Vic. It is only flipping One Direction! | :04:20. | :04:26.
Thanks. Lads, I can not believe we're standing in the Queen Vic. It | :04:27. | :04:30.
is a charity we hold close to our hearts. We were first here in 2011 | :04:31. | :04:37.
performing What makes You Beautiful. Last year we performed on the show. | :04:38. | :04:42.
With our performance earlier that makes a hat trick. | :04:43. | :04:53.
You're going to meet Sam, he's just brilliant. | :04:54. | :04:56.
And you're going to meet Ember. She's pretty fabulous too. | :04:57. | :05:00.
It's been really, really hard to make friends. | :05:01. | :05:03.
I'm just a bit nervous about introducing myself to new people. | :05:04. | :05:07.
People think because he speaks well, that there's absolutely no problem. | :05:08. | :05:12.
I've got a condition called auditory neuropathy, | :05:13. | :05:17.
which means you start off profoundly deaf | :05:18. | :05:19.
and then you regain a little bit of your hearing. | :05:20. | :05:23.
Sam was less confident in social situations, so at parties, | :05:24. | :05:29.
for example, Isabel and Edward would go straight in there | :05:30. | :05:31.
and Sam said to me, "I'm not going." | :05:32. | :05:34.
so I just felt really like I wanted to help him but I couldn't. | :05:35. | :05:40.
He was scared and he didn't know where we were. | :05:41. | :05:46.
I can't hear my parents talking downstairs or the TV being on. | :05:47. | :05:50.
I think Sam's record was 27 times I put him back to bed, | :05:51. | :05:55.
Certainly when he started school, he'd have an annual report, | :05:56. | :06:03.
and in that, it was always mentioned that he was so tired. | :06:04. | :06:06.
I can only imagine how difficult it is for him. | :06:07. | :06:10.
Two years ago, Sam met someone very special. | :06:11. | :06:16.
Literally, that first week, I was stunned about the difference. | :06:17. | :06:24.
She is one of over 750 highly trained hearing dogs in the UK. | :06:25. | :06:34.
Thanks to you, dogs like Ember can support deaf children | :06:35. | :06:37.
in their daily lives and alert them to potential dangers. | :06:38. | :06:42.
She does give him that sense of security and safety. | :06:43. | :06:45.
He has always been very scared of fire, | :06:46. | :06:47.
because he can't hear smoke alarms. So that's what Ember does. | :06:48. | :06:51.
SMOKE ALARM BEEPS She nudges his leg | :06:52. | :06:54.
and she drops to the floor, and she'll wait till he responds. | :06:55. | :06:57.
I think Sam's confidence has improved hugely | :06:58. | :06:59.
He's incredibly proud of her, and in the past, where he'd hang back, | :07:00. | :07:04.
if people ask him questions about Ember, he'll say, "That's my dog." | :07:05. | :07:08.
But the biggest difference we saw was sleep. | :07:09. | :07:15.
From that first week, Sam slept through. | :07:16. | :07:19.
I couldn't believe that having a dog sleeping in your bedroom | :07:20. | :07:22.
She helps him have a happy childhood, | :07:23. | :07:27.
and that's what every parent wants for their child. | :07:28. | :07:30.
It's kind of scary what life would be like without Ember | :07:31. | :07:34.
and without hearing dogs, because she changed my life a lot. | :07:35. | :07:40.
She does her job really, really, really well. | :07:41. | :07:43.
100%, she's part of the family now. She's brill. | :07:44. | :07:47.
She's my best friend, because I know she's always there for me. | :07:48. | :07:50.
Thanks to you, Sam has a new best friend | :07:51. | :07:55.
that has made him feel happy and safe. | :07:56. | :07:58.
Please help us start more very special partnerships. | :07:59. | :08:01.
There are many more children who could benefit. You can pick up the | :08:02. | :08:21.
phone and call 03457332233. Last night you may have watched Children | :08:22. | :08:27.
In Need Rocks concert, but you may not have seen some of the material. | :08:28. | :08:31.

I love those boys! Next on our bill tonight, performing Beautiful War. | :19:42. | :20:10.
Please give it up - I have never said that before - I suddenly feel | :20:11. | :20:13.
young - for Kings of Leon. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | :20:14. | :25:30.
