Loved ones left behind in the UK, looking for new careers,

0:00:020:00:06

finding the perfect home

0:00:060:00:08

to start again...

0:00:080:00:09

all emotional dilemmas faced by thousands of Brits every year

0:00:090:00:14

in search of a better life abroad.

0:00:140:00:17

This is Wanted Down Under.

0:00:170:00:19

The Savage family had always dreamed of emigrating, but in 2009,

0:00:200:00:25

the sudden death of husband and father Paul

0:00:250:00:27

brought all that to an end.

0:00:270:00:29

We lost a big part of our lives, you know, and it changed us all.

0:00:290:00:35

Mum Helene feels guilty that her eldest daughter had to grow up

0:00:350:00:38

so quickly.

0:00:380:00:40

She is a good girl and I don't appreciate her sometimes

0:00:400:00:42

for everything that she does do.

0:00:420:00:45

Now, she's determined to put the tragic past behind them

0:00:450:00:48

with a new life down under.

0:00:480:00:50

What she wants to do is to rebuild our family and try

0:00:500:00:53

and make us all come closer together.

0:00:530:00:56

But, to achieve it, she's going to have to take them away

0:00:560:00:59

from the family who've supported them through the tragedy.

0:00:590:01:02

I don't really think words would be able to describe

0:01:020:01:05

how much I miss them.

0:01:050:01:06

Tiernan every day reminds me more of my daddy.

0:01:060:01:09

Almost a quarter of all UK residents living abroad

0:01:350:01:38

are based in Australia.

0:01:380:01:39

With its sunny climate and outdoor lifestyle,

0:01:390:01:42

it's a magnet for Brits seeking a new life,

0:01:420:01:45

but the grass isn't always greener and leaving everything you know

0:01:450:01:48

half a world away can be a lot harder than you think.

0:01:480:01:51

The Savage family are about to set out on a journey that could

0:01:530:01:57

change their lives for ever.

0:01:570:01:59

They'll be spending the week in Perth,

0:01:590:02:02

discovering everything Australia has to offer before deciding

0:02:020:02:06

once and for all whether to stay in the UK or to make the move for good.

0:02:060:02:10

After two days and 10,000 miles,

0:02:120:02:14

the Savages have finally arrived in Australia

0:02:140:02:17

for the first time and it's hit home just how far away it is.

0:02:170:02:22

We left Belfast at three o'clock on Sunday,

0:02:220:02:25

and it's now...

0:02:250:02:28

20 to two on Tuesday!

0:02:280:02:31

But, despite the long journey, they're excited about the week.

0:02:310:02:35

I'm looking forward to just everything that's ahead.

0:02:350:02:38

-It's just...I can't wait.

-I've never been to Australia before.

0:02:380:02:42

I just can't wait to see Perth, to see what it has to offer.

0:02:420:02:45

I have this image in my head that this is a wonderful place,

0:02:450:02:48

and what if it's not?

0:02:480:02:50

Ahead of them is a week of discovery away from everything they know

0:02:500:02:53

on the other side of the world.

0:02:530:02:55

Meet the Savages.

0:02:580:03:00

They are mum Helene, Nicole, who's 17,

0:03:000:03:03

Tiernan, who's 13,

0:03:030:03:05

and Erin aged 7.

0:03:050:03:06

They live in Toomebridge in Northern Ireland.

0:03:060:03:09

Emigrating has been Helene's dream for as long as she can remember.

0:03:100:03:14

I've always been attracted to Australia.

0:03:140:03:16

It's just a beautiful place and I've just always wanted to go.

0:03:160:03:20

That's my dream...

0:03:200:03:22

to be in Australia, nice house, and just enjoying life.

0:03:220:03:27

But her dreams were dashed when her husband, Paul,

0:03:270:03:29

suddenly passed away four years ago.

0:03:290:03:33

We...

0:03:330:03:35

lost a big part of our lives, you know, and it changed us all.

0:03:350:03:40

'I didn't have the support there any more...

0:03:400:03:43

'of their father.'

0:03:430:03:44

With no father figure around,

0:03:440:03:46

Helene looked to daughter Nicole for support.

0:03:460:03:49

She was just 13 when Paul died,

0:03:490:03:51

and soon found herself helping to bring up Tiernan and Erin.

0:03:510:03:55

I knew that I was going to need to start helping, so...

0:03:550:03:58

that's what I done.

0:03:580:03:59

'And I would, like, get them their dinner and help them with

0:03:590:04:02

'their homework and I would bath them and put them to bed.

0:04:020:04:05

'You just have to basically do what Mum usually does.'

0:04:050:04:09

Helene feels Nicole missed out on part of growing up.

0:04:090:04:13

She is a good girl and I don't appreciate her sometimes

0:04:130:04:15

for everything that she does do.

0:04:150:04:17

She never got to do the things that other girls were doing,

0:04:170:04:21

which I feel guilty for, sometimes, now.

0:04:210:04:24

Most of my friends, like, would rely on their mummy and daddy to

0:04:240:04:28

do things for them, but my mummy relies on me to do things for her.

0:04:280:04:33

Mother and daughter now have an unbreakable bond.

0:04:330:04:37

It's made us who we are today...

0:04:370:04:39

and...

0:04:390:04:41

..we're stronger people for it,

0:04:410:04:43

I believe.

0:04:430:04:45

And we're much closer.

0:04:450:04:47

I don't think we could have managed without her stepping up...

0:04:470:04:51

to, you know, the role that she has.

0:04:510:04:54

After everything they've been through,

0:04:560:04:58

Helene believes Australia can help her family get over their loss.

0:04:580:05:03

'I do feel we've been through a lot and, you know,

0:05:030:05:05

'just the change. A change in'

0:05:050:05:07

the environment and the atmosphere just might, you know,

0:05:070:05:11

bring us all out of ourselves a wee bit more.

0:05:110:05:14

And a better life for Tiernan and Erin is at the heart of her plans.

0:05:160:05:20

I think, just things that I want for the children,

0:05:200:05:24

the better lifestyle for them.

0:05:240:05:26

I feel really excited because the beach is really, like, big

0:05:260:05:31

and I would like to throw all the sand at Tiernan.

0:05:310:05:35

SHE LAUGHS

0:05:350:05:36

In Australia, I'd love to see a koala

0:05:360:05:39

-and a kangaroo that boxes people.

