Choosing to emigrate halfway around the world | 0:00:05 | 0:00:08
can risk splitting your family in two, | 0:00:08 | 0:00:10
and in 2011, the Coe family were faced with exactly that prospect, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:15
as they decided whether to make the life-changing move to New Zealand. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
One year on, we're catching up with them to find out what happened next. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
The Coes' first attempt to move to New Zealand | 0:00:23 | 0:00:27
almost ended in disaster. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
It nearly broke our marriage. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
We didn't speak for about six months. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
And would another re-open old wounds? | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
You're not thinking straight. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
-I am. -No, you're not. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:41
With so much at stake, | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
have they been able to go through with it this time? | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
If times are hard, it's a strain on any relationship, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:50
you know, so we'll just have to see. | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
Let's hope times will be better for us. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
In 2011, the Coe family faced | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
one of the biggest decisions of their lives. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
After a week experiencing life in New Zealand, they had to choose | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
whether to stay in the UK or to make the move for good. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
Today, we're revisiting them | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
to find out what's happened since we last met. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
After 12,000 miles and a gruelling 24 hours in the air, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:41
the Coes touch down in Wellington, tired but excited. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
I hope this week we might be able to, you know, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
sort of really be proactive and really give it a go. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
I'm looking optimistic for a job, and hopefully I'll find something | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
and hopefully I'll stay. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
'I feel really ready to go.' | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
In 2011, the Coe family lived in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:11
Sharon and Justin, then aged 46, | 0:02:11 | 0:02:15
were parents to 21-year-old Samantha, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
18-year-old Ashley | 0:02:17 | 0:02:19
and Jeremy, who was 14. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
Justin had his own carpentry business | 0:02:21 | 0:02:24
and Sharon had recently qualified as an accounting technician. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
For years, Justin dreamt of moving his family | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
for a better life in New Zealand. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
After some initial reluctance, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:35
Sharon was soon caught up with the romance of the idea. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
My initial thoughts about moving to New Zealand | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
were I was a bit upset about leaving my mum, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
but then it became a bit of an adventure | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
and I've got into this adventure | 0:02:46 | 0:02:48
and I just want to be in New Zealand. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
In 2009, with their bags packed and visas stamped, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:54
the Coes were all set for a new life in New Zealand | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
until Justin dropped a bombshell. | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
One morning, I woke up in bed | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
and Justin came and sat on the edge of the bed | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
and said "I don't want to move to New Zealand." | 0:03:05 | 0:03:07
That's literally his first words of how he broke it to me | 0:03:07 | 0:03:10
that he didn't want to go to New Zealand. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
He just sat on the edge of the bed and said, "I don't want to go." | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
I was told that there were no employment prospects for me | 0:03:15 | 0:03:19
because they were only going to employ locals and so on. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:23
I sort of got cold feet right at the last minute. | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
Well, the week before we flew. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
So I cancelled the tickets and decided to stay in the UK. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:32
It nearly broke our marriage. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:34
We didn't speak for about six months. | 0:03:34 | 0:03:37
After the recession, | 0:03:37 | 0:03:38
the situation in the UK had been made even worse. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:41
'Work's been hit and miss.' | 0:03:41 | 0:03:43
The phone hardly ever rings. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
You know, I can probably count on one hand | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
how many times I stay at home as opposed to go to work. | 0:03:48 | 0:03:52
It's been really, really hard. | 0:03:52 | 0:03:54
I lost my job last year and we've just literally had no income. | 0:03:54 | 0:03:58
Coming from a very vibrant family with enough money to cover you, | 0:03:58 | 0:04:02
we've gone down to having virtually nothing. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
We're living hand to mouth. | 0:04:05 | 0:04:07
Money comes in and by the end of the month, the bank account's empty. | 0:04:07 | 0:04:11
With their age against them and only a year left on their visa, | 0:04:11 | 0:04:15
it was Sharon's final hope of convincing him | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
their future together lay down under. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
I still feel a bit let down. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:24
I'm still wondering whether or not | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
he's actually going to come out and stay with me. | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
