Choosing to emigrate halfway around the world

0:00:050:00:08

can risk splitting your family in two,

0:00:080:00:10

and in 2011, the Coe family were faced with exactly that prospect,

0:00:100:00:15

as they decided whether to make the life-changing move to New Zealand.

0:00:150:00:19

One year on, we're catching up with them to find out what happened next.

0:00:190:00:23

The Coes' first attempt to move to New Zealand

0:00:230:00:27

almost ended in disaster.

0:00:270:00:29

It nearly broke our marriage.

0:00:290:00:31

We didn't speak for about six months.

0:00:310:00:33

And would another re-open old wounds?

0:00:330:00:37

You're not thinking straight.

0:00:370:00:40

-I am.

-No, you're not.

0:00:400:00:41

With so much at stake,

0:00:410:00:43

have they been able to go through with it this time?

0:00:430:00:46

If times are hard, it's a strain on any relationship,

0:00:460:00:50

you know, so we'll just have to see.

0:00:500:00:52

Let's hope times will be better for us.

0:00:520:00:54

In 2011, the Coe family faced

0:01:170:01:20

one of the biggest decisions of their lives.

0:01:200:01:23

After a week experiencing life in New Zealand, they had to choose

0:01:230:01:27

whether to stay in the UK or to make the move for good.

0:01:270:01:30

Today, we're revisiting them

0:01:300:01:32

to find out what's happened since we last met.

0:01:320:01:35

After 12,000 miles and a gruelling 24 hours in the air,

0:01:370:01:41

the Coes touch down in Wellington, tired but excited.

0:01:410:01:45

I hope this week we might be able to, you know,

0:01:460:01:49

sort of really be proactive and really give it a go.

0:01:490:01:53

I'm looking optimistic for a job, and hopefully I'll find something

0:01:550:01:58

and hopefully I'll stay.

0:01:580:02:00

'I feel really ready to go.'

0:02:020:02:04

In 2011, the Coe family lived in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex.

0:02:060:02:11

Sharon and Justin, then aged 46,

0:02:110:02:15

were parents to 21-year-old Samantha,

0:02:150:02:17

18-year-old Ashley

0:02:170:02:19

and Jeremy, who was 14.

0:02:190:02:21

Justin had his own carpentry business

0:02:210:02:24

and Sharon had recently qualified as an accounting technician.

0:02:240:02:27

For years, Justin dreamt of moving his family

0:02:270:02:31

for a better life in New Zealand.

0:02:310:02:33

After some initial reluctance,

0:02:330:02:35

Sharon was soon caught up with the romance of the idea.

0:02:350:02:38

My initial thoughts about moving to New Zealand

0:02:380:02:41

were I was a bit upset about leaving my mum,

0:02:410:02:43

but then it became a bit of an adventure

0:02:430:02:46

and I've got into this adventure

0:02:460:02:48

and I just want to be in New Zealand.

0:02:480:02:50

In 2009, with their bags packed and visas stamped,

0:02:500:02:54

the Coes were all set for a new life in New Zealand

0:02:540:02:58

until Justin dropped a bombshell.

0:02:580:03:00

One morning, I woke up in bed

0:03:000:03:02

and Justin came and sat on the edge of the bed

0:03:020:03:05

and said "I don't want to move to New Zealand."

0:03:050:03:07

That's literally his first words of how he broke it to me

0:03:070:03:10

that he didn't want to go to New Zealand.

0:03:100:03:12

He just sat on the edge of the bed and said, "I don't want to go."

0:03:120:03:15

I was told that there were no employment prospects for me

0:03:150:03:19

because they were only going to employ locals and so on.

0:03:190:03:23

I sort of got cold feet right at the last minute.

0:03:230:03:26

Well, the week before we flew.

0:03:260:03:28

So I cancelled the tickets and decided to stay in the UK.

0:03:280:03:32

It nearly broke our marriage.

0:03:320:03:34

We didn't speak for about six months.

0:03:340:03:37

After the recession,

0:03:370:03:38

the situation in the UK had been made even worse.

0:03:380:03:41

'Work's been hit and miss.'

0:03:410:03:43

The phone hardly ever rings.

0:03:430:03:45

You know, I can probably count on one hand

0:03:450:03:48

how many times I stay at home as opposed to go to work.

0:03:480:03:52

It's been really, really hard.

0:03:520:03:54

I lost my job last year and we've just literally had no income.

0:03:540:03:58

Coming from a very vibrant family with enough money to cover you,

0:03:580:04:02

we've gone down to having virtually nothing.

0:04:020:04:05

We're living hand to mouth.

0:04:050:04:07

Money comes in and by the end of the month, the bank account's empty.

0:04:070:04:11

With their age against them and only a year left on their visa,

0:04:110:04:15

it was Sharon's final hope of convincing him

0:04:150:04:18

their future together lay down under.

0:04:180:04:20

I still feel a bit let down.

0:04:220:04:24

I'm still wondering whether or not

0:04:240:04:26

he's actually going to come out and stay with me.

0:04:260:04:28

But it wasn't only Justin who was in two minds about emigrating.

0:04:280:04:33

Daughter Samantha was at university

0:04:330:04:35

and wasn't sure if moving was right for her.

0:04:350:04:38

I'm 21, I've got a lot of things here,

0:04:380:04:41

and also education is really important at the moment for me.

0:04:410:04:44

I might not like the universities out there.

0:04:440:04:47

And, erm... it's just quite difficult.

0:04:470:04:50

Sharon and Justin hoped New Zealand would give their sons

0:04:500:04:54

a better quality of life,

0:04:540:04:56

especially Ashley, who suffered from autism.

0:04:560:04:59

I'd like the boys to have more sports in their lives

0:04:590:05:02

because here they don't do many sports, they just sit at home on their computers.

0:05:020:05:05

Whereas in New Zealand, they seem to like the snowboarding.

