-organizers, Cerys Matthews.

-..for The Good Life Experience.

-One of its organizers is the famous

-Welsh singer, Cerys Matthews.

-How did you get involved

-in The Good Life Experience?

-We don't think of you

-and this part of Wales.

-My husband was good friends

-with Charlie Gladstone in the 1980s.

-We bumped into each other at Rough

-Trade Records in Ladbroke Grove.

-Our experience of working in various

-forms in the music business...

-..and promoting,

-which is what my husband does...

-..and the glorious land of Hawarden

-owned by Gladstones...

-..so we had to try

-to organize a festival.

-Tell us what people can expect.

-We want people to have fun and

-for children to try something new.

-We wanted good value, so once you're

-in, you hardly pay for anything.

-They abseil in the trees,

-do axe throwing and archery.

-It's incredible.

-I've been coming here since the

-start and the first year was tiny.

-This is the third year and

-it's much bigger but still intimate.

-There's about 4,000 people

-this year.

-I'm the secretary

-of The Coracle Society.

-We've come to Hawarden

-this weekend...

-..to encourage people onto the river

-and in the lake over there.

-We've got Georgia Ruth and Rhys Mwyn

-is coming back again this year.

-This festival is so colourful

-celebrating Owain Glyndwr Day.

-This morning,

-our cameras visited Carmarthen...

-..for an event

-for local schools.

-Most people associate Owain Glyndwr

-with Corwen or Machynlleth...

-..but what about Llandysul?

-The town can claim its place

-in Owain Glyndwr's story too.

-Many years ago, you had the Princes

-of Deheubarth, Powys or Gwynedd.

-Those were the realms.

-In 1400, Owain Glyndwr was able

-to call himself Prince of Wales.

-The area of Llandysul is important

-in how this came about.

-Owain's mother was the princess

-of a royal family in South Wales.

-It was known as the Deheubarth and

-covered the whole of South Wales.

-The family lost power and their land

-was stolen by the English kings.

-Just prior

-to Owain Glyndwr's days...

-..they only had two commots

-of the old Ceredigion left.

-They were the Llandysul area

-and the region of Atpar.

-But wait a minute, what's a commot?

-The commot was a Medieval system

-from the days of Hywel Dda.

-It was how they organized

-the countries in Wales.

-Ceredigion was traditionally

-a country within Wales.

-Owain inherited the lordship of

-these commots from his mother, Elen.

-This gave him the right to declare

-himself as the Prince of Wales.

-From his father, Gruffydd Fychan, he

-inherited the realm of Powys Fadog.

-He controlled Gwynedd as a

-descendant of Grufudd ap Cynan...

-..and ruled Deheubarth thanks to

-his mother so was Prince of Wales.

-His mother's father, Thomas ap

-Llewelyn set up court in Llandysul.

-This is where his mother was raised

-and Owain could have played here...

-..but where was the court

-in Llandysul?

-In the Medieval era, Llandysul was a

-small settlement around the church.

-There isn't a lot of room

-for a court...

-..other than the current site

-of the Porth Hotel.

-It's the only place that could house

-Owain Glyndwr's court.

-Few people know about this heritage.

-Hardly anybody knows.

-The Dee Valley celebrates its links

-with Owain Glyndwr.

-South Ceredigion has similar links

-but knows nothing of them.

-I want to walk the same ground

-as Elen Ferch Thomas ap Llewelyn...

-Climbing Trees from South Wales were

-part of the BBC Horizons scheme.

-The second stage will be filled

-with local composers.

-Young composers will be part

-of the Yn y Golau project...

-..which supports young composers

-and singers aged between 16 and 21.

-It's the first time Caer Rhun Hall

-has hosted the festival.

-As you can see behind me,

-it's an amazing location.

-We have all kinds of events

-taking place over the weekend.

-There are activities for children

-and circus performers...

-..DJs, plenty of food, drink

-and a whole lot of fun.

-I have just released

-a new English CD, Little Girl.

-It's great that this festival

-highlights singer-songwriters.

-It will allow me to meet people

-from across the world...

-..and maybe to perform

-with them in the future.

-It's an important night

-they leave home for university.

-Over the weekend, the Ironman Wales

-race will take place in Tenby...

-..for the sixth consecutive year.

-It's an event that has earned its

-place as one of the most popular...

-..Ironman races

-on the international calendar.

-Rhodri Gomer has been finding out

-about this tough race...

-..and its importance

-to the local area.

-No-one knew what to expect when

-the Ironman was first held here.

-All they saw were signs

-saying that streets were closed.

-But from the very start,

-people have come out to watch...

-..and these days, hundreds from

-across Wales actually take part.

-Over 2,000 people

-take part every year.

-Some are debutants like me,

-others are more experienced.

-It's a huge event for the area,

-a boost to the economy...

-..and a good way of keeping fit.

-For the athletes, preparations

-begin months before the race.

-For many, the training

-takes over their lives.

-I have invested the whole year.

-After watching last year's race,

-I decided I wanted to take part.

-I started training

-about eight hours a week.

-By August,

-it was more like eighteen.

-The race will start

-from North Beach on Sunday.

-The 2,000 competitors will have had

-a big meal the night before...

-..before getting as much sleep

-as they can.

-They will gather on the beach for

-the first element of the race...

-..a 2.5 mile swim in the sea.

-It really is quite a sight.

-The swim is my biggest worry.

-There are variable tides

-and currents in the water.

-There are 2,000 swimmer around you,

-kicking and playing with your feet.

-It's quite a job.

-After the swim, they race to the top

-of town and the transition zone.

-They'll strip off their swimsuits...

-..before cycling 112 miles around

-the tough roads of Pembrokeshire.

-Feeding the body

-is crucial in these races...

-..in order to keep up

-your energy levels.

-The bike is a good time to do this.

-When I'm on the bike, I'll take on

-70g of carbohydrate every hour.

-I will carry a full bottle

-of water on the bike...

-..mixed with an

-isotonic carbohydrate drink.

-I have another bottle on the bike.

-I will drink that much

-every two hours.

-I will also eat one of these bars

-every hour.

-There are plenty of feed stations

-on this race...

-..so you can stop

-to take on more supplies.

-It's only a shell at the moment,

-but on Sunday...

-..this transition zone

-will be a hive of activity...

-..as the athletes finish...

-..what is known as the toughest

-cycle course on the Ironman circuit.

-But there is one more challenge

-before they will finish the race.

-Trainers on and it's time

-to run a full marathon.

-Many find it hard to run

-after being on a bike.

-The legs will feel a bit like jelly.

-I have never run a marathon so

-Sunday's marathon will be my first.

-Probably the last as well!

-The run will be tough because my

-legs will be asking me to stop.

-My head will be urging me onwards.

-The favourites this year include

-Diane Reisler in the women's race...

-..and Alberto Casadei

-in the men's event.

-The majority will just want to

-finish within the time allowed...

-..whether that's in daylight

-or deep into the night.

-It's all so they can call themselves

-real Ironmen and Ironwomen.
