Welcome back to Hair, where the search for Britain's best amateur hairstylist continues.

0:00:020:00:06

Last week, eight contestants went head-to-head to impress the judges.

0:00:060:00:09

Overall, I'm a little bit disappointed.

0:00:090:00:11

Royal hairdresser Denise McAdam,

0:00:110:00:13

and international celebrity stylist, Alain Pichon.

0:00:130:00:18

This line's not good enough, it should have been stronger.

0:00:180:00:21

The amateur stylists did their best to create quiffs...

0:00:210:00:24

I'm winging it.

0:00:240:00:26

..cut with precision...

0:00:260:00:27

I've never cut hair before.

0:00:270:00:29

..and deliver dramatic, fairytale designs.

0:00:300:00:33

Oh, my goodness, she's in there!

0:00:330:00:36

That is a fairytale.

0:00:360:00:37

All in a bid to stay in the competition.

0:00:370:00:40

And while critical care nurse Annie

0:00:400:00:42

impressed the judges with her Snow Queen.

0:00:420:00:45

Wonderful.

0:00:450:00:46

Sadly, for 22-year-old beautician, Amy, the fairytale was over.

0:00:460:00:50

The fairytale wasn't a fairytale.

0:00:500:00:53

And she had to leave.

0:00:530:00:54

This week, the judges are raising the stakes.

0:00:550:00:58

Everything's tricky about what I'm doing.

0:00:580:01:00

Oh, I have no idea.

0:01:000:01:01

And the stylists will have to braid...

0:01:030:01:06

I'm panicking a little bit.

0:01:060:01:07

...and bouffant to their best ability to avoid elimination.

0:01:070:01:10

I'm scared.

0:01:100:01:13

Oh, no!

0:01:130:01:14

Two days of intricate cutting and styling await the contestants.

0:01:140:01:18

The floor's been swept, the scissors are sharpened,

0:01:180:01:21

the judges are ready.

0:01:210:01:22

Let's get to work on Hair.

0:01:220:01:24

Oh!

0:01:250:01:26

-Welcome back. How are you feeling? You good?

-Good.

-OK.

0:01:360:01:39

As you know, the first challenge of every week is to incorporate

0:01:390:01:43

a set element.

0:01:430:01:44

This week's set element, plaits and braids.

0:01:440:01:48

So, put it up, put it down, cut it,

0:01:480:01:50

do what you want with your hair,

0:01:500:01:52

but you must incorporate the set element.

0:01:520:01:54

You must be strong on your section in the composition of your design.

0:01:540:01:58

We'd like to see big and bold shape in the same time.

0:01:590:02:02

OK, your models await. You have two hours.

0:02:020:02:06

Time starts now. Get to it.

0:02:060:02:08

Hi!

0:02:110:02:13

In this challenge, the stylists have pre-selected models

0:02:140:02:18

with a type of hair they want to work with.

0:02:180:02:20

Hey, lovely, let's get cracking.

0:02:200:02:23

As plaits and braids come in many different styles,

0:02:230:02:26

the contestants can choose to do any kind they like.

0:02:260:02:29

I have to plead ignorance.

0:02:300:02:32

I do not know the difference between a plait and a braid.

0:02:320:02:35

-I imagine I'm not alone.

-Well, it's quite simple actually.

0:02:350:02:38

If it's onto the scalp, it's a braid,

0:02:380:02:40

and when it leaves, it becomes a plait.

0:02:400:02:42

So how are they going to impress you?

0:02:420:02:44

How can they achieve the perfect braid or plait?

0:02:440:02:47

I think it's about making sure that each strand is very even,

0:02:480:02:51

very neat all the way through, from the roots to the ends.

0:02:510:02:54

We want to see tightness, neatness and precision.

0:02:540:02:57

Whatever type of plait or braid the stylists create, they must

0:02:580:03:02

form a clear, overall 360-degree design around their model's head.

0:03:020:03:08

The hair that I asked for was long and blonde, simply

0:03:080:03:11

because I thought, with lighter hair, it would be easier to see

0:03:110:03:14

the braiding pattern and the techniques I have done.

0:03:140:03:17

Marvin started cutting his sister's hair when he was still a schoolboy.

0:03:170:03:22

His design will include a netted rope braid, and cane rows.

0:03:230:03:28

-Morning, Marvin.

-Morning, Denise.

-You're getting well ahead here.

0:03:280:03:32

Yeah, a cane row is something that I normally do.

0:03:320:03:36

I can see the nice channels starting.

0:03:360:03:38

You've got two hours to do this challenge.

0:03:380:03:40

Do you think that's enough time?

0:03:400:03:42

I'm used to a cane row when I do extensions.

0:03:420:03:44

It's not really a problem for me. I think I'll be OK.

0:03:440:03:47

Cane rows are a classic braid, created by weaving small sections

0:03:470:03:52

of hair close to the scalp, and are so-called, as they should

0:03:520:03:56

run in straight, evenly-spaced lines, like rows of sugar cane.

0:03:560:04:00

I don't usually do plaits and braids day to day, usually I'm doing

0:04:030:04:07

sort of vintage sets and things, so it's something new for me.

0:04:070:04:10

25-year-old Laura is a fan of all things retro.

0:04:120:04:15

Laura has chosen a 1940s inspired design,

0:04:170:04:20

including a French braid and fishtail plaits.

0:04:200:04:24

I think I'm brushing it out, and being really apprehensive to

0:04:240:04:27

start, but I'm just going to have to get started on it.

0:04:270:04:31

Laura starts by creating a fishtail plait.

0:04:310:04:34

A perfect fishtail should have a distinctive tapered shape

0:04:350:04:39

at the end, just like a fish's tail.

0:04:390:04:43

The tapering is created by beginning with three strands of hair,

0:04:430:04:47

then splitting them into finer and finer strands

0:04:470:04:50

as they progress down the plait.

0:04:500:04:51

I don't often use plaits and braids.

0:04:550:04:58

They're not I would say, current and, at the moment, I'm not

0:04:580:05:01

seeing a lot of plaits and braids on runways and such.

0:05:010:05:05

16-year-old Kobi is his mum's personal hairdresser.

0:05:060:05:10

Kobi is planning a plaited updo with twisted plaits.

0:05:100:05:15

I do want to do it quite naturally

0:05:150:05:16

and flowy, rather than really extreme and tight.

0:05:160:05:20

And have that nicely effortless look to it.

0:05:200:05:22

Kobi is a little shy with it, but it's easy to make it loose.

0:05:260:05:29

It's much more difficult to make it tight. So let's see what happens.

0:05:290:05:32

What I've got planned, I think, should work nicely, if it works.

0:05:380:05:42

Everything's tricky about what I'm doing.

0:05:420:05:44

Mum-of-two Katie is the one her neighbours go

0:05:460:05:48

to for styling their hair.

0:05:480:05:50

That's beautiful, thank you.

0:05:500:05:52

Katie will create intricately woven braids

0:05:520:05:55

to form part of a Mohican design.

0:05:550:05:58

All the ends of the woven bit, which I need to kind of make

0:05:580:06:01

a feature, I'm plaiting it all, and then I'm going to literally

0:06:010:06:05

hold onto one strand, hold the other ones there and it

0:06:050:06:08

kind of whooshes up, and you get a bit of a funny effect going on.

0:06:080:06:12

I really like what Katie is doing. Micro-braiding.

0:06:130:06:18

It's very fine, fine strands of hair connected into each other's.

0:06:180:06:24

The interweaving is kind of complicated,

0:06:240:06:26

and that makes it interesting for what she's doing.

0:06:260:06:28

I haven't seen anyone else's other than Marvin's,

0:06:300:06:32

and I can't believe he's got that much braiding done in that time.

0:06:320:06:35

I'll be worrying.

0:06:350:06:36

I'm a nurse by day, it's just been so intense.

0:06:490:06:52

Intensive-care nurse Annie enjoys styling friends' hair to relax.

0:06:520:06:57

Beautiful.

0:06:570:06:58

Annie is going to create a complicated basket weave

0:06:580:07:02

as a feature of her design.

