Many couples dream of moving down under

0:00:020:00:05

in search of a better life, but, for some,

0:00:050:00:08

the reality of emigrating is a tougher challenge

0:00:080:00:11

than they could ever have imagined.

0:00:110:00:13

Andrew Treagust has high ambitions for a new life down under.

0:00:140:00:18

I could so do this for a living. It could be my office every day.

0:00:180:00:22

But wife Emma's just not convinced.

0:00:220:00:24

I like the idea of it, um, I don't know if I like the reality of it.

0:00:240:00:28

So, he's on a mission to persuade her.

0:00:280:00:30

-That view is stunning, isn't it?

-But when the figures don't add up...

0:00:300:00:34

We can't make this model work. It's got to be rethought.

0:00:340:00:37

..will his dream be over?

0:00:370:00:39

With its amazing scenery and diverse culture, New Zealand has long been

0:01:030:01:07

a place of interest for British citizens looking to emigrate.

0:01:070:01:11

But, of the estimated 12,000 who make the move every year,

0:01:110:01:14

almost a quarter return.

0:01:140:01:16

Proof indeed that achieving a dream lifestyle on

0:01:160:01:19

the other side of the world isn't as easy as you think.

0:01:190:01:22

Ahead of Andrew and Emma is just one week to explore whether

0:01:240:01:28

New Zealand could give their family the happier, healthier lifestyle

0:01:280:01:32

they've always dreamt of. At the end of their trip,

0:01:320:01:35

they'll have to make a heartbreaking decision -

0:01:350:01:38

whether to stay in the UK or leave family and loved ones behind

0:01:380:01:42

and move to the other side of the world.

0:01:420:01:45

To get from the UK to New Zealand, Emma, Andrew

0:01:500:01:53

and the boys have endured 25 hours in the air.

0:01:530:01:57

It's a long and difficult journey for anyone,

0:01:570:01:59

but, with two young children in tow, how was the flight?

0:01:590:02:03

It feels a really long time when you're on the plane, doesn't it?

0:02:030:02:06

-Yeah, you wouldn't want to do it all the time...

-No.

-..that's for sure.

0:02:060:02:09

But, it was better than I expected with two young children.

0:02:090:02:13

-And we didn't have much sleep, really, did we?

-No.

0:02:130:02:15

-But no toddler meltdown, so it was good.

-Yeah!

0:02:150:02:20

It definitely feels real now we're here and really exciting as well.

0:02:210:02:25

-Yeah.

-It's going to be a big adventure.

-And there's an aeroplane.

0:02:250:02:28

-And there's an aeroplane.

-Aeroplane!

-I know.

0:02:280:02:31

Albert's still thinking about how he got here,

0:02:310:02:34

but Andrew and Emma's thoughts have turned to the week ahead.

0:02:340:02:37

I'm really looking forward to experiencing being here as

0:02:370:02:40

if we live here, I think that's going to be a really important indicator.

0:02:400:02:44

-Yeah.

-That's really where my hopes...

0:02:440:02:47

-And my fears are is that we're really split on our opinions.

-Yeah, true.

0:02:470:02:51

I just hope we either like it or dislike it.

0:02:510:02:54

-Yeah, I don't want to come away more confused.

-Exactly, yeah.

0:02:540:02:59

Where are we? We're in...?

0:02:590:03:01

-New Zealand.

-New Zealand, that's right!

-Yay!

0:03:010:03:04

Young Albert and George are blissfully unaware -

0:03:040:03:07

this week, their mum and dad will have to make

0:03:070:03:09

one of the toughest decisions of their lives.

0:03:090:03:12

Back in the UK, Andrew Treagust and Emma Woodward live with

0:03:150:03:19

two-year-old Albert and baby George, just outside Brighton.

0:03:190:03:23

Life's good in the UK - a beautiful home, two lovely children

0:03:230:03:27

and plenty of friends and family to support them,

0:03:270:03:31

but Andrew wants to give it all up for a new life down under.

0:03:310:03:34

We've worked really hard and I think we've probably worked too hard,

0:03:340:03:38

especially over the last ten years.

0:03:380:03:41

In 2012, Andrew resigned from a high-powered career in the city,

0:03:440:03:48

a job he loved, but which eventually wore him down.

0:03:480:03:52

It was very hard work, and the stressful nature of

0:03:520:03:56

just being on all the time, was probably too much.

0:03:560:04:01

If he does something, he has to do it to the nth degree

0:04:010:04:04

and it has to be perfect and it has to be the best

0:04:040:04:06

and, um, I think that he feels he feels like he needs a complete break

0:04:060:04:10

and a complete change from the life that he has here in order to

0:04:100:04:14

be able to not do that any more.

0:04:140:04:16

We've worked to generate money to buy a nice house and

0:04:160:04:20

do all those things that you need to do, and, during that process,

0:04:200:04:24

we've realised that there's more to life than just working.

0:04:240:04:28

He could just go and be...

0:04:280:04:31

relaxed Andrew, rather than driven Andrew,

0:04:310:04:35

and I think that's what New Zealand represents to him.

0:04:350:04:38

Andrew knows exactly what he wants from New Zealand.

0:04:400:04:43

It's got to give us a great house, it's got to give us

0:04:430:04:46

a great lifestyle, it's got to give us community,

0:04:460:04:48

it's got to give us good schooling, and it's got to be

0:04:480:04:51

somewhere that we want to live for the rest of our lives.

0:04:510:04:54

But Emma's torn over a potential move.

0:04:540:04:56

I don't know if I really want to go. I like the idea of it.

0:04:560:04:59

I don't know if I like the reality of it, to be honest with you!

0:04:590:05:03

And her career in the UK could prove a huge sticking point.

0:05:050:05:09

I love my job. I'm passionate about what I do.

0:05:090:05:12

I can really use my knowledge in order to help people effect positive

0:05:120:05:17

change in their lives and that's a great thing to be able to do.

0:05:170:05:21

Having left school with few qualifications,

0:05:210:05:23

Emma's spent more than ten years striving to achieve her dream -

0:05:230:05:27

to become an educational psychologist.

0:05:270:05:29

Abandoning it would be an enormous ask.

0:05:290:05:32

To give that up and move somewhere else that might not be as...

0:05:320:05:37

as I want it to be, is really hard.

0:05:370:05:41

Emma also dreads the thought of breaking strong family bonds

0:05:410:05:44

in the UK, especially taking Albert away from her mum, his beloved nana.

0:05:440:05:49

They adore each other.

0:05:490:05:50

They meet on some kind of level, it's bizarre to see

0:05:500:05:54

a 60-year-old woman and a two-year-old, but they just...

0:05:540:05:57

They connect and they just love each other.