But it wasn't only Justin who was in two minds about emigrating. | 0:04:28 | 0:04:33
Daughter Samantha was at university | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
and wasn't sure if moving was right for her. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:38
I'm 21, I've got a lot of things here, | 0:04:38 | 0:04:41
and also education is really important at the moment for me. | 0:04:41 | 0:04:44
I might not like the universities out there. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:47
And, erm... it's just quite difficult. | 0:04:47 | 0:04:50
Sharon and Justin hoped New Zealand would give their sons | 0:04:50 | 0:04:54
a better quality of life, | 0:04:54 | 0:04:56
especially Ashley, who suffered from autism. | 0:04:56 | 0:04:59
I'd like the boys to have more sports in their lives | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
because here they don't do many sports, they just sit at home on their computers. | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
Whereas in New Zealand, they seem to like the snowboarding. | 0:05:05 | 0:05:09
I'm hoping to get them into other sports as well, | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
which will get them off their backsides and doing something. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:16
They faced a massive decision. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:19
One that could have also decided the future of their marriage. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:23
In my mind, yes, I'm going and I'm staying. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:26
My two boys will stay with me. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:27
For me, it's now or never. | 0:05:27 | 0:05:30
It's just that choice in life, you know. | 0:05:30 | 0:05:33
So, it is the last chance. | 0:05:33 | 0:05:36
The Coes visited Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, | 0:05:41 | 0:05:45
a popular, but expensive, destination for Brits. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
Were the family going to be in for a shock? | 0:05:48 | 0:05:52
They stayed in a modern apartment in the heart of the city, | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
but what was Justin's reaction? | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58
This looks a little bit different, doesn't it? | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
Different to what we've got back at home, isn't it? | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
Oh, this is nice. I like that. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:11
Sharon, make some tea. I'll be watching TV. | 0:06:11 | 0:06:14
-No, you make the tea! -Can we work out how to put heating on? | 0:06:14 | 0:06:17
I thought I'd come to a semi-tropical island. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:19
It's really cold here, isn't it? | 0:06:19 | 0:06:22
And it wasn't just the apartment that left him cold. | 0:06:22 | 0:06:26
I would say, from what I've seen, | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
it's not quite what it is on the postcards or the internet. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
It does look a little bit run-down to me. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
For a capital city, I'm very surprised at that. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:38
And Justin's worries had Sharon concerned. | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
It's playing on my mind quite a lot that he might not want to stay here. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
And I really want to stay here. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:48
In the UK, the Coe family had a four-bedroom detached house | 0:06:54 | 0:06:57
in Clacton-on-Sea in Essex. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:00
It was on the market for £185,000. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:03
They had strong ideas of what they wanted from their ideal home. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:09
I guess my dream house would be a property that looks over a lake | 0:07:09 | 0:07:14
or over the sea, because I've always lived near the water | 0:07:14 | 0:07:17
and I think a changing view is fantastic. | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
The ideal house I'd like is I wouldn't want one | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
that's right in the town centre. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
I'd like something slightly out in the suburbs. | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
It's got to have enough bedrooms, | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
because my boys like their own rooms. | 0:07:29 | 0:07:31
Just one with a bit more space. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
We arranged for the Coes to get a taste | 0:07:35 | 0:07:37
of Wellington's housing market. We showed them three options | 0:07:37 | 0:07:40
based upon what they wanted, what they could afford | 0:07:40 | 0:07:44
and the real price of property down under. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
Only after checking out each home would the family discover its price. | 0:07:47 | 0:07:52
First stop was at a four-bedroom house | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
in the popular Paraparaumu area, 45 minutes | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
from the centre of Wellington. | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
The house could offer them plenty of space, if they could get inside. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
This must be the way in. Can't be, can it? | 0:08:06 | 0:08:12
Yep, that's the way in. | 0:08:12 | 0:08:15
Well if it is, it's a climb round, isn't it? | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
Justin was struggling to see the potential in the house. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
At first I thought this was a do-up, | 0:08:23 | 0:08:26
but people were actually living in it. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
It's quite surprising, because I wouldn't live like this. Would you? | 0:08:28 | 0:08:33
No. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:34 | |
However, upstairs there was a big plus for Sharon. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:38
-You can see real fantastic views. -Yeah. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:42
It reminds me so much of Clacton. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
-No, it doesn't. -No, that's true. It doesn't. | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
And there was a dream feature for Justin too. Well, sort of. | 0:08:46 | 0:08:51
I've always wanted to put that into a house. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:53
-A laundry chute? -Yeah. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
-That saves a lot of time. -Doesn't it? | 0:08:55 | 0:08:57
-That's brilliant. -Straight into the washing machine. | 0:08:57 | 0:09:00