0:07:020:07:04

Basket weaves can be quite fiddly.

0:07:040:07:06

You've got to kind of get all your hands in there

0:07:060:07:09

and make sure that your positioning of your fingers are correct.

0:07:090:07:13

Annie takes a large, flat section of hair and divides into strands.

0:07:130:07:18

She weaves outer strands horizontally through

0:07:180:07:21

the vertical strands, all the way down the section of hair,

0:07:210:07:25

in the same way a wicker basket is woven.

0:07:250:07:28

Well, Annie, she's reaching another level.

0:07:280:07:31

Basket weaving, to that degree, fat sections, fat strands,

0:07:310:07:34

looks really good.

0:07:340:07:36

Over.

0:07:370:07:39

Under.

0:07:390:07:41

-I have to kind of say it to myself, "Over, under."

-One, two, three.

0:07:410:07:47

I love the fact you've got red hair. Ginger power!

0:07:480:07:51

Photographer's stylist Dominika likes to stand out from the crowd.

0:07:550:07:59

Ta-dah!

0:07:590:08:01

Dominika's design will feature a three-dimensional birdcage plait.

0:08:010:08:06

I'm going to do my favourite plait, it's called birdcage plait.

0:08:090:08:13

It's a very precise one, but it looks great,

0:08:130:08:16

so hopefully it will work.

0:08:160:08:18

The plait is woven like a fish tail,

0:08:180:08:21

but with an additional strand left loose at the root.

0:08:210:08:24

This strand is gradually woven into the plait

0:08:240:08:27

and then pulled, to create the three-dimensional effect.

0:08:270:08:31

So once you pull it, you're getting this effect.

0:08:310:08:34

It turns it into something more fancy.

0:08:340:08:37

Last week I got loads of African hair,

0:08:480:08:50

so I wanted to do something really different

0:08:500:08:53

and show that you can do these kind of styles on Caucasian hair as well.

0:08:530:08:57

I'm trying to push the boat out a little bit more.

0:08:570:09:00

Former secondary school teacher Ebuni has styled her own hair

0:09:000:09:04

since she was a teenager.

0:09:040:09:06

Ebuni's design will feature an 11-strand plait

0:09:060:09:09

and a feather-looped headband.

0:09:090:09:11

I am trying to do a feather braid, so what I'm going to do is a braid

0:09:110:09:15

that's going to come across her forehead, kind of like a headband.

0:09:150:09:20

So, a feather braid is a normal three-strand braid,

0:09:200:09:23

but every time you cross over, you drop a little bit of hair,

0:09:230:09:26

so it leaves like a feather.

0:09:260:09:28

And I'm incorporating that feather back into the braid

0:09:280:09:31

further down, so it kind of forms like a loop section,

0:09:310:09:34

and obviously, as I'm going down the braid, I'm losing more hair,

0:09:340:09:38

so the base one is getting a little bit thinner as well.

0:09:380:09:41

So that's why it's a bit more tricky.

0:09:410:09:43

-Hiya.

-Hello.

0:09:480:09:50

I see you've stepped out of a time machine from the '50s again.

0:09:500:09:53

-Loving it.

-Thanks.

-What's the least '50s item of clothing you have?

0:09:530:09:57

I got a onesie, that's not very...

0:09:570:09:59

-OK, how's the hair going?

-It's going OK.

-Yeah?

0:09:590:10:03

I assume they never had braids in the '50s either.

0:10:030:10:05

There was definitely a craze to sort of have a ponytail going across

0:10:050:10:09

the top of the head, but this is just totally out of my comfort zone.

0:10:090:10:14

I've got some bows,

0:10:140:10:15

so maybe that's adding a little bit of a vintage touch, maybe.

0:10:150:10:18

-Best of luck. Keep it going.

-Thank you.

0:10:180:10:20

20 minutes left, guys.

0:10:270:10:29

20 minutes to finish what you're doing.

0:10:290:10:31

With less than half an hour to go, the stylists need

0:10:310:10:34

to focus on bringing together their overall design.

0:10:340:10:37

There is an error at the back that I'm not so happy with,

0:10:390:10:42

just because I found that I've not got a big enough plait to fill

0:10:420:10:46

that shape of that big circle.

0:10:460:10:49

Oh, my God.

0:10:530:10:54

Marvin is struggling to finish his netted rope braid.

0:10:540:10:59

Stressful, bro.

0:10:590:11:00

Oh, my life.

0:11:010:11:03

Yeah, I'm panicking a little bit.

0:11:030:11:07

Here he is. Marvin, are you happy?

0:11:070:11:10

Oh, I don't know what I'm thinking right now.

0:11:110:11:13

What do you mean? Is it going wrong?

0:11:130:11:16

You've got to explain to me, because, to me, it looks perfect.

0:11:160:11:18

I think I'm starting to panic a bit.

0:11:180:11:21

I'm just used to working more with Afro-Caribbean hair,

0:11:210:11:24

so with European hair, it just moves, so it's a lot harder to work.

0:11:240:11:30

You requested this particular hair, though, didn't you?

0:11:300:11:33

OK, you're going to have some points

0:11:330:11:35

for stepping out of your comfort zone.

0:11:350:11:36

-Good luck, Marvin, good luck.

-Thank you.

0:11:360:11:38

The stylists have just a few minutes to put the finishing touches

0:11:430:11:46

to their creations.

0:11:460:11:48

I don't want any ties or bobbles,

0:11:480:11:50

so I've teased it with my fingers, and then I backcombed it.

0:11:500:11:53

Then all I've done is sprayed some hairspray on.

0:11:530:11:56

I don't know what they're going to think.

0:11:580:12:00

But, it's the first time I've ever done a braided style,

0:12:000:12:03

so hopefully, they see that and they like it.

0:12:030:12:07

I don't think I've breathed for the past hour.

0:12:080:12:11

-It's not as perfect, but it will do.

-Done?

-Yeah.

0:12:160:12:20

Thank you, guys. All stop!

0:12:260:12:28

Step away from the hair.

0:12:280:12:30

Denise and Alain will be looking for well-defined plaits

0:12:300:12:34

and a good overall design.

0:12:340:12:36

Let the judgements commence.

0:12:360:12:38

So, let's have a chat with Annie.

0:12:380:12:39

Annie, question. Did you intend for her to look this German?

0:12:450:12:50

I was going for more pagan.

0:12:510:12:53

If she had two steins in her hand...

0:12:530:12:56

You can see the shape, basket weaves, it's not easy.

0:12:560:13:00

You can see exactly what it is.

0:13:000:13:02

I like the way that you didn't use any elastic band on the end,

0:13:020:13:06

but just a backcombing effect.

0:13:060:13:09

Don't be afraid to frame the face

0:13:090:13:11

and really give a little bit more attention to the finish itself.

0:13:110:13:16

It's got a nice S shape on your weave, so it's not a diagonal

0:13:160:13:19

with, it's a nice S, and the way you've followed the hair through.

0:13:190:13:22

-I didn't notice that.

-Which is lovely.

0:13:220:13:25

-I think it's a good attempt, really good attempt.

-Thank you.

0:13:250:13:28

This is unusual, to see birdcage technique, and you can see

0:13:340:13:39

through the transparency that it criss-crosses itself.

0:13:390:13:42

So you have created a great hairstyle.

0:13:420:13:45

We can turn it right round and there's interest from all angles

0:13:450:13:48

-and it's very neat, and your lines are lovely.

-I like it really much.

0:13:480:13:52

Cool. Thank you.

0:13:520:13:53

Great. Really good effect,

0:14:010:14:02

and you can see the distinctive shape.

0:14:020:14:05

This is nice and neat. Your channels are nice.

0:14:050:14:07

The ones that are a bit untidy, they're hidden, but this is lovely.

0:14:070:14:11

This work here is really intricate.

0:14:110:14:14

Great effect, and I do think that choosing blonde hair

0:14:140:14:17

is a good, good idea.

0:14:170:14:19

Really the roots comes out and the texture comes out a lot stronger.

0:14:190:14:23

Thank you very much.

