If starting a new life halfway around the world

0:00:020:00:05

promised your family more quality time together,

0:00:050:00:08

you might be sorely tempted,

0:00:080:00:11

but what if it meant having to leave one family member behind?

0:00:110:00:15

That was the dilemma facing the Cornish family back in 2014.

0:00:150:00:20

We've caught up with them two years later to find out if they

0:00:200:00:23

took the plunge or stayed put.

0:00:230:00:25

Pulling pints and being a travelling teacher meant James and Lisa Cornish

0:00:270:00:30

hardly ever saw their two little boys...

0:00:300:00:33

I would absolutely love for us to feel like a family again,

0:00:330:00:36

and for me to feel like I'm a mum and a wife again.

0:00:360:00:40

..so they were considering moving lock, stock and barrel

0:00:400:00:42

to the other side of the world...

0:00:420:00:44

I'll get more time to spend with the boys in the evenings.

0:00:440:00:46

I'll be less tired because I won't be working 100 hours per week.

0:00:460:00:49

..but moving to Australia would mean James saying goodbye to his daughter

0:00:490:00:53

for months at a time.

0:00:530:00:55

This week in Australia is going to be really important,

0:00:550:00:58

because it's going to change our lives, really,

0:00:580:01:02

whichever way we choose.

0:01:020:01:03

Two years on, where do the Cornishes call home?

0:01:030:01:07

It's something we've done before,

0:01:070:01:09

but we're still, kind of, learning what it means for us here.

0:01:090:01:13

With more than a quarter of its population born abroad,

0:01:390:01:42

Australia's long been a dream destination for people in search of

0:01:420:01:46

a better life.

0:01:460:01:48

Around 34,000 UK residents flock to the country every year,

0:01:480:01:53

hoping the healthy, outdoor lifestyle and prosperous economy

0:01:530:01:57

will improve their standard of living.

0:01:570:01:59

James and Lisa Cornish were desperate for more time together

0:02:010:02:04

with sons Sammy and Louis,

0:02:040:02:06

and believed Australia could be the answer.

0:02:060:02:10

However, moving would come at a price,

0:02:100:02:13

as James's daughter from a previous relationship would be

0:02:130:02:16

left behind in the UK.

0:02:160:02:19

Even if the family could persuade Lauryn to visit regularly,

0:02:190:02:22

James faced the prospect of being separated from her

0:02:220:02:25

for most of the year.

0:02:250:02:27

The Cornishes' journey began with a 10,000-mile flight from London to

0:02:280:02:32

Melbourne via Dubai.

0:02:320:02:34

It was the family's first time in Australia,

0:02:340:02:37

and the reality of just how far they'd come had hit home.

0:02:370:02:41

It really puts it into perspective how far away Australia

0:02:410:02:44

is from England.

0:02:440:02:45

The flight had taken its toll on Sammy and Louis,

0:02:450:02:48

but Lisa and James were raring to go.

0:02:480:02:50

We're really excited about the week.

0:02:500:02:52

It'll be nice to see everything in the flesh,

0:02:520:02:54

so we've been looking forward to it.

0:02:540:02:56

If the week went according to plan,

0:02:560:02:58

Lauryn faced the 20-hour flight on a regular basis.

0:02:580:03:02

It means I get to see what they're doing, and be a part of their lives.

0:03:020:03:07

The family faced a life-changing decision

0:03:070:03:09

come the end of their trial week.

0:03:090:03:11

In 2014,

0:03:140:03:16

James and Lisa Cornish lived above a pub near Sheffield with

0:03:160:03:19

son Sammy, who was then five, Louis, who was two,

0:03:190:03:22

and James's daughter Lauryn, who was 13.

0:03:220:03:26

James had been running the pub since 2013 after taking

0:03:260:03:29

voluntary redundancy as an accountant,

0:03:290:03:31

but being a landlord had proven much harder

0:03:310:03:34

than anyone had predicted.

0:03:340:03:35

I've been working much more than we expected -

0:03:360:03:40

up to, sort of, 100 hours per week.

0:03:400:03:42

For James, the pub has completely took over his life.

0:03:420:03:46

If he's not running the business, nobody is.

0:03:460:03:50

Lisa's job, as an accountancy lecturer at colleges

0:03:500:03:52

across the country, meant she was also missing out

0:03:520:03:55

on quality time with the children.

0:03:550:03:57

There have been weeks when I've left the house on a Sunday evening,

0:03:580:04:02

and I haven't seen the kids until the Thursday evening.

0:04:020:04:04

And there was no let-up at the weekends.

0:04:040:04:07

With Lisa drafted in to help James behind the bar,

0:04:070:04:10

Sammy and Louis had to stay with their grandparents.

0:04:100:04:13

It's a horrible feeling to feel like somebody else is...

0:04:130:04:17

enjoying spending time with your kids all the time.

0:04:170:04:21

The couple had reached breaking point.

0:04:210:04:23

It does upset me that I can't spend the time with the boys.

0:04:230:04:26

It does cause tension, just because we've both been so tired,

0:04:260:04:30

erm, and so stressed with everything that it's unavoidable.

0:04:300:04:35

Desperate for more quality time together,

0:04:370:04:39

Lisa and James were considering a drastic change -

0:04:390:04:42

moving to the other side of the world.

0:04:420:04:44

It might be slightly naive, but, at the moment, Australia,

0:04:450:04:50

to me, I'm...

0:04:500:04:53

I feel as though it's going to give us that family life together that

0:04:530:04:56

we just don't have here in the UK.

0:04:560:04:58

And it will strengthen our relationship

0:04:580:05:01

and bring us all closer together.

0:05:010:05:03

But while Australia could reunite James and Lisa with their boys,

0:05:030:05:06

it would mean James leaving a daughter behind.

0:05:060:05:10

Lauryn's my daughter from my first marriage,

0:05:100:05:12

and she spends half the time with us and half the time with her mum.

0:05:120:05:16

If we do decide to move out to Australia,

0:05:160:05:19

she will stay here until she's 18.

0:05:190:05:22

13-year-old Lauryn was faced with the prospect of spending

0:05:220:05:25

months at a time without seeing her dad and his family.

