Moving your family

0:00:020:00:03

halfway around the world is a huge

0:00:030:00:06

challenge at the best of times,

0:00:060:00:07

but imagine trying to make it happen

0:00:070:00:09

when those closest to you don't share your dream.

0:00:090:00:13

Christine Makuve wants to swap this...

0:00:130:00:16

for this.

0:00:160:00:17

-My gosh! Look at that!

-But her children don't agree.

0:00:170:00:21

There's like not anything that would make me be like,

0:00:210:00:24

"Yes, I really want to move there."

0:00:240:00:26

-And when they fall in love with everything Australia offers.

-Wow!

0:00:260:00:30

-It's got its own lake in the back!

-Is this part of the house?

0:00:300:00:34

-Yeah!

-I want this house.

0:00:340:00:36

Will they have the finances to make the dream come true?

0:00:360:00:40

I almost feel like, "OK, well, whatever." You know?

0:00:400:00:42

It was a good dream to have, but it's not going to happen.

0:00:420:00:45

For 25 years, Australia has been the number one

0:01:080:01:12

destination for Brits seeking a new life abroad.

0:01:120:01:15

The outdoors lifestyle, sunshine and sense of space are a huge draw,

0:01:150:01:19

but, on average, 11,000 of them

0:01:190:01:22

move back every year with their dreams in tatters.

0:01:220:01:25

The Makuves are in a heartbreaking situation.

0:01:280:01:31

Mum Christine is convinced Australia can offer her family

0:01:320:01:36

the fresh start she believes they so desperately need,

0:01:360:01:39

but her children don't share her dream, and she faces an uphill battle

0:01:390:01:44

to convince them that moving down under can really offer them

0:01:440:01:47

a better life together.

0:01:470:01:49

The journey to Australia takes them 10,000 miles from home.

0:01:510:01:55

As the Makuves arrive in Brisbane, 24 hours in the air has given

0:01:550:01:59

them plenty of time to contemplate the enormity of Christine's plans.

0:01:590:02:04

-It's a demanding journey.

-It took a long time on the plane.

0:02:040:02:08

The journey was incredibly long

0:02:080:02:09

and I find myself thinking about my mum, for instance,

0:02:090:02:12

and how she would cope with a journey like that

0:02:120:02:14

and she would find it very, very difficult to actually do.

0:02:140:02:18

I think I've properly got the sense of how far away Australia is

0:02:180:02:22

just over the last 24 hours.

0:02:220:02:23

The pressure's on for Christine.

0:02:250:02:27

She has just one week to persuade her family Australia is

0:02:270:02:30

where their future lies.

0:02:300:02:32

The Makuve family are mum Christine,

0:02:350:02:37

dad Munya, Vanessa, who's 14, PJ, who's 12, and Tin Tin, age 8.

0:02:370:02:44

They live in Garrison in North Yorkshire.

0:02:440:02:47

Originally from Zimbabwe, Christine and Munya would love

0:02:470:02:50

the outdoor upbringing they enjoyed for their own children.

0:02:500:02:53

We grew up in the incredibly idyllic, you know,

0:02:530:02:59

post-independence years, um, you know, and it was beautiful.

0:02:590:03:04

We both grew up in houses where there were orange trees, mango trees,

0:03:040:03:08

banana trees...

0:03:080:03:10

They fear at the moment that their children are missing out.

0:03:100:03:14

We have lovely kids, full of energy, but they spend their lives indoors.

0:03:140:03:20

And they both believe Australia could offer Vanessa, PJ

0:03:200:03:24

and Tin Tin the childhood they so badly want for them.

0:03:240:03:28

I would love to imagine that my family and myself could

0:03:280:03:32

make a new life for ourselves, you know, make new lives for ourselves in Australia.

0:03:320:03:36

What we are hoping for, um,

0:03:360:03:40

is recreating the life that we had, um,

0:03:400:03:43

-in a setting and a context that the children can relate to.

-Yeah.

0:03:430:03:48

Christine's convinced now is the time to make the move.

0:03:480:03:52

She's aiming towards it, she's working towards it,

0:03:520:03:54

she's planning towards it, she's dreaming about it.

0:03:540:03:56

It means everything to her.

0:03:560:03:58

Last year, army officer Munya was faced with the threat of redundancy.

0:03:580:04:02

Although I wasn't made redundant,

0:04:020:04:04

that started to, you know, plant the seed that anything is possible,

0:04:040:04:08

and that speeded up Christine's urgency to go to Australia now.

0:04:080:04:12

And worse was to come

0:04:120:04:14

when he was struck down with a life-threatening illness.

0:04:140:04:17

It was incredibly traumatic.

0:04:170:04:19

Um, and I was faced with the first time...

0:04:190:04:22

..um, with the prospect that...

0:04:230:04:26

Munya might not...

0:04:260:04:27

..might not be with me until my old age,

0:04:290:04:33

so that was incredibly difficult.

0:04:330:04:36

But I think one of the key things that both of us

0:04:380:04:42

took away from that, if you've got a dream, you know, try and pursue it.

0:04:420:04:46

Munya can see the benefits of a move,

0:04:460:04:48

but feels emigrating now would be a big mistake.

0:04:480:04:52

In five years' time, I reach my pension point.

0:04:520:04:54

I would really have to receive a very good opportunity,

0:04:540:04:58

a very good offer in Australia...

0:04:580:05:00

-In order to leave five years before retirement.

-It is a big sacrifice.

0:05:000:05:04

In my mind, especially given what's gone on in the last 12 months,

0:05:040:05:07

five years is a long time and anything could happen.

0:05:070:05:10

It creates a very difficult tension there.

0:05:100:05:13

As an army family, the children have experienced a lot of disruption,

0:05:130:05:18

and fed up with moving every two years,

0:05:180:05:20

Vanessa and PJ opted for boarding school.

0:05:200:05:23

But Christine wants her children close again.

0:05:230:05:26

Australia would allow us, you know,

0:05:260:05:28

finally to have stability as a family.

0:05:280:05:31

We would get the chance to see our children growing up within

0:05:310:05:35

the household, rather than having them at boarding school

0:05:350:05:37

for most of the year and having them just on holidays.

