Hello and welcome to DIY SOS, this week coming to you from Dudley in the West Midlands.

0:00:030:00:07

We're here to help a family trapped in a building site,

0:00:070:00:11

after trying desperately to make room for their three children.

0:00:110:00:14

By trying to make it better for the kiddies,

0:00:140:00:18

if anything, we've made it worse.

0:00:180:00:20

That's how I feel.

0:00:200:00:22

A family struggling to see a future while dealing with a serious genetic condition.

0:00:220:00:27

People say, "I don't know how you do it."

0:00:270:00:30

But if they're your own, you deal with it, don't you?

0:00:300:00:33

I love him to bits. I'd never change him.

0:00:330:00:35

But we can't do it alone.

0:00:350:00:37

With only ten days to do the job, we need a small army.

0:00:370:00:41

Is there anybody out there?

0:00:410:00:43

ALL: Yes!

0:00:430:00:45

-Getting this family back in that house is second to none, really.

-Come on then.

0:00:480:00:52

I'm Joanne's brother.

0:00:520:00:54

From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much.

0:00:540:00:57

APPLAUSE

0:00:570:00:59

This is DIY SOS - The Big Build.

0:00:590:01:03

This is Dudley and I have to be honest, I am surprised how pretty it is.

0:01:100:01:15

Here live dinner lady Joanne and factory butcher Wayne,

0:01:160:01:20

who desperately need our help to turn their small three-bedroom house into a home for their children.

0:01:200:01:26

22-year-old Katie, nine-year-old Ginny and Jack, who is seven.

0:01:260:01:31

-Dad, Mum.

-That's mummy's house, look, and Daddy's house.

0:01:310:01:35

In 2006, their lives were thrown into disarray

0:01:350:01:38

when all three children tested positive

0:01:380:01:41

for an inherited genetic condition called Fragile X Syndrome.

0:01:410:01:45

There's different levels of the complaint.

0:01:450:01:48

We've got the three levels of it.

0:01:480:01:51

Kate, that's a carrier. Ginny, that's mild,

0:01:510:01:55

and Jack, that's got the full.

0:01:550:01:58

We all worry. We all get anxious.

0:02:010:02:04

But there is like a brake in the brain to, you know, stop it.

0:02:040:02:07

Whereas with Jack, and with Ginny a little bit,

0:02:070:02:10

they can't seem to get that brake on as quick.

0:02:100:02:14

That's why Jack's emotions, it's just out of his control.

0:02:140:02:18

With symptoms similar to autism,

0:02:180:02:20

severe learning and behavioural difficulties are common.

0:02:200:02:23

Being away from familiar surroundings causes Jack massive anxiety,

0:02:230:02:27

so making their home a safe haven is a top priority.

0:02:270:02:31

Ginny will need help as she starts to mature into an adult.

0:02:320:02:36

Jack will need to be looked after for the rest of his life, always.

0:02:360:02:41

With Ginny's development already slowed,

0:02:410:02:45

being forced to share a bedroom is further holding her back.

0:02:450:02:48

Ginny, more or less, mimics children.

0:02:510:02:54

She finds it hard to communicate to other children her age.

0:02:540:02:58

That's why, because she's with Jack all the while,

0:02:580:03:02

she's only mimicking him.

0:03:020:03:04

So she looks far behind her years because of that.

0:03:040:03:09

So it would be nice for Ginny to perhaps, I know this sounds awful, but to escape a little bit.

0:03:110:03:16

16 months ago, they decided they had to do something,

0:03:160:03:20

so they invested everything they had into extending their house

0:03:200:03:24

with Wayne taking on the build himself.

0:03:240:03:27

We started out in 2010 and it was going to take six to eight weeks.

0:03:270:03:33

It's took a year just to get it like this.

0:03:330:03:37

-It took a lot more money than we thought.

-Yes.

0:03:370:03:40

And here we are now, in the rubbish.

0:03:420:03:46

They've lived in a building site for more than a year.

0:03:460:03:49

The disruption and noise making Jack and Ginny's anxieties worse.

0:03:490:03:53

Big sister Katie saw the strains increase.

0:03:530:03:57

Mum was at the end of her tether, ready to pull her hair out

0:03:580:04:01

and tears started and the stress started.

0:04:010:04:04

The tears started. I was like, "Mum, it's going to be all right."

0:04:040:04:08

And of course, it just got to the point

0:04:080:04:11

where we need help now to do it.

0:04:110:04:13

By trying to make it better for the kiddies,

0:04:130:04:16

it seems as if we've made it worse.

0:04:160:04:18

Jack doesn't really want to come home.

0:04:190:04:23

I feel...

0:04:230:04:25

I don't want to do it any more.

0:04:320:04:34

I can't do it any more.

0:04:340:04:37

If you could do this house, the kids would want to come home

0:04:370:04:43

and I would want to come home.

0:04:430:04:45

I don't ever want to come home lately.

0:04:450:04:48

And that's why we're here.

0:04:520:04:53

To help Wayne and Joanne turn their house into a safe and welcoming sanctuary.

0:04:530:04:58

I think for most people,

0:04:580:05:00

taking on an extension build would be stressful enough in itself.

0:05:000:05:03

-When the rest of the house is in the state it's in, it would make it doubly stressful.

-Yes.

0:05:030:05:08

And with the specific needs the kids have got,

0:05:080:05:11

it's a lot to be carrying around on your shoulders in one go.

0:05:110:05:14

-You feel you've failed.

-Especially when it's been going on for so long.

0:05:140:05:18

-You feel you've failed?

-Yes.

-We do.

-Failed who?

-The kiddies.

0:05:180:05:21

Yes.

0:05:210:05:23

-It hasn't quite gone according to plan.

-No.

0:05:240:05:26

You can see it's been a testing time for all five of them.

0:05:290:05:33

With so much going on, Katie's support and care

0:05:360:05:38

for her half brother and sister has been vital.

0:05:380:05:41

-Hello.

-Hello.

-What are we up to?

0:05:420:05:45

Drawing Megan, my cousin.

0:05:450:05:48

-It's my cousin as well.

-Is that what Megan looks like?

-No!

-Yes.

0:05:480:05:53

You know that we've come to try and change the house.

0:05:550:05:58

How would you like to house to be? What things do you need?

0:05:580:06:01

Just something nice where we can all relax and chill

0:06:010:06:04

and not be under one another's feet and Ginny can have her friends round.

0:06:040:06:08

And her to have a nice bedroom and Jack to have his own little space.

0:06:080:06:12

You know, just somewhere nice where we can have the family round on a Sunday and things like that.

0:06:120:06:17

It would just be nice.

0:06:170:06:19

If we manage to turn this into a home for you and the children, how does life change?

0:06:190:06:23

-It would be lovely.

-100%.

-It would be lovely to come back home.

0:06:250:06:30

Well, I tell you what, we'll do our best. We'll do our best.

0:06:310:06:34

Jack sometimes struggles with meeting new people but thankfully,

0:06:380:06:42

our motley crew aren't that scary.

0:06:420:06:45

Ugly, but not scary!

0:06:450:06:47

-Nice to meet you all.

-Hello.

-Hello, young man. How are you?

0:06:470:06:51

-We need to get going. We'll see you soon. See you later in the week. Is that all right?

-Bye bye.

0:06:530:06:57

Time to call up the troops and prepare for battle.

0:06:570:07:01

We've got 40 tradesman expected on site today alone.

0:07:010:07:04

So look, have a laugh...

0:07:040:07:07

Normally, I like to do the pep talk but on this one, I don't have to.

0:07:070:07:10

I'm Joanne's brother. From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much.

0:07:100:07:15

If anybody needs any help, me and our kid, this is Joanne's uncle,

0:07:150:07:19

if you need anything moving, just give us a shout and we'll muck in with you.

0:07:190:07:23

But once again, thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts.

0:07:230:07:27

APPLAUSE

0:07:270:07:29

Time for a short intro from build manager, Mark. Short! Get it?!

0:07:340:07:40

Today, what we're looking for is a really clean, empty, clear site,

0:07:400:07:44

so that tomorrow all the construction can start.

0:07:440:07:47

-Morning, Bill. All right?

-Yes. That wall's coming down there, is it?

-Yes.

0:07:500:07:54

-So I'll clear all the cooker and everything.

-Yes, please.

0:07:540:07:57

-Is he the only electrician we've got at the moment?

-Bill's the only electrician.

-That's terrifying!

0:07:570:08:02

-We had the electricians in before he got here, so he hasn't got anything to do.