0:05:250:05:29

It's just... It's not ten miles down the road any more,

0:05:300:05:33

it's across the world.

0:05:330:05:35

I'd miss them a lot if they went.

0:05:350:05:37

But she understood their life couldn't carry on as it was.

0:05:370:05:41

I want them to have a better life than over here.

0:05:410:05:44

James and Lisa faced an agonising decision.

0:05:440:05:47

Being a father to her and to the boys,

0:05:470:05:49

it makes my decision much more difficult.

0:05:490:05:53

I would miss her, and I think the boys would miss her more so.

0:05:550:05:59

I think the boys really dote on her.

0:05:590:06:03

Lauryn could spend holidays down under,

0:06:030:06:05

but if she didn't like Australia,

0:06:050:06:07

Lisa and James's dream could be over.

0:06:070:06:10

That would be, like, a game-changer, really,

0:06:100:06:14

because I don't think that I could, erm...

0:06:140:06:20

spend my life without her.

0:06:200:06:21

James knew something had to give if he was to spend quality time

0:06:230:06:26

with his wife and young sons,

0:06:260:06:28

but, to make a move work,

0:06:280:06:30

he had to persuade Lauryn Australia could be her home for part of

0:06:300:06:33

the year, and come to terms with being separated from her

0:06:330:06:37

for months at a time.

0:06:370:06:38

The family visited Melbourne,

0:06:450:06:47

Australia's second most populated city

0:06:470:06:49

and capital of the state of Victoria.

0:06:490:06:52

Their temporary home was a three-bedroom house in Williamstown,

0:06:520:06:55

a popular coastal suburb 15 miles from the city centre.

0:06:550:06:59

Wakey-wakey!

0:07:020:07:05

It was the family's first chance to see what living on

0:07:050:07:08

the other side of the world could be like.

0:07:080:07:11

It looks lovely.

0:07:110:07:12

-Let's go in and have a look.

-Come on, then.

0:07:120:07:15

Oh!

0:07:150:07:17

It looks lovely. Open-staired.

0:07:170:07:18

Yeah. It's really modern, actually. I like that.

0:07:180:07:21

First impressions were good, but then...

0:07:210:07:24

I'm not so sure there that would be enough space.

0:07:240:07:27

-No, we're used to more space than this.

-Long-term.

0:07:270:07:29

Upstairs, Lauryn wasn't impressed with the views.

0:07:290:07:33

-It's not unique.

-There's no...

0:07:330:07:36

real wildlife or anything to look at.

0:07:360:07:40

They had just arrived, but James and Lauryn's thoughts

0:07:400:07:43

were already turning towards possibly being separated.

0:07:430:07:46

It's something that we've, kind of, put on the back-burner to say,

0:07:460:07:50

"How do we all really feel about

0:07:500:07:54

"spending four or five months apart at a time?"

0:07:540:07:57

This week in Australia is going to be really important,

0:07:570:08:00

because it's going to change our lives, really,

0:08:000:08:04

whichever way we choose.

0:08:040:08:05

It was a case of upstairs-downstairs for the Cornishes in the UK,

0:08:090:08:14

living above the pub James managed.

0:08:140:08:16

We've got three bedrooms.

0:08:160:08:18

The boys share a room, and Lauryn's got her own bedroom as well,

0:08:180:08:21

but we don't have a huge amount of space.

0:08:210:08:23

It doesn't really feel like home to us.

0:08:230:08:25

Whenever we sit upstairs and get any time off,

0:08:250:08:29

it feels like people are in your house.

0:08:290:08:32

More space was at the top of James' wish list for a property down under.

0:08:320:08:36

Modern, spacious, with four or five bedrooms.

0:08:360:08:41

Plenty of room for the kids to play.

0:08:410:08:43

James and Lisa had a budget of £250,000-£300,000

0:08:460:08:50

for a home in Australia,

0:08:500:08:51

but could possibly stretch further depending on their salaries.

0:08:510:08:56

To give them an idea of Melbourne's property market,

0:08:560:08:58

we showed them three houses -

0:08:580:09:00

two based on their budget,

0:09:000:09:02

and a third based on everything they wanted.

0:09:020:09:05

Only after they had seen each one did they find out its value.

0:09:050:09:08

The search began in Werribee, a suburb 20 miles west of the city.

0:09:120:09:16

With good commuting links, plenty of schools and green spaces,

0:09:160:09:19

it's a family-friendly area which could have been perfect

0:09:190:09:23

for the Cornishes.

0:09:230:09:24

I really like the area, kind of, driving through.

0:09:240:09:26

The outside wasn't overly impressive.

0:09:260:09:29

It looks quite...dated.

0:09:290:09:32

But appearances can be deceptive.

0:09:320:09:35

Oh.

0:09:350:09:36

Oh, this wasn't what I was expecting.

0:09:370:09:39

Now... I want to see the rest of it now.

0:09:400:09:42

Yeah, I do, too.

0:09:420:09:43

The property had the open-plan interiors Lisa wanted,

0:09:430:09:47

but did it have the space James craved?

0:09:470:09:49

I think once we get the kids' toys in here and everything,

0:09:490:09:52

I think we'd struggle for space and we'd feel cramped again.

0:09:520:09:54

The kitchen wasn't perfect either.

0:09:540:09:57

-Certain parts of it...

-Yeah.

-..feel modern and updated,

0:09:570:10:00

and other parts don't.

0:10:000:10:02

The house did have five bedrooms, though,

0:10:020:10:04

meaning Sammy and Louis could have their own rooms,

0:10:040:10:07

and Lauryn, too, if she visited,

0:10:070:10:09

and there was plenty of room for storage, too.

0:10:090:10:12

Wow! This is a walk-in wardrobe and a half.

0:10:120:10:15

It's just that everything at home is so cramped.

0:10:170:10:21

So, did the house have all the space needed?

0:10:210:10:24

Oh, gosh.

0:10:240:10:25

-Wow.

-Wow.

0:10:250:10:26

Not in every sense. LISA LAUGHS

0:10:260:10:29

I don't know who was going to fit in that bath.

0:10:290:10:31

-Louis.

-Louis!

0:10:310:10:33

-LAUGHTER

-Oh, I can't take this seriously.

