Hello and welcome to DIY SOS, this week coming to you from Dudley in the West Midlands. | 0:00:03 | 0:00:07
We're here to help a family trapped in a building site, | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
after trying desperately to make room for their three children. | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
By trying to make it better for the kiddies, | 0:00:14 | 0:00:18
if anything, we've made it worse. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:20
That's how I feel. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
A family struggling to see a future while dealing with a serious genetic condition. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:27
People say, "I don't know how you do it." | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
But if they're your own, you deal with it, don't you? | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
I love him to bits. I'd never change him. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
But we can't do it alone. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37
With only ten days to do the job, we need a small army. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:41
Is there anybody out there? | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
ALL: Yes! | 0:00:43 | 0:00:45
-Getting this family back in that house is second to none, really. -Come on then. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
I'm Joanne's brother. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:57
APPLAUSE | 0:00:57 | 0:00:59
This is DIY SOS - The Big Build. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:03
This is Dudley and I have to be honest, I am surprised how pretty it is. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:15
Here live dinner lady Joanne and factory butcher Wayne, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:20
who desperately need our help to turn their small three-bedroom house into a home for their children. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:26
22-year-old Katie, nine-year-old Ginny and Jack, who is seven. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:31
-Dad, Mum. -That's mummy's house, look, and Daddy's house. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:35
In 2006, their lives were thrown into disarray | 0:01:35 | 0:01:38
when all three children tested positive | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
for an inherited genetic condition called Fragile X Syndrome. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:45
There's different levels of the complaint. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
We've got the three levels of it. | 0:01:48 | 0:01:51
Kate, that's a carrier. Ginny, that's mild, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
and Jack, that's got the full. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
We all worry. We all get anxious. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
But there is like a brake in the brain to, you know, stop it. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
Whereas with Jack, and with Ginny a little bit, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
they can't seem to get that brake on as quick. | 0:02:10 | 0:02:14
That's why Jack's emotions, it's just out of his control. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:18
With symptoms similar to autism, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
severe learning and behavioural difficulties are common. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:23
Being away from familiar surroundings causes Jack massive anxiety, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:27
so making their home a safe haven is a top priority. | 0:02:27 | 0:02:31
Ginny will need help as she starts to mature into an adult. | 0:02:32 | 0:02:36
Jack will need to be looked after for the rest of his life, always. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:41
With Ginny's development already slowed, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:45
being forced to share a bedroom is further holding her back. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
Ginny, more or less, mimics children. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:54
She finds it hard to communicate to other children her age. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
That's why, because she's with Jack all the while, | 0:02:58 | 0:03:02
she's only mimicking him. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
So she looks far behind her years because of that. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:09
So it would be nice for Ginny to perhaps, I know this sounds awful, but to escape a little bit. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:16
16 months ago, they decided they had to do something, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
so they invested everything they had into extending their house | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
with Wayne taking on the build himself. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
We started out in 2010 and it was going to take six to eight weeks. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:33
It's took a year just to get it like this. | 0:03:33 | 0:03:37
-It took a lot more money than we thought. -Yes. | 0:03:37 | 0:03:40
And here we are now, in the rubbish. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:46
They've lived in a building site for more than a year. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:49
The disruption and noise making Jack and Ginny's anxieties worse. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:53
Big sister Katie saw the strains increase. | 0:03:53 | 0:03:57
Mum was at the end of her tether, ready to pull her hair out | 0:03:58 | 0:04:01
and tears started and the stress started. | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
The tears started. I was like, "Mum, it's going to be all right." | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
And of course, it just got to the point | 0:04:08 | 0:04:11
where we need help now to do it. | 0:04:11 | 0:04:13
By trying to make it better for the kiddies, | 0:04:13 | 0:04:16
it seems as if we've made it worse. | 0:04:16 | 0:04:18
Jack doesn't really want to come home. | 0:04:19 | 0:04:23
I feel... | 0:04:23 | 0:04:25
I don't want to do it any more. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
I can't do it any more. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:37
If you could do this house, the kids would want to come home | 0:04:37 | 0:04:43
and I would want to come home. | 0:04:43 | 0:04:45
I don't ever want to come home lately. | 0:04:45 | 0:04:48
And that's why we're here. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:53
To help Wayne and Joanne turn their house into a safe and welcoming sanctuary. | 0:04:53 | 0:04:58
I think for most people, | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
taking on an extension build would be stressful enough in itself. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
-When the rest of the house is in the state it's in, it would make it doubly stressful. -Yes. | 0:05:03 | 0:05:08
And with the specific needs the kids have got, | 0:05:08 | 0:05:11
it's a lot to be carrying around on your shoulders in one go. | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
-You feel you've failed. -Especially when it's been going on for so long. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18
-You feel you've failed? -Yes. -We do. -Failed who? -The kiddies. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
Yes. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:23 | |
-It hasn't quite gone according to plan. -No. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:26
You can see it's been a testing time for all five of them. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:33
With so much going on, Katie's support and care | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
for her half brother and sister has been vital. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
-Hello. -Hello. -What are we up to? | 0:05:42 | 0:05:45
Drawing Megan, my cousin. | 0:05:45 | 0:05:48
-It's my cousin as well. -Is that what Megan looks like? -No! -Yes. | 0:05:48 | 0:05:53
You know that we've come to try and change the house. | 0:05:55 | 0:05:58
How would you like to house to be? What things do you need? | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
Just something nice where we can all relax and chill | 0:06:01 | 0:06:04
and not be under one another's feet and Ginny can have her friends round. | 0:06:04 | 0:06:08
And her to have a nice bedroom and Jack to have his own little space. | 0:06:08 | 0:06:12
You know, just somewhere nice where we can have the family round on a Sunday and things like that. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:17
It would just be nice. | 0:06:17 | 0:06:19
