Hello and welcome to Wanted Down Under,

0:00:030:00:05

the show that catapults a British family right across

0:00:050:00:09

the other side of the world to help them make

0:00:090:00:11

the biggest decision of their life.

0:00:110:00:13

Jason and Ninu Huddlestone and baby Naia are dreaming

0:00:130:00:17

of a new life down under where they can work to live, not live to work.

0:00:170:00:22

We would like something more laid-back, and we think that Australia might provide that.

0:00:220:00:27

But the reality of house prices in Australia's most expensive city are a shock.

0:00:270:00:31

Yeah, in a way, I got my wow factor today.

0:00:310:00:34

It's just not the wow I was looking for!

0:00:340:00:36

And could they bear to leave their friends and family behind?

0:00:360:00:39

To be thinking about moving away when, you know, the family might need us...

0:00:390:00:44

So will their idea of the Australian dream tempt the Huddlestone family

0:00:440:00:49

to go where they're wanted, down under?

0:00:490:00:51

With the global economy in meltdown, perhaps now is a good time to go walkabout

0:01:160:01:20

in Australia, where at least the sun is shining.

0:01:200:01:23

Last year, over 60 Brits a day swapped the grey skies of home for the blue ones down under.

0:01:250:01:31

But how tough was that decision, and how carefully did they think it through?

0:01:310:01:36

We've put another 20 British families through their paces

0:01:370:01:41

as they face the reality of life down under.

0:01:410:01:44

After just one week, they'll have to vote, once and for all.

0:01:440:01:47

Do they stay in the UK or do they move to Australia?

0:01:470:01:51

Jason and Ninu Huddlestone and baby Naia are about to leave their home

0:01:520:01:56

in outer London to test Ninu's idea of setting up home in Australia.

0:01:560:02:01

I probably approached Jason with the question about three years ago,

0:02:010:02:05

and he was really up for it, so he said, "Oh yeah, you know, it would be really good."

0:02:050:02:09

Ninu has idyllic memories of her carefree childhood.

0:02:090:02:13

'I grew up in Kenya and I came over when I was about nine to this country.'

0:02:130:02:17

I am a sun person, and I kind of get a bit depressed when it gets quite wintry.

0:02:170:02:22

Jason enjoys his work as a software engineer, but not his daily commute negotiating London's traffic.

0:02:220:02:30

That hour-each-way drive is hard work, and it would be nice to go somewhere

0:02:300:02:34

where that wasn't the case, where we could, you know, live a lot closer to where I work.

0:02:340:02:39

He phones me to say, "Oh, I'm gonna be an hour late,"

0:02:390:02:42

or, "I don't know what time I'm gonna get home,"

0:02:420:02:45

so, to live in an area with less roads would be a great thing, or motorways that are not a car park!

0:02:450:02:52

Jason and Ninu both grew up in Feltham and both their families live nearby.

0:02:520:02:57

I have thought that they moved when we were quite young

0:02:570:03:01

to a new country, so it can be done, but you can tell that they're not very happy about the decision.

0:03:010:03:07

Baby Naia has been a great hit with her grandparents.

0:03:070:03:11

My parents have another grandchild, but Ninu's parents don't have any other grandchildren,

0:03:110:03:17

so to take Naia away from them would be pretty hard, I think.

0:03:170:03:22

And they're not sure if Feltham's the best place to bring up their children.

0:03:220:03:26

It's got its problems. Most people have heard of it because of the Feltham Young Offenders.

0:03:260:03:31

There are many different types of people round here and the diversity's increased,

0:03:310:03:35

which is good in many ways, but it does generate friction, and Ninu's had some tough times.

0:03:350:03:41

I've been spat on when I was pushing Naia in her pushchair,

0:03:410:03:45

and you don't know whether to say, "Excuse me, that was very wrong,"

0:03:450:03:49

or to just carry on because you don't want to cause any arguments.

0:03:490:03:53

-Why are all the

-BLEEP

-taking over Feltham?

0:03:530:03:56

I mean, I'm not sure if it's as prevalent in Australia as it is here,

0:03:560:04:02

but I would hope it's definitely less of a threat for families.

0:04:020:04:06

Going to a multicultural environment's very important,

0:04:060:04:09

because otherwise, we'd just go to a totally white area.

0:04:090:04:12

I mean, it could be very difficult for her to feel at home.

0:04:120:04:15

There needs to be a mixed community.

0:04:150:04:17

It'll be interesting to go and see if I do fit in as a person.

0:04:170:04:22

But how will they cope when it's just the three of them?

0:04:220:04:24

If you're suddenly alone, you're plucked away from all your friends and family,

0:04:240:04:29

all you've got is each other, so you have to pull together,

0:04:290:04:32

otherwise we ain't gonna be out there very long.

0:04:320:04:35

To help the Huddlestones make a decision that would be right for them,

0:04:370:04:41

we gave them a trial run of life in Sydney for one week.

0:04:410:04:46

We found three different lifestyles for our family to sample.

0:04:490:04:53

One in the country, one in the city and one on the coast,

0:04:530:04:57

each one with the offer of a job and a brand new way of life for them to enjoy on their budget.

0:04:570:05:03

First, let's take a look at the country lifestyle.

0:05:030:05:07

Sydney's sunny countryside is alive with exciting wildlife

0:05:080:05:12

and is perfect for anyone who loves the great outdoors.

0:05:120:05:15

With fabulous parks and plant life, there's plenty to do and see

0:05:150:05:20

and for horse lovers, rural Sydney is the place to be.

0:05:200:05:25

Country living is better value than the city.

0:05:250:05:28

For around £300,000 - £400,000, you could buy a large four-bedroom family home.

0:05:280:05:33

Gosh, you could even get a pool!

0:05:350:05:38

A software engineer at this IT programming company will take home a salary of around £40,000.

0:05:380:05:45

Supervisor Clinton is keen to meet Jason.

0:05:450:05:49

We primarily design and develop websites, so there's lots of room for creativity.

