For most families, moving to the other side of the world

0:45:020:45:05

is a once-in-a-lifetime decision,

0:45:050:45:07

but what if you've done it before only for things to end in disaster?

0:45:070:45:12

Would you be willing to risk everything

0:45:120:45:15

and make the move all over again?

0:45:150:45:18

Last time the Wallaces tried to emigrate,

0:45:180:45:21

it almost destroyed the family.

0:45:210:45:23

'We came back, we were arguing a lot'

0:45:230:45:25

and, um, I decided to divorce Ben.

0:45:250:45:30

Making a new start down under will mean facing some tough memories.

0:45:300:45:34

I'm just hoping that things ARE going to be different.

0:45:340:45:37

Ben hopefully has grown up a little bit more.

0:45:370:45:40

I want to be by the beach and I want to go surfing when I can basically.

0:45:400:45:44

Not when I'm allowed to.

0:45:440:45:46

With so much at stake, will it be the biggest gamble of their lives?

0:45:460:45:51

-I don't want anything to go wrong this time.

-Come on.

0:45:520:45:56

Australia's sunny climate and miles of beautiful coastline

0:46:210:46:25

have long been a draw for Brits looking for a new start abroad.

0:46:250:46:29

For most families, emigrating is a once-in-a-lifetime event,

0:46:300:46:34

but sometimes, the promise of a better life is so strong

0:46:340:46:38

that it can tempt you to risk everything for another bite of the cherry.

0:46:380:46:42

The Wallaces hope Australia will give them

0:46:420:46:45

the family life they dream of.

0:46:450:46:48

Over the next week, they'll experience

0:46:480:46:50

the reality of living down under before they make their final choice,

0:46:500:46:54

whether to stay in the UK or to make the move for good.

0:46:540:46:59

Their journey begins with the long haul across three continents,

0:47:010:47:04

covering 10,000 miles, before arriving in Sydney.

0:47:040:47:08

Despite the long trip,

0:47:080:47:10

the family are feeling positive about what's to come.

0:47:100:47:14

Flight was lovely.

0:47:140:47:15

We're here now, we're just waiting to see what happens

0:47:150:47:18

and we've been looking forward to it.

0:47:180:47:20

Just see what Sydney has to offer,

0:47:200:47:23

and hopefully the weather will stay dry!

0:47:230:47:26

They've arrived in the Australian winter, but they'll be hoping

0:47:290:47:32

it's an improvement on the weather at home.

0:47:320:47:36

Back in the UK, the Wallaces live in Newport, in South Wales.

0:47:370:47:42

Amanda and Ben recently celebrated their marriage, for the second time.

0:47:420:47:47

'Today means the world to me.'

0:47:500:47:53

I'm married to Ben again and we're a proper family again.

0:47:530:47:56

It's a fresh start basically.

0:47:560:47:59

Everything's gone now that's in the past.

0:47:590:48:01

Just look to the future instead.

0:48:010:48:03

Life for the Wallaces hasn't always been this rosy.

0:48:030:48:08

In 2005, they emigrated to New Zealand with their daughters, Aimee and Libby,

0:48:080:48:11

in search of a better family life.

0:48:110:48:14

However, down under didn't live up to their expectations.

0:48:140:48:18

Obviously when we emigrated to New Zealand,

0:48:180:48:21

the climate was similar to the UK,

0:48:210:48:24

it wasn't as hot as I expected it to be, it was fairly chilly,

0:48:240:48:28

we had landslides and floods while we were there.

0:48:280:48:31

And their ideas of life in New Zealand

0:48:310:48:34

-seemed to be at odds with each other.

-I went to work...

0:48:340:48:37

I didn't.

0:48:370:48:38

..and Ben decided it was a surfing holiday!

0:48:380:48:41

No, I didn't. I struggled to get work.

0:48:410:48:44

-You did not!

-I did!

0:48:440:48:45

There was loads of work. You just preferred to do other things.

0:48:450:48:49

I beg to differ on that.

0:48:490:48:50

They might not agree how it all happened, but in 2005,

0:48:500:48:54

after just a few months, the Wallaces returned to the UK

0:48:540:48:58

where matters got even worse.

0:48:580:49:01

So we came back, tried to give it another go.

0:49:010:49:04

We were arguing a lot

0:49:040:49:06

and I decided to divorce Ben.

0:49:060:49:10

After all their ups and downs, the Wallaces are back together as a family

0:49:120:49:16

and Ben and Amanda's thoughts have once again turned to moving down under.

0:49:160:49:20

Come on, girls! Beach!

0:49:200:49:22

-What we thought we were coming back to...

-We didn't come back to.

0:49:220:49:27

Newport's not changed for the better, it's got worse.

0:49:270:49:30

And the economic climate's got worse.

0:49:300:49:33

And they've had their fill of the great British weather.

0:49:330:49:37

I'm fed up of cold, miserable weather.

0:49:370:49:42

It's just not very nice.

0:49:420:49:43

They're also hoping Australia could give Aimee and Libby a brighter future.

0:49:430:49:48

All we want to do is give the best we can for them basically,

0:49:480:49:52

and if you can't do that for your children, there's nothing you can do.

0:49:520:49:55

We'd do anything for them.

0:49:550:49:57

And the Aussie surf is a big pull for Ben and the girls.

0:49:570:50:01

Because of the warmth and temperature of the water

0:50:010:50:04

in Australia, then I'll be able to go and surf a lot more.

0:50:040:50:09

I want to be by the beach and I want to go surfing when I can basically.

0:50:090:50:13

Not when...

0:50:130:50:15

I'm allowed to.

0:50:150:50:17

However this time, they're stealing realistic about what life might be like.

0:50:170:50:23

We're not expecting the grass to be greener.

0:50:230:50:25

We ARE expecting to work hard over there

0:50:250:50:28

and we're not expecting to have a big, huge house,

0:50:280:50:31

cos we haven't got a huge house here.

0:50:310:50:33

With so much riding on the week, the Wallaces' experience in the past

0:50:330:50:37

could have a big impact on their future.

0:50:370:50:39

Will we work out together?

0:50:390:50:41

Will we end up divorcing again?