-Boing, boing, boing!

0:05:390:05:43

Erin's a bit young and she'll just go with the flow.

0:05:430:05:47

-Tiernan knows what he wants.

-'It'd be good to make new friends'

0:05:470:05:50

and go to a whole new school.

0:05:500:05:52

But if she's to give her family the life she dreams of,

0:05:530:05:56

Helene is only too aware of the sacrifices they'll have to make.

0:05:560:06:00

My mum doesn't want us to go.

0:06:010:06:03

She has all these fears and, you know, what-ifs.

0:06:030:06:07

Paul's mum, Catherine, is going to be the one who'll feel it the most,

0:06:070:06:10

with losing Paul

0:06:100:06:13

and then...

0:06:130:06:15

the two grandchildren being the only thing that she has left from him.

0:06:150:06:18

And taking them away from her, I think, will just break her heart.

0:06:200:06:24

The children will also be saying goodbye to their half-sister Cleona,

0:06:270:06:31

and, for Nicole, that's too much to bear.

0:06:310:06:34

It's just leaving them...

0:06:340:06:36

Nanny and Grandad, mostly.

0:06:360:06:37

-I'm...

-SHE CRIES

0:06:390:06:41

You're all right.

0:06:410:06:42

Just being the first grandchild, they've always been there.

0:06:450:06:49

You know, you won't have that when you go...

0:06:490:06:52

to the other side of the world.

0:06:520:06:53

Helene is torn between her plans to improve their lives

0:06:550:06:58

and Nicole's reaction.

0:06:580:07:00

My fear is that when we go out there...

0:07:000:07:02

..you know, it is just me and her with the two wee ones. You know...

0:07:040:07:09

If she's having a bad day there's no family member she can turn to.

0:07:090:07:13

Am I doing the right thing, taking her away from that?

0:07:130:07:16

And if she can't bring Nicole around,

0:07:160:07:18

the dream of a better life could be over.

0:07:180:07:21

'I don't want Nicole going and being unhappy.

0:07:220:07:28

'If it's going to work, it has to work for us all.'

0:07:280:07:30

You know, if we come back, we all come back. If we stay, we all stay.

0:07:300:07:34

Despite the support 17-year-old Nicole has been able to offer,

0:07:340:07:38

Helene feels she has to be the mother in this decision.

0:07:380:07:41

I'm a single parent going with three children.

0:07:430:07:45

I have to get it right in my head and know that it's right for all of us...

0:07:450:07:49

before I jump.

0:07:490:07:51

Helene's convinced Australia could give her family a brighter future,

0:07:510:07:55

but, if it's ever to happen,

0:07:550:07:57

she'll have to put her own concerns to rest and get Nicole on board,

0:07:570:08:02

and, with just one week to convince her, the pressure really is on.

0:08:020:08:06

For their week down under,

0:08:110:08:12

the Savages are staying in Joondalup just 26 miles north of Perth.

0:08:120:08:17

The area is named after Lake Joondalup,

0:08:170:08:19

an Aboriginal word meaning, "Place of great whiteness or glistening."

0:08:190:08:23

Home for the week is this four-bedroom town house.

0:08:230:08:26

It's the family's first taste of Aussie style living.

0:08:260:08:30

Cool! Fabulous!

0:08:300:08:32

-Cool!

-Oh, I love the TV.

0:08:320:08:33

The picture is weird.

0:08:350:08:37

It doesn't go with the room.

0:08:370:08:39

-Walk-in wardrobe.

-That's my bedroom!

0:08:400:08:43

If it's a master bedroom, then I shall be having it.

0:08:430:08:45

-We'll see what the other rooms are like.

-We'll do heads or tails.

0:08:450:08:48

Good try, Nicole!

0:08:480:08:49

Pool table! Cool! I'm so excited now.

0:08:490:08:53

I love the kitchen.

0:08:530:08:55

It's a wee bit dated to me, but, sure, I mean, it's...

0:08:550:08:58

-it's not bad.

-And as for outdoor space...

0:08:580:09:01

It's warm in this bit, isn't it?

0:09:030:09:05

Is this it?

0:09:080:09:09

OK, not perfect, but Helene's staying positive.

0:09:110:09:14

Well, it doesn't feel real to be here. It's strange.

0:09:170:09:19

I have to keep pinching myself.

0:09:190:09:21

It never really dawned on me until I was travelling...

0:09:210:09:24

the length of time of the flight.

0:09:240:09:26

It still doesn't put me off.

0:09:260:09:28

You know, I have to think about us...

0:09:290:09:32

..in the long-term.

0:09:320:09:34

But Nicole's already thinking of who she's left behind.

0:09:340:09:37

I couldn't picture any of my grannies doing this, or my grandad

0:09:370:09:39

or anybody doing this, because it's just...it's too much.

0:09:390:09:43

It really, really isn't that easy.

0:09:430:09:45

I do think it's fear with Nicole.

0:09:450:09:47

I think Nicole is afraid because it is just me and her that...

0:09:480:09:54

..you know, God forbid something happened to me,

0:09:550:09:58

then she's left in the country...

0:09:580:10:00

with nobody to help her.

0:10:000:10:03

If my mum wanted to come here and I didn't, then...

0:10:030:10:07

it would be hard for both of us, but...

0:10:070:10:11

I wouldn't want to leave my mummy.

0:10:110:10:13

This'll be the decider, whether we stay or we go.

0:10:130:10:17

Um, and, either way, it'll be out of our system.

0:10:170:10:21

Back in the UK, the Savages live in this

0:10:260:10:28

four-bedroom bungalow in County Antrim.

0:10:280:10:31

I'm in this house ten years come this December.

0:10:320:10:35

I've put a lot of money into it, um, you know...

0:10:350:10:39

refurbished all the rooms.

0:10:390:10:41

Um...I like my house here and it's a lovely area, you know,

0:10:410:10:45

it's great for young families.

0:10:450:10:47

We all have our own bedrooms.

0:10:470:10:49

Um, you know, four-bedroom house, kids all have their own rooms.

0:10:490:10:53

I would like the same in Australia. Maybe an extra for visitors to come.

0:10:540:10:59

I would love...

0:10:590:11:01

a lovely open-plan kitchen-living area. A pool!

0:11:010:11:06

And to be beside the coast, I want the beach and the pool.

