University Challenge

0:00:030:00:05

has been baffling students

0:00:050:00:06

and delighting audiences for the past 52 years.

0:00:060:00:10

Hello and welcome again...

0:00:100:00:12

Over 43 series, more than 1,000 teams have gone

0:00:120:00:15

head-to-head in a bid to be crowned the brightest scholars in Britain.

0:00:150:00:19

Trinity, you're the champions.

0:00:190:00:21

For the first time in the programme's history, we followed

0:00:210:00:24

the journey of the students from initial team selection...

0:00:240:00:27

And the captain of our team is James Gerbrandt.

0:00:270:00:30

..to the moment they walk onto the iconic studio floor.

0:00:310:00:33

-Fingers on the buzzers.

-Here's the first starter for ten.

0:00:330:00:37

Each year, only 28 teams qualify to compete in the televised series

0:00:370:00:41

and tonight we'll be finding out which institutions have

0:00:410:00:44

what it takes to make the grade...

0:00:440:00:46

It's sort of the calm before the storm, I guess.

0:00:460:00:48

Obviously, there's quite a lot of nerves there.

0:00:480:00:50

..and become the University Challenge class of 2014.

0:00:500:00:54

PHONE RINGS

0:00:540:00:56

-Oh, here we go.

-Oh, my God! Wah!

0:00:560:00:59

Guys!

0:00:590:01:00

Last time, we followed over 130 teams on their mission to secure

0:01:020:01:05

a coveted place in this year's series of University Challenge.

0:01:050:01:09

-They formed their strongest squad...

-ALL: Jeremy!

0:01:100:01:13

..honed their quizzing skills

0:01:130:01:16

and endured a tough audition hoping to impress the producers,

0:01:160:01:19

to bag one of those 28 places in the class of 2014.

0:01:190:01:24

Pens down, if you will.

0:01:240:01:25

-Tonight, we'll find out which teams have succeeded...

-PHONE RINGS

0:01:250:01:28

..and who will have to wait for another year.

0:01:280:01:30

Oh, my goodness!

0:01:300:01:32

Yes!

0:01:320:01:34

High-five time!

0:01:340:01:35

We'll lift the lid on how teams train to become match fit...

0:01:350:01:39

Buzz! Cheap?

0:01:390:01:40

-Mate!

-I don't know! You looked at me like I was supposed to know!

0:01:400:01:43

..reveal the face that goes with the voice of University Challenge...

0:01:430:01:46

I don't think people realise that

0:01:460:01:48

the voice-overs are done live in the studio.

0:01:480:01:50

I think they probably reckon it's edited in afterwards.

0:01:500:01:53

Trinity, Drnovsek Zorko.

0:01:530:01:55

..and we uncover the man behind the myth that is Mr Jeremy Paxman.

0:01:550:01:59

Oh, my God - there he is, there he is!

0:01:590:02:01

(Do you have any answers?)

0:02:010:02:03

Do you know, I have!

0:02:030:02:05

But I'm not going to give them to you now!

0:02:050:02:07

I hadn't realised just how low and smoky Paxo's voice is.

0:02:070:02:11

I was very impressed!

0:02:110:02:13

It's so low and hot chocolaty!

0:02:130:02:15

After a three-week audition tour, travelling to eight cities

0:02:190:02:22

and meeting over 130 teams, it's decision day

0:02:220:02:26

for the University Challenge production team.

0:02:260:02:29

They have the gruelling task of casting

0:02:290:02:31

just 28 institutions to represent the nation's student population.

0:02:310:02:35

The producers have a casting system that takes into account

0:02:350:02:38

a number of criteria.

0:02:380:02:40

We've put all our applications into categories.

0:02:400:02:43

We then concentrate on the teams that have scored best.

0:02:430:02:47

We give teams a grade - A, B, C, D,

0:02:470:02:49

depending on how well they did in their score

0:02:490:02:52

and also a combination of that

0:02:520:02:53

with how they came across in their interview with us.

0:02:530:02:55

So we have a rough threshold below which

0:02:550:02:59

we pretty much automatically discount a fair number of teams

0:02:590:03:02

and we'll lose a good 60 or so teams because of that.

0:03:020:03:05

They've got a good score, but is it good enough?

0:03:090:03:11

We've got to lose one of these, haven't we?

0:03:110:03:13

With a score like that, it's just a bit too low for us

0:03:130:03:16

to consider them, really.

0:03:160:03:17

-Now, that's a good score.

-Yeah.

0:03:190:03:21

-Agreed? BOTH:

-Yeah.

-There we go.

0:03:230:03:26

This is our final 28, guys. This is Series 21.

0:03:260:03:30

It's going to be a pretty damn good series.

0:03:300:03:33

And so the time has come.

0:03:350:03:38

Students from over 130 institutions across the nation eagerly await

0:03:380:03:42

the production team's decision.

0:03:420:03:44

Have they made the grade

0:03:440:03:46

and gained a coveted place on University Challenge?

0:03:460:03:50

Only time will tell and the nerves

0:03:500:03:53

are starting to show.

0:03:530:03:55

Don't say anything disparaging!

0:03:550:03:57

I'm feeling a bit nervous and apprehensive about things,

0:04:000:04:03

but hopefully...we'll do well.

0:04:030:04:07

It's sort of the calm before the storm, I guess.

0:04:070:04:09

There's quite a lot of nerves there.

0:04:090:04:11

Very, very nervous.

0:04:110:04:13

I can't take the pressure.

0:04:130:04:15

Last year, the interview seemed to go much better than this year

0:04:150:04:18

and we didn't get through, so I'm...

0:04:180:04:20

quietly confident,

0:04:200:04:22

but I don't know really how to gauge it!

0:04:220:04:24

Our chances of making it on are pretty high, I think!

0:04:240:04:27

My mum, though, is incredibly stressed and tense...

0:04:300:04:32

-Oh!

-She phones me up and Skypes me like, every day,

0:04:320:04:35

saying, "Have you heard yet? Have you heard?"

0:04:350:04:37

A lot of the students have wanted to be in the show for years

0:04:370:04:41

and are just so excited

0:04:410:04:43

to get on and represent their University on Uni Challenge.

0:04:430:04:46

It's an absolute privilege to work on a show

0:04:460:04:48

that garners that reaction.

0:04:480:04:49

One of the teams awaiting their fate is Trinity College, Cambridge.

0:04:520:04:55

Home to over 1,000 students,

0:04:550:04:57

Trinity is the largest of the Cambridge colleges.

0:04:570:05:01

They have been University Challenge series winners on three occasions

0:05:010:05:04

and are the current holders of the trophy.

0:05:040:05:06

Trinity, you're the champions, well done.

0:05:060:05:09

So the pressure is on this year's team to defend their title.

0:05:120:05:16

First up, third-year physicist Matthew Willetts,

0:05:170:05:20

mathematician, Michael Dunkirchen,

0:05:200:05:23

their captain, chemistry student Hugh Bennett,

0:05:230:05:27

fourth-year classicist Claire Hall

0:05:270:05:30

and mathematics student Aled Walker.

0:05:300:05:32

And so the team gather together to await the all-important phone call.

0:05:350:05:39

The nice thing is, on the test that we did, if any individual

0:05:390:05:43

member of the team gets the answer right,

0:05:430:05:45

it counts as the team getting it right, and there were quite a few

0:05:450:05:48

times throughout when I thought, "This is a really good system!"

0:05:480:05:51

"I'm not going to get this question, but someone else will. It'll be fine."

0:05:510:05:54

Anyone know any good jokes?

0:05:550:05:57

NERVOUS LAUGHTER

0:05:570:05:59

PHONE RINGS

0:06:000:06:03

-Hello?

-'Hello, Hugh?'

-Hi, hello.

0:06:030:06:06

Hi, it's Olivia calling from University Challenge.

0:06:060:06:08

'All I want to start off by saying is we have seen around 130 teams

0:06:080:06:13

'whilst we were away on tour

0:06:130:06:15

'and the calibre for this series was especially high,

0:06:150:06:19

'it was really above and beyond what we could have thought.'

0:06:190:06:22

In this instance, guys, I just want to say...

0:06:220:06:25

X Factor pause...

0:06:250:06:28

'Congratulations to all of you,

0:06:300:06:31

-'because you've made it onto the show, well done!'

-Oh, great!

0:06:310:06:35

Fantastic! That's great news.

0:06:350:06:38

'I'm glad that you're pleased.'

0:06:380:06:40

Yeah! That's brilliant, yeah. Thanks so much.

0:06:400:06:43

It's been a pleasure, we're looking forward to it. Thanks.

0:06:430:06:46

-Thanks, OK. Bye.

-'All right, Hugh, bye!'

-Bye!

0:06:460:06:50

The first 20 seconds were really emotionally manipulative,

0:06:500:06:53

like, "The quality of teams was very high...

0:06:530:06:56

-"We had a great time talking to you..."

-We were just, like...

0:06:560:07:00

"No, no, no, we're out..."

0:07:000:07:02

Well, we're thrilled about that, yeah.

0:07:020:07:05

So Trinity have achieved their goal and are set to defend their title.

0:07:050:07:10

What does all this good news actually mean for the students?

0:07:100:07:13

What have they got to look forward to

0:07:130:07:15

with their appearance on the show?

0:07:150:07:17

-Come ON!

-Sorry!

0:07:170:07:19

For many, this experience will be the start of lifelong friendships.