-Oh, good. Thank God for that!

0:08:020:08:08

Billy might not have much to do, but everyone else does.

0:08:080:08:11

It's a bit like picking teams in the playground, this.

0:08:110:08:15

You and Matt are down here with Bill and Darren.

0:08:150:08:19

-The boys here. Who have we got?

-Another Darren.

-Another Darren.

0:08:190:08:22

-And those two...

-Carl.

0:08:220:08:24

This has all got confusing already.

0:08:240:08:26

Who are the four that are staying down here?

0:08:260:08:28

-Darren, Dean...

-Lee.

-And Darryl.

0:08:280:08:33

-Matt's over here with Jules.

-Matt's with Jules over here.

0:08:330:08:37

-Right, where am I?

-You're floating.

0:08:370:08:39

-We'll use you as a floater.

-I'm a floater?

-Yes!

0:08:390:08:41

-I'll be floating over here.

-OK. You float over there. Go and bob around!

0:08:410:08:45

Go on, floater!

0:08:450:08:48

I'm not sure I like that. Day one and I'm already getting stick.

0:08:480:08:53

How did you get to hear about this?

0:08:530:08:55

Why have you given up your time to come and help us?

0:08:550:08:58

A good friend of mine, it's his sister.

0:08:580:09:00

So it's all in a good cause. At the end of the day, it's nice to be nice.

0:09:000:09:04

Local community. You can't do enough for local communities.

0:09:040:09:06

We couldn't do it without you guys. We're like the little wheel that gets the big wheel going

0:09:060:09:11

and to get this family back in that house is second to none, really.

0:09:110:09:16

-Come on then. Let's start.

-We're nearly there, look.

0:09:160:09:19

You know, sometimes I wonder if we are best known

0:09:200:09:24

for our building skills or our love of cakes?

0:09:240:09:27

-You made them, did you?

-Yes.

-Thank you very much.

0:09:270:09:31

-What's your name?

-Kieran.

-Hello, Kieran. I'm Billy.

0:09:310:09:35

-They look very nice.

-Can I try one?

0:09:350:09:37

Which one shall I try? That one there? Ta, sweetheart.

0:09:370:09:42

They're lovely, Kieran.

0:09:440:09:46

I tell you what, you'll get another four hours work out of me now!

0:09:460:09:49

That will be four hours then! In total! We haven't even had one yet.

0:09:500:09:54

As usual, we get just nine days to finish the job. Why nine days?

0:09:550:09:58

Because some bloke in London thought it was a good idea.

0:09:580:10:01

Talk me through it, then. What's the plan? What are we doing with this place?

0:10:010:10:05

It might be a small house,

0:10:070:10:10

but designer Charlie Luxton has big plans.

0:10:100:10:12

I think that's the critical end and then work that way.

0:10:120:10:16

He's worked on several of these builds before and despite some testing moments...

0:10:160:10:20

-If you weren't on that thing, I'd thump you. You're pushing it.

-..he's come back for more.

0:10:200:10:24

-Generally, you're quite well respected when you turn up on shows, aren't you?

-I was!

0:10:240:10:29

He's a bit of a perfectionist,

0:10:290:10:32

but his determination has always produced impressive results.

0:10:320:10:35

And ladies, he's quite hunky too!

0:10:350:10:38

It's not a big house. It's going to be a lot bigger when the extension is added on.

0:10:380:10:42

They embarked on a project with a plan that didn't really work.

0:10:420:10:46

It's a small house, so I really tried to keep the circulation space as generous as possible.

0:10:460:10:52

I know a lot of people think, make the rooms as big as possible,

0:10:520:10:55

but you've got lots of tight rooms and very tight circulation space

0:10:550:10:59

so I think it makes the house very claustrophobic.

0:10:590:11:02

So just to give a little bit more generosity, little bit more space to the circulation,

0:11:020:11:06

I think it will make the house feel a lot bigger.

0:11:060:11:09

Charlie's plan is to knock through from the extension downstairs

0:11:090:11:13

to make a kitchen and dining area big enough for all five of them.

0:11:130:11:17

With Jack's condition, developments like potty training have been much slower,

0:11:170:11:21

so to help make things easier for them all, we're going to put in both a utility room and a downstairs loo.

0:11:210:11:27

Upstairs, Charlie plans to create a light and airy landing space with all the bedrooms feeding off it.

0:11:270:11:33

To do this, we're going to demolish the existing bathroom.

0:11:330:11:36

But as Jack loves running water,

0:11:360:11:38

we're not just going to replace like-for-like.

0:11:380:11:41

We are giving the family a main bathroom and an ensuite too.

0:11:410:11:45

With Wayne and Joanne in the master bedroom,

0:11:450:11:47

we'll move Katie out of the smallest room and put her into the big double room she deserves.

0:11:470:11:51

Last, but no means least, it's vital Jack and Jenny get a bedroom each.

0:11:510:11:56

But so they don't get too lonely,

0:11:560:11:58

we're keeping them right next door to each other.

0:11:580:12:00

Charlie's design will create the light, airy and spacious home

0:12:000:12:04

the family dreamt of and desperately needed

0:12:040:12:06

when they started the build more than a year ago.

0:12:060:12:09

And he's proving he's smart outside of the house too

0:12:100:12:12

with a little landscape designing.

0:12:120:12:15

Jack really likes playing in the garden. He loves water.

0:12:150:12:19

We might try and get a hand-operated pump.

0:12:190:12:22

The water and the pumping is a good thing for them to do because it gives them agency.

0:12:220:12:26

-It makes them feel like they're doing something.

-It gives them?

-Agency.

0:12:260:12:29

-Agency?

-Agency. It's a good word. I learnt that the other day.

0:12:290:12:32

I thought it made the guy sound really clever so I thought I'd try on you!

0:12:320:12:35

-You think I'm really clever now, don't you?

-It gives them agency.

-Yes.

0:12:350:12:40

I'm not quite sure I know what it means!

0:12:400:12:42

But I was impressed with it.

0:12:440:12:47

We're propping up the ceiling now.

0:12:490:12:52

We're going to take out all of this through here.

0:12:520:12:55

So big steel has to go in through here, so we have to support the ceiling on both sides.

0:12:550:12:59

There are plenty of people working on it, look.

0:12:590:13:02

So far so good. We'll have this wall out in no time now.

0:13:020:13:05

Let's knock her open.

0:13:050:13:07

Jules absolutely loves smashing down walls. The bigger the better. Sometimes, I wish we had two of him!

0:13:130:13:19

But upstairs, there's discord.

0:13:190:13:21

You can't just start stripping walls out in the house if it's the structural integrity of it.

0:13:210:13:26

-I get that.

-It's like ripping a heart out of a lamb.

0:13:260:13:29

You're going to take that out to put a wall up there to gain two foot.

0:13:320:13:36

It's not two foot. It's much more.

0:13:360:13:38

It comes back to here. So this all becomes open landing.

0:13:380:13:42

But surely, it's living space you're trying to give them,

0:13:420:13:45

not area at the top of the stairs. We're only here for nine days.

0:13:450:13:48

But they're here for a lifetime.

0:13:480:13:51

I appreciate that and they'll be absolutely overwhelmed when they come back.

0:13:510:13:55

I think even more so if this wall is gone.

0:13:550:13:58

I don't think they will notice it.

0:13:580:14:01

That's why we have designers to design and builders to build.

0:14:030:14:07

I wonder where that leaves me?

0:14:070:14:09

Probably with the full support of the team.

0:14:090:14:11

-What's the craic with that kitchen utility room?

-It's going very well.

0:14:110:14:15

Knowlesy's tried to sow the seed of doubt,

0:14:150:14:18

but don't worry about any of that.

0:14:180:14:20

-Why?

-He thinks it's all going to fall down, doesn't he?

0:14:200:14:23

-He's a presenter. He's a TV presenter.

-Exactly.

-What does he know about it?

0:14:230:14:28

Are you not worried that wall is going to fall down?

0:14:280:14:31

-It's absolutely fine.

-I'm worried about my boys.

0:14:310:14:34

I don't want it all coming down on your head. I want to look after you.

0:14:340:14:37

-I imagine you knew that. He was being nice about me asking, wasn't he?

-Obviously, yes.

0:14:370:14:41

-Charlie was looking for you.

-He's out the back. I'll go and find him.

0:14:410:14:45

-Yes, you float that way.

-Go on, floater!

0:14:450:14:47

# Today I don't feel like doing anything. #

0:14:470:14:49

If I'm not needed here, I might just sneak off to attend to some important business.