The house is sold. Just with that, it's fantastic. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
Despite all the space inside, the views and the laundry chute, | 0:09:03 | 0:09:08
had the house convinced anyone? | 0:09:08 | 0:09:10
-Could you see yourself living here? -No. | 0:09:10 | 0:09:12
Well, that was that sorted. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
The house hadn't won them over, | 0:09:15 | 0:09:17
but what about its cost? With New Zealand property prices | 0:09:17 | 0:09:20
rising so much in recent years, | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
could they even afford it? | 0:09:22 | 0:09:25
£194,000 | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
or 380,000 | 0:09:31 | 0:09:34
-is sort of almost at the top of the budget. -Yeah. | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
I would definitely want a garden | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
if I was paying that kind of money. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:42
It makes me think that although this is a much larger house, | 0:09:42 | 0:09:46
my little house is nicer | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
because it's all done up and how we want it. | 0:09:49 | 0:09:52
-And you can get through the front door. -Yeah. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:55
It was a setback for Sharon. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:57
Convincing Justin to leave Essex | 0:09:57 | 0:10:00
would be even tougher if this was all they could afford. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
Perhaps the second property would fare better? | 0:10:03 | 0:10:06
It was a four-bedroom house in the Paremata area, | 0:10:06 | 0:10:09
close to the centre of Wellington, which was good for work. | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
Hopefully it had a better build quality for Justin... | 0:10:12 | 0:10:15
-It's nice. -Looks like it's made of plywood, though. | 0:10:15 | 0:10:18
..or not. | 0:10:18 | 0:10:20
Inside though, it was a very different story. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:24
-This is much cosier. -Wow, lovely. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:28
This is beautiful. Not in our price range though, is it? | 0:10:30 | 0:10:33
Better go and find some more money then. | 0:10:33 | 0:10:35
Yeah. Got to work harder, haven't I? | 0:10:35 | 0:10:37
It's got a more cosy feeling to it. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:40
That's the log fire, mate. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:43
This really is a dream home. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:48
This house was an instant hit | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
and it was certainly bigger than they were used to. | 0:10:51 | 0:10:54
-Wow. -Look at the size of this room. Unbelievable, isn't it? | 0:10:56 | 0:11:00
-That's as big as Jeremy's bedroom! -Exactly. | 0:11:00 | 0:11:03
Even the views were bigger. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
-Oh, look at this. -Wow. | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
You'd have to take up yodelling for a living. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:15
Look at that. It's snowing like in the Swiss Alps. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:17
I don't want it to stay, though. I'd like warm weather. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:22
Despite the chill, this house had left both Justin and Sharon | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
with a warm glow. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:27
And the children seem to have had a change of heart too. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:31
I think it's quite nice. I just love how it looks | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
and the feeling you get from it. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:36
-We love it. -It's amazing! | 0:11:36 | 0:11:39
The house looked like a genuine dream for the Coes. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:45
But was it within their £200,000 budget? | 0:11:45 | 0:11:49
-How much is it? -A million quid? -No, it's not! | 0:11:52 | 0:11:55
No. £330,000. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:58
That's still out of your price range. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:00
I just think it is within our grasp if we both work hard. | 0:12:00 | 0:12:04
We do work hard and I think we can still achieve this. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:07
You're not thinking straight, you know. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:10
-I am. -No, you're not. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
I'm sorry, you're just looking at it with, you know... | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
Because this is what you want. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:17
Yeah. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:19 | |
Yeah, but it's not going to happen. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:21
Ouch! It wasn't just the weather that had turned frosty. | 0:12:21 | 0:12:25
It was definitely time to move on to the next property. | 0:12:25 | 0:12:28
The third house was in the coastal village of Raumati South. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:33
The big, open plan living area | 0:12:33 | 0:12:35
would have given them plenty of space inside. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:37
It had views that Sharon loved, but it did need some TLC. | 0:12:37 | 0:12:42
This has got a nice view, from this room. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:49
It's not a bad sized room. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:51
This property is a little bit closer to the city, | 0:12:51 | 0:12:54
-which is a good thing. -Yeah. -Again, it needs work. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
That's the thing. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
It's not a bad property. I think the gardens are nice. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:04
It's got a lot of ground. Whereas, the others haven't had quite as much ground. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:08
Again, the glass was half full for Sharon | 0:13:08 | 0:13:11
but did the price of this house come as a surprise? | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
£235,000... | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
-You would have to spend a good £50,000... -To bring it up, yeah. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:25
To bring it up to standard. | 0:13:25 | 0:13:27
That meant, in total, the house could end up | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
£100,000 over their budget. | 0:13:30 | 0:13:34
It had been a tough day viewing all three properties, | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
with none of them really making the grade. So how did they vote? | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
Based on the properties that we've looked at today, our vote goes to... | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