0:07:200:07:24

We didn't know each other beforehand,

0:07:240:07:26

I don't think we'd have met if it weren't for University Challenge,

0:07:260:07:29

but we got on well, we had a great time.

0:07:290:07:30

Quite a lot of our families came and watched us, friends and family,

0:07:300:07:34

so all our friends and family got to know each other, too.

0:07:340:07:37

We're still in touch now, which is really nice.

0:07:370:07:40

It was fun. It was really fun

0:07:400:07:43

and I really did enjoy to represent my university at something I love.

0:07:430:07:46

You just become friends, you know. They're my friends now.

0:07:490:07:53

We go out to the pubs in the week

0:07:530:07:56

and go and do a pub quiz every now and then, maybe. But... Yeah.

0:07:560:08:00

Now, it's time for Sheffield,

0:08:000:08:03

Sussex, London School of Economics and Political Science,

0:08:030:08:07

the Courtauld Institute of Art

0:08:070:08:10

and Pembroke College, Cambridge to learn their fate.

0:08:100:08:13

Ohhh! Ooh!

0:08:130:08:16

-Hello, there - is that James?

-Hi, yeah.

0:08:160:08:18

Hi, Jonathan, it's Clare here, from University Challenge.

0:08:180:08:21

We've been making our decisions over the last week or so...

0:08:210:08:24

So first of all, I want to start off by saying

0:08:240:08:27

'it was an absolute pleasure meeting you.'

0:08:270:08:30

'We've seen a huge number of teams

0:08:300:08:31

'and the standard's been really high this year.'

0:08:310:08:34

It was very difficult for us to get it down to just 28.

0:08:340:08:37

In this instance, I just want to say a massive congratulations...

0:08:370:08:41

Oh!

0:08:410:08:43

That was so mean!

0:08:440:08:45

I'm very pleased to be able to tell you that we would like to have

0:08:480:08:51

Sussex on the show this series!

0:08:510:08:52

-Really?

-Yes, really!

-Oh, wow! OK!

0:08:520:08:56

'We'd love to have you'

0:08:560:08:58

on the show this series.

0:08:580:08:59

Oh, wow - that's great news, thank you very much!

0:08:590:09:01

Oh, my goodness!

0:09:010:09:03

Oh, wow!

0:09:040:09:05

-We're on the show?

-'Yes!'

-No!

0:09:050:09:09

We're on! Are you being serious?

0:09:090:09:12

-Are you sure you got that right, yes?

-'I'm positive.'

0:09:120:09:14

I'm sorry, I'm shocked!

0:09:140:09:16

I've watched the show from when I was about five or six,

0:09:190:09:22

I've always wanted to participate.

0:09:220:09:25

Wow. I wasn't expecting that!

0:09:250:09:28

We're on!

0:09:280:09:30

-You should have been cooler about it!

-I can't be cool!

0:09:300:09:32

"Whatever. Always knew I'd be on."

0:09:320:09:36

HIGH-PITCHED: That's exciting!

0:09:360:09:38

For third-year medical student Carl Lam, it's been a long journey

0:09:410:09:44

since he single-handedly put together

0:09:440:09:46

the Churchill College, Cambridge team and now it's time to find out

0:09:460:09:50

if all the hard work has paid off.

0:09:500:09:53

Shameful!

0:09:530:09:55

Pretty nervous,

0:09:550:09:56

but it won't be the end of the world if we don't make it.

0:09:560:09:59

It WILL be the end of the world if we don't make it!

0:09:590:10:02

We HAVE to get through, basically!

0:10:020:10:05

Just get in the first round. I don't think we have aspirations to win...

0:10:050:10:08

LINE RINGS

0:10:100:10:13

-PHONE RINGS

-OK, phone call.

0:10:130:10:15

'I'm just ringing with the outcome'

0:10:150:10:17

of the application process.

0:10:170:10:19

As you know, we saw a huge number of teams this year,

0:10:190:10:22

'I think we saw well over 130. Your application'

0:10:220:10:25

was strong. We really enjoyed the interview with you

0:10:250:10:27

and you did score well on the test, but unfortunately,

0:10:270:10:30

'the standard this year in Cambridge was just so high

0:10:300:10:32

'that you guys missed the cut, I'm afraid. I'm very sorry.'

0:10:320:10:35

Thank you, no problem at all.

0:10:350:10:36

-'Thank you. Bye.'

-OK, bye.

0:10:360:10:37

That's a tough phone call to make.

0:10:400:10:41

Oh, well. Better luck.

0:10:410:10:44

We tried our best. Fair enough, the competition was really high.

0:10:440:10:48

I don't think our expectations were too high, so...

0:10:480:10:51

No, you haven't seen the last of Churchill!

0:10:510:10:53

-Back again next year, guys.

-Sounds good.

0:10:530:10:56

So, it's disappointing news for Churchill College, Cambridge,

0:10:560:10:58

but at the other end of the country,

0:10:580:11:00

is the metaphorical sun shining on the University of Manchester?

0:11:000:11:04

It's the largest single-site institution in the UK

0:11:080:11:11

and their previous teams are joint championship title holders

0:11:110:11:14

with Magdalen College, Oxford,

0:11:140:11:16

winning the series an incredible four times.

0:11:160:11:19

This year's team consists of team captain John Radcliffe

0:11:220:11:25

studying chemical engineering.

0:11:250:11:27

Charlie Rowlands a first-year genetics

0:11:270:11:30

and Chinese language student.

0:11:300:11:31

Edmund Chapman, currently reading a PhD in literature.

0:11:310:11:35

Mhairi Hindle, third-year chemistry student.

0:11:350:11:38

And Matt Stallard, a PhD student reading American studies.

0:11:380:11:42

The team has been put together by an ex-contestant turned coach,

0:11:420:11:45

Stephen Pearson, who has been prepping

0:11:450:11:47

the Manchester University entries for the last 16 years.

0:11:470:11:51

It IS Switzerland, yes, for ten points.

0:11:510:11:54

Known fondly as the Alex Ferguson of University Challenge,

0:11:540:11:57

Stephen's gathered a few of his previous squads as moral support

0:11:570:12:01

as this year's team await their fate.

0:12:010:12:03

OK, everyone - come on.

0:12:030:12:05

We've got previous team members here,

0:12:060:12:08

so hopefully they're rooting for us!

0:12:080:12:12

They want us to get on and maybe somehow that will affect

0:12:120:12:15

the outcome...

0:12:150:12:16

But if we don't get on, they'll just find it really funny!

0:12:160:12:19

They're happy either way, really, I'm sure!

0:12:190:12:21

Being that Manchester have done pretty well on it in the past,

0:12:210:12:24

I don't think that personally makes me feel any more confident.

0:12:240:12:27

I think it makes me feel more nervous,

0:12:270:12:29

because we don't want to screw it up.

0:12:290:12:31

We'd just have to walk around campus like this.

0:12:310:12:34

There have been teams in the past which have been really good

0:12:340:12:37

and haven't made it on, so I'm not counting my chickens until we know.

0:12:370:12:41

I'm nervous. I didn't think I would be, but I am.

0:12:410:12:45

Obviously, I hope they get on.

0:12:450:12:47

But you never know.

0:12:470:12:48

LINE RINGS

0:12:480:12:50

(Oh, hello.) Hello?

0:12:500:12:53

-'Hi, is that John?'

-It is, hi.

0:12:540:12:55

'Hi, John. It's Clare here from University Challenge. How are you?'

0:12:550:12:58

I'm all right thanks, how are you?

0:12:580:13:00

Not too bad, thank you.

0:13:000:13:01

'I'm very glad to be able to tell you

0:13:010:13:03

'that we would like to have Manchester on the show this year.'

0:13:030:13:06

Awesome!

0:13:060:13:07

CHEERING

0:13:070:13:10

-Thank you very much, Clare. That's good news.

-ALL: Wahey!

0:13:100:13:14

-Guys, hug time!

-Aaah!

-It's beautiful!

0:13:140:13:17

'They do take it very seriously'

0:13:170:13:19

at Manchester and it does show through in the teams.

0:13:190:13:22

Every year, they put through very strong teams

0:13:220:13:24

and these guys were no exception.

0:13:240:13:26

-Thing is, now we have to do the TV show.

-Oh, yeah.

0:13:260:13:28

-I'd forgotten about that!

-We actually have to be good, as well!

0:13:280:13:32

So, you know, we should learn stuff!

0:13:320:13:34

Yeah!

0:13:340:13:35

The moment you discover you've achieved a place on University Challenge is a time to celebrate

0:13:350:13:40

for every team...

0:13:400:13:41

and so it makes for some ear-piercing phone calls.

0:13:410:13:44

We haul the receiver away from our ears

0:13:440:13:47

because there's generally a lot of screaming and shouting and cheering.

0:13:470:13:50

-Yes!

-Yes!

0:13:500:13:53

THEY SCREAM/CHEER

0:13:530:13:58

Oh, my goodness!

0:13:580:13:59

-One of us is dancing!

-Samba-ing!

0:14:040:14:07

Sorry, we didn't hear anything you said after the "good news"!

0:14:070:14:10

Oh, for goodness' sake!

0:14:100:14:13

That was a pretty good reaction, wasn't it?

0:14:130:14:16

-We need to practise buzzer stuff though, don't we?

-We do!

0:14:160:14:19

Like, "Glover, LSHT".

0:14:190:14:21

Starter for ten!

0:14:210:14:22

All institutions with university status are welcome to

0:14:260:14:29

apply for the show.