0:14:230:14:25

It's a little bit untidy,

0:14:290:14:30

so there's not enough definition between each plait.

0:14:300:14:33

It's kind of got, I hate to use the word,

0:14:330:14:36

a slight birds-nesty feel going on.

0:14:360:14:38

The tightness is missing.

0:14:380:14:41

The cleanness of it. If it was a lot cleaner, it would have worked.

0:14:410:14:45

It's almost like you want to lift all these plaits up.

0:14:450:14:48

-You can actually create more of a style.

-Thank you.

0:14:480:14:51

-Mmm!

-That's fab.

-It's looking really clean.

0:14:570:15:01

Let's see the braids.

0:15:010:15:03

We have the classic braid.

0:15:030:15:06

French braid on the back, fishtail on the side,

0:15:060:15:09

and the bow. Nice technique, huh?

0:15:090:15:12

This is the simplicity of the shape we are looking for, but overall,

0:15:120:15:16

the symmetry, the finishing of the bows, it's a good attempt.

0:15:160:15:21

You seem almost a bit surprised

0:15:210:15:23

by the positivity from the judges there.

0:15:230:15:25

I am, I mean, I'm not a braider, I don't braid hair.

0:15:250:15:28

-Before we move on, are we all agreed that Laura is a natural?

-I like it.

0:15:280:15:32

-Look at this lady. It's like she's from the future.

-Yeah.

0:15:400:15:45

You made a strong statement with this technique, which is fantastic.

0:15:450:15:49

It really is embroidery on here, actually.

0:15:490:15:52

I would like to have seen more of these. So tight.

0:15:520:15:56

Your fingers must be raw by doing it as tight as that.

0:15:560:15:59

It doesn't even look real.

0:15:590:16:00

The overall feels like we don't see the small braiding in it.

0:16:000:16:04

You've got to lift it up to see what's going on around it.

0:16:040:16:07

Talking about mohawk, make it look completely like a mo,

0:16:070:16:11

and really stand it up as much as possible, so you can reveal

0:16:110:16:15

all your hard work, because it's pretty incredible.

0:16:150:16:19

Dynamite!

0:16:190:16:20

-She's just showing off now.

-Yes, this is pretty, I think.

0:16:270:16:30

-Very pretty.

-Really cute.

-It is.

0:16:300:16:32

Even if you just lifted it a tiny bit, just a little bit

0:16:320:16:36

so it flowed in with the hairline, but your plait's nice and tight.

0:16:360:16:40

Very interesting techniques, so you are the only one using, how many?

0:16:400:16:45

-11 strands.

-11 strands! Look at that. That's pretty effective.

0:16:450:16:49

I think I would have wanted to move it just a bit

0:16:490:16:52

so we can see all the strands and see the basket you created in there.

0:16:520:16:57

But it's very pretty.

0:16:570:16:58

Well done, guys. Fabulous work.

0:17:000:17:02

You're all sickeningly talented.

0:17:020:17:04

So before the next challenge, go and grab yourself some tea and biccies.

0:17:040:17:08

-Who shone for you?

-Dominika.

0:17:100:17:13

You know, her plaits were very neat and tight.

0:17:130:17:16

I think Marvin's technically getting really good.

0:17:160:17:20

During the challenge, I kind of got a bit angry with myself.

0:17:200:17:23

I didn't think that I was doing exactly what I set out to do,

0:17:230:17:27

but after the comments from the judges, yeah, I was very happy.

0:17:270:17:30

I was kind of in my element. I was so pleased.

0:17:300:17:33

Now it's time to move the challenge to the blockheads.

0:17:380:17:41

This week, Denise and Alain want accurately cut layers

0:17:410:17:44

and beautifully-rolled rollers and big, big, big hair.

0:17:440:17:49

This round is all about mastering a basic haircutting technique.

0:17:490:17:54

This week, it's layering.

0:17:540:17:56

The judges want the stylist to perfectly replicate this,

0:17:570:18:00

a long, layered cut, set to perfection in rollers,

0:18:000:18:03

to look just like this.

0:18:030:18:05

As we know, this is all about precision and accuracy.

0:18:070:18:10

What am I looking at, Denise?

0:18:100:18:11

You're looking at a classical, long layered haircut

0:18:110:18:14

and a very traditional set.

0:18:140:18:16

Now, I think Alain can maybe explain the haircut.

0:18:160:18:19

This is a very symmetrical haircut.

0:18:190:18:22

Be very, very strict on the balance.

0:18:220:18:25

Exact same lengths either side.

0:18:250:18:27

Once the hair is cut, it must be set in rollers and styled.

0:18:270:18:32

This is the finished look that we'd like you to recreate,

0:18:320:18:35

so use your common sense and your creativity to follow this exactly.

0:18:350:18:39

OK.

0:18:390:18:40

Don't forget the judges will be ranking you at the end of this,

0:18:400:18:43

so do your very best.

0:18:430:18:45

You have two hours and 15 minutes in which to complete this task.

0:18:450:18:48

Go and reacquaint yourself with your old friends,

0:18:480:18:51

the blockheads over there.

0:18:510:18:52

And off you go. Good luck.

0:18:520:18:53

The long layered haircut is used to give body

0:18:550:18:57

and volume to hair without changing the overall length.

0:18:570:19:01

The stylists have been given a sectioning pattern,

0:19:080:19:11

or map, to help them.

0:19:110:19:12

First time I've ever seen this in my life.

0:19:130:19:15

I'm scared.

0:19:190:19:20

I'm not sure how I'm feeling.

0:19:240:19:26

Trying to get my head around the cutting pattern we've been

0:19:260:19:29

given, so, I hope that's what I'm supposed to be doing.

0:19:290:19:32

I call this one just out of the shower, and this one grandma's hair.

0:19:370:19:41

And I would say that if you put that on Rita Ora's head,

0:19:410:19:43

you would change your mind.

0:19:430:19:45

-That's a good point, actually, yes.

-Ah, you see!

0:19:450:19:47

Is it tricky cutting hair like this?

0:19:470:19:48

I believe it is a little tricky.

0:19:480:19:50

You just have to make sure your elevation is right,

0:19:500:19:52

your angle is perfect, and that will give you a perfect balance.

0:19:520:19:56

The way you are speaking,

0:19:560:19:57

I'm envisaging a complete disaster out there.

0:19:570:19:59

For beginners attempting long layers,

0:20:010:20:03

the hair should first be divided into four large sections,

0:20:030:20:07

one centre parting and a diagonal running from ear to ear.

0:20:070:20:11

The next step is to cut a guide layer.

0:20:140:20:16

This will determine the overall length of all of the other

0:20:160:20:19

layers in the haircut.

0:20:190:20:20

At the moment, I'm a bit scared,

0:20:210:20:23

because I don't really know what I'm doing.

0:20:230:20:25

The guide layer is cut by pulling a front section of hair forward

0:20:250:20:29

and cutting at a 45 degree angle.

0:20:290:20:33

The first cut you make is the most important cut,

0:20:330:20:36

it's the first line of where you're going.

0:20:360:20:38

Once you've cut...

0:20:390:20:40

Oh, man, I don't like this challenge.

0:20:400:20:43

..you've created that line, and you have to stick with it now.

0:20:430:20:47

I've gone far too short on my first cut.

0:20:470:20:49

Get your first cut wrong, you're gone.

0:20:490:20:51

An identical guide must then be cut on the other side of the head

0:20:520:20:56

to achieve a symmetrical haircut.

0:20:560:20:59

This cut's all about symmetry,

0:20:590:21:00

so that your haircut is completely balanced.

0:21:000:21:03

It's a little bit longer on this side, so I need to go in again.

0:21:030:21:07

As you can see here, completely different lengths.

0:21:070:21:11

The guide layers are then lifted up to a 90 degree angle

0:21:110:21:15

so the remaining layers can be matched to them.

0:21:150:21:20

My...!

0:21:200:21:21

In the hairdressing world,

0:21:210:21:24

cutting in this position is known as elevation.

0:21:240:21:27

I'm just trying to get my angle straight.

