-he was called up to serve in WW1.

-He spoke a lot to the family

-about one of his friends.

-He wasn't a good soldier,

-a natural soldier.

-He was unfocused, as if he were

-composing an ode in his head.

-One night, Simon Jones

-and another friend, Ned Bach...

-..were writing letters

-to their families.

-But the poet

-wasn't writing a letter.

-He was composing a poem

-about his two friends.

-It was about his desire

-to see Simon Jones and Ned Bach...

-..returning home safely

-after the war.

-"One moonlit evening

-above the rough meadows

-"Two lads from Llanuwchllyn

-were writing their best

-"They were both sending

-letters to their loved ones

-"The name of one was Simon,

-the other was Ned Bach."

-It's a striking poem.

-Both Simon Jones and Ned Bach

-fortunately survived the war...

-..unlike the poet

-who wrote the poem.

-It's a sad story.

-My great-grandfather, Simon Jones,

-saw his friend, the poet, die.

-He remembered

-that it was early morning...

-..on the first day

-of the battle at Passchendaele.

-The poet was killed

-by a shell to the abdomen.

-The poet in question was Hedd Wyn.

-There was another even better verse.

-We were blessed to return home.