0:14:290:14:31

For the Open University, where their students work from home

0:14:310:14:34

and are therefore spread across the entire UK,

0:14:340:14:36

this task of putting together a team is particularly hard.

0:14:360:14:40

Each individual application is fielded by Projects Officer for

0:14:400:14:44

the Students' Association, Jessica Smith, who applies on their behalf.

0:14:440:14:47

We're really hoping this year could be our year

0:14:470:14:50

because the Open University won University Challenge in 1999,

0:14:500:14:54

but 15 years on, we still haven't had a team through to the

0:14:540:14:57

televised rounds, so we're really hoping that this will be the year.

0:14:570:15:01

And she's also the one who receives the call to say

0:15:010:15:04

whether or not they've made it onto the show.

0:15:040:15:07

Here we go...

0:15:070:15:09

PHONE RINGS

0:15:090:15:10

Hello, Jessica speaking.

0:15:110:15:14

We very much enjoyed the interview that we did with them and decided

0:15:140:15:16

'that this year, we would like to put a team from the OU forward.'

0:15:160:15:20

CHEERING

0:15:200:15:21

That's been very well received, I hear!

0:15:250:15:28

-Everyone's listening in the office!

-'Lovely to speak to you, Jessica.'

0:15:280:15:33

Bye!

0:15:330:15:35

-Told you!

-Aaah!

0:15:350:15:37

APPLAUSE

0:15:370:15:39

How exciting! Wendy!

0:15:410:15:44

-We've done it!

-We knew this was our year!

0:15:450:15:48

We had the feeling in our bones, didn't we?

0:15:480:15:51

It's quite a lot of organisation,

0:15:510:15:53

coordinating all those people from across the country.

0:15:530:15:56

About 300 students put their names forward to start with

0:15:560:15:59

and to get to these five, and for them

0:15:590:16:01

to actually be through to the show, I can't quite believe it, really!

0:16:010:16:06

Edinburgh University has made more appearances on the show than

0:16:090:16:12

almost any other team, but have never bagged the championship title.

0:16:120:16:15

Hoping that this will be their year are chemistry PhD student Thomas.

0:16:210:16:27

Team captain Alex Gapud, a PhD student in social anthropology.

0:16:270:16:30

Third-year chemistry undergraduate Innis Carson.

0:16:320:16:35

Joe Curran, reading for a PhD in economic and social history...

0:16:360:16:40

and Nico Ovendon, reading a Masters in cultural studies.

0:16:400:16:44

With each university, it's the captain who is told the news

0:16:460:16:49

of the team's fate and Edinburgh is no exception.

0:16:490:16:52

So, we got an e-mail from the producers saying that

0:16:520:16:55

unfortunately, we didn't make the show, which is disappointing,

0:16:550:16:59

but I'm trying to take the positives from it.

0:16:590:17:02

Part of my resolution and determination is to,

0:17:020:17:05

in a couple of years' time, come back and not just win it all,

0:17:050:17:09

but actually instil a culture here to Edinburgh where...

0:17:090:17:14

we're the new Manchester, we're the new Magdalen College, Oxford

0:17:140:17:17

and we're actually there to compete

0:17:170:17:19

and to compete seriously as a very serious contender to win it all, every year.

0:17:190:17:24

That's something that I hope to leave behind here.

0:17:240:17:27

So it's bad news for Edinburgh,

0:17:270:17:28

but they're determined to be back next year.

0:17:280:17:31

At the end of the day, we did what we could and I don't think we embarrassed ourselves.

0:17:310:17:35

Certainly no regrets about going forward.

0:17:350:17:37

Didn't work out this time, but maybe in the future it will, so...

0:17:370:17:40

I think sooner or later,

0:17:400:17:42

the right team will come to just carry Edinburgh to the glory.

0:17:420:17:46

Back in the production office, the yeses are coming thick and fast.

0:17:480:17:52

PHONE RINGS

0:17:540:17:56

-Oh, here we go.

-Oh, my God!

-Guys!

0:17:560:17:59

I just wanted to say congratulations, because you've made it onto the show! Well done.

0:17:590:18:05

Excellent. Love her.

0:18:050:18:06

That's excellent news!

0:18:060:18:07

Congratulations, you're going to be on the next series of the show!

0:18:070:18:11

-Aah!

-Blimey!

0:18:110:18:14

-Yes!

-We're on!

0:18:140:18:16

-That's pretty cool!

-It is, yes!

0:18:190:18:22

You've made five geeks very, very happy!

0:18:220:18:24

High-five time!

0:18:250:18:27

Well done, guys!

0:18:290:18:31

Oh, my God...

0:18:310:18:33

-Thought that was a fail!

-My heart is racing!

0:18:340:18:37

One institution desperate to gain a place on this year's series

0:18:430:18:46

are Magdalen College, Oxford...

0:18:460:18:48

four times University Challenge champions, with a lot to prove.

0:18:480:18:53

This year's team hoping to continue the college's illustrious

0:18:560:18:59

history are...

0:18:590:19:01

third-year chemist Chris Savory.

0:19:010:19:03

French and philosophy student, Cameron Quinn.

0:19:040:19:09

Captain and chemistry student Hugh Binnie.

0:19:090:19:12

Fourth-year classicist Harry Gillow.

0:19:120:19:15

And Tom Mackenzie,

0:19:160:19:17

reading a PhD in classical languages and literature.

0:19:170:19:21

And knowing they have a lot to live up to, the team is starting

0:19:210:19:25

to get nervous as they wait to hear the news.

0:19:250:19:27

I thought we did quite well at the interview.

0:19:310:19:33

But then, I thought we did quite well last year,

0:19:330:19:36

-and we didn't get on.

-I thought I did terribly on that test.

0:19:360:19:39

I think we're a strong team and that SHOULD be all that counts,

0:19:390:19:43

but there are of course extenuating circumstances.

0:19:430:19:46

The fact that we're all sort of white and middle-class and male...

0:19:460:19:50

A bit boring!

0:19:500:19:52

-Currently, I have three signals.

-That should be fine.

0:19:530:19:56

-No, four signals out of five.

-Oh, wow - luxury.

0:19:560:19:59

I thought my signals were only...

0:19:590:20:01

Oh, no, now it's down to three signals out of five. How exciting.

0:20:010:20:05

PHONE RINGS

0:20:050:20:07

-Hello? Hello.

-'As you know,'

0:20:070:20:10

we're getting to around that time where we're telling

0:20:100:20:14

'people whether they're on or not and it's incredibly tight, but that just

0:20:140:20:18

'makes it all the gladder for me to say that you're on the team this year...'

0:20:180:20:22

We're going to be on?

0:20:220:20:24

'You're going to be on, congratulations.'

0:20:240:20:26

That's fantastic! Good news. Thanks for telling us.

0:20:260:20:29

We'll do our best to represent Magdalen well.

0:20:290:20:31

Yeeeeeeeeeeah!

0:20:310:20:34

Sh! Sh!

0:20:340:20:36

-I guess we'd better start practising.

-Yeah.

-Nerve-racking.

0:20:360:20:40

UNIVERSITY CHALLENGE THEME PLAYS

0:20:400:20:42

So, the 28 teams have received the welcome call to say they've

0:20:420:20:45

secured a place on the show.

0:20:450:20:47

Now, the hard work really begins and on University Challenge,

0:20:470:20:51

that means preparing for the toughest quiz in Britain.

0:20:510:20:56

You probably can prepare an awful lot for the show, by practising.

0:20:560:21:01

We were all people who were generally interested

0:21:010:21:03

in doing quizzes.

0:21:030:21:04

We'd done things like pub quizzes

0:21:040:21:06

a little bit together.

0:21:060:21:07

Oxford has an intercollegiate quiz tournament with some battered

0:21:070:21:11

old buzzers that they send around, so we'd done a little bit

0:21:110:21:14

of that against teams from elsewhere in Oxford.

0:21:140:21:17

The union had a quiz, I think every Sunday night and

0:21:170:21:20

I think we went along to that once or twice and didn't do that well!

0:21:200:21:24

This year's students are continuing the hard work

0:21:260:21:29

of their predecessors, prepping for those killer questions.

0:21:290:21:32

Up in Scotland, the University of St Andrews are holding

0:21:360:21:39

one of their regular practices in the common room.

0:21:390:21:41

In terms of preparation for the show,

0:21:410:21:43

the team...we've been practising going through questions,

0:21:430:21:46

trying to emulate the studio environment as closely as possible.

0:21:460:21:50

OK, so three bonus questions on human capacity.

0:21:500:21:53

'We've been trying to have one person ask the rest of us questions'

0:21:530:21:57

in a sort of Paxman-esque manner!

0:21:570:21:59

Um...

0:21:590:22:01

but it's difficult, it really is.

0:22:010:22:03

OK, starter for ten, on the buzzers, please.

0:22:030:22:06

What is the lowest positive integer to contain the letter C

0:22:060:22:09

when it is spelt out as a word in English?

0:22:090:22:12

Good God. Er...

0:22:130:22:15

The history of St Andrews in the show is an interesting one.

0:22:150:22:19

We won it once. Two years ago was the last time the team got through

0:22:190:22:22

to the televised rounds and they were knocked out ignominiously

0:22:220:22:25

by Bangor, so we want to do better than them this time round.

0:22:250:22:29

What name for a bivalve mollusc of the genus pecten,

0:22:290:22:32

and for its distinctive shell, also denotes thin slices of meat or fish,

0:22:320:22:36

-often dusted with flour and sauteed.

