Good morning and welcome to Westminster Abbey.

:00:07.:00:12.

Today thousands will gather today inside in solidarity, to spread a

:00:13.:00:18.

message of hope in response to the terror attacks which took place just

:00:19.:00:19.

two weeks ago. This morning, as you can see, life

:00:20.:01:11.

continues as normal on Westminster Bridge but it is forever scarred. In

:01:12.:01:15.

the heart of London you can see the three iconic landmarks. The Palace

:01:16.:01:19.

of Westminster, Parliament Square and Westminster Abbey. All united in

:01:20.:01:24.

a nation's grief. I watched this morning as many stopped at the lamp

:01:25.:01:28.

posts still on Westminster Bridge, covered in floral tributes and

:01:29.:01:32.

today's an opportunity for all of us to stop, to remember and to pay

:01:33.:01:35.

tribute to the lives of those which were lost. And lives which will

:01:36.:01:40.

never be the same after that fateful afternoon.

:01:41.:01:54.

Inside the Abbey today are some of the injured and the families

:01:55.:02:00.

of those so tragically killed just two weeks ago.

:02:01.:02:07.

We are also joined by the men you and women of the emergency services

:02:08.:02:13.

who ran to treat those injured. Many who ran from the hospital and across

:02:14.:02:25.

bridge -- across Westminster Bridge. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge

:02:26.:02:28.

and Prince Harry will be arriving short lane the abbey also home --

:02:29.:02:35.

shortly and the Abbey also home today to a number of Members of

:02:36.:02:40.

Parliament who have made the short walk from the Palace of Westminster.

:02:41.:02:43.

For many of those who are here today, this is where they came a

:02:44.:02:49.

fortnight ago. The Abbey, as it has been, at many points in its history

:02:50.:02:56.

came a place of refuge as the cordon came down around Westminster. Some

:02:57.:02:59.

of those have come here today to mourn. Some to contemplate. And many

:03:00.:03:04.

as well, acknowledged the response to the attack. But all are here, I

:03:05.:03:09.

think it is safe to say, all gathered today in this special

:03:10.:03:12.

place, as a show of defiance and a show of hope. That's the hope that

:03:13.:03:19.

says that those who attack our freedom, our democracy, our values,

:03:20.:03:27.

will not break our spirits. That attack on Westminster Bridge lasted

:03:28.:03:29.

just 82 seconds. In those brief moments

:03:30.:03:34.

of violence, an estimated 50 people were injured and five

:03:35.:03:37.

lives were extinguished. The following film

:03:38.:03:39.

is 82 seconds long. It still feels so raw, doesn't it

:03:40.:05:10.

Kurt Cochran died on that day. Kurt Cochran's nephew said

:05:11.:05:24.

he was one of the happiest His family have been struck by the

:05:25.:05:35.

reaction around this country and the shall world. Of his family are in

:05:36.:05:43.

the Abbey today including his wife. Aysha Frade was on her way to

:05:44.:05:47.

collect her children from school. Her husband John has said his life

:05:48.:05:53.

was completely fallen apart. John is here today, alongside their two

:05:54.:06:01.

daughters. Leslie Rhodes' neighbour, Christine Carney, she was told by

:06:02.:06:06.

nurses at his bedside at King's College Hospital to say goodbye as

:06:07.:06:08.

they were switching off his life support machine.

:06:09.:06:22.

She played his favourite song by Queen,

:06:23.:06:23.

PC Keith Palmer's family said Keith will be remembered

:06:24.:06:35.

as a wonderful dad and husband, a loving son, brother and uncle.

:06:36.:06:37.

The Palmers are also in the Abbey with 16 members of the family,

:06:38.:06:44.

including his wife Michelle. This might be a national occasion but for

:06:45.:06:49.

the families, this is the first time they'll all be together in the same

:06:50.:06:56.

place and theirs is a shared grief. I don't know about you, but I

:06:57.:06:59.

remember following what happened on social media on that day and then

:07:00.:07:04.

subsequently on radio and television, desperate for details.

:07:05.:07:08.

Checking with those I knew who were in London, thought might be in

:07:09.:07:12.

London, hoping and praying that everyone was OK. Many were doing the

:07:13.:07:17.

same, as I'm sure the Mayor of London was. And he is alongside

:07:18.:07:21.

Sonali Shah. Sadiq Khan, as Mayor of London, the

:07:22.:07:29.

threat of something like this must have always been in the back of your

:07:30.:07:32.

mind. Where were you when you heard what was happening and what were

:07:33.:07:35.

your initial thoughts? I was a the City Hall. The threat will he for a

:07:36.:07:40.

while has been severe. Which means an attack is highly likely. The

:07:41.:07:44.

previous Commissioner had a mantra - when there is an attack, not if, so

:07:45.:07:49.

we prepare and plan for these things and have practised them and hope

:07:50.:07:53.

aprayed we never had to implement all the things we had planned and

:07:54.:07:56.

prepared for. What is important is we as a city have shown our

:07:57.:08:00.

resilience. This service today is one of hope, we are not going to be

:08:01.:08:13.

cowed by terrorists. What was pleasing with a was the emergency

:08:14.:08:16.

services running towards danger, showing the very best of humanity

:08:17.:08:23.

and London. We saw the very best of London in the vigil you organised

:08:24.:08:27.

the next day, did you feel the city needed that? Our city is very

:08:28.:08:35.

diverse. The victims of the attack were from all corners of the world.