0:05:050:05:09

I'm hoping to get them into other sports as well,

0:05:090:05:11

which will get them off their backsides and doing something.

0:05:110:05:16

They faced a massive decision.

0:05:160:05:19

One that could have also decided the future of their marriage.

0:05:190:05:23

In my mind, yes, I'm going and I'm staying.

0:05:230:05:26

My two boys will stay with me.

0:05:260:05:27

For me, it's now or never.

0:05:270:05:30

It's just that choice in life, you know.

0:05:300:05:33

So, it is the last chance.

0:05:330:05:36

The Coes visited Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand,

0:05:410:05:45

a popular, but expensive, destination for Brits.

0:05:450:05:48

Were the family going to be in for a shock?

0:05:480:05:52

They stayed in a modern apartment in the heart of the city,

0:05:520:05:56

but what was Justin's reaction?

0:05:560:05:58

This looks a little bit different, doesn't it?

0:05:580:06:01

Different to what we've got back at home, isn't it?

0:06:010:06:04

Oh, this is nice. I like that.

0:06:080:06:11

Sharon, make some tea. I'll be watching TV.

0:06:110:06:14

-No, you make the tea!

-Can we work out how to put heating on?

0:06:140:06:17

I thought I'd come to a semi-tropical island.

0:06:170:06:19

It's really cold here, isn't it?

0:06:190:06:22

And it wasn't just the apartment that left him cold.

0:06:220:06:26

I would say, from what I've seen,

0:06:260:06:28

it's not quite what it is on the postcards or the internet.

0:06:280:06:32

It does look a little bit run-down to me.

0:06:320:06:35

For a capital city, I'm very surprised at that.

0:06:350:06:38

And Justin's worries had Sharon concerned.

0:06:380:06:42

It's playing on my mind quite a lot that he might not want to stay here.

0:06:420:06:45

And I really want to stay here.

0:06:450:06:48

In the UK, the Coe family had a four-bedroom detached house

0:06:540:06:57

in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex.

0:06:570:07:00

It was on the market for £185,000.

0:07:000:07:03

They had strong ideas of what they wanted from their ideal home.

0:07:030:07:09

I guess my dream house would be a property that looks over a lake

0:07:090:07:14

or over the sea, because I've always lived near the water

0:07:140:07:17

and I think a changing view is fantastic.

0:07:170:07:20

The ideal house I'd like is I wouldn't want one

0:07:200:07:22

that's right in the town centre.

0:07:220:07:24

I'd like something slightly out in the suburbs.

0:07:240:07:27

It's got to have enough bedrooms,

0:07:270:07:29

because my boys like their own rooms.

0:07:290:07:31

Just one with a bit more space.

0:07:310:07:33

We arranged for the Coes to get a taste

0:07:350:07:37

of Wellington's housing market. We showed them three options

0:07:370:07:40

based upon what they wanted, what they could afford

0:07:400:07:44

and the real price of property down under.

0:07:440:07:47

Only after checking out each home would the family discover its price.

0:07:470:07:52

First stop was at a four-bedroom house

0:07:520:07:55

in the popular Paraparaumu area, 45 minutes

0:07:550:07:58

from the centre of Wellington.

0:07:580:08:01

The house could offer them plenty of space, if they could get inside.

0:08:010:08:05

This must be the way in. Can't be, can it?

0:08:060:08:12

Yep, that's the way in.

0:08:120:08:15

Well if it is, it's a climb round, isn't it?

0:08:150:08:17

Justin was struggling to see the potential in the house.

0:08:190:08:22

At first I thought this was a do-up,

0:08:230:08:26

but people were actually living in it.

0:08:260:08:28

It's quite surprising, because I wouldn't live like this. Would you?

0:08:280:08:33

No.

0:08:330:08:34

However, upstairs there was a big plus for Sharon.

0:08:340:08:38

-You can see real fantastic views.

-Yeah.

0:08:380:08:42

It reminds me so much of Clacton.

0:08:420:08:44

-No, it doesn't.

-No, that's true. It doesn't.

0:08:440:08:46

And there was a dream feature for Justin too. Well, sort of.

0:08:460:08:51

I've always wanted to put that into a house.

0:08:510:08:53

-A laundry chute?

-Yeah.

0:08:530:08:55

-That saves a lot of time.

-Doesn't it?

0:08:550:08:57

-That's brilliant.

-Straight into the washing machine.

0:08:570:09:00

The house is sold. Just with that, it's fantastic.

0:09:000:09:03

Despite all the space inside, the views and the laundry chute,

0:09:030:09:08

had the house convinced anyone?

0:09:080:09:10

-Could you see yourself living here?

-No.

0:09:100:09:12

Well, that was that sorted.

0:09:120:09:15

The house hadn't won them over,

0:09:150:09:17

but what about its cost? With New Zealand property prices

0:09:170:09:20

rising so much in recent years,

0:09:200:09:22

could they even afford it?

0:09:220:09:25

£194,000

0:09:290:09:31

or 380,000

0:09:310:09:34

-is sort of almost at the top of the budget.

-Yeah.

0:09:340:09:37

I would definitely want a garden

0:09:370:09:40

if I was paying that kind of money.

0:09:400:09:42

It makes me think that although this is a much larger house,

0:09:420:09:46

my little house is nicer

0:09:460:09:49

because it's all done up and how we want it.

0:09:490:09:52

-And you can get through the front door.

-Yeah.

0:09:520:09:55

It was a setback for Sharon.

0:09:550:09:57

Convincing Justin to leave Essex

0:09:570:10:00

would be even tougher if this was all they could afford.

0:10:000:10:03

Perhaps the second property would fare better?

0:10:030:10:06

It was a four-bedroom house in the Paremata area,

0:10:060:10:09

close to the centre of Wellington, which was good for work.

0:10:090:10:12

Hopefully it had a better build quality for Justin...

