So, boys, are we ready for business? | 0:00:24 | 0:00:26
THEY LAUGH | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
..but won't be doing it on our own. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
You, the great British public, will be helping us. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
Don't drop the log! | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36

Anneka will go out and about to get you to join our gang. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
-What's your name? -David. -David, you're on our team. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
-How many do you need, I think is the question. -A dozen? | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
And Phil is going to be giving it his all... | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
Still got it. Used to play for England, you know? | 0:00:59 | 0:01:01
..as well as learning what it takes to become a gardener... | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
Cor blimey, this is hard work! | 0:01:04 | 0:01:06
..but is he tough enough? | 0:01:06 | 0:01:08
-It needs a man on the job! -It does. | 0:01:08 | 0:01:10
Is there a man anywhere? | 0:01:10 | 0:01:12
This week we've had a call for help from here in the city of Sunderland. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:17
There's a little girl here, ten-year-old Hannah, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
who, along with many other children, is missing out on the joys | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
and the carefree fun of being a child. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:24
Now, Hannah's not your typical little girl. | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
She spends a lot of her time looking after her mum, Lynne, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
who suffers from arthritis. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
As well as her sister, Rachel, who is autistic. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
And this means Hannah doesn't get to be a proper kid much | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
and muck about with her mates, and that's sad. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
I do think that my family set up is different to most kids | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
but I would never change it. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
Just because I've got a different family | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
doesn't mean I would change it for anything. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
I love them too much to do that. | 0:01:53 | 0:01:56
Hannah gets support from Sunderland Young Carers | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
who help lots of kids and young people | 0:02:01 | 0:02:03
who are sacrificing their childhood to look after their loved ones. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:08
But one thing that could help these young carers make the most | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
out of their precious time at the centre is access to an outdoor space. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
Not just bland parkland but a garden with real kids appeal. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:20
What the garden will do for me? Everything. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
It will give us, me a place to go to relax... | 0:02:23 | 0:02:28
to do whatever I want... | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
to feel like a kid again and not a grown-up! | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
'And that's where we come in...' | 0:02:35 | 0:02:37
-Right there? -Perfect! -Perfect! | 0:02:37 | 0:02:39
..we've got just ten days to transform an unused area | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
into a wonderland for youngsters. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
Haven't got time to stop. We're up against it. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
There's no chance that we're going to finish this project. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
Look at that! Look at that! You got one little bit like that! | 0:02:50 | 0:02:53
But things don't always go to plan. | 0:02:53 | 0:02:55
If those volunteers don't turn up soon we are going to be in trouble. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:58
We need a helping hand to bring some childhood fun | 0:02:58 | 0:03:01
back into these kids' lives. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
Well, we can't make this happen for Hannah and the other young carers | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
without LOADS of volunteers and that's where you come in. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
Last week we asked for your help here in Sunderland. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:13
We asked you to come and join The Flowerpot Gang, get your hands dirty | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
and you can see how we all got on later in the programme. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
Hello there, and welcome to Sunderland Carers' Centre | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
on a very rainy day. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
Now, this garden might look OK | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
but if you're a young kid who is desperate to find somewhere to play | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
or hang out it's next to useless. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
But together, with friends and family from this centre... | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
-ALL: -Yay! | 0:03:45 | 0:03:47
We're going to create a garden here for the people who need it most. | 0:03:47 | 0:03:51
That's this very special group of youngsters behind me - | 0:03:51 | 0:03:54
they are Sunderland's young carers. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:56
Now, it's going to be tough but with help from this lot. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:59
We're going to transform this bland space into a truly unique, | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
beautiful and exciting haven. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:06
Were these kids get the chance to be kids again. | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
Being a young carer is really tough. | 0:04:10 | 0:04:13
On the surface Hannah looks like any other ten-year-old | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
but the constant emotional strain of worrying about her mum and her sister | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
casts a shadow over her life. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:21
'Emotionally it is difficult.' | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
When I were wee I tended to worry in case, like, something, | 0:04:26 | 0:04:30
in case, like, one of them falls down their own feet, | 0:04:30 | 0:04:33
or down the stairs, or something, and gets hurt. I'm not there. | 0:04:33 | 0:04:37
So, I do tend to worry. Even when I shouldn't be. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:41
Hannah's, kind of, like, a bit like a little glue stick. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:45
She, kind of, puts little sticky plasters on everywhere. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:49
She's a naturally caring child who cares for her sister, | 0:04:49 | 0:04:54
who cares for her mum. | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
Sometimes little Hannah...doesn't get a break from any of that. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:02
I have to do my responsibilities. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:06
Like...with me sister I've got loads. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
With me mam, I've got loads. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
It feels like you're just getting loads on you. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
Sue, who works at the centre, | 0:05:18 | 0:05:20
knows what these youngsters are going through. | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
Hannah is typical of a young carer. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
In the sense of she picks up on all the worry that mum or dad would have | 0:05:26 | 0:05:30
and then she worries about that. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
She's very protective of her sibling because she knows she's different. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:37
There is a massive impact on Hannah. | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
The Centre supports young carers from the age of four to 25. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:45
Becky's been a carer almost all her life and looks after her mum, | 0:05:45 | 0:05:50
Lynne, who has MS and her sister, Nicola, who has cerebral palsy. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:54
Sit. | 0:05:59 | 0:06:00 | |
'I started being a young carer when I was about two | 0:06:01 | 0:06:03
'and that was, basically, just helping my mum' | 0:06:03 | 0:06:06
and my dad around the house with Nicola. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:08
Like, fetching nappies and just being a younger sister, really. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
And, obviously, now I realise why Nicola needed extra help. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:15
When I was about 11, 12 my mum got diagnosed with multiple sclerosis | 0:06:15 | 0:06:20
and then ever since then I've cared for both of them. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:24
And as the years have gone on I've took on more and more responsibility | 0:06:24 | 0:06:28
so when me mam couldn't no longer, like, bath Nicola | 0:06:28 | 0:06:31
and help her get ready, then I, kind of, took over that role. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:35
And then, when I was 18, I became the sole carer for both of them. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
