Episode 5 The Apprentice: You're Fired

Where is your brains? This is a disgrace. The failure is down to

you. You're fire. You're fired. You're fired.

APPLAUSE Good evening and welcome to The

Apprentice You're Fired. As Lord Sugar's search for his

business partner continues, with the help of unseen footage, we'll

be feeling the collar of the candidates who bit off more than

they could chew. Why am I abging like it's a normal episode. Double

fire. First let's meet our panel.

Entrepreneur, Debbie Wosskow, Media Executive Kelvin MacKenzie and

comedian Sarah Millican. Welcome to You're Fired. So, we

will go, tonight's task of creating a new brand of creating pet food

left one candidate with an a nasty taste in her mouth. I haven't seen

much of your Ellie. I don't think I could go into business with you. So,

I'm going to tell you that you're fired. OK. Please welcome Ellie

Reed. CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

Aren't you looking the girlie girl? Commiserations. Did you cringe

watching that? Were you disappointed? Disappointed I didn't

speak my mind more. Get my point across enough. I'm not used to so

outspoken people in my my general business. I really enjoyed the

whole experience. It was brilliant. When I went, I was, obviously,

gutted. Which is the word I seem to use quite a lot. Yeah. Yeah, it was

one of those things. I couldn't do really more. I wish I had the

opportunity to be a project manager and kick the lads like Vincent into

shape. I didn't. Let's see where you slipped on this task. I need to

up my game after being in the boardroom. What business person

hangs around for three hours wondering what is going on? It's a

serious issue. You have to come forward. I will be working very

hard today. All right. I haven't heard anything in terms of creation,

idea that is have come directly from Ellie. I said it plenty of

times. You didn't listen to me. are in the firing line. What I

haven't seen from you is being forceful when we are on the task.

Maybe my voice isn't as heard as some of the other people. It leaps

off the page at me really. You had a challenge to make your voice

heard. Was this the wrong task to follow the previous week? I always

thought that the advertising task would be my downfall. I never did

anything in marketing on advertising before. I did stress on

several occasion that is I had a small dog and that I do buy small

dog food. I said it about three or four times. Nobody took it on board.

I think that that was - it was the whole concept of the Everydog that

was our dawn fall. We bought into. It we bought into it. We have

progress. Debbie you are an expert in this field. You are an

entrepreneur working within communications and media. Her per

performance? I had my eye on you from the beginning. I was willing

you to have a voice and was constantly disappointed that you

didn't have one. The point you made, that you are not used to working

with so many vocal people, you run your own business. Yeah. People say

it back to me. You really did have the opportunity to ensure that you

were heard. You know what Lord Sugar is looking for a business

partner not a mouse. You have that voice. It's up to you to make it

heard stkpwhrsm you are a dog owner, what did you think? Did you find

the men too goby for you, is that the truth? Me and Vincent he wound

me up quite a bit. Everyone was strong characters in there. My

business partner in real-life, you know, has made me appreciate her a

lot. We both have. We discuss things as a group, as a pair. We

don't constantly have to shout over each other. Did you feel that

wasn't business-like the way everybody joined in? Yeah. I

think... I'm not an arse licker that happened a lot to the project

managers. I don't suck up to people. I think my downfall, in general,

was the fact I was on the sub team for every single task. Whenever a

project manager is in the boardroom and they lost the task they take

back people from the sub team, they don't know what they have done?

Because I didn't have my say enough, the project manager, that

opportunity wasn't there. Getting your voice heard is difficult?

work in construction. I do. In my head that is burmy builders. In my

dreams, to be honest. Are they quiet as mice your builders? They

do what I tell them to do. You tell them what to do. I do. They

respected me shall I suppose, the guy that is work for me. They know

I know what I'm talking about. pay them. I pay them to do what I

tell them to do. That is how it works? My clients respect my

opinion and things. You say you are not an arse licker, do you think

Jim is an arse licker? Arse licker and a puppeteer. I think that Vince

took Jim's opinion as being everything that he knew. Jim is in

marking, at the end of the day. He would be the best person to know

about these things. Tell us about your relationship with himself,

with Vincent? A couple of weeks ago he took the phone out of your hand?

