Hello and welcome to Wanted Down Under,

0:00:020:00:04

the show that catapults a British family to the other side of the world

0:00:040:00:09

to help them make the biggest decision of their life.

0:00:090:00:13

Gordon and Ray Clark are considering a move to Australia.

0:00:130:00:17

They think it could be the key to a better work-life balance.

0:00:170:00:21

Here both of you have got to work to pay the mortgage, to live.

0:00:210:00:25

And even at the weekends you still haven't got the finances to do very much.

0:00:250:00:30

Ray wants a better future for the kids.

0:00:300:00:32

I hope they have a better standard of living over there.

0:00:320:00:35

I'm just thinking, what sort of a future is there in Britain compared to Australia?

0:00:350:00:40

They moved from Lancashire to Cardiff four years ago. But could Australia be a move too far?

0:00:400:00:46

I don't want to move again. I like Australia but I wanna stay in Cardiff.

0:00:460:00:52

Lancashire is three and a half hours away and this is 24 hours away.

0:00:520:00:57

But the sheer scale of their decision isn't lost on Gordon.

0:00:570:01:01

Realistically, are we prepared to do it? Because it's not gonna be a bed of roses.

0:01:010:01:06

Are you gonna get the right job, the right schools?

0:01:060:01:09

I think we've got a lot more information to find out this week.

0:01:090:01:11

So could the Clarks make the biggest move of their lives and go

0:01:110:01:16

where they're Wanted Down Under?

0:01:160:01:18

The gloomy economic forecast in the UK

0:01:400:01:42

makes many people see the lifestyle in Australia looking more attractive than ever.

0:01:420:01:47

But is it all sun, sea and sand?

0:01:470:01:49

And does emigrating make life better, happier and easier?

0:01:490:01:53

Last year over 60 Brits a day moved there permanently, but what goes into making such a life-changing decision?

0:01:530:02:01

We've given another 20 British families the chance to swap the UK

0:02:010:02:05

for life down under but, after just one week, which way will they vote?

0:02:050:02:10

Will they stay in the UK or move to Australia?

0:02:100:02:15

Gordon and Ray Clark live in Cardiff with their one-year-old son, Cameron,

0:02:150:02:19

and Ray's two daughters from a previous marriage - 12-year-old Gabby and Leah, who's 11.

0:02:190:02:25

Ray, the girls, and her eldest son, Jacob, relocated from Lancashire

0:02:250:02:29

to live with their stepdad, Gordon, four years ago.

0:02:290:02:33

It was a fresh start for us.

0:02:330:02:35

That was a big thing for the children, leaving their friends behind, family behind.

0:02:350:02:40

They had to make new friends.

0:02:400:02:43

Hopefully, they'll settle in fine. They've got to want it.

0:02:430:02:46

If they don't wanna go, then it probably won't happen.

0:02:460:02:49

Gordon hopes his job as a sports development officer may provide their ticket out of the UK.

0:02:490:02:55

Hello, Sports Council for Wales, Gordon speaking.

0:02:550:02:58

My job is getting more people physically active to try and reduce the burden on the health service.

0:02:580:03:04

Gordon's job is not on the national wanted list, so he could only work in South Australia on a temporary visa.

0:03:040:03:10

So if things go wrong I'm not sure we'll qualify for any child benefit, which adds to the cost implications.

0:03:100:03:17

And it's another thing, really, to worry about.

0:03:170:03:21

They're keen to find out whether the grass is greener on the other side of the world.

0:03:210:03:25

But for the girls, it means moving away from their biological father.

0:03:250:03:29

I definitely would miss my dad.

0:03:290:03:32

If I moved to Australia,

0:03:320:03:34

I probably wouldn't see him at all.

0:03:340:03:37

I'd probably see him, like,

0:03:370:03:39

not even once a year.

0:03:390:03:41

I don't know until I've visited Australia, but I don't really wanna move that much

0:03:410:03:47

because I'm gonna miss my friends and I like it in Cardiff.

0:03:470:03:50

Two years ago the family were devastated when, at 11 years old,

0:03:540:03:58

Ray's son, Jacob, lost his battle with leukaemia.

0:03:580:04:01

Jacob was my first child.

0:04:010:04:03

He was a very special boy.

0:04:030:04:05

Very kind. He was so full of life on the ward, the life and soul really.

0:04:050:04:11

We just thought he'd recover.

0:04:110:04:13

Unfortunately, he'd only been at high school a month and he relapsed.

0:04:130:04:18

They started treating him again.

0:04:180:04:20

He had radiotherapy...and chemo.

0:04:200:04:24

And he had a bone-marrow transplant and it didn't work.

0:04:240:04:29

My mum got the news that Jacob was gonna,

0:04:290:04:32

like, go...

0:04:320:04:33

away from us. We were all devastated.

0:04:330:04:38

Then they said he had a few months to live but he didn't.

0:04:380:04:42

He only lived a few days.

0:04:420:04:44

The family definitely darkened a little bit when Jacob went.

0:04:440:04:49

It was a bolt out the blue.

0:04:490:04:52

It was just awful. And we just never thought he would die.

0:04:520:04:57

Ray hopes a move down under will give the family a fresh start

0:04:570:05:01

and enable her to give up work and become a full-time mum.

0:05:010:05:05

I think my priorities have changed a lot.

0:05:050:05:08

I've missed a period of the girls' lives.

0:05:080:05:11

When we were back home from hospital it was like, gosh, you've grown up.

0:05:110:05:16

After Ray being robbed of so much time with Jacob,

0:05:160:05:19

having that extra time with Cameron and with the girls,

0:05:190:05:24

because you just don't know what's around the corner.

0:05:240:05:28

After uprooting their family once already

0:05:280:05:31

and the tragedy of Jacob's death, would they have the strength to face another upheaval?

