If you were desperate to spend more time with the people you love, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:06
would you consider going to the | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
other side of the world to achieve it? | 0:00:08 | 0:00:09
In 2013, John Woodland spent a week in Australia, hoping to | 0:00:09 | 0:00:14
persuade his wife and daughter to make it their permanent home. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:19
Today we'll find out if he succeeded. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
Years working away from home had taken a heavy | 0:00:22 | 0:00:25
toll on John Woodland's family life. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
I understood why he had to go away but it was just horrible. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:33
Desperate for more time with them, he hoped Australia was the answer. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:37
This is my dream, this is, love, to be home every single day | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
and spend time with you. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:42
But daughter Chloe was unsure about moving, | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
and wife Kerry wasn't willing to leave her behind. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
I don't physically feel that I could leave her in this country | 0:00:47 | 0:00:52
and move over with just me and John. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
So one year after the family's trial week, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
have they gone ahead and made the move? | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
My hopes for the future for all of us is that we're all happy. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
Australia offers the chance of an ideal | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
family life to more than 35,000 Brits who emigrate there each year. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:33
With its mild climate and beautiful beaches it's easy to see why. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:38
But, it doesn't work out for everyone - | 0:01:38 | 0:01:40
for many, the dream ends back where it started. | 0:01:40 | 0:01:44
Missing out on family life, | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
John Woodland was convinced a move down under would give him | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
the time he desperately needed with his wife and daughter. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:53
One year ago, he had a week to try and persuade them | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
a move to Australia was worth giving up their lives in the UK. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
Today we'll find out if the family have achieved the dream life | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
John was chasing. | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
A lengthy delay in London meant the Woodland's | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
trial week in 2013 started in Perth much later than scheduled, | 0:02:10 | 0:02:15
and the marathon journey of over 10,000 miles had taken its toll. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
Our flight was very, very long. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
It was very, very tiring. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
But everyone was still raring to go. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
Now we're here, you know, it's not just talking and maybe, | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
it's going to be making our mind up time. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
Just to see really what Australia's got to offer | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
and what my dad has been bragging about and if it is for me, really. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:42
I'm quite excited about the whole thing at the moment, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
so let the adventure begin, I say. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:47
Ahead was a week which could change their lives forever. | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
The Woodlands were from Gwent in South Wales. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
They were John, Kerry, and daughter Chloe, then 19. | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
Australia had been on John's mind | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
since an army posting 17 years previously. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
I thought, "What a beautiful country, so laid back, so relaxed." | 0:03:06 | 0:03:10
When John returned from Australia he was really excited about what | 0:03:10 | 0:03:14
he'd experienced out there, and for a long while after that he did say, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
you know, it's something that we | 0:03:17 | 0:03:18
should perhaps think about in the future. | 0:03:18 | 0:03:20
John had been an HGV driver in the army. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:23
On leaving the forces, a lack of jobs left him with no choice | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
but to continue with that career. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
But time spent on the road had meant long spells away from home. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:33
I've had sole responsibility for Chloe's... Bringing Chloe up, | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
for looking after the house, for doing everything, really, that | 0:03:37 | 0:03:42
normally a family would do together, I've done everything alone. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:45
And providing for his family meant he'd completely missed | 0:03:45 | 0:03:49
out on Chloe's childhood. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:50
Not being able to see him through the week, not, like, him | 0:03:53 | 0:03:57
being able to see me grow up and be who I am today, really. | 0:03:57 | 0:04:02
She's missed so much and I've missed so much not being with her. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:06
It was a painful situation, | 0:04:06 | 0:04:08
but John thought a move down under could be the answer. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
My perfect outcome in Australia would be to find a job where | 0:04:11 | 0:04:16
I am working 6 till 4 or 4 till 6, whatever hours it is, | 0:04:16 | 0:04:20
but being home every single day to spend more time with my family. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:23
John and Kerry both felt Australia | 0:04:25 | 0:04:27
could offer Chloe a much better future. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
I work in a chip shop. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
I go to college and I do nail technology. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:38
I would like her to experience more out of life than | 0:04:38 | 0:04:40
living in a small town and spending all her days here. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:43
It's the opportunities which she could have over there. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:46
But while Chloe could see some appeal in moving far | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
away from home, it would mean saying goodbye to her boyfriend. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:53