-Scallop.

-Yeah.

0:22:360:22:40

It's scallop.

0:22:400:22:42

We feel like St Andrews has underperformed considering its

0:22:420:22:45

academic standing and I think it's our job this year to right that.

0:22:450:22:49

I think if we won and we brought the trophy back to St Andrews for

0:22:490:22:53

the first time in 31 years,

0:22:530:22:55

they'd probably put on a procession for us!

0:22:550:22:57

-I'm not actually lying when I say that!

-I'd like to think so, yes!

0:22:570:23:00

I think we'd be wheeled through town on a float!

0:23:000:23:04

Over 400 miles south of St Andrews,

0:23:040:23:06

the Oxford Brookes team are working to a strict training regime.

0:23:060:23:10

Well, we try and practise twice a week

0:23:100:23:12

and so we do past questions.

0:23:120:23:14

I read Dickens in one night

0:23:140:23:17

and Shakespeare in kind of one and a half nights.

0:23:170:23:20

I'm reading the summaries,

0:23:200:23:21

which is helping me with the ones I don't know as well.

0:23:210:23:24

We're trying to cram in as many sessions as we can

0:23:240:23:26

over the next couple of weeks.

0:23:260:23:28

As a consequence of the belief that it was brought to

0:23:280:23:31

Europe by the Crusaders, Syrah,

0:23:310:23:33

the red wine grape of the Rhone Valley, shares its English name

0:23:330:23:36

with which city in Iran?

0:23:360:23:38

-Shiraz.

-Yep.

0:23:380:23:41

For so many years,

0:23:410:23:42

we've been sitting at home watching it on the telly, where it's all

0:23:420:23:45

very easy and you can just make as many guesses as you like and think

0:23:450:23:49

you're a bit of a legend whilst you're sitting in your own lounge.

0:23:490:23:52

Paxman doesn't scare you from across a TV, does he?

0:23:520:23:55

Now we know we're actually going to be there

0:23:550:23:57

in front of the lights and camera and having to do it for real,

0:23:570:24:00

it's all a bit surreal.

0:24:000:24:01

It's the single word that completes this statement.

0:24:010:24:04

But what is it about University Challenge's questions

0:24:040:24:08

that make them so incredibly hard and unique?

0:24:080:24:10

Reifler, Von Sterneck, compensating,

0:24:100:24:13

torsion and Foucault...

0:24:130:24:15

BELL

0:24:150:24:17

-Pendulum.

-Correct.

0:24:170:24:19

The questions have some specific characteristics.

0:24:190:24:22

There's something that we on the production team

0:24:220:24:25

call inherent interest.

0:24:250:24:27

We like the question to be interesting in itself,

0:24:270:24:29

so even if you don't know the answer, when you hear the answer you think,

0:24:290:24:32

"Hm, that's interesting," not, "So what?"

0:24:320:24:34

For heaven's sake, there's enough quizzes on television

0:24:340:24:37

full of stupid questions.

0:24:370:24:39

The questions here are difficult

0:24:390:24:40

and they're intentionally difficult,

0:24:400:24:43

and so the people who can answer them know a lot.

0:24:430:24:46

That's the point of the show.

0:24:460:24:48

In March 2006, which newly formed party led by Ehud Olmert...

0:24:480:24:52

BUZZER

0:24:520:24:53

-Kadima.

-Kadima is right.

0:24:530:24:56

My mum said to me when I came off it,

0:24:560:24:58

I was saying, "I can't believe I didn't get this or that one right,

0:24:580:25:01

and she said, "I don't even understand the questions.

0:25:010:25:04

"Don't beat yourself up about not knowing the answer."

0:25:040:25:07

No matter how hard the teams may study,

0:25:070:25:10

their answers don't always come from textbooks.

0:25:100:25:13

10 points for this. The elements

0:25:130:25:15

with the atomic numbers 79, 47 and 82

0:25:150:25:18

are used to determine the suitability

0:25:180:25:20

of a young woman's suitors in which play by...

0:25:200:25:24

BELL

0:25:240:25:25

-The Merchant Of Venice.

-Indeed - the gold, silver and lead caskets.

0:25:250:25:29

The things you know are not just exactly things you've read

0:25:290:25:32

or things you've studied but things you've come across on holiday

0:25:320:25:35

with friends and family, and so you do sort of see your life flashing before your eyes.

0:25:350:25:39

When we went up to Manchester on the train from Cambridge,

0:25:390:25:42

we'd been travelling a couple of hours

0:25:420:25:44

and somebody looked out the window and said, "Look at that bent church spire!"

0:25:440:25:48

Somebody else said, "That must be Chesterfield. It's got a bent church spire."

0:25:480:25:51

Somebody else said, "Isn't that a kind of sofa?" "Oh, yes."

0:25:510:25:54

Lo and behold, the first match we were in, the starter was about

0:25:540:25:57

the connection between a particular kind of sofa and a church with a bent spire,

0:25:570:26:00

so the answer was Chesterfield and one of us buzzed in and got it

0:26:000:26:03

so, now and then, life intervenes and gives you an answer,

0:26:030:26:06

but mostly, it's things that you know already.

0:26:060:26:09

Over at the board game cafe, St Anne's College are testing the grey matter

0:26:090:26:14

with a lively quiz.

0:26:140:26:15

Tonight, we're doing a quiz and the goal is largely to identify

0:26:150:26:20

the strengths and weaknesses of the different people on the team,

0:26:200:26:23

and also to see what areas we can revise and improve on

0:26:230:26:26

for the future.

0:26:260:26:28

The first European to explore the area was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo...

0:26:280:26:33

St Anne's has about 750 students in its population,

0:26:330:26:37

graduate and undergraduate, and we're going up against universities

0:26:370:26:40

like Manchester, who have 40,000 students to draw from.

0:26:400:26:43

It's a bit intimidating.

0:26:430:26:45

I think expectations are quite low.

0:26:450:26:47

Our getting on is seen as a great achievement in itself,

0:26:470:26:50

so anything we can do and go further is a bonus.

0:26:500:26:53

Working drawings were completed by Shreve, Lamb & Harmon Architects

0:26:530:26:57

in just two weeks.

0:26:570:26:59

The Empire State Building.

0:26:590:27:01

-Yes.

-Yes!

0:27:010:27:03

I mean, so far I've just dreamed of being on University Challenge.

0:27:050:27:09

I wasn't aiming too high.

0:27:090:27:12

So I'm happy just to be on it.

0:27:120:27:14

Winning would be...

0:27:140:27:16

Yeah, beyond anything I've ever thought about.

0:27:160:27:20

With less than two weeks until studio,

0:27:200:27:23

the University of Sheffield team have a more laid-back

0:27:230:27:26

approach to practice.

0:27:260:27:27

I've been told Gail Trimble had toast every morning

0:27:270:27:30

on her way to University Challenge,

0:27:300:27:32

so if that works for her, it works for me. ..No, Alfie.

0:27:320:27:36

It's our first meeting as a team since the interviews

0:27:370:27:40

and we're going to answer some practice questions.

0:27:400:27:43

I think we'll probably terrify ourselves.

0:27:430:27:46

Give the common names of the following plants and animals,

0:27:460:27:48

each of which is a homophone...

0:27:480:27:50

Sorry. ..Each of which is a homophone of a name of... Uh!

0:27:500:27:54

..Of the name of a letter... These are really difficult to say!

0:27:540:27:57

So, how are Sheffield feeling about their chances?

0:27:570:28:01

Coming up against the likes of Oxford, Cambridge,

0:28:010:28:05

the traditionally very highly regarded universities,

0:28:050:28:08

is perhaps a little daunting,

0:28:080:28:10

but I'd like to think that Sheffield

0:28:100:28:12

have someone who can throw in everyone

0:28:120:28:15

and we've got a real good chance.

0:28:150:28:17

We've got nothing to lose. If we lose, that's what people expected.

0:28:170:28:20

But if we win, that's really good.

0:28:200:28:22

Which farm animal was once known in Ireland

0:28:220:28:24

-as "the gentleman who pays the rent"?

-Sheep?

0:28:240:28:28

-No!

-I don't know. You're looking at me like I'm supposed to know.

0:28:280:28:31

Pig!

0:28:310:28:33

Which traditional British confectionary item is named after Parma

0:28:330:28:36

although it's connection with the city is remote?

0:28:360:28:39

-Nominate Greenwood.

-Parma violets.

-Correct.

0:28:390:28:42

THEY LAUGH

0:28:420:28:43

Oh, yeah. We're going to win!

0:28:430:28:46

For the last couple of years

0:28:460:28:48

we hadn't qualified for the show at all,

0:28:480:28:50

so we've done better than that.

0:28:500:28:52

We're improving already.

0:28:520:28:55

What we've really got to think about is,

0:28:550:28:57

what we're going to do if we get the question right.

0:28:570:29:00

-Do a Mexican wave across the team.

-Yeah.

0:29:000:29:02

How many sides does a triangle have?

0:29:020:29:05

Buzz. Sheffield, Cunliffe. Three.

0:29:050:29:07

-Yeah.

-Yeah!

0:29:070:29:09

THEY ALL LAUGH

0:29:090:29:11

The Sheffield team might be concentrating on their celebrations

0:29:140:29:17

but it's not just about answering the questions correctly.

0:29:170:29:20

It's also about technique on the buzzer.

