Hello and welcome to the show.

0:00:020:00:03

I'm kicking things off in the kitchen, rather than the antiques fair, here in Peterborough.

0:00:030:00:07

Every year, this arena hosts a huge food and country fair,

0:00:070:00:11

so I thought, "What a great opportunity

0:00:110:00:14

"to show off my baking skills."

0:00:140:00:16

Here are the key ingredients that every team needs for a successful

0:00:160:00:20

bargain hunt.

0:00:200:00:21

Firstly, make sure you use the "full hour" on the clock.

0:00:210:00:25

You'll need "egg-ceptional" experts.

0:00:250:00:29

Always try and get a "butter" price.

0:00:290:00:34

And, of course, this should really sweeten the deal.

0:00:340:00:38

Next, whip it up into a frenzy at the auction

0:00:390:00:43

and there we have it.

0:00:430:00:46

The winning ingredients for one gorgeously gooey

0:00:460:00:49

golden gavel.

0:00:490:00:51

Right, enough of all this, it's time to tuck in.

0:00:510:00:53

Let's go bargain hunting!

0:00:530:00:55

Our teams will have their work cut out today.

0:01:200:01:22

There's a lot of ground to cover.

0:01:220:01:24

There are hundreds of stalls and this antiques fair is huge.

0:01:240:01:29

With the aim of making a profit at auction,

0:01:290:01:31

they've got one hour on the clock

0:01:310:01:33

and £300 in their pocket to buy three items.

0:01:330:01:36

But let's not dilly-dally,

0:01:360:01:37

it's time to have a look at what's coming up.

0:01:370:01:40

The Reds rule with their hearts and not with their heads.

0:01:400:01:44

I think Sofia wants it for herself.

0:01:440:01:46

I do, yeah. I would buy this for myself.

0:01:460:01:49

With the Blues, it's more of a diplomatic shop.

0:01:490:01:51

Well, this is where we have a full and frank discussion

0:01:510:01:54

and then we do what she says.

0:01:540:01:55

And over at the auction, there is despair.

0:01:570:01:59

Oh!

0:01:590:02:01

And desperation...

0:02:010:02:03

Just one more! Please!

0:02:030:02:05

But that's all coming up later.

0:02:050:02:07

It's time now to meet our teams and what a great bunch we have for you

0:02:070:02:11

today. For the Reds, we've got mother and daughter,

0:02:110:02:13

Hannah and Sophia.

0:02:130:02:15

And for the Blues, married couple Carol and Don.

0:02:150:02:17

-Welcome, everyone. Hello!

-Hi!

-Hello!

0:02:170:02:19

Let's turn straightaway to the Reds

0:02:190:02:22

and to you, Hannah. Tell me, what do you do for a living?

0:02:220:02:25

I work as an independent consultant.

0:02:250:02:27

I'm a scientist and a health economist.

0:02:270:02:29

And I believe you've got some letters after your name.

0:02:290:02:32

In fact, you've been through a lot of university.

0:02:320:02:34

Tell me about your academic career?

0:02:340:02:36

I studied chemistry at University College, London and I have

0:02:360:02:40

a PhD from the University of Bristol,

0:02:400:02:42

and a health economics degree from the University of Aberdeen,

0:02:420:02:46

and a business degree from Cranfield Business School.

0:02:460:02:49

Fantastic! Wow!

0:02:490:02:51

How do you unwind? Do you get some spare time?

0:02:510:02:53

We go hill walking. So quite recently, we went to Borneo,

0:02:530:02:56

we went jungle trekking, climbed Mount Kinabalu together,

0:02:560:03:00

which is the highest mountain in Asia.

0:03:000:03:02

I mean, I thought that going on Bargain Hunt together was some good

0:03:020:03:05

mother-daughter bonding, but probably climbing the highest mountain in

0:03:050:03:09

Southeast Asia might just be pip it to the post!

0:03:090:03:11

I think this might be just as challenging.

0:03:110:03:13

-What do you think, Sofe?

-Perhaps!

0:03:130:03:15

Now, Sofia, tell me,

0:03:150:03:17

it sounds like you're a bit of a chip off the old block

0:03:170:03:19

because Mum's a scientist and you might be following in her footsteps?

0:03:190:03:22

Well, at the moment, I'm studying for my A-levels,

0:03:220:03:25

so I'm doing physics, chemistry, maths and further maths.

0:03:250:03:28

And if I get the grades, hopefully,

0:03:280:03:30

I'll be studying at the University of Cambridge,

0:03:300:03:33

doing natural sciences next year.

0:03:330:03:34

-Wow.

-I want to get an astrophysics degree.

0:03:340:03:37

Space is considered the final frontier

0:03:370:03:39

and I want to be on the cutting edge of science

0:03:390:03:42

and help to uncover the mysteries of the universe.

0:03:420:03:44

Well, you are really interesting and inspiring,

0:03:440:03:47

I'm so glad you're joining us today.

0:03:470:03:49

But you've got some competition.

0:03:490:03:51

In the Blues, ha-ha!

0:03:510:03:52

Welcome, Don and Carol, thank you for joining us.

0:03:520:03:55

Now, Don, let's hear how you and Carol met.

0:03:550:03:57

Well, yes, we met when I moved to Leicester

0:03:570:04:02

and was working as a physio at the time.

0:04:020:04:05

I got sent to a new department,

0:04:050:04:07

which was neurology, and Carol was the boss

0:04:070:04:10

and she's been the boss ever since.

0:04:100:04:12

Married for 27 years and we've been together for about 30,

0:04:120:04:15

31 years.

0:04:150:04:16

Oh, fantastic, that is a lovely story.

0:04:160:04:18

Congratulations. So, what do you good day-to-day?

0:04:180:04:21

Done a lot of travelling, we've just been to Machu Picchu,

0:04:210:04:24

just got back from Amsterdam.

0:04:240:04:25

Later on in the year, we're going to Japan.

0:04:250:04:28

I like to learn a little bit of languages from wherever we go,

0:04:280:04:31

so we've also started a course in Japanese at Leicester Uni.

0:04:310:04:35

It's totally different from any other language I've never studied.

0:04:350:04:38

Good on you because I believe it's very good for the old grey

0:04:380:04:41

matter to be learning languages at any point in your life.

0:04:410:04:43

Well, especially, you know, at our age!

0:04:430:04:46

Now, tell me, Carol, you're also retired.

0:04:460:04:48

-I am.

-So, how do you fill your time?

0:04:480:04:50

I love walking, I like hill walking as well.

0:04:500:04:52

We're a bit too similar to our opponents, you know.

0:04:520:04:55

I do something for charity every year, so I have sky dived,

0:04:550:04:58

I've zip wired, I've abseiled, I've done all kinds of things.

0:04:580:05:01

But this year, I've got to fit 60 things in

0:05:010:05:04

because I'm going to be 60 in November -

0:05:040:05:05

and one of which was to try and appear on TV!

0:05:050:05:08

-Dun-dun-duh!

-Ta-dah!

-Tick it off the list!

0:05:080:05:11

But also, I had a message this morning from my friend, who said,

0:05:110:05:15

"If I manage to get the word 'sausage' into the interview,

0:05:150:05:19

"she would donate an extra £50."

0:05:190:05:21

-So, sausage!

-So, you say sausage.

0:05:210:05:23

-I say sausage.

-Sausage?

-Sausage.

-Sausage?

0:05:230:05:26

-Sausage.

-I make that £250!

0:05:260:05:28

Come on, cough up!

0:05:280:05:30

Five sausages here!

0:05:300:05:31

Oh, nice work, so, 60 for 60.

0:05:310:05:33

-60 for 60.

-And you're ticking them off the list, one by one.

0:05:330:05:36

-I am, yes.

-Fantastic.