If we manage to turn this into a home for you and the children, how does life change? | 0:06:19 | 0:06:23
-It would be lovely. -100%. -It would be lovely to come back home. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:30
Well, I tell you what, we'll do our best. We'll do our best. | 0:06:31 | 0:06:34
Jack sometimes struggles with meeting new people but thankfully, | 0:06:38 | 0:06:42
our motley crew aren't that scary. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
Ugly, but not scary! | 0:06:45 | 0:06:47
-Nice to meet you all. -Hello. -Hello, young man. How are you? | 0:06:47 | 0:06:51
-We need to get going. We'll see you soon. See you later in the week. Is that all right? -Bye bye. | 0:06:53 | 0:06:57
Time to call up the troops and prepare for battle. | 0:06:57 | 0:07:01
We've got 40 tradesman expected on site today alone. | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
So look, have a laugh... | 0:07:04 | 0:07:07
Normally, I like to do the pep talk but on this one, I don't have to. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:10
I'm Joanne's brother. From the bottom of my heart, thank you very much. | 0:07:10 | 0:07:15
If anybody needs any help, me and our kid, this is Joanne's uncle, | 0:07:15 | 0:07:19
if you need anything moving, just give us a shout and we'll muck in with you. | 0:07:19 | 0:07:23
But once again, thank you very much from the bottom of our hearts. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:27
APPLAUSE | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
Time for a short intro from build manager, Mark. Short! Get it?! | 0:07:34 | 0:07:40
Today, what we're looking for is a really clean, empty, clear site, | 0:07:40 | 0:07:44
so that tomorrow all the construction can start. | 0:07:44 | 0:07:47
-Morning, Bill. All right? -Yes. That wall's coming down there, is it? -Yes. | 0:07:50 | 0:07:54
-So I'll clear all the cooker and everything. -Yes, please. | 0:07:54 | 0:07:57
-Is he the only electrician we've got at the moment? -Bill's the only electrician. -That's terrifying! | 0:07:57 | 0:08:02
-We had the electricians in before he got here, so he hasn't got anything to do. -Oh, good. Thank God for that! | 0:08:02 | 0:08:08
Billy might not have much to do, but everyone else does. | 0:08:08 | 0:08:11
It's a bit like picking teams in the playground, this. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
You and Matt are down here with Bill and Darren. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:19
-The boys here. Who have we got? -Another Darren. -Another Darren. | 0:08:19 | 0:08:22
-And those two... -Carl. | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
This has all got confusing already. | 0:08:24 | 0:08:26
Who are the four that are staying down here? | 0:08:26 | 0:08:28
-Darren, Dean... -Lee. -And Darryl. | 0:08:28 | 0:08:33
-Matt's over here with Jules. -Matt's with Jules over here. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:37
-Right, where am I? -You're floating. | 0:08:37 | 0:08:39
-We'll use you as a floater. -I'm a floater? -Yes! | 0:08:39 | 0:08:41
-I'll be floating over here. -OK. You float over there. Go and bob around! | 0:08:41 | 0:08:45
Go on, floater! | 0:08:45 | 0:08:48
I'm not sure I like that. Day one and I'm already getting stick. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:53
How did you get to hear about this? | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
Why have you given up your time to come and help us? | 0:08:55 | 0:08:58
A good friend of mine, it's his sister. | 0:08:58 | 0:09:00
So it's all in a good cause. At the end of the day, it's nice to be nice. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:04
Local community. You can't do enough for local communities. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:06
We couldn't do it without you guys. We're like the little wheel that gets the big wheel going | 0:09:06 | 0:09:11
and to get this family back in that house is second to none, really. | 0:09:11 | 0:09:16
-Come on then. Let's start. -We're nearly there, look. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
You know, sometimes I wonder if we are best known | 0:09:20 | 0:09:24
for our building skills or our love of cakes? | 0:09:24 | 0:09:27
-You made them, did you? -Yes. -Thank you very much. | 0:09:27 | 0:09:31
-What's your name? -Kieran. -Hello, Kieran. I'm Billy. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:35
-They look very nice. -Can I try one? | 0:09:35 | 0:09:37
Which one shall I try? That one there? Ta, sweetheart. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:42
They're lovely, Kieran. | 0:09:44 | 0:09:46
I tell you what, you'll get another four hours work out of me now! | 0:09:46 | 0:09:49
That will be four hours then! In total! We haven't even had one yet. | 0:09:50 | 0:09:54
As usual, we get just nine days to finish the job. Why nine days? | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
Because some bloke in London thought it was a good idea. | 0:09:58 | 0:10:01
Talk me through it, then. What's the plan? What are we doing with this place? | 0:10:01 | 0:10:05
It might be a small house, | 0:10:07 | 0:10:10
but designer Charlie Luxton has big plans. | 0:10:10 | 0:10:12
I think that's the critical end and then work that way. | 0:10:12 | 0:10:16
He's worked on several of these builds before and despite some testing moments... | 0:10:16 | 0:10:20
-If you weren't on that thing, I'd thump you. You're pushing it. -..he's come back for more. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:24
-Generally, you're quite well respected when you turn up on shows, aren't you? -I was! | 0:10:24 | 0:10:29
He's a bit of a perfectionist, | 0:10:29 | 0:10:32
but his determination has always produced impressive results. | 0:10:32 | 0:10:35
And ladies, he's quite hunky too! | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
It's not a big house. It's going to be a lot bigger when the extension is added on. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
They embarked on a project with a plan that didn't really work. | 0:10:42 | 0:10:46
It's a small house, so I really tried to keep the circulation space as generous as possible. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:52
I know a lot of people think, make the rooms as big as possible, | 0:10:52 | 0:10:55
but you've got lots of tight rooms and very tight circulation space | 0:10:55 | 0:10:59
so I think it makes the house very claustrophobic. | 0:10:59 | 0:11:02
So just to give a little bit more generosity, little bit more space to the circulation, | 0:11:02 | 0:11:06
I think it will make the house feel a lot bigger. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:09
Charlie's plan is to knock through from the extension downstairs | 0:11:09 | 0:11:13
to make a kitchen and dining area big enough for all five of them. | 0:11:13 | 0:11:17
With Jack's condition, developments like potty training have been much slower, | 0:11:17 | 0:11:21
so to help make things easier for them all, we're going to put in both a utility room and a downstairs loo. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:27
Upstairs, Charlie plans to create a light and airy landing space with all the bedrooms feeding off it. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:33
To do this, we're going to demolish the existing bathroom. | 0:11:33 | 0:11:36
But as Jack loves running water, | 0:11:36 | 0:11:38
we're not just going to replace like-for-like. | 0:11:38 | 0:11:41
We are giving the family a main bathroom and an ensuite too. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:45
With Wayne and Joanne in the master bedroom, | 0:11:45 | 0:11:47
we'll move Katie out of the smallest room and put her into the big double room she deserves. | 0:11:47 | 0:11:51
Last, but no means least, it's vital Jack and Jenny get a bedroom each. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:56
But so they don't get too lonely, | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
we're keeping them right next door to each other. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:00
Charlie's design will create the light, airy and spacious home | 0:12:00 | 0:12:04
the family dreamt of and desperately needed | 0:12:04 | 0:12:06
when they started the build more than a year ago. | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
And he's proving he's smart outside of the house too | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
with a little landscape designing. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:15
Jack really likes playing in the garden. He loves water. | 0:12:15 | 0:12:19
We might try and get a hand-operated pump. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
The water and the pumping is a good thing for them to do because it gives them agency. | 0:12:22 | 0:12:26
-It makes them feel like they're doing something. -It gives them? -Agency. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:29
