Hello, I'm in Yorkshire and this is Yorkshire's Nile Wilson.

0:00:040:00:08

Winner of the bronze medal in the high bar at the Rio Olympic Games.

0:00:080:00:12

It's extraordinary to think that if Yorkshire were a country,

0:00:120:00:15

it would have come 17th in the medal table.

0:00:150:00:18

So will it be the Reds or the Blues

0:00:180:00:19

who top the Bargain Hunt medal table today?

0:00:190:00:21

Well, it's time to swing into action

0:00:210:00:24

and head over to the antiques fair at Wetherby Racecourse.

0:00:240:00:28

Let's go Bargain Hunting!

0:00:280:00:30

There are no medals on offer today here at the Wetherby Racecourse.

0:00:560:00:59

In fact, there's no racing either,

0:00:590:01:01

as it's been taken over by an antiques fair

0:01:010:01:03

for our Red and Blue teams to race around.

0:01:030:01:06

They've got £300, and they need to buy three items

0:01:060:01:09

to take off to auction and hopefully make a profit.

0:01:090:01:12

Now, who would you back today, the Reds or the Blues?

0:01:120:01:16

Let's have a sneaky peek at what's coming up.

0:01:160:01:18

It's a risky business for the Reds.

0:01:190:01:22

You see, I think you're looking at something that could crash and burn.

0:01:220:01:26

Phil's taking no chances with the Blues.

0:01:290:01:32

It's not often that I put my foot down with a very firm hand, OK?

0:01:320:01:36

But you're banned from buying that.

0:01:360:01:38

And at the auction, will the gamble pay off for our Reds?

0:01:400:01:42

-Come on, yes!

-There you are!

0:01:420:01:46

Or are our Blues in with a chance?

0:01:460:01:48

45. £40 at the back of the room...

0:01:480:01:52

That's all for later.

0:01:520:01:54

Let's meet today's teams.

0:01:540:01:56

And we've got two sets of friends today.

0:01:560:01:58

For the Reds, Charlie and Michael. And for the Blues, Abby and Olivia.

0:01:580:02:02

Hello, everyone.

0:02:020:02:03

-ALL:

-Hello!

-Now, we've got a couple of rockers here, haven't we?

-Yeah, that's right.

-Indeed, yeah.

0:02:030:02:07

-Yes, Michael?

-Yeah, definitely.

0:02:070:02:09

You've got your own band?

0:02:090:02:10

Yeah, we do, yeah. Started three, four months ago now?

0:02:100:02:13

Yeah, yeah. We parachuted Michael into the band.

0:02:130:02:16

-So what do you play, Michael?

-I play drums.

-Drums?

0:02:160:02:19

-And I'm the singer.

-And you're the singer!

-Yeah.

0:02:190:02:21

-Are you enjoying it?

-Yeah, love it.

-Really?

0:02:210:02:23

-Yeah, it's good fun.

-And you do gigs at weekends?

0:02:230:02:25

Yeah, we do quite a few gigs,

0:02:250:02:27

and at the minute, we're in the studio recording our first album.

0:02:270:02:30

-No!

-Yeah, yeah.

0:02:300:02:32

-How exciting is that!

-Should be out around springtime, I think.

0:02:320:02:36

-And what's it going to be called?

-We don't know yet.

0:02:360:02:38

That's an odd name, really... THEY LAUGH

0:02:380:02:41

-It's not all been written yet, so...

-No.

0:02:410:02:44

So how are you going to get on tactically together?

0:02:440:02:46

We haven't really got a plan.

0:02:460:02:49

-Have you not?

-Going to wing it, yeah.

0:02:490:02:51

We want to just get something that we think is good, that we both like.

0:02:510:02:54

-I like Americana.

-Do you?

-I do like a bit of Art Deco stuff.

0:02:540:02:57

What about you, Michael?

0:02:570:02:59

Anything kind of vintage, music memorabilia, I like.

0:02:590:03:02

Are either of you going to drive that hard bargain?

0:03:020:03:06

-Oh, yeah. Yeah.

-Yes?

0:03:060:03:07

I'm the negotiator.

0:03:070:03:09

Are you going to spend big or small?

0:03:110:03:12

We said we were going to spend small,

0:03:120:03:14

but I think we might just go crazy, cos it's someone else's money!

0:03:140:03:17

I'm looking forward to seeing how you get on.

0:03:170:03:19

Now for our Blue team, Abby and Olivia.

0:03:190:03:23

How did you two meet?

0:03:230:03:24

So, we worked in the same restaurant.

0:03:240:03:26

But we both moved to York at the same time,

0:03:260:03:29

and had no friends...

0:03:290:03:31

-Neither of you had any friends?

-No!

-Oh dear.

0:03:310:03:34

Very lonely!

0:03:340:03:36

And so, we were at a meeting at work

0:03:360:03:39

and I just asked her if she'd be my friend.

0:03:390:03:42

HE PRETENDS TO SOB

0:03:420:03:45

And did she say yes?

0:03:450:03:46

Well, we're here!

0:03:460:03:49

Doesn't mean you're friends because you're here!

0:03:490:03:51

I just dragged her along!

0:03:510:03:52

Do you still work there, Abby?

0:03:520:03:54

I don't, no. I'm a visual merchandiser.

0:03:540:03:57

A visual merchandiser?

0:03:570:03:58

-Yes.

-Explain!

0:03:580:04:00

It's basically a window dresser. It's just a posh name for it.

0:04:000:04:03

-I love poshly dressed windows!

-Yeah!

0:04:030:04:06

Now, Olivia, you're A, holding down a job

0:04:060:04:08

-and B, doing a master's degree, is that right?

-Yes, that's right.

0:04:080:04:11

I'm working full-time at the restaurant that we met at.

0:04:110:04:13

-Yeah.

-And I'm also doing a part-time master's degree in public history.

0:04:130:04:18

-Public history?

-Yes.

-Tell me about public history.

0:04:180:04:21

It's the engagement of the public through museums,

0:04:210:04:24

heritage sites and television and film.

0:04:240:04:26

-So is this going to help with your buying of antiques?

-Er...no.

0:04:260:04:30

I've always found objects really interesting,

0:04:310:04:34

-that's why I volunteer at the museum.

-Yeah.

0:04:340:04:36

And ever since I was little,

0:04:360:04:38

my dad dragged me around car boot sales.

0:04:380:04:41

Wonderful!

0:04:410:04:43

-What about you, Abby?

-Similar.

0:04:430:04:44

My mum is obsessed with furniture, antique furniture,

0:04:440:04:48

-she restores it herself.

-Oh, does she?

-Yes.

0:04:480:04:51

Does she restore it to sell it?

0:04:510:04:53

Erm...to keep it.

0:04:530:04:54

It's mostly still in the house, or in the cellar.

0:04:540:04:58

Just full to the brim. But yeah, so...

0:04:580:05:01

I've been dragged around antiques fairs and car boots as well.

0:05:010:05:05

-My whole life!

-And now it's your turn to drag each other round a car boot fair.

0:05:050:05:09

There's £300 for you to go shopping.

0:05:090:05:11

-Thank you very much.

-And chaps, £300.

0:05:110:05:14

-Thanks.

-Have a great time, off you go shopping.

-Cheers.

0:05:140:05:16

Well, well, well. What do we have here?

0:05:160:05:19

A battle of the sexes.

0:05:190:05:20

Male versus female.

0:05:200:05:22

But who will win?

0:05:220:05:24

So, all our teams need now are their experts.

0:05:250:05:28

Hoping to wheel out some profits for the Reds, it's Paul Laidlaw.

0:05:280:05:32

And strumming the blues for Blues, it's Phil Serrell.

0:05:350:05:40

So, teams, what's the plan?

0:05:400:05:41

Charlie, Michael - clearly you share a taste in music,

0:05:420:05:45

do you share the same taste while shopping?

