Last year, Paul and Sarah decided to extend their house | 0:00:02 | 0:00:06
so their children, Jess and Josh could both have a room of their own. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:11
But the week after they dug the foundations, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
Josh started to complain of stomach pains. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
I remember walking up the road with him and saying, "Come on, Josh. There's nothing wrong with you." | 0:00:16 | 0:00:21
Typical dad. A week later he was laying in a bed, desperately ill. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:25
Right up until that last moment, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
I never suspected that it would be cancer. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:31
Cancer so severe that Josh needed a liver transplant | 0:00:31 | 0:00:35
and now he's going to need a lot of care for the rest of his life. | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
You're helpless. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:40
If you could take the pain away from him... It's just horrible. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:44
If you could make everything better, what would be the first thing on your list? | 0:00:44 | 0:00:48
To make our family normal again. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
And just be happy. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
'And to do that, this house needs to become a home that will help the family face the future together.' | 0:00:55 | 0:01:02
-What makes you happy? -Going home. -Going home makes you happy? | 0:01:02 | 0:01:07
Home is so important. I want them to feel safe and loved and warm. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:12
And that's where we come in. With the support of local trades, we're going to try | 0:01:16 | 0:01:21
and give this family the space they need to help Josh get better. | 0:01:21 | 0:01:26
We've got just nine days to get the job done. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
We need an army of builders who know what they're doing. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
That's handy. I'm glad you're here. | 0:01:31 | 0:01:34
-Can you tell us where we can find an army of builders who know what they're doing? -ALL: No! | 0:01:34 | 0:01:39
I guess we'll have to make do with this lot. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
This is DIY SOS, The Big Build. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
Last spring, Paul and Sarah started to extend their cramped bungalow in Duxford near Cambridge. | 0:01:54 | 0:02:01
Their son Josh was growing up fast. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
It seems such a long time ago now. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
He had football tournaments, and I just thought to myself, | 0:02:06 | 0:02:12
"He's just lost his little spark." | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
The next week, he was sent home from school poorly, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:20
with just a tummy ache and it was just a very, very gradual decline | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
until that last week when his pain was just uncontrollable. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:31
Ultrasound tests revealed a lump in Josh's liver. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
The doctor never said it will be all right. Don't worry. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
And I know that's.... I know the drill. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:43
Sarah knew the drill because she's an oncology nurse, working with cancer patients every day. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:50
Josh was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a very rare and aggressive form of liver cancer. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:59
Three painful sessions of chemotherapy were followed by a successful liver transplant. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:06
But Josh's condition still has a huge impact on his life. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:12
Josh can't do anything really. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:16
So he just stays in bed and watches TV. | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
A horrible moment. We were with some friends of ours and he had a pump on | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
and a little rucksack and he has his feed that was 24 hours a day, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
and they've got one of these trampolines in their back garden | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
and his three little friends were jumping around in there and there was Josh sat on the side. Hard. | 0:03:31 | 0:03:37
Josh's life has changed beyond recognition, | 0:03:37 | 0:03:41
putting huge demands on the family's small and cramped bungalow. | 0:03:41 | 0:03:45
We have to give him about 12 drugs a day, so his body accepts his liver. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:50
But he's on other drugs as well to help him because his immune system is suppressed, | 0:03:50 | 0:03:55
he is at risk of infection, so we give him anti-viral drugs, | 0:03:55 | 0:03:59
just to hopefully safeguard him against any infection. | 0:03:59 | 0:04:03
All right Josh, take your medicines, darling? | 0:04:05 | 0:04:08
'It's the responsibility, it's all on my shoulders. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
'And because I'm a nurse, it is a control thing as well.' | 0:04:12 | 0:04:16
But then you shouldn't be doing that with your son. Your own son. It's really hard. | 0:04:17 | 0:04:22
With no room in the house, those drugs have got to go somewhere. | 0:04:22 | 0:04:27
In here we've got all his nutrient milk, | 0:04:28 | 0:04:32
they call it, which is basically pumped into his stomach via a line. | 0:04:32 | 0:04:37
Its job is to maintain his weight. | 0:04:37 | 0:04:40
As well as needing more space to store Josh's medicines, the family urgently need another bedroom. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:46
Jess and Josh have always shared a room, but now that puts Josh at greater risk of picking up | 0:04:46 | 0:04:51
an infection that could make him seriously ill. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:55
I don't want to be poorly because I don't... | 0:04:55 | 0:04:57
Cos it's harder to share a room when Josh's poorly. | 0:04:57 | 0:05:01
In the night, his pump beeps when I try to get to sleep. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:06
But if I've got a cold or something, I can't go near Josh. | 0:05:06 | 0:05:10
It's really hard. | 0:05:10 | 0:05:13
By any measure, this family has been through the mill. | 0:05:13 | 0:05:16
We're going to try and give them a home which will help them cope with whatever comes next. | 0:05:16 | 0:05:22
What about you two? Let's find out about a bit out about you first. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:26
Jessica, what sort of things do you do in your spare time? | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
-I like drawing. -Are you a member of any clubs or anything? -Cubs. | 0:05:29 | 0:05:34
You're in the Cubs? What about you? | 0:05:34 | 0:05:38
You're a bit busy, going backwards and forwards to the hospital. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:41
-I like sports. -What's your favourite sport? -Anything with a ball. -OK. | 0:05:41 | 0:05:47
-Let's find out what you want. What do you need? -Storage. Josh's medicines and his equipment | 0:05:47 | 0:05:52
take up most of the kitchen and Josh and Jessica can't share a bedroom | 0:05:52 | 0:05:57
because of Josh's condition anyway, but she's going to be ten next year | 0:05:57 | 0:06:01
so somewhere for her to just go and gather her thoughts. | 0:06:01 | 0:06:06
It strikes me that you're sort of getting to the end of your tether a little bit. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:10
I am. I am. | 0:06:10 | 0:06:12
I'm tired. I just want to be their mum. | 0:06:13 | 0:06:18
And it's been really hard. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:23
I can see how it would get to you as well. We'll try and give you the best possible house that we can. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:28
There's nothing to pack now because it's an empty house. | 0:06:28 | 0:06:32
-Where is it all? -At the dump. -At the dump?! | 0:06:32 | 0:06:36
