Last year, Paul and Sarah decided to extend their house

0:00:020:00:06

so their children, Jess and Josh could both have a room of their own.

0:00:060:00:11

But the week after they dug the foundations,

0:00:110:00:13

Josh started to complain of stomach pains.

0:00:130:00:16

I remember walking up the road with him and saying, "Come on, Josh. There's nothing wrong with you."

0:00:160:00:21

Typical dad. A week later he was laying in a bed, desperately ill.

0:00:210:00:25

Right up until that last moment,

0:00:250:00:27

I never suspected that it would be cancer.

0:00:270:00:31

Cancer so severe that Josh needed a liver transplant

0:00:310:00:35

and now he's going to need a lot of care for the rest of his life.

0:00:350:00:38

You're helpless.

0:00:380:00:40

If you could take the pain away from him... It's just horrible.

0:00:400:00:44

If you could make everything better, what would be the first thing on your list?

0:00:440:00:48

To make our family normal again.

0:00:480:00:52

And just be happy.

0:00:520:00:55

'And to do that, this house needs to become a home that will help the family face the future together.'

0:00:550:01:02

-What makes you happy?

-Going home.

-Going home makes you happy?

0:01:020:01:07

Home is so important. I want them to feel safe and loved and warm.

0:01:070:01:12

And that's where we come in. With the support of local trades, we're going to try

0:01:160:01:21

and give this family the space they need to help Josh get better.

0:01:210:01:26

We've got just nine days to get the job done.

0:01:260:01:28

We need an army of builders who know what they're doing.

0:01:280:01:31

That's handy. I'm glad you're here.

0:01:310:01:34

-Can you tell us where we can find an army of builders who know what they're doing?

-ALL: No!

0:01:340:01:39

I guess we'll have to make do with this lot.

0:01:390:01:41

This is DIY SOS, The Big Build.

0:01:410:01:44

Last spring, Paul and Sarah started to extend their cramped bungalow in Duxford near Cambridge.

0:01:540:02:01

Their son Josh was growing up fast.

0:02:010:02:04

It seems such a long time ago now.

0:02:040:02:06

He had football tournaments, and I just thought to myself,

0:02:060:02:12

"He's just lost his little spark."

0:02:120:02:15

The next week, he was sent home from school poorly,

0:02:150:02:20

with just a tummy ache and it was just a very, very gradual decline

0:02:200:02:24

until that last week when his pain was just uncontrollable.

0:02:240:02:31

Ultrasound tests revealed a lump in Josh's liver.

0:02:310:02:35

The doctor never said it will be all right. Don't worry.

0:02:350:02:38

And I know that's.... I know the drill.

0:02:380:02:43

Sarah knew the drill because she's an oncology nurse, working with cancer patients every day.

0:02:430:02:50

Josh was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma, a very rare and aggressive form of liver cancer.

0:02:520:02:59

Three painful sessions of chemotherapy were followed by a successful liver transplant.

0:02:590:03:06

But Josh's condition still has a huge impact on his life.

0:03:070:03:12

Josh can't do anything really.

0:03:120:03:16

So he just stays in bed and watches TV.

0:03:160:03:20

A horrible moment. We were with some friends of ours and he had a pump on

0:03:200:03:24

and a little rucksack and he has his feed that was 24 hours a day,

0:03:240:03:28

and they've got one of these trampolines in their back garden

0:03:280:03:31

and his three little friends were jumping around in there and there was Josh sat on the side. Hard.

0:03:310:03:37

Josh's life has changed beyond recognition,

0:03:370:03:41

putting huge demands on the family's small and cramped bungalow.

0:03:410:03:45

We have to give him about 12 drugs a day, so his body accepts his liver.

0:03:450:03:50

But he's on other drugs as well to help him because his immune system is suppressed,

0:03:500:03:55

he is at risk of infection, so we give him anti-viral drugs,

0:03:550:03:59

just to hopefully safeguard him against any infection.

0:03:590:04:03

All right Josh, take your medicines, darling?