0:05:360:05:37

Now, I'm going to give you more than £60,

0:05:370:05:40

300 is what I'm going to give you.

0:05:400:05:42

How do you think you're going to spend it?

0:05:420:05:44

-Any tactics?

-Don usually spends small.

0:05:440:05:46

Yeah, I usually spend small but I'm going to try and leave the expert

0:05:460:05:50

-about a fiver.

-Oh!

0:05:500:05:53

Oh, they will not be pleased to hear that.

0:05:530:05:56

But this is really great.

0:05:560:05:57

We've got such fantastic teams on Bargain Hunt today.

0:05:570:06:00

Inspiring, enthusiastic people,

0:06:000:06:02

who are just about to receive £300 each.

0:06:020:06:07

Can you believe it?

0:06:070:06:08

Tick that off your list! And your experts are waiting to meet you,

0:06:080:06:11

so off you go and very good luck!

0:06:110:06:13

-Thank you.

-See you later.

0:06:130:06:15

I love this. It's all girl power today.

0:06:150:06:17

I think Don might be a bit outnumbered.

0:06:170:06:19

Of course, the teams will have their experts lending a hand today.

0:06:190:06:23

Wheeling and dealing with the Reds, it's Ben Cooper.

0:06:230:06:27

Whilst hoping to shed some light on some bargains, it's Gary Pe.

0:06:270:06:31

Have you got any idea what you'd like to buy? Hannah?

0:06:310:06:34

I've got no idea.

0:06:340:06:35

We're just going to see what we like and hopefully find a bargain.

0:06:350:06:38

Oh, I'd love to find a little bit of jewellery.

0:06:380:06:40

-Something...

-Hmm, shiny!

0:06:400:06:41

Yeah, shiny, gold, lots of colour.

0:06:410:06:43

I'd like something shiny and sparkly, I'm like a magpie.

0:06:430:06:47

Well, if it's bronze and it's naked, I'm having it.

0:06:470:06:50

Ooh, saucy!

0:06:500:06:51

This is it, teams, your 60 minutes starts now!

0:06:510:06:54

HOOTER

0:06:540:06:56

Let's head out and see what we can find. Come on, girls.

0:06:560:06:58

Well, now, let's go!

0:06:580:06:59

Good luck, everyone.

0:06:590:07:01

So...bronze.

0:07:010:07:03

-Yeah, nude bronze.

-Nude bronze.

0:07:030:07:05

-I mean, that's what we're looking for.

-I haven't forgotten.

0:07:050:07:08

Let's have a look inside.

0:07:080:07:10

-After you, ladies.

-Thank you.

0:07:100:07:12

So, whilst the Reds head inside, the Blues get down to business.

0:07:120:07:16

What I like about it is it's got elements of different cultures

0:07:160:07:20

from around the world.

0:07:200:07:22

Elements of Russia, even Egypt.

0:07:220:07:24

-China.

-China because of the lacquering.

0:07:240:07:27

-Yeah.

-What are we talking about here?

0:07:270:07:29

-There's a price, isn't there?

-Yes.

-Yeah.

0:07:290:07:31

-225.

-225.

0:07:310:07:33

Hmm...

0:07:330:07:34

What would be your best on this?

0:07:340:07:36

Bearing in mind, it's our first look.

0:07:360:07:38

Your very first, yes.

0:07:380:07:40

So, if we spend a lot, it means we won't have...

0:07:400:07:43

Hmm... 125.

0:07:430:07:44

125?

0:07:440:07:46

Could you do 100, do you think?

0:07:460:07:49

-110.

-110?

-Yeah.

0:07:490:07:51

What do you think it might sell for at auction?

0:07:510:07:54

With me in it?

0:07:540:07:55

ALL LAUGH

0:07:550:07:57

Priceless, of course, Gary!

0:07:570:07:59

-What are you thinking?

-Let's put it this way,

0:07:590:08:01

it's not very old.

0:08:010:08:03

I mean, it's been repainted at some point...

0:08:030:08:06

-Yeah.

-..in time.

0:08:060:08:07

But the style is there.

0:08:070:08:10

-What do you reckon?

-But has it caught your attention?

0:08:100:08:13

It's got our attention, yeah.

0:08:130:08:15

So, as it's our first purchase, shall we...?

0:08:150:08:18

-Keep it in the bag?

-Reserve it?

0:08:180:08:19

-A back burner?

-Yeah.

-Yeah, back burner.

0:08:190:08:22

Well, it's a positive start, Blues.

0:08:220:08:25

Let's see if the Reds are having any luck.

0:08:250:08:27

Do you know anything about this?

0:08:270:08:28

-What do you think it's for?

-I think it's for the bathroom.

0:08:280:08:31

Well, close, it was actually for people's bedrooms.

0:08:310:08:34

-Oh, OK.

-Pre-plumbing.

0:08:340:08:35

Mm-hm.

0:08:350:08:37

You'd have your jug of water, take in the bedroom and so then you could

0:08:370:08:41

wash and do your evening cleansing and morning cleansing.

0:08:410:08:46

How old is it?

0:08:460:08:48

Actually, I don't think this one's got a lot of great age.

0:08:480:08:50

-OK.

-I mean, it's made in Staffordshire.

0:08:500:08:52

When you look at it, it is...

0:08:520:08:54

It's desperately clean.

0:08:540:08:56

-Mm... It's too new.

-It's too new.

0:08:560:08:58

It was just made as a decorative object, and so, value wise,

0:08:580:09:02

not that great. Not going to do very well at auction.

0:09:020:09:05

-OK.

-So, I would say, leave that.

0:09:050:09:07

Now, had it been a real period one from around about 1890,

0:09:070:09:10

-then that's a different kettle of fish.

-Yeah.

0:09:100:09:12

With this one, you're looking at about 1990.

0:09:120:09:14

-OK.

-So...

-1990?

0:09:140:09:17

-Yeah.

-Wow, that's new!

0:09:170:09:19

Never mind, team, that's why you have an expert.

0:09:190:09:22

Meanwhile, it's another spot for the Blues.

0:09:220:09:25

-Oh...

-What about that?

0:09:250:09:26

-Oh, no.

-No?

-Not for me.

0:09:270:09:30

Something from the Orient, no?

0:09:300:09:31

-I like it.

-Do you?

0:09:310:09:33

-I do.

-Well, this is where we have a full and frank discussion

0:09:330:09:36

and then we do what she says.

0:09:360:09:37

Very diplomatic, Don.

0:09:370:09:39

I do like it because people have it...

0:09:390:09:41

Exactly, something from the Orient,

0:09:410:09:43

pagoda-shaped, made out of bamboo.

0:09:430:09:46

This kind of bird cage is very hard to find nowadays

0:09:460:09:49

in these proportions.

0:09:490:09:51

-There is something about it.

-Yeah.

0:09:510:09:53

I've seen people kind of have them as, you know,

0:09:530:09:55

for interior decoration, standing in the corner of the room.

0:09:550:09:57

-Exactly, yeah.

-Can we leave that on the back burner, as well?

0:09:570:10:00

-I think it's important that we find out the price.

-Yeah.

-OK.

0:10:000:10:03

-It could sit in somebody's conservatory.

-All right, yeah, OK.

0:10:030:10:06

Can you not see it? How much is this?

0:10:060:10:09

I was looking for around 55.

0:10:090:10:12

What would be your best on it?

0:10:120:10:13

What would be your absolute best?

0:10:130:10:15

I'll take £10 off - 45.

0:10:160:10:20

So, how old do you think it is?

0:10:200:10:21

I've had it in my family for about 20 years.

0:10:210:10:24

It's something probably that came out of the '60s.

0:10:240:10:27

And would it have been made here?

0:10:270:10:29

No, definitely Chinese.

0:10:290:10:31

-What do you think?

-Anyway we could squeeze you down...

0:10:310:10:35

-just a little bit?

