If you fear for your children's futures,

0:00:020:00:04

how far would you go to give them the best life possible?

0:00:040:00:07

Would you be prepared to give up your career and leave everyone you love

0:00:070:00:11

to start from scratch on the other side of the world?

0:00:110:00:14

Jessie Samra and Kevin Raison

0:00:150:00:17

are desperate improve their family's prospects by moving to Australia.

0:00:170:00:21

I'm not happy in the UK.

0:00:210:00:23

And I'm really hoping this is the answer.

0:00:230:00:25

But not all the family are on board.

0:00:250:00:28

At the moment, no, I don't want to move out here.

0:00:280:00:31

When a trial week shows the good...

0:00:310:00:33

Oh, that is lovely!

0:00:330:00:35

..and the bad...

0:00:350:00:36

SOUND OF TRAFFIC

0:00:360:00:38

That noise from the road is just driving me crazy.

0:00:380:00:41

..will the thought of leaving loved ones behind...

0:00:410:00:44

It hurts, it actually hurts.

0:00:440:00:47

..put paid to the dream forever?

0:00:470:00:49

The world's sixth largest country, Australia's 30 times bigger

0:01:110:01:16

than the UK, but with just over a third of its population.

0:01:160:01:20

But that figure's rapidly growing,

0:01:200:01:22

thanks in part to the 23 British families

0:01:220:01:24

who make Australia their new home every day.

0:01:240:01:28

Many are drawn by the country's warmer climate

0:01:280:01:30

and famous outdoors lifestyle.

0:01:300:01:33

But not everyone makes it work

0:01:330:01:35

and around half return with their dreams a distant memory.

0:01:350:01:38

Jessie Samra and Kevin Raison

0:01:410:01:42

want the best future possible for their children,

0:01:420:01:46

but have become increasingly concerned about their

0:01:460:01:48

family's prospects if they stay in the UK.

0:01:480:01:52

Though having never been,

0:01:520:01:54

they've set their sights on a new life in Australia.

0:01:540:01:57

Ahead of them lies a week to discover

0:01:570:02:00

if the country can live up to their high expectations,

0:02:000:02:03

then they'll face perhaps the biggest decision of their lives.

0:02:030:02:08

Flying via Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, it takes the family

0:02:120:02:15

over 24 hours to travel from London to Australia.

0:02:150:02:19

When they finally touch down,

0:02:200:02:22

that's a difference of opinion on how the flight went.

0:02:220:02:25

It wasn't as tiring as I thought it would be.

0:02:250:02:27

I'm feeling quite... I'm looking forward to the day ahead.

0:02:270:02:30

-The journey really tired me.

-Yeah.

0:02:300:02:33

Arriving on Australian soil is a huge personal milestone for Kevin.

0:02:330:02:38

In all that time I've just wanted to get here,

0:02:380:02:40

just being in Australia's just... Yeah, it's good, it's really good.

0:02:400:02:44

He and Jesse are pinning their hopes on the next week being a success.

0:02:460:02:50

It's really important that Australia this week goes really well.

0:02:500:02:55

I'm not happy in the UK and I'm really hoping this is the answer.

0:02:550:03:00

It really depends on this week, you know? This is the crunch.

0:03:000:03:03

We find out whether this is something for us, or whether it's not.

0:03:030:03:07

Kevin's right.

0:03:070:03:08

The next week will decide where the family will spend the rest of their lives.

0:03:080:03:13

Meet the Samra and Raison family.

0:03:260:03:29

They are Jessie, Kevin, Kuba, Kieran and baby Che.

0:03:290:03:33

Before she met Kevin, Jessie was a single mum

0:03:400:03:44

living an active life in Wales with daughter, Kuba.

0:03:440:03:47

We were really outdoorsy, we had lots of activities going on.

0:03:470:03:50

Literally, just have quality time as a family outdoors.

0:03:500:03:54

We did loads of activities like dance and drama and horse riding

0:03:540:03:58

and karate and stuff.

0:03:580:03:59

Then four years ago, mum and daughter returned to where Jessie grew up.

0:04:030:04:07

Kuba and I moved back to West Bromwich from Wales

0:04:080:04:11

because we wanted to be close to family.

0:04:110:04:14

I just felt Kuba was missing out on seeing her grandparents more often.

0:04:140:04:18

Wanting to remain active, Jessie enrolled in some boot camp

0:04:200:04:23

training sessions and the instructor caught her eye.

0:04:230:04:27

Jessie was actually assigned to my boot camp and she accidentally

0:04:270:04:31

texted someone, thinking it was someone else and texted me instead

0:04:310:04:35

and I think the words were, "I'm smitten."

0:04:350:04:37

So... That's how I knew that Jessie liked me in some way.

0:04:390:04:42

The couple fell in love and Kevin became part of both Jessie and Kuba's world.

0:04:420:04:47

To me, Kuba's my daughter.

0:04:470:04:50

And it felt that I took that on board quite easily.

0:04:500:04:53

And soon, son Che came into their lives.

0:04:530:04:56

It feels like everything's just pieced together, finally.

0:04:560:04:59

The whole of my life has just pieced together.

0:04:590:05:02

There's also an important fifth member of the family,

0:05:020:05:06

Jessie's nephew, Kieran, who Jessie's cared for like a son.

0:05:060:05:09

I think Kieran's a massive part in mine and Kuba's lives.

0:05:090:05:13

-But he's a big part of your life, really.

-Yes.

0:05:130:05:15

He helps you coach in the business.

0:05:150:05:17

Before they met, Kevin had a dream of moving to Australia.

0:05:200:05:23

I had a dream many years ago, about the late '90s,

0:05:230:05:27

I was looking to see as much of Australia as I could.

0:05:270:05:30

But his initial plans were put on hold

0:05:310:05:34

when some unexpected bills landed on his doormat.

0:05:340:05:37

Unfortunately my dog was taken ill.

0:05:370:05:40

All the money that I'd saved went on the operations for my dog.

0:05:400:05:43

A couple of years later, after losing his father,

0:05:460:05:49

he thought it might be time to try Australia again.

0:05:490:05:53

When my dad passed away...

0:05:530:05:55

..I decided I'd like to go to Australia.

0:06:030:06:07

I didn't feel as if I had anything here for me.

0:06:070:06:10

And a friend did say to me that wherever you go,

0:06:130:06:15

you're always going to take your thoughts with you.

