This week, the baker's car show you felt was cream of the crop,

0:00:020:00:04

and are older people being short-changed by the BBC?

0:00:040:00:08

All that and more in the show that lets you have your say on

0:00:080:00:12

the BBC's television programmes. Get your voice heard in there.

0:00:120:00:15

Welcome to your Points Of View.

0:00:150:00:17

First this week, the bodice-ripping

0:00:270:00:29

Cornish drama that galloped back onto our screens last Sunday night.

0:00:290:00:33

The action was coming thick and fast in the opening instalment of

0:00:370:00:39

Poldark's third series, beginning with a dramatic clifftop rescue.

0:00:390:00:44

Over the course of 60 minutes, there were deaths,

0:00:440:00:47

a birth and a wedding, in an episode that also saw Ross propose

0:00:470:00:52

a truce with archenemy George Warleggan.

0:00:520:00:55

And there would be no need for our paths to cross...

0:00:550:00:58

ever again.

0:00:580:00:59

You were delighted to see Poldark setting sail once more.

0:01:050:01:09

I waited for Poldark season three with great anticipation.

0:01:180:01:22

And it didn't disappoint. So much in that first episode.

0:01:220:01:26

In fact, blink and you'd miss a death or a birth.

0:01:260:01:29

Only a hint of chest hair from the lovely Mr Turner.

0:01:290:01:32

And by the way, happy birthday for tomorrow, Aidan.

0:01:320:01:35

Many happy returns from us, too, Mr Turner, if you are watching.

0:01:350:01:39

Aidan's appeal, it appears, well and truly spanning generations.

0:01:390:01:43

Fingers across the nation

0:01:580:01:59

no doubt crossed in the hope of some shirt-stripping action tonight.

0:01:590:02:03

Poldark's back on BBC One at nine o'clock.

0:02:030:02:06

Also making a comeback on BBC One recently, the show that aims

0:02:060:02:09

to transform the homes and lives of families across the country.

0:02:090:02:13

-Do you think it's possible?

-ALL:

-Yes!

0:02:130:02:16

In a series first, the DIY SOS team, joined by an army of

0:02:160:02:20

volunteers, were given just nine days to build

0:02:200:02:23

a brand-new house for two deserving dads

0:02:230:02:26

and their four adopted children,

0:02:260:02:28

some of whom had complex special needs.

0:02:280:02:30

You need to be very proud of yourselves, you really, really do.

0:02:300:02:33

I'm sorry, I'm crying again. I don't cry.

0:02:330:02:38

I've not stopped all morning!

0:02:380:02:39

LAUGHTER

0:02:390:02:41

Thank you, everyone, for helping me be independent.

0:02:410:02:47

This was a real emotional journey for some of you.

0:02:470:02:50

Earlier this year, presenter Nick Knowles had sounded

0:03:240:03:26

a bit of an SOS about the series' future,

0:03:260:03:29

saying it had become more and more difficult to make with the money

0:03:290:03:32

available, and that the team had yet to hear about a recommission.

0:03:320:03:36

And that led to concerns from you that the DIY SOS team could

0:03:360:03:41

soon be downing their tools for good.

0:03:410:03:43

Well, I'm pleased to say, in this instance,

0:03:540:03:56

we do have some good news for you.

0:03:560:03:58

We asked the BBC about DIY SOS's future and they've confirmed

0:03:580:04:02

the series is much-loved and it will be returning next year.

0:04:020:04:06

Oh, he's gone all emotional. Oh. Oh, mate.

0:04:060:04:10

It was one year ago this week,

0:04:100:04:11

as the EU referendum campaign was reaching fever pitch,

0:04:110:04:15

that the senseless murder of a young Labour MP shocked the nation.

0:04:150:04:19

Airing on BBC Two on Tuesday night,

0:04:200:04:22

the documentary Jo Cox: Death Of An MP retraced the activities of

0:04:220:04:26

the parliamentarian's killer in the days leading up to the attack.

0:04:260:04:30

The programme included access to the police investigation,

0:04:300:04:33

and contributions from Jo's family and friends.