Now, I am sure you agree Children In Need Rocks has been bigger and | :25:31. | :25:35.
better than ever ever before! Thank you Gary Barlow - the stars were out | :25:36. | :25:40.
tonight. To prove it, let's go back to One Direction! | :25:41. | :25:49.
Thanks to Chris and Fern for hosting, thanks to Gary Barlow for | :25:50. | :25:53.
putting on an amazing show and thank you to all the acts. This has been a | :25:54. | :25:56.
vintage year for Children In Need. It is you at home who will keep it | :25:57. | :26:01.
going. We thank you very much. We have others to thank too! Staff at B | :26:02. | :26:08.
and Q have encouraged local kids to turn DIY into PIY. That is Pudsey it | :26:09. | :26:14.
yourself. Like this lot who make their own Pudsey coat pegs. They | :26:15. | :26:19.
have turned paint into Pudsey pounds. Stores got messy with their | :26:20. | :26:27.
helping hands walls. Painted faces are fine here - at the round table's | :26:28. | :26:32.
fund-raising day in Cardiff, where a carting competition helped to | :26:33. | :26:37.
collect cart-loads of cash! And a massive thanks to the staff at | :26:38. | :26:41.
Debenhams, where it was all about about the confidence, as kids | :26:42. | :26:48.
strutted their stuff Pudsey-style, with a catwalk show. | :26:49. | :26:50.
You go, guys! Every penny is spent here in the UK. | :26:51. | :27:06.
Next, to Scot lands to hear about a project which has changed the lives | :27:07. | :27:08.
of a family there. a young Scottish boy called Sam | :27:09. | :27:18.
and his family. Sam has severe autism. Last year, | :27:19. | :27:21.
his family reached breaking point. But they then found a project | :27:22. | :27:24.
funded by your donations, and what a difference it's made | :27:25. | :27:27.
to all of them. Sam's very lovable. When he smiles, | :27:28. | :27:31.
it lights the room up. He's on the lower half | :27:32. | :27:35.
of the autistic spectrum, You have to speak in very short | :27:36. | :27:38.
sentences when you speak to him, so that he just grasps | :27:39. | :27:44.
the main points of the sentence. You can't use too many words | :27:45. | :27:47.
when you're speaking to him because it just gets | :27:48. | :27:50.
too overwhelming for him. He's got different noises | :27:51. | :27:53.
for different things, so he's got a happy noise, | :27:54. | :27:56.
a sad noise. 18 months ago, Sam's behaviour | :27:57. | :27:59.
became extremely distressing. sometimes to the extent | :28:00. | :28:05.
of needing hospital care. It was really severe injuries | :28:06. | :28:10.
that he was giving himself. And he would bang his head | :28:11. | :28:14.
on the floor, the walls, just wherever he saw a hard | :28:15. | :28:16.
surface, he would walk up to it and just crack his head | :28:17. | :28:24.
right off it. Sam was trying to bang his head | :28:25. | :28:27.
up to 300 times a day, A protective helmet didn't help him, | :28:28. | :28:31.
as he would pull it aside. We honestly thought that he would | :28:32. | :28:36.
kill himself in the end with it. After six months of Sam | :28:37. | :28:44.
hurting himself, his mum and dad | :28:45. | :28:47.
were at breaking point. We felt that we couldn't cope | :28:48. | :28:50.
with Sam any longer and that the safest place for him | :28:51. | :28:54.
would be residential care As parents, | :28:55. | :28:57.
you feel that you've failed. Facing the reality | :28:58. | :29:06.
of breaking their family up, They were able to secure Sam a place | :29:07. | :29:09.
at St Crispin's after-school club, Same started going to two hours | :29:10. | :29:15.
of the after-school club It provides him and other children | :29:16. | :29:20.
with additional needs in a very calm but controlled | :29:21. | :29:26.
environment, with one-to-one attention | :29:27. | :29:31.
with project workers Within a couple of weeks, | :29:32. | :29:33.
we realised Since Sam started at the club, | :29:34. | :29:38.
he's got so much more confident. He's much happier | :29:39. | :29:43.
when he's meeting new people, and he really loves | :29:44. | :29:46.
getting the attention. He also really enjoys trying out | :29:47. | :29:49.
lots of new activities It's really nice seeing how much | :29:50. | :29:51.