LYNNE WHIMPERS | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
'There has been tough times. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:43
'Like, really hard times where I just think,' | 0:06:43 | 0:06:45
"Oh, I don't want to do this any more," | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
but...I do it because I love them. | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
Because they're my mam and my sister, and...it's... | 0:06:50 | 0:06:54
People, it's so easy just to walk away but, actually, it's not. | 0:06:54 | 0:06:58
All those years of caring means Becky really understands | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
how tough things can get for Hannah. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:05
Young carers might feel quite alone because their friends are at school | 0:07:05 | 0:07:09
and they're having a good time, and they just want to go out. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:12
Going to young carers, we all understand each other | 0:07:12 | 0:07:14
because we've all got the same situation at home. | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
These youngsters not only deserve | 0:07:17 | 0:07:19
but really need a break from all this hard work. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:22
That's why we're going to turn this bland space into not one | 0:07:22 | 0:07:26
but two lovely life-changing gardens. | 0:07:26 | 0:07:29
A fun filled play area for the young kids, like Hannah, | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
and an outdoor chill out space for Becky and the teenagers. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
This ain't just a garden, | 0:07:39 | 0:07:41
it's a little escape from the tough every day. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44
I do think the garden will get rid of everything - | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
all the stress, or the anger. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:49
Everything, and you can just be yourself. | 0:07:49 | 0:07:52
Two gardens in one space, that's a tricky one | 0:07:54 | 0:07:59
but luckily Joe Swift, our green-fingered guru, | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
has got a cunning plan. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:03
I spent a load of my childhood | 0:08:03 | 0:08:06
running around outdoors with my mates without a care in the world. | 0:08:06 | 0:08:10
Now, this design has got to deliver. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
It's for Hannah, and the other young carers, | 0:08:13 | 0:08:15
to get a sense of childhood fun back into their lives. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
Something they might have lost | 0:08:18 | 0:08:19
through caring for some of their family. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
# Today I don't feel like doing anything... # | 0:08:23 | 0:08:28
Swifty likes to crack the whip | 0:08:28 | 0:08:31
so I find it best to put your feet up for a while when you can. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:34
-Oh, this is it, isn't it, Phil? -Beautiful weather, isn't it? | 0:08:35 | 0:08:38
-What are you to doing?! -Oh, he is! -What is this? -Here he is! | 0:08:38 | 0:08:41
We didn't know where you were, Joe. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
-Lying around! -How are you going? -I'm doing all right. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:45
-I've just been tweaking the plan. -Let's have a look! -Yeah? | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
-You've got to get up! -All right, come on. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:50
-You all right? -Yeah. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:51
After you, my dear. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:53
-Right, this is the plan. -What are we got? -There you go. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
We've got, well, at the moment it's one big open green space. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
-OK. -What's all this? This looks good fun. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:02
Right, OK, this is for the grown-up kids. | 0:09:02 | 0:09:04
You know, the teenagers and above. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
So, there's, like, a barbecue area over here. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
A fire pit, erm, there's a real den feel. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:12
Exactly what I would have wanted if I was that age. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:16
Joe's plan is to split the space in two. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
For the kids we're going to create a magical wood | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
with a huge oak climbing frame | 0:09:22 | 0:09:23
and a sandpit in the shape of a heart - | 0:09:23 | 0:09:25
a theme for all our gardens. | 0:09:25 | 0:09:28
-The sandpit's going in roughly around here. -Oh, it's a sandpit! | 0:09:28 | 0:09:30
Sandpit but with big boulders on the outside. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
Beyond the sandpit we've got massive mushroom seats | 0:09:32 | 0:09:36
and bonkers Perspex flowers. | 0:09:36 | 0:09:38
-Over here, more Willy Wonka-esque. Again, for the little ones. -OK. | 0:09:38 | 0:09:42
A sort of Willy Wonka world. | 0:09:42 | 0:09:44
You know, a little bit surreal and everything oversize | 0:09:44 | 0:09:47
-and all a little bit mad. -OK. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
And my favourite bit of this Hobbity garden? | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
A mini hill with two tunnels to clamber around. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:56
For the teenagers, Joe's plan is to build an outdoor den. | 0:09:56 | 0:09:59
Arches lead into a chill out zone around a fire pit. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:03
There's even a barbecue. It's all very Ibiza. | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
There's a rope swing to, literally, hang out on | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
and hammocks for that summer vibe. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
-We've got to just imagine that we are all kids again. -Yes! -You know. | 0:10:11 | 0:10:15
-Easy! So easy to do! -We could do that! | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
-Anneka, can you do that? -I could do that. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:21
-We're all kids again! -I'm there! You're on fire! | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
Anyway, that's the plan. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:25
The Hobbit meets Alice in Sunderland play area for the kids | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
and a hip hangout for the teens. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
So, Hannah, this is the very exciting part, now, | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34
cos we are going to create a magical garden | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
for you and your friends to play in | 0:10:37 | 0:10:39
-but you are not allowed to see it until it's finished. -Oh! | 0:10:39 | 0:10:41
-I know, no peeking at all! -Grr! | 0:10:41 | 0:10:44
How are you going to manage, for ten days, not to peek? | 0:10:44 | 0:10:47
-Get my sister to lock me in her room. -Would she do that? | 0:10:47 | 0:10:50
I shall ask your sister to lock you, you can come out occasionally | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
cos I want you to come out and occasionally help me | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
-with some projects. -OK. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:57
So, I'm going to take you away, now. Have a last look. | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
Bland, boring old bit of grass. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:02
When you come back, hopefully, a big surprise! Off we go. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:06
It's exciting, isn't it? | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
I've also slapped a no peeking order on care worker Sue. | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
We want it to be a surprise for her too. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:16
Right, day one. The team arrive ready for action. | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
But, no, there's a hitch. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
Swifty spots a tree that will have to come down before we start the real work. | 0:11:31 | 0:11:36
-Beautiful tree. Shame it has to go. -Yeah. There is a bit of growth up the top, though, | 0:11:36 | 0:11:39
but that's gone, has it? | 0:11:39 | 0:11:41
Well, most of it's dead. It's got to come out, honestly. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:44
'It may look OK, but in a bit of a wind, | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
'this brittle dead wood could snap off and really hurt someone. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:50
'It needs chopping down but will set us back at least half a day.' | 0:11:50 | 0:11:55
-Now's the time to do it before we start the construction. -OK. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
'Much as I fancy wielding a chainsaw myself, this is a job for the pros.' | 0:11:58 | 0:12:03
'Felling a 50-foot tree is not only a major operation, | 0:12:10 | 0:12:13
'it's a dangerous one too.' | 0:12:13 | 0:12:14
-Quite a big lump came down. Are we in the right place? -We're all right. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:20
TIMBER! | 0:12:20 | 0:12:22
-Yeah, lovely bit of wood. -Yeah, lovely. | 0:12:25 | 0:12:27
It hasn't half made a mess though. There's loads of it. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:29
-That's what we've got to do. Clear it all up. -Let's do it. -Yeah. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
-Let's go. Let's crack on. -Tuffers. -Yeah. | 0:12:32 | 0:12:35
-Haven't you forgotten something? -Gloves. Where's my gloves? | 0:12:35 | 0:12:39