0:50:410:50:43

You never know. You can't foresee what the future holds.

0:50:430:50:47

You've got to look at the now

0:50:470:50:50

and at the moment, that is the way forward.

0:50:500:50:53

You know, who knows what's round the corner?

0:50:530:50:56

So will the past help them make the right choices this time around?

0:50:580:51:02

Or could they be heading for stormy waters all over again?

0:51:020:51:06

Home for the week is Sydney, Australia's largest and most famous city.

0:51:080:51:13

With its stunning scenery and fast pace of life,

0:51:130:51:16

it's a magnet for immigrants from all around the world,

0:51:160:51:20

but can it deliver the Wallaces the new start they hope for?

0:51:200:51:24

They're spending the week in the suburb of Manly,

0:51:260:51:29

seven miles' drive north-east of Sydney.

0:51:290:51:32

Ben and Amanda have visited Australia before,

0:51:320:51:35

but under very different circumstances.

0:51:350:51:38

I've been out here before, I went to Melbourne with the girls

0:51:380:51:41

and my friend Donna,

0:51:410:51:43

and Ben came out here soon after in the November time,

0:51:430:51:48

after we split up, with another lady, shall we say.

0:51:480:51:52

So it was really traumatic for me to be coming here,

0:51:520:51:56

although it's where Ben wants to be,

0:51:560:51:59

just because you always wonder what he was doing here

0:51:590:52:03

and where he went and that sort of thing.

0:52:030:52:05

It wasn't part of my life at the time.

0:52:050:52:07

It's an emotional issue but one that Ben is confident they can handle.

0:52:070:52:12

I try to support her through it as best I can,

0:52:120:52:14

but hopefully we'll get through all that,

0:52:140:52:17

like we've got through the last two years

0:52:170:52:19

and we'll build a life together in Australia.

0:52:190:52:23

And their search for a new future starts at this two-bedroom cottage.

0:52:230:52:29

It should give them a good taste of what Australian living can offer.

0:52:290:52:33

-And the sun's out.

-Oh, this is lovely!

0:52:340:52:36

I love...just the noises out in the garden!

0:52:360:52:40

Yeah, and the smells.

0:52:400:52:42

-It's lovely, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:52:420:52:45

Nice, blue sky as well!

0:52:450:52:47

-They'll be coming here for a barbecue, won't they!

-Mmm.

0:52:470:52:50

It's really nice. Really like it.

0:52:500:52:52

I doubt we'll be able to afford anything like this, though!

0:52:520:52:55

Can I go to sleep now?

0:52:550:52:57

I'm just looking forward to it.

0:52:570:52:59

Just see it as a new start.

0:52:590:53:02

Maybe some better opportunities. I don't know until...

0:53:020:53:05

I'll take each day as it comes and then see what happens basically.

0:53:050:53:09

You don't have anxieties, do you?

0:53:090:53:11

I tend not to get anxious or worry about things, really.

0:53:110:53:16

-I take it all in my stride and just get on with it.

-Life the easy way!

0:53:160:53:20

I do everything one day...

0:53:200:53:22

Hence no haircut or a shave.

0:53:220:53:25

We've got to find a barber as well!

0:53:250:53:27

She's gone.

0:53:300:53:32

Finding a warm bed and a barber might be top of the list right now,

0:53:340:53:38

but the family know there's some huge decisions ahead of them.

0:53:380:53:42

The key to the Wallaces making the move is finding the right house in the right location,

0:53:460:53:52

but living in one of the most expensive cities in the world won't come cheap,

0:53:520:53:56

so could they be facing a strain on their wallets?

0:53:560:54:00

Back in the UK, the Wallaces live in Amanda's three-bedroom house

0:54:020:54:05

in Newport in South Wales.

0:54:050:54:09

Ben also has a two-bedroom house that he rents out.

0:54:090:54:12

For the move to work, finding the right home in Australia would be a big step forward.

0:54:120:54:17

We don't want a place with a swimming pool.

0:54:170:54:20

I'd rather a small house close to the beach.

0:54:200:54:22

Obviously we'll have to have three bedrooms.

0:54:220:54:25

I would say four, for people visiting.

0:54:250:54:27

OK, ideally four bedrooms, but three would suffice

0:54:290:54:33

as long as we've all... The girls have got their own bedrooms.

0:54:330:54:38

They'll finance the move by selling both properties, if they can agree on what they want,

0:54:380:54:43

which could give them a total budget of £270,000.

0:54:430:54:47

Today, we're going to give them a taste of the Sydney property market.

0:54:490:54:54

We'll show them three options based upon what they want from their ideal home,

0:54:540:54:58

what they can afford, and the real price of property down under.

0:54:580:55:03

After seeing first-hand what's on offer,

0:55:030:55:05

we'll reveal to the family just how much each house costs.

0:55:050:55:08

Having visited before,

0:55:100:55:11

Amanda and Ben have some idea about Aussie houses,

0:55:110:55:14

but prices and exchange rates have changed a great deal in recent years

0:55:140:55:19

so could they be in for a few surprises?

0:55:190:55:22

The first property is in Brookvale,

0:55:220:55:24

just a few minutes' drive north of Manly

0:55:240:55:27

and close to surfing beaches.

0:55:270:55:29

To try and keep costs down, it's a new two-bedroom apartment,

0:55:290:55:33

but will it get things off to a good start?

0:55:330:55:37

Quite secluded.

0:55:370:55:39

Oh, this is nice.

0:55:440:55:46

Nice size kitchen.

0:55:460:55:48

It's not too bad.

0:55:480:55:50

But this would be your living room and dining room.

0:55:500:55:53

Bigger than I thought it would be.

0:55:530:55:55

Do you want to look at the bedrooms?

0:55:550:55:57

Whose bedroom is this?

0:55:570:56:00

Yours!

0:56:000:56:01

Nice walk-in wardrobes. All for me.

0:56:010:56:03

-So this would be...

-Second bedroom.

0:56:030:56:06

-It's two bedrooms.

-It's not ideal.

0:56:060:56:09

It is nice, but...

0:56:090:56:11

might even have to share a double bed.