0:10:120:10:15

-It's nice.

-Looks like it's made of plywood, though.

0:10:150:10:18

..or not.

0:10:180:10:20

Inside though, it was a very different story.

0:10:200:10:24

-This is much cosier.

-Wow, lovely.

0:10:240:10:28

This is beautiful. Not in our price range though, is it?

0:10:300:10:33

Better go and find some more money then.

0:10:330:10:35

Yeah. Got to work harder, haven't I?

0:10:350:10:37

It's got a more cosy feeling to it.

0:10:370:10:40

That's the log fire, mate.

0:10:400:10:43

This really is a dream home.

0:10:460:10:48

This house was an instant hit

0:10:490:10:51

and it was certainly bigger than they were used to.

0:10:510:10:54

-Wow.

-Look at the size of this room. Unbelievable, isn't it?

0:10:560:11:00

-That's as big as Jeremy's bedroom!

-Exactly.

0:11:000:11:03

Even the views were bigger.

0:11:060:11:08

-Oh, look at this.

-Wow.

0:11:080:11:11

You'd have to take up yodelling for a living.

0:11:110:11:15

Look at that. It's snowing like in the Swiss Alps.

0:11:150:11:17

I don't want it to stay, though. I'd like warm weather.

0:11:170:11:22

Despite the chill, this house had left both Justin and Sharon

0:11:220:11:25

with a warm glow.

0:11:250:11:27

And the children seem to have had a change of heart too.

0:11:270:11:31

I think it's quite nice. I just love how it looks

0:11:310:11:34

and the feeling you get from it.

0:11:340:11:36

-We love it.

-It's amazing!

0:11:360:11:39

The house looked like a genuine dream for the Coes.

0:11:420:11:45

But was it within their £200,000 budget?

0:11:450:11:49

-How much is it?

-A million quid?

-No, it's not!

0:11:520:11:55

No. £330,000.

0:11:550:11:58

That's still out of your price range.

0:11:580:12:00

I just think it is within our grasp if we both work hard.

0:12:000:12:04

We do work hard and I think we can still achieve this.

0:12:040:12:07

You're not thinking straight, you know.

0:12:070:12:10

-I am.

-No, you're not.

0:12:100:12:12

I'm sorry, you're just looking at it with, you know...

0:12:120:12:15

Because this is what you want.

0:12:150:12:17

Yeah.

0:12:170:12:19

Yeah, but it's not going to happen.

0:12:190:12:21

Ouch! It wasn't just the weather that had turned frosty.

0:12:210:12:25

It was definitely time to move on to the next property.

0:12:250:12:28

The third house was in the coastal village of Raumati South.

0:12:280:12:33

The big, open plan living area

0:12:330:12:35

would have given them plenty of space inside.

0:12:350:12:37

It had views that Sharon loved, but it did need some TLC.

0:12:370:12:42

This has got a nice view, from this room.

0:12:470:12:49

It's not a bad sized room.

0:12:490:12:51

This property is a little bit closer to the city,

0:12:510:12:54

-which is a good thing.

-Yeah.

-Again, it needs work.

0:12:540:12:57

That's the thing.

0:12:570:13:00

It's not a bad property. I think the gardens are nice.

0:13:000:13:04

It's got a lot of ground. Whereas, the others haven't had quite as much ground.

0:13:040:13:08

Again, the glass was half full for Sharon

0:13:080:13:11

but did the price of this house come as a surprise?

0:13:110:13:14

£235,000...

0:13:190:13:21

-You would have to spend a good £50,000...

-To bring it up, yeah.

0:13:210:13:25

To bring it up to standard.

0:13:250:13:27

That meant, in total, the house could end up

0:13:270:13:30

£100,000 over their budget.

0:13:300:13:34

It had been a tough day viewing all three properties,

0:13:340:13:37

with none of them really making the grade. So how did they vote?

0:13:370:13:40

Based on the properties that we've looked at today, our vote goes to...

0:13:420:13:45

-England.

-New Zealand!

0:13:480:13:50

-What did you do that for?

-There was one nice house

0:13:530:13:55

but you've got to look at all the others that we looked at.

0:13:550:13:58

I think the New Zealand properties are better.

0:13:580:14:01

So, you all went... Well, Jeremy might be on my side.

0:14:010:14:04

He's sick and tired of living in a cupboard!

0:14:040:14:06

If Justin really couldn't see himself in a New Zealand house,

0:14:060:14:10

would it spell the end for Sharon's dream?

0:14:100:14:14

Back home Justin ran his own carpentry business

0:14:180:14:21

but in New Zealand he would have to be employed for two years

0:14:210:14:24

before he could set up on his own.

0:14:240:14:26

A lack of job prospects put an end to the last move,

0:14:260:14:29

and he still had big worries.

0:14:290:14:31

Originally when we looked to emigrating to New Zealand

0:14:310:14:33

there were good business opportunities for me out there

0:14:330:14:36

and a good lifestyle for the family.

0:14:360:14:39

Since the recession, that's hit the construction industry very hard

0:14:390:14:43

so it means those opportunities no longer exist for me, or I don't believe that they do.

0:14:430:14:48

Sharon had lost her job

0:14:500:14:51

as an accounting technician during the recession,

0:14:510:14:54

which left the Coes struggling to make ends meet.

0:14:540:14:57

She was hoping for better luck in New Zealand.

0:14:570:15:00

By the looks of it, prospects are a lot better for me out there, than they are here.

0:15:000:15:05

On this trip I am looking for a job.

0:15:050:15:07

If I find one, then I'll stay.

0:15:070:15:09

We arranged for Justin to spend the day with a local building company.

0:15:100:15:14

Paul Winstanley emigrated from the UK

0:15:140:15:17

and had a thriving renovation business.

0:15:170:15:20

He was quick to address Justin's concerns.

0:15:200:15:24

Would you say there's a plentiful supply of skilled tradesmen to call on here?