I've been with Sam for around a year now. Don't really want to lose him. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:59
And leaving Chloe wasn't an option for Kerry. | 0:04:59 | 0:05:02
If Chloe decided that she wouldn't want to | 0:05:02 | 0:05:05
live in Australia, I think that the whole idea, really, would just | 0:05:05 | 0:05:08
be forgotten because I don't physically feel that | 0:05:08 | 0:05:12
I could leave her in this country and move over with just me and John. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:16
I do feel a bit pressured in to going a bit. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:20
John had just one week to convince Chloe | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
and Kerry his dream of a better life down under was worth giving | 0:05:24 | 0:05:28
up their lives in the UK. | 0:05:28 | 0:05:29
The Woodlands were spending their trial week in Perth, | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
the country's fastest-growing major city. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:42
With less than 5% unemployment, it was a popular | 0:05:42 | 0:05:46
destination for new arrivals seeking a fresh start down under. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
It was late - and dark - | 0:05:52 | 0:05:54
when the family arrived at their temporary home. | 0:05:54 | 0:05:56
Hopefully it wouldn't disappoint. | 0:05:56 | 0:05:59
Quite big, isn't it? | 0:05:59 | 0:06:00
I like the open plan, I like the kitchen | 0:06:00 | 0:06:02
and the living area all together. | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
Quite a big telly, isn't it? | 0:06:04 | 0:06:05
Put the kettle on, love! | 0:06:05 | 0:06:07
John was settling in nicely but Chloe wasn't so keen. | 0:06:07 | 0:06:10
It's nice... | 0:06:10 | 0:06:11
I just don't think it's nothing compared | 0:06:11 | 0:06:13
-to what we've got back home. -No. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:15
It wasn't the start John was hoping for | 0:06:15 | 0:06:17
but what they could see outside did look more promising. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:21
-Oh, this is nice, John. -Is it? | 0:06:21 | 0:06:23
It's got a glass roof. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:24
-Massive out here. -I know. | 0:06:26 | 0:06:28
As everyone settled in, John knew he'd have to work hard | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
if he was to convince his wife and daughter to make the move. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
This could give us an opportunity of a lifetime | 0:06:35 | 0:06:39
but at the end of the day I won't force my wife | 0:06:39 | 0:06:42
and my daughter to do something they wouldn't want to do. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
The whole point of coming is to hopefully make | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
a decision that we all agree on, but obviously | 0:06:47 | 0:06:50
if that doesn't happen then we are back to the drawing board. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:53
Back in the UK, home for the Woodlands was a three-bedroom | 0:06:58 | 0:07:02
terraced house in Tredegar in Gwent, South Wales. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
The area's very pretty. | 0:07:04 | 0:07:06
We have a lot of countryside and mountains and I feel that if we | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
move to Australia we would probably like to live in one of the suburbs. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
We'd like that nice community feel that we have here in Tredegar. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:17
Just like meet people and get the old barbecue stuff | 0:07:17 | 0:07:20
and things like that, isn't it, really? | 0:07:20 | 0:07:22
I know that Chloe would love to have a pool | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
but I think the most important thing is that it's just a family home | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
and just somewhere that you're happy. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
The Woodlands planned to rent in Australia. | 0:07:31 | 0:07:33
We showed them three properties, based on what | 0:07:33 | 0:07:36
they could afford, their ideal home, and something in between. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:40
First up was a modern three bedroom house in the seaside | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
town of Trinity. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:44
35 minutes' drive north of Perth's city centre, | 0:07:44 | 0:07:46
it could have offered the family the community feel they were after. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
Oh, look at that. It's nice, isn't it? | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
-Wow. -Ours is lovely, Chloe. | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
This is really nice. This would be my room. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
-This would be your room. -Would it really? -Yeah. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
It was looking good. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:08
There you are, Chloe, this is your wardrobe. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:10
Oh, man. Look at that. | 0:08:10 | 0:08:13
Chloe's always wanted a walk-in wardrobe. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:16
And Kerry was loving the open-plan design. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
This is lovely. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
-This is really nice. -It is, isn't it? | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
I quite like all the glass. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:27
The room is really light and airy. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:30
It feels nice and sunny and bright. | 0:08:30 | 0:08:33
But the garden wasn't ideal. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:35
It's not a very big garden though, Kerry, is it? | 0:08:35 | 0:08:38
You've got the beach literally opposite. | 0:08:38 | 0:08:40
You have got the outside space | 0:08:40 | 0:08:41
so you wouldn't be just confined to your garden. | 0:08:41 | 0:08:43
Right, Chloe I think this one might be your room after all. | 0:08:43 | 0:08:47
Chloe seemed sold. | 0:08:47 | 0:08:48
I really like this house. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:50
I think it's a lot better than our house back home. | 0:08:50 | 0:08:53
It's plenty big enough for the three of us. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:56
With the day off to a positive start, | 0:08:56 | 0:08:58
John should have been pleased. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
But was this house within their £1,250 a month rental budget? | 0:09:00 | 0:09:05
-Shall we have a look? -Shall we? | 0:09:09 | 0:09:11
Go on, then, Chloe. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:12
£1,210 pounds a month. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:17
That's about what we planned on really, wasn't it? | 0:09:17 | 0:09:19
That's not too bad at all. That would be manageable, I think. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:22
If we could afford a house like this or we could get a house like this | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
on that sort of money, if we can get the jobs over here, then... | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
Brilliant, really pleased with that price. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:29
Won you over yet, Chloe? | 0:09:29 | 0:09:31
A little. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:32