0:05:570:05:59

I've seen such an amazing side of my mum since Albert was born...

0:05:590:06:04

that...

0:06:040:06:06

..I don't think she deserves me to take him away from her.

0:06:060:06:10

Emma is prepared to give New Zealand a try.

0:06:120:06:15

If there's a possibility that our family life could be...

0:06:150:06:19

more equally shared out in terms of happiness and potential

0:06:190:06:24

and enjoyability and all of those things somewhere else then

0:06:240:06:27

I have a responsibility to go and explore that.

0:06:270:06:30

That's about being a family, isn't it?

0:06:300:06:31

That's about compromise, that's about sharing.

0:06:310:06:34

But if she doesn't like what she sees,

0:06:340:06:36

Andrew's dream could be over for ever.

0:06:360:06:38

Emma has to like it, or it's not going to work for any of us.

0:06:380:06:42

If Emma says no, then no is the way it's going to go.

0:06:420:06:47

The Treagust Woodwards face a massive dilemma -

0:06:470:06:49

Andrew's convinced New Zealand's outdoor lifestyle would

0:06:490:06:53

offer his family a better future,

0:06:530:06:55

but, unless he can persuade Emma it's worth giving up a job she's

0:06:550:06:58

fought so hard to get, his long-held dream could come to nothing.

0:06:580:07:02

And with such strong emotional ties in the UK,

0:07:020:07:05

could leaving loved ones behind prove a step too far?

0:07:050:07:08

For their trial week in New Zealand, Andrew, Emma

0:07:130:07:16

and the boys are visiting Auckland.

0:07:160:07:18

Home for their stay is a two-bedroom cottage

0:07:180:07:20

on the outskirts of Devonport,

0:07:200:07:22

a seaside village just a ten-minute ferry ride from the city centre,

0:07:220:07:26

but will it be the introduction to Kiwi living they're hoping for?

0:07:260:07:29

What do you think?

0:07:290:07:31

-I think it's really cute.

-It is cute.

-Yeah.

0:07:320:07:35

-It feels quite quirky, doesn't it?

-It does feel quite quirky.

0:07:350:07:39

-Nice kitchen - it's nice, it's just small.

-It is, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:07:390:07:43

Albert's already found somewhere to sleep, but what about Mum and Dad?

0:07:430:07:47

-Is it the master bedroom?

-Yeah, it looks like it's the master bedroom.

0:07:470:07:52

-And, again, it's nice.

-It's nice and it's quiet.

0:07:520:07:55

Emma's quite taken with the place.

0:07:550:07:57

I actually really like the feel of the house and I like the fence

0:07:570:08:01

and I like the rooms all going out to the decking area.

0:08:010:08:04

For a base, it's a really lovely little...

0:08:040:08:06

place to be staying.

0:08:060:08:08

-But Andrew isn't overly impressed.

-This will be good for the week.

0:08:080:08:11

-Yeah, definitely.

-And I think the boys will really enjoy it.

-Yeah.

0:08:110:08:14

But a house that we buy would need to be of a different size.

0:08:140:08:17

With Albert still out for the count, Emma and Andrew's thoughts have

0:08:170:08:21

already turned to the big decision they face at the end of the week.

0:08:210:08:25

At the moment, I'm quite...

0:08:250:08:28

tired from the journey, and that tells me something -

0:08:280:08:30

it's a really long way, you know, so that's already

0:08:300:08:32

kind of making me think...

0:08:320:08:34

You know, it's a big separation from your family

0:08:340:08:37

and it is a massive effort to get here.

0:08:370:08:40

I'm worried, um...

0:08:400:08:44

that we're not going to be able to afford the property that we

0:08:440:08:46

think we are going to be able to afford.

0:08:460:08:49

I've got a lot to lose if we do leave the UK and I want to make sure

0:08:490:08:53

that what I'm leaving behind is being replaced by something better.

0:08:530:08:56

But, in spite of their fears,

0:08:560:08:58

they're both looking forward to what lies ahead.

0:08:580:09:01

I'm quite excited about it. I'm quite up for it at the moment.

0:09:010:09:05

It's really interesting just to be here...

0:09:050:09:08

and it be turning to reality now.

0:09:080:09:12

Back in the UK, Emma and Andrew live with Albert and baby George

0:09:200:09:24

in a four-bedroom detached house in Saltdean just outside Brighton.

0:09:240:09:29

They love their house, so what kind of home

0:09:290:09:31

would lure them to New Zealand?

0:09:310:09:33

It's got to be a good size, four bedrooms,

0:09:340:09:37

and, possibly, somewhere for guests to stay.

0:09:370:09:41

It's got to be fairly open plan, it's got to be self-cleaning!

0:09:410:09:45

THEY LAUGH Just bright and airy and comfortable.

0:09:450:09:49

Hopefully, near to the sea, so that we can go surfing quite a lot.

0:09:490:09:53

I want it to be fantastic.

0:09:530:09:54

Andrew and Emma own a number of properties and have set

0:09:540:09:57

themselves a healthy starting budget

0:09:570:09:59

of £540,000 for a home down under.

0:09:590:10:03

I don't want to have to do any work, I want to be able,

0:10:030:10:06

if we're going to move, to just move in.

0:10:060:10:08

We've done enough.

0:10:080:10:09

We've renovated house after house after house.

0:10:090:10:12

I don't want to move to another country, a different job,

0:10:120:10:14

and have to start renovating.

0:10:140:10:16

-Not at all. That's not what the move is about.

-No.

0:10:160:10:18

Finding the right house down under will be crucial

0:10:220:10:25

if Andrew's to persuade Emma to make the move.

0:10:250:10:28

So, today, we'll show them three properties based on what

0:10:280:10:31

they've said they want and need.

0:10:310:10:33

After they've seen each house, we'll reveal how much it costs.

0:10:330:10:36

Leaving Albert and George with a childminder for the day,

0:10:380:10:41

their property search begins at the newly-built

0:10:410:10:43

Kensington Park development on the Hibiscus Coast.

0:10:430:10:47

20 minutes north of Auckland,

0:10:470:10:48

this modern four-bedroom house is close to the beach,

0:10:480:10:51

which should be perfect for surf-mad Andrew,

0:10:510:10:54

but will it have the space they're after?

0:10:540:10:57

-It's a big house!

-Yeah, it's a big garage.

0:10:570:11:00

-And it's a nice garage as well.

-Yeah.

0:11:000:11:01

Early days, but Andrew seems happy with the size so far.

0:11:030:11:06

-Look at that view.

-Oh, it's a lovely view.

0:11:060:11:10

-And it's big.

-Yeah.

0:11:100:11:13

-Oh, it's nice. It's a proper family area, isn't it?

-Hmm.

