-Monmouthshire National Eisteddfod.

-I visit the town's attractions that

-are connected to the Welsh language.

-Rhodri Gomer meets Team GB cyclist,

-Owain Doull who's in Rio next month.

-We also meet a dog called Alfie who

-is a reading assistant for children.

-St Mary's Priory is an ancient site

-in Abergavenny from Norman times.

-It's latest addition is currently

-attracting a lot of visitors.

-Behind me is a fantastic window

-that's full of colour...

-..that portray Moses and David,

-the forefathers of Jesus.

-It also contains the Celtic saints

-which is rare in a Christian window.

-At the base of the window, there's

-medicinal plants found in Wales.

-This is new

-and has recently been unveiled.

-I'd tell everyone to come and see it

-because it's beautiful.

-Yes, the window is amazing...

-..but for myself

-and a host of other visitors...

-..we're not amazed by the glass

-in this church but its wood.

-This wooden statue is unique

-to Britain and maybe even the world!

-The most incredible fact

-is that this is one piece of wood.

-It's an oak that was cut down

-hundreds of years ago...

-..and was carved into one

-of this church's main artefacts.

-St Mary's Priory has something

-special around every corner.

-This is Wales' Westminster Abbey

-that's linked to wealthy families.

-In those days, these families

-gave their wealth to the church.

-The choir stalls were carved

-to mark the nuptials...

-..of Prince Arthur

-and Catherine of Aragon.

-The local aristocracy had close ties

-with the Tudor family.

-And with the Welsh language too!

-This is the Herbert Chapel and they

-were like royalty in South Wales.

-William ap Thomas married Gwladus

-the Dark, the Star of Abergavenny.

-Some say she was beautiful

-but was certainly very wealthy.

-She was the widow of a Vaughan of

-Tretower and daughter of David Gam.

-Her first husband and father were

-killed in the Battle of Agincourt.

-William ap Thomas married her and

-lived with her and their children...

-..including their eldest son,

-William Herbert.

-They sponsored many poets in their

-palatial home of Raglan Castle.

-Gwladus isn't the only local heroine

-of the Welsh language and culture.

-Centuries later, another noble lady

-became famous for promoting Welsh...

-..and she's celebrated

-at the local museum.

-It's Lady Llanover,

-the Bee of Gwent!

-She promoted the Welsh language

-and culture in the 19th century.

-Her parents were from Nottingham

-and they bought Llanover Hall.

-At some point, Lady Llanover

-or Augusta Waddington...

-..fell in love with the language,

-culture and traditions of the area.

-She learnt to speak Welsh

-and also sponsored Eisteddfodau.

-Those people coming to the

-Eisteddfod in Abergavenny...

-..should visit the church and castle

-to learn about the Herberts...

-..and this exhibition

-to see what Lady Llanover did...

-..for the language, culture,

-traditions and our nation.

-We're all excited for the Eisteddfod

-and the area has many attractions.

-The castle and museum

-are right by the Eisteddfod Maes.

-It's wonderful for a photographer.

-I love seeing

-the informal competitions.

-There's so much to see.

-Keith is here tonight to launch the

-2016 summer photography competition.

-It's that time of year for the

-summer photography competition.

-I'm hoping for some sunshine before

-the end of August.

-It doesn't matter if the weather is

-bad...

-..because you can take photographs

-of the rain...

-..as it hammers on your caravan

-windows!

-This competition is very popular.

-There's so much potential in this

-competition.

-Let's see some of the photographs

-we've received in the past.

-I want to see the way that people

-react to the weather...

-..and the season.

-I prefer photographs of people to

-landscapes.

-I love the photograph of the girl on

-the swing.

-It's one of my photographs.

-There's another of someone gazing at

-the sunset.

-..when the sun was shining!

-It's great to see the couple holding

-hands.

-It goes against their hard image

-with their tattoos.

-He could sleep on that line.

-will travel to Rio next month...

-Men's track endurance.