0:05:370:05:41

But plans to emigrate have had a mixed response from the children.

0:05:410:05:45

When Mummy first mentioned the idea of moving to Australia,

0:05:450:05:48

she was not a very popular person in the house.

0:05:480:05:52

Tin Tin, the little 'un, is eight years old, um, he took it fine.

0:05:520:05:57

Tin Tin's ready to go, but Vanessa and PJ are happy at home.

0:05:570:06:02

I don't really want to live in Australia.

0:06:020:06:04

I really want to just stay here.

0:06:040:06:06

For me, there's not anything that would make me be like,

0:06:060:06:09

"Yes, I really want to move there."

0:06:090:06:11

And leaving family and friends would be a massive wrench.

0:06:150:06:19

We see our family like all the time, like,

0:06:190:06:21

every week we always see them and we're really close to them,

0:06:210:06:24

and it would be really hard to leave them behind and just to move.

0:06:240:06:28

Christine knows the family's week ahead will either see her dream

0:06:280:06:32

come one step closer to reality, or possibly disappear for good.

0:06:320:06:37

This week is incredibly important,

0:06:370:06:39

because it gives me the opportunity, firstly,

0:06:390:06:42

to actually experience Australia first-hand,

0:06:420:06:45

which I haven't done, and also gives me an opportunity to be able to

0:06:450:06:50

hopefully persuade my family that this is the place to be.

0:06:500:06:53

The Makuves are facing a huge emotional dilemma.

0:06:540:06:58

For Munya, finding the perfect job will be key if Christine's ever to

0:06:590:07:03

persuade him that now is the right time to follow

0:07:030:07:06

her dream of a better future.

0:07:060:07:07

The family are spending their trial week on the Gold Coast.

0:07:160:07:20

They'll be staying in the Logan area, 30 minutes from Brisbane city

0:07:200:07:24

and 35 minutes from the beach, it's ideally placed.

0:07:240:07:27

And with almost 900 parks and reserves,

0:07:290:07:31

it should appeal to the Makuves' love of the outdoors.

0:07:310:07:35

Their base for the week will be this three-bedroom house.

0:07:350:07:38

It's the family's first taste of the life they could have.

0:07:380:07:42

-Oh, my gosh!

-Wow! It's got a pool!

-Look at that pool.

0:07:420:07:47

This is absolutely fabulous.

0:07:470:07:51

Can you see that, PJ? Will you look at the views!

0:07:510:07:54

-This is breathtaking, isn't it?

-Wow, yeah.

0:07:540:07:56

The location seems to be a hit

0:07:570:07:59

and everyone's pleased with the interiors as well.

0:07:590:08:02

Wow. OK.

0:08:030:08:06

-Whoa!

-It feels very roomy.

0:08:060:08:09

It's got all the lounging space outside

0:08:090:08:11

and then it's got the pool and I just like it. I just really like it.

0:08:110:08:16

That's a good initial reaction from Vanessa

0:08:160:08:19

and the house is pushing the right buttons for the boys too.

0:08:190:08:23

-Cool! No way!

-Oh, my gosh! That is the coolest thing ever!

0:08:230:08:30

It's a good-sized double bedroom, isn't it? Oh, do you know what...?

0:08:300:08:33

-I think this one is my room!

-Really?!

-Yeah!

0:08:330:08:37

You might have to do a little bit of haggling.

0:08:370:08:40

-That's a nice view.

-Wow.

0:08:410:08:43

-Oh, gosh! It's really large in here!

-Yeah.

-Two great big showerheads.

0:08:430:08:46

-Wow.

-No, this is awesome.

0:08:460:08:48

Their home for the week is going down well with everyone, and it looks

0:08:480:08:51

like Munya's already beginning to see the appeal of a life down under.

0:08:510:08:56

I think I'd be ready and willing to work hard to attain

0:08:560:09:00

a house like this and buy a house like this.

0:09:000:09:02

Even Vanessa could be coming round.

0:09:020:09:05

I would consider, like, think about moving here. Think about it.

0:09:050:09:09

I really like this house. And I like swimming and there's a pool.

0:09:090:09:16

I think it's going to be a hugely successful week

0:09:160:09:19

because we've barely started the week and, you know, I've already

0:09:190:09:23

scored a success with the most negative member of the family.

0:09:230:09:26

Let's hope it continues, Christine!

0:09:260:09:29

Because Munya works for the military in the UK,

0:09:330:09:36

the Makuves live in army accommodation.

0:09:360:09:38

So, buying a house down under would be their first

0:09:380:09:41

permanent property.

0:09:410:09:42

I would love open plan, you know, the kind of typical sprawling open plan

0:09:420:09:46

Aussie type house, and a pool would be...you know, almost an essential.

0:09:460:09:53

Um, and a garden for the children to play in.

0:09:530:09:55

We're looking at a budget of about £350,000.

0:09:550:09:58

We do want something that has enough space to, you know, at least

0:09:580:10:03

plant fruit trees and create a lovely garden in our outside space.

0:10:030:10:08

We have a vision in our minds about how our lives would be there

0:10:080:10:11

and how our children's lives would be,

0:10:110:10:14

and if we could not give them a home that they would be happy to

0:10:140:10:18

live in, there'd be no point in removing them, really.

0:10:180:10:20

So, it would be absolutely key, um, finding the right house.

0:10:200:10:24

To give the Makuves an idea of what's available

0:10:260:10:28

on the Gold Coast property market, we've selected three properties.

0:10:280:10:32

After seeing them, they'll find out how much each one costs.

0:10:320:10:36

The first house is in Beechmont,

0:10:370:10:39

a residential village in the Gold Coast hinterland.

0:10:390:10:43

Although it's a 45-minute drive to the nearest beach,

0:10:430:10:45

the area offers stunning landscapes.

0:10:450:10:48

This four-bedroom home could be just what the Makuves are looking for.

0:10:490:10:54

Come here and look at this house.

0:10:550:10:58

Look at this house! Oh, my gosh! It's beautiful.

0:10:580:11:01

But will the indoors impress?

0:11:010:11:04

This is a small...

0:11:040:11:05

-Yeah.