0:05:310:05:37

My biggest fear is really us going out there and not settling.

0:05:370:05:41

It did takes the girls quite a time to move from Lancashire down here to Cardiff, to settle in.

0:05:410:05:48

When you're 24 hours away from family and friends, it's a big commitment.

0:05:480:05:53

With so much at stake, the week ahead is going to be critical in helping them decide their future.

0:05:530:06:00

To help them discover whether it will live up to their expectations,

0:06:000:06:04

we're giving them a trial run of life for one week in Adelaide.

0:06:040:06:07

We have three different lifestyles for the family to sample.

0:06:070:06:12

One in the country, one in the city and one on the coast, each with an offer of a job

0:06:120:06:18

and a brand-new way of life for them to enjoy on their budget.

0:06:180:06:21

First, let's take a look at the country lifestyle.

0:06:210:06:24

Escape to the serene Adelaide country

0:06:240:06:27

where you can relax and recharge among magnificent views and wildlife.

0:06:270:06:31

On a salary of £30,000, living out in the country would be affordable

0:06:310:06:36

with homes ranging from as little as £180,000 to £300,000.

0:06:360:06:42

An exciting position is available at Prospect Council.

0:06:420:06:44

The deputy CEO, Thornton Harfield, tells us more.

0:06:440:06:49

Hi, Gordon, and welcome to Adelaide, South Australia.

0:06:490:06:52

They're looking for a project manager to turn a suburban sports ground

0:06:520:06:57

into a regional recreation complex.

0:06:570:07:00

Gordon, this is a great project where you'd be working with a dynamic and hard-working team.

0:07:000:07:05

When you come to Adelaide, drop by.

0:07:050:07:09

So that's the kind of lifestyle they can enjoy in the country.

0:07:090:07:13

Let's see what's possible in the city on their budget.

0:07:130:07:17

Often referred to as the city within a park,

0:07:170:07:20

Adelaide's completely surrounded by green space.

0:07:200:07:23

There's a feast of sports you can join in within the city's parklands and you'll find it hard to be bored.

0:07:230:07:29

Adelaide has many residential areas in and around the city with something to suit all tastes.

0:07:290:07:35

A typical family home in an outer suburb ranges from £220,000 to £290,000.

0:07:350:07:42

A salary of £35,000 might be yours working for the Adelaide Crows football team -

0:07:420:07:48

Aussie Rules of course.

0:07:480:07:50

Hi, Gordon. I'm Craig Burton from the Adelaide football club.

0:07:500:07:54

We've got a great position here and we think it's gonna suit you.

0:07:540:07:57

We're looking for someone to develop our community programme.

0:07:570:08:01

We currently visit over 30,000 children a year in the schools in South Australia

0:08:010:08:05

and we want to bring some of those children into the club.

0:08:050:08:08

Adelaide's a great place to live and work -

0:08:080:08:12

just ask our British-born ruckman, Brad Moran. Here you are, Brad.

0:08:120:08:17

You won't regret it, Gordon, the best move I ever made.

0:08:180:08:22

It looks like their life could shape up pretty well in the city.

0:08:220:08:25

But what about a new life on the coast?

0:08:250:08:29

Adelaide's coastal districts stretch out over an area of almost 18 miles

0:08:290:08:33

so there's plenty of choice of beaches, harbours and water sports.

0:08:330:08:38

Properties right on the sea front are expensive

0:08:380:08:41

but, inland, homes sell for between £200,000 and £300,000.

0:08:410:08:47

On offer is a salary of £24,000 with a sports industry body,

0:08:470:08:53

as CEO Jan Sutherland explains.

0:08:530:08:55

We're looking for a training manager who's innovative and dynamic and has great communication skills.

0:08:550:09:01

The role encompasses training and also some lecturing in the sport and recreation industry.

0:09:010:09:06

So, we had three possible options for the Clarks.

0:09:060:09:09

In the country, Gordon could expect a lower income but the properties are cheaper.

0:09:090:09:14

The city option comes with a higher salary but the property is more expensive.

0:09:140:09:19

And the coastal option means Gordon wouldn't be earning as much

0:09:190:09:22

but the lifestyle would be right up his street.

0:09:220:09:25

So three very different possibilities for our family to try.

0:09:250:09:29

So which one did we decide would suit them best?

0:09:290:09:33

The Clark family are heading for Adelaide and the city option.

0:09:340:09:39

As they touch down after their 21-hour flight,

0:09:390:09:42

they're all jetlagged and tired but Gordon's still sore about something.

0:09:420:09:46

We got split up because a couple of the girls got upgraded to business class.

0:09:460:09:52

So Ray went up with the baby and one of the girls. They swapped, I've been in cattle class all the way.

0:09:520:09:58

Why we got business class for the baby so Gordon opted me for that. That was OK. We liked it, didn't we?

0:09:580:10:03

We've lost a complete day.

0:10:030:10:05

Monday the 18th of August has gone because we've been stuck in the air.

0:10:050:10:10

In a couple of hours, we'll probably be zonked.

0:10:100:10:14

They're on the road and on their way to their base for the week -

0:10:180:10:22

a typical Adelaide family home just a stone's throw from town.

0:10:220:10:27

Wow!

0:10:290:10:31

This four-bedroom house is just the sort of property

0:10:330:10:36

the Clarks would be looking for and includes the Aussie barbeque!

0:10:360:10:39

-Do you know how to work these things?

-Are the neighbours well insured?!

0:10:390:10:46

It has masses of space for three energetic kids...

0:10:460:10:49

-Do you want to go and find the bedrooms, girls?

-Yeah!

0:10:490:10:53

..and a travel-weary mum and dad.

0:10:530:10:54

-Oh, wow. That's good. This is Cameron's bed.

