Mike, you have had phenomenal success despite only being together

-a few months.

-That's right, yeah.

We're pretty lucky to have gotten so far.

I think it's maybe off the back of just previous projects

that we've been involved with.

And previous projects mentioned...

You know, you've been part of The Jepettos for an awful long time,

very well-known band.

Why did you feel that you needed a new entity

and a new way to express your music with New Portals?

We just really felt like we wanted to do something different.

It's Ruth and I who write the songs together

and we've just carried on the same kind of songwriting process

but wanted to add a different production edge to it.

So we started to work with two producers - Peter McCauley

and Matt Weir - so they're helping us take it in a new direction.

And with yourself and Ruth being husband and wife,

it's going OK so far.

How is that for everyone else involved?

It seems to be OK. It's the way we've always done it,

so we've always written together and always been in bands together,

so we're used to it and people seem to get on OK with us.

Is there a danger, being involved with so many different projects,

that you're spreading yourself too thin and that maybe one project

will win over the others, that others might get neglected along the way?

It's a good question. I think we just need to be focused.

So at the minute this is what we're focusing on, New Portals.

We may go back and do some more of The Jepettos, our folk stuff,

but for now we're focused on this, so hopefully that'll help us.

And briefly, Mike, tell me about the name of the group.

Where did you get that from?

I'm not sure exactly where the name came from.

I think we just thought portals were kind of a cool thing,

as, like, a doorway to another dimension,

and we just sort of thought music could be that.

It is, certainly, to us

whenever we listen to music, and I guess it is for most people.

If they get the right music,

it can really help you sort of get into an ethereal sort of feel.

And we just thought it was a cool name for a band.

Well, it seems that it's working,

it's doing all the right things for you at the moment.

But I try a wee bit!