0:56:110:56:13

-At a push.

-Mmm.

0:56:130:56:15

What do you think?

0:56:150:56:17

-I like it, but it's a bit small.

-Yes.

0:56:170:56:20

To be sharing with your sister.

0:56:200:56:22

It's looking as if this apartment is simply too small for their needs.

0:56:220:56:27

Can the outside change their minds?

0:56:270:56:29

First impressions? This looks really good, yeah.

0:56:290:56:33

Seeing as Ben doesn't have to do any DIY at all.

0:56:330:56:36

Maybe a bit of painting.

0:56:360:56:37

Not even painting. Nothing wrong with magnolia!

0:56:370:56:41

So with a very quick tour over, the girls hang out on the terrace,

0:56:410:56:44

while Amanda and Ben find out the price.

0:56:440:56:48

How will a cheaper option fit with their £270,000 budget?

0:56:480:56:51

What do you think? Do you think it's something we can afford?

0:56:510:56:54

I wouldn't hazard a guess on a two-bedroom apartment. We've not looked at any.

0:56:540:56:58

-Shall we have a look?

-Go on then.

0:56:580:57:02

Here goes.

0:57:020:57:03

Oh!

0:57:050:57:06

£267,000.

0:57:060:57:08

Judging by those gasps, it looks as if they're encouraged

0:57:090:57:12

by the price, if not by the space on offer.

0:57:120:57:15

-If we could find a three-bedroom, we might be able to afford.

-Yeah.

0:57:150:57:19

So really, really impressed.

0:57:190:57:21

-I'm quite shocked.

-Yeah!

0:57:210:57:22

The second stop is another new apartment.

0:57:290:57:33

Set further inland in the Frenchs Forest area,

0:57:330:57:36

it should show the Wallaces what they can get

0:57:360:57:38

IF they're willing to live further from the beach.

0:57:380:57:41

Could this modern Aussie pad be right for them?

0:57:410:57:44

Wow! I like that.

0:57:440:57:47

That's different, isn't it?

0:57:470:57:49

Mmm. Very modern.

0:57:490:57:52

-I like the colours.

-I like the floor.

0:57:520:57:55

-The island.

-Very nice.

0:57:550:57:58

-That's where your fridge-freezer goes.

-Is that a dishwasher?

0:57:580:58:02

Oh, yeah, ooh!

0:58:020:58:03

I mean, it's more modern than we've ever had before,

0:58:040:58:07

but it's really nice.

0:58:070:58:09

We've never had modern like this.

0:58:090:58:11

-It's your taste, is it?

-You like it, Ames?

-Yes.

0:58:110:58:13

So Aimee approves, but will just two bedrooms keep everyone else happy?

0:58:130:58:19

-This is nice.

-It's quite small.

0:58:200:58:22

You could probably get two singles in here.

0:58:220:58:26

But it's not a very big space for them.

0:58:260:58:29

Now this is lovely.

0:58:290:58:30

It is nice, but it is just two bedrooms.

0:58:310:58:34

If we didn't have children, this would be ideal!

0:58:340:58:37

But we've got to think of you as well, haven't we?

0:58:370:58:40

Yeah!

0:58:400:58:41

Once again, things are looking a little cramped,

0:58:410:58:45

but there is plenty of room out on the terrace.

0:58:450:58:48

That's a nice view.

0:58:480:58:50

-This is lovely.

-Wow. This is a big balcony.

0:58:500:58:53

This would definitely suit me.

0:58:530:58:55

There is no garden again, but you don't have to mow lawns if there's no garden.

0:58:550:58:59

Despite the size, this apartment looks the part,

0:59:020:59:06

but will it be more or less affordable than the first?

0:59:060:59:11

I think this is going to be more expensive than the last one.

0:59:110:59:15

-Yeah?

-It's slightly bigger.

0:59:150:59:16

-A lot bigger.

-It's further out.

0:59:160:59:19

It is further from the beach.

0:59:190:59:21

-But the finish is...

-A lot nicer.

0:59:210:59:24

..a better quality.

0:59:240:59:26

-Still two bedrooms, though.

-And it's still only two bedrooms.

0:59:270:59:30

-Ready?

-We'll see.

0:59:300:59:32

-Ooh!

-Dear me.

0:59:350:59:36

386,000.

0:59:360:59:38

We might have to think about moving away further from the beach,

0:59:380:59:41

even though this is further from the last one,

0:59:410:59:44

it might have to be that that's what we compromise on.

0:59:440:59:47

We can't afford...

0:59:470:59:50

If we wanted to come to Australia, then we have to compromise more

0:59:500:59:54

than perhaps we thought we would have.

0:59:540:59:57

-YOU'LL have to compromise.

-I'LL have to compromise.

0:59:570:59:59

And go surfing less!

0:59:591:00:01

-As long as I'm with you and the girls...

-Ah!

1:00:031:00:06

..anywhere will be fine.

1:00:061:00:09

Ah, that's very noble of Ben.

1:00:111:00:13

But could he really give up his dream of a surfer lifestyle?

1:00:131:00:17

With the second property well over budget,

1:00:171:00:20

everything rests on the Wallaces' final stop.

1:00:201:00:24

Getting the right location and size is clearly going to be tough in Sydney

1:00:241:00:28

and one option may be an Aussie doer upper.

1:00:281:00:32

So, we're ending the search near the beach, in Manly North.

1:00:321:00:35

The third property is a traditional weatherboard house

1:00:351:00:38

and should be big enough for the Wallaces' needs.

1:00:381:00:42

Oh, it's big!

1:00:451:00:47

-A nice fireplace.

-Quite a nice size, isn't it?

-Yeah.

1:00:471:00:51

-It's dated and would need work...

-But not a lot of work. It's only cosmetic.

1:00:511:00:55

This is probably more our type of property than the apartments we've looked at, really.

1:00:551:01:00

Oh, they've got two single beds. What do you reckon?

1:01:011:01:04

-Yeah.

-So, it's probably just two bedrooms again.

1:01:041:01:08

-It's sort of like a bungalow.

-It is.

1:01:081:01:11

-It is a bungalow, yes.

-It's a promising start.