0:14:490:14:55

Maybe I should have told them where I was going.

0:14:550:14:58

# I'm gonna kick my feet up... #

0:14:580:14:59

-You haven't seen Nick, have you? Knowlesy.

-No.

0:14:590:15:02

-I'll look for him downstairs.

-If you see him, I'm looking for him.

0:15:020:15:08

# Leave a message at the tone

0:15:080:15:11

# Today I swear I'm not doing anything

0:15:110:15:15

# Nothing at all

0:15:150:15:17

# Oooh, oooh, oooh. #

0:15:170:15:19

What a fantastic day one. The boys are going great guns out there.

0:15:190:15:23

Sparks is still bashing away in here. We've got the opening in the kitchen. Padstones are in. They're all drying.

0:15:230:15:28

The steel is going in first thing in the morning.

0:15:280:15:31

Shall we have a look upstairs? Chris has been knocking walls out up there and everything has been going on.

0:15:310:15:36

The new stud work's gone in place. That's going to be our ensuite.

0:15:360:15:39

This is going to be our main family bathroom in here, which is great.

0:15:390:15:44

In here the boys are creating the new bedrooms.

0:15:440:15:47

You're probably wondering why I'm doing this, because Nick normally does it.

0:15:470:15:51

But we don't know where he is.

0:15:510:15:53

You're auditioning for my job, that's what you're doing! Stop it!

0:15:530:15:56

It's a beautiful morning in Dudley and as they say,

0:15:580:16:02

an army marches on its stomach.

0:16:020:16:05

-Where have you been?

-Me?

0:16:050:16:07

I was out doing some research around Dudley last night.

0:16:070:16:11

No, no, no. From yesterday probably lunchtime you were missing.

0:16:110:16:15

I like to do proper research. I don't just... I take it seriously.

0:16:150:16:19

I went out and had a look around the town.

0:16:190:16:22

So that's not you outside Number Ten Downing Street?

0:16:220:16:26

Where did you get that?

0:16:260:16:28

-You know them social networking sites?

-Yes.

-It's all over it.

0:16:280:16:32

-So that's not you outside 10 Downing Street?

-I tell you what it was. I didn't want to mention anything.

0:16:320:16:37

You know the Children In Need Big Build in Liverpool?

0:16:370:16:40

Yes, I've still got the scar.

0:16:400:16:42

Well, they rang me up and said we'd like to honour you all

0:16:420:16:45

and bring you to Number Ten Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister

0:16:450:16:48

and his wife to say thank you for all your hard work.

0:16:480:16:51

-That was nice of them. All of us?

-We're on a job, so...

0:16:510:16:54

I said, "We can't all go." So they said, "Well, can you just make it?" So I went, "Yes, all right."

0:16:540:16:58

So we're here grafting and you're up there on our behalf accepting thank you

0:16:580:17:03

for all the hard work we done for Children In Need in Liverpool?

0:17:030:17:07

I was very generous in my speech.

0:17:070:17:08

I tell you what, I've known you a lot of years. That's naughty.

0:17:080:17:12

-That's generous of me.

-Naughty.

0:17:120:17:13

You wouldn't have wanted to go to Number Ten, would you, Bill?

0:17:130:17:16

I've been there and done that with Maggie Thatcher when she was in charge.

0:17:160:17:20

But I think it's a great compliment, going to Number Ten.

0:17:200:17:24

See, he appreciates me going to Number Ten on your behalf.

0:17:240:17:27

You just made it sound like it's a compliment that he's gone

0:17:270:17:31

to accept the award on our behalf.

0:17:310:17:33

One of us had to go and the only one that doesn't do any work is Nick.

0:17:330:17:37

-That's not what I meant.

-He has got a... No, fair play, Bill.

0:17:370:17:40

No, hang on.

0:17:420:17:44

Charlie's design is a work of art, worthy of an old master.

0:17:450:17:49

But to turn it into a reality, we've got to put in some serious hard graft first.

0:17:490:17:54

Thankfully, some genius has come up with a useful invention to do the tricky bit for us.

0:17:560:18:01

Modern technology. Health and safety. Genie lift.

0:18:010:18:05

You get that lift in and the lift winds the steel up to our desired height

0:18:050:18:11

and we wheel it back and plonk it in place.

0:18:110:18:15

Brilliant! It takes the weight off your back. Probably ought to measure the gap first though.

0:18:150:18:19

Have we got enough room?

0:18:190:18:21

Time to bring in the muscle. Or Charlie.

0:18:210:18:24

Is that the best chisel we've got?

0:18:330:18:35

Come on!

0:18:350:18:37

Come on!

0:18:390:18:42

-Mr da Vinci, would you like a cup of tea?

-I would love a tea, mate.

0:18:430:18:46

Cup of tea for Leonardo da Vinci, please!

0:18:460:18:49

That's fine. Right.

0:18:540:18:56

The beam is in, as you can see. So that's great now.

0:18:590:19:02

We can start dropping the load on to it.

0:19:020:19:05

It will now hold the middle of the house up, which is very exciting,

0:19:050:19:09

because you need the middle of the house held up.

0:19:090:19:12

Otherwise it would fall down, wouldn't it?

0:19:120:19:15

We've only been here for one day,

0:19:170:19:19

but already the house looks like it's gone 12 rounds with Muhammad Ali.

0:19:190:19:23

It would have taken Wayne years to get to this point.

0:19:230:19:25

What's the most difficult thing

0:19:270:19:29

about being in the situation you're in with the difficulties that the children have?

0:19:290:19:33

Normal day things like just going to the shop.

0:19:330:19:36

It would probably need two of you to take him.

0:19:370:19:39

If he doesn't want to go anywhere, he won't go.

0:19:390:19:43

Stuff like that.

0:19:430:19:45

I have to literally put him over my shoulder

0:19:450:19:48

to get him back in the house and stuff like that.

0:19:480:19:51

People say, "I don't know how you do it."

0:19:510:19:53

But everybody that has kids, if they're your own,

0:19:530:19:58

you deal with it, don't you?

0:19:580:20:00

So you can't do those normal things that you expect to do with your son?

0:20:000:20:05

Definitely. I go to the football and watch the football

0:20:050:20:08

and my mates have got their kids there.

0:20:080:20:11

I don't ever show it, but...

0:20:120:20:14

..it's hard, knowing that I'll never be able to take my son.

0:20:160:20:21

So how do you not fold up?

0:20:210:20:23

How do you manage the stress, because there's a lot of it?

0:20:230:20:27

You've never seen such a loving kid with me and Joanne as him.

0:20:270:20:34

You've seen what is normal, but normal kids,

0:20:340:20:38

I've never seen them as loving as he can be.

0:20:380:20:42

So for all the difficulties that you face every day,

0:20:420:20:45

you get more back than you might do...

0:20:450:20:48

I love him to bits. I'd never change him.

0:20:500:20:52

I'd like another kid exactly the same as him

0:20:520:20:56

to do the normal things, but I wouldn't change Jack.

0:20:560:20:58

I love him to bits.

0:20:580:21:00

With the house finished, Wayne will be able to start

0:21:030:21:07

reclaiming his life, spending more time with the whole family

0:21:070:21:10

and banishing the ghosts of a project he just couldn't finish alone.

0:21:100:21:14

Back on site, things aren't exactly harmonious.

0:21:160:21:19

Builders and designers don't always play well together.

0:21:190:21:24

It should have been done yesterday and he missed the boat.

0:21:240:21:27

It's like turning up to a ferry port and there's the ferry 100 yards out, going, you've missed it.

0:21:270:21:31

So get over it.

0:21:310:21:33

He's asking the ferry to turn round and come back to pick him up.

0:21:330:21:36

And we're the captain of the ship saying, "No, we're not going to do it."

0:21:360:21:40

That's exactly it. It's too late.

0:21:400:21:41

We are going to go backwards in a minute. We can't afford to.

0:21:410:21:45

I don't know. They were pretty unhappy about it.

0:21:450:21:47

It has been discussed from the very first moment of the build

0:21:470:21:51

and to be honest, it is about trying to make the spaces feel as one

0:21:510:21:55

and not feel like an extension has been bolted on to the site.

0:21:550:21:58

Also, if it's taller, it won't feel as tight.

0:21:580:22:00

We made that tight in there to make the bedroom as big as possible.

0:22:000:22:04

When it's done, they're going to be like, it was the right decision. But they're still in a mood about it!

0:22:040:22:10

-He can fit under it perfectly well.

-He's fine.