'Tuffers is worried about hurting his spin bowler's hands.' | 0:12:39 | 0:12:42
'Hang on, didn't he retire nearly ten years ago?' | 0:12:45 | 0:12:47
-The gloves. -The paws will now be protected. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:51
Oh, fantastic. I feel I could do anything with these gloves on. | 0:12:51 | 0:12:55
Come on, let's get on with it. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:57
-Look at that. You've got one little bit. -I'm coming back for some more. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:03
We're going to get the chipper. | 0:13:03 | 0:13:04
-Chuck them here. -Chuck them there? -And we'll get the chipper in. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:08
I can't rely on Tweedle-dum and Tweedle-dumber | 0:13:08 | 0:13:10
to do all the grafting. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:12
We need help if we're going to get this garden done. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:14
Time to hit the streets of Sunderland. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:18
Joan's project is really quite ambitious. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:27
There's a lot of, sort of, complicated construction to do, | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
so we're heading out to see if we can find some people to come | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
and help us over the next few days but we specifically need joiners | 0:13:34 | 0:13:38
and apparently there's a college where there's a construction course, | 0:13:38 | 0:13:42
so we thought we'd start there. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:44
Oh, look! Oh, bliss! Hello. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:52
'Wow, I've hit the jackpot here.' | 0:13:52 | 0:13:55
-Who are you? -I'm Martin. -Hello, guys. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:57
Look at this. We need your men. | 0:13:57 | 0:14:00
What we need your team to come and help us with | 0:14:02 | 0:14:04
is actually laying decking. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:06
-Right. -Will they be able to do that? -Yes, yes. The lads are very... | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
It could be like their weekend homework. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:12
Yes, they'd really enjoy that. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:13
So how many altogether do you think you could manage? | 0:14:13 | 0:14:15
-How many do you need is the question. -A dozen? -Yeah, yeah. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:18
That was a bumper harvest. Absolutely fantastic. | 0:14:19 | 0:14:23
We've got joiners coming, painters, decorators. Hello, there. | 0:14:23 | 0:14:27
Couldn't be better. I'm really pleased. | 0:14:27 | 0:14:29
Back in the garden, it's pretty clear these wood chippings aren't going to shift themselves. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:34
Luckily, reinforcements arrive | 0:14:34 | 0:14:36
in the shape of Becky's gang of young carers. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
Happy days. Here we go. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:41
Let's get this garden started, team. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:45
Well done, mate. | 0:14:50 | 0:14:52
'Since the age of four, young carer, Jordan, | 0:14:52 | 0:14:54
'has helped look after his disabled brother, Craig.' | 0:14:54 | 0:14:56
What do you think about the garden then, mate? | 0:14:56 | 0:14:59
-I can't wait for it to be finished, see how good it'll be. -Yeah? | 0:14:59 | 0:15:03
-Give us a place to go now and then. -Yeah? | 0:15:03 | 0:15:05
What do you think's going to be in it? What would you like in it? | 0:15:05 | 0:15:10
-Somewhere we could go and relax. Barbecue perhaps? -Yeah, yeah. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:15
Somewhere to just chill. | 0:15:15 | 0:15:17
Somewhere to meet up that's nice, that's not just a basic park. | 0:15:17 | 0:15:20
-Somewhere that's got a bit more colour and life to it. -Great. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:23
-Well, hopefully, that's what's going to happen. -Hope so. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:26
-Oh, Becky! -Hi. -What time do you call this? | 0:15:32 | 0:15:36
'Becky rocks up, gang leader of the teen carers | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
'and a role-model for the youngsters.' | 0:15:39 | 0:15:42
-So, Becky. -Yeah. -Come on, we need to put these logs over there. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:45
What's life like as a young carer? | 0:15:45 | 0:15:48
It can be hard but I just get on with it really. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:52
-I've done it for so long now. I just kind of get on with it. -Yeah. | 0:15:52 | 0:15:58
'I'm amazed how these young carers cope. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:02
'Becky really believes in this project | 0:16:02 | 0:16:03
'and wants to help in any way she can.' | 0:16:03 | 0:16:06
I think it will be really important, not just to our group, but all | 0:16:06 | 0:16:10
the young carers as well because we deserve something like this. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:14
-It's nice to have our own space that we can call ours. -Yeah. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:18
Well, we'd better get these logs shifted. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:19
-We're not getting any work done. -We ain't getting any work done. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:24
This is a big job, so to help the volunteers and us out, | 0:16:24 | 0:16:27
we've roped in some pros. | 0:16:27 | 0:16:29
Driving the digger is Colin. Then there's Joe's right-hand man, Ned. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:34
And our resident pessimist, project manager, Rich. | 0:16:34 | 0:16:38
Just cos you can draw it don't mean it can always be built. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:41
Such a little ray of sunshine, | 0:16:41 | 0:16:42
but there's a real problem with the final bits of the cherry tree. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:46
-So we need to roll them down there? -Down there. -Shall we have a race? | 0:16:46 | 0:16:49
-I like a challenge. -Lovely. -Bring it on. | 0:16:49 | 0:16:52
OK, this is my one. It's nice and round. | 0:16:52 | 0:16:55
To get all the logs moved in one go, Phil calls in the teens. | 0:16:55 | 0:16:58
Joe's going for gold. | 0:16:58 | 0:17:00
I believe, I believe. | 0:17:00 | 0:17:02
On your marks. | 0:17:02 | 0:17:04
Get set. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:05
Go! | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08 | |
Come on! What you doing over here? | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
Tuffers, no, that's cheating. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:11
That is cheating. | 0:17:11 | 0:17:13
Are you there? I think you might have won it over there. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:18
The winner is... | 0:17:18 | 0:17:19
I think it's the man here. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:24
The winner! | 0:17:24 | 0:17:26
Tuffers, what's all that about? That's blatant cheating. | 0:17:26 | 0:17:28
Picking up the log and running with it. | 0:17:28 | 0:17:30
-There's no Olympic sport... -There's nothing in the rules. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:33
There's no Olympic sport called log running. It's called log rolling. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:36
There's nothing in the rules to say you can't pick up your log | 0:17:36 | 0:17:39
and run with it. | 0:17:39 | 0:17:40
No, that's not true. You haven't read the rules properly, see. | 0:17:40 | 0:17:43
Typical from you. Anyway, you still came last. | 0:17:43 | 0:17:45
With the remnants of the cherry tree at last gone, | 0:17:45 | 0:17:48
we can get cracking on the hobbit hill and its tunnels. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
Now, like Rich said, it may look easy on paper, | 0:17:51 | 0:17:54
but building it is a whole other thing. | 0:17:54 | 0:17:57
Two massive concrete tubes covered with tonnes of earth, | 0:17:57 | 0:18:00
it's really tricky. | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
We have to create a route through so the water can drain through. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:05
I think we should sink them. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:07
-If you sink them, they'll just fill with water. -No, they won't. | 0:18:07 | 0:18:10
-Yes, they will. -Listen to the expert. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:12
It's going to be pitchforks at dawn over these tunnels. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:16
Right, there you go. | 0:18:16 | 0:18:17
Yeah, lovely. It's good. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
Imagine you're a kid scrambling through and you go back | 0:18:19 | 0:18:23
and scramble through and then you go up over the top of them. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:28
-I'm just imagining where we could lose a designer. -Yeah. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:32
I think we're a bit heavy on landscapers on this site. | 0:18:32 | 0:18:35
The felling of the cherry tree put us behind and we work into the evening | 0:18:37 | 0:18:41
shifting tonnes of earth trying to catch up on the groundwork, but | 0:18:41 | 0:18:44
it's clear at the end of our first day that time may not be on our side. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
It's early morning on day two and Anneka's on the hunt. | 0:18:53 | 0:18:56
Now, more than ever, we need more volunteers. | 0:18:56 | 0:19:00
What we really need is some very strong guys | 0:19:00 | 0:19:02
because we're going to have a lot of lifting and digging | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
and really some quite heavy, sweaty toil jobs. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:10
But I think the sea's over there. Let's have a look on the beach. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:13
Ooh! | 0:19:18 | 0:19:20 | |