0:11:130:11:16

It feels like it, doesn't it?

0:11:160:11:18

Open-plan kitchen.

0:11:180:11:20

-Not much of a garden.

-Not much of a garden, is there?!

0:11:200:11:24

-It's kind of an uphill yard, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:11:240:11:27

The outdoor space might not be perfect, but Emma's still impressed.

0:11:270:11:31

-A really nice kitchen.

-It is a nice kitchen.

-Yeah.

0:11:310:11:34

-I like the work surfaces.

-And you could cook... Look at that view

0:11:340:11:37

-when you're cooking.

-It's really nice.

0:11:370:11:38

You could just cook looking at your sea view.

0:11:380:11:40

-You'd want to do your washing up, wouldn't you?

-No!

0:11:400:11:44

The views have put a much more positive spin on things

0:11:440:11:47

and the higher you go, the better they get.

0:11:470:11:49

-Look at that!

-Wow! That's got the wow factor, hasn't it?

0:11:500:11:53

-What a view.

-Now, if that doesn't entice you to get up

0:11:530:11:56

and go surfing in the morning, I don't know what will. That's amazing.

0:11:560:12:00

That is gorgeous and the balcony as well.

0:12:000:12:02

You wouldn't be able to wake up unhappy with that view, would you?

0:12:020:12:05

It's not a large room though.

0:12:050:12:06

Uh, oh. It had looked almost perfect.

0:12:060:12:10

As this development is still being built,

0:12:100:12:12

will potential neighbours be a turn off too?

0:12:120:12:15

-You feel really high up, which I really like.

-Yeah, I like that too.

0:12:150:12:18

So, you don't just get the view, it just feels like you're not

0:12:180:12:21

-so overlooked up here.

-Yeah.

0:12:210:12:23

Even though, your neighbours are really near, aren't they?

0:12:230:12:25

But, they're not...

0:12:250:12:27

-They're sideways, you're not feeling encroached upon, are you?

-No.

0:12:270:12:30

That's a relief, as, with four bedrooms, this house

0:12:300:12:33

certainly has the space the couple want for visiting friends or family.

0:12:330:12:37

-But that would work really well as a guest bed, wouldn't it?

-Yeah.

0:12:370:12:40

-It's the...

-Would you want to use it more often,

0:12:410:12:44

-cos it's got this lovely view?

-Yeah.

0:12:440:12:47

This house has everything they've been looking for, but...

0:12:470:12:51

I'm not sure if I'm absolutely smitten with it.

0:12:510:12:53

I don't know if I've got to say I have to buy this house right now,

0:12:530:12:56

but what would you not like about it? That's the thing.

0:12:560:12:59

Will their impressive £540,000 budget cover it?

0:12:590:13:03

-So, what do you think it's going to be?

-I'm not sure.

0:13:030:13:06

It's going to be a lot, isn't it?

0:13:060:13:07

-Yeah. Shall we find out?

-Let's find out.

0:13:070:13:09

Wow! £648,500!

0:13:110:13:13

That's more than £100,000 over budget, but...

0:13:130:13:18

-That's good.

-That's a lot of house for your money, isn't it?

-Yeah,

0:13:180:13:21

-for that view.

-For that view.

0:13:210:13:22

I'm surprised, I thought it was going to be nearer 900,000.

0:13:220:13:25

That is really good. Let's buy it!

0:13:250:13:27

It may be over budget, but,

0:13:290:13:30

thanks to a property portfolio in the UK,

0:13:300:13:33

Andrew and Emma would have the ability to increase

0:13:330:13:35

their spending power, so they're not put off.

0:13:350:13:38

Next up is a spacious six-bedroom house in Mairangi Bay,

0:13:410:13:45

also on the North Shore.

0:13:450:13:46

With fabulous beaches and excellent kindergarten,

0:13:460:13:49

and a lively community, this area could be perfect for

0:13:490:13:53

Andrew and Emma's young family, but will they agree?

0:13:530:13:56

-That's a really interesting shape, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:13:560:13:59

It's quite close to that main road.

0:13:590:14:01

It's really close to the main road, isn't it?

0:14:010:14:03

Which worries me with two young boys.

0:14:030:14:04

-And you can hear the road as well.

-Not the best start,

0:14:040:14:07

but will the main living area of the house win them over?

0:14:070:14:10

Ah, here's the kitchen. I like it.

0:14:100:14:13

It's a nice through area, isn't it?

0:14:130:14:15

-Oh, it's really nice.

-It is very long and narrow.

0:14:150:14:17

No, it's not. It's...I do, I think I prefer it to the other house.

0:14:170:14:20

-I feel it...

-It's not as good as the other house.

0:14:200:14:23

It feels more homely, I think.

0:14:230:14:24

It does feel more homely, but it's just not as open and airy.

0:14:240:14:29

Maybe it's cos it feels...lived in, because this is somebody's house.

0:14:290:14:33

It is lived in.

0:14:330:14:34

Looks like Andrew and Emma have different opinions on this one.

0:14:360:14:41

See, I like that it feels open-plan, but it's got defined areas

0:14:410:14:44

and I quite like that, because where we live at the moment,

0:14:440:14:46

-it's all open-plan.

-Yeah.

0:14:460:14:48

And it's lovely cos you can see the kids,

0:14:480:14:51

but if one area's messy, the whole area's messy.

0:14:510:14:54

But they're small, defined areas, aren't they?

0:14:540:14:56

It's like...the rooms feel quite small to me.

0:14:560:14:59

Size is still an issue for Andrew

0:14:590:15:01

and it's not the only problem they've noticed.

0:15:010:15:03

There's a reason why that's drawn, isn't it?

0:15:030:15:06

Because that's obviously quite overlooked.

0:15:060:15:09

And there's a shared access right outside of the house.

0:15:090:15:12

-Yeah, there's a lot of stuff that you can't control over here.

-Exactly.

0:15:120:15:15

I'm not sure this is going to be the house that convinces either

0:15:150:15:19

Andrew or Emma to make the move down under.

0:15:190:15:22

And then the kids' bedroom is slightly bigger...

0:15:220:15:24

It's a good room, apart from its view onto the road...

0:15:260:15:29

..which I don't like.

0:15:300:15:32

-They're not huge bedrooms, are they? None of them really.

-No.

0:15:320:15:36

There weren't huge bedrooms in the other house really though,

0:15:360:15:38

-were they?

-Bigger than this.

0:15:380:15:40

One thing this house does have that the last one didn't is

0:15:400:15:43

the granny annexe that the couple are looking for.

0:15:430:15:45

It's a completely different spin on it, doesn't it?

0:15:450:15:48

This is perfect for when people come and stay

0:15:480:15:50

-and they literally walk themselves down and there's not a problem.