-Could you do 35?

0:10:350:10:36

I'll meet you in the middle, 40.

0:10:360:10:38

-How about 39?

-OK, 39!

-39.

-39!

0:10:380:10:41

Is it good for you? It works for you?

0:10:410:10:44

We can do that. Yeah, 39.

0:10:440:10:45

Great, first purchase. Thank you ever so much, thanks!

0:10:450:10:48

You're welcome.

0:10:480:10:50

What was that? You don't want it?

0:10:500:10:52

As I said, full and frank discussion, to quote my old boss,

0:10:520:10:56

full and frank discussion and then do what she says.

0:10:560:10:58

Of course! It's been like that for 30 years, why change?

0:11:000:11:04

Well done, Blues. That's your first item bought in 15 minutes.

0:11:050:11:09

Even if you didn't have much say in that one, Don.

0:11:090:11:12

Back with the Reds and some quality silver is on the table.

0:11:120:11:15

I do like this hair thing with the flowers on it.

0:11:150:11:17

That is lovely.

0:11:170:11:19

So, the dealer's dated it to Birmingham, 1906,

0:11:190:11:23

so coming towards the end of the Art Nouveau period,

0:11:230:11:25

which is wonderful sort of fluid designs.

0:11:250:11:28

And, of course, when you think back to photographs of the

0:11:280:11:30

turn-of-the-century, or the last century,

0:11:300:11:32

big hairstyles, all held up,

0:11:320:11:35

so you've got a lot of hat pins and hair ornaments.

0:11:350:11:37

So you've got your anchor for Birmingham,

0:11:370:11:39

your lion passant - purity, the quality of the silver -

0:11:390:11:42

and then you've got a letter at the end and that dates it to 1906.

0:11:420:11:46

I just think it's a nice thing. Sophia, you like it, don't you?

0:11:460:11:49

-I do really like it.

-You better have a look.

0:11:490:11:51

I think Sophia wants it for herself.

0:11:520:11:54

-I do, yes.

-Well, you can't buy it for yourself.

0:11:540:11:57

It's handmade, isn't it?

0:11:570:11:58

Yeah, absolutely. So, you'd have had a flat piece of silver,

0:11:580:12:01

the design would have been pressed out,

0:12:010:12:03

then it would have been shaped and twisted for the hair,

0:12:030:12:06

the comb prongs,

0:12:060:12:07

and then edging up there, you would find a design for the flowers.

0:12:070:12:10

With an item like that, they would have produced others

0:12:100:12:13

but no two would've been identical because

0:12:130:12:15

of course you've got that nice bit of hand...

0:12:150:12:18

-It's unique.

-Yeah.

0:12:180:12:19

How much do you think this would because it's priced at £68?

0:12:190:12:23

I think it's probably not too far off for auction,

0:12:230:12:26

probably be quite a wide estimate, say £40-£60.

0:12:260:12:28

-Let's see what she says.

-Shall we ask the question?

0:12:280:12:31

I can do £60 on it.

0:12:310:12:32

Would you do £55?

0:12:320:12:35

-I will, yes.

-Brilliant, that's a deal. Thank you.

0:12:350:12:38

Well done, Reds, that one item in 25 minutes.

0:12:380:12:41

But do remember, you're buying for profit, not yourselves.

0:12:410:12:45

I see something here that might have a golden element to it.

0:12:450:12:49

Gold! Look at that colour!

0:12:490:12:51

It's English in style.

0:12:510:12:54

There's a bit of damage, though.

0:12:540:12:56

-Quite a lot of damage there.

-Yes, well, that's all right.

0:12:560:12:59

-It looks like just a hairline crack.

-What is it?

0:12:590:13:03

It's a garden stool, basically.

0:13:030:13:05

-Oh!

-Or something to put a planter on.

-Or a stand.

0:13:050:13:08

What I like about this is the style,

0:13:080:13:11

which derives from the aesthetic movement of the 1860s.

0:13:110:13:16

No signature.

0:13:160:13:18

A bit of damage on the foot.

0:13:180:13:20

-That's fair enough.

-It shows it's used, doesn't it?

0:13:200:13:22

That's exactly, you would expect...

0:13:220:13:24

I would be more worried if there was no damage at all.

0:13:240:13:27

-Yeah.

-But it's certainly got the patination,

0:13:270:13:31

the kind of crazing you would expect resulting from age.

0:13:310:13:35

-Yeah. I love the colour.

-Shall we ask the price?

0:13:350:13:38

-Yeah!

-Do you like it?

-Erm...

0:13:380:13:40

I'm... I'm fluid...

0:13:400:13:42

-You're fluid?

-Fluid?

0:13:420:13:43

All right. Maybe the price might convince you, I don't know.

0:13:430:13:46

-OK.

-Shall we ask?

0:13:460:13:48

-So, who's going to ask this time?

-Whose turn?

0:13:480:13:50

What's your best on this, please?

0:13:500:13:51

80 quid.

0:13:510:13:53

-80 quid.

-Oh...

0:13:530:13:55

That seems a little bit too punchy for me, that.

0:13:550:13:57

I'd like to see it at 50.

0:13:570:13:59

I don't know, I mean...

0:13:590:14:01

-Well, I asked his best...

-Hang on a moment.

0:14:010:14:03

Oh! Oh, all right, go on.

0:14:030:14:06

Now, this is where you don't argue with...

0:14:060:14:08

So, as Carol goes in to beat down the price,

0:14:090:14:12

it's a Bargain Hunt favourite for the Reds.

0:14:120:14:14

Moorcroft is wonderful quality, those lovely colours,

0:14:140:14:17

and it's one of those things which is really popular.

0:14:170:14:19

-Mm-hm.

-And generally does well at auction.

0:14:190:14:22

I do like that little plate with the flower on it.

0:14:220:14:24

-That little one just there?

-Yeah, the yellow flower.

0:14:240:14:26

Do you like that?

0:14:260:14:28

-No.

-No.

0:14:280:14:30

And is there anything, when you look around here, Hannah,

0:14:310:14:33

that you do quite like the look of?

0:14:330:14:35

I don't like the price of anything in here.

0:14:350:14:37

How much is that plate?

0:14:370:14:39

So, that one there is priced at £58.

0:14:390:14:43

I don't think that's worth £58.

0:14:430:14:45

-I think we could get them down to £40.

-I would pay £10.

0:14:450:14:47

-£10!

-But, you see, it's Moorcroft.

-It's a collectable.

0:14:470:14:51

Quality always comes at a price.

0:14:510:14:53

But if you're not sure, time to move on.

0:14:530:14:55

Now, how's Carol getting on with the garden stool?

0:14:550:14:58

Any movement on that £80?

0:14:580:15:00

57!

0:15:000:15:02

57.

0:15:020:15:03

-Yeah?

-Yeah, go on, then!

0:15:030:15:06

-Yes.

-Yes!

0:15:060:15:08

Carol, you realise...you match?

0:15:080:15:11

I do, look at this!

0:15:110:15:13

-Sit down on it.

-OK.

0:15:130:15:14

-There you go.

-Oh!

0:15:140:15:15

-Oh, careful.

-Yes!

0:15:150:15:18

Yay!

0:15:180:15:19

So, the Blues are sitting pretty with that second purchase.

0:15:190:15:22

Some brilliant negotiation skills, Carol.

0:15:220:15:24

35 minutes in and time to leave the teams shopping

0:15:240:15:27

whilst I put you in the picture with an interesting find.

0:15:270:15:31

Here's a pretty still life.

0:15:370:15:38

Now, it's from my personal collection and, not only that,

0:15:380:15:42

it has a personal connection,

0:15:420:15:43

but little did I know it when I bought the piece recently at auction.

0:15:430:15:47

So, here's the story.