0:29:200:29:23

-Poetry.

-Poetry is correct.

0:29:230:29:26

I think, when you watch it on telly,

0:29:260:29:28

you don't fully appreciate the importance of the buzzers, the speed.

0:29:280:29:31

Warwick, Christodoulou.

0:29:310:29:33

Zip.

0:29:330:29:34

You could know the answer to every question

0:29:340:29:38

and feasibly end up with no marks, no points,

0:29:380:29:40

because if you don't get to the buzzer in time,

0:29:400:29:43

you don't get the marks for that and, crucially,

0:29:430:29:45

you don't get the opportunity to have a go on the bonuses.

0:29:450:29:48

The technique, really, is to press the buzzer

0:29:480:29:51

when you know that you know the answer

0:29:510:29:53

or think that you know the answer,

0:29:530:29:56

before you've actually reeled it back from the memory fully.

0:29:560:30:00

It's as though your mind starts saying, "Wait a second.

0:30:000:30:03

"I think I might know this." You hear a word or something

0:30:030:30:05

so you buzz and then you've got the time where Roger Tilling says,

0:30:050:30:08

"Manchester, Mitchell," to go through your brain as fast as you can

0:30:080:30:12

and find the answer.

0:30:120:30:13

It's a matter of not minding making a fool of yourself,

0:30:130:30:16

which I have done on occasions.

0:30:160:30:18

-Beyond credibility?

-No.

0:30:180:30:21

-LAUGHTER

-Much simpler - bad character.

0:30:210:30:25

I'm not sure there's a knack, but there must be, I guess.

0:30:250:30:28

I think it's something along the likes of

0:30:280:30:30

knowing what point to buzz, yeah,

0:30:300:30:32

and I don't have a formula.

0:30:320:30:35

It was just kind of an instinct,

0:30:350:30:37

because basically your brain will tell you

0:30:370:30:40

that you know the answer seconds before it's found it.

0:30:400:30:44

"I pressed the fire control

0:30:440:30:45

"and ahead of me rockets blazed through the sky."

0:30:450:30:48

These words appear in which 1963 painting...

0:30:480:30:51

Is it Whaam! ?

0:30:510:30:53

Whaam! is correct, yes.

0:30:530:30:55

And more often than not, you will find it. But often you won't and you look a charlie.

0:30:550:30:59

BUZZER

0:30:590:31:01

Floating voter.

0:31:010:31:03

No. One of you buzz from Magdalen.

0:31:030:31:05

So, the secret of Victory is timing and speed,

0:31:050:31:07

but according to those who've achieved success on the show

0:31:070:31:10

it's not just speed on the buzzer,

0:31:100:31:12

it's also about the way you press it.

0:31:120:31:14

The University Challenge buzzers are kind of large and flat

0:31:140:31:18

and they only buzz downwards.

0:31:180:31:20

BUZZER

0:31:200:31:22

Onan.

0:31:220:31:23

There's a certain amount of give in the buzzer

0:31:230:31:26

and you have to work out where that is

0:31:260:31:28

so if you react a little quicker than the opposition,

0:31:280:31:31

you're already halfway down on the buzzer.

0:31:310:31:33

It's not sounding but you just have that slight advantage.

0:31:330:31:36

BUZZER

0:31:360:31:37

With just over ten days until studio,

0:31:390:31:41

there's plenty of buzzer practice still to do,

0:31:410:31:44

and over at Magdalen College, Oxford,

0:31:440:31:46

the team are taking it very seriously

0:31:460:31:48

as a loss now could prove catastrophic to team morale.

0:31:480:31:52

We're having our first intercollegiate quiz match tonight.

0:31:520:31:55

We're playing Queen's College and, hopefully, it'll go well.

0:31:550:31:59

So the intercollegiate quiz is a tournament that's held

0:31:590:32:03

between the various colleges within Oxford.

0:32:030:32:05

We usually get a good turnout.

0:32:050:32:07

This year we've got 32 teams playing.

0:32:070:32:09

People use the quiz as a chance to practise for University Challenge.

0:32:090:32:13

It's pretty prestigious in its own right

0:32:130:32:16

but, basically, teams want to see this as an opportunity

0:32:160:32:19

to get some practice in before they appear on the show.

0:32:190:32:22

BEEPING We have buzzers set up, just like University Challenge.

0:32:220:32:25

It's basically exactly the same thing

0:32:250:32:27

but without Jeremy Paxman and without Roger Tilling.

0:32:270:32:30

At Manchester University,

0:32:300:32:34

team coach Stephen Pearson is ensuring the team stick to

0:32:340:32:37

their strict training regime.

0:32:370:32:39

We've got a practice match that Stephen's arranged.

0:32:390:32:42

We'll be playing against some of the previous

0:32:420:32:44

famous faces from Manchester.

0:32:440:32:47

We're playing against previous champions, so they are good,

0:32:470:32:50

and when you can beat them, you know you must know your stuff.

0:32:500:32:55

BELL

0:32:550:32:57

BUZZER

0:32:570:32:59

On my team tonight, we've got our normal University Challenge team

0:32:590:33:03

so it's me, Cameron, Chris and Harry.

0:33:030:33:06

Hopefully, we'll be able to put in a good performance

0:33:060:33:08

and get ourselves feeling confident before recording in Salford.

0:33:080:33:12

This is the first time we've played together as a full team

0:33:120:33:15

so it'll be good to see if our dynamic is positive or negative.

0:33:150:33:18

I'm sure it'll be fine,

0:33:180:33:20

but just to make sure everything's working smoothly.

0:33:200:33:24

Fingers on buzzers. Here's your first starter for 10.

0:33:240:33:28

What is the smallest country in Europe

0:33:280:33:31

whose English name ends in "land"?

0:33:310:33:33

-Manchester, Rowlands.

-Thailand.

-No.

0:33:330:33:36

The plan to steal 4 million of Chinese gold in this film

0:33:360:33:39

originates in the man who died in a Lamborghini Miura.

0:33:390:33:42

-The Italian Job.

-Yeah.

0:33:420:33:44

Four countries border both India and China.

0:33:440:33:46

One is Burma. Name two... Rowlands?

0:33:460:33:49

-Bhutan and Nepal.

-Correct, yes.

0:33:490:33:51

In this country, whose highest point is name for a former leader

0:33:510:33:55

of the Cheka, is home to the Berezina River?

0:33:550:33:58

BUZZER

0:33:580:34:00

-Ukraine.

-No.

0:34:000:34:02

..South Korea.

0:34:020:34:04

BUZZER

0:34:060:34:07

Coriolanus.

0:34:090:34:10

-Very good.

-Oh, wow.

0:34:100:34:12

No conferring.

0:34:120:34:13

I've got absolutely no idea.

0:34:170:34:19

We've just hit the 26-minute mark there and at end of the match...

0:34:190:34:22

Final score is Queen's 60, Magdalen 340.

0:34:220:34:25

And the scores are 240 to the Oxford Uni team,

0:34:250:34:28

145 to Manchester.

0:34:280:34:30

-It was all right.

-The opposition were pretty good.

0:34:330:34:36

That's the toughest team we've played against yet.

0:34:360:34:39

They were on form.

0:34:390:34:41

So Manchester have lost out to the opposition

0:34:410:34:43

and will want to take time to reassess their game.

0:34:430:34:46

Magdalen have enjoyed an emphatic win

0:34:460:34:49

so their confidence remains intact.

0:34:490:34:51

I think we were a bit jumpier than we needed to be in that last game.

0:34:510:34:55

There were ones we got wrong

0:34:550:34:56

where I guess if we'd waited a bit longer

0:34:560:34:58

we could have got it right before the other team got in.

0:34:580:35:01

There were one or two where I wasn't thinking at all

0:35:010:35:04

I probably should have waited before I buzzed.

0:35:040:35:07

I need to practise buzzing, full stop.

0:35:070:35:10

-I think we're on the right track now.

-Yes.

0:35:100:35:13

It's going to be just us and Paxo.

0:35:130:35:16

LAUGHTER

0:35:160:35:18

-AS ROGER TILLING:

-Reading the questions, Jeremy Paxman.

0:35:180:35:21

Answering them, Magdalen College, Oxford.

0:35:210:35:23

Jeremy might be getting a bit worried at this point.

0:35:230:35:26

I love you, Jeremy!

0:35:260:35:29

Over the decades,

0:35:340:35:35

students have looked to a variety of furry creatures

0:35:350:35:38

and strange talismen to bring them luck on the show.

0:35:380:35:41

This year is no different.

0:35:410:35:44

These two beavers are team mascots.

0:35:440:35:46

They are the emblem of St Anne's College,

0:35:460:35:48

and many people think it's funny that a beaver is associated with

0:35:480:35:51

a former women's college, but in 1913,

0:35:510:35:55

it was adopted to represent the industriousness

0:35:550:35:57

of the female students who would go out and take tutorials

0:35:570:36:00

at other colleges and come back to the hostels where they all lived.

0:36:000:36:03

I think they're quite cute.

0:36:030:36:05

And what have St Andrews got to offer?

0:36:050:36:08

We haven't made a decision on the mascot yet

0:36:080:36:11

but we have reached some consensus on a team costume of sorts,

0:36:110:36:14

as modelled here by lovely assistant Lewis.

0:36:140:36:17

This is our university undergraduate gown

0:36:170:36:19

and we're the only university in Europe to still have one

0:36:190:36:22

and so we really think this'll set us apart.