1:01:111:01:14

Ben has a plan to find that all-important extra bedroom.

1:01:141:01:17

If you made it open plan and moved it that way, you'd turn that into a bedroom.

1:01:171:01:20

That's what I'm saying. So you could have three bedrooms.

1:01:201:01:23

This, you don't need it as a dining room or study.

1:01:231:01:27

-Can we have a look at the garden?

-We can go out and see what there is.

1:01:271:01:31

Outside there's a walled garden that should have plenty of space

1:01:311:01:35

for the family's surfboards.

1:01:351:01:37

We did a full renovation in New Zealand

1:01:371:01:39

and it actually properly was in a worse state than this.

1:01:391:01:43

So, it's a similar project,

1:01:431:01:46

but in a hopefully better area, even though it's raining at the moment.

1:01:461:01:51

-But...

-It's doable.

-Yeah.

-Well...

-All according to the price.

1:01:511:01:57

Although Ben and Amanda aren't put off by the amount of work needed,

1:02:001:02:04

another big renovation project wasn't in their plan for the move.

1:02:041:02:08

So, will the price of this house provide answers or more questions?

1:02:081:02:13

-Shall we have a look?

-Go on then.

1:02:131:02:16

£450,000.

1:02:161:02:19

For a doer upperer.

1:02:191:02:21

Well, I suppose on par with other things in Manly themselves,

1:02:211:02:25

or Manly Vale or around this area, we knew it would be that sort of price.

1:02:251:02:30

Disappointed, I suppose.

1:02:301:02:32

That's £200,000 over budget.

1:02:321:02:35

Is the dream location simply out of reach

1:02:351:02:38

or can they find a silver lining behind all those zeros?

1:02:381:02:42

-It doesn't mean it's over.

-No.

1:02:421:02:44

-We learned our lesson in New Zealand, haven't we?

-Not to rush into it.

1:02:441:02:48

Take a step back and give ourselves a bit more time, really.

1:02:481:02:52

If there's this in the centre of Manly, what is there further up?

1:02:521:02:56

-It's not the end of it yet.

-No.

1:02:561:02:59

-Not the end of your dream yet, is it, love, to live by the beach?

-Yeah.

1:02:591:03:03

It's been an eye-opening experience for the Wallaces.

1:03:031:03:07

The first apartment was too small and soon ruled out.

1:03:071:03:11

The second had the looks, but it came with a big price tag.

1:03:111:03:15

And the last was ideally placed, but wildly over budget.

1:03:151:03:19

So, which way will they vote on houses in Australia?

1:03:211:03:25

-UK.

-Australia.

-I'm in the middle.

1:03:361:03:40

Why?

1:03:401:03:42

Because the apartments and houses we've seen today

1:03:421:03:47

-don't suit our needs...

-I agree with you.

-..and they're far too expensive in this area.

1:03:471:03:53

I've gone half and half because obviously we won't be able to afford to live in Manly,

1:03:531:03:57

but there are other areas on the East Coast and going up towards Brisbane as well

1:03:571:04:02

we can look at and research and look to live there maybe.

1:04:021:04:06

And it's cold in Manly!

1:04:061:04:10

It's been a less than warm welcome back down under for the Wallaces.

1:04:101:04:14

But if they're ready to compromise on a housing location,

1:04:141:04:17

a new start could still be within reach.

1:04:171:04:21

Sydney's sky-high prices have come as a real shock to the Wallaces

1:04:251:04:29

and left their Aussie dream high in the air.

1:04:291:04:33

But with any life in Sydney being an expensive one,

1:04:331:04:36

everything depends on Ben and Amanda finding good work opportunities.

1:04:361:04:40

In the UK, Amanda works in nurse recruitment

1:04:431:04:46

and earns £27,000 a year.

1:04:461:04:48

But she wants to get back to a nursing role in Australia.

1:04:481:04:52

I'm looking to get more clinically involved

1:04:521:04:54

again in the role of the nurse,

1:04:541:04:57

either practice nursing, which I've done in this country,

1:04:571:05:00

or occupational health nursing, which I've done in this country as well.

1:05:001:05:04

I don't particularly want to have to work full-time over in Australia.

1:05:041:05:08

Um, that's going to be left to Ben.

1:05:081:05:12

But Ben is a little more open about what he'd like to do.

1:05:121:05:16

I be looking to do anything basically.

1:05:161:05:19

As long as I had an income, I'm not particularly worried.

1:05:191:05:22

Anything sort of surveying, facilities management,

1:05:221:05:25

asset management-type job, I'd be looking in those areas.

1:05:251:05:28

Today, both Amanda and Ben are going to have a taste

1:05:301:05:33

of what it might be like to work in Australia.

1:05:331:05:36

Amanda is first to set off.

1:05:381:05:40

She's keen not to repeat the mistakes of their last experience down under.

1:05:401:05:44

'I worked four nights a week in a maternity hospital.'

1:05:441:05:47

It was like an hour each way for me to get to work.

1:05:471:05:51

Ben wasn't really that bothered in finding a job. So that's where things went wrong.

1:05:511:05:56

I'm just hoping that things are going to be different.

1:05:561:05:59

Ben is going to hopefully be more motivated and hopefully has grown up a bit more

1:05:591:06:05

in the last five, six years, to realise that,

1:06:051:06:08

to actually get this sort of lifestyle, you have got to work.

1:06:081:06:11

We're coming out here for the children, not just for him to surf, really.

1:06:111:06:16

As the main visa applicant, we've arranged for her to spend the morning on a maternity ward.

1:06:161:06:21

Unit manager Isabel Cullen-Romqvist will show her the ropes.

1:06:211:06:25

-So, you want to have a look around?

-Yes, please.

-Cool. Come on, let's go.

1:06:251:06:29

This is the postnatal ward.

1:06:291:06:31

We've got 20 beds, 12 rooms.

1:06:311:06:33

Er, some rooms are single rooms.

1:06:331:06:36

I think there are four or five single rooms

1:06:361:06:38

and the rest are two beds in each room.

1:06:381:06:41

This is room three. This is one of the single rooms.

1:06:411:06:43

We try not to double up women unless we have to.