0:22:100:22:13

-I can fit under it perfectly well.

-Just.

0:22:140:22:17

You can go under it perfectly well, so you are fine too. So what's the problem?

0:22:170:22:23

-It's very low.

-We're just about to start boarding the ceiling.

0:22:230:22:27

If we do that, then this isn't going to be done until some time tomorrow.

0:22:270:22:31

So it has a knock-on effect. That's what I'm trying to say.

0:22:310:22:35

-How many hours' work are we talking about?

-Three hours' work.

0:22:350:22:38

-Have we got two blokes?

-As long as they don't get in anybody's way

0:22:380:22:41

and it doesn't hold anybody else up.

0:22:410:22:43

But if we can't get someone to do it quickly...

0:22:430:22:47

-I accept that.

-Yes?

-Yes.

0:22:470:22:49

'Sometimes I feel like a UN peacekeeper in this job.'

0:22:490:22:53

Do you think it would be possible to get the head out above the door

0:22:530:22:56

in three hours tonight and have it finished, lintels in.

0:22:560:23:00

-Is it possible to do with?

-Yes.

-Can you do it?

-Yes.

-Thank you.

0:23:000:23:03

Charlie will help you. He will carry for you.

0:23:030:23:08

I've been trying to get people to do it...

0:23:080:23:10

-I've offered to do it all afternoon.

-Right, shut this. That's it.

0:23:100:23:14

-Cheers, Chris.

-You wanted it done, Charlie. No slacking.

0:23:160:23:19

-Many hands make light work.

-Sir.

0:23:190:23:22

One of the young Jack's big difficulties is learning to use the toilet.

0:23:260:23:29

Having one downstairs will make a huge difference,

0:23:290:23:32

but we're having to lower the floor to get the plumbing in.

0:23:320:23:36

Nice job. I like this sort of work. Proper work this, digging.

0:23:360:23:40

I was reared on this sort of work. What my dad used to do.

0:23:400:23:44

He taught me everything I know, my dad. Everything.

0:23:440:23:47

Didn't do nothing at school. No qualifications.

0:23:470:23:50

Didn't take any exams. I'm not an academic at all.

0:23:500:23:54

I left school and he's building a house.

0:23:540:23:56

My dad said, "Come and work with me for two weeks."

0:23:560:24:00

That was in 1986. Still here.

0:24:000:24:03

So I didn't really choose this vocation. It chose me.

0:24:030:24:08

Who was that mucky git?

0:24:080:24:10

You can guess, if you like.

0:24:100:24:13

It turns out a university education and good manners don't necessarily go hand-in-hand!

0:24:130:24:17

One, two, three.

0:24:170:24:20

It's nice to see the intellectual on the team getting a few honest blisters.

0:24:200:24:24

They're not going to do it again for 50 years, so we may as well get it right.

0:24:240:24:27

Because we're putting the kids over there,

0:24:270:24:30

we want it to feel like it's part of the main house

0:24:300:24:32

so I think it is important.

0:24:320:24:34

-It's not been that hard, has it?

-No.

0:24:340:24:36

No, not really. It's just Mark making a big song and dance out of it.

0:24:360:24:40

I'm glad I came up with that idea. I'll have a tea, please.

0:24:400:24:45

# Stand up, hands up Don't sit down. #

0:24:450:24:48

-What are your names?

-My name is Del.

-Del. And?

-My name is Kel.

0:24:480:24:51

-So you're putting all the plumbing in for us?

-We have, yes.

0:24:510:24:54

That's very kind of you.

0:24:540:24:56

We live locally ourselves and once we heard about it,

0:24:560:24:59

it was a no-brainer really, to get involved.

0:24:590:25:02

-How are you finding the site so far?

-A bit chaotic, but otherwise OK.

0:25:020:25:06

Considering how many people there are in a square foot,

0:25:060:25:09

nobody has really got in anybody else's way.

0:25:090:25:12

It's quite something, isn't it? And also, nobody has lost their temper.

0:25:120:25:15

Not yet! It's only a couple of days in!

0:25:150:25:18

With the mood so good and so many problems appearing to be resolved,

0:25:180:25:23

I felt it was time I could slip away.

0:25:230:25:26

Katie is more than just a big sister to Ginny and Jack.

0:25:260:25:28

She's a carer too, giving her mum and Wayne vital support.

0:25:280:25:32

But that means trips out with friends like this one have been few and far between.

0:25:320:25:37

She knows better than anyone the strains the build has put on the family.

0:25:380:25:43

It's something really which hasn't just affected one,

0:25:430:25:47

it has put a lot of stress and strain on the pair of them.

0:25:470:25:50

You can tell it has. You can really tell it's got them down.

0:25:500:25:54

My mum is not the same person any more. You know, she's not.

0:25:540:25:58

So you think if we get the house working properly, your mum,

0:25:580:26:02

-like you know her...

-Will come back again.

0:26:020:26:05

-Do you think?

-Yes. I think so. I definitely think so.

0:26:050:26:08

So if you could wave a magic wand and the house is done,

0:26:080:26:11

what would the house be like?

0:26:110:26:13

I think it would just be magic,

0:26:130:26:15

because things will just be wonderful.

0:26:150:26:17

You know, for Mum and Wayne to have that homely feeling.

0:26:170:26:23

Not to walk through that door and see cables hanging

0:26:230:26:26

and plaster off the walls.

0:26:260:26:28

It would be out of this world. It would just be magic.

0:26:280:26:31

-You must be pretty excited about when we finish, then?

-I am, yes.

0:26:310:26:35

-Do you think your mum will cry?

-Yes.

0:26:350:26:37

-Do you think Wayne will cry?

-Yes.

-Do you think so?

-Yes. We all will.

0:26:370:26:40

-He's never going to live that down at work, is he?

-No.

0:26:400:26:43

-If he turns up back at work having had a cry on telly.

-Yes.

0:26:430:26:47

No, it will be lovely.

0:26:470:26:48

Move your sofa, there's a car coming.

0:26:570:26:59

Move your sofa back. That's it. Over there. Sit down.

0:27:010:27:05

# There was a cold wind blowing

0:27:050:27:07

# From the north and to the south. #

0:27:070:27:10

With no central heating, the family must have dreaded cold winter mornings like this one.

0:27:100:27:15

They're not the only ones.

0:27:150:27:17

It starts frosting tonight and it really gets cold Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday.

0:27:170:27:23

Friday looks OK because it's up to six degrees.

0:27:230:27:27

-It doesn't get warm enough. It's not going to defrost the ground.

-No.

0:27:270:27:30

So ideally, we could do with getting the boxes in and the plants in by tomorrow afternoon.

0:27:300:27:36

You're effectively saying, we have to finish the garden in two days.

0:27:360:27:39

If that weather stays the same as it is.

0:27:390:27:42

It's getting the turf down in two days that's the issue.

0:27:420:27:45

We can possibly do a few other things around it.

0:27:450:27:48

We've had no luck. I have to go and find out where we are with the plants.

0:27:480:27:51

-We need some trees and we need some plants. Otherwise, it's not going to look any good.

-No.

0:27:510:27:56

Get on with it, then! With the pressure on, Charlie's plans for the water feature have changed too.

0:27:560:28:01

Gone is the hand pump, in is a rubbish looking bucket, really.

0:28:010:28:05

So what I'm thinking is that this is a raised box.

0:28:060:28:09

It's about 350 high, which takes you just over the top of that.

0:28:090:28:12

Then we'll put pebbles in the bottom of it

0:28:120:28:15

and a little pump and they can fill it from the outdoor tap

0:28:150:28:18

and I think we might paint it, like a really bright colour.

0:28:180:28:22

-It'll be lovely.

-Like a yellow or red, or something.

0:28:220:28:25

-It's just so he can sit and play in it.

-Let's go and do it then.

0:28:250:28:28

-Camembert, are you happy with that?

-I'm happy with that.

-Lovely.

0:28:280:28:31

It's a bucket! It's going to look like a bucket!

0:28:310:28:34

What we're trying to give Jack is some outside space that's safe and familiar

0:28:340:28:38

and where Wayne and Joanne can keep an eye on him easily.

0:28:380:28:40

His condition means he needs constant round-the-clock care.

0:28:400:28:44

Joanne's only time off comes when Jack is at a local special needs school.

0:28:440:28:49

Your uncle and brother have been at the house

0:28:490:28:52

-and they've been saying that you feel you don't deserve this.

-Yes. It's weird.

0:28:520:28:56

-Why?

-I don't know.