0:05:450:05:47

What are we going to be buying?

0:05:470:05:49

Well, I was thinking maybe something '60s, '70s,

0:05:490:05:51

maybe music memorabilia related.

0:05:510:05:53

-OLIVIA:

-We've had a bit of a think.

0:05:530:05:55

-Bit of a thunk?

-Yeah.

-What have you thunk?

0:05:550:05:57

Anything to do with animals, I think, a little animal theme.

0:05:570:06:00

Anything from old, vintage kind of vinyls,

0:06:010:06:03

-or like posters as well.

-OK.

0:06:030:06:06

-Something kitsch.

-Kitsch?

-Yeah.

0:06:060:06:08

Something that'd go in our houses, but not maybe someone else's!

0:06:080:06:12

Right, teams, your time starts...now!

0:06:120:06:15

Now, we've got to find something for a song

0:06:160:06:18

and see if it'll drum up a profit at auction! Come on!

0:06:180:06:21

Come on, then.

0:06:210:06:23

Good luck, teams!

0:06:230:06:24

Do you like that lot?

0:06:310:06:32

Ooh-arr, Jim, lad! Ooh-arr!

0:06:320:06:34

Well, it's certainly different, Phil.

0:06:340:06:37

This isn't easy.

0:06:370:06:39

-It's hard, yeah.

-Definitely a lot harder than I thought, yeah.

0:06:390:06:42

We've only just started!

0:06:420:06:43

Don't panic, Reds, just focus.

0:06:430:06:46

It's not really very interesting-looking.

0:06:500:06:53

Right. Getting a measure of where we're going.

0:06:530:06:56

Come on, let's go and see what we can find.

0:06:560:06:58

See if you have better luck inside, Blues.

0:06:580:07:01

Scan, and move on.

0:07:010:07:03

Yeah? Easy as that.

0:07:030:07:05

Listen to the maestro, Reds!

0:07:050:07:08

-Beautiful.

-Really?

0:07:090:07:11

REALLY?

0:07:110:07:13

There's lots of giggling going on, Blues.

0:07:150:07:17

So what have you spotted, and will Phil like it?

0:07:170:07:20

-Would you actually have them in your house?

-You know I would.

0:07:200:07:23

You haven't done anything rash in my absence, have you?

0:07:230:07:25

We haven't, but we quite like these dogs.

0:07:250:07:27

Doesn't look convinced.

0:07:300:07:32

Well, you did say "kitsch", wasn't it?

0:07:320:07:34

-Yeah.

-Was that the word?

-Yeah.

0:07:340:07:35

It's the face he's pulling.

0:07:350:07:37

Do you know what, I'm kind of out of my comfort zone here.

0:07:370:07:41

By some distance.

0:07:410:07:42

These are Crown Devon.

0:07:420:07:43

But I mean, they're very much 20th-century.

0:07:450:07:47

They're 30 quid for the two.

0:07:490:07:51

Frankly,

0:07:510:07:52

I think they're probably £5 or £10 worth.

0:07:520:07:55

The thing is, if you like them,

0:07:550:07:57

I think they definitely fulfil your criteria.

0:07:570:08:00

Because in my book, there is no doubt at all that they are...

0:08:000:08:04

tat.

0:08:040:08:05

GIRLS GIGGLE

0:08:050:08:06

Do you really like them?

0:08:080:08:10

I think Abby has fallen in love.

0:08:100:08:11

I quite like them. And I completely agree. Yeah.

0:08:110:08:15

Do you want to find out how much they are?

0:08:150:08:17

You're hiding!

0:08:170:08:18

-Yes, I'm hiding.

-With some justification, actually.

0:08:180:08:22

Now, don't ask me why, but these two want to buy these off you.

0:08:220:08:27

-Well, who wouldn't?

-I wouldn't.

0:08:270:08:29

I think these are a tenner. Tell me what the best is.

0:08:300:08:32

£20 for the two.

0:08:340:08:36

Are you sure you wouldn't do 15?

0:08:360:08:38

I can't, honestly.

0:08:380:08:40

When do they date to?

0:08:400:08:42

They're about 1950s, I would imagine.

0:08:420:08:45

-'60s?

-Yeah.

-Something like that.

0:08:450:08:47

You really want to buy them?

0:08:470:08:49

-Yeah.

-Very well, congratulations.

0:08:490:08:52

-Thank you!

-They've got good taste, what can I say?

0:08:520:08:55

I can tell you what I can say, they've got no taste at all!

0:08:550:08:58

Phil may think the Blues have bought tat,

0:08:580:09:00

but they've spent £20 on their first buy

0:09:000:09:03

with only 15 minutes on the clock.

0:09:030:09:05

Are the Reds about to snap up their first item?

0:09:050:09:08

-These are very interesting, aren't they?

-Yeah, really interesting.

0:09:100:09:13

I don't mind telling you, I think this is so clever.

0:09:130:09:18

I love this.

0:09:180:09:19

-Looks really cool as well.

-Isn't it?

0:09:190:09:22

So we've got the Hanimex cine camera, we've got...

0:09:220:09:26

What else? The joiner's drill.

0:09:260:09:29

Yeah, I think that's an old school fire extinguisher.

0:09:290:09:32

Fire extinguisher, yeah, pyrene extinguisher.

0:09:320:09:35

That's just a universal clamp, isn't it, on a ball-and-socket-type joint?

0:09:350:09:38

They look really well done as well.

0:09:380:09:40

Yeah, really well put together.

0:09:400:09:41

I mean, if you had to pick one?

0:09:410:09:44

-I think the cine camera's beautiful.

-The camera, yeah.

-It's a bit '60s.

0:09:440:09:47

-It's TOTALLY '60s!

-It's really retro, like, you know.

0:09:470:09:51

Have you any idea of what these price tags... Are they price tags?

0:09:510:09:54

I think that says £58.

0:09:540:09:56

-It's not crazy money.

-No, it's really not.

0:09:560:09:58

Nitty-gritty, though -

0:09:580:10:00

you send an electrical thing like this to auction,

0:10:000:10:03

it's going to have to be safety tested, PAT tested,

0:10:030:10:06

and there's going to be a charge.

0:10:060:10:07

So...do we care?

0:10:070:10:11

-Not really.

-Nah!

0:10:110:10:12

-I'll see if I can get the guy to knock a tenner off, how about that?

-Yeah.

0:10:120:10:16

Or more, whatever!

0:10:160:10:18

Dream a little bigger, darling!

0:10:180:10:21

-Right, you going for it, Charlie?

-Yeah, I'm going for it.

0:10:210:10:23

-Right, we're just going to admire these lamps.

-Yeah, man.

0:10:230:10:25

Good luck. To the job of work!

0:10:250:10:27

Good luck negotiating then, Charlie.

0:10:280:10:30

So, have the Blues spotted something even Phil might like?

0:10:300:10:33

What is it you're looking at?

0:10:330:10:35

Well, I like this, and I know you'll like it.

0:10:350:10:38

The silver giraffe. What are you thinking?

0:10:380:10:40

-I can see you love it!

-I'll tell you what,

0:10:400:10:42

it's not often that I put my foot down with a very firm hand, OK?

0:10:420:10:45

But you're banned from buying that.

0:10:450:10:47

Now, come along. Behave.

0:10:470:10:48

Clearly not! And as Phil said, he's put his foot down with a firm hand.

0:10:500:10:54

Charlie, have you managed to negotiate a good price for the lamp?

0:10:550:10:58

-Charlie, what are we paying for it?

-Well, £48.

0:10:580:11:01

Magic! I like your style, guys.

0:11:010:11:05

Magic, we did it! Now, over there, that's where we're going next.

0:11:050:11:07

After 20 minutes, it's 1-1.

0:11:070:11:09

Blues, do these hold a profit?