his confidence has grown. Sam going to after-school club, | :29:52. | :29:59.
for him, has just been a godsend. He's happier when he gets in, | :30:00. | :30:02.
he comes and mixes with us, with all the family, | :30:03. | :30:05.
whereas prior to going, he didn't. The after-school club has made | :30:06. | :30:07.
the difference between Sam living with his family | :30:08. | :30:13.
and being in residential care. You know, Sam has got | :30:14. | :30:16.
huge challenges in his life, and as parents, our priority | :30:17. | :30:20.
has always been that he is happy. And to see him happy and fulfilled | :30:21. | :30:23.
there, you just can't describe it. It's just a lovely feeling | :30:24. | :30:27.
that he's happy again. You can change someone's live by | :30:28. | :30:44.
picking up the phone. You changed our lives by doing that. Can we ask | :30:45. | :30:49.
you to do the same for disadvantaged children all over the UK. They | :30:50. | :30:52.
cannot thank you in person, but on their behalf, we will. Thank you | :30:53. | :30:58.
very much. Please call 03457332233. It has been amazing to be part of | :30:59. | :31:03.
Children In Need and hang out in the most famous pub in Britain - the | :31:04. | :31:08.
Queen Vic. There is much more to come. There is a brand new Catherine | :31:09. | :31:14.
Tate sketch where she brings back her Nan sketch. Do you remember | :31:15. | :31:25.
here? Keep it PG! What a friking liberty! | :31:26. | :31:28.
Whatever you can afford, just do it - you will be a hero in our eyes. | :31:29. | :31:33.
Enjoy the rest of the night. See you soon. Next up it is Tinie Tempah | :31:34. | :31:39.
with Children Of The Sun. From us, it is goodbye. Goodbye! | :31:40. | :32:01.
# Like Michael said, it doesn't matter if you're black or white | :32:02. | :32:04.
# We got the colours of the sun to descend above us | :32:05. | :32:06.
# All we have is each other in case you happen to wonder | :32:07. | :32:08.
# Lay down your head you're not alone | :32:09. | :32:13.
# Lay down your head, you're not alone | :32:14. | :32:25.
# Lay down your head, you're not alone | :32:26. | :33:18.
# Lay down your head you're not alone | :33:19. | :33:30.
# From yellow bricks and them rime stones, I ring bells | :33:31. | :34:02.
# Look at all the rappers we outsold so keep your mouth closed | :34:03. | :34:06.
# Maybe all these insecurities done make you feel naked | :34:07. | :34:11.
# Just a liberty of PED, epitome of what's famous | :34:12. | :34:18.
# Grease up in my parish, keep on putting me in those papers | :34:19. | :34:21.
# Swear I'd never sell my soul, my pride and dignity is too major | :34:22. | :34:25.
# We rarely even get those second chances, after a lifetime of regret | :34:26. | :34:28.
# Lay down your head you're not alone | :34:29. | :34:34.
# Lay down your head, you're not alone | :34:35. | :34:47.
Give it up for Tinie Tempah! Lovely! | :34:48. | :35:25.
Look at your wonderful jacket. Later on you'll be judging a lip-sink | :35:26. | :35:37.
dual! I am judging Greg James and Russell, I know they are crazy, so I | :35:38. | :35:42.
am looking forward it to. Basically it is when you kind of, a lot of | :35:43. | :35:47.
very, very big celebrities do it. Not me! Never! Not there yet. When | :35:48. | :35:53.
you are singing your song, basically you mime along to it, but really, | :35:54. | :35:57.
really convincingly well. They have to do that to their best possible | :35:58. | :36:01.
ability. I will be the judge. I am looking forward to that. Are you | :36:02. | :36:06.
guys? Are you having a good time tonight? | :36:07. | :36:11.
It has been incredible. Everything has been such fun. I am so happy to | :36:12. | :36:16.
be here. It is so important for you to be part of it tonight? | :36:17. | :36:23.
Absolutely. If you have not seen it before, then you are in for a treat, | :36:24. | :36:31.
especially when it is BBC Three's presenters. I saw that! You need to | :36:32. | :36:36.
hot-foot it over to BBC One. Be gone with you. See you in a bit. You will | :36:37. | :36:41.
join the wonderful Zoe | :36:42. | :36:44. |