Yes! | 0:09:33 | 0:09:34 | |
The next property was a stylish four-bedroom home. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:40
It was located in Tapping - 20 miles north of Perth | 0:09:40 | 0:09:43
but only five minutes from the amenities of the nearby | 0:09:43 | 0:09:46
town of Joondalup and close to the beach. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
Oh, this is lovely, isn't it? | 0:09:53 | 0:09:55
Oh, this is like a little study. | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
Should imagine it's a nice street where you get to | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
meet your neighbours. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:01
You know, everyone's quite close by. | 0:10:01 | 0:10:03
That could have meant the location was right | 0:10:03 | 0:10:05
and John spotted another potential upside. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
That's not going to be a walk-in wardrobe, is it?.. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:10
Go and have a look. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
Shock horror. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:15
Go on, then, that's nice | 0:10:15 | 0:10:17
That's lovely. It's huge, Chloe. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:19
That was one box ticked. | 0:10:19 | 0:10:21
And then you've got the en-suite. | 0:10:21 | 0:10:23
Oh, wow. This is lovely. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:26
-This is 'wow', isn't it? -Yeah. -Yeah. | 0:10:28 | 0:10:29
There's no other word for it, is there? | 0:10:29 | 0:10:31
You can't explain it, it's absolutely beautiful. | 0:10:31 | 0:10:34
The house had plenty going for it | 0:10:36 | 0:10:38
but there was one feature Kerry wasn't too keen on. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:41
The only thing I didn't like about | 0:10:41 | 0:10:43
this room is the pool table in the middle. | 0:10:43 | 0:10:45
Not an issue for John! | 0:10:45 | 0:10:46
-No, I think that's all right. -You like it. You don't mind it. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
-That can stay there, can't it, Chlo? -Yeah, we like that. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:52
It was all going well until Chloe spotted a problem. | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
This is small. | 0:10:55 | 0:10:57
Yeah, but it's nice, though, isn't it? It's big enough. | 0:10:57 | 0:10:59
Outside was one feature which could have brought her round. | 0:11:02 | 0:11:05
It's just luxury, isn't it, having a hot tub sat in the garden there. | 0:11:07 | 0:11:10
I like the garden but I just... | 0:11:10 | 0:11:14
-Don't get the right feel for it. -Don't like the house itself. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
I just don't think it's... | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
-Not for you? -Not for me, no. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:22
Even with a hot tub, this house wasn't wowing Chloe. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
But John and Kerry could see some appeal. | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
I think this house is lovely. I think it's got a lovely size. | 0:11:29 | 0:11:32
It's got plenty of bedrooms if people come to stay. | 0:11:32 | 0:11:35
It is a nice house. | 0:11:35 | 0:11:36
I wouldn't have any qualms with living here. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:38
But was it somewhere they could afford to call home? | 0:11:38 | 0:11:41
What do you reckon? | 0:11:44 | 0:11:46
Don't know, no idea. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:47
Cheaper than the last place or dearer? | 0:11:47 | 0:11:49
No, probably a lot more expensive. | 0:11:49 | 0:11:51
It was almost £200 a month over budget. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:54
But.... | 0:11:54 | 0:11:55
-Oh! -Not much dearer. | 0:11:55 | 0:11:57
I was expecting this to be hugely, if not double, the last one. | 0:11:57 | 0:12:01
It's a good price, isn't it? | 0:12:01 | 0:12:03
-But you still don't like the house? -I still don't like the house. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:06
With two properties down, the pressure was on to find | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
somewhere the whole family would move around the world for. | 0:12:09 | 0:12:12
The final viewing was also in the Tapping area. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
With four bedrooms, this house should have offered the space | 0:12:16 | 0:12:19
and comfort the family wanted. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:21
-That's a nice little garden, John. -It is, isn't it? | 0:12:23 | 0:12:25
Little bit of a driveway. | 0:12:25 | 0:12:26
Nice, John, isn't it? | 0:12:28 | 0:12:29
-This is lovely, isn't it? -I do like this, yeah. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
Decorated really nice, aren't they? | 0:12:34 | 0:12:36
Ah, it's nice and big. | 0:12:36 | 0:12:38
It looked promising | 0:12:38 | 0:12:39
and the bathroom was an improvement on the last property. | 0:12:39 | 0:12:42
Do you think this is bigger? | 0:12:42 | 0:12:44
-Yeah, a lot bigger. -Do you?! -Yeah. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:45
Oh, dear me. | 0:12:47 | 0:12:48
Oh, this is nice, isn't it? Lovely. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:50
Why have you always got walk-in wardrobes and I haven't got either. | 0:12:50 | 0:12:55
The master bedroom had another attractive feature. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:59
-We've got our own private porch. -That's private, yeah. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:01
Ah, that's really nice, yeah. | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
Kerry sitting down with her orange juice in the morning. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:07
But there was a slight problem. | 0:13:07 | 0:13:08
I might have to get rid of the plants | 0:13:08 | 0:13:10
or trim them back a little bit. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:12
-Cos you're scared of spiders. -Scared of spiders. | 0:13:12 | 0:13:14
What? A big Welshman like you John?! | 0:13:14 | 0:13:16
Oh, this is nice. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
This is huge. It's almost like two separate living areas, | 0:13:20 | 0:13:22
three separate living areas. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:24
-Look at the size of the kitchen. -The kitchen's absolutely massive. | 0:13:24 | 0:13:27
Outside was a feature which appealed to everyone. | 0:13:27 | 0:13:30
What's out there? | 0:13:30 | 0:13:32
HE LAUGHS | 0:13:32 | 0:13:33
Nice big fridge, oh, and a pool! | 0:13:33 | 0:13:34
This is nice, isn't it? This is lovely, isn't it? | 0:13:39 | 0:13:41
And, again, it's undercover which is perfect. | 0:13:41 | 0:13:43
You even got sides, John, that you can pull down. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
So had the Woodlands found their dream home? | 0:13:46 | 0:13:50
It's everything I would like if I moved to Australia. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:53
I actually haven't got anything negative to say about it. | 0:13:53 | 0:13:56
-Good girl. -No, I know. | 0:13:56 | 0:13:59
The house was a hit with the whole family. | 0:14:01 | 0:14:03
But was the price right? | 0:14:03 | 0:14:05
Do you reckon it will be more or less? | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
-Oh, definitely more. -Do you think so? | 0:14:08 | 0:14:09
I reckon it might be even. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:11