1:06:431:06:47

If we're really busy, we'll double up.

1:06:471:06:49

-Only single rooms in the UK are for high risk patients.

-Oh, right!

1:06:491:06:53

Obviously, they come back here postnatally.

1:06:531:06:56

Where do they go to deliver?

1:06:561:06:58

-Delivery suites or...?

-Absolutely. We've got a birthing unit. Why don't we go and have a look?

1:06:581:07:03

-Come with me.

-Thank you.

1:07:031:07:05

While Amanda continues her tour, Ben is exploring his work options.

1:07:051:07:10

It's really important to find work while I'm in Australia.

1:07:101:07:14

Just to bring a living into the family

1:07:141:07:16

and look after the girls, give them the lifestyle they want.

1:07:161:07:19

It took me a long time to find work in New Zealand. I went there with the wrong attitude.

1:07:191:07:24

That did sort of grind on Amanda. She was working from day one from being there. So, it was a big issue.

1:07:241:07:30

I wouldn't want that to happen again. I'd like to find work first.

1:07:301:07:34

For Ben, an ideal job would be running a surf shop.

1:07:341:07:38

To find out whether it could be a practical option, he's spending the morning at Manly Beach.

1:07:381:07:43

Store manager Gerard McCallum gives him the lowdown on the business.

1:07:431:07:48

-How are you?

-Ben.

-Gerard.

1:07:481:07:51

-What can you tell me about the business?

-What we do,

1:07:511:07:53

a few different sides to this shop. You've got new boards, second-hand boards.

1:07:531:07:57

We do rentals, repairs, wetsuits.

1:07:571:08:01

The main thing is just finding the right board for the right person.

1:08:011:08:04

-Yeah.

-Working out the correct volume for their weight.

1:08:041:08:08

And it's kind of challenging because a lot of people think

1:08:081:08:11

they're a lot better than they are, so it's hard to get right.

1:08:111:08:14

Ben loves the surf talk, but he's also keen to get down to the serious business.

1:08:141:08:19

The big question is, what sort of salary would you be looking at?

1:08:191:08:23

You'd be looking around 40 grand a year, so...

1:08:231:08:26

-That's about 800 a week before tax.

-OK.

-You have to put in quite a lot of hours, being retail,

1:08:261:08:30

but definitely you'll have to put in some weekend hours,

1:08:301:08:34

because that's when everyone else isn't working.

1:08:341:08:37

That would be your busiest day, wouldn't it? Saturday and Sunday.

1:08:371:08:41

That's great. You've been informative.

1:08:411:08:44

-Nice to meet you.

-Nice to meet you. See you again. Bye.

1:08:441:08:47

What a place to work! Across the road, on a beach, into the water.

1:08:471:08:51

That would be a dream for any surfer, I suppose. 40,000.

1:08:511:08:57

It's not that far off what we were earning in the UK.

1:08:571:09:00

So it could possibly sustain us for a while

1:09:001:09:04

so it could be more of a stopgap sort of job for me whilst looking

1:09:041:09:08

for something that I would feel I'd be more suited to, basically.

1:09:081:09:12

It looks as if the dream job isn't going to be realistic,

1:09:121:09:15

but is then happy with his choice?

1:09:151:09:18

Since coming back from New Zealand, I think I've grown up a lot more.

1:09:181:09:21

I take things a lot more serious than I did before,

1:09:211:09:24

especially family-wise.

1:09:241:09:25

What's gone on since the return from New Zealand,

1:09:251:09:29

it's made me realise that family is the main thing, basically.

1:09:291:09:33

That's great news for Amanda.

1:09:331:09:36

Back on the ward, she's also getting down to business matters.

1:09:361:09:40

What's the salary like over here?

1:09:401:09:42

-Roughly 90,000.

-Right. Gosh!

-A year.

1:09:421:09:45

That's a lot. It's double what I'm on now.

1:09:451:09:49

That's good, that's good for you.

1:09:491:09:51

It looks like Amanda could earn around £60,000,

1:09:511:09:55

which is welcome news. But are there any vacancies?

1:09:551:09:59

We are looking for midwives, part-time and full-time.

1:09:591:10:02

It's internal. But I'd say other hospitals,

1:10:021:10:05

there seems to be a shortage,

1:10:051:10:07

-so I'm sure you'll be right.

-Lovely!

1:10:071:10:11

Have Ben and Amanda been won over by working in Australia

1:10:111:10:15

or would they rather stick with the UK?

1:10:151:10:19

We've had an interesting day today, finding out

1:10:211:10:25

all sorts of different things about jobs we could do in Australia.

1:10:251:10:28

Now it's time to vote.

1:10:281:10:30

-Australia.

-Australia.

1:10:381:10:42

-Why?

-The money.

1:10:421:10:44

And I could probably work part-time which is what I want to do.

1:10:441:10:48

-Definitely.

-Why did you choose it?

1:10:481:10:51

I just want to live in Australia so I'll do anything, basically.

1:10:511:10:54

And find something that's relevant to what I do at the moment.

1:10:541:10:57

-A proper job!

-Not so much working in a surf shop,

1:10:571:11:00

-but doing something I know what I'm doing basically.

-Before we come out?

1:11:001:11:05

-Before we come out.

-So we're sorted when we get here.

1:11:051:11:08

Ben's willingness to hang up his wetsuit

1:11:111:11:14

and find a better paying job is welcome news for Amanda.

1:11:141:11:18

But with finances looking tight, could the dream of living in Sydney

1:11:181:11:23

be blinding them from what it might cost?

1:11:231:11:26

Amanda believes their three-bedroom house in Newport is worth £150,000.

1:11:281:11:33

And Ben thinks his two-bedroom house is valued at 120,000.

1:11:331:11:37

They'll need the money from both properties in order to afford a house in Australia.

1:11:371:11:43

-So, we've asked two local estate agents for their opinion.

-Ready?

-Yeah.

1:11:431:11:47

My lovely little house.

1:11:491:11:51

Ah! Look at my wallpaper!

1:11:521:11:56

Lovely open plan kitchen.

1:11:561:11:58

It looks as if it's been newly refitted as well.