0:11:090:11:11

I just really like them, I like the look of them.

0:11:130:11:15

I've got two, like, suitcases and a trunk in my house.

0:11:150:11:19

Along with my kitsch.

0:11:190:11:20

Do you like any of these?

0:11:200:11:21

I really like that one.

0:11:210:11:23

Yeah, I think I'm drawn to that one as well.

0:11:230:11:26

Let's just look at them thoroughly.

0:11:260:11:27

-Look at them.

-This one, I think,

0:11:270:11:30

is sort of almost late Georgian.

0:11:300:11:31

It's a leather-bound, brass-studded,

0:11:310:11:34

-coaching trunk or box, really.

-Yeah.

0:11:340:11:37

This one, I think, may have had fabric or something put in here...

0:11:370:11:42

-Yeah.

-..and that's been taken off.

0:11:420:11:44

But I still quite like it.

0:11:440:11:46

-That one is French.

-Yeah.

0:11:460:11:48

You can tell I'm an absolute expert,

0:11:480:11:50

cos it's got Toulon on the top of it!

0:11:500:11:52

So out of these three now, we know that one's 80,

0:11:530:11:56

this is 90 and that's 90.

0:11:560:11:58

-Which is your favourite now?

-Mine's still that one.

0:11:580:12:00

Can we have a little look inside?

0:12:000:12:01

I think you ought to have a LOT of look inside.

0:12:010:12:03

So go round, right, have a look at the back first.

0:12:030:12:07

Right...

0:12:070:12:09

So you've established there's no hole in the bottom.

0:12:090:12:11

-OK? And then it's a bit frayed on the front, look.

-Yeah.

0:12:110:12:14

You've got to bear in mind that these things are the thick end of 100 and a bit years old.

0:12:140:12:17

-Yeah.

-So they're going to have... They're going to look, you know,

0:12:170:12:20

frayed round the edges.

0:12:200:12:21

Right, you definitely want one of these?

0:12:210:12:23

-Yeah.

-Which one?

0:12:230:12:24

I think this one. And I would go for it.

0:12:240:12:26

-Let's go and shake their hand then, come on.

-OK.

0:12:260:12:29

-I think we've got a trunk deal coming here.

-OK!

0:12:290:12:32

Right, which one have we chosen?

0:12:320:12:34

I think we'd like to go for the one at the back.

0:12:340:12:36

-Right.

-Was that 80?

0:12:360:12:38

-£80.

-Is that the best that you can do?

0:12:380:12:39

It is, I'm afraid, yes.

0:12:390:12:41

Right. We'll go for that.

0:12:410:12:42

-All right. Thank you very much.

-Thank you.

-Thank you.

0:12:420:12:45

So, in 25 minutes, the Blues have their second buy.

0:12:460:12:48

Are you pleased?

0:12:480:12:50

I think we're doing all right.

0:12:520:12:53

-What do you think?

-I think we're doing really well.

0:12:530:12:56

I really like the fact that Phil hated the dogs and we loved them.

0:12:560:12:59

-Yeah. So that's definitely a winner.

-That's a bonus, if anything!

0:12:590:13:02

We can guess what Phil thinks.

0:13:030:13:05

Those dogs, I think they're really, really horrid.

0:13:050:13:09

I wouldn't have bought them for a pound!

0:13:090:13:11

But the trunk, I absolutely love.

0:13:110:13:13

Perhaps, you know, I might be down with the kids. Bang on trend.

0:13:130:13:16

-Of course you are, Phil.

-No, I'm not.

0:13:160:13:19

Now, whilst the teams carry on with the shopping,

0:13:190:13:21

I'm going to find out about a fascinating local journalist.

0:13:210:13:24

I've been joined by Anne Wickes

0:13:310:13:33

from the Second World War Experience Centre, here in Wetherby.

0:13:330:13:37

Now, Anne, men and women have come from all over the world

0:13:370:13:40

to share their experiences with the centre.

0:13:400:13:43

But you are going to talk specifically

0:13:430:13:46

about one man who saw the horrors of war close up.

0:13:460:13:48

Yes, I've brought along a few of the diaries that we hold in the archive,

0:13:480:13:53

and these were written by a Yorkshire journalist

0:13:530:13:57

called Godfrey Talbot.

0:13:570:13:59

Godfrey, during the Second World War, was a BBC war correspondent.

0:13:590:14:03

But he began his BBC career

0:14:030:14:06

as a press officer in the BBC's Northern regional office.

0:14:060:14:12

On the 1st of September 1939, as German troops invaded Poland,

0:14:120:14:17

he was summoned by the BBC to report to Broadcasting House in London.

0:14:170:14:22

And we do have a diary note that he made of his journey.

0:14:220:14:26

"All the traffic was the other way.

0:14:260:14:29

"Cars almost nose to tail, crowded to roofs.

0:14:290:14:32

"People getting out at all costs.

0:14:320:14:35

"Bedding and prams and cots strapped on top, all fleeing.

0:14:350:14:39

"Everybody expected vast devastating bombing to start at once."

0:14:390:14:45

Gosh. And when did he end up in North Africa?

0:14:450:14:48

He arrived there, in Cairo, in the summer of 1942.

0:14:480:14:53

And they travelled in a sometimes temperamental army truck,

0:14:530:14:58

-which they nicknamed Belinda.

-Yeah.

0:14:580:15:01

And she carried all their recording equipment

0:15:010:15:04

-and their kit and supplies.

-Yeah.

0:15:040:15:06

And that's Godfrey, seated on the steps.

0:15:060:15:09

Conditions on these trips were often difficult

0:15:090:15:13

-and sometimes downright dangerous.

-Yeah.

0:15:130:15:17

ARCHIVE RECORDING:

0:15:170:15:19

He was attached to the Eighth Army.

0:15:390:15:41

And the Eighth were, of course, famous for their involvement

0:15:410:15:45

in one of the decisive battles of the Second World War.

0:15:450:15:48

The Second Battle of El Alamein.

0:15:480:15:50

It's generally considered by a lot of people to be the turning point of the war, isn't it?

0:15:500:15:53

It was very important.

0:15:530:15:55

In fact, Godfrey was present at a news briefing

0:15:550:15:59

which the Eighth Army commander, General Montgomery,

0:15:590:16:03

gave on the morning of the Battle of El Alamein.

0:16:030:16:06

"Montgomery holds a press conference,

0:16:060:16:08

"eve of battle at Eighth Army HQ.

0:16:080:16:10

"Made a memorable speech - No surrender.

0:16:100:16:13

"We're going to kick them out of North Africa - No failure.

0:16:130:16:17

"We shall win.

0:16:170:16:19

"It starts at ten tonight.

0:16:190:16:21

"It'll be a terrific battle.

0:16:210:16:22

"Army and Air Force are one.

0:16:220:16:24

"We've waited for this day."

0:16:240:16:27

They really do give an insight

0:16:270:16:28

into exactly what it must've been like to be there.

0:16:280:16:31

Was he popular with his audience?

0:16:310:16:33

Yes, he was, very popular.

0:16:330:16:34

And he received many letters from the listeners back home

0:16:340:16:39

who'd enjoyed his broadcasts.

0:16:390:16:42

We have one that I've brought along,

0:16:420:16:43

which was from a Midlands listener.

0:16:430:16:47

Who was so pleased with his broadcast

0:16:470:16:50

that she enclosed four pairs of socks along with the letter.

0:16:500:16:54

So he was, no doubt, duly grateful.

0:16:540:16:56

-Thank you very much indeed, Anne.

-Thank you.

-Absolutely fascinating.

0:16:560:16:59

Well, it's time to head back to the shopping,

0:16:590:17:02

and to the battle of the Reds and the Blues.

0:17:020:17:04

But who's going to be victorious?