Lifeguards. | 0:19:20 | 0:19:21
But there's no-one here. | 0:19:21 | 0:19:24
We've found some lifeguards. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:27
We've been hilariously going up and down the beach. Who are you? | 0:19:27 | 0:19:31
-I'm Andy. -And I'm Sam. -Oh, Andy and Sam, we need you so much. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:35
We've been trawling Sunderland | 0:19:35 | 0:19:37
and we haven't seen any fit young people | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
and then we were driving along the beach and we saw you | 0:19:40 | 0:19:42
and it was just like a mirage in the distance. | 0:19:42 | 0:19:45
Would you be able to help? | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
-Yeah. -Definitely happy to help. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:48
It's a really lovely project and it will be hard work | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
but probably nothing as strenuous as | 0:19:51 | 0:19:54
being out in that sea in all temperatures. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
Very nice to talk to you. Bye. | 0:19:57 | 0:19:59
'Well, let's hope those guys are going to throw us a life-line | 0:19:59 | 0:20:02
'because back in the garden the jobs are already stacking up.' | 0:20:02 | 0:20:06
There's a delivery of timber for the walkway, a major feature of Joe's design for the teenagers' den area | 0:20:06 | 0:20:11
and, thanks to Anneka, we've got just the team to build them. | 0:20:11 | 0:20:15
Look at you. You've all got your high-vis on, your hard hats on, | 0:20:15 | 0:20:18
your safety boots, all the tools. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:20
The construction students from the local college are all tooled up | 0:20:20 | 0:20:24
and ready for action. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:25
Are any of you chippies? | 0:20:25 | 0:20:26
No, chippies are where you get your chips from. We're all joiners. | 0:20:26 | 0:20:30
Well, whatever they're called, they are certainly joining in. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:33
Anneka has struck gold with this lot. | 0:20:37 | 0:20:40
The lads were doing decking, which is great. | 0:20:40 | 0:20:42
It kind of ties in with what the community's wanting here, | 0:20:42 | 0:20:45
so it's ideal really. | 0:20:45 | 0:20:47
It's better than college. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:48
Ah, another platoon of volunteers. Are you the lifeguard guys? | 0:20:50 | 0:20:54
-Yeah, we are, yeah. -Nice to meet you. Fantastic. | 0:20:54 | 0:20:57
And Anneka's lifeguards are joined by helpers from the care centre. | 0:20:57 | 0:21:01
I will leave you in Ned's capable hands, OK? | 0:21:01 | 0:21:04
He's going to show you how to strip. | 0:21:04 | 0:21:07
A couple of you are splitting up into sections | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
just like that. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
Our Baywatch hunks and babes are stripping turf for a new flowerbed. | 0:21:13 | 0:21:17
I'm absolutely terrible at turf stripping, absolutely terrible. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:21
I think I dug a hole instead of just stripping it. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:26
We've got the joiners over there, or chippies as I know them, | 0:21:26 | 0:21:29
and then the volunteers here stripping all this turf. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:31
It's going really well today. Serious progress. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:34
Our teen carers get stuck into the turf too | 0:21:34 | 0:21:37
taking on the heart-shaped sandpit. | 0:21:37 | 0:21:39
Digging it out is one thing | 0:21:39 | 0:21:43
but filling it with eight tonnes of sand is going to be no small task. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
To pull this feat off it's one of the many jobs we're leaving till | 0:21:46 | 0:21:49
the big open day when we really hope the public will turn out in force | 0:21:49 | 0:21:53
to join us for one final push. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:54
Green fingers crossed. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:56
Right now, our local volunteers are really pulling their weight. | 0:21:57 | 0:22:02
The construction students must have been paying attention in class | 0:22:02 | 0:22:05
because before we know it, the walkways are ready. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:08
They also double up as seats for pow-wows around the campfire. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:11
Time to test them out. | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
In a way, you seem closer-knit and tighter | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
and seem to know each other better than a lot of groups of friends. | 0:22:17 | 0:22:20
Each one of us has got a parent or a sibling at home who we look after, | 0:22:20 | 0:22:24
so we've all got that in common. | 0:22:24 | 0:22:26
We all understand each other so these guys will know | 0:22:26 | 0:22:30
if my mam's poorly or my sister's poorly I can't come out. | 0:22:30 | 0:22:35
They understand that. You don't have to explain it. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:37
What a great bunch. They're brilliant. | 0:22:37 | 0:22:40
I can really see this garden being used for what it's designed for. | 0:22:40 | 0:22:45
It's somewhere to just chat, forget about everything, | 0:22:45 | 0:22:48
forget about your worries and enjoy being outdoors. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:52
Next on Joe's to-do list are those crazy-coloured | 0:22:52 | 0:22:55
ten-foot flowers for the kids' garden. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:59
Now, you won't pick these up from your local garden centre, oh no. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:03
This is a job for our resident artist, Miss Anneka Rice. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:07
OK, so do you see, that will be like one petal? | 0:23:07 | 0:23:10
-Can you do some of those for me? -OK. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
'A local design company has created the steel stalks | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
'and perspex petals for us to use. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
'Now Hannah and her friends are going to help me decorate them.' | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
-Do you want to have a go, Hannah? -Let's draw round it. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:26
Do you want to draw round it? Or, Kayden, you go for it. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
'We're using a special weatherproof glue | 0:23:29 | 0:23:31
'to attach the multi-coloured petals to discs of clear Perspex. | 0:23:31 | 0:23:36
'Back in the garden, Joe's in management mode.' | 0:23:37 | 0:23:40
Just sort out that bit of turf down there and it'll all be sorted. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43
-Yeah, it's all going really well, coming along nicely. -Jo! | 0:23:43 | 0:23:46
I'm ready, mate, what do you want doing? | 0:23:46 | 0:23:47
-Nice on, Tuffers. I've got one big job for you. -Yes. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:50
-You won't be needing that at all. -Right, OK, no worries. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:52
-You'll be needing this. -Right. -It's just over there. | 0:23:52 | 0:23:56
Nice one. Hold that for a minute, mate. | 0:23:56 | 0:23:59
OK. So... | 0:23:59 | 0:24:00
# Pack up your troubles Get your old grin back | 0:24:00 | 0:24:04
# Don't worry about the cavalry... # | 0:24:04 | 0:24:07
I don't know who he thinks he is. | 0:24:07 | 0:24:09
"Go and do that, Phil. Go and do this, Phil." | 0:24:09 | 0:24:11
I never get to do any of the good jobs. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:13
'I think all those years of bowling have done for my back. | 0:24:13 | 0:24:16
'Luckily, though, there's some young ones to bail me out.' | 0:24:16 | 0:24:19
OK, not the most sexiest job on site, | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
but we've got to go through this lot, | 0:24:21 | 0:24:23
picking up all the litter and a little bit of weeds as we go. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:26
Just to tidy it up a little bit. Grab yourself a bag. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:30
And get stuck in. | 0:24:31 | 0:24:33
# Pack up your troubles Get your old grin back | 0:24:33 | 0:24:36
# Don't worry about the cavalry. # | 0:24:36 | 0:24:38
What you need on a job like this, | 0:24:39 | 0:24:42
plenty of willing volunteers. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:45
'Back at the centre, one flower done, four to go. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
'As we work, Hannah tells me about life at home.' | 0:24:51 | 0:24:54
So what do you do when you're feeling sad at home? | 0:24:54 | 0:24:57
I tend to run upstairs, sit... | 0:24:57 | 0:25:00
..and just try and forget the whole situation. | 0:25:01 | 0:25:05
And then I tend to just try and figure out where it went wrong. | 0:25:05 | 0:25:09
-Does she understand, do you think, that you find it tough? -Hm-mm. -Yeah? | 0:25:09 | 0:25:14
Yeah. | 0:25:14 | 0:25:15 | |
Is that quite nice about this centre? | 0:25:15 | 0:25:17
That you can come and be with friends who are going through | 0:25:17 | 0:25:20
the same thing, is that the best thing about it? | 0:25:20 | 0:25:22
Yeah, it has to be. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:24
You're all amazing. You know that, aren't you? | 0:25:24 | 0:25:27
-Cos you're holding everything together and you're ten. -I'm ten. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:30
-And you're...? -Eight. -Eight. You're eight? | 0:25:30 | 0:25:33
-And how old are you? -Nine. -You're nine. | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
How old do you feel you're being? About 28 or something, probably. | 0:25:36 | 0:25:40
-Hm-mm. -25. -Do you feel you're 25? And you're eight. -I feel like I'm 29. | 0:25:40 | 0:25:46
-29, aw. -Hm-mm. | 0:25:46 | 0:25:48
To me, it's like, I've got a big weight on us. | 0:25:48 | 0:25:51