:08:36.:08:39.

Many people were confused and weren't sure what to do to show

:08:40.:08:46.

solidarity. We thought Londoners and visitors, the best way to show

:08:47.:08:58.

solidarity, to come together, to say we are not going to be cowed by

:08:59.:09:03.

terrorists, we will not allow you to destroy our shared values and shared

:09:04.:09:07.

way of life. And it was important for the rest of the world to see the

:09:08.:09:12.

very best of our city. Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, thank you very

:09:13.:09:14.

much. Sadiq Khan will take his place in a

:09:15.:09:26.

receiving line alongside Craig Mackey, the Assistant Commissioner

:09:27.:09:28.

of the Metropolitan Police. He was also a key witness to events that

:09:29.:09:33.

day, yards away from PC Keith Palmer when he was stabbed.

:09:34.:09:40.

You can see a collection of multi-faith leaders from across the

:09:41.:09:46.

country, being processed through the Abbey. They'll be taking part in the

:09:47.:09:54.

service a little bit later on. Including the likes of Rabbi David

:09:55.:10:02.

Mason. And Lord Singh of Wimbledon from the Sikh community. And Rabbi

:10:03.:10:19.

Baroness Neuberger. In the days following the attack #WeAreNotAfraid

:10:20.:10:29.

and #We Stand Together were shared. And

:10:30.:10:36.

I'm sure you saw the women from all different backgrounds holding hands

:10:37.:10:39.

on Westminster Bridge, showing solidarity and condemning the crime.

:10:40.:10:43.

It's been an incident which has brought many together and as we look

:10:44.:10:47.

at these multi-faith leaders taking their seats in the Abbey, this

:10:48.:10:51.

morning many of them will be leading prayers in front of the congregation

:10:52.:10:54.

later. It wasn't just in London, either. There were vigils held in

:10:55.:11:01.

Leeds, in Birmingham, in Manchester. Oxford. Leicester, Sheffield,

:11:02.:11:10.

Bradford and Swansea. A book of condolence was also opened at

:11:11.:11:15.

Belfast City Hall. And in Edinburgh, the flags were at half-mast.

:11:16.:11:27.

Those events of two weeks ago still very fresh in the memories of the

:11:28.:11:33.

families who are here today and in ours as well, as we watch.

:11:34.:11:42.

Westminster Abbey, so close to where those events took place.

:11:43.:11:48.

Over the course of the last two weeks or so, many have talked about

:11:49.:11:55.

and paid tribute to the response of the emergency services. Many of them

:11:56.:12:00.

are with us today. There were 68 paramedic and ambulance crews who

:12:01.:12:04.

responded to the attack, they were supported by firefighters, police

:12:05.:12:09.

and the air Ambulance Service. There were many heroes on that day.

:12:10.:12:16.

Westminster Bridge is a heaving mass of people. There is often a traffic

:12:17.:12:23.

jam of the it's full of tourists. Many of our staff use it every day.

:12:24.:12:28.

Not just to come to work but we use it to travel between our hospital

:12:29.:12:33.

sites. So it feels part of St Thomas'. I was at a commendation

:12:34.:12:40.

ceremony at New Scotland Yard. It was a really good day, a really good

:12:41.:12:44.

feel. I stayed behind to tidy up some of the chairs in the room. And

:12:45.:12:50.

the news came on to say that there was sounds of explosions. I was

:12:51.:12:55.

driving back from a meeting when a colleague of mine contacted me to

:12:56.:12:59.

say that the incident was taking place. When I heard Westminster

:13:00.:13:06.

Bridge had been attacked, I felt physically sick. My first thoughts

:13:07.:13:14.

were to get into the control room to make sure the first responders were

:13:15.:13:17.

there on the scene. Every hospital in the NHS needs to have a major

:13:18.:13:23.

incident plan and I took the role to look after our patients and our

:13:24.:13:28.

staff. We mobilise our fire rescue units. We had around about 50 people

:13:29.:13:36.

attend the scene. . It became apparent that a police officer had

:13:37.:13:40.

lost their life. I knew then that that was something that I couldn't -

:13:41.:13:44.

it is not that I couldn't deal with it, but I had to put that emotion to

:13:45.:13:49.

one side. I've spoken to a few people since and apologised because

:13:50.:13:53.

I never mentioned Keith, I never said that I knew that Keith had

:13:54.:14:00.

passed away. A number of our staff, they ran on to the bridge without

:14:01.:14:04.

any thought of whether it was safe to do so because it happened to

:14:05.:14:09.

quickly. They had no idea what they were going into. You know the

:14:10.:14:13.

responses of people is amazing, isn't it? Whether you are a member

:14:14.:14:17.

of London Fire Brigade, London Ambulance Service, you are a police

:14:18.:14:20.

officer, everyone runs towards that. There are lots of members of the

:14:21.:14:24.

public as well. So, those are times when you see London at its worst and

:14:25.:14:33.

London at its best at the same time. It has different impacts on

:14:34.:14:39.

individuals. I know some of our staff haven't had the courage to

:14:40.:14:45.

walk across the bridge yet. I don't think the dust is going to settle

:14:46.:14:49.

here for a very long time. I think this will live with people for

:14:50.:14:52.

years. Some people will always live with it.