0:17:040:17:06

Back to it, and it's 2-1 to the Blues.

0:17:100:17:12

We're just over halfway through.

0:17:120:17:15

Now, has Paul spotted something the Reds are going to like?

0:17:150:17:18

Are you talking about that thing that looks like...

0:17:180:17:20

-That big brown...

-..some hockey sticks with some bamboo on it?

-That's what it does look like!

0:17:200:17:25

That clearly is a section of bamboo.

0:17:250:17:27

Bamboo, yeah.

0:17:270:17:29

Likewise, split bamboo element.

0:17:290:17:32

Brass-headed tacks holding it together.

0:17:320:17:34

And these are root bulbs of the bamboo.

0:17:340:17:38

-Oh, right.

-Yeah? You get that swollen bit?

0:17:380:17:40

-That's where the roots are.

-Oh, right.

0:17:400:17:42

Pull it out.

0:17:420:17:43

That... Let me see what it says.

0:17:430:17:45

Second World War, Japanese bamboo box.

0:17:470:17:51

Age... Not Second World War.

0:17:510:17:54

I put it to you, based on the quality of the mounts

0:17:540:17:56

and the construction, that's a hundred year old if it's a day.

0:17:560:17:59

I think that's late 19th- century.

0:17:590:18:01

-What's the price on it?

-Price on it is...

0:18:010:18:03

It's £45.

0:18:040:18:06

That seems quite cheap, doesn't it?

0:18:060:18:07

-I mean, could you be tempted?

-Yeah, I could be.

-Definitely.

0:18:070:18:10

-Yeah, yeah.

-But don't you see...

0:18:100:18:12

-I'll ask the question and see if that's the price or not.

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:18:120:18:15

The Reds seem intrigued.

0:18:150:18:17

Let's see what the best price is.

0:18:170:18:18

Back with the Blues - have they spotted another trunk?

0:18:180:18:22

What do YOU think about that?

0:18:220:18:24

-I think that's a lot of money.

-Yeah.

-I think it's a lot of money.

0:18:240:18:27

You'll think I'm mad. I quite like...

0:18:270:18:28

I've got a bit of a wheelbarrow fixation going on,

0:18:280:18:31

I quite like that wheelbarrow.

0:18:310:18:32

-GIRLS LAUGH

-Wheelbarrow?!

-Yeah.

0:18:320:18:35

Well, you can have your tat, I've got me wheelbarrow.

0:18:350:18:37

We've all got problems in life.

0:18:370:18:39

Each to their own, Phil.

0:18:400:18:42

Paul, what's the best price for this bamboo box?

0:18:420:18:45

45. You tempted at 40?

0:18:450:18:48

How tempted are you at 35?

0:18:490:18:51

-Oh, yeah.

-Even more tempted at 35.

-Yeah. It's got to be a winner.

0:18:510:18:54

-Definitely, yeah.

-Yeah.

-How can you lose?

0:18:540:18:57

Surely, everyone at an auction, like you and I, is going to go,

0:18:570:19:00

"I don't know what, but I know it's quality."

0:19:000:19:03

-Yeah, yeah. Totally agree.

-Definitely.

-We done it?

0:19:030:19:05

-100%, that's it.

-Fellas, look at this, two down.

0:19:050:19:08

And we've just been in the door 30 seconds!

0:19:080:19:11

Righty!

0:19:110:19:12

So the Reds have got a genuine antique for their second buy.

0:19:120:19:17

35 minutes down.

0:19:170:19:18

How are you finding it, Reds?

0:19:180:19:19

We were hoping to get something like... Some old Beatles stuff,

0:19:210:19:24

something like that. But we've ended up buying an antique box and a lamp!

0:19:240:19:27

Paul, are you happy?

0:19:300:19:32

One more thing to buy. Thankfully, plenty time to do it.

0:19:320:19:35

I've jinxed myself. I'm going to leave it over to them.

0:19:350:19:38

They've got a strong sense of style and taste.

0:19:380:19:40

I'm interested to see what they pull out the hat next.

0:19:400:19:44

So am I. Now, it appears the Blues

0:19:440:19:46

have stumbled across the quirky lamp stall.

0:19:460:19:48

-I absolutely love this. What do you think?

-Yeah.

0:19:480:19:51

-It's gorgeous, look at it.

-Yeah, it's really cool.

0:19:510:19:53

I really like the colour as well.

0:19:530:19:55

I think that would look really nice in a house.

0:19:550:19:58

So we're thinking...

0:19:580:19:59

We love this to start off with, but look at that.

0:19:590:20:01

That's a...

0:20:010:20:03

Probably, I would think a French Art Deco in style vacuum cleaner,

0:20:030:20:07

1920s or '30s.

0:20:070:20:09

But the way he's done it, I think it's so cool.

0:20:090:20:11

-Yeah.

-And that would either sit in the corner of a room, wouldn't it?

0:20:110:20:14

-Or it would sit on a table.

-Yeah, yeah.

0:20:140:20:16

-It's definitely a statement.

-It is.

0:20:160:20:19

You'd walk into the house and be like, "Wow, that's really cool."

0:20:190:20:21

The thing you have to bear in mind with all electrical items

0:20:210:20:24

is that when they go to auction, they have to be PAT tested.

0:20:240:20:27

And there's going to be a cost involved in that.

0:20:270:20:29

But you need to just factor that in.

0:20:290:20:31

You certainly do.

0:20:310:20:33

And today's auction house will charge £4 for a PAT test,

0:20:330:20:36

which will factor in the auction.

0:20:360:20:38

There you are, look. £135.

0:20:390:20:41

If it were MY Bargain Hunt, I'd definitely buy that.

0:20:410:20:44

-I think it's awesome.

-Yeah?

-Yeah, I do.

0:20:440:20:46

-Really?

-Yeah.

-I love it. I'm willing to go.

0:20:460:20:49

So you're going to go and...

0:20:490:20:51

Remember, you've got to factor in that cost of that PAT test.

0:20:510:20:54

-I will.

-OK?

-Mention it!

-Yeah.

0:20:540:20:56

-I'll go and negotiate.

-Yeah, twice. Three times!

-Yeah!

0:20:560:20:59

What's this? All the Blues in agreement?

0:20:590:21:03

Good luck negotiating, Olivia.

0:21:030:21:04

Reds, what's next?

0:21:050:21:07

-Guys, what are you looking at?

-Yeah, it's like a...

0:21:080:21:11

-Looks like a...

-Candle holders?

-Yeah.

0:21:110:21:13

Dressing table set maybe, for...?

0:21:130:21:15

-Spot on.

-Yeah?

0:21:150:21:17

In pressed glass,

0:21:170:21:19

which means moulded.

0:21:190:21:20

-Yeah.

-Yeah?

0:21:200:21:22

Frosted amber - which I like...

0:21:220:21:26

-Desperately out of fashion.

-It's quite pretty, though, isn't it?

0:21:260:21:29

-I mean, it's...

-It is pretty,

0:21:290:21:31

and it hails from the same neck of the woods as you.

0:21:310:21:33

-Does it?

-Because that's Jobling's glass, and that's North East glass.

0:21:330:21:36

Oh, right. Is it unusual to see a set like that,

0:21:360:21:39

with everything intact, and...?

0:21:390:21:41

Here is my problem...

0:21:410:21:43

-Absolutely not.

-No.

0:21:430:21:45

And our other problem is,

0:21:450:21:47

there's no great buying interest for them.

0:21:470:21:49

Dressing table sets, across the board,

0:21:490:21:51

whether they're Victorian porcelain

0:21:510:21:55

or 1930s pressed glass -

0:21:550:21:59

not a lot of people care.

0:21:590:22:01

Even Jobling's.

0:22:010:22:02

What do you think? I mean, OK, ask me this question -

0:22:020:22:05

"That comes into your auction, Laidlaw,

0:22:050:22:07

"what pre-sale estimate are you putting on it?"