-England. -New Zealand! | 0:13:48 | 0:13:50
-What did you do that for? -There was one nice house | 0:13:53 | 0:13:55
but you've got to look at all the others that we looked at. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:58
I think the New Zealand properties are better. | 0:13:58 | 0:14:01
So, you all went... Well, Jeremy might be on my side. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:04
He's sick and tired of living in a cupboard! | 0:14:04 | 0:14:06
If Justin really couldn't see himself in a New Zealand house, | 0:14:06 | 0:14:10
would it spell the end for Sharon's dream? | 0:14:10 | 0:14:14
Back home Justin ran his own carpentry business | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
but in New Zealand he would have to be employed for two years | 0:14:21 | 0:14:24
before he could set up on his own. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
A lack of job prospects put an end to the last move, | 0:14:26 | 0:14:29
and he still had big worries. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:31
Originally when we looked to emigrating to New Zealand | 0:14:31 | 0:14:33
there were good business opportunities for me out there | 0:14:33 | 0:14:36
and a good lifestyle for the family. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
Since the recession, that's hit the construction industry very hard | 0:14:39 | 0:14:43
so it means those opportunities no longer exist for me, or I don't believe that they do. | 0:14:43 | 0:14:48
Sharon had lost her job | 0:14:50 | 0:14:51
as an accounting technician during the recession, | 0:14:51 | 0:14:54
which left the Coes struggling to make ends meet. | 0:14:54 | 0:14:57
She was hoping for better luck in New Zealand. | 0:14:57 | 0:15:00
By the looks of it, prospects are a lot better for me out there, than they are here. | 0:15:00 | 0:15:05
On this trip I am looking for a job. | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
If I find one, then I'll stay. | 0:15:07 | 0:15:09
We arranged for Justin to spend the day with a local building company. | 0:15:10 | 0:15:14
Paul Winstanley emigrated from the UK | 0:15:14 | 0:15:17
and had a thriving renovation business. | 0:15:17 | 0:15:20
He was quick to address Justin's concerns. | 0:15:20 | 0:15:24
Would you say there's a plentiful supply of skilled tradesmen to call on here? | 0:15:24 | 0:15:27
No, I think there's a huge shortage of skills in New Zealand | 0:15:27 | 0:15:31
and we've got a massive housing shortage looming. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:34
Going forward, there's going to be massive demand for qualified people. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:40
That was ideal news, but only if Justin could handle being an employee rather than the boss. | 0:15:40 | 0:15:47
Across town, Sharon was heading to check on her job prospects. | 0:15:48 | 0:15:53
Having put family ahead of her career, working down under | 0:15:53 | 0:15:55
meant a lot more than earning a decent salary. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:58
I've brought up the kids and done all that sort of thing for now. | 0:15:58 | 0:16:02
Now I want a career of my own. It isn't just about the money, no, | 0:16:02 | 0:16:06
it's more to do with that I want something that I can find, | 0:16:06 | 0:16:09
that I enjoy and can get my teeth into and progress to a higher level. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:13
She met with recruitment agent, Sharlene Yule, | 0:16:13 | 0:16:16
but would there be good news? | 0:16:16 | 0:16:18
Actually, the market's very buoyant. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:20
There's a lot of work on. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
I see you've got your accounting technician qualification. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:25
That's recognised here in New Zealand. What you've got, in terms of your skills and experience, | 0:16:25 | 0:16:30
you can hit the ground running, in terms of work. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:33
That was promising, so what about the pay? | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
The range here in Wellington can be anything between 55,000 and 65,000. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:42
Which is about 27 to £32,000, which is a lot more than I expected. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:47
Well, you've got good skills and good experience, | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
-you want to be recognised for those. -Thank you. | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
Good accounts people are really difficult to find. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:56
It looked like Sharon's dreams were all coming true. | 0:16:56 | 0:16:59
There was plenty of work and she could earn more than her and Justin's combined UK salaries. | 0:16:59 | 0:17:04
That was brilliant because I think I could get myself a job in New Zealand. | 0:17:04 | 0:17:08
I think I'm staying. | 0:17:09 | 0:17:11
It looked as if Sharon wouldn't take "no" for an answer now, | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
but a cautious Justin still needed some reassuring. | 0:17:14 | 0:17:17
He had some big questions. | 0:17:17 | 0:17:20
What sort of money would a tradesman get out here? | 0:17:20 | 0:17:24
Depending on age and experience, we would offer between 18 and 25. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:30
-That's an hour. -That's between ten and £12.50 an hour. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:35
Yes, it's about that. | 0:17:35 | 0:17:37
-Are you advertising for anyone at the moment? -Yes, we are. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:42
We've got a huge volume of work to do. We're booked up till March at the moment. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:48
-Work booked right into next year? -Yeah, it is. | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
There's no shortage of work coming in at the moment. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:56
That was more good news, | 0:17:56 | 0:17:58
but would the promise of work and a bigger salary | 0:17:58 | 0:18:01
compensate Justin for leaving behind everything he'd built up at home? | 0:18:01 | 0:18:06
Do I carry on in my own business or do I come out here and start working for somebody? | 0:18:06 | 0:18:10
That's something I'd find difficult to adjust to. | 0:18:10 | 0:18:14
So which way did he vote? | 0:18:14 | 0:18:17
UK. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:20 | |
No prizes for guessing which way Sharon voted. | 0:18:20 | 0:18:24
New Zealand! | 0:18:27 | 0:18:28
It had been quite a day, | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
and it looked like there was plenty to talk about back at the apartment. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:34
-Well, how did you get on? -Really good. -Yeah? -Yeah. | 0:18:35 | 0:18:39
We're staying here. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:41
-Oh, that's not so good, then, is it? -Yes, it's brilliant! | 0:18:41 | 0:18:45