-Yeah.

0:15:500:15:54

And you can have friends with kids stay because there's two spaces.

0:15:540:15:58

-Yeah.

-The grandparents would be happy as, wouldn't they?

-Yeah.

0:15:580:16:02

-It'd be lovely.

-That's something they agree on,

0:16:020:16:04

but will the garden offer the space

0:16:040:16:06

-the couple would like for Albert and George?

-It's OK.

0:16:060:16:08

It's not much of a garden though, is it?

0:16:080:16:10

No, the other one didn't have much of a garden, though, did it?

0:16:100:16:13

And there are two big deck areas and a garden, so, actually,

0:16:130:16:17

outside space is quite big, it's just all on different levels.

0:16:170:16:20

-Do you think I'm being quite fussy?

-What? You, Andrew?

0:16:200:16:23

-Yeah.

-You have to be fussy, I think, but, still,

0:16:230:16:26

there's not much of a garden space.

0:16:260:16:28

So, I suppose we'd better go and see how much it's worth, really.

0:16:280:16:31

If we can't afford it, there's not much point.

0:16:310:16:33

Will their starting budget of £540,000 cover the cost

0:16:340:16:38

if they did agree to go for this house?

0:16:380:16:41

I think about 700 to 750.

0:16:410:16:44

-I reckon 850.

-Let's see.

0:16:440:16:46

-Wow!

-There you go.

0:16:480:16:50

687.

0:16:500:16:52

It's almost £150,000 over their budget, but finding the extra funds

0:16:520:16:57

doesn't seem to be a problem for Andrew and Emma.

0:16:570:17:01

That's a good price for what you get, isn't it?

0:17:010:17:03

Yeah, it's interesting.

0:17:030:17:04

And now confusing.

0:17:040:17:06

-It still doesn't make me want to go and buy it right now.

-No.

0:17:060:17:10

It's affordable, but Andrew's heart isn't in this house.

0:17:100:17:13

With two down, let's hope the last property can offer the couple

0:17:130:17:16

everything they're looking for.

0:17:160:17:18

It's a four-bedroom house in Torbay, also on the North Shore

0:17:180:17:21

and close to the beach.

0:17:210:17:23

The house has a completely separate granny annexe, perfect for

0:17:230:17:26

visiting parents, and offers the open-plan living the couple love.

0:17:260:17:30

From the outside, it looks promising.

0:17:300:17:33

Yeah, it's lovely.

0:17:350:17:37

-But will the interiors be what they're after?

-Wow.

0:17:370:17:40

-It's nice.

-Yeah.

-Oh, my gosh, it's nice.

0:17:400:17:42

That's OK, isn't it?

0:17:480:17:51

Not too shabby, is it?

0:17:510:17:53

That view is stunning, isn't it?

0:17:530:17:55

And it's all about being outside and eating and barbecuing.

0:17:550:17:59

-Oh, it just feels so nice, it feels quite secluded, doesn't it?

-But...

0:17:590:18:03

You can hear the road though.

0:18:030:18:05

Can you get to the kitchen?

0:18:050:18:06

DISTANT TRAFFIC

0:18:060:18:08

-Yeah.

-The road noise could be a problem, but can Emma see beyond it?

0:18:080:18:12

Well, it is absolutely beautiful,

0:18:120:18:14

it's just also...you want to kind of...

0:18:140:18:17

..take everything out and start again.

0:18:170:18:19

-It's just not done to my taste at all.

-Yeah.

0:18:190:18:21

First the road, then the decor... Are cracks beginning to show?

0:18:210:18:25

-It's quite a small room.

-They're all small bedrooms.

0:18:250:18:28

-Do you know when you're kind of coming into the house...

-Yeah.

0:18:280:18:30

-..and it looks really quite imposing?

-It's imposing, isn't it?

0:18:300:18:33

-Definitely not as big inside as you think it's going to be.

-No.

0:18:330:18:37

Especially when you consider that there's the granny flat downstairs.

0:18:370:18:40

As it stands now, this may not be the house for Emma or Andrew,

0:18:400:18:45

but could the cost change their mind?

0:18:450:18:47

I don't feel confident about making a guess. What do you think?

0:18:470:18:49

-I think slightly more than the last one.

-OK, what about...?

0:18:490:18:53

I just think it's so central in Torbay and it's on a nice road...

0:18:530:18:57

-About 750?

-I think about 7.

-OK.

0:18:570:19:00

My goodness!

0:19:020:19:04

-That's great value.

-Really good value.

0:19:040:19:07

£521,000.

0:19:070:19:10

That's almost £20,000 under budget.

0:19:100:19:14

-If you spent...what? £50,000 changing it...

-Mm-hm.

0:19:140:19:17

..that's still...

0:19:170:19:19

..70 grand cheaper than the last cheapest house.

0:19:200:19:24

I'm really surprised.

0:19:240:19:26

Exploring the local housing market has been

0:19:260:19:28

a real eye-opener for Andrew and Emma.

0:19:280:19:30

Property one was something of a show stopper,

0:19:300:19:33

and less expensive than the couple expected.

0:19:330:19:36

The second house was £147,000 over their starting budget,

0:19:360:19:41

but the price didn't seem to put them off.

0:19:410:19:43

And although property three didn't live up to first impressions,

0:19:430:19:47

it's price tag meant they could afford

0:19:470:19:49

to turn it into their dream home.

0:19:490:19:51

So, based on what they know now,

0:19:520:19:54

will the couple vote for property in the UK or New Zealand?

0:19:540:19:59

We've had an interesting day looking at properties and,

0:19:590:20:01

based on that, we vote for...

0:20:010:20:03

BOTH: New Zealand!

0:20:100:20:12

It was a good day, wasn't it?

0:20:140:20:16

A really good day.

0:20:160:20:17

I was really surprised that you got that much property for your money.

0:20:170:20:20

-Yeah.

-Amazing locations, everything that we asked for on spec...

0:20:200:20:24

Big enough for the family.

0:20:240:20:25

-Big enough for friends and family to come and stay.

-Yeah.

0:20:250:20:28

And amazing views and in a lovely location.

0:20:280:20:31

I don't know what else you could ask for, really.

0:20:310:20:33

It's a great start for Andrew.

0:20:330:20:36

Emma's first vote for New Zealand is a big step in the right direction.

0:20:360:20:39

The desire to come to New Zealand has always been

0:20:440:20:47

about the relaxed outdoor lifestyle they could enjoy as a family.

0:20:470:20:51

So, will a day out of Kiwi style living be enough to keep

0:20:510:20:54

the dream alive?

0:20:540:20:56

Andrew and Emma are both keen surfers, so we've taken them to

0:20:570:21:00

Piha Beach, a popular surfing spot just 40 minutes drive from the city.