0:05:490:05:53

We've been expanding at a rapid 15% per year, so it's a very exciting time to come on board.

0:05:530:05:59

Jason, we certainly hope that you contact us as soon as you arrive in Australia.

0:05:590:06:03

So that was the kind of lifestyle they could enjoy in the country,

0:06:030:06:07

so let's see what might be possible in the city on their budget.

0:06:070:06:11

Sydney is a collision of colour and excitement

0:06:150:06:18

for kids and adults alike.

0:06:180:06:19

And if you're a fan of trendy markets, sightseeing and culture, you'll feel right at home.

0:06:210:06:28

Chilling out in a stylish, small, suburban apartment

0:06:280:06:31

will set you back around £300,000, but for designer luxury, expect to pay way over a million.

0:06:310:06:39

Well, we can dream, can't we?

0:06:390:06:41

A job as a software engineer at this IT programming company will earn Jason a salary of £50,000.

0:06:430:06:50

The MD is Joseph Serr.

0:06:500:06:53

This is our games room.

0:06:550:06:57

This is where we come when we want to relax and chill out.

0:06:570:06:59

Jason, we're always on the lookout for people of your calibre.

0:06:590:07:03

I'd like you to come and see me when you're in Sydney.

0:07:030:07:06

It looks like their lifestyle could shape up pretty well in the city,

0:07:070:07:11

but what about a new life on the coast?

0:07:110:07:13

Sydney's world famous coastline is a sight to behold.

0:07:130:07:18

And if surfing's your thing, you're going to love it here.

0:07:200:07:25

Although waterfront properties cost megabucks, a small family home

0:07:250:07:30

a short drive from the beach will set you back around £300,000.

0:07:300:07:36

An experienced software engineer at this kitchen management software company

0:07:400:07:45

could earn you a salary of £50,000.

0:07:450:07:48

Business partner Enda Hughes explains.

0:07:480:07:52

Our software design has been in operation for six years.

0:07:520:07:54

We found a niche in the market for kitchen management software.

0:07:540:07:58

If you've got a sweet tooth, you'll just love working

0:07:580:08:00

alongside their sister patisserie company.

0:08:000:08:03

Having a sister company does bring many perks.

0:08:030:08:06

Chocolate, we all share.

0:08:060:08:08

The staff do the sampling, a perk you won't get elsewhere.

0:08:080:08:11

Jason, give me a call when you get to Sydney. Look forward to seeing you.

0:08:110:08:14

All the jobs offer Jason a good salary, but have very different lifestyles attached.

0:08:170:08:22

There's the country with its wide-open spaces

0:08:220:08:26

and beautiful properties.

0:08:260:08:29

The vibrant city centre and workplace

0:08:290:08:32

where the competition's not just round the computer.

0:08:320:08:35

Or the coast, with its magnificent beaches and added perks of the job.

0:08:350:08:41

So, three very different possibilities for our family to try.

0:08:410:08:45

So which one did they think would suit them best?

0:08:450:08:48

For the Huddlestones' trial week in Australia, we chose the city option.

0:08:480:08:54

If Jason wants to spend less time travelling to work,

0:08:560:08:59

they'll need to live close to Sydney's business district.

0:08:590:09:03

After a 22-hour flight, the Huddlestones arrive in Sydney, eager to explore their accommodation.

0:09:030:09:09

They're staying in the inner-city suburb of Stanmore

0:09:090:09:13

in a three-bedroom, period brick-built home, but with a light, contemporary interior.

0:09:130:09:18

-After you.

-Wow!

0:09:180:09:20

Interesting. Nice high ceilings.

0:09:200:09:23

-It's a lovely hallway. Oh, wow.

-It's so big.

0:09:230:09:27

-Interesting.

-Interesting, yeah.

0:09:270:09:28

-It's a lot of space.

-Big table as well.

0:09:280:09:31

They're impressed with the size of it and the quirky combination of styles.

0:09:310:09:35

I reckon this is the bathroom. The echo gives it away.

0:09:350:09:39

It's a huge bathroom!

0:09:390:09:41

More rooms. How big is this place?

0:09:410:09:43

-It's a nice-sized room. It's a bigger bed.

-Lots of wardrobe space.

0:09:430:09:46

All the comforts of home. There's even a larder.

0:09:460:09:50

We could have a larder!

0:09:500:09:52

But what's that noise?

0:09:520:09:54

Planes.

0:09:560:09:58

Just like back at home!

0:09:580:10:00

Jason seems to be putting on a brave face about such an intrusion.

0:10:000:10:04

Planes, we're used to that. I've lived under a flightpath all my life, it's no big deal.

0:10:040:10:08

-We'd like to move away from planes!

-Yeah, it would be nice.

0:10:080:10:11

I think from my point of view, an Australian home was more new.

0:10:110:10:15

-Yeah, more modern.

-Yeah, a more modern, suburban type property,

0:10:150:10:20

-so this is really different.

-Something with this space, though, fantastic.

0:10:200:10:24

Something with this space would be great.

0:10:240:10:26

With the flight behind them and the unpacking ahead, they're really feeling just how far they've come.

0:10:260:10:34

The flight was hard work. You can't do that trip often. It would kill you.

0:10:340:10:37

I think it made me think more about my family while I was on the plane.

0:10:370:10:41

Yeah, if you are to come here, you know you're not gonna see your family

0:10:410:10:45

-more than probably once a year, sort of thing.

-The distance is...

0:10:450:10:49

-Massive!

-Massive, yeah.

0:10:490:10:51

-We realise now that it's not an easy journey.

-No, definitely not.

-No.

0:10:510:10:57

Is Ninu already having second thoughts?

0:10:570:11:00

I am very attached to my parents, my sister and brother, and I think for me it would be more, more questions

0:11:000:11:07

and a bit of soul-searching for me, whereas I think for Jason,

0:11:070:11:10

it would be a lot easier for him to say, you know, "I love it, let's go!"

0:11:100:11:14

-Or not, depending which way it goes.

-Or not!

0:11:140:11:17

One of the deciding factors on making the move down under will be finding that house of their dreams.

