continuation of the same weather, I am afraid, and that means some | :00:00. | :00:00.
turbulent conditions, and that means some turbulent conditions, not just | :00:00. | :00:00.
for new year's day, also looking into the weekend as well. No change | :00:00. | :00:08.
in the weather and pattern just yet. -- weather pattern just yet. | :00:09. | :00:14.
Celebrations are well under way around the country ahead of the | :00:15. | :00:22.
countdown to the new year. We can go over to central London and our | :00:23. | :00:24.
correspondent Jonathan Blake, who's on the Embankment. The weather is | :00:25. | :00:27.
holding off until about a half an hour ago. It is quite chilly in here | :00:28. | :00:33.
and a little bit damp, but the crowds, who have been gathered here | :00:34. | :00:38.
for several hours into the night, it has not put them off their dancing. | :00:39. | :00:41.
They are doing anything they can to keep her all stop the fireworks | :00:42. | :00:46.
display as Chicago keep warm. We have heard that the -- the fireworks | :00:47. | :00:53.
display, we have heard it will be one of the best we have seen. There | :00:54. | :00:57.
will be tastes and smells as well. This will be the first 73 fireworks | :00:58. | :01:07.
display, and with me are the creators -- sensory fireworks | :01:08. | :01:09.
display, and with me are the creators of the display. Tonight, | :01:10. | :01:20.
the first multi sensory display. The fireworks will go into the sky and | :01:21. | :01:25.
he will smell strawberries. There will be been an attempt at becoming | :01:26. | :01:29.
out of the sky. It will look a bit like this. -- banana confetti. We | :01:30. | :01:37.
have heard this will go to the next level. It must be daunting to create | :01:38. | :01:43.
something on this scale with the world watching. This is one of the | :01:44. | :01:50.
world's largest flavour experiences ever to happen, and we are grateful | :01:51. | :01:54.
for Vodafone for allowing it to happen tonight. We have been working | :01:55. | :01:59.
on it for a year. Vodafone asked us what we would like to do for a world | :02:00. | :02:05.
first and this is it. We're going to experience it with tens of thousands | :02:06. | :02:09.
of people. We know you have been working hard, so fingers crossed it | :02:10. | :02:13.
all goes according to plan. Enjoy the show. It will be the added | :02:14. | :02:18.
elements. It is the fireworks that everyone is here to see. And just a | :02:19. | :02:23.
few minutes, Big Bend will chime midnight. 11 minutes of fireworks. | :02:24. | :02:32.
Pyrotechnics fired into the sky. Then I will once again be the | :02:33. | :02:37.
centrepiece of that display -- the lens and I will once again be the | :02:38. | :02:41.
centrepiece of that display which will bring in the new year in style. | :02:42. | :02:51.
We may not have reached 2014 just yet here in the UK, but other parts | :02:52. | :02:55.
of the world have already welcomed in the New.Year. First to see 2014 | :02:56. | :02:58.
were Samoa and Christmas Island in the Pacific and there it's already | :02:59. | :03:01.
lunchtime on January first. Nick Beake looks at the best of the | :03:02. | :03:06.
celebrations so far. Tonight, at the world's tallest | :03:07. | :03:10.
holding, a stunning world record attempt. You buy hopes it half a | :03:11. | :03:15.
million fireworks will go down as the biggest ever new year's display. | :03:16. | :03:23.
The highest rockets were said to reach one km high. On the ground, | :03:24. | :03:29.
they captured the start of 2014 in a spectacle which stretched over 30 | :03:30. | :03:37.
miles of the front. But as ever, Sydney's efforts were spectacular. | :03:38. | :03:41.
More than 1 million people crammed into the harbour. They watched more | :03:42. | :03:48.
than seven tonnes of pyrotechnics illuminate the city skyline. For | :03:49. | :03:52.
many, this reminds -- remained head and shoulders above the rest, and | :03:53. | :03:57.
that is an accolade the Australians will be loath to relinquish. The | :03:58. | :04:04.
Great Wall of China became a canvas of colour for celebrations in and | :04:05. | :04:13.
around Beijing. And this was the party on the waterfront in | :04:14. | :04:21.
Shanghai. Meanwhile, a British cannon fired at midnight in Hong | :04:22. | :04:25.
Kong on a tradition reaching back to the end of the second world war. In | :04:26. | :04:32.
Japan, there was time for prayer and reflection before Shinto priests | :04:33. | :04:39.
rang in the new year. New Zealanders had been among the first to welcome | :04:40. | :04:44.