0:11:070:11:11

Yeah! Maybe a nice, wee, small lounge,

0:11:110:11:14

um, with the TV and stuff in it that's separate from

0:11:140:11:17

the big living area... barbecue area...

0:11:170:11:21

Um, I'm being greedy. I want the whole lot.

0:11:210:11:24

If the family do make the move, Helene plans to rent initially,

0:11:260:11:30

so, to show them what's available on the Perth rental market,

0:11:300:11:33

we've chosen three different properties based on what

0:11:330:11:36

they want and what they can afford.

0:11:360:11:38

Only after seeing each house will they discover how much it costs.

0:11:380:11:42

The search begins in the suburb of Alkimos, 26 miles north of Perth.

0:11:420:11:47

This area is still under construction,

0:11:470:11:49

but, once completed, will have all the facilities young families need.

0:11:490:11:53

It's also close to the beach, which should please Helene.

0:11:530:11:56

The Savages are viewing this four-bedroom former show home.

0:11:580:12:01

Will it meet their expectations?

0:12:010:12:03

Oh, wow. Look.

0:12:040:12:06

-Oh, this is lovely.

-It is nice.

0:12:060:12:09

-One bathroom.

-There's a shower.

0:12:090:12:12

-That's amazing.

-That's just what I want, the big shower area!

0:12:120:12:16

Very modern living, just what I would like.

0:12:160:12:19

Let's go and see another room.

0:12:200:12:22

Oh, wow!

0:12:240:12:26

-(Wow.)

-Oh, cool.

0:12:260:12:27

This is it.

0:12:270:12:29

It's all cosy and just the family space for to chill out

0:12:290:12:33

-and have family time.

-I just love the colours, it's lovely.

0:12:330:12:36

I'm just speechless. I don't know what to say. It's beautiful.

0:12:360:12:39

So far, so good.

0:12:390:12:41

-Yeah, this is definitely my typical room.

-Oh, is it?

-Yeah.

0:12:420:12:46

-Now, this is my type of room.

-THEY LAUGH

0:12:490:12:52

This is what I want, big time. I really have...

0:12:530:12:56

This is what I've looked for

0:12:560:12:58

-in an Australian home.

-Would this make you come here, then?

0:12:580:13:01

-Yeah.

-Yeah?

-Mm-hm.

0:13:010:13:02

Cos you were a bit iffy.

0:13:020:13:04

Well, I still am, but...

0:13:040:13:06

-Now, you're coming round a bit.

-A bit, yeah.

0:13:060:13:09

Not a bad start.

0:13:090:13:10

The modern design of this house is certainly getting

0:13:100:13:13

the thumbs up from Nicole.

0:13:130:13:14

-Wow!

-Wow!

-Oh, wow!

0:13:160:13:17

-This is lovely.

-Oh, my God, when can we move in?!

0:13:180:13:23

-I know, it's just perfect.

-This is beautiful.

0:13:230:13:26

There's just so much to take in.

0:13:280:13:30

You could picture yourself standing over here and cooking breakfast.

0:13:300:13:35

You cooking and me sitting up here, having a chat

0:13:350:13:38

and the kids just playing and...

0:13:380:13:40

It's just so family friendly, like, everything's just...perfect

0:13:400:13:44

and I just...

0:13:440:13:45

I just want to live here right now!

0:13:450:13:48

That's music to Helene's ears, but, there's something missing.

0:13:480:13:53

This ticks all the boxes for me.

0:13:530:13:55

-Except for one.

-Except for one -

0:13:560:13:58

I can't see no swimming pool!

0:13:580:14:00

And Helene's not the only one disappointed.

0:14:010:14:04

This is lovely.

0:14:040:14:06

I'm not happy because there's no pool.

0:14:060:14:10

HELENE CHUCKLES

0:14:100:14:11

So, we want a nice house like this and a swimming pool?

0:14:110:14:14

Yeah.

0:14:160:14:17

And a barbecue.

0:14:170:14:19

-We're not asking much, are we?

-No.

-No.

0:14:190:14:22

This house has everything but a pool,

0:14:220:14:25

but could the family afford it on their £1,200 a month rental budget?

0:14:250:14:30

Let's find out how much this house is.

0:14:300:14:32

Oh!

0:14:340:14:35

£1,220 a month!

0:14:350:14:40

It's a new-build, I suppose, you're paying for what you get.

0:14:410:14:44

As much as we could afford it, probably just...

0:14:440:14:48

we said four bedrooms, maybe five, and a pool.

0:14:480:14:52

But, if that's four bedrooms without a pool....

0:14:530:14:57

you know, I think, maybe, we would need to...

0:14:570:15:00

..reconsider what we're looking.

0:15:020:15:04

Not quite the start Helene was hoping for.

0:15:040:15:08

Property number two is in the well-established suburb of Butler,

0:15:080:15:11

25 miles north of Perth.

0:15:110:15:14

It's a family friendly area with plenty of facilities

0:15:140:15:17

right on the doorstep, offering the community feel Helene's looking for.

0:15:170:15:21

OK.

0:15:230:15:24

THEY GASP

0:15:240:15:25

-Oh, wow!

-This is lovely.

0:15:250:15:27

-Hmm.

-This is gorgeous.

0:15:290:15:31

I think it's lovely, so it is, the paintings and all.

0:15:310:15:36

-Could you picture yourself living here?

-I could.

0:15:360:15:39

Tiernan's sold.

0:15:390:15:40

You know, I was sitting there watching TV or you playing

0:15:400:15:43

out in the garden...

0:15:430:15:45

..standing cooking...

0:15:450:15:46

I just like...I just love the open-plan idea,

0:15:460:15:49

I can keep an eye on yous when yous are running about.

0:15:490:15:53

But Nicole's just not feeling it.

0:15:530:15:56

I know it's very open-plan and all, but...

0:15:560:15:58

..I don't know, it's just not me.

0:16:000:16:02

-Do you not like it?

-It just doesn't feel homely.

0:16:020:16:05

Perhaps the bedrooms can improve things.

0:16:050:16:08

-Oh, this is lovely.

-Look at this, Mummy.

0:16:080:16:10

Look, a walk-in wardrobe.

0:16:100:16:13

What do you think of that, Erin?

0:16:130:16:14

This is not my room!

0:16:140:16:16

Looks like Erin's hard to please, too!