-I reckon I'll get a job, easy. -That's quite promising, isn't it? | 0:18:45 | 0:18:50
-Knowing I can get work, we've got to move here. -We'll have to discuss that... | 0:18:50 | 0:18:56
It's going to be hard for me to wrench myself away from the UK. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:02
But it's not all about me, is it? It's about the family as well. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:08
-No, that's it. -Yeah. | 0:19:08 | 0:19:10
We'll see how we go, then. | 0:19:11 | 0:19:13
But if the weather's like this, I'm not moving out here! | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
Even though there was work for both of them in New Zealand, | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
Sharon and Justin didn't seem any closer to a decision on their future. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
Sometimes you're being forced into a corner, that you don't want to be in | 0:19:23 | 0:19:29
and, erm... | 0:19:29 | 0:19:30
In some ways it's a little bit my fault | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
because it was my original idea. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
If Sharon decided to move out here and, obviously, she'll take all the family and so on. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:45
Well, could I leave all my family and be the only one in the UK? | 0:19:45 | 0:19:50
I'd have to make a sacrifice. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:52
Back in the UK, the Coes hoped to raise £185,000 | 0:19:56 | 0:20:00
from the sale of their house. | 0:20:00 | 0:20:02
We sent round a couple of estate agents to get their opinion. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:06
If they couldn't get the right price, | 0:20:06 | 0:20:09
renting it could have been an option, until values rose. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
A good-sized study area, right by the front entrance hall. | 0:20:14 | 0:20:17
I wish we'd tidied it up a bit! | 0:20:17 | 0:20:18
LAUGHTER | 0:20:18 | 0:20:20
That's a nice-sized lounge. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:26
A very good-sized master bedroom. | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
Another reasonable size single bedroom. Very good. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:36
For the current market conditions, | 0:20:36 | 0:20:38
I would estimate the property will be worth around £175,000. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:41
For a quick sale, I would estimate the owners | 0:20:41 | 0:20:43
would have to take between 165 to 170,000. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:47
For the current rental market, I'd estimate the property would achieve, £750 to £775 per calendar month. | 0:20:49 | 0:20:55
For a quick sale, it'd need to be in the low 170s. | 0:20:55 | 0:20:58
There's a number of similar properties in the local area | 0:20:58 | 0:21:01
ranging from 150, 160,000 upwards. | 0:21:01 | 0:21:05
That was more than £15,000 less than the Coes had hoped for. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:11
I don't think selling it in the present market is an option for us. | 0:21:11 | 0:21:15
No, we'll just rent it out until the market recovers. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:22
I think that'll probably be the best option. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:25
Then, of course, we've still got a home to go back to. | 0:21:25 | 0:21:29
That sounded like a distinct lack of commitment! | 0:21:29 | 0:21:32
Maybe the cost of living would make Justin think otherwise. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:36
We prepared some figures to show them how far their money would go in New Zealand compared to the UK. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:42
In New Zealand, it looks like we'd be earning £17,000 more than we earn in the UK, | 0:21:44 | 0:21:51
-which is quite a difference, isn't it? -It is. -Yeah. | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
So we've got £3,275 of income. Yeah? | 0:21:54 | 0:21:58
But your outgoings are 3,679. | 0:22:01 | 0:22:05
According to these figures... OK? | 0:22:07 | 0:22:10
-You're not earning enough in the UK for everything. -No. you're right. | 0:22:10 | 0:22:15
We can't afford to live in the UK, | 0:22:15 | 0:22:18
and if you got a better salary, let's say your top rate, | 0:22:18 | 0:22:22
-then you'd actually have spare money to spend. -Yeah. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:25
Now it's all down on paper, we can see where our money's going. | 0:22:25 | 0:22:29
I've been cutting the shopping and that's why there isn't much food. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:32
-There isn't the money to buy it. -That why we've been eating beans. | 0:22:32 | 0:22:36
Clearly, the Coes would have been better off in New Zealand. | 0:22:36 | 0:22:40
But did that finally convince Justin? | 0:22:40 | 0:22:42
Based on the cost of living in New Zealand to the UK, our vote goes to... | 0:22:42 | 0:22:47
BOTH: New Zealand. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:52
I'm pleased you did that one. | 0:22:54 | 0:22:57
Well, it's a lot cheaper to live out here than in the UK. | 0:22:57 | 0:23:00
-It is. -So you'd have a much better lifestyle and you'd have money to spend on leisure activities. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:05
At the moment our joint income in the UK can't sustain our living costs. | 0:23:05 | 0:23:11
We don't have an extravagant lifestyle, it's a basic lifestyle. | 0:23:11 | 0:23:15
In New Zealand, we could afford to live. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:20
The Coes had been undecided about their possible future in New Zealand | 0:23:25 | 0:23:29
and with things looking tougher at home, | 0:23:29 | 0:23:32
would a life down under have been in their best interests? | 0:23:32 | 0:23:35
Did seeing messages from home swing their votes yet again? | 0:23:35 | 0:23:39
Come on, Ash. | 0:23:39 | 0:23:41
Sharon is kind, caring... | 0:23:42 | 0:23:45
Very generous. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:48
To be honest, she's always there for you. | 0:23:48 | 0:23:50
Justin, I'd say... | 0:23:50 | 0:23:52
He's quite a joker, isn't he? | 0:23:52 | 0:23:55
They're a good laugh. | 0:23:55 | 0:23:59
Our Aunty Sharon would drop anything to come and help us. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:04
She's quite an unselfish, caring sort of girl, | 0:24:04 | 0:24:09
spoils everybody around her and always treats everybody. | 0:24:09 | 0:24:14
-Sharon's always been very close to her mother. -Yeah. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:17
I'm very surprised that she has decided to do this. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:23
I think she will miss her mother perhaps more than she realises. | 0:24:23 | 0:24:29
If I had my way, she wouldn't go. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:32
Like I say, it's her dream. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:35