-..small lounge.

0:11:060:11:08

PJ's definitely not sold...

0:11:080:11:11

I prefer more modern properties

0:11:110:11:13

and I think it's just a bit too old-fashioned and small.

0:11:130:11:16

Vanessa's underwhelmed...

0:11:160:11:18

It's all right, it's just a little bit cramped.

0:11:180:11:20

-..and even Christine's bubble is burst.

-I'm losing, um...

0:11:200:11:26

momentum in terms of my excitement. It's actually quite small.

0:11:260:11:30

-This is the kitchen...

-OK.

0:11:300:11:33

..I take it.

0:11:330:11:35

-Yeah.

-This is really old.

-It's small.

0:11:350:11:39

I think it confirms to me that the house, generally, is a tiny house.

0:11:390:11:44

But things soon take a turn for the better.

0:11:440:11:47

-Oh...my...goodness...gracious...me!

-This is beautiful.

-This is unusual!

0:11:470:11:54

SHE LAUGHS

0:11:540:11:56

What's...what's...?

0:11:560:11:58

-It's like a little sun lounge.

-This is a lovely room.

0:11:580:12:00

-This is a beautiful room.

-I think it's a lovely room.

0:12:000:12:02

It's a room that I can imagine doing a lot with.

0:12:020:12:05

This hasn't completely won me over, but it's certainly a very,

0:12:050:12:09

very positive aspect of this house.

0:12:090:12:11

And outdoors lifts everyone's spirits.

0:12:120:12:15

-Oh, my gosh!

-Now, this is gorgeous.

-Oh, now, this is beautiful.

0:12:150:12:18

It sort of makes me want to write poetry or something.

0:12:180:12:21

THEY LAUGH It's just...!

0:12:210:12:23

This could not be further removed from most of life in the UK.

0:12:230:12:27

-Oh, my goodness!

-You guys, look at that.

-Oh, my gosh! Look at that!

0:12:270:12:33

-Munya, can you imagine this as your back yard?

-I feel like sitting down.

0:12:330:12:37

-Yeah, let's sit down.

-Oh, my gosh!

0:12:370:12:39

The garden's everything Christine could wish for.

0:12:390:12:42

It just reminds me, you know, of home

0:12:420:12:44

and of growing up back in Zimbabwe, but, I don't know, I'm speechless.

0:12:440:12:49

If they came to visit, everyone would love this.

0:12:490:12:51

Everybody would fall in love with this.

0:12:510:12:53

The house's location

0:12:530:12:54

and spectacular garden has made up for its old-fashioned feel

0:12:540:12:58

and lack of space, but with the budget of £350,000,

0:12:580:13:03

can the Makuves afford it?

0:13:030:13:05

-Do you want to turn it over?

-Tin Tin, let's see.

0:13:060:13:09

Oh, my gosh!

0:13:120:13:15

SHE LAUGHS

0:13:150:13:17

That's £55,000 under budget.

0:13:170:13:21

-That's just ludicrous.

-Wow.

0:13:210:13:24

That is well under budget.

0:13:240:13:27

That changes absolutely everything, because, if we did buy this,

0:13:270:13:32

we could very easily reconfigure...

0:13:320:13:35

-the house, and spruce it up.

-It still would need some consideration.

-Yes.

0:13:350:13:40

Knowing this property is within reach is a fantastic start

0:13:400:13:43

for Christine. Property two is just outside Upper Coomera.

0:13:430:13:48

Riverstone Crossing's a thriving new community.

0:13:480:13:51

It's close to a major motorway for easy access to Brisbane

0:13:510:13:54

and Surfers Paradise, and has national parks on its doorstep.

0:13:540:13:58

This modern four-bedroom show house could offer

0:13:580:14:01

the family their perfect setting.

0:14:010:14:03

Oh...my...goodness...gracious...me.

0:14:030:14:08

-Whoa.

-Oh, my gosh!

0:14:080:14:10

This is just...this is just stunning! This is just...this is fantastic!

0:14:130:14:19

-The open plan-ness of it, the size of it...

-I absolutely love it. Amazing.

0:14:190:14:25

I just love it! This is just...

0:14:250:14:27

-This is it.

-This is it, yes. THEY LAUGH

0:14:270:14:31

Even PJ's impressed.

0:14:310:14:33

It looks really modern and I just really like the house,

0:14:330:14:37

because of how big it is and there's a lot of space.

0:14:370:14:40

They're so enthralled, Christine's started making plans.

0:14:400:14:45

-Wow, Christine, look at that.

-Oh! This is absolutely beautiful.

-Yeah.

0:14:450:14:50

But this, for me, would be the dining room.

0:14:500:14:53

But what about that all-important outside space?

0:14:530:14:56

OK, so the outside...

0:14:570:15:00

-very nice, very small.

-It's pleasant.

-It's pleasant enough.

0:15:000:15:03

-It's pleasant.

-It's very small.

-It's compact.

0:15:030:15:06

OK, the garden's not enormous. Maybe the bedrooms will impress.

0:15:060:15:12

-This is huge.

-Awesome. Really good.

-Absolutely fabulous.

0:15:130:15:17

-Before you even speak, you want to see the en suite.

-Really?

0:15:170:15:21

SHE GASPS

0:15:220:15:24

Oh, my gosh!

0:15:240:15:25

Oh, my gosh!

0:15:250:15:28

Wow.

0:15:280:15:29

It's just crazily big.

0:15:310:15:34

There's a balcony outside as well, I mean, it just gets better

0:15:340:15:37

and better with this bedroom. This is just fabulous.

0:15:370:15:41

I think this house is doing it for us.

0:15:410:15:44

HE LAUGHS

0:15:440:15:45

This house is certainly...

0:15:450:15:46

The outdoor space might be limited,

0:15:460:15:48

but this house has everything else the Makuves

0:15:480:15:50

have been dreaming of,

0:15:500:15:52

but Munya's worried it will be beyond their £350,000 budget.

0:15:520:15:57

My heart is in my mouth at the moment

0:15:570:15:59

and I'm hoping that this house is somewhere close to...

0:15:590:16:03

what we're expecting.

0:16:030:16:05

I think it's going to be over.

