2015 Hogmanay Live

Hello and welcome to Hogmanay Live 2015 here at the Old Fruitmarket

Tonight we are counting down to 2016 with brilliant live music,

lots of fireworks and a New Year party not to be missed,

so make sure you stay with us till the bells

and beyond as we have a fantastic line-up for you.

We are packed to the rafters here at the Fruitmarket,

with talented musicians and singers from across the land joining me

The turbo-charged Celtic supergroup who'll have you up dancing in no

time, it's the Treacherous Orchestra.

Mixing it up with their version of the biggest hits from the year

are Glasgow based a cappella sensation Choral Stimulation.

It just wouldn't be Hogmanay without the legends that

And they've sold more than 100 million records and

As we know, Edinburgh's Hogmanay is world-famous, so to tell us

what is happening in the capital tonight is a lady who not only knows

a thing or two about the weather but has dazzled us with her dance

moves on Strictly, it's Carol Kirkwood.

I am here at the Old Town Ceilidh on the historic Royal Mile just

outside St Giles' Cathedral, where we are bringing in the bells

But this is just part of Edinburgh's Hogmanay

as the celebrations are spread right across the city,

with 75,000 people enjoying one of the world's biggest outdoor parties.

And we'll be bringing you a slice of these festivities

with a brilliant performance from Scots rockers Biffy Clyro

At the castle, we'll start 2016 with a bang as the spectacular

fireworks light up the sky at midnight.

And I'll be chatting to revellers who have come from all over

the world to find out about their Hogmanay experience.

But first we are heading to the Ross Bandstand

in Princes Street Gardens, where the Boghall and Bathgate

Caledonia Pipe Band were first to take to the stage.

Now it's time for a band who've had an incredibly successful year.

They are renowned for their relentless energy and unique sound.

This year, their album Grind won best album at the Scots

It's the fabulous Treacherous Orchestra.

There were only four of them when we started rehearsing.

Earlier this year, ten students from Glasgow University became

a singing sensation on our TV screens as they beat 400 choirs

to become finalists in BBC Two's The Naked Choir.

Tonight, they have joined us to perform their mix

Well, the party atmosphere really is heating up here

Earlier tonight, 2,016 people joined in for an enormous Strip The Willow

as they attempted to smash the record for the world's largest

It really was an amazing sight to have so many people birling up

And joining me now are some people who took part.

From Aberdeen. What brought you to Edinburgh? The ceilidh! What is it

like in Aberdeen? A bit grey! This is just amazing. You can say that

again. Where are you from? New York! This is totally different, why did

you come here? It has been on my bucket list for ten years and I kept

talking to my kids about it and now we are here. My niece lives here and

she is going back to the state in ten days. It has been amazing. The

weather is different here. The temperature is about the same but it

is lovely and there's no snow. Quite right. Where are you from?

Liverpool. It is fabulous here tonight. We will have to count the

people to see if they have broken the record.

We have got some tweaks. -- tweets. Raymond obviously got a selfie stick

for Christmas. And we have a gorgeous picture of the Northern

Cunningham and Aly Bain. Now, I have caught up with some more

people enjoying the ceilidh We are from Chelmsford in Essex.

What made you come to night? We are visiting family and friends. Have

you been to Hogmanay before? No. It's brilliant, we did Strip The

Willow as well. It was crazy, so many people joining in. And where

have you come from? Just down the road in Trinity, this is apparently

better than the street parties! The ceilidh has been fabulous. Where are

you from? Perth originally. I'm having a great time tonight, really

getting into it. How does it compare to Hogmanay in Perth? It is a long

time since I lived there but it was more traditional, it is bigger here

but a lot of fun. In my day we used to bring a lump of coal and a bottle

of whiskey round! Fabulous hats. We are dressed for the occasion! Where

have you come from? Sunny Norfolk. What brought you to Edinburgh? It

gives us a good work-out in the hills! Welcomer have a lovely

evening ahead. I think everybody is getting very excited but for now, it

is back to Glasgow. Now, our last performance of 2015

has been 40 years in the making. First time round, we screamed,

we shouted and tartan The flares have gone,

Biffy Clyro have been rocking Princes Street Gardens.

It's an extra special gig tonight as the band have been locked away

in the studio for most of this year writing their new album.

It's their one and only gig of the year.

for my favourite musicians, Not only will Aly be

celebrating his 70th birthday and Phil is marking 40 years

in the biz, but these guys must have one of the most successful musical

partnerships in history as they have What is the secret of this

partnership? What people don't realise is that we have been living

as a married couple for the last 25 years. The older we get, the better

we used to be, and that is what keeps us going. I wish you all the

best in your special year. What have you got for us? We are going to play

a tune I wrote for a good friend of ours. It is named after Tam the Gun.

Used to fire the canon. And then a set of three reels written by Aly

during a lucid moment. Are we ready? Phil and Aly starting their big year

with a wonderful set. Now back to Carol for one last time

to see how 2016 is shaping The ceilidh is still in full swing

here at the Royal Mile, it really is a great way to bring

in the New Year and keep warm I can tell you that the temperature

here in Edinburgh is two Celsius. We've met people from all

round the world, hopefully have broken a world record,

seen the most spectacular fireworks over Edinburgh Castle,

felt uplifted with Boghall and Bathgate Pipe Band and rocked

out with one of the best ever I have had an absolute ball and I

hope you have as well. There is still a lot of dancing taking place

and a lot of music to enjoy and fun to be had to see in this New Year.