0:06:150:06:18

So, yeah, it's been a couple of times I've tried for Australia,

0:06:180:06:21

so third time lucky.

0:06:210:06:23

Now Kevin's dream has new life

0:06:250:06:28

and Jessie's begun to share his desire to move down under.

0:06:280:06:31

Since moving from Wales I think you've started to

0:06:310:06:35

always look for somewhere else to be.

0:06:350:06:38

-Apart from Birmingham!

-Yeah.

0:06:380:06:41

I have it in my head what Australia can provide for us.

0:06:410:06:44

So the family time, the outdoor lifestyle.

0:06:440:06:47

Jessie's worried life for a teenager in the West Midlands

0:06:490:06:52

isn't stimulating enough for Kuba.

0:06:520:06:55

She used to play the guitar, the piano, the trumpet

0:06:550:06:57

and she's given it all up.

0:06:570:06:59

Because I've come from Wales, it's like, really different.

0:06:590:07:02

So where I'd be out and doing activities, I'll just be at home.

0:07:020:07:05

Just with social media and that's it really.

0:07:070:07:10

And she believes a move down under would give Kuba a better life.

0:07:100:07:15

In Australia, she'll have that outdoor lifestyle, she'll have,

0:07:150:07:18

in my opinion, more opportunities to do all the things she wants to do.

0:07:180:07:23

And offer nephew Kieran, a brighter future too.

0:07:230:07:26

It'll open his eyes to what there is out there.

0:07:260:07:30

I just want him to fulfil his dreams.

0:07:300:07:32

So the dream's back on.

0:07:350:07:37

It's been nearly 20 years.

0:07:370:07:39

The dream's always been there, but you just kind of lay it down

0:07:390:07:42

and think it's never going to happen.

0:07:420:07:43

But Kevin's close to his Aunt Sandra

0:07:430:07:46

and is torn at the thought of leaving her behind.

0:07:460:07:48

We're so happy when we see each other and now, you know,

0:07:480:07:52

we could be making one of the biggest steps we've ever made in our lives.

0:07:520:07:56

It worries me, it does worry me.

0:07:560:07:59

Jessie and Kuba are also concerned about leaving family who live nearby.

0:07:590:08:03

-It's not that easy to just jump on a plane...

-No.

0:08:030:08:06

..and come back here if you're needed.

0:08:060:08:09

I think that'll probably hurt me the most.

0:08:100:08:13

Yeah, I know.

0:08:130:08:14

I see my nan every day and knowing that after school

0:08:140:08:18

I'm not going to go there, it's not a nice feeling.

0:08:180:08:21

While Kieran has his own doubts over the move...

0:08:210:08:23

I'm massively scared and nervous.

0:08:230:08:27

I'm leaving so much behind, friends, family,

0:08:270:08:30

they all mean a lot to me right now.

0:08:300:08:32

Despite their worries, Jessie and Kevin are raring to go.

0:08:320:08:36

I think it's a bit of a make-or-break.

0:08:370:08:40

-It's a borderline obsession now, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:08:400:08:43

We know what we want and we've got to have it within our grasp,

0:08:430:08:46

very quickly.

0:08:460:08:48

To find out if Australia will become their home, the family

0:08:540:08:57

are visiting Adelaide, the driest of the country's state capitals.

0:08:570:09:02

Their base for the week is Brighton Beach,

0:09:030:09:06

the area's a haven for families and only a 25-minute train ride into the city.

0:09:060:09:11

Once inside their temporary home, Jessie's pleasantly surprised.

0:09:130:09:17

-It's quite nice, actually. I didn't expect it to look like this.

-Yeah.

0:09:170:09:21

-The living room, with inviting fire, goes down a treat.

-OK.

0:09:210:09:25

I can feel the heat off that.

0:09:270:09:28

But it's the open-plan kitchen-diner that really hits the spot.

0:09:280:09:32

-Oh, wow.

-I like this.

-Oh.

0:09:330:09:35

It's a good size.

0:09:360:09:37

And the outside entertaining area definitely has the "wow" factor.

0:09:380:09:42

-Oh, wow!

-This is gorgeous.

-It just gets better, doesn't it?

0:09:420:09:45

This is where I would chill out.

0:09:450:09:48

As they make themselves at home,

0:09:480:09:50

Kevin can barely contain his delight and is already feeling settled.

0:09:500:09:54

It's took 20 years for me get to Australia

0:09:540:09:57

and there's certain things that just tells you it's Australia,

0:09:570:10:00

but there's nothing... It feels quite homely for us.

0:10:000:10:03

It feels normal to be here.

0:10:030:10:05

-Oh, wow!

-Wow!

0:10:050:10:07

Jessie's pinning her hopes on Australia showing

0:10:070:10:10

Kuba and Kieran how their futures could be brighter down under.

0:10:100:10:14

I think it's huge break for Kieran and Kuba.

0:10:140:10:17

I really hope they open their eyes to something bigger and better

0:10:170:10:22

for themselves.

0:10:220:10:23

But it's likely to be an uphill struggle.

0:10:230:10:26

I do admit, no, I don't want to move out here.

0:10:260:10:29

I'm worried about like, not knowing... Making friends and stuff,

0:10:290:10:32

because it's totally new people around me and I won't know anyone.

0:10:320:10:36

Kevin knows just how much is at stake.

0:10:360:10:38

This week is a life-changer for the family.

0:10:380:10:41

It's a long way to make a mistake,

0:10:410:10:43

so we've got to make sure that if we do it, we do it right.

0:10:430:10:46

Kevin and Jessie's dream of a life down under will live or

0:10:460:10:49

die in the next few days.

0:10:490:10:51

Back in the UK, the family live in Smethwick in the West Midlands.

0:11:000:11:04

Their three-bedroom house is midway through renovations.

0:11:040:11:08

We're in a really good location for our house.

0:11:080:11:10

It's in a sought-after area.

0:11:100:11:12

We've got the woods opposite so it's great for walking the dogs,

0:11:120:11:15

-for the kids to play.

-Work is literally over the road from me.

0:11:150:11:17

Yeah, you literally go across the road.

0:11:170:11:19

The house in itself is a very big property.

0:11:190:11:22

It's just not laid out the way we would like it,

0:11:220:11:24

so we're knocking it all through.