0:16:050:16:06

-Do you think it's going to be over? I agree, Tin Tin.

-Ready?

0:16:060:16:10

Vanessa, do you want to do the honours?

0:16:100:16:12

Wow.

0:16:150:16:16

It's just over budget,

0:16:160:16:17

but if Christine and Munya were to increase their earnings

0:16:170:16:20

in Australia, this house could be affordable.

0:16:200:16:23

I thought it was going to be significantly over £400,000.

0:16:230:16:27

That is just really food for thought.

0:16:270:16:29

If we could build this property in a different place where there's

0:16:290:16:32

-land, that would be the perfect solution for us.

-Yeah.

0:16:320:16:34

Plenty of outdoor space remains high on Christine and Munya's wish list,

0:16:340:16:39

so property three should fit the bill.

0:16:390:16:42

Set within its own two and a half acres, this four-bedroom,

0:16:420:16:45

two-bathroom family home is full of surprises.

0:16:450:16:49

-I think...

-It, it, it...

0:16:490:16:51

-It's attached to this.

-It looks like it's on the land of the house.

0:16:510:16:54

-It's got a tennis court!

-It's on the land.

0:16:540:16:55

It's got its own tennis court, Tin Tin. What do you think?

0:16:550:16:58

-It's too good for words.

-It's too good for words.

0:16:580:17:02

First impression - absolutely awesome.

0:17:020:17:04

Yeah, absolutely stunning and we've not even been inside.

0:17:040:17:07

To be honest, I'm not feeling too much pressure to go inside cos

0:17:070:17:10

I love it that much on the outside!

0:17:100:17:13

It can't get better than that...can it?

0:17:130:17:17

Ooh!

0:17:170:17:18

-Oh, I say!

-Wow.

-No, this is good.

0:17:180:17:23

This is not good. This is fabulous.

0:17:230:17:26

-The design is obviously well thought out.

-Yeah.

0:17:260:17:29

Double bedroom, good-sized bedroom.

0:17:290:17:32

It's a nice room and you can have a nice view of the outside.

0:17:320:17:35

But not everyone's completely convinced.

0:17:350:17:38

It's a nice house and I...

0:17:380:17:41

couldn't really imagine myself living here, but it is spacious.

0:17:410:17:47

This is my room and it feels like my room already,

0:17:470:17:50

-and I've not even moved in.

-Oh, Chris, come and see this.

0:17:500:17:53

-The en suite is amazing.

-Oh, my gosh! Oh, my gosh!

0:17:530:17:57

(It's a spa bath, Munya!)

0:17:570:17:59

I would get in there and never get out, honestly.

0:17:590:18:02

But then you'd miss what's waiting outside, Christine.

0:18:020:18:06

Whoa! Look at what I've just found. Come on.

0:18:060:18:08

You guys have got to see this.

0:18:080:18:10

Oh...my...goodness!

0:18:100:18:13

-Whoa!

-SHE LAUGHS

0:18:130:18:15

-It's got its own lake in the back!

-Is this part of the house?

-Yeah!

0:18:150:18:20

And PJ could be turning.

0:18:200:18:23

It kind of does change my opinion about the house cos

0:18:230:18:26

the outside is, like, it's really, really,

0:18:260:18:29

really big and spacious and it has its own pond, so...

0:18:290:18:34

it would kind of make me want to live here.

0:18:340:18:36

This property's a dream come true for Christine,

0:18:410:18:44

and she's carried away with excitement.

0:18:440:18:47

-We could get ducks!

-We could put ducks in there.

-We could get ducks!

0:18:470:18:50

It's like being in a storybook.

0:18:500:18:52

I would never have imagined in my wildest dreams that, you know,

0:18:520:18:58

a house like this would be anything that we would ever...

0:18:580:19:02

-consider as being a possibility.

-The question is...

-How much?

0:19:020:19:05

This house has it all, but can they afford to call it home?

0:19:070:19:11

What is the price going to be?

0:19:110:19:15

I've really connected with this house and it's...it's beautiful, and

0:19:150:19:19

I'm terrified that it's going to be completely over budget

0:19:190:19:22

and, you know, our dreams are going to be cruelly dashed to the ground.

0:19:220:19:26

-Shall we find out?

-SHE LAUGHS

0:19:260:19:28

PJ, let's go for it.

0:19:340:19:36

That's £56,000 over, but, if they stretch their budget,

0:19:380:19:43

could it still be within reach?

0:19:430:19:44

-I don't want to look.

-You won't believe this. Open your eyes.

0:19:440:19:47

-Really? It's over budget, but...

-But...

0:19:490:19:52

But not by as much as I had imagined.

0:19:520:19:55

-And there's no work that needs to be done.

-No!

0:19:550:19:58

That's within reach, and for something like this,

0:19:580:20:01

-I fully expected it to be...

-I want this house.

-So do I.

0:20:010:20:04

I want this house.

0:20:040:20:06

The dream home feels within touching distance,

0:20:060:20:09

but Christine knows there's still an awful lot to do

0:20:090:20:12

if she's to make her dream a reality.

0:20:120:20:14

This house obviously hinges on all the job things coming together

0:20:140:20:18

and so that's even more critical now.

0:20:180:20:21

I want this house!

0:20:210:20:22

THEY LAUGH

0:20:220:20:24

I want this house.

0:20:240:20:25

It's been an incredibly positive day for the Makuves.

0:20:260:20:29

The first house felt a bit old-fashioned,

0:20:290:20:32

but all that was forgotten when they got to the incredible views.

0:20:320:20:36

They loved the open plan, contemporary feel of

0:20:360:20:39

property number two, but the small garden put them off.

0:20:390:20:43

Property three was the dream home, but, with a price tag to match.

0:20:430:20:47

With this visits over, it's time for the family to decide.

0:20:480:20:51

Will it be home or away?

0:20:510:20:54

Based on the properties that we have viewed today, our vote goes to...

0:20:540:20:59

ALL: Australia!

0:21:040:21:06

Oh, my gosh! Is it a full house?

0:21:070:21:10

Wow! I think that's quite... That's remarkable.

0:21:100:21:14

Individually, the houses are really nice.