The weight keeps getting pushed down every time I do something. | 0:25:51 | 0:25:55
But when I'm here, it's as if the weight's pushed up. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:59
Well, we want you to try and have as much childhood as you can | 0:25:59 | 0:26:04
when you're in this safe place here | 0:26:04 | 0:26:06
and when you're in our lovely garden that we're making for you. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:10
'These flowers are going to be really colourful and a bit magical.' | 0:26:11 | 0:26:14
Lift it up and then we'll get an idea of what it's going to look like. | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
-Ah! -The flower's upside down. -Ah! -Wow. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:23
Isn't that...? The butterfly's beautiful, the way it shows there. | 0:26:24 | 0:26:27
'It strikes me this is exactly what Hannah needs in her life, | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
'a little bit of brightness and magic.' | 0:26:32 | 0:26:34
Those kids never cease to amaze me. | 0:26:36 | 0:26:38
Talk about old heads on very young shoulders. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:40
And, Hannah, just talking about her family and her set-up, | 0:26:40 | 0:26:44
it's beyond moving. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:46
Extraordinary, really quite extraordinary. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:49
'It's the end of our second day | 0:26:49 | 0:26:51
'and we've still a long way to go on this garden. | 0:26:51 | 0:26:54
'But the carers have been brilliant. | 0:26:54 | 0:26:56
'Phil, Joe and I can see first hand just how committed they are | 0:26:56 | 0:26:59
'and what a difference this garden could make to their lives.' | 0:26:59 | 0:27:02
I mean, the thing about these kids | 0:27:04 | 0:27:06
is that they have to grow up very quickly, don't they? | 0:27:06 | 0:27:09
-Yeah. -You were saying that earlier. | 0:27:09 | 0:27:10
Yeah, well, I think it's a case of, when I was a kid, you know, | 0:27:10 | 0:27:13
I had parents who, they were the responsible ones, | 0:27:13 | 0:27:15
I could just be a kid, I didn't have to think about, you know, | 0:27:15 | 0:27:18
any responsibilities at all. Whereas... | 0:27:18 | 0:27:20
-What time's your tea. -..it's the other way round here. -Yeah. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:23
It's the other way round. These kids are worrying about their parents. | 0:27:23 | 0:27:27
-It's completely reversed. -It must be a lot of stress as well. | 0:27:27 | 0:27:30
It must be a lot of stress | 0:27:30 | 0:27:31
to have that, sort of, on your plate at that age, you know. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:34
Your job as a child was just to have freedom and innocence, wasn't it? | 0:27:34 | 0:27:39
That's what this space is all about. I'm not going to call it a garden. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:42
Where, erm, where the kids, after school, weekends, | 0:27:42 | 0:27:46
whatever, whenever they have time to get out and meet their friends, | 0:27:46 | 0:27:49
they've got somewhere to go and meet similar friends in a similar situation. | 0:27:49 | 0:27:52
-It's their space. -That's its brilliance, the fact that | 0:27:52 | 0:27:56
they're all going through this strange experience together. | 0:27:56 | 0:27:59
'We can't let Hannah and her mates down. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:01
'We've really got to get this one bang on.' | 0:28:01 | 0:28:05
'Early morning and, despite our initial set back, | 0:28:15 | 0:28:18
'Mr Swift is full of smiles.' | 0:28:18 | 0:28:20
It's great to see my design coming together on the ground. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:24
This is where this, these pipes, these tubes are going to be laid, | 0:28:24 | 0:28:28
so the kids can run through them from one side to the other. | 0:28:28 | 0:28:30
But also run over the top of them as well. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:32
It's going to be a bit of Tellytubbyland going on. | 0:28:32 | 0:28:35
We've got a few issues with that. | 0:28:35 | 0:28:36
'The tunnels are here, waiting to go in the hole, | 0:28:36 | 0:28:39
'but they're blooming heavy.' | 0:28:39 | 0:28:40
# I like to move it, move it... # | 0:28:44 | 0:28:45
'We try lifting them with a dumper, then flattening the ground | 0:28:45 | 0:28:49
'and try and roll them in. | 0:28:49 | 0:28:50
'We'd like to move it, move it, but we can't, this is serious.' | 0:28:50 | 0:28:54
Up to the top of the board. | 0:28:54 | 0:28:56
# We like to move it, move it We like to move it... # | 0:28:56 | 0:29:00
Swing the wheel that way. | 0:29:00 | 0:29:01
'No hobbit holes, no fun. | 0:29:02 | 0:29:04
'We just don't have the right tools for the job.' | 0:29:04 | 0:29:06
-How's it going, Rich? That's a nice, big hole. -Not very well. -Why not? | 0:29:08 | 0:29:12
Because we need to get these tunnels in there. | 0:29:12 | 0:29:15
We had an idea, but the idea won't work. | 0:29:15 | 0:29:18
What was the idea? | 0:29:18 | 0:29:19
We were going to use the machine to lower them in, | 0:29:19 | 0:29:21
but it won't carry the weight. | 0:29:21 | 0:29:23
-The dumper, I'm worried, is going to tip the whole lot. -No, no, no. | 0:29:23 | 0:29:26
-So what do we need? -We need... -It's the machinery. | 0:29:26 | 0:29:29
-..a telehandler. -We need more big boys' toys. Telehandler? -Yeah. | 0:29:29 | 0:29:32
'The solution is a bit of kit called a telehandler, | 0:29:32 | 0:29:35
'a fork lift with a telescopic arm.' | 0:29:35 | 0:29:37
-OK, let's get one in. When's that coming? -Don't know. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:41
That's not the right answer. | 0:29:42 | 0:29:43
Well, that's the answer you've got and the answer I've got. | 0:29:43 | 0:29:46
'Unless we can do a Gandalf and magic up a telehandler | 0:29:46 | 0:29:50
'in the next couple of hours, this build is going to grind to a halt.' | 0:29:50 | 0:29:54
We need to get them in at the weekend, | 0:29:54 | 0:29:56
so I need it today or tomorrow. | 0:29:56 | 0:29:59
'Will we ever see the light at the end of these blooming tunnels?' | 0:29:59 | 0:30:03
'While Joe tries to work out what to do, | 0:30:08 | 0:30:11
'I'm off on a research trip to the seaside.' | 0:30:11 | 0:30:13
I say, what a lovely day for cricket. | 0:30:14 | 0:30:17
And it's great to be down on the beach, | 0:30:17 | 0:30:19
cos kids in this situation, | 0:30:19 | 0:30:21
they don't get out much or have treats like this. | 0:30:21 | 0:30:24
So we're going to have a bit of fun. | 0:30:24 | 0:30:27
I don't really go out on treats that much | 0:30:27 | 0:30:30
because of my sister not liking many places. | 0:30:30 | 0:30:34
I kind of get pushed out and it's not really my choice. | 0:30:34 | 0:30:37
I don't really come down the beach that often with my family. | 0:30:37 | 0:30:40
However, the closest we'll ever get is a drive along the top. | 0:30:40 | 0:30:43
Obviously, it's difficult getting on the beach and everything. | 0:30:43 | 0:30:46
-Hello, everyone. Hello. Hello, Sue. -Hello. -Hello. Where's Hannah? | 0:30:46 | 0:30:50
Hello, Hannah. | 0:30:50 | 0:30:51
-Hi. -How are you? OK? Good stuff. | 0:30:51 | 0:30:53
-Who's up for a game of cricket? -Me! -Me! -Yes. | 0:30:53 | 0:30:56
Right, we're going to play a little game of tip-and-run. | 0:30:56 | 0:30:58
OK? So, once you've hit the ball, | 0:30:58 | 0:31:01
you've got to get the ball into me here, throw it to me. | 0:31:01 | 0:31:04
And you've got to run. | 0:31:04 | 0:31:05
OK? Cool. Here we go. | 0:31:05 | 0:31:07
'And you join us with Tuffers bowling from the sea end.' | 0:31:07 | 0:31:11
-Oh, it's a big one! -'And he's been knocked for six.' -Go on, Hannah! | 0:31:11 | 0:31:14
Keep running. | 0:31:14 | 0:31:16
Oh, good stuff. Well fielded! | 0:31:16 | 0:31:19
'That ball's travelling at least four miles an hour | 0:31:19 | 0:31:22
'and he's skied it!' | 0:31:22 | 0:31:23
Oh. Oh! Ah! | 0:31:25 | 0:31:27
Ah. | 0:31:29 | 0:31:30 | |
'Tuffers out for a duck.' | 0:31:30 | 0:31:32
Oh, good throw. | 0:31:33 | 0:31:35
Oh! | 0:31:35 | 0:31:36 | |
-Quick! -To me! | 0:31:36 | 0:31:37
-Oh, no, no! -'And he's missed a sitter. | 0:31:39 | 0:31:41
'Don't think Tuffers'll be troubling the England selectors | 0:31:41 | 0:31:43
'any time soon.' | 0:31:43 | 0:31:45
Ah! No. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:48
Worn out. | 0:31:48 | 0:31:50
Well-played, see, hit them well. | 0:31:50 | 0:31:52
'Time for a post-match tea and a chat with care worker, Sue, | 0:31:55 | 0:31:59
'who called in the Flowerpot Gang.' | 0:31:59 | 0:32:01
What do you think the garden's going to bring to the kids? | 0:32:01 | 0:32:05
It gives them that room and it's going to be so flexible, | 0:32:05 | 0:32:08
so adaptable. They can use it for socialising, | 0:32:08 | 0:32:11
they can use it when they need some one-to-one space. | 0:32:11 | 0:32:13
You know, instead of being cooped up in my office, | 0:32:13 | 0:32:16
they can come out into the garden, nice, tranquil area and talk. | 0:32:16 | 0:32:21
You know, it's just going to be adaptable | 0:32:21 | 0:32:23
for so many different things. | 0:32:23 | 0:32:25
It's going to be absolutely amazing. | 0:32:25 | 0:32:26
'Back in the garden, a break through.' | 0:32:31 | 0:32:35
Rich! Good news, the telehandler's here. | 0:32:35 | 0:32:38
-Kept that a bit of secret. -Oh, -I'M -keeping things a secret. | 0:32:38 | 0:32:42
Anyone keeps secrets from me, I'm keeping secrets from you lot. | 0:32:42 | 0:32:46
Was that English? | 0:32:46 | 0:32:47
'A very big boys' toy has arrived. And it's tunnels a-go.' | 0:32:49 | 0:32:53
This looks very encouraging. It's in one piece and it's in the hole. | 0:32:59 | 0:33:03
'The guys might be enjoying playing giant Jenga, | 0:33:03 | 0:33:07
'but tunnel-trouble has put us two days behind.' | 0:33:07 | 0:33:10
Oh, ho, ho. Nice. | 0:33:10 | 0:33:13
'Well, they're going in. | 0:33:13 | 0:33:14
'But we've still got to shift ten tons of soil | 0:33:14 | 0:33:17
'to turn them into Joe's hobbit hills.' | 0:33:17 | 0:33:19
'Time to turn our attention to the team chill-out space. | 0:33:19 | 0:33:22