0:28:560:28:58

We started the work and thought we were going to finish it

0:28:580:29:03

and you just feel awful that you haven't been able to finish it.

0:29:030:29:06

If it hadn't have been for you lot, I don't know what I'd have done.

0:29:060:29:10

It's hard enough, I don't like that word "normal", because everybody is different,

0:29:100:29:14

but it's hard enough with children.

0:29:140:29:16

But when your child has sensory problems and things like that,

0:29:160:29:20

even if somebody had to use a drill or if Wayne had to drill, you've always got to take him out.

0:29:200:29:25

Half way down the road, someone could just disturb Jack

0:29:250:29:29

so his anxiety levels and stress levels are always peaking.

0:29:290:29:34

It takes him a long while to settle.

0:29:340:29:37

-Have you been dreaming about the house being fixed up? Can you imagine what we've done to it?

-No.

0:29:370:29:43

It will just be nice to not walk in...

0:29:430:29:45

When I used to walk in the house,

0:29:450:29:48

I used to just feel that low all of a sudden.

0:29:480:29:51

Perhaps I'd had a bit of a rough day or a morning with Jack,

0:29:510:29:54

getting him to school, and then coming back.

0:29:540:29:58

Nine times out of ten, Jack didn't want to come back in the house because it was just... Just a mess.

0:29:580:30:04

You keep saying, "It'll be done soon, Jack. It will be done soon, Jack."

0:30:050:30:09

But you know deep down in your heart of hearts

0:30:090:30:12

it's going to take a hell of a long time to get it straight.

0:30:120:30:15

-Maybe Jack will be calmer if he has his own space.

-I think so.

0:30:150:30:19

And it will be somewhere for him to retreat to

0:30:190:30:21

if he wants a bit of time out himself.

0:30:210:30:24

So how does life change?

0:30:240:30:26

It'll be so much easier. The pressure would be off.

0:30:260:30:29

I can't believe it, Nick, honestly.

0:30:290:30:31

You're sitting here next to me now and I still can't believe it!

0:30:310:30:34

-You'll have to believe it when you walk in. I think it's going to be quite emotional.

-Yes.

0:30:340:30:38

But I will just be glad to be settled and back home,

0:30:380:30:41

with everything back to normal.

0:30:410:30:43

As normal as they can be.

0:30:460:30:48

Nearer normal.

0:30:490:30:50

It's a dream.

0:30:520:30:53

We can't make all the other difficulties that you face any better,

0:30:560:31:00

but we can certainly give you a better environment in which to face them.

0:31:000:31:04

That would be lovely.

0:31:040:31:06

Back on site, things are going at a million miles an hour.

0:31:130:31:18

But there's always time for little good grace.

0:31:180:31:20

Can I just, on behalf of myself, commend you on this decision

0:31:220:31:25

to higher this up because I was totally disagreeing with everyone yesterday quietly

0:31:250:31:30

and I think it has just finished this whole open space off.

0:31:300:31:35

Raising it up by 350 mil might not sound like a lot.

0:31:350:31:39

That much, Charlie's pushed it up.

0:31:390:31:42

It's a wonderful thing.

0:31:430:31:46

-Thank you. I commend you on behalf of me.

-Thank you very much, mate.

0:31:460:31:50

That's brilliant.

0:31:500:31:51

That's unbelievable!

0:31:510:31:53

I think that's the first time I've ever seen Chris admit he was wrong.

0:31:530:31:58

-This is your design, isn't it? This front garden.

-Yes.

0:31:590:32:02

-You've got a load of tarmac up here.

-Loads of it. Loads of tarmac.

0:32:020:32:07

Tarmac and gravel and concrete kerbstones.

0:32:070:32:10

If I had my way, up the driveway, I'm going to put double yellow lines up there.

0:32:100:32:15

-Have double yellow lines up the driveway.

-Cats eyes!

-Cats eyes!

0:32:160:32:21

-Cats eyes up the middle.

-There's going to be no messing around.

0:32:210:32:25

There's going to be nothing organic, flowery or fruity about it.

0:32:250:32:28

They can park their car and let the rain run off.

0:32:280:32:30

Can I just mention, in amongst your garden talk,

0:32:300:32:33

there's a building needs doing.

0:32:330:32:35

Remember? It's the big thing in between the front and the back garden

0:32:350:32:38

that you were arguing about.

0:32:380:32:41

You wouldn't catch our plasterers messing about with plants and raised flowerbeds.

0:32:410:32:45

No. These are men on a mission.

0:32:450:32:47

Absolutely immense push, lads. This is phenomenal.

0:32:470:32:50

It can all be drying out, we can get the kitchen in, we can get the floors down.

0:32:500:32:54

Happy days. Brilliant. Thank you, guys.

0:32:540:32:56

-Thanks for having us.

-But you have left little bit around the corner!

0:32:560:33:01

# I don't care about the soaps No, I don't care about the soaps

0:33:030:33:07

# Though I must feel like I'm in an Eastenders episode. #

0:33:080:33:12

To the untrained eye, it would look like we haven't done a great deal in here.

0:33:120:33:16

But this is all prepped ready for plastering tomorrow and that will mean in just three days,

0:33:160:33:21

the whole of the upstairs will be plastered.

0:33:210:33:24

Downstairs is flying along as well.

0:33:240:33:26

Another thing, and don't tell Charlie I said this, but he's right.

0:33:260:33:29

This does look like a very big landing, which means it feels like a big house, even if it isn't.

0:33:290:33:34

Very nice.

0:33:340:33:36

The ground is so hard it won't defrost, so we're going to have to defrost it with a big burner.

0:33:390:33:44

If the ground is like that, what about the poor old plants?

0:33:440:33:48

Permafrost has just set in.

0:33:520:33:54

We've got at least three inches on the top which is absolutely rock solid.

0:33:540:33:58

Feel free to try it with the pick.

0:33:580:34:01

That is ridiculous!

0:34:070:34:09

It's difficult to show you on screen just how cold it is, but it's freezing.

0:34:090:34:14

The grass won't take root on frozen soil so the flamethrower

0:34:140:34:17

is our only hope if we're going to get this garden done in time.

0:34:170:34:21

If Mark's feeling inadequate, he's certainly not showing it.

0:34:210:34:25

This is what you call gardening. I'm telling you.

0:34:250:34:27

None of this poncing around with snippers and stuff.

0:34:270:34:30

Get one of these in your garden.

0:34:300:34:32

The boys have got the clear all this back today for the path.

0:34:320:34:35

What we're trying to do is make a practical space in the front of the house

0:34:350:34:38

so they can move Jack around and get him in and out of the house without hurting himself.

0:34:380:34:43

Really, that's what it's about.

0:34:430:34:45

They've all been laughing at me because I wanted this all Tarmaced

0:34:460:34:50

but I tell you what, as far as I'm concerned, it's a work of art.

0:34:500:34:53

-Definitely.

-It's a work of art.

-That's why they've sent us.

-Exactly.

0:34:530:34:57

The A-Team!

0:34:570:34:59

I think Mark might be getting into this design thing.

0:34:590:35:02

Three, two...

0:35:020:35:05

Will it fit? Will it fit?

0:35:050:35:09

Hooray! Look at that there! Don't you dare walk on that.

0:35:090:35:13

If you're coming out here, clean your feet.

0:35:130:35:16

You know when they paved paradise to put up a parking lot, it was Mark that won the contract!

0:35:160:35:21

What's the difference between a buffalo and a bison?

0:35:210:35:25

You can wash your hands in a bison!

0:35:260:35:28

Yes, jokes and building. All you have to do is feed him.

0:35:280:35:31

Keep your hands and feet away from his mouth when he's eating and you'll be perfectly safe.

0:35:310:35:36

-Oh look, there's a kitchen going in.

-What have you got for us, Pete?

-Nice cream kitchen. Nice and light.

0:35:360:35:41

-It's going to bring a lot of light. It's a proper cook's kitchen.

-The clock is ticking.

0:35:410:35:46

-Thank you very much.

-See you later.

-All right. Nice one.

0:35:460:35:49

What do you think? It's beautiful isn't it?

0:35:560:35:59

-He's overdone the tarmac a bit.

-What?

-You've overdone the tarmac a bit.

0:35:590:36:02

I'd ignore him saying that you've overdone it.

0:36:020:36:05

I think what you've done is provide a very reasonable environment for them to put their cars.

0:36:050:36:10

-From a disabled point of view...

-What's that?

0:36:100:36:13

-What is it?

-Insulation.

-That's our insulation?