0:15:240:15:27

No, I think there's a huge shortage of skills in New Zealand

0:15:270:15:31

and we've got a massive housing shortage looming.

0:15:310:15:34

Going forward, there's going to be massive demand for qualified people.

0:15:340:15:40

That was ideal news, but only if Justin could handle being an employee rather than the boss.

0:15:400:15:47

Across town, Sharon was heading to check on her job prospects.

0:15:480:15:53

Having put family ahead of her career, working down under

0:15:530:15:55

meant a lot more than earning a decent salary.

0:15:550:15:58

I've brought up the kids and done all that sort of thing for now.

0:15:580:16:02

Now I want a career of my own. It isn't just about the money, no,

0:16:020:16:06

it's more to do with that I want something that I can find,

0:16:060:16:09

that I enjoy and can get my teeth into and progress to a higher level.

0:16:090:16:13

She met with recruitment agent, Sharlene Yule,

0:16:130:16:16

but would there be good news?

0:16:160:16:18

Actually, the market's very buoyant.

0:16:180:16:20

There's a lot of work on.

0:16:200:16:22

I see you've got your accounting technician qualification.

0:16:220:16:25

That's recognised here in New Zealand. What you've got, in terms of your skills and experience,

0:16:250:16:30

you can hit the ground running, in terms of work.

0:16:300:16:33

That was promising, so what about the pay?

0:16:330:16:37

The range here in Wellington can be anything between 55,000 and 65,000.

0:16:370:16:42

Which is about 27 to £32,000, which is a lot more than I expected.

0:16:420:16:47

Well, you've got good skills and good experience,

0:16:470:16:50

-you want to be recognised for those.

-Thank you.

0:16:500:16:53

Good accounts people are really difficult to find.

0:16:530:16:56

It looked like Sharon's dreams were all coming true.

0:16:560:16:59

There was plenty of work and she could earn more than her and Justin's combined UK salaries.

0:16:590:17:04

That was brilliant because I think I could get myself a job in New Zealand.

0:17:040:17:08

I think I'm staying.

0:17:090:17:11

It looked as if Sharon wouldn't take "no" for an answer now,

0:17:110:17:14

but a cautious Justin still needed some reassuring.

0:17:140:17:17

He had some big questions.

0:17:170:17:20

What sort of money would a tradesman get out here?

0:17:200:17:24

Depending on age and experience, we would offer between 18 and 25.

0:17:240:17:30

-That's an hour.

-That's between ten and £12.50 an hour.

0:17:300:17:35

Yes, it's about that.

0:17:350:17:37

-Are you advertising for anyone at the moment?

-Yes, we are.

0:17:380:17:42

We've got a huge volume of work to do. We're booked up till March at the moment.

0:17:420:17:48

-Work booked right into next year?

-Yeah, it is.

0:17:480:17:51

There's no shortage of work coming in at the moment.

0:17:530:17:56

That was more good news,

0:17:560:17:58

but would the promise of work and a bigger salary

0:17:580:18:01

compensate Justin for leaving behind everything he'd built up at home?

0:18:010:18:06

Do I carry on in my own business or do I come out here and start working for somebody?

0:18:060:18:10

That's something I'd find difficult to adjust to.

0:18:100:18:14

So which way did he vote?

0:18:140:18:17

UK.

0:18:180:18:20

No prizes for guessing which way Sharon voted.

0:18:200:18:24

New Zealand!

0:18:270:18:28

It had been quite a day,

0:18:280:18:30

and it looked like there was plenty to talk about back at the apartment.

0:18:300:18:34

-Well, how did you get on?

-Really good.

-Yeah?

-Yeah.

0:18:350:18:39

We're staying here.

0:18:390:18:41

-Oh, that's not so good, then, is it?

-Yes, it's brilliant!

0:18:410:18:45

-I reckon I'll get a job, easy.

-That's quite promising, isn't it?

0:18:450:18:50

-Knowing I can get work, we've got to move here.

-We'll have to discuss that...

0:18:500:18:56

It's going to be hard for me to wrench myself away from the UK.

0:18:580:19:02

But it's not all about me, is it? It's about the family as well.

0:19:040:19:08

-No, that's it.

-Yeah.

0:19:080:19:10

We'll see how we go, then.

0:19:110:19:13

But if the weather's like this, I'm not moving out here!

0:19:130:19:16

Even though there was work for both of them in New Zealand,

0:19:160:19:19

Sharon and Justin didn't seem any closer to a decision on their future.

0:19:190:19:23

Sometimes you're being forced into a corner, that you don't want to be in

0:19:230:19:29

and, erm...

0:19:290:19:30

In some ways it's a little bit my fault

0:19:320:19:35

because it was my original idea.

0:19:350:19:38

If Sharon decided to move out here and, obviously, she'll take all the family and so on.

0:19:400:19:45

Well, could I leave all my family and be the only one in the UK?

0:19:450:19:50

I'd have to make a sacrifice.

0:19:500:19:52

Back in the UK, the Coes hoped to raise £185,000

0:19:560:20:00

from the sale of their house.

0:20:000:20:02

We sent round a couple of estate agents to get their opinion.

0:20:020:20:06

If they couldn't get the right price,

0:20:060:20:09

renting it could have been an option, until values rose.

0:20:090:20:12

A good-sized study area, right by the front entrance hall.

0:20:140:20:17

I wish we'd tidied it up a bit!

0:20:170:20:18

LAUGHTER

0:20:180:20:20

That's a nice-sized lounge.

0:20:240:20:26

A very good-sized master bedroom.

0:20:280:20:31

Another reasonable size single bedroom. Very good.

0:20:320:20:36

For the current market conditions,

0:20:360:20:38

I would estimate the property will be worth around £175,000.

0:20:380:20:41

For a quick sale, I would estimate the owners

0:20:410:20:43

would have to take between 165 to 170,000.