1:11:581:12:01

-Really nice.

-The living room's rather nice. Nice and bright.

1:12:011:12:06

Reproduction fireplace, polished floors. Lovely!

1:12:061:12:10

Libby!

1:12:101:12:11

This is a very pink room.

1:12:111:12:15

It's a little girl's dream and is, at the same time, a really nice sized double.

1:12:151:12:19

Looks tidy, love, for once.

1:12:191:12:21

Look at those clothes!

1:12:211:12:24

Really nice size. And as well, it's got a lovely outlook.

1:12:241:12:27

Third bedroom.

1:12:271:12:29

And somebody's obviously getting ready to go to Australia already.

1:12:291:12:33

-THEY LAUGH

-Oh, yeah!

1:12:331:12:36

Oh, no! That's not a good look.

1:12:381:12:41

It's a lovely family property.

1:12:411:12:44

A three-bedroom semi-detached in a really popular residential area.

1:12:441:12:47

I would expect this property to achieve in the region of £150,000.

1:12:471:12:51

If they are looking at a quicker sale,

1:12:511:12:53

they should expect to achieve approximately 140,000.

1:12:531:12:57

Having valued the other property, I would expect that to achieve in the region of 115,000.

1:12:571:13:02

For a quick sale again they should be looking at 105 towards 110,000.

1:13:021:13:07

-I still made money.

-I made more money on mine than you!

1:13:071:13:10

I would recommend putting this property on the market at 155,000.

1:13:101:13:15

For a quick sale, 145,000.

1:13:151:13:17

The other property we saw, I would suggest an asking price of £115,000.

1:13:171:13:21

For a quick sell, £105,000.

1:13:211:13:25

-I'm really pleased with my valuation.

-It's what I was expecting.

1:13:281:13:31

I didn't expect to make any money on my property.

1:13:311:13:34

I would probably have about 50, 55,000.

1:13:341:13:39

I have about 20 if it sold for 115.

1:13:391:13:40

So we'd have about 70, 75,

1:13:401:13:43

which is about 90,000. Which is OK.

1:13:431:13:47

Not too bad, I suppose.

1:13:471:13:49

Despite Ben's estimate being lower than expected,

1:13:491:13:52

they're staying positive.

1:13:521:13:55

But they'll really need to look closely at the cost of living

1:13:551:13:58

to see if they can afford this move.

1:13:581:14:00

Right. So this is the shopping list.

1:14:041:14:07

This is what we would buy on a regular basis. It's on a par. Yeah.

1:14:071:14:12

So that's the shopping list.

1:14:121:14:15

This is the bit that'll be really bad, I reckon.

1:14:151:14:17

The properties. OK.

1:14:171:14:21

Right, property three, 700,000.

1:14:211:14:23

So, the repayments are £2,734,

1:14:231:14:27

but, yeah, you would have to do it up as well, so...

1:14:271:14:30

-So, you'd need the money to do it up.

-Yeah.

1:14:301:14:33

So, we'd actually be...

1:14:341:14:37

£1,506 worse off per month.

1:14:371:14:40

-If we lived in Manly.

-If we lived in Manly.

1:14:401:14:43

This is worst-case scenario in the most expensive place we could possibly think of.

1:14:431:14:47

Yeah, and we could... We could do it.

1:14:471:14:50

Yeah. So, yeah. It's not going to put me off.

1:14:501:14:53

No. Good news, really.

1:14:531:14:55

Even though their living costs could be much higher in Australia,

1:14:561:15:00

Ben and Amanda think their incomes will cover the difference.

1:15:001:15:03

Will they vote with their hearts or with their heads?

1:15:031:15:06

We've done the reality check,

1:15:061:15:08

we've done the facts, the figures and the numbers,

1:15:081:15:10

and now it's time to vote.

1:15:101:15:13

-Australia.

-Australia.

1:15:161:15:18

So, why?

1:15:211:15:23

-Because I can earn a relatively good wage, so I could go part-time.

-Yeah.

1:15:231:15:29

You will, hopefully, be earning more money than you would in a shop,

1:15:291:15:33

and so it is doable, and this is what the children want to do.

1:15:331:15:37

And we both want to do it as well, so...

1:15:371:15:40

it's about time we done it, really.

1:15:401:15:42

-Put your house on the market, then.

-It will be.

1:15:421:15:45

The Wallaces are still persevering,

1:15:521:15:54

even if it means a rethink on where they want to live.

1:15:541:15:57

They're prepared to take the risk for the opportunity

1:15:571:16:01

of a better family lifestyle that they've all dreamt about.

1:16:011:16:05

Back home, Libby is a budding gymnast

1:16:071:16:10

and being able to continue her sport in Australia is a must.

1:16:101:16:13

So the Wallaces are heading down to Manly gymnastics club

1:16:131:16:17

to find out what the facilities could offer her.

1:16:171:16:20

-Hello.

-Hi.

-Hello.

-So, you must be Libby.

1:16:221:16:25

Hi, Libby, I'm Natalie, I'm the head women's coach here.

1:16:251:16:28

After brief introductions, Libby's put through her paces

1:16:281:16:31

with ex-Chinese national gymnastics coach, Xiaoqing Li.

1:16:311:16:34

She's keen to find out if Libby is good enough to be accepted

1:16:341:16:39

on the Australian national gymnastic programme.

1:16:391:16:41

Two...three...

1:16:411:16:43

Faster! Sprint!

1:16:431:16:45

This is fantastic, it's just, you know, so much better.

1:16:451:16:48

You can do so much more things

1:16:481:16:50

and teach so many more children, can't you,

1:16:501:16:53

with this sort of facility.

1:16:531:16:54

One... Straight leg. Two...

1:16:541:16:57

I think, obviously, finding the girls activities over here is paramount,

1:16:571:17:01

because they want to continue what they're doing in the UK.

1:17:011:17:04

Obviously, they can do this during the week and, obviously, weekends,

1:17:041:17:08

if it allows, and then we've got the family time, then, haven't we?

1:17:081:17:11

Yeah.

1:17:111:17:13

I can say she's powerful. She jump high.

1:17:131:17:16

Stand your leg straight.