0:11:170:11:23

I want to have a wow factor when I see a house.

0:11:230:11:26

It's that sense that you walk into a home

0:11:260:11:29

and it just really impresses you.

0:11:290:11:31

To get that in the UK, you have to spend so much, we hope we might

0:11:310:11:34

be able to get something like that for a little less over here.

0:11:340:11:38

In the UK, the Huddlestones live in Middlesex, a great location if you want to catch a plane.

0:11:420:11:47

Their home is a modern three-bedroom house in a gated cul-de-sac, but they dream of a more spacious

0:11:470:11:53

house in Australia with a big garden for their growing family.

0:11:530:11:57

Jason wants to reduce his commuting time to work, so we've lined up three houses for them to view

0:12:000:12:05

in Sydney's inner west, all within easy access of the city centre.

0:12:050:12:09

The Huddlestones' budget of £250,000, roughly 500,000, is a start.

0:12:110:12:17

But for a house close to the city, they'll still need to take out a mortgage.

0:12:170:12:23

Property one is in the popular suburb of Croydon, just a 10-minute train ride into the city.

0:12:230:12:29

Estate agent Peter Hearnfield is there to greet them.

0:12:290:12:33

It's a three-bedroom family home.

0:12:330:12:36

It's on 351 square metres, so it's actually quite a good size block.

0:12:360:12:40

It's going to auction and we're thinking it'll probably sell

0:12:400:12:42

something above 750,000.

0:12:420:12:45

-Very quiet, isn't it? It's really nice.

-It's a great location.

0:12:450:12:47

And there's no planes over here.

0:12:470:12:50

-Yes!

-Great!

-Definite bonus.

-Peace and quiet on the outside.

0:12:500:12:53

Let's have a look inside.

0:12:530:12:55

-Right, then.

-Wow! It's old.

0:13:070:13:09

It's got high ceilings again, hasn't it?

0:13:090:13:11

It's not a main bedroom. It would be a good spare bedroom for guests.

0:13:110:13:15

-Spare bedroom.

-It'd need a lot of work, though.

0:13:150:13:18

A bit colourful. Green walls.

0:13:180:13:20

Yeah, again, it would have to be totally redone, wouldn't it?

0:13:200:13:24

Mmm. Is Ninu having difficulty seeing beyond the dated interior?

0:13:240:13:28

-There's lots of cracks and...

-Yeah. The whole house would need renovating.

0:13:280:13:32

-Oh, it's the dining room.

-Yeah.

0:13:320:13:34

-The kitchen.

-Now I'm transported!

0:13:340:13:36

-Yeah.

-Back to...

-We're in a museum, aren't we?

-We are.

0:13:360:13:39

All the fixtures, fittings, everything would have to go. Have to start again.

0:13:390:13:43

-But can Jason see its potential?

-This is quite nice, isn't it?

0:13:430:13:47

-This would be a nice spot to drink a glass of wine, wouldn't it, in the evening?

-Yeah.

-Pleasant.

-Yeah.

0:13:470:13:52

-This is a bit bigger than our place at home.

-Yeah.

0:13:520:13:55

And what about the price?

0:13:550:13:57

The pricing's quite expensive, actually. £325,000.

0:13:570:14:00

The house has potential.

0:14:000:14:01

-I mean, you can probably re-plaster, repaint, new kitchen, new bathroom, new flooring.

-New everything.

0:14:010:14:09

Even though I can imagine it, I don't think it's a project that we would take on, yeah.

0:14:090:14:14

Yeah, in a way, I got my wow factor today.

0:14:140:14:16

It's just not the wow I was looking for!

0:14:160:14:18

Sort of an anti-wow, maybe, I don't know.

0:14:180:14:21

Jason is anxious to discover why it's so expensive.

0:14:210:14:25

Three bedrooms, needs some work, but the position is very good.

0:14:250:14:28

It's highly sought-after because you've got some very good primary schools in the area.

0:14:280:14:32

Only three minutes' walk to Croydon station. That takes you directly to the city.

0:14:320:14:36

I've got a few others I could show you.

0:14:360:14:39

-Would you be interested?

-Definitely.

0:14:390:14:41

Property number two is more their style.

0:14:410:14:44

We had an offer of 720,000 on this one.

0:14:440:14:47

The price is different because we're further

0:14:470:14:49

from the station and it's a smaller block. But it's a beautiful home.

0:14:490:14:53

720,000 will buy it for you today, if you like it.

0:14:530:14:55

So have a look through and maybe tell me what you think.

0:14:550:14:59

No pressure, then! But it is slightly cheaper than the first house. About £360,000.

0:15:000:15:07

And, hooray! The renovations on this property have already been done.

0:15:070:15:11

Guest bedroom, I suppose.

0:15:110:15:13

Oh, bathroom is still quite small, but it's in much better condition than the other one.

0:15:130:15:18

It might be small, but there's a big surprise round the corner.

0:15:180:15:22

Oh, this is nice. I like this.

0:15:220:15:24

Oh, wow! Yeah, this is nice.

0:15:240:15:26

This is unexpected.

0:15:260:15:28

Oh, wow! Oh, that's huge. Oh, excellent.

0:15:280:15:31

-Oh, this is much more like it, isn't it?

-This is wow factor.

0:15:310:15:34

This is much more wow factor, definitely. Shall we have a look at the garden?

0:15:340:15:38

It's a nice garden.

0:15:380:15:40

That's really nice. It's really well done, isn't it?

0:15:400:15:43

-So what you think about it compared the other one?

-So much better. And it's cheaper.

0:15:430:15:48

It has definitely got the wow factor.

0:15:480:15:52

So, has our estate agent got a deal on his hands?

0:15:520:15:55

Jason, Ninu, what did you think?

0:15:550:15:57

-Oh, it's much nicer, isn't it?

-It's different, isn't it?

0:15:570:16:00

-Much more what we're looking for.

-Why is this house cheaper than the last one?

0:16:000:16:04

It is cheaper because you're further away from the station.