0:22:070:22:10

-£20 to £40.

-Yeah, I was going to say about 25.

0:22:100:22:12

Yeah, yeah.

0:22:120:22:13

And it's sitting at 48.

0:22:130:22:16

Should we look, should we just find out what this could be?

0:22:160:22:19

-Yeah, yeah.

-Shall I go and ask?

-Yeah, yeah.

-Give me two ticks.

0:22:190:22:21

Could be a risk, Reds.

0:22:230:22:24

Fingers crossed with the price, Paul.

0:22:240:22:26

Speaking of prices, has Olivia got a good one for the Hoover lamp?

0:22:260:22:29

Erm, 125.

0:22:290:22:31

-You bought it?

-Yes.

0:22:310:22:32

-Well, Abby, is that all right?

-Well, we've already done it. Sorry!

0:22:320:22:36

Yeah, I love it.

0:22:360:22:37

I'm really pleased with that. And that is definitely not tat, is it?

0:22:370:22:40

No, it's great, I love it.

0:22:400:22:41

Look at it, it's beautiful! Like, I really like it.

0:22:410:22:43

I think we've done really well. I think we smashed it.

0:22:430:22:46

-We've definitely won.

-Yeah!

0:22:460:22:47

Hands down!

0:22:470:22:49

Come on - cup of tea time.

0:22:490:22:51

Loving your confidence, Blues. All items hoovered up in 45 minutes.

0:22:510:22:54

Paul, the dressing table was £48.

0:22:560:22:58

Have you managed to negotiate?

0:22:580:22:59

Big problem, guys.

0:23:010:23:03

The big problem being, she's come down to £25 on them.

0:23:030:23:08

You see, I think you're looking at something that could crash and burn.

0:23:090:23:14

This is another dressing table set.

0:23:140:23:18

But Jobling's, it's complete,

0:23:180:23:21

we're selling in the right neck of the woods - what do you think?

0:23:210:23:25

Well, it's difficult to say no to that.

0:23:250:23:28

Mmm... Yeah, it's pretty good.

0:23:280:23:30

-Yeah, we'll do it, aye.

-Yeah.

0:23:300:23:33

-You just did it, guys.

-25.

-That's three.

0:23:330:23:35

-Awesome.

-Well done, eh?

-Brilliant.

0:23:350:23:37

Well done, Reds.

0:23:370:23:38

But you might have taken a risk.

0:23:380:23:40

GONG Cut!

0:23:400:23:42

Right, teams, your time is up.

0:23:420:23:45

-Right, come on, guys!

-All right.

0:23:450:23:48

Now, let's check out what the Red team have bought.

0:23:480:23:51

First up, Charlie and Michael hope they're in the picture

0:23:520:23:55

with this camera lamp. £48 paid.

0:23:550:23:58

Next, they bought a genuine antique,

0:23:580:24:01

and paid £35 for this bamboo box.

0:24:010:24:03

And finally, will there be a pretty profit on this dressing table set?

0:24:050:24:09

Bought for £25.

0:24:090:24:11

Charlie and Michael, I'm slightly disappointed in you.

0:24:110:24:14

-Ha-ha!

-Oh, why?

-Do you know why?

0:24:140:24:16

-Do you know why?!

-Why?

-Not a single musical instrument!

0:24:160:24:19

-Oh!

-I know, we just went right off the reservation!

0:24:190:24:22

You two rockers went off to buy musical instruments

0:24:220:24:25

and came back with all sorts - a camera, for a start!

0:24:250:24:28

-Yeah!

-A camera lamp.

0:24:280:24:30

So, Charlie, what's your favourite lot?

0:24:300:24:32

Erm, the camera lamp.

0:24:320:24:34

-Without a doubt?

-Yeah, without a doubt, yeah.

0:24:340:24:36

Yeah? And Michael, what do you think?

0:24:360:24:38

-Definitely the same, the camera lamp again.

-Yeah?

0:24:380:24:40

Never have I known such unanimity, it's wonderful!

0:24:400:24:43

-So, Charlie, what's going to make the biggest amount of money?

-Erm...

0:24:430:24:46

I think it's the box that Paul picked out,

0:24:460:24:48

I think that's going to be the best one.

0:24:480:24:50

You think so? Are you in agreement?

0:24:500:24:52

I think the box as well.

0:24:520:24:53

-It's, erm... It is...

-It's a unique piece, isn't it?

0:24:530:24:56

-Yeah, it really is.

-Yeah.

-Well, no pressure, then, Paul(!)

0:24:560:24:59

-Well, you spent £108.

-Yep.

0:24:590:25:02

I'm afraid that leaves 192.

0:25:020:25:04

Come on.

0:25:040:25:06

HE WHEEZES

0:25:060:25:09

Are your pockets big enough, Paul?

0:25:090:25:12

My word!

0:25:120:25:13

What are you going to do with that?

0:25:130:25:16

Arguably, we've bought a clapped-out old cine camera...

0:25:160:25:18

-Yeah.

-..some bamboo box or other,

0:25:180:25:20

and your granny's dressing table set.

0:25:200:25:24

I want to try and buy something REALLY respectable!

0:25:240:25:28

So while Paul goes off to buy something really respectable,

0:25:280:25:31

let's check out what the Blue team have bought.

0:25:310:25:34

First up, Abby and Olivia loved these dogs.

0:25:360:25:39

Phil didn't.

0:25:390:25:40

£20 paid.

0:25:400:25:41

Next, will this trunk be filled with a profit?

0:25:430:25:46

£80 paid.

0:25:460:25:47

And finally, they all agreed on this Hoover lamp - £125 paid.

0:25:490:25:55

Well, Olivia and Abby,

0:25:550:25:56

that was a pretty focused performance, wasn't it?

0:25:560:25:58

Yeah, I think we did pretty well.

0:25:580:25:59

And you didn't get in a panic.

0:25:590:26:01

No, no flusters. I think we did pretty well.

0:26:010:26:03

-Perfect use of one hour, really.

-Yeah.

0:26:030:26:06

-So, Abby, what's your favourite lot?

-I think it's the, erm, dogs, yeah.

0:26:060:26:10

-The dogs.

-Yeah!

-Olivia?

0:26:100:26:12

The dogs, yep.

0:26:120:26:14

-In agreement there!

-Yep!

0:26:140:26:15

And which is going to make the most profit?

0:26:150:26:17

I think it's going to be the light.

0:26:170:26:19

-The light.

-Yep.

-Olivia?

0:26:190:26:20

Possibly, but I would like the dogs to make a very good profit.

0:26:200:26:23

Philip is shaking his head...

0:26:230:26:25

I don't know why(!)

0:26:250:26:26

..quite vigorously there.

0:26:260:26:28

Er, yeah. I sort of...

0:26:280:26:30

The dogs have passed me by, Charlie.

0:26:300:26:31

-Have they?

-Mmm.

-So, you spent £225, which is pretty good, really.

0:26:310:26:35

-Yeah, we did.

-But it does rather dangerously leave Mr Serrell

0:26:350:26:39

with £75, doesn't it?

0:26:390:26:41

Yeah, that's not what we were aiming for.

0:26:410:26:43

Do you want to hand it over? You probably don't, really!

0:26:430:26:46

-There you go!

-75...

0:26:460:26:48

Phil, have you ever seen such riches?

0:26:480:26:50

Well, d'you know what, these girls set themselves out to buy tat,

0:26:500:26:53

and I think they lost their way a little bit.

0:26:530:26:54

-But I'm going to try and put them back on track with that.

-Good.

0:26:540:26:58

So while Philip puts them back on track,

0:26:580:26:59

I'm off to Darlington to today's auction.