0:11:240:11:26

The family's budget for buying a home in Australia is around £250,000.

0:11:270:11:33

They know exactly what they want.

0:11:330:11:37

A swimming pool.

0:11:370:11:38

Close to the beach.

0:11:380:11:39

A hot tub.

0:11:390:11:40

A big kitchen.

0:11:400:11:42

We definitely need a big kitchen.

0:11:420:11:43

A barbecue area.

0:11:430:11:44

Crikey, it's all outdoors for me.

0:11:440:11:46

A nice big garden for the dogs.

0:11:460:11:48

To go to Australia and have something we're not happy with

0:11:480:11:51

to live in, it just wouldn't sell the dream.

0:11:510:11:54

We have to have all those ticks.

0:11:540:11:58

To find out what kind of house the family could call home

0:12:030:12:06

in Australia, today we'll show them three properties.

0:12:060:12:09

Two on budget and a third one which could be their dream house.

0:12:090:12:13

Only after they've seen each one will they discover its value.

0:12:130:12:17

For their first viewing, the family head just 10 minutes

0:12:210:12:23

south from Brighton Beach to the Sheidow Park area.

0:12:230:12:27

Popular with expat families, it's close to the beach

0:12:270:12:30

yet only about 35 minutes to the city by train.

0:12:300:12:33

So, will this four bedroom house be to the family's taste?

0:12:330:12:37

On arrival,

0:12:390:12:40

the sloping driveway doesn't get the viewing off to the best of starts.

0:12:400:12:45

-That's quite steep.

-That's quite frightening.

0:12:450:12:48

-The roof's almost level with the road.

-It's quite freaky, that.

-Yeah.

0:12:490:12:53

I don't like the steep drive for my heels.

0:12:530:12:56

But, despite the shaky start, inside, things begin to improve.

0:12:560:13:00

-Nice and bright.

-Yeah.

0:13:010:13:03

I didn't expect that because it's so low down off the road.

0:13:030:13:06

OK, bedroom.

0:13:060:13:07

The master bedroom lifts the mood further still.

0:13:070:13:10

That's nice.

0:13:100:13:12

-Oh yeah, that's nice.

-A walk-in wardrobe.

-Oh, wow!

0:13:120:13:16

I don't think it'll suit Kuba, still not enough room for her.

0:13:160:13:18

She could have all of that.

0:13:180:13:20

The other bedrooms are just so-so,

0:13:200:13:22

failing to make a positive impression.

0:13:220:13:25

-You're literally on the pavement.

-Very small.

0:13:250:13:28

While the open plan kitchen, diner and living room do win some praise...

0:13:300:13:35

It's nice. It is.

0:13:350:13:38

-I like the way it's like two halves.

-Oh, wow.

0:13:380:13:41

..it's not long-lived.

0:13:410:13:43

It just reminds me of an apartment, this whole house.

0:13:430:13:46

It's taken away from the cosiness of the house.

0:13:460:13:50

Oh, this is nice.

0:13:500:13:51

It carries onto the deck.

0:13:510:13:53

However, up on the roof deck,

0:13:530:13:54

the family can finally imagine settling in.

0:13:540:13:57

Oh, this is lovely.

0:13:570:13:58

Now this is it.

0:14:000:14:01

It's good, so if it gets too hot,

0:14:010:14:02

at least you've got the shade there as well.

0:14:020:14:04

I can see myself out here everyday.

0:14:040:14:06

So, a good ending to this viewing but overall,

0:14:080:14:11

the house received a mixed response.

0:14:110:14:13

Even so, could they afford it with their £250,000 budget?

0:14:130:14:18

I've no idea how much this could be...

0:14:190:14:23

but I'm going to guess at 190.

0:14:230:14:28

I'm thinking over the 200 mark.

0:14:280:14:31

I'm going to go £225,000

0:14:310:14:35

Do you want to do the honours?

0:14:380:14:41

-Oh.

-Wow.

0:14:420:14:44

I was the closest.

0:14:440:14:46

That's £19,000 under their budget.

0:14:460:14:49

I certainly think it makes sense to me, that price.

0:14:490:14:52

It kind of makes sense but I was expecting a little bit lower.

0:14:520:14:56

I'm excited to see if this is 231,000,

0:14:560:15:00

what on earth we can get for 250,000.

0:15:000:15:03

I want a pool!

0:15:030:15:05

To see if Jessie can get the pool she so badly wants,

0:15:120:15:15

the family head just five minutes south to Reynella,

0:15:150:15:18

a quiet family friendly area only 10 minutes from the nearest beach.

0:15:180:15:23

From the get-go, everyone seems more impressed.

0:15:250:15:28

-First impressions, really nice.

-I really like it.

0:15:300:15:34

Jessie even manages to put a positive spin on the nearby noisy highway.

0:15:350:15:40

You can't really hear much

0:15:400:15:41

but it's all about getting somewhere quick, at least you can do that.

0:15:410:15:44

Yeah.

0:15:440:15:45

-Inside, the house just can't put a foot wrong.

-Oh, nice.

0:15:450:15:50

This is what you would expect in a proper hallway.

0:15:500:15:53

It keeps you guessing as to what the rest of the house is like.

0:15:530:15:57

The master bedroom's a real crowd pleaser.

0:15:570:15:59

Oh, wow!

0:15:590:16:01

What's it...? Whoa.

0:16:020:16:04

Ah, it's gorgeous.

0:16:040:16:06

Especially with its immaculate en suite.

0:16:060:16:09

-It's a gorgeous en suite.

-I love the shower and everything.

0:16:090:16:12

Oh, it's lovely. I can see myself getting ready here in the mornings.

0:16:120:16:16

In the next bedroom...

0:16:160:16:17

-It's a good room.

-It's not bad.

0:16:170:16:19

..Jess is distracted by something she spots out of the window.

0:16:190:16:23

That would be ideal.

0:16:230:16:25

The secret's out of the bag.

0:16:250:16:28

I just seen a pool.

0:16:280:16:29

-SHE GASPS

-Did you?

0:16:290:16:31

You had to spoil it.

0:16:310:16:33

-Shall we go and look at the rest of the house?

-Yeah.

0:16:330:16:36

The quicker we move, the quicker we get the pool.

0:16:360:16:39

I don't know what this is.

0:16:390:16:41

-Could be a study.

-I thought it was going to be a dining room.