0:15:470:15:49

I go into the auction house and I see a painting

0:15:490:15:51

that I love and I hope you'll agree it's not hard to see why.

0:15:510:15:54

The palate is beautiful,

0:15:540:15:56

those cool oranges and blues.

0:15:560:15:59

A touch of the Scottish colourists,

0:15:590:16:01

who loved their compositions of fruit, ceramics and flowers.

0:16:010:16:05

£100-£200 was the estimate and I was lucky,

0:16:050:16:09

there seemed to be very little action

0:16:090:16:11

when the auctioneer put it under the hammer

0:16:110:16:14

and I got it for a mere £45!

0:16:140:16:17

Now, what attracted me to this painting?

0:16:170:16:19

Well, there was just something about it.

0:16:190:16:21

I recognised the palate,

0:16:210:16:23

I recognised the perspective and I just had to have it.

0:16:230:16:27

But the frame was disastrous.

0:16:270:16:29

It looked cramped and there was no slip and it just didn't work,

0:16:290:16:32

so I get the painting home and off the frame comes.

0:16:320:16:36

And the whole time that I've seen this painting hanging,

0:16:360:16:39

there's just something about it that's bugging me.

0:16:390:16:41

I know this painting.

0:16:410:16:43

I know this artist but it's unsigned.

0:16:430:16:46

Well, off comes the frame and what do I discover at the bottom?

0:16:460:16:50

A signature that was obscured by the frame.

0:16:500:16:53

Steen. S-T-E-E-N.

0:16:530:16:57

And the penny drops.

0:16:570:16:58

It may not be a name with which you're familiar

0:16:580:17:00

but it's one with which I'm very familiar.

0:17:000:17:03

Ben Steen.

0:17:030:17:05

Now, he was a Scottish artist,

0:17:050:17:07

didn't make huge waves in his career,

0:17:070:17:09

but he was collected by one very important man -

0:17:090:17:12

my father.

0:17:120:17:14

So, I recognised his signature from other paintings in my household

0:17:140:17:18

and thought, "Wow! How cool is that?

0:17:180:17:21

"I've used my eye to pick out a picture that I recognise from my youth."

0:17:210:17:25

Now, I'm so chuffed that I got a real bargain here for £45, where,

0:17:250:17:30

I think, with this signature, had it not been obscured,

0:17:300:17:33

the auction house might have catalogued it at £150-£250

0:17:330:17:37

and I might well have been willing to pay in-between those two estimates, around £200.

0:17:370:17:42

But the signature, obscured as it was,

0:17:420:17:44

meant it was catalogued as unknown,

0:17:440:17:47

Scottish school, early to mid-20th century.

0:17:470:17:50

And once I get a new frame on this beautiful painting,

0:17:500:17:53

I'll be so proud to hang it on my wall.

0:17:530:17:55

With only 15 minutes left on the clock,

0:17:590:18:01

the Blues have two items in the bag.

0:18:010:18:03

The Reds, however, still have two items to find.

0:18:030:18:05

Time to step it up, teams.

0:18:050:18:07

What's the plan?

0:18:070:18:09

A bit more tricky than I thought

0:18:090:18:10

-because there's so much to see, isn't there?

-Yeah.

0:18:100:18:13

-We want to win, don't we, Sophia?

-Yeah, definitely.

0:18:130:18:15

So, we're still looking for our...

0:18:150:18:16

for our bargain.

0:18:160:18:18

I'm definitely out for leaving Gary about three quid.

0:18:180:18:20

-Well...

-Something like that, a fiver.

0:18:200:18:22

Well, then we need to find the golden egg, don't we?

0:18:220:18:25

Carol, what was the word you've been egged on to say?

0:18:250:18:28

Sausage!

0:18:280:18:30

Of course, sausage,

0:18:300:18:32

that sounds like they owe you another £50 for charity.

0:18:320:18:35

Come on, Reds, you still have a load of lolly.

0:18:350:18:38

What about this brolly?

0:18:380:18:40

Sofia, does it pull up?

0:18:410:18:43

It doesn't stay up.

0:18:430:18:45

-Shall I have a look at it?

-Yeah.

0:18:450:18:47

You've just got to treat it gently, I would've thought.

0:18:470:18:49

-It's beautiful.

-I like that.

0:18:490:18:51

I feel like a fancy lady.

0:18:510:18:53

Right, there is a clip up there.

0:18:530:18:55

Oh, there we go, pop.

0:18:550:18:56

Well, this is Edwardian and the main thing is condition.

0:18:560:18:59

It looks like it's silk and that rots in sunlight.

0:18:590:19:02

We've got this lovely lacework.

0:19:020:19:04

-I think it's lovely.

-I like this.

0:19:040:19:06

Is the handle the original handle?

0:19:060:19:08

I should think that the handle has been repainted,

0:19:080:19:11

it might be replaced.

0:19:110:19:12

But let's see what the price is...

0:19:120:19:14

£40. Well, use your charms.

0:19:140:19:17

-We can always ask...

-Time is short.

0:19:170:19:19

-Sofia?

-What's the best deal you can do for us on this?

0:19:190:19:22

Well, I have to make four on it

0:19:220:19:24

but I'll do you a one-off, no haggling,

0:19:240:19:26

-£30.

-£30?

0:19:260:19:29

-I think that's...

-I think that's, that's a good deal.

0:19:290:19:31

I think you've got to go for it. We are running out of time, girls,

0:19:310:19:33

-because we're down to about ten minutes.

-OK.

-So, come on, girls.

0:19:330:19:36

-Great!

-Thank you.

0:19:360:19:38

Nice one, Reds.

0:19:380:19:39

So that leaves each of our teams with one item left to find.

0:19:390:19:42

Could this be promising for the Blues?

0:19:420:19:45

-Oh...

-What's it made of, then?

0:19:450:19:46

It's some sort of composite stone.

0:19:460:19:48

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

-It's got some sort of receptacle,

0:19:480:19:52

so that tells me right away that it is also a fountain.

0:19:520:19:56

Carol, look behind the sculpture.

0:19:560:19:59

OK.

0:19:590:20:01

Oh!

0:20:010:20:02

-Ah...

-What?

-It's got a signature on it.

0:20:020:20:04

-It's got a signature.

-Oh, right, yeah.

-It's not that old,

0:20:040:20:07

-but it's 1988.

-1988.

0:20:070:20:09

IL that would...

0:20:090:20:11

mean Illinois.

0:20:110:20:12

-Oh, Illinois? Ah...

-It's probably from America.

0:20:120:20:15

-Yeah.

-It's come a long way.

-It's in good order, isn't it?

0:20:150:20:18

It's in good order.

0:20:180:20:19

And we've got our bits from the 1860s.

0:20:190:20:22

We've got our bits from the 1950s, or even earlier.

0:20:220:20:25

What's wrong with 1980?

0:20:250:20:27

-Yeah.

-Shall we ask the price?

0:20:270:20:29

Yeah.

0:20:290:20:30

Sounds good, Gary.

0:20:300:20:32

You get a price and we'll see if the Reds are any closer

0:20:320:20:34

to sealing a deal.

0:20:340:20:36

-I really like this.

-You really like it?

-Yeah.

0:20:360:20:38

Those lift up.

0:20:380:20:40

Your book goes in the middle.

0:20:400:20:42

But you have more books.

0:20:420:20:43

-Oh, that's really cool.

-And it slides out.

0:20:430:20:46

-And...

-I would buy this for myself.

0:20:460:20:48

Remember, Hannah, you're not buying for yourself!

0:20:480:20:50

The nice thing is, you see, it's Black Forest,

0:20:500:20:52

Black Forest in Germany, and it's famed for its woodcarving.

0:20:520:20:56

Just look at the delicacy here on the legs of the heron.

0:20:560:21:00

You know, and the condition is wonderful.