Yes. Which didn't go down well? found him in that particular task I

found him extremely irritating. He wouldn't let me speak. I sell every

day, that is what I do for a job. I was well handling the situation. He

was there in my ear for a long time. Longer than you guys saw. I lost it.

I was like, "you take it over", "hang on" I southed and passed the

phone off. He did my head in. He is not my person in real-life. Since

then I got on better with him since that particular task. Aren't you

going to have to deal with people like that? I do in business. Mostly

in nightclubs. You think I should be a bouncer. I mean, how do you

make yourself heard when people are piping and piping. How do you get

across is it elbows? Elbows out and get shouting. You know what I mean.

You have to punch your way through it all. I did feel like it

sometimes. You have to have a violent personality and bunch it

through and add act in a collective way at sometime. You would be a gee

news. I was too much of a team player. If I wanted to shine I

should have said - I want to do the sales. That is what I do in my

business day-to-day. I should have made the project manager change

their mind in the role they gave me. This happens to candidates when

they have to to be a movie director for the day. Natasha was no

exception. Reaction. Skinny jeans and high heels. She's leaping

around. Impact. Floor, boom, bang. You need to achieve that. Is that

clear? What did you think of Natasha She came into her own in

this ep side. Prior that I had been reserving judgement on Natasha. The

ad itself was all right, better than the other one. To my mind she

did a good job. She did. Do you love her work? I love anything

where a dog is jumping up-and-down. Isn't it the most amazing thing -

don't have any animals, that is as crows close as I will get. It was

fun. I would just play that back and back just before I go to bed.

Let's hear what Lord Sugar and your former colleagues have to say about

you. Ellie is a strange one, as far as I'm concerned. She is a dog

owner herself. She should have known better to not allow the team

lead tore go down the route they went. She is weak and doesn't add

anything to the team. Ellie who own as dog could have been pro-active

pushing against this. She is a nice person. She is in the background.

She doesn't get involved. looking for a business partner with

dynamism. She didn't demonstrate in the five weeks she was here. For

that reason, regretfully Ellie had to go. What is the reaction? Um...,

Tom had a dog when he was younger himself. You know, he has as much

experience of a dog as I vfplt Jim is a really nice guy. He did think,

you know, he didn't want to end up in the boardroom. He was saying who

should go in the boardroom instead of him, basically. Vince, yeah, I

don't know. We didn't see eye to eye, did we? No. We might move you

out one door. And, is there anything you can take from it? This

is a very specific set of circumstances. You have your own

business? It made me grateful for what I've got. Grand stuff. Do you

think that Lord Sugar was right? was a tough one. You didn't do

yourself any fayres favours. On balance, yes. Was he right? He was

right to let her go. If he was going to fire one it should have

been Vincent. Because he fired two, because he told you last week to

pull your socks up, you didn't pull your socks up. It had to be meor

Natasha, I agree with that. decided yourself - socks, pet.

don't think Lord Sugar ever used the expression, "pull your socks

up". Maybe he should and he will be more successful! I think you didn't

want to turn into the person that it would have made you. That's

right. You are probably better off out. I have been exactly as I am. I

am happy with that. If you agree with Lord Sugar hold up the card

marked, "fire" if you disagreed hold up "hired". I think that's

hired. A split jury tonight. Happy that. Thanks guys.

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE We wanted to give you a souvenir of

your time. It's not a tin of Everydog. It's actually a lot of

about! If you don't take risks in life, you then you don't get

Ladies and gentlemen, Ellie Reed. And, that should have been that

really. We could knock off early, the rest of the night was our own.

No Lord Sugar wasn't finished. got the feeling you are in too in

awe of other people and are playing a risky game in strat guise giezing

by bringing the young people in here. I think a message needs to go

back. Vincent, you're also fired. Thank you. Ladies and gentlemen,

Could you do me a favour and not overpower me with your charisma?

You're beautiful, darling. I'm puty in his hands. When Ellie went, did

you think, "I'm OK?" A little bit, yeah. The hair flung back and I

thought we would be OK. I thought he was going to send us back to the

house, have a go at me and say, "Vincent, step it up" and we would

go from there, but he made a decision to fire me as well.