0:04:050:04:08

'It's the responsibility, it's all on my shoulders.

0:04:080:04:12

'And because I'm a nurse, it is a control thing as well.'

0:04:120:04:16

But then you shouldn't be doing that with your son. Your own son. It's really hard.

0:04:170:04:22

With no room in the house, those drugs have got to go somewhere.

0:04:220:04:27

In here we've got all his nutrient milk,

0:04:280:04:32

they call it, which is basically pumped into his stomach via a line.

0:04:320:04:37

Its job is to maintain his weight.

0:04:370:04:40

As well as needing more space to store Josh's medicines, the family urgently need another bedroom.

0:04:400:04:46

Jess and Josh have always shared a room, but now that puts Josh at greater risk of picking up

0:04:460:04:51

an infection that could make him seriously ill.

0:04:510:04:55

I don't want to be poorly because I don't...

0:04:550:04:57

Cos it's harder to share a room when Josh's poorly.

0:04:570:05:01

In the night, his pump beeps when I try to get to sleep.

0:05:010:05:06

But if I've got a cold or something, I can't go near Josh.

0:05:060:05:10

It's really hard.

0:05:100:05:13

By any measure, this family has been through the mill.

0:05:130:05:16

We're going to try and give them a home which will help them cope with whatever comes next.

0:05:160:05:22

What about you two? Let's find out about a bit out about you first.

0:05:220:05:26

Jessica, what sort of things do you do in your spare time?

0:05:260:05:29

-I like drawing.

-Are you a member of any clubs or anything?

-Cubs.

0:05:290:05:34

You're in the Cubs? What about you?

0:05:340:05:38

You're a bit busy, going backwards and forwards to the hospital.

0:05:380:05:41

-I like sports.

-What's your favourite sport?

-Anything with a ball.

-OK.

0:05:410:05:47

-Let's find out what you want. What do you need?

-Storage. Josh's medicines and his equipment

0:05:470:05:52

take up most of the kitchen and Josh and Jessica can't share a bedroom

0:05:520:05:57

because of Josh's condition anyway, but she's going to be ten next year

0:05:570:06:01

so somewhere for her to just go and gather her thoughts.

0:06:010:06:06

It strikes me that you're sort of getting to the end of your tether a little bit.

0:06:060:06:10

I am. I am.

0:06:100:06:12

I'm tired. I just want to be their mum.

0:06:130:06:18

And it's been really hard.

0:06:180:06:23

I can see how it would get to you as well. We'll try and give you the best possible house that we can.

0:06:230:06:28

There's nothing to pack now because it's an empty house.

0:06:280:06:32

-Where is it all?

-At the dump.

-At the dump?!

0:06:320:06:36

-THEY LAUGH

-You're not supposed to say that!

0:06:360:06:39

Kids, you can't trust them to come up with the right story, can you?

0:06:400:06:44

So it's goodbye to the family, hello, trades people.

0:06:440:06:48

It's freezing cold and it's nearly the shortest day of the year.

0:06:480:06:52

But the support were getting is amazing.

0:06:520:06:55

Who's in charge? THEY LAUGH

0:06:550:06:59

So Billy's here and so is the rest of the team, eventually.

0:07:000:07:05

-What kind you call this?

-Ten o'clock.

-Quarter two.

0:07:060:07:09

-What?

-Quarter to your supposed to be here.

-No. Ten o'clock.

0:07:090:07:13

I said I'd probably be early so try and make it.

0:07:130:07:16

As long as we're taking the casual attitude towards this job.

0:07:160:07:20

-I called, the director said ten o'clock.

-Don't you worry about it.

-I'm not worried about it.

0:07:200:07:25

Get out of the van.

0:07:270:07:28

Honestly, I hope they show our new designer a little more respect.

0:07:320:07:36

Gabrielle Blackman has worked on many big builds, collaborating with the other designers.

0:07:360:07:41

This week, she steps into the spotlight. Gabrielle's portfolio contains some incredible work.

0:07:410:07:47

If your yacht needs a revamp like this, she's your woman, but she is just as good at designing homes

0:07:470:07:53

that really work for the people that live in them.

