-has reached Aberystwyth on day two.

-The crowd awaits the challenge

-and to tackle the first stage.

-What is the route for today?

-We head to Ceredigion and start in

-Aberystwyth then head to Tregaron...

-..Lampeter, Aberaeron, New Quay,

-Llandysul and Newcastle Emlyn...

-..before calling it a day at a

-concert in Cardigan Castle tonight.

-What is the aim of the race?

-We aim to nurture confidence in the

-Welsh language and unite everyone...

-..and create grants

-with the funding from sponsors.

-These grants will help fund projects

-or events that promote the language.

-It's vital that we raise our profile

-and football has added to it.

-We want to continue to spread the

-importance of the Welsh language.

-There's quite a distance

-ahead of you.

-Unfortunately,

-I said I'd run the entire county.

-It's wonderful to see the support

-and there's a great atmosphere here.

-Are you looking forward to the race?

-Yes, I really like this race.

-Have you been training?

-No, I haven't.

-Do you speak Welsh every day?

-I don't speak it every day

-but it's very important to me.

-to my home town of Cardigan.

-we're raising the profile of Welsh.

-Yes, it reinforces

-and nurtures confidence.

-It was fun running through towns

-to write for the musical genre.

-This project will last a week.

-The discussions have been

-We've been to The Other Room,

-the Sherman Theatre...

-in Cardiff.

-I've looked at the elements

-of the musical with the cast.

-What is your role Branwen?

-I write dramas for the theatre.

-I've never penned a musical.

-It's great being thrown together...

-..to see all that goes

-into the musical.

-We've got beatboxers...

-..and I've worked with Angharad

-from the band, Calan.

-It's been fantastic.

-What's the situation like for

-theatre in Wales at the moment?

-There's a lot of confidence

-in Welsh musical theatre.

-There's a lot of musicals

-in the Millennium Centre...

-..and I've spoken to programmers

-across Wales...

-..to see why we aren't staging

-more of the smaller musicals.

-I'm looking at musical monologues...

-..with a class in a school

-in Swansea.

-Has this inspired you to write,

-Branwen?

-This has really encouraged me

-to write a musical.

-There's so much talent in Wales.

-I can't wait to work with some

-of the talented people in Wales.

-There's been a lot of things

-to discuss.

-We looked at the I Want song.

-Few people know about that.

-It's been great to work

-with a beatboxer.

-I had a lesson in beatboxing.

-I got to learn what

-we can borrow from each other.

-No challenge is too big for runner

-and Snowdon Race organizer...

-..Stephen Edwards.

-Last year,

-he ran six marathons in six days.

-Tomorrow at 10.00am he embarks upon

-a race with others around Anglesey.

-Before they sprint off, we hear

-more about the Anglesey Challenge.

-The Anglesey Challenge is the second

-challenge I've done in eight months.

-It circumnavigates the island,

-along the coast and rural roads.

-We aim to cover around 110 miles

-over 24 hours without any sleep.

-Stephen asked me six months ago to

-join him on a run around Anglesey.

-I happily obliged.

-He didn't mention the 100 miles,

-but we have trained hard for it.

-Stephen, Alan Owen and myself

-have trained for a 100-mile run.

-This year's challenge

-raises funds for Team Irfon.

-It'll raise awareness of the

-children's cancer charity...

-..called Gafael Llaw at Gwynedd

-and Alder Hey hospitals.

-The Caernarfon crew are trying to

-raise awareness of the challenge.

-This is why Alun and myself

-are sharing it with Team Irfon.

-It also gives another charity

-a chance to get praise and money.

-We've completed a lot of training,

-but it's all about your mentality.

-If you're in the right headspace,

-it'll be an easy run.

-My legs will certainly ache

-but it's all for a good cause.

-We're doing it mainly for

-Gafael Llaw and Team Irfon.

-If you'd like to wish all the best

-start of the Battle of Mametz Wood.

-For Wales, the loss was formidable.

-Nearly 4,000 Welsh soldiers

-perished during the attack.

-Today, a memorial garden

-opened at Caernarfon Castle...

-..to commemorate

-the sacrifice of these soldiers.

-Gerallt has the details.

-..created an incredible atmosphere

-for this event.

-I'm not exaggerating

-when I use the word "incredible."

-Dilwyn Morgan led the ceremony.

-Yes, and there's been

-a really homely atmosphere here...

-..as we mark the centenary

-of the Battle of Mametz Wood.

-North Wales and Caernarfon Castle

-now has a Great War Memorial Garden.

-People can come here to think

-of the dear ones they have lost...

-..as opposed to having to travel

-to London or Cardiff.

-I'm humbled to have played

-a part in this historic event.

-Edmund Bailey, the Lord Lieutenant

-for Gwynedd featured in the service.

-We all have to reflect upon

-the relevance of this day...

-..to mark the centenary

-of the Battle of Mametz Wood.

-Mametz strikes at the core of

-the people of Caernarfon and Wales.

-Many people from North Wales

-joined the army.

-They were either volunteers

-or those who signed up.

-It was important to have something

-in North Wales...

-..to commemorate and pay tribute to

-those who gave their lives for us.

-What will you remember from today?

-I think it has to be the presence

-of so many young people.

-It's important to have those

-with memories of the event...

-..but we should educate the young so

-we can uphold this commemoration...

-..and I hope they learn a lesson

-for the future too.

-Lying under the surface of today's

-event are the personal stories.

-Your family is no exception, Gareth.

-My grandfather, Major Robert Mills

-died in the Battle of Mametz Wood...

-..some 100 years to tomorrow

-which is 10 July.

-I'm here with my brothers

-and our partners to remember him.

-The North Wales Rugby Choir

-often performs in memorial events...

-..and dubbed the choir to remember

-the atrocities of World War I.

-I don't know how it happened but

-we've done a lot in recent years...

-..that cover the four years

-of horrors in the First World War.

-It's an honour to be here to

-remember all the Welsh soldiers...

-..who died in

-the Battle of Mametz Wood.

-It started on this very day

-and lasted for four or five days.

-I'll remember today because it

-has been quite emotional at times...

-..when you think of what happened

-to our young men and women.

-As a symbol of this,

-we will release two pigeons...

-..which are also

-an international symbol of peace.

-The battle and fatalities

-are recorded in Alun Cob's novel.

-The novel is called Mametz

-and is available from Gomer Press.