0:26:590:27:02

Today we're at Thomas Watson Auctioneers,

0:27:120:27:14

and I'm with the auctioneer himself, David Elstob.

0:27:140:27:17

-David, hello.

-Hi, Charlie.

0:27:170:27:18

Charlie and Michael bought three items - they are so different.

0:27:180:27:21

We begin with this item, which is...

0:27:210:27:24

-It's actually a lamp.

-Yes.

0:27:240:27:26

You might...

0:27:260:27:28

Somebody furnishing a home, but then again, it's very small for a lamp.

0:27:280:27:31

You might get a camera collector.

0:27:310:27:35

I don't see a lot of mileage in it, unfortunately.

0:27:350:27:37

It's very much a fad now, isn't it,

0:27:370:27:39

making things into something that they aren't?

0:27:390:27:41

-Yes.

-We'll come to that with the Blues in a minute, but...

0:27:410:27:44

-So, what was your estimate on it?

-20 to 40.

0:27:440:27:47

Yep, I rather felt that was coming, really.

0:27:470:27:49

-It's not your favourite lot, is it?

-It isn't.

-No.

0:27:490:27:53

It cost £48, but of course it doesn't end there, does it?

0:27:530:27:56

You've kindly had it PAT tested.

0:27:560:27:58

All electrical items

0:27:580:28:00

that come for sale need to be tested for safety,

0:28:000:28:03

and the PAT test costs £4.

0:28:030:28:04

So, that actually stands them in at £52.

0:28:040:28:07

I think there might be a bit of pain there.

0:28:070:28:09

There might be a bit of pain, but you never know, do you?

0:28:090:28:12

I think their second item, this bamboo, cylindrical box,

0:28:120:28:15

is a totally different cup of tea.

0:28:150:28:17

-I love it.

-I do too.

0:28:170:28:19

-I think it's a lovely box. Nice quality.

-Yeah.

0:28:190:28:22

Nicely designed.

0:28:220:28:23

I think it was probably made for a scroll.

0:28:230:28:25

Oh, right, a scroll box, yeah?

0:28:250:28:26

I think so.

0:28:260:28:28

And it's very useful, and what a novel item.

0:28:280:28:30

-Put that on a dressing table?

-Yeah, it looks the part.

0:28:300:28:32

Yeah. What about an estimate?

0:28:320:28:34

-40 to 60.

-40 to 60, that's better.

0:28:340:28:37

-They might be into profitsville here.

-Good.

-Paid 35.

0:28:370:28:39

-They've done well.

-They've done well.

-Yeah.

0:28:390:28:42

Third item is...is more traditional, isn't it?

0:28:420:28:45

How many people would have something like that

0:28:450:28:47

on their dressing table today?

0:28:470:28:48

-Probably very few today.

-Yeah.

0:28:480:28:51

-It's erm...good condition.

-It is in nice condition.

-Yep.

0:28:510:28:53

As you say, it's a striking colour.

0:28:530:28:55

-What about value?

-30 to 50 is our estimate.

0:28:550:28:57

Ooh! Not bad!

0:28:570:29:00

David - quite enjoying your estimates here.

0:29:000:29:03

-They paid £25.

-OK, well, hopefully a small profit.

0:29:030:29:05

So you might get them out of trouble there.

0:29:050:29:07

Well, if you don't get them out of trouble,

0:29:070:29:09

they might need their bonus buy.

0:29:090:29:11

Let's have a look.

0:29:110:29:13

Well, Charlie and Michael, you left him plenty of money -

0:29:130:29:15

and can you remember what he said?

0:29:150:29:17

He said, "I'm going to buy something respectable"!

0:29:170:29:21

What have you done, Paul?

0:29:210:29:22

OK, what, chaps, do you think that...?

0:29:220:29:25

Oh, it's the back of something.

0:29:250:29:26

-Back of...?

-What's that?

-Pocket watch?

0:29:260:29:28

It's a watch - but not a pocket watch.

0:29:280:29:31

Have you seen one like that before?

0:29:310:29:33

-No.

-No, I haven't, no.

-Is it for a buttonhole?

0:29:330:29:35

-You are on it!

-Hey!

0:29:350:29:37

It's a lapel watch, or a buttonhole watch.

0:29:370:29:39

It would go through the buttonhole, thus,

0:29:390:29:41

with the movement hidden underneath the lapel.

0:29:410:29:43

Highly novel.

0:29:430:29:45

Highly uncommon - certainly respectable.

0:29:450:29:48

-Yeah.

-I paid...£70 for that.

0:29:480:29:51

Mmm. How old is it?

0:29:510:29:53

Late 19th century. A proper antique.

0:29:530:29:56

So how much do you think it's going to go for?

0:29:560:29:58

Well, I think it should be £80 to £100 worth.

0:29:580:30:02

I'm not going to tell you I think it's an absolute flyer,

0:30:020:30:06

but I'd be gutted if there wasn't a wee profit left in it for us.

0:30:060:30:08

-I mean, what do YOU think?

-Yeah.

-Definitely, I think it's got...

-It's really interesting, I like it.

0:30:080:30:12

Really interesting it is - to you, and I think to the wider audience.

0:30:120:30:16

-Yeah.

-It's a lot different compared to what we normally see.

0:30:160:30:19

Well, the boys quite liked that,

0:30:190:30:20

but will the auctioneer think it's a respectable item,

0:30:200:30:24

and will it make a profit?

0:30:240:30:25

Paul's bought what is I think really quite a rare lot, an unusual lot.

0:30:250:30:31

And here it is, it's a lapel clock.

0:30:310:30:34

-Do you like it?

-It looks wonderful, Charlie.

0:30:340:30:36

It's an interesting movement, isn't it?

0:30:360:30:38

Because the actual body of it's like a wristwatch...

0:30:380:30:41

-Yeah, it's obviously very well made and well designed.

-Yeah.

0:30:410:30:44

Very nice, I think it's probably late 19th-century in date.

0:30:440:30:47

-Yeah, yeah.

-Quite, I would think, a collectable object.

0:30:470:30:50

-Yeah.

-A lot of people on the internet, I think,

0:30:500:30:52

will probably go for that one.

0:30:520:30:54

What about an estimate on it?

0:30:540:30:55

40 to 80.

0:30:550:30:56

Paul paid £70 -

0:30:560:30:58

-I think Paul was particularly pleased to find it for £70.

-Yes.

0:30:580:31:01

So I think he's confident that it'll go up to

0:31:010:31:03

the top end of your estimate rather than the bottom.

0:31:030:31:05

I think there's some mileage in that one.

0:31:050:31:07

Well, that's the Red team.

0:31:070:31:08

Now for the Blues, for Abby and Olivia.

0:31:080:31:11

We start off with something of a standard lot, really, I think,

0:31:110:31:14

the Crown Devon dogs.

0:31:140:31:16

-Yes. Something we come across a lot of.

-Yeah.

0:31:160:31:19

There are collectors out there for them, but not of huge value,

0:31:190:31:23

-I'm afraid to say.

-What sort of value?

-30 to 50 is our estimate.

0:31:230:31:26

Well, we call that a huge value.

0:31:260:31:28

I think they bought them the right money, £20.

0:31:280:31:31

-OK.

-I think you'll get them a profit, won't you?

-Fingers crossed.

0:31:310:31:34

However, the trunk might be a different matter.

0:31:340:31:36

It's a splendid thing.

0:31:360:31:38

-You like it, don't you?

-I do, very much.

0:31:380:31:40

Unfortunately, the condition's not great.

0:31:400:31:42

-Yep.

-There's some damage to the straps and some wear on it.

0:31:420:31:45

-Yeah.

-But it's a lovely old trunk.

0:31:450:31:47

-What of money would you put on that?

-50 to 80 is our estimate.

0:31:470:31:50

50 to 80. Well, they paid top end, 80,

0:31:500:31:54

so the profit might be somewhat TRUNK-ated.