0:21:000:21:02

It's not been broken. It's not had a child play with it,

0:21:020:21:05

just not understanding what it's for.

0:21:050:21:06

Any markings on the other side?

0:21:060:21:08

No, it's just how it's made.

0:21:080:21:10

How do you know it's Black Forest?

0:21:100:21:12

It's the style. The style and the type of timber that's used.

0:21:120:21:15

And...

0:21:150:21:16

This is just... It is always...

0:21:160:21:18

They come from the Black Forest, trust me.

0:21:180:21:20

-I think it's a nice thing.

-I really like it, but I don't like the price.

0:21:200:21:23

-We're very short on time. Well...

-It's £165.

0:21:230:21:25

-I don't like the price.

-Well...

0:21:250:21:27

I've got to tell you that these always do do well at auction.

0:21:270:21:31

We're short on time.

0:21:310:21:32

-You do actually like it.

-I love it.

0:21:320:21:34

-And you did start off saying, "I want to buy something I like."

-Yes.

0:21:340:21:37

Something you'd own.

0:21:370:21:39

The best thing you can do is ask the dealer what his best price is

0:21:390:21:43

and see how you do, but I think it's a good thing.

0:21:430:21:45

OK.

0:21:450:21:46

So, what is your best price?

0:21:460:21:48

I'm looking for around 145 for it.

0:21:480:21:50

Could you do 120?

0:21:500:21:52

No, I can't do that, no.

0:21:520:21:54

I'll go to 140.

0:21:540:21:56

-What do you think, Sof?

-135?

0:21:560:21:58

-135?

-Yeah, 135.

0:21:580:22:00

-Oh, go on, then.

-Oh, brilliant.

-Oh, go on, then. Thank you.

0:22:000:22:02

Well, it's your third item bought.

0:22:020:22:05

You've done it.

0:22:050:22:07

There we go.

0:22:070:22:08

Third and final item with five minutes left on the clock.

0:22:080:22:11

Good work, Reds. Which just leaves the Blues in the balance.

0:22:110:22:15

He's come down to 120.

0:22:150:22:17

-Right.

-OK.

0:22:170:22:18

And?

0:22:180:22:20

Can we not squeeze another tenner out here?

0:22:200:22:22

-I just... It's just...

-To be honest, that was the bottom line.

0:22:220:22:25

I... The... I could do 119.

0:22:250:22:28

-Well...

-It's a little bit off,

0:22:300:22:31

but it has been drastically reduced at that.

0:22:310:22:34

This design here is designed to enhance the sound of water flowing.

0:22:340:22:39

-Oh, yeah.

-So it flows through the pipe and it obviously goes

0:22:390:22:41

round and back on itself.

0:22:410:22:43

And, as I say, it's all been designed to create

0:22:430:22:46

the most atmosphere you can get...

0:22:460:22:49

from what is a small water fountain.

0:22:490:22:52

He's certainly selling it.

0:22:520:22:53

Would you go 115?

0:22:530:22:55

-Go on, then.

-Yes!

0:22:580:22:59

-Thank you very much.

-He's got a bargain!

0:22:590:23:03

-Thank you.

-Thank you very much. I appreciate it.

0:23:030:23:06

HOOTER

0:23:060:23:07

Oh, dear, teams. Looks like your time's up.

0:23:070:23:09

One, two, three, done.

0:23:090:23:10

Let's remind ourselves what the Red team bought.

0:23:110:23:14

Their first item was a silver hair comb.

0:23:140:23:17

Price paid - £55.

0:23:170:23:18

Next up, there was nothing shady about this deal.

0:23:200:23:22

The parasol cost them £30.

0:23:220:23:25

And finally, the book slide set them back £135.

0:23:250:23:29

Well, Sofia, Hannah, well done.

0:23:290:23:32

I was worried at the beginning there,

0:23:320:23:34

but you took some decisive action

0:23:340:23:36

and three items within the 60 minutes.

0:23:360:23:38

Well done. Sofia, which is your favourite item?

0:23:380:23:41

Probably the silver hair ornament.

0:23:410:23:43

It's something that I would buy and wear myself,

0:23:430:23:45

so I hope that somebody at the auction feels the same about it.

0:23:450:23:48

But do you think it's going to bring the biggest profit?

0:23:480:23:50

I can only hope so.

0:23:500:23:52

Either that or the wooden book slide I think will bring the biggest.

0:23:520:23:55

-Ah, that was Mum's choice, wasn't it?

-Yeah, it was.

0:23:550:23:58

Hannah, is the book slide your favourite?

0:23:580:23:59

That's my favourite item, the Black Forest book slide.

0:23:590:24:02

But it was your biggest splurge, so do you think it's going to bring a great profit?

0:24:020:24:05

I would buy it.

0:24:050:24:07

Now, you've spent a good chunk.

0:24:070:24:09

£220. I'm proud of you, ladies.

0:24:090:24:12

But who's got £80?

0:24:120:24:13

-I do.

-OK, Sofia, I'll take it from you and I'll hand it to Ben.

0:24:130:24:17

Not a huge amount, so do you have any ideas

0:24:170:24:19

what you'll do with your budget?

0:24:190:24:21

Well, I think I might see if I can find something suitably feminine

0:24:210:24:25

for such wonderful ladies.

0:24:250:24:26

Oh, well, on that note,

0:24:260:24:28

we'll leave Ben to find his feminine side and we'll remind ourselves what

0:24:280:24:31

the Blue team bought.

0:24:310:24:33

First up, the bamboo bird cage cost them £39.

0:24:330:24:37

Their second item was a garden pottery stool.

0:24:380:24:41

Price paid - £57.

0:24:410:24:43

And finally they got into the flow of things with a water feature.

0:24:430:24:46

It cost them £115.

0:24:460:24:48

Well, Carol, Don, I think we can safely say, Carol,

0:24:500:24:53

-you're still the boss.

-I am.

0:24:530:24:55

You drove that, didn't you?

0:24:550:24:56

Now, tell me, of the three items that you bought, Carol,

0:24:560:24:59

which is your favourite?

0:24:590:25:01

I'm torn between two, but I think probably the fountain.

0:25:010:25:04

-The fountain.

-I just like the shape.

0:25:040:25:06

-OK.

-I was torn between that shape and the colour of...

0:25:060:25:09

of the stool, so... But I think the fountain is my favourite.

0:25:090:25:11

So probably your most modern purchase?

0:25:110:25:13

-Yes.

-OK, and do you think it's going to bring the biggest profit?

0:25:130:25:16

-Cos I think it was your biggest splurge.

-Biggest splurge.

0:25:160:25:18

-No.

-No, it's not?

0:25:180:25:20

Looking back, I think maybe the bird cage will make the most profit.

0:25:200:25:23

-OK, the bamboo bird cage.

-Yeah.

0:25:230:25:25

OK, and do you agree with that, Don? Biggest profit in the bird cage?

0:25:250:25:28

I think... No, I don't think so.

0:25:280:25:30

I think the fountain will be the biggest profit.

0:25:300:25:32

Really? It's going to be a showpiece at the auction.

0:25:320:25:35

And which of the three is your favourite?

0:25:350:25:37

-Definitely the fountain.

-The fountain all round?

0:25:370:25:40

-That's my...

-OK, fantastic.

0:25:400:25:41

Well, fingers crossed with the fountain.

0:25:410:25:43

So, remind me, you spent 200 and...

0:25:430:25:46

-11.

-£11.

0:25:460:25:47

-You spent big.

-We tried.

0:25:470:25:49

-We tried.

-I was desperate to leave him a fiver, but we couldn't...

0:25:490:25:51

-Couldn't quite...

-Get in there in time, so...

0:25:510:25:54

So, 211 means £89 for Gary.

0:25:540:25:56

-It does.

-So I'll take it just now.

0:25:560:25:58

-There you go.

-Thank you very much.