0:16:410:16:44

It's a nice lounge.

0:16:440:16:45

In the living room come office, trying to get a sneak peek

0:16:450:16:47

of the pool proves irresistible.

0:16:470:16:50

But Kuba...

0:16:500:16:51

BANG THEY LAUGH

0:16:510:16:53

..is possibly a little bit too keen!

0:16:530:16:55

The large open-plan kitchen and living area is where the house

0:16:550:16:59

really begins to put its best foot forward.

0:16:590:17:01

Oh, how lovely.

0:17:010:17:02

-JESSIE GASPS

-I love the kitchen.

0:17:020:17:05

-Look at the rounded cupboard.

-Oh, my God.

0:17:050:17:07

The dining area's gorgeous as well.

0:17:070:17:10

-I want to move in like...

-Now!

-Yeah!

0:17:100:17:12

Even just looking out, sitting down on the sofa...

0:17:130:17:16

Can look out. It's just beautiful.

0:17:160:17:18

Just onto the balcony.

0:17:180:17:20

-Oh, I could see myself living here.

-Shall we go and have a look?

0:17:210:17:24

But it's outside the piece de resistance lies in wait.

0:17:250:17:29

-Oh, wow.

-Wow.

0:17:300:17:32

Kind of want to get in it right now!

0:17:320:17:35

So, can we move in today?

0:17:350:17:36

Oh, that is lovely.

0:17:380:17:40

The whole family are smitten.

0:17:400:17:42

If it's over budget, I think we need to look at

0:17:420:17:45

selling everything that we've got back in the UK...

0:17:450:17:48

..and getting down here as soon as possible.

0:17:490:17:51

-JESSIE LAUGHS

-Kuba's already moved in!

0:17:510:17:54

Today has made it more real than ever...

0:17:540:17:57

that we could potentially live a lifestyle like this.

0:17:570:17:59

Not quite so fast, Jessie!

0:17:590:18:02

First you need to find out if your budget of £250,000

0:18:020:18:06

could cover the cost of this promising property.

0:18:060:18:09

Overall, it's stunning.

0:18:090:18:12

-There's no faults.

-Yep, you're right.

0:18:120:18:14

Everything that we want is here...

0:18:140:18:17

and more.

0:18:170:18:18

Yeah.

0:18:180:18:19

The one thing that makes me nervous now is the price.

0:18:190:18:23

I'm going to go...

0:18:230:18:25

..£265,000.

0:18:260:18:29

I've got a feeling it's at least 50 grand more than the previous one.

0:18:290:18:33

So I want to go a little bit more than that and go...

0:18:330:18:36

..285,000.

0:18:380:18:40

OK.

0:18:400:18:41

Ready? Yeah?

0:18:410:18:43

-Yeah.

-I'm really nervous!

0:18:430:18:45

-Hey!

-Wow!

-I love that price!

0:18:500:18:53

I'm shocked!

0:18:530:18:54

That's just £2,000 over their budget.

0:18:540:18:58

That's just incredible. I was not expecting that at all.

0:18:580:19:02

-I'm nervous...

-Wow.

0:19:020:19:04

We can potentially buy this house and have a good life...

0:19:040:19:07

-Yeah.

-..in Australia.

0:19:070:19:09

It's suddenly become very real.

0:19:090:19:11

To see if they can top house two, the family travel

0:19:190:19:22

to what we think could be their dream home.

0:19:220:19:24

It's located in Flagstaff Hill - a leafy suburb

0:19:240:19:28

that caters well to families with sporting clubs, schools

0:19:280:19:31

and shops on the doorstep.

0:19:310:19:33

From outside, the two-storey house has the entire family

0:19:330:19:36

grinning from ear-to-ear,

0:19:360:19:38

especially Jessie.

0:19:380:19:39

It's absolutely stunning.

0:19:390:19:41

I told you, it could only be a dream house,

0:19:410:19:43

-if it is a two-storey house.

-Yeah.

0:19:430:19:45

-It's massive.

-It looks lovely. Look at the windows as well.

0:19:450:19:48

However, the inside isn't quite what they imagined.

0:19:480:19:51

Oh, wow.

0:19:510:19:52

-I wasn't expecting this.

-That's quite strange.

0:19:520:19:55

It's nice strange though.

0:19:550:19:57

Heading straight upstairs, are the bedrooms up to scratch?

0:19:570:20:00

This is a really nice room.

0:20:000:20:02

Got good windows.

0:20:020:20:04

-I'm not really feeling this room.

-No?

0:20:040:20:06

No.

0:20:060:20:08

OK, so Kevin's not getting the right feeling.

0:20:080:20:12

But with five bedrooms in total, will the others float his boat?

0:20:120:20:16

-Smallish room really.

-It is.

0:20:160:20:18

Oh, dear.

0:20:180:20:19

In bedroom three, the reaction continues to be a little lacklustre.

0:20:190:20:23

This one works better.

0:20:230:20:25

-It does.

-Still...

-Where we've looked, the space could be better.

0:20:250:20:29

Still quite small.

0:20:290:20:30

It's not until they get to the master bedroom with en suite,

0:20:300:20:33

that they begin to appreciate what the house could offer them.

0:20:330:20:38

This is a nice bedroom.

0:20:380:20:39

This excites me.

0:20:390:20:41

This en suite, the bedroom, everything.

0:20:410:20:44

-The rest of the house needs to be worked around this room.

-Yeah.

0:20:440:20:47

-These rooms.

-Yeah.

0:20:470:20:48

Oh, that's nice though.

0:20:480:20:49

Oh, that is so pretty looking over at the pool.

0:20:490:20:52

But whilst the bedroom's balcony gets Kuba's thumbs up...

0:20:520:20:55

Out here is really nice.

0:20:550:20:57

..this is one road that's just too close for comfort.

0:20:570:21:00

Can't get peace and quiet.

0:21:000:21:02

-I wouldn't be able to enjoy it.

-No.

-There's too much noise.

0:21:020:21:06

Back downstairs,

0:21:070:21:09

the generously sized open-plan living room, kitchen and diner

0:21:090:21:12

perks everyone up.

0:21:120:21:14

It's lovely.

0:21:170:21:18

-Look at that.

-What's that?

0:21:180:21:19

Oh, wow.

0:21:190:21:21

-Wow, that's nice.

-That is beautiful.