0:16:040:16:08

The station does sort of indicate a higher price, because it's more accessible to the station.

0:16:080:16:12

Quicker time to and from the station.

0:16:120:16:14

They really liked this house, but it's still a period property.

0:16:140:16:18

Could they compromise and give up their dreams of a modern new build?

0:16:180:16:23

The third house has been renovated inside and out and is the biggest of the three properties.

0:16:230:16:29

-I'm Shelly.

-Nice to meet you. Jason.

-Ninu.

0:16:290:16:32

What we have here is a Federation home. Four bedrooms.

0:16:320:16:36

We do have a slight noise problem. It is a main road.

0:16:360:16:39

But what the vendors have done is enclosed the balcony to reduce that noise level.

0:16:390:16:44

-How much is it on the market?

-700,000 plus.

0:16:440:16:47

-Have a look around and we'll chat afterwards.

-Thanks very much.

-Thanks.

0:16:470:16:51

Jason and Ninu seem a little taken aback

0:16:510:16:55

by the £350,000 asking price. Will they think it's worth it?

0:16:550:17:01

-A-ha! Bedroom.

-Yeah.

0:17:010:17:03

-It's a big room.

-It is, isn't it?

0:17:030:17:04

It's got a fireplace as well. Excellent.

0:17:040:17:07

Nice space.

0:17:070:17:09

Yeah. Interesting sort of design.

0:17:090:17:11

The little arches and stuff.

0:17:110:17:13

I reckon this is a baby's room.

0:17:140:17:17

-Good size for a children's bedroom.

-Definitely.

0:17:170:17:19

That is interesting, isn't it?

0:17:190:17:21

Oh, wow! I've never seen a bathroom like this.

0:17:210:17:24

Ah, now this sounds a bit more hopeful.

0:17:240:17:27

Could this stylishly renovated house with rooms that just go on and on be closer to their dream home?

0:17:270:17:32

-Fantastic.

-Nice space. Lovely, open space.

0:17:320:17:36

Floorboards, that's good.

0:17:360:17:39

-Dark wood.

-Air con.

-Nice kitchen.

0:17:390:17:42

-Garden.

-This would be lovely in the summer, wouldn't it?

0:17:420:17:44

That's a good space, isn't it?

0:17:440:17:48

Barbecue spot.

0:17:480:17:49

-Nice glass of wine.

-Lovely garden.

0:17:490:17:53

-Maybe it is what they're looking for.

-So, what did you think?

0:17:530:17:57

Not quite what we're looking for.

0:17:570:17:59

-The main road out the front is a real issue for us.

-OK.

0:17:590:18:01

If you're looking to buy in the western suburbs of Sydney,

0:18:010:18:05

you're either going to get planes, trains or automobiles.

0:18:050:18:08

The aircraft noise isn't an issue here, but yes, we do have the main road.

0:18:080:18:12

How long to get to the middle of Sydney?

0:18:120:18:14

You know, you're looking at eight minutes.

0:18:140:18:17

You're central to pretty much everything. 20 minutes from the beaches. It's very multicultural.

0:18:170:18:22

Would we assume that new builds would be more expensive?

0:18:220:18:25

The newer buildings, the more contemporary, aren't as popular,

0:18:250:18:30

and for whatever reason, they're not as solid.

0:18:300:18:33

You know, they don't make 'em like they used to!

0:18:330:18:36

So, have the Huddlestones been won over by the older style properties in Sydney's inner west?

0:18:360:18:43

The first was a three-bedroom bungalow, but it was almost a museum piece in need of a total renovation.

0:18:430:18:51

The second house was another three-bedroom period property, but with a striking modern interior.

0:18:510:18:58

The last house was the biggest, with four bedrooms, but an old style property and on a busy main road.

0:18:580:19:04

So, how will they vote on property?

0:19:040:19:06

The UK or Oz?

0:19:060:19:08

Little disappointed by what we've seen.

0:19:080:19:10

Not what we expected,

0:19:100:19:11

so my vote on property, based on what we've seen is most definitely...

0:19:110:19:16

UK.

0:19:160:19:17

My vote for properties we've seen is...

0:19:170:19:21

UK.

0:19:210:19:23

Well, not a great start.

0:19:230:19:25

Jason and Ninu have obviously not been won over by these traditional style Sydney houses.

0:19:250:19:33

The Federation style is interesting, but it's not really to our taste.

0:19:330:19:37

Initially, I expected the houses to be slightly bigger.

0:19:370:19:40

If we can't get the house we want, I would rather have a nice house

0:19:400:19:44

and commute a long way than commute a short distance and live in a place I don't like.

0:19:440:19:47

It's not value for money here.

0:19:470:19:49

With the high cost of houses in central Sydney, the Huddlestones may have to look further afield,

0:19:520:19:58

or pay a lot more if they want a modern house.

0:19:580:20:01

So there's a lot of pressure on Jason to find a suitable job to help him support Ninu and Naia.

0:20:010:20:07

He's spending the day with an IT company in North Sydney,

0:20:100:20:12

to compare his work in the UK with how it could be down under.

0:20:120:20:17

Jason is an experienced computer software engineer.

0:20:170:20:20

They're very much in demand in Australia.

0:20:200:20:23

Still, he's keen to impress the boss, Joseph Serr.

0:20:230:20:26

-So, can you tell us a little bit more about yourself?

-Well, I'm 34 years old.

0:20:260:20:31

My wife and I are looking to move to Australia for what we hope is a better life.

0:20:310:20:35

In London, it is pretty hectic.

0:20:350:20:37

It's very work-centric. I think we would like something

0:20:370:20:40

a little more laid-back and we think that Australia might provide that.

0:20:400:20:44

I think you're on the right track, in terms of the balance.

0:20:440:20:47

We try very hard here to get a balance.

0:20:470:20:50

We've got sports rooms and that sort of thing.

0:20:500:20:53

Although it's not a big company, we do really focus on other issues, other than work.

0:20:530:20:58

So, here, you'll find we work a 40-hour week.