:14:53.:14:58.

The memorial is vital to enable everybody to come together to spend

:14:59.:15:04.

some time to reflect on what occurred. Events such as these, the

:15:05.:15:09.

starting of the healing process. Dame Eileen Sills, who we have just

:15:10.:15:27.

seen, is part of the congregation in Westminster Abbey today. Her

:15:28.:15:32.

colleagues are here from Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital, one of the five

:15:33.:15:36.

hospitals which took in patients on the day. She is here not just with

:15:37.:15:40.

the medical staff but also the backroom staff who run the

:15:41.:15:44.

switchboards. They took hundreds of calls in the days after the attack.

:15:45.:15:49.

Those calls came in from all over the world, from people looking for

:15:50.:15:54.

information about their loved ones. We mentioned that there are over 400

:15:55.:16:00.

members of the emergency services in the Abbey today. Two of them are

:16:01.:16:07.

with Sonali. I am with Tom George and Doctor Fenella Wrigley. We have

:16:08.:16:10.

just been hearing about the hard-working hospital staff in the

:16:11.:16:14.

days after the attack. How have you and your team's been preparing for

:16:15.:16:18.

something like this, preparing to work together with other emergency

:16:19.:16:23.

services? For a number of years, working really closely with the

:16:24.:16:26.

police and London Ambulance Service so that when an event like this is

:16:27.:16:30.

unfortunately happens, everything comes together, we knew the

:16:31.:16:33.

relationships and how the teams worked and we came together like

:16:34.:16:38.

clockwork if you like. So many eyewitness accounts that every

:16:39.:16:41.

injured person had members of the public with them who stayed on the

:16:42.:16:45.

scene to help out. So you also worked with the public, didn't you?

:16:46.:16:51.

We did, we worked with our stakeholders, the public and

:16:52.:16:54.

London's air ambulance who deployed a team to assist our crews. We would

:16:55.:16:59.

like to pay tribute to the families and friends of everyone who was

:17:00.:17:03.

injured and died in the incident. That is what today is about. How

:17:04.:17:07.

important is it to also thank those who responded to the incident?

:17:08.:17:12.

Absolutely. It was an absolute tragedy what happens two weeks ago.

:17:13.:17:17.

As the mayor said, London is very much open for business and you can

:17:18.:17:21.

see that on the streets. It is very proper that we respect the family

:17:22.:17:24.

and friends of the loved ones who died in the way that we are doing

:17:25.:17:26.

this morning. Thank you. Lovely to hear from them. If you are

:17:27.:17:39.

just joining us, we are broadcasting a special service of hope from

:17:40.:17:42.

Westminster Abbey following the terror attack of two weeks ago. On

:17:43.:17:46.

that day, millions around the world followed the news as it unfolded. It

:17:47.:17:52.

was a daylight any other day, really. The bridge was packed with

:17:53.:17:56.

tourists, school parties, people going about their daily lives. There

:17:57.:18:00.

was one message to St Thomas' Hospital, the hospital at the end of

:18:01.:18:08.

Westminster Bridge. It read, the term forces sweetheart was first

:18:09.:18:11.

used by British Tommies in World War I, referring to the nurses who

:18:12.:18:15.

tended to the wounded soldiers. The message went on to say, Londoners

:18:16.:18:20.

know who their sweethearts are, the doctors and nurses who ran to help

:18:21.:18:26.

people on Westminster Bridge. Chief Superintendent John Sutherland wrote

:18:27.:18:28.

of the police that They are the headlong

:18:29.:18:31.

rush of blues and twos. The first to the scene.

:18:32.:18:54.

The first to the chase. The first to confront.

:18:55.:18:57.

The first to protect. And, sometimes, they pay

:18:58.:18:59.

the greatest price of all." The family of PC Keith Palmer know

:19:00.:19:07.

the truth only too well. There has been a renewed appreciation of

:19:08.:19:10.

officers on the front line in recent weeks. In Newport, there was an

:19:11.:19:14.

anonymous card left by a stranger on the bonnet of a police car, with

:19:15.:19:19.

flowers and chocolates attached to it, and a note written inside,

:19:20.:19:21.

simply saying, thank you. Police constable Keith Palmer was

:19:22.:19:31.

killed protecting parliament that they two weeks ago. MP James

:19:32.:19:36.

Cleverly spoke in the House of Commons the next day. With your

:19:37.:19:43.

indulgence, sir, I would like to turn for a moment to PC Keith Palmer

:19:44.:19:46.

who I first met 25 years ago as Gunnar Keith Palmer. A member of the

:19:47.:19:54.

Royal Artillery. He was a strong, professional public servant. And it

:19:55.:20:02.

was a delight to meet him here again only a few months after being

:20:03.:20:09.

elected. Would my right honourable friend the Prime Minister, in

:20:10.:20:15.

recognition of the work that he did, and the other police officers and

:20:16.:20:20.

public servants here in the house do, consider recognising his

:20:21.:20:29.

gallantry and sacrifice formally with posthumous recognition?

:20:30.:20:34.

James Key cleverly knew PC Palmer well. -- James Cleverly. He will

:20:35.:20:43.

have known he was a season ticket holder at Charlton Athletic and last

:20:44.:20:46.

night the club had a minute's silence in his memory, with 22 of PC

:20:47.:20:51.