0:21:210:21:23

-It's gorgeous.

-Love the kitchen.

0:21:230:21:24

-Kitchen's gorgeous.

-Beautiful. It's a great size.

0:21:240:21:28

Outside, while the pool area looks great...

0:21:280:21:30

Nice and deep, the pool. You can kind of...

0:21:300:21:32

The pool looks very nice.

0:21:320:21:35

It's nice.

0:21:350:21:36

-It is nice.

-CAR ENGINE RUMBLES

0:21:360:21:38

..the road noise just can't be ignored.

0:21:380:21:41

That's too noisy.

0:21:420:21:43

Sadly, that noise from the road is just driving me crazy

0:21:460:21:50

and it's coming again.

0:21:500:21:51

You can't relax in that.

0:21:520:21:53

No.

0:21:530:21:55

So, while it may not be for them,

0:21:550:21:57

could they afford this house with their budget of £250,000?

0:21:570:22:02

This one I think is about £317,000.

0:22:020:22:05

I don't think it's as high as yours.

0:22:050:22:08

-I'm going for 305,000.

-OK.

0:22:080:22:10

-OK, Kieran, do the honours.

-OK.

0:22:100:22:12

Ready?

0:22:150:22:18

-Wow.

-Oof!

0:22:180:22:20

That's £104,000 over budget.

0:22:200:22:23

Do you know what?

0:22:240:22:26

-I'm glad we liked the second house more.

-Yeah.

0:22:260:22:30

You save £100,000 for liking a house in our range.

0:22:300:22:33

It's been a day of highs and lows hunting for property

0:22:360:22:39

in Adelaide's southern suburbs.

0:22:390:22:42

Property one felt too much like an apartment,

0:22:420:22:44

despite the roof deck getting the thumbs up.

0:22:440:22:47

Property two was the real winner

0:22:470:22:49

with its large open-plan kitchen diner

0:22:490:22:52

and a pool that got the whole family smiling.

0:22:520:22:55

And property three failed to win approval

0:22:550:22:57

with the neighbouring road creating a racket the family couldn't ignore.

0:22:570:23:01

So, how will everyone vote when it comes to properties -

0:23:010:23:05

home or away?

0:23:050:23:06

Based on the properties we've seen today, our votes goes to...

0:23:070:23:10

-Australia!

-Australia.

0:23:180:23:19

Undecided.

0:23:190:23:21

Really?!

0:23:210:23:22

Why? What's...?

0:23:220:23:23

Of the three, I thought there was one that was nice

0:23:230:23:26

and the other two didn't satisfy me at all.

0:23:260:23:29

-Doesn't that second one satisfy you enough to think...?

-A lot.

0:23:290:23:33

-But why is it in the middle?

-Well done, Kuba.

0:23:330:23:35

I'm glad to see that you've done that.

0:23:350:23:38

-You've decided Australia.

-Only for houses though.

0:23:380:23:41

I'm not sure about the lifestyle and stuff yet.

0:23:410:23:44

That's not bad. Three and a half out of four's not bad.

0:23:450:23:48

It's a good start.

0:23:480:23:50

I love it. I absolutely love it.

0:23:510:23:52

-I can see us living here.

-Yep.

0:23:520:23:54

-Look at the sunset.

-It's beautiful.

-That is gorgeous.

0:23:540:23:57

Jessie and Kevin may have found their ideal home,

0:24:100:24:13

but if they're to afford it, finding the right jobs

0:24:130:24:15

with the right salaries will be vital.

0:24:150:24:18

Back in the UK, Kevin runs his own fitness company he's built up

0:24:240:24:28

over the last ten years.

0:24:280:24:30

Very good! Impressed!

0:24:300:24:32

I love what I do. It's not work, it's play.

0:24:320:24:35

I get to come out, I get to talk about the things

0:24:350:24:37

that I want to talk about.

0:24:370:24:39

It's just something that I just absolutely love doing.

0:24:400:24:43

A move down under would mean a daunting process,

0:24:430:24:46

having to re-establish the business from scratch.

0:24:460:24:49

The thought of starting over again excites me.

0:24:490:24:52

But it's in a different place, it's a completely different environment.

0:24:520:24:55

What's going to happen? I don't know, it's very scary.

0:24:550:24:58

Jessie works with Kevin looking after the marketing side of the business.

0:25:010:25:05

Working and living with Kevin is interesting.

0:25:050:25:08

We have different ideas on how the business should be run.

0:25:080:25:12

But in Australia,

0:25:120:25:13

she'd like to return to her former profession as a scientist.

0:25:130:25:17

I got a degree in forensic science and that's where my passion lies.

0:25:170:25:20

I'd like to do...

0:25:200:25:22

..some form of research and development.

0:25:230:25:26

Something that's going to help the world of science.

0:25:260:25:28

It a big day for the couple investigating work possibilities

0:25:330:25:37

in Adelaide.

0:25:370:25:38

Kevin's anxious today could make or break their dream.

0:25:380:25:42

If we don't get the work that we want, the jobs that we want,

0:25:420:25:45

then we don't get the house, the location.

0:25:450:25:47

We don't get to move here.

0:25:470:25:49

It could be as serious as that.

0:25:490:25:51

With a degree, Jessie's the main visa applicant

0:25:510:25:53

and is feeling the burden of responsibility.

0:25:530:25:56

I think it's down to me.

0:25:560:25:58

I feel the pressure's on to kind of provide for the family.

0:25:580:26:01

If they do make the move to Adelaide, until his

0:26:010:26:03

new fitness business got up and running, Kevin would work as a coach.

0:26:030:26:07

So, we sent him to the Corporate Health Group

0:26:070:26:10

who provide fitness programmes to large businesses.

0:26:100:26:13

First up, he gets a tour with one of the team leaders, Amy.

0:26:130:26:16

-OK, so this is our gym area.

-Yeah.

0:26:160:26:19

You can see a good pool facility that we also have.

0:26:190:26:21

I have a team of eight health professionals

0:26:210:26:23

with a very similar background to yours

0:26:230:26:26

and we roll out a range of different services to improve

0:26:260:26:30

the health of South Australia's working population.

0:26:300:26:33

Kevin also meets Clinical Services Director Sandra

0:26:330:26:36

and he's eager to know if his fitness qualifications

0:26:360:26:39

would be valid in Australia.