2014. Fireworks rocketed from a sky tower in Auckland. In the Russian | :04:45. | :04:52.
capital, the Kremlin formed the backdrop for the celebrations, but | :04:53. | :04:57.
there was intent security in Red Square in response to the suicide | :04:58. | :05:00.
bombings in the south of the country in recent days. Meanwhile, this was | :05:01. | :05:05.
new year on board a ship stranded in Antarctica. You wouldn't think they | :05:06. | :05:14.
would be stuck in the ice for nearly a week. The Russian search SL is | :05:15. | :05:24.
carrying 74 scientists, tourists and crew. Attempt to reach the ship has | :05:25. | :05:31.
failed but the ship is stocked with food and is said to not be in | :05:32. | :05:36.
danger. Closer to home, in the past hour, it has been the turn of Berlin | :05:37. | :05:42.
to party. It has been 25 years since the wall which divided the city came | :05:43. | :05:48.
crashing down. Here in the UK, with less than half an hour to go, | :05:49. | :05:53.
Edinburgh is electric. 80,000 people are thought to be in the city centre | :05:54. | :05:59.
or the Hogmanay street party. And in central London, an estimated quarter | :06:00. | :06:03.
of a million have descended on Big Bang, whose chimes surely will | :06:04. | :06:04.
herald the start of 2014. What are the Scottish up to as the | :06:05. | :06:18.
count down to the new year? Our Scotland correspondent is in | :06:19. | :06:22.
Edinburgh now for the Hogmanay celebrations. Edinburgh Castle, as | :06:23. | :06:25.
usual, will be the centrepiece of Evans? You can hear the Pet Shop | :06:26. | :06:30.
Boys playing behind me, and in front of me, the street is packed with | :06:31. | :06:39.
revelers, pipes and drums. 80,000 people are packed into the street | :06:40. | :06:44.
here and thousands more in places) the city centre and right across | :06:45. | :06:49.
Scotland. With the art -- in places right around the city centre. With | :06:50. | :06:54.
me now are some people who have been celebrating. It has been great to be | :06:55. | :07:01.
playing in Edinburgh with so many friendly faces in the crowd. It is a | :07:02. | :07:06.
great atmosphere. Wire a local lad coming to play on a local -- you are | :07:07. | :07:11.
a local lad coming to play for local people on a local stage. Yes. The | :07:12. | :07:20.
first track that was played, the guitar was cut out and all I could | :07:21. | :07:23.
hear was the voices, but everyone was clapping along. It worked out to | :07:24. | :07:30.
be a good gig. What is the atmosphere like when you are up on | :07:31. | :07:33.
the stage and playing for so many people? Brilliant, especially this | :07:34. | :07:37.
gig in particular. Nothing can go wrong. Everyone is very happy and it | :07:38. | :07:45.
is a fantastic place to be. Thank you very much. You look at the | :07:46. | :07:49.
number of people here this evening. This is Edinburgh at its best. | :07:50. | :07:55.
Absolutely. It is a fantastic crowd. We are very proud of the capital | :07:56. | :08:02.
city and Hogmanay is very special to us. It is a special time for us. | :08:03. | :08:06.
Everyone is having a fantastic time and it is going really well. You | :08:07. | :08:14.
have only got ten minutes to go. I will be back there watching the | :08:15. | :08:18.
fantastic fireworks display and I would not miss it for the world. It | :08:19. | :08:22.
is three days of Evans, said there is plenty going on tomorrow as | :08:23. | :08:28.
well. There was -- events, so there is plenty going on tomorrow as well. | :08:29. | :08:32.
This has been the centrepiece. I have met people from all over the | :08:33. | :08:36.
world to have come here because the hear this is the capital of | :08:37. | :08:40.
Hogmanay. As someone who is part of the city, how is it to welcome all | :08:41. | :08:45.
of these people? It is fantastic. It is such a great city. We are all | :08:46. | :08:51.
very proud of it. It is a very international city. Everywhere you | :08:52. | :08:55.
look, people are enjoying themselves with all different languages and | :08:56. | :08:58.
cultures. It is a tremendous atmosphere and everybody is really | :08:59. | :09:03.
excited. What can we expect from the fireworks? Can you give us any | :09:04. | :09:09.
hints? Very complicated and very well-planned. We are very lucky with | :09:10. | :09:16.
the weather. I am sure it will all go really well. It is going to be | :09:17. | :09:21.
big. We have seven Hills in Edinburgh, so it would not all be in | :09:22. | :09:26.
one place. Wherever you are in the city it will look fantastic. Right | :09:27. | :09:31.
along princes Street, we got big screens with live music stages, and | :09:32. | :09:37.
it will be some party. World-class party. Thank you both very much. I | :09:38. | :09:42.
can tell you, this marks the start of a momentous year for Scotland. | :09:43. | :09:47.
When those bells ring in just a few moments, we have the Commonwealth | :09:48. | :09:52.
games, the Ryder Cup, and of course, the independence referendum. For | :09:53. | :09:56.
now, for the 80,000 people that have packed into the street, the moment | :09:57. | :10:03.
is soon to arrive. There are manual press buttons on their laptops. | :10:04. | :10:07.