No, I think it's a lot more expensive. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:12
I don't think it's something you could afford at this point. | 0:14:12 | 0:14:15
-Are you ready? -Go on. | 0:14:15 | 0:14:16
That was more than £400 over budget. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
-Yeah, it's quite high. -£1,667. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:24
But Kerry was optimistic. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:26
Surprisingly, it's cheaper than I thought it would be. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:29
I did think it would be a lot more than that, definitely. | 0:14:29 | 0:14:33
I wouldn't want second best so I would work hard | 0:14:33 | 0:14:36
and then get something like this, I would. | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
So what had the Woodlands made of Perth properties? | 0:14:39 | 0:14:42
The first house had been within budget | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
but the size of the garden let it down. | 0:14:47 | 0:14:49
Property number two was somewhere Kerry and John could call home | 0:14:49 | 0:14:53
but Chloe hadn't been convinced. | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
And the final house had the wow factor | 0:14:56 | 0:14:59
but also a price tag to match. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:01
So had they seen enough to persuade them | 0:15:03 | 0:15:05
to give up their home in the UK? | 0:15:05 | 0:15:07
Based on the properties we've seen today we are voting for... | 0:15:07 | 0:15:11
-Australia. -Australia. -Australia. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:27
-Why did you vote for it? -So why did you vote Australia? | 0:15:27 | 0:15:29
Because I think the houses over here | 0:15:29 | 0:15:31
-are a lot better than the ones in the UK. -I'm the same. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:33
I don't think you can deny the fact that the houses are lovely. | 0:15:33 | 0:15:36
-And then seeing house three, that just nailed it for me. -Yeah. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:40
-Yeah. -Australia. | 0:15:40 | 0:15:41
Absolutely - well done, girl! | 0:15:41 | 0:15:42
It was a perfect start for John. | 0:15:42 | 0:15:45
With Kerry and Chloe both choosing Australia, | 0:15:45 | 0:15:47
his dream had taken a step forward. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:50
If the family were to make the move, it was crucial John | 0:15:57 | 0:16:00
and Kerry found the jobs to fund it. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
Kerry was the main visa applicant. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:04
Back in the UK she was an experienced midwife. | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
I've been a midwife for seven years. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:12
I've enjoyed the job even though it can be very, very stressful | 0:16:12 | 0:16:15
and demanding, | 0:16:15 | 0:16:17
and I do feel that going to a new trust in a new area, | 0:16:17 | 0:16:21
a new country would be quite daunting. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:23
We arranged for Kerry to spend some time at Joondalup Health Campus - | 0:16:25 | 0:16:29
a local private hospital with a brand-new maternity wing. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:32
I'm a little bit nervous about this today, just going into, sort of, | 0:16:32 | 0:16:35
an environment that I'm not familiar with but also excited | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
to find out what the possibilities could be for me in the future. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:42
It was John's job in the UK that had driven him towards emigrating. | 0:16:42 | 0:16:46
My cab is my apartment for the week. | 0:16:46 | 0:16:48
It's where I live all week. I sleep there. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:51
I've been doing it for eight years. | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53
I'm gone on a Monday, coming home on a Friday. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:56
He was hoping working in Australia would give him the time | 0:16:56 | 0:17:00
with his family he so desperately wanted. | 0:17:00 | 0:17:02
To find out about his work options, he met Dean Hewitt, | 0:17:04 | 0:17:07
a driving recruitment expert who was also from the UK. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:11
The licence you have is fully transferable into Australia. | 0:17:11 | 0:17:16
-So is there much opportunities for me, then, is there? -Absolutely. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:19
It can take maybe a week or two and once you've got your driving | 0:17:19 | 0:17:23
licence, you should be ready to be in full-time employment. | 0:17:23 | 0:17:27
It seemed opportunities could exist | 0:17:27 | 0:17:29
but what about the hours and salary? | 0:17:29 | 0:17:32
You would be home of an evening | 0:17:33 | 0:17:36
and we work with you closely to advance your skills. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:39
You could be expecting to earn | 0:17:39 | 0:17:42
between 80,000 and 100,000 per year. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:46
80,000 to 100,000 per year?! | 0:17:46 | 0:17:48
80,000 to 100,000 working an average of a 50-hour week, | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
Monday to Friday. | 0:17:51 | 0:17:52
Phew - I'm well happy with that. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:55
That was a potential 50% increase in salary with | 0:17:55 | 0:17:58
regular hours. | 0:17:58 | 0:18:00
Back at the hospital, Kerry was keen to find out from unit manager | 0:18:00 | 0:18:03
Sandy if her prospects were as promising. | 0:18:03 | 0:18:06
Job prospects for you, absolutely fabulous, and reviewing your CV | 0:18:10 | 0:18:14
and what you could bring to the table, absolutely wonderful again. | 0:18:14 | 0:18:18
Great to have you on a team. | 0:18:18 | 0:18:19
What type of salary would I be looking at earning? | 0:18:19 | 0:18:22
OK, for the level of years of experience, starting salary, | 0:18:22 | 0:18:25
base salary, would be about 73,000. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:28
That's really, really good. | 0:18:28 | 0:18:30
That was about £20,000 more than Kerry earned at home. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
When John and Kerry met up to compare notes | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
they came to a staggering realisation. | 0:18:38 | 0:18:41
So between us we could possibly earn £40,000 a year more. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:45
40 yeah - 40 grand a year more. | 0:18:45 | 0:18:48
Hmm, what do you say to that? | 0:18:49 | 0:18:52
You can't say nothing to that, can you? | 0:18:52 | 0:18:54
It's shocking, isn't it? | 0:18:54 | 0:18:55
I wasn't expecting as much as that, I've got to be honest. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:58
So how did they vote on working in Perth? | 0:18:58 | 0:19:00
Based on our works experience we are voting for... | 0:19:00 | 0:19:03
BOTH: Australia. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:18
-This is my dream, this is, love. -Yeah. | 0:19:18 | 0:19:20
To work normal day shifts, like, I'd be home every single day to | 0:19:20 | 0:19:24
spend time with you. | 0:19:24 | 0:19:26
John was on cloud nine. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:27
With a better result than he could ever have hoped for, | 0:19:27 | 0:19:30
his dream was potentially on track. | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32
-I'm well happy, I am! -Brilliant. -Yep. Brilliant. | 0:19:34 | 0:19:37