0:21:280:21:30

Just trying my hardest.

0:21:310:21:33

I see hairdressers do it all the time and make it look so easy,

0:21:360:21:39

and it's not very easy at all.

0:21:390:21:41

The trick to cutting perfectly at elevation is to create tension.

0:21:420:21:47

It's all about the collaboration between the comb and the scissors,

0:21:470:21:51

knowing that once you reach the right position of your section,

0:21:510:21:54

you hold it tight, it's locked, nothing is moving.

0:21:540:21:57

And then you can cut into the movement.

0:21:570:22:00

As soon as you go to reach for something else,

0:22:030:22:06

that section's going to move, tension's not the same,

0:22:060:22:10

the angle's changed.

0:22:100:22:11

We are talking precise technique.

0:22:110:22:13

It's going to be really difficult for them to achieve that.

0:22:130:22:15

I have no idea.

0:22:170:22:18

Basically, the whole thing is not right.

0:22:190:22:23

Take this bit from underneath, it should get to that, but it doesn't.

0:22:230:22:27

So I've done it wrong.

0:22:270:22:29

-Hour and a bit left.

-Oh, God.

0:22:290:22:31

-How's it going?

-Badly.

0:22:310:22:33

-I've done it wrong.

-What have you done wrong?

-Typical mistake.

0:22:330:22:37

I've done it at the wrong angle,

0:22:370:22:39

so it's not got the layering effect.

0:22:390:22:42

I've done it more sort of...

0:22:420:22:44

Ah.

0:22:440:22:46

The only other way to do it would be just to cut it shorter,

0:22:460:22:49

but I can't cut it shorter.

0:22:490:22:51

Relax, deep breaths, OK.

0:22:510:22:52

You'll get your head around, I know you will. It's fine.

0:22:520:22:55

-Hi, Annie. How are you finding this challenge?

-Really difficult.

0:22:570:22:59

Really difficult. Have you layered hair before at all?

0:22:590:23:02

I'm going up, and then I'm slightly bringing it to the angle,

0:23:020:23:05

and then I've nearly cut my finger, so I kind of rectified it.

0:23:050:23:09

Well, you're a nurse, you can deal with a cut.

0:23:090:23:11

I can cope with that.

0:23:110:23:12

Once the stylists are happy with the symmetry of their cut,

0:23:120:23:16

they must set the hair.

0:23:160:23:18

I've finished with the cut,

0:23:190:23:20

and I've checked it, and it's to my satisfaction.

0:23:200:23:22

I'm going to start putting the rollers in,

0:23:220:23:24

because I would hate for it not to dry and set.

0:23:240:23:26

I'm setting behind the rollers now.

0:23:280:23:29

Do I have enough time, I'm not quite sure?

0:23:290:23:31

Because I don't know how long it's going to take to put underneath.

0:23:310:23:34

I hope it's quite strong.

0:23:340:23:35

-This is very important, that when you set the hair in rollers, you create volume and bounce.

-OK.

0:23:370:23:41

One of the pitfalls with rollers is that

0:23:410:23:43

if you don't get the ends in,

0:23:430:23:45

you create a thing called a fishhook end,

0:23:450:23:48

which completely ruins the finish.

0:23:480:23:50

Very important to get that tail comb and tuck them in, smooth them,

0:23:500:23:55

hold them to your fingers, and then just guide them round, nice

0:23:550:23:59

-and slowly, and then you just shake the roller.

-A little shimmy.

0:23:590:24:03

Shimmy, shimmy, shimmy.

0:24:030:24:05

Even the tension, and we put the clip in.

0:24:050:24:07

I'm hoping I can hide the dodgy cut with the rollers.

0:24:150:24:17

As long as I can get the set looking right, I might get away with the cut.

0:24:170:24:20

Timing is key to achieving the perfect set.

0:24:230:24:26

How does this work?

0:24:260:24:28

The stylists should allow at least 35 minutes for the hair

0:24:300:24:33

to dry completely, and another 10 for it to cool down.

0:24:330:24:37

Oop!

0:24:370:24:38

I'm the first one under the dryer,

0:24:410:24:43

and I'm happy that I managed to get my rollers in on time.

0:24:430:24:46

They weren't the neatest, but with the time that we've got left,

0:24:460:24:49

I just need to get it dry.

0:24:490:24:50

It's not about precision at the moment,

0:24:500:24:52

it's just about getting it dry so I can get the finished look.

0:24:520:24:55

The way a wet set works is heat.

0:24:550:24:57

You have very wet hair, and it's dried at high heat.

0:24:570:25:00

The wetness softens the hair, the heat dries it into the mould,

0:25:000:25:05

and the coolness sets it.

0:25:050:25:07

With only 45 minutes to go,

0:25:080:25:11

Laura has yet to get her blockhead under the dryer.

0:25:110:25:14

I'm totally crumbling.

0:25:160:25:17

I think the pressure of trying to get the haircut done,

0:25:170:25:20

I've just like, I didn't count the rollers, so, I've kind of started

0:25:200:25:25

with a pattern and I'm still going with the pattern, but I think I'll

0:25:250:25:29

just put myself under an immense amount of pressure, because it's

0:25:290:25:32

something I do all the time and I'm really worried that it's not right.

0:25:320:25:35

Oh, my gosh, that was far too much pressure for me. Seriously.

0:25:440:25:48

Literally, that completely threw me.

0:25:480:25:50

-How's it going?

-It's cooking. That's enough.

0:25:520:25:56

I can't believe actual human beings put their head in these things.

0:25:560:25:59

Yeah, I did that once, but with metal rollers.

0:25:590:26:01

It wasn't a good idea.

0:26:010:26:03

Nuclear hot on your head.

0:26:030:26:05

Yeah, a bit. And your make-up melts.

0:26:050:26:07

She's fine. She doesn't complain.

0:26:070:26:09

Looking relaxed.

0:26:090:26:10

How long is it going to be in here for?

0:26:100:26:12

20 minutes before it's finished, I will switch to the really

0:26:120:26:16

cold temperature to cool it down for five minutes.

0:26:160:26:18

-Is that the secret?

-Yes!

0:26:180:26:20

-Cool it down?

-Has to cool down.

0:26:200:26:21

-Have you told anybody else that?

-No.

-Great.

0:26:210:26:24

30 minutes left, everyone, by the way. 30 minutes.

0:26:240:26:27

Just checking that it's all dry

0:26:310:26:33

and there's no wet patches, because with roller sets, there likes

0:26:330:26:38

to be that sneaky little wet patch that will flop your whole style.

0:26:380:26:41

For the curls to hold their shape, the rollers must be allowed

0:26:410:26:45

to completely cool down before being removed.

0:26:450:26:48

10 minutes!

0:26:480:26:50

Is that going to be enough, Laura?

0:26:500:26:52

Yeah, no, it will be fine.

0:26:520:26:54

Still a little bit wet.

0:26:540:26:56

-Well, blow on it.

-Come on then.

0:26:560:26:58

Come and blow on it for me.

0:26:580:27:00

Just trying to style it out now.

0:27:060:27:08

But I'm not sure what to do, to be honest with you.

0:27:080:27:12

I'm not too far off.

0:27:150:27:16

If I say so myself, I think I've done all right.

0:27:160:27:19

I like the curls I've created, and I was a bit worried that I dried

0:27:190:27:22

it too much, but it's kind of softened up as I've pulled it out.

0:27:220:27:26

It's still a little bit wet on one side,

0:27:290:27:31

just really disappointed in myself.

0:27:310:27:33

It's like my mum.

0:27:340:27:37

That's it, guys. Time's up.

0:27:410:27:42

Thank you very much.

0:27:420:27:44

Annie, step back!

0:27:450:27:46

The judges will be assessing the quality of the curls,

0:27:480:27:51

and the bounce of the set, and the symmetry and shape of the haircut.

0:27:510:27:55

Let's go to Ebuni first.

0:27:550:27:56

Ooh! It's fallen out of it at the back, the curl.

0:28:040:28:08

It dried really, really hard, so I tried to pull it out to make

0:28:080:28:11

it look a bit more, but I think I overdid it a little bit.