-THEY LAUGH -You're not supposed to say that! | 0:06:36 | 0:06:39
Kids, you can't trust them to come up with the right story, can you? | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
So it's goodbye to the family, hello, trades people. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:48
It's freezing cold and it's nearly the shortest day of the year. | 0:06:48 | 0:06:52
But the support were getting is amazing. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:55
Who's in charge? THEY LAUGH | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
So Billy's here and so is the rest of the team, eventually. | 0:07:00 | 0:07:05
-What kind you call this? -Ten o'clock. -Quarter two. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:09
-What? -Quarter to your supposed to be here. -No. Ten o'clock. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:13
I said I'd probably be early so try and make it. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:16
As long as we're taking the casual attitude towards this job. | 0:07:16 | 0:07:20
-I called, the director said ten o'clock. -Don't you worry about it. -I'm not worried about it. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:25
Get out of the van. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:28
Honestly, I hope they show our new designer a little more respect. | 0:07:32 | 0:07:36
Gabrielle Blackman has worked on many big builds, collaborating with the other designers. | 0:07:36 | 0:07:41
This week, she steps into the spotlight. Gabrielle's portfolio contains some incredible work. | 0:07:41 | 0:07:47
If your yacht needs a revamp like this, she's your woman, but she is just as good at designing homes | 0:07:47 | 0:07:53
that really work for the people that live in them. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
It's got to be what they want because there's no point | 0:07:56 | 0:08:00
in all of these lovely trades doing all this work and then me putting something stupid | 0:08:00 | 0:08:04
and controversial in that they won't like. | 0:08:04 | 0:08:07
The only thing we don't want is white, glossy minimalist, | 0:08:07 | 0:08:11
is not them at all. They want a cosy family home. | 0:08:11 | 0:08:14
Why do you think they don't want white glossy? | 0:08:14 | 0:08:17
We don't want anything to do with hospital in this house. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
I just want it to be a cosy home and nothing that feels clinical or cold. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:26
-We're not going to have any of that. -That's a very good point. | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
I was just about to explain that we call Gabrielle "Gabriel", | 0:08:30 | 0:08:34
-when you would think it would be "Gabri-elle". -Gabi is fine. | 0:08:34 | 0:08:39
I've even got it written on my hat. I've given up now. | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
Why did your parents call you "Gabriel" rather than "Gabri-elle"? | 0:08:42 | 0:08:46
-I don't know. It's cos... Yeah, an angel thing. -Gabriel the Angel? | 0:08:46 | 0:08:52
She's a little angel. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
Aw! Here's Gabrielle's heavenly plan. At the front of the house, | 0:08:55 | 0:08:59
a new wall will give Jess that much-needed room of her own. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:03
That will make the living room smaller, so we're moving another wall to make up for it, | 0:09:03 | 0:09:08
and adding a window, creating a cosy haven for the family to relax in. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:12
At the back comes the big change. | 0:09:12 | 0:09:15
We're adding a kitchen diner where the family can be together. | 0:09:15 | 0:09:19
Where the kitchen was, it will be a utility room | 0:09:19 | 0:09:23
with lots of storage for all Josh's medical staff. | 0:09:23 | 0:09:26
Finally a small extension to Sarah and Paul's room will add more space | 0:09:26 | 0:09:30
and an en suite. | 0:09:30 | 0:09:33
And Gabrielle spoke unto them and said, "Knock those walls down." | 0:09:35 | 0:09:39
And Lo! It came to pass. | 0:09:39 | 0:09:42
We've started at breakneck pace but I've always got time to say hello to a fan. | 0:09:46 | 0:09:52
-New motor, is it? -It's for my wife. She's a big fan of yours, Tony. | 0:09:52 | 0:09:57
Tony?! | 0:09:57 | 0:09:59
Tony Knowles. | 0:09:59 | 0:10:00
THEY LAUGH | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
That's nice(!) You think you've built a career, eh? | 0:10:02 | 0:10:05
This pile of wood is the shell of the new extension. | 0:10:05 | 0:10:08
When I was a lad, extensions took weeks to build. Not any more. | 0:10:08 | 0:10:12
-How fast is this going to go up and get together? -We hope to finish this today. -Really? | 0:10:12 | 0:10:17
-Not including the roof bit? -Yes. | 0:10:17 | 0:10:20
-Including the roof joists where we're cutting into this? -If we get a good run of it, yes. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:24
As long as we stop interrupting you, basically. All right, fair enough. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:27
Just hours in and were making real progress | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
but every chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Oh, here we go. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:35
Let me ask you a question. What's in there? | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
That's the bathroom. We're not supposed to go in there. | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
Who drilled into the wall into the new bathroom and broke the tiles? | 0:10:42 | 0:10:45
That was so unlucky. I was that far out of being lucky. | 0:10:45 | 0:10:50
-But you weren't. -I weren't, I was unlucky. | 0:10:50 | 0:10:53
You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs, son. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:58
It's a hell of an omelette when you're around. | 0:10:58 | 0:11:01
Thankfully, there's plenty of people on site that do know what they're doing. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:06
43 on day one alone, all giving us their time, skill and support. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:11
You can be round the corner and not know what trauma some families go through. | 0:11:11 | 0:11:15
People are here for a good cause as opposed to earning a living. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:20
It's hard out there and people have come in. It's like a breath of fresh air. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:24
It's great. | 0:11:24 | 0:11:27
Great laugh, good people and it will be great just to see them happy at the end of it. | 0:11:27 | 0:11:32
Why did you decide to come and join in and help out? | 0:11:32 | 0:11:36
You could have been somewhere else earning a lot more money. | 0:11:36 | 0:11:39
I could have been but I found out the little boy had liver cancer. | 0:11:39 | 0:11:42
I've just finished a course of chemotherapy for cancer. | 0:11:42 | 0:11:46
-Oh, have you? -I have. So I know how important it is to get help. | 0:11:46 | 0:11:50
How are you doing now? | 0:11:50 | 0:11:53
-Yeah, still waiting for the final results but everything's looking good. It's all positive. -Good. | 0:11:53 | 0:11:58
-You understand the need for a clean and tidy home. -Absolutely. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:01
-A safe environment. -I do, yeah. | 0:12:01 | 0:12:03
-But you're happy to come along and help out. -More than happy. Yeah. | 0:12:03 | 0:12:07
-Thanks very much. -Wouldn't have it any other way. -Really appreciate it. | 0:12:07 | 0:12:11
'Aren't people amazing? | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
'We've been here a few hours, but already I've noticed something. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:17
'If you stand on this scaffold long enough, something unusual will fly over. | 0:12:17 | 0:12:22
'It's probably on its way to land at one of Josh's favourite places, | 0:12:22 | 0:12:26
'the Imperial War Museum's plane collection. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:29
'He loves walking around here. Look around, you can see why.' | 0:12:29 | 0:12:33
I hear you've been back into hospital again. How did it go? | 0:12:33 | 0:12:38
-I had to have a needle in my leg. -Did you? I bet that's not very nice. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:44
-No. -How did he manage yesterday? | 0:12:44 | 0:12:48
He wasn't too bad, but you know that he's really frightened | 0:12:48 | 0:12:52