0:26:390:26:40

Your qualification would be recognised with a couple of caveats.

0:26:420:26:48

You can gain an Australian fitness certificate and once you have that,

0:26:480:26:52

then you would be able to work in a range of organisations.

0:26:520:26:57

That's good to hear.

0:26:570:26:58

Next, Kevin asks about his potential earnings.

0:26:580:27:01

What kind of salary would I expect for that?

0:27:010:27:03

Working on a full-time basis,

0:27:030:27:05

around 55,000 per year.

0:27:050:27:08

That's about £27,000 - just a tad short of the £30,000 he earns

0:27:090:27:14

from running his business.

0:27:140:27:17

It's not a bad wage, really, for the type of work that we do.

0:27:170:27:20

And finally, is there a job with Kevin's name on it?

0:27:200:27:23

We have a very large number of staff

0:27:230:27:25

and we would certainly be very interested in meeting with you

0:27:250:27:28

and looking at potential employment in the future with you.

0:27:280:27:32

Excellent. Thank you.

0:27:320:27:34

It's just the news that Kevin's been hoping for.

0:27:340:27:36

He's wanted down under and he's happy with the wages.

0:27:360:27:40

Will the picture be as rosy for Jessie?

0:27:400:27:43

She's visiting an Adelaide pathology service

0:27:430:27:46

where she meets the expat managing director.

0:27:460:27:49

-Hi, I'm Jessie.

-Hi, Jessie, I'm Ken Barr.

0:27:490:27:52

She's keen to know if her forensic science degree

0:27:520:27:54

is transferrable to Australia.

0:27:540:27:56

Jessie, you'd need to take advice on that.

0:27:560:27:58

Skills for All is a government agency

0:27:580:28:00

that provides help and advice on those sort of issues, and also

0:28:000:28:03

the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists

0:28:030:28:06

will also take a look at your degree and decide

0:28:060:28:08

whether or not that's suitable or not suitable.

0:28:080:28:11

Mmm. That's not quite as clear-cut as she might hope.

0:28:110:28:14

But as Ken explains, she does have other options.

0:28:140:28:17

There's always the technical officer route.

0:28:170:28:20

They do a lot of work in terms of helping the scientists

0:28:200:28:23

in the laboratory to make sure that samples are ready.

0:28:230:28:27

It definitely sounds like the route for me.

0:28:270:28:30

So, things are looking up.

0:28:300:28:32

But what about her earning capacity?

0:28:320:28:34

Technical officer...

0:28:340:28:36

Entry grade's around 40,000, goes up to about 55,000.

0:28:360:28:39

That's between about £20,000 and £27,000.

0:28:390:28:43

-That's a starting point for me. I'm happy with that.

-Yeah, absolutely.

0:28:430:28:47

Both Kevin and Jessie have been far from disappointed

0:28:470:28:50

with what they've discovered today.

0:28:500:28:51

So, will that translate into votes for Australia?

0:28:510:28:54

-BOTH:

-Australia.

0:29:020:29:04

-Wow.

-Really?

0:29:040:29:06

-Seriously?

-Not a surprise.

0:29:060:29:07

It's good news. It's been a good day.

0:29:070:29:09

You looked pretty happy when I saw you.

0:29:090:29:11

It's given me my oomph to get back on the career ladder.

0:29:110:29:14

Two days in a row with good news.

0:29:140:29:16

That's not bad, is it?

0:29:160:29:18

It's pretty good.

0:29:180:29:20

With work opportunities proving positive, Kevin and Jessie's dream

0:29:230:29:27

of a new life down under could be one step closer to becoming a reality.

0:29:270:29:32

The couple are passionate about their family leading an active existence.

0:29:320:29:36

So, will a day exploring the outdoor lifestyle Australia could offer,

0:29:360:29:40

convince everyone the country's where their future lies?

0:29:400:29:44

The family head out of the city into the Adelaide Hills

0:29:470:29:50

where they visit Four Oaks Farm.

0:29:500:29:52

First up, they make some furry friends.

0:29:520:29:55

Before meeting perhaps the best known Australian animal of all.

0:29:580:30:02

The day outdoors is just what Jessie hoped it would be.

0:30:070:30:11

Today... It's been perfect.

0:30:110:30:13

Seeing everyone so happy....

0:30:160:30:18

I can't put it into words

0:30:180:30:20

how important it was for me to have that family time.

0:30:200:30:23

And it's quality time, isn't it?

0:30:230:30:25

Next, they saddle up and prepare for a ride through

0:30:250:30:27

the Australian bush.

0:30:270:30:29

Oosh!

0:30:290:30:31

While Kuba and Jessie are old-timers, for Kevin,

0:30:320:30:35

this is his first time on horseback.

0:30:350:30:37

-So, hold on to that as well?

-Yeah, you can if you want.

0:30:370:30:40

Hold on to everything possible!

0:30:400:30:41

Absolutely loved today. Bit nervous about the horse riding,

0:30:430:30:45

but really enjoyed it. Yeah, it's been good.

0:30:450:30:48

Reminiscent of her earlier life in Wales,

0:30:480:30:50

the Australian lifestyle gets a big thumbs up from Kuba too.

0:30:500:30:54

It, like, brings back your memories of Wales,

0:30:540:30:56

but then it's also like totally different.

0:30:560:30:58

Like, I can imagine in summer with the beaches and stuff.

0:30:580:31:01

Time spent together has given the whole family

0:31:010:31:03

the opportunity to think about where they might be spending

0:31:030:31:06

the rest of their lives.

0:31:060:31:08

Kieran feels pulled in two directions.

0:31:080:31:11

If I come to Australia, I'm leaving behind

0:31:110:31:13

all the family - my grandparents and my friends at home.

0:31:130:31:17

If I stay at home, then I'm losing Jessie, Kevin, Jay and Kuba

0:31:170:31:20

and it's really tough.

0:31:200:31:23

Splitting Kieran and Kuba up is something Jessie

0:31:230:31:25

can't bear to think about.

0:31:250:31:27

Kieran is like my son.

0:31:290:31:31

He's always been treated as such.

0:31:310:31:33

It would be really hurtful saying goodbye to him.

0:31:350:31:37

Just, like, taking the two people that are consistent

0:31:370:31:40

in our family and tearing them apart

0:31:400:31:42

and you feel bad about that, yeah.

0:31:420:31:45

Sure.