0:36:130:36:18

-What have you got on board?

-Insulation.

-Insulation? For here?

0:36:180:36:22

-The whole lorryload?

-The whole lorryload.

0:36:220:36:25

-Who's overdone it then?

-So let me just check.

0:36:250:36:28

You think he might have overdone the tarmac a little bit?!

0:36:280:36:32

And that is the amount of insulation you've ordered for the house?!

0:36:340:36:37

Luckily for you, I'm currently thinking about insulating my house at home!

0:36:370:36:41

I might be able to help you out here.

0:36:410:36:44

Now you mention it, I might do my house as well while I'm at it!

0:36:440:36:48

You can't be serious. How many bales have you got on there?

0:36:480:36:52

Oh, my God!

0:36:520:36:54

-I know!

-There's more on that side.

-Yes.

0:36:560:36:58

On the upside, at least it's only come from Stourbridge up the road.

0:36:580:37:03

Poland.

0:37:030:37:04

I think our eco-warrior needs to check his maths.

0:37:080:37:12

Its 2.6 metres by five metres

0:37:120:37:15

so we need 40 square metres, minus the six square metres.

0:37:150:37:18

34 metres of the hemp stuff, which is 11 bales.

0:37:180:37:22

That is 6.5 by three, which is 19.5, times two, which is 39.

0:37:220:37:28

Divided by a half, which is about 80.

0:37:280:37:31

Plus the 12, which is 92.

0:37:310:37:34

So that's about four of the big bales and 11 bales of the hemp.

0:37:340:37:40

If you'd like to take part in "Dodgy Maths Weekly",

0:37:400:37:42

write in to the BBC and you can take part in next week's challenge.

0:37:420:37:47

I know it seems insane, but it isn't. Can we get it off?

0:37:470:37:52

'It is insane! It's insane! By anybody's standards, it's insane!'

0:37:520:37:57

With tonnes of insulation lining the loft, a brand spanking new boiler and ten powerful radiators,

0:37:590:38:04

this house is going to be seriously toasty.

0:38:040:38:08

-Shall we have a quick tea break?

-But not quite yet.

0:38:080:38:11

We're emptying the site so that the boys can fill the central heating system up and listen for leaks.

0:38:110:38:16

(You see, there's more than 300 metres of piping

0:38:180:38:22

(running through this place and it only takes one leak to sink the whole ship.)

0:38:220:38:26

Hold on, that doesn't look right.

0:38:290:38:32

You can see a mark on the ceiling below so we've got a rough idea,

0:38:320:38:35

because only a few of us have done the plumbing,

0:38:350:38:38

so we know where we put all our pipework.

0:38:380:38:40

There's only a certain amount of pipework that could be leaking.

0:38:400:38:44

It's under the floor somewhere.

0:38:440:38:46

All the floors are laid and all the carpets are laid down.

0:38:460:38:49

I sniff disaster!

0:38:490:38:51

Unfortunately, a dramatic problem calls for a dramatic solution.

0:38:540:38:58

In a way, plumbing, if you've got a leak, you can see it.

0:38:580:39:01

But electrics, if it's not running there, you don't know where it's broken.

0:39:010:39:05

True, Billy, but normally when there's an issue with the electrics,

0:39:050:39:08

we just work backwards from where you last were!

0:39:080:39:12

It's best to pressurise the system, find out exactly where it's coming from

0:39:120:39:16

and then drain the system quickly.

0:39:160:39:19

-No-one's used the toilet, have they?

-Oh, Christopher!

0:39:190:39:22

We've got two teams of plumbers working on this and neither of them

0:39:220:39:26

will want to be responsible for it, will they?

0:39:260:39:29

-No.

-Your honour, as a plumber is that your joints are right.

0:39:290:39:32

-Without a doubt.

-So what is it?

-Can you see anything?

0:39:320:39:35

-What is it?

-A nail through the pipe.

0:39:360:39:40

Skirting board nail through the pipe!

0:39:400:39:42

-So it was nothing to do with the plumbers then?

-No.

0:39:420:39:45

-The plumbers' honour is intact.

-See how happy he is about that?

0:39:450:39:48

Not now, cos we've got to fix it.

0:39:480:39:51

We've been doing these DIY SOS Big Builds for two years now

0:39:570:40:00

and it never fails to amaze me how these things come together.

0:40:000:40:03

But it's a fairly straightforward formula.

0:40:030:40:05

Essentially, what you need is an ocean of goodwill

0:40:050:40:08

and people who are prepared to work themselves to a standstill

0:40:080:40:11

for ten days for no financial reward.

0:40:110:40:13

Just for knowing that they've done something good for people who really deserve it.

0:40:130:40:17

We will finish this over the next 24 hours, because we've got amazing people working on it.

0:40:170:40:22

I never thought I'd say this, but hooray, it's raining!

0:40:320:40:36

No, I'm not mad. It means the ground has finally started to thaw out

0:40:360:40:40

and we can mix in some fresh topsoil.

0:40:400:40:42

So how is it going to go? Have we got enough time left because this is the last run-in?

0:40:420:40:47

-Have we got time to tidy this garden?

-We've got a great plan. I reckon we're looking good.

0:40:470:40:51

We should be hitting the turf about 2.00pm or 3.00pm,

0:40:510:40:54

so we'll have the last couple of hours of daylight to put that down

0:40:540:40:58

-and get it all flat.

-All right. I'll leave you to it.

0:40:580:41:01

Out front, Mark's driveway is a vision in black.

0:41:100:41:14

-You must be very proud.

-Proud? It's like I've had twins!

0:41:140:41:18

That's the level of pride.

0:41:180:41:20

They're a good looking bunch as well, aren't they?

0:41:200:41:23

-They are.

-Have you ever thought of doing a calendar, you guys?

0:41:230:41:26

We tried a DIY SOS calendar once.

0:41:290:41:32

Let's just say they weren't exactly bestsellers.

0:41:320:41:36

It's a work of art.

0:41:360:41:37

Our Black Country builders have been nothing less than immense.

0:41:390:41:43

Now it's just the spit, polish and finishing touches to go.

0:41:430:41:47

-It's going to look good, isn't it?

-It's going to look great.

0:41:470:41:50

-It's quite a change around.

-I can't wait to see it on the reveal.

0:41:500:41:53

I can't believe the difference from the first day,

0:41:530:41:56

when you came in and saw the state that everything was in.

0:41:560:41:59

You turned up two days before you put the carpets down to take measurements

0:41:590:42:03

-and I could see you thinking...

-This isn't going to be ready. It's amazing.

0:42:030:42:06

It's amazing how they've managed to do it in the time.

0:42:060:42:09

And incredibly, (DUDLEY ACCENT) done it in time we have.

0:42:090:42:13

Just nine days ago, we arrived

0:42:200:42:22

to find a family, not only battling Fragile X syndrome, but living

0:42:220:42:26

in a dark, cold and cramped building site.

0:42:260:42:29

With no money left, and no way out,

0:42:290:42:31

Wayne and Joanne were exhausted and desperate for help.

0:42:310:42:35

By trying to make it better for the kiddies, it seems as if we've made it worse.

0:42:350:42:40

Jack...he doesn't really want to come home.

0:42:400:42:44

It's probably my fault as well, because I couldn't finish it myself.

0:42:440:42:48

And, I wish I could.

0:42:490:42:52

When we asked the question,

0:42:540:42:55

an army of local trades put their hands up,

0:42:550:42:58

donating over 4,000 man-hours

0:42:580:43:00

to give the family a home they'd want to come back to.

0:43:000:43:04

Together, we've demolished the old dark and cluttered kitchen.

0:43:100:43:15

Knocking through into the extension,

0:43:150:43:16

to create a huge open-plan living space.

0:43:160:43:20

The large family dining area

0:43:210:43:23

leads into an open and light, modern kitchen,

0:43:230:43:26

complete with the appliances

0:43:260:43:28

and surface areas they were so lacking.

0:43:280:43:30

The slate-floored utility room

0:43:330:43:35

is equipped with plenty of storage space

0:43:350:43:37

and a downstairs toilet will come in useful

0:43:370:43:40

when Jack starts potty training again.

0:43:400:43:42

Upstairs, we've taken out the old bathroom

0:43:440:43:47

to create a huge landing area

0:43:470:43:48

that gives the whole space a central focus

0:43:480:43:51

and I've got to admit, makes the house feel massive!