-Agency? -Agency. It's a good word. I learnt that the other day. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:32
I thought it made the guy sound really clever so I thought I'd try on you! | 0:12:32 | 0:12:35
-You think I'm really clever now, don't you? -It gives them agency. -Yes. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:40
I'm not quite sure I know what it means! | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42
But I was impressed with it. | 0:12:44 | 0:12:47
We're propping up the ceiling now. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
We're going to take out all of this through here. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
So big steel has to go in through here, so we have to support the ceiling on both sides. | 0:12:55 | 0:12:59
There are plenty of people working on it, look. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:02
So far so good. We'll have this wall out in no time now. | 0:13:02 | 0:13:05
Let's knock her open. | 0:13:05 | 0:13:07
Jules absolutely loves smashing down walls. The bigger the better. Sometimes, I wish we had two of him! | 0:13:13 | 0:13:19
But upstairs, there's discord. | 0:13:19 | 0:13:21
You can't just start stripping walls out in the house if it's the structural integrity of it. | 0:13:21 | 0:13:26
-I get that. -It's like ripping a heart out of a lamb. | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
You're going to take that out to put a wall up there to gain two foot. | 0:13:32 | 0:13:36
It's not two foot. It's much more. | 0:13:36 | 0:13:38
It comes back to here. So this all becomes open landing. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:42
But surely, it's living space you're trying to give them, | 0:13:42 | 0:13:45
not area at the top of the stairs. We're only here for nine days. | 0:13:45 | 0:13:48
But they're here for a lifetime. | 0:13:48 | 0:13:51
I appreciate that and they'll be absolutely overwhelmed when they come back. | 0:13:51 | 0:13:55
I think even more so if this wall is gone. | 0:13:55 | 0:13:58
I don't think they will notice it. | 0:13:58 | 0:14:01
That's why we have designers to design and builders to build. | 0:14:03 | 0:14:07
I wonder where that leaves me? | 0:14:07 | 0:14:09
Probably with the full support of the team. | 0:14:09 | 0:14:11
-What's the craic with that kitchen utility room? -It's going very well. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:15
Knowlesy's tried to sow the seed of doubt, | 0:14:15 | 0:14:18
but don't worry about any of that. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:20
-Why? -He thinks it's all going to fall down, doesn't he? | 0:14:20 | 0:14:23
-He's a presenter. He's a TV presenter. -Exactly. -What does he know about it? | 0:14:23 | 0:14:28
Are you not worried that wall is going to fall down? | 0:14:28 | 0:14:31
-It's absolutely fine. -I'm worried about my boys. | 0:14:31 | 0:14:34
I don't want it all coming down on your head. I want to look after you. | 0:14:34 | 0:14:37
-I imagine you knew that. He was being nice about me asking, wasn't he? -Obviously, yes. | 0:14:37 | 0:14:41
-Charlie was looking for you. -He's out the back. I'll go and find him. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:45
-Yes, you float that way. -Go on, floater! | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
# Today I don't feel like doing anything. # | 0:14:47 | 0:14:49
If I'm not needed here, I might just sneak off to attend to some important business. | 0:14:49 | 0:14:55
Maybe I should have told them where I was going. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:58
# I'm gonna kick my feet up... # | 0:14:58 | 0:14:59
-You haven't seen Nick, have you? Knowlesy. -No. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
-I'll look for him downstairs. -If you see him, I'm looking for him. | 0:15:02 | 0:15:08
# Leave a message at the tone | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
# Today I swear I'm not doing anything | 0:15:11 | 0:15:15
# Nothing at all | 0:15:15 | 0:15:17
# Oooh, oooh, oooh. # | 0:15:17 | 0:15:19
What a fantastic day one. The boys are going great guns out there. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:23
Sparks is still bashing away in here. We've got the opening in the kitchen. Padstones are in. They're all drying. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:28
The steel is going in first thing in the morning. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
Shall we have a look upstairs? Chris has been knocking walls out up there and everything has been going on. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:36
The new stud work's gone in place. That's going to be our ensuite. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:39
This is going to be our main family bathroom in here, which is great. | 0:15:39 | 0:15:44
In here the boys are creating the new bedrooms. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
You're probably wondering why I'm doing this, because Nick normally does it. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:51
But we don't know where he is. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:53
You're auditioning for my job, that's what you're doing! Stop it! | 0:15:53 | 0:15:56
It's a beautiful morning in Dudley and as they say, | 0:15:58 | 0:16:02
an army marches on its stomach. | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
-Where have you been? -Me? | 0:16:05 | 0:16:07
I was out doing some research around Dudley last night. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:11
No, no, no. From yesterday probably lunchtime you were missing. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:15
I like to do proper research. I don't just... I take it seriously. | 0:16:15 | 0:16:19
I went out and had a look around the town. | 0:16:19 | 0:16:22
So that's not you outside Number Ten Downing Street? | 0:16:22 | 0:16:26
Where did you get that? | 0:16:26 | 0:16:28
-You know them social networking sites? -Yes. -It's all over it. | 0:16:28 | 0:16:32
-So that's not you outside 10 Downing Street? -I tell you what it was. I didn't want to mention anything. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:37
You know the Children In Need Big Build in Liverpool? | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
Yes, I've still got the scar. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
Well, they rang me up and said we'd like to honour you all | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
and bring you to Number Ten Downing Street to meet the Prime Minister | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
and his wife to say thank you for all your hard work. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:51
-That was nice of them. All of us? -We're on a job, so... | 0:16:51 | 0:16:54
I said, "We can't all go." So they said, "Well, can you just make it?" So I went, "Yes, all right." | 0:16:54 | 0:16:58
So we're here grafting and you're up there on our behalf accepting thank you | 0:16:58 | 0:17:03
for all the hard work we done for Children In Need in Liverpool? | 0:17:03 | 0:17:07
I was very generous in my speech. | 0:17:07 | 0:17:08
I tell you what, I've known you a lot of years. That's naughty. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:12
-That's generous of me. -Naughty. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:13
You wouldn't have wanted to go to Number Ten, would you, Bill? | 0:17:13 | 0:17:16
I've been there and done that with Maggie Thatcher when she was in charge. | 0:17:16 | 0:17:20
But I think it's a great compliment, going to Number Ten. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:24
See, he appreciates me going to Number Ten on your behalf. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:27
You just made it sound like it's a compliment that he's gone | 0:17:27 | 0:17:31
to accept the award on our behalf. | 0:17:31 | 0:17:33
One of us had to go and the only one that doesn't do any work is Nick. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:37
-That's not what I meant. -He has got a... No, fair play, Bill. | 0:17:37 | 0:17:40
No, hang on. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:44
Charlie's design is a work of art, worthy of an old master. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:49
But to turn it into a reality, we've got to put in some serious hard graft first. | 0:17:49 | 0:17:54
Thankfully, some genius has come up with a useful invention to do the tricky bit for us. | 0:17:56 | 0:18:01
Modern technology. Health and safety. Genie lift. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:05
You get that lift in and the lift winds the steel up to our desired height | 0:18:05 | 0:18:11
and we wheel it back and plonk it in place. | 0:18:11 | 0:18:15
Brilliant! It takes the weight off your back. Probably ought to measure the gap first though. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:19
Have we got enough room? | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