0:21:140:21:16

- I would prefer to live in Australia on the basis of the houses.

0:21:160:21:20

They have a lot of space and I really want to try the tennis court.

0:21:200:21:25

The family's positive reaction is music to Christine's ears,

0:21:290:21:33

but if the move down under is to happen,

0:21:330:21:35

it's essential both she and Munya secure good jobs.

0:21:350:21:39

Back home in the UK, Munya's a commissioned officer

0:21:400:21:42

in the British Army.

0:21:420:21:44

My job means a lot to me.

0:21:440:21:46

It's everything, really. It's defined...

0:21:480:21:51

It defines who I am as an individual.

0:21:510:21:54

Um, it's...defined what we've become as a family.

0:21:540:21:58

It's also had a huge impact on Christine's career.

0:21:580:22:01

I've previously worked as a local education authority manager,

0:22:010:22:05

but because of the fact that we move around so frequently,

0:22:050:22:09

um, it's a very difficult sort of career to take with you.

0:22:090:22:12

So, I started teaching because that's portable.

0:22:120:22:16

After more than a decade in the army, Munya's unsure about

0:22:160:22:19

working on Civvy Street, but he does believe his skills are transferable.

0:22:190:22:23

The one thing that might, and I think that will bring me

0:22:230:22:26

fulfilment, is working in a management consultancy.

0:22:260:22:29

I'd want to be sure that the benefit I'd reap from that job would

0:22:290:22:35

cover for what I'm sacrificing now.

0:22:350:22:37

The family's whole future could rest on today

0:22:370:22:40

and Christine knows there's a lot at stake as she takes Vanessa, PJ

0:22:400:22:44

and Tin Tin to visit St Stephen's College.

0:22:440:22:47

They're met by headmaster Jamie, and Mary, head of enrolment.

0:22:470:22:51

While the children get a tour of the school,

0:22:510:22:53

Christine quizzes Jamie about potential teaching jobs.

0:22:530:22:56

Well, the first thing is there's a lot of schools in the Gold Coast.

0:22:560:22:59

You get registered to teach and then, once you're registered to

0:22:590:23:02

teach, we would then have a look at what you've done, what your

0:23:020:23:05

experience has been and we'd slot you into that band and step level here.

0:23:050:23:08

I see. That's excellent.

0:23:080:23:10

And in terms of how those bands relate to actual salaries,

0:23:100:23:14

-what is the rate?

-Well, actually, I have a document here.

-Oh, I see!

0:23:140:23:17

-That's brilliant!

-So...

0:23:170:23:20

normally, you'd come in at what we call band two, step one,

0:23:200:23:23

-so that's around 63,000 Australian dollars.

-Right, I see. OK.

0:23:230:23:27

-So, that's about, what? 40 something thousand pounds.

-I see.

0:23:270:23:30

That is significantly higher than what I'm currently getting

0:23:300:23:33

now as a teacher with several years of experience,

0:23:330:23:36

so that sounds very encouraging.

0:23:360:23:39

Great news for Christine.

0:23:390:23:41

Across town, Munya's exploring his potential work opportunities.

0:23:410:23:44

We've arranged for him

0:23:440:23:46

to meet management consultant Andrew Johnstone-Burt.

0:23:460:23:49

Andrew had previously been in the Royal Navy

0:23:490:23:52

-and he's impressed with Munya's CV.

-You've got three Masters.

0:23:520:23:56

How good is that?! Three Masters degrees!

0:23:560:24:00

You clearly have this fantastic education and training background.

0:24:000:24:04

Added to that is your strategic skills.

0:24:040:24:05

You can clearly think strategically.

0:24:050:24:08

Um, the question then is, it's a

0:24:080:24:10

case of staging the transition...to this new world for you.

0:24:100:24:15

Every occupation has its ladder.

0:24:150:24:17

You'll be coming in in the middle of that

0:24:170:24:20

ladder around the sort of manager level.

0:24:200:24:22

-What are the prospects like at the moment?

-Lots of prospects.

0:24:220:24:26

Consulting is flourishing.

0:24:260:24:28

We grew 25% last year

0:24:280:24:29

and there are lots of opportunities which come with that.

0:24:290:24:34

Encouraging news so far, and if the salary's right,

0:24:340:24:37

it could allay Munya's fears about leaving the army early.

0:24:370:24:40

At a manager level, um, sort of at the 150,000 mark,

0:24:400:24:45

the senior consultant, somewhere around the 100,000 mark.

0:24:450:24:48

Well, at the moment, I'm, um, just round about below £50,000, which,

0:24:480:24:53

I think, translates to about 70,000,

0:24:530:24:57

or 75,000 Australian dollars.

0:24:570:25:00

So, that would really be good for me. That would work for me.

0:25:000:25:03

That's Munya on the right track,

0:25:030:25:05

but Christine has another challenge to overcome - finding a school

0:25:050:25:09

they're happy with is crucial if she's to win round PJ and Vanessa.

0:25:090:25:13

Hopefully, St Stephen's will impress.

0:25:130:25:16

This section has been revamped recently in the last two years.

0:25:160:25:19

It's absolutely beautiful.

0:25:190:25:21

-Well resourced and well designed.

-Hmm. Yes, it is.

0:25:210:25:25

It's one of the best in Queensland.

0:25:250:25:26

The children are worried about making friends.

0:25:260:25:29

If the people were like...if most people who came here were

0:25:290:25:32

British, then it would be a lot easier, but seeing as

0:25:320:25:35

though they're Australian, it might be a bit harder to get on with them.

0:25:350:25:38

Yes, predominantly Australians, but a lot of British citizens have also

0:25:380:25:44

come to our school, so you'll hear and you'll see a lot of Brits here.

0:25:440:25:48

You will settle reasonably fast

0:25:480:25:51

and we will help you settle by providing buddies.

0:25:510:25:55

And the buddies just aren't given you for the day, they're

0:25:550:25:58

given you for the term or the time that you're in the classroom.

0:25:580:26:02

That's fantastic.

0:26:020:26:03

It's been a great day all round,

0:26:030:26:06

but has it been enough to win Munya over?