0:04:330:04:36

I mean, I was very much in shock,

0:04:360:04:39

but moved very quickly into the practicalities of,

0:04:390:04:42

how do I do Jo proud...

0:04:420:04:45

..in...

0:04:510:04:52

..in making sure that the kids are OK?

0:04:530:04:56

The programme was, you felt, a touching tribute to the politician.

0:04:560:05:00

Now, on-screen diversity has become

0:05:200:05:23

a hot topic in the broadcasting world of late,

0:05:230:05:26

and the BBC's track record has come in for some criticism.

0:05:260:05:29

This year, Ofcom research revealed the public felt

0:05:290:05:32

the representation of older people,

0:05:320:05:34

women and ethnic minorities on the BBC was neutral at best.

0:05:340:05:39

We recently heard from one viewer who feels the BBC is selling

0:05:390:05:43

older people short.

0:05:430:05:44

So, what is the BBC doing to ensure older people are adequately

0:06:000:06:03

reflected on screen?

0:06:030:06:05

We sent Christine along to find out,

0:06:050:06:07

and put her point of view to one of the corporation's commissioners.

0:06:070:06:10

-Morning, Christine.

-Morning.

0:06:100:06:12

I feel that the BBC don't adequately represent us,

0:06:150:06:22

our interests and issues. What's your response to that?

0:06:220:06:27

It's really important that the BBC reflects the UK, up and down,

0:06:270:06:31

and I think diversity means so many things, but to me, ultimately,

0:06:310:06:34

it means the whole population, the BBC's for the whole population,

0:06:340:06:37

and we should be creating programmes that appeal to everybody.

0:06:370:06:40

So when I look at TV coverage on the BBC, I see

0:06:400:06:42

a lot of older people well represented.

0:06:420:06:44

You know, from David Attenborough,

0:06:440:06:45

presenting the wonderful wildlife documentaries, to Mary Berry.

0:06:450:06:49

Or I look at the election coverage and see people like David Dimbleby presenting.

0:06:490:06:53

We see that older viewers are watching a lot of the BBC.

0:06:530:06:55

So we're really pleased that older viewers,

0:06:550:06:57

who are sophisticated television viewers who watch so much,

0:06:570:07:00

are finding things on the BBC that they really enjoy.

0:07:000:07:02

That's something that we're really proud of.

0:07:020:07:04

Couldn't more be done to show the positive aspects of older people?

0:07:040:07:09

Certainly, I know from the work we do at the BBC that we are always

0:07:090:07:11

looking to find ways of portraying people in different lights.

0:07:110:07:16

You know, the research that's done about older viewers shows

0:07:160:07:18

exactly what you're saying,

0:07:180:07:20

they don't just want to be perceived as, you know, getting older

0:07:200:07:25

and staying at home and not doing anything in their lives.

0:07:250:07:28

When you see people dancing in Strictly Come Dancing,

0:07:280:07:30

or you see some of the programmes we do, like DIY SOS,

0:07:300:07:34

where people are volunteering, and that can include older people as well as young.

0:07:340:07:38

I think we are really trying to harness that, to find those areas.

0:07:380:07:41

But overall, I do agree,

0:07:410:07:43

older people want to be seen to have a wide range of interests,

0:07:430:07:47

and that's something that we constantly try to tap into

0:07:470:07:50

in the programme ideas that we come up with.

0:07:500:07:52

I have not seen coverage of discrimination towards older people.

0:07:520:07:57

How can you account for that?

0:07:570:07:59

There's a study that was done by the Creative Diversity Network,

0:07:590:08:02

several years ago, looking at portrayal of different age groups.

0:08:020:08:05

Actually, for the majority of older viewers,

0:08:050:08:08

they don't believe there is a kind of negative portrayal problem.

0:08:080:08:13

Their main concern is to see good programmes.

0:08:130:08:16

I had a series I commissioned called Holding Back The Years that

0:08:160:08:18

featured people like Angela Rippon and a range of people who went and

0:08:180:08:24

looked at what it's like to be 60 or over in the UK today,

0:08:240:08:27

and that threw up some really surprising things.