0:28:110:28:14

You overpulled it.

0:28:140:28:15

-You stretched it out while it was still actually quite hot.

-OK.

0:28:150:28:18

So in fact when you took the rollers out,

0:28:180:28:20

-you should have waited a little bit longer.

-OK.

0:28:200:28:22

What are you doing now?

0:28:250:28:27

I'm going to wet their hair down to check for precision.

0:28:270:28:31

Two hours it took to do that, and he's destroyed it.

0:28:310:28:33

-Yeah, he's destroyed it, yeah.

-30 seconds.

0:28:330:28:36

Would you do this to a client?

0:28:360:28:37

I don't have to check for a client, I know that it's good.

0:28:370:28:41

-Because it will be perfect, because it's a Pichon.

-Oui!

0:28:410:28:44

The balance is pretty good.

0:28:460:28:47

The hair comes to the same length at the front.

0:28:470:28:50

Let me check the top layers.

0:28:500:28:52

You can see you've missed that, quite a few bits there. All right?

0:28:550:28:58

It's a little bit straight on the edges,

0:29:060:29:08

it's almost like it didn't dry.

0:29:080:29:10

The minute I do that, and actually feel it,

0:29:100:29:13

actually a good set in there.

0:29:130:29:15

Yeah, the only thing about the cut is that you have lost the whole

0:29:150:29:18

length of the sides.

0:29:180:29:19

It's just your angle.

0:29:190:29:21

Just change your angle to keep that length.

0:29:210:29:24

So, good cut, yes or no?

0:29:240:29:26

Well, not sufficient, really, for what we were asking.

0:29:260:29:29

Well, straightaway, I can see some fishhook ends.

0:29:350:29:37

You can see that's crinkled on the end.

0:29:370:29:39

So that's where it caught, but it's looking a little bit lopsided.

0:29:390:29:43

Maybe if we shake it up a little bit and move it.

0:29:430:29:45

You see, you haven't exposed these. Look at that.

0:29:460:29:49

-It was in there hiding.

-Your lines are clean, it's a clean job.

0:29:490:29:54

So it's not a bad effort.

0:29:540:29:56

-Oh, dear. It didn't dry, did it?

-No.

-And it's completely straight hair.

0:30:010:30:06

Overall, the set just didn't work.

0:30:060:30:10

-It's mainly the front that you left too long.

-OK.

0:30:120:30:15

-And made you not cut enough on the angles.

-Sure.

0:30:150:30:18

Let's dissect it, Denise and Alain.

0:30:240:30:26

I like the effect that you built into the curl. Beautiful texture.

0:30:260:30:30

But it's fairly even and the distribution works really well.

0:30:300:30:34

It's got a fabulous bounce. Let's feel the weight line here.

0:30:340:30:37

Very good.

0:30:370:30:38

-Her actual shape is there.

-So, what is the overall verdict?

0:30:400:30:46

-Yeah, really good.

-Really good, very good.

-Cool, thank you.

0:30:460:30:50

Katie, don't look so disappointed!

0:30:550:30:57

The top section was great, you got a nice height in it,

0:30:570:30:59

but you pulled it down at the back, which has caused you to collapse

0:30:590:31:02

-a little bit and lose your shape.

-Mm-hmm.

0:31:020:31:04

Your length in the front is good, you know.

0:31:060:31:09

Your angle is pretty good, OK?

0:31:090:31:12

-She's definitely wild.

-I know!

-Yeah. You've got a nice bend in there.

0:31:170:31:21

Just lost it on the height here, and it's completely flat,

0:31:210:31:25

-so it's just lost the bounce.

-The angle is not strong enough.

0:31:250:31:32

And you didn't cut enough, I'm afraid.

0:31:320:31:34

The judges must now rank the stylists for their efforts,

0:31:340:31:38

from top to bottom.

0:31:380:31:39

-This line is not good enough, should have been stronger.

-Yeah.

0:31:390:31:43

You've got to think, we're amateurs at the end of the day, it's not going to be perfect.

0:31:430:31:46

And the haircut here, look, we've got a whole big chunk that looks like it's been bitten.

0:31:460:31:50

I've no idea where I'm going to be, top or bottom, anywhere, nothing!

0:31:500:31:55

No idea.

0:31:550:31:56

The higher the stylist is ranked,

0:31:560:31:57

the greater their choice of hair for the next round.

0:31:570:32:00

I think I am worried about the ranking, yeah,

0:32:000:32:03

it's going to determine what happens tomorrow, so hopefully, I'm

0:32:030:32:06

maybe somewhere in the middle, where I can still have a selection of

0:32:060:32:09

hair types.

0:32:090:32:11

-OK, we know now.

-Sorted.

-OK, we know which one it is.

0:32:110:32:14

The judges have reached a decision.

0:32:140:32:18

In bottom place this week is...

0:32:180:32:22

..Laura.

0:32:260:32:27

Yup, I was expecting that.

0:32:270:32:29

In sixth place this week is...

0:32:290:32:33

..Annie.

0:32:350:32:38

'Kobi is fifth, Ebuni fourth and Katie third.'

0:32:380:32:42

-Pleasantly surprised?

-Shocked!

-Yeah?

0:32:440:32:47

Obviously, it's between Marvin and Dominika.

0:32:480:32:54

First place is...

0:32:570:33:00

-Dominika. Congratulations. Well-deserved.

-Thank you!

0:33:000:33:04

-Fabulous work.

-Oh, so glad!

0:33:040:33:07

'So, Dominika will have her pick of the hair for tomorrow's

0:33:070:33:10

'freestyle challenge.'

0:33:100:33:11

I can reveal that tomorrow's freestyle challenge is...

0:33:110:33:16

..making hats out of hair.

0:33:170:33:19

-Wicked!

-You will be making hats out of hair, competitively, tomorrow.

0:33:190:33:24

So, let's make our way to the board here.

0:33:240:33:27

-Is one a man?

-Is one a man? There is, he's a guy, look.

0:33:310:33:36

Dominika, you came first in the blockhead challenge.

0:33:360:33:38

-I'm going to go for D.

-Yup.

0:33:380:33:41

Brown hair, very long, medium thick, yeah, should be good to work with.

0:33:430:33:48

Laura, you got the guy. I think it's a good thing, it's exciting!

0:33:480:33:54

I'm not sure what he's going to look like with a hat on his head,

0:33:540:33:57

-but we'll give it a go.

-I can't wait to find out. Have a good night, OK?

0:33:570:34:01

I'll see you tomorrow.

0:34:010:34:02

-So, big day yesterday. Who shone for you?

-Dominika, for me.

0:34:070:34:12

-She is a talent, isn't she?

-She is, because she plans what she is doing,

0:34:120:34:15

she thinks it out and she is very together.

0:34:150:34:17

Who is struggling a little bit?

0:34:170:34:19

Laura, yesterday, wasn't very happy with herself, even the setting,

0:34:190:34:23

-the finish of it.

-Annie is struggling a little bit.

0:34:230:34:25

She was weak in the cutting and setting.

0:34:250:34:28

-Overall, I'm worried for Annie.

-Good morning, good morning!

0:34:280:34:31

-ALL:

-Morning!

0:34:310:34:33

It's the big one! The challenge is to make hats out of hair.

0:34:330:34:37

My advice is, make sure that you use the model's real hair

0:34:370:34:41

within your look.

0:34:410:34:43

The hat by itself has to have a defined shape

0:34:430:34:46

and also a very beautiful finish.

0:34:460:34:48

So, remember the brief, because we will be judging on that.

0:34:480:34:52

So, Fez, Fedora, Porkpie, do what you've got to do.

0:34:520:34:58

But remember, make it extraordinary.

0:34:580:35:00

Time to work your magic, you have three hours, the clock starts now.

0:35:000:35:05

Off you go! Good luck!

0:35:050:35:06

Hi, I'm Annie.

0:35:070:35:09

I'm Dominika.

0:35:090:35:11

So, I've never worked with a guy with long hair,

0:35:110:35:13

but I'll treat it as I would anything else.