0:20:580:21:02

For the sort of experience that you've got and your age,

0:21:020:21:06

we would probably be looking at around about 100,000 a year.

0:21:060:21:10

That's nearly £50,000 - £8,000 more than he earns in the UK.

0:21:100:21:16

All right, Jason. What I think we'll do now is just show you around.

0:21:160:21:21

While Jason gets to work, Ninu's on a mission.

0:21:240:21:27

If they move to Australia, she and Naia will have a lot of time to fill.

0:21:270:21:32

So Ninu's come to Bondi Beach to join a local music playgroup.

0:21:320:21:37

OK, guys. I just want to introduce you to Ninu with Naia.

0:21:370:21:41

-Today, she's going to be sitting in to the class.

-Hello, everyone.

0:21:410:21:44

Yes, Ninu, I remember. It's like your first day at school.

0:21:490:21:53

-We've got quite a full day here today.

-Back at work, Jason gets the grand tour.

0:21:550:21:59

This is where you would be sitting.

0:21:590:22:01

-Piece de resistance, which is our games room.

-Fantastic.

0:22:010:22:05

This is where the guys come every couple of hours and take it out on a ping-pong ball.

0:22:050:22:10

Fairly fixed in their position all day, so being able to come here

0:22:100:22:13

and belt the ball around is just the right tonic.

0:22:130:22:16

-So I hope you're good at ping-pong.

-Rubbish, but I can learn!

0:22:160:22:20

-Dan, this is Jason.

-Nice to meet you, Dan.

0:22:200:22:22

Dan can show you a bit of what we do.

0:22:220:22:24

So, we primarily use FileMaker for a lot of the database work here.

0:22:240:22:28

Now, while we leave Jason to the intricacies of File... whatever it is,

0:22:280:22:32

has Ninu settled into her first day?

0:22:320:22:36

# Hello everybody, hello everybody

0:22:390:22:41

# It is good to see you. #

0:22:410:22:43

THEY CLAP AND CHEER

0:22:450:22:47

This is the first time Naia's seen so many babies.

0:22:480:22:52

For a week.

0:22:520:22:53

The lifestyle, the beach and it's beautiful.

0:22:530:22:56

If your husband is working hard or you're working hard, it's like

0:22:560:23:00

being on holiday on the weekends, because it's just beautiful.

0:23:000:23:03

Being by the water is so lovely.

0:23:030:23:05

And you see whales. I see whales and dolphins.

0:23:050:23:07

Goodbye. Nice to meet you.

0:23:090:23:11

'Sunny, beautiful summer's day.

0:23:110:23:14

'I can't imagine every day being like this.

0:23:140:23:17

'The main difference I've found was this was more laid-back than the UK.

0:23:170:23:21

'Meeting the mums here was great.

0:23:210:23:23

'They were really welcoming and open and friendly.'

0:23:230:23:26

I was a bit surprised by that. I thought I would be the newcomer,

0:23:260:23:31

they'd be a bit distant, but they were great.

0:23:310:23:33

They were like I had been friends with them for years now!

0:23:330:23:37

Meanwhile, back at the office...

0:23:370:23:39

Ah, I see.

0:23:400:23:42

Talk about a relaxed working environment!

0:23:450:23:47

It certainly seems to be working for this company.

0:23:470:23:50

I think the major difference there was their working culture was a bit more laid-back.

0:24:010:24:05

You could see from the games that we were playing

0:24:050:24:09

that it was more fun, I suppose.

0:24:090:24:10

I mean, we wouldn't do anything like that back at home.

0:24:100:24:13

From what Joseph said, there's a skills shortage of my skill set at the moment,

0:24:130:24:17

which is obviously good for me. So I could perhaps demand a higher salary than I'm on at the moment.

0:24:170:24:23

Work is the primary factor when moving to Australia, because without work, you can't do anything else.

0:24:230:24:29

You need the money to have the lifestyle you want, to get a nice house.

0:24:290:24:33

Without a good job, you can't get any of that.

0:24:330:24:36

So it's all about the work, from my point of view.

0:24:360:24:39

So, how will Jason vote for work? UK or Australia?

0:24:390:24:42

It's very difficult to actually choose between the UK and Australia,

0:24:420:24:46

but I suppose, the one thing that was different, which is the fun factor, I will have to make my vote for...

0:24:460:24:53

Australia.

0:24:530:24:55

These days, Australian cuisine has the reputation to rival anywhere

0:24:590:25:03

in the world, and nowhere more so than in the restaurants in Sydney.

0:25:030:25:07

We found out what's hot and what's not on the menu.

0:25:070:25:10

Sydney stands alone as one of the food capitals of the world.

0:25:100:25:14

It does its own thing. It does some really great food,

0:25:140:25:17

which brings together a lot of food styles from around the world

0:25:170:25:21

that reflects the people who live here, the chefs who work here.

0:25:210:25:24

They come from Indonesia, they come from Ireland, they come from America,

0:25:240:25:28

they come from Thailand. It's fantastic, because you can see

0:25:280:25:32

that they can bring different types of skill.

0:25:320:25:34

The surge of migrants means that Sydney's food scene is now ranked within the top 10 in the world.

0:25:340:25:41

A lot of people who've moved here, they've gone looking for the things

0:25:410:25:45

they had back home, not found it, so started growing it.

0:25:450:25:48

What we see down here is the freshness, the availability, the sunny country.

0:25:480:25:54

It's really the best place to be a chef, because we have beautiful produce from the sea,

0:25:540:25:59

we have beautiful produce from the land, and really, there's nothing better for a chef to work with.

0:25:590:26:04

A lot of the styles of food, like Thai food, Vietnamese food,

0:26:040:26:08

is really quite relatively cheap, so you will eat out because you just don't feel like cooking.

0:26:080:26:14

Anyone interested in food really should come to Sydney,

0:26:140:26:18

because it's a great place to come and eat.

0:26:180:26:20

Jason and Ninu Huddlestone and baby Naia from Middlesex want a bit of

0:26:240:26:27

the laid-back Aussie lifestyle with less of a commute to work for Jason.