0:10:330:10:35

Fortunately, the garden wasn't quite as cramped.

0:10:370:10:41

This is far more what we were looking for.

0:10:410:10:44

You like this one, don't you?

0:10:440:10:45

Yeah, and from the windows upstairs,

0:10:450:10:47

you'll have a view of the garden and the trees and things.

0:10:470:10:51

The house was somewhere Lauryn could call a second home,

0:10:510:10:54

but could the family afford it on their £250,000-£300,000 budget?

0:10:540:10:59

OK, how much do you think this one's worth?

0:10:590:11:02

210,000.

0:11:020:11:04

It's going to go under the 200 mark, maybe something around 185, 190.

0:11:040:11:10

I'm going to say 230.

0:11:100:11:12

230?

0:11:120:11:13

-OK.

-Shall we have a look?

-Yes, go on, then.

0:11:130:11:16

-Oof!

-Oof!

-Oh, dear.

0:11:160:11:18

Wow. 262.

0:11:180:11:19

That's a lot more than I was expecting...

0:11:190:11:21

-That's not justifiable, to me, at all.

-No.

0:11:210:11:25

It was within budget, but James and Lisa were clearly hoping for

0:11:250:11:28

much more for their money.

0:11:280:11:30

Would property number two fit the bill?

0:11:300:11:32

It was situated in Tarneit,

0:11:350:11:37

just 15 miles from Melbourne's central business district.

0:11:370:11:41

Offering parks, schools,

0:11:410:11:43

shopping centres and the modern style of housing Lisa was after,

0:11:430:11:46

it could have been a perfect match.

0:11:460:11:49

That's way bigger!

0:11:490:11:50

-This looks nice and big.

-It looks lovely.

0:11:510:11:54

Straight away, the property looked more promising.

0:11:540:11:57

-Oh, gosh, James, it goes back quite a way as well.

-Wow.

0:11:570:12:00

After living over a pub, all that room was definitely a bonus...

0:12:000:12:04

It's got three living rooms.

0:12:040:12:06

..and there was one space James was more than happy with.

0:12:060:12:10

Oh, wow! This is my room!

0:12:100:12:11

Yeah, so I can see, sort of, like, a little bar area in the corner.

0:12:110:12:14

But the garden wasn't ideal for everyone.

0:12:140:12:17

Yeah, there's loads of space - it's just not two-year-old friendly.

0:12:170:12:21

The house inside, though, is fantastic.

0:12:210:12:24

I'm a little bit disappointed with the outside.

0:12:240:12:26

Downstairs had provoked mixed reactions, but, upstairs,

0:12:260:12:29

the master bedroom with a balcony appealed to both Lisa and James.

0:12:290:12:34

It's not like it's got an amazing view or anything like that,

0:12:340:12:37

but it's green and it's pleasant.

0:12:370:12:40

This is a lovely en-suite.

0:12:400:12:41

His and hers sinks.

0:12:410:12:42

His and hers sinks...

0:12:420:12:44

This house would also give Lauryn her own bedroom,

0:12:450:12:48

and that could seal the deal when it came to persuading her to visit,

0:12:480:12:52

but, with a budget of between £250,000 and £300,000,

0:12:520:12:56

was it affordable?

0:12:560:12:58

OK, so what do you think it's worth, then?

0:12:580:13:01

I'd say probably about £270,000.

0:13:020:13:06

I was going to say a little bit more than that.

0:13:060:13:09

I think round about £290,000, £300,000.

0:13:090:13:11

-Shall we have a look?

-Yeah.

0:13:110:13:13

Let's have a look.

0:13:140:13:16

Wow!

0:13:160:13:19

-Spot-on.

-295.

-You get a lot for your money.

0:13:190:13:23

I think if we had the dream,

0:13:230:13:26

it would be a new build with this space and a bigger garden.

0:13:260:13:31

Next up, the dream property, a house that, if money was no object,

0:13:330:13:38

could offer everything the Cornishes wanted.

0:13:380:13:41

The four-bedroom bungalow was in Sanctuary Lakes,

0:13:410:13:44

one of 20 modern estates making up the semirural but family-friendly

0:13:440:13:48

suburb of Point Cook.

0:13:480:13:50

And first impressions were good.

0:13:500:13:53

Every single house in this street I'd quite happily live in, I think.

0:13:530:13:57

Lisa was sold already.

0:13:570:14:00

Oh, wow.

0:14:000:14:02

That is just stunning.

0:14:020:14:04

Oh, James!

0:14:040:14:06

-Oh, my God.

-Crikey.

0:14:080:14:10

-And this is just the en-suite.

-Yeah.

0:14:110:14:13

Further down the hallway, something everyone could enjoy.

0:14:130:14:18

Oh, wow.

0:14:180:14:20

Oh, it's a proper cinema room.

0:14:200:14:22

Just imagine when that's got projected.

0:14:220:14:26

-I'd definitely come out and visit!

-With everyone impressed,

0:14:260:14:29

James was already wondering how he could afford it.

0:14:290:14:32

I think I'd get two jobs to get this house.

0:14:320:14:35

-It is a dream house.

-It's perfect.

0:14:350:14:37

And outside, a chance for the boys to dip their toes into what life in

0:14:370:14:41

Australia could be like.

0:14:410:14:44

-Tickles!

-How would you like to live here and have this in your garden?

-Yeah!

0:14:440:14:48

The house offered everything James and Lisa wanted,

0:14:480:14:51

but would Lauryn be happy with it as a second home?

0:14:510:14:54

It'd be worth not living with you!

0:14:540:14:57

Well, it wouldn't, but

0:14:570:14:59

it would at the same time,

0:14:590:15:01

knowing that I'd get to come out to this for two or three months, yeah,

0:15:010:15:05

-maybe more.

-With everyone won over,

0:15:050:15:08

they were keen to find out if their £250,000 to £300,000 budget would

0:15:080:15:13

be enough to buy a house like this.

0:15:130:15:15

-It's going to be a lot.

-I think it's going to be nearer £550,000.

0:15:180:15:22

-£550,000?

-Yeah.

0:15:220:15:25

Time to see who was right.

0:15:250:15:27

-£404,000.

