-Believe it or not,

-Carmarthen was an unruly town.

-At a new exhibition, you can learn

-more about its criminals.

-Two million have been made.

-They've been used by the

-emergency services and armed forces.

-In Wales, they're recognized

-as the friend of the farmers.

-Yes, it's the Land Rover.

-However, an era is coming to an end

-as the Land Rover Defender retires.

-Tonight, Gerallt has

-the Defender's history for us.

-You're in your Land Rover but

-I can't see any farmers, Gerallt!

-You'll meet its owner later.

-This is the final Defender.

-It's been a loyal member of the

-family for many farmers.

-All sorts of treasures have gone

-under the hammer at Bonhams.

-Just before the Christmas...

-..the last Land Rover Defender

-was sold for 400,000!

-It's the highest priced

-paid for any Land Rover.

-The Land Rover company decided

-to create a large design...

-..on Red Wharf Bay on Anglesey...

-..where engineer, Maurice Wilks had

-the idea to design the Land Rover.

-Everyone has become familiar with

-his contribution to the motor world.

-Maurice Wilks is buried at

-Llanfair-yn-cwmwd on Anglesey.

-It states he was an engineer and

-linked to Rover on his gravestone.

-But there's no mention

-of Land Rover.

-But this error has been rectified

-with a memorial on a school wall.

-Alwyn Jones runs a garage by Dwyran

-and is an admirer of Wilk's vision.

-It's quite apt that a memorial for

-Maurice Wilks is on the school wall.

-It's important that we remember

-Mr Wilks' contribution.

-He devised the Land Rover

-on Red Wharf Bay.

-An image of the original Land Rover

-appear on the board here.

-It was the first model

-to be sold to the public.

-Local farmers

-used them like tractors.

-The Land Rover is hard-working but

-for many it's a pleasure to drive.

-How old is this vehicle, Ken?

-It was manufactured in 1967

-which make it almost 50 years old.

-You're not a farmer

-so why do you need a Land Rover?

-Men at my age want boys toys!

-Many of them buy motorbikes

-and almost kill themselves.

-You're a lot safer driving this.

-Why is the Land Rover

-so important to you?

-In the 1970s, I worked

-in Scotland and Ireland...

-..and this is what I always drove.

-It's now in the blood.

-And once they're in the blood...

-Amen!

-You're a mechanic so you recognize

-that he invented something amazing.

-Yes, he's sold thousands

-of models across the globe.

-The one, two and three series

-were the most relevant models.

-It changed over the Range Rover

-but the early models are the best.

-How many residents

-remember Maurice Wilks?

-A lot of the elderly remember him

-living in the area.

-He would travel around

-and was a lovely gentleman.

-He was quite a hero.

-Yes, he's an hero and his

-vehicles continue to be driven.

-They're a lot more expensive now

-but he started it all.

-Ty'n Llwyfan

-is the name of this farm.

-There are two Land Rovers

-on the farm.

-I'm joined by the famous farmer,

-Gareth Wyn Jones.

-You're the only person

-allowed to drive it.

-This vehicle has worked harder

-than anything else on the farm...

-..except from the wife.

-It's currently on sale

-if you want to buy it.

-It's held together by string.

-The Defender

-is coming to the end of its life.

-Agriculture

-will miss these vehicles.

-Mountain farmers swear by them.

-Do you have a busy year ahead?

-The year 2016

-will be very busy for me.

-I'll be going to the Isle of Man

-in September.

-I will be their celebrity farmer.

-I'll discuss farming

-and sample their beer.

-What about closer to home?

-Closer to home, I'll film

-a new programme for the BBC.

-at Glan Llyn by Welsh musicians.

-The highlight of the programme will

-be a gig at the Urdd Eisteddfod.

-The musicians will be asked

-to compose their own music.

-We'll try to inspire the youngsters.

-We'll take today's bands

-back to their old schools.

-Yr Eira returned to Tryfan.

-Ows Gwynedd, Candelas and many

-more have also participated.

-One of the groups that returned

-to their old school is Swnami.

-I'm Ifan Davies.

-I play the guitar and sing.

-I'm Gerwyn and I'm the bassist.

-I'm Lewis and I play the drums.

-Gruff is missing

-but he plays the synths.

-How did you meet, because only Owain

-attended Ysgol y Gadair school?

-I met Gerwyn when I played saxophone

-in an awful band!

-We went to Coleg Meirion Dwyfor

-where we met Ifan.

-We started staying after college

-every Tuesday to practise.

-You mentioned that the bands

-enjoyed going back to school.

-Yes, the bands had lots of fun

-returning to their old schools.

-The pupils enjoyed

-their performances too.

-It was great to see the band members

-when they were in school.

-You have just started filming and

-for a new exhibition.

-However, they aren't happy pictures.

-There is more than meets the eye

-when you look at these Victorians.

-The market town of Carmarthen

-is home to 15,000 people...

-..and it's thought to be

-the oldest town in Wales.

-Its history

-dates back to Roman times...

-..and it's the birthplace

-of Merlin the wizard.

-It's also famous for its Black Book,

-one of Wales oldest manuscripts...

-..which dates back

-to the 13th century.

-The White Book of Carmarthen was

-recently published to promote peace.

-This is part of the town's

-happy and respectable history...

-..but believe it or not, it used to

-be the most unruly town in the UK.

-At Carmarthenshire's Archive,

-there's another incredible book.

-The Felons Register makes for some

-very interesting reading.

-It's one of the most important items

-at the Carmarthen Archive.

-It shows the history of felons

-during the Victorian era.

-It describes what happens and there

-are also photographs of the charged.

-These were some of the first

-photographs ever taken of felons.

-The first mug shots were captured

-here in Carmarthen.

-What kind of offences

-did they commit?

-Ann Phillips was charged for

-attempting to poison her husband.

-The youngest criminal in the book

-is Mary Thomas, aged just nine.

-She was sentenced for arson.

-It's thought that the jailer had a

-great interest in early photography.

-The photographs and stories

-within this special register...

-..have inspired a new exhibition

-at the Myrddin Gallery.

-The show is called Notorious.

-Anthony Rhys has used characters

-from the Felons Register...

-..and created portraits of them.

-A variety of the era's crimes

-can be seen at the gallery.

-There are thieves, a minister

-who hits someone over the head...

-..and a husband and wife

-who attack each other.

-Some portraits are sad

-whilst others are more humorous.

-They all reflect the era

-and the troubles in Carmarthenshire.

-You could spend hours looking at the

-images and reading about the crimes.

-This one grabbed my attention.

-This drunk policeman left his keys

-inside a cell with a prisoner!

-These pieces are based on the badges

-that were worn by prisoners.

-The artist has painted portraits

-of the characters from the register.

-They look like they're screaming

-and calling out for help.

-It shows the terrible situations

-that these people are in.

-The artist has used

-real-life stories...

-..but he's portrayed people he knows

-like friends and family.

-There's even a self-portrait

-within the collection.

-If you get a chance

-deepest and darkest secrets.

-I'm glad to say that my family

-isn't included on this register!

-I'm not sure if I could say

-the same thing about the Lees.