Life in Australia was starting to look promising for the Woodlands, | 0:19:43 | 0:19:47
but John still had to get Chloe on board. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:50
To sample Australia's lifestyle opportunities, | 0:19:50 | 0:19:53
the family visited Perth's iconic Cottesloe Beach. | 0:19:53 | 0:19:56
It was a rare day out together. | 0:19:56 | 0:19:58
Watching Kerry and Chloe both enjoying | 0:20:07 | 0:20:09
themselves on their bikes, I haven't seen it before cos, like I say, | 0:20:09 | 0:20:13
I work away a lot back home and family time together is quite | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
limited but to watch them today, yeah, has been very entertaining. | 0:20:17 | 0:20:22
Seeing Mum and Dad together was having a positive effect on Chloe. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:26
They never get time to go out and do stuff like this back in the UK | 0:20:28 | 0:20:31
so I think the move out here would make them a lot more happy | 0:20:31 | 0:20:35
and a lot more like they're back in love together rather than | 0:20:35 | 0:20:39
being separated all the time. | 0:20:39 | 0:20:41
A local pub gave the family the chance to consider what | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
Australia could offer. | 0:20:46 | 0:20:48
To do something like this every weekend, that would be nice, | 0:20:48 | 0:20:52
especially spend a lot more time with yourself. | 0:20:52 | 0:20:54
It does make you realise, doesn't it, what else there could be to life | 0:20:54 | 0:20:57
rather than just, sort of, work and the house and TV. | 0:20:57 | 0:21:01
John was pleased with how the day seemed to have affected Chloe. | 0:21:01 | 0:21:05
The more she has the time over here, the more that she realises | 0:21:05 | 0:21:08
that Australia could offer a lot more than | 0:21:08 | 0:21:10
what were we live does and I think she's coming round to the idea. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:13
At the beginning of the week I was quite scared just | 0:21:13 | 0:21:16
because I didn't know what there was to do but today have given me... | 0:21:16 | 0:21:21
Well, opened my eyes, really. | 0:21:21 | 0:21:23
-Cheers for a good day. -Cheers. -Cheers. | 0:21:23 | 0:21:26
But time out had also made Kerry realise just how big | 0:21:26 | 0:21:29
a decision the family were facing. | 0:21:29 | 0:21:32
It's just a shame that if we did move over | 0:21:32 | 0:21:34
here it would be just the three of us. | 0:21:34 | 0:21:36
It wouldn't be that you'd have your family there or the people | 0:21:36 | 0:21:38
that you would normally spend days with. | 0:21:38 | 0:21:40
Mm, yeah, true enough. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:43
Based on lifestyle, though, did the family choose Australia or the UK? | 0:21:43 | 0:21:47
Based on our lifestyle activity today, we are voting for... | 0:21:47 | 0:21:51
-Australia. -Australia. -Australia. | 0:21:57 | 0:22:00
I enjoyed today. I think it was lovely to spend, you know, | 0:22:00 | 0:22:02
time doing something different, enjoying the weather | 0:22:02 | 0:22:04
and enjoying each other's company. | 0:22:04 | 0:22:06
I enjoyed watching you enjoy yourself, I did, | 0:22:06 | 0:22:08
-watching you on the bicycle. -Aw! | 0:22:08 | 0:22:09
A full house for the Aussie lifestyle had taken John | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
another step closer to his dream | 0:22:17 | 0:22:19
but he needed to know if the family could afford to live down under. | 0:22:19 | 0:22:23
The Woodlands hoped to rent out their UK home for £400 a month | 0:22:26 | 0:22:30
to help with expenses, | 0:22:30 | 0:22:32
but did two local estate agents agree with that valuation? | 0:22:32 | 0:22:37
Seems so weird, doesn't it? | 0:22:37 | 0:22:39
It's clear to me the property is very well presented. | 0:22:39 | 0:22:41
It's tastefully decorated through the lounge and dining area. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:44
Yeah, it's a nice cosy dining area leading through into the kitchen. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:50
Nice patio doors through to outside. Very good. Very good. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:53
This kitchen is a very good size again. | 0:22:53 | 0:22:56
They've done a nice finish in the high gloss units which we see. | 0:22:56 | 0:22:59
This really is a fantastically sized bedroom with the fitted | 0:22:59 | 0:23:02
wardrobes at the end is obviously an added incentive to the room as well. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:06
In the current market conditions this house should | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
sell for in the region of £75,000. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
For a quick sale I'd expect £67,500. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:13
However, if they were prepared to put it on the rental market | 0:23:13 | 0:23:16
I'd expect to achieve about £425 per calendar month. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
In the current market conditions | 0:23:19 | 0:23:21
I would value this property at £75,000. | 0:23:21 | 0:23:23
For a quick sale I would value it at £69,950 and for the rental market | 0:23:23 | 0:23:28
I would hope to achieve in the region of £450 per calendar month. | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
-Even better. -Happy with that? | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
It was a good result but what about the cost of living in Perth? | 0:23:34 | 0:23:38
The couple compared their finances at home with those in Australia, | 0:23:38 | 0:23:42
starting with the weekly food shop. | 0:23:42 | 0:23:44
OK, let's have a little look. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:49
Potatoes - £8.40! | 0:23:49 | 0:23:51
£8.40 compared to £3 in the UK for a 5kg bag. | 0:23:51 | 0:23:56
That's really expensive. | 0:23:56 | 0:23:58
Everything just seems to be a lot more here in Australia. | 0:23:58 | 0:24:01
£49.32 a week. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:05
-Worse off? -Worse off. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:08
And that was just the food bill. Next up were the bigger costs | 0:24:08 | 0:24:12
such as rent down under. | 0:24:12 | 0:24:14
Back in the UK the couple's mortgage cost £200 a month. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:18
The rental here would be £1,667 | 0:24:18 | 0:24:22
-but, again, that would be on the nicer house. -Yeah. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
It would cost almost £1,500 more a month to rent in Perth | 0:24:26 | 0:24:30
but with an increase of £40,000 in earnings down under, | 0:24:30 | 0:24:34
was Kerry in for a pleasant surprise? | 0:24:34 | 0:24:36
-So £921 pounds... -A month. | 0:24:39 | 0:24:43
Better off in Australia. | 0:24:43 | 0:24:44
And that's the most expensive. | 0:24:44 | 0:24:46
And that's with the most expensive house. | 0:24:46 | 0:24:48
-Shocking. -Bit of a result there, isn't it? | 0:24:49 | 0:24:51
Yeah, it's brilliant. | 0:24:51 | 0:24:53
And the all-important bottom line? | 0:24:53 | 0:24:55
BOTH: £11,052 a year... | 0:24:55 | 0:24:58
better off. | 0:24:58 | 0:24:59
HE CHUCKLES | 0:24:59 | 0:25:00
-That's good, that is. -There you go. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:05
It was possibly the easiest decision of the week for the Woodlands. | 0:25:07 | 0:25:11
Based on our cost of living, we are voting for... | 0:25:11 | 0:25:14
BOTH: Australia. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:24
And we would be silly not to because the figures speak for themselves. | 0:25:25 | 0:25:29