0:21:000:21:05

While baby George is looked after by a child minder, it's a chance for

0:21:050:21:09

Andrew to show Emma, and Albert,

0:21:090:21:11

the kind of lifestyle he's been dreaming about.

0:21:110:21:13

-I think we'd come down every weekend, wouldn't we?

-Yeah!

0:21:150:21:17

It's so close to the city and it's such a beautiful place,

0:21:170:21:20

not just a beautiful beach.

0:21:200:21:22

Previously self-taught, the day starts with a quick lesson

0:21:220:21:25

for Mum and Dad, while Albert plays on the beach.

0:21:250:21:27

So, by getting your feet 100% right,

0:21:270:21:30

your board becomes an extension of your body.

0:21:300:21:32

-'It's so much fun.

-Yeah.

0:21:320:21:35

'Not the kind of surf you get very often in the UK, really.'

0:21:350:21:38

-Well, where we live, anyway.

-No.

0:21:380:21:40

Albert might be a little young to fully appreciate the surf,

0:21:400:21:44

but can Andrew and Emma picture this for his future?

0:21:440:21:46

We'd love to see the boys growing up in a wet suit and just surfing

0:21:460:21:50

every weekend, getting really good at it, being really natural.

0:21:500:21:53

Just being happy, enjoying it, you know?

0:21:530:21:55

It's the sort of thing that I suppose, we wish we'd done as kids

0:21:550:21:58

and it'd be really lovely to afford

0:21:580:22:00

-Albert and George that, wouldn't it, really?

-Definitely.

0:22:000:22:03

After their morning riding waves,

0:22:140:22:16

the couple take the boys to a nearby park for some playtime.

0:22:160:22:20

Oh, there's a cool ship down here...

0:22:200:22:22

Emma knows the day so far is everything Andrew's been hoping for.

0:22:220:22:26

It ticks a lot of boxes for him in terms of the kind of work-life

0:22:260:22:29

balance and getting that kind of adrenaline hit in a lifestyle

0:22:290:22:32

rather than in kind of a high-pressure career, which is

0:22:320:22:35

where he seems to get it in the UK.

0:22:350:22:37

But is Andrew confident he can get Emma to agree to this

0:22:370:22:40

lifestyle on a permanent basis?

0:22:400:22:43

She seems really comfortable here and, um,

0:22:430:22:46

'when we've been driving about, she says sometimes that she thinks she

0:22:460:22:50

'could live here, so I think that's a really good indication of

0:22:500:22:53

'the way things might go in the future.'

0:22:530:22:55

Watching the kids here has been brilliant,

0:22:550:22:57

I don't feel so far away from home. It feels familiar, but...different.

0:22:570:23:02

It's... It feels relaxed and then I think about being at home...

0:23:020:23:08

I don't know, really.

0:23:080:23:10

They're all kind of...

0:23:100:23:11

There's no clear tipping point at the moment.

0:23:150:23:17

Will Andrew be disappointed as the family choose

0:23:170:23:20

between a lifestyle in New Zealand or the UK?

0:23:200:23:23

-Ouch!

-Sorry.

-I got flagged on the head!

0:23:230:23:27

ALBERT LAUGHS

0:23:270:23:28

We've had a lovely day today and, based on that, we vote for...

0:23:280:23:32

-New Zealand.

-New Zealand.

0:23:400:23:42

-New Zealand.

-Yay!

0:23:420:23:45

You're fantastic, aren't you? You've got sand all over your face!

0:23:450:23:48

You said, "New Zealand!"

0:23:480:23:50

Emma's vote for New Zealand may have given him some confidence,

0:23:550:23:59

but Andrew knows there's a much bigger battle ahead.

0:23:590:24:01

Back in the UK, Emma loves her job as an educational psychologist.

0:24:030:24:07

It's a career she's worked hard for.

0:24:070:24:10

I kind of went back to college in the evenings and worked and got...

0:24:100:24:14

the GCSEs that I needed and then did an Access course

0:24:140:24:17

and then took myself off to University and did my degree

0:24:170:24:22

and then worked for three years

0:24:220:24:25

to save up enough money really to

0:24:250:24:29

take another three years out to do my doctorate.

0:24:290:24:31

I'm really passionate about my job, it's really important to me

0:24:310:24:35

and it enables me to empower people to make change in their own lives.

0:24:350:24:39

Giving all this up would be a massive wrench.

0:24:390:24:42

I feel quite entrenched in my role here,

0:24:420:24:45

I feel quite loyal to where I work, um,

0:24:450:24:48

I feel quite loyal to my colleagues and my boss,

0:24:480:24:51

because it's an amazing place to work and I'm going to have to,

0:24:510:24:55

potentially, give all that up if we move.

0:24:550:24:59

Andrew's dreaming of a complete career change,

0:24:590:25:02

if the couple did move.

0:25:020:25:04

I'd love to be a snowboard instructor.

0:25:040:25:06

I can imagine waking up and being really excited

0:25:060:25:11

about going to the mountain and having the mountain as your office.

0:25:110:25:14

You know, it's a fantastic dream to have.

0:25:140:25:18

But unless Emma can find the right post,

0:25:180:25:20

his dreams could come to nothing.

0:25:200:25:23

It's a deal breaker for me, I suppose. It is a deal breaker for me.

0:25:230:25:26

'You can't change the way that you feel about it and,

0:25:260:25:29

'if it doesn't feel right, I genuinely don't know'

0:25:290:25:33

if I'd be able to do it.

0:25:330:25:34

The stakes are high. While the boys are looked after by a childminder,

0:25:350:25:39

Andrew and Emma set out to explore work opportunities in Auckland.

0:25:390:25:43

Andrew's dream rests on Emma being satisfied

0:25:430:25:46

she can get the type of work she wants.

0:25:460:25:49

I think, if this bit doesn't come right then, obviously,

0:25:490:25:52

it doesn't really matter whether I prefer the rest of it or not, um...

0:25:520:25:56

because I'm going to be the main breadwinner.

0:25:560:25:58

We've arranged for Emma to meet a clinical psychologist

0:25:580:26:01

at the Waitemata District Health Board.

0:26:010:26:03

-Hi!

-How are you? I'm Tina. I'm the psychology professional leader here.

0:26:030:26:08

-So, this is the sort of place that, um, you would be working...

-Mm-hm.

0:26:080:26:12

..when you're working in a team. It's open-plan, most of the offices.

0:26:120:26:16

-Yeah.

-Across town, Andrew's pursuing his dream

0:26:160:26:19

to become a snowboard instructor at

0:26:190:26:21

New Zealand's only indoor snow sports facility

0:26:210:26:24

and he can't wait to hit the slopes.