LAUGHTER Did I? We can show you a tape if you want. But feel the

noose tightening? Did you think this is getting more and more

critical? This was a big task. He decided I was going to be project

give it our best and do something different. As soon as I knew we had

lost the task I thought it was game over. I had this dream that one day

I would walk into this boardroom and you lot were not here. Everydog,

playing the part for joints and heart. You've lost every single

task. Never mind Logic, you should be branded tragic.

The focus group told you don't try that. Size differences, breed

differences to. Pack all of that into one tin is almost impossible.

Every cat, every animal, every whatever you want, it is brilliant.

You are insinuating that that food is good for any dog. Are you not

worried that Everydog sends the wrong message - that your dog is

not special? You might as well have called it Any Old Dog.

Aznar as Vincent is concerned, I've had it with him. APPLAUSE

When the vet was saying don't call it Everydog, right, don't do the

thing you are about to do, the thing you are about to do, in your

head were you seeing the man go... Were you already, was your empire

the Ever-fish, Ever-cat, Ever- rabbit. It was the EasyJet of the

pet world. There were two other people. Two other people that were

at that research group. They look after dogs and both of those said

we look after all these dogs and we feed them all the same thing.

Surely you could have called it Most Dogs, and ended up just a tiny

bit ambitious.. I don't think we pitched it right. It was the dog

food for adult dogs. It was hearts... I can't remember now.

Hearts and joints. That was the specific product. The Everydog was

the brand. Thaund Brad you could have hips -- under that brand cue

have had hips and shoulders. LAUGHTER Now niche is that. Does

your dog suffer from weak eyelashes and toenails? Long hair. We created

this brand. OK, maybe it wasn't the right name but we said Everydog. On

the advertisement we had every doing you could think of. The

majority of dogs eat the same thing. You could have had every type of

dog. These are the usual suspects. I thought it was pretty good.

pretty familiar with the iconography. I know a police line-

up when I see one, thank you very much! I get what you are saying.

You are a dog owner here. Am, yes. Would you buy a product that was

called every ever? I would. Is it not a bit generic? No, the food we

buy is a generic dog food. Did you not like your dog? I don't think he

likes me. That's because you keep giving him rubbish food! Seriously,

there is nothing wrong. It was good, with a poster. Fantastic. I would

say the key thing you need to work on, Vincent, are your listening

skills to. Me that's the one thing you haven't displayed throughout

the previous five episodes. Sarah? It is a lot of fur coat and

no knickers really, isn't it? Because you've got the talk but I

don't know if you've got the back- up. We've certainly got the talk.

We've been here three hours so far! LAUGHTER Let it down nicely but it

is three hours of me time! I don't know... I think Debbie is right.

It's the fact that it wasn't just you, but it it was team and you

have to listen to other people. They had other ideas and you didn't

even listen to what they were because you were so adamant to go

with your own. Don't get us wrong, I regularly work with people who

are idiots but I listen to them before I tell them they are idiots.

Unfair to say it if you don't listen to people, because there are

people you do listen to. You did get Lord Sugar Crosby not choosing

one man. What hold does he have on you. I feel like I've overslept.

think he's taken by Jim. Put your hands up. How you doing?

Busy, busy, busy? He's got Jim to comfort him.

This is your favourite one. We have considered that point carefully.

totally agreement I like that one, Jim. Are you happy with that?

That's just magnificent. LAUGHTER

APPLAUSE Did he have a special place in your

heart? Jim's strong, OK? One thing about Jim in that prois that Jim's

there to win, OK? He is really bang on the money to win. Did I feel in

awe of him? Did I feel scare of bringing him to the boardroom? No,

I didn't. People who do well in business, they are talented, one

thing that they do is they are very good at getting the right people

around them to make it successful. When I'm presented with this team

who lost and I'm asked who shall I bring in, for me Jim was a very

difficult decision to bring him into the boardroom, even though he

did come up with the name Everydog. What did you think of the bromance?

Did you think this was a weakness on his part not to bring in Jim

did. I thought you would have been more tactical and brought him in,

and you would have read the mood of the boardroom. They were gunning

for Jim. You may have stayed. I think you bottled it. Yes. What do

you think of Jim in this situation? I think Jim's absolutely done for.