-Wa-hey!

0:10:590:11:03

You go night-night, you go night-night.

0:11:030:11:07

We've kept the best room until last.

0:11:070:11:09

-What have we not seen, Leah? Oh, my goodness me.

-Cool.

0:11:090:11:13

-This would be my kind of living room.

-Ah!

-It's just amazing!

0:11:160:11:21

I hope we've got films to watch.

0:11:210:11:23

You're not on holiday, Gordon. There's work to be done!

0:11:230:11:27

The next few days are very important.

0:11:270:11:29

If we'd come on holiday, we probably wouldn't do some of the things that we need to do -

0:11:290:11:35

look at house prices, what it does cost to live in Adelaide,

0:11:350:11:39

look at what opportunities there are in jobs.

0:11:390:11:42

So, as a starter, it's been good so far but we've got a lot more information to find out this week.

0:11:420:11:48

They certainly have. If the house prices or Gordon's work plans don't pan out,

0:11:480:11:54

then the whole trip could be in vain.

0:11:540:11:56

The Clark family could return home to the UK disappointed.

0:11:560:12:00

Back in the UK, the Clarks' family home, worth £300,000, is their castle.

0:12:040:12:10

They hope a move down under could leave them almost mortgage-free,

0:12:100:12:15

allowing Ray to stop work and spend more time with the kids.

0:12:150:12:19

If they're to achieve this, they must stay within their budget of £200,000.

0:12:210:12:25

That's just over 400,000 Australian dollars.

0:12:250:12:29

Adelaide is still one of the cheapest Australian cities for property

0:12:290:12:33

but they may struggle to find quite what they're looking for.

0:12:330:12:36

Some difficult compromises might have to be made.

0:12:360:12:40

It's all right.

0:12:400:12:42

-What d'you think then?

-Nice area.

0:12:420:12:44

I notice there's a main road behind it which is something we'd have to think about,

0:12:440:12:50

but the area itself is lovely.

0:12:500:12:52

-I like the address, Happy Valley.

-Yeah.

0:12:520:12:55

Property one is a four-bedroom bungalow on the market

0:12:550:12:58

for 400,000 or £195,000, which is just under their original budget.

0:12:580:13:05

-That's nice.

-Oh, yeah. I love that picture on the wall.

-It's nice.

0:13:060:13:11

The Clarks want something with a bit more space than where they're staying.

0:13:110:13:16

This is better.

0:13:160:13:19

-This is bigger.

-Yeah, this is good.

0:13:190:13:22

Nice big kitchen.

0:13:220:13:24

-Big lounge.

-Yeah, I love this open plan. Yeah, this kind of house.

0:13:240:13:30

Lots of space, that's what we need.

0:13:300:13:32

I just spotted the master bedroom. Let's look in there.

0:13:320:13:37

Well, Ray, you've got enough room for your clothes here.

0:13:370:13:40

I've never got enough room in the wardrobe back in Cardiff.

0:13:400:13:43

-Mum, this is my room.

-Nice try, Leah, but you guys will have to fight it out over the other three bedrooms.

0:13:430:13:50

I like this one.

0:13:500:13:52

-This is definitely mine.

-This is nice.

-It's nice and big.

0:13:520:13:55

It's still smaller than my one at home though.

0:13:550:13:58

You two girls could have these as cosy rooms and then that living room could be your playroom.

0:13:580:14:04

This is a nice bedroom. I'd probably pick it as my bedroom.

0:14:040:14:09

-It's cosy.

-Yeah.

-It's my bedroom.

0:14:090:14:12

I think it might be war. But the age-old struggle for the biggest room

0:14:120:14:17

is a good sign - at least they can see themselves living here.

0:14:170:14:20

-What's in there?

-What's in this room?

-It's the bathroom!

0:14:200:14:24

Wow, there's three little rooms to it.

0:14:240:14:26

You've got your toilet...

0:14:260:14:27

Oh, right, so they're all separate rooms. That helps.

0:14:270:14:31

If you want you could knock a couple of walls out and make a nice big bathroom.

0:14:310:14:36

I like it like this because it's more private.

0:14:360:14:39

-You don't have to wait for people to come out the bath to go to the toilet.

-Yeah, that's good.

0:14:390:14:45

So if they're not fighting over the bathroom, then they'll have plenty of time to relax in the garden.

0:14:450:14:51

You could launch yourself into a big pool in there.

0:14:510:14:54

You could have a little bar and Gordon could bring us cool drinks.

0:14:540:14:59

There's one chance.

0:14:590:15:01

But for Ray there's no point de-stressing in the pool when she gets stressed out by the traffic.

0:15:010:15:06

You can hear the road noise.

0:15:060:15:09

Size-wise, excellent, but the traffic's obviously continuous.

0:15:090:15:15

This house maybe round the corner would be good.

0:15:150:15:20

But it's financial issues that are in the front of Gordon's mind.

0:15:200:15:25

I'm a bit concerned about the price in terms of what you're getting for the money.

0:15:250:15:32

But we're looking at two other areas as well so I think it would be unfair to compare

0:15:320:15:38

-until we look at the other properties.

-Yeah.

0:15:380:15:41

I think we've got to be open-minded and see what else there is to offer.

0:15:410:15:45

In that case, let's get back on the road and check out property number two,

0:15:470:15:51

20 minutes out of the town and just a short drive to the beach.

0:15:510:15:55

This looks nice. I like the front of it.

0:15:550:15:57

Much better. You need a chairlift to get up the drive.

0:15:570:16:02

This four-bedroom property is more expensive at 430,000 or £210,000.

0:16:020:16:08

The Clarks would need a small mortgage if they were to afford this house.

0:16:080:16:13

This is better.

0:16:130:16:14

Let's put you down, young man.