0:20:430:20:47

For the current rental market, I'd estimate the property would achieve, £750 to £775 per calendar month.

0:20:490:20:55

For a quick sale, it'd need to be in the low 170s.

0:20:550:20:58

There's a number of similar properties in the local area

0:20:580:21:01

ranging from 150, 160,000 upwards.

0:21:010:21:05

That was more than £15,000 less than the Coes had hoped for.

0:21:060:21:11

I don't think selling it in the present market is an option for us.

0:21:110:21:15

No, we'll just rent it out until the market recovers.

0:21:150:21:22

I think that'll probably be the best option.

0:21:220:21:25

Then, of course, we've still got a home to go back to.

0:21:250:21:29

That sounded like a distinct lack of commitment!

0:21:290:21:32

Maybe the cost of living would make Justin think otherwise.

0:21:320:21:36

We prepared some figures to show them how far their money would go in New Zealand compared to the UK.

0:21:360:21:42

In New Zealand, it looks like we'd be earning £17,000 more than we earn in the UK,

0:21:440:21:51

-which is quite a difference, isn't it?

-It is.

-Yeah.

0:21:510:21:54

So we've got £3,275 of income. Yeah?

0:21:540:21:58

But your outgoings are 3,679.

0:22:010:22:05

According to these figures... OK?

0:22:070:22:10

-You're not earning enough in the UK for everything.

-No. you're right.

0:22:100:22:15

We can't afford to live in the UK,

0:22:150:22:18

and if you got a better salary, let's say your top rate,

0:22:180:22:22

-then you'd actually have spare money to spend.

-Yeah.

0:22:220:22:25

Now it's all down on paper, we can see where our money's going.

0:22:250:22:29

I've been cutting the shopping and that's why there isn't much food.

0:22:290:22:32

-There isn't the money to buy it.

-That why we've been eating beans.

0:22:320:22:36

Clearly, the Coes would have been better off in New Zealand.

0:22:360:22:40

But did that finally convince Justin?

0:22:400:22:42

Based on the cost of living in New Zealand to the UK, our vote goes to...

0:22:420:22:47

BOTH: New Zealand.

0:22:500:22:52

I'm pleased you did that one.

0:22:540:22:57

Well, it's a lot cheaper to live out here than in the UK.

0:22:570:23:00

-It is.

-So you'd have a much better lifestyle and you'd have money to spend on leisure activities.

0:23:000:23:05

At the moment our joint income in the UK can't sustain our living costs.

0:23:050:23:11

We don't have an extravagant lifestyle, it's a basic lifestyle.

0:23:110:23:15

In New Zealand, we could afford to live.

0:23:160:23:20

The Coes had been undecided about their possible future in New Zealand

0:23:250:23:29

and with things looking tougher at home,

0:23:290:23:32

would a life down under have been in their best interests?

0:23:320:23:35

Did seeing messages from home swing their votes yet again?

0:23:350:23:39

Come on, Ash.

0:23:390:23:41

Sharon is kind, caring...

0:23:420:23:45

Very generous.

0:23:460:23:48

To be honest, she's always there for you.

0:23:480:23:50

Justin, I'd say...

0:23:500:23:52

He's quite a joker, isn't he?

0:23:520:23:55

They're a good laugh.

0:23:550:23:59

Our Aunty Sharon would drop anything to come and help us.

0:23:590:24:04

She's quite an unselfish, caring sort of girl,

0:24:040:24:09

spoils everybody around her and always treats everybody.

0:24:090:24:14

-Sharon's always been very close to her mother.

-Yeah.

0:24:140:24:17

I'm very surprised that she has decided to do this.

0:24:170:24:23

I think she will miss her mother perhaps more than she realises.

0:24:230:24:29

If I had my way, she wouldn't go.

0:24:290:24:32

Like I say, it's her dream.

0:24:320:24:35

And...

0:24:350:24:36

Don't get upset.

0:24:410:24:43

It's her dream, but I shall miss her something chronic.

0:24:440:24:48

I probably won't see her again, once she goes.

0:24:480:24:51

It'll be like grieving for a lost daughter.

0:24:580:25:02

Well, the boys, as well and Justin...

0:25:030:25:07

No, to me it'll be a big loss.

0:25:090:25:12

You know that we're missing you already and, although it's only been a short while,

0:25:140:25:18

it feels like you could be out there for ever,

0:25:180:25:23

and, you know, we'll miss you.

0:25:230:25:25

Don't get too bowled over by the good life and look at all the aspects.

0:25:270:25:33

If you decide to stay out there, I shall miss you really terribly.

0:25:350:25:40

Whatever you do, look after my boys...

0:25:400:25:43

I can't...

0:25:450:25:46

I think the problem is, it's almost like we're going to die. It's like a bereavement for them.

0:25:510:25:56

If you don't give it a go, the regrets will be there for the rest of your life.

0:25:560:26:00

All those messages are, Sharon wants, Sharon wants. It's everything that you want in life.

0:26:000:26:06

-And, maybe not what all of us want in life.

-Yeah.

0:26:060:26:10

I've lived your life, you've had your career.

0:26:110:26:15

You've done everything you've wanted to do.

0:26:150:26:18

And now you've got to give a little way and let me have some.

0:26:180:26:22

We've come so far down the line, that we've got to give it a go

0:26:220:26:27

and see if this is what we want.

0:26:270:26:29

It had been a long week and now it was time to make the final vote.

0:26:290:26:34

It seemed the outcome was once again far from certain.

0:26:340:26:38

It was my idea in the beginning and I wish I didn't have these ideas sometimes.

0:26:390:26:45

I said, at the beginning of the week, it's going to be a make or break situation.

0:26:450:26:49

Maybe I'm the one who's breaking it and that's not fair on Sharon.

0:26:490:26:54

I have been here before.