-..and Sir Bradley Wiggins.

-How does it feel to represent

-Britain in the Rio Olympic Games?

-It's very exciting and I have worked

-towards this for two to three years.

-Being selected for a place on the

-plane to Rio is momentous for me.

-You've focused on track work for

-several years with Team Wiggins.

-The team aimed to unite everyone

-who was training for the Olympics.

-Three of the four squad members come

-from Team Wiggins so that's the aim.

-Describe working with Sir Bradley.

-It's phenomenal

-and Brad's a perfectionist.

-Watching him tackle different goals

-is an experience in itself.

-You've been focusing on the track

-but have gained success on the road.

-It hasn't been so much this year

-because the focus is the Olympics.

-But last year,

-I did the Tour of Britain.

-Signing with Team Sky was amazing

-and it's all part of my big plan.

-I've fulfilled a dream.

-Team Sky started back in 2010

-when I was a 16-year-old cyclist.

-Representing Team Sky for the next

-two years is monumental for me.

-What is your schedule before

-and after the Olympic Games?

-I'm at the Altitude Training Camp

-in Italy prior to the Olympic Games.

-I'm also looking forward to staying

-at the pre-holding camp in Newport.

-My trip to the Rio Olympics

-is followed by a short break.

-I'll return to my training for the

-World Road Championships in Qatar.

-When are joining Team Sky

-and starting to race on the road?

-I start immediately after Rio

-with a training trip to Nice.

-I'll partake in some smaller races

-just to familiarize with the team.

-You've been five years in Manchester

-and it's perfect for track training.

-Yes, I finished school at 18 and

-moved immediately to Manchester.

-It's the best place to train for

-cycling, the Olympics and Team GB.

-But you plan to move back to Wales.

-Yes, I'll move back to Cardiff

-a year after the Olympic Games.

-I'll commute between there and Nice.

-What are your prospects

-for the Olympics and the future?

-The aim is for an Olympic win as

-it will please the team and myself.

-I've dedicated four years to it.

-In the future, I hope to emulate

-Luke and Geraint's road success...

-..in the Classics

-and Tour de France.

-Throughout July at Llanelly House,

-we have a series of events...

-..to commemorate the Welsh soldiers

-who fought in the Somme and Mametz.

-On 29 July, we'll have poetry, music

-and food from World War I.

-I'm stunned at the food they had

-and have got hold of a few ideas.

-One of the popular dishes

-was called Maconochie's All In One.

-It contained meat and vegetables

-and gave them energy to fight.

-This was one of the staples

-in their diet.

-There's plenty to see

-at Llanelly House during the day.

-We've got a film from the

-Imperial War Museum in London...

-..that was made during the war and

-the Battle of the Somme in 1916.

-There's also a replica of the dragon

-that sits in Mametz...

-..and a poppy from the installation

-at the Tower of London in 2014.

-We're open most days of the year.

-Come and see us this month to see

-the exhibits linked with the Somme.

-It's the summer holidays and parents

-want to entertain their little ones.

-There's many centres dotted around

-Wales including Jig-So in Cardigan.

-Its latest member is a dog called

-Alfie who helps children to read.

-Our cameras went to meet him.

-Jig-So is a charity that's been

-based in Cardigan for 25 years.

-We support children and families

-and work with both child and parent.

-Jig-So helps children to reach their

-potential through various means.

-Our latest initiative is for

-children to work with Alfie.

-He sits with the children

-and they love reading to him.

-He chased the fast squirrel.

-Alfie is a fantastic Labrador who

-is happy to sit with the children.

-We've witnessed a change in the

-children since sitting with Alfie.

-They read in Welsh and English and

-it brings them out of their shells.

-Alfie has come

-to hear us read stories.

-He's helped with my confidence

-as I don't enjoy reading to people.

-I like to read alone

-but this has helped me.

-I don't have any pets at home.

-But meeting Alfie

-has been a fantastic experience.

-Alfie looks adorable!