Being home every day as well, which is a bonus, and nice house. | 0:25:29 | 0:25:33
Australia could have meant more time together for the Woodlands | 0:25:43 | 0:25:47
but with John's dream within touching distance, | 0:25:47 | 0:25:49
the family had yet to face their biggest hurdle. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:53
As they sat down to watch a DVD of messages from home, | 0:25:53 | 0:25:56
would the reality of leaving loved ones behind prove too much to | 0:25:56 | 0:25:59
bear for Chloe and Kerry? | 0:25:59 | 0:26:02
Hiya, John. Hiya, Kerry. Hiya, Chloe. | 0:26:03 | 0:26:06
All right, Chloe, Kerry and John, missing you loads. | 0:26:06 | 0:26:10
My relationship with Kerry is we are best friends, | 0:26:10 | 0:26:12
we can tell each other anything. | 0:26:12 | 0:26:15
Soul of the party, really, John. Yeah. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:18
-He's not just a cousin, he's also our friend as well. -Yeah. | 0:26:18 | 0:26:21
I love being in a relationship with Chloe. | 0:26:21 | 0:26:23
She makes me feel really happy. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:25
She's really fun to be with, we always have a laugh. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:29
You don't really expect your children to up | 0:26:29 | 0:26:32
and go to the other side of the world | 0:26:32 | 0:26:34
but at the same point | 0:26:34 | 0:26:38
I'm happy for her, for the three of them. | 0:26:38 | 0:26:41
Aw, poor Nan. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:42
If Chloe moved to Australia, I would miss her loads. | 0:26:44 | 0:26:48
I'd be thinking about her all the time, really. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:51
I'd be gutted. | 0:26:53 | 0:26:54
I think over the last few years we've just got a really close | 0:26:54 | 0:26:58
bond and I would miss her. | 0:26:58 | 0:26:59
Sorry. | 0:27:02 | 0:27:03
Whatever decision you make, it will be the right one | 0:27:05 | 0:27:07
and we will miss you lots. | 0:27:07 | 0:27:10
This is an opportunity of a lifetime, you have to take it. | 0:27:10 | 0:27:14
Grasp it with both hands and enjoy it. | 0:27:14 | 0:27:16
Bye. | 0:27:16 | 0:27:17 | |
I hope you don't want to be without me but you've got to do | 0:27:19 | 0:27:22
what makes you happy. | 0:27:22 | 0:27:24
I love you loads and I'll see you soon. | 0:27:25 | 0:27:28
Make your decision. | 0:27:28 | 0:27:30
Either stay or come back to us. | 0:27:31 | 0:27:33
Love you lots, Mam. | 0:27:33 | 0:27:36
It makes you realise, doesn't it, everybody that you're going | 0:27:36 | 0:27:39
to be leaving behind and, you know, how much they're going to | 0:27:39 | 0:27:42
miss you, not just how much you're going to miss them. | 0:27:42 | 0:27:44
Leaving loved ones had always been Chloe and Kerry's biggest concern. | 0:27:51 | 0:27:55
It was now time for some serious thinking. Would they decide | 0:27:55 | 0:27:58
a new life down under was worth sacrificing what they had at home? | 0:27:58 | 0:28:02
To leave all you've got to leave back home, | 0:28:02 | 0:28:06
with the normality of life back home what you're used to | 0:28:06 | 0:28:08
and all that, would be a big choice and decision for us to make | 0:28:08 | 0:28:12
but I believe that we could make it over here. | 0:28:12 | 0:28:15
I've seen my mum and dad's relationship become a lot | 0:28:15 | 0:28:19
more closer. They seem to be a lot more, as you'd say, loved up. | 0:28:19 | 0:28:23
It's been lovely having John home every day, or being with us | 0:28:23 | 0:28:26
every day and doing...just doing things together as a family. | 0:28:26 | 0:28:30
If we decide to stay or go I think the biggest thing is that | 0:28:30 | 0:28:33
I'd like to spend more time with my wife and my daughter. | 0:28:33 | 0:28:35
I do dream of walking with my wife whether it be on a beach or just | 0:28:35 | 0:28:41
in a park but just spending time and doing just normal things with Kerry. | 0:28:41 | 0:28:47
The week had been John's last chance to achieve the family life | 0:28:47 | 0:28:50
he'd been dreaming of for years. | 0:28:50 | 0:28:52
So when it came to the crucial vote, what did the Woodlands decide? | 0:28:52 | 0:28:57
After an amazing week in Australia the country that we chose to | 0:28:57 | 0:29:00
live in is... | 0:29:00 | 0:29:01
-Australia. -Undecided. | 0:29:10 | 0:29:11
-Australia. I knew you'd choose that. -Did you? | 0:29:11 | 0:29:13
I just feel I need a little bit more time to | 0:29:15 | 0:29:17
sort of get my own thoughts together and have a good think about it. | 0:29:17 | 0:29:20
No, I understand that Kerry. | 0:29:20 | 0:29:22
I mean, is it the thought of leaving family and friends behind | 0:29:22 | 0:29:25
which has swayed you to be undecided? | 0:29:25 | 0:29:27
I think that's one of the main reasons | 0:29:27 | 0:29:29
and I also think it's fear of, you know, you're leaving | 0:29:29 | 0:29:32
-everything that you're familiar with back home. -OK. | 0:29:32 | 0:29:35
How about you, Chloe, why have you chosen Australia? | 0:29:35 | 0:29:37
Because I just think it's going to be a better lifestyle altogether. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:41
Well, I thought you'd be the one being undecided, not your mum. | 0:29:41 | 0:29:44
I can see all the points that you've made. | 0:29:44 | 0:29:46
They're all valid points. | 0:29:46 | 0:29:48
I just think it just needs a little bit more deciding for me. | 0:29:48 | 0:29:52
It had been a week to remember for the Woodlands. | 0:30:01 | 0:30:05
Although Chloe had finally come round to her dad's idea of a future | 0:30:05 | 0:30:09
together in Australia, Kerry just wasn't 100% on board. | 0:30:09 | 0:30:15
It looked like John's dream of a fresh start was on hold. | 0:30:15 | 0:30:19
So, a year after we last saw them, | 0:30:19 | 0:30:21
is it still Wales the Woodlands call home? | 0:30:21 | 0:30:23
It's 2014 and 12 months on, John and Kerry are now living in... | 0:30:25 | 0:30:31
Perth, Western Australia! | 0:30:31 | 0:30:33
Despite being undecided about a move after their trial week, | 0:30:33 | 0:30:37
on their return to Wales Kerry had a change of heart. | 0:30:37 | 0:30:40
Even though I could have taken or left the move, I think that it was | 0:30:40 | 0:30:43
something John and Chloe wanted to do and I didn't | 0:30:43 | 0:30:47
want to be the one person that stopped them fulfilling their | 0:30:47 | 0:30:52
futures and their dreams. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:53
When Kerry said yes to coming over here, it made me happy | 0:30:53 | 0:30:58
because our life in the UK wasn't exactly perfect with me being | 0:30:58 | 0:31:02
away all the time. | 0:31:02 | 0:31:03
We just got to the point, didn't we, that we just sort of said, | 0:31:03 | 0:31:06
"If we're going to do it then we just need to do it," | 0:31:06 | 0:31:08
and we literally said that | 0:31:08 | 0:31:10
and booked the flights the following day! | 0:31:10 | 0:31:12
The couple arranged their flights to coincide with John's birthday. | 0:31:12 | 0:31:16
By finally agreeing to the move, Kerry had given him | 0:31:16 | 0:31:19
the ultimate present. | 0:31:19 | 0:31:21
And she was quick to secure work. | 0:31:21 | 0:31:23
I did contact a few hospitals in Perth. | 0:31:24 | 0:31:28
I was really fortunate that I secured employment. | 0:31:28 | 0:31:31
Knowing that I had a job to come to did take some of the pressure off us | 0:31:31 | 0:31:35
cos we knew that we would have some income coming in. | 0:31:35 | 0:31:38
After a final Christmas in the UK, John's birthday arrived and the | 0:31:38 | 0:31:42
couple flew to Perth in January 2014... | 0:31:42 | 0:31:46
