you want them.

0:35:390:35:42

You all finished then? At £18, I'll sell them...

0:35:420:35:44

£18, well done!

0:35:470:35:49

You've made yourself a profit, there, of £11, no less.

0:35:490:35:53

The next item coming up is your box set of the cake cutters.

0:35:550:35:58

-Yes.

-You only paid £5 for them.

0:35:580:36:00

-Yeah.

-And at the end of the day...

0:36:000:36:02

Fingers crossed, fingers crossed.

0:36:020:36:04

-Yeah.

-Let's get on a roll, shall we?

-Yeah.

0:36:040:36:06

A couple of pounds for those.

0:36:060:36:08

-A pound for them.

-Come on!

-Come on!

0:36:080:36:10

Got to be worth a pound, there they are, look, a pound.

0:36:100:36:12

He makes mean cookies, this man, at £1.

0:36:120:36:15

-Two.

-MARK:

-They're awesome!

-£2. Three!

0:36:150:36:17

They're worth a fiver of anyone's money!

0:36:170:36:19

Four! Five.

0:36:190:36:20

We're flying now. At £5.

0:36:200:36:22

Against the wall at five.

0:36:220:36:24

Six. £6!

0:36:240:36:25

£6.

0:36:250:36:27

Yes!

0:36:270:36:28

Profit, profit.

0:36:280:36:29

Thank God. At £7.

0:36:290:36:31

At seven, eight. He's back again, look.

0:36:310:36:33

£8. £8! Against the wall, halfway down.

0:36:340:36:36

-This is getting heady.

-At £8.

0:36:360:36:38

Save him, somebody. At £8 only, then.

0:36:380:36:41

Against the internet, nine.

0:36:410:36:43

-Nine!

-He's there, look, he's there.

0:36:430:36:44

£9. Round it up to ten.

0:36:440:36:47

At £9, then, sell them at nine...

0:36:470:36:50

-Fantastic!

-Well done!

0:36:520:36:54

You made a £4 profit.

0:36:540:36:56

Add that to the 11 you've already made,

0:36:560:36:58

-and you've got a rolling profit, there, of £15.

-Yes!

0:36:580:37:02

So, it's getting better, it's getting better.

0:37:020:37:05

Your various glass soda siphons, for which you paid £32.

0:37:050:37:08

-Yes.

-Your lot's coming up now.

-Lovely.

0:37:080:37:11

Soda siphons, and a tenner for those.

0:37:110:37:14

Ten I'm bid, back of the room at ten.

0:37:140:37:16

20 now. Bidding's online at £20.

0:37:160:37:19

Good advertising lot at £20, 22.

0:37:190:37:22

At £22, you're all quiet in the room.

0:37:220:37:24

-At £22.

-Come on, come on.

-It's all on screen at the moment.

0:37:240:37:27

At £22. It's an internet bid.

0:37:270:37:30

-Your very last chance then, at £22.

-No!

0:37:300:37:32

I'm going to sell them...

0:37:320:37:35

ALL: Oh, no!

0:37:350:37:37

What a shame. What a shame.

0:37:370:37:39

£22 is a £10 loss.

0:37:390:37:42

OK. So, you were already on plus 15.

0:37:420:37:45

No, listen, you're still in profit,

0:37:450:37:47

because by the time we take that away from the previous,

0:37:470:37:50

we've got ourselves a £5 profit.

0:37:500:37:52

So, £5 profit

0:37:520:37:55

moves us to the question of the bonus buy.

0:37:550:37:59

-You choose.

-I'd go for it.

0:37:590:38:01

Cos we've got nothing to lose.

0:38:010:38:02

-No.

-No gavel.

-No. Might as well.

0:38:020:38:04

Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

0:38:040:38:06

You go in with your legs, Caroline.

0:38:060:38:08

Well, let's hope that this one walks it for you.

0:38:080:38:10

Here we are, pay attention. This is it!

0:38:100:38:12

Go on, get the ball rolling, surely.

0:38:120:38:14

Somebody, £20?

0:38:140:38:15

Tenner?

0:38:150:38:16

Ten, I'm bid, back of the room.

0:38:160:38:17

12. 15.

0:38:170:38:18

18. 20.

0:38:180:38:21

Two. At £22 here.

0:38:210:38:24

-Come on, more.

-No.

-Come on.

0:38:240:38:25

At £22.

0:38:250:38:27

-All finished, then, at £22.

-Oh, no!

0:38:270:38:29

You're out online. All done.

0:38:290:38:30

-Oh!

-I'm so sorry.

0:38:330:38:35

What a shame.

0:38:350:38:37

That has given us a minus £28.

0:38:370:38:40

Take away the fiver you were already in the positive,

0:38:400:38:43

and we're down to minus £23.

0:38:430:38:46

It's not the end of the world!

0:38:460:38:47

It's the end of the world.

0:38:470:38:49

No, it's not the end of the world! Not a word to the Blues,

0:38:490:38:51

and just remember, that could be a winning score.

0:38:510:38:53

Everything is now in the lap of the gods.

0:39:000:39:02

Definitely. Definitely. Just got to pray.

0:39:020:39:04

Yeah, a little bit of that.

0:39:040:39:06

Positive thinking, that's what we're about.

0:39:060:39:07

Because your first item's coming up.

0:39:070:39:09

It is the rearing horse.

0:39:090:39:11

-Oh, yes.

-Yes, let's keep our fingers crossed that there's a nice profit

0:39:110:39:14

to be had on that. Either way, it's coming up now.

0:39:140:39:17

£5 for that, surely?

0:39:170:39:19

£5. Five I'm bid, back of the room at five.

0:39:190:39:21

-I'll take six.

-Come on, it's leather.