0:26:270:26:33

That hour-each-way drive is hard work.

0:26:330:26:35

It would be nice to go somewhere where that wasn't the case.

0:26:350:26:39

They hope they'll get more for their money, but the older properties in Sydney were a huge disappointment.

0:26:390:26:44

Initially, I expected the houses to be slightly bigger.

0:26:440:26:47

I think all houses have been quite small, compared to our expectations.

0:26:470:26:52

At work, Jason experienced the Aussies' chilled-out attitude first hand.

0:26:520:26:57

But how will they cope with leaving friends and family behind?

0:26:570:27:00

You know, the family might need us.

0:27:000:27:02

Yeah, I think that's the most difficult.

0:27:020:27:05

The Huddlestones are keen to swap the hurly-burly of life

0:27:080:27:11

in outer London for a more sedate way of doing things in Australia.

0:27:110:27:15

For instance - climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

0:27:150:27:19

Leaving Naia with a child minder, their tour guide, Adam, fills them in on Sydney's landmarks.

0:27:230:27:30

Is that a little fort or something in the middle? What's that?

0:27:300:27:33

It is, yeah. That is called Fort Denison,

0:27:330:27:35

a defence system we used to use in the early days of Sydney.

0:27:350:27:38

In case we're going to be attacked from anyone, we built the fort

0:27:380:27:42

to make sure we could protect Sydney, protect its early settlers.

0:27:420:27:46

Wow! Talk about outdoor living.

0:27:480:27:50

-How high are we now?

-Round about the halfway mark, so I'd say about 80 metres above sea level.

0:27:500:27:55

Even up here, they're still looking for their dream home.

0:27:550:27:59

They want a bigger house, but maybe they're thinking too big.

0:27:590:28:03

That's called Admiralty House. It's where the Governor General of Australia lives,

0:28:030:28:07

so, obviously, very secure. That's the Prime Minister's residence there as well.

0:28:070:28:12

You're really in the midst of some of the hierarchy of Australia right there.

0:28:120:28:16

The higher they go, the more they realise just how vast Sydney is and what it could offer.

0:28:170:28:24

Amazing!

0:28:240:28:26

Well, we're on top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge and it's absolutely fantastic. You can see everything.

0:28:300:28:36

The entire harbour here.

0:28:360:28:38

You start to really get a feel of the size of the city and how it's just sprawled out for miles and miles

0:28:380:28:44

and miles all way across to the blue mountains in the distance. It's an amazing view.

0:28:440:28:48

Yeah, and what's also great is you can see how close the beaches are.

0:28:480:28:52

So, Bondi and Manly Beach.

0:28:520:28:55

It's got all the landmarks that you expect to see. I mean, you're on one of the big landmarks.

0:28:550:28:59

The opera house over there and the harbour stretching out in front of you.

0:28:590:29:03

-So it's exactly what you wanted to see.

-It's beautiful.

0:29:030:29:06

With their feet firmly back on the ground, do they think Sydney

0:29:110:29:15

can offer them the way of life they're looking for?

0:29:150:29:18

Sydney offers just as much, if not more, than London.

0:29:180:29:21

And with the fantastic experience we had this morning, as well,

0:29:210:29:25

it's clearly got a lot to offer on the lifestyle side of things.

0:29:250:29:29

From what I've seen at the top of the bridge, Sydney is vast and it has parks and bushland.

0:29:290:29:35

I think, yeah, compared to England, the weather will just be fantastic.

0:29:350:29:40

Well, yeah, it's spring now and it feels about 20 degrees.

0:29:400:29:44

It's lovely and sunny and you wouldn't get that in the UK, so I can't imagine what summer's like!

0:29:440:29:48

I think it has lifted the kind of disappointment that we felt initially regarding Sydney.

0:29:480:29:54

Yeah, it makes life feel a little better.

0:29:540:29:57

Ninu and Jason have been won over by the beauty of the harbour,

0:29:580:30:02

but if they have to live and the outer suburbs, all this won't be on their doorstep.

0:30:020:30:06

So, how will they vote on the Australian lifestyle?

0:30:060:30:09

Comparing Australian lifestyle and family activities to the UK, I choose...

0:30:090:30:16

Australia.

0:30:160:30:18

And my vote is...

0:30:180:30:20

Australia.

0:30:200:30:21

Jason and Ninu would both struggle to cut family ties in the UK.

0:30:270:30:32

If they were to emigrate to Australia, they'd have to be sure

0:30:320:30:35

they'd find a new social circle of friends to alleviate their loss.

0:30:350:30:40

Finding a shared interest is a start.

0:30:400:30:42

So Jason and Ninu have come to a wine-tasting class.

0:30:420:30:46

And who better to introduce them to Australian wine than Stefan?

0:30:460:30:51

He's what Aussies call a Fraussie.

0:30:510:30:54

From England!

0:30:540:30:56

-That's a French-Australian to you and me.

-Thank you very much.

0:30:560:31:02

What I'll do, just to crack the first bottle of wine and let's get started. Be right back!

0:31:020:31:07

THEY CHAT

0:31:090:31:11

I have been here for 15 years, and I didn't know about Australian wine before.

0:31:130:31:17

A lot of people says, "Oh, what do you reckon about the Aussie wine, compared to the French wine?"

0:31:170:31:22

Very, very hard to compare them.

0:31:220:31:24

I am an Aussie as well. I should say my son is a little Fraussie.

0:31:240:31:29

Anyway, now, on the first nose, very fresh.

0:31:290:31:33

Four words to describe wine.

0:31:330:31:36

Fun, friends, love, passion. If you don't like it, leave it.

0:31:360:31:41

It doesn't matter, we will go to the next.

0:31:410:31:43

Be objective and have fun. Very, very important.

0:31:430:31:46

-I love the fact that with wine, there's no such thing as a right or wrong opinion.

-Of course not.

0:31:460:31:53

It's about what you like and about what you want to eat it with.