1:17:161:17:18

Open your shoulders. Head up.

1:17:181:17:20

Yeah, when you go down, arch your head,

1:17:201:17:22

knees straight. Good girl. All right.

1:17:221:17:24

No, you came in too early. Keep going.

1:17:261:17:28

Leave your arms here.

1:17:281:17:30

I think Libby is good enough.

1:17:301:17:33

In NDP programme, so, it's Australian national programme,

1:17:331:17:37

if she come to Australia, I think she will have good future.

1:17:371:17:43

Ah, that's better. Good girl.

1:17:441:17:47

That's great news. So, after working out at the gym,

1:17:471:17:51

it's time for some fun on one of Sydney's golden beaches.

1:17:511:17:56

Um, we've come down to Manly beach

1:17:561:17:59

for the girls to have a surf lesson,

1:17:591:18:01

so, hopefully they might catch them later.

1:18:011:18:03

It's not very good weather today, apparently, for surfing.

1:18:031:18:07

It's a bit choppy.

1:18:071:18:08

Oh, dear. It looks like the weather as turned a bit British.

1:18:081:18:11

The conditions here are very much like home.

1:18:111:18:14

Windy, rainy, cold. So we're used to it anyway.

1:18:141:18:16

Bit acclimatised to this type of weather.

1:18:161:18:18

But rain is not allowed to stop play.

1:18:181:18:21

If you're going to learn surfing, you've got to go out in all conditions.

1:18:211:18:25

So, if you start on a hard day and you have fun on a hard day,

1:18:251:18:28

you're going to have a great time when it's easier.

1:18:281:18:30

And there's no time to waste as instructor James

1:18:301:18:33

gets the girls straight into the water.

1:18:331:18:35

Go, Aimee! Woo-hoo-hoo!

1:18:521:18:56

It was great watching the girls have a go.

1:19:091:19:11

Both of them stood up, so, really proud of them.

1:19:111:19:13

Yeah, it was really good.

1:19:131:19:15

And James was a really good teacher as well,

1:19:151:19:17

you know, to get Libby stood up first time.

1:19:171:19:19

You can't ask for any more than that, can you?

1:19:191:19:21

After a busy day in and out of the water, it's time vote on lifestyle.

1:19:231:19:28

Australia!

1:19:321:19:34

-He-he-hey!

-Why you?

1:19:351:19:37

I just love being on the beach, so it's a bonus for me, isn't it?

1:19:371:19:40

-What about you, Libs?

-Cos they've nice gyms.

-Aimee?

1:19:401:19:44

-Uh, both the activities were good.

-I just like this sort of lifestyle.

1:19:441:19:48

It's quite laid back and I need to be more laid back,

1:19:481:19:51

so it's a vote from me.

1:19:511:19:53

Sampling the Aussie lifestyle was a big success,

1:19:581:20:02

even if it did have a bit of Newport weather thrown in for good measure.

1:20:021:20:06

But the Wallaces know full well just how far they'd be

1:20:061:20:09

from everything they have at home,

1:20:091:20:11

so will saying goodbye to friends and family

1:20:111:20:15

be easier or harder second time round?

1:20:151:20:18

So, we've prepared some messages from their loved ones in the UK.

1:20:201:20:24

Do you think it's OK for the children to watch?

1:20:241:20:27

Yeah. Libby wants to see Maz and Tina

1:20:271:20:29

and Aimee wants to see her running coaches

1:20:291:20:31

so, yeah, I think that's fine.

1:20:311:20:32

'Hi, Ben, Amanda and Libby and Aimee.'

1:20:341:20:37

Hi, Aimee.

1:20:371:20:38

Hello, Libby!

1:20:381:20:41

Ben and Amanda, I really hope you're making the right decision this time,

1:20:411:20:46

for yourselves and for the girls.

1:20:461:20:49

I shall miss Aimee and Libby a lot,

1:20:491:20:52

'because I meet them twice a week from school and we make cakes'

1:20:521:20:55

and we do cooking and they tell me all their problems,

1:20:551:21:00

so I will miss them.

1:21:001:21:01

We're all really missing you here at Newport Harriers.

1:21:011:21:04

We've been training really hard,

1:21:041:21:05

we're going through our sprint and speed sessions,

1:21:051:21:08

'we miss you sprinting down that track, beating everybody.'

1:21:081:21:11

Hi, Libby. Hope you're having a fantastic time in Australia.

1:21:111:21:15

-Everybody misses you, we send our love.

-Aw.

1:21:151:21:19

I hope you're keeping up with your flexibility training.

1:21:191:21:23

But not too much. We miss you here.

1:21:231:21:26

'Well, Aimee.'

1:21:261:21:27

You know how much Grandma loves you and how much I'll miss you.

1:21:271:21:31

And you, Libby, I hope

1:21:321:21:35

'that you will continue with the gymnastics'

1:21:351:21:39

and really do well. Eat your food.

1:21:391:21:42

We both will miss you very, very much indeed.

1:21:421:21:46

'I don't want anything to go wrong this time, if at all possible'

1:21:461:21:50

and that you're all one big happy family.

1:21:501:21:56

I hope things will go well for all of you, always.

1:21:561:22:01

LIBBY SOBS

1:22:041:22:06

Come on.

1:22:061:22:08

I'm OK.

1:22:111:22:12

Is it cos of Grandma crying?

1:22:121:22:15

Yeah, you've probably never seen Grandma upset, have you?

1:22:151:22:18

You're going to see them soon, anyway.

1:22:181:22:20

It was quite hard, really, watching that.

1:22:201:22:23

Especially my mother.

1:22:231:22:25

I knew she would be, you know, upset.

1:22:251:22:28

We knew she would be like it, didn't we?

1:22:281:22:31

Yeah, I knew my mother would be like that

1:22:311:22:33

and I think it was a bit of a...

1:22:331:22:35

sort of, a shock for her as well, cos, sort of,

1:22:351:22:37

everything's happened so quickly.

1:22:371:22:39

-Where we are now...

-To get back together.

1:22:391:22:42

And get married and come to Australia,

1:22:421:22:44

so, it's probably been quite a lot for her to take in, as well.