0:26:060:26:08

Based on the information that we have today about jobs,

0:26:080:26:11

our vote goes to...

0:26:110:26:12

-Australia.

-Unsure.

0:26:180:26:20

-Unsure?

-Yeah.

0:26:220:26:23

What's there to be unsure about?

0:26:240:26:26

Well, to be fair, Christine, the prospects look very bright,

0:26:260:26:30

but so does the lottery.

0:26:300:26:32

There's no guarantee that we'll get here

0:26:320:26:34

and everything will work out well.

0:26:340:26:36

It's 100 and something thousand dollars

0:26:360:26:38

and a consultancy career.

0:26:380:26:40

-But I'm five years away from my retirement point.

-OK.

0:26:400:26:44

-Australia.

-Unsure.

0:26:460:26:48

That's a major set back for Christine.

0:26:550:26:57

Despite everything he's seen and heard so far,

0:26:570:27:00

Munya's still resisting the move.

0:27:000:27:02

But, halfway through the trial week,

0:27:020:27:05

are PJ and Vanessa any closer to sharing their mum's dream?

0:27:050:27:09

It's been a total sort of curve ball in terms of the children.

0:27:090:27:12

We've been surprised by how positive Vanessa has actually been.

0:27:120:27:16

She seems, in a way, even though she hasn't quite said that,

0:27:160:27:19

to sort of be coming round cos we expected her to be completely,

0:27:190:27:24

um, to completely disengage.

0:27:240:27:25

This is our only chance, you know, to see it before we decide,

0:27:250:27:28

so I'm up for trying everything out, you know, seeing what it's like.

0:27:280:27:32

PJ is approaching everything completely with

0:27:320:27:35

the shutters down and just saying, you know,

0:27:350:27:38

"I'm not even going to engage with that."

0:27:380:27:40

My concern is actually, apart from just not wanting to come here,

0:27:400:27:43

you can actually see the mood dropping at different points.

0:27:430:27:47

It's like...yeah, it doesn't matter how much fun he has or how

0:27:470:27:50

much he likes the school or how much he liked the houses or anything,

0:27:500:27:54

I think it's just because he doesn't want to move here.

0:27:540:27:58

It's just really being away from family,

0:27:580:28:01

having to move to a different side of the world away from friends.

0:28:010:28:05

I am finding it really hard to just imagine being here.

0:28:050:28:09

Everything rests on Christine's ability to convince her

0:28:180:28:21

entire family that a move down under offers them the best possible future,

0:28:210:28:27

and spending more time together is a huge part of her dream.

0:28:270:28:30

So, can a day out Aussie style bring them a step closer?

0:28:300:28:34

The Makuves start their day exploring the local area.

0:28:390:28:43

-Oh, my gosh!

-That has my name on it!

0:28:430:28:46

-I know!

-That's brilliant.

-Oh, my goodness!

0:28:460:28:48

Where is the one that says "Mum and Dad"?

0:28:480:28:50

What do you say?

0:28:500:28:51

-Seeing the children having a fantastic time is great.

-Yeah.

0:28:510:28:56

-Vanessa has been...she's been completely giddy.

-Yeah.

0:28:560:28:59

I could come here, like, every weekend

0:29:000:29:02

and just keep exploring and stuff.

0:29:020:29:04

And the family get up close and personal

0:29:070:29:09

with some of the local wildlife.

0:29:090:29:11

-This one here is our black-headed python.

-Aah!

0:29:110:29:14

I did not know that I would ever be able to say "snake"

0:29:140:29:16

and "fantastic" in the same sentence until today, but I really enjoyed it.

0:29:160:29:20

The Makuves move on to enjoy some time out on the beach.

0:29:240:29:28

The day's gone down well with PJ.

0:29:330:29:36

The beaches were quite good and, um...

0:29:370:29:40

I think the mall was quite good as well. I quite enjoyed the day.

0:29:400:29:44

So, could he and Vanessa see themselves enjoying this

0:29:440:29:47

kind of lifestyle on a more permanent basis?

0:29:470:29:50

I can see some benefits in making a move to Australia,

0:29:500:29:53

but I don't think it has really changed my...

0:29:530:29:57

opinion much, but it was a nice day.

0:29:570:30:01

I don't think I've started to form a proper decision yet,

0:30:010:30:03

but it's helping.

0:30:030:30:05

It's been a wonderful day,

0:30:050:30:07

despite the fact that the weather is not that good today.

0:30:070:30:10

We've enjoyed ourselves as if it's been bright and sunny.

0:30:100:30:13

I'm feeling quite optimistic about the day today.

0:30:130:30:17

I think everybody was actually really happy.

0:30:170:30:19

I'm hoping for at least an 80% vote...for Australia, but we'll see.

0:30:190:30:23

We'll see.

0:30:230:30:25

Her day sampling the Aussie lifestyle has given

0:30:250:30:28

the family some valuable thinking time.

0:30:280:30:31

It could be Christine's best chance at winning PJ

0:30:310:30:33

and Vanessa round, so has it worked?

0:30:330:30:36

Based on what we've done today, our vote goes to...

0:30:360:30:39

SOME: Australia!

0:30:450:30:46

Undecided?

0:30:490:30:50

I like what we did today, when we went to the beaches and stuff like

0:30:500:30:55

that, but I'm quite sure you could do similar stuff in the UK as well.

0:30:550:30:59

- It was really good and it was fun, but it just wasn't...you know,

0:30:590:31:02

I thought we could do something similar, you know, in the UK.

0:31:020:31:06

I sort of get your point in a way.

0:31:060:31:10

However, because of the weather, there is a very, very limited,

0:31:100:31:13

you know, window of opportunity in the year where you can do

0:31:130:31:17

things like that, so you can do it in the UK, but the point is,

0:31:170:31:21

you can't do it all the time, whereas, in Australia,

0:31:210:31:23

you might be able to.

0:31:230:31:25

Christine's trying to stay positive,

0:31:290:31:31

but will the reality of the cost of living down under cast a cloud?

0:31:310:31:35

Back in the UK, the Makuves live in army accommodation,

0:31:350:31:39

so they don't have a house of their own to sell.

0:31:390:31:41

They do have savings, but whether there's enough to

0:31:410:31:44

achieve their dreams remains to be seen.