0:25:580:26:00

-Mr Pe.

-Oh, well.

0:26:000:26:01

What are you thinking?

0:26:010:26:03

£89 in the bank.

0:26:030:26:04

Well, I'm thinking...

0:26:040:26:06

We've got something from China, something from Britain,

0:26:060:26:09

something from America,

0:26:090:26:12

so perhaps something from another country, perhaps another style.

0:26:120:26:16

Hmm, intriguing.

0:26:160:26:18

So, while Gary goes global, it's time for us to head to the auction.

0:26:180:26:22

We've arrived safely in Litchfield

0:26:320:26:34

and I find myself in the company of Richard Winterton.

0:26:340:26:36

Thank you for having us.

0:26:360:26:38

It's a pleasure. Welcome to our cathedral city.

0:26:380:26:40

Yes, yes, yes, the famous cathedral of Litchfield,

0:26:400:26:42

perhaps we will make some famous prices today.

0:26:420:26:45

But it all depends on what they've bought,

0:26:450:26:47

so let's start with Hannah and Sofia, with this hair clip.

0:26:470:26:50

What do you think? Is it pretty enough to get the competition going?

0:26:500:26:54

-I'm sure it will.

-We've got 15 to 20.

0:26:540:26:56

OK, well, the girls were taken by the fact that it's so pretty...

0:26:560:26:59

-Yeah, OK.

-It's pierced, it's older...

-Yeah.

-£55 they paid.

0:26:590:27:03

It could well get to that.

0:27:030:27:04

It has got the look. I could see someone paying some money for that.

0:27:040:27:07

OK. Cool. Well, we're sticking with the Edwardian era, in fact,

0:27:070:27:10

cos next up is our parasol, with a slightly dodgy handle.

0:27:100:27:14

-Slightly?

-OK, very dodgy handle.

0:27:140:27:17

Yeah. But that aside, it's got some age to it.

0:27:170:27:20

I mean, it's the kind of thing a theatrical group might buy.

0:27:200:27:24

-Yeah.

-Something like that. A bit of am-dram about it.

0:27:240:27:26

-Yeah.

-OK, is it going to have a dramatic estimate?

0:27:260:27:28

-We've got 20 to 30.

-Well, the ladies paid 30.

0:27:280:27:31

-OK.

-So that's all right.

0:27:310:27:32

-OK.

-But in that case,

0:27:320:27:34

it means that all hopes are probably pinned on this gorgeous Black Forest

0:27:340:27:38

book slide. Let's open it up.

0:27:380:27:40

Let's show it in all its glory because it is a gorgeous thing.

0:27:400:27:43

Slightly earlier than our parasol and hair comb.

0:27:430:27:46

It's Black Forest, that would have its following because it holds the

0:27:460:27:50

books, that has its following.

0:27:500:27:52

-Yeah, I love it.

-What do you think it's going to make at auction?

0:27:520:27:55

I think I'm being a bit mean and we've put 40 to 50,

0:27:550:27:58

and I think it will probably get well above that

0:27:580:28:01

-because it's a good quality thing.

-OK.

-Top end of that.

0:28:010:28:04

So you say you hope it will get well above 50.

0:28:040:28:07

We need it to make well above £135.

0:28:070:28:11

-OK.

-Is that too tall an order?

0:28:110:28:12

I think so. It's all the money, that, isn't it?

0:28:120:28:14

It's all the money. Well, in that case,

0:28:140:28:16

let's find out what Ben bought as a bonus buy.

0:28:160:28:19

Sofia, Hannah, I applaud you for spending so much at the fair,

0:28:200:28:23

but maybe you are a bit nervous now because you only left Ben with £80.

0:28:230:28:27

He wanted to buy you something super feminine to continue that theme.

0:28:270:28:30

Ben, did you succeed on such a small budget?

0:28:300:28:33

I think I did.

0:28:330:28:34

A silver brooch.

0:28:350:28:37

It's Scandinavian, which is very popular at the moment.

0:28:370:28:39

Designed by Carl Ove, I think that's how you pronounce his name.

0:28:390:28:43

-What do you think?

-I like it.

0:28:430:28:45

-I like it as well.

-Cute and small.

0:28:450:28:47

-And wearable.

-It is. I think that's lovely.

0:28:470:28:51

-Quite light though, are you sure it's silver?

-Positive!

0:28:510:28:54

Do you want to test it in the lab or will you be satisfied with the mark?

0:28:550:28:59

You're holding it, you're examining it.

0:28:590:29:01

Sofia, would you wear it, that's the question?

0:29:010:29:03

I think I would.

0:29:030:29:04

How much did you spend on it?

0:29:040:29:06

What do you reckon?

0:29:060:29:07

£20.

0:29:070:29:08

-A bit more.

-I think a bit higher than that, 50?

0:29:080:29:11

-38.

-Oh, right, that's a reasonable amount.

0:29:110:29:13

I think that's something we would consider.

0:29:130:29:15

How much do you think we would make on it in the auction?

0:29:150:29:18

I would like to see it go for in the region of £40 to £50.

0:29:180:29:22

-It's a bargain.

-Great.

0:29:220:29:25

I'm glad it's a bargain because that's what we're supposed to be hunting for. But, don't worry,

0:29:250:29:28

it's not time to make your mind up about the brooch just yet but it is

0:29:280:29:32

time to find out what Richard Winterton, our auctioneer,

0:29:320:29:35

thinks of the brooch.

0:29:350:29:36

Well, we've had Edwardian silver,

0:29:370:29:39

but here is slightly later 20th-century silver.

0:29:390:29:42

Danish. We know the maker - Carl Ove.

0:29:420:29:45

It's really pretty. Surely you're going to have lots of bidders for this?

0:29:450:29:48

I think we will. Anything with Danish,

0:29:480:29:50

they all get excited about it, don't they?

0:29:500:29:52

So if you want a leaf brooch sitting on your lapel, then great.

0:29:520:29:56

-For how much?

-You'll think I'm being mean now at 15 to 20, won't you?

0:29:560:29:59

I think you're being a wee tad mean because £38 was paid by Ben and I

0:29:590:30:03

-think he's done quite well.

-He has done well.

0:30:030:30:05

To be fair, he has done well.

0:30:050:30:07

We'll forgive you, we'll say you're not being mean,

0:30:070:30:09

-it's just a come get me price.

-Yes.

-That's all it is.

0:30:090:30:11

Well, the Blues, the competition,

0:30:110:30:13

won't want the price to go too high, so let's see what they've got.

0:30:130:30:16

We'll start off with their first item,

0:30:160:30:18

this grand, bamboo, pagoda-style bird cage.

0:30:180:30:22

Do you think your buyers will have a home for this?

0:30:220:30:25

Are you lost for words?

0:30:260:30:28

I am lost for words.

0:30:280:30:29

Is that going to reflect positively or negatively in your estimate?

0:30:290:30:32

-We've gone 20 to 30.

-OK, well, the team paid £39.

0:30:320:30:36

-OK.

-So they've done all right.

0:30:360:30:37

-Yeah.

-You still look bamboozled by the bamboo.

0:30:370:30:41

-It's one of those, isn't it?

-Let's move on.

0:30:410:30:43

Now we've still got some bamboo present,

0:30:430:30:46

but this time in the form of pottery - our Minton garden stool.

0:30:460:30:50

It's not in perfect condition but it's still a nice thing, isn't it?

0:30:500:30:53

-It invokes an era.

-It does and it's something that

0:30:530:30:55

eight to ten years ago would have been doing well, wouldn't it?

0:30:550:30:59

It would have had a nought on the end of what I'm going to tell you.

0:30:590:31:02

We've got 20 to 30, but I think it would have been flying a few years ago.

0:31:020:31:06

-Really? It has just fallen out of fashion?

-It has, really.