0:07:530:07:56

It's got to be what they want because there's no point

0:07:560:08:00

in all of these lovely trades doing all this work and then me putting something stupid

0:08:000:08:04

and controversial in that they won't like.

0:08:040:08:07

The only thing we don't want is white, glossy minimalist,

0:08:070:08:11

is not them at all. They want a cosy family home.

0:08:110:08:14

Why do you think they don't want white glossy?

0:08:140:08:17

We don't want anything to do with hospital in this house.

0:08:170:08:20

I just want it to be a cosy home and nothing that feels clinical or cold.

0:08:200:08:26

-We're not going to have any of that.

-That's a very good point.

0:08:260:08:30

I was just about to explain that we call Gabrielle "Gabriel",

0:08:300:08:34

-when you would think it would be "Gabri-elle".

-Gabi is fine.

0:08:340:08:39

I've even got it written on my hat. I've given up now.

0:08:390:08:42

Why did your parents call you "Gabriel" rather than "Gabri-elle"?

0:08:420:08:46

-I don't know. It's cos... Yeah, an angel thing.

-Gabriel the Angel?

0:08:460:08:52

She's a little angel.

0:08:520:08:55

Aw! Here's Gabrielle's heavenly plan. At the front of the house,

0:08:550:08:59

a new wall will give Jess that much-needed room of her own.

0:08:590:09:03

That will make the living room smaller, so we're moving another wall to make up for it,

0:09:030:09:08

and adding a window, creating a cosy haven for the family to relax in.

0:09:080:09:12

At the back comes the big change.

0:09:120:09:15

We're adding a kitchen diner where the family can be together.

0:09:150:09:19

Where the kitchen was, it will be a utility room

0:09:190:09:23

with lots of storage for all Josh's medical staff.

0:09:230:09:26

Finally a small extension to Sarah and Paul's room will add more space

0:09:260:09:30

and an en suite.

0:09:300:09:33

And Gabrielle spoke unto them and said, "Knock those walls down."

0:09:350:09:39

And Lo! It came to pass.

0:09:390:09:42

We've started at breakneck pace but I've always got time to say hello to a fan.

0:09:460:09:52

-New motor, is it?

-It's for my wife. She's a big fan of yours, Tony.

0:09:520:09:57

Tony?!

0:09:570:09:59

Tony Knowles.

0:09:590:10:00

THEY LAUGH

0:10:000:10:02

That's nice(!) You think you've built a career, eh?

0:10:020:10:05

This pile of wood is the shell of the new extension.

0:10:050:10:08

When I was a lad, extensions took weeks to build. Not any more.

0:10:080:10:12

-How fast is this going to go up and get together?

-We hope to finish this today.

-Really?

0:10:120:10:17

-Not including the roof bit?

-Yes.

0:10:170:10:20

-Including the roof joists where we're cutting into this?

-If we get a good run of it, yes.

0:10:200:10:24

As long as we stop interrupting you, basically. All right, fair enough.

0:10:240:10:27

Just hours in and were making real progress

0:10:270:10:30

but every chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Oh, here we go.

0:10:300:10:35

Let me ask you a question. What's in there?

0:10:350:10:38

That's the bathroom. We're not supposed to go in there.

0:10:380:10:42

Who drilled into the wall into the new bathroom and broke the tiles?

0:10:420:10:45

That was so unlucky. I was that far out of being lucky.

0:10:450:10:50

-But you weren't.

-I weren't, I was unlucky.

0:10:500:10:53

You can't make an omelette without breaking eggs, son.

0:10:530:10:58

It's a hell of an omelette when you're around.

0:10:580:11:01

Thankfully, there's plenty of people on site that do know what they're doing.

0:11:010:11:06

43 on day one alone, all giving us their time, skill and support.

0:11:060:11:11

You can be round the corner and not know what trauma some families go through.

0:11:110:11:15

People are here for a good cause as opposed to earning a living.

0:11:150:11:20

It's hard out there and people have come in. It's like a breath of fresh air.