And... | 0:24:35 | 0:24:36
Don't get upset. | 0:24:41 | 0:24:43
It's her dream, but I shall miss her something chronic. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:48
I probably won't see her again, once she goes. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
It'll be like grieving for a lost daughter. | 0:24:58 | 0:25:02
Well, the boys, as well and Justin... | 0:25:03 | 0:25:07
No, to me it'll be a big loss. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
You know that we're missing you already and, although it's only been a short while, | 0:25:14 | 0:25:18
it feels like you could be out there for ever, | 0:25:18 | 0:25:23
and, you know, we'll miss you. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:25
Don't get too bowled over by the good life and look at all the aspects. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:33
If you decide to stay out there, I shall miss you really terribly. | 0:25:35 | 0:25:40
Whatever you do, look after my boys... | 0:25:40 | 0:25:43
I can't... | 0:25:45 | 0:25:46
I think the problem is, it's almost like we're going to die. It's like a bereavement for them. | 0:25:51 | 0:25:56
If you don't give it a go, the regrets will be there for the rest of your life. | 0:25:56 | 0:26:00
All those messages are, Sharon wants, Sharon wants. It's everything that you want in life. | 0:26:00 | 0:26:06
-And, maybe not what all of us want in life. -Yeah. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:10
I've lived your life, you've had your career. | 0:26:11 | 0:26:15
You've done everything you've wanted to do. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:18
And now you've got to give a little way and let me have some. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:22
We've come so far down the line, that we've got to give it a go | 0:26:22 | 0:26:27
and see if this is what we want. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:29
It had been a long week and now it was time to make the final vote. | 0:26:29 | 0:26:34
It seemed the outcome was once again far from certain. | 0:26:34 | 0:26:38
It was my idea in the beginning and I wish I didn't have these ideas sometimes. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:45
I said, at the beginning of the week, it's going to be a make or break situation. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:49
Maybe I'm the one who's breaking it and that's not fair on Sharon. | 0:26:49 | 0:26:54
I have been here before. | 0:26:55 | 0:26:57
Justin does keep chopping and changing his mind, | 0:26:57 | 0:26:59
but I think this time I can win. | 0:26:59 | 0:27:02
If Sharon and myself are still split after the vote, where do we go? | 0:27:03 | 0:27:07
I think...I'd like to sit down with her | 0:27:07 | 0:27:11
and have a good conversation | 0:27:11 | 0:27:15
and weigh up the pros and cons and see how we go forwards, | 0:27:15 | 0:27:18
not only with this decision, but our relationship. | 0:27:18 | 0:27:21
I really don't know what's going to happen in the end. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:26
Mum's very stubborn, but I think Dad normally relents, | 0:27:26 | 0:27:29
but I don't think he'll relent on this. I really don't know. | 0:27:29 | 0:27:32
With so much on the line, it really was a life-changing decision. | 0:27:32 | 0:27:37
How did they vote? | 0:27:37 | 0:27:39
Our final vote goes to... | 0:27:43 | 0:27:45
-New Zealand. -Undecided. -UK. | 0:27:51 | 0:27:54
You're still in the minority. | 0:27:56 | 0:27:58
-You've got an undecided, two undecides. -And two for New Zealand. | 0:27:58 | 0:28:02
-You two are coming over here. -It looks like two of us are. | 0:28:02 | 0:28:05
It's been difficult. I nearly went for New Zealand just to keep the peace, | 0:28:06 | 0:28:10
but I had to vote honestly and say where I'd like to live | 0:28:10 | 0:28:14
and spend the rest of my days. | 0:28:14 | 0:28:17
I think it'll be the good old UK. | 0:28:17 | 0:28:19
As it stands, it looks like me and my eldest son are coming to New Zealand. | 0:28:21 | 0:28:25
It had been a tough week for the Coes. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:34
Their experiences of New Zealand had left them divided about where their future lay. | 0:28:34 | 0:28:39
I caught up with the Coes a month later | 0:28:40 | 0:28:43
to see if they'd reached an agreement. | 0:28:43 | 0:28:45
Last time we'd seen Sharon, she had been dead set on moving to New Zealand, | 0:28:45 | 0:28:49
with or without Justin. | 0:28:49 | 0:28:52
You haven't changed your mind at all? | 0:28:53 | 0:28:55
No, I haven't. I still want to live in New Zealand. | 0:28:55 | 0:28:58
Does it scare you to think you're going to be moving that distance? | 0:28:58 | 0:29:02
I am absolutely terrified to move that distance away, | 0:29:02 | 0:29:06
but I've really got to try it. If I don't, it'll always be, "What if?" | 0:29:06 | 0:29:10
I'm going to have a word with Justin | 0:29:10 | 0:29:12
-and hear his thoughts on this possible move. -Yeah. | 0:29:12 | 0:29:16
Justin's heart was firmly in the UK, | 0:29:17 | 0:29:19
but since the vote, he'd had a lot of time to think. | 0:29:19 | 0:29:22
What's your final decision, or is there one? | 0:29:24 | 0:29:28
I think it's still up in the air and watch this space and see where we are in a few months' time. | 0:29:28 | 0:29:35
I think, ultimately, if Sharon moves out there and took the family with her, | 0:29:35 | 0:29:40
do you really think I'd stay here? | 0:29:40 | 0:29:42
No, I don't. I really, really don't. | 0:29:42 | 0:29:45
I think you would follow her out and, I think, that's what she wants in her heart as well. | 0:29:45 | 0:29:50
After a tough week in New Zealand, the Coe family were no closer | 0:29:57 | 0:30:01
to making a decision about their future. | 0:30:01 | 0:30:03
But was there just a glimmer of hope of Sharon's dream from Justin? | 0:30:03 | 0:30:07
A year later, we've caught up with them to find out. | 0:30:07 | 0:30:11
It's June 2012 and the Coe family are all together... | 0:30:11 | 0:30:16
..in the UK. But that's about to change. | 0:30:21 | 0:30:25
Our visas are just about to run out. | 0:30:25 | 0:30:28
We've only got a few weeks left on it, so it's a case of, | 0:30:28 | 0:30:32
do we go for another try in New Zealand and to get work, | 0:30:32 | 0:30:36
or do we just let the visas lapse? | 0:30:36 | 0:30:39
With Sharon more determined than ever, | 0:30:39 | 0:30:41
the pressure was on Justin to finally make that decision. | 0:30:41 | 0:30:45
I think Sharon's always decided that she's going to go back to New Zealand whatever, you know. | 0:30:45 | 0:30:49
But, erm, it's just sort of trying to convince us whether, you know, | 0:30:49 | 0:30:54
whether we should go out and give it another go. | 0:30:54 | 0:30:58
So what's it to be? | 0:30:59 | 0:31:01
You are going anyway, aren't you? | 0:31:02 | 0:31:04
-Whatever happens, so... -Yes. I'm going. | 0:31:04 | 0:31:06
So it looks like I've got to go with them. | 0:31:06 | 0:31:08
With only one week before they fly, | 0:31:08 | 0:31:10
how did Sharon finally convince Justin | 0:31:10 | 0:31:14