Palmer's colleagues alongside the pitch. All the player match fees

:20:52.:20:55.

will be donated to the Palmer surnamed family. Also here in the

:20:56.:21:02.

Abbey today is be Leader of the House of Commons, who is with

:21:03.:21:06.

Sonali. David Lidington, as Leader of the House of Commons, you had to

:21:07.:21:10.

address the lockdown chamber and keep everyone informed. Describe the

:21:11.:21:15.

scene for us. Initially there was inevitably some confusion. We heard

:21:16.:21:21.

a loud crash, the car going into the wall. I thought it was a road

:21:22.:21:25.

accident. Then we got reports of people running and shots being

:21:26.:21:28.

fired. The news came through within a few minutes. The Deputy Speaker

:21:29.:21:34.

and I decided that the best way forward would be for me as leader to

:21:35.:21:38.

say, look, this is the limited information the police have said

:21:39.:21:42.

they are willing to put to the public at the moment, this is

:21:43.:21:46.

serious we have to remain in lockdown. People responded calmly

:21:47.:21:49.

and they knew the gravity of the situation. PC Keith Palmer would

:21:50.:21:53.

have been so well known around the House of Commons. Yes. He was one of

:21:54.:22:00.

the regulars. Not just at the gate, or on duty at the rear entrance to

:22:01.:22:04.

the chamber itself, behind Mr Speaker's chair. He was a familiar

:22:05.:22:08.

and friendly face to an awful lot of us. That sense of initial shock was

:22:09.:22:14.

very quickly overtaken by a sense of horror and then just after heartfelt

:22:15.:22:20.

sympathy for his family and also the families of the other people who had

:22:21.:22:23.

lost their lives. David Lidington, thank you for talking to us.

:22:24.:22:30.

The Leader of the Commons made that speech to

:22:31.:22:33.

the House of Commons at around three o'clock on that Wednesday afternoon

:22:34.:22:41.

two weeks ago. Over the course of those hours, that afternoon,

:22:42.:22:44.

thousands of messages appeared on social media. An outpouring of unity

:22:45.:22:49.

and solidarity, and hope as well, which is the whole purpose of

:22:50.:22:56.

today's's service at the Abbey. Ben O'Sullivan from Cardiff tweeted, we

:22:57.:23:00.

will not be broken, we will not be cowed, you shall not destroy our

:23:01.:23:04.

democracy, we are all Londoners today. David Cobb reform London also

:23:05.:23:13.

tweeted, my city, our city, the world's city, we stand together, we

:23:14.:23:16.

stand tall, we will prevail. On the day the Prime Minister

:23:17.:23:27.

Theresa May was whisked away from the Palace of Westminster, just

:23:28.:23:32.

moments after the attack. It was in a press conference later, held

:23:33.:23:36.

outside Number Ten, that she said, the location of this attack was no

:23:37.:23:42.

accident. The terrorists chose to strike at the heart of our capital

:23:43.:23:47.

city, said the Prime Minister. Where people of all nationalities,

:23:48.:23:50.

religions and cultures come together and celebrate the values of liberty,

:23:51.:23:52.

democracy and freedom of speech. The Prime Minister is unable to be

:23:53.:24:02.

here today, she is in Saudi Arabia. The Home Secretary Amber Rudd will

:24:03.:24:07.

be giving a reading later as part of the service.

:24:08.:24:12.

And someone else taking part in the service later is also alongside

:24:13.:24:20.

Sonali. Commander Mak Chishty will be reading a prayer later in the

:24:21.:24:24.

service. What is your assessment of the way the public has reacted in

:24:25.:24:31.

the two weeks after the attack? I think we have had a tremendous

:24:32.:24:35.

response. At a time when people are confused, dazed, hurting, we have

:24:36.:24:39.

seen people coming together strongly to show that we are united, and send

:24:40.:24:44.

a strong message of community cohesion and unification. London is

:24:45.:24:50.

often described in the way you have just described it, tolerant, open

:24:51.:24:54.

and diverse. But something like that can change people, it can make

:24:55.:24:59.

people worried. Where do you see hope and optimism? The whole purpose

:25:00.:25:03.

of terrorism is to shock communities, to disrupt and divide

:25:04.:25:07.

them. London's difference has been a strength. We have stood together and

:25:08.:25:11.

it is occasioned like this when you get inspiration and hope, and I am

:25:12.:25:15.

certainly hopeful for the future. Prayers for those who have been

:25:16.:25:19.

injured and lost their lives, but ultimately dressing for the future

:25:20.:25:22.

to keep us safe and well. We have seen a lot of public displays of

:25:23.:25:28.

defiance. The public have come out, they have genuinely been hurting and

:25:29.:25:31.

grieving together, it has been authentic and genuine. People have

:25:32.:25:35.

seen that, we have been hurt together but we are also going to be

:25:36.:25:38.

spirited together, and today is about showing unity. And you feel

:25:39.:25:43.

that London will remain united? I have no doubt about that. This time

:25:44.:25:52.

around, there has been a slight increase in hate crime for a couple

:25:53.:25:56.

of days, but it shows a tribute to our community and country that we

:25:57.:26:00.

will not let terrorism divide us. Commander Mak Chishty, thank you.