0:26:240:26:27

I could so do this for a living. It could be my office every day.

0:26:310:26:35

Back in the real world,

0:26:360:26:38

Emma's finding out about her work prospects.

0:26:380:26:40

Based on my CV, would I be able to get a job in New Zealand?

0:26:400:26:43

-Yes, very definitely. You're on our wanted list.

-OK.

0:26:430:26:47

Clinical psychologists and educational psychologists

0:26:470:26:50

are needed in New Zealand.

0:26:500:26:51

You've got experience and training in both those areas.

0:26:510:26:54

So, it's really a matter of what sort of area you'd like to work in?

0:26:540:26:58

OK, that's good news. Excellent.

0:26:580:27:00

That's a good start,

0:27:020:27:04

but Emma's worried working practices might be different in New Zealand.

0:27:040:27:08

You're, um, wanting to work more on the child and family area,

0:27:080:27:12

-aren't you?

-That's my qualification, yeah.

-Yes.

0:27:120:27:15

Usually, the psychologists work sort of across the whole, um,

0:27:150:27:18

sector, but you can specialise in the younger preschoolers

0:27:180:27:23

-or you can work with the older adolescents.

-OK.

0:27:230:27:25

You would work with these children, with their families, and with the

0:27:250:27:30

schools in order to try and sort of support them through their problems.

0:27:300:27:35

OK, that sounds very similar, actually.

0:27:350:27:37

That's one concern put to rest.

0:27:370:27:39

-What is the average day for a psychologist in New Zealand?

-Busy!

0:27:390:27:44

Same!

0:27:440:27:45

Back at the snow dome, Andrew's meeting manager Brad Alwyn

0:27:460:27:50

to find out what work opportunities could exist

0:27:500:27:52

at some of New Zealand's snowboard resorts.

0:27:520:27:55

So, I've been snowboarding about ten years.

0:27:550:27:57

I'm trying to be realistic about it being a career choice,

0:27:570:28:01

but really a lifestyle opportunity.

0:28:010:28:03

I'm just really exploring from your point of view whether it's

0:28:030:28:07

feasible and whether it's something that I could potentially do.

0:28:070:28:11

It's definitely feasible.

0:28:110:28:13

It's worth, once you arrive, doing a New Zealand based qualification.

0:28:130:28:16

Through the course, we can see how well you actually teach.

0:28:160:28:19

We can teach anyone to snowboard, we can't teach everyone to teach.

0:28:190:28:23

-Yeah.

-Once qualified, another concern for Andrew

0:28:230:28:26

is where the work would actually be.

0:28:260:28:28

We have North and South Island resorts,

0:28:280:28:30

so instructors live wherever they can sort of find the most work.

0:28:300:28:33

In a full day, an average ski instructor would probably

0:28:330:28:36

-work six hours during peak season.

-Mm-hm.

0:28:360:28:39

-Your part-time or casual instructor may only get two hours a week.

-OK.

0:28:390:28:42

The window that we have to make money and to ski

0:28:420:28:45

-and for you to be employed is four months, if we're lucky.

-Yeah.

0:28:450:28:49

That definitely wouldn't be a full-time option,

0:28:490:28:51

which would put even more pressure on Emma to earn a good salary.

0:28:510:28:55

Ultimately, how much as a psychologist would you get

0:28:550:28:58

paid to work in New Zealand?

0:28:580:29:00

Right, I don't want you to have a, you know,

0:29:000:29:02

look of shock on your face!

0:29:020:29:04

Um, with three to ten years' experience, it's nearer 61 to,

0:29:040:29:09

-say about, 97,000.

-OK.

0:29:090:29:12

Um, you'd be somewhere in the middle there, I'd imagine.

0:29:120:29:15

That's around £10,000 less than Emma earns back home.

0:29:150:29:19

When British psychologists hear about this, they go, "Oh, no!"

0:29:190:29:23

Because it is a drop, but then we sort of say,

0:29:230:29:25

"But the lifestyle's great!"

0:29:250:29:28

Could Andrew's potential income fill the shortfall?

0:29:280:29:31

As a rookie or a first-year employee,

0:29:310:29:33

you can expect to earn minimum wage or about 14.50 an hour.

0:29:330:29:37

As you up your qualifications, you can expect more money.

0:29:370:29:40

That wouldn't make up for the deficit in Emma's salary.

0:29:430:29:46

It may be his dream job, but Andrew would be earning the minimum wage.

0:29:460:29:51

Today's given the couple plenty of food for thought.

0:29:510:29:54

Could it be the end of Andrew's dream?

0:29:540:29:57

So, based on today, our vote is for...

0:29:580:30:01

Undecided.

0:30:120:30:13

Me too!

0:30:140:30:16

Why undecided?

0:30:160:30:18

Um, because, although I felt that some of my fears were allayed,

0:30:180:30:24

-um, I still really like my job at home.

-Hmm.

0:30:240:30:27

It's a great lifestyle opportunity, I'm just not sure I'm ready to take

0:30:270:30:30

a lifestyle opportunity right now.

0:30:300:30:33

Despite loving the lifestyle, the cold, hard facts remain.

0:30:370:30:41

If Emma and Andrew move here, they would be earning a lot less money.

0:30:410:30:46

'Although they own three properties, they're reluctant to sell them all

0:30:460:30:49

'in case a move down under doesn't work out.'

0:30:490:30:52

What they get for their home in Brighton could be crucial.

0:30:520:30:56

They believe it's worth around £350,000,

0:30:560:30:59

so we've sent round two estate agents to find out if they're right.

0:30:590:31:03

-Oh, this is nice.

-It's funny seeing your house on TV.

-Isn't it?

0:31:030:31:06

This is a really good room.

0:31:060:31:08

It's obviously been rooms which were formerly divided making one

0:31:080:31:11

big room now with a well-fitted kitchen with lots of storage

0:31:110:31:16

and a good built-in cooker.

0:31:160:31:19

-ALBERT:

-That is my house.

0:31:190:31:21

That's right, that's yours and baby George's room.

0:31:210:31:23

'OK, great to see a utility room,'

0:31:230:31:25

that's a real selling feature, especially when you've got open-plan

0:31:250:31:28

living cos you really don't want to have the noise of

0:31:280:31:30

the washing machine while you're entertaining friends.

0:31:300:31:34

(Where is she going?) THEY GASP

0:31:340:31:36

-Whose room is that?

-That's my bedroom!

-That's your bedroom.

0:31:360:31:40

Really light with a dual aspect makes a perfect kids'

0:31:400:31:43

bedroom or guest bedroom as well.

0:31:430:31:44

Now, this is a nice room.

