Episode 4 The Apprentice: You're Fired

Where is your brains? That's nonsense. This is a disgrace. The

failure is down to you. You're CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

Good evening. Welcome to The Apprentice: You're

Fired. It is task four in Lord Sugar's search for his business

partner, but where 16 started only 12 remain. We will be getting under

the skin of the one who failed to sell herself to Lord Sugar. This

week it was a special championship to see which of the boys could be

more cheepy child selling beauty products. An early leader, of

course, was Glenn. I can't talk you through what they

are, they are pretty. You're pretty. That looks very cool.

But just for the sheer over eagerness, the winner has to be Jim.

Four hands are better than two. LAUGHTER

Let's meet our panel, Nicky Kinnaird, comedian, Ed Byrne and

model and broadcaster, Lisa Snowdon. Welcome to You are You're fired.

Tonight's task of selling beauty products and treatments resulted in

one candidate being shown the door. Felicity, all you've told me is the

team agreed this. The team agreed that. The person person I'm looking

for to work with me, there is no team. A lot of decisions aren't

really made here. For that reason, Felicity, you are fired.

Thank you for for this opportunity. Please welcome welcome Felicity

Jackson. I condition imagine the -- I can't

imagine the stress of of watching a show like that. Did you feel tense?

I know this place, it is a massage where you are like an old woman

being massaged in the chair beside you. Is it weird watching it back?

It was weird. It wean as bad as I thought it was going to be because

it is condensed so they missed out loads of the mistakes we made.

Really, there was more? There was more. There was more.

You are not one of those apprentices who will come out and

say, "I am furious." It was a tragedy.

Let's remind ourselves. You seem to have lost the plot.

This was a disastrous task. Initially, we wanted the the spray

tan. That's where they took most of

their money. We haven't done any messages so

far? What the hell was going on for four hours? The products are

selling really well. I stated this task was all about providing

treatments. Are they pushing the treatments

down here? They haven't mentioned it yet. They are just selling the

products. Who decided to spend nearly �800.

I wish we could get more of everything.

What is all this as a team? As a team one of you is leaving today.

You lost money. Yes. That. That doesn't happen that often? No. I

think that we missed the point of the task. We spent too much money

on the products. We forgot about the treatments and we just kind of

focused on the hair bows and forgot that actually the margin was much

higher. Was there a lightbulb above head

moment when you realised? About 3.30pm. We had a couple more hours

to go and it was kind of like, "Yeah, we're going to lose this

unless something has happened worse on the other team. We're definitely

going to lose this.". Nicky, had is your industry. Was it obvious they

made a mistake here? Extremely challenging trying to operate on

two different levels. I mean you've got great pedestrian flow in front

of where you had the retail pitch which actually wasn't the main task

in hand and then somehow or another you had to get customers to go to

the third floor for the treatment piece.

Literally, on two floors. But you had seven people. You could have

hired a shuttle bus and driven people the three floors? Yes.

It would have taken that because a customer will try and escape every

bit on the journey. I would like to have seen a

customer trying to escape, chased through The Bull Ring. You lost

money. It is unfair to give out to you for losing money. The other

team made 200 quid bearing in mind they had six or seven people

working for free and they had a three roomed treatment centre

upstairs. You don't come home with �200 when you have got got oh, who

pays the rent? More money could have been made and wasn't. I think

Lord Sugar should have been more angry with everyone on this task.

Lisa? You put too much empa sis on the product and and it was all

about the treatments and that's where you were going to make your

money. You wanted to buy more of the bows and the Lady Gaga bits and

pieces and you weren't in control of your team. You weren't driving

people upstairs and that's where, unfortunately and you had one

treatment room. When Tom came down an hour or two

hours into it? I think about three, yeah.

What was your reaction, "Hey, it is Tom, here are some bows.". Where

have you been all morning? I want to know why you brought Tom down.