0:16:150:16:19

There we go. Oh, I feel at home already.

0:16:190:16:22

Right, who's going through to the next room first?

0:16:220:16:25

Oh, this is fantastic!

0:16:250:16:27

Yes, I like this. Oh, yeah.

0:16:270:16:30

This is what I think of as Australian houses.

0:16:300:16:35

-Yeah. Lots of room.

-Brilliant.

-It's got a lot of potential.

0:16:350:16:40

Yeah, I like this. I love this area.

0:16:400:16:43

Property two may be a bungalow but the huge floor space

0:16:430:16:46

allows for two dining areas and two living areas.

0:16:460:16:49

And the bedrooms are big as well.

0:16:490:16:52

Nice super king bed in here.

0:16:520:16:54

One thing I'd have to change is the tiles in here.

0:16:540:16:57

Too old.

0:16:570:16:59

They're not very nice.

0:16:590:17:01

-Pink, flowery.

-Yes, they would have to go.

0:17:010:17:04

Cameron doesn't seem so worried about the slightly outdated bath tiles.

0:17:040:17:08

-This way, Cameron.

-See, he's loving this house.

0:17:080:17:12

He's not moaned in this house.

0:17:120:17:15

He might do when he sees the garden.

0:17:150:17:17

-I love all this rockery, it's beautiful.

-Oh, cracking view over that way.

0:17:200:17:26

-It's quite nice up here.

-Yeah, it is.

0:17:260:17:29

I don't think I could look after the garden.

0:17:290:17:31

It looks a bit high-maintenance.

0:17:310:17:33

That's a job for when Nanny comes in the summer.

0:17:330:17:36

Lucky Nanny! High-maintenance garden aside, what do the Clarks think of property number two?

0:17:360:17:41

This is Australia as I was thinking before I came out.

0:17:410:17:46

It's got a lot of good features. Good location,

0:17:460:17:50

it's got schools nearby. You can commute into the city from here.

0:17:500:17:56

And we're near the beach as well which is good.

0:17:560:17:58

It would be nice to see it in the summer but we are in the winter

0:17:580:18:02

and it's been raining and it's cold. It's not all sunshine.

0:18:020:18:07

It certainly feels like a home.

0:18:070:18:10

-It feels like a family home, more importantly.

-Yeah.

0:18:100:18:13

Property two seems like their ideal home

0:18:130:18:16

and, being so close to the beach, it can also provide them with the Aussie lifestyle they're after.

0:18:160:18:21

But they've still got one more house to check out.

0:18:210:18:24

Property three is an eight-minute drive from the centre of Adelaide.

0:18:240:18:30

It has three bedrooms and a great big garden.

0:18:300:18:34

It's priced at 480,000 or £235,000

0:18:340:18:37

which is £65,000 over their dream of life mortgage-free.

0:18:370:18:43

All these figures are just too much for Cameron and he goes for a lie down.

0:18:430:18:47

I'm going to put the baby down.

0:18:470:18:50

Time to go to sleep.

0:18:500:18:52

Come on, let's see what else we can find.

0:18:520:18:55

-The main room.

-It's quite a small living space, isn't it?

-Is it? It's a nice big kitchen as well.

0:18:550:19:02

It's a bit hidden away as well. Big pantry again.

0:19:020:19:08

Aww.

0:19:170:19:19

Shall we go and find the bedrooms?

0:19:210:19:25

Who's going to get the best room in this house?

0:19:250:19:29

This is sweet.

0:19:290:19:31

I like it, I'd probably have it as my bedroom, if it was the best one. Well, it is, so far, the best one.

0:19:310:19:38

Don't bagsy the room yet, Leah, you might find you like bedroom two, and it's pink.

0:19:380:19:44

The kids' rooms are well done out.

0:19:440:19:46

Yeah, they're lovely.

0:19:460:19:48

I don't like the window. The window's straight onto a fence and a caravan.

0:19:480:19:54

I don't like that bit.

0:19:550:19:57

It could be a toss of a coin again.

0:19:570:20:00

There isn't a fourth bedroom so the girls would have to share.

0:20:000:20:04

While Cameron sleeps, there's just time to take a peek at the garden.

0:20:040:20:08

-A nice back garden for Cameron.

-Yeah.

0:20:080:20:11

But...

0:20:110:20:13

-Industry.

-It's blocking the sun for the light, isn't it?

0:20:130:20:18

-I don't like this one at all.

-We need four bedrooms at least.

0:20:180:20:21

We probably will have a lot of visitors.

0:20:210:20:24

Property in Adelaide has gone up... well, in Australia, period, it has gone up quite a lot

0:20:240:20:31

from previous programmes I've seen. People used to say

0:20:310:20:35

you get so much for your money in Australia but not the case, I don't think, now. They've caught us up.

0:20:350:20:43

It's not gonna be as simple or straightforward as we thought.

0:20:430:20:47

The dream was to get rid of the mortgage completely.

0:20:470:20:49

I don't think that's gonna be possible.

0:20:490:20:51

There's definitely gonna be a mortgage but hopefully not as big.

0:20:510:20:55

So we need to see if the wages reflect the rest of it.

0:20:550:20:59

No pressure then!

0:20:590:21:02

The Clarks have seen three properties.

0:21:020:21:06

House one had plenty of space inside but the noise of the traffic outside really put them off.

0:21:060:21:12

They all loved the second house but Nanny would really have her work cut out in the garden.

0:21:120:21:16

And property three proved that city living comes at a price,

0:21:160:21:21

and being so close to an industrial park didn't go down well at all.

0:21:210:21:25

With all that in mind, which way will they vote on property, UK or Australia?

0:21:250:21:30

I really want to vote...

0:21:300:21:33

sort of level, neither for or against.

0:21:330:21:36

But we do have to make a collective decision so I think we're gonna have a go.