-Oh, that's unbelievable!

0:15:290:15:33

It was £100,000 over-budget.

0:15:330:15:35

But... Oh, we could still have that.

0:15:350:15:38

That almost makes me cry!

0:15:380:15:40

I'm completely and utterly speechless that we could get

0:15:400:15:43

this house in this location for that amount of money.

0:15:430:15:48

It had been a day of real ups and downs for the Cornishes.

0:15:480:15:52

Property one was bang on budget, but short on space.

0:15:520:15:56

Property two had plenty of room,

0:15:560:15:58

but it just wasn't the house James and Lisa had based their dreams on.

0:15:580:16:02

But property three had everything the family wanted,

0:16:020:16:05

and with the right salaries could still be affordable.

0:16:050:16:09

So, based on the houses that we've seen in Australia, we're voting for...

0:16:090:16:14

-Australia!

-Undecided.

0:16:240:16:26

No surprise that we voted for the same thing,

0:16:260:16:29

given how pleased we were with the last house.

0:16:290:16:32

We could never afford that at home.

0:16:320:16:34

Lauryn would take a bit more work,

0:16:410:16:43

but seeing the dream house had got Lisa and James excited about a

0:16:430:16:47

potential future in Australia.

0:16:470:16:49

Still, the couple knew that to afford the property,

0:16:490:16:52

they'd need to be pulling in a good income.

0:16:520:16:55

In the UK, Lisa had spent 11 years as an accountant before becoming an

0:16:570:17:01

accountancy lecturer.

0:17:010:17:03

It was a job she loved and hoped to continue Down Under.

0:17:030:17:06

I'm fortunate enough to be able to teach them all levels through their

0:17:060:17:09

accountancy qualification,

0:17:090:17:11

and eventually see them leaving as a fully qualified accountant.

0:17:110:17:15

James planned to call time on being a landlord and return to accounting.

0:17:150:17:19

And research had given him confidence work would be available.

0:17:190:17:23

Mainly we've looked at sort of the central government roles,

0:17:230:17:26

which is what we're used to here in the UK.

0:17:260:17:29

Melbourne's a leading financial centre in Australia,

0:17:310:17:34

which was good news for the couple.

0:17:340:17:36

But Lisa knew just how much was at stake.

0:17:360:17:39

Unless we can find a job at the right salary level, there's no way

0:17:390:17:42

on Earth we're going to be able to financially make the move.

0:17:420:17:45

We had arranged for visa applicant Lisa to visit Box Hill Institute,

0:17:450:17:50

a college east of Melbourne, where she met Colin Hardie,

0:17:500:17:53

Head of the Business Studies Department.

0:17:530:17:56

To get a teaching job here,

0:17:560:17:58

the minimum qualification is a certificate in training and assessment.

0:17:580:18:01

That will take you about a month.

0:18:010:18:04

You have certainly more than the minimum to get employed as a teacher.

0:18:040:18:08

However, in the current environment,

0:18:080:18:10

we would highly recommend more qualifications,

0:18:100:18:13

higher level qualifications, breadth and depth,

0:18:130:18:15

and that will maximise your chances of employment,

0:18:150:18:18

and also maximise your salary.

0:18:180:18:20

It sounded like Lisa might be back at school herself if she was to

0:18:200:18:24

stand out from candidates chasing lecturing roles.

0:18:240:18:27

Which meant more pressure for James to find the perfect job.

0:18:270:18:31

To get to the bottom of accounting opportunities,

0:18:310:18:34

he met Susan Drews from one of the city's prominent recruitment companies.

0:18:340:18:38

So, really, looking at your experience,

0:18:380:18:41

your skills in government, I believe could be very transferable into

0:18:410:18:45

the state government here or a public sector environment.

0:18:450:18:47

James could be in demand.

0:18:470:18:49

Back at Box Hill, Lisa was keen to hear her potential salary

0:18:490:18:53

if she found a job.

0:18:530:18:54

Some of the jobs that I'd been looking at were in the region of £80,000 to £100,000.

0:18:540:18:59

I estimate at least that you would come in at about the middle of the

0:18:590:19:01

lecturer range, which would be a salary of about 60,000 to 70,000 per year.

0:19:010:19:07

It was a massive £50,000 less than Lisa had hoped for,

0:19:070:19:11

which could signal the end of her and James's dream.

0:19:110:19:14

We would want the standard of living that would offer the boys and

0:19:140:19:18

ourselves a much better lifestyle.

0:19:180:19:21

If James's potential earnings weren't high enough,

0:19:210:19:25

it looked like leaving Lauryn might not be an issue after all.

0:19:250:19:29

So, what sort of salary do you think I'd be able to command in Australia?

0:19:300:19:33

Look, I think realistically you'd be looking at anything at about that

0:19:330:19:37

sort of 80,000 mark.

0:19:370:19:39

Which, to be honest with you, is more than what I was on in the UK.

0:19:390:19:42

Lisa and James had had completely different experiences.

0:19:420:19:46

So, how did it affect their vote?

0:19:460:19:48

Did they choose work in Australia or the UK?

0:19:480:19:52

BOTH: Australia!

0:20:020:20:05

Although the salary expectations in lecturing are immediately a lot

0:20:050:20:09

less, it just means that we'll have to have a rethink and maybe look at

0:20:090:20:13

some different opportunities for me in the short term.

0:20:130:20:16

In terms of what it'll give us as a family, moving away from the pub,

0:20:160:20:21

and everything that goes with that,

0:20:210:20:23

I still think we'll be better off out here.

0:20:230:20:26

With Lisa prepared to consider different options,

0:20:340:20:37

the couple's dream was still intact.

0:20:370:20:39

But James needed to establish if the benefits Australia offered his

0:20:390:20:43

family would outweigh the time he'd be spending apart from daughter Lauryn.

0:20:430:20:47

A day sampling Australia's lifestyle could make all the difference.

0:20:470:20:52

The Cornishes spent the day at Latrobe Golf Park in Bundoora.

0:20:530:20:57

Before becoming consumed with running the pub, James was a keen golfer.

0:20:570:21:02

And he hoped that if he and Lisa got more time with Sammy and Louis,

0:21:020:21:05

they could all practice the sport together.