Time to bring in the muscle. Or Charlie. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
Is that the best chisel we've got? | 0:18:33 | 0:18:35
Come on! | 0:18:35 | 0:18:37
Come on! | 0:18:39 | 0:18:42
-Mr da Vinci, would you like a cup of tea? -I would love a tea, mate. | 0:18:43 | 0:18:46
Cup of tea for Leonardo da Vinci, please! | 0:18:46 | 0:18:49
That's fine. Right. | 0:18:54 | 0:18:56
The beam is in, as you can see. So that's great now. | 0:18:59 | 0:19:02
We can start dropping the load on to it. | 0:19:02 | 0:19:05
It will now hold the middle of the house up, which is very exciting, | 0:19:05 | 0:19:09
because you need the middle of the house held up. | 0:19:09 | 0:19:12
Otherwise it would fall down, wouldn't it? | 0:19:12 | 0:19:15
We've only been here for one day, | 0:19:17 | 0:19:19
but already the house looks like it's gone 12 rounds with Muhammad Ali. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
It would have taken Wayne years to get to this point. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
What's the most difficult thing | 0:19:27 | 0:19:29
about being in the situation you're in with the difficulties that the children have? | 0:19:29 | 0:19:33
Normal day things like just going to the shop. | 0:19:33 | 0:19:36
It would probably need two of you to take him. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:39
If he doesn't want to go anywhere, he won't go. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:43
Stuff like that. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:45
I have to literally put him over my shoulder | 0:19:45 | 0:19:48
to get him back in the house and stuff like that. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:51
People say, "I don't know how you do it." | 0:19:51 | 0:19:53
But everybody that has kids, if they're your own, | 0:19:53 | 0:19:58
you deal with it, don't you? | 0:19:58 | 0:20:00
So you can't do those normal things that you expect to do with your son? | 0:20:00 | 0:20:05
Definitely. I go to the football and watch the football | 0:20:05 | 0:20:08
and my mates have got their kids there. | 0:20:08 | 0:20:11
I don't ever show it, but... | 0:20:12 | 0:20:14
..it's hard, knowing that I'll never be able to take my son. | 0:20:16 | 0:20:21
So how do you not fold up? | 0:20:21 | 0:20:23
How do you manage the stress, because there's a lot of it? | 0:20:23 | 0:20:27
You've never seen such a loving kid with me and Joanne as him. | 0:20:27 | 0:20:34
You've seen what is normal, but normal kids, | 0:20:34 | 0:20:38
I've never seen them as loving as he can be. | 0:20:38 | 0:20:42
So for all the difficulties that you face every day, | 0:20:42 | 0:20:45
you get more back than you might do... | 0:20:45 | 0:20:48
I love him to bits. I'd never change him. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
I'd like another kid exactly the same as him | 0:20:52 | 0:20:56
to do the normal things, but I wouldn't change Jack. | 0:20:56 | 0:20:58
I love him to bits. | 0:20:58 | 0:21:00
With the house finished, Wayne will be able to start | 0:21:03 | 0:21:07
reclaiming his life, spending more time with the whole family | 0:21:07 | 0:21:10
and banishing the ghosts of a project he just couldn't finish alone. | 0:21:10 | 0:21:14
Back on site, things aren't exactly harmonious. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:19
Builders and designers don't always play well together. | 0:21:19 | 0:21:24
It should have been done yesterday and he missed the boat. | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
It's like turning up to a ferry port and there's the ferry 100 yards out, going, you've missed it. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:31
So get over it. | 0:21:31 | 0:21:33
He's asking the ferry to turn round and come back to pick him up. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:36
And we're the captain of the ship saying, "No, we're not going to do it." | 0:21:36 | 0:21:40
That's exactly it. It's too late. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:41
We are going to go backwards in a minute. We can't afford to. | 0:21:41 | 0:21:45
I don't know. They were pretty unhappy about it. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:47
It has been discussed from the very first moment of the build | 0:21:47 | 0:21:51
and to be honest, it is about trying to make the spaces feel as one | 0:21:51 | 0:21:55
and not feel like an extension has been bolted on to the site. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
Also, if it's taller, it won't feel as tight. | 0:21:58 | 0:22:00
We made that tight in there to make the bedroom as big as possible. | 0:22:00 | 0:22:04
When it's done, they're going to be like, it was the right decision. But they're still in a mood about it! | 0:22:04 | 0:22:10
-He can fit under it perfectly well. -He's fine. | 0:22:10 | 0:22:13
-I can fit under it perfectly well. -Just. | 0:22:14 | 0:22:17
You can go under it perfectly well, so you are fine too. So what's the problem? | 0:22:17 | 0:22:23
-It's very low. -We're just about to start boarding the ceiling. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:27
If we do that, then this isn't going to be done until some time tomorrow. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:31
So it has a knock-on effect. That's what I'm trying to say. | 0:22:31 | 0:22:35
-How many hours' work are we talking about? -Three hours' work. | 0:22:35 | 0:22:38
-Have we got two blokes? -As long as they don't get in anybody's way | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
and it doesn't hold anybody else up. | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
But if we can't get someone to do it quickly... | 0:22:43 | 0:22:47
-I accept that. -Yes? -Yes. | 0:22:47 | 0:22:49
'Sometimes I feel like a UN peacekeeper in this job.' | 0:22:49 | 0:22:53
Do you think it would be possible to get the head out above the door | 0:22:53 | 0:22:56
in three hours tonight and have it finished, lintels in. | 0:22:56 | 0:23:00
-Is it possible to do with? -Yes. -Can you do it? -Yes. -Thank you. | 0:23:00 | 0:23:03
Charlie will help you. He will carry for you. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:08
I've been trying to get people to do it... | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
-I've offered to do it all afternoon. -Right, shut this. That's it. | 0:23:10 | 0:23:14
-Cheers, Chris. -You wanted it done, Charlie. No slacking. | 0:23:16 | 0:23:19
-Many hands make light work. -Sir. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
One of the young Jack's big difficulties is learning to use the toilet. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:29
Having one downstairs will make a huge difference, | 0:23:29 | 0:23:32
but we're having to lower the floor to get the plumbing in. | 0:23:32 | 0:23:36
Nice job. I like this sort of work. Proper work this, digging. | 0:23:36 | 0:23:40
I was reared on this sort of work. What my dad used to do. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:44
He taught me everything I know, my dad. Everything. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:47
Didn't do nothing at school. No qualifications. | 0:23:47 | 0:23:50
Didn't take any exams. I'm not an academic at all. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:54
I left school and he's building a house. | 0:23:54 | 0:23:56
My dad said, "Come and work with me for two weeks." | 0:23:56 | 0:24:00
That was in 1986. Still here. | 0:24:00 | 0:24:03
So I didn't really choose this vocation. It chose me. | 0:24:03 | 0:24:08
Who was that mucky git? | 0:24:08 | 0:24:10
You can guess, if you like. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:13
It turns out a university education and good manners don't necessarily go hand-in-hand! | 0:24:13 | 0:24:17
One, two, three. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:20
It's nice to see the intellectual on the team getting a few honest blisters. | 0:24:20 | 0:24:24
They're not going to do it again for 50 years, so we may as well get it right. | 0:24:24 | 0:24:27
Because we're putting the kids over there, | 0:24:27 | 0:24:30
we want it to feel like it's part of the main house | 0:24:30 | 0:24:32
so I think it is important. | 0:24:32 | 0:24:34
-It's not been that hard, has it? -No. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:36
No, not really. It's just Mark making a big song and dance out of it. | 0:24:36 | 0:24:40
I'm glad I came up with that idea. I'll have a tea, please. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:45
# Stand up, hands up Don't sit down. # | 0:24:45 | 0:24:48
-What are your names? -My name is Del. -Del. And? -My name is Kel. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
-So you're putting all the plumbing in for us? -We have, yes. | 0:24:51 | 0:24:54
That's very kind of you. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:56
We live locally ourselves and once we heard about it, | 0:24:56 | 0:24:59
it was a no-brainer really, to get involved. | 0:24:59 | 0:25:02