0:31:530:31:56

Put your nose into it and tell me what you think.

0:31:560:31:59

As I said before, everyone has got five senses. A woman has got six, especially Ninu.

0:31:590:32:05

Now, guys, how do you like that?

0:32:050:32:08

Strong, citrussy and sweet.

0:32:080:32:11

Sweet? It is like, in the end of it, citrussy, definitely.

0:32:110:32:16

You're absolutely right.

0:32:160:32:18

You see, on one nose, it goes, "Oh, my God!"

0:32:180:32:22

You have got memories coming out. I remember,

0:32:220:32:25

10 years ago, I lost my father, and my father used to have Chablis.

0:32:250:32:30

Chablis, Chardonnay-based.

0:32:300:32:32

When I put a Chablis on my nose, I think about him.

0:32:320:32:36

So, it's more the story behind it.

0:32:360:32:39

Let's get to the next.

0:32:390:32:41

Oh, you can't beat the French for romance.

0:32:410:32:45

As the wine continues to flow, what did Jason and Ninu think

0:32:450:32:49

about the idea of making friends over a glass or two?

0:32:490:32:52

Or is that three, Jason?

0:32:520:32:55

The combination of the jet lag, the lack of sleep because of the baby waking us up at 4.15am

0:32:550:33:02

and three glasses of wine or however much, I'm feeling pretty good at the moment, actually, yeah.

0:33:020:33:07

The people are very friendly, they're very keen to share their thoughts

0:33:070:33:11

and they are generally really happy, friendly people.

0:33:110:33:15

Initially, I was quite apprehensive about not making friends, being quite lonely,

0:33:150:33:21

but by doing an activity like this, it has opened our eyes up that we can make friends.

0:33:210:33:26

Even just walking around in the street, people are actually not afraid to look at you.

0:33:260:33:31

In London, you're not even allowed to make eye contact, almost, with people.

0:33:310:33:36

-It's all very confrontational.

-For the stage of life that we are at, raising a young family,

0:33:360:33:41

it probably is a better place to be than back home.

0:33:410:33:45

Is there no end to the Australian hospitality?

0:33:460:33:49

We'll drink it now.

0:33:490:33:51

If you put it one more year in your cellar, what's the use?

0:33:510:33:55

No, the point is it's ready to drink. That's my philosophy on wine.

0:33:550:33:59

When it's ready, drink it.

0:33:590:34:02

I am so happy for you guys,

0:34:020:34:05

you have just arrived in Australia and I am giving you that pleasure.

0:34:050:34:10

I love giving not only one person pleasure, I love giving 200 person pleasure.

0:34:100:34:15

And we're nearly neighbours!

0:34:150:34:17

I am from Dieppe!

0:34:170:34:19

That's pretty close.

0:34:190:34:21

-Chin-chin!

-Chin chin! Thanks, mate.

-Cheers, mate.

0:34:210:34:26

Sorry to put an end to all this jollity, but it's time to vote on making friends.

0:34:280:34:33

For the potential of making friends in Australia I vote...

0:34:330:34:37

Australia.

0:34:370:34:38

Most Australians we've met so far been very friendly, so I've no doubt that we could make friends

0:34:380:34:43

over here, so my vote for making friends in Australia is most definitely...

0:34:430:34:48

Oz.

0:34:480:34:50

As the end of their week draws near, Ninu and Jason reflect on their life-changing decision.

0:34:500:34:56

We almost offended the estate agents we spoke to when we said

0:34:560:34:59

we don't like Federation, the older style of housing that's all over Sydney.

0:34:590:35:04

We didn't know that in Sydney that was the type of house that was

0:35:040:35:07

sought after and it was, you know, the most expensive sort of type.

0:35:070:35:11

The more Federation elements you had in your house, the better.

0:35:110:35:15

It's a bit of surprise, actually, because we expected something significantly more

0:35:150:35:19

than what we think we've already got back in the UK, and I don't think we saw that.

0:35:190:35:24

It was and is still surprising that Sydney is so expensive

0:35:240:35:27

and to afford the house we would like, our dream house, is probably not within our budget.

0:35:270:35:32

Certainly, if we moved to Sydney, we would be downsizing,

0:35:320:35:38

which is a bit of a disappointment.

0:35:380:35:42

With the work side of things, it was a nice surprise in that they seem to have a lot more fun,

0:35:420:35:46

or at least tried to have more fun than the work environment that I'm in.

0:35:460:35:50

Hopefully nobody at work sees that bit, but I'm sure they'll understand.

0:35:500:35:53

Australia is a lovely place to be. Sydney is a wonderful city.

0:35:530:35:57

It's lots of fun, everyone seemed really laid-back and friendly,

0:35:570:36:00

because we have heard that some parts of Australia can be slightly racist.

0:36:000:36:06

And we didn't see any of that in Sydney.

0:36:060:36:08

It was, every culture, big pot of everybody just getting on with it

0:36:080:36:13

and being friendly, happy and getting on with their jobs.

0:36:130:36:16

There might still be areas on outskirts that are not so sort of multicultural,

0:36:160:36:20

but I don't think I'm too worried now, having been, so...

0:36:200:36:24

A decision, I don't think, is any clearer in my head as to what we're going to do.

0:36:240:36:29

If you're trying to set up home, you need to find a house you love,

0:36:290:36:35

and until you find that, it is very difficult to have any serious thought of coming.

0:36:350:36:39

I don't know how to make this decision, to be honest.

0:36:390:36:42

It's going to be hard. It's going to be very hard.

0:36:420:36:45

However friendly the locals, the fact remains, they could never replace family entirely.

0:36:490:36:54

We showed the Huddlestones some messages from their loved ones back home.

0:36:540:36:58

First up are Ninu's mother and father, who has recently been unwell.

0:36:580:37:03

-Ready, then?

-OK.

0:37:050:37:08

Hello, Jason. Hello, Ninu. Hello, Naia.

0:37:100:37:13

Me and Ninu have a really good relationship

0:37:130:37:16

and we can be very open with each other and very honest.