0:39:210:39:24

I'm bid eight. Bid £8 online.

0:39:240:39:26

At eight. Ten if you want it.

0:39:260:39:28

Will it on. Just keep willing it. Will it.

0:39:280:39:30

In the room at £10, here.

0:39:300:39:32

Thank you, sir. Against you online, now,

0:39:320:39:34

at £10, he's hovering.

0:39:340:39:36

12. 12 now.

0:39:360:39:38

14 if you like. 14.

0:39:380:39:40

At £14 here.

0:39:400:39:42

You're out online.

0:39:420:39:44

-Oh, come on, let's get 16.

-All done, then, at £14.

0:39:440:39:46

Quite sure? £14.

0:39:460:39:49

Well, listen, I thought you were about to win.

0:39:490:39:50

I thought it would have come in first, but either way,

0:39:500:39:53

it's only a loss of minus £2.

0:39:530:39:54

-For now.

-For now.

0:39:540:39:55

Right, this is your next lot coming up.

0:39:550:39:57

You paid £42.

0:39:570:39:59

Let's see if we can get a profit.

0:39:590:40:01

A set of 12 medical instruments.

0:40:010:40:04

A fiver, quickly.

0:40:040:40:05

Five, six, eight, ten, 12.

0:40:050:40:08

At £12.

0:40:080:40:09

-Come on, more than that.

-At the very back.

0:40:090:40:11

They're in their case, you know.

0:40:110:40:12

£12. 15 online.

0:40:120:40:14

At £15.

0:40:140:40:16

At £15, for medical instruments.

0:40:160:40:18

Quite sure? The bidding's online, than, at £15,

0:40:180:40:21

and I will sell for 15.

0:40:210:40:24

£15.

0:40:240:40:26

-Oh, gosh!

-Oh, what a shame.

0:40:260:40:28

Minus 27, I'm afraid.

0:40:280:40:30

Add your minus two, you're now at minus 29,

0:40:300:40:32

but you have got that cruet set coming up.

0:40:320:40:35

And you paid £160 for it, and it's coming up...now.

0:40:350:40:38

And I'm bid £40 for it, against you all in the room at 40.

0:40:380:40:42

Five. 50. Five, 60,

0:40:420:40:44

Five, seated there, 70.

0:40:440:40:46

Five, at 75...

0:40:460:40:48

-£75.

-At 75 here.

0:40:480:40:50

You're all done, then, at £75?

0:40:500:40:53

Last chance. Nothing online?

0:40:530:40:55

At £75, I'll sell it.

0:40:550:40:57

Oh! Ouch.

0:40:570:40:59

Minus £85,

0:40:590:41:01

which is giving us a total of minus £114.

0:41:010:41:06

OK. You've got the option of the bonus buy.

0:41:060:41:08

We're going for it.

0:41:080:41:10

And that is a joint decision?

0:41:100:41:11

-Yes.

-Yes.

0:41:110:41:13

Well, we can either sink into total oblivion,

0:41:130:41:15

-or claw back a bit of respectability.

-Yeah, exactly.

0:41:150:41:19

So, we've gone with the Japanese lacquer jewellery box.

0:41:190:41:21

It cost £60, and it's coming up now.

0:41:210:41:25

There it is. And fiver for that one.

0:41:250:41:27

Five I'm bid, £5.

0:41:270:41:29

At five, there, at the back.

0:41:290:41:31

Six, eight, ten, 12...

0:41:310:41:34

At £12 at the back.

0:41:340:41:36

At £12, then.

0:41:360:41:37

You're quite sure at £12?

0:41:370:41:39

-You're out on the net.

-No!

0:41:390:41:41

Back of the room,

0:41:410:41:42

and I'll sell it for £12.

0:41:420:41:44

Oh.

0:41:450:41:47

Sold for 12. That's minus £48.

0:41:470:41:52

Which gave you a final total of minus £162.

0:41:520:41:58

We should be proud of that.

0:41:580:41:59

Well, if you're going to lose, you know, lose big time.

0:41:590:42:02

OK. You could still win.

0:42:020:42:04

-Come on, let's have a... a group hug.

-Group hug.

0:42:040:42:06

Well, the results are in, and the bad news is

0:42:130:42:16

-that I'm not going to be handing out any money to either team.

-Oh.

0:42:160:42:20

Cos neither of you made a profit.

0:42:200:42:22

But the runners up, I can tell you now,

0:42:220:42:25

with an impressive loss of £162,

0:42:250:42:29

is the Blue team!

0:42:290:42:31

Yes!

0:42:310:42:32

If you're going to do it, do it in style.

0:42:320:42:34

-In style!

-Exactly.

-Yes, worth it!

0:42:340:42:36

-But have you had fun?

-Brilliant.

0:42:360:42:38

-Excellent.

-Actually brilliant.

-That's all we really need to know.

0:42:380:42:40

-Yes.

-Well, our winners today with a mere loss of £23 are our Red team.

0:42:400:42:45

-Yes!

-Well done!

0:42:450:42:46

I mean, I have to say that you could have been in profit,

0:42:460:42:49

had you not gone with the bonus buy.

0:42:490:42:51

-Sorry to say that, Caroline.

-No...

-Sorry to say that.

0:42:510:42:53

It was a brave move on your part, and to be fair,

0:42:530:42:55

I would have done the same.

0:42:550:42:56

But all things being equal, a jolly well done.

0:42:560:42:59

So, that's it for today.

0:42:590:43:01

Meanwhile, you can keep in touch with us on our website,

0:43:010:43:04

or follow us on Twitter.

0:43:040:43:06

But better still,

0:43:060:43:07

join us next time for some more bargain hunting, yes?

0:43:070:43:10