0:31:440:31:46

Um, yeah, it's good to have those wardrobes right the way across and,

0:31:460:31:49

actually, the shower room with an oversized shower cubicle is great.

0:31:490:31:54

So, I'd have to say this is a really nice master bedroom.

0:31:540:31:57

So, a house of this size and style in this location,

0:31:570:32:00

I'd value at between

0:32:000:32:01

£285,000 and £295,000. So, £285,000 for a quick sale.

0:32:010:32:06

Not much.

0:32:060:32:08

For a house like this in this area,

0:32:080:32:09

I'd suggest an asking price of £380,000.

0:32:090:32:14

If we were looking for a quick sale,

0:32:140:32:16

we would expect to ask

0:32:160:32:18

£350,000.

0:32:180:32:19

-There's £100,000 range there.

-Yeah, massive.

-350, 360,

0:32:190:32:24

I think would be about right, wouldn't you? Realistically?

0:32:240:32:26

It's good news, but to help them

0:32:260:32:28

understand the financial side of life down under, we've

0:32:280:32:31

prepared a comparison of the cost of living in the UK and New Zealand.

0:32:310:32:36

They start with the weekly food shop.

0:32:360:32:38

Fruit...

0:32:380:32:39

-Fruit's quite a lot more expensive.

-It's quite a lot more expensive.

0:32:390:32:42

-Spinach is randomly quite a lot more expensive.

-Spinach...

0:32:420:32:45

£1.28 more expensive.

0:32:450:32:47

Semi-skimmed milk is £3.09 more expensive.

0:32:470:32:52

That is hugely more expensive. What's cheaper?

0:32:520:32:55

-Couscous is cheaper.

-OK.

-And flour is cheaper.

0:32:550:32:59

So, you have to do a lot of baking,

0:33:000:33:02

but almost everything is more expensive.

0:33:020:33:05

Unless Andrew and Emma change their shopping habits,

0:33:050:33:07

they'll be forking out substantially more for food in New Zealand.

0:33:070:33:12

-£37.43 more expensive.

-Wow.

0:33:120:33:16

That's an increase of more than £150 every month.

0:33:160:33:20

Basing their calculations on the final property they saw,

0:33:200:33:23

the couple move on to compare the bigger costs of living.

0:33:230:33:27

-So, our mortgage in the UK is £670.

-Mm-hm.

0:33:270:33:31

Our mortgage in New Zealand for the property that we

0:33:310:33:34

looked at would be £1,583.

0:33:340:33:38

So, that's an increase in mortgage payments of...

0:33:380:33:42

£913 a month.

0:33:420:33:45

-Which is...that's the big one. That's not great at all.

-No.

0:33:450:33:48

The figures aren't looking good.

0:33:480:33:51

Will the move turn out as little more than a pipe dream?

0:33:510:33:55

So, we'll be a total of

0:33:550:33:57

-£1,784 worse off...

-Worse off...

0:33:570:34:01

..on this model in New Zealand.

0:34:010:34:05

-And that's huge.

-That's massive.

-And we couldn't effectively do that.

0:34:070:34:11

With the figures weighing heavily on their minds, it's time for

0:34:110:34:14

Emma and Andrew to choose between finances in the UK or New Zealand.

0:34:140:34:19

So, based on what we've just been looking at, we vote for...

0:34:190:34:22

-Undecided.

-UK.

0:34:290:34:31

I just think that we can't make this model work

0:34:330:34:36

and it's got to be rethought.

0:34:360:34:39

That's why I voted undecided, because it's not...it doesn't kill

0:34:390:34:43

-the idea of moving to New Zealand completely dead.

-Yeah.

0:34:430:34:46

It just means we need to rethink how we would do it,

0:34:460:34:49

but there is wriggle room and that's why I've gone undecided.

0:34:490:34:52

-OK.

-Based on what we've done, it's just not working.

0:34:520:34:55

Simple as that. Yeah.

0:34:560:34:57

Emma and Andrew's trial week has revealed some harsh home truths,

0:35:030:35:07

but there's more to come.

0:35:070:35:08

Emma's always been worried about taking her children away from her

0:35:080:35:11

mum, so will watching messages from friends

0:35:110:35:14

and loved ones at home prove too heartbreaking?

0:35:140:35:17

While baby George takes a nap,

0:35:170:35:19

they settle down to watch the DVD together.

0:35:190:35:23

-Albert, look.

-Hi, Emma and the boys. Hope you're having a fab time.

0:35:230:35:28

What's that?

0:35:280:35:30

Hope you're having a lovely time in New Zealand

0:35:300:35:32

and we're missing you and we hope to see you very soon.

0:35:320:35:35

Hi, Andrew and Emma, hope you're having a fantastic time.

0:35:350:35:38

Hope you're having a wonderful time.

0:35:380:35:40

They're lovely. They're really lovely.

0:35:400:35:42

A very close family. Um, they...

0:35:420:35:44

they like going out and doing things together, they like being by the sea.

0:35:440:35:49

They're free spirits. They are adventurous.

0:35:490:35:53

They've done a lot of travelling.

0:35:530:35:55

Emma is very zesty. Um...

0:35:550:35:59

I'm pretty proud to have her as a daughter, actually,

0:35:590:36:02

because she's full of life.

0:36:020:36:03

That's my Grandma!

0:36:030:36:05

I'm incredibly proud of when, you know, she got her doctorate

0:36:050:36:10

and then went on to become a doctor of psychology.

0:36:100:36:15

Andrew's my younger brother.

0:36:150:36:17

Um, he's always been a bit of a wanderer.

0:36:170:36:20

He's always liked doing a lot of travelling.

0:36:200:36:23

But he's a great guy, he really is a great guy, and he adores his kids.

0:36:230:36:27

And he's always there if you need him.

0:36:270:36:30

Andrew and I lost our dad coming up for three years now

0:36:300:36:34

and we have become much closer since we lost Dad

0:36:340:36:38

and it's really nice having him close.

0:36:380:36:42

Even, you know, even though we may not get a chance to see him

0:36:420:36:45

as much as we'd like, having Andrew nearby is a comfort.

0:36:450:36:50

It is the little ones that I think...

0:36:500:36:53

-just tugs at your heartstrings a bit more.

-Yeah, it's...yeah, yeah.

0:36:530:36:58

Yeah, yeah.

0:36:580:37:00

Albert is gorgeous. Obviously, I'm a little bit biased.

0:37:000:37:04

He's the best grandson in the world. There's nobody like Albert.

0:37:040:37:09

Um, he's beautiful.

0:37:090:37:11

I love his eyes, I love his smile, I love the way his eyes light up

0:37:110:37:16

when I walk in the room. We love each other.

0:37:160:37:18

We have a real bond, we do, we really have.