65,000 fireworks will light up the castles from 52 separate locations. | :10:08. | :10:13.
That is what we can expect in just a few moments. Many thanks. What a | :10:14. | :10:20.
momentous year it will be for the Scots in 2014. The clock is ticking | :10:21. | :10:25.
closer to midnight. For more on how things are going on in Central | :10:26. | :10:30.
London, let's go to Jonathan, who is on the embankment. He is waiting for | :10:31. | :10:34.
us. 80,000 people will be in the centre of Emperor to celebrate. How | :10:35. | :10:38.
many are you expecting where you are? | :10:39. | :10:43.
The organisers are saying there is room for 250,000 people in the | :10:44. | :10:47.
viewing areas for tonight's IRIX display. -- fireworks display. It is | :10:48. | :10:57.
30 or so deep in front of me. People have been waiting very patiently all | :10:58. | :11:03.
afternoon. And the last half an hour or so, the wind has whipped up a bit | :11:04. | :11:07.
and people's umbrellas have gone up, but everyone is in good spirits | :11:08. | :11:11.
and they will not let a little bit of bad weather brewing 2014's | :11:12. | :11:19.
firework display. It is set to last 15 minutes -- 11 minutes, 12,000 | :11:20. | :11:27.
pyrotechnics shooting into the night's sky. The London eye will be | :11:28. | :11:31.
the centrepiece of tonight's display for this now world-famous | :11:32. | :11:35.
celebration, with the eyes of the world and London. There are three | :11:36. | :11:38.
barges lined up and the River Thames, which have pyrotechnic | :11:39. | :11:43.
equipment on them, and they will add to the display. We have heard about | :11:44. | :11:48.
the added elements, the extrasensory element, that organisers say will | :11:49. | :11:53.
make this a world first. There will be peach flavoured snow and orange | :11:54. | :12:00.
bubbles, which will add to the experience. It is of course the | :12:01. | :12:04.
fireworks which people are here to see, and organisers are promising | :12:05. | :12:08.
that, although 2013 was not perhaps the iconic year that's 2012 was, | :12:09. | :12:14.
this will be the best fireworks display that London has ever seen. | :12:15. | :12:18.
The music has stopped, the countdown is now on, and there is very little | :12:19. | :12:22.
time to go before the corridor of a million people here packing the | :12:23. | :12:26.
embankment ridges across the Thames and other roads in central London | :12:27. | :12:30.
are waiting to see, the fireworks display which promises to welcome in | :12:31. | :12:37.
2014 here in London in style. Jonathan lies in central London on | :12:38. | :12:47.
the waiting for -- Jonathan lies in the en banc met in central London. | :12:48. | :12:52.
We will show you the scene as we wait for Big Bend to reach midnight | :12:53. | :13:00.
to usher in 2014. The London eye there, lit up in blue, hovering | :13:01. | :13:09.
above embankment there. 50,000 people gathered and there are | :13:10. | :13:13.
viewing areas rather -- viewing areas along the Thames for another | :13:14. | :13:19.
100,000 people to see all of the action. As we have been hearing, 36 | :13:20. | :13:25.
seconds to go, a century experience as well -- a sensory experience as | :13:26. | :13:32.
well. Fruit flavoured bubbles will descend from the skies as a people | :13:33. | :13:36.
can actually taste the atmosphere as 2014 is ushered in. | :13:37. | :13:52.
(COUNTDOWN). (BELL TOLLS). | :13:53. | :14:29.
# I need to know...can you love me again? # London calling... # This is | :14:30. | :15:46.
London. # London calling. # Let's dance. | :15:47. | :15:56.
# Let's dance. # We gonna let it burn, burn, burn, | :15:57. | :17:47.
burn. # It's gonna get, it's gonna get, | :17:48. | :23:55.
it's gonna get louder. Indeed, 24 team are in in | :23:56. | :25:06.
spectacular style. -- 2014. Illuminated by all of those | :25:07. | :25:09.
fireworks, on the banks of the Thames River. 60,000 people in that | :25:10. | :25:17.
area. And along the Thames, another 100,000 or so. All welcoming in the | :25:18. | :25:26.
new year. Well, of course the New Year celebrations have been going on | :25:27. | :25:30.
around the country. Let's take a look at what happened in Edinburgh. | :25:31. | :29:38.
Another spectacular show. These celebrations are going to go on for | :29:39. | :29:51.
another couple of days? This is three days worth of celebrations in | :29:52. | :30:00.
what they described as the capital of the world. It was a momentous | :30:01. | :30:14.
moment. You often think, about fireworks, about a man lighting a | :30:15. | :30:25.
match but now, 15,000 fireworks. The pet shop those are still playing | :30:26. | :30:30.
behind me. Up the hill you can hear the fiddles and pipes. Up in the | :30:31. | :30:39.
mountains there are further stages where people are enjoying | :30:40. | :30:48.
themselves. People were holding hands, singing, a moment for people | :30:49. | :30:53.
to come together. This is a momentous year for Scotland. We have | :30:54. | :30:58.
the Commonwealth games, the Ryder Cup, huge sporting events coming to | :30:59. | :31:02.