0:26:550:26:57

Justin does keep chopping and changing his mind,

0:26:570:26:59

but I think this time I can win.

0:26:590:27:02

If Sharon and myself are still split after the vote, where do we go?

0:27:030:27:07

I think...I'd like to sit down with her

0:27:070:27:11

and have a good conversation

0:27:110:27:15

and weigh up the pros and cons and see how we go forwards,

0:27:150:27:18

not only with this decision, but our relationship.

0:27:180:27:21

I really don't know what's going to happen in the end.

0:27:210:27:26

Mum's very stubborn, but I think Dad normally relents,

0:27:260:27:29

but I don't think he'll relent on this. I really don't know.

0:27:290:27:32

With so much on the line, it really was a life-changing decision.

0:27:320:27:37

How did they vote?

0:27:370:27:39

Our final vote goes to...

0:27:430:27:45

-New Zealand.

-Undecided.

-UK.

0:27:510:27:54

You're still in the minority.

0:27:560:27:58

-You've got an undecided, two undecides.

-And two for New Zealand.

0:27:580:28:02

-You two are coming over here.

-It looks like two of us are.

0:28:020:28:05

It's been difficult. I nearly went for New Zealand just to keep the peace,

0:28:060:28:10

but I had to vote honestly and say where I'd like to live

0:28:100:28:14

and spend the rest of my days.

0:28:140:28:17

I think it'll be the good old UK.

0:28:170:28:19

As it stands, it looks like me and my eldest son are coming to New Zealand.

0:28:210:28:25

It had been a tough week for the Coes.

0:28:300:28:34

Their experiences of New Zealand had left them divided about where their future lay.

0:28:340:28:39

I caught up with the Coes a month later

0:28:400:28:43

to see if they'd reached an agreement.

0:28:430:28:45

Last time we'd seen Sharon, she had been dead set on moving to New Zealand,

0:28:450:28:49

with or without Justin.

0:28:490:28:52

You haven't changed your mind at all?

0:28:530:28:55

No, I haven't. I still want to live in New Zealand.

0:28:550:28:58

Does it scare you to think you're going to be moving that distance?

0:28:580:29:02

I am absolutely terrified to move that distance away,

0:29:020:29:06

but I've really got to try it. If I don't, it'll always be, "What if?"

0:29:060:29:10

I'm going to have a word with Justin

0:29:100:29:12

-and hear his thoughts on this possible move.

-Yeah.

0:29:120:29:16

Justin's heart was firmly in the UK,

0:29:170:29:19

but since the vote, he'd had a lot of time to think.

0:29:190:29:22

What's your final decision, or is there one?

0:29:240:29:28

I think it's still up in the air and watch this space and see where we are in a few months' time.

0:29:280:29:35

I think, ultimately, if Sharon moves out there and took the family with her,

0:29:350:29:40

do you really think I'd stay here?

0:29:400:29:42

No, I don't. I really, really don't.

0:29:420:29:45

I think you would follow her out and, I think, that's what she wants in her heart as well.

0:29:450:29:50

After a tough week in New Zealand, the Coe family were no closer

0:29:570:30:01

to making a decision about their future.

0:30:010:30:03

But was there just a glimmer of hope of Sharon's dream from Justin?

0:30:030:30:07

A year later, we've caught up with them to find out.

0:30:070:30:11

It's June 2012 and the Coe family are all together...

0:30:110:30:16

..in the UK. But that's about to change.

0:30:210:30:25

Our visas are just about to run out.

0:30:250:30:28

We've only got a few weeks left on it, so it's a case of,

0:30:280:30:32

do we go for another try in New Zealand and to get work,

0:30:320:30:36

or do we just let the visas lapse?

0:30:360:30:39

With Sharon more determined than ever,

0:30:390:30:41

the pressure was on Justin to finally make that decision.

0:30:410:30:45

I think Sharon's always decided that she's going to go back to New Zealand whatever, you know.

0:30:450:30:49

But, erm, it's just sort of trying to convince us whether, you know,

0:30:490:30:54

whether we should go out and give it another go.

0:30:540:30:58

So what's it to be?

0:30:590:31:01

You are going anyway, aren't you?

0:31:020:31:04

-Whatever happens, so...

-Yes. I'm going.

0:31:040:31:06

So it looks like I've got to go with them.

0:31:060:31:08

With only one week before they fly,

0:31:080:31:10

how did Sharon finally convince Justin

0:31:100:31:14

that New Zealand was a good move for the Coes?

0:31:140:31:16

I've been discussing with Justin for some time

0:31:160:31:19

about returning to New Zealand and I wasn't getting anywhere

0:31:190:31:22

so me and my daughter decided that we would just sit down

0:31:220:31:28

and book the tickets to go to New Zealand.

0:31:280:31:32

I booked them in my name so that he cannot cancel them.

0:31:320:31:36

It's either I stay here on my own or go out with them,

0:31:360:31:38

so it's just giving it that last bash, you know.

0:31:380:31:41

Also, I don't think that we wanted to look back at life and say,

0:31:410:31:45

"If only we'd gone out,

0:31:450:31:48

"maybe our children would have had a better life and so on."

0:31:480:31:51

Having rented out their house in Clacton,

0:31:510:31:53

the whole family have been living with Sharon's mum

0:31:530:31:56

for the past two months.

0:31:560:31:59

We're living with my mum in a two-bedroom bungalow,

0:31:590:32:01

which is very, very cramped so there are six of us

0:32:010:32:04

living in two bedrooms and an attic,

0:32:040:32:06

so it's very tight for space and we haven't got any room for anything

0:32:060:32:10

and my poor old mum can't even get in the bathroom.

0:32:100:32:14

Taking the house off the market was one less worry for Justin.

0:32:160:32:19

I think the thing that's made Justin feel more comfortable

0:32:190:32:24

about going to New Zealand is the fact that we haven't sold the house,

0:32:240:32:27

that it's only rented, and we have not lost the asset

0:32:270:32:30

or the money that we've gained over the years.