I brought Tom down because I would like to talk down to him a bit

more? The reason why I brought Tom down was because a lot of girls

wouldn't have wanted a guy to do the massaging because I had Ellie

up there. I thought Ellie would be able to do massages and that's why

I brought Tom down. Now I think I would have been better to bring

Melody down. When she came down, she drove a lot of sales up.

You don't deal with buying products and selling it. It is with the

creative space? Yeah. I run kind of similar to trade shows and what

they are are to help actors survive in between jobs and there is lots

of promo and there is children's entertaining and teaching so what I

do I run big events and so I've never actually had to buy products

and... With a view to selling them on? I bought lots of products as a

consumer, but I have never kind of, you know, been on the other side

and I found that really difficult. That's often the case on the The

Apprentice, "I know that, I buy that stuff, therefore I should be

great at this task." "oh, it is milk. I didn't sign on for this.".

It is, you know, it is pounds and pence. It is like any other

business. If you are buying nuts and bolts.

But if you are talking about treatments, it is very personal. So

how you treat that customer is different from just simply standing

there, hard sell, a product, at the end of the day what you are asking

people to do was go three floors upstairs, take their clothes off

and lead and leave their bodies in whose ever hands. A different

proposition. Harvesting organs.

One kidney, my friend. The problem with the treatment room being far

away that's why Jim looked as sweaty and out of breath as he did

when he arrived. He couldn't have looked more sinister if he was

covered in blood! "who is next?". I mean Tom looks

like a neared, but dress Tom up in that thing and he looks like the

psycho dentist. Yeah, he does look like him. OK, let's move on now to

Natasha who frankly should be given an Oscar For this sales pitch.

Just because it is blond doesn't necessarily mean it doesn't look

good if that makes sense. It doesn't necessarily mean,

however it doesn't look good! LAUGHTER

It looks weird. I mean, would you encourage your staff to lie about

products? That would concern me greatly.

That rash is fine. That's a happy rash!

It is beautiful, you know, you had to sell on The Prentice? I did

stretch the truth a little bit. It wasn't as bad as that with the

blond on the dark hair. I was selling stuff. I turned into like a

car car dealer. I had skills I never knew I had. I managed to sell

a red leather sofa with an inbuilt TV for somebody who came along for

a drink. You have to do what you have to do. I wanted the product to

fly out the door and it did. This has to be the product of the

series so far. Winge is the fusion of a wig and a

fringe. It is like a pet hamster a little

bit. We will just demonstrate that on

people. You have got a fairly believable

clipping winge. That's a very good colour match.

I still don't think it suits me. Nick, can we tempt you with a a

fringe. It looks like you just ped a rabbit

-- scalped a a rabbit. From exactly this angle, that works.

That works. LAUGHTER

Now then. Now then. But if I do that - I think the

illusion is shattered. It has a life to it as well

actually. It is good quality hair!

I feel like I'm going to a rave. Do you want to try?

It does look like... LAUGHTER

It doesn't work work quite as well with me. Ah, Mr Bond.

Mr Dara O'Briain, I have been expecting you!

Were you impressed? Was it a difficult sell this one?

LAUGHTER This is strange. This is hot!

LAUGHTER It was weird actually because I

think that was the first thing that sold. So I was like, "Oh maybe

these are going to sell quite well" and then they didn't.

If you were buying a beauty product and you are wondering how do I look,

you don't want to see this? LAUGHTER

I'm sorry, I'm sorry, he is here, Nick. How are you?

I'm very well. That wasn't a help, Nick.

LAUGHTER Sorry.

Were you that disgusted by that? That was the the onset of a day of

heartburn actually. It was a badly fractured performance the whole

thing, wasn't it? There was a point however, I don't think you could

have hinted more, you were practically, more treatments. More

treatments. I try to be very dispassionate and

removed from it, but sometimes one is forced to actually sort of state

the obvious and selling the wrong product and that actually is the

down escalator, isn't it? lesson we learned over the years,

never claim to be an expert on The Apprentice.

Can I tempt you to try some tanning lotion. I have my own business. I

sell skin care products for a living.

Susan put herself forward as the beauty guru. Somebody who knows

this this industry industry inside out.