:26:01.:26:05.

We will see him later leading the congregation at Westminster Abbey in

:26:06.:26:15.

prayer. The Abbey has thought long and hard about how to produce

:26:16.:26:19.

today's service, with the message centrally of hope and humanity. At

:26:20.:26:25.

its heart, it will feature an act of commitment, where everyone in the

:26:26.:26:27.

congregation will have a lighted candle. The Dean, Doctor Johnson

:26:28.:26:34.

Maule, who will lead the service, will read a verse from John's

:26:35.:26:38.

gospel, the light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not

:26:39.:26:41.

overcome it. And the central three foot candle you can see in the

:26:42.:26:47.

lantern is already burning. The light will be taken from there,

:26:48.:26:55.

passed on first to the Duke of Cambridge, and then shared,

:26:56.:26:57.

person-to-person, right across the congregation.

:26:58.:27:01.

Paying their respects today are ambassadors from some of those

:27:02.:27:12.

countries affected by the attack. In fact, 200 representatives, we have

:27:13.:27:16.

been told, from the diplomatic corps, in the Abbey today. Including

:27:17.:27:21.

High Commissioners, ambassadors and various other members of staff as

:27:22.:27:26.

well. It's worth remembering, a point that has been made on numerous

:27:27.:27:30.

occasions, that people from 11 different countries were either

:27:31.:27:33.

killed or injured on Westminster Bridge two weeks ago. China,

:27:34.:27:44.

Romania, France, South Korea, Greece, Germany, Poland, Ireland,

:27:45.:27:50.

Italy and the United States. All of those countries are represented here

:27:51.:27:51.

today. As French president Francois

:27:52.:28:02.

Hollande on the day of the attack said, France, which has been struck

:28:03.:28:05.

so hard lately, knows what the British people are suffering today.

:28:06.:28:11.

And the Eiffel Tower was switched off, the lights there turned down

:28:12.:28:14.

out of respect to the victims of the attack. Also in Germany, the

:28:15.:28:20.

Chancellor Angela Merkel said her thoughts were with the British

:28:21.:28:23.

friends and all the people of London.

:28:24.:28:27.

And in further solidarity, Berlin's Brandenburg Gate was lit up in the

:28:28.:28:37.

colours of the Union Flag. And in Germany, a minute's silence was held

:28:38.:28:40.

on the steps of their parliament. And in Spain too, the home of a

:28:41.:28:53.

charade, at least 100 people attended a memorial to commemorate

:28:54.:29:03.

her. -- the home of Aysha Frade. The Spanish flag was flown at half-mast

:29:04.:29:07.

and three days of mourning was announced.

:29:08.:29:10.

And we see now outside Westminster Abbey, the arrival of the royal

:29:11.:29:23.

party. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are here alongside Prince

:29:24.:29:24.

Harry. Meeting the Dean, Dr John Hall and

:29:25.:29:37.

one of his first duties this morning, the Duke of Cambridge, will

:29:38.:29:42.

be to lay a wreath at the innocent victims memorial.

:29:43.:29:52.

Prince William visited St Thomas' Hospital to

:29:53.:29:53.

speak with those who had responded to the

:29:54.:29:55.

Palmer's honour at the foot of a traditional

:29:56.:30:00.

blue police lamp at the National Memorial

:30:01.:30:01.

He left a handwritten note which read:

:30:02.:30:08.

"For PC Keith Palmer and all those who have served our community

:30:09.:30:12.

so valiantly, your legacy is our way of life."

:30:13.:30:37.

The Innocent Victims' Memoerial has been outside the Great West Door of

:30:38.:30:44.

Westminster Abbey since 1996. It is there to remember civilians, men,

:30:45.:30:47.

women and children, who suffered death and torture and oppression

:30:48.:30:49.

throughout the world. Dr John Hall just telling the royal

:30:50.:31:43.

party they will now be led inside the Abbey, where they will take

:31:44.:31:47.

their seats with the rest of the congregation. Prince Harry was at

:31:48.:31:55.

this same memorial last year. He laid a wreath here to mark those

:31:56.:32:00.

killed in the terror attack in Tunisia in 2015. And the Dutchest of

:32:01.:32:05.

Cambridge, too, was speaking at a charity event, the day after the

:32:06.:32:12.

attack two weeks ago. She opened her remarks there by saying, "I know you

:32:13.:32:24.

want it join -- to join me by sending your thoughts and prayers to

:32:25.:32:28.

those affected by the terrible attack in Westminster." As they come

:32:29.:32:33.

through those Great West Doors, they will be introduced to the

:32:34.:32:37.

presentation party, which includes The Reverend Anthony Ball, the

:32:38.:32:42.

Canyon Steward, the Receiver General and the Mayor of London who we've

:32:43.:32:51.

spoken to already, Sadiq Khan. And the acting met Police Commissioner,

:32:52.:32:54.

Craig Mackey is there, he, of course a significant witness in the ongoing

:32:55.:32:59.

investigation. He was just yards away from PC Palmer. Yards away from

:33:00.:33:06.

PC Palmer when he was stabbed, protecting Parliament.

:33:07.:38:48.

The violent assault two weeks ago against Londoners and visitors

:38:49.:40:03.

to this city from around the world, and the killing of a police

:40:04.:40:07.

constable on duty at the Palace of Westminster, have

:40:08.:40:09.