'There's a stack to do to turn this corner of the Northeast | 0:33:22 | 0:33:26
'into a little bit of Ibiza. | 0:33:26 | 0:33:28
'There's a fire pit to build, bench and table to go in, | 0:33:28 | 0:33:31
'a rope swing to hang. | 0:33:31 | 0:33:32
'But first job on Joe's list, the arches. | 0:33:32 | 0:33:35
-Bit further back. -Further back? All the way back? | 0:33:35 | 0:33:37
Right up to the board, there, there. | 0:33:37 | 0:33:39
Yeah, nice. | 0:33:39 | 0:33:40
Now, the idea here is that we've got a set of arches | 0:33:40 | 0:33:43
that you walk through as if you're entering a different space. | 0:33:43 | 0:33:46
It's going to work really well. And then Anneka's going | 0:33:46 | 0:33:48
to tell us how to cut them | 0:33:48 | 0:33:49
and she's going to personalise them, get arty with it. Should look good. | 0:33:49 | 0:33:54
The arches can be made up in plywood to be whatever we want, really. | 0:33:54 | 0:33:58
Fundamentally, whatever childhood you have, whether you're in the city | 0:33:58 | 0:34:02
or in the country, | 0:34:02 | 0:34:04
you're having a tough time, you're having a great time, | 0:34:04 | 0:34:06
when you're together with your friends, that is the escape. | 0:34:06 | 0:34:09
And I think that's true for everyone, whatever you're going through. | 0:34:09 | 0:34:12
And what's particularly relevant for these kids | 0:34:12 | 0:34:15
is they have an area to be with their mates on their own, | 0:34:15 | 0:34:18
away from the cares and, you know, the worries they have at home. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:22
'I want Becky and her friends to get creative with the arches. | 0:34:22 | 0:34:26
'It's the perfect opportunity for a little self-expression.' | 0:34:26 | 0:34:29
-So, girls, this was, you want to do a rainbow... -Yeah. -..to start with. | 0:34:29 | 0:34:33
So go for it. | 0:34:33 | 0:34:36
-I'm so scared. -Do a bit there. | 0:34:36 | 0:34:38
'But for kids not used to doing things their own way, | 0:34:38 | 0:34:41
'it looks like they need a little nudge.' | 0:34:41 | 0:34:44
You can tell I'm not a graffiti artist. | 0:34:44 | 0:34:46
Can I just say, neither am I. Shall we have a go, though? | 0:34:46 | 0:34:49
# You make me feel like I'm living a teenage dream... # | 0:34:49 | 0:34:56
Right, Anneka, do you think we should do red going straight across? | 0:34:56 | 0:34:59
-It'll look a mental, huge rainbow. -A mental... | 0:34:59 | 0:35:01
I love the thought of a mental, huge rainbow. | 0:35:01 | 0:35:03
Why not? It's your garden. | 0:35:03 | 0:35:06
'I'm pleased to see my budding Banksys coming out of their shell. | 0:35:07 | 0:35:10
'With so much responsibility, | 0:35:10 | 0:35:12
'these kids must have very little time to themselves.' | 0:35:12 | 0:35:15
So is this a full-time job for you now really, being at home? | 0:35:15 | 0:35:20
It is a full-time job, but I've also got another job as well. | 0:35:20 | 0:35:24
-I have my...my regular job. -Yes. | 0:35:24 | 0:35:27
-And I do that like 20 odd hours a week. -Yes. | 0:35:27 | 0:35:31
-And that's my time to escape from home life. -Yeah. -I love my job. | 0:35:31 | 0:35:36
I really admire how Becky and all the young carers navigate through life. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:41
Hopefully this garden will give them a taste of the freedom they deserve. | 0:35:41 | 0:35:45
-I had an idea! -Oh, my goodness. -We could have, like... | 0:35:45 | 0:35:48
flowerpots on the bottom of each one | 0:35:48 | 0:35:51
and then draw, like, sunflowers or something. | 0:35:51 | 0:35:54
Hug! Yes. | 0:35:54 | 0:35:56
-That is lovely. So that could be on the fourth one? -Yeah. | 0:35:56 | 0:36:01
Oh, she's good, this girl. | 0:36:01 | 0:36:02
It may be going all right for Annie in the chill out area, | 0:36:08 | 0:36:12
but it's chaos in the kids' garden. | 0:36:12 | 0:36:14
We've got the tunnels in, but we're nowhere near turning them into a hobbit hill. | 0:36:14 | 0:36:18
It's more like the Somme than the Shire. | 0:36:18 | 0:36:21
Yeah, we're in trouble. | 0:36:21 | 0:36:23
I hope you want to stay tonight, | 0:36:23 | 0:36:25
cos we're going to be here a long time. | 0:36:25 | 0:36:27
Even longer than last night! | 0:36:27 | 0:36:29
Six days that's been going in. | 0:36:31 | 0:36:34
The old tunnel, the two tunnels. | 0:36:34 | 0:36:35
Six days they started that, digging the holes. | 0:36:35 | 0:36:38
Then we had to get the old pipes over | 0:36:38 | 0:36:40
and now we're working out how to retain the soil and yes, | 0:36:40 | 0:36:45
all I can hear is Richard talking about some late nights. | 0:36:45 | 0:36:48
There may very well be a late night. | 0:36:48 | 0:36:50
Or two. | 0:36:50 | 0:36:52
But there better not be more, cos we've got to finish the job. | 0:36:52 | 0:36:57
Away from the tunnels, there is progress. | 0:36:57 | 0:37:00
Joe's natural climbing frame has arrived. | 0:37:00 | 0:37:03
And when he said natural, boy, he really meant it. | 0:37:03 | 0:37:06
Not everyone's convinced. | 0:37:06 | 0:37:08
It's different. Very different. | 0:37:10 | 0:37:13
I mean, it looks like a work-in-progress at the moment. | 0:37:13 | 0:37:16
So once we can see whether things are going to hang off it or... | 0:37:16 | 0:37:21
Is it just going to look like a tree upside down or what? | 0:37:21 | 0:37:24
It does look quite crazy, like. | 0:37:24 | 0:37:27
It might not look much to teenagers, | 0:37:27 | 0:37:30
but this locally-designed climbing frame is instant fun for young kids. | 0:37:30 | 0:37:34
I didn't realise it was going to have so many different elements going on. | 0:37:34 | 0:37:38
No, yeah, we try to get as much into a small space as possible | 0:37:38 | 0:37:41
to give the kids as many things to interact with. | 0:37:41 | 0:37:44
So, a climbing net that doubles up as a hammock, | 0:37:44 | 0:37:47
a hand-carved seat | 0:37:47 | 0:37:49
and climbing grips that also add a bit of colour. | 0:37:49 | 0:37:51
This space is really going to make such difference | 0:37:53 | 0:37:56
to a group of young people's lives and if you've been inspired, | 0:37:56 | 0:37:59
why not come and help us with our next project? | 0:37:59 | 0:38:02
This Friday we'll be in Bristol, where we've been battling the elements | 0:38:02 | 0:38:06
to complete a communal garden for two very deserving schools. | 0:38:06 | 0:38:09
Is this the water feature? It's in? | 0:38:09 | 0:38:11
But having been at the mercy of the wettest summer on record, | 0:38:11 | 0:38:14
we're still not done. | 0:38:14 | 0:38:17
-This is the most horrendous weather I'd ever seen! -'And that's where you come in.' | 0:38:17 | 0:38:20
Please join us in Bristol to help finish this garden off | 0:38:20 | 0:38:24
and help celebrate its grand opening in style. | 0:38:24 | 0:38:26
Details coming up at the end of the programme. | 0:38:26 | 0:38:29
Back in Sunderland, I've come to realise that it's all too easy | 0:38:29 | 0:38:33
to assume that because you're a kid, you're carefree. | 0:38:33 | 0:38:37
So I'm keen to meet Hannah's mum, | 0:38:37 | 0:38:38
who really knows how much emotional support these young carers give. | 0:38:38 | 0:38:42
We've all absolutely fallen in love with Hannah. | 0:38:44 | 0:38:47
-She's an absolute star. You must be very proud of her. -I am very proud of her. | 0:38:47 | 0:38:51
-I don't think Hannah actually knows what she does for anybody else. -No. | 0:38:51 | 0:38:54
It's kind of something that's built into her. | 0:38:54 | 0:38:57
She does it all the time for no reason. | 0:38:57 | 0:39:01
GIRLS LAUGH | 0:39:01 | 0:39:02
For example, Rachel's sleep patterns aren't very good, | 0:39:02 | 0:39:07
so she'll come in several times a night just for reassurance, | 0:39:07 | 0:39:13
so Hannah doesn't get a lot of sleep. And obviously when she goes to school, | 0:39:13 | 0:39:16
none of the teachers really know that that goes on. | 0:39:16 | 0:39:20
-GIRLS LAUGH -And what would be the best thing | 0:39:20 | 0:39:23
that's going to come out of this garden, do you think, that we're doing? | 0:39:23 | 0:39:27
I think just the sense of being part of something bigger, | 0:39:27 | 0:39:30
giving back to the kids. | 0:39:30 | 0:39:32
To have known that they've helped create this garden | 0:39:32 | 0:39:35
and been a big part of it | 0:39:35 | 0:39:37
and that each and every one of them's got a bit of their personality within the garden. | 0:39:37 | 0:39:42
It's the penultimate day of our build. | 0:39:47 | 0:39:49
And with over 500 plants to unload, | 0:39:49 | 0:39:51
Anneka's lads from the construction college are turning out to be a rare find. | 0:39:51 | 0:39:56
I know you guys aren't plant experts by any means, | 0:39:56 | 0:39:58
but if things look the same when you stack them, put them together, yeah? | 0:39:58 | 0:40:03
And off here. Some great specimens. | 0:40:03 | 0:40:05
I only brought them in to do a bit of decking, | 0:40:09 | 0:40:12
but they've just carried on above and beyond the call of duty. | 0:40:12 | 0:40:15
-Thank you so much for all this. -Hey, it's great. | 0:40:15 | 0:40:19
It's a great learning environment for the students. They can't get this at college. | 0:40:19 | 0:40:23
We can't teach them this, it's real life problem solving and things, so... | 0:40:23 | 0:40:27
-Can I ask you a big favour? -Yes. -Will you keep an eye on this project? | 0:40:27 | 0:40:30
-Yeah. -As a college. So if they've got running repairs or something comes loose, | 0:40:30 | 0:40:35
it's great to think there's some legacy in that you can be there. | 0:40:35 | 0:40:38
And if we're down here, if there's anything needs doing, I'm sure we can lend a hand. | 0:40:38 | 0:40:43
-Hug! -Group hugs? -Hug, hug! Group hugs. | 0:40:43 | 0:40:46
It's really is exciting to think that this garden will not only | 0:40:46 | 0:40:49
benefit the young carers for years to come, | 0:40:49 | 0:40:52
but has brought the community together as well. | 0:40:52 | 0:40:54
And it's not just our college students learning new skills on-site. | 0:40:54 | 0:40:57
Me and the team carers are also adding strings to our bows. | 0:40:57 | 0:41:01
-What have you got from doing the garden? What have you taken from it? -How to garden. | 0:41:03 | 0:41:06
My mam did say to us, "It this going to inspire you to do your own garden at home?" | 0:41:06 | 0:41:10