0:11:200:11:24

It's great.

0:11:240:11:27

Great laugh, good people and it will be great just to see them happy at the end of it.

0:11:270:11:32

Why did you decide to come and join in and help out?

0:11:320:11:36

You could have been somewhere else earning a lot more money.

0:11:360:11:39

I could have been but I found out the little boy had liver cancer.

0:11:390:11:42

I've just finished a course of chemotherapy for cancer.

0:11:420:11:46

-Oh, have you?

-I have. So I know how important it is to get help.

0:11:460:11:50

How are you doing now?

0:11:500:11:53

-Yeah, still waiting for the final results but everything's looking good. It's all positive.

-Good.

0:11:530:11:58

-You understand the need for a clean and tidy home.

-Absolutely.

0:11:580:12:01

-A safe environment.

-I do, yeah.

0:12:010:12:03

-But you're happy to come along and help out.

-More than happy. Yeah.

0:12:030:12:07

-Thanks very much.

-Wouldn't have it any other way.

-Really appreciate it.

0:12:070:12:11

'Aren't people amazing?

0:12:110:12:14

'We've been here a few hours, but already I've noticed something.

0:12:140:12:17

'If you stand on this scaffold long enough, something unusual will fly over.

0:12:170:12:22

'It's probably on its way to land at one of Josh's favourite places,

0:12:220:12:26

'the Imperial War Museum's plane collection.

0:12:260:12:29

'He loves walking around here. Look around, you can see why.'

0:12:290:12:33

I hear you've been back into hospital again. How did it go?

0:12:330:12:38

-I had to have a needle in my leg.

-Did you? I bet that's not very nice.

0:12:380:12:44

-No.

-How did he manage yesterday?

0:12:440:12:48

He wasn't too bad, but you know that he's really frightened

0:12:480:12:52

because his blood pressure went through the roof.

0:12:520:12:55

They had try and let him calm down a little bit and leave him

0:12:550:12:58

until he could calm down and then they put the needle in there.

0:12:580:13:02

Basically so he can have an injection in his leg

0:13:020:13:06

over the next few days to lift his blood count.

0:13:060:13:10

-How are you feeling now?

-Fine.

-Fine?

-Yes.

0:13:100:13:14

When do you feel unwell then?

0:13:140:13:17

When I've had chemo and sometimes when I've had anti-sickness drugs.

0:13:170:13:25

How does it make you feel?

0:13:250:13:29

A bit tired and worried.

0:13:290:13:33

-What makes you happy?

-Going home.

0:13:330:13:36

Going home makes you happy?

0:13:360:13:38

I suppose you have do spend a long time at the hospital.

0:13:380:13:42

-Yes.

-How much do you look forward to going home?

-A lot.

0:13:420:13:48

-What part of your house do you like the best?

-My bedroom.

-Do you?

0:13:480:13:52

-Even though you have to share it?

-Yes.

0:13:520:13:55

-Would you like to have a bedroom all of your own?

-Yes.

-Why would that be cool?

0:13:550:13:59

-So I get some peace and I can play with my toys a bit more.

-Right.

0:13:590:14:05

I can see how that would work.

0:14:050:14:08

-Anything less than that and we are in trouble?

-Yes!

0:14:080:14:12

'Well, we'd better get on with it then. Wow! That really is getting on with it.

0:14:180:14:22

'We all know that when it gets dark, scary things come out to play.'

0:14:220:14:26

There was nothing here this morning.

0:14:260:14:29

This is day one of the job and we actually didn't start building

0:14:290:14:33

until nearly 10:30, 11 o'clock this morning.

0:14:330:14:36

So really, they've put a timber frame extension up,

0:14:360:14:39

two-thirds of the way through the roof.

0:14:390:14:42

The flat roof's gone on over there. I tell you what, this is a seriously good team.

0:14:420:14:47

It's like having a gargoyle on the roof, isn't it?

0:14:470:14:52

So, outside, it's all about what's gone up.

0:14:520:14:55

Inside, it's all about what's come down.