0:32:300:32:33

That has made him more comfortable to make the move.

0:32:330:32:36

With the tickets booked and only a few days left until they emigrate,

0:32:370:32:41

Sharon is as excited as ever, while Justin has some familiar concerns.

0:32:410:32:47

I'm very worried about being in this week before we fly

0:32:470:32:50

because he did cancel the flights before.

0:32:500:32:53

We are about the same...

0:32:530:32:55

We've got a week to go before we leave and...

0:32:550:32:59

I wonder if I could just say that maybe it's not such a good idea

0:33:010:33:04

-and...

-HE CHUCKLES

0:33:040:33:06

It's not only making the flight that's the big worry

0:33:060:33:08

for both of them, it's also staying put once they've arrived.

0:33:080:33:13

It's always, "When we come back," or, "If..."

0:33:130:33:17

You know, more or less saying that we are going to come back.

0:33:170:33:20

Just not planning too far in the future, you know?

0:33:210:33:24

We'll just go over, see how it is and then...

0:33:240:33:28

And then, if it's good, then we'll carry on.

0:33:280:33:31

If it's not, we'll be back.

0:33:310:33:34

-No, we're not coming back.

-No?

0:33:340:33:37

-No, I'm planning to live out there.

-Yes.

0:33:370:33:40

Sharon was always convinced the move would help her boys

0:33:420:33:45

lead more active lifestyles

0:33:450:33:47

and this was something that Justin couldn't argue with.

0:33:470:33:50

Towards the end of our trip to New Zealand

0:33:500:33:53

Jeremy, just all of a sudden,

0:33:530:33:55

we were sitting on the plane on the way home in Auckland,

0:33:550:33:58

and he said, "I've changed my mind, I want to stay in New Zealand."

0:33:580:34:02

It does make it a lot easier that everybody seems to want to go

0:34:020:34:05

and give New Zealand a go.

0:34:050:34:07

I think that I've got to go for that, for the children.

0:34:080:34:12

It's, you know, try and make their lives a little bit more successful

0:34:120:34:15

and give them a better future than I could in the UK.

0:34:150:34:19

With the clock ticking, there's been plenty to do,

0:34:230:34:26

for one of the Coes, at least.

0:34:260:34:28

To be fair, Sharon has done pretty much everything,

0:34:280:34:31

packed up the house, moved out

0:34:310:34:33

and I've been very reluctant.

0:34:330:34:36

You know, it's um...

0:34:360:34:38

I think if it was up to me, I would still be dragging my heels.

0:34:390:34:43

So, it's like my life is being packed up for me, which is...

0:34:440:34:47

I don't know if that is good or bad, I'll let you know.

0:34:470:34:51

I've already packed up once to go to New Zealand

0:34:520:34:54

and this is the second time around, so I've packed the boxes,

0:34:540:34:57

unpacked them and repacked them now for the second time,

0:34:570:35:01

so hopefully they won't be unpacked until they get to New Zealand now.

0:35:010:35:04

However Sharon's decision to leave suffered a serious blow

0:35:060:35:09

when her brother passed away suddenly.

0:35:090:35:12

I think at the moment, leaving my mum behind is quite bad

0:35:140:35:18

because of what's been happening in the last three months,

0:35:180:35:22

because she gets very upset and very depressed

0:35:220:35:24

because my brother's just passed, so she is already not in

0:35:240:35:27

a very good state of mind and then with me leaving as well,

0:35:270:35:31

it's like losing two children, rather than just one.

0:35:310:35:34

It has sort of like split the decision,

0:35:340:35:36

am I making the right decision to go? Because of my mum.

0:35:360:35:40

But I think we have gone too far down the road to actually turn back

0:35:400:35:44

at the moment. I think we have got to go and see what it's like.

0:35:440:35:49

Her decision to move to the other side of the world

0:35:500:35:52

was tested further when daughter Samantha decided

0:35:520:35:55

she wouldn't be staying on in the long-term.

0:35:550:35:58

She started a photography degree at Ipswich University,

0:35:580:36:01

a course she plans to complete in the UK.

0:36:010:36:05

Samantha is the only one that's undecided at the moment

0:36:050:36:08

on when she's going to come to New Zealand.

0:36:080:36:10

In the UK, she's got nine months to a year left on her degree.

0:36:100:36:15

I'm going out to New Zealand for two months with my family

0:36:160:36:19

and then I'm going to come back to finish the last year of my degree.

0:36:190:36:22

I'm not sure if I'll go out there once I finish my degree,

0:36:220:36:24

or stay here, it depends where I get work once I finished,

0:36:240:36:27

or if I decide to do postgraduate.

0:36:270:36:30

I'm very glad they've actually made a decision because I felt like

0:36:300:36:33

I'm not really settled anywhere for the last few years because

0:36:330:36:37

they're moving to New Zealand, they're not moving to New Zealand.

0:36:370:36:40

And there are benefits in having

0:36:400:36:41

a family on the other side of the world.

0:36:410:36:44

It just gives me a lot of choice.

0:36:440:36:45

I think so many people are so closed in once they finish their degree,

0:36:450:36:49

I've got a lot of options.

0:36:490:36:51

Samantha isn't the only one hitting the books.

0:36:520:36:54

Justin's continued work shortage inspired him to study

0:36:540:36:58

an accountancy course at Colchester Institute.

0:36:580:37:01

Rather than sort of waste my time,

0:37:010:37:03

I thought it was important that I had a professional qualification

0:37:030:37:07

that I could take across to,

0:37:070:37:09

not only construction industry, but also other industries as well.

0:37:090:37:15

After years of struggling to find work in the UK,

0:37:150:37:18

Justin can see the plus points in a move down under.