that New Zealand was a good move for the Coes? | 0:31:14 | 0:31:16
I've been discussing with Justin for some time | 0:31:16 | 0:31:19
about returning to New Zealand and I wasn't getting anywhere | 0:31:19 | 0:31:22
so me and my daughter decided that we would just sit down | 0:31:22 | 0:31:28
and book the tickets to go to New Zealand. | 0:31:28 | 0:31:32
I booked them in my name so that he cannot cancel them. | 0:31:32 | 0:31:36
It's either I stay here on my own or go out with them, | 0:31:36 | 0:31:38
so it's just giving it that last bash, you know. | 0:31:38 | 0:31:41
Also, I don't think that we wanted to look back at life and say, | 0:31:41 | 0:31:45
"If only we'd gone out, | 0:31:45 | 0:31:48
"maybe our children would have had a better life and so on." | 0:31:48 | 0:31:51
Having rented out their house in Clacton, | 0:31:51 | 0:31:53
the whole family have been living with Sharon's mum | 0:31:53 | 0:31:56
for the past two months. | 0:31:56 | 0:31:59
We're living with my mum in a two-bedroom bungalow, | 0:31:59 | 0:32:01
which is very, very cramped so there are six of us | 0:32:01 | 0:32:04
living in two bedrooms and an attic, | 0:32:04 | 0:32:06
so it's very tight for space and we haven't got any room for anything | 0:32:06 | 0:32:10
and my poor old mum can't even get in the bathroom. | 0:32:10 | 0:32:14
Taking the house off the market was one less worry for Justin. | 0:32:16 | 0:32:19
I think the thing that's made Justin feel more comfortable | 0:32:19 | 0:32:24
about going to New Zealand is the fact that we haven't sold the house, | 0:32:24 | 0:32:27
that it's only rented, and we have not lost the asset | 0:32:27 | 0:32:30
or the money that we've gained over the years. | 0:32:30 | 0:32:33
That has made him more comfortable to make the move. | 0:32:33 | 0:32:36
With the tickets booked and only a few days left until they emigrate, | 0:32:37 | 0:32:41
Sharon is as excited as ever, while Justin has some familiar concerns. | 0:32:41 | 0:32:47
I'm very worried about being in this week before we fly | 0:32:47 | 0:32:50
because he did cancel the flights before. | 0:32:50 | 0:32:53
We are about the same... | 0:32:53 | 0:32:55
We've got a week to go before we leave and... | 0:32:55 | 0:32:59
I wonder if I could just say that maybe it's not such a good idea | 0:33:01 | 0:33:04
-and... -HE CHUCKLES | 0:33:04 | 0:33:06
It's not only making the flight that's the big worry | 0:33:06 | 0:33:08
for both of them, it's also staying put once they've arrived. | 0:33:08 | 0:33:13
It's always, "When we come back," or, "If..." | 0:33:13 | 0:33:17
You know, more or less saying that we are going to come back. | 0:33:17 | 0:33:20
Just not planning too far in the future, you know? | 0:33:21 | 0:33:24
We'll just go over, see how it is and then... | 0:33:24 | 0:33:28
And then, if it's good, then we'll carry on. | 0:33:28 | 0:33:31
If it's not, we'll be back. | 0:33:31 | 0:33:34
-No, we're not coming back. -No? | 0:33:34 | 0:33:37
-No, I'm planning to live out there. -Yes. | 0:33:37 | 0:33:40
Sharon was always convinced the move would help her boys | 0:33:42 | 0:33:45
lead more active lifestyles | 0:33:45 | 0:33:47
and this was something that Justin couldn't argue with. | 0:33:47 | 0:33:50
Towards the end of our trip to New Zealand | 0:33:50 | 0:33:53
Jeremy, just all of a sudden, | 0:33:53 | 0:33:55
we were sitting on the plane on the way home in Auckland, | 0:33:55 | 0:33:58
and he said, "I've changed my mind, I want to stay in New Zealand." | 0:33:58 | 0:34:02
It does make it a lot easier that everybody seems to want to go | 0:34:02 | 0:34:05
and give New Zealand a go. | 0:34:05 | 0:34:07
I think that I've got to go for that, for the children. | 0:34:08 | 0:34:12
It's, you know, try and make their lives a little bit more successful | 0:34:12 | 0:34:15
and give them a better future than I could in the UK. | 0:34:15 | 0:34:19
With the clock ticking, there's been plenty to do, | 0:34:23 | 0:34:26
for one of the Coes, at least. | 0:34:26 | 0:34:28
To be fair, Sharon has done pretty much everything, | 0:34:28 | 0:34:31
packed up the house, moved out | 0:34:31 | 0:34:33
and I've been very reluctant. | 0:34:33 | 0:34:36
You know, it's um... | 0:34:36 | 0:34:38
I think if it was up to me, I would still be dragging my heels. | 0:34:39 | 0:34:43
So, it's like my life is being packed up for me, which is... | 0:34:44 | 0:34:47
I don't know if that is good or bad, I'll let you know. | 0:34:47 | 0:34:51
I've already packed up once to go to New Zealand | 0:34:52 | 0:34:54
and this is the second time around, so I've packed the boxes, | 0:34:54 | 0:34:57
unpacked them and repacked them now for the second time, | 0:34:57 | 0:35:01
so hopefully they won't be unpacked until they get to New Zealand now. | 0:35:01 | 0:35:04
However Sharon's decision to leave suffered a serious blow | 0:35:06 | 0:35:09
when her brother passed away suddenly. | 0:35:09 | 0:35:12
I think at the moment, leaving my mum behind is quite bad | 0:35:14 | 0:35:18
because of what's been happening in the last three months, | 0:35:18 | 0:35:22
because she gets very upset and very depressed | 0:35:22 | 0:35:24
because my brother's just passed, so she is already not in | 0:35:24 | 0:35:27
a very good state of mind and then with me leaving as well, | 0:35:27 | 0:35:31
it's like losing two children, rather than just one. | 0:35:31 | 0:35:34
It has sort of like split the decision, | 0:35:34 | 0:35:36
am I making the right decision to go? Because of my mum. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:40
But I think we have gone too far down the road to actually turn back | 0:35:40 | 0:35:44
at the moment. I think we have got to go and see what it's like. | 0:35:44 | 0:35:49
Her decision to move to the other side of the world | 0:35:50 | 0:35:52
was tested further when daughter Samantha decided | 0:35:52 | 0:35:55
she wouldn't be staying on in the long-term. | 0:35:55 | 0:35:58
She started a photography degree at Ipswich University, | 0:35:58 | 0:36:01
a course she plans to complete in the UK. | 0:36:01 | 0:36:05
Samantha is the only one that's undecided at the moment | 0:36:05 | 0:36:08
on when she's going to come to New Zealand. | 0:36:08 | 0:36:10
In the UK, she's got nine months to a year left on her degree. | 0:36:10 | 0:36:15
I'm going out to New Zealand for two months with my family | 0:36:16 | 0:36:19
and then I'm going to come back to finish the last year of my degree. | 0:36:19 | 0:36:22
I'm not sure if I'll go out there once I finish my degree, | 0:36:22 | 0:36:24
or stay here, it depends where I get work once I finished, | 0:36:24 | 0:36:27
or if I decide to do postgraduate. | 0:36:27 | 0:36:30
I'm very glad they've actually made a decision because I felt like | 0:36:30 | 0:36:33
I'm not really settled anywhere for the last few years because | 0:36:33 | 0:36:37
they're moving to New Zealand, they're not moving to New Zealand. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:40
And there are benefits in having | 0:36:40 | 0:36:41
a family on the other side of the world. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:44
It just gives me a lot of choice. | 0:36:44 | 0:36:45