0:21:050:21:08

Yay!

0:21:100:21:12

It was a reminder of what the move was all about.

0:21:120:21:15

We don't spend a huge amount of time together as a family

0:21:150:21:18

and moving to Australia would offer us the opportunity to have that time

0:21:180:21:23

back, and for us to feel like a family again.

0:21:230:21:26

This is fun!

0:21:260:21:28

It was a real taste of what life could be like.

0:21:280:21:31

And James was delighted to get quality time with his boys.

0:21:310:21:34

I can honestly say I've never really seen them that happy,

0:21:340:21:37

as they have been this week.

0:21:370:21:39

They can go and play together,

0:21:390:21:41

and even myself and Lisa are getting involved in that,

0:21:410:21:44

and it's not something we can do at home.

0:21:440:21:47

The family rounded their day off at the driving range.

0:21:470:21:50

And James and Lauryn enjoyed some father-daughter time,

0:21:500:21:53

and the chance to discuss what moving would mean for their relationship.

0:21:530:21:58

So, how would you feel if we came out here?

0:21:580:22:00

Well, I'd be upset, but...

0:22:000:22:03

I'd be happy for you as well.

0:22:030:22:05

You'd be happy to see us for two or three months per year

0:22:050:22:09

rather than every week?

0:22:090:22:11

Oh... I'd get used to it.

0:22:110:22:14

Just like I got used to not seeing you and Mum together.

0:22:140:22:17

And you're not abandoning me.

0:22:170:22:21

-Really? Are you sure?

-I'm saying that because that's how I feel.

0:22:210:22:24

OK.

0:22:260:22:27

It had been a fun and thought-provoking day.

0:22:270:22:30

So when it came to choosing between lifestyle in Australia and the UK,

0:22:300:22:34

what did they opt for?

0:22:340:22:36

ALL: Australia!

0:22:410:22:42

It's just nice to be able to spend time together as a family.

0:22:420:22:46

A unanimous vote for Australia was all well and good,

0:22:530:22:57

but with Lisa's projected salary much lower than expected,

0:22:570:23:00

the family needed to find out whether they could afford to make the move.

0:23:000:23:05

We had provided a breakdown of their living expenses,

0:23:050:23:07

starting with their fortnightly grocery shop.

0:23:070:23:10

Quite a lot of the vegetables and things doubled.

0:23:100:23:14

Beef's a lot cheaper, chicken's a lot cheaper.

0:23:140:23:17

Most things are more expensive, though, aren't they, let's face it,

0:23:170:23:20

as we go down the list. 73% more expensive.

0:23:200:23:24

£135 per month more on food wasn't a deal-breaker,

0:23:240:23:28

but how did the bigger figures stack up?

0:23:280:23:31

James and Lisa based calculations on the second property they viewed.

0:23:310:23:35

Gas is half the price.

0:23:350:23:37

The childcare would be more expensive because we wouldn't have

0:23:370:23:40

grandparents looking after the kids.

0:23:400:23:43

Overall, Lisa and James would spend £600 more per month in Australia.

0:23:430:23:48

The dream would live or die on their potential salaries.

0:23:480:23:52

My salary would be £543 more.

0:23:520:23:57

Yours would be £2 less.

0:23:570:23:59

We would be £70.85 better off per month in Australia.

0:23:590:24:05

If Lisa lectured Down Under,

0:24:050:24:07

the family would be around £70 better off each month.

0:24:070:24:10

Not bad, but not enough to pay for regular flights for Lauryn.

0:24:100:24:15

If I went back into accounting,

0:24:150:24:17

we'd be £10,606.20 per year better off.

0:24:170:24:23

Even if we had the dream house,

0:24:230:24:26

if I was in accounting, and you were too,

0:24:260:24:30

then we'd still be £5,326 better off per year.

0:24:300:24:35

It's a huge difference.

0:24:350:24:37

-I can't believe that.

-It's a huge difference.

0:24:370:24:39

Lisa and James could afford the life they were desperate for,

0:24:390:24:42

and flights for Lauryn.

0:24:420:24:44

So how did they vote?

0:24:440:24:46

Australia!

0:24:500:24:52

-Are you happy?

-Yeah, I'm happy again!

0:24:520:24:55

Financially, Lisa and James's dream seemed achievable.

0:25:020:25:06

But what about the emotional cost?

0:25:060:25:09

While Sammy and Louis were looked after by a childminder,

0:25:090:25:12

the rest of the family were keen to watch messages from loved ones in the UK.

0:25:120:25:16

Hope you're having a fantastic time.

0:25:160:25:19

We don't want you to come back with a tan because we don't want to look

0:25:190:25:22

pasty next to you!

0:25:220:25:23

As a family, Lisa and James are really, you know, hard-working,

0:25:230:25:27

dedicated to their family, to the kids.

0:25:270:25:29

James is a top bloke, and, yeah, if you were to go,

0:25:290:25:32

I'd miss him very much.

0:25:320:25:34

Lisa doesn't just do something, she overdoes it,

0:25:340:25:38

if you know what I mean. She really looks into things.

0:25:380:25:41

She's very sort of like, confident in herself, and the things she does.

0:25:410:25:46

Because I lack in that area, it's nice, because that bit

0:25:460:25:49

rubs off and then I feel confident enough to go and do things.

0:25:490:25:52

So it's nice. I don't think she realises that she does that.

0:25:520:25:56

Lauryn's a lovely young girl.

0:25:560:25:58

She has sprung from being a little girl at the beginning of last summer

0:25:580:26:02

to being quite a young lady, really, hasn't she?

0:26:020:26:05

And she's, yeah, she's a really good big sister to the boys, isn't she?

0:26:050:26:09

Our Sammy, you know what, like, I've said to James and Lisa, you lot go,

0:26:090:26:14

but leave Sammy here with me because I don't want him to go,

0:26:140:26:16

I really don't!

0:26:160:26:18

Louis is lovely. Louis is coming on smashing.

0:26:180:26:21

I can honestly say that

0:26:210:26:24

since I knew...

0:26:240:26:26

..I've been the saddest that I've ever been in my life.