But Chloe wasn't on board. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:48
I thought me and Kerry would come over | 0:31:48 | 0:31:50
and set things up for when Chloe decides | 0:31:50 | 0:31:52
to come and its all set up for her, then. | 0:31:52 | 0:31:54
I think Chloe agreed she didn't want to be in a situation where we were | 0:31:54 | 0:31:58
all cooped up in a holiday let with the stress of looking for somewhere | 0:31:58 | 0:32:02
to live and John looking for work. | 0:32:02 | 0:32:03
Just come over when everything was sorted and settled. | 0:32:03 | 0:32:06
Leaving their only child behind wasn't easy for the couple and | 0:32:07 | 0:32:11
although only temporary, Kerry had concerns. | 0:32:11 | 0:32:14
It was horrible knowing you were leaving her because you | 0:32:14 | 0:32:17
knew you weren't going to see her for a month. | 0:32:17 | 0:32:19
Being separated from my mum and dad was tough | 0:32:19 | 0:32:22
but it was also nice, the fact that I could spend some more time | 0:32:22 | 0:32:25
with my nan and the rest of the family. | 0:32:25 | 0:32:27
The biggest fear was that we would be here and she would suddenly | 0:32:27 | 0:32:30
ring me and say "I'm not coming." | 0:32:30 | 0:32:32
Chloe didn't have a change of heart though - | 0:32:32 | 0:32:36
a month after her parents made the move, she finally joined them. | 0:32:36 | 0:32:40
We were wondering, would she change her mind at the last | 0:32:40 | 0:32:43
minute and not arrive? | 0:32:43 | 0:32:45
So it was almost like a big relief on the day that she | 0:32:45 | 0:32:47
flew in to Perth because you knew that she was here. | 0:32:47 | 0:32:50
When I was reunited with my mam and dad it was a really, really | 0:32:50 | 0:32:53
good moment after not being with them for a month and then having | 0:32:53 | 0:32:56
to come out to a brand-new country, brand-new house. It was really nice. | 0:32:56 | 0:33:00
Picked her up in the airport I had tears in my eyes. | 0:33:00 | 0:33:04
I hadn't been away from my daughter for that length of time before. | 0:33:04 | 0:33:07
It was a big weight off our shoulders and we'd missed her | 0:33:07 | 0:33:10
just happy to be a family again and have us all under one roof. | 0:33:10 | 0:33:14
And Chloe hadn't made the journey alone. | 0:33:14 | 0:33:17
I was upset about the thought of leaving Sam in the UK. | 0:33:17 | 0:33:21
When Sam said that he was willing to come over to Australia with me | 0:33:21 | 0:33:25
I was shocked at the fact he was willing to leave | 0:33:25 | 0:33:27
all his family, his friends to come and make a new life with me | 0:33:27 | 0:33:30
and my family. | 0:33:30 | 0:33:31
I wouldn't have liked to leave her coming over here | 0:33:31 | 0:33:34
and I would have been on my own in the UK. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:36
I wouldn't live in the UK without Chloe, no. | 0:33:36 | 0:33:39
But I was also relieved as well, the fact that I didn't have to worry | 0:33:39 | 0:33:42
about having to leave it there | 0:33:42 | 0:33:44
so that took a lot of stress off myself to actually be able to move. | 0:33:44 | 0:33:49
One last arrival made the family complete. | 0:33:49 | 0:33:52
Come on, then. Come on. Have your dinner. Good boy. | 0:33:52 | 0:33:56
It was the big count down then. | 0:33:56 | 0:33:58
He was the last member of our family | 0:33:58 | 0:34:00
that we needed to be a complete unit. | 0:34:00 | 0:34:03
The family dog, Sid, | 0:34:03 | 0:34:04
made his appearance in Perth soon after Chloe and Sam. | 0:34:04 | 0:34:08
He's settle down quite well. He loves the beach. | 0:34:08 | 0:34:11
He really does love the beach! | 0:34:11 | 0:34:13
With the dog arriving, my daughter arriving, | 0:34:16 | 0:34:19
we just felt like a family unit again. | 0:34:19 | 0:34:21
With the whole family reunited in Australia, | 0:34:22 | 0:34:25
it was time to start their new lives together | 0:34:25 | 0:34:28
in the rental property John and Kerry had found | 0:34:28 | 0:34:30
south of Perth in the suburb of Port Kennedy. | 0:34:30 | 0:34:33
We come in here and we just seen the pool and thought, | 0:34:35 | 0:34:37
"Yeah, it's a pool, man. Happy days!" | 0:34:37 | 0:34:40
It just ticked all the boxes, really. | 0:34:40 | 0:34:42
It was like, "We want this house." | 0:34:42 | 0:34:44
This is our master bedroom at the front of the house | 0:34:44 | 0:34:48
here in Australia. | 0:34:48 | 0:34:50
We have two walk-in wardrobes, one on either side | 0:34:50 | 0:34:54
and it's really useful then just having the en-suite. | 0:34:54 | 0:34:58
This is our main living area. | 0:34:58 | 0:35:01
You've got all your dining area, living area | 0:35:01 | 0:35:04
and kitchen all in one space. | 0:35:04 | 0:35:07
And now we have the main entertaining area where we spend | 0:35:08 | 0:35:11
most of our time in the summer months. | 0:35:11 | 0:35:14
Managed to pick up a nice cheap little pool table. | 0:35:14 | 0:35:18
This is our favourite part of the house, this is our swimming pool. | 0:35:18 | 0:35:21
When you're working and it's been nice and hot, coming home | 0:35:21 | 0:35:24
and it's still warm at 8pm or 9pm, you just dive in. | 0:35:24 | 0:35:28
It's just brilliant. | 0:35:28 | 0:35:30
A home in Port Kennedy is convenient for Kerry's job | 0:35:30 | 0:35:33
but it's not the perfect area. | 0:35:33 | 0:35:36
Living in Port Kennedy is not the ideal, it wasn't really where we | 0:35:36 | 0:35:39
wanted to be. We had planned to be in the Northern Suburbs. | 0:35:39 | 0:35:44
That's where we know people, that's where our social network is. | 0:35:44 | 0:35:49
Port Kennedy doesn't have a community feel. | 0:35:49 | 0:35:52
There's not much really to do. | 0:35:52 | 0:35:53
Kerry started work as a midwife in a hospital three weeks after arriving | 0:35:58 | 0:36:02
but the transition to work wasn't easy. | 0:36:02 | 0:36:05
Even though the job itself is the same, the private system works | 0:36:05 | 0:36:09
differently to the NHS. | 0:36:09 | 0:36:11
Things have taken a lot of adjustment and in some ways | 0:36:11 | 0:36:14
have knocked my confidence in the job | 0:36:14 | 0:36:17
because where in the UK I felt exactly I knew what I was doing, | 0:36:17 | 0:36:20
here I felt as though I was learning again from the start. | 0:36:20 | 0:36:23
Although Kerry's taking time to adapt to her new role, | 0:36:23 | 0:36:27
John's not looking back when it comes to his new job. | 0:36:27 | 0:36:30
After gaining his Australian HGV licence, he's now | 0:36:30 | 0:36:34
back in the driving seat and making the most of his new working pattern. | 0:36:34 | 0:36:38
I'm happy where I am because I'm doing the same line of work | 0:36:38 | 0:36:42
as I was doing in the UK on the car transporters. | 0:36:42 | 0:36:44
I enjoy it and it's local work. | 0:36:44 | 0:36:46
I'm home every day, no weekend work as of yet. | 0:36:46 | 0:36:50
I come to Australia for spending more time at home with my family | 0:36:50 | 0:36:55
and the job I'm doing now enables me to do that. | 0:36:55 | 0:36:58
John now has much more time with the family. | 0:36:58 | 0:37:02
It's a world away from his life in the UK | 0:37:02 | 0:37:04
when days spent on the road meant he was hardly ever at home. | 0:37:04 | 0:37:07
You don't realise what you've missed until it's too late and I know I've | 0:37:09 | 0:37:13
missed a lot of my daughter's growing up years | 0:37:13 | 0:37:16
but I'm glad she's over here and glad I'm spending more time with her. | 0:37:16 | 0:37:19
It's nice, it's what families should be. | 0:37:19 | 0:37:23
It's quite nice to see that they're connecting again. | 0:37:23 | 0:37:25
You can see them having quality time. | 0:37:25 | 0:37:27