-How are you finding the site so far? -A bit chaotic, but otherwise OK. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:06
Considering how many people there are in a square foot, | 0:25:06 | 0:25:09
nobody has really got in anybody else's way. | 0:25:09 | 0:25:12
It's quite something, isn't it? And also, nobody has lost their temper. | 0:25:12 | 0:25:15
Not yet! It's only a couple of days in! | 0:25:15 | 0:25:18
With the mood so good and so many problems appearing to be resolved, | 0:25:18 | 0:25:23
I felt it was time I could slip away. | 0:25:23 | 0:25:26
Katie is more than just a big sister to Ginny and Jack. | 0:25:26 | 0:25:28
She's a carer too, giving her mum and Wayne vital support. | 0:25:28 | 0:25:32
But that means trips out with friends like this one have been few and far between. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:37
She knows better than anyone the strains the build has put on the family. | 0:25:38 | 0:25:43
It's something really which hasn't just affected one, | 0:25:43 | 0:25:47
it has put a lot of stress and strain on the pair of them. | 0:25:47 | 0:25:50
You can tell it has. You can really tell it's got them down. | 0:25:50 | 0:25:54
My mum is not the same person any more. You know, she's not. | 0:25:54 | 0:25:58
So you think if we get the house working properly, your mum, | 0:25:58 | 0:26:02
-like you know her... -Will come back again. | 0:26:02 | 0:26:05
-Do you think? -Yes. I think so. I definitely think so. | 0:26:05 | 0:26:08
So if you could wave a magic wand and the house is done, | 0:26:08 | 0:26:11
what would the house be like? | 0:26:11 | 0:26:13
I think it would just be magic, | 0:26:13 | 0:26:15
because things will just be wonderful. | 0:26:15 | 0:26:17
You know, for Mum and Wayne to have that homely feeling. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:23
Not to walk through that door and see cables hanging | 0:26:23 | 0:26:26
and plaster off the walls. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:28
It would be out of this world. It would just be magic. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:31
-You must be pretty excited about when we finish, then? -I am, yes. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:35
-Do you think your mum will cry? -Yes. | 0:26:35 | 0:26:37
-Do you think Wayne will cry? -Yes. -Do you think so? -Yes. We all will. | 0:26:37 | 0:26:40
-He's never going to live that down at work, is he? -No. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:43
-If he turns up back at work having had a cry on telly. -Yes. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:47
No, it will be lovely. | 0:26:47 | 0:26:48
Move your sofa, there's a car coming. | 0:26:57 | 0:26:59
Move your sofa back. That's it. Over there. Sit down. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:05
# There was a cold wind blowing | 0:27:05 | 0:27:07
# From the north and to the south. # | 0:27:07 | 0:27:10
With no central heating, the family must have dreaded cold winter mornings like this one. | 0:27:10 | 0:27:15
They're not the only ones. | 0:27:15 | 0:27:17
It starts frosting tonight and it really gets cold Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday. | 0:27:17 | 0:27:23
Friday looks OK because it's up to six degrees. | 0:27:23 | 0:27:27
-It doesn't get warm enough. It's not going to defrost the ground. -No. | 0:27:27 | 0:27:30
So ideally, we could do with getting the boxes in and the plants in by tomorrow afternoon. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:36
You're effectively saying, we have to finish the garden in two days. | 0:27:36 | 0:27:39
If that weather stays the same as it is. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:42
It's getting the turf down in two days that's the issue. | 0:27:42 | 0:27:45
We can possibly do a few other things around it. | 0:27:45 | 0:27:48
We've had no luck. I have to go and find out where we are with the plants. | 0:27:48 | 0:27:51
-We need some trees and we need some plants. Otherwise, it's not going to look any good. -No. | 0:27:51 | 0:27:56
Get on with it, then! With the pressure on, Charlie's plans for the water feature have changed too. | 0:27:56 | 0:28:01
Gone is the hand pump, in is a rubbish looking bucket, really. | 0:28:01 | 0:28:05
So what I'm thinking is that this is a raised box. | 0:28:06 | 0:28:09
It's about 350 high, which takes you just over the top of that. | 0:28:09 | 0:28:12
Then we'll put pebbles in the bottom of it | 0:28:12 | 0:28:15
and a little pump and they can fill it from the outdoor tap | 0:28:15 | 0:28:18
and I think we might paint it, like a really bright colour. | 0:28:18 | 0:28:22
-It'll be lovely. -Like a yellow or red, or something. | 0:28:22 | 0:28:25
-It's just so he can sit and play in it. -Let's go and do it then. | 0:28:25 | 0:28:28
-Camembert, are you happy with that? -I'm happy with that. -Lovely. | 0:28:28 | 0:28:31
It's a bucket! It's going to look like a bucket! | 0:28:31 | 0:28:34
What we're trying to give Jack is some outside space that's safe and familiar | 0:28:34 | 0:28:38
and where Wayne and Joanne can keep an eye on him easily. | 0:28:38 | 0:28:40
His condition means he needs constant round-the-clock care. | 0:28:40 | 0:28:44
Joanne's only time off comes when Jack is at a local special needs school. | 0:28:44 | 0:28:49
Your uncle and brother have been at the house | 0:28:49 | 0:28:52
-and they've been saying that you feel you don't deserve this. -Yes. It's weird. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:56
-Why? -I don't know. | 0:28:56 | 0:28:58
We started the work and thought we were going to finish it | 0:28:58 | 0:29:03
and you just feel awful that you haven't been able to finish it. | 0:29:03 | 0:29:06
If it hadn't have been for you lot, I don't know what I'd have done. | 0:29:06 | 0:29:10
It's hard enough, I don't like that word "normal", because everybody is different, | 0:29:10 | 0:29:14
but it's hard enough with children. | 0:29:14 | 0:29:16
But when your child has sensory problems and things like that, | 0:29:16 | 0:29:20
even if somebody had to use a drill or if Wayne had to drill, you've always got to take him out. | 0:29:20 | 0:29:25
Half way down the road, someone could just disturb Jack | 0:29:25 | 0:29:29
so his anxiety levels and stress levels are always peaking. | 0:29:29 | 0:29:34
It takes him a long while to settle. | 0:29:34 | 0:29:37
-Have you been dreaming about the house being fixed up? Can you imagine what we've done to it? -No. | 0:29:37 | 0:29:43
It will just be nice to not walk in... | 0:29:43 | 0:29:45
When I used to walk in the house, | 0:29:45 | 0:29:48
I used to just feel that low all of a sudden. | 0:29:48 | 0:29:51
Perhaps I'd had a bit of a rough day or a morning with Jack, | 0:29:51 | 0:29:54
getting him to school, and then coming back. | 0:29:54 | 0:29:58
Nine times out of ten, Jack didn't want to come back in the house because it was just... Just a mess. | 0:29:58 | 0:30:04
You keep saying, "It'll be done soon, Jack. It will be done soon, Jack." | 0:30:05 | 0:30:09
But you know deep down in your heart of hearts | 0:30:09 | 0:30:12
it's going to take a hell of a long time to get it straight. | 0:30:12 | 0:30:15
-Maybe Jack will be calmer if he has his own space. -I think so. | 0:30:15 | 0:30:19
And it will be somewhere for him to retreat to | 0:30:19 | 0:30:21
if he wants a bit of time out himself. | 0:30:21 | 0:30:24
So how does life change? | 0:30:24 | 0:30:26
It'll be so much easier. The pressure would be off. | 0:30:26 | 0:30:29
I can't believe it, Nick, honestly. | 0:30:29 | 0:30:31
You're sitting here next to me now and I still can't believe it! | 0:30:31 | 0:30:34
-You'll have to believe it when you walk in. I think it's going to be quite emotional. -Yes. | 0:30:34 | 0:30:38
But I will just be glad to be settled and back home, | 0:30:38 | 0:30:41
with everything back to normal. | 0:30:41 | 0:30:43
As normal as they can be. | 0:30:46 | 0:30:48
Nearer normal. | 0:30:49 | 0:30:50
It's a dream. | 0:30:52 | 0:30:53
We can't make all the other difficulties that you face any better, | 0:30:56 | 0:31:00
but we can certainly give you a better environment in which to face them. | 0:31:00 | 0:31:04
That would be lovely. | 0:31:04 | 0:31:06
Back on site, things are going at a million miles an hour. | 0:31:13 | 0:31:18
But there's always time for little good grace. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:20
Can I just, on behalf of myself, commend you on this decision | 0:31:22 | 0:31:25
to higher this up because I was totally disagreeing with everyone yesterday quietly | 0:31:25 | 0:31:30
and I think it has just finished this whole open space off. | 0:31:30 | 0:31:35
Raising it up by 350 mil might not sound like a lot. | 0:31:35 | 0:31:39
That much, Charlie's pushed it up. | 0:31:39 | 0:31:42
It's a wonderful thing. | 0:31:43 | 0:31:46
-Thank you. I commend you on behalf of me. -Thank you very much, mate. | 0:31:46 | 0:31:50
That's brilliant. | 0:31:50 | 0:31:51