0:21:360:21:41

And our vote is...

0:21:410:21:43

-Australia.

-Great Britain.

-Great Britain.

-Australia.

0:21:440:21:49

It's a 50:50 split but does it mean a change of heart for Leah?

0:21:490:21:54

So some disagreement on potential properties in Adelaide and it's clear

0:21:570:22:03

the onus is on Gordon to find work to finance a new lifestyle.

0:22:030:22:07

Back home Gordon works as a sports development officer, where he earns £38,000 a year.

0:22:090:22:16

He loves the work he does in the UK so the job here would have to be special to convince him to move.

0:22:160:22:23

It's the big work day with the Australian Rules football team. It should be interesting.

0:22:260:22:32

I know nothing about that but sports development, recreation development is the same whichever sport.

0:22:320:22:39

If the Clarks are even to consider making this move, Gordon's salary

0:22:390:22:42

here would have to be high enough to support the whole family.

0:22:420:22:45

I think if the salary is not at the level that we're looking for, then that might be the final nail.

0:22:450:22:52

I think it might well be, no, we're gonna have to stick it out at home with both of us working,

0:22:520:22:58

or we have to have a complete rethink about is it possible, really, for Ray to stay off work?

0:22:580:23:03

I think certainly if it's not at the level that we're looking for

0:23:030:23:07

then I think that probably is the end of the Australian dream.

0:23:070:23:11

Even if today's job pays enough on a temporary visa they'd be unable

0:23:110:23:15

to claim any state benefit so the pressure's really on.

0:23:150:23:19

Meanwhile, across town, Ray and the kids are checking out

0:23:190:23:21

how far their pennies will stretch at the local market and how they'd cope on one income.

0:23:210:23:27

Nice pasta. Look at all these meats here.

0:23:290:23:31

Try a piece, see what you think.

0:23:310:23:33

Melting cheddar, so that's like cooking cheddar.

0:23:330:23:38

-I like it.

-I don't think anything's particularly cheap

0:23:380:23:43

looking at some of the prices.

0:23:430:23:46

I think it's the same.

0:23:460:23:48

From the various bits of shopping we've done some things are actually more expensive.

0:23:480:23:52

I noticed nappies seem to be more expensive. Chocolate, double!

0:23:520:23:56

It's really expensive. Maybe it's because of the imports.

0:23:560:24:01

Everything else, I think, is on a par. I think people moving

0:24:010:24:08

out here are gonna be shocked at how much everything costs.

0:24:080:24:11

If you're emigrating out here I think you need the same salary

0:24:110:24:13

as what you've got in Britain because your money isn't going to spread any further.

0:24:130:24:19

So it's essential that Gordon can achieve a good salary.

0:24:190:24:22

He's heading for the AAMI Stadium in the centre of the city,

0:24:220:24:25

home to Aussie Rules football team the Adelaide Crows.

0:24:250:24:28

We've arranged for him to meet human-resources manager and ex-player, Craig Burton

0:24:280:24:34

to find out more about the exciting new job they're offering.

0:24:340:24:38

-Gordon.

-Hi.

-How you going?

-Great to meet you, Craig.

0:24:380:24:40

Welcome to the Adelaide footy club.

0:24:400:24:42

Thanks very much. It's not a sport we do much in the UK so I'm interested to find out more.

0:24:420:24:47

The Crows are one of the premier clubs in Australia.

0:24:470:24:51

They use this position of influence to educate up to 30,000 children a year on a variety of life skills.

0:24:510:24:57

Part of Gordon's role would be in schools on the frontline.

0:24:570:25:00

What would be the job, in a nutshell, really?

0:25:030:25:05

In a nutshell, it's using our brand,

0:25:050:25:07

the Adelaide football club or the Crows, to go into schools and try

0:25:070:25:12

and deliver some really good messages, whether that be better

0:25:120:25:16

ways of eating, better ways to exercise, better ways to teach kids how to make the right decisions.

0:25:160:25:22

So it's adding to an already good education system using

0:25:220:25:26

the Adelaide football club brand to deliver the programme.

0:25:260:25:30

Your role would be co-ordinating that whole thing.

0:25:300:25:35

This is an area used quite a bit in the football club.

0:25:350:25:38

Part of your role will be working with the players.

0:25:380:25:41

A lot of our younger players, our first-year players who may not play every week, they'll do a lot

0:25:410:25:46

of the community work. The senior players, our top echelon,

0:25:460:25:49

if you want to compare one of our players to an English Premier League

0:25:490:25:53

senior player, say a David Beckham or something like that,

0:25:530:25:57

those guys still have a set amount of appearances they have to do in the community.

0:25:570:26:02

-How about we go outside and have a look at the oval?

-OK, yeah. Great.

0:26:020:26:05

Back at Central Market, Ray's worried about how Gordon's getting on at work.

0:26:050:26:10

I think Gordon's not sure what to expect today.

0:26:100:26:13

He's hoping that the pay would be similar to Britain.

0:26:130:26:17

I think he'd be disappointed if it's half the pay, or even lower.

0:26:170:26:20

-He's got a lot of apprehensions about it.

-She's all too aware that a good income

0:26:200:26:26

means she could be a stay-at-home mum.

0:26:260:26:30

I just want to spend time with Cameron.

0:26:300:26:32

I know how quickly they grow up, and life can be short,

0:26:320:26:37

as we know with losing our precious Jacob.

0:26:370:26:40

I don't want the rushing here, rushing there, the pressure of life.

0:26:420:26:47

I think in Britain we've got it wrong.

0:26:470:26:49

I think it's important to be at home for your children.

0:26:490:26:52

I think family is the most important thing.

0:26:520:26:55

At the stadium, Craig's decided that since Gordon doesn't have

0:26:550:26:58

Aussie Rules in his blood, it needs putting there.