Sugar can't wait to strangle him frankly. He is done for. He would

have loved to have done it this time. Couldn't do it, and then

angry Sugar spending a week thinking, "I'm going to kill

somebody" is a fantastic piece of television I suspect. Sarah?

backed Jim all along. I thought he was really strong in a lot of the

tasks but he's been quite conniving this week. The fact he's wriggled

out of being in the boardroom twice, he's the sort of bloke who you went

out with him and you tried to dump him, he would just say, "No."

LAUGHTER He would always be there, would he?

Yes, in the house, under me feet. Credit where it is due to you,

Vincent, you managed to come up with an exciting new name for a dog

food. That will be the name of the brand - Pals. Pal is already a name.

What does it have to do with the food. It is the second biggest dog

brand in the world, if not the first. Which does lead us naturally

on to a habit you have that we've noticed over the weeks. In context

it makes sense, but even out of context, even when it is not even

Are you worried that you do this? think I might need to get some help

for that one. It is just, you know, we just try to look smart. It's a

bit of nerves. This is a pressure cooker, this thingment people

forget when they are watching it, it is an entertainment show I think,

but you feel an intense amount of pressure. So much pressure that

even when naked you are adjusting your tie? Even when I'm naked, Dara.

Good to know. And now for the moment of truth, here are Lord

Sugar's comments. Apart from messing up the task, Vincent was

playing a bit of a game. Bonding with certain people in the process,

and bringing the wrong people into the boardroom. He comes across as

very sort of, "This was my idea, I've got a vision" but your ideas

probably came from someone else. Vincent is a dynamic manager but he

would lean on Jim a lot. Vincent is all charm and there is maybe a we

bit more gusto than substance. like straight talkers. He isn't the

sort of fellow I could go into business with, so Vincent had to go.

What's your reaction to that? don't think I delivered well enough

for him. I don't think he saw enough of potentially what I think

I'm capable of doing actually. Maybe I'm not the type of guy that

he was looking for. Let's move on to the other team. It was a good

day for Glenn. Glenn, who knows his light, that he is light... You know

what I mean. I'm better than anyone else in this process. Can I design.

Can I create. You know when you have cat's eyes on the road. The

cat's eyes on the road came from cat's eye... What's with the cat's

please. No. I think it was pretty good. The size, they've lost their,

you know, their weight. Don't mess with me. Thank you very much. See

you later. I'm going to bring everyone together. That's one of my

greatest skills. It will be alright. It will be fine. He led from if

front. He won the task. Lucky. Really? Very lucky I thought. There

were some interesting moments watching that back. For starters

saying you want to command respect without earning respect from your

team is a no, no, but what they did was they had at least thought of

the market and tried to find an angling. You guys had a lot to play

with. You could have gone premium, niche, in terms of small dog or cat.

They could have thought about cats. I was really surprised that none of

you started with the market. You all just started with the concept.

I thought he emortgaged as an absolute thicko, and frankly he

will be thrown out on his rather ridiculous ego very shortly.

saddest thing from this episode is he now will have an inflated sense

of how well he did. He didn't do well at all. It was by fact that it

was slightly less shit than the other one. LAUGHTER

You think that's in three years he will be going, "Hi, I'm Glenn, did

you see the light?, no, they are light." The vote. Debbie, back to

Vincent, do you think Lord Sugar was right to fire him? I do,

Vincent, Kelvin? Absolutely not. I think he would have done just as

well to have got rid of Natasha, because Vincent had energy and

belief, and as you've seen tonight, salesmanship. They are very rare

items. Sarah? Yes, I think so. Mainly because you bottled and

didn't bring Jim back in, even though I saw that it was loyalty to

a friend. In the earlier vote it was too close to call. You know

what to do. Fired or hired?

Less of a debate this time! You have been fired. It's been a

pleasure to have you here. Obviously we always like to give a

gift to somebody when they leave. You are almost unique at having got

this far in the show never having won a single task. And therefore

you've never had a treat. AUDIENCE: Ah. Your gift is a one-