because his blood pressure went through the roof. | 0:12:52 | 0:12:55
They had try and let him calm down a little bit and leave him | 0:12:55 | 0:12:58
until he could calm down and then they put the needle in there. | 0:12:58 | 0:13:02
Basically so he can have an injection in his leg | 0:13:02 | 0:13:06
over the next few days to lift his blood count. | 0:13:06 | 0:13:10
-How are you feeling now? -Fine. -Fine? -Yes. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:14
When do you feel unwell then? | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
When I've had chemo and sometimes when I've had anti-sickness drugs. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:25
How does it make you feel? | 0:13:25 | 0:13:29
A bit tired and worried. | 0:13:29 | 0:13:33
-What makes you happy? -Going home. | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
Going home makes you happy? | 0:13:36 | 0:13:38
I suppose you have do spend a long time at the hospital. | 0:13:38 | 0:13:42
-Yes. -How much do you look forward to going home? -A lot. | 0:13:42 | 0:13:48
-What part of your house do you like the best? -My bedroom. -Do you? | 0:13:48 | 0:13:52
-Even though you have to share it? -Yes. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:55
-Would you like to have a bedroom all of your own? -Yes. -Why would that be cool? | 0:13:55 | 0:13:59
-So I get some peace and I can play with my toys a bit more. -Right. | 0:13:59 | 0:14:05
I can see how that would work. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:08
-Anything less than that and we are in trouble? -Yes! | 0:14:08 | 0:14:12
'Well, we'd better get on with it then. Wow! That really is getting on with it. | 0:14:18 | 0:14:22
'We all know that when it gets dark, scary things come out to play.' | 0:14:22 | 0:14:26
There was nothing here this morning. | 0:14:26 | 0:14:29
This is day one of the job and we actually didn't start building | 0:14:29 | 0:14:33
until nearly 10:30, 11 o'clock this morning. | 0:14:33 | 0:14:36
So really, they've put a timber frame extension up, | 0:14:36 | 0:14:39
two-thirds of the way through the roof. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:42
The flat roof's gone on over there. I tell you what, this is a seriously good team. | 0:14:42 | 0:14:47
It's like having a gargoyle on the roof, isn't it? | 0:14:47 | 0:14:52
So, outside, it's all about what's gone up. | 0:14:52 | 0:14:55
Inside, it's all about what's come down. | 0:14:55 | 0:14:59
Most of the walls by the look of it. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
It may seem scary but it's all part of the plan. Well, they say it's all part of the plan(!) | 0:15:02 | 0:15:08
Ladies and gentlemen, for your entertainment, God Save The Queen played on a saw. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:14
HE PLAYS GOD SAVE THE QUEEN | 0:15:14 | 0:15:18
HE CONTINUES PLAYING | 0:15:26 | 0:15:29
Genius! If you think that's good, you should see what he can do with a hammer. | 0:15:37 | 0:15:42
Day two and the brickies have arrived. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:50
We're adding a lot of space but most rooms will still be quite small. | 0:15:50 | 0:15:53
In the lounge, Gabrielle has to find room for a fire, a sofa and one of her pet hates. | 0:15:53 | 0:15:59
Designers don't really like TVs because they don't look very nice. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:03
It's not a very attractive thing to have in the sitting room. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:07
It's so important in this house, particularly for Josh. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:11
Part of him getting better and recuperating is that he needs | 0:16:11 | 0:16:14
to be comfortable and I can see him lying on the sofa here, | 0:16:14 | 0:16:18
watching the TV, and it's really important that all works, | 0:16:18 | 0:16:21
the room still looks... this lovely, elegant sitting-room that Sarah wants. | 0:16:21 | 0:16:26
We're just trying to make that happen. | 0:16:26 | 0:16:28
You need to make it happen fast | 0:16:28 | 0:16:30
because the plasterers are chomping at the bit. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:33
We want to chase these door linings up. Get the door linings on. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:37
And then we've got two rooms we can skim this afternoon. | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
We're catching everyone up. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
Up on the scaffold, two roofs are about to be made one. | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
We're ready to get the roof done, | 0:16:48 | 0:16:51
trying to get it covered in because it looks fine now, | 0:16:51 | 0:16:54
but it was raining earlier, so we can't take any chances. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:58
Down below, Jules has solved some problems I don't quite understand. | 0:16:58 | 0:17:02
He got us out of a large problem there. | 0:17:11 | 0:17:14
'Aw, that's better. | 0:17:18 | 0:17:20
'Everyone needs a hug now and again and I mean everyone.' | 0:17:20 | 0:17:26
You now. Aw! | 0:17:26 | 0:17:28
It's working for me. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:32
-I feel better now. -Do you feel better? -I feel better now. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:37
-Ah, lovely. How does that feel? -Yeah, it's nice. -Where's his hand? | 0:17:44 | 0:17:49
Get off! | 0:17:49 | 0:17:51
When Josh became ill, Sarah knew that both her children were going to need a lot of support. | 0:17:56 | 0:18:01
She knew that both her and Paul would be away for months | 0:18:04 | 0:18:07
while Josh was in hospital, so she asked her three best friends, | 0:18:07 | 0:18:12
Helen, Lara and Julia to get together and look after Jess. | 0:18:12 | 0:18:17
She went in to organise mode and said this is what I would like. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:21
She spoke to all of us individually. Got us all together. | 0:18:21 | 0:18:25
That's a lot of trust and an amazing friendship, that she could come to you with something so important. | 0:18:25 | 0:18:30
-I think she knew it wouldn't be an issue. -It wasn't an issue. | 0:18:30 | 0:18:33
There was no second thought. It was just absolutely fine. | 0:18:33 | 0:18:37
But it also made us feel that we were doing some good. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:41
-Something to help. -Something to help. You feel helpless. | 0:18:41 | 0:18:45
You know that they're in hospital, to know that they're doing something, she could go there | 0:18:45 | 0:18:50
and not worry about Jessica, because she was OK and she was with us. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:55
-It helped us too. -When I was talking to her the other day, | 0:18:55 | 0:18:59
I was watching her and I said, "You're pretty near the end of your tether" and she said, "Yes, I am." | 0:18:59 | 0:19:05
She stayed with us last week. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:09
I think she's ready for that end and the end of the chemo | 0:19:09 | 0:19:14
and just really start looking ahead and just having that family | 0:19:14 | 0:19:18
back together and protecting them all in the same environment | 0:19:18 | 0:19:22
and having a home again. | 0:19:22 | 0:19:25
And what a home it's going to be, | 0:19:25 | 0:19:29
thanks to the hard work of all these people. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:31
It makes you feel all warm inside. Perhaps that's why the hugging just won't stop. | 0:19:31 | 0:19:36
Look at Nigel over there. Safety glasses, obviously, because he's health and safety officer. | 0:19:39 | 0:19:43
There's another one going on now, look. | 0:19:43 | 0:19:47
'I was slightly worried about what I've started here. | 0:19:49 | 0:19:52
'As the sun sets at about 2:45, the timber frame is finished, | 0:19:52 | 0:19:57
'ready to be felted and tiled tomorrow.' | 0:19:57 | 0:19:59
-Thank you. -It's been emotional. Show some of that man love! | 0:19:59 | 0:20:03
-Aww! -This hugging's catching on, isn't it? | 0:20:03 | 0:20:05
LAUGHTER | 0:20:05 | 0:20:06
-See you later. -Cheers, guys. Thanks a lot. Take care, Cheers. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:09
Cubs, do your best. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:15
ALL SHOUT IN UNISON: We will do our best. | 0:20:15 | 0:20:21
I'm not sure what's harder - a day on the building site | 0:20:21 | 0:20:24
or the nine-mile walk that Jess and her cub pack are doing today. | 0:20:24 | 0:20:28