-And I went, "Ha, no!" -No! | 0:41:10 | 0:41:13
-Do you think you'll be down here a lot? -Aye, already planning on it! | 0:41:13 | 0:41:17
But at this rate, they'll be hanging out on a building site. | 0:41:22 | 0:41:24
It's now less than 24 hours until Hannah gets her sneak preview | 0:41:24 | 0:41:28
before the grand opening day. | 0:41:28 | 0:41:30
With hundreds of plants still needing to be planted, there's a way to go. | 0:41:33 | 0:41:37
Surely it's just a matter of the volunteers getting them in the ground. | 0:41:37 | 0:41:41
-Simple, right? -Tuffers. -Yes, mate? | 0:41:41 | 0:41:43
-Take this bamboo. -Right. | 0:41:43 | 0:41:45
I'm going to stand up here and get a good placing, | 0:41:45 | 0:41:47
so if you go back there... | 0:41:47 | 0:41:49
Actually, back towards me a little bit. | 0:41:50 | 0:41:53
Yeah. No, too far. | 0:41:55 | 0:41:57
Ever since his put that hat on, he thinks he's like Napoleon! | 0:41:57 | 0:42:00
-Anywhere else. -They're like little sculptures... -All right! | 0:42:00 | 0:42:03
They're plants at the end of the day, not little sculptures, plants! | 0:42:03 | 0:42:06
No, but they're like.. They are sculptures. | 0:42:06 | 0:42:08
Where do you want these two plants? | 0:42:08 | 0:42:11
-They need... -I'm sorry I hurt your feelings. I'm sorry. | 0:42:11 | 0:42:15
I'm going to give you a nice little spot now. OK? | 0:42:15 | 0:42:18
-You're meant to talk to plants, aren't you? -Well, yes. -Do you talk to them? | 0:42:18 | 0:42:21
-But don't patronise them! -Don't... -THEY LAUGH | 0:42:21 | 0:42:24
-How's that? -Yeah, that's perfect. | 0:42:24 | 0:42:26
Oh... | 0:42:28 | 0:42:30 | |
With the site cracking on and my planting skills coming up | 0:42:30 | 0:42:33
a bit short, I've been relegated to rock collecting. | 0:42:33 | 0:42:37
Joe's asked me to go | 0:42:38 | 0:42:39
and get some stones for the fire pit in the sort of team den area. | 0:42:39 | 0:42:44
To be fair, it's quite nice to get out of doing all the shovelling. | 0:42:44 | 0:42:49
-Oh... -Lead the way, sir. | 0:42:49 | 0:42:51
Oh, dear. They're quite big stones. | 0:42:51 | 0:42:54
-You're a big lad. -I'm a big lad... | 0:42:54 | 0:42:56
I hope they're the ones that Joe wants. But they're pretty big. | 0:42:56 | 0:43:01
Sit round there, few barbecues, a few toasted marshmallows. Perfect. | 0:43:02 | 0:43:07
Back at the carer's centre, with the fire pit marked out | 0:43:07 | 0:43:11
and the faithful construction students back for more, | 0:43:11 | 0:43:14
I'm sure we'll get this built in no time. | 0:43:14 | 0:43:16
Oh, that's come up lovely. Oh, that's come up lovely, that has. | 0:43:16 | 0:43:19
Oh, that slipped in like a knife through butter. | 0:43:19 | 0:43:22
He's a good talker, but building a fire pit needs more than chat, Phil. | 0:43:22 | 0:43:27
-What? -Put it in a wheelbarrow. | 0:43:27 | 0:43:31
Put it in a wheelbarrow? All right. Don't want to upset the boss. | 0:43:31 | 0:43:34
"Oi, put it in a wheelbarrow. Put it in a wheelbarrow!" | 0:43:34 | 0:43:39
HE LAUGHS | 0:43:39 | 0:43:40
# I fell into a burning ring of fire... # | 0:43:40 | 0:43:45
Yeah, it looks a very good job. | 0:43:45 | 0:43:47
He's in the makings of being a very good landscaper at this rate. | 0:43:47 | 0:43:52
Praise indeed from Mr Grumpy! I'm stunned. | 0:43:54 | 0:43:57
I think that looks all right. Nice big fire going in there. | 0:43:58 | 0:44:01
All sitting round here. Happy days. | 0:44:01 | 0:44:05
-Yes! -HE LAUGHS | 0:44:08 | 0:44:10
Don't get too smug, Tuffers, it's the end of our last day | 0:44:10 | 0:44:14
and we're still nowhere near finishing. | 0:44:14 | 0:44:17
This den area, which looks pretty nice here | 0:44:17 | 0:44:20
but all the trim's got to go on all the rest of the benches | 0:44:20 | 0:44:23
and that's really time-consuming, very concise work. | 0:44:23 | 0:44:26
This muddy swamp over here, this is our hammock area, | 0:44:26 | 0:44:30
so poles have got to be sunk into the ground here and all these jobs | 0:44:30 | 0:44:34
sound quite little, but they take an hour or two, several hours. | 0:44:34 | 0:44:38
The planting, there's still a ton of plants over there | 0:44:38 | 0:44:41
still to be placed even in this garden. | 0:44:41 | 0:44:45
And here, with the tunnels, the famous tunnels, | 0:44:45 | 0:44:48
they've caused us so many problems, these tunnels. | 0:44:48 | 0:44:51
But they will be fantastic. They've still got to be clad, as you can see. | 0:44:51 | 0:44:55
The barking's going to go all the way down here. | 0:44:55 | 0:44:58
And this mound of earth, this is going to be flattened out | 0:44:58 | 0:45:02
and landscaped into a lovely grassy mound. | 0:45:02 | 0:45:04
It'll be all hands on deck tomorrow | 0:45:06 | 0:45:08
if we've got any hope of hitting our target. | 0:45:08 | 0:45:12
In less than five hours, we'll be giving little Hannah | 0:45:14 | 0:45:19
and then the younger child carers their very own private view | 0:45:19 | 0:45:23
before the official opening of our Sunderland Wonderland. | 0:45:23 | 0:45:27
We're really up against it, everybody. | 0:45:27 | 0:45:29
I want to get this whole mound turfed today. | 0:45:29 | 0:45:31
What we've got to do is tread it all over, | 0:45:31 | 0:45:34
we're going to have a group treading it over. Yeah? | 0:45:34 | 0:45:37
-So, you guys...come and do the dance. -Let's do shuffling. | 0:45:37 | 0:45:39
# Every day I'm shuffling... # | 0:45:39 | 0:45:43
Boogieing! Come on! | 0:45:43 | 0:45:45
-We're dancing! Let me see you dancing. -That's it. | 0:45:45 | 0:45:48
# Put your hands up... # | 0:45:50 | 0:45:52
While Joe and Phil keep the party going on Hobbit Hill, | 0:45:52 | 0:45:55
I've gone all psychedelic. | 0:45:55 | 0:45:57
"Oh!" is all I can say. They are fantastic! | 0:45:57 | 0:46:02
Oh, I've been waiting for this moment all week. | 0:46:02 | 0:46:05
The enormous flowers Hannah and the other kids helped make are ready for planting. | 0:46:05 | 0:46:09
Annie, they're fantastic. Just need a cocktail big enough for them now! | 0:46:12 | 0:46:16
-Yeah, could you make mine a double? -No problem. | 0:46:16 | 0:46:19
Over the next couple of hours, everyone's got a job to do. | 0:46:23 | 0:46:27
But when it comes to real problem solving, | 0:46:27 | 0:46:30
it takes a professional. | 0:46:30 | 0:46:31
We've got two hours to get it finished. There's a canny bit to do. | 0:46:32 | 0:46:37
I don't think we're going to get it done. | 0:46:38 | 0:46:41
We've flattened the soil on the tiles, so now the governor wants it turfed. | 0:46:41 | 0:46:45
What we're going to do is, because of the shape of the... | 0:46:45 | 0:46:48
As you know, what we want to do is lay them like bricks, so you put one down, | 0:46:50 | 0:46:56
the next one goes along here and they butt up to each other. | 0:46:56 | 0:46:59
-Quite nice. -But no overlapping. And no gaps. Anneka, concentrate! | 0:46:59 | 0:47:04
-I am concentrating! -You're not. Go to the back of the class! | 0:47:04 | 0:47:07
Shall we get another roll of turf around here? Lovely. | 0:47:12 | 0:47:14
A little bit of PMA - | 0:47:19 | 0:47:20
positive mental attitude. | 0:47:20 | 0:47:23
We haven't got long to go. Everyone's just gone up a gear. | 0:47:32 | 0:47:35
OK, guys. Amazing team effort going on over here. Fantastic! | 0:47:37 | 0:47:40
Another roll? | 0:47:40 | 0:47:41
We may be on a roll, but time's up. | 0:47:48 | 0:47:51
After nine days of seriously hard graft, | 0:47:51 | 0:47:54
we are nearly ready to show this garden to Hannah, | 0:47:54 | 0:47:57
one of the people who this garden is all for. | 0:47:57 | 0:48:00
However, we've got a whole stack of jobs still to do, | 0:48:02 | 0:48:05
starting with the sand for this sandpit | 0:48:05 | 0:48:08
and loads of planting - and that's where you come in. | 0:48:08 | 0:48:11
Last week, we gave a shout out to you, the Great British public, | 0:48:11 | 0:48:15
to come down and finish off our garden, but before we reveal | 0:48:15 | 0:48:18
who came down and gave us a hand for the final push, | 0:48:18 | 0:48:21
there's a very special girl, aged ten, | 0:48:21 | 0:48:23
who's been champing at the bit to see how we've been getting on. | 0:48:23 | 0:48:26
What you've got to do is absolutely no peeking until I tell you when | 0:48:26 | 0:48:30
so cover up, | 0:48:30 | 0:48:31
-and full hands like that, OK? -OK. | 0:48:31 | 0:48:33
One, two... | 0:48:33 | 0:48:35
Three. | 0:48:36 | 0:48:38
Oh, my God! | 0:48:41 | 0:48:43
-What do you think? -Amazing! | 0:48:45 | 0:48:47
Isn't it absolutely lovely? Shall we go and have a real snoop around? | 0:48:47 | 0:48:51
-That's the sort of climbing area, OK? -Mm-hmm. | 0:48:53 | 0:48:57
And then look at your wonderful, wonderful artwork. | 0:48:57 | 0:49:00
-Did it get finished? -It got finished! | 0:49:00 | 0:49:02
-Go and see if you can see your one. -OK. | 0:49:02 | 0:49:05
-That one, isn't it? -Yeah, look! | 0:49:05 | 0:49:08
-Isn't that amazing? -Yes! | 0:49:08 | 0:49:10
-And can you see all the shadows? -Oh, yes! | 0:49:10 | 0:49:13
-Shall we run over the bridge? -Yes! | 0:49:13 | 0:49:15
Go on, we need someone to christen it. | 0:49:15 | 0:49:17
I'm excited! | 0:49:20 | 0:49:21
I'm excited! | 0:49:21 | 0:49:23
Oh, I think we can safely say that Hannah approves. | 0:49:23 | 0:49:26
She's so excited, which is just, just the reaction I hoped, | 0:49:26 | 0:49:30
that she'd be thrilled with everything. | 0:49:30 | 0:49:32
'And if this is Hannah's reaction, | 0:49:32 | 0:49:34
'I can't wait to get this garden really finished | 0:49:34 | 0:49:36
'and see what everyone thinks at our grand opening. But first, | 0:49:36 | 0:49:40
'let's see if the other young carers approve.' | 0:49:40 | 0:49:43
Welcome to your playground! | 0:49:45 | 0:49:47
They love the bridge! | 0:49:48 | 0:49:50
CHILDREN LAUGH, SQUEAL | 0:49:56 | 0:49:58
Well, I think that's a thumbs up. But what about Sue? | 0:49:58 | 0:50:01
OK, one, two... | 0:50:03 | 0:50:05
Three. Have a little look. | 0:50:05 | 0:50:07
Oh, wow! | 0:50:09 | 0:50:11
Oh, that is just absolutely... | 0:50:12 | 0:50:15
That's nothing what... That's far, far more | 0:50:15 | 0:50:18
than what I ever thought it was going to be. | 0:50:18 | 0:50:20
How good is that? | 0:50:23 | 0:50:24
HANNAH SQUEALS | 0:50:24 | 0:50:27