0:31:440:31:47

To help them do the figures,

0:31:470:31:48

we've prepared a breakdown of their monthly expenses.

0:31:480:31:52

-OK, this is the shopping.

-Right.

0:31:520:31:54

Sausages - their mid-range value is £4 more expensive.

0:31:540:31:59

-Wow!

-That's quite expensive.

-That is a lot.

-Right.

0:31:590:32:03

-Per month...

-Per month...

0:32:030:32:05

-£1,333.

-I can't believe that.

0:32:050:32:09

Compared to £617 in the UK.

0:32:090:32:11

That is, you know, double and a bit.

0:32:130:32:15

-Goodness me.

-I can't believe that.

0:32:150:32:17

That is a difference, Christine, of...

0:32:170:32:19

-(My gosh.)

-£716 a month.

0:32:210:32:24

That's way more than Christine had ever expected

0:32:240:32:27

and there's more to come.

0:32:270:32:29

Basing their mortgage on the dream property,

0:32:290:32:31

they now have to calculate their entire monthly outgoings.

0:32:310:32:35

Total figures...

0:32:350:32:37

is a minus £2,065.

0:32:370:32:42

2-0-6-5.

0:32:420:32:43

And 78p.

0:32:430:32:46

I don't know how we're going to come up from this, I mean, you know...

0:32:460:32:49

it's kind of, you almost feel like, "OK, well, whatever." You know?

0:32:490:32:52

It was a good dream to have, but it's not going to happen.

0:32:520:32:56

With the costs mounting against Australia,

0:32:560:32:59

can their higher salary prospects help?

0:32:590:33:02

Main income...the difference there would be...

0:33:020:33:06

-£24,500.

-Yeah.

0:33:060:33:09

That you would earn more...

0:33:090:33:10

..than in the UK.

0:33:110:33:13

And a full-time teaching job down under could potentially mean

0:33:130:33:17

an increase of £34,000 a year for Christine.

0:33:170:33:21

Wow.

0:33:210:33:22

Wow.

0:33:230:33:24

That kind of starts to change things slightly, doesn't it?

0:33:240:33:27

Looks like the dream could be back on.

0:33:270:33:30

We would earn £45,000 more than we're earning now.

0:33:300:33:35

So, you mean £45,000 on top of what we currently earn

0:33:350:33:39

on a combined basis.

0:33:390:33:40

-That's a big wow, isn't it?

-And that's after tax.

-Wow!

0:33:400:33:45

-It does work out to, you know, considerably more...

-Yeah.

0:33:450:33:48

..on a monthly basis than we currently are paying out.

0:33:480:33:53

However, we would still be, you know...

0:33:530:33:56

-£20,000 better off per year...

-Even with the increased expenses.

0:33:560:33:59

..including that large mortgage.

0:33:590:34:00

Exactly and that would include that lovely big house with

0:34:000:34:03

the tennis court and swimming pool and acreage and still £20,000,

0:34:030:34:08

after tax, in the pocket.

0:34:080:34:10

That's a sizeable sum,

0:34:100:34:12

but is it enough for Munya to buy into Christine's plans?

0:34:120:34:15

Based on the financial comparison of the costs and benefits,

0:34:170:34:21

our vote goes to...

0:34:210:34:22

BOTH: Australia!

0:34:250:34:26

-It's a no-brainer, isn't it?

-Yeah, well...

0:34:310:34:33

From the financial point of view -

0:34:330:34:35

a no-brainer.

0:34:350:34:36

Yeah, looking at the final figures and what

0:34:360:34:39

we could potentially save, um, the difference is insurmountable.

0:34:390:34:43

Absolutely.

0:34:430:34:44

With Munya swayed by the figures,

0:34:490:34:50

Christine's dream looks tantalisingly close,

0:34:500:34:53

but the final bridge in this journey is often the hardest to cross -

0:34:530:34:58

saying goodbye to loved ones.

0:34:580:35:00

We've prepared a DVD of messages from friends

0:35:000:35:03

and family back in the UK.

0:35:030:35:05

So, kids, are you all OK to watch this?

0:35:050:35:08

Yes.

0:35:080:35:10

-- Yeah.

-Yeah, OK.

0:35:100:35:12

SHE INHALES Let's do this, then.

0:35:120:35:15

Hi, guys.

0:35:150:35:16

Hello, everyone. How are you? Miss you so much.

0:35:160:35:20

-Hi, Christine.

-Oh, Mummy!

-It's Mum.

0:35:200:35:23

I miss you, you know that.

0:35:230:35:25

Christine...

0:35:250:35:26

..from when she grew up,

0:35:270:35:29

she was a wonderful girl.

0:35:290:35:31

She is a really good girl, perfect, polite, bright.

0:35:310:35:35

Munya...

0:35:350:35:37

..is the reliable person.

0:35:370:35:40

Most of the times, he keeps his promises.

0:35:420:35:44

And he's very generous.

0:35:450:35:47

The children are brilliant...

0:35:490:35:50

I love my grandchildren. They're wonderful.

0:35:500:35:53

Vanessa's really nice, um...

0:35:540:35:56

kind. She's very clever.

0:35:560:35:59

PJ and Tin Tin are just the funny people, really!

0:35:590:36:02

They're really funny, yeah.

0:36:020:36:04

I'm going to miss them greatly.

0:36:050:36:07

I know I'll be able and visit and that,

0:36:070:36:10

but that's not going to be the same, but all the same...

0:36:100:36:13

It'll just be like I've lost something, you know,

0:36:140:36:18

like within the family it'll be really sad.

0:36:180:36:21

Em...

0:36:210:36:22

(Sorry.) Yeah, it'll be really sad, I suppose, but, um...

0:36:220:36:27

It's their decision, really, isn't it? So, yeah.

0:36:280:36:31

I want you to know that if you decide to move, you're going

0:36:330:36:37

to be greatly missed here.

0:36:370:36:39

I'm going to miss you. As a sister, Christine,

0:36:400:36:45

you've always been there for me

0:36:450:36:47

and I can't imagine any life without you around me.