0:36:220:36:26

-Looks great.

-Yeah, looks fantastic.

0:36:260:36:28

There's a system of wearing it.

0:36:280:36:30

If you were a first year, you'd wear it up here.

0:36:300:36:33

We call this the academic striptease, as the gown lowers.

0:36:330:36:36

So you have first year, then second year

0:36:360:36:38

it drops back onto the shoulders. Third year you're faced with the dilemma.

0:36:380:36:42

If you're in arts you wear it off the left.

0:36:420:36:44

If you're in science you wear it off the right.

0:36:440:36:47

By your fourth and final year, you have it round your elbows,

0:36:470:36:50

and you've fully emerged. That's the idea.

0:36:500:36:52

It's very unique and makes St Andrews kind of stand out.

0:36:520:36:56

Of course, there's more than one way to make your team stand out.

0:36:560:37:00

The stegosaurus I impulse bought in a junk shop.

0:37:000:37:04

The shop assistant and I did have a moment of,

0:37:040:37:07

"Why is this so overpriced?"

0:37:070:37:09

but now I've got it I'm hoping it might make it on as the team mascot.

0:37:090:37:12

I'm yet to persuade the others.

0:37:120:37:14

And the University of Sheffield team are also still to decide

0:37:140:37:17

about their mascot.

0:37:170:37:19

Alfie the cat would make a wonderful mascot

0:37:190:37:22

but you would never get him to sit still for half an hour.

0:37:220:37:25

Why don't you bring that little pink monkey that you sleep with?

0:37:250:37:29

-LAUGHTER

-That's true.

0:37:290:37:31

-That's not even a joke.

-I can go and get him.

0:37:310:37:34

This is Schweetheart, my little monkey.

0:37:340:37:38

He's probably my best friend. I sleep with him every night.

0:37:380:37:41

I'm not sure how impressed people would be

0:37:410:37:44

if he was chosen as our mascot for the TV!

0:37:440:37:47

It's the countdown to studio, and with just two days to go,

0:37:500:37:54

there's a problem at the University of Manchester.

0:37:540:37:57

Yes, that's right. OK. Thank you.

0:37:570:37:59

Thanks. Bye-bye.

0:37:590:38:01

We've heard today that Mhairi was unfortunately had to withdraw

0:38:010:38:05

for the role of being reserve team member

0:38:050:38:07

because of a family bereavement

0:38:070:38:09

so what I've done, I've gone back to the people

0:38:090:38:12

who just narrowly missed out on selection for the team

0:38:120:38:15

when I did the original selection process,

0:38:150:38:18

and I've chosen one of them to be the reserve team member.

0:38:180:38:21

-This is our new reserve. This is James.

-Hi.

0:38:210:38:24

And the lucky lad is 3rd-year maths and physics student James Haughton.

0:38:240:38:28

When I woke up this morning, I was thinking of my exam results

0:38:280:38:31

and the Manchester United game.

0:38:310:38:34

I wasn't thinking at all that I'd be part of this now.

0:38:340:38:38

But it's a very pleasant surprise.

0:38:380:38:41

However late it is in the day, James discovers that every student

0:38:410:38:44

who applies to be on University Challenge

0:38:440:38:47

has to take a written test and be interviewed by the show's producers.

0:38:470:38:50

They also have to prove that they are eligible.

0:38:500:38:53

Yeah, so that one's fine.

0:38:530:38:55

The producers said they were happy with my score in the test

0:38:550:38:59

and that I'd be acceptable to have as a reserve.

0:38:590:39:02

So, fingers on buzzers,

0:39:020:39:05

and here's your first starter for 10.

0:39:050:39:06

It's our last practice today. It's good timing for James

0:39:060:39:10

because he just found out this afternoon

0:39:100:39:12

and he's been able to come in for the practice.

0:39:120:39:15

So we get to know his areas of knowledge and that kind of thing.

0:39:150:39:19

Just one question. What's my fee for doing this?!

0:39:190:39:23

Get you a pint!

0:39:230:39:25

Don't say that. We'll have to buy him a pint.

0:39:250:39:28

Finally, the day that all our teams have dreamed off has arrived,

0:39:330:39:36

their once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to appear on Britain's

0:39:360:39:39

longest-running and most-respected quiz show,

0:39:390:39:42

University Challenge.

0:39:420:39:44

After six months of planning, auditioning, swotting and quizzing,

0:39:440:39:48

the teams make their way to Salford's Media City.

0:39:480:39:52

This is me, Rosie Thomas,

0:39:520:39:54

the captain of the Brasenose University Challenge team.

0:39:540:39:57

I'm just about to set off on the train journey up to Manchester

0:39:570:40:01

to film University Challenge.

0:40:010:40:03

So we're at Leuchars station now, waiting for the train down...

0:40:030:40:08

to Manchester via Edinburgh

0:40:080:40:11

to meet our destiny.

0:40:110:40:13

Just leaving Sheffield.

0:40:130:40:15

The beautiful Peak District.

0:40:150:40:18

Here's team captain Jonathan Cunliffe.

0:40:180:40:21

Ohh-oh-oh.

0:40:210:40:23

Are you excited by the tram ride?

0:40:240:40:26

We've got two members of the team from last year,

0:40:260:40:29

Turner and Ben,

0:40:290:40:31

who have come to wish us luck as we head off to the train station.

0:40:310:40:36

So...

0:40:360:40:38

Good luck.

0:40:380:40:40

They've asked me to start filming you guys.

0:40:400:40:43

LAUGHTER AND CHATTER

0:40:430:40:46

We're the team from Leicester.

0:40:460:40:49

We're on our way up to Salford for University Challenge

0:40:490:40:52

-and we're all feeling pretty good about it.

-Yay!

0:40:520:40:55

THEY ALL LAUGH

0:40:550:40:58

So we're on the train and we've finally found Russ,

0:41:000:41:04

and Gwen's just doing a last-minute bit of revision.

0:41:040:41:08

And Russ has a couple of questions from previous years,

0:41:080:41:12

-and Louise is here as well.

-I feel really self conscious...

0:41:120:41:15

about how we feel about being on the show.

0:41:150:41:18

So perhaps some questions should be asked,

0:41:180:41:21

thrown out by the mysterious voice of Alex over there.

0:41:210:41:23

-Are you guys having fun back there?

-Never better.

0:41:230:41:27

-How are you feeling, John?

-I'm feeling good.

0:41:270:41:29

I'm feeling ready to smash it.

0:41:290:41:31

-I'm really nervous.

-I'm also pretty nervous.

0:41:310:41:35

-Where are we, boys?

-Salford.

0:41:370:41:40

What's the song called?

0:41:440:41:46

This song is Winner Takes It All by Abba.

0:41:460:41:50

# The winner takes it all

0:41:500:41:53

# The loser standing small... #

0:41:530:41:57

While the Pembroke College, Cambridge team

0:41:570:41:59

use their journey to practise their singing,

0:41:590:42:03

Trinity College, Cambridge take the opportunity to do some

0:42:030:42:06

last-minute cramming.

0:42:060:42:08

-C Day-Lewis - is he actually related to Daniel Day-Lewis?

-Ooh, must be.

0:42:090:42:13

We're about two hours away from filming the actual show itself

0:42:150:42:19

so it's a last-minute chance to learn a few things

0:42:190:42:22

that will definitely not come up

0:42:220:42:24

-because we revised them at the last minute!

-Yeah.

0:42:240:42:27

We found, doing past questions,

0:42:270:42:28

that lots of weird questions about dartboards came up,

0:42:280:42:31

about words you can make round a dartboard

0:42:310:42:34

if you interpret the numbers as letters.

0:42:340:42:36

So we've drawn a dartboard

0:42:360:42:38

and we're working out what words you can actually make.

0:42:380:42:41

Is it 50 for a bull and 25 for...

0:42:410:42:43

-What's that?

-I've never played darts in my life.

0:42:430:42:45

The one thing that we've never really revised

0:42:450:42:49

is the picture rounds

0:42:490:42:50

and so I thought somebody should try to just brush up, quickly,

0:42:500:42:54

on just being able to have a chance of recognising artists.

0:42:540:42:57

Definitely, the main thing is going to be to enjoy this.

0:43:000:43:04

It's great fun to be part of University Challenge,

0:43:040:43:07

to get ourselves on TV with Jeremy asking us the questions

0:43:070:43:10

-and stuff.

-The limelight!

0:43:100:43:12

I get these kind of dreams that I'll butt in

0:43:120:43:15

when I think I've got the right answer, and then it's wrong

0:43:150:43:18

and I get chastised by Paxman, it's really embarrassing.

0:43:180:43:21

I don't want it to happen for real.

0:43:210:43:23

And that's one dream that Aled doesn't want to come true

0:43:230:43:26

as, like most contestants before him,

0:43:260:43:29

the thought of facing Jeremy Paxman sends a shiver down the spine.

0:43:290:43:32

-If you buzz in, you've got to answer!

-Blah!

-Let's have it, please.

0:43:320:43:36

-We don't know.

-You've hopped round every century except the right one. It's William III.

0:43:360:43:40

LAUGHTER

0:43:400:43:42

This is going to be a long night.

0:43:420:43:44

We think University Challenge is a unique programme

0:43:440:43:47

so you do need a unique presenter.

0:43:470:43:50

Jeremy, to me, fills the role perfectly

0:43:500:43:52

and I think for a lot of our students competing,

0:43:520:43:55

the chance of coming up against him

0:43:550:43:57

-is something to be relished not feared.