0:16:160:16:19

-Hey, Erin's room.

-This is my room.

0:16:200:16:23

Yay, it's about time she said that.

0:16:230:16:25

This is my room, definitely.

0:16:250:16:28

But, once again, Helene's spotted a problem.

0:16:280:16:31

-There's only three.

-There's only three bedrooms.

0:16:320:16:35

Oh! Ah!

0:16:350:16:36

-Hmm.

-A master and two kids'.

0:16:360:16:39

It's a lovely house, like, it's really...just really

0:16:390:16:41

family friendly and all, but there's not enough bedrooms.

0:16:410:16:44

There is too much of an age gap between each of yous to share a room.

0:16:440:16:47

-I know.

-I'm a bit disappointed, actually...

0:16:470:16:51

because it's a very nice property.

0:16:510:16:54

Though it's only got three bedrooms, the area's perfect for the Savages.

0:16:540:16:58

Could the price win them round?

0:16:580:17:00

It's a beautiful house.

0:17:020:17:03

I like it. I love the space, the light...

0:17:040:17:07

..you know, it's well-presented.

0:17:090:17:10

The downside is, it's only three bedrooms.

0:17:120:17:14

Erin, do you want to turn the card over and let us know if we can...

0:17:140:17:17

-afford this house?

-OK.

0:17:170:17:19

Oh, dear.

0:17:210:17:23

That's almost £200 over budget.

0:17:230:17:26

I'm not impressed with that price for a three-bedroom house.

0:17:260:17:29

-No way.

-That's far too much.

-Well, I think it would be that

0:17:290:17:32

price because of the location, it's right beside the park and...

0:17:320:17:36

you know, just the design of it and all.

0:17:360:17:39

I agree with you, you're paying for being close to local amenities

0:17:390:17:42

and, um, you know, I suppose that's what you're going to get,

0:17:420:17:46

the further out you go, the cheaper it'll become.

0:17:460:17:48

I wouldn't pay that for this, I genuinely wouldn't.

0:17:480:17:51

-It's hard. We want it all...

-Yeah.

-..but we want it for nothing.

0:17:530:17:56

With two properties down,

0:17:570:17:59

there's just one chance left to find the perfect home.

0:17:590:18:03

The final house is also in the Butler area,

0:18:030:18:06

with four bedrooms, it could deliver the full package.

0:18:060:18:09

-It's lovely. It's a big space, it's...

-I love these chairs.

0:18:110:18:15

It's bright.

0:18:150:18:16

Nice.

0:18:180:18:19

-Another walk-in wardrobe.

-Ah!

0:18:200:18:23

-This is lovely.

-A walk-in wardrobe.

0:18:230:18:25

Another lovely kitchen.

0:18:270:18:29

-I like it.

-It's gorgeous.

0:18:310:18:33

I still love that fact that you can stand here and look out.

0:18:330:18:37

And Nicole's changed her mind about Aussie style living.

0:18:370:18:41

I know I said I didn't like anything that was all just the one...

0:18:410:18:44

-Open-plan.

-..open-plan, but I do like this.

0:18:440:18:47

Yeah! Let's move in.

0:18:470:18:49

-Right now.

-Yeah.

0:18:490:18:52

But it feels a bit like home from home to me,

0:18:520:18:54

it's just what I pictured.

0:18:540:18:56

-This is my room! Look at the baby goldfish!

-So cute!

0:18:570:19:02

-This is nice.

-This is definitely my room.

0:19:020:19:05

-It's lovely. This is a pretty house. I really like this house.

-So do I.

0:19:050:19:09

-Cool lamp.

-Mm-hm.

-Cool lamp.

0:19:090:19:11

-It just feels like home.

-Yeah, I could live here.

-Same.

0:19:110:19:15

This house seems to be the perfect fit

0:19:150:19:18

and there's another reason it could make a splash.

0:19:180:19:20

What about the view out that window, Erin?

0:19:200:19:22

ERIN GASPS

0:19:220:19:24

Would that view be OK for you?

0:19:240:19:25

-Yeah, definitely.

-Are you sure?

0:19:250:19:28

At last, this property seems to have everything the family have

0:19:280:19:32

been looking for.

0:19:320:19:33

This is what it was all about coming here - four bedrooms, a pool...

0:19:330:19:38

I want to go in right now.

0:19:380:19:40

It even seems to be working some magic on Nicole.

0:19:400:19:44

I know I was against it, but now that I've seen this house,

0:19:440:19:47

I just want to move right now.

0:19:470:19:48

The whole family can imagine this house as their home,

0:19:500:19:53

but will it be within their £1,200 a month budget?

0:19:530:19:56

I think this is the closest that we're going to get to

0:19:560:19:59

a property that we wanted.

0:19:590:20:01

-Are we ready? ALL:

-Yes!

0:20:010:20:03

A house that ticks all the boxes for me anyway.

0:20:030:20:07

-And me.

-One, two, three.

0:20:070:20:10

Oh!

0:20:100:20:12

That's £350 over budget.

0:20:120:20:15

SHE LAUGHS Speechless!

0:20:150:20:17

It's worth it, though. It's a bit over budget.

0:20:170:20:20

For me, it's not what I had in mind, but I would consider it.

0:20:210:20:26

Can we afford it?

0:20:260:20:28

As it...

0:20:310:20:32

At the minute, looking at it, I don't know.

0:20:320:20:36

That's my honest answer.

0:20:360:20:37

I would like to think we could, because this is what I would like.

0:20:370:20:40

That's a bit of a setback,

0:20:410:20:43

but Helene's not giving up on the dream home just yet.

0:20:430:20:47

The first house was achievable, but no pool meant no deal.

0:20:470:20:51

Property number two was a hit for Helene,

0:20:530:20:55

but the missing fourth bedroom let it down.

0:20:550:20:58

The final house was everything the Savages dreamed of,

0:20:580:21:01

but the price tag could put it beyond their reach.

0:21:010:21:04

So, when it comes to properties, will the family choose home or away?

0:21:040:21:08

Based on our experience of looking at properties in Australia,

0:21:080:21:12

we are voting for...

0:21:120:21:14

Australia.

0:21:210:21:23

Unsure. What did you pick?

0:21:230:21:25

UK. What did you pick?

0:21:250:21:26

Australia and Erin picked Australia.

