Tonight we are counting down to 2016 with brilliant live music,

:00:21.:00:32.

:00:33.:00:36.

so make sure you stay with us till the bells

:00:37.:00:38.

and beyond as we have a fantastic line-up for you.

:00:39.:00:40.

We are packed to the rafters here at the Fruitmarket,

:00:41.:00:43.

with talented musicians and singers from across the land joining me

:00:44.:00:48.

The turbo-charged Celtic supergroup who'll have you up dancing in no

:00:49.:00:52.

time, it's the Treacherous Orchestra.

:00:53.:00:56.

Mixing it up with their version of the biggest hits from the year

:00:57.:00:59.

are Glasgow based a cappella sensation Choral Stimulation.

:01:00.:01:03.

It just wouldn't be Hogmanay without the legends that

:01:04.:01:05.

And they've sold more than 100 million records and

:01:06.:01:11.

We hope that wherever you are your having a great Hogmanay. If the

:01:12.:01:36.

weather has affected you, our thoughts with you.

:01:37.:01:37.

Tonight's show is going out across the whole of the UK

:01:38.:01:40.

on the red button and we are also going global!

:01:41.:01:42.

So if you've got relatives abroad, then why not let them know they can

:01:43.:01:45.

join the best party in town on bbc.co.uk/hogmanay.

:01:46.:01:47.

We also want to hear how you are celebrating the New Year,

:01:48.:01:50.

so why not get involved at #BBCHogmanay?

:01:51.:01:52.

As we know, Edinburgh's Hogmanay is world-famous, so to tell us

:01:53.:01:58.

what is happening in the capital tonight is a lady who not only knows

:01:59.:02:02.

a thing or two about the weather but has dazzled us with her dance

:02:03.:02:06.

moves on Strictly, it's Carol Kirkwood.

:02:07.:02:12.

I am here at the Old Town Ceilidh on the historic Royal Mile just

:02:13.:02:17.

outside St Giles' Cathedral, where we are bringing in the bells

:02:18.:02:19.

But this is just part of Edinburgh's Hogmanay

:02:20.:02:25.

as the celebrations are spread right across the city,

:02:26.:02:29.

with 75,000 people enjoying one of the world's biggest outdoor parties.

:02:30.:02:35.

And we'll be bringing you a slice of these festivities

:02:36.:02:38.

with a brilliant performance from Scots rockers Biffy Clyro

:02:39.:02:41.

At the castle, we'll start 2016 with a bang as the spectacular

:02:42.:02:51.

fireworks light up the sky at midnight.

:02:52.:02:53.

And I'll be chatting to revellers who have come from all over

:02:54.:02:56.

the world to find out about their Hogmanay experience.

:02:57.:03:01.

But first we are heading to the Ross Bandstand

:03:02.:03:03.

in Princes Street Gardens, where the Boghall and Bathgate

:03:04.:03:06.

Caledonia Pipe Band were first to take to the stage.

:03:07.:03:17.

Boghall and Bathgate Pipe Band kicking off the Concert

:03:18.:06:18.

in the Gardens, and as Carol said, we'll be going back there later

:06:19.:06:22.

Now it's time for a band who've had an incredibly successful year.

:06:23.:06:29.

They are renowned for their relentless energy and unique sound.

:06:30.:06:32.

This year, their album Grind won best album at the Scots

:06:33.:06:35.

It's the fabulous Treacherous Orchestra.

:06:36.:06:44.

There were only four of them when we started rehearsing.

:06:45.:10:58.

Earlier this year, ten students from Glasgow University became

:10:59.:11:01.

a singing sensation on our TV screens as they beat 400 choirs

:11:02.:11:04.

to become finalists in BBC Two's The Naked Choir.

:11:05.:11:06.

Tonight, they have joined us to perform their mix

:11:07.:11:08.

Get ready for some a cappella Choral Stimulation!

:11:09.:11:22.

# I was wondering if after all these years

:11:23.:11:32.

# You'd like to meet to go over everything

:11:33.:11:41.

# They say that time's supposed to heal ya

:14:33.:14:47.

# Won't you let us wander Let us hold each other

# Hold back the river let me look in your eyes

:14:57.:14:59.

# Hold back the river so I can stop for a minute

:15:00.:15:05.

# Hold back the river Hold back

:15:06.:15:22.

CLAUSE Wasn't that great? Really different.

:15:23.:15:30.

Wow, ten tunes from 2015, including the likes of Adele,

:15:31.:15:32.

And Choral Stimulation will be joining us for Auld Lang Syne later.

:15:33.:15:36.

Now time to catch up with Carol in the capital.

:15:37.:15:44.