-Someone buzz from Cardiff.

0:43:570:44:01

-Prince Philip.

-Prince Philip is right.

0:44:010:44:03

I don't know why you equivocated so long. No-one else comes to mind.

0:44:030:44:06

An Indochina war.

0:44:060:44:08

-AN Indochina war(?)

-Sorry, THE Indo-Chinese War.

0:44:080:44:11

That's not specific enough. There are lots of wars in Indochina.

0:44:110:44:13

Quickly, come on.

0:44:130:44:15

No, I wouldn't say I was aware of my reputation...

0:44:150:44:18

for good or bad, and, frankly, I'd rather keep it that way.

0:44:180:44:22

I seem to remember him being quite grumpy at the time,

0:44:220:44:26

definitely quite challenging.

0:44:260:44:27

Which band's single, entitled The Reflex, reached number one

0:44:270:44:30

in the British Charts in 1984?

0:44:300:44:32

-Frankie Goes To Hollywood.

-No, it was Duran Duran.

-Oh, no!

0:44:320:44:35

LAUGHTER

0:44:350:44:37

Serves you right.

0:44:370:44:38

To be berated by Paxman on screen is really a badge of honour,

0:44:380:44:41

something to be proud of and a memory to be cherished.

0:44:410:44:44

One player who wasn't afraid to interrupt the mighty Paxo at work

0:44:440:44:48

and risk a 5-point penalty was Ralph Morley,

0:44:480:44:51

captain of reigning champions, Trinity College, Cambridge.

0:44:510:44:54

Paxman was midway through a sentence,

0:44:540:44:56

we had no idea what he was going to say next, and Ralph buzzed in.

0:44:560:44:59

During the 20th century, who held the position of Prime Minister

0:44:590:45:02

of the United Kingdom...

0:45:020:45:04

Margaret Thatcher.

0:45:040:45:06

How did you know I was going to ask for the longest period of time?

0:45:060:45:09

Well, what else is it going to be?

0:45:090:45:12

When the college watched that moment, uproarious laughter,

0:45:120:45:15

because someone had stood up to Paxman. It felt fantastic.

0:45:150:45:18

OK, let's see if you get these bonuses right.

0:45:180:45:21

They're on French land borders, you smartarses!

0:45:210:45:25

LAUGHTER

0:45:250:45:26

'I like a bit of spirit.'

0:45:260:45:28

I like students, you know.

0:45:280:45:31

I love their... I love their enthusiasm.

0:45:310:45:34

The best of them, they don't take it too seriously

0:45:340:45:38

but want to do well.

0:45:380:45:40

I like them.

0:45:400:45:42

What is the most populous French department?

0:45:420:45:45

Lille...

0:45:450:45:46

-Lille.

-No, it's Nord.

0:45:460:45:49

Not all so easy, are they?

0:45:490:45:51

Not all of them. JEREMY LAUGHS

0:45:510:45:54

The students finally descend upon Salford's Media City,

0:45:540:45:58

and as one journey ends, another begins.

0:45:580:46:01

I think University Challenge being done in the studios will be

0:46:010:46:04

a bit intimidating, under the lights, with Paxman there.

0:46:040:46:07

This is going to be on television.

0:46:070:46:09

See you on the other side.

0:46:090:46:11

I think I'm more worried than most at the moment.

0:46:120:46:16

I might be over-thinking it a bit now.

0:46:160:46:17

It is a terrifying prospect, the entire thing.

0:46:170:46:21

Hopefully I'll be able to keep my nerves in check

0:46:210:46:23

and everything will go fine.

0:46:230:46:26

I've quizzed with these guys many times before

0:46:260:46:28

and I know that they're very good

0:46:280:46:30

but it's good not to take anything for granted

0:46:300:46:33

because the competition will be very strong.

0:46:330:46:37

-Well, hello. Good to see you.

-Good to see you.

0:46:370:46:42

-If you want to follow me, we're going to go to hospitality.

-Sounds good.

0:46:420:46:46

While the teams settle into their dressing rooms,

0:46:510:46:54

another University Challenge legend is making his final preparations.

0:46:540:46:58

Roger Tilling has been an integral part of the show since 1997.

0:46:580:47:02

My seat's up over in the corner, up there.

0:47:030:47:06

It's a specially designed piece of scaffolding

0:47:060:47:08

and I think it's got to be the best seat in the house.

0:47:080:47:11

You can see everything going on in the studio.

0:47:110:47:13

Trinity, Drnovsek Zorko.

0:47:130:47:16

I don't think people realise that the voice-overs are actually

0:47:160:47:19

done live in the studio. I think they probably reckon it's edited in afterwards.

0:47:190:47:22

So, for this game we have Magdalen Binnie, Magdalen Quinn,

0:47:220:47:25

Magdalen Savory, Magdalen Gillow.

0:47:250:47:28

Luckily, one team has a bell, one team has a buzzer,

0:47:280:47:31

which helps me home into the right team.

0:47:310:47:34

I think it's strategic to have

0:47:360:47:38

a long or difficult-to-pronounce surname on your team

0:47:380:47:41

because when you think about it,

0:47:410:47:43

it gives them at least an extra second to come up with the answer,

0:47:430:47:46

so if I was setting up a team, I would have

0:47:460:47:48

Drnovsek Zorko, Papaphilippopoulos

0:47:480:47:51

Warnakulasuriya and Bhattacharya all on the same team.

0:47:510:47:54

I think you'd win.

0:47:540:47:56

And although victory is on everyone's minds,

0:47:590:48:01

there's another trophy that all teams are desperate to acquire,

0:48:010:48:04

and they don't have to win to take it home.

0:48:040:48:07

These are the all-important nameplates that will be

0:48:070:48:09

in front of the students on the desks.

0:48:090:48:11

-I think these are more valuable than the trophy.

-Wow.

-That's so cool.

0:48:110:48:15

-And you get to keep it afterwards.

-Do you really?

-We send them out.

0:48:150:48:20

-That's amazing.

-Gimme, gimme.

0:48:200:48:22

Oh, my God.

0:48:220:48:24

-That's great.

-Definitely your name?

-That's my name. Thank you very much.

0:48:240:48:27

-We get to keep them, right?

-Yes.

-Awesome.

0:48:270:48:29

Before the teams go on, we've got to check they're spelt right.

0:48:290:48:33

The last thing you want is for some poor student

0:48:330:48:36

to go on TV and we've spelt their name horribly wrong.

0:48:360:48:38

My surname's spelled a bit weirdly and pronounced even weirder,

0:48:380:48:42

and I'm very precious about it

0:48:420:48:43

so if I'm on national TV, I want it to be right.

0:48:430:48:47

-Is that right?

-It feels like a sacred object!

0:48:470:48:51

Like the relics of a saint!

0:48:510:48:53

I think this is probably the proudest I've ever been.

0:48:530:48:56

This is the biggest achievement of my life.

0:48:560:48:59

Brasenose, Naude.

0:48:590:49:01

Can I put it on my back like a footballer?

0:49:010:49:04

Can I check that we've spelled your name correctly?

0:49:040:49:07

That is my name, right, guys. Yeah, that is right.

0:49:070:49:11

Good, excellent.

0:49:110:49:12

THEY LAUGH

0:49:120:49:14

Wow.

0:49:140:49:16

Greatest day of my life.

0:49:160:49:18

I'd love it if you could make me look like Gail Trimble.

0:49:200:49:23

Seeing the name thing makes me realise

0:49:230:49:25

that it's actually happening, we're finally here

0:49:250:49:28

and we're doing the filming, yeah.

0:49:280:49:30

In a matter of hours. Oops.

0:49:300:49:33

As reality hits home for the students,

0:49:370:49:39

their big moment draws ever closer

0:49:390:49:41

as they find out who they will face in the first round of matches.

0:49:410:49:44

Now for the grand reveal. You'll be playing against Selwyn, Cambridge.

0:49:440:49:50

-That's where I got turned away from.

-Ah!

-Oh, yeah.

0:49:500:49:53

-Revenge match?

-Yeah.

0:49:530:49:55

We've been drawn against Manchester, which is a pretty tough draw.

0:49:550:49:58

The last time Selwyn were on, they got a grand total of 75.

0:49:580:50:01

That was also against Manchester,

0:50:010:50:04

so we're hoping that history's not going to repeat itself.

0:50:040:50:08

I'm slightly nervous now that we know who we're playing, to be honest.

0:50:080:50:11

-I believe they're the academically best college...

-Oh, shut up!

0:50:110:50:16

Yeah, we'll be fine, we'll be OK.

0:50:160:50:19

We found out we're playing Trinity, Cambridge,

0:50:190:50:22

who are one of the big hitters,

0:50:220:50:24

but you've got to beat the big teams to win the competition.

0:50:240:50:26

We're playing Pembroke, Cambridge in our first-round match.

0:50:260:50:30

We've never met them before, don't know how good they are at quizzing,

0:50:300:50:34

so it's very much an unknown quantity.

0:50:340:50:36

We noticed that the opposition was carrying around a very large bear,

0:50:360:50:40

obviously intending to intimidate us, but it hasn't worked.

0:50:400:50:44

This is Paddy, our mascot,

0:50:470:50:50

and we're hoping that he brings us some good luck today.

0:50:500:50:53

We think the opposition have heard about him.

0:50:530:50:56

The opposition are going to be scared.