Scotland but then there is that decision for the people here on | :31:03. | :31:07.
September 18, on whether or not Scotland should be an independent | :31:08. | :31:12.
country. All of that is for the year to come. This moment is all people | :31:13. | :31:23.
to enjoy wherever you are. Had picked new year to everybody. But at | :31:24. | :31:33.
happy New Year to everybody. Now we go to central London. Have you had a | :31:34. | :31:48.
sensory experience tonight? What did the bubble taste like? The extra | :31:49. | :31:56.
sensory element did add something to the display but frankly it was at | :31:57. | :32:01.
the fireworks were catching everybody's attention. Simply | :32:02. | :32:05.
overwhelming to witness a close. Happy New Year from everyone here in | :32:06. | :32:12.
central London. I have here at two of the men responsible for putting | :32:13. | :32:20.
on the show. It all seemed to go according to plan's absolutely | :32:21. | :32:29.
fantastic. It went 100%. We got hit by a loss of rain beforehand but it | :32:30. | :32:34.
actually added to the atmosphere at the display it was a good effort and | :32:35. | :32:39.
what an experience we have given to hundreds of thousands of people who | :32:40. | :32:49.
are came down here. crowds were promised the best display, what made | :32:50. | :32:55.
it special for you's the synchronisation with the music | :32:56. | :32:57.
worked quite well. Considering the weather, and the other elements, I | :32:58. | :33:03.
am delighted with the way it has gone and hopefully that is a pat on | :33:04. | :33:07.
the back for each other. It seems like the crowd here enjoyed it. What | :33:08. | :33:14.
amount of planning went to put on a show like this? It is down to micro | :33:15. | :33:22.
second start. There is the music, what the display looks like, we put | :33:23. | :33:28.
it into animation. It is not just the two of us, there is a huge team | :33:29. | :33:35.
- around 3000 people working in our team in London. Without them and | :33:36. | :33:41.
without the masses of other people who helped, no one could do it. It | :33:42. | :33:50.
is brilliant. For someone who has witnessed it up close for the first | :33:51. | :33:55.
time, it is incredible. The last few minutes was a real crescendo, the | :33:56. | :33:59.
likes of which we have not seen before. It was a superb finale. It | :34:00. | :34:06.
impressed me as well. I thought I knew what was coming but it even | :34:07. | :34:11.
took me by supply. Congratulations again. Talk us through how it works, | :34:12. | :34:17.
when the display starts, is there someone with a finger up on the | :34:18. | :34:24.
button? It is all automated. Today there are special effects all fired | :34:25. | :34:34.
by a GPS. We are aligning to Big Ben -150 years old. We need to make sure | :34:35. | :34:39.
that the clock Tower team have got themselves a mind to make sure we | :34:40. | :34:44.
are synchronised. It is modern and older technology. You have many | :34:45. | :34:48.
years of experience but it is something you cannot practice, there | :34:49. | :34:53.
is no dress rehearsal. You must be nervous in the minutes leading up to | :34:54. | :35:01.
it? It is probably the two hours so before midnight. The anxiety, the | :35:02. | :35:08.
stress. We are relying on a lot of people to have done their jobs | :35:09. | :35:12.
properly. It went well so I am delighted and now we have the relief | :35:13. | :35:17.
that we have done a good job. For a few days and then you start planning | :35:18. | :35:23.
for next year? We hope we have the opportunity to do so. We have been | :35:24. | :35:28.
doing it for ten years and we would like to do it for more. | :35:29. | :35:33.
Congratulations. Well done and a happy New Year to you. The best that | :35:34. | :35:44.
London has seen, according to the organisers, everything went | :35:45. | :35:49.
according to plan. The crowds starting to dispose slowly but the | :35:50. | :35:52.
rain has stopped. There were a few showers before midnight but, | :35:53. | :35:57.
frankly, people who waited with not going to put -- let those put them | :35:58. | :36:09.
off. It went off with lots of banks! -- The rebel leader in South Sudan, | :36:10. | :36:13.
Riek Machar, has agreed to peace talks with the Government just hours | :36:14. | :36:15.
after his forces attacked the strategically important town | :36:16. | :36:30.
let's have a look at how the world agreed to 2014. | :36:31. | :41:17.
Wow, what a lot of fire power. Just some of the scenes as the world hush | :41:18. | :41:28.
as in 2014. Now it is time to look at the weather for | :41:29. | :41:29. |