0:37:180:37:21

Albert is absolutely gorgeous and he loves coming to our house

0:37:210:37:25

and he smiles and he's as good as gold and he loves the horses

0:37:250:37:29

and just a lovely, lovely little boy.

0:37:290:37:32

Yeah, there would be a gap, a huge gap.

0:37:320:37:34

'Also, the opportunity of not getting to know George.

0:37:340:37:37

'I think that's the big thing.'

0:37:370:37:39

I have a small circle of very close friends and

0:37:410:37:44

Emma and Andrew are sort of in that circle,

0:37:440:37:46

so it would leave a bit of a gap if they went.

0:37:460:37:50

It would feel quite empty, wouldn't it, really?

0:37:520:37:55

-Just knowing that they're not here.

-It would be hard, I think.

0:37:550:37:59

Yeah, well, if they enjoy their selves out there, then,

0:37:590:38:03

they can make their decision, but it's always nice to have them be

0:38:030:38:06

just an hour or so drive away. Oh!

0:38:060:38:08

We can't pretend we're happy about it.

0:38:080:38:10

But, we're not unhappy about it, you know,

0:38:120:38:14

it's just the fact we're going to miss you, miss the kids.

0:38:140:38:18

But, for all that, I hope it goes well for you and it's what you

0:38:180:38:21

really, really want and, if that's the case, then we're all for it.

0:38:210:38:25

-Your mum looked a bit devastated.

-Hmm, Mum will really miss the kids.

0:38:340:38:39

I think it's the grandparent connection that's the really,

0:38:390:38:42

really hard one and that's the one that came across strongest

0:38:420:38:45

on the film and I think that's the biggest concern for me.

0:38:450:38:50

I might wake up one morning

0:38:500:38:52

and kind of think that the boys are missing out on so much

0:38:520:38:56

because they're not near the grandparents, even though

0:38:560:38:59

they've got everything here - you know, nice climate,

0:38:590:39:02

beaches, lifestyle, that kind of thing.

0:39:020:39:04

That's not really something you can replace so much, is it?

0:39:040:39:07

I just don't know.

0:39:070:39:09

It's a massive responsibility saying what can be offered here is better...

0:39:090:39:13

or is worth halting those relationships in its tracks

0:39:150:39:18

and I don't know if I want that

0:39:180:39:20

responsibility to make that call, really.

0:39:200:39:22

You know, I don't know if we're just confusing it. I don't know.

0:39:220:39:25

No, I don't know, but we've got to do what's best...

0:39:250:39:29

-..for us and the kids.

-Yeah, but that's what I'm saying.

0:39:290:39:32

But that's part of the decision, isn't it?

0:39:320:39:35

You know, that's a big...to say that growing up in New Zealand is

0:39:350:39:39

more important or better for them

0:39:390:39:41

than having a relationship with their grandparents is not really

0:39:410:39:45

-a decision...they're not two options I want to decide between.

-No.

0:39:450:39:49

Yeah.

0:39:510:39:52

Hearing messages from those they love the most has been

0:40:020:40:05

a painful reminder of what Emma and Andrew will lose

0:40:050:40:09

if they decide to leave the UK

0:40:090:40:11

and it seems Emma is especially torn over what to do for her children.

0:40:110:40:16

Give them a new life in New Zealand or keep them close

0:40:160:40:19

to the grandparents who love them so dearly?

0:40:190:40:23

With their trial week coming to an end,

0:40:230:40:26

Emma and Andrew know they can't put their decision off for much longer.

0:40:260:40:29

I hoped New Zealand would be good.

0:40:290:40:32

It's been amazing and the country itself, I love to bits.

0:40:320:40:35

I really enjoyed getting a sense of what it'd be like to live here rather

0:40:350:40:38

than just to be on holiday here.

0:40:380:40:40

I think it's been an invaluable experience.

0:40:400:40:42

For the couple, the real pull of New Zealand was always

0:40:420:40:44

the lifestyle it could potentially offer.

0:40:440:40:47

So, has Kiwi living delivered on its promise?

0:40:470:40:50

'To see Albert in a wetsuit standing around by the surfboards

0:40:500:40:54

'and seeing the other kids surfing. That's a real...'

0:40:540:40:57

wow moment, so that's something that I loved

0:40:570:41:00

and I think he would grow up just enjoying that beach.

0:41:000:41:04

But, with so much at stake, will the lifestyle be enough to

0:41:050:41:08

convince Emma to move to the other side of the world?

0:41:080:41:12

'It would be very easy to sit here in this beautiful park

0:41:120:41:16

'surrounded by a really family friendly environment

0:41:160:41:18

'and be seduced by the idea of living in New Zealand,'

0:41:180:41:21

until I've got that flag in my hand, I don't know how I'm going to vote.

0:41:210:41:25

She has told me she's willing to sacrifice part of her

0:41:250:41:31

career aspirations, if you like, for the lifestyle of us

0:41:310:41:35

and our children, and I think that's a lovely thing to do,

0:41:350:41:38

but I'm not sure how I feel about that.

0:41:380:41:41

So, after 15 years of talking about it, when it comes to the

0:41:410:41:45

final turn of the cards, where do Andrew and Emma see their future?

0:41:450:41:49

New Zealand or the UK?

0:41:490:41:51

We've had a really interesting week and,

0:41:510:41:53

based on everything we've seen, we vote...

0:41:530:41:56

-New Zealand.

-Undecided.

0:42:080:42:09

-Undecided, eh?

-I think there were two sticking points for me.

0:42:110:42:14

There was the finances and there was friends and family.

0:42:140:42:17

If everyone was here and the finances were bad,

0:42:170:42:20

then I would have said New Zealand.

0:42:200:42:22

And if the finances were better and we got to visit our families

0:42:220:42:26

more often, then I would have said New Zealand.

0:42:260:42:28

I don't disagree and I think, especially as property is a lot more

0:42:280:42:31

expensive and the cost of living is

0:42:310:42:33

a lot more expensive than I thought, um,

0:42:330:42:35

there are still some questions that we need to answer,

0:42:350:42:38

but I still think it's a really serious option.

0:42:380:42:40

-I think we could make it work if we wanted to.

-What's your vote?

0:42:400:42:43

England!

0:42:460:42:48

THEY LAUGH

0:42:480:42:49

To the UK!

0:42:500:42:52

With such high ambitions,

0:42:520:42:53

it was always going to be difficult to make the finances work,

0:42:530:42:58

but, in the end, the thought of breaking the bond

0:42:580:43:01

between their children and their grandparents was too much for Emma.

0:43:010:43:06

It sounds like Andrew hasn't quite given up on his dream though.

0:43:060:43:10

Whatever happens next, we wish them all every happiness.