0:21:260:21:29

I picked...

0:21:290:21:31

not sure, because the properties that we've looked at are all beautiful,

0:21:310:21:34

I like them all, but I'm a bit unsure whether I really want...

0:21:340:21:40

the expense.

0:21:400:21:41

After years of dreaming of a better life for her family in Australia,

0:21:460:21:50

today's house hunting has been a disappointment for Helene.

0:21:500:21:53

Perth's property prices have been a wake-up call and if she's going

0:21:530:21:57

to secure her ideal home, everything rests on her work opportunities.

0:21:570:22:01

Back in the UK, Helene works as a nurse, caring for the elderly.

0:22:020:22:06

It's a job she loves.

0:22:060:22:08

I have been working here in this care setting for the past two years.

0:22:080:22:13

I love the residents and I have great friends here

0:22:140:22:17

and the staff are lovely.

0:22:170:22:19

If I choose to move to Australia,

0:22:190:22:21

I would want a job similar to what I'm doing.

0:22:210:22:24

We've arranged for Helene to spend time at a local care home in Perth.

0:22:250:22:29

-Welcome to Bethanie Beachside.

-Hello.

-Lovely to meet you.

0:22:290:22:32

-Thank you.

-My name's Michelle.

-I'm Helene.

0:22:320:22:34

I'm one of the regional managers for Bethanie.

0:22:340:22:37

-I'm going to show you around.

-OK.

-Have a look.

0:22:370:22:39

This is an area where the families, when they visit,

0:22:390:22:41

they can have a look and see what's been happening this week.

0:22:410:22:44

We've got Australia Day, which is a significant day for us,

0:22:440:22:47

you know, we really love our Australia Day barbecue.

0:22:470:22:49

Our residents and volunteers.

0:22:490:22:51

Then, over here, we've got our children coming in from

0:22:510:22:54

the local schools, doing a nativity programme.

0:22:540:22:56

-A hairdresser.

-OK.

0:22:560:22:59

Uh, doctor's visiting room.

0:22:590:23:01

4 and 7 - 47.

0:23:030:23:05

They're residents calling out the numbers, not staff.

0:23:050:23:08

OK. He's a sprightly resident!

0:23:080:23:11

Well, you have to make the most of the years that you can still

0:23:110:23:13

-do things. Our newsletter is done by our residents.

-Oh, very good.

0:23:130:23:17

-That's great.

-Cos it's their news.

0:23:170:23:19

It's an amazing facility, you know, that it offers so much.

0:23:190:23:22

And happy staff is really important too. Happy staff...

0:23:220:23:25

-happy residents.

-Happy residents. Yeah.

0:23:250:23:28

-APPLAUSE

-OK.

0:23:280:23:31

Across town, Nicole's checking out her options.

0:23:310:23:35

In the UK, she's studying to be a hairdresser

0:23:350:23:37

and she's keen to find out

0:23:370:23:39

if she could continue her training should she move to Australia.

0:23:390:23:42

I would really love to be a hairdresser

0:23:420:23:43

if we moved out here because it would just make me

0:23:430:23:46

feel more used to people and get more used to the feeling

0:23:460:23:49

and the lifestyle of Australia.

0:23:490:23:51

While Tiernan and Erin are looked after by a child minder,

0:23:510:23:54

Nicole visits a local college where lecturer Dawn shows

0:23:540:23:57

her around the hairdressing facility.

0:23:570:23:59

So, it's a simulated working salon, so we actually take bookings

0:23:590:24:03

for clients through for cutting, colouring, perming.

0:24:030:24:06

This is our hairdresser department.

0:24:080:24:10

The students are actually working towards a Cert III in hairdressing.

0:24:100:24:13

We do 680 hours here for the total course for a Cert III in

0:24:130:24:17

hairdressing and in the UK, probably similar, about 560 hours in total.

0:24:170:24:22

The units are very, very similar.

0:24:220:24:24

I was expecting it to be a wee bit different, but, thank God it's not,

0:24:240:24:27

-it's just the same as back home.

-No, exactly the same. Cut hair,

0:24:270:24:30

colour hair, perm hair, all over the world, exactly the same.

0:24:300:24:33

That's just what Nicole wanted to hear.

0:24:330:24:35

So, Polly, what are you actually doing today with Sheryl?

0:24:350:24:38

I'm basically refreshing the haircut that Sheryl has

0:24:380:24:40

put in through before, which is layers and I'm putting a nice solid

0:24:400:24:44

edge to it as well, just to make sure that her hair looks nice and thick.

0:24:440:24:47

Student Polly used to study hairdressing in Ireland.

0:24:470:24:50

I have to say, I enjoy the school in Australia better than

0:24:500:24:53

I did the one in Ireland.

0:24:530:24:54

So, yeah, I just think the people are actually a little bit more attentive.

0:24:540:24:58

-Yeah.

-You kind of get a little bit more

0:24:580:25:01

one-on-one with your, you know, teachers.

0:25:010:25:04

And meeting her is a chance for Nicole to get some answers

0:25:040:25:07

about her potential future.

0:25:070:25:09

Did you find it a lot more difficult when you moved here from Ireland?

0:25:090:25:13

It wasn't actually too bad,

0:25:130:25:15

I mean, the immigration process was fairly straightforward.

0:25:150:25:18

I started my course and became a student,

0:25:180:25:20

which basically gives me the right to work 20 hours every week.

0:25:200:25:24

Would you recommend the course to me?

0:25:240:25:26

It's definitely more hands-on, which is great,

0:25:260:25:28

so you definitely can feel that you actually are gaining

0:25:280:25:31

the knowledge and you become more and more confident.

0:25:310:25:33

The staff in campus are lovely and the students are really nice as well.

0:25:330:25:37

It's definitely challenging at times, it can be quite busy,

0:25:370:25:40

but I think that's a positive more than a negative.

0:25:400:25:42

Hearing how easy the transition can be is reassuring for Nicole,

0:25:420:25:47

but back at the care home, Helene's got some questions of her own.

0:25:470:25:51

Going round this facility today, it's great, you know.

0:25:510:25:54

Would there be, you know, job opportunities here for me?

0:25:540:25:57

Most definitely, I mean,

0:25:570:25:59

the Bethanie Group really welcomes UK and American nurses.

0:25:590:26:04

You have to apply through the Nursing Registration.