Well, if you set yourself up as something you're not, you're in for

a great big fall. Tanings for just �10. It is �10 for

a full body spray. I won't be buying any. Is it too

expensive for you? Yeah, Nicky, she does have her own

skin care company, but was she blowing her trumpet a bit? Overly

ambitious given the products they were talking about and she herself

didn't manage to get close to the numbers she was talking about even

her own personal performance and that was someone with a skin care

background. Her reaction when she got called on

it. It was classic Apprentice. You said you could do this and you

didn't do that and she was like, "Well, that is your fault.", "You

said you could do it." "and you believed me.". Was it necessary to

point out, there is an I told you so element that they decided to

take time out to point to the person that you did this wrong. We

are all in a line. You can actually see her getting a kicking here.

You got Susan there who is in the beauty business. I'm regretting a

lot of the decisions that were made on advice made by given.

I think we can sell 72 tanning products.

I thought that was too high. Do you think you can sell that

amount? I think it will be a lot. There were four salespeople and

eight hours in one day. Your words were, "I can sell 60 on

my own." I did not say I could sell 60 on my own.

Did you have stuff over then? You have had... This is so unfair,

Zoe. It is not unfair. You made your bed

and you have got to lie in it. You have given advice and you have

got to take accountability for it. I don't understand why you have a

go at me. There is no friends in this place.

Yes, panto crowd. How did you find Suzie? I really

got on with Suzie and actually I think what Zoe and Helen did to her,

I don't think was very good for the whole team spirit and I think it

was real game playing and what happened was that Zoe thought this

is going wrong. Let's pin it on someone quickly and so she went

downstairs and made sure that everybody could see she had a go at

Suzie so when it came to the boardroom she had somebody to pin

it on. However, however... sound of an audience thinking.

However, maybe I should have taken a leave out of Zoe's book and made

people, you know, be accountable for their own decisions. So when he

came to ask me to take it, I could have said two people and given good

reasons for them. How is that a surprise? Two. What,

how long have they been doing? It is, one, isn't it. For years, it

has always been one. Really? Really? How can you dither about it

for that long? I'm trying to think. Having dithered and then used the

phrase, "Right, I'm going to be decisive."

LAUGHTER Do you regret say not bringing Jim

in? Tom? No, I wouldn't have brought

Tom in because actually if I listened to Tom a bit more we

probably wouldn't have made the mistakes we did.

APPLAUSE Tom doing well.

You were very mean to Tom, I thought. Yeah.

I like Tom. I don't know what it is about Tom, but I like him.

I really like Tom as well, but I should have listened to him.

It was the stop reading thing., ""Tom, stop reading that. I don't

want there there being any possibility of excess information."

"Take the book out of your hand.". Let's hear what Lord Sugar and your

former colleagues had to say about you.

The key to this task was to bring people up and to have the

treatments. She didn't do anything. She didn't do anything at all. She

lost me money. She didn't look at the big picture

in terms of what was critical. I really liked working with her,

but she made a mistake in not taking a step back and realising

the profit margins on the services compared to the products.

Lodgically, I don't think she made any strategy or plan of how we were

going to get people from the sales floor to the treatment room.

I think she is a bit like a rabbit in the headlights. This is not a

person that could go into business with me and that's Felicity had to

You're nodding. Yeah, I think that's right to be

honest. I don't think we would work that well together me and Lord

Sugar. I think that's fine. Have you enjoyed the process?

yeah, I had such a good time and when I got fired, I was upset

because I was fired, but I was also upset because I was out of this

whole experience that I was really enjoying.

Is there anything in particular you learned? I think I definitely

learned that sometimes within a team like that you do need to be

more decisive and make sure that you give people their exact job

roles and also take a step back and kind of make sure you read the

whole dossier and make sure you know what you need to do. So.