0:14:550:14:59

Most of the walls by the look of it.

0:14:590:15:02

It may seem scary but it's all part of the plan. Well, they say it's all part of the plan(!)

0:15:020:15:08

Ladies and gentlemen, for your entertainment, God Save The Queen played on a saw.

0:15:080:15:14

HE PLAYS GOD SAVE THE QUEEN

0:15:140:15:18

HE CONTINUES PLAYING

0:15:260:15:29

Genius! If you think that's good, you should see what he can do with a hammer.

0:15:370:15:42

Day two and the brickies have arrived.

0:15:450:15:50

We're adding a lot of space but most rooms will still be quite small.

0:15:500:15:53

In the lounge, Gabrielle has to find room for a fire, a sofa and one of her pet hates.

0:15:530:15:59

Designers don't really like TVs because they don't look very nice.

0:15:590:16:03

It's not a very attractive thing to have in the sitting room.

0:16:030:16:07

It's so important in this house, particularly for Josh.

0:16:070:16:11

Part of him getting better and recuperating is that he needs

0:16:110:16:14

to be comfortable and I can see him lying on the sofa here,

0:16:140:16:18

watching the TV, and it's really important that all works,

0:16:180:16:21

the room still looks... this lovely, elegant sitting-room that Sarah wants.

0:16:210:16:26

We're just trying to make that happen.

0:16:260:16:28

You need to make it happen fast

0:16:280:16:30

because the plasterers are chomping at the bit.

0:16:300:16:33

We want to chase these door linings up. Get the door linings on.

0:16:330:16:37

And then we've got two rooms we can skim this afternoon.

0:16:370:16:40

We're catching everyone up.

0:16:400:16:42

Up on the scaffold, two roofs are about to be made one.

0:16:450:16:48

We're ready to get the roof done,

0:16:480:16:51

trying to get it covered in because it looks fine now,

0:16:510:16:54

but it was raining earlier, so we can't take any chances.

0:16:540:16:58

Down below, Jules has solved some problems I don't quite understand.

0:16:580:17:02

He got us out of a large problem there.

0:17:110:17:14

'Aw, that's better.

0:17:180:17:20

'Everyone needs a hug now and again and I mean everyone.'

0:17:200:17:26

You now. Aw!

0:17:260:17:28

It's working for me.

0:17:290:17:32

-I feel better now.

-Do you feel better?

-I feel better now.

0:17:340:17:37

-Ah, lovely. How does that feel?

-Yeah, it's nice.

-Where's his hand?

0:17:440:17:49

Get off!

0:17:490:17:51

When Josh became ill, Sarah knew that both her children were going to need a lot of support.

0:17:560:18:01

She knew that both her and Paul would be away for months

0:18:040:18:07

while Josh was in hospital, so she asked her three best friends,

0:18:070:18:12

Helen, Lara and Julia to get together and look after Jess.

0:18:120:18:17

She went in to organise mode and said this is what I would like.

0:18:170:18:21

She spoke to all of us individually. Got us all together.

0:18:210:18:25

That's a lot of trust and an amazing friendship, that she could come to you with something so important.

0:18:250:18:30

-I think she knew it wouldn't be an issue.

-It wasn't an issue.

0:18:300:18:33

There was no second thought. It was just absolutely fine.

0:18:330:18:37

But it also made us feel that we were doing some good.

0:18:370:18:41

-Something to help.

-Something to help. You feel helpless.

0:18:410:18:45

You know that they're in hospital, to know that they're doing something, she could go there

0:18:450:18:50

and not worry about Jessica, because she was OK and she was with us.

0:18:500:18:55

-It helped us too.

-When I was talking to her the other day,

0:18:550:18:59

I was watching her and I said, "You're pretty near the end of your tether" and she said, "Yes, I am."

0:18:590:19:05

She stayed with us last week.

0:19:050:19:09

I think she's ready for that end and the end of the chemo

0:19:090:19:14

and just really start looking ahead and just having that family

0:19:140:19:18

back together and protecting them all in the same environment

0:19:180:19:22

and having a home again.