0:35:130:35:15

The pressure is on, because at the end of this round,

0:35:150:35:17

the judges will be sending someone home.

0:35:170:35:20

Lovely thick hair, haven't you?

0:35:200:35:22

As well as using hair extensions, the stylists can use

0:35:220:35:26

any of the other materials available in the prep room.

0:35:260:35:29

Is that a thing?

0:35:310:35:32

I've never heard of that before, making a hat out of hair, this is new to me.

0:35:320:35:35

It can't be new to you, you're a model, you see models on the

0:35:350:35:38

catwalk, with incredible creations that look like hats, and they're hair.

0:35:380:35:42

Are we doing more towards weird, or just well crafted?

0:35:420:35:45

Whatever shape they are going to create, it has to be beautiful,

0:35:450:35:48

as far as the height, the element of texture, the element of shine.

0:35:480:35:53

The most important thing is we don't want to see two hours in that

0:35:530:35:56

preparation room making steel frames and things like that, that they

0:35:560:35:59

just come out and plonk on the head. They have to work the hair.

0:35:590:36:03

My plan is to create a character,

0:36:080:36:10

so I'm going to think Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, I love the film

0:36:100:36:15

Sweeney Todd, it's going to be sort of like a demon barber,

0:36:150:36:18

but he's going to be a tailor.

0:36:180:36:20

Annie, what's the plan? Tell me.

0:36:200:36:23

I'm looking for a Russian style hat,

0:36:230:36:26

but, like, the Nicole Scherzinger style.

0:36:260:36:28

-Lady's hat, good, she is a lady.

-She is a lady!

-That works a lot better.

0:36:280:36:33

-Have you worked with this hair type?

-Never.

0:36:330:36:35

So, you know what you can and cannot do when it's been relaxed chemically?

0:36:350:36:39

Don't really know much about it, but I'm learning as I'm going along.

0:36:390:36:43

That's what it's all about.

0:36:430:36:45

I think the texture is going to work really well with the hat,

0:36:450:36:48

I think it's going to hold it really well.

0:36:480:36:51

Annie won't be using any props or frame in her Russian hat.

0:36:510:36:55

Instead, she plans to create a fur effect using a difficult

0:36:550:36:59

technique called rickracking.

0:36:590:37:02

This technique involves using these pins here.

0:37:030:37:06

Hold it in quite tight to the hair. Then, you just braid it through.

0:37:060:37:11

Figure of eight.

0:37:110:37:12

The pinned hair is then heated with a straightener

0:37:120:37:16

and once taken out will be tightly curled in zigzags.

0:37:160:37:19

When we take them out, it looks really cool.

0:37:220:37:24

I'm making the rim of my hat,

0:37:290:37:32

so it's going to literally sit on her head, like that.

0:37:320:37:34

Just kind of cover the edges and make it so it doesn't stab her head.

0:37:340:37:37

Which is always a good thing!

0:37:370:37:39

Katie is taking inspiration from Alice in Wonderland.

0:37:390:37:43

-What's the plan, what is the design of the hat?

-The Mad Hatter's hat.

0:37:430:37:48

-So, how are you going to make it?

-I'm going to use...

0:37:480:37:51

I've made my rim, which is this bit. Which goes onto the plait.

0:37:510:37:54

Then the model's hair is going to be making up the rim.

0:37:540:37:57

-Incredible hair, isn't it?

-Beautiful.

-Were you happy with your choice?

0:37:570:38:00

Yeah. 100% grey, virgin hair. I like this colour myself!

0:38:000:38:04

It's not actually grey hair, it's white hair.

0:38:040:38:07

Each single hair has lost its pigmentation

0:38:070:38:10

and that's how it becomes white.

0:38:100:38:12

-Right, OK.

-I'm very excited to see the result.

0:38:120:38:14

The overall plan is to have, like, an amazing fascinator,

0:38:160:38:19

turning hair into, like, feathers and nice spiky things.

0:38:190:38:25

So, quite effective, hopefully it's going to work!

0:38:250:38:28

Dominika will be making a feather topped fascinator by interweaving

0:38:300:38:34

-red and burgundy extensions with the model's own hair.

-Beautiful hair.

0:38:340:38:39

And it's a great length.

0:38:390:38:41

How are you going to deal with that amount of length?

0:38:410:38:43

I'm going to be going for a very high ponytail,

0:38:430:38:46

with a bit of wire in the middle to make it bulky,

0:38:460:38:49

and from there, it will go kind of like feathers.

0:38:490:38:53

What are you doing?

0:38:550:38:57

It looks like you're attaching hair to a piece of cardboard!

0:38:570:39:00

Yes, this is the brim of my hat,

0:39:000:39:01

it's going to start dark at the base, then lighter at the ends.

0:39:010:39:05

-Oh, OK.

-Kind of like the Mad Hatter goes to Miami.

-Wow.

0:39:050:39:09

-Where did Miami come from?

-The big floppy part on the sun hat.

0:39:090:39:12

Beautiful.

0:39:120:39:14

Well, that's an interesting mind you have there, Marvin!

0:39:140:39:17

-So, you've started already?

-Yes, starting.

0:39:180:39:21

Have you got a strong look in mind?

0:39:210:39:23

-Yes, my idea is going to be a big, big button.

-Big button?

0:39:230:39:27

So, are you going to integrate some of the model's hair?

0:39:270:39:30

Yes, this bit here will be coming through the four holes,

0:39:300:39:33

actually joining the button onto the hat.

0:39:330:39:36

Kobi will be making his button out of florist's foam,

0:39:360:39:40

wrapped in hair extensions.

0:39:400:39:42

-KOBI GASPS

-A button!

0:39:450:39:47

-Same as me!

-Is it?

-Yup.

0:39:470:39:50

-What are you doing with yours?

-Covering it in hair.

0:39:500:39:53

-Are you doing that?

-Yeah.

0:39:530:39:54

Basically, I just saw Laura's, she's doing a button also.

0:39:570:40:02

So, I'm just going to have to make sure that when I do mine,

0:40:020:40:07

it's better!

0:40:070:40:08

Oh, no! Oh, no! It's fine, it's fine, it's fine.

0:40:090:40:14

-Cool, thank you.

-Ebuni is taking her inspiration from a children's book.

0:40:150:40:20

I'm making a Cat In The Hat top hat.

0:40:200:40:23

What I'm going to do is use the top half of her head to create a

0:40:230:40:27

cane row for my structure to sit on, so hopefully it's nice and secure.

0:40:270:40:30

Then the back, I'm going to backcomb it, to get all of that

0:40:300:40:33

volume and shape, to hopefully make her a little bit more catlike.

0:40:330:40:37

And how are you finding this hair texture?

0:40:410:40:42

Because it's quite curly and...

0:40:420:40:45

Yeah, so I'm just using the small crimpers to put in some texture.

0:40:450:40:48

-So, you're turning European hair into...

-Afro-Caribbean, kind of.

0:40:480:40:52

-Absolutely.

-I'm just trying to make it a bit more obedient.

0:40:520:40:55

-So it works well.

-Yes.

0:40:550:40:58

As well as crimping the hair, Marvin is adding hair extensions

0:41:000:41:03

and backcombing the whole lot into a beehive,

0:41:030:41:07

which will form the top of his sun hat.

0:41:070:41:10

In this challenge,

0:41:100:41:11

it's very important that you put the model's real hair into the hat.

0:41:110:41:15

It has to be in that structure, somewhere.

0:41:150:41:17

It can't just be a fake head of hair, moulded onto a hat

0:41:170:41:20

and plonked on top of the head.

0:41:200:41:22

Katie is making the top of her hat by covering chicken wire

0:41:220:41:26

in black, grey and white synthetic extensions.

0:41:260:41:30

Mine is looking slightly Halloween!

0:41:300:41:33

-THEY LAUGH

-It's OK, it's OK.

0:41:330:41:36

Pfft!

0:41:360:41:38

Dominika is working on the centre of her fascinator.