0:08:270:08:30

And the main thing I took from it was that there's actually a whole

0:08:300:08:33

spectrum of opinions about what it's like to be over 60 in Britain today.

0:08:330:08:37

So, will you now change anything as a result of this discussion?

0:08:370:08:42

You've raised some really interesting issues and I'll

0:08:420:08:44

certainly take that back with me and use it to inform my future

0:08:440:08:47

conversations about programme ideas.

0:08:470:08:49

This week saw BBC Four turning Japanese as a three-week

0:09:220:09:26

season of programmes dedicated to the country got underway.

0:09:260:09:29

Kicking things off on Monday night was

0:09:290:09:31

a new three-part series from Dr James Fox.

0:09:310:09:34

In the first episode of The Art Of Japanese Life,

0:09:340:09:37

the art historian explored the relationship between the country's culture and nature.

0:09:370:09:43

Travelling through mountainous forests and visiting shrines

0:09:430:09:46

and temples along the way.

0:09:460:09:49

-It's a beautiful tree.

-Yes.

0:09:490:09:52

And how old do you think it is?

0:09:520:09:54

We think over 300 years.

0:09:540:09:58

Over 300 years old.

0:09:580:09:59

By all accounts, James's journey is off to a promising start.

0:10:010:10:04

And you singled the presenter out for particular praise,

0:10:120:10:15

feeling he deserves a wider audience.

0:10:150:10:18

Other feedback we received on the good doctor was rather more...

0:10:280:10:31

How do I put this?

0:10:310:10:33

Straight to the point.

0:10:330:10:34

Whatever floats your boat, Lorraine.

0:10:360:10:38

As Dr Fox set out on his jaunt around Japan,

0:10:380:10:41

over on BBC Two last weekend,

0:10:410:10:43

another presenter's tour around Europe was coming to an end.

0:10:430:10:47

In Paul Hollywood's Big Continental Road Trip,

0:10:490:10:52

the motor-mad Bake-Off giant aimed to discover just what makes our

0:10:520:10:55

European cousins tick when it comes to cars.

0:10:550:10:58

After pit stops in Italy and Germany,

0:10:580:11:00

last Sunday's final episode saw Paul arrive in France.

0:11:000:11:05

12 roads converge at this point

0:11:050:11:07

without a single road marking to help drivers out.

0:11:070:11:10

Apparently, you should give way to the right.

0:11:120:11:14

Look at them, look at them, look at them!

0:11:140:11:16

-But it seems no-one's told the French.

-He doesn't care.

0:11:160:11:19

Pretty sure that's not Paul's favourite kind of jam!

0:11:190:11:22

Crumbs, praise indeed.

0:11:330:11:34

And, speaking of that other car series,

0:11:340:11:36

if they are ever looking for a new front man,

0:11:360:11:38

it appears they could do worse than to consider a bread baker.

0:11:380:11:42

But, not everyone was delighted

0:11:460:11:48

to see the BBC chucking more dough at yet another motoring series.

0:11:480:11:52

No plans for anything like that, as far as we're aware, Tom.

0:12:110:12:14

And finally this week there's been a big song and dance

0:12:140:12:17

about a recent proposal in the daytime drama, Doctors.

0:12:170:12:21

What the...?!

0:12:220:12:24

Last Friday's episode saw Heston pop the question to Ruhma

0:12:250:12:29

in spectacular style,

0:12:290:12:31

with a Bollywood-inspired song and dance routine.

0:12:310:12:34

-# My one and only Mehbuba

-Mehbuba... #

0:12:340:12:38

How could we refuse such a polite request?

0:13:100:13:13

We're back right here on BBC One next Sunday at 5:10pm.

0:13:130:13:16

Until then, we will leave you with a bit of that Bollywood bonanza.

0:13:160:13:20

Have a good week!

0:13:200:13:21

# Me baaho me nigahon

0:13:210:13:24

# Dil duba, dil duba

0:13:240:13:27

# Mehbuba, Mehbuba

0:13:270:13:30

# Ah-ah-ah ahhh

0:13:300:13:32

# Mehbuba, Mehbuba. #