Sometimes it's easy to forget just how much a child's illness | 0:20:28 | 0:20:32
can affect their brothers and sisters. | 0:20:32 | 0:20:35
This is very cool, isn't it? This place that you're camping in. | 0:20:35 | 0:20:38
Actually, I was worried about you camping outside in the open | 0:20:38 | 0:20:41
but this is actually quite warm and nice and twinkly in here, isn't it? | 0:20:41 | 0:20:45
It's been really difficult, the last...what, | 0:20:45 | 0:20:47
-I suppose about six months, hasn't it? -Mm-hmm. | 0:20:47 | 0:20:50
So tell us what's been going on. | 0:20:50 | 0:20:52
Well, we just, kind of... | 0:20:52 | 0:20:57
-just keep going. -Do you worry about Josh? | 0:20:57 | 0:21:00
Yes, I do. I'm scared quite a lot what's going to happen to him. | 0:21:00 | 0:21:06
Because I just don't like being away from Josh and Mum and Dad. | 0:21:06 | 0:21:13
-And has that had to happen a lot? -Yeah. -When does that happen? | 0:21:13 | 0:21:17
Like when they go to Birmingham, | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
when they go to hospital. Um...that kind of stuff. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:24
You know Mum and Dad are a bit worried they haven't paid enough attention to you | 0:21:24 | 0:21:28
-cos they've had to look after Josh, do you know that? -Yeah. | 0:21:28 | 0:21:30
-And how do you know that? -Because they always tell me. | 0:21:30 | 0:21:33
-Do they? -Yeah. -But you understand? -Yeah, I do. | 0:21:33 | 0:21:38
If I was a genie and I could grant three wishes, | 0:21:38 | 0:21:42
what would those three wishes be? | 0:21:42 | 0:21:45
Well, one to get Josh better and the family happy. | 0:21:45 | 0:21:51
And then two, if I could have my own bedroom | 0:21:51 | 0:21:54
and everyone...and the whole house really nice. | 0:21:54 | 0:21:59
-You've still got a wish left. -Um...to be normal. | 0:21:59 | 0:22:06
For everything to be normal again? Mmm. | 0:22:06 | 0:22:10
-Is it fun when you come away to something like this? -Um... | 0:22:10 | 0:22:13
-Does it take your minds off things for a little while? -Yeah. -Does it? | 0:22:13 | 0:22:16
Yeah. It does. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:19
-See you, everyone. See you soon. Bye. -ALL: Bye! | 0:22:21 | 0:22:24
HE LAUGHS | 0:22:24 | 0:22:26
Now, I don't want to tempt fate | 0:22:31 | 0:22:33
but we might be about to make one of those wishes come true. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:38
I'm not quite sure what I'm most impressed with at the moment. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:41
The fact that we have a bedroom here for Jessica | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
which is all she's ever wanted for the last few years | 0:22:43 | 0:22:46
or that it's plastered along with this room | 0:22:46 | 0:22:49
which is already plastered which is pretty incredible | 0:22:49 | 0:22:53
or that if you follow me through the utility room, | 0:22:53 | 0:22:59
we now have an extension which is about 40% extra house for them | 0:22:59 | 0:23:04
and isn't it beautiful? And all this in just two days. | 0:23:04 | 0:23:07
The bricklayers are doing so well, they've started taking walls down to give themselves something to do. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:19
This will be the new living room window. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:24
-So what's the plan today? -We'll get this insulated out and then plasterboarded | 0:23:24 | 0:23:27
and then get it all skimmed out hopefully. | 0:23:27 | 0:23:29
We'll come back tomorrow if not. | 0:23:29 | 0:23:31
-Depends what the little fella... What's his name again? -Who? | 0:23:31 | 0:23:35
-He told us what to do. Is he Irish? -Mark. -Or Scottish. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:40
Look, I'll... Describe him again. Go on, go on! | 0:23:40 | 0:23:44
I just said the little fella. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:45
-What's going on? -He said, "Where's the little..." No, I didn't mean that. Where's... | 0:23:45 | 0:23:49
I said, "Do you know..." | 0:23:49 | 0:23:50
-What did you just say? -I said... -What did you just say? | 0:23:50 | 0:23:53
-I said "little fella" but I didn't mean it like that. I forgot your name, sorry. -Little Mark. | 0:23:53 | 0:23:56
LAUGHTER | 0:23:56 | 0:23:59
Or to give him his full title, Project Manager Little Mark. | 0:23:59 | 0:24:04
He must be doing something right because the roof is taking shape. | 0:24:04 | 0:24:08
-You all right, son? -Getting there. | 0:24:08 | 0:24:11
And he's managed to find this gas fitter | 0:24:12 | 0:24:15
who I think is one of the smartest, most handsome tradesmen | 0:24:15 | 0:24:19
I've ever met. Not that I'm biased(!) | 0:24:19 | 0:24:21
-Have you met my nephew? -I have. -What do you think? | 0:24:21 | 0:24:24
LAUGHTER | 0:24:26 | 0:24:27
You can tell by the vacant stare! | 0:24:27 | 0:24:31
That was a bit harsh, wasn't it? Now in the past we've had to intervene | 0:24:31 | 0:24:34
and stop tradespeople from physically attacking our designer. | 0:24:34 | 0:24:37
Fortunately, Gaby seems to know how to get on with everyone. | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
-So you've enjoyed yourself so far? -I'm really enjoying it and it's just going... | 0:24:41 | 0:24:45
-Oh no, I can't say going well cos we'll be doomed. -No, we don't do that. | 0:24:45 | 0:24:48
We don't say that too early. Paint a picture for us. What will it look like? | 0:24:48 | 0:24:52
Here we've got a lovely fire going in over there. | 0:24:52 | 0:24:54
-Lovely. -So they've got a centrepiece there. | 0:24:54 | 0:24:57
Imaginary armchairs that we don't yet have here. | 0:24:57 | 0:25:00
Still struggling to get hold of those? | 0:25:00 | 0:25:02
The budget is a nightmare on this one. | 0:25:02 | 0:25:04
We've got no appliances and no chairs. | 0:25:04 | 0:25:06
Yeah, we have - a brand-new boiler so their bills will be cheaper. | 0:25:06 | 0:25:09
I know but if we've got no washing machines and stuff... | 0:25:09 | 0:25:15
-so I'm a bit stressed about that. -HE CLEARS HIS THROAT -So you should be. | 0:25:15 | 0:25:18
-Should've had that organised by now, shouldn't you? -Yes. | 0:25:18 | 0:25:21
Don't worry, I'm only playing. | 0:25:21 | 0:25:24
Let's hope all the disruption we're causing the Behan family | 0:25:24 | 0:25:27
is going to pay off. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:29
Since we moved in, they've been staying at Helen's | 0:25:29 | 0:25:32
but wherever Josh is, his treatment doesn't stop. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:36
Visits like this one from the district nurse | 0:25:36 | 0:25:39
are part of his life now. | 0:25:39 | 0:25:41
We only had two nights in hospital. Chemo went well. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:45
He has been feeling quite sick these last few days | 0:25:45 | 0:25:47
but at the moment, he's...he's OK. | 0:25:47 | 0:25:51
Do you want me to get rid of all your rubbish? | 0:25:51 | 0:25:54
You might think that being a nurse who works with cancer patients | 0:25:54 | 0:25:57
would give Sarah an advantage when it comes to looking after Josh. | 0:25:57 | 0:26:01
But it also means that she's all too aware of the challenges ahead. | 0:26:02 | 0:26:07
There are days where I'm fine and think, "Everything's fine, | 0:26:07 | 0:26:10
"we're getting through this," and other days where I realise | 0:26:10 | 0:26:14
what Joshua has been through, we have been through as a family. | 0:26:14 | 0:26:16
So what's the glue holding it all together? | 0:26:16 | 0:26:19
The children have given me strength. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:22
And I think the love of our family, actually. | 0:26:22 | 0:26:26
We've realised what's important. | 0:26:26 | 0:26:28
But now, my fear is the future and what it holds. | 0:26:28 | 0:26:33
It's daring to hope. | 0:26:33 | 0:26:36
Do you not... Y-you... You don't allow yourself to? | 0:26:36 | 0:26:41
I do, but then I worry. | 0:26:41 | 0:26:43
But, um...because we've had six months of sheer hell, | 0:26:43 | 0:26:48
I can't explain my emotions that I've been through. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:53
My heart has been so heavy, I just want it... | 0:26:54 | 0:26:57
It's been pounding out of my chest | 0:26:57 | 0:27:00
because I just want to get him well, I want to get him better, | 0:27:00 | 0:27:03
I want him to have...the future that his little friends will have. | 0:27:03 | 0:27:09
It just breaks my heart | 0:27:09 | 0:27:11
and...to explain to somebody who's got children, | 0:27:11 | 0:27:17
they would understand | 0:27:17 | 0:27:20