0:26:580:27:01

A knowledge of the game would be essential for this job.

0:27:010:27:05

Blooming heck! It's a lot bigger than I thought.

0:27:050:27:06

A perfect excuse for a bit of a kick around.

0:27:060:27:10

I tell you what, how about we go out in the oval and I'll show you how to kick?

0:27:100:27:13

-OK.

-Come on, let's go.

0:27:130:27:15

There you go.

0:27:190:27:20

-Easy.

-Excellent.

-Do you want to try?

0:27:200:27:23

As long as they edit that bit into my kick!

0:27:230:27:25

That would be terribly unethical, Gordon.

0:27:250:27:27

You'll have to show Craig you've got the skills to pay the bills if you want this job.

0:27:270:27:33

-Like this?

-That look pretty good.

-And just have a go, yeah?

0:27:330:27:35

-Aim for the big sticks, watch the ball.

-OK!

0:27:350:27:37

We'll sign him up, I think.

0:27:420:27:44

That guy's all right.

0:27:440:27:45

-That's not a bad kick.

-Maybe I'll get a game on Sunday.

0:27:450:27:47

-You never know, kicking like that. Well, done.

-Thoroughly enjoyed it.

0:27:470:27:51

It's not that difficult, this.

0:27:510:27:53

-Easy game, isn't it?

-Well, maybe not.

0:27:530:27:56

I'll go in the stands next time before I come and play.

0:27:560:27:58

I didn't want to say that, Gordon, but I think you'd be better off behind the desk.

0:27:580:28:02

What sort of salary package is on offer for a role like this?

0:28:050:28:08

Probably in that 70,000 sort of range.

0:28:080:28:12

We're also looking at providing a vehicle which will add to the salary.

0:28:120:28:15

That certainly is a good range I think.

0:28:150:28:17

So Gordon would be paid a salary equivalent of £35,000 but the

0:28:170:28:22

company car takes his earnings above what he gets in the UK.

0:28:220:28:26

I think it went really well. I think Gordon's skills and everything about

0:28:260:28:30

him, his personality, was really good. Oh, look at that!

0:28:300:28:34

We have a programme that we're trying to establish and

0:28:340:28:36

Gordon so far, I haven't spoken to anyone else, fits the bill.

0:28:360:28:40

This is easy, can I have a job?

0:28:400:28:42

The package is a similar level to what I'm on now,

0:28:420:28:45

and the car makes it very worthwhile as well because there will be lot of travelling, etc.

0:28:450:28:51

So with a good salary then we can get rid of the mortgage, just about.

0:28:510:28:57

Yeah, the options are wide open now.

0:28:570:29:01

Sounds good, but there's still the all-important vote on work. Will it be the UK or Australia?

0:29:010:29:07

Well, it's been a great day here with the Adelaide Crows.

0:29:070:29:10

Not only have I learnt about a potential job opportunity,

0:29:100:29:13

I've also learned a bit of Aussie Rules football which I've never done before.

0:29:130:29:17

The job really is something that I think I would enjoy doing

0:29:170:29:21

and with that in mind my vote is going to be...

0:29:210:29:26

Australia!

0:29:260:29:28

Many Brits who visit Australia are astonished by

0:29:330:29:37

the sheer size of the country compared to the little-old UK.

0:29:370:29:41

So here's some advice if you decide to travel down under.

0:29:410:29:44

Australia's a vast and massive land.

0:29:440:29:47

You could actually put the UK in it 32 times and Europe in it twice.

0:29:470:29:52

The longest internal flight in the world is in Austria from Perth to Brisbane or vice versa.

0:29:520:29:57

It's over 5½ hours' flying time.

0:29:570:29:59

From the UK you could fly for four hours and be in Egypt.

0:29:590:30:02

So, with a total land area of almost three million square miles, what's the best way to get from A to B?

0:30:020:30:10

It's very important to plan your itinerary properly.

0:30:100:30:13

You can't quickly pop over to Sydney then pop to Alice Springs

0:30:130:30:16

and Ayers Rock and then go to see the Great Barrier Reef. You can't do that in a day, or even in a week.

0:30:160:30:21

There's nothing like a little bit of local knowledge to help you on your way.

0:30:210:30:25

What do the Aussies themselves recommend you see?

0:30:250:30:27

Ayers Rock because it is truly Australian and the

0:30:270:30:31

local people there, the indigenous Aboriginals, are fantastic to meet.

0:30:310:30:35

I'd go up to the Gold Coast around Queensland, Cairns. Western Australia's great.

0:30:350:30:39

Places like Kakadu National Park just blow you away.

0:30:390:30:42

The Whitsunday Islands, which is lovely to fly to and then do a boat cruise.

0:30:420:30:47

And if you do plan to travel around Australia please leave your Aussie stereotypes at home.

0:30:470:30:52

People think we wear cork hats and walk around like Crocodile Dundee, it's not the case.

0:30:520:30:57

There are some people like that but they are few and far between.

0:30:570:31:01

Gordon and Ray Clark from Cardiff are convinced that their life would

0:31:030:31:07

improve greatly if they moved to Australia.

0:31:070:31:09

I'm hoping it's a better lifestyle and a better future for the children, and

0:31:090:31:15

so it's a case of let's have a look before it's too late.

0:31:150:31:18

Gordon's confident he could find a job he loves as much as his occupation at home.

0:31:180:31:23

'I must admit I was really impressed actually.'

0:31:230:31:26

I think if there was an opportunity here then I'd definitely have a look at it.

0:31:260:31:30

But surviving on a single salary may mean that life in Oz isn't all it's cracked up to be.

0:31:320:31:38

I think people moving out here are gonna be shocked at how much everything costs.