0:36:470:36:51

Um, when I found out about you, um... (Sorry.) ..moving to Australia,

0:36:520:36:59

em...

0:36:590:37:01

I was really sad about it and, um,

0:37:010:37:05

I kind of pushed it to the back of my mind,

0:37:050:37:07

because, um, I didn't really want to think about it.

0:37:070:37:12

You are a big chunk of my life and I really, really miss you,

0:37:120:37:17

but, obviously, you've found, um, new beginnings there.

0:37:170:37:22

Eh, you're going to start a new life.

0:37:220:37:25

I'm all right with that,

0:37:250:37:27

but I will definitely miss you and hope the best.

0:37:270:37:31

Bye.

0:37:310:37:32

What are we feeling, darling boy?

0:37:450:37:47

I knew it would be sad, but I didn't think it would be this sad.

0:37:480:37:51

Go and cuddle Mummy.

0:37:530:37:55

- That would be really hard to move to Australia...

0:38:030:38:07

just because of, like, close bonds that we've formed with family.

0:38:070:38:11

-TIN TIN:

-Australia has its good bits, but after that video,

0:38:110:38:16

I'm starting to think a lot about the bad things, like being

0:38:160:38:21

so far away from our friends and family.

0:38:210:38:25

The reality of emigrating is always hard to face, but the messages

0:38:320:38:37

from home have deeply affected the entire family, especially Tin Tin.

0:38:370:38:43

So, will her children's reaction change Christine's belief

0:38:430:38:46

in a move down under or will she continue to pursue her dream?

0:38:460:38:50

I was in a state of turmoil last night

0:38:530:38:55

when we saw the friends and family video.

0:38:550:38:57

We hadn't anticipated the impact that that was going to have on us

0:38:570:39:01

as a family and it was horrendous.

0:39:010:39:04

The worst bit was Tin Tin who was absolutely distraught.

0:39:040:39:08

He was distraught beyond description.

0:39:080:39:11

I'm finding the final vote really hard cos I like Australia,

0:39:110:39:16

but I found out I really, really miss my family.

0:39:160:39:20

As a parent, that's really hard to see.

0:39:210:39:24

I started to question what we were doing, you know, um...

0:39:240:39:30

And what we'd be doing to him.

0:39:300:39:32

Munya also feels there's a lot to weigh up.

0:39:320:39:35

I'm still thinking, I'm still putting my thoughts together and I'm

0:39:350:39:38

trying to tie up my thoughts and my feelings together to get it right.

0:39:380:39:42

It's been a week of highs and lows for the Makuves.

0:39:430:39:46

-The family were blown away by Aussie houses.

-This is it, yeah!

0:39:460:39:50

This is it!

0:39:500:39:52

And positive news on the work front meant

0:39:520:39:54

they could afford the dream home.

0:39:540:39:57

So, you mean £45,000 on top of what we currently earn.

0:39:570:40:01

But the thought of leaving loved ones behind was

0:40:010:40:04

heartbreaking for the family.

0:40:040:40:06

As it draws to a close, has the trial week done anything to

0:40:090:40:12

sway Vanessa and PJ towards a life down under?

0:40:120:40:15

Before, I just didn't want to come here at all.

0:40:150:40:19

It's not that I want to come here now, it's just that...

0:40:190:40:22

I've found that it's a better place than I thought it would be.

0:40:220:40:25

- I didn't want to move here,

0:40:250:40:27

so I just decided that I wouldn't like it, but...

0:40:270:40:31

I did like it. I did enjoy it. It's actually really nice here.

0:40:310:40:35

So, as it comes to the final turn of the cards,

0:40:350:40:38

where does the family's future lie?

0:40:380:40:41

Based on everything we've done and learned in Australia,

0:40:410:40:45

our vote goes to...

0:40:450:40:46

-Australia.

-UK.

0:40:560:40:57

Right, so...

0:41:000:41:01

PJ, you voted, um...

0:41:010:41:03

-UK.

-So, that's one UK, three Australia...

0:41:030:41:06

and an undecided.

0:41:060:41:08

I just feel like bonds have been...

0:41:080:41:11

too strong in the UK, we've gotten too close to family

0:41:110:41:14

and friends and...

0:41:140:41:16

I just don't think I can move.

0:41:160:41:18

- It was just really hard for me to choose.

0:41:180:41:21

I think what this means for me is that, right now, I think I'm fine...

0:41:210:41:26

in the UK, but that means that I could possibly move to

0:41:260:41:29

-Australia if, like, the decision was made later.

-OK.

0:41:290:41:33

Considering that you didn't want to come at all, um,

0:41:330:41:36

that's actually quite a positive thing, isn't it, really?

0:41:360:41:39

And, Tin Tin, you've finally decided you like Australia?

0:41:390:41:42

- Um, like I said before, it has its ups and it has its downs and,

0:41:420:41:48

um, like PJ said, we do have bonds with, um, our family.

0:41:480:41:55

There's family in the UK, but it's also very cold,

0:41:550:42:00

so I've chosen Australia.

0:42:000:42:02

Very difficult to think about family,

0:42:020:42:05

to think about leaving an environment where you're stable,

0:42:050:42:08

um, but in the bigger picture,

0:42:080:42:11

considering what Christine wants, and just considering the potential

0:42:110:42:16

that's here in Australia in terms of the way of life, I think,

0:42:160:42:20

Australia, long-term, will be the way to go.

0:42:200:42:22

We're going to go home and we're going to have a powwow,

0:42:220:42:26

then Munya and I...

0:42:260:42:28

are going to be looking at trying to make the job opportunities

0:42:280:42:34

a bit more solid, cos we know now what to do and where the

0:42:340:42:38

opportunities are, so, we're going to be, hopefully, applying or at least

0:42:380:42:43

looking out for those opportunities and trying to see

0:42:430:42:45

whether we can make that move as soon as we can.

0:42:450:42:48

It's been an incredibly emotional week for the Makuves

0:42:530:42:57

and while Christine may not have achieved the clean sweep

0:42:570:43:01

she was hoping for, she has at least managed to win some of the

0:43:010:43:05

family round and while there's hope,

0:43:050:43:07

Christine has no intention of giving up on her Australian dream.