0:31:540:31:56

-I think so.

-Do you think...? Yes.

0:31:560:31:58

Well, we'll move swiftly on from that, to the...

0:31:580:32:01

Well, is it a lamp, is it a vacuum cleaner - what is it?

0:32:010:32:06

Well, if it's a lamp, it's a very small one.

0:32:060:32:09

It's not going to light up a room, that's for certain.

0:32:090:32:11

Yeah, I mean, they've got a competition on their hands here, haven't they?

0:32:110:32:15

-One side's gone for a camera into a lamp, the other one's gone for a vacuum cleaner.

-Yes.

0:32:150:32:18

The difference is - the amount they paid.

0:32:180:32:21

-What sort of money would you put on that?

-I'd put 40 to 60.

0:32:210:32:24

They paid...£125 for it!

0:32:240:32:28

Oh, dear.

0:32:280:32:30

Well, add the PAT test, £4... 129.

0:32:300:32:34

This is going to be a struggle, or could be, couldn't it?

0:32:340:32:37

I think it'll be a great struggle.

0:32:370:32:39

We love a struggle!

0:32:390:32:40

So, it's almost certain that they will need something of a bonus buy.

0:32:400:32:44

Let's have a look at it.

0:32:440:32:45

Well, girls, you left this man with a huge amount of money,

0:32:450:32:49

and he said he was going to get you back on track.

0:32:490:32:52

Has he?

0:32:520:32:53

Ready for this?

0:32:530:32:55

-No!

-Definitely not!

0:32:550:32:57

What is that?!

0:32:570:32:59

What do you mean, what is that, it's a wheel!

0:32:590:33:01

Yeah, but why?

0:33:010:33:03

Well, why not? Because it's tat, and you wanted tat.

0:33:030:33:06

It's not even tat - it's just huge!

0:33:060:33:09

Did you buy it or find it?

0:33:090:33:11

I'm an expert, you know?

0:33:130:33:15

On what?

0:33:150:33:16

THEY LAUGH

0:33:160:33:18

This cost £12.50.

0:33:190:33:20

But there's good news!

0:33:200:33:22

Because there isn't one of them, I got you one each.

0:33:220:33:25

So, I bought two, for £25.

0:33:250:33:26

-So...

-Oh, my...

-What do you mean, "Oh, my..."?

0:33:260:33:30

I feel like this is revenge for the dogs.

0:33:300:33:32

Yeah, you got it in one!

0:33:320:33:34

How much of a profit?

0:33:340:33:36

THEY LAUGH

0:33:360:33:37

Well...I think it'll make between £30 and £50.

0:33:370:33:41

Well, girls, you don't have to make up your mind now.

0:33:410:33:44

Although I think if we waited a hundred years,

0:33:450:33:47

we'd still know what you were going to say!

0:33:470:33:50

But anyway, let's see what the auctioneer thinks of Phil's wheels.

0:33:500:33:54

Well, well, well, here is the bonus buy - what do you think of these?

0:33:550:33:58

Because there's only one here - but he did buy two.

0:33:580:34:01

Yeah, it's a pair of them. They're very large.

0:34:010:34:04

CHARLIE LAUGHS

0:34:040:34:06

-And a bit rusty.

-And a bit rusty!

-But otherwise, they're lovely.

0:34:060:34:10

What do you think someone can do with them?

0:34:100:34:11

Probably put them onto the gable end of their house.

0:34:110:34:14

-Yeah.

-Make coffee tables from them.

0:34:140:34:16

-What sort of value?

-30 to 50.

0:34:160:34:18

Well, that's all right. Because they only paid £25.

0:34:180:34:21

-So you might get them out of trouble there.

-Hope so.

-Yeah.

0:34:210:34:25

You've certainly got a challenge on your hands today, David.

0:34:250:34:27

Off you go to the rostrum, and frankly, good luck.

0:34:270:34:29

75, 75 bid with you.

0:34:330:34:35

At 75, bid, then, internet's out...

0:34:350:34:37

80. 85. 85 bid.

0:34:370:34:39

Charlie and Michael, are you old hands in the saleroom?

0:34:410:34:43

-Not really!

-No?

-No!

0:34:430:34:45

Ever been to an antiques sale before?

0:34:450:34:47

No, I haven't, actually, first time.

0:34:470:34:48

-Are you enjoying it?

-Yeah.

-Yeah, it's great.

0:34:480:34:51

First up is the photographic lamp. It's an unusual lot.

0:34:510:34:54

-Yeah, it is.

-Will they like it? Let's see.

0:34:540:34:57

It's a vintage Hanimex M300 photographic lamp

0:34:570:34:59

with bulb and tripod.

0:34:590:35:01

And I'll start you with interest at £15.

0:35:010:35:04

-15. Oh dear.

-£15, I'm bid a 15.

0:35:040:35:07

20 on the gallery. 20 bid on the gallery,

0:35:070:35:08

20 bid, I'll take 25.

0:35:080:35:10

At £20 it is, up on the gallery.

0:35:100:35:12

-20, then, are we all done, are we finished?

-Oh, no.

0:35:120:35:14

£5 anywhere else?

0:35:140:35:17

The bid's on the gallery, 20 then, are we all done?

0:35:170:35:19

At £20, all done.

0:35:190:35:21

Oh, no! Do you know, that's just

0:35:230:35:25

a nibbling little loss of 32!

0:35:250:35:29

Oh dear, dear, dear!

0:35:290:35:30

But faith, we've got the bamboo cylindrical box.

0:35:300:35:32

I'll start you with a 25 bid, 25 bid for it, to see 30.

0:35:320:35:37

£25 with me, £30 I'll take.

0:35:370:35:40

I have £25 bid, 30 bid. 35.

0:35:400:35:41

Go on, push it.

0:35:410:35:43

35 bid to see 40.

0:35:430:35:45

At £35 then, all done and finished.

0:35:450:35:47

-We said 35...

-At £35, all done at 35?

0:35:470:35:50

Oh...

0:35:510:35:53

Well, after that stunning effort

0:35:530:35:57

you're still £32 down.

0:35:570:35:59

You've got your dressing table set. Well, here it goes.

0:35:590:36:02

Glass, six-piece dressing table set, a nice set,

0:36:020:36:05

nice condition, I'll start you with interest, £20.

0:36:050:36:09

£20 I'm bid the set. At 20, 25 online.

0:36:090:36:13

-Yes!

-25 to see 30.

0:36:130:36:16

The bid's online then at £25, I'm going to sell.

0:36:160:36:19

It's an unusual set of circumstances, really, isn't it?

0:36:190:36:22

You know, you're only down £32, and, of course,

0:36:220:36:25

you have the potential

0:36:250:36:27

of the great man's bonus buy.

0:36:270:36:29

So er... The lapel watch, do you want to go for it or not?

0:36:290:36:33

-Yeah.

-Got nothing to lose now.

0:36:330:36:35

It cost £70.

0:36:350:36:36

-You're definitely going with it?

-Yeah.

-Let's go.

0:36:360:36:38

You're going with it whether you like it or not, chaps.

0:36:380:36:41

A nice circular movement, nice raised dial.

0:36:410:36:45

I'll start you with interest at £25.

0:36:450:36:47

25 I'm bid for it. At 25, I'll take 30.

0:36:470:36:51

-30 bid online.

-Yes.

-35 bid with me.

0:36:510:36:53

35 bid with me, to see 40.

0:36:530:36:55

40 bid online.

0:36:550:36:57

The bid's online of 40, I'll take 45.

0:36:570:36:59

£40 of bids are online.

0:36:590:37:01

45? 45 in the room.

0:37:010:37:03

45 in the room.

0:37:030:37:04

50 bid online.

0:37:040:37:05

-Yes!

-55, 55 in the room.