Hannah's over there. She's just been shouting, | 0:50:30 | 0:50:33
"Mum, look at me on the rope!" She's so excited. She's amazed. | 0:50:33 | 0:50:37
Absolutely amazing, overwhelming. | 0:50:37 | 0:50:40
Now, look, they're doing races now through the tunnel. | 0:50:40 | 0:50:43
That tunnel is going to be the most popular... | 0:50:43 | 0:50:45
the thing that caused us the biggest headache, | 0:50:45 | 0:50:47
-putting this wretched tunnel in... -It's been worth it! | 0:50:47 | 0:50:50
-..is the best thing! -Tunnelgate comes good in the end. | 0:50:50 | 0:50:53
Sorry to ruin the party, but actually, we're not done. | 0:50:56 | 0:50:59
We've got the sandpit to do, I've got a surprise coming in over here. | 0:50:59 | 0:51:02
-Oh! -We've got more bark, more planting. This isn't finished. | 0:51:02 | 0:51:05
90% of the way there, but not done yet. | 0:51:05 | 0:51:07
I'm liking the sound of the surprise. | 0:51:07 | 0:51:09
-I've got a surprise. -Flowers, champagne? -Nothing like that. For me? | 0:51:09 | 0:51:12
I can't tell you, but it's a good one. | 0:51:12 | 0:51:14
Well, it's been a few weeks since we revealed the garden to Hannah and Sue | 0:51:18 | 0:51:22
and now I'm on my way back to Sunderland Young Carers | 0:51:22 | 0:51:25
for one final push and the grand opening. | 0:51:25 | 0:51:28
Joe's on site early to assess how much we've got to do. | 0:51:30 | 0:51:33
The list is getting longer. | 0:51:33 | 0:51:35
One thing's certain - we'll need some help to get it all done. | 0:51:35 | 0:51:39
The main jobs - completing the planting, | 0:51:39 | 0:51:43
filling the sandpit, and of course, | 0:51:43 | 0:51:45
there's Joe's surprise. | 0:51:45 | 0:51:46
In last week's programme, we called out for volunteers. | 0:51:48 | 0:51:51
Let's hope the Olympic spirit is still alive and kicking. | 0:51:51 | 0:51:54
Something tells me I'm going to get very wet today. | 0:51:54 | 0:51:57
Gradually, the garden is filling up. | 0:51:59 | 0:52:02
People have come from far and wide to help us. | 0:52:02 | 0:52:04
This is a proper army of volunteers today! | 0:52:04 | 0:52:06
Thank you so much. What have you brought? | 0:52:06 | 0:52:08
All these lovely things for us to plant. | 0:52:08 | 0:52:10
-What's your daughter called? -Tiana. | 0:52:10 | 0:52:12
Tiana, thank you. Are you eating it? Oh, you're picking the leaves off! | 0:52:12 | 0:52:15
Everyone gets stuck in, and as usual, | 0:52:15 | 0:52:19
Joe's issuing the orders. | 0:52:19 | 0:52:20
OK, now, you two place the mushrooms where you think they'll be good. | 0:52:20 | 0:52:24
Can you take the wheelbarrows full of weeds? | 0:52:24 | 0:52:26
As well as 500 plants to go in, | 0:52:26 | 0:52:28
there's loads of little finishing touches, including the sunshade | 0:52:28 | 0:52:33
and our Flowerpot Gang volunteers are on planting duty. | 0:52:33 | 0:52:36
I think it's, like, really good | 0:52:36 | 0:52:39
because it brings everybody together and there's loads of people here. | 0:52:39 | 0:52:43
I saw the programme, and I was totally inspired | 0:52:43 | 0:52:46
and I thought, "I've got a free day, I'll come along and help." | 0:52:46 | 0:52:50
-Have you got a connection with this place? -I have, yes. | 0:52:50 | 0:52:52
My oldest son's autistic | 0:52:52 | 0:52:54
-and his brother, who's nine, is a young carer. -Right, OK. | 0:52:54 | 0:52:58
So he'll be able to use the centre. | 0:52:58 | 0:53:00
'I've a nasty feeling that Joe's left the worst job, | 0:53:01 | 0:53:04
'filling the empty sandpit, to yours truly.' | 0:53:04 | 0:53:06
Well, you know the sandpit in there? | 0:53:06 | 0:53:08
-You know the lovely heart-shaped sandpit, Tuffers? -Yeah... | 0:53:08 | 0:53:11
-There's one problem with it. -It's got no sand in it! | 0:53:11 | 0:53:15
So you want that lot of sand in the sandpit? | 0:53:15 | 0:53:17
It's not going to move itself! | 0:53:17 | 0:53:19
I hope they enjoy playing in this sandpit. | 0:53:19 | 0:53:21
There's about eight tonnes of it round there. | 0:53:21 | 0:53:24
Eight tonnes of desert | 0:53:24 | 0:53:26
waiting to be shifted! | 0:53:26 | 0:53:28
I think I'm going to need some volunteers, | 0:53:28 | 0:53:30
and when in doubt, always ask a policeman. | 0:53:30 | 0:53:33
-Ladies. -Hiya. -Just what I needed. | 0:53:33 | 0:53:36
We've got a massive job. We've got to get the sand | 0:53:36 | 0:53:39
from the car park into there, eight tonnes of it. | 0:53:39 | 0:53:41
-You feeling strong? -Yes. -Yeah! | 0:53:41 | 0:53:43
I think I'll get some other volunteers to give us a hand. | 0:53:44 | 0:53:47
-Where do you... Over here? -Yes, sir. | 0:53:47 | 0:53:49
-Where have you come from, sir? -I actually live in Sunderland. | 0:53:51 | 0:53:54
OK, and what's your connection with this area and the garden? | 0:53:54 | 0:53:57
I just watched your programme the other week and enjoyed it | 0:53:57 | 0:53:59
so I thought I'd volunteer. | 0:53:59 | 0:54:00
'Thanks to me barrow boys and girls, the sandpit is nearly full.' | 0:54:00 | 0:54:04
We've got it going now, we're moving now. | 0:54:04 | 0:54:07
I understand what these young carers go through. | 0:54:07 | 0:54:10
It should be the time when they're enjoying themselves and being out and about, | 0:54:10 | 0:54:14
and they can't, so I thought the least I can do | 0:54:14 | 0:54:17
is come over and dig a few holes. | 0:54:17 | 0:54:19
Where's Joe? | 0:54:21 | 0:54:23
He's hiding in a corner with a treat for Becky and the teens. | 0:54:23 | 0:54:26
Under here is my surprise. | 0:54:26 | 0:54:29
Now, it's a good one. I'm going to get young carers over. | 0:54:29 | 0:54:31
Chaps! | 0:54:31 | 0:54:33
-Now, you're never going to guess what this is. -What is it? | 0:54:33 | 0:54:36
What do you think it is? | 0:54:36 | 0:54:38
-It's a swimming pool. -A swimming pool? | 0:54:38 | 0:54:40
It's an outdoor table tennis table. Hours of fun. | 0:54:42 | 0:54:45
-Really nice surprise. I wasn't expecting it. -I can get practice in now! | 0:54:45 | 0:54:48
-Right, go on, then. -Like that? | 0:54:48 | 0:54:50
Becky, Becky! Try hitting the ball, rather than the air around it. | 0:54:50 | 0:54:55
-Oh, no! -Over the... | 0:54:55 | 0:54:57
Excuse me! | 0:54:57 | 0:54:59
I'm barrowing all this sand, eight tonnes of it over there, | 0:54:59 | 0:55:02
and you're there messing about! | 0:55:02 | 0:55:04
-Have you got it in yet? -Well... | 0:55:04 | 0:55:05
LAUGHTER | 0:55:05 | 0:55:07
-Finish your game, and then switch on. -OK. | 0:55:07 | 0:55:10
Oooh! | 0:55:10 | 0:55:11 | |
With the beds finished, | 0:55:11 | 0:55:13
the sandpit full | 0:55:13 | 0:55:15
and Joe's surprise delivered, it's time to celebrate. | 0:55:15 | 0:55:18
Right, well, I think we're nearly finished. I think we're there. | 0:55:18 | 0:55:22
So now, after ten days of hard graft, | 0:55:22 | 0:55:25
we've transformed bland parkland | 0:55:25 | 0:55:27
into a Sunderland wonderland for youngsters. | 0:55:27 | 0:55:31
A place where Becky, Hannah and all the young carers | 0:55:31 | 0:55:34
can rediscover their lost childhoods. | 0:55:34 | 0:55:36

To thank the Flowerpot Gang and all our brilliant helpers, | 0:55:41 | 0:55:45
the young carers throw a party. | 0:55:45 | 0:55:48
I would just like to thank everybody | 0:55:48 | 0:55:50
for coming and making this garden happen. | 0:55:50 | 0:55:52
Yeah, there must be over 100 people here today. You've been amazing. | 0:55:52 | 0:55:56
We've been inundated with help. Thank you so much. | 0:55:56 | 0:55:59
Now it's time to hand it over to the people who deserve it the most, | 0:55:59 | 0:56:04
the Sunderland Young Carers! | 0:56:04 | 0:56:06
CHEERING | 0:56:06 | 0:56:08
It's fantastic that something like this | 0:56:11 | 0:56:14
just brings together the community. | 0:56:14 | 0:56:16
It shows the community spirit that we know is here. | 0:56:16 | 0:56:18
A lot of people forget that. Thank you very, very much. | 0:56:18 | 0:56:21
APPLAUSE | 0:56:21 | 0:56:23
I just want to say a massive, massive thank you | 0:56:23 | 0:56:25
to each and everybody who's come out today to help us. | 0:56:25 | 0:56:28
The garden means so much to young carers. | 0:56:28 | 0:56:30
I think each and every one of us is proud to be part of this programme | 0:56:30 | 0:56:33
so thank you very much, and thanks, guys. | 0:56:33 | 0:56:35
Group hug! | 0:56:35 | 0:56:37
And now it's little Hannah's turn to take centre stage. | 0:56:39 | 0:56:42
On behalf of all the young carers, | 0:56:42 | 0:56:44
we have figured out our name. | 0:56:44 | 0:56:46
It's The Garden Of Dreams | 0:56:46 | 0:56:48
because it's always been our dream to have a garden. | 0:56:48 | 0:56:51

Well, if you've been inspired by what you've seen, | 0:57:10 | 0:57:13
why not form your own Flowerpot Gang | 0:57:13 | 0:57:16
and transform a piece of land that's unused near where you live? | 0:57:16 | 0:57:19
I can't tell you how much it can bring everyone together. | 0:57:19 | 0:57:22
Next week, we're in Bristol, | 0:57:26 | 0:57:29
where a derelict garden next to a school is crying out for help. | 0:57:29 | 0:57:33
A 12-year-old pupil called Callum | 0:57:33 | 0:57:36
has a dream of rebuilding this unloved plot of land. | 0:57:36 | 0:57:40
His teacher Claire has contacted the Flowerpot Gang to ask for our help. | 0:57:40 | 0:57:45
They've got nowhere to go. | 0:57:45 | 0:57:46
They've got a room, which has got some chairs in. | 0:57:46 | 0:57:49
It's not very inspiring. | 0:57:49 | 0:57:51
Callum and his classmates are kids with behavioural problems | 0:57:51 | 0:57:55
and Claire believes the school desperately needs a garden | 0:57:55 | 0:57:58
to give their pupils a much-needed outdoor haven. | 0:57:58 | 0:58:01
A tough challenge in any conditions, | 0:58:01 | 0:58:04
but from day one, it poured. | 0:58:04 | 0:58:06
THUNDER RUMBLES | 0:58:06 | 0:58:08
Is this the water feature? I love it! | 0:58:08 | 0:58:11
'And it poured...' | 0:58:11 | 0:58:12
It's hell. We're in hell. | 0:58:12 | 0:58:14
Get the barrow, follow me. | 0:58:14 | 0:58:16
'The rain finally gave us a break.' | 0:58:16 | 0:58:19
Come on! | 0:58:19 | 0:58:20
'But the Bristol garden still isn't finished | 0:58:20 | 0:58:23
'and that's where you come in.' | 0:58:23 | 0:58:25
We'd like you to come along this Friday | 0:58:25 | 0:58:27
and help us finish the project. | 0:58:27 | 0:58:29