but actually the deepest feelings you feel, it's so difficult to explain. | 0:27:20 | 0:27:24
-So how important...is coming home? -He doesn't feel safe in hospital. | 0:27:24 | 0:27:30
All these bad things happened... | 0:27:30 | 0:27:32
Well, not bad things but things that he doesn't like | 0:27:32 | 0:27:35
happened to him in hospital. He feels safe at home and I want them | 0:27:35 | 0:27:38
to feel safe and loved and warm. | 0:27:38 | 0:27:41
So that's what we're working towards. | 0:27:41 | 0:27:45
I'm always amazed at the fantastic turnout we get for Big Builds | 0:27:45 | 0:27:48
but if you'd been waiting six months for a plumber, | 0:27:48 | 0:27:51
you might be wondering how we find all these great tradespeople. | 0:27:51 | 0:27:55
-How did we end up with him on site? -I was driving up the motorway to have a look at this job | 0:27:55 | 0:27:59
-and on the way I was listening to Radio 2. -Yeah. -And Ken Bruce was talking to him on the phone. | 0:27:59 | 0:28:04
-Is that right? -So he came on and did PopMaster. | 0:28:04 | 0:28:07
-A bit of a pop genius, is he? -Absolutely. -I am, actually, yeah. | 0:28:07 | 0:28:10
He got the worst score in 25 years' history of PopMaster. | 0:28:10 | 0:28:15
I think I was set up cos no-one gets that score, really. | 0:28:15 | 0:28:19
-What did you get? -Two points. -Out of? -A possible 39. | 0:28:19 | 0:28:23
THEY LAUGH | 0:28:23 | 0:28:25
Ask him a pop question, any pop question you like, go on. | 0:28:26 | 0:28:29
-Oh, my God. -Step in here. -Ah, see? Um... | 0:28:29 | 0:28:32
-What? -I can't even think of one. | 0:28:32 | 0:28:34
-Exactly. -It's difficult. -When you've got 13 million people... | 0:28:34 | 0:28:37
-Your questions were really easy that day cos I think I got 36. -Oh, God. | 0:28:37 | 0:28:42
-Most of the country got 36! -I think so. -Name me two Village People hits. | 0:28:42 | 0:28:46
-YMCA, In The Navy. -That's slightly worrying. | 0:28:46 | 0:28:50
THEY LAUGH | 0:28:50 | 0:28:52
Well, let's face it, you're not going to make your money on quiz shows. | 0:28:52 | 0:28:56
-Oh, Patrick. -Here you go, Patrick. Ask him any pop-related question. | 0:28:56 | 0:29:02
He's known as the master of pop, he can answer almost any question. | 0:29:02 | 0:29:05
Who sang: | 0:29:05 | 0:29:06
# That was my heart years from now | 0:29:06 | 0:29:11
# Love and pride | 0:29:11 | 0:29:13
-The King. -Yes! -As bad as that, no-one! | 0:29:13 | 0:29:16
LAUGHTER | 0:29:16 | 0:29:18
Oh, come on! | 0:29:18 | 0:29:19
So there you go. If you want to find great tradespeople, | 0:29:20 | 0:29:24
listen to Radio 2. | 0:29:24 | 0:29:26
This morning the extension looked like a shed inside. | 0:29:26 | 0:29:29
Now it's looking like a room. | 0:29:29 | 0:29:31
How will you plaster over the wires and get over that? | 0:29:31 | 0:29:34
What we're going to do is run a batten - not this here obviously - | 0:29:34 | 0:29:37
run a batten along the wall up there | 0:29:37 | 0:29:39
all the way along the wall and make a little box. | 0:29:39 | 0:29:42
We'll cut some timber onto it and just box the whole thing in | 0:29:42 | 0:29:45
so Billy ran all his wires along there | 0:29:45 | 0:29:47
and then the electricians ran all their wires along that side. | 0:29:47 | 0:29:50
Look at the difference, look! | 0:29:50 | 0:29:52
That one over there is a thing of beauty, | 0:29:52 | 0:29:54
the wires just under the ceiling. | 0:29:54 | 0:29:55
And then look at those ones up there. | 0:29:55 | 0:29:59
-Not right, is he? -He's not right, really. Bless him, we love him, love him, love him. | 0:29:59 | 0:30:03
This is Andy, and before he was a plasterer, he was a chef. | 0:30:03 | 0:30:08
And Paul was his boss. | 0:30:08 | 0:30:10
-I wanted to have a chat with you about Paul. -Yeah. | 0:30:10 | 0:30:13
-Cos you've known him a while. How long have you known him? -13 years. | 0:30:13 | 0:30:16
How do you think you'd have done in the same circumstances? | 0:30:16 | 0:30:19
Oh, I can't imagine it. | 0:30:19 | 0:30:21
Cos my son comes over to play with Josh, and it's just, you know... | 0:30:21 | 0:30:24
It's quite upsetting to think... You know, it's just a nightmare. | 0:30:24 | 0:30:28
And he's such a brave kid, like. He's still smiling. | 0:30:28 | 0:30:31
Paul sends us photos of him from the hospital and always still smiling and stuff, you know? | 0:30:31 | 0:30:35
-What do you make of what's going on here then? -Brilliant. And it'll change their lives. | 0:30:35 | 0:30:40
Now, see that frost? That's how cold it is. | 0:30:42 | 0:30:44
Certain days are important from a plastering point of view, | 0:30:44 | 0:30:48
and it's Chris in charge. And today is that day. | 0:30:48 | 0:30:51
This was done prior to us arriving, | 0:30:51 | 0:30:53
and now we need to make this floor the same level as existing. | 0:30:53 | 0:30:57
So, apparently, we have a superfast-setting concrete floor coming at two o'clock. | 0:30:57 | 0:31:03
The boys will get this in, and that's why we need to get that plastered. | 0:31:03 | 0:31:06
They can't go in and out then plaster it, cos there's too many of them. | 0:31:06 | 0:31:09
So you've just got to feed them. | 0:31:09 | 0:31:11
Feed them plaster, feed them tea. | 0:31:11 | 0:31:13
And they'll look after their own room. | 0:31:13 | 0:31:16
Perhaps the reason the job is going so well is because the house is a bungalow. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:21
-That's just one story! -NICK LAUGHS | 0:31:21 | 0:31:23
Do you see what I did there? Really?! | 0:31:23 | 0:31:26
-Do you like working on bungalows? -I love 'em! | 0:31:26 | 0:31:28
You're at a stage of life where you could move into a bungalow! | 0:31:28 | 0:31:31
Well, I don't understand it, people calling me Bungalow Bill. | 0:31:31 | 0:31:35
-I don't understand that. -That's cos there's nothing up top! | 0:31:35 | 0:31:37
THEY LAUGH | 0:31:37 | 0:31:39
Here's the superfast-setting concrete known as screed. | 0:31:41 | 0:31:45
It can't go into the big extension until the plasterers come out, | 0:31:45 | 0:31:49
and if that doesn't happen soon, it'll set solid. | 0:31:49 | 0:31:52
-Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick. -I know, I know. We're under pressure. | 0:31:53 | 0:31:56
We've got to get them in tonight, cos this floor has got to be dry and ready for tomorrow. | 0:31:56 | 0:32:00
We've got floor-fitters, we've got kitchens coming in and stuff... | 0:32:00 | 0:32:03
but the pressure's on, boys! | 0:32:03 | 0:32:06
The pressure's on, lads! | 0:32:06 | 0:32:07
Ten, nine, eight, seven, six... | 0:32:09 | 0:32:12
I'm not sure he's helping! | 0:32:12 | 0:32:14
Billy is loading a barrow, whether the plasterers are ready or not. | 0:32:14 | 0:32:18
Now, we make fun of Billy, but when it comes to building, he really knows his stuff. | 0:32:18 | 0:32:22
Listen to this. | 0:32:22 | 0:32:23
They put fibre in it, | 0:32:23 | 0:32:25
and the fibre helps it to... | 0:32:25 | 0:32:28
-Bond together. -Bond together. | 0:32:28 | 0:32:31
If you say it quieter, then it seems as if it's coming from me, right? | 0:32:31 | 0:32:34
So, they put the fibre in. It reads how much... | 0:32:34 | 0:32:37
of the creed... Screed? Screed. | 0:32:37 | 0:32:40
And then it just puts a load of fibre in. | 0:32:40 | 0:32:42
We thought it would be a lot of fibre. | 0:32:42 | 0:32:44
The fibre helps the screed bond together. | 0:32:44 | 0:32:48
HE LAUGHS | 0:32:49 | 0:32:51
If you believe that, you believe anything I say! | 0:32:51 | 0:32:53
What did I tell you? He's a font of knowledge, that man. | 0:32:53 | 0:32:58
-All right, gentlemen? -Hello, mate. -How's it going? -Aye, good, thanks. Last wall now. | 0:32:58 | 0:33:02
Mate, you've got there, look. | 0:33:02 | 0:33:04
Timing to...perfection. | 0:33:04 | 0:33:07
-Well done, boys! Thank you. -No worries. Thanks. | 0:33:07 | 0:33:10
So, that's the screed down, and there's more good news. | 0:33:11 | 0:33:15
Up on the scaffold, EVERYTHING is finished. | 0:33:15 | 0:33:17
MARK: Lovely job. | 0:33:17 | 0:33:18
If you're in the area again, we'll help you out again. | 0:33:18 | 0:33:21
Rough diamonds, that's what they are. | 0:33:21 | 0:33:24
We're turning a corner. | 0:33:24 | 0:33:25
This place feels less like a building site and more like a home. | 0:33:25 | 0:33:28
Boys came in here and started at 6.30 this morning. | 0:33:28 | 0:33:31
Got the hallway in, dropping through the kitchen, | 0:33:31 | 0:33:33
so that when the kitchen arrives at 11 o'clock or so... | 0:33:33 | 0:33:37
-All right, Ian? All right? All right?! -No! -What's wrong with you? | 0:33:37 | 0:33:41
Under pressure! | 0:33:41 | 0:33:42