Nicky, you have been in business, you built up this company, but it

is not all plain sailing? No, there have been a lot of less lessons

learned along the way. The first one was a hard one on location

because I started off in a basement of a former banana warehouse in

Covent Garden when the only street presence was an extra large door

door coming on to the office. The thing was how to get the customer

there? What would you look for in a business partner? Someone with a

complimentary skill set, but I think respect of all parties

involved is critical and that fell short.

Yes. Let's look at the others. Lyon, who

didn't want to get near this task because he has got' girlfriend!

Through gritted teeth, I didn't really want to do it.

I'm not comfortable during that process.

I can't promote this product, I have got a girlfriend and if she

started realising that I was wearing make-up... Why the hell are

you here now if you are not doing the treatments. It doesn't make you

gay. I've got a girlfriend. If two of

you can do it. I think for the sake of five

minutes just spray him. OK, it was bearable. I did it. I

spray tanned a man. I had to take one for the team.

LAUGHTER Like this is the greatest boundary

there is for a man, I spray tanned a man.

I'm not proud it happened back in college, they were younger times

and I'm glad the super-injunction got broken!

This is what I did. It is ridiculous, isn't it? It is

complete overreaction. We've all got drunk and spray tan add man in

our time! Who hasn't? You have got two of them, we do each other.

We phone each other up all the time. "shall I get the spray tan and the

baby sham out." You are getting a nice glow, he really got into it.

The transformation from the most repressed man in the world to the

most metrosexual man in the world and it is worth having a look.

We hooked the girls in. Can do you that for me? He has this

weird finger trick thing that seems to be working with the customers.

We give them one line as we take them over to the tanning area.

will get you naked and spray you. I won't be doing it. A girl will do

it for you. That's the smell that will go with you over your body.

Boom, there is the sale. Marzypan. Hook, line and stinker!

APPLAUSE What scared me the most, "We're

going to get you naked." if in a shopping centre somebody said that

to me, I would be running a mile especially if it came from him.

Finger thing, was it brilliant? worked. They were hypnotised by his

little finger. "we're going tonne a journey.". Would you recommend that

as a sales tip? If I saw that happening on one of our stores I

would freak. Spray frodz, see -- products, see how it smells, the

little finger technique, no thanks. Unless you are a Jew a jitzu expert,

you can't force force someone to come against their will.

If Tom has a girlfriend, I don't know if Tom has a girlfriend if she

is watching, I know the way girlfriends are, you probably want

to look away for this bit because Tom got physical with Jim.

Tom touched Jim's body for 45 minutes. Oh my god.

Tom was loving it. He was touching every little

crevice. He touched him just at the top of his bum as well!

LAUGHTER A funny time.

APPLAUSE He still looks like a psychopathic

dentist. There is nothing like getting stuck

into a message like putting your tie over your shoulder.

Michael Sheen probably doesn't want to play Tom in the movie.

Tom did OK on this, he wasn't brilliant on this particular task.

He was hysterical. A pop star, I can't remember who this is. Hi, it

is Lady Gaga with big bows. I like a man who can't remember

Lady Gaga's name. He goes up and up in my estimatations.

I thought it wasryan that! -- Rihanna.

Apprentice fever is starting to spread. We took the temperature at

the Chelsea Flower Show. I really like Jim, he has got that

Irish charm. But I think he is a silent assassin.

Lyon, I believed in at the beginning. He has not been as

strong as I wanted him to be. I reckon it is going to be Natasha

Scribbins because she has the look of someone who smelt success and

liked it. Melody is overconfident, but seems

to be doing very well. Glenn, I am sure anyone that

attractive can sell anything to anyone.

Tom seems to be reasonably intelligent and haphazard at time.

Tomorrow mass, 31, but he looks like he has a secret that he

doesn't want anyone to know about. You're fired! You're fired.

Do you think Lord Sugar was right to fire Felicity? I think so

because you were the team leader and you did seem like a a rabbit in

the headlights on occasions because it wasn't your natural habitat.

Yes, you should have been fired and were!

Lisa. I really like you, but you wherein in control of your team and

you didn't get to grips with the tacek so I think think -- task so I

think he was right. Let's ask the audience.