0:41:380:41:41

I backcomb it, then I put the wire,

0:41:410:41:44

then I wrap the wire with elastic, tight.

0:41:440:41:48

So then, I put the plait around it, and I should secure it,

0:41:480:41:51

it should be fine.

0:41:510:41:53

The fascinator will be topped with feathers made

0:41:530:41:55

-out of the model's natural hair.

-So, I used a very strong hairspray.

0:41:550:42:00

And then, with straighteners, I just slowly smooth it across,

0:42:000:42:05

so when it gets heated, it just seals together.

0:42:050:42:09

And then, you kind of have this plastic effect.

0:42:090:42:12

Oh, wow!

0:42:180:42:19

That looks so cool.

0:42:210:42:22

Having finished rickracking the model's hair,

0:42:220:42:25

Annie brushes it with a stiff natural bristle brush to

0:42:250:42:28

create a texture that resembles fur for her Russian hat.

0:42:280:42:31

She then moulds and pins it into shape.

0:42:310:42:34

So, I'm just going to put a few extensions in at the back.

0:42:340:42:38

So, this is supposed to look like her actual hair underneath the hat.

0:42:380:42:43

Just trying to fix it in as best I can.

0:42:430:42:48

Katie is using the model's natural hair to form the brim of her hat.

0:42:480:42:53

I've got to get this right, dress the curls and get the hat on,

0:42:540:42:58

which is looking a bit Herman Munster-esque!

0:42:580:43:01

-I'm a bit worried about that bit.

-SHE LAUGHS

0:43:010:43:04

Sorry if I gouge your head, let me know!

0:43:060:43:08

Come on, come on, come on!

0:43:100:43:12

Ah!

0:43:140:43:15

It's so not going to the plan, this is so not going to the plan.

0:43:150:43:20

Dominika is using hair extensions, hairspray

0:43:200:43:22

and foil moulds to try to give her fascinator a felted look.

0:43:220:43:26

I'm just worried that I'm running behind the time.

0:43:280:43:31

-I'm late.

-What's going on?

-It wasn't drying.

0:43:310:43:35

I put the foil on top of it, to get the sharp shape,

0:43:350:43:38

and I thought it was going to dry underneath, the hairspray.

0:43:380:43:40

It didn't dry. So... Yeah.

0:43:400:43:43

It's kind of weird, seeing things not go according to plan for you.

0:43:430:43:47

We'll see.

0:43:480:43:49

The clock is ticking. 20 minutes left, guys. Get it done!

0:43:510:43:56

I'm going to change it, because it's not as clean as I wanted it to be.

0:43:570:44:01

I think it looks like someone has stabbed a needle

0:44:010:44:03

through his head, so I'm going to make it look a bit bloody!

0:44:030:44:06

Both Laura and Katie are using

0:44:080:44:10

temporary coloured sprays on their hats.

0:44:100:44:13

I'm hopefully spraying a pattern onto the hair. Wish me luck!

0:44:140:44:19

Let's see what we've got.

0:44:240:44:26

It's too big!

0:44:260:44:28

Marvin has miscalculated the size of the hole at the centre of his brim.

0:44:280:44:33

Back in a second. The model's hat is just a little bit too big.

0:44:330:44:38

So, I'm going to make an extra layer to go underneath the actual

0:44:380:44:44

base of the hat.

0:44:440:44:47

It's even better now.

0:44:490:44:50

-Hey, how are you doing?

-Hi.

-Whoa!

0:45:070:45:11

Can I ask you, where is the model's own hair, within this?

0:45:110:45:15

OK, so I did a braid at the top of the head,

0:45:150:45:18

and that's what it's sitting on. So, it's secured to that.

0:45:180:45:21

-Then her hair is all this around the side, as well.

-OK.

0:45:210:45:24

-So, have you put any of her hair into this hat?

-Not into the hat.

0:45:240:45:28

Not into the hat.

0:45:280:45:29

I don't know if they didn't like it,

0:45:290:45:32

I felt like they wanted your hair in the hat.

0:45:320:45:34

Oh, well, nothing I can do now. Well, there is another person who has done a similar kind of hat,

0:45:340:45:38

and theirs doesn't look like... I don't know.

0:45:380:45:41

Annie? Annie? Is any of her hair in that, or is it just...

0:45:410:45:45

-That's her hair.

-This is her hair?

-Yeah.

-Oh, wow.

0:45:450:45:48

Three minutes left, guys.

0:45:500:45:53

That's 180 seconds left!

0:45:530:45:56

Well, I don't really have any more extensions, but what can I do?

0:46:000:46:03

It is what it is, I'm just going to have to deal with whatever they have to say.

0:46:050:46:09

And time's up!

0:46:130:46:16

Step away from your models, please.

0:46:160:46:19

You're done.

0:46:200:46:23

Please wait patiently, judgment is coming!

0:46:230:46:27

Question, and my favourite one - does it wobble when it walks?

0:46:380:46:42

'Denise and Alain will be looking to see if the designs fit

0:46:440:46:47

'the freestyle brief, and if they stand up to 360-degree scrutiny.'

0:46:470:46:53

It could do...

0:46:540:46:56

Force eight gale, this is definitely a Cossack Princess that could

0:46:560:46:59

go right into the snow, and this is definitely a hat.

0:46:590:47:02

And I can feel fur,

0:47:020:47:03

so I think the rickrack technique was the perfect thing to do.

0:47:030:47:08

I like it very much, beautiful shape, it's a Cossack hat, you can

0:47:080:47:12

see the inspiration, you know, this is what it's all about,

0:47:120:47:15

this is what we asked for and you delivered it.

0:47:150:47:18

It flows, the whole thing flows.

0:47:180:47:19

You've got the real hair, you've got the fake hair coming through,

0:47:190:47:24

in fact, I felt that the fake hair was the real hair.

0:47:240:47:27

-So there is a complete flow, it's completely...

-It's fantastic.

0:47:270:47:30

-Is that a wobble? Am I seeing a wobble?

-No, that's a flow!

0:47:400:47:43

What's the difference?

0:47:430:47:44

-A wobble is insecure, and a flow is the flow of the hat.

-OK.

0:47:440:47:48

Love the size, love the proportions, you have utilised the hair.

0:47:480:47:52

There is an element of My Fair Lady in there.

0:47:520:47:55

But the only thing is, the finish underneath,

0:47:550:47:58

because underneath the hat is very important,

0:47:580:48:00

and underneath here, I can see the cardboard.

0:48:000:48:03

So overall, the finish is a little bit untidy.

0:48:030:48:07

Yeah, it's not defined,

0:48:070:48:09

it's not refined as much as we'd like to see, you know?

0:48:090:48:12

-So, the big question, is it a hat?

-Is it a hat?

0:48:220:48:27

It's on the edge of it.

0:48:270:48:28

I would define it as a big doughnut as much as a hat.

0:48:280:48:33

It is on the edge of being a hat, but you have used the model's

0:48:330:48:36

own hair, incorporated that into the design,

0:48:360:48:38

which carries all the way through the back, so the continuity is good.

0:48:380:48:42

The two flow into each other.

0:48:420:48:43

Is it exactly what we want? We will have to debate about it.

0:48:430:48:47

I can't see the model's own hair through this hat.

0:49:010:49:04

You could have incorporated this beautiful hair through this, but you've had this fabulous hair

0:49:040:49:09

and you've literally just rolled it up.

0:49:090:49:12

I tried to backcomb it, but I wasn't really strong with it.

0:49:120:49:16

It looks like you've just hidden it.

0:49:160:49:17

It is a hat, but the model's own hair is not in that hat.

0:49:170:49:22

That's right.

0:49:220:49:23

-Fascinator.

-This is a fascinator. This is absolutely a fascinator.

0:49:360:49:39

-Which is a kind of hat.

-Which is a hat as well.

0:49:390:49:41

If you've never seen one made out of hair, this is it.

0:49:410:49:43

The technique was really well applied, well done.

0:49:430:49:46

I'm not sure myself if I would have cut it at the base,

0:49:460:49:49

I know you wanted to feel it properly.