0:26:280:26:31

I'd miss the physical contact,

0:26:350:26:38

and although we'll be able to see them on Skype and talk to her

0:26:380:26:44

and everything like that...

0:26:440:26:46

..I would look forward to the cuddles when I do see them,

0:26:470:26:50

so they'd have to save them all up.

0:26:500:26:53

I know it's going to be hard when they go, if they do go.

0:26:550:26:57

It's a fantastic opportunity, and if you think you can make it work,

0:26:590:27:02

-then do it, because it might be one of the best decisions you've ever made.

-Yeah, definitely.

0:27:020:27:06

We know we've told you we'll miss you,

0:27:060:27:10

but we've also said that we wouldn't stand in your way if you went,

0:27:100:27:13

if you made the decision to go.

0:27:130:27:15

I will really, really miss you.

0:27:150:27:17

Obviously I know it's going to be hard. Especially with Lauryn.

0:27:170:27:21

But I want you to do what's best for you and be happy.

0:27:210:27:25

Just make sure, James and Lisa, that you look at everything...

0:27:250:27:30

..before you make any decisions whatsoever.

0:27:310:27:35

And come back safe.

0:27:350:27:37

I can see now how much it is going to affect

0:27:410:27:45

me and everyone else, but I could see that before.

0:27:450:27:49

It's just... How I will cope with it.

0:27:510:27:54

Lauryn had given her blessing for the family's move to Australia,

0:28:010:28:04

but James still needed to decide if the lifestyle he and Lisa yearned

0:28:040:28:08

for with their sons was worth the time he'd lose with his daughter.

0:28:080:28:12

Had Australia lived up to the dream?

0:28:120:28:15

It's been fascinating to see the Australian culture and look round

0:28:160:28:22

some fantastic houses.

0:28:220:28:24

Experience what Australia has got to offer for us.

0:28:240:28:27

There's parts of the week that have been really good,

0:28:270:28:30

parts of the week that have put my mind into doubt as to whether a move

0:28:300:28:34

to Australia is right for us.

0:28:340:28:36

James was still wrestling with the positive and negative implications

0:28:360:28:40

-of a move, too.

-This thing for me with the decision is Lauryn.

0:28:400:28:45

She's my daughter, she's my first-born,

0:28:460:28:49

and she means everything to me.

0:28:490:28:51

Obviously I'd be sad if they did choose Australia,

0:28:510:28:54

but I'd much rather them be happy than to have to

0:28:540:28:59

stop and...

0:28:590:29:01

crush their dreams.

0:29:010:29:04

It was time for the whole family to decide where their future lay.

0:29:040:29:09

ALL: Australia!

0:29:190:29:21

-Has everyone put Australia?

-Yeah!

0:29:230:29:25

-Cool.

-Wow!

0:29:250:29:28

The writing's on the wall for us to come out here.

0:29:280:29:31

I voted Australia for you and for coming out here twice a year,

0:29:310:29:36

maybe when I turn 18 I could come out and have a year out.

0:29:360:29:39

-Did you vote UK or did you vote Australia?

-Australia.

0:29:390:29:42

-Australia! Shout it out.

-Australia!

0:29:420:29:45

With Lauryn happy to spend months at a time in Australia,

0:29:560:30:00

James had decided a move Down Under could give the rest of his family

0:30:000:30:04

the time together they were missing in the UK.

0:30:040:30:07

So, two years on,

0:30:070:30:10

it's time to find out where the Cornishes are now calling home.

0:30:100:30:14

It's April 2016, and the family are living in Point Cook, Australia.

0:30:140:30:22

James, Lisa and the boys moved into their modern four-bedroom house in

0:30:220:30:25

this western suburb 60 miles from Melbourne days after arriving back

0:30:250:30:30

in the country a year ago.

0:30:300:30:32

We landed on the Wednesday evening.

0:30:320:30:34

We went viewing rental properties on the Saturday,

0:30:340:30:37

which is the kind of common day for open houses in Australia,

0:30:370:30:41

and we got a phone call first thing on the Monday morning to say that

0:30:410:30:44

we'd been accepted for a rental property,

0:30:440:30:47

and we could come and collect the keys that afternoon.

0:30:470:30:50

So it was less than a week between landing and moving into our house

0:30:500:30:55

that we're in now.

0:30:550:30:56

The area's where the family viewed their dream home during the trial

0:31:000:31:04

week, and they couldn't be happier in their new surroundings.

0:31:040:31:07

And this is our kitchen area.

0:31:070:31:10

James does most of the cooking.

0:31:100:31:11

I can bake, but he does most of the evening meals for the family here,

0:31:110:31:16

and the cooker's great, because we can fit two lots of

0:31:160:31:19

Yorkshire puddings in there, if we want to.

0:31:190:31:21

The house that we've got now, you know,

0:31:210:31:23

we couldn't really ask for much more. It's huge.

0:31:230:31:27

All the kids have got their own bedrooms,

0:31:270:31:28

Lauryn's got her own room when she comes and visits,

0:31:280:31:31

and we've got a huge master bedroom with ensuite.

0:31:310:31:34

So one of the really great things about this space is something that

0:31:380:31:41

we never ever heard in the UK, and that's our walk-in wardrobe.

0:31:410:31:46

And James gets 50% of this, which I think's really unfair.

0:31:460:31:49

I think we take for granted a lot of the time what we've got now,

0:31:490:31:53

but looking back to what we had in the UK,

0:31:530:31:55

and particularly what we had when we were living over the pub,

0:31:550:31:58

it's a million miles away from what we were used to back them.

0:31:580:32:01

This is my bedroom, and it's got lots of toys in it.

0:32:010:32:05

We love the lifestyle here.

0:32:090:32:12

It's just set up for living.

0:32:120:32:13

We've got a golf course on the doorstep, tennis courts,

0:32:130:32:16

golf driving range. We've got a swimming pool, we've got a gym,

0:32:160:32:20

all within two minutes' drive of the house or ten minutes' walk.

0:32:200:32:23

We are right next to the coast, so if we want to go to the beach,

0:32:230:32:26

we've got that on the doorstep, as well.

0:32:260:32:28

The lifestyle they had glimpsed during the trial week has become

0:32:280:32:31

their reality, and, looking back,

0:32:310:32:34

James and Lisa were never in any doubt that it would.