Today we remember in particular those who lost their lives.

:40:10.:40:23.

Aysha Frade, Kurt Cochran, Leslie Rhodes, Keith Palmer,

:40:24.:40:32.

their families and friends, and all those who were injured.

:40:33.:40:37.

We commend them to the care and keeping of Almighty God.

:40:38.:40:44.

We give thanks for the vigilance and dedication of the police

:40:45.:40:50.

and security services, and we pray for them in their vital

:40:51.:40:57.

work of keeping our communities and nations safe from terror and random

:40:58.:41:02.

We pray today for the communities

:41:03.:41:08.

of our United Kingdom, so rich in their diversity,

:41:09.:41:15.

that we may all celebrate what each contributes and that we may live

:41:16.:41:18.

At a time of sorrow, a time when we are tempted

:41:19.:41:31.

The special service choir and congregation will now sing our first

:41:32.:41:47.

team. # In simple trust

:41:48.:41:56.

like theirs who heard # Where Jesus knelt

:41:57.:42:35.

to share with thee # Take from our souls

:42:36.:43:27.

the strain and stress # Breathe through the

:43:28.:44:11.

heats of our desire # Let sense be dumb,

:44:12.:44:37.

let flesh retire # Speak through the

:44:38.:44:49.

earthquake, wind, and fire Now the Home Secretary will bring a

:44:50.:45:24.

message of hope out of suffering from the book of Jeremiah.

:45:25.:45:29.

A voice is heard in Ramah, lamentation and bitter weeping.

:45:30.:45:36.

She refuses to be comforted for her children, because they are no more.

:45:37.:45:47.

Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears,

:45:48.:45:53.

They shall come back from the land of the enemy,

:45:54.:46:02.

Your children shall come back to their own country.

:46:03.:46:30.

# Out of the deep have I called unto thee, O Lord

:46:31.:46:35.

# O let thine ears consider well the voice of my complaint

:46:36.:46:49.

# If thou, Lord, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss

:46:50.:46:57.

# I look for the Lord, my soul doth wait for him.

:46:58.:47:24.

# Before the morning watch, I say, before the morning watch

:47:25.:47:45.

# O Israel, trust in the Lord, for with the Lord there is mercy

:47:46.:47:55.

# And with him is plenteous redemption

:47:56.:48:01.

# And he shall redeem Israel from all his sins

:48:02.:48:14.

# Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the holy ghost

:48:15.:48:25.

# As it was in the beginning is now and ever shall be

:48:26.:48:34.

Wanting to justify himself, a lawyer asked Jesus,

:48:35.:49:11.

Jesus replied, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho,

:49:12.:49:23.

and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went

:49:24.:49:27.

Now by chance a priest was going down that road,

:49:28.:49:36.

and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

:49:37.:49:42.

So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him,

:49:43.:49:48.

But a Samaritan while travelling came near him, and when he saw him,

:49:49.:49:59.

He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured

:50:00.:50:07.

Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn,

:50:08.:50:17.

The next day he took out two denarii,

:50:18.:50:25.

gave them to the innkeeper, and said, "Take care of him,

:50:26.:50:31.

and when I come back, I will repay you whatever

:50:32.:50:35.

Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbour to the man who fell

:50:36.:50:44.

He said, "The one who showed him mercy."

:50:45.:50:53.

Jesus said to him, "Go and do likewise."

:50:54.:51:06.

The choir will now sing a song of the new Jerusalem from Revelation

:51:07.:51:14.

chapter 20 one. CHOIR SINGS: A Song

:51:15.:51:33.

of the New Jerusalem The Dean of Westminster will now

:51:34.:56:17.

address the congregation. In the name of the Father and of the

:56:18.:56:23.

Son and of the Holy Spirit, Amen. No man is an island entire of

:56:24.:56:43.

itself, wrote John Donne, in 1624. Any man's death diminishes me

:56:44.:56:52.

because I am involved in mankind, and therefore never send to know for

:56:53.:56:59.

whom the Bell tolls. It tolls for thee. So we are all affected by the

:57:00.:57:06.

attack a fortnight ago on Westminster Bridge, and at the gates

:57:07.:57:12.

of the Palace of Westminster, and we are all left bewildered and

:57:13.:57:21.

disturbed. But our sense of loss and diminishment is pale by comparison

:57:22.:57:25.

with that of the families of those who died. Aysha Frade, Kurt Cochran,

:57:26.:57:36.

Leslie Rhodes on the bridge. And police constable Keith Palmer on

:57:37.:57:41.

duty at the gates of Parliament. And all those who were injured. Our

:57:42.:57:51.

hearts go out to them in sympathy and prayer and love. Anyone who has

:57:52.:57:59.

walked on Westminster Bridge or in Parliament Square in recent days has

:58:00.:58:02.

seen bunches of flowers in row upon row in the square, and tied to the

:58:03.:58:08.

lamp posts on the bridge. Candles have been lit and messages left.

:58:09.:58:19.

Messages of love and support. Messages too of determination and

:58:20.:58:23.

defiance in the face of evil and terror. Messages from younger and

:58:24.:58:30.

older people, friends and former colleagues of those who were killed.

:58:31.:58:35.