0:49:490:49:51

It would have been nice to see it a little bigger,

0:49:510:49:55

a little bit more shape, because this is gorgeous to see.

0:49:550:49:58

The finish is absolutely beautiful.

0:49:580:50:00

-You incorporate hat and hair all in one flow.

-Very defined.

0:50:000:50:04

I can't see pins, I can't fault it.

0:50:040:50:06

-I will take them away while the going's good!

-Thank you.

0:50:060:50:09

-She could definitely go to the tea party!

-I love it.

0:50:250:50:29

I love the finish, the fact that you have two different textures,

0:50:290:50:32

curly and the hat over the top, I love the rim, the way you have

0:50:320:50:37

utilised her own hair into it, it's very regular, you just have to

0:50:370:50:41

define it a little touch to make a perfect roundness, but very little.

0:50:410:50:46

And then, you've put the top, the top is incredible,

0:50:460:50:49

because of the colour, because of the texture, and I love the stencils.

0:50:490:50:52

This is one of the best,

0:50:520:50:54

if not the best Mad Hatter made out of hair that I have ever seen.

0:50:540:50:58

Where does this lady end and the crazy begin?

0:50:580:51:01

-No visible signs of it being secured.

-Where is the join?

0:51:010:51:04

She's done it so beautifully, you can't see the join.

0:51:040:51:07

-OK, there is one pin.

-I knew you were going to get that!

-She got it.

0:51:070:51:11

-Did you see it?

-No!

0:51:110:51:13

Can I just say, there is only one other person in the room that that hat would suit.

0:51:130:51:17

-This guy, right here. We were all thinking it, come on!

-Absolutely.

0:51:170:51:20

Come on, I've got to try it on... Not today!

0:51:200:51:23

-Really watch... watch your eyes, Denise!

-Yes.

0:51:410:51:45

-I am struggling to see hat.

-OK.

0:51:450:51:48

So, I was going more fascinator than hat.

0:51:480:51:51

Yeah, a fascinator for a man would be difficult to accept,

0:51:510:51:54

-to a certain degree.

-It's supposed to be a needle in a button.

0:51:540:51:57

It's a needle in a button? OK.

0:51:570:51:59

It's more like a scaffolding pole fell from the sky,

0:51:590:52:02

went right through a Polo mint and just caught you!

0:52:020:52:04

-Why didn't you put it here?

-I think it's just the placing...

0:52:040:52:08

Because if I was to move it...

0:52:080:52:10

I mean, it's very solidly done, but if I were to move this...

0:52:100:52:13

-Don't listen to the crack! In actual fact...

-I think that was his skull!

0:52:130:52:16

In fact, there is a cleaner shape there, so in actual fact,

0:52:160:52:20

you could create a great shape here, it's still a bit too feminine.

0:52:200:52:23

OK.

0:52:230:52:25

OK, guys, you know what comes next.

0:52:250:52:28

It's the tough bit, the judges are going to put their thinking

0:52:280:52:30

caps on and they are going to decide who has just won the freestyle

0:52:300:52:34

round and who is about to go home.

0:52:340:52:36

So, take five, we'll see you in a bit.

0:52:360:52:39

I really want to stay, like, I'm just loving the experience,

0:52:460:52:50

-so for me to go home, I would be so sad.

-I don't know if it was good.

0:52:500:52:55

I think it was to a high standard, but if it wasn't a hat,

0:52:550:53:00

it didn't fit the brief, so, technically, I could be going home.

0:53:000:53:04

I don't feel safe at all, actually, and I don't think they got it,

0:53:040:53:08

I don't think they were in the world that I was in.

0:53:080:53:10

So, a bit disappointed, but I don't think they understood.

0:53:100:53:13

So, someone is about to win the freestyle round.

0:53:130:53:17

-Who are the front runners?

-Well, three have really impressed me.

0:53:170:53:21

-Annie, Dominika and Katie.

-Annie has come from nowhere, hasn't she?

0:53:210:53:26

She had a disaster in the blockhead round.

0:53:260:53:28

Annie has really pulled her socks up,

0:53:280:53:30

she has risen to the challenge, and it was beautiful,

0:53:300:53:33

she used a fantastic technique, it was excellent.

0:53:330:53:35

-She really did come from the bottom up.

-But, who is leaving?

0:53:350:53:40

That's what I want to know.

0:53:400:53:41

Well, I would say that Laura is definitely in trouble.

0:53:410:53:45

She was very strong in the first round, in the plaits,

0:53:450:53:48

that was stunning and absolutely beautiful.

0:53:480:53:50

-But on the set, just didn't reach the mark.

-Anybody else?

0:53:500:53:55

Ebuni, definitely, on the last challenge,

0:53:550:53:58

she didn't pull it off, let's face it.

0:53:580:54:00

Also, we believe Marvin, just on the edge,

0:54:000:54:04

it looked good from the top, it could have been a lot more refined.

0:54:040:54:07

He has a problem finishing the hair, I think.

0:54:070:54:10

Clearly, you have some tough decisions to make.

0:54:100:54:12

We have, because to choose the winner is definitely a tough task.

0:54:120:54:15

And to choose the loser, too.

0:54:150:54:17

Let's just say a bunch of tough decisions,

0:54:170:54:20

and we'll leave you to it.

0:54:200:54:22

I'll get out of your hair. Rather you than me!

0:54:220:54:24

So, I think if we've narrowed it to two...

0:54:270:54:29

-The hairdressing element wasn't in there.

-Yup.

0:54:300:54:33

-The haircut wasn't up to shape.

-Yeah.

-Very different.

0:54:350:54:39

You might have made up your mind. I have.

0:54:390:54:42

Well, firstly,

0:54:500:54:51

thank you all so much for your hard work over the last couple of days.

0:54:510:54:55

You really have dazzled us with your creations.

0:54:550:54:59

However, one of you has shone a little brighter than anybody

0:54:590:55:03

else in the freestyle round.

0:55:030:55:05

And that person is...

0:55:050:55:07

..Katie.

0:55:100:55:11

Congratulations.

0:55:110:55:12

-APPLAUSE

-Well-deserved. Fabulous.

0:55:120:55:15

-Happy with that?

-Yup. Very!

-You deserve it, it's fabulous. Fabulous.

0:55:150:55:21

So, that brings me to the yucky bit. The bit where we lose one of you.

0:55:210:55:27

The judges have decided that the person we are losing this

0:55:270:55:30

week is going to be...

0:55:300:55:33

..Ebuni.

0:55:400:55:42

-Sorry, Ebuni.

-It's all right. Thanks, guys. Yeah, I'm good.

0:55:430:55:48

That was the hardest decision, between Ebuni and Laura,

0:55:500:55:54

-it was very difficult.

-Literally, it was a hair between them!

0:55:540:55:59

An absolute hair.

0:55:590:56:00

But the thing with Ebuni was, she didn't listen to what we said,

0:56:000:56:04

saying that you had to incorporate hair into the style.

0:56:040:56:07

I definitely thought I was going home,

0:56:070:56:10

so at least I've got another chance to sort of prove it to myself,

0:56:100:56:13

I think, I definitely want to show the judges I can do it.

0:56:130:56:17

I think I deserved to stay this week, yeah.

0:56:170:56:20

It's good for me, yeah, winning the challenge. Really good!

0:56:200:56:24

I'm disappointed.

0:56:240:56:26

With the hat, I thought, maybe, yeah,

0:56:260:56:28

but I didn't do so bad with the cutting or the braids,

0:56:280:56:30

so I thought that would equal it out, but I'm just a beginner, an

0:56:300:56:34

amateur at this, so I'm proud of myself for making it this far.

0:56:340:56:37

'Next time on Hair...'

0:56:430:56:46

Is it a beehive?

0:56:460:56:47

I can't work under pressure.

0:56:490:56:51

I'm just hacking at it now!

0:56:510:56:53

SHE SQUEALS

0:56:530:56:56

Period drama could be any period in the history of the world.

0:56:560:57:00

I don't know whether the blue is cheapening it, or the blue is making it.

0:57:000:57:03

It could headline a major fashion show.