That's unbelievable! | 0:31:51 | 0:31:53
I think that's the first time I've ever seen Chris admit he was wrong. | 0:31:53 | 0:31:58
-This is your design, isn't it? This front garden. -Yes. | 0:31:59 | 0:32:02
-You've got a load of tarmac up here. -Loads of it. Loads of tarmac. | 0:32:02 | 0:32:07
Tarmac and gravel and concrete kerbstones. | 0:32:07 | 0:32:10
If I had my way, up the driveway, I'm going to put double yellow lines up there. | 0:32:10 | 0:32:15
-Have double yellow lines up the driveway. -Cats eyes! -Cats eyes! | 0:32:16 | 0:32:21
-Cats eyes up the middle. -There's going to be no messing around. | 0:32:21 | 0:32:25
There's going to be nothing organic, flowery or fruity about it. | 0:32:25 | 0:32:28
They can park their car and let the rain run off. | 0:32:28 | 0:32:30
Can I just mention, in amongst your garden talk, | 0:32:30 | 0:32:33
there's a building needs doing. | 0:32:33 | 0:32:35
Remember? It's the big thing in between the front and the back garden | 0:32:35 | 0:32:38
that you were arguing about. | 0:32:38 | 0:32:41
You wouldn't catch our plasterers messing about with plants and raised flowerbeds. | 0:32:41 | 0:32:45
No. These are men on a mission. | 0:32:45 | 0:32:47
Absolutely immense push, lads. This is phenomenal. | 0:32:47 | 0:32:50
It can all be drying out, we can get the kitchen in, we can get the floors down. | 0:32:50 | 0:32:54
Happy days. Brilliant. Thank you, guys. | 0:32:54 | 0:32:56
-Thanks for having us. -But you have left little bit around the corner! | 0:32:56 | 0:33:01
# I don't care about the soaps No, I don't care about the soaps | 0:33:03 | 0:33:07
# Though I must feel like I'm in an Eastenders episode. # | 0:33:08 | 0:33:12
To the untrained eye, it would look like we haven't done a great deal in here. | 0:33:12 | 0:33:16
But this is all prepped ready for plastering tomorrow and that will mean in just three days, | 0:33:16 | 0:33:21
the whole of the upstairs will be plastered. | 0:33:21 | 0:33:24
Downstairs is flying along as well. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:26
Another thing, and don't tell Charlie I said this, but he's right. | 0:33:26 | 0:33:29
This does look like a very big landing, which means it feels like a big house, even if it isn't. | 0:33:29 | 0:33:34
Very nice. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:36
The ground is so hard it won't defrost, so we're going to have to defrost it with a big burner. | 0:33:39 | 0:33:44
If the ground is like that, what about the poor old plants? | 0:33:44 | 0:33:48
Permafrost has just set in. | 0:33:52 | 0:33:54
We've got at least three inches on the top which is absolutely rock solid. | 0:33:54 | 0:33:58
Feel free to try it with the pick. | 0:33:58 | 0:34:01
That is ridiculous! | 0:34:07 | 0:34:09
It's difficult to show you on screen just how cold it is, but it's freezing. | 0:34:09 | 0:34:14
The grass won't take root on frozen soil so the flamethrower | 0:34:14 | 0:34:17
is our only hope if we're going to get this garden done in time. | 0:34:17 | 0:34:21
If Mark's feeling inadequate, he's certainly not showing it. | 0:34:21 | 0:34:25
This is what you call gardening. I'm telling you. | 0:34:25 | 0:34:27
None of this poncing around with snippers and stuff. | 0:34:27 | 0:34:30
Get one of these in your garden. | 0:34:30 | 0:34:32
The boys have got the clear all this back today for the path. | 0:34:32 | 0:34:35
What we're trying to do is make a practical space in the front of the house | 0:34:35 | 0:34:38
so they can move Jack around and get him in and out of the house without hurting himself. | 0:34:38 | 0:34:43
Really, that's what it's about. | 0:34:43 | 0:34:45
They've all been laughing at me because I wanted this all Tarmaced | 0:34:46 | 0:34:50
but I tell you what, as far as I'm concerned, it's a work of art. | 0:34:50 | 0:34:53
-Definitely. -It's a work of art. -That's why they've sent us. -Exactly. | 0:34:53 | 0:34:57
The A-Team! | 0:34:57 | 0:34:59
I think Mark might be getting into this design thing. | 0:34:59 | 0:35:02
Three, two... | 0:35:02 | 0:35:05
Will it fit? Will it fit? | 0:35:05 | 0:35:09
Hooray! Look at that there! Don't you dare walk on that. | 0:35:09 | 0:35:13
If you're coming out here, clean your feet. | 0:35:13 | 0:35:16
You know when they paved paradise to put up a parking lot, it was Mark that won the contract! | 0:35:16 | 0:35:21
What's the difference between a buffalo and a bison? | 0:35:21 | 0:35:25
You can wash your hands in a bison! | 0:35:26 | 0:35:28
Yes, jokes and building. All you have to do is feed him. | 0:35:28 | 0:35:31
Keep your hands and feet away from his mouth when he's eating and you'll be perfectly safe. | 0:35:31 | 0:35:36
-Oh look, there's a kitchen going in. -What have you got for us, Pete? -Nice cream kitchen. Nice and light. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:41
-It's going to bring a lot of light. It's a proper cook's kitchen. -The clock is ticking. | 0:35:41 | 0:35:46
-Thank you very much. -See you later. -All right. Nice one. | 0:35:46 | 0:35:49
What do you think? It's beautiful isn't it? | 0:35:56 | 0:35:59
-He's overdone the tarmac a bit. -What? -You've overdone the tarmac a bit. | 0:35:59 | 0:36:02
I'd ignore him saying that you've overdone it. | 0:36:02 | 0:36:05
I think what you've done is provide a very reasonable environment for them to put their cars. | 0:36:05 | 0:36:10
-From a disabled point of view... -What's that? | 0:36:10 | 0:36:13
-What is it? -Insulation. -That's our insulation? | 0:36:13 | 0:36:18
-What have you got on board? -Insulation. -Insulation? For here? | 0:36:18 | 0:36:22
-The whole lorryload? -The whole lorryload. | 0:36:22 | 0:36:25
-Who's overdone it then? -So let me just check. | 0:36:25 | 0:36:28
You think he might have overdone the tarmac a little bit?! | 0:36:28 | 0:36:32
And that is the amount of insulation you've ordered for the house?! | 0:36:34 | 0:36:37
Luckily for you, I'm currently thinking about insulating my house at home! | 0:36:37 | 0:36:41
I might be able to help you out here. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:44
Now you mention it, I might do my house as well while I'm at it! | 0:36:44 | 0:36:48
You can't be serious. How many bales have you got on there? | 0:36:48 | 0:36:52
Oh, my God! | 0:36:52 | 0:36:54
-I know! -There's more on that side. -Yes. | 0:36:56 | 0:36:58
On the upside, at least it's only come from Stourbridge up the road. | 0:36:58 | 0:37:03
Poland. | 0:37:03 | 0:37:04
I think our eco-warrior needs to check his maths. | 0:37:08 | 0:37:12
Its 2.6 metres by five metres | 0:37:12 | 0:37:15
so we need 40 square metres, minus the six square metres. | 0:37:15 | 0:37:18
34 metres of the hemp stuff, which is 11 bales. | 0:37:18 | 0:37:22
That is 6.5 by three, which is 19.5, times two, which is 39. | 0:37:22 | 0:37:28
Divided by a half, which is about 80. | 0:37:28 | 0:37:31
Plus the 12, which is 92. | 0:37:31 | 0:37:34
So that's about four of the big bales and 11 bales of the hemp. | 0:37:34 | 0:37:40
If you'd like to take part in "Dodgy Maths Weekly", | 0:37:40 | 0:37:42
write in to the BBC and you can take part in next week's challenge. | 0:37:42 | 0:37:47
I know it seems insane, but it isn't. Can we get it off? | 0:37:47 | 0:37:52
'It is insane! It's insane! By anybody's standards, it's insane!' | 0:37:52 | 0:37:57
With tonnes of insulation lining the loft, a brand spanking new boiler and ten powerful radiators, | 0:37:59 | 0:38:04
this house is going to be seriously toasty. | 0:38:04 | 0:38:08
-Shall we have a quick tea break? -But not quite yet. | 0:38:08 | 0:38:11
We're emptying the site so that the boys can fill the central heating system up and listen for leaks. | 0:38:11 | 0:38:16
(You see, there's more than 300 metres of piping | 0:38:18 | 0:38:22
(running through this place and it only takes one leak to sink the whole ship.) | 0:38:22 | 0:38:26
Hold on, that doesn't look right. | 0:38:29 | 0:38:32
You can see a mark on the ceiling below so we've got a rough idea, | 0:38:32 | 0:38:35
because only a few of us have done the plumbing, | 0:38:35 | 0:38:38
so we know where we put all our pipework. | 0:38:38 | 0:38:40
There's only a certain amount of pipework that could be leaking. | 0:38:40 | 0:38:44
It's under the floor somewhere. | 0:38:44 | 0:38:46
All the floors are laid and all the carpets are laid down. | 0:38:46 | 0:38:49
I sniff disaster! | 0:38:49 | 0:38:51
Unfortunately, a dramatic problem calls for a dramatic solution. | 0:38:54 | 0:38:58
In a way, plumbing, if you've got a leak, you can see it. | 0:38:58 | 0:39:01
But electrics, if it's not running there, you don't know where it's broken. | 0:39:01 | 0:39:05
True, Billy, but normally when there's an issue with the electrics, | 0:39:05 | 0:39:08
we just work backwards from where you last were! | 0:39:08 | 0:39:12
It's best to pressurise the system, find out exactly where it's coming from | 0:39:12 | 0:39:16
and then drain the system quickly. | 0:39:16 | 0:39:19
-No-one's used the toilet, have they? -Oh, Christopher! | 0:39:19 | 0:39:22
