a bit. OK, waiting time at the bar is nearly over. Here are five boys

who have just finished a worldwide tour and recorded... There's a fan -

their brand new album. They are propping up the bar now in the Queen

Vic. It is only flipping One Direction!

Thanks. Lads, I can not believe we're standing in the Queen Vic. It

is a charity we hold close to our hearts. We were first here in 2011

performing What makes You Beautiful. Last year we performed on the show.

With our performance earlier that makes a hat trick.

You're going to meet Sam, he's just brilliant.

And you're going to meet Ember. She's pretty fabulous too.

It's been really, really hard to make friends.

I'm just a bit nervous about introducing myself to new people.

People think because he speaks well, that there's absolutely no problem.

I've got a condition called auditory neuropathy,

which means you start off profoundly deaf

and then you regain a little bit of your hearing.

Sam was less confident in social situations, so at parties,

for example, Isabel and Edward would go straight in there

and Sam said to me, "I'm not going."

so I just felt really like I wanted to help him but I couldn't.

He was scared and he didn't know where we were.

I can't hear my parents talking downstairs or the TV being on.

I think Sam's record was 27 times I put him back to bed,

Certainly when he started school, he'd have an annual report,

and in that, it was always mentioned that he was so tired.

I can only imagine how difficult it is for him.

Two years ago, Sam met someone very special.

Literally, that first week, I was stunned about the difference.

She is one of over 750 highly trained hearing dogs in the UK.

Thanks to you, dogs like Ember can support deaf children

in their daily lives and alert them to potential dangers.

She does give him that sense of security and safety.

He has always been very scared of fire,

because he can't hear smoke alarms. So that's what Ember does.

SMOKE ALARM BEEPS She nudges his leg

and she drops to the floor, and she'll wait till he responds.

I think Sam's confidence has improved hugely

He's incredibly proud of her, and in the past, where he'd hang back,

if people ask him questions about Ember, he'll say, "That's my dog."

But the biggest difference we saw was sleep.

From that first week, Sam slept through.

I couldn't believe that having a dog sleeping in your bedroom

She helps him have a happy childhood,

and that's what every parent wants for their child.

It's kind of scary what life would be like without Ember

and without hearing dogs, because she changed my life a lot.

She does her job really, really, really well.

100%, she's part of the family now. She's brill.

She's my best friend, because I know she's always there for me.

Thanks to you, Sam has a new best friend

that has made him feel happy and safe.

better than ever ever before! Thank you Gary Barlow - the stars were out

Thanks to Chris and Fern for hosting, thanks to Gary Barlow for

putting on an amazing show and thank you to all the acts. This has been a

vintage year for Children In Need. It is you at home who will keep it

going. We thank you very much. We have others to thank too! Staff at B

and Q have encouraged local kids to turn DIY into PIY. That is Pudsey it

yourself. Like this lot who make their own Pudsey coat pegs. They

have turned paint into Pudsey pounds. Stores got messy with their

helping hands walls. Painted faces are fine here - at the round table's

fund-raising day in Cardiff, where a carting competition helped to

collect cart-loads of cash! And a massive thanks to the staff at

Debenhams, where it was all about about the confidence, as kids

strutted their stuff Pudsey-style, with a catwalk show.

You go, guys! Every penny is spent here in the UK.

Next, to Scot lands to hear about a project which has changed the lives

of a family there. a young Scottish boy called Sam

and his family. Sam has severe autism. Last year,

his family reached breaking point. But they then found a project

funded by your donations, and what a difference it's made

to all of them. Sam's very lovable. When he smiles,

it lights the room up. He's on the lower half

of the autistic spectrum, You have to speak in very short

sentences when you speak to him, so that he just grasps

the main points of the sentence. You can't use too many words

when you're speaking to him because it just gets

too overwhelming for him. He's got different noises

for different things, so he's got a happy noise,

a sad noise. 18 months ago, Sam's behaviour

became extremely distressing. sometimes to the extent

of needing hospital care. It was really severe injuries

that he was giving himself. And he would bang his head

on the floor, the walls, just wherever he saw a hard

surface, he would walk up to it and just crack his head

right off it. Sam was trying to bang his head

up to 300 times a day, A protective helmet didn't help him,

as he would pull it aside. We honestly thought that he would

kill himself in the end with it. After six months of Sam

hurting himself, his mum and dad

were at breaking point. We felt that we couldn't cope

with Sam any longer and that the safest place for him

would be residential care As parents,

you feel that you've failed. Facing the reality

of breaking their family up, They were able to secure Sam a place

at St Crispin's after-school club, Same started going to two hours

of the after-school club It provides him and other children

with additional needs in a very calm but controlled

environment, with one-to-one attention

with project workers Within a couple of weeks,

we realised Since Sam started at the club,

he's got so much more confident. He's much happier

when he's meeting new people, and he really loves

getting the attention. He also really enjoys trying out

lots of new activities It's really nice seeing how much

his confidence has grown. Sam going to after-school club,

for him, has just been a godsend. He's happier when he gets in,

he comes and mixes with us, with all the family,

whereas prior to going, he didn't. The after-school club has made

the difference between Sam living with his family

and being in residential care. You know, Sam has got

huge challenges in his life, and as parents, our priority

has always been that he is happy. And to see him happy and fulfilled

there, you just can't describe it. It's just a lovely feeling

that he's happy again. You can change someone's live by

picking up the phone. You changed our lives by doing that. Can we ask

you to do the same for disadvantaged children all over the UK. They

cannot thank you in person, but on their behalf, we will. Thank you