0:32:340:32:37

We'd fallen in love with Melbourne, we'd fallen in love with Australia,

0:32:370:32:40

and if someone had told me at that point in time, you stay here,

0:32:400:32:43

we'll pack up your bags in England, I'd have done it in a heartbeat.

0:32:430:32:47

We both actually said to each other that it felt like we were leaving

0:32:480:32:51

home when we got on the plane to go back to the UK.

0:32:510:32:54

We started the visa application process pretty much as soon as we

0:32:540:32:57

got off the plane back in the UK.

0:32:570:32:59

There was a lot of work to be done,

0:32:590:33:01

in terms of wrapping up the business and applying for jobs,

0:33:010:33:03

and planning the move out here.

0:33:030:33:05

They also had to tell loved ones they were going.

0:33:070:33:10

They knew deep down this was going to happen.

0:33:100:33:13

It wasn't an easy task to break the news to family and friends,

0:33:130:33:17

by any means,

0:33:170:33:19

but most of them understood the reasons why.

0:33:190:33:22

Their visa was through just six months later.

0:33:220:33:25

And before leaving the UK,

0:33:250:33:27

Lisa had been fortunate enough to secure an accountancy job at Melbourne University.

0:33:270:33:32

And I did all of my interviews over video, over the internet, for that.

0:33:320:33:36

It was a very strange process for me,

0:33:360:33:39

sitting in the kitchen at 9.30pm at night with my tablet stacked up on

0:33:390:33:42

cookery books so that it was at the right height.

0:33:420:33:44

But I was fortunate enough to eventually get the job.

0:33:440:33:48

The family left the UK in April 2015,

0:33:480:33:51

after a bit of a do to mark their departure.

0:33:510:33:55

We had in Australia themed party.

0:33:550:33:58

One of our closest friends made a huge Australia flag cake.

0:33:580:34:02

We had shapes from Arnott's,

0:34:020:34:05

and all sorts of Tim Tams and things like that.

0:34:050:34:08

It was great fun.

0:34:080:34:10

But not everything was as enjoyable.

0:34:100:34:14

James still had to face the reality of putting 10,000 miles between him

0:34:140:34:19

and his daughter, Lauryn.

0:34:190:34:21

The last goodbye to Lauryn on the morning that we came away was really

0:34:210:34:24

difficult. We were both in tears, you know,

0:34:240:34:28

it was up until half an hour before we were laughing and joking,

0:34:280:34:31

and then it all of a sudden became real.

0:34:310:34:33

You know, when we said goodbye, and sort of waved her off,

0:34:330:34:35

as we drove off down the road. It was really, really difficult,

0:34:350:34:38

and probably the first couple of days after that, it was really raw.

0:34:380:34:42

Good boy, well done.

0:34:460:34:48

It was a difficult time for everyone.

0:34:480:34:50

However, once back in Australia,

0:34:500:34:53

the family threw themselves into setting up their new life.

0:34:530:34:56

Our first week here was really fast-paced.

0:34:590:35:03

Obviously, I started work really quickly,

0:35:030:35:06

and during that time period we also needed to get the boys registered

0:35:060:35:10

into childcare, and into school, get Medicare cards,

0:35:100:35:14

get driving licences sorted.

0:35:140:35:15

It felt like we were doing something, if not 20 things, every single day.

0:35:150:35:19

It was a real whirlwind.

0:35:190:35:22

Well done. He's doing well, isn't he?

0:35:220:35:24

We literally had nothing when we came here.

0:35:240:35:26

We had 24 boxes on a ship somewhere,

0:35:260:35:29

with kids toys and clothes and things,

0:35:290:35:31

but that was everything that we'd brought.

0:35:310:35:33

So we had to set up a new house, and a new home and a new life.

0:35:330:35:36

Fortunately, it didn't take Lisa long to settle into her new job as a

0:35:360:35:40

business intelligence manager.

0:35:400:35:43

I love my work. I really enjoy working for the university.

0:35:470:35:51

Work was a concern to me during the trial week,

0:35:520:35:55

because I loved the job that I did in the UK.

0:35:550:35:57

In retrospect, I could never have imagined how brilliant

0:35:570:36:02

the job that I've got here would be.

0:36:020:36:05

James spent the first few months getting Sammy and Louis settled

0:36:080:36:11

Down Under, and now they're delighted with their new homeland.

0:36:110:36:15

Perfect. Go on, knock daddy's out the way, Louis.

0:36:150:36:18

I like Australia because it's got nice, hot places and kangaroos are really funny.

0:36:200:36:25

The boys are really well settled. Sammy's in school.

0:36:290:36:32

He's doing great in school,

0:36:320:36:34

and Louis goes to kinder, and also day-care.

0:36:340:36:38

He's in a fantastic place as well, he absolutely loves it,

0:36:380:36:40

and they're both learning languages, so Sammy's learning Japanese,

0:36:400:36:44

and Louis is learning a little bit of Chinese at the moment.

0:36:440:36:47

And Sammy's learning guitar at school, as well,

0:36:470:36:50

and we're getting them more and more involved in sports.

0:36:500:36:54

The whole family have made lots of new friends.

0:37:000:37:04

Early on when we first got here,

0:37:040:37:06

there were a lot of informal arranged meet ups at parks,

0:37:060:37:09

where families were openly invited to turn up with the sole purpose of

0:37:090:37:15

meeting new people.

0:37:150:37:16

And we got a lot of friends out of that initially.

0:37:160:37:20

And some of who we are really, really close with now, and who we'd

0:37:200:37:26

state are our closest friends.

0:37:260:37:29

Two months after they'd arrived,

0:37:290:37:31

Lauryn made her first trip out to visit them.

0:37:310:37:33

I was really excited to see her.

0:37:330:37:35

She walked through the doors, and obviously we ran up and gave each

0:37:350:37:37

other a big hug, and she was here for around seven weeks,

0:37:370:37:41

and in that time I wasn't working.

0:37:410:37:43

It was fantastic to be able to spend quality time with her.

0:37:430:37:48

Sammy was delighted to have his sister back, too.