0:26:040:26:07

In this facility, I've probably sponsored about four nurses,

0:26:070:26:10

three from the UK.

0:26:100:26:11

But I can actually put you in touch with an HR advisor...

0:26:110:26:14

-OK.

-..who can actually help you.

0:26:140:26:16

As a full-time clinical nurse,

0:26:160:26:17

what type of salary could I expect here in Australia?

0:26:170:26:20

Between 75,000 and 80,000,

0:26:200:26:22

-which would be about £56,000 sterling today.

-No way!

0:26:220:26:25

I don't know what it would be tomorrow cos of the changing pound.

0:26:250:26:28

SHE GASPS Oh, wow.

0:26:280:26:30

-That is a big increase in salary, definitely.

-I guess it's full-time.

0:26:300:26:34

You know, in our industry, you know,

0:26:340:26:36

full-time can be between 8 and 5 or 7 and 3.

0:26:360:26:39

-OK.

-Yeah.

-That's great news and that, you know...

-Yes.

0:26:390:26:44

..is a lot to take in and a lot to think about.

0:26:440:26:48

As a single mum, Helene's ability to earn enough to provide for

0:26:480:26:52

-her family has always been a major concern.

-I'm surprised.

0:26:520:26:56

I work part-time as a nurse in the UK and, if I was full-time,

0:26:560:26:59

I could earn between £19,000 and £21,000.

0:26:590:27:03

Um, as a full-time nurse working here, I could earn, um,

0:27:030:27:07

within the region of £55,000 sterling.

0:27:070:27:10

That's life-changing in job terms, you know.

0:27:100:27:12

It's given me a lot to think about. Um...

0:27:120:27:15

Can I do this by myself? And, you know, now I'm thinking I can.

0:27:150:27:20

It's a big step in the right direction

0:27:200:27:22

and could bring Helene's dream home within reach.

0:27:220:27:25

Will the news be as good for Nicole?

0:27:260:27:29

If I came here, would I have to start from the very, very beginning?

0:27:290:27:33

If you've got what we call comparison units,

0:27:330:27:36

we can transfer them over, but to be able to do that,

0:27:360:27:40

you would actually, um, have to join the course.

0:27:400:27:43

We would evaluate your skills.

0:27:430:27:45

What would the salary be for me as, what I would say, a trainee?

0:27:450:27:50

For the first year, you would expect in excess of 300 per week

0:27:500:27:53

and that can range right the way through to when you finish

0:27:530:27:56

as the senior stylist, and it can be anything from 700 up

0:27:560:27:59

to about 800, depending on the salon.

0:27:590:28:02

I'm only earning £50 a week.

0:28:020:28:06

So, here, it's a lot more.

0:28:060:28:10

'Both Nicole and Helene would substantially increase

0:28:100:28:12

'their earning power, if they made the move down under.'

0:28:120:28:16

Based on our work experience today in Australia, we are voting for...

0:28:160:28:19

BOTH: Australia!

0:28:240:28:26

The money Helene and Nicole could earn in Australia has

0:28:310:28:34

shown them both a potential upside to life down under,

0:28:340:28:38

but while Nicole appears to be coming round to the idea of

0:28:380:28:41

the move, Helene knows she still has her work cut out to convince her.

0:28:410:28:45

Part of Helene's dream is to spend more time together

0:28:480:28:51

away from the British weather, so, today, the Savages

0:28:510:28:54

are checking out the facilities on offer in the local Perth area.

0:28:540:28:57

It's a far cry from the dark, dank skies of home.

0:28:590:29:02

Standing here in Australia in this beautiful sunshine,

0:29:030:29:07

no expense, a beach, a towel, a few bottles of water,

0:29:070:29:11

some sandwiches, I mean, what more could you ask for?

0:29:110:29:15

It's a wishing well, Erin.

0:29:160:29:18

Back home, it's opening your blinds and all you see is grey skies

0:29:180:29:21

and you're like, "Should we go here? Should we go there?"

0:29:210:29:24

When you can't go anywhere, cos you depend on the weather.

0:29:240:29:26

And Nicole's noticed a change for the better in Mum.

0:29:260:29:30

'She seems more happy and just more herself than

0:29:300:29:33

'back home.'

0:29:330:29:35

The kids are all in the house playing,

0:29:350:29:36

I'm trying to do things round them. I'm getting stressed out.

0:29:360:29:39

So, when we're over here and we're all out,

0:29:390:29:41

I am less stressed over silly things.

0:29:410:29:44

BOTH: Loser buys ice cream.

0:29:460:29:47

Helene's delighted to see Nicole let her hair down.

0:29:480:29:51

Nicole is a mature 17-year-old, she's had to grow up pretty quickly,

0:29:530:29:56

but, you know, to come out and have days like this,

0:29:560:29:59

it's nice to let her...get that childish side out of herself.

0:29:590:30:04

The sunshine's even had an effect on Tiernan and Erin's relationship.

0:30:060:30:10

Cos there's that bit of an age difference, the two of them

0:30:100:30:13

don't really get on, but when they're out

0:30:130:30:15

and about like today, I have seen the two of them

0:30:150:30:17

have got on so well and I'm just really pleased to see that.

0:30:170:30:20

-Have yous all had a fun day? ALL:

-Uh-huh.

0:30:240:30:26

This is the way I want it to be, you know,

0:30:270:30:29

I bring up three children, I want them to grow up happy.

0:30:290:30:32

'They've been great today and I hope this is the beginning of new things.'

0:30:320:30:37

Based on our lifestyle experiences today, we are voting for...

0:30:370:30:41

ALL: Australia!

0:30:490:30:50

Yay! I think that was pretty obvious today, was it?

0:30:510:30:54

-ALL:

-Yeah.

0:30:540:30:56

-And we want fun days like this a lot of the time, don't we?

-Yeah!

0:30:560:31:00

Life in Australia is beginning to look very promising

0:31:050:31:08

for the Savages, but now they have to establish if they can afford it.

0:31:080:31:12

Helene plans to sell the family home in the UK to help fund

0:31:120:31:16

a move down under.

0:31:160:31:17

She thinks it's worth around £130,000,

0:31:180:31:21

so we sent round two estate agents to give an up-to-date valuation.

0:31:210:31:25

THEY LAUGH

0:31:310:31:32

This is a typical semidetached property.