And simple statements of courage. We are not afraid. And we stand

:58:36.:58:41.

together. In his devotions on emergent

:58:42.:58:52.

occasions, John Donne, a poet and Dean of St Paul's Cathedral,

:58:53.:58:56.

stressed that our companionship, our mutual involvement and dependency is

:58:57.:59:03.

not within our own nation alone. He mentioned Europe as a whole, but

:59:04.:59:09.

today we would recognise our common citizenship more widely. London is a

:59:10.:59:16.

world city. With visitors from every country on the planet and residents

:59:17.:59:24.

drawn from 270 nationalities, and speaking 300 languages. Those killed

:59:25.:59:31.

and injured included Londoners, but also people from the United States

:59:32.:59:37.

of America, from Romania, France, South Korea, Italy, China,

:59:38.:59:48.

Australia, Greece, Portugal, Germany, Poland and Ireland. What

:59:49.:59:59.

happened a fortnight ago leaves us bewildered. What could possibly

:00:00.:00:05.

motivate a man to hire a car and take it from Birmingham to Brighton

:00:06.:00:09.

to London and then drive it fast at people he had never met, couldn't

:00:10.:00:16.

possibly know, against whom he had no personal grudge, no reason to

:00:17.:00:20.

hate them, and then run at the gates of the Palace of Westminster to

:00:21.:00:27.

cause another death? It seems likely that we shall never know. No doubt,

:00:28.:00:33.

it was an imitation of the attacks in nice -- Nice Anne Boleyn, but

:00:34.:00:40.

what on earth did he hope to achieve? -- Nice and Berlin. Such

:00:41.:00:47.

random acts of aggression are nothing new. We are reminded of the

:00:48.:00:54.

death of these earlier -- Fusilier Lee Rigby, the bomb attacks on the

:00:55.:01:04.

Underground and the London buses in 2005, and so much more here in

:01:05.:01:08.

earlier terror campaigns. And we are conscious of the determined and

:01:09.:01:13.

committed protection offered by the police and security services. Even

:01:14.:01:19.

so, every act of aggression leaves us disturbed and, somehow,

:01:20.:01:22.

diminished. Our first lesson reminded us of the

:01:23.:01:41.

suffering of the people of Judea. It referred to being sacked. They were

:01:42.:01:47.

taken into exile it Babylon itself, about 50 miles or so of modern

:01:48.:01:54.

Baghdad. The psalm tells us how they felt, by the waters of Babylon, we

:01:55.:02:00.

sat down and wept, when we remembered you, owe jerds. - other

:02:01.:02:12.

Jerusalem. They are suffering lasted and is reflected in the suffering of

:02:13.:02:17.

those in Iraq and Syria in our own day of the millions of people

:02:18.:02:21.

dispossessed and living in poverty and fear in refugee camps or in

:02:22.:02:29.

their own homes, but deprived of everything we're accustomed to rely

:02:30.:02:35.

on for our own health and welfare. We weep for the violence. For the

:02:36.:02:46.

hatred. For the loss of life. For all that divides and spoils our

:02:47.:02:50.

world. It was not meant to be like this. It should not be like this.

:02:51.:02:59.

Violence and hatred are not the answer. The best-known story Jesus

:03:00.:03:13.

told, the parabole of the good samaritan has a message for us. At

:03:14.:03:18.

first sight it seems quite simple - a man has been mugged and left half

:03:19.:03:23.

dead by the roadside. Two people hurry past, leaving him to find for

:03:24.:03:27.

himself. Not apparently caring about him at all. One man, by contrast,

:03:28.:03:38.

stops. And does whatever he can, in first aid, pouring on oil and wine

:03:39.:03:44.

to cleanse the man's wounds. And then bandaging him. He takes him to

:03:45.:03:50.

an inn and looked after him until the next day. Then he pays the inn

:03:51.:03:56.

keeper to care for him, promising to come back and cover the cost of any

:03:57.:04:03.

further help. That's all good in itself but the man who cares for the

:04:04.:04:08.

one who has been mugged is not of the same faith or nationality as

:04:09.:04:16.

him. In fact, the two communities, the dues and the samaritans have

:04:17.:04:21.

been enemies for centuries and despise and indeed hate one another.

:04:22.:04:28.

That enmity is o no bar to the samaritan doing a good deed for the

:04:29.:04:38.

Jew. Jesus praises the good samaritan. There is another twist to

:04:39.:04:43.

Jesus' story. The people who should have been the first responders. The

:04:44.:04:48.

ones who walked past quickly were of the same faith and nationality of

:04:49.:04:53.

the injured man. But they did nothing. They were bound by their

:04:54.:05:01.

religious duties not to touch a dead body and they feared the man was

:05:02.:05:12.

dead. Jesus condemns them. Condemns them for their lack of comoon

:05:13.:05:15.

decency. They've failed the test of compassion and love, the test of

:05:16.:05:22.

mercy, which Jesus rates far more highly than adherence to narrow

:05:23.:05:26.

religious conventions. In this and in other ways, during his ministry

:05:27.:05:32.

on Earth, Jesus leads us to leap over the barriers that divide us,

:05:33.:05:39.

whatever they are. And to reach out in brotherly and sisterly love to

:05:40.:05:44.

those of other faiths and nationalities. We have called this a

:05:45.:05:52.