0:37:050:37:08

Had 55 bid, 60 online.

0:37:080:37:10

65.

0:37:100:37:11

Come on, Laidlaw!

0:37:110:37:13

The bid's on the internet, and the room's out.

0:37:130:37:16

I'm going to sell to the internet bidder at £60, all done?

0:37:160:37:20

-Oh...

-Was that 60?

-Yeah...

0:37:200:37:22

Only lost a tenner.

0:37:220:37:25

Could have been worse.

0:37:250:37:26

I'm afraid, chaps, it's a £42 loss.

0:37:260:37:29

But let me tell you,

0:37:300:37:32

a lot bigger losses than that have won Bargain Hunt in the past!

0:37:320:37:37

If I may say so from my experience, you've done really rather well!

0:37:370:37:41

Abby and Olivia, are you getting the excitement of the saleroom?

0:37:500:37:53

Yes. Definitely.

0:37:530:37:54

Have you been to an auction before?

0:37:540:37:56

I have, yeah. My mum takes me to them, yeah.

0:37:560:37:59

Oh, so you're an old hand at this?

0:37:590:38:01

-I never bid.

-You never bid?!

0:38:010:38:03

Well, we don't want you bidding today, but we do want them bidding.

0:38:030:38:05

This is it. The first part

0:38:050:38:08

of your great experience of life with Phil Serrell.

0:38:080:38:11

And it starts... with two Bonzo dogs!

0:38:110:38:14

Charlie, that's not funny, don't humour them.

0:38:150:38:17

Two Crown Devon Bonzo dogs,

0:38:170:38:20

nice pieces of 1930s pottery, very fun.

0:38:200:38:23

I'll start you at £20, £20 I'm bid.

0:38:230:38:27

£20 I'm bid, the Bonzo dogs are £20, I'll take 25.

0:38:270:38:30

-25, a lady's bid.

-Yay!

-There you are, you see.

0:38:300:38:33

30, 35, 40, 45.

0:38:330:38:35

£40 at the back of the room.

0:38:350:38:38

At £40 it is then.

0:38:380:38:39

Are we all done, we're finished?

0:38:390:38:40

At £40, then, all done.

0:38:400:38:42

Well... £20 profit.

0:38:430:38:45

-Girls, you've doubled your money!

-Yes, we have.

0:38:450:38:50

Much to the chagrin of old grumpoid over there.

0:38:500:38:53

Anyway, we've now got the French trunk.

0:38:540:38:57

Nice thing, this.

0:38:570:38:59

I'll start you at £65.

0:38:590:39:01

-65 bid.

-65!

0:39:010:39:03

At 65 bid.

0:39:030:39:05

65, 70, 5, 80, 85, 90.

0:39:050:39:08

Profit!

0:39:080:39:10

I've got 95 online now.

0:39:100:39:12

95 online, online bidder at 95, 100 next, if you want.

0:39:120:39:16

At £95 then, on the internet then,

0:39:160:39:18

fair warning at £95...

0:39:180:39:21

Wonderful! £15 profit!

0:39:230:39:26

Add 20 -

0:39:260:39:28

makes £35 profit so far!

0:39:280:39:31

And all this, with a vacuum cleaner to come!

0:39:320:39:35

252 is a French vintage vacuum cleaner,

0:39:360:39:39

converted to a standard lamp.

0:39:390:39:41

I'll start you with interest on the book at £35.

0:39:410:39:44

-35?

-35 I'm bid.

0:39:440:39:46

-That's not bad, only got about a hundred to go(!)

-40, 45.

0:39:460:39:48

50, sir? 50 if you want.

0:39:480:39:50

50 in the room.

0:39:500:39:52

50 bid in the room. My book's out.

0:39:520:39:54

At 50 bid the room, 55 online.

0:39:540:39:56

60, sir? Sure now?

0:39:560:39:58

-One more if you want.

-Go on, sir. Yes!

0:39:580:40:00

60 in the room. 60 bid in the room, 65 next.

0:40:000:40:02

Could I tempt you with one more?

0:40:020:40:05

65 it is online. Don't feel any pressure!

0:40:060:40:08

-65 online...

-LAUGHTER

0:40:080:40:11

..70 if you want?

0:40:110:40:12

At 65, then, 70 in the room.

0:40:120:40:14

70 bid the room, 75 next.

0:40:140:40:17

The internet's out then.

0:40:170:40:19

Fair warning, and the gavel's up, it's in the room at £70.

0:40:190:40:22

Aw!

0:40:230:40:25

Oh, dear. That's a loss of £59.

0:40:250:40:29

Now, you definitely need Mr Serrell to ride over the brow of the hill

0:40:290:40:33

with the cavalry here, carrying two wagon wheels!

0:40:330:40:36

-Which have cost £25.

-Oh, ye of little faith.

0:40:380:40:41

-So, do you want to go with them?

-I think so.

-Yeah.

-We might as well.

0:40:410:40:44

Get in, girls, good stuff.

0:40:440:40:46

-That's a bit of a change of heart, isn't it?

-Well, we ARE losing!

0:40:460:40:50

-So you're going with them?

-Yes.

0:40:500:40:52

They cost 25... Here they are.

0:40:520:40:55

Pair of old wagon wheels.

0:40:550:40:57

They have seen better days,

0:40:570:40:59

but they're very country and very rustic.

0:40:590:41:01

I'll start you with interest at £65.

0:41:010:41:03

-Get in there!

-65 bid to see 70.

0:41:030:41:05

65, 70 I'll take for them.

0:41:050:41:08

At 65, 70, 75, 80 bid in the room.

0:41:080:41:12

£80 of the room then, my book's out, then I'm selling.

0:41:120:41:16

At £80, fair warning at £80.

0:41:160:41:19

£80?!

0:41:190:41:21

It's £55 profit!

0:41:210:41:23

We knew it, didn't we?

0:41:230:41:25

That extraordinary. Thanks to old wagon wheels Serrell,

0:41:250:41:28

you've made a total profit of £31!

0:41:280:41:31

-Get in!

-Can you believe it?

0:41:310:41:34

Never in doubt there. Was it? Never in doubt.

0:41:340:41:36

Anyway, I know it's difficult not to get overexcited with a £31 profit,

0:41:360:41:40

-but not a word to the Reds.

-Yep.

0:41:400:41:43

Well, I have to tell you that the idea of Bargain Hunt

0:41:490:41:52

is to make a profit.

0:41:520:41:54

I don't know if that resonated with either of you(?)

0:41:540:41:57

And of course, we don't have winners and losers,

0:41:570:42:00

we have winners and runners-up.

0:42:000:42:02

The runners-up failed to make a profit, I'm afraid,

0:42:020:42:07

and that is...the Red team.

0:42:070:42:09

Yes... Very, very sorry.

0:42:100:42:13

You lost money on your first lot, on that photographic lamp,

0:42:130:42:17

and then the next two items did really very well

0:42:170:42:21

because they made nothing at all.

0:42:210:42:23

And then your expert added his true expertise...

0:42:240:42:27

THEY LAUGH

0:42:270:42:29

..and dolloped a little loss of his own in there,

0:42:290:42:31

just to sink you a little further!

0:42:310:42:35

And it was £42 down the drain.

0:42:350:42:36

But - you two girls, have you done well?

0:42:360:42:40

Before you look too smug, I have to say,

0:42:400:42:43

one, two, three - eyes left.

0:42:430:42:46

That pair of wagon wheels.

0:42:470:42:49

They cost £25...

0:42:490:42:51

and you know, chaps, they made £80!

0:42:510:42:54

What is more, you've made £31!

0:42:560:42:59

But anyway, have you enjoyed it?

0:42:590:43:01

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

-It's been amazing.

0:43:010:43:03

-Have you had fun, boys?

-Yeah, we've had a great time.

0:43:030:43:05