Well, the party atmosphere really is heating up here

:15:45.:15:48.

Earlier tonight, 2,016 people joined in for an enormous Strip The Willow

:15:49.:15:55.

as they attempted to smash the record for the world's largest

:15:56.:15:58.

It really was an amazing sight to have so many people birling up

:15:59.:16:05.

And joining me now are some people who took part.

:16:06.:16:24.

From Aberdeen. What brought you to Edinburgh? The ceilidh! What is it

:16:25.:16:41.

like in Aberdeen? A bit grey! This is just amazing. You can say that

:16:42.:16:51.

again. Where are you from? New York! This is totally different, why did

:16:52.:16:56.

you come here? It has been on my bucket list for ten years and I kept

:16:57.:17:00.

talking to my kids about it and now we are here. My niece lives here and

:17:01.:17:06.

she is going back to the state in ten days. It has been amazing. The

:17:07.:17:13.

weather is different here. The temperature is about the same but it

:17:14.:17:18.

is lovely and there's no snow. Quite right. Where are you from?

:17:19.:17:28.

Liverpool. It is fabulous here tonight. We will have to count the

:17:29.:17:34.

people to see if they have broken the record.

:17:35.:17:35.

We have got some tweaks. -- tweets. Raymond obviously got a selfie stick

:17:36.:17:56.

for Christmas. And we have a gorgeous picture of the Northern

:17:57.:18:01.

lights. Keep in touch and tell us what you are up to.

:18:02.:18:06.

Now, time for more music from two of Scotland's finest musicians.

:18:07.:18:12.

They have even set up shop here in the Fruitmarket. They have their

:18:13.:18:19.

name above the door. They are always top of my

:18:20.:18:20.

first-footing list - The fabulous Phil

:18:21.:18:23.

Cunningham and Aly Bain. Now, I have caught up with some more

:18:24.:21:31.

people enjoying the ceilidh We are from Chelmsford in Essex.

:21:32.:21:46.

What made you come to night? We are visiting family and friends. Have

:21:47.:21:53.

you been to Hogmanay before? No. It's brilliant, we did Strip The

:21:54.:21:59.

Willow as well. It was crazy, so many people joining in. And where

:22:00.:22:05.

have you come from? Just down the road in Trinity, this is apparently

:22:06.:22:13.

better than the street parties! The ceilidh has been fabulous. Where are

:22:14.:22:17.

you from? Perth originally. I'm having a great time tonight, really

:22:18.:22:25.

getting into it. How does it compare to Hogmanay in Perth? It is a long

:22:26.:22:31.

time since I lived there but it was more traditional, it is bigger here

:22:32.:22:37.

but a lot of fun. In my day we used to bring a lump of coal and a bottle

:22:38.:22:44.

of whiskey round! Fabulous hats. We are dressed for the occasion! Where

:22:45.:22:50.

have you come from? Sunny Norfolk. What brought you to Edinburgh? It

:22:51.:22:56.

gives us a good work-out in the hills! Welcomer have a lovely

:22:57.:23:03.

evening ahead. I think everybody is getting very excited but for now, it

:23:04.:23:06.

is back to Glasgow. Now, our last performance of 2015

:23:07.:23:09.

has been 40 years in the making. First time round, we screamed,

:23:10.:23:19.

we shouted and tartan The flares have gone,

:23:20.:23:21.

but those timeless tracks live on, so scream and shout for the Bay City

:23:22.:23:32.

:27:15.:27:16.

going Roller-mad at the end But first, the clock is ticking

:27:17.:28:25.

towards the spectacular New Year fireworks, so before we count down

:28:26.:28:34.

to midnight with stunning shots from round the country,

:28:35.:28:38.

let's take a moment to reflect on the year gone by as we join our

:28:39.:28:42.

Lone Piper on Edinburgh Castle's ramparts, Senior Pipe

:28:43.:28:45.

Major Martin MacDonald. What a spectacular

:28:46.:30:28.

way to start 2016. A very Happy New Year to you! Are

:30:29.:35:29.

you ready for a singsong? In an international song of friendship. We

:35:30.:35:33.

have a very special arrangement of it. What else but Auld Lang Syne.

:35:34.:35:38.

# Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind?

:35:39.:35:48.

# Should auld acquaintance be forgot and auld lang syne?

:35:49.:36:01.

# And there's a hand my trusty fiere and gie's a hand o' thine

:36:02.:36:39.

# And we'll tak' a right gude willie waught for auld lang syne

:36:40.:36:48.

A beautiful version of Auld Lang Syne arranged

:36:49.:38:39.

by Phil Cunningham with Choral Stimulation,

:38:40.:38:41.