0:50:560:51:00

This is our mascot. It's a bell

0:51:000:51:02

and it's here because we plan to ring the changes.

0:51:020:51:06

BELL TINGS

0:51:060:51:07

This is our mascot Michael. He's stood by us through thick and thin.

0:51:070:51:11

He's acted as a light in the darkness, he's our driving force.

0:51:110:51:14

For Trinity College, Cambridge, there's a big decision to make.

0:51:140:51:18

We're trying to decide what mascot to have.

0:51:180:51:20

We've got the stegosaurus with us

0:51:200:51:22

but it's very big and it doesn't have any particular relevance

0:51:220:51:25

for most of the people on the team.

0:51:250:51:27

It's just something we had knocking around. It's a lovely model,

0:51:270:51:31

I don't deny that, but I'm not sure if it's quite the right thing.

0:51:310:51:34

I think size is the major factor.

0:51:340:51:36

Comparing what the other teams have got with them -

0:51:360:51:38

tiny little mice and one of them has got a hotel buzzer -

0:51:380:51:41

so perhaps just the scarf, I think.

0:51:410:51:45

There's strong opposition from Matthew

0:51:450:51:47

so I think it might have been vetoed, but that's OK.

0:51:470:51:50

It can watch from the sidelines.

0:51:500:51:52

We've brought out lucky mascots along

0:51:520:51:54

-and I think they're excited to be here. What do you think?

-Pretty sure.

0:51:540:51:57

It's hard to tell, though. They're just stuffed.

0:51:570:52:01

Slightly reluctantly, we've got my cuddly toy monkey Schweetheart,

0:52:010:52:05

who...

0:52:050:52:07

-Say his name again.

-Schweetheart.

0:52:100:52:12

He's going to bring us a lot of love and luck.

0:52:150:52:18

Beaver fight - ready?

0:52:180:52:20

Ohh!

0:52:200:52:22

LAUGHTER

0:52:240:52:26

As the final preparations are made in studio,

0:52:350:52:38

the nerves are building backstage.

0:52:380:52:41

I think we're all reasonably terrified.

0:52:430:52:46

I'm trying to distract myself from how nervous I am

0:52:460:52:49

by getting overexcited.

0:52:490:52:50

I'm very excited but getting a bit nervous now

0:52:500:52:55

because it is getting close, as well.

0:52:550:52:57

This is the first of many such walks to the University Challenge studio.

0:52:570:53:01

These guys have attempted to knock and run on Jeremy Paxman's door.

0:53:010:53:05

Thankfully, I don't think he was in there.

0:53:050:53:08

We'll just be sitting there with a wry smile on our face

0:53:080:53:11

knowing that, hey, no-one knows what's going on beneath the desk.

0:53:110:53:14

-But we know.

-That sounded wrong.

0:53:140:53:16

Come on, Lewis.

0:53:160:53:18

The honour belongs to the man in the arena,

0:53:180:53:21

not to those cold, timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

0:53:210:53:25

We're going to crush them.

0:53:250:53:27

The teams start to make their way to studio,

0:53:270:53:30

and they're not the only ones feeling the tension.

0:53:300:53:33

Stephen Pearson has been putting together the University of Manchester team

0:53:330:53:37

for 16 years and has attended almost every single recording.

0:53:370:53:40

Stephen's in the audience watching. We don't want to let him down,

0:53:400:53:44

but he knows we're just going to go in play the best game we can.

0:53:440:53:48

I'm quite nervous, really.

0:53:480:53:50

You never quite know how good the opposition are going to be

0:53:500:53:53

but I'm hoping they'll be nice and relaxed

0:53:530:53:56

and they'll enjoy it, whatever the result.

0:53:560:53:58

As the teams wait to go into studio,

0:53:580:54:01

they get some last-minute good-luck messages

0:54:010:54:03

as the audience take their seats.

0:54:030:54:05

-My dad and my sister are here.

-Hi!

-Eyes on the prize.

0:54:050:54:09

Good luck to those who are going on the studio floor, in particular.

0:54:090:54:13

Cheers. Ohh!

0:54:130:54:16

Good luck! We'll be cheering you on.

0:54:160:54:19

Team photo!

0:54:190:54:21

Woo!

0:54:210:54:23

Do you need your shoes? LAUGHTER

0:54:230:54:26

you're not the only guys who can lunge.

0:54:270:54:30

LAUGHTER

0:54:300:54:31

Oh, lovely knees!

0:54:310:54:33

LAUGHTER

0:54:330:54:35

I grew them myself.

0:54:360:54:38

I once did Newsnight in shorts,

0:54:380:54:41

but as you're under the desk it doesn't matter.

0:54:410:54:44

That's what we were thinking.

0:54:440:54:46

That's short recognition from Mr Paxman.

0:54:460:54:50

OK, we're ready for you now, guys, if you want to follow me.

0:54:500:54:54

-And so it begins.

-Indeed.

0:54:540:54:56

Welcome on the team from the Open University!

0:54:560:54:59

The moment has arrived. Time to follow in the footsteps

0:54:590:55:02

of some of the brightest brains in Britain

0:55:020:55:05

and walk onto the hallowed set for the first time.

0:55:050:55:07

Selwyn, Cambridge!

0:55:070:55:09

Manchester!

0:55:090:55:11

St Anne's, Oxford.

0:55:130:55:15

Trinity, Cambridge.

0:55:150:55:17

Brasenose, Oxford.

0:55:170:55:19

As the teams take their seats, it's a moment to treasure

0:55:220:55:25

for the students and for their mascots.

0:55:250:55:27

This is a big moment...

0:55:270:55:29

What am I going to do with this one?!

0:55:290:55:33

There we go. That's fine.

0:55:330:55:34

Got to say, you're being outdone on the mascot.

0:55:340:55:37

He doesn't sound the same when he's talking.

0:55:370:55:39

-He just seems like a normal guy.

-Nau-day?

-It's Naude.

0:55:390:55:43

-Nau... Naude?

-Yes, that's it. Thank you.

0:55:430:55:46

Perfect.

0:55:460:55:47

I'm feeling quite calm now I'm in here.

0:55:470:55:50

It's kind of odd to look around and go,

0:55:500:55:52

"This is what you see in a little box in your room but here we are."

0:55:520:55:55

You realise there's a gyroscope in the middle.

0:55:550:55:58

-It's really weird that you can see yourself as well.

-It is.

0:55:580:56:01

Some students are awestruck at the sight of the main man.

0:56:010:56:04

Oh, my God, there he is.

0:56:040:56:06

You don't mind sitting up and trying to look intelligent?

0:56:060:56:10

CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS

0:56:100:56:12

-Why do you wear them off the shoulder?

-It depends on the year.

0:56:120:56:16

Is there anything you guys need to know before we start?

0:56:160:56:18

Got any answers(?)

0:56:180:56:20

Do you know, I have.

0:56:200:56:22

But I'm not going to give them to you now.

0:56:220:56:25

HE WHISPERS

0:56:260:56:28

I realise you've done this about 600 times.

0:56:280:56:31

-No, it's a pleasure to see you...

-Good stuff. >

0:56:310:56:34

And, for real, I met Jeremy Paxman. I've made it.

0:56:360:56:38

Shook his hand. Not going to wash.

0:56:380:56:40

I hadn't realised from watching Uni Challenge

0:56:400:56:43

just how low and smoky Paxo's voice is.

0:56:430:56:46

I was very impressed, because it was so low and hot chocolate-y.

0:56:460:56:50

While some swoon over Jeremy,

0:56:510:56:53

other students are eager to test their buzzers.

0:56:530:56:55

BELLS RING

0:56:550:56:58

BUZZERS BEEP

0:56:580:57:01

Good.

0:57:010:57:02

BELL

0:57:020:57:05

-Don't try your buzzer!

-Sorry.

0:57:050:57:08

Eric, one of the buzzers is not working.

0:57:080:57:11

I just tested my buzzer and got told off for it

0:57:110:57:13

so I'm now going to be reticent to use it until I'm told.

0:57:130:57:16

BELL

0:57:160:57:18

Many take the studio appearance in their stride,

0:57:180:57:21

but for a few of the students, the pressure can prove too much.

0:57:210:57:25

And when you've got to go, you've got to go.

0:57:250:57:28

Over the past six months,

0:57:340:57:36

more than 130 teams have competed for

0:57:360:57:38

a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity

0:57:380:57:40

to join the exclusive club of quizzers

0:57:400:57:43

who have appeared on the British institution

0:57:430:57:46

that is University Challenge.

0:57:460:57:47

I'm feeling quite nervous at this stage.

0:57:470:57:50

Hopefully, it'll go well.

0:57:500:57:51

My teeth are feeling a bit numb now.

0:57:510:57:54

It's nice to be, finally, in the studio.

0:57:540:57:58

In the hot seat.

0:57:580:58:00

Here we are recording. Stand by.

0:58:030:58:05

My heart's racing.

0:58:070:58:09

Counting to titles in five...

0:58:090:58:12

I'm pretty nervous, to be honest.

0:58:120:58:14

Five seconds...

0:58:160:58:18

It's all about to happen.

0:58:180:58:20

And now just 28 teams remain

0:58:200:58:23

and await their turn

0:58:230:58:25

to hear Jeremy Paxman deliver that immortal phrase...

0:58:250:58:28

You know the rules - the whole world knows the rules -

0:58:280:58:32

so fingers on the buzzers here. Here's your first starter for 10.

0:58:320:58:35