0:31:380:31:43

If you're emigrating out here I think you need the same salary as what you've got in Britain

0:31:430:31:48

because your money isn't going to spread any further.

0:31:480:31:51

And having already been uprooted four years ago when they moved to Cardiff, can Gabby and Leah be persuaded to

0:31:510:31:57

relocate again, this time to the other side of the world?

0:31:570:32:00

I don't wanna move again,

0:32:000:32:02

and I can't really keep in touch with my dad because we'd be half way around the world.

0:32:020:32:07

I like Australia but I think I wanna stay in Cardiff.

0:32:070:32:13

Without the girls on board Gordon and Ray's dream may never become reality.

0:32:130:32:18

Day five of the Clarks' Australia trial week and as they reflect on the life-changing decision

0:32:240:32:29

they've got to make Gordon and Ray realise

0:32:290:32:32

they've got some convincing to do with animal-loving Leah and Gabby.

0:32:320:32:37

What's that?

0:32:390:32:41

You're just beautiful.

0:32:410:32:45

They're kangaroos, they go bouncy.

0:32:450:32:50

Oh, my God, I don't like the emus.

0:32:500:32:53

Mr Emu.

0:32:530:32:55

Look at this one.

0:32:550:32:57

Of all the Aussie animals, there's one they really want to meet.

0:32:570:33:01

-He's so gorgeous.

-He's so soft.

0:33:010:33:05

Would you like to have a hold?

0:33:050:33:09

-Absolutely.

-He's coming across.

0:33:090:33:12

-There we are.

-He is just gorgeous.

0:33:160:33:20

Back in the UK, Ray and Gordon often plan trips

0:33:230:33:26

based on some of Jacob's favourite activities to help remember him by.

0:33:260:33:30

He would have loved it, yeah.

0:33:300:33:33

He would probably be trying to box the kangaroos and stuff!

0:33:330:33:37

-He'd love it.

-He didn't see all this different wildlife that we're seeing.

0:33:370:33:41

He did see it in books and films but not in the person.

0:33:410:33:48

It would be really fun with him there.

0:33:480:33:52

Yeah, the wildlife was just Jacob.

0:33:520:33:54

It was just him. He just adored

0:33:540:33:59

nature, he cared about the planet.

0:33:590:34:03

Coming to Australia was a big thing about the wildlife because we was gonna come with Jacob last year.

0:34:030:34:09

His dream was to work with wildlife.

0:34:090:34:11

So it is a big thing and he would have loved all this.

0:34:110:34:16

It's great to see that and it's

0:34:160:34:21

a way of remembering Jacob.

0:34:210:34:25

We're going to go back home and we're going to be talking about

0:34:250:34:28

holding the koala, feeding the kangaroos, Leah running away from the emus.

0:34:280:34:33

It will just be fun and we don't have enough of that.

0:34:330:34:37

Leah has had plenty of time to reflect on thoughts of leaving the UK behind.

0:34:400:34:44

I like Australia but I think I want to stay in Cardiff.

0:34:440:34:49

I love it

0:34:490:34:51

but I've settled in in Cardiff.

0:34:510:34:54

I could probably settle in Australia

0:34:540:34:57

but I don't want to move again

0:34:570:34:59

and I can't keep in touch with my dad because

0:34:590:35:03

I'd live half way round the world from him.

0:35:030:35:05

Would you like to have a hold? Pop your hands out.

0:35:050:35:08

Just put your hands like that.

0:35:080:35:10

Just let him climb over wherever he wants.

0:35:100:35:14

I'm really, really, really enjoying it.

0:35:140:35:18

It's probably the best day.

0:35:180:35:20

Oh, he's slithering all the way down me.

0:35:200:35:24

I really would miss my dad and my friends, my best friend especially.

0:35:240:35:30

I'd have trouble with them.

0:35:300:35:32

I suppose we could e-mail each other but it's hard with the time differences and everything.

0:35:320:35:38

It's OK but I can't see myself living here.

0:35:380:35:41

The Clarks' exploration into the Aussie lifestyle has been

0:35:410:35:43

important for all the family but the time to reflect has brought doubts to the surface.

0:35:430:35:49

How will they vote based on their day?

0:35:490:35:52

Is the lifestyle better in the UK or in Australia?

0:35:520:35:57

The last few days in Australia have been pretty impressive.

0:35:570:36:01

There's so much to do and see and I think overall...

0:36:010:36:05

Our vote is...

0:36:050:36:08

Australia.

0:36:080:36:10

All week the Clark family has been undecided

0:36:140:36:17

whether or not to move down under.

0:36:170:36:19

Will hearing message from friends and family help them make their final decision?

0:36:190:36:24

We've compiled some thoughts from loved ones back home.

0:36:240:36:28

Up first are family friends the Tanners.

0:36:280:36:31

We've a very close relationship with the Clarks and we're like one big happy family really.

0:36:310:36:36

When they moved in, Gordon was by his car one day

0:36:360:36:40

and I said, "If there's any parcels you'd like me to take out."

0:36:400:36:45

He said, "Does that include babysitting?" So we've become very close.

0:36:450:36:51

Just letting you know if you go I will be upset but it's up to you

0:36:510:36:56

because I'm your best friend

0:36:560:36:58

-but really miss you.

-Gabby is very sweet,

0:36:580:37:02

intelligent, and very bright. She's already mastered the Welsh language

0:37:020:37:07

and she won't have a problem with the Aussie twang out there I'm sure.

0:37:070:37:09

Leah's more of a robust tomboy -

0:37:090:37:12

the one who will want to go outback and have a look at the wildlife.

0:37:120:37:18

Gordon's strengths are

0:37:180:37:20

he's very organised, he likes to be in control and he's very dedicated

0:37:200:37:25

to his work and to his family life.