0:43:510:43:54

With Charlie's raised lintel,

0:43:570:43:58

the extension now feels part of the old house

0:43:580:44:01

and leads to two bedrooms, giving Jack and Ginny

0:44:010:44:04

the separate spaces they need to have a good night's sleep

0:44:040:44:08

and develop at their own rates.

0:44:080:44:11

After years of living in the smallest room,

0:44:110:44:13

Katie finally has the large and luxurious adult space she so deserves.

0:44:130:44:17

Somewhere she can retreat to and make her own.

0:44:170:44:20

There's a new master bathroom,

0:44:220:44:24

complete with waterfall taps that should keep Jack happy.

0:44:240:44:27

And Joanne and Wayne have a new plush bedroom,

0:44:300:44:33

transformed from the cramped room Jack and Ginny once shared.

0:44:330:44:38

We've even managed to fit in an ensuite bathroom,

0:44:380:44:41

making the morning and evening ritual much easier

0:44:410:44:44

for all five of them.

0:44:440:44:45

Finally, the back garden has been transformed

0:44:460:44:49

from the mud pit it once was,

0:44:490:44:51

into a stunning low-maintenance garden,

0:44:510:44:53

where the kids can safely burn off some energy.

0:44:530:44:57

There's a large decked area

0:44:570:44:59

and a safe water feature that Jack can play with

0:44:590:45:02

in plain sight from the kitchen.

0:45:020:45:04

Giving him a sense of, what was it again?

0:45:040:45:07

Agency?

0:45:070:45:09

16 months after they started,

0:45:110:45:14

the build is finally finished.

0:45:140:45:16

Wayne can now reclaim his life with Joanne and the children

0:45:160:45:19

in a home they'll want to come back to.

0:45:190:45:21

Joanne's brother Andy knows better than anyone

0:45:210:45:25

how much this will mean to them.

0:45:250:45:28

My sister's very, very emotional.

0:45:280:45:31

So, if I can just pre-warn Worcester and Hereford,

0:45:310:45:33

you're going to be flooded.

0:45:330:45:36

Well before the bad weather kicks in, because she...honestly.

0:45:360:45:39

When she opens that door, when it's all done,

0:45:390:45:41

she walks into there, she'll cry.

0:45:410:45:44

This is going to be immense for her. It really is going to be immense.

0:45:440:45:48

What was wrong with your house?

0:45:520:45:54

It was awful.

0:45:540:45:56

I don't think we could ever have finished it. It was horrible.

0:45:560:45:59

-What we hoping for?

-Just a home.

-Just normal.

0:45:590:46:03

Comfy, for the kids, not to walk on cold floors and things like that.

0:46:030:46:08

For Jack to want to come home as well and Ginny.

0:46:080:46:10

I hope we've given you what you needed.

0:46:100:46:14

Open your eyes.

0:46:140:46:16

Thank you.

0:46:230:46:24

It's not my house!

0:46:250:46:27

No, it is! That's the cool thing!

0:46:280:46:30

-Do you like it?

-Yeah.

0:46:350:46:38

-Brilliant.

-Do you know where you are?

-No.

0:46:390:46:43

-Thanks.

-Thank you.

0:46:430:46:46

So we took out the wall between what was the old kitchen...

0:46:460:46:50

This is your extension, basically.

0:46:500:46:53

-Oh, God!

-A new kitchen.

0:46:530:46:55

I know. It's lovely. Eventually.

0:46:550:46:58

Good grief!

0:46:580:47:00

Oh, Nick, it's fantastic, honestly.

0:47:020:47:04

-Brilliant.

-I don't think I'm going to stop now.

0:47:040:47:07

Is this the kind of family area that you were hoping for?

0:47:070:47:10

-And more!

-Nothing like this.

0:47:100:47:12

-We could never have done this.

-Never.

0:47:120:47:13

I'd never have imagined in a million years it would look like this.

0:47:130:47:16

Honestly, it's absolutely fantastic.

0:47:160:47:19

It's absolutely perfect.

0:47:190:47:20

-You haven't found a washing machine or tumble-dryer yet.

-No.

0:47:200:47:24

Well, come through this way.

0:47:240:47:26

Oh, d...!

0:47:280:47:30

Oh! Oh, my...!

0:47:300:47:32

Oh!

0:47:320:47:35

SHE SOBS: Thank you so much, Nick!

0:47:350:47:38

It's funny, a lot of people will be wondering why you're so emotional

0:47:390:47:42

about a utility room and a downstairs loo, but it makes

0:47:420:47:44

-a big difference, doesn't it?

-Yeah.

0:47:440:47:46

-So, you've got a moppable floor.

-Yeah.

0:47:460:47:48

-Having the extra sink in here is great...

-Yeah.

0:47:480:47:50

-..but Jack loves to play with water.

-Ooh, yeah.

0:47:500:47:53

-That can be his own sink.

-It can.

0:47:530:47:55

-He can make as much mess as he wants, you can mop it up.

-Yeah.

0:47:550:47:58

Also, we wanted to somehow get a downstairs loo in for Jack as well.

0:47:580:48:01

-Oh, yeah.

-It's not about just looking good,

0:48:010:48:04

it has to work for you,

0:48:040:48:05

it has to make your lives easier and more comfortable.

0:48:050:48:08

It's fantastic.

0:48:080:48:11

-So, it's a new staircase, as you can see.

-Oh, God.

0:48:170:48:20

Out of this world.

0:48:230:48:25

Oh, God!

0:48:270:48:29

It's lovely, it's absolutely brilliant.

0:48:330:48:36

It's huge! The kids could play...on the landing!

0:48:360:48:40

Oh, my life!

0:48:450:48:47

-Fantastic, isn't it? Lovely, modern toilet.

-I know!

0:48:480:48:51

Fantastic new bathroom.

0:48:510:48:53

And really beautiful taps on this,

0:48:530:48:55

with a waterfall jet, so whenever there's water,

0:48:550:48:58

-and you want to put Jack in the bath or something...

-Yeah.

0:48:580:49:02

..try and make it as interesting as possible.

0:49:020:49:04

-So you'll see that the...

-Oh, he'll love that.

0:49:040:49:06

-So you get like a waterfall tap.

-He'll love that!

0:49:060:49:09

And the same on this one.

0:49:090:49:12

God, he's going to absolutely love that.

0:49:130:49:16

JOANNE SOBS

0:49:170:49:20

Thank you so much.

0:49:200:49:22

Oh!

0:49:240:49:26

Oh!

0:49:270:49:29

So, in order of rooms, which way round shall we do this?

0:49:300:49:34

-Shall we start with Jack's?

-Yeah, and Ginny's, yeah,

0:49:340:49:36

-Jack's first, yeah.

-All right.

0:49:360:49:38

I'm not bothered about mine, really, as long as they...

0:49:380:49:41

Well, to be honest, we tidied yours up a bit, that was all we could do.

0:49:410:49:44

Jack's is through this way - would you like to go and have a look?

0:49:440:49:47

-Yeah.

-Go on, on you go.

0:49:470:49:49

It's great.

0:49:560:49:58

-It is. Lovely.

-Proper boy's room, this is, this is lovely.

-Yeah.

0:49:590:50:04

-Oh, he's going to love it.

-He is.

0:50:040:50:06

-Look at it!

-Bed's massive!

0:50:060:50:08

-Oh, he's going to absolutely love this.

-Yeah.

0:50:090:50:13

-It's just the job.

-Just right for him.

-It is, isn't it?

0:50:130:50:16

Ho-ho!

0:50:190:50:20

-Oh, our Ginny's going to love this.

-She will love this.

0:50:220:50:25

-Oh!

-It's ace.

0:50:260:50:28

Well, the old room was just cold and...

0:50:280:50:32

It was horrible, wasn't it, Wayne?

0:50:320:50:34

-They're going to absolutely love this.

-Yeah.

0:50:340:50:36

I can't wait to see their faces when they see it.

0:50:360:50:39

-You're sure we've got the kids' rooms right?

-Absolutely spot-on.

0:50:390:50:42

-Right, the next room - that's a bit different, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:50:420:50:45

We need something a bit more... elegant, really.

0:50:450:50:48

Want to go and see that one? Ready?

0:50:480:50:50

-How many rooms have we got now, Wayne!

-THEY LAUGH

0:50:530:50:56

JOANNE SNIFFLES

0:51:030:51:05

Oh!

0:51:050:51:07

-Oh, thank you so much, honestly!

-Thank you.

0:51:090:51:12

It's absolutely beautiful.

0:51:120:51:14

And I always wanted bedside tables with lamps on - always.

0:51:140:51:17

But they're not yours!