Service of Hope and despite the horror of a random killing and

:05:53.:05:56.

hatred shown two weeks ago today, there is much for which we can be

:05:57.:06:04.

thankful. And much to offer us hope. The day after the Westminster

:06:05.:06:10.

attacks, Muslim, Jewish, Christian and other faith leaders condemned

:06:11.:06:17.

the violence and together stated that such aggressive and destructive

:06:18.:06:23.

acts, against innocent victims, were no part of Islam or any of the world

:06:24.:06:29.

faiths. Later a great concourse of people gathered at Trafalgar Square

:06:30.:06:34.

to witness a quiet demonstration of solidarity between the faith

:06:35.:06:38.

communities that make up our city and nation. The next day the

:06:39.:06:43.

archbishops of Canterbury and Westminster stood with the chief

:06:44.:06:52.

Rabbi and leading Shia and Sunni clerics just outside the Abbey, to

:06:53.:07:01.

demonstrate the mutual respect of the three Abrahamic faiths and their

:07:02.:07:06.

solidarity as leaders and four days later, 100 women, most of them

:07:07.:07:11.

Muslim, formed a human chain on Westminster Bridge. We Stand

:07:12.:07:18.

Together. Just as in this service the world faiths are represented and

:07:19.:07:23.

will pray together. Above all, for the gift of hope. In a few moments

:07:24.:07:33.

we shall light candles and make an Act of Commitment. Our prayer and

:07:34.:07:41.

commitment is to live together peacefully and respectfully, rich in

:07:42.:07:51.

our diversity and to sing together in harmony.

:07:52.:08:04.

Cellist Natalie Clein is in the nave and will play Song of the Birds.

:08:05.:08:32.

MUSIC: Song of the Birds performed by Natalie Clein.

:08:33.:12:33.

This is now the moment of togetherness, celebrated by

:12:34.:12:38.

candlelight. # I will lift up mine

:12:39.:12:52.

eyes unto the hills # My help cometh even from the Lord,

:12:53.:12:56.

who hath made heaven and earth # He will not suffer

:12:57.:13:13.

thy foot to be moved # And he that keepeth

:13:14.:13:18.

thee will not sleep # Behold, he that keepeth Israel

:13:19.:13:25.

shall neither slumber nor sleep # The Lord is thy defence

:13:26.:13:34.

upon thy right hand # So that the sun shall

:13:35.:13:48.

not burn thee by day # The Lord shall preserve

:13:49.:13:55.

thee from all evil # Yea, it is even he that

:13:56.:14:05.

shall keep thy soul # The Lord shall preserve thy

:14:06.:14:14.

going out and thy coming in # From this time

:14:15.:14:20.

forth for evermore. # # As it was in the beginning, as now

:14:21.:14:52.

and ever shall be. The light shines in

:14:53.:15:06.

the darkness, and the darkness O God, who through the mighty

:15:07.:15:19.

resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ has delivered us

:15:20.:15:30.

from the power of darkness and brought us into

:15:31.:15:34.

the light of your kingdom. Grant that as he was raised

:15:35.:15:37.

from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk

:15:38.:15:42.

in newness of life and seek those things that are above,

:15:43.:15:46.

where you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit,

:15:47.:15:51.

one God, world without end. Together let us affirm

:15:52.:15:54.

our shared humanity and our resolve to bring light

:15:55.:16:01.

and life to all. In the name of Almighty God,

:16:02.:16:08.

our creator, redeemer, and sustainer, and in remembrance

:16:09.:16:35.

of those who have died or been injured, let us pray for the gifts

:16:36.:16:39.

of healing and peace. In the name of God, The Most

:16:40.:16:52.

Gracious, The Most Merciful. O God, we raise our

:16:53.:17:00.

hands in prayer today. We ask you for your mercy and your

:17:01.:17:04.

blessing at and on this gathering. We ask you to bless the souls

:17:05.:17:07.

of those innocent people who lost their lives

:17:08.:17:10.

in the terrorist We ask you to grant peace,

:17:11.:17:12.

comfort and patience to their grieving families,

:17:13.:17:17.

friends and loved ones We ask you to keep our city

:17:18.:17:20.

and country safe and secure always. And we ask you to safeguard

:17:21.:17:28.

and strengthen the bonds of unity and friendship between our diverse

:17:29.:17:31.

communities, and to protect us from the forces of

:17:32.:17:33.

division and hatred always. Grant us peace,

:17:34.:17:48.

goodness, and blessing. Life, grace and kindness.

:17:49.:17:53.

Justice and mercy. Source of our life,

:17:54.:17:58.

bless us all together with the light of your presence,

:17:59.:18:03.

for in the light of your presence, you give us, our Living God,

:18:04.:18:06.

law and life, love and kindness, justice and mercy,

:18:07.:18:11.

blessing and peace. And in your eyes, it is good

:18:12.:18:16.

to bless all your people Blessed are you, God,

:18:17.:18:19.

blessing your peoples with peace. People are either your brothers in

:18:20.:18:39.

faith or similar to you in humanity. We are constantly reminded

:18:40.:18:44.

in the Islamic teachings of the Prophet and the Imams

:18:45.:18:49.

that the best of Muslims is one who utters beautiful words,

:18:50.:18:53.

who does virtuous deeds, who gives to the poor,