0:31:340:31:38

It has been up probably about 20 years

0:31:380:31:41

and maybe needs a little bit of a...

0:31:410:31:43

-modernisation.

-What?!

0:31:430:31:45

This is a nice, inviting front room with an open fire,

0:31:470:31:52

plenty of room for furniture in here and a nice bay window.

0:31:520:31:55

This is a really modern kitchen with a range of appliances.

0:31:590:32:03

The only negative is it's quite small for dining.

0:32:030:32:06

What?!

0:32:060:32:08

Ah, nicely enclosed garden here, with a large decking area,

0:32:090:32:13

south facing aspect.

0:32:130:32:15

Very nice.

0:32:150:32:16

This a very nice children's bedroom, it's a nice feature wall,

0:32:200:32:23

and we also have fitted wardrobes here.

0:32:230:32:26

Miss your wee room?

0:32:260:32:27

Yeah, typical bathroom for this type of property.

0:32:310:32:33

White suite, which is always very popular, doesn't date.

0:32:330:32:36

This is a really good size bedroom.

0:32:360:32:39

Um, I like the range of fitted units here.

0:32:390:32:42

The one thing I will say, because it's downstairs, it could actually

0:32:420:32:45

be used as a separate dining room because the kitchen is quite small.

0:32:450:32:49

No!

0:32:490:32:50

That's my room!

0:32:500:32:53

-TIERNAN GASPS

-'Oh!'

0:32:530:32:55

'Oh, God!'

0:32:570:32:59

Yes, here we have upstairs now, a good...

0:32:590:33:02

double room.

0:33:020:33:04

This is a spacious master bedroom, um, I like the, uh,

0:33:040:33:07

VELUX window letting in plenty of daylight.

0:33:070:33:10

I also like the fact that they've made the most of the space

0:33:100:33:13

again, with these built-in units.

0:33:130:33:15

Oh, look at all our photographs.

0:33:210:33:23

Given the current market conditions here in Northern Ireland,

0:33:230:33:26

-I would value this property in the region of £100,000.

-What?!

0:33:260:33:30

Um, if they required a quick sale,

0:33:300:33:32

I'd be expecting offers around £90,000 for this property.

0:33:320:33:36

-No way, no.

-No way, mister.

0:33:360:33:38

In the current market conditions,

0:33:380:33:40

I would value this property at £115,000.

0:33:400:33:43

For a quick sale, um,

0:33:430:33:45

they would need to be marketing at around 95,000.

0:33:450:33:48

I'm not happy. I'm actually quite shocked at that.

0:33:500:33:53

How much did you think the house would be worth?

0:33:530:33:57

I was expecting at least 130.

0:33:570:33:58

Does that mean that we can't move here, then?

0:33:590:34:02

I don't know, son. Um, I think it'd be something that...

0:34:020:34:05

..I'll really have to think about.

0:34:070:34:09

A valuation much lower than expected has thrown any move into real doubt.

0:34:100:34:15

Is there any way they can make the figures stack up?

0:34:150:34:18

To help them work it out, we've provided a comparison of their

0:34:180:34:21

finances in the UK and Australia, starting with the weekly food shop.

0:34:210:34:26

Looking at this - ham...

0:34:280:34:30

-now, you know the amount of ham that we go through in our house.

-Yeah.

0:34:300:34:34

-£5 in the UK.

-Yes.

-That would be two big packets of ham that we would use.

0:34:340:34:38

£8.16...

0:34:390:34:41

-here.

-What about your bread?

0:34:410:34:43

£1.71...

0:34:450:34:48

of a difference. Dearer over here for a loaf.

0:34:480:34:52

That's scandalous.

0:34:530:34:54

Average what we would spend back home - £95 a week.

0:34:560:34:58

-It can vary, you know, a pound or two here or there.

-Yeah.

0:35:000:35:03

Here, for the same...

0:35:030:35:06

is £124.26 a week.

0:35:060:35:09

So, equals...

0:35:090:35:12

£29.26...

0:35:130:35:17

pence of a difference.

0:35:170:35:20

OK, we'll have a wee look at...

0:35:200:35:22

Back in the UK, Helene's monthly mortgage is £500.

0:35:220:35:27

Basing her rental outgoings in Australia on the dream property

0:35:270:35:30

they saw, she would be paying triple that figure down under.

0:35:300:35:34

But could her potential earning power balance the books?

0:35:340:35:37

My income in the UK at the minute, um, for working part-time, is, um...

0:35:370:35:43

£11,185 and...

0:35:430:35:47

over here, um, you know, I would earn,

0:35:470:35:50

-that's the equivalent in English pounds...

-Yeah.

-..£50,700.

0:35:500:35:54

-That's a big difference, like.

-I'm serious!

0:35:540:35:57

It's great news, but will it be enough to cover the bills?

0:35:570:36:00

That's your phone and internet.

0:36:000:36:02

OK, and then groceries. Yeah, this was it...

0:36:040:36:07

They're more expensive here. Equals...

0:36:080:36:12

We are in a plus of...

0:36:120:36:15

£1,271.

0:36:150:36:18

A month!

0:36:180:36:20

A month!

0:36:200:36:21

Oh, my God!

0:36:240:36:25

That's mad.

0:36:250:36:26

£15,252...

0:36:260:36:31

..better off a year.

0:36:320:36:35

That's life-changing to us, Nicole,

0:36:350:36:36

it just opens so many doors for us, financially, you know.

0:36:360:36:41

A big weight off my shoulders.

0:36:410:36:43

Based on our cost of living, we are voting for...

0:36:430:36:46

BOTH: Australia!

0:36:490:36:50

That's a big weight off my mind, you know, to know that we

0:36:520:36:55

can come out here, we're not scrimping and scraping,

0:36:550:36:59

the lifestyle we could have...I would be stupid not to.

0:36:590:37:02

The finances could mean a move to Australia is more likely,

0:37:070:37:10

but, for Nicole, there's still one last stumbling block.

0:37:100:37:14

She's always worried about leaving relatives and friends in the UK.

0:37:140:37:18

So, as their final decision approaches,

0:37:180:37:21

the family sit down together to watch a DVD of messages from home.

0:37:210:37:25

-Hi, Helene, hi, kids.

-Hi.

-Hope you're enjoying the sunshine.