0:51:170:51:20

-This is Katie's!

-Is this Katie's room?!

0:51:200:51:22

-Katie's room?!

-No way!

-This Katie's room!

0:51:220:51:24

I thought it was our room!

0:51:240:51:26

-This is Kate's room!

-Yeah!

0:51:260:51:28

-Oh!

-I told you, we couldn't get round to yours, we had too much on!

0:51:280:51:31

Despite the fact she's growing up now,

0:51:310:51:33

she's always been your little princess, hasn't she?

0:51:330:51:36

-I know you wanted her to have a beautiful room.

-She will love it.

0:51:360:51:39

Well, that leaves just one room, then, doesn't it?

0:51:390:51:42

We've tidied it up a bit, but it means you end up in the back corner.

0:51:420:51:45

-Yeah.

-Is that all right?

-Yeah.

-You want to come and have a look?

-Yeah.

0:51:450:51:48

Oh, my...!

0:51:550:51:58

Brilliant.

0:52:000:52:01

This ain't my room.

0:52:010:52:03

Mine was magnolia and...!

0:52:030:52:05

Plenty of wardrobe space.

0:52:070:52:08

-Pretty bed...

-I love it. I love the colours, everything.

0:52:080:52:12

-I absolutely love it, absolutely love it.

-Yeah!

0:52:120:52:15

It's absolutely beautiful, Nick - really, really, beautiful.

0:52:150:52:19

-That's your cupboard door over there, isn't it?

-Yeah -

0:52:200:52:23

-the old cubby-hole.

-Have a look, because we've made it a bit bigger.

0:52:230:52:26

I'm frightened to look.

0:52:260:52:28

Oh, my god, we've got an en suite!

0:52:300:52:32

JOANNE GASPS

0:52:330:52:35

It's absolutely brilliant.

0:52:370:52:39

We thought it was really important to have separate bathrooms.

0:52:390:52:42

-Jack likes to play in the bathroom for a long time...

-Yeah.

0:52:420:52:45

..so if you need to get to work or anything else is going on,

0:52:450:52:48

-and you can't get into the bathroom because Jack's in there...

-Yeah.

0:52:480:52:51

..you need somewhere else, and the whole purpose of the house,

0:52:510:52:54

and the design of it, is to make it work for you,

0:52:540:52:57

dealing with everything you have to deal with every day.

0:52:570:53:00

So we're hoping...

0:53:000:53:02

-that this is going to make life a little easier.

-Yeah.

0:53:020:53:05

It's fantastic.

0:53:050:53:06

I think it's just unbelievable - unbelievable.

0:53:110:53:14

-You've just changed everything - it's not our house.

-No.

0:53:140:53:17

It'll take us a while to adjust

0:53:170:53:19

and... Because we'll just keep walking round this house...

0:53:190:53:22

-Not thinking it's ours.

-Yeah.

0:53:220:53:24

-Thinking we've got to give it you back!

-Yeah, yeah.

0:53:240:53:27

somebody's going to come and say,

0:53:270:53:29

-"No, you've got to go back to how you was."

-Mmm.

0:53:290:53:32

-It's unbelievable.

-And the kiddies...

0:53:330:53:36

And our Kate...

0:53:370:53:39

Our Kate - I can't wait to see her face.

0:53:400:53:43

KATE GASPS

0:53:490:53:51

Oh, my God!

0:53:510:53:53

Ain't it lovely, babe?

0:53:570:53:59

KATE SOBS

0:53:590:54:02

Oh, my God!

0:54:030:54:05

I would never have imagined it like this.

0:54:070:54:10

Oh...

0:54:100:54:12

Are you happy, babe?

0:54:120:54:13

Aw!

0:54:130:54:15

It's lovely.

0:54:160:54:18

It's beautiful.

0:54:200:54:21

-Really nice.

-We'll never see you now.

0:54:210:54:23

No! THEY LAUGH

0:54:230:54:25

Jo - why don't you tell her why she deserves a room like this?

0:54:250:54:28

She's lovely. And I love her to bits.

0:54:280:54:31

There's a lot of times you've needed me,

0:54:310:54:34

and I haven't been able to... see to Katie.

0:54:340:54:37

There's times I've been on the phone and I'll..

0:54:370:54:41

And I have been...down,

0:54:430:54:45

-and I'm sorry, Katie.

-That's all right.

0:54:450:54:48

But, erm, you really deserve this, you're a good kid.

0:54:490:54:51

-And you do as well.

-I love you to bits.

0:54:510:54:54

I do.

0:54:540:54:55

Wow!

0:55:000:55:02

-Huh!

-What do you reckon?

-Wow!

0:55:020:55:04

It's nice!

0:55:040:55:06

-It's really comfortable.

-Do you like this seat that they've done for you?

0:55:060:55:10

Yeah.

0:55:100:55:12

-I love the bed as well.

-Do you?

0:55:120:55:14

Yeah.

0:55:140:55:16

Wow! Jack...!

0:55:190:55:21

-Jack's.

-This is Jack's!

0:55:210:55:24

Oh, Ted asleep.

0:55:240:55:27

Do you love it?

0:55:270:55:29

It's Jack's room! New bed!

0:55:290:55:31

Look.

0:55:310:55:32

It's a van there.

0:55:320:55:34

-Can I play?

-Of course you can play, it's your room.

0:55:340:55:38

-Wow!

-Look!

0:55:380:55:40

Look at the cars!

0:55:400:55:42

-Does Teddy love the room?

-Yeah - you do, don't you?

0:55:420:55:46

-Mmm...

-Mwah!

-Mwah! Love ya.

0:55:460:55:48

Love you.

0:55:480:55:49

-TOY CAR ALARM SOUNDS

-He seems a lot more contented.

0:55:490:55:52

-Hello, farmer...

-What a difference.

0:55:520:55:55

Down, down, down.

0:55:560:55:58

You want to come down?

0:55:580:56:00

-Oh, my God!

-Oh, my...!

0:56:020:56:04

Look at the water feature!

0:56:080:56:10

Jack, look!

0:56:100:56:11

Wow!

0:56:110:56:13

Look at the water!

0:56:130:56:15

Nice area to sit, little beds and things.

0:56:190:56:22

-It's absolutely beautiful.

-I could never have dreamt it.

0:56:220:56:26

Come and say hello to the people who did all the work.

0:56:260:56:29

'This bit is scary enough for anyone,

0:56:310:56:33

'but for Jack, we're worried it could be just too overwhelming.'

0:56:330:56:38

PEOPLE IN CROWD: Hurray!

0:56:430:56:45

He's doing a lap of honour over there!

0:57:070:57:10

NICK LAUGHS, APPLAUSE CONTINUES

0:57:100:57:13

We didn't think he'd do it!

0:57:130:57:15

Well done, chap!

0:57:190:57:22

I'm not very good at things like this, talking in front of house,

0:57:220:57:25

but, er, thank you very much - I'm in debt to you all

0:57:250:57:28

for the rest of my life. Thank you very much.

0:57:280:57:31

-WOMAN:

-You're welcome!

0:57:310:57:33

Can't believe you've done this for me. You don't know me from Adam.

0:57:410:57:44

Thanks ever such a lot. If ever you need a favour...

0:57:440:57:47

-LAUGHTER

-..you know where to come, all right?

0:57:470:57:50

To be honest, having met some of them, that's a very dodgy offer!

0:57:500:57:54

Ladies and gentlemen, will you please come forward and say hello.

0:57:550:57:58

You all right...?

0:57:580:58:00

How are you...?

0:58:010:58:03

Thanks ever such a lot.

0:58:030:58:05

You're so welcome.

0:58:050:58:07

And you've all done it in all this time!

0:58:100:58:13

You enjoy it...!

0:58:130:58:15

We all know that times are tough at the moment,

0:58:150:58:17

and in every street in the country,

0:58:170:58:19

there will be a family struggling to get by, like this family.

0:58:190:58:21

And we all think something should be done about it.

0:58:210:58:24

But whilst we're waiting for somebody else to do something,

0:58:240:58:27

we could do something ourselves, like these people.

0:58:270:58:29

They've come out and given up time to change a family's life.

0:58:290:58:32

And it WILL change their lives.

0:58:320:58:34

Maybe you know somebody who needs your help.

0:58:340:58:37

Oh, yes!

0:58:420:58:43

I'm Billy, I'm the electrician!

0:58:480:58:51

Thank you very much.

0:58:530:58:55

Honestly, thanks ever such a lot.

0:58:550:58:58

Aw, love you.