0:37:160:37:21

She is a very caring older sister.

0:37:210:37:23

-Ninu is delightful.

-Yes.

-She's a lovely girl.

0:37:230:37:26

And now she's given us a little granddaughter, which I think is an absolute miniature Ninu.

0:37:260:37:32

-She's gorgeous!

-Ninu is a brilliant, brilliant sort of girl.

0:37:320:37:39

And she is a lively person, you know.

0:37:390:37:43

She is very hard-working, yeah.

0:37:430:37:46

And we think whatever she pursues in life, she is definitely going to make it a success.

0:37:460:37:52

Naia's made a huge difference to our family.

0:37:520:37:55

She's probably the best thing the family has got at the moment.

0:37:550:37:59

Naia's a very cute girl.

0:37:590:38:03

Small little cutie thing.

0:38:030:38:05

She was very, very excited,

0:38:050:38:07

but I was feeling kind of, oh, you know, I am sad.

0:38:070:38:10

-I don't really want her to go.

-I was really angry, actually.

0:38:100:38:14

For purely selfish reasons.

0:38:140:38:16

I was like, "How could you consider leaving me and the family?"

0:38:160:38:22

If, in Sydney, they could meet or make friends with other cultures,

0:38:220:38:29

it would be better for Naia, because we would like her to be brought up in a society where

0:38:290:38:36

it's not just only whites or Indians, but it's multicultural.

0:38:360:38:41

It is very difficult when you go to another country and you start from fresh, you know.

0:38:410:38:48

And you have to build up new friendships.

0:38:480:38:52

It's gonna be hard. I know, because I have been through this.

0:38:520:38:55

I'd just miss not being able to see my son mature

0:38:550:39:02

and I shall just miss not being able to watch Naia grow.

0:39:020:39:07

Considering our family situation with my dad's health, it is a difficult situation.

0:39:070:39:14

I have to be honest.

0:39:140:39:15

In my heart, I would like to say to them, "Please don't go,

0:39:150:39:19

"because we're going to miss you and we'd like you to be here."

0:39:190:39:23

But I have no right to do that.

0:39:230:39:25

It's not happened.

0:39:250:39:27

And until it does, you don't really know exactly how you're going to cope with it.

0:39:270:39:31

But so far, we've coped with everything that has come along and I think we'd cope with that.

0:39:310:39:37

Well, we'd have to, wouldn't we?

0:39:370:39:39

You know, you're such a good emotional support for me

0:39:390:39:42

and I think this'll just force me to grow up a bit.

0:39:420:39:45

I do hope you enjoy your time over there.

0:39:450:39:48

I hope you enjoy all the experiences...

0:39:480:39:50

and I'm getting emotional!

0:39:500:39:52

-We want you to know that we love you.

-Yes.

0:39:520:39:55

So, bye for now, and take care,

0:39:550:39:59

-and remember, we love you.

-And see you soon.

0:39:590:40:02

See you soon, yeah.

0:40:020:40:03

Mentioning my dad's sort of ill health at the moment...

0:40:130:40:15

Yeah I think...

0:40:150:40:21

to be sort of thinking about being away

0:40:210:40:25

or moving away when perhaps,

0:40:250:40:27

you know, the family might need us...

0:40:270:40:32

Yeah, I think that's the most difficult...

0:40:320:40:34

Almost, in their hearts, they're almost letting go already,

0:40:340:40:40

and we haven't even made our decision yet,

0:40:400:40:42

so that makes it quite, erm, hard to see.

0:40:420:40:46

They're full of love for us and us for them.

0:40:460:40:51

-So we wish we could just bring them with us.

-Yes, it's...

0:40:510:40:54

The distance is too great. You can't just suddenly do a halfway house on this.

0:40:540:40:59

You go and you leave them behind and you may see them once, maybe twice a year at most.

0:40:590:41:04

The more I think about it, the more I don't like that idea.

0:41:070:41:10

-No, it's not a nice idea.

-No.

0:41:100:41:12

It's the end of their trial week in Sydney and the Huddlestones have packed a lot in.

0:41:150:41:19

They've hit the heights...

0:41:190:41:21

Now I'm at the top, it feels amazing.

0:41:230:41:25

..and the lows.

0:41:250:41:26

It's old. It is totally not us.

0:41:260:41:29

They're looking for some peace and quiet.

0:41:290:41:32

Planes.

0:41:320:41:34

Just like back at home!

0:41:340:41:35

Jason's scored at work with the salary and the fun factor.

0:41:350:41:40

But for Ninu, leaving her family would be the hardest thing she's ever done.

0:41:430:41:48

To be thinking about moving away when, you know, the family might need us...

0:41:480:41:53

So, will their dream of a new life on the other side of the world

0:41:530:41:56

be dashed by the pull of friends and family back home?

0:41:560:42:00

It's time for the final vote.

0:42:000:42:02

Will they choose to stay in the UK or move to Australia?

0:42:020:42:06

I think, at this stage,

0:42:060:42:09

it hasn't quite been what I was hoping for and therefore,

0:42:090:42:14

for my life, in the future, I will have to...

0:42:140:42:18

stay with the UK.

0:42:180:42:20

For now, if I really, really had to think about which country I need

0:42:200:42:24

to pick after my just one week in Sydney, I'd have to say...

0:42:240:42:29

UK.

0:42:290:42:30

Sorry!

0:42:340:42:36

I haven't found a house. It's as simple as that.

0:42:380:42:41

Sydney just wasn't quite all that I wanted, because of the house.

0:42:410:42:46

For me, I am completely shocked today that I would prefer

0:42:460:42:51

to stay at home, but it is purely because of family.

0:42:510:42:55

With so many things to consider, this has been the biggest challenge of their lives.

0:42:550:43:03

Despite being disappointed at the type of properties they could afford,

0:43:030:43:07

the Huddlestones found life in Australia very much to their taste.

0:43:070:43:12

But in the end, the pull of family and friends proved too much,

0:43:120:43:16

and it seems they won't be moving where they're wanted, down under.