-All right, John? Are you under pressure? -Yeah, always! | 0:33:44 | 0:33:47
Drama queens, the pair of them. Absolute drama queens. | 0:33:48 | 0:33:52
That's rich coming from you! | 0:33:52 | 0:33:54
It's been bitterly cold this week, | 0:33:56 | 0:33:59
but that hasn't stopped John - another friend of Paul and Sarah's. | 0:33:59 | 0:34:02
Here's his idea of an easy day's work. | 0:34:02 | 0:34:05
Screed away. | 0:34:05 | 0:34:07
..finish the patio off. | 0:34:07 | 0:34:09
I've only just started the patio, but finish it off. | 0:34:09 | 0:34:11
Get the path running, hopefully. | 0:34:13 | 0:34:15
And start prepping for the turf and the finish. | 0:34:17 | 0:34:21
We're here till the end. Till the bitter end! | 0:34:21 | 0:34:24
And they've been here since the start. | 0:34:24 | 0:34:26
This is make-or-break time for Gaby as the design comes together. | 0:34:26 | 0:34:30
She's got to be all over everything. No pressure, then. | 0:34:30 | 0:34:33
How are you finding it? | 0:34:33 | 0:34:35
I want this house to be perfect for them, and it really stresses me out, | 0:34:35 | 0:34:38
because I'm just worried... about every little detail. | 0:34:38 | 0:34:41
And it's really important to me as well that if I do my job right, | 0:34:41 | 0:34:46
then all this hard work these guys have done for nothing pays off. | 0:34:46 | 0:34:50
But if I get it wrong, just by choosing the wrong wallpaper | 0:34:50 | 0:34:54
or putting some furniture they don't like in, | 0:34:54 | 0:34:57
then I've ruined it all! | 0:34:57 | 0:34:59
-Yes. -So that's my worry. -No, you have. | 0:34:59 | 0:35:01
-No, you have. -And I know you like to... | 0:35:01 | 0:35:03
LAUGHTER | 0:35:03 | 0:35:05
They're all working their socks off for this family. | 0:35:05 | 0:35:08
And working over two weekends. Actually, Mark has got a sock there. | 0:35:08 | 0:35:12
-He's done his work so hard... -My socks have come off! -His sock has actually come off. | 0:35:12 | 0:35:16
Aw, she cares so much. | 0:35:16 | 0:35:20
Everyone here does. I love it. But she's right. | 0:35:20 | 0:35:23
It's all about building a house that will help the family face the challenges of the future. | 0:35:23 | 0:35:27
-Have you heard about the family? -Yes, a little bit. Liver transplant? | 0:35:29 | 0:35:33
Yeah. Little Josh has got cancer and it's been really... | 0:35:33 | 0:35:37
-..really rubbish for him, actually. -Yeah, well yeah. | 0:35:37 | 0:35:40
Yeah, so I've made it even more important to do it, really. | 0:35:40 | 0:35:43
-Yeah. -Cos my daughter died from it, so... | 0:35:43 | 0:35:46
-Well, not liver cancer, she had neuroblastoma. -Oh, man. | 0:35:46 | 0:35:49
So, it's nice to give something back for a change. | 0:35:49 | 0:35:53
Doing up someone's house like this, with the experience that you've got, | 0:35:53 | 0:35:57
I mean, your home is really important, isn't it? | 0:35:57 | 0:35:59
Oh crumbs, yeah. That's the place you want to be. | 0:35:59 | 0:36:02
-It's just nice to come home and it be tidy. -Yeah. | 0:36:02 | 0:36:06
Cos you have so many - I don't know about little Josh, what he had, | 0:36:06 | 0:36:08
but we had so many drugs in the house. | 0:36:08 | 0:36:11
We had to have a cupboard on the walls, lockable and all that. | 0:36:11 | 0:36:13
And a list of what time we had to give her drugs and all that sort of thing. | 0:36:13 | 0:36:18
To have it all neat and tidy and where you want it, it's just something less to worry about. | 0:36:18 | 0:36:22
It's good hearing you say that, cos Sarah, she's a nurse as well, | 0:36:22 | 0:36:26
and I think for her, her way of copway of coping with it | 0:36:26 | 0:36:29
is just to try and organise everything, | 0:36:29 | 0:36:31
just at least feel a little bit in control. | 0:36:31 | 0:36:33
-Yeah, control, that's the one thing, because you've got no control. -No. | 0:36:33 | 0:36:37
You haven't got any control. You've got a little bit of control at home about what you're doing and all that. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:42
But the end result you've got no control over. | 0:36:42 | 0:36:44
To come home and it be sorted, it just... makes it so much easier. | 0:36:44 | 0:36:49
That sense of being out of control is very hard for any parent. | 0:36:49 | 0:36:54
But especially, I think, for fathers who feel it's their duty, | 0:36:54 | 0:36:57
their job perhaps, to protect the family | 0:36:57 | 0:36:59
and make things right, fix everything. | 0:36:59 | 0:37:03
So how does Paul feel about the people helping to fix the house? | 0:37:03 | 0:37:06
I'm humbled. I'm slightly embarrassed by it because these people, | 0:37:06 | 0:37:12
it's tough times and they're giving up a week, | 0:37:12 | 0:37:15
two weeks of their own time, their own money. | 0:37:15 | 0:37:18
And, eh... It must be difficult. We appreciate it. | 0:37:18 | 0:37:22
I mean, we're just very humbled by it all. | 0:37:22 | 0:37:25
So if you walk back into the house that you need, how does life change? | 0:37:27 | 0:37:31
It's just to give Josh the space that is needed to look after him | 0:37:31 | 0:37:35
on a day-to-day basis, somewhere he can get away from things, which he will need to do. | 0:37:35 | 0:37:40
There's going to be tough times for him. And with the drugs he is on, | 0:37:40 | 0:37:43
each time they might change a dose or try a different drug, | 0:37:43 | 0:37:48
there are side effects which we perhaps didn't really know about. | 0:37:48 | 0:37:53
Em... Some of his hearing is starting to go, | 0:37:53 | 0:37:56
which means now he'll probably need hearing aids for school and stuff like that. | 0:37:56 | 0:38:01
So that's another hurdle he has to overcome. | 0:38:01 | 0:38:04
Em... his heart has to be monitored and his kidneys also | 0:38:04 | 0:38:08
can fail through the chemotherapy drugs they administer. | 0:38:08 | 0:38:12
But the thing that gives us hope, we see other children | 0:38:12 | 0:38:14
who have progressed through all this who have perhaps been more advanced | 0:38:14 | 0:38:18
than Josh is in terms of their treatment, | 0:38:18 | 0:38:21
and you think, well, that will be him hopefully in a year or two. | 0:38:21 | 0:38:25
And while he is recovering, | 0:38:25 | 0:38:27
we want to make Josh's room a safe haven for him. | 0:38:27 | 0:38:30
Because he'll spend much time here, | 0:38:30 | 0:38:33
it also needs to be a fun place to be. | 0:38:33 | 0:38:35
So we built this - bed on top, den underneath. | 0:38:35 | 0:38:38
And who better to judge it than our very own chubby-cheeked little toddler Jules? | 0:38:38 | 0:38:43
Even I can fit in this den. | 0:38:46 | 0:38:48
-Has it looking? -Great, mate. | 0:38:48 | 0:38:50
Nice little den. I was saying, if this was my bed, | 0:38:50 | 0:38:53
I know it's handy for storage, but if I was little 'un | 0:38:53 | 0:38:55
I'd want to be crawling round inside and make a den under there. | 0:38:55 | 0:38:58
I'd have loved a den like that when I was that age. | 0:38:58 | 0:39:01
I'd love a den like that now. | 0:39:01 | 0:39:04
-Have you not got a shed? -Most men have a shed, don't they? Do you have a shed? | 0:39:04 | 0:39:07
-I've got four sheds. -You've got four sheds? | 0:39:07 | 0:39:09
-Four sheds and a garage. -I've only got two. | 0:39:09 | 0:39:13
-And a bike shed and a woodshed. -I haven't got a shed. | 0:39:13 | 0:39:16
-Have you not? Mate, get yourself a shed. -Haven't you got a shed, Matt? | 0:39:16 | 0:39:19
-Yeah, I got two. -Billy's got a shed but he's got a bar in his shed. | 0:39:19 | 0:39:23
Have you - Oi, Bill, have you got a bar in your shed? | 0:39:23 | 0:39:26
Mm. When we have barbecues, we can have the door open. | 0:39:26 | 0:39:30
Oh, so he doesn't have a shed for pottering in? | 0:39:30 | 0:39:32
He has got a shed at the back of it, which is your space, isn't it, where your tools are? | 0:39:32 | 0:39:36
Yeah, all my tools. Then I've got the brick shed for the other stuff. | 0:39:36 | 0:39:39
-So you've got three sheds? -Why don't you have a shed then? | 0:39:39 | 0:39:42
Well, cos... cos I don't potter. | 0:39:42 | 0:39:45
Haven't you got a place you go, phew? | 0:39:45 | 0:39:47
Yeah, you've got to have a phew place. | 0:39:47 | 0:39:50
-That's why you're too tense. -You think? | 0:39:50 | 0:39:53
-Because you don't potter. -What makes you think I'm too tense? | 0:39:53 | 0:39:56
-What makes you think I'm too tense?! -I rest my case. | 0:39:56 | 0:39:59
-What are you talking about? When have I ever been tense? -Exactly. | 0:39:59 | 0:40:02
We know why... At night you go to bed thinking you're a wigwam, | 0:40:02 | 0:40:06
and when you wake up in the morning you feel like you're a teepee, | 0:40:06 | 0:40:10