0:37:250:37:29

When our family were introduced to Jacob's condition,

0:37:290:37:34

Gordon was again tested.

0:37:340:37:38

It must have taken its toll on Gordon's nerve and goodwill.

0:37:380:37:43

But that man deserves a medal for everything that he's been challenged with.

0:37:430:37:48

She's a wonderful mother

0:37:480:37:50

and has coped tremendously over her terrible loss.

0:37:500:37:55

And she's a...

0:37:550:37:57

fine, fine young woman.

0:37:570:37:59

She's such a fighter and a survivor

0:37:590:38:03

that you don't really know what she's going through because she takes everything in her stride.

0:38:030:38:09

With her move to Australia, she's not necessarily putting away

0:38:090:38:13

her memories of Jacob,

0:38:130:38:15

it's more to do with her moving on and taking herself and her family

0:38:150:38:21

forward into a new environment.

0:38:210:38:24

But Jacob will be there wherever she goes.

0:38:240:38:28

I don't want her to go.

0:38:290:38:32

I'm scared a bit because I don't want to lose her because...

0:38:320:38:37

We would miss them tremendously because we would miss seeing them every day.

0:38:400:38:45

We'd miss the family life we all have together.

0:38:450:38:49

We can't really imagine it, to be honest.

0:38:500:38:54

Well, Lauren is going to miss you.

0:38:590:39:01

I was filling up for you.

0:39:030:39:05

It was nice to hear what they had to say and the nice things and it

0:39:070:39:11

was slightly more emotional than I thought it would be.

0:39:110:39:13

You looked like you were going to cry.

0:39:130:39:16

It was quite emotional actually.

0:39:160:39:19

It was when Uncle David said you deserve a medal it looked like you were

0:39:190:39:23

going to start blubbering.

0:39:230:39:25

Were you emotional, Leah?

0:39:250:39:28

It was nice to hear them saying that they would miss us and that.

0:39:280:39:31

It was upsetting,

0:39:310:39:33

because if we did move here to Australia

0:39:330:39:38

we would have to leave them all behind.

0:39:380:39:41

We wouldn't be able to see them as often.

0:39:410:39:44

Like with my dad,

0:39:440:39:46

we can drive down to see him and I've got lots of friends there

0:39:480:39:53

and I wouldn't want to leave any of them.

0:39:530:39:56

Now I want to stay in Cardiff.

0:39:560:39:58

I was all for coming here at first, though.

0:39:580:40:01

I don't want to go either. If we did move and it was like my last week,

0:40:010:40:06

that would be really upsetting.

0:40:060:40:08

I think we have to do what's right for our family.

0:40:080:40:11

It's no foregone conclusion yet

0:40:110:40:13

in terms of whether it is Australia or the UK.

0:40:130:40:18

We've got a lot of thinking and decisions still to make

0:40:180:40:21

but at least now we can make them on an informed basis.

0:40:210:40:25

The week in Adelaide has been mixed for the Clarks with the

0:40:270:40:30

girls reluctant to uproot and leave their school and friends behind.

0:40:300:40:35

For Gordon and Ray though, Australia seems to offer the new start they so crave.

0:40:350:40:40

It's the Clarks' last day in Adelaide,

0:40:440:40:46

and they've had a tough week test-driving what life could be like down-under.

0:40:460:40:50

Their dream of living mortgage free and the cost of living in Oz was a real wake-up call.

0:40:500:40:55

It looks like property in Adelaide has gone up.

0:40:550:40:58

People always used to say you get so much for your money in Australia

0:40:580:41:02

but it's not the case any more - I think they've caught us up.

0:41:020:41:07

Against all expectations, Gordon found a job he liked.

0:41:070:41:10

Before I came I wasn't sure about work and with the football team,

0:41:100:41:13

I knew nothing about it. But they were really welcoming.

0:41:130:41:16

I thoroughly enjoyed it.

0:41:160:41:19

The atmosphere added to the buzz I got when I left on that day.

0:41:190:41:24

But with friends and family so far away, the Clarks are facing a heart-wrenching decision.

0:41:240:41:31

I think we have to do what's right for our family.

0:41:310:41:34

It's no foregone conclusion yet in terms of whether it's Australia or the UK.

0:41:340:41:40

And their week down under has only reinforced for the girls what a huge step it would be for them.

0:41:400:41:46

I really would miss my dad and my friends, my best friend especially.

0:41:460:41:52

There's no doubt about it, Gabby's - "No, I'm not going."

0:41:520:41:57

When I saw the wildlife park I was like, yeah, we're definitely staying in Australia,

0:41:570:42:01

but I think I want to stay in Cardiff.

0:42:040:42:08

After a roller-coaster week of string emotions

0:42:080:42:11

it looks like the Clarks could be split on their decision to move.

0:42:110:42:14

They are voting for their future, but where will it be?

0:42:140:42:17

If the girls vote 'no' here, Ray and Gordon's hopes could be in tatters.

0:42:170:42:22

It's our final day today. We've had a bit of an up-and-down week.

0:42:220:42:26

We've looked at the lifestyles, we've looked at property, we've

0:42:260:42:29

looked at employment opportunities

0:42:290:42:31

and I think we've had some very good highs and some very low lows.

0:42:310:42:38

But overall I think our vote is going to be...

0:42:380:42:42

Australia.

0:42:450:42:47

Wow, that's a turn-up for the books.

0:42:470:42:50

You vote for Australia too!

0:42:500:42:52

Gabby and Leah weren't convinced at first they would fit

0:42:520:42:56

into a new life in Australia but in the end they saw

0:42:560:43:01

the whole family could have a happy future if the Clarks were to move where they're wanted down under.

0:43:010:43:07

Join us next time and find out what happens when another British family

0:43:070:43:12

have to decide whether to go where they're wanted down under.