0:31:450:31:46

I would miss Kieran cos, like, we're really close

0:31:460:31:48

and I see him every day.

0:31:480:31:50

I'll miss Kuba as well, obviously.

0:31:500:31:52

I don't... I hate to admit it, but I would.

0:31:530:31:55

The reality of moving is hitting everyone hard.

0:31:560:31:59

Kevin has serious concerns over what leaving his family behind

0:31:590:32:03

would mean.

0:32:030:32:04

I have my aunt...

0:32:040:32:06

..and I'd miss her greatly.

0:32:070:32:10

She's the closest thing I've got.

0:32:100:32:12

Yeah, it'd be tough.

0:32:170:32:19

The whole family are clearly torn, struggling with a difficult decision.

0:32:250:32:29

But based solely on lifestyle, how will they vote?

0:32:290:32:32

Based on the lifestyle we've experienced here today,

0:32:330:32:36

our vote goes to...

0:32:360:32:37

-Australia!

-Australia!

0:32:460:32:48

What made you vote undecided?

0:32:480:32:50

Because, you know, I thought the horse...

0:32:500:32:52

These are things that we could do in England.

0:32:520:32:54

You know, horse riding, Kuba's done it since she was a kid.

0:32:540:32:57

You're halfway, so I'm always happy with that.

0:32:570:32:59

Find the right interest for you and I think you would have been

0:32:590:33:02

swayed by the Australia vote.

0:33:020:33:04

-Another positive day.

-Yes, it has been good.

0:33:040:33:06

And considering it's meant to be their cold season, it has been a really nice day.

0:33:060:33:11

And no-one fell off the horse.

0:33:110:33:13

Despite Keiran's doubts, Jessie

0:33:190:33:22

and Kevin are more hopeful than ever their dream could be within reach.

0:33:220:33:26

However, if it is to become a reality,

0:33:260:33:29

the finances will need to stack up.

0:33:290:33:32

They think their home in the UK is worth around £250,000.

0:33:320:33:36

To see if their valuation is accurate, we sent round two estate agents.

0:33:360:33:40

-I'm nervous already.

-It's strange.

-Yeah.

0:33:410:33:43

Quite a decent size, a nice bay window here,

0:33:430:33:45

-creating lots of light into the room.

-It is so strange.

0:33:450:33:49

-So different.

-This is a really lovely room.

0:33:490:33:52

Good size master bedroom,

0:33:520:33:54

and the views of the park are absolutely stunning.

0:33:540:33:56

This is a really good indicator of what the property will

0:33:560:33:59

-look like when the work has been finished.

-That's nice to hear.

0:33:590:34:03

'OK, so we've got the third bedroom here.'

0:34:030:34:06

Obviously, at the moment, used as a storage room.

0:34:060:34:09

THEY LAUGH

0:34:090:34:10

So, rear garden.

0:34:100:34:12

-Oh, the back garden.

-Not a bad size at all.

0:34:120:34:15

Needs a bit of work doing to it.

0:34:150:34:18

That proves we are having a lot of work done on it.

0:34:180:34:21

I would recommend an asking price of 239,950,

0:34:210:34:24

with a quick sale price of £224,950.

0:34:240:34:27

If the building work is completed to a satisfactory standard,

0:34:270:34:30

I would market this property at 225.

0:34:300:34:33

To achieve a quick sale,

0:34:330:34:34

then I would recommend a figure of 215,000.

0:34:340:34:37

I don't think they valued it correctly. I think

0:34:370:34:39

they've gone on...really,

0:34:390:34:42

the influence of what they can see at the time.

0:34:420:34:45

What they need to see is the work we've done to the master bedroom.

0:34:450:34:49

That's how the entire house will look.

0:34:490:34:52

I think if they realised that, then they would probably come up

0:34:520:34:54

with a different value.

0:34:540:34:56

The disappointingly low valuations are the last thing Jessie

0:34:560:34:59

and Kevin wanted to hear.

0:34:590:35:01

Next, they sit down to compare the cost of living in Australia

0:35:010:35:05

with the UK, starting with the weekly food shop.

0:35:050:35:08

I'm feeling nervous.

0:35:080:35:10

Are you? That's interesting.

0:35:100:35:13

Surf washing powder is cheaper in Australia.

0:35:130:35:17

Kale is double in this country.

0:35:170:35:19

It's looking like a lot more things are more expensive in Australia

0:35:190:35:22

compared to back home. So, per week,

0:35:220:35:25

we are £24.29 worse off.

0:35:250:35:29

At around £100 per month extra on food alone,

0:35:290:35:33

it leaves the couple slightly at odds.

0:35:330:35:36

-It does change things a little bit, though.

-Do you think?

-Mm.

0:35:360:35:39

I'm not concerned.

0:35:390:35:42

Next, they move on to examine their bigger outgoings,

0:35:420:35:45

basing their figures on the second home they viewed.

0:35:450:35:48

-OK.

-Well...

0:35:500:35:53

it is a big difference in the mortgage.

0:35:530:35:56

When all the large outgoings are taken into account,

0:35:560:35:59

the difference is...

0:35:590:36:01

£1,018...

0:36:010:36:04

difference. So we are spending just over

0:36:040:36:08

a grand more a month. That's quite a lot.

0:36:080:36:13

It is a huge amount of money to be down.

0:36:130:36:15

However, they both remain positive.

0:36:150:36:18

We can get rid of things, but is that living the dream that we want?

0:36:180:36:23

We are spending more to live better.

0:36:230:36:26

-Yes, it is an upgrade.

-Exactly.

0:36:260:36:29

We've got to pay more.

0:36:290:36:30

And we haven't taken into account what we'll be earning here.

0:36:300:36:34

So, once their potential salaries are taken into account,

0:36:340:36:37

what's the total figure?

0:36:370:36:40

£344 better off.

0:36:400:36:43

That's more than an extra £4,000 in their pocket each year,

0:36:440:36:49

and they are delighted.

0:36:490:36:51

It makes it much more...

0:36:510:36:54

much more real now for us.

0:36:540:36:56

We can actually do this, we can live how we have always wanted to.

0:36:560:37:02

And be better off.

0:37:020:37:04

That's ticking every single box.

0:37:040:37:06

So, will it be a clean sweep as the couple

0:37:110:37:14

choose between finances in the UK and Australia?