so you're two tents! Two tents! | 0:40:10 | 0:40:12
LAUGHTER | 0:40:12 | 0:40:14
'It was like being run over like a steamroller, wasn't it?' | 0:40:14 | 0:40:17
You could see it coming a long way off, but there was nothing you could do to stop it. | 0:40:17 | 0:40:21
Remember, this is more than a kitchen they're making here. | 0:40:21 | 0:40:25
There will be extra storage | 0:40:25 | 0:40:26
for all Joss's medicines and somewhere to prepare them. | 0:40:26 | 0:40:29
But to make sure it doesn't feel clinical, these gentlemen have built | 0:40:29 | 0:40:33
this table and shelves from scratch using reclaimed timber. | 0:40:33 | 0:40:36
And they look great. Everything has to be finished today. | 0:40:36 | 0:40:39
And there's 32 people on site trying to get it all done, | 0:40:39 | 0:40:44
most of them in here. | 0:40:44 | 0:40:46
-How are we doing with the kitchen? -I think it's going all right. | 0:40:46 | 0:40:49
There's not much space in here, but we're getting along nicely. | 0:40:49 | 0:40:52
The spark's out and we'll all put things together. | 0:40:52 | 0:40:54
We're all just mucking in together. | 0:40:54 | 0:40:57
Hopefully, we'll be 99% there by tonight. That's the plan. | 0:40:57 | 0:41:00
-Yeah? -Show 'em your moustache. -You've got a moustache? | 0:41:00 | 0:41:04
-Yeah. -What else have you got? -LAUGHTER -Teardrops, as well. | 0:41:06 | 0:41:09
That's not right, is it?! It's not. | 0:41:09 | 0:41:11
See what happens to people when they work with Bill? | 0:41:11 | 0:41:13
He was probably a normal lad when he first started. | 0:41:13 | 0:41:16
Can you rub that off? | 0:41:16 | 0:41:18
-No. That is a tattoo. -It's a tattoo?! -Yeah. | 0:41:18 | 0:41:21
-You had a moustache tattooed to your finger? -Yeah. | 0:41:21 | 0:41:24
So you could do what with it? | 0:41:24 | 0:41:26
Just... | 0:41:26 | 0:41:27
LAUGHTER | 0:41:27 | 0:41:29
'If I say that's one of the maddest things I've ever seen | 0:41:29 | 0:41:32
and that no-one's going to top that, you just know that someone will, don't you? | 0:41:32 | 0:41:36
Can I come back in now? | 0:41:38 | 0:41:40
Look. | 0:41:40 | 0:41:41 | |
"Love." | 0:41:41 | 0:41:43
-Look what it says there. That's not going to come off. -Oh. | 0:41:43 | 0:41:47
Oh. Only doing it for the telly. | 0:41:50 | 0:41:52
Who uses a permanent marker on your own face?! | 0:41:55 | 0:41:59
After a week outside in weather that would leave a brass monkey in need of welding, | 0:42:01 | 0:42:05
John's not going to let anyone damage his good work. | 0:42:05 | 0:42:08
He's ready for a turf war. | 0:42:08 | 0:42:10
You don't think you've gone too draconian with your sign? | 0:42:10 | 0:42:13
Works either way, I think. | 0:42:13 | 0:42:15
-You think? -Yeah, it gets the message out. -I think it does. | 0:42:15 | 0:42:19
Gabrielle wants the new living room to be a cosy retreat for Josh | 0:42:20 | 0:42:24
and family. | 0:42:24 | 0:42:25
And it's all really starting to feel the part. | 0:42:25 | 0:42:28
Wherever you turn, she's making sure that every detail of her traditional- | 0:42:28 | 0:42:32
but-not-so-traditional-it-doesn't- look-great-in-a-bungalow design | 0:42:32 | 0:42:36
comes together as planned. | 0:42:36 | 0:42:39
-What do you think, Gabbers? -Um... | 0:42:39 | 0:42:42
I quite like it, actually, Mark. It works quite... Er... | 0:42:43 | 0:42:47
No, it's not, it's lovely. | 0:42:47 | 0:42:49
-You like it? -It's lovely. | 0:42:49 | 0:42:50
I think I'm being quite low maintenance today, don't you think? | 0:42:50 | 0:42:53
Don't you think, Mark? | 0:42:55 | 0:42:56
No? | 0:42:56 | 0:42:58 | |
I think that's what they call a telling silence. | 0:42:58 | 0:43:01
But if anyone should have been getting the silent treatment, | 0:43:01 | 0:43:05
it's Billy the bathroom wrecker. | 0:43:05 | 0:43:08
-You've been doing the hearth? -Yeah, that's all done. -Lovely. | 0:43:08 | 0:43:11
-Ready to go. -Anything else? | 0:43:11 | 0:43:13
-Splashback. -Splashback. -And change the tile. | 0:43:13 | 0:43:16
A repair job where Billy drilled through the wall? Have you said thank you? | 0:43:16 | 0:43:20
Thank you. | 0:43:20 | 0:43:21
These boys have just tidied up your little... | 0:43:21 | 0:43:24
-We took the tile out, didn't we? -"We"? -Yeah. John. | 0:43:24 | 0:43:28
-I think you broke the tile, didn't you? -Yeah. | 0:43:28 | 0:43:30
Just two inches out, that's all it was, two inches out. | 0:43:30 | 0:43:32
It doesn't matter whether it's two inches or a mile, Bill. | 0:43:34 | 0:43:37
If it's wrong, it's wrong. | 0:43:37 | 0:43:38
As this lot are finding out | 0:43:40 | 0:43:42
with a fridge that just won't go where it should. | 0:43:42 | 0:43:44
These need to be flush with the front of that unit. | 0:43:44 | 0:43:47
-That's how you screw it into the unit. -45 mil. | 0:43:47 | 0:43:51
-And with 80 mil... -ALL TALK OVER EACH OTHER | 0:43:51 | 0:43:54
Got to come out and take it back again. | 0:43:54 | 0:43:56
That's fantastic, isn't it? | 0:43:56 | 0:43:58
You got guys who have brought the white goods along for us, | 0:43:58 | 0:44:01
an electrician in on the conversation, two chippies, | 0:44:01 | 0:44:03
and they've worked it out between them. And... | 0:44:03 | 0:44:06
-Do you need an 'and? > -No, thanks very much. We're all right, thanks, Bill. | 0:44:06 | 0:44:10
We're not going to let him at it, are we? | 0:44:11 | 0:44:14
'Next time there's a problem we just need everyone to put | 0:44:14 | 0:44:17
their heads together and stress Gabrielle out completely. | 0:44:17 | 0:44:20
Yeah, what's going on here? The island's in the wrong position. | 0:44:22 | 0:44:27
It's too close because that corridor's too narrow. | 0:44:27 | 0:44:30
If you bend in front of the oven like that, and bring a tray out of the oven, | 0:44:30 | 0:44:33
you've got to turn. You need the turning space. | 0:44:33 | 0:44:36
-Is it screwed to the floor? -It's here. | 0:44:37 | 0:44:39
This is centralised on the island, you see. | 0:44:39 | 0:44:43
-We have to do something with that. Either we... -No. | 0:44:43 | 0:44:46
We put something with a hook on to take the light over. | 0:44:46 | 0:44:48
That's going to be too short up there. | 0:44:48 | 0:44:51
Can we move it along and see what it looks like? | 0:44:51 | 0:44:54
Let's make a decision really quickly, | 0:44:54 | 0:44:56
because there's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, | 0:44:56 | 0:44:59
nine people standing over here who should be working. | 0:44:59 | 0:45:01
-We've got to move it so let's... -It's got to be moved. | 0:45:01 | 0:45:04
Two, three... | 0:45:04 | 0:45:05
Keep going, keep going, keep going. Yes! | 0:45:05 | 0:45:09
Lie in there, get the extra key and give it slung down. | 0:45:09 | 0:45:11
Get this kitchen finished. Come on. ALL: Yes. | 0:45:11 | 0:45:14
Late into the night, | 0:45:18 | 0:45:19
Gaby's still hard at it, sorting out the last details of the kitchen. | 0:45:19 | 0:45:23
And there's one last hurdle. This worktop is attractive, | 0:45:23 | 0:45:26
hard-wearing, hygienic | 0:45:26 | 0:45:28
and can be bonded to form a single length. | 0:45:28 | 0:45:31
Shame it doesn't fit. | 0:45:31 | 0:45:33
Now we've got a problem with the splashback, as well. | 0:45:34 | 0:45:38
Those walls are supposed to be in line with each other. That's... | 0:45:38 | 0:45:41
-That's why... -We need these worktops in tonight. | 0:45:41 | 0:45:44
The boys have literary got an hour left. | 0:45:44 | 0:45:47
-They're doing their best, let's just... -Let's argue about it later. | 0:45:47 | 0:45:50
Remember, lads, | 0:45:50 | 0:45:52
measure twice, cut once. | 0:45:52 | 0:45:55
Right. Let's cut this one. | 0:45:55 | 0:45:57
Well, it wouldn't be a Big Build without a last-minute problem | 0:45:59 | 0:46:02
and a late finish, would it? | 0:46:02 | 0:46:05
Over the last few months, | 0:46:09 | 0:46:11
the Behan family have had their world turned upside down. | 0:46:11 | 0:46:15
I just want to be their mum. | 0:46:15 | 0:46:16
It would be nice not to worry about the house, | 0:46:16 | 0:46:19
just to come home, somewhere we can be safe. | 0:46:19 | 0:46:21
And even after Josh's transplant, | 0:46:21 | 0:46:23
they still have some big challenges ahead. | 0:46:23 | 0:46:26
We treat every day as it comes. Some days are good, some days are bad. | 0:46:26 | 0:46:30
If you could make everything better, | 0:46:30 | 0:46:32
what would be the first thing on your list? | 0:46:32 | 0:46:34
To make our family normal again. | 0:46:34 | 0:46:38
Um, and just be happy. | 0:46:38 | 0:46:41
So how much do you look forward to going home? | 0:46:41 | 0:46:44
A lot. | 0:46:44 | 0:46:46 | |