0:37:260:37:30

Hi, guys. I miss yous.

0:37:300:37:32

-Hi, kids.

-Hope yous are doing well.

0:37:320:37:36

Hi, Helene. Hi, kids.

0:37:360:37:37

Helene and the kids are really, really close.

0:37:370:37:39

We gel together, we tend to look after each other,

0:37:390:37:43

and help each other out as well.

0:37:430:37:46

Helene is very fun and she's great company.

0:37:460:37:48

She's a good mum.

0:37:480:37:50

Um, she works hard,

0:37:510:37:53

she looks after her children very well.

0:37:530:37:55

Tiernan's...

0:37:550:37:57

jolly, bubbly.

0:37:570:37:58

Erin, she's just a wee live wire, a wee princess, too.

0:37:580:38:02

Nicole's fun to be around.

0:38:020:38:06

Well, after Paul died,

0:38:060:38:09

she actually had to grow up and become an adult.

0:38:090:38:12

She's helped out, she's been a great helper,

0:38:120:38:15

her mummy would be lost without her.

0:38:150:38:17

If she moves to Australia, I don't think...

0:38:170:38:19

..it would be a better life, you know,

0:38:210:38:23

cos I think she's better off here

0:38:230:38:25

with...

0:38:250:38:27

-friends and family...

-God, I didn't think he felt like that.

0:38:270:38:30

I don't really think words would be

0:38:320:38:34

able to describe how much I miss them.

0:38:340:38:36

Watching them grow up. Tiernan every day reminds me more of my daddy.

0:38:370:38:43

Erin's the youngest of all my wee brothers and sisters.

0:38:430:38:47

She's like my wee princess.

0:38:480:38:49

We'll not forget yous.

0:38:530:38:55

-Never.

-You'll always been in our prayers

0:38:550:38:57

and we'll be thinking about yous all the time.

0:38:570:39:00

I hope it's everything you want it to be.

0:39:000:39:03

And more, but...

0:39:040:39:06

..we'll be always here for you and the kids.

0:39:070:39:11

-Love yous.

-Hope you enjoy.

0:39:110:39:14

(Hug.)

0:39:140:39:15

Well, Helene, love, it's up to you now.

0:39:170:39:19

It's your decision and all I can is wish you all the best,

0:39:190:39:22

see you soon, love yous loads.

0:39:220:39:24

Bye.

0:39:240:39:26

NICOLE CRIES

0:39:260:39:28

That's horrible to watch. You all right?

0:39:300:39:32

You not want to go now? I knew that would change your mind.

0:39:340:39:38

We will miss them, but...

0:39:420:39:43

..they could come over and visit, and we can go over and visit.

0:39:460:39:49

It'd be heartbreaking, I mean, there's Cleona says that you

0:39:490:39:52

remind her more every day of her daddy, your daddy.

0:39:520:39:55

Well, I think we've a lot to talk about.

0:39:550:39:57

Your mind's changed completely.

0:39:570:39:59

I don't want to come any more.

0:40:000:40:02

With Nicole consistently voting for Australia,

0:40:040:40:08

it had looked like Helene had brought her daughter around

0:40:080:40:11

to the idea of a shared future down under, but the thought of

0:40:110:40:15

leaving loved ones behind in the UK has badly affected Nicole.

0:40:150:40:19

Is Helene's dream in danger of slipping from her grasp?

0:40:190:40:23

Having seen the positive effect the week has had on her children,

0:40:250:40:28

that's the last thing Helene wants.

0:40:280:40:30

'Since being here, you know, I've noticed a change in all of us'

0:40:340:40:38

in a different way.

0:40:380:40:39

Tiernan, for the first time today, actually went into the sea,

0:40:390:40:43

enjoying the beach that he said he never liked.

0:40:430:40:46

And, Erin, you know,

0:40:460:40:47

she's out here and she's burning off all that energy.

0:40:470:40:50

Tiernan's noticed a difference in his mum.

0:40:500:40:53

While Mum's been in Australia, I thought

0:40:530:40:55

maybe she's been shouting less and we've been all getting along better.

0:40:550:41:00

While Erin has also bought into the whole lifestyle.

0:41:000:41:03

I really, really like Australia.

0:41:030:41:05

It's really good, and I love the beach.

0:41:050:41:09

Australia could offer the Savages the new start they've been

0:41:090:41:13

searching for.

0:41:130:41:14

'I feel we've been through enough.

0:41:140:41:16

'We've had enough sadness in our lives'

0:41:160:41:18

over the past couple of years, that...

0:41:180:41:21

you know, why not, let's make a fresh start

0:41:210:41:23

'and let's do what we always wanted to do...

0:41:230:41:26

'you know, as a family?'

0:41:260:41:27

While Nicole can see what her mum's trying to achieve...

0:41:290:41:32

What she wants to try and do is rebuild our family and try

0:41:320:41:36

and make us all come closer together.

0:41:360:41:39

..she's still undecided where her future lies.

0:41:390:41:42

To me, it is a hard decision to try and choose here or home.

0:41:420:41:46

And I don't know what I actually think myself I want yet.

0:41:470:41:50

Because home is where the memories lie and here you're

0:41:520:41:56

starting from scratch and you don't have any memories yet.

0:41:560:41:58

So, have the whole family been convinced Australia's

0:42:000:42:03

where their future lies, or is the other side of the world just

0:42:030:42:07

too far from loved ones at home?

0:42:070:42:09

After our amazing week here in Australia,

0:42:100:42:14

we have decided to live in...

0:42:140:42:17

ALL: Australia!

0:42:280:42:29

Yay! Everybody's the same! Oh!

0:42:290:42:32

I didn't think that would have happened!

0:42:320:42:34

I need to think of my future, not just...

0:42:350:42:38

of what it would be like back home.

0:42:380:42:40

I need to think of the positive, instead of the negative.

0:42:400:42:42

I'm surprised everybody voted Australia.

0:42:420:42:44

I knew us three would have, but I didn't think you would have

0:42:440:42:47

after...you know, being upset because of family and friends.

0:42:470:42:52

But, good. Yay! We're all going to Australia!

0:42:520:42:56

So, Australia it is!

0:43:030:43:05

With the whole family on board, the Savages will hopefully soon

0:43:050:43:09

be on their way to starting a new life together down under.

0:43:090:43:13

We wish them all the very best.