0:31:060:31:08

OK, the team paid £57 for it.

0:31:080:31:12

OK. I'm not surprised.

0:31:120:31:14

No, but you think it might be too much of an ask?

0:31:140:31:16

-Yeah.

-OK, so what about item number three?

0:31:160:31:20

A slightly sort of Georgia O'Keeffe-esque

0:31:200:31:23

water feature in the form of an orchid,

0:31:230:31:26

concrete, modern.

0:31:260:31:28

It's commercial. I'm quite sure people will like a water feature

0:31:280:31:32

and it's got a bit more about it.

0:31:320:31:33

Yeah, it's got half a chance.

0:31:330:31:34

I think we'll certainly get one or two people after this.

0:31:340:31:37

How much do you think they're going to spend?

0:31:370:31:39

-We've got 30 to 40.

-30 to 40? OK, well,

0:31:390:31:41

we need you to really psyche them up because they paid £115

0:31:410:31:45

for said water feature.

0:31:450:31:48

I don't know, I'm a bit worried for the Blues.

0:31:480:31:50

We've got no great, exciting estimates for their items,

0:31:500:31:53

so here's hoping that Gary has bought them a great

0:31:530:31:56

and exciting bonus buy. Let's find out what it is.

0:31:560:31:59

Don, Carol, you left Gary £89.

0:32:000:32:04

You wanted to leave less, didn't you, Don?

0:32:040:32:06

I would have liked to have left him with a fiver!

0:32:060:32:08

Well, in that case, you were awfully generous with £89.

0:32:080:32:11

But are you starting to wonder what's beneath those blue cloths?

0:32:110:32:14

I think we can figure it out, can't we?

0:32:140:32:16

Gary, show us what we all think is underneath there.

0:32:160:32:18

Let me take you to the city of Vienna.

0:32:180:32:21

-Oh.

-Wow!

0:32:210:32:23

The year's 1903 to about 1910,

0:32:230:32:27

when the city was going through a bit of an artistic revolution -

0:32:270:32:31

Viennese secession.

0:32:310:32:33

A very famous architect, Josef Hoffmann, designed these chairs.

0:32:330:32:39

Gary, you're doing a big build-up but they still look like pub chairs!

0:32:390:32:42

LAUGHTER

0:32:420:32:43

Exactly. The pub chairs of today took its inspiration from this.

0:32:430:32:48

So, how much did you spend?

0:32:480:32:50

-Guess.

-I'd say about 50.

0:32:500:32:53

30.

0:32:530:32:55

I'm liking them a bit more.

0:32:550:32:56

-I'm liking them a bit more.

-So, what do you think they're going to make?

0:32:560:32:59

Originals of this go for thousands.

0:32:590:33:01

I think this is a reproduction for at least 100.

0:33:010:33:05

Wow! Let's hope they do because

0:33:050:33:08

at least we might make a profit on one thing!

0:33:080:33:11

Well, you never know how it's going to go, Don.

0:33:120:33:14

Don't be pessimistic and it sounds like Gary's got high hopes for these

0:33:140:33:18

chairs. So let's find out if Richard Winterton, our auctioneer,

0:33:180:33:21

has high hopes, too.

0:33:210:33:23

So, to add to the Blues' collection,

0:33:230:33:25

Gary has bought these chairs and do you think they're a pretty pair

0:33:250:33:29

or are they pretty sad?

0:33:290:33:30

I have to say, they don't float my boat tremendously.

0:33:300:33:33

But they have a bit of style to them and I quite like that black lacquer.

0:33:330:33:36

-Really?

-Yeah, I do.

0:33:360:33:38

So you quite like the chairs.

0:33:380:33:40

Is that reflected in your estimate?

0:33:400:33:42

-20 to 30.

-20 to 30?

0:33:420:33:43

Well, Gary has done quite well because he got the pair for £30.

0:33:430:33:47

-OK.

-So it's going to be all right but generally, overall,

0:33:470:33:51

I'm quite worried for our teams today.

0:33:510:33:52

-Are you nervous?

0:33:520:33:54

Well, you've always got your work cut out as an auctioneer,

0:33:540:33:57

0:34:020:34:04

All done?

0:34:040:34:05

Hannah, Sofia, can you feel the atmosphere?

0:34:050:34:08

Can you feel the profits?

0:34:080:34:10

Are they there to be made, do you reckon?

0:34:100:34:12

Fingers crossed.

0:34:120:34:14

You've gone very girlie.

0:34:140:34:15

0:34:340:34:36

£25 I'm bid.

0:34:360:34:37

0:34:370:34:39

0:34:450:34:48

You've started with a loss.

0:34:480:34:49

£25 of a loss.

0:34:490:34:51

It sold for 30 and you paid 55,

0:34:510:34:54

so this Edwardian parasol has work to do.

0:34:540:34:57

You paid 30 for it. Here we go.

0:34:570:34:59

£6 I'm bid.

0:34:590:35:00

£8 I'm bid. At £8 I'm bid.

0:35:000:35:03

£10, the internet. £20, the internet.

0:35:030:35:06

-£20, the internet.

-Oh, come on.

0:35:060:35:08

All done, £20? The room is out.

0:35:080:35:11

£20, all done?

0:35:110:35:13

He's going.

0:35:130:35:14

Oh, no.

0:35:140:35:15

That lost £10.

0:35:150:35:17

Overall, minus 35.

0:35:170:35:19

It's all on the book slide.

0:35:190:35:22

-Come on.

-You paid 135.

0:35:220:35:24

£60, I'm bid.

0:35:240:35:27

At £60, the internet.

0:35:270:35:28

-Oh, no.

-At £60.

0:35:280:35:31

-It's got to be worth more than that.

-At £60.

0:35:310:35:33

£60, the internet.

0:35:330:35:34

All done? Selling at 60.

0:35:340:35:37

Oi, oi, oi. £60.

0:35:370:35:39

That sold for 60, that is a loss on that item of 75.

0:35:390:35:43

You had already lost 35.

0:35:430:35:46

So, ladies, you're minus £110.

0:35:460:35:49

However, there could be a saving grace because...

0:35:490:35:52

-We'll take the bonus buy.

-Oh, right, OK.

0:35:520:35:54

That was going to be my next question.

0:35:540:35:56

-We'd already decided.

-We're going to have to take it.

0:35:560:35:59

The silver brooch, it's got some work to do.

0:35:590:36:01

Ben paid £38 for it.

0:36:010:36:03

Do you think it could make a dent in your...?

0:36:030:36:05

Nothing like pressure, is there?

0:36:060:36:08

Ladies, you are going for the bonus buy?

0:36:080:36:11

-Definitely.

-OK.

0:36:110:36:12

Lovely little brooch now.

0:36:120:36:13

Two, four, six, eight.

0:36:130:36:15

£8 I'm bid. At £8 I'm bid.

0:36:150:36:18

£10 I'm bid. £12 I'm bid.

0:36:180:36:20

£15. £18.

0:36:200:36:22

£20 in the doorway.

0:36:220:36:24

£20 in the doorway.

0:36:240:36:25

At £20 I'm bid.

0:36:250:36:27

At £20 I'm bid.

0:36:270:36:28

All done here at £20.

0:36:280:36:30

Doorway at £20.

0:36:300:36:31

£20 away.

0:36:310:36:33

All done? Hammer up, selling, £20.

0:36:330:36:36

Oh, ladies!

0:36:360:36:38

I think it's called P45 time.

0:36:380:36:40

It was the kiss of death.

0:36:410:36:43

It sold for £20, which means, Ben, there was a wee loss, minus 18,

0:36:430:36:48

and overall a loss of £128.

0:36:480:36:54

I mean, if you're going to lose money, lose money in style,

0:36:540:36:58

-that's the way to do it.

-Exactly!

0:36:580:37:00

Right, Don, Carol, Gary, and who is this?