1:22:441:22:47

I mean, they're obviously concerned

1:22:481:22:51

that we emigrated to New Zealand and we came back.

1:22:511:22:55

I think they just hope we're doing the right thing for the girls.

1:22:551:22:59

My mum did look a bit upset.

1:23:011:23:03

You know, all her grandchildren will live halfway round the world.

1:23:031:23:07

Seeing messages has reminded the Wallaces

1:23:101:23:13

of just how painful another move could be for them.

1:23:131:23:16

After all the family have been through,

1:23:161:23:19

can Australia really offer a future worth the risk?

1:23:191:23:22

As their week draws to a close,

1:23:221:23:24

it's time for them to make their final choice.

1:23:241:23:28

Emotionally, it's been quite draining, really, you know?

1:23:281:23:31

It's a big risk coming out to Australia, I suppose.

1:23:311:23:33

I haven't done it before.

1:23:331:23:35

You'll have to think about everything, really.

1:23:351:23:37

How it's going to affect the family, obviously, our parents, friends.

1:23:371:23:41

But ultimately it is about us starting a new life.

1:23:411:23:44

And, obviously, we got divorced for several different reasons

1:23:461:23:50

and I think we're more grown up, now, we know what we want.

1:23:501:23:54

Ben knows he has got responsibilities.

1:23:541:23:56

And we know the pitfalls now. We know the signs to look out for,

1:23:591:24:02

where we went wrong the last time, basically.

1:24:021:24:06

We went through the ups and the downs, and, you know

1:24:061:24:09

I believe our relationship is stronger now.

1:24:091:24:11

Ben and Amanda may have learned lessons

1:24:131:24:16

from their first attempt to emigrate...

1:24:161:24:18

..but their week in Australia has shown them that another move

1:24:201:24:23

won't come without its own heartaches and headaches.

1:24:231:24:28

So, will they choose a new start all over again?

1:24:281:24:31

ALL: Australia!

1:24:381:24:40

-It is nice weather, isn't it? And it's...

-Sometimes.

1:24:451:24:47

-And the opportunities are better.

-Yeah.

1:24:471:24:50

Australia's better than I ever thought.

1:24:501:24:54

It's always been something I've wanted to do.

1:24:541:24:56

We'll have a better lifestyle and it'll just be...better.

1:24:561:25:00

You know I've always wanted to come to Australia for the lifestyle

1:25:001:25:03

and the weather and the surfing, so that's why I voted Australia.

1:25:031:25:07

-And for the family.

-And for the family.

1:25:081:25:10

To give them opportunities they won't get back in the UK.

1:25:101:25:13

-So, when are we booking our tickets to come back?

-Next year.

1:25:131:25:17

The Wallaces had to face some tough times

1:25:221:25:26

in order to make their big decision to move.

1:25:261:25:29

After being home for a month,

1:25:301:25:32

I met Amanda and Ben to find out if their plans were still on track.

1:25:321:25:36

This has been a really important year for you both.

1:25:361:25:39

Well, for the whole family. You got remarried, so, congratulations.

1:25:391:25:42

-Thank you.

-I know the girls are delighted.

1:25:421:25:45

But taking that step to go back out and try it all over again

1:25:451:25:49

knowing that it went so badly wrong the first time,

1:25:491:25:54

were you very nervous about that?

1:25:541:25:56

I was. I was nervous about where we were going,

1:25:561:25:58

just cos I didn't particularly want to go back to Sydney, but...

1:25:581:26:02

No, I... You know, I thought it was an opportunity for us

1:26:041:26:07

to have a look round, and Aimee's desperate to go

1:26:071:26:10

and she was the one that was worst affected

1:26:101:26:12

through the divorce and everything, and she was so positive about going,

1:26:121:26:17

so I think her determination really inspired us all.

1:26:171:26:21

Driving us all, I suppose, yeah.

1:26:211:26:23

What lessons do you think you learned

1:26:231:26:25

from going to New Zealand that, sort of, changed your mind

1:26:251:26:28

and you were prepared to try again, this time in Australia?

1:26:281:26:31

Ben's going to put an effort in this time!

1:26:311:26:34

Yeah, I went in with the wrong attitude, I suppose, last time

1:26:341:26:38

and this time I know what to expect, so I know what to look for.

1:26:381:26:41

Yeah. And you know you've got to work!

1:26:411:26:43

And for you, Ben, is that the big difference?

1:26:431:26:45

Did you feel with New Zealand it was, sort of, more, perhaps,

1:26:451:26:48

of a holiday time than knuckling down?

1:26:481:26:52

Yeah. I know not to do that this time,

1:26:521:26:54

I know I've got to get a job for the family, basically.

1:26:541:26:56

Is that the proviso? Is it? Come on, let's be honest, now.

1:26:561:27:01

He's going to find full-time work...

1:27:011:27:03

-Definitely.

-..and he's allowed to surf

1:27:031:27:05

at the weekends, or the evenings.

1:27:051:27:07

And in the mornings if he gets up earlier.

1:27:071:27:09

That sounds like the perfect compromise.

1:27:091:27:11

-Yep, I'm happy with that.

-And it is warmer over there

1:27:111:27:14

-so I might don a wetsuit and have a go myself.

-Yeah.

1:27:141:27:17

How fantastic! So, my last question is

1:27:171:27:19

how quickly are you going to be returning?

1:27:191:27:22

Hopefully in the next 12 months to 18 months.

1:27:231:27:26

-We'll be living in...

-The sunshine.

-Yeah. On the beach.

1:27:261:27:30

Well, it sounds amazing.

1:27:301:27:31

We're sitting here today and it's pretty cold in Wales today.

1:27:311:27:36

For the Wallace family, the week in Sydney gave them a chance

1:27:411:27:45

to revisit their dream of a new life down under.

1:27:451:27:49

Both Ben and Mandy agreed

1:27:491:27:50

they've learnt from their previous experiences

1:27:501:27:52

and are now keen for a fresh start for the whole family,

1:27:521:27:56

this time, in Australia.

1:27:561:27:58

It sounds like exciting times ahead for the Wallaces.