But now they have one less thing to worry about. | 0:46:46 | 0:46:50
Thanks to the incredible efforts of 110 tradesmen and women... | 0:46:53 | 0:46:57
..we've given Josh a room of his own. It's comfortable and fun. | 0:47:03 | 0:47:08
And it's somewhere to recover. | 0:47:10 | 0:47:13
We've given Jess the room of her own she wanted | 0:47:17 | 0:47:20
and needed so badly. | 0:47:20 | 0:47:22
After the months she's spent staying with friends while Josh | 0:47:24 | 0:47:28
was in hospital, at last she has a space of her own at home. | 0:47:28 | 0:47:31
For Sarah and Paul, | 0:47:35 | 0:47:37
there's somewhere comfortable to relax at last. | 0:47:37 | 0:47:42
There's a cosy living room that has the traditional feel Sarah loves, | 0:47:47 | 0:47:51
but still works in this modern bungalow. | 0:47:51 | 0:47:54
And perhaps most important of all, | 0:47:59 | 0:48:02
a kitchen-diner where the family can be together. | 0:48:02 | 0:48:06
With storage space for all Josh's medicines | 0:48:06 | 0:48:09
right in the centre of the house. | 0:48:09 | 0:48:11
After all the difficulties of the last few months, | 0:48:16 | 0:48:18
it's somewhere they can really enjoy coming home to. | 0:48:18 | 0:48:23
What did you need? | 0:48:38 | 0:48:39
Somewhere just to feel safe and normal, | 0:48:39 | 0:48:43
just to have that sanctuary of home. | 0:48:43 | 0:48:45
OK, well, | 0:48:45 | 0:48:47
a lot of people worked very hard over a very short time | 0:48:47 | 0:48:52
and I think they've done an amazing job | 0:48:52 | 0:48:55
and I think they've given you what you need, so... | 0:48:55 | 0:48:59
if you're ready? | 0:48:59 | 0:49:01
Hm-hm | 0:49:01 | 0:49:03 | |
Open your eyes. | 0:49:03 | 0:49:05
HE LAUGHS | 0:49:05 | 0:49:06
Oh, my gosh! | 0:49:09 | 0:49:11
-Wow. -HE LAUGHS | 0:49:11 | 0:49:13
It's beautiful. | 0:49:16 | 0:49:17
-That is absolutely... -It's absolutely beautiful. | 0:49:19 | 0:49:23
It's stunning. | 0:49:23 | 0:49:24
Probably of importance to you, | 0:49:32 | 0:49:34
while we're in this part of the kitchen, | 0:49:34 | 0:49:36
is if you walk into that part of the kitchen, which extends all the way through, | 0:49:36 | 0:49:40
you've got an important storage space for you to put Josh's stuff. | 0:49:40 | 0:49:43
This is the idea - to give you the space | 0:49:43 | 0:49:46
to have all Josh's medical equipment | 0:49:46 | 0:49:49
and have it available and a worktop to work on. | 0:49:49 | 0:49:52
But not for it to dominate the whole house, | 0:49:52 | 0:49:55
so it keeps all that under control. | 0:49:55 | 0:49:57
It's... I never thought I'd have anything like this. Ever. | 0:49:57 | 0:50:01
And it's just like home. | 0:50:11 | 0:50:14
Oh! It's... Oh! | 0:50:14 | 0:50:16
-HE LAUGHS -Oh, deary me. | 0:50:16 | 0:50:20
HE LAUGHS | 0:50:20 | 0:50:23
SHE SOBS It's beautiful. | 0:50:23 | 0:50:26
She's got it so everything is just beautiful. | 0:50:26 | 0:50:29
It's perfect. | 0:50:32 | 0:50:34
SHE SOBS It's... It's perfect is all I can say. | 0:50:37 | 0:50:41
SHE GASPS | 0:50:55 | 0:50:56
Oh. SHE LAUGHS | 0:50:56 | 0:50:58
Look! Look! | 0:51:06 | 0:51:08
So beautiful. | 0:51:10 | 0:51:13
-Do you want to have a look in the cupboard behind you? -Yep. | 0:51:13 | 0:51:17
Open it. | 0:51:17 | 0:51:19
Oh! HE LAUGHS | 0:51:19 | 0:51:21
Nice. Lovely! | 0:51:21 | 0:51:23
Nice to have, obviously, a lovely bedroom | 0:51:23 | 0:51:26
and somewhere you can come and relax, | 0:51:26 | 0:51:28
but not the most important thing to you, really, was it? | 0:51:28 | 0:51:31
It was always going to be the living area and... | 0:51:31 | 0:51:35
-Room for Jessica, space for Jessica. -Right. | 0:51:35 | 0:51:38
SHE GASPS | 0:51:45 | 0:51:47
Oh, deary me! | 0:51:47 | 0:51:48
It's lovely. | 0:51:51 | 0:51:52
-Look at her tigers. -Oh! | 0:51:53 | 0:51:57
I'm going to cry again. | 0:51:57 | 0:52:00
Oh, it's... Oh, she's got all her little arty bits. | 0:52:01 | 0:52:05
It... Oh, she's going to love it. | 0:52:05 | 0:52:08
Absolutely love it. | 0:52:08 | 0:52:10
Oh, look at the little lamps with birds on them. | 0:52:10 | 0:52:14
-Oh, that's beautiful. -There's all the bits on the desk. | 0:52:14 | 0:52:18
It's perfect. | 0:52:18 | 0:52:20
This is beyond anything that we ever dreamed of, really. | 0:52:20 | 0:52:24
It's exactly what we needed and exactly what we wanted, | 0:52:24 | 0:52:27
but it's so much more. | 0:52:27 | 0:52:30
-I just can't believe it. -This is home. | 0:52:32 | 0:52:35
That's all I can say - it's home. | 0:52:35 | 0:52:38
And in here. | 0:52:38 | 0:52:41
BOTH EXCLAIM | 0:52:41 | 0:52:43
-Oh. -Oh, look! | 0:52:43 | 0:52:44
-He's going to go bonkers! -HE LAUGHS | 0:52:44 | 0:52:46
Oh, it's lovely! | 0:52:49 | 0:52:50
SHE SOBS | 0:52:57 | 0:52:58
It's beautiful. He'll love it. That's just what he... | 0:52:58 | 0:53:01
SHE LAUGHS AND SOBS AT SAME TIME | 0:53:01 | 0:53:03
It's beautiful. | 0:53:11 | 0:53:12
SHE LAUGHS | 0:53:18 | 0:53:20
It's just what he needs. | 0:53:20 | 0:53:23
Space, all his little things. | 0:53:25 | 0:53:27
-So it's a den for him, as well. -Fantastic. | 0:53:32 | 0:53:35
He can crawl underneath and play underneath | 0:53:35 | 0:53:37
and there's all kinds of things for him to play with in his den. | 0:53:37 | 0:53:40
There's also, just here.... | 0:53:40 | 0:53:43
-..an extendable mattress which goes out flat. -Oh, lovely. | 0:53:43 | 0:53:46
You know sometimes you like to lay in here with him. | 0:53:46 | 0:53:49
Yeah. | 0:53:49 | 0:53:51 | |
The other point about the bed being this way, | 0:53:54 | 0:53:56
-A, it's great fun for him to climb up. -Yes. | 0:53:56 | 0:53:59
Also, if he's feeling unwell, | 0:53:59 | 0:54:02
you'll find it's exactly the right height for him to lift him without hurting your back. | 0:54:02 | 0:54:06
So it looks fun, | 0:54:06 | 0:54:07
but the point being that it can work for you | 0:54:07 | 0:54:11
-if he's feeling tired. -Yes. | 0:54:11 | 0:54:13
We don't get carried away with the whole process we do. | 0:54:17 | 0:54:21
We've made a building, we...we haven't, we haven't made Josh well, | 0:54:21 | 0:54:26
we haven't helped Josh get better. | 0:54:26 | 0:54:28
I think, mentally, it will be the biggest boost for him. | 0:54:30 | 0:54:35
-It will be... -You think, really? | 0:54:35 | 0:54:37
-Oh, yes! -That room is his little sanctuary. | 0:54:37 | 0:54:40
-He feels most safe in his bedroom, doesn't he? -He does. | 0:54:40 | 0:54:43
And that will make a massive difference to him. | 0:54:43 | 0:54:46
And here's... | 0:54:46 | 0:54:48
MUM: Ah! | 0:54:48 | 0:54:49
Ah! | 0:54:49 | 0:54:52 | |
Wow! | 0:54:53 | 0:54:55 | |
Cool! | 0:54:57 | 0:54:59 | |
-This is awesome! -DAD LAUGHS | 0:54:59 | 0:55:02
Wow! | 0:55:02 | 0:55:04 | |
LAUGHTER | 0:55:04 | 0:55:06
No more girls. | 0:55:08 | 0:55:11
-Yeah! -LAUGHTER | 0:55:11 | 0:55:12
ALL LAUGH | 0:55:16 | 0:55:19
SHE GASPS | 0:55:20 | 0:55:21
Oh! | 0:55:21 | 0:55:24 | |
-What do you think? -I love it. | 0:55:25 | 0:55:28
I like the wallpaper. | 0:55:28 | 0:55:31
-Perfect wallpaper. -Yeah! -Just what... | 0:55:31 | 0:55:34
I've got a desk. | 0:55:34 | 0:55:36
-It's just pretty. -Yes. | 0:55:39 | 0:55:41
Just what you deserve, hm? SHE LAUGHS | 0:55:42 | 0:55:44
You do. | 0:55:44 | 0:55:47
APPLAUSE | 0:55:56 | 0:55:57
Anyone that knows me knows that I'm never short of a word to say, | 0:56:11 | 0:56:15
but, guys, I'm just totally and utterly speechless | 0:56:15 | 0:56:19
over what you've done for us. | 0:56:19 | 0:56:20
People have given up their time and, er... | 0:56:20 | 0:56:24
HE LAUGHS NERVOUSLY | 0:56:24 | 0:56:25
Thank you's a small word, | 0:56:25 | 0:56:27
-but that's... -Thank you so much. | 0:56:27 | 0:56:30
I can't tell you what this means to me and my family. SHE SOBS | 0:56:30 | 0:56:33
It means so much. | 0:56:33 | 0:56:35
Thank you so much. | 0:56:37 | 0:56:39
APPLAUSE | 0:56:39 | 0:56:41
Oh, Gaby! | 0:56:43 | 0:56:45
-Thank you. Thank you. -Such a pleasure, sweetheart. | 0:56:45 | 0:56:48
-HE LAUGHS -Cheers. | 0:56:48 | 0:56:51
Oh! | 0:56:55 | 0:56:56 | |
What's your favourite football team? | 0:56:56 | 0:56:59
-Ipswich. -Ipswich? | 0:56:59 | 0:57:02
So would it be very cool if someone from Ipswich Town, | 0:57:02 | 0:57:05
one of the players, had came along, as well? | 0:57:05 | 0:57:07
-The goalie! -Right, the goalkeeper! | 0:57:07 | 0:57:09
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:57:09 | 0:57:10
I'd like to give you a signed pair of my match gloves. | 0:57:14 | 0:57:17
They've not been worn recently, unfortunately. LAUGHTER | 0:57:17 | 0:57:20
But they're signed to you, OK? | 0:57:20 | 0:57:21
APPLAUSE | 0:57:21 | 0:57:25