I think so many people are so closed in once they finish their degree, | 0:36:45 | 0:36:49
I've got a lot of options. | 0:36:49 | 0:36:51
Samantha isn't the only one hitting the books. | 0:36:52 | 0:36:54
Justin's continued work shortage inspired him to study | 0:36:54 | 0:36:58
an accountancy course at Colchester Institute. | 0:36:58 | 0:37:01
Rather than sort of waste my time, | 0:37:01 | 0:37:03
I thought it was important that I had a professional qualification | 0:37:03 | 0:37:07
that I could take across to, | 0:37:07 | 0:37:09
not only construction industry, but also other industries as well. | 0:37:09 | 0:37:15
After years of struggling to find work in the UK, | 0:37:15 | 0:37:18
Justin can see the plus points in a move down under. | 0:37:18 | 0:37:21
If I found work out there that I enjoyed, | 0:37:21 | 0:37:24
it would be much easier to settle and carry on working, | 0:37:24 | 0:37:28
but the main thing I'm optimistic about is the fact that | 0:37:28 | 0:37:31
we can buy land out there to build a property. | 0:37:31 | 0:37:34
Now, that would be an amazing thing, if I could do that for my children, | 0:37:35 | 0:37:39
so when they start in life, | 0:37:39 | 0:37:40
you know, we can actually build a house to their own specifications. | 0:37:40 | 0:37:44
I think that would be a really positive thing to do. | 0:37:44 | 0:37:48
There's always light at the end of the tunnel, you know? | 0:37:48 | 0:37:50
But it's just whether it's a train coming the other way, or not! | 0:37:50 | 0:37:54
There's not many around this area. | 0:37:56 | 0:37:57
With Justin inspired by the thought of building a house, | 0:37:57 | 0:38:00
they still need a rental property in the meantime. | 0:38:00 | 0:38:03
Luckily help has been on hand. | 0:38:03 | 0:38:05
I haven't actually had a lot of time to look on the internet | 0:38:05 | 0:38:09
and research because I have been packing | 0:38:09 | 0:38:11
and trying to sort out all of this side of stuff. | 0:38:11 | 0:38:14
But my daughter is actually doing the research at the moment | 0:38:14 | 0:38:17
and showing us. | 0:38:17 | 0:38:19
She's looked and researched all the schools to find out | 0:38:19 | 0:38:22
the best schools for my son to go to and the colleges, | 0:38:22 | 0:38:25
she has done all of this for me | 0:38:25 | 0:38:27
so she has been a real big help and taken some of the pressure off. | 0:38:27 | 0:38:31
There's only a few days to go until the move. | 0:38:31 | 0:38:34
Samantha has found them a place to stay, | 0:38:34 | 0:38:37
but only for the first six weeks. | 0:38:37 | 0:38:39
We found a very nice rental property in Onslow. | 0:38:39 | 0:38:43
We could have booked it for longer, but we thought | 0:38:43 | 0:38:46
by then we'd want our own place and start buying stuff for ourselves. | 0:38:46 | 0:38:50
So, with the big day ever closer and emotions running high, | 0:38:50 | 0:38:53
do they finally agree on how they feel about the move? | 0:38:53 | 0:38:58
I'm feeling excited...nervous... | 0:38:58 | 0:39:02
all rolled into one. | 0:39:02 | 0:39:03
I feel sick to my stomach, honest to God. | 0:39:05 | 0:39:07
It's... | 0:39:07 | 0:39:09
It's a very... | 0:39:09 | 0:39:11
It's a very scary thing to do. | 0:39:12 | 0:39:14
I think once he gets settled and the children are settled, | 0:39:15 | 0:39:19
mainly if the children are settled, then he'll be settled in his life | 0:39:19 | 0:39:23
in New Zealand, but it's getting the children settled first. | 0:39:23 | 0:39:26
Surely Justin can see some positives about living in New Zealand? | 0:39:28 | 0:39:32
It's just having a comfortable living. | 0:39:34 | 0:39:38
A nice home. | 0:39:38 | 0:39:39
A nice home and also having the time to enjoy life. | 0:39:39 | 0:39:43
Whether it's simple things like going swimming or whatever. | 0:39:43 | 0:39:47
One of the things on Wellington Harbour is they've got | 0:39:47 | 0:39:50
a diving board, that's planked out in the summer. | 0:39:50 | 0:39:54
I'm looking forward to running off that diving board | 0:39:54 | 0:39:57
and splashing into the sea. And that don't cost you nothing. | 0:39:57 | 0:40:01
So, if that sort of sums up what life could be like, then, | 0:40:01 | 0:40:04
it could be fun. | 0:40:04 | 0:40:06
Justin and Sharon have faced many challenges in the past | 0:40:06 | 0:40:09
and are looking forward to the future together. | 0:40:09 | 0:40:12
This year will be our 25th wedding anniversary | 0:40:13 | 0:40:17
so we wouldn't have stayed together that long | 0:40:17 | 0:40:20
if this was the only decision. | 0:40:20 | 0:40:23
If times are hard, it's a strain on any relationship. | 0:40:23 | 0:40:27
So we just have to see, let's hope that times will be better for us. | 0:40:27 | 0:40:31
The big day has arrived. | 0:40:37 | 0:40:39
With bags packed and the family waiting to say their goodbyes, | 0:40:39 | 0:40:42
it all seems to be happening. | 0:40:42 | 0:40:44
Surely by now, Justin has come round to the idea. | 0:40:46 | 0:40:48
I think I'll stay here, it's less stress! | 0:40:48 | 0:40:51
But at least Sharon seems hopeful. | 0:40:53 | 0:40:55
I think that Justin will get on the plane and I think he will go. | 0:40:55 | 0:40:58
I think he has started looking for work and things like that | 0:40:58 | 0:41:02
so he is getting in the mood to go. | 0:41:02 | 0:41:05
I'll be very nervous at the airport | 0:41:05 | 0:41:07
but very, very excited because I'm so looking forward to going. | 0:41:07 | 0:41:11
All right? See you soon, all right? | 0:41:13 | 0:41:16
'What's going to go through my mind is what I'm leaving behind.' | 0:41:16 | 0:41:19
And, I think that on that journey to the airport | 0:41:19 | 0:41:22
will be all those things of what I'm leaving behind, | 0:41:22 | 0:41:26
but...yes. | 0:41:26 | 0:41:28
You've got to be a little bit positive, haven't you? | 0:41:28 | 0:41:31
And I'm just looking forward... | 0:41:31 | 0:41:34
I hope things work out well for Sharon | 0:41:34 | 0:41:36
and everything goes the way that she wants it. | 0:41:36 | 0:41:39
For me, I don't care what happens to me. | 0:41:39 | 0:41:42
You know, it's as long as they're all happy, | 0:41:42 | 0:41:46
that's the most important thing. | 0:41:46 | 0:41:48
So Justin has made it to the airport | 0:41:52 | 0:41:55
and appears more positive about what's in store. | 0:41:55 | 0:41:58
-He'll be OK. -It'll be all right. | 0:42:01 | 0:42:04
-I'm going to miss my home town and my family. -I'm very excited, | 0:42:04 | 0:42:08
I just want to get on my journey now cos I like travelling. | 0:42:08 | 0:42:11
It's the end of a chapter. | 0:42:12 | 0:42:14
You know, it may be the start of a new chapter. | 0:42:14 | 0:42:17
Even though Justin still has his doubts, | 0:42:21 | 0:42:24
the family know that it's time to look forward to a brighter future. | 0:42:24 | 0:42:28
With all five of them making it onto the plane at last, | 0:42:35 | 0:42:38
their adventure starts here. | 0:42:38 | 0:42:40
So, after years of false starts and sleepless nights, | 0:42:49 | 0:42:53
the Coe family are finally on their way to a new life down under. | 0:42:53 | 0:42:57
Whatever the future holds, we wish them the best of luck. | 0:42:57 | 0:43:00