0:37:140:37:18

-BOTH:

-Australia.

0:37:260:37:28

There's no surprise.

0:37:280:37:29

THEY LAUGH

0:37:290:37:32

You can't really argue with the figures, can you?

0:37:320:37:34

No, no, it was all good.

0:37:340:37:36

Whilst the week so far has shown the family how their prospects

0:37:450:37:48

could improve with a move to Australia,

0:37:480:37:50

one of their biggest mountains has yet to be climbed.

0:37:500:37:54

The family sit down to watch messages from loved ones

0:37:540:37:57

at home together.

0:37:570:37:58

-ALL:

-Hi, guys!

0:37:590:38:01

We hope you are having a good time in Australia.

0:38:010:38:06

Hi, guys. I hope you are all enjoying yourselves, especially you,

0:38:060:38:09

Keiran, because football is not the same without you here.

0:38:090:38:11

-They are funny.

-Very, actually. Good one.

0:38:110:38:15

Jess has always been very close to me.

0:38:150:38:18

We've been like a mother and daughter relationship.

0:38:180:38:21

It's always been a friendship as well.

0:38:210:38:23

Kevin is very determined and he's just a lovely boy.

0:38:230:38:28

She's more like a sister than a friend, and we just

0:38:280:38:32

tell each other everything, and she's always been a part of our family.

0:38:320:38:36

I don't want them to go, but I will miss them.

0:38:360:38:41

If she's not there, I don't know what I'm going to do exactly,

0:38:410:38:44

but, yeah, I will miss them terribly if they decided to leave.

0:38:440:38:48

It is his dream, and I would no more stand back and hold him from that,

0:38:480:38:53

but I can't help... It's the parting.

0:38:530:38:57

So... I just...

0:38:590:39:02

I love him so much, and he's like my own boy.

0:39:020:39:07

We'd really miss them, especially the children.

0:39:090:39:14

And they've always been around, and we haven't really,

0:39:140:39:17

nowhere near spent as much time with Che.

0:39:170:39:19

But...

0:39:210:39:22

You know, if that's what the children want,

0:39:220:39:26

and that's what will make them happy, and a better lifestyle,

0:39:260:39:30

we're up for it.

0:39:300:39:32

-How are you feeling?

-I miss it more now.

-Yeah.

0:39:330:39:36

Since I've been here, I've tried to put it at the back of my mind.

0:39:360:39:39

-I don't know if you guys have. I miss them now.

-Yes.

0:39:390:39:42

Just watching my dad on the TV, you just know he's upset.

0:39:420:39:47

-The quieter he is.

-If he's quiet, he's upset.

0:39:470:39:50

Quiet. He doesn't deal with upset very well.

0:39:500:39:53

It hurts, actually hurts when you watch it and to see them there.

0:39:560:40:01

They give you the advice to just enjoy yourself, but...

0:40:010:40:05

it still hurts.

0:40:050:40:06

Throughout their week, Jessie and Kevin have been consistently

0:40:090:40:12

sold on the potential new life they could be leading down under.

0:40:120:40:17

But for Keiran and Kuba, it's been a very different story,

0:40:170:40:22

with both having real concerns about leaving what they have in the UK.

0:40:220:40:27

As their final decision draws closer,

0:40:270:40:29

will the family face a future split on opposite sides of the world?

0:40:290:40:34

Australia has certainly lived up to Kevin's expectations.

0:40:390:40:43

The week has been fantastic.

0:40:440:40:47

You've got more opportunities to do more things in the outdoors,

0:40:470:40:50

knowing that you are properly not going to get affected by the weather.

0:40:500:40:53

And it feels like everything is falling into place very well.

0:40:530:40:56

I wasn't expecting everything to go so well. And it has. So that is good.

0:40:560:41:00

And Jessie feels the country can deliver the future

0:41:000:41:02

she so desperately wants for her children.

0:41:020:41:06

I'm realising the quality of life Kuba could have is amazing.

0:41:060:41:10

You know, she's always had good opportunities in life,

0:41:100:41:12

we have given her everything. But

0:41:120:41:15

can she do, or can she achieve, more?

0:41:150:41:17

Yes. And the same for Che.

0:41:170:41:20

But she understands this final vote could result in splitting up

0:41:200:41:24

Kuba and Keiran.

0:41:240:41:27

He's my little boy, that's all I can say.

0:41:270:41:30

Him and Kuba are like brother and sister. He is like a son to me.

0:41:300:41:33

It will be like tearing them apart if we decide to come here

0:41:360:41:39

and he didn't.

0:41:390:41:40

Keiran and Kuba realise opposing votes could mean

0:41:400:41:43

a heart-wrenching separation from each other.

0:41:430:41:46

We will miss each other.

0:41:470:41:48

I mean, we were brought up like brother and sister.

0:41:480:41:51

It will be really hard because he's like my friend,

0:41:510:41:53

but then he is my family as well. He is like my brother.

0:41:530:41:56

So it will be really hard because I won't have anybody else here.

0:41:560:42:00

Whether the family will stay together rests on their final

0:42:000:42:03

turn of the cards.

0:42:030:42:05

Based on our experiences down under,

0:42:050:42:07

our vote for the country we live in goes to...

0:42:070:42:10

-ALL:

-Australia.

-Well done. I'm so happy.

0:42:190:42:22

THEY LAUGH

0:42:220:42:24

That's the best. That's good news. I'm so happy.

0:42:240:42:27

Kuba, you voted undecided.

0:42:270:42:29

Yes, I think I would eventually like to live here,

0:42:290:42:31

but I'm not ready for it right now.

0:42:310:42:34

How about being ready after the summer holidays in the UK?

0:42:340:42:37

Experience an English summer and then come out here for their summer.

0:42:370:42:41

-But then it is school...

-That's a double summer in a year.

0:42:410:42:44

I'm not sure yet.

0:42:450:42:47

-I'm so pleased.

-Thank you.

0:42:470:42:49

You're going to be moving.

0:42:520:42:55

It may not be a done deal quite yet, but who knows?

0:42:550:42:59

With a little more time and persuasion,

0:42:590:43:02

Kuba may come round to the idea of starting again down under.

0:43:020:43:06

And with Jessie and Kevin having recently got engaged, we are

0:43:060:43:10

sure the family will have a very bright future

0:43:100:43:13

together on whichever side of the world they choose to spend it.