Aly Bain and members of the Treacherous Orchestra.

:38:42.:38:43.

Time now to catch up with Carol in Edinburgh.

:38:44.:38:45.

As we've been ceilidh dancing up here at the Royal Mile,

:38:46.:38:55.

Biffy Clyro have been rocking Princes Street Gardens.

:38:56.:38:58.

It's an extra special gig tonight as the band have been locked away

:38:59.:39:01.

in the studio for most of this year writing their new album.

:39:02.:39:06.

It's their one and only gig of the year.

:39:07.:39:12.

# Play another song, then you can win.

:39:13.:39:49.

# Are used to win # Lyrical macro maybe there's a

:39:50.:40:01.

start-up the air # Baby if you could would

:40:02.:40:33.

:40:34.:43:01.

all fall apart again? A fantastic performance from Biffy

:43:02.:43:23.

Clyro. And we look forward to seeing their new album in 2016.

:43:24.:43:28.

But if you can't wait, highlights of their whole Edinburgh

:43:29.:43:30.

gig will be going on iPlayer, so keep an eye out for that.

:43:31.:43:33.

A shout out to four-year-old Amy from Greenock. She is staying up for

:43:34.:43:44.

her first ever bells. To launder in London who just got engaged,

:43:45.:43:49.

congratulations. She is watching BBC Scotland to remind her of home.

:43:50.:43:53.

Sarah and her friend in Glasgow are taking in the bells in their

:43:54.:43:54.

pyjamas. 2016 is also a huge year

:43:55.:43:57.

for my favourite musicians, Not only will Aly be

:43:58.:43:59.

celebrating his 70th birthday and Phil is marking 40 years

:44:00.:44:09.

in the biz, but these guys must have one of the most successful musical

:44:10.:44:12.

partnerships in history as they have What is the secret of this

:44:13.:44:27.

partnership? What people don't realise is that we have been living

:44:28.:44:31.

as a married couple for the last 25 years. The older we get, the better

:44:32.:44:40.

we used to be, and that is what keeps us going. I wish you all the

:44:41.:44:44.

best in your special year. What have you got for us? We are going to play

:44:45.:44:50.

a tune I wrote for a good friend of ours. It is named after Tam the Gun.

:44:51.:44:59.

Used to fire the canon. And then a set of three reels written by Aly

:45:00.:45:07.

during a lucid moment. Are we ready? Phil and Aly starting their big year

:45:08.:45:19.

with a wonderful set. Now back to Carol for one last time

:45:20.:48:21.

to see how 2016 is shaping The ceilidh is still in full swing

:48:22.:48:27.

here at the Royal Mile, it really is a great way to bring

:48:28.:48:35.

in the New Year and keep warm I can tell you that the temperature

:48:36.:48:38.

here in Edinburgh is two Celsius. We've met people from all

:48:39.:48:45.

round the world, hopefully have broken a world record,

:48:46.:48:49.

seen the most spectacular fireworks over Edinburgh Castle,

:48:50.:48:51.

felt uplifted with Boghall and Bathgate Pipe Band and rocked

:48:52.:48:53.

out with one of the best ever I have had an absolute ball and I

:48:54.:49:15.

hope you have as well. There is still a lot of dancing taking place

:49:16.:49:19.

and a lot of music to enjoy and fun to be had to see in this New Year.

:49:20.:49:29.

It would be rude to not join in! Whatever you are doing, have a

:49:30.:49:37.

fabulous day, keep safe. From all of us here, back to you in Glasgow.

:49:38.:49:42.

Now, to keep the dancing going here at the Fruitmarket

:49:43.:49:48.

we have a very special collaboration as Phil and Aly join

:49:49.:49:54.

the Treacherous Orchestra for their phenomenal track,

:49:55.:49:57.

And if you wish to see more music shortly after the show,

:49:58.:54:18.

then we will have exclusive tracks from Treacherous and Biffy Clyro

:54:19.:54:21.

In a moment, it's going to be tartan mayhem as we finish with another

:54:22.:54:26.

I do hope you've enjoyed bringing in the bells with us as we've

:54:27.:54:32.

certainly enjoyed celebrating New Year with you.

:54:33.:54:34.

If you want to continue partying, then why not catch up with BBC Alba,

:54:35.:54:37.

who are in Perthshire until 1.15am, or why not check out

:54:38.:54:41.

Robert Florence's lighter look at Hogmanay, Rab's First Footer.

:54:42.:54:46.

Thanks to all my guests tonight - the Bay City Rollers.

:55:05.:55:20.

tartan scarf. As if by magic! We are going to keep dancing.

:55:21.:55:22.