0:37:180:37:21

If I found work out there that I enjoyed,

0:37:210:37:24

it would be much easier to settle and carry on working,

0:37:240:37:28

but the main thing I'm optimistic about is the fact that

0:37:280:37:31

we can buy land out there to build a property.

0:37:310:37:34

Now, that would be an amazing thing, if I could do that for my children,

0:37:350:37:39

so when they start in life,

0:37:390:37:40

you know, we can actually build a house to their own specifications.

0:37:400:37:44

I think that would be a really positive thing to do.

0:37:440:37:48

There's always light at the end of the tunnel, you know?

0:37:480:37:50

But it's just whether it's a train coming the other way, or not!

0:37:500:37:54

There's not many around this area.

0:37:560:37:57

With Justin inspired by the thought of building a house,

0:37:570:38:00

they still need a rental property in the meantime.

0:38:000:38:03

Luckily help has been on hand.

0:38:030:38:05

I haven't actually had a lot of time to look on the internet

0:38:050:38:09

and research because I have been packing

0:38:090:38:11

and trying to sort out all of this side of stuff.

0:38:110:38:14

But my daughter is actually doing the research at the moment

0:38:140:38:17

and showing us.

0:38:170:38:19

She's looked and researched all the schools to find out

0:38:190:38:22

the best schools for my son to go to and the colleges,

0:38:220:38:25

she has done all of this for me

0:38:250:38:27

so she has been a real big help and taken some of the pressure off.

0:38:270:38:31

There's only a few days to go until the move.

0:38:310:38:34

Samantha has found them a place to stay,

0:38:340:38:37

but only for the first six weeks.

0:38:370:38:39

We found a very nice rental property in Onslow.

0:38:390:38:43

We could have booked it for longer, but we thought

0:38:430:38:46

by then we'd want our own place and start buying stuff for ourselves.

0:38:460:38:50

So, with the big day ever closer and emotions running high,

0:38:500:38:53

do they finally agree on how they feel about the move?

0:38:530:38:58

I'm feeling excited...nervous...

0:38:580:39:02

all rolled into one.

0:39:020:39:03

I feel sick to my stomach, honest to God.

0:39:050:39:07

It's...

0:39:070:39:09

It's a very...

0:39:090:39:11

It's a very scary thing to do.

0:39:120:39:14

I think once he gets settled and the children are settled,

0:39:150:39:19

mainly if the children are settled, then he'll be settled in his life

0:39:190:39:23

in New Zealand, but it's getting the children settled first.

0:39:230:39:26

Surely Justin can see some positives about living in New Zealand?

0:39:280:39:32

It's just having a comfortable living.

0:39:340:39:38

A nice home.

0:39:380:39:39

A nice home and also having the time to enjoy life.

0:39:390:39:43

Whether it's simple things like going swimming or whatever.

0:39:430:39:47

One of the things on Wellington Harbour is they've got

0:39:470:39:50

a diving board, that's planked out in the summer.

0:39:500:39:54

I'm looking forward to running off that diving board

0:39:540:39:57

and splashing into the sea. And that don't cost you nothing.

0:39:570:40:01

So, if that sort of sums up what life could be like, then,

0:40:010:40:04

it could be fun.

0:40:040:40:06

Justin and Sharon have faced many challenges in the past

0:40:060:40:09

and are looking forward to the future together.

0:40:090:40:12

This year will be our 25th wedding anniversary

0:40:130:40:17

so we wouldn't have stayed together that long

0:40:170:40:20

if this was the only decision.

0:40:200:40:23

If times are hard, it's a strain on any relationship.

0:40:230:40:27

So we just have to see, let's hope that times will be better for us.

0:40:270:40:31

The big day has arrived.

0:40:370:40:39

With bags packed and the family waiting to say their goodbyes,

0:40:390:40:42

it all seems to be happening.

0:40:420:40:44

Surely by now, Justin has come round to the idea.

0:40:460:40:48

I think I'll stay here, it's less stress!

0:40:480:40:51

But at least Sharon seems hopeful.

0:40:530:40:55

I think that Justin will get on the plane and I think he will go.

0:40:550:40:58

I think he has started looking for work and things like that

0:40:580:41:02

so he is getting in the mood to go.

0:41:020:41:05

I'll be very nervous at the airport

0:41:050:41:07

but very, very excited because I'm so looking forward to going.

0:41:070:41:11

All right? See you soon, all right?

0:41:130:41:16

'What's going to go through my mind is what I'm leaving behind.'

0:41:160:41:19

And, I think that on that journey to the airport

0:41:190:41:22

will be all those things of what I'm leaving behind,

0:41:220:41:26

but...yes.

0:41:260:41:28

You've got to be a little bit positive, haven't you?

0:41:280:41:31

And I'm just looking forward...

0:41:310:41:34

I hope things work out well for Sharon

0:41:340:41:36

and everything goes the way that she wants it.

0:41:360:41:39

For me, I don't care what happens to me.

0:41:390:41:42

You know, it's as long as they're all happy,

0:41:420:41:46

that's the most important thing.

0:41:460:41:48

So Justin has made it to the airport

0:41:520:41:55

and appears more positive about what's in store.

0:41:550:41:58

-He'll be OK.

-It'll be all right.

0:42:010:42:04

-I'm going to miss my home town and my family.

-I'm very excited,

0:42:040:42:08

I just want to get on my journey now cos I like travelling.

0:42:080:42:11

It's the end of a chapter.

0:42:120:42:14

You know, it may be the start of a new chapter.

0:42:140:42:17

Even though Justin still has his doubts,

0:42:210:42:24

the family know that it's time to look forward to a brighter future.

0:42:240:42:28

With all five of them making it onto the plane at last,

0:42:350:42:38

their adventure starts here.

0:42:380:42:40

So, after years of false starts and sleepless nights,

0:42:490:42:53

the Coe family are finally on their way to a new life down under.

0:42:530:42:57

Whatever the future holds, we wish them the best of luck.