We've got two teams of plumbers working on this and neither of them | 0:39:22 | 0:39:26
will want to be responsible for it, will they? | 0:39:26 | 0:39:29
-No. -Your honour, as a plumber is that your joints are right. | 0:39:29 | 0:39:32
-Without a doubt. -So what is it? -Can you see anything? | 0:39:32 | 0:39:35
-What is it? -A nail through the pipe. | 0:39:36 | 0:39:40
Skirting board nail through the pipe! | 0:39:40 | 0:39:42
-So it was nothing to do with the plumbers then? -No. | 0:39:42 | 0:39:45
-The plumbers' honour is intact. -See how happy he is about that? | 0:39:45 | 0:39:48
Not now, cos we've got to fix it. | 0:39:48 | 0:39:51
We've been doing these DIY SOS Big Builds for two years now | 0:39:57 | 0:40:00
and it never fails to amaze me how these things come together. | 0:40:00 | 0:40:03
But it's a fairly straightforward formula. | 0:40:03 | 0:40:05
Essentially, what you need is an ocean of goodwill | 0:40:05 | 0:40:08
and people who are prepared to work themselves to a standstill | 0:40:08 | 0:40:11
for ten days for no financial reward. | 0:40:11 | 0:40:13
Just for knowing that they've done something good for people who really deserve it. | 0:40:13 | 0:40:17
We will finish this over the next 24 hours, because we've got amazing people working on it. | 0:40:17 | 0:40:22
I never thought I'd say this, but hooray, it's raining! | 0:40:32 | 0:40:36
No, I'm not mad. It means the ground has finally started to thaw out | 0:40:36 | 0:40:40
and we can mix in some fresh topsoil. | 0:40:40 | 0:40:42
So how is it going to go? Have we got enough time left because this is the last run-in? | 0:40:42 | 0:40:47
-Have we got time to tidy this garden? -We've got a great plan. I reckon we're looking good. | 0:40:47 | 0:40:51
We should be hitting the turf about 2.00pm or 3.00pm, | 0:40:51 | 0:40:54
so we'll have the last couple of hours of daylight to put that down | 0:40:54 | 0:40:58
-and get it all flat. -All right. I'll leave you to it. | 0:40:58 | 0:41:01
Out front, Mark's driveway is a vision in black. | 0:41:10 | 0:41:14
-You must be very proud. -Proud? It's like I've had twins! | 0:41:14 | 0:41:18
That's the level of pride. | 0:41:18 | 0:41:20
They're a good looking bunch as well, aren't they? | 0:41:20 | 0:41:23
-They are. -Have you ever thought of doing a calendar, you guys? | 0:41:23 | 0:41:26
We tried a DIY SOS calendar once. | 0:41:29 | 0:41:32
Let's just say they weren't exactly bestsellers. | 0:41:32 | 0:41:36
It's a work of art. | 0:41:36 | 0:41:37
Our Black Country builders have been nothing less than immense. | 0:41:39 | 0:41:43
Now it's just the spit, polish and finishing touches to go. | 0:41:43 | 0:41:47
-It's going to look good, isn't it? -It's going to look great. | 0:41:47 | 0:41:50
-It's quite a change around. -I can't wait to see it on the reveal. | 0:41:50 | 0:41:53
I can't believe the difference from the first day, | 0:41:53 | 0:41:56
when you came in and saw the state that everything was in. | 0:41:56 | 0:41:59
You turned up two days before you put the carpets down to take measurements | 0:41:59 | 0:42:03
-and I could see you thinking... -This isn't going to be ready. It's amazing. | 0:42:03 | 0:42:06
It's amazing how they've managed to do it in the time. | 0:42:06 | 0:42:09
And incredibly, (DUDLEY ACCENT) done it in time we have. | 0:42:09 | 0:42:13
Just nine days ago, we arrived | 0:42:20 | 0:42:22
to find a family, not only battling Fragile X syndrome, but living | 0:42:22 | 0:42:26
in a dark, cold and cramped building site. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:29
With no money left, and no way out, | 0:42:29 | 0:42:31
Wayne and Joanne were exhausted and desperate for help. | 0:42:31 | 0:42:35
By trying to make it better for the kiddies, it seems as if we've made it worse. | 0:42:35 | 0:42:40
Jack...he doesn't really want to come home. | 0:42:40 | 0:42:44
It's probably my fault as well, because I couldn't finish it myself. | 0:42:44 | 0:42:48
And, I wish I could. | 0:42:49 | 0:42:52
When we asked the question, | 0:42:54 | 0:42:55
an army of local trades put their hands up, | 0:42:55 | 0:42:58
donating over 4,000 man-hours | 0:42:58 | 0:43:00
to give the family a home they'd want to come back to. | 0:43:00 | 0:43:04
Together, we've demolished the old dark and cluttered kitchen. | 0:43:10 | 0:43:15
Knocking through into the extension, | 0:43:15 | 0:43:16
to create a huge open-plan living space. | 0:43:16 | 0:43:20
The large family dining area | 0:43:21 | 0:43:23
leads into an open and light, modern kitchen, | 0:43:23 | 0:43:26
complete with the appliances | 0:43:26 | 0:43:28
and surface areas they were so lacking. | 0:43:28 | 0:43:30
The slate-floored utility room | 0:43:33 | 0:43:35
is equipped with plenty of storage space | 0:43:35 | 0:43:37
and a downstairs toilet will come in useful | 0:43:37 | 0:43:40
when Jack starts potty training again. | 0:43:40 | 0:43:42
Upstairs, we've taken out the old bathroom | 0:43:44 | 0:43:47
to create a huge landing area | 0:43:47 | 0:43:48
that gives the whole space a central focus | 0:43:48 | 0:43:51
and I've got to admit, makes the house feel massive! | 0:43:51 | 0:43:54
With Charlie's raised lintel, | 0:43:57 | 0:43:58
the extension now feels part of the old house | 0:43:58 | 0:44:01
and leads to two bedrooms, giving Jack and Ginny | 0:44:01 | 0:44:04
the separate spaces they need to have a good night's sleep | 0:44:04 | 0:44:08
and develop at their own rates. | 0:44:08 | 0:44:11
After years of living in the smallest room, | 0:44:11 | 0:44:13
Katie finally has the large and luxurious adult space she so deserves. | 0:44:13 | 0:44:17
Somewhere she can retreat to and make her own. | 0:44:17 | 0:44:20
There's a new master bathroom, | 0:44:22 | 0:44:24
complete with waterfall taps that should keep Jack happy. | 0:44:24 | 0:44:27
And Joanne and Wayne have a new plush bedroom, | 0:44:30 | 0:44:33
transformed from the cramped room Jack and Ginny once shared. | 0:44:33 | 0:44:38
We've even managed to fit in an ensuite bathroom, | 0:44:38 | 0:44:41
making the morning and evening ritual much easier | 0:44:41 | 0:44:44
for all five of them. | 0:44:44 | 0:44:45
Finally, the back garden has been transformed | 0:44:46 | 0:44:49
from the mud pit it once was, | 0:44:49 | 0:44:51
into a stunning low-maintenance garden, | 0:44:51 | 0:44:53
where the kids can safely burn off some energy. | 0:44:53 | 0:44:57
There's a large decked area | 0:44:57 | 0:44:59
and a safe water feature that Jack can play with | 0:44:59 | 0:45:02
in plain sight from the kitchen. | 0:45:02 | 0:45:04
Giving him a sense of, what was it again? | 0:45:04 | 0:45:07
Agency? | 0:45:07 | 0:45:09
16 months after they started, | 0:45:11 | 0:45:14
the build is finally finished. | 0:45:14 | 0:45:16
Wayne can now reclaim his life with Joanne and the children | 0:45:16 | 0:45:19
in a home they'll want to come back to. | 0:45:19 | 0:45:21
Joanne's brother Andy knows better than anyone | 0:45:21 | 0:45:25
how much this will mean to them. | 0:45:25 | 0:45:28
My sister's very, very emotional. | 0:45:28 | 0:45:31
So, if I can just pre-warn Worcester and Hereford, | 0:45:31 | 0:45:33
you're going to be flooded. | 0:45:33 | 0:45:36
Well before the bad weather kicks in, because she...honestly. | 0:45:36 | 0:45:39
When she opens that door, when it's all done, | 0:45:39 | 0:45:41
she walks into there, she'll cry. | 0:45:41 | 0:45:44
This is going to be immense for her. It really is going to be immense. | 0:45:44 | 0:45:48
What was wrong with your house? | 0:45:52 | 0:45:54
It was awful. | 0:45:54 | 0:45:56
I don't think we could ever have finished it. It was horrible. | 0:45:56 | 0:45:59
-What we hoping for? -Just a home. -Just normal. | 0:45:59 | 0:46:03
Comfy, for the kids, not to walk on cold floors and things like that. | 0:46:03 | 0:46:08
For Jack to want to come home as well and Ginny. | 0:46:08 | 0:46:10
I hope we've given you what you needed. | 0:46:10 | 0:46:14
Open your eyes. | 0:46:14 | 0:46:16
Thank you. | 0:46:23 | 0:46:24
It's not my house! | 0:46:25 | 0:46:27
No, it is! That's the cool thing! | 0:46:28 | 0:46:30
-Do you like it? -Yeah. | 0:46:35 | 0:46:38
-Brilliant. -Do you know where you are? -No. | 0:46:39 | 0:46:43
-Thanks. -Thank you. | 0:46:43 | 0:46:46
So we took out the wall between what was the old kitchen... | 0:46:46 | 0:46:50
This is your extension, basically. | 0:46:50 | 0:46:53
-Oh, God! -A new kitchen. | 0:46:53 | 0:46:55
I know. It's lovely. Eventually. | 0:46:55 | 0:46:58
Good grief! | 0:46:58 | 0:47:00
Oh, Nick, it's fantastic, honestly. | 0:47:02 | 0:47:04
-Brilliant. -I don't think I'm going to stop now. | 0:47:04 | 0:47:07
Is this the kind of family area that you were hoping for? | 0:47:07 | 0:47:10
-And more! -Nothing like this. | 0:47:10 | 0:47:12
-We could never have done this. -Never. | 0:47:12 | 0:47:13
I'd never have imagined in a million years it would look like this. | 0:47:13 | 0:47:16
Honestly, it's absolutely fantastic. | 0:47:16 | 0:47:19
It's absolutely perfect. | 0:47:19 | 0:47:20