0:37:070:37:10

Scruffy, this is Scruffy.

0:37:100:37:12

Scruffy, and what's the story of Scruffy?

0:37:120:37:14

On behalf of the charity that helps us...we need him to be on TV.

0:37:140:37:18

OK...

0:37:180:37:19

Now wait a minute, is this the 60 things to do?

0:37:190:37:22

60 things to do before 60 - to be on TV - and to make sure we don't lose.

0:37:220:37:26

OK, well, hopefully Scruffy is going to be your lucky charm.

0:37:260:37:29

Tell me, you're in the room, do you feel the atmosphere?

0:37:290:37:32

-Does it feel good to you?

-It feels good.

0:37:320:37:34

I've never been to an auction before.

0:37:340:37:37

-Never before?

-No, never.

0:37:370:37:39

A new experience for us.

0:37:390:37:41

-I would imagine this is Scruffy's first time as well.

-Definitely.

0:37:410:37:44

That's why we have to hold his paws, he's anxious.

0:37:440:37:47

Don't be anxious, you've got three quality items here.

0:37:470:37:50

The first one is going to be our bird cage,

0:37:500:37:53

that Pagoda-style bird cage.

0:37:530:37:55

You paid £39 for it. Are you feeling confident,

0:37:550:37:57

-now the time has come?

-I think this will be our least loss.

0:37:570:38:02

-OK, the smallest loss.

-The smallest loss.

0:38:020:38:05

OK, well, hopefully it will make some profit.

0:38:050:38:08

You paid £39, here it comes.

0:38:080:38:10

Now we've go to 381, a bamboo bird cage.

0:38:100:38:13

Start me 50, 40, 20.

0:38:130:38:15

Nothing on my book at all.

0:38:150:38:17

-A tenner to go.

-Something.

0:38:170:38:19

A fiver.

0:38:190:38:21

Five, six, eight, ten.

0:38:210:38:22

£10 down here.

0:38:220:38:24

-At £10 I'm at.

-Just one more.

0:38:240:38:26

-Here at ten.

-Please.

-Anyone else going to come in?

0:38:260:38:28

All going at £10.

0:38:280:38:30

No-one else?

0:38:300:38:31

OK, £10.

0:38:330:38:35

You've lost £29 on the first item, so it's all now on our garden stool,

0:38:370:38:42

the Minton-style one, £57 paid.

0:38:420:38:45

We are ten, we are 15, we're £20.

0:38:450:38:47

£20 I'm bid. At £20 I'm bid.

0:38:470:38:49

At £20 I'm bid. On the book at £20.

0:38:490:38:52

At £20.

0:38:520:38:53

Come on, it's definitely worth it.

0:38:530:38:55

At £20. Selling at 20.

0:38:550:38:58

Oh, OK, £20.

0:38:580:39:00

It's not going to plan, Blues.

0:39:000:39:02

That's a loss of 37, which means,

0:39:020:39:05

add to the first loss, minus 66,

0:39:050:39:08

so all hopes pinned on the £115 water feature. Here it comes.

0:39:080:39:12

Lot 383, £20 I'm bid.

0:39:120:39:15

The water feature at £20.

0:39:150:39:17

At £20.

0:39:170:39:18

Five. 25. 25.

0:39:180:39:20

£30.

0:39:200:39:21

-It's got a name.

-At £30.

-It's got a name.

0:39:210:39:24

Sold at 30.

0:39:240:39:27

Oh, it hurts.

0:39:270:39:29

It hurts.

0:39:290:39:30

£30.

0:39:300:39:32

It means that it's lost £85,

0:39:320:39:34

so overall, Blues, minus 151.

0:39:340:39:40

What is Scruffy thinking?

0:39:400:39:41

Scruffy, what do you think of that?

0:39:410:39:43

Oh.

0:39:430:39:45

Right, are you going to go with the armchairs?

0:39:450:39:48

-Definitely.

-If you lose, you may as well lose big.

0:39:480:39:52

-OK, so 100% going with the bonus buy?

-Yes.

0:39:520:39:55

OK, Blues, let me tell you, Gary paid £30.

0:39:550:39:59

The auctioneer thinks they could make £30.

0:39:590:40:01

-So...

-Break even.

0:40:010:40:03

We really need to hope that the bidders want to pay more.

0:40:030:40:06

Here we go.

0:40:060:40:08

The armchairs. £5 I'm bid.

0:40:080:40:09

£8 I'm bid.

0:40:090:40:10

£10 I'm bid.

0:40:100:40:11

£10 I'm bid. 15 on the internet.

0:40:110:40:14

£20 bid. £25 bid.

0:40:140:40:16

-Oh.

-Come on.

0:40:160:40:18

25, the internet. 25 the internet.

0:40:180:40:21

-Come on, one more!

-25 the internet.

0:40:210:40:23

All done? Selling at 25.

0:40:230:40:26

£25.

0:40:280:40:29

Right, well, we might as well add to that loss.

0:40:290:40:33

Another loss of £5.

0:40:330:40:35

The chairs sold for 25, which means that overall, Blues,

0:40:350:40:38

minus 156.

0:40:380:40:42

Yes!

0:40:420:40:44

I don't think you should be cheering.

0:40:440:40:46

I think it's a bit of a sad result but you're only here once.

0:40:460:40:50

You gave it your best shot.

0:40:500:40:51

-We did.

-How are you feeling?

0:40:510:40:53

-We got Scruffy on television.

-We did.

0:40:530:40:56

OK. So minus 156,

0:40:560:41:00

it sounds bad but it could be a winning score.

0:41:000:41:04

In which universe?

0:41:040:41:06

I don't know, in the Bargain Hunt universe.

0:41:060:41:08

So don't be too despondent,

0:41:080:41:09

-just promise me you'll say nothing to the Reds.

-Absolutely.

-OK.

0:41:090:41:13

Now, teams, I know that auction can be a cruel mistress sometimes but,

0:41:220:41:26

really, she was extra mean today.

0:41:260:41:30

Oh, dear.

0:41:300:41:31

Eight items went under the hammer and not one made a profit.

0:41:310:41:36

Not one, not even breaking even.

0:41:360:41:38

Nothing, losses all around.

0:41:380:41:41

Anyway, you all showed us how to lose money in style.

0:41:410:41:45

But the team that lost less today

0:41:450:41:49

and therefore are, by proxy, the winners...

0:41:490:41:52

But can we really call you the winners?

0:41:520:41:54

The Reds, you're the winners, well done!

0:41:560:41:59

With a loss of 128.

0:41:590:42:03

Blues, you're our runners up today with a loss of 156.

0:42:030:42:06

It was good fun.

0:42:060:42:08

Scruffy was meant to be a good luck charm but, in fact...

0:42:080:42:12

He's leading the walk of shame.

0:42:120:42:14

He proved to be the opposite but well done to you, Blues,

0:42:140:42:17

for being such good sports

0:42:170:42:19

and of course for working for charity and bringing Scruffy along.

0:42:190:42:22

Thank you very much.

0:42:220:42:23

But, Reds, I don't think you can believe it.

0:42:230:42:25

You are today's winners.

0:42:250:42:27

Yes! Weird, right?

0:42:270:42:29

Listen, I think that probably you should stick to the laboratory,

0:42:290:42:32

that's all I'm going to say.

0:42:320:42:33

I think that science is more your thing than antiques.

0:42:330:42:36

So I've got nothing to give any of you, except my thanks.

0:42:360:42:39

Thank you so much for coming along and for being such good sports.

0:42:390:42:42

-Have you enjoyed it?

-Definitely.

0:42:420:42:43

Excellent, a memory to take with you in the future, perhaps into space,

0:42:430:42:47

-you never know.

-You never know.

0:42:470:42:49

Well, we all had fun today and if you're at home thinking,