0:37:480:37:51

I miss Lauryn because she's really nice and helpful.

0:37:510:37:55

James and Lisa made sure Lauryn's first visit was as memorable as possible.

0:37:550:38:00

We were conscious that she was leaving the UK summer behind and

0:38:000:38:04

coming out to the Australian winter, so we decided to take a drive,

0:38:040:38:08

and jumped in the car and drove up to the Gold Coast,

0:38:080:38:11

which was a long trek.

0:38:110:38:13

We had a week up there in the sunshine.

0:38:130:38:16

-Hello!

-Thanks to technology,

0:38:230:38:25

the family regularly stay in touch with loved ones back home, too.

0:38:250:38:29

Oh, we saw that on the forecast this morning. It was going to snow.

0:38:290:38:33

It said eight degrees...

0:38:330:38:35

Lisa's mum and dad have already been out to visit, and plan to return for Christmas.

0:38:350:38:39

We've got a lot of visitors this year.

0:38:390:38:41

Lauryn will be out here three times this year, in total,

0:38:410:38:44

so we're going to see a lot of her, as well, which is great.

0:38:440:38:48

So it's going to be a busy house. So I'm grateful for the extra space.

0:38:480:38:52

My dad and stepmum have been out already, and they had a great time.

0:38:520:38:56

My mum and stepdad are planning to come out in June this year.

0:38:560:39:00

We've always got somebody coming through the door and visiting us

0:39:000:39:03

so it's good fun.

0:39:030:39:05

Meanwhile, James has just started his first permanent job in Australia,

0:39:050:39:09

working as a finance manager, also at Melbourne University.

0:39:090:39:13

-PHONE RINGS

-Hello, James speaking.

0:39:130:39:15

It's the perfect job for me. It's exactly what I was used to in the UK,

0:39:150:39:19

in terms of business partnering and budget management,

0:39:190:39:22

and I think there's a lot of scope to build the role.

0:39:220:39:26

So, yeah, I can see myself being here for a long time.

0:39:260:39:29

It has another added bonus in the fact that I actually work with Lisa

0:39:290:39:33

in the same office. Our roles are interconnected,

0:39:330:39:36

so we work very closely together.

0:39:360:39:39

Mixing business with pleasure doesn't seem to be a problem for the Cornishes.

0:39:390:39:44

It's something we've done before,

0:39:440:39:47

but we're still kind of learning what it means for us here.

0:39:470:39:51

But the best bit is they've finally

0:39:510:39:54

managed to address their work/life balance.

0:39:540:39:57

My boss gives me an amount of flexibility with my start times and

0:39:570:40:01

finish times, which allows me to manage the childcare,

0:40:010:40:05

and for James and I to alternate drop-offs and pick-ups,

0:40:050:40:09

so that we both get to spend time with the kids on a morning and an

0:40:090:40:12

afternoon, and it's a far better lifestyle than we had in the UK.

0:40:120:40:17

The couple have also recently celebrated another milestone Down Under.

0:40:210:40:26

When James and I first got married,

0:40:260:40:28

we made a commitment to renew our wedding vows every five years.

0:40:280:40:32

We spoke with one of the local pubs,

0:40:320:40:34

and arranged to have our vows renewed by one of our friends unofficially,

0:40:340:40:39

and had a Neighbours-themed wedding,

0:40:390:40:42

where Lisa and I got dressed up as Scott and Charlene,

0:40:420:40:45

and we had all the guests came as various characters from Neighbours.

0:40:450:40:49

It was a lot of fun, and it

0:40:490:40:51

allowed James and I to renew our wedding vows,

0:40:510:40:54

and also mark the fact that this was our first year here in Australia.

0:40:540:40:58

-On your marks...

-Set... Go!

0:41:000:41:03

It's been a hectic 12 months,

0:41:030:41:05

but all in all it sounds like moving Down Under has been everything Lisa

0:41:050:41:09

and James hoped it would be.

0:41:090:41:11

The best thing about life in Australia for us is the family time that we

0:41:110:41:15

get together, and the weather, and what that enables us to do.

0:41:150:41:18

It's quite a nice night tonight.

0:41:180:41:20

It's lovely. We wouldn't be doing this back in the UK.

0:41:200:41:23

-No.

-There's no chance of that.

0:41:230:41:24

Weekends now are spent going out to zoos and to beaches and parks,

0:41:240:41:28

and to people's houses for barbecues and things like that.

0:41:280:41:32

It might sound stereotypical, but this is genuinely what we do.

0:41:320:41:37

And having recently purchased some land,

0:41:370:41:40

they already have plans to build their own home.

0:41:400:41:43

The house that we're building will be our dream house,

0:41:430:41:46

so we've built it with a cinema room in there, we've got

0:41:460:41:50

a huge master bedroom for us, we've got...

0:41:500:41:53

All the kids have got their own rooms with walk-in wardrobes,

0:41:530:41:56

huge play area for the kids.

0:41:560:41:58

And we've also

0:41:580:42:00

made provisions for building a swimming pool in the back garden,

0:42:000:42:03

so the kids can enjoy that, as and when they want to.

0:42:030:42:07

Having come 10,000 miles for the life they wanted,

0:42:070:42:11

it looks like the Cornishes will be staying put.

0:42:110:42:14

I would definitely say that our family's future lies in Australia.

0:42:140:42:17

It just feels like home, and it has since we first got here.

0:42:170:42:22

THEY LAUGH AND SHOUT

0:42:260:42:28

The only thing that could make it better now would be if Lauryn was

0:42:310:42:34

here on a permanent basis,

0:42:340:42:36

but we both appreciate that that's not a possibility at the moment.

0:42:360:42:40

But, yeah, I think all in all everything on balance,

0:42:400:42:44

we're pretty much living the dream.

0:42:440:42:46

How about a seagull?

0:42:460:42:49

It's been an eventful few years for the Cornishes,

0:42:530:42:57

and while leaving Lauryn in the UK hasn't been easy for anyone,

0:42:570:43:00

it seems the move really has given Lisa and James more quality time

0:43:000:43:05

with Sammy and Louis.

0:43:050:43:07

We wish the whole family a very happy future together in the country

0:43:070:43:11

they have so quickly made themselves home in.