-You haven't found a washing machine or tumble-dryer yet. -No. | 0:47:20 | 0:47:24
Well, come through this way. | 0:47:24 | 0:47:26
Oh, d...! | 0:47:28 | 0:47:30
Oh! Oh, my...! | 0:47:30 | 0:47:32
Oh! | 0:47:32 | 0:47:35 | |
SHE SOBS: Thank you so much, Nick! | 0:47:35 | 0:47:38
It's funny, a lot of people will be wondering why you're so emotional | 0:47:39 | 0:47:42
about a utility room and a downstairs loo, but it makes | 0:47:42 | 0:47:44
-a big difference, doesn't it? -Yeah. | 0:47:44 | 0:47:46
-So, you've got a moppable floor. -Yeah. | 0:47:46 | 0:47:48
-Having the extra sink in here is great... -Yeah. | 0:47:48 | 0:47:50
-..but Jack loves to play with water. -Ooh, yeah. | 0:47:50 | 0:47:53
-That can be his own sink. -It can. | 0:47:53 | 0:47:55
-He can make as much mess as he wants, you can mop it up. -Yeah. | 0:47:55 | 0:47:58
Also, we wanted to somehow get a downstairs loo in for Jack as well. | 0:47:58 | 0:48:01
-Oh, yeah. -It's not about just looking good, | 0:48:01 | 0:48:04
it has to work for you, | 0:48:04 | 0:48:05
it has to make your lives easier and more comfortable. | 0:48:05 | 0:48:08
It's fantastic. | 0:48:08 | 0:48:11
-So, it's a new staircase, as you can see. -Oh, God. | 0:48:17 | 0:48:20
Out of this world. | 0:48:23 | 0:48:25
Oh, God! | 0:48:27 | 0:48:29
It's lovely, it's absolutely brilliant. | 0:48:33 | 0:48:36
It's huge! The kids could play...on the landing! | 0:48:36 | 0:48:40
Oh, my life! | 0:48:45 | 0:48:47
-Fantastic, isn't it? Lovely, modern toilet. -I know! | 0:48:48 | 0:48:51
Fantastic new bathroom. | 0:48:51 | 0:48:53
And really beautiful taps on this, | 0:48:53 | 0:48:55
with a waterfall jet, so whenever there's water, | 0:48:55 | 0:48:58
-and you want to put Jack in the bath or something... -Yeah. | 0:48:58 | 0:49:02
..try and make it as interesting as possible. | 0:49:02 | 0:49:04
-So you'll see that the... -Oh, he'll love that. | 0:49:04 | 0:49:06
-So you get like a waterfall tap. -He'll love that! | 0:49:06 | 0:49:09
And the same on this one. | 0:49:09 | 0:49:12
God, he's going to absolutely love that. | 0:49:13 | 0:49:16
JOANNE SOBS | 0:49:17 | 0:49:20
Thank you so much. | 0:49:20 | 0:49:22
Oh! | 0:49:24 | 0:49:26 | |
Oh! | 0:49:27 | 0:49:29 | |
So, in order of rooms, which way round shall we do this? | 0:49:30 | 0:49:34
-Shall we start with Jack's? -Yeah, and Ginny's, yeah, | 0:49:34 | 0:49:36
-Jack's first, yeah. -All right. | 0:49:36 | 0:49:38
I'm not bothered about mine, really, as long as they... | 0:49:38 | 0:49:41
Well, to be honest, we tidied yours up a bit, that was all we could do. | 0:49:41 | 0:49:44
Jack's is through this way - would you like to go and have a look? | 0:49:44 | 0:49:47
-Yeah. -Go on, on you go. | 0:49:47 | 0:49:49
It's great. | 0:49:56 | 0:49:58
-It is. Lovely. -Proper boy's room, this is, this is lovely. -Yeah. | 0:49:59 | 0:50:04
-Oh, he's going to love it. -He is. | 0:50:04 | 0:50:06
-Look at it! -Bed's massive! | 0:50:06 | 0:50:08
-Oh, he's going to absolutely love this. -Yeah. | 0:50:09 | 0:50:13
-It's just the job. -Just right for him. -It is, isn't it? | 0:50:13 | 0:50:16
Ho-ho! | 0:50:19 | 0:50:20
-Oh, our Ginny's going to love this. -She will love this. | 0:50:22 | 0:50:25
-Oh! -It's ace. | 0:50:26 | 0:50:28
Well, the old room was just cold and... | 0:50:28 | 0:50:32
It was horrible, wasn't it, Wayne? | 0:50:32 | 0:50:34
-They're going to absolutely love this. -Yeah. | 0:50:34 | 0:50:36
I can't wait to see their faces when they see it. | 0:50:36 | 0:50:39
-You're sure we've got the kids' rooms right? -Absolutely spot-on. | 0:50:39 | 0:50:42
-Right, the next room - that's a bit different, isn't it? -Yeah. | 0:50:42 | 0:50:45
We need something a bit more... elegant, really. | 0:50:45 | 0:50:48
Want to go and see that one? Ready? | 0:50:48 | 0:50:50
-How many rooms have we got now, Wayne! -THEY LAUGH | 0:50:53 | 0:50:56
JOANNE SNIFFLES | 0:51:03 | 0:51:05
Oh! | 0:51:05 | 0:51:07 | |
-Oh, thank you so much, honestly! -Thank you. | 0:51:09 | 0:51:12
It's absolutely beautiful. | 0:51:12 | 0:51:14
And I always wanted bedside tables with lamps on - always. | 0:51:14 | 0:51:17
But they're not yours! | 0:51:17 | 0:51:20
-This is Katie's! -Is this Katie's room?! | 0:51:20 | 0:51:22
-Katie's room?! -No way! -This Katie's room! | 0:51:22 | 0:51:24
I thought it was our room! | 0:51:24 | 0:51:26
-This is Kate's room! -Yeah! | 0:51:26 | 0:51:28
-Oh! -I told you, we couldn't get round to yours, we had too much on! | 0:51:28 | 0:51:31
Despite the fact she's growing up now, | 0:51:31 | 0:51:33
she's always been your little princess, hasn't she? | 0:51:33 | 0:51:36
-I know you wanted her to have a beautiful room. -She will love it. | 0:51:36 | 0:51:39
Well, that leaves just one room, then, doesn't it? | 0:51:39 | 0:51:42
We've tidied it up a bit, but it means you end up in the back corner. | 0:51:42 | 0:51:45
-Yeah. -Is that all right? -Yeah. -You want to come and have a look? -Yeah. | 0:51:45 | 0:51:48
Oh, my...! | 0:51:55 | 0:51:58
Brilliant. | 0:52:00 | 0:52:01
This ain't my room. | 0:52:01 | 0:52:03
Mine was magnolia and...! | 0:52:03 | 0:52:05
Plenty of wardrobe space. | 0:52:07 | 0:52:08
-Pretty bed... -I love it. I love the colours, everything. | 0:52:08 | 0:52:12
-I absolutely love it, absolutely love it. -Yeah! | 0:52:12 | 0:52:15
It's absolutely beautiful, Nick - really, really, beautiful. | 0:52:15 | 0:52:19
-That's your cupboard door over there, isn't it? -Yeah - | 0:52:20 | 0:52:23
-the old cubby-hole. -Have a look, because we've made it a bit bigger. | 0:52:23 | 0:52:26
I'm frightened to look. | 0:52:26 | 0:52:28
Oh, my god, we've got an en suite! | 0:52:30 | 0:52:32
JOANNE GASPS | 0:52:33 | 0:52:35
It's absolutely brilliant. | 0:52:37 | 0:52:39
We thought it was really important to have separate bathrooms. | 0:52:39 | 0:52:42
-Jack likes to play in the bathroom for a long time... -Yeah. | 0:52:42 | 0:52:45
..so if you need to get to work or anything else is going on, | 0:52:45 | 0:52:48
-and you can't get into the bathroom because Jack's in there... -Yeah. | 0:52:48 | 0:52:51
..you need somewhere else, and the whole purpose of the house, | 0:52:51 | 0:52:54
and the design of it, is to make it work for you, | 0:52:54 | 0:52:57
dealing with everything you have to deal with every day. | 0:52:57 | 0:53:00
So we're hoping... | 0:53:00 | 0:53:02
-that this is going to make life a little easier. -Yeah. | 0:53:02 | 0:53:05
It's fantastic. | 0:53:05 | 0:53:06
I think it's just unbelievable - unbelievable. | 0:53:11 | 0:53:14
-You've just changed everything - it's not our house. -No. | 0:53:14 | 0:53:17
It'll take us a while to adjust | 0:53:17 | 0:53:19
and... Because we'll just keep walking round this house... | 0:53:19 | 0:53:22
-Not thinking it's ours. -Yeah. | 0:53:22 | 0:53:24
-Thinking we've got to give it you back! -Yeah, yeah. | 0:53:24 | 0:53:27
somebody's going to come and say, | 0:53:27 | 0:53:29
-"No, you've got to go back to how you was." -Mmm. | 0:53:29 | 0:53:32
-It's unbelievable. -And the kiddies... | 0:53:33 | 0:53:36
And our Kate... | 0:53:37 | 0:53:39
Our Kate - I can't wait to see her face. | 0:53:40 | 0:53:43
KATE GASPS | 0:53:49 | 0:53:51
Oh, my God! | 0:53:51 | 0:53:53
Ain't it lovely, babe? | 0:53:57 | 0:53:59
KATE SOBS | 0:53:59 | 0:54:02
Oh, my God! | 0:54:03 | 0:54:05
I would never have imagined it like this. | 0:54:07 | 0:54:10
Oh... | 0:54:10 | 0:54:12 | |
Are you happy, babe? | 0:54:12 | 0:54:13
Aw! | 0:54:13 | 0:54:15 | |
It's lovely. | 0:54:16 | 0:54:18
It's beautiful. | 0:54:20 | 0:54:21
-Really nice. -We'll never see you now. | 0:54:21 | 0:54:23
No! THEY LAUGH | 0:54:23 | 0:54:25
Jo - why don't you tell her why she deserves a room like this? | 0:54:25 | 0:54:28
She's lovely. And I love her to bits. | 0:54:28 | 0:54:31
There's a lot of times you've needed me, | 0:54:31 | 0:54:34
and I haven't been able to... see to Katie. | 0:54:34 | 0:54:37
There's times I've been on the phone and I'll.. | 0:54:37 | 0:54:41
And I have been...down, | 0:54:43 | 0:54:45
-and I'm sorry, Katie. -That's all right. | 0:54:45 | 0:54:48
But, erm, you really deserve this, you're a good kid. | 0:54:49 | 0:54:51
-And you do as well. -I love you to bits. | 0:54:51 | 0:54:54
I do. | 0:54:54 | 0:54:55 | |
Wow! | 0:55:00 | 0:55:02 | |
-Huh! -What do you reckon? -Wow! | 0:55:02 | 0:55:04
It's nice! | 0:55:04 | 0:55:06
-It's really comfortable. -Do you like this seat that they've done for you? | 0:55:06 | 0:55:10
Yeah. | 0:55:10 | 0:55:12 | |
-I love the bed as well. -Do you? | 0:55:12 | 0:55:14
Yeah. | 0:55:14 | 0:55:16 | |

and in every street in the country, | 0:58:17 | 0:58:19
there will be a family struggling to get by, like this family. | 0:58:19 | 0:58:21
And we all think something should be done about it. | 0:58:21 | 0:58:24
But whilst we're waiting for somebody else to do something, | 0:58:24 | 0:58:27
we could do something ourselves, like these people. | 0:58:27 | 0:58:29
They've come out and given up time to change a family's life. | 0:58:29 | 0:58:32