And it's not only father-daughter time that's improved down under - | 0:37:27 | 0:37:32
having his evenings and weekends free also means John can spend | 0:37:32 | 0:37:36
quality time with his wife. | 0:37:36 | 0:37:37
In the UK we lived almost separate lives, really, haven't we? | 0:37:39 | 0:37:41
I was at home you worked away. | 0:37:41 | 0:37:44
I think that spending more time together here in Australia | 0:37:44 | 0:37:48
definitely made us a little bit closer. | 0:37:48 | 0:37:50
We do lots more different things, even if it's just going to the beach | 0:37:50 | 0:37:53
or going to the local pub or even | 0:37:53 | 0:37:55
just sitting in the garden and chatting. | 0:37:55 | 0:37:57
Seeing my mam and dad really happy is such a nice thing to see just | 0:37:57 | 0:38:02
because of the way they were back in the UK and how things have changed. | 0:38:02 | 0:38:07
It's really, really lovely to see. | 0:38:07 | 0:38:10
The Australian lifestyle's also agreeing with another loved-up | 0:38:10 | 0:38:14
couple making the most of their new life together down under. | 0:38:14 | 0:38:17
Me and Sam, when we've got spare time we usually go down the beach, | 0:38:17 | 0:38:21
we usually go out to the local pub | 0:38:21 | 0:38:24
or maybe go to the city and stuff like that. | 0:38:24 | 0:38:27
Yeah, I think we've got more of a better social life in Australia | 0:38:27 | 0:38:30
than we did back in the UK. | 0:38:30 | 0:38:32
Both Chloe and Sam have found jobs | 0:38:32 | 0:38:34
which are helping to ease the transition. | 0:38:34 | 0:38:36
Chloe's working in telecommunications | 0:38:36 | 0:38:38
while Sam's a carpet salesman. | 0:38:38 | 0:38:41
I am really, really enjoying my new job working with nice people, | 0:38:41 | 0:38:45
working with people my own age so I know that I can go out with them. | 0:38:45 | 0:38:50
Sam has settled in, I think, quite good | 0:38:50 | 0:38:52
considering he got no family over here as such. | 0:38:52 | 0:38:56
With my job I drive around and see lots of different | 0:38:56 | 0:38:58
places of Western Australia. | 0:38:58 | 0:39:00
There's definitely better opportunities out here for me | 0:39:00 | 0:39:02
rather than back home. | 0:39:02 | 0:39:04
Chloe did have an initial bout of homesickness when she arrived, | 0:39:04 | 0:39:08
but having Sam around has helped her find her feet down under. | 0:39:08 | 0:39:11
When it was the first few weeks of being in Australia | 0:39:11 | 0:39:14
I found it really hard but then after them few weeks pass | 0:39:14 | 0:39:17
and you've started to settle in, you've started to get a job, | 0:39:17 | 0:39:20
you've started to meet new people, it went a lot easier. | 0:39:20 | 0:39:23
Obviously with Sam being here, | 0:39:23 | 0:39:25
it's helped my daughter settle down a lot quicker. | 0:39:25 | 0:39:28
I think Chloe's adapting quite quickly to being in Australia. | 0:39:28 | 0:39:31
She feels a lot better about it now than when we first got here. | 0:39:31 | 0:39:36
When Chloe's having one of her bad days I do try and help her through. | 0:39:36 | 0:39:39
While Chloe and Sam are now settling in to an Australian routine, | 0:39:39 | 0:39:43
Kerry does sometimes struggle being so far from loved ones at home. | 0:39:43 | 0:39:47
The worst thing for me... | 0:39:47 | 0:39:49
Um... | 0:39:49 | 0:39:51 | |
-See? -I know. | 0:39:51 | 0:39:54
That's the only problem being the other side of the world | 0:39:57 | 0:40:00
is your friends and your family | 0:40:00 | 0:40:02
which, obviously, my wife still misses. | 0:40:02 | 0:40:04
You're saying goodbye to the people you care about | 0:40:06 | 0:40:09
and you don't really know when you're going to see them again. | 0:40:09 | 0:40:12
-And I think that's the worst bit, isn't it? -Yeah. | 0:40:12 | 0:40:15
And that means, although it's still early days, | 0:40:15 | 0:40:18
she's not 100% convinced the move to the other side of the | 0:40:18 | 0:40:21
world's a permanent one. | 0:40:21 | 0:40:22
I'm not sure I definitely want to be in Australia. | 0:40:22 | 0:40:25
I could probably quite easily go home at the minute, | 0:40:25 | 0:40:30
but I know that realistically I've not given it a fair chance. | 0:40:30 | 0:40:33
So I think my biggest concern is maybe going back for a holiday | 0:40:33 | 0:40:38
and realising I don't want to be here. | 0:40:38 | 0:40:40
Kerry's aware her feelings have impacted on the move for John. | 0:40:41 | 0:40:46
I think John initially was absolutely fine. | 0:40:46 | 0:40:50
I've probably worn him down a little bit | 0:40:50 | 0:40:52
and I do sort of nag on at him a little bit | 0:40:52 | 0:40:55
and I do think that sometimes I've maybe emotionally drained him. | 0:40:55 | 0:41:00
My concern is your happiness, really. | 0:41:00 | 0:41:03
If you decide to go back home, obviously I'll come with you. | 0:41:03 | 0:41:06
-My main concern is if our Chloe wants to... -Didn't want to come. -Yeah. | 0:41:06 | 0:41:10
But ironically, the person most opposed to a move | 0:41:10 | 0:41:13
in the first place, | 0:41:13 | 0:41:14
Chloe's now certain Australia's where her future lies. | 0:41:14 | 0:41:18
I'm glad that my dad persuaded me to move over to Australia because | 0:41:20 | 0:41:23
if I didn't, I would never have realised what a beautiful country | 0:41:23 | 0:41:26
and what opportunities lay in here. | 0:41:26 | 0:41:28
You almost feel like you've shot yourself in the foot | 0:41:28 | 0:41:30
cos she was the one that didn't want to come | 0:41:30 | 0:41:33
and now she's here, she's the one that doesn't want to go back. | 0:41:33 | 0:41:35
I think my life now is in Australia. I don't think I would ever go back | 0:41:35 | 0:41:41
to the UK to live. | 0:41:41 | 0:41:42
And boyfriend Sam also sees a sunny outlook down under. | 0:41:42 | 0:41:47
I think I'd like to stay in Australia forever. | 0:41:47 | 0:41:50
It's just a lot nicer place. | 0:41:50 | 0:41:52
I actually feel like I'm getting somewhere. | 0:41:52 | 0:41:55
The Woodlands have now been together in Australia for six months | 0:41:56 | 0:42:00
and homesickness aside, | 0:42:00 | 0:42:01
they're determined to give it their best shot. | 0:42:01 | 0:42:04
Now we've actually made the move and we're starting to feel | 0:42:04 | 0:42:07
a little bit more settled, I think that the future | 0:42:07 | 0:42:10
can only get better really. | 0:42:10 | 0:42:12
I think that we've done most of the hard work, | 0:42:12 | 0:42:14
we've got over most of the hurdles | 0:42:14 | 0:42:16
of moving and settling and finding jobs | 0:42:16 | 0:42:18
and finding our feet and I'm thinking | 0:42:18 | 0:42:20
that we'll probably start enjoying all that Australia has to offer. | 0:42:20 | 0:42:25
I think we made the right move to come over to Australia. | 0:42:25 | 0:42:28
People say you've got to give it two years. | 0:42:28 | 0:42:30
I mean, once I've settled down | 0:42:30 | 0:42:32
and I know where I want to be then that's it. | 0:42:32 | 0:42:34
And wherever it may lie, John | 0:42:34 | 0:42:36
and Kerry are both looking to the future. | 0:42:36 | 0:42:38
My hopes for the future for all of us, really, | 0:42:38 | 0:42:41
is that we're all happy and we decide where we want to be. | 0:42:41 | 0:42:45
If we stay over here, I'd like to build my own house and then | 0:42:45 | 0:42:49
live that Australian dream by getting myself a boat or a jet ski. | 0:42:49 | 0:42:53
It may have taken some time but the Woodland family are finally back | 0:43:02 | 0:43:06
together under the same roof, this time, half a world away from Wales. | 0:43:06 | 0:43:12
We wish them every continued happiness as they embark | 0:43:12 | 0:43:15
on their new lives down under. | 0:43:15 | 0:43:17 |