0:19:220:19:25

And what a home it's going to be,

0:19:250:19:29

thanks to the hard work of all these people.

0:19:290:19:31

It makes you feel all warm inside. Perhaps that's why the hugging just won't stop.

0:19:310:19:36

Look at Nigel over there. Safety glasses, obviously, because he's health and safety officer.

0:19:390:19:43

There's another one going on now, look.

0:19:430:19:47

'I was slightly worried about what I've started here.

0:19:490:19:52

'As the sun sets at about 2:45, the timber frame is finished,

0:19:520:19:57

'ready to be felted and tiled tomorrow.'

0:19:570:19:59

-Thank you.

-It's been emotional. Show some of that man love!

0:19:590:20:03

-Aww!

-This hugging's catching on, isn't it?

0:20:030:20:05

LAUGHTER

0:20:050:20:06

-See you later.

-Cheers, guys. Thanks a lot. Take care, Cheers.

0:20:060:20:09

Cubs, do your best.

0:20:120:20:15

ALL SHOUT IN UNISON: We will do our best.

0:20:150:20:21

I'm not sure what's harder - a day on the building site

0:20:210:20:24

or the nine-mile walk that Jess and her cub pack are doing today.

0:20:240:20:28

Sometimes it's easy to forget just how much a child's illness

0:20:280:20:32

can affect their brothers and sisters.

0:20:320:20:35

This is very cool, isn't it? This place that you're camping in.

0:20:350:20:38

Actually, I was worried about you camping outside in the open

0:20:380:20:41

but this is actually quite warm and nice and twinkly in here, isn't it?

0:20:410:20:45

It's been really difficult, the last...what,

0:20:450:20:47

-I suppose about six months, hasn't it?

-Mm-hmm.

0:20:470:20:50

So tell us what's been going on.

0:20:500:20:52

Well, we just, kind of...

0:20:520:20:57

-just keep going.

-Do you worry about Josh?

0:20:570:21:00

Yes, I do. I'm scared quite a lot what's going to happen to him.

0:21:000:21:06

Because I just don't like being away from Josh and Mum and Dad.

0:21:060:21:13

-And has that had to happen a lot?

-Yeah.

-When does that happen?

0:21:130:21:17

Like when they go to Birmingham,

0:21:170:21:20

when they go to hospital. Um...that kind of stuff.

0:21:200:21:24

You know Mum and Dad are a bit worried they haven't paid enough attention to you

0:21:240:21:28

-cos they've had to look after Josh, do you know that?

-Yeah.

0:21:280:21:30

-And how do you know that?

-Because they always tell me.

0:21:300:21:33

-Do they?

-Yeah.

-But you understand?

-Yeah, I do.

0:21:330:21:38

If I was a genie and I could grant three wishes,

0:21:380:21:42

what would those three wishes be?

0:21:420:21:45

Well, one to get Josh better and the family happy.

0:21:450:21:51

And then two, if I could have my own bedroom

0:21:510:21:54

and everyone...and the whole house really nice.

0:21:540:21:59

-You've still got a wish left.

-Um...to be normal.

0:21:590:22:06

For everything to be normal again? Mmm.

0:22:060:22:10

-Is it fun when you come away to something like this?

-Um...

0:22:100:22:13

-Does it take your minds off things for a little while?

-Yeah.

-Does it?

0:22:130:22:16

Yeah. It does.

0:22:160:22:19

-See you, everyone. See you soon. Bye.

-ALL: Bye!

0:22:210:22:24

HE LAUGHS

0:22:240:22:26

Now, I don't want to tempt fate

0:22:310:22:33

but we might be about to make one of those wishes come true.

0:22:330:22:38

I'm not quite sure what I'm most impressed with at the moment.

0:22:380:22:41

The fact that we have a bedroom here for Jessica

0:22:410:22:43

which is all she's ever wanted for the last few years

0:22:430:22:46

or that it's plastered along with this room

0:22:460:22:49

which is already plastered which is pretty incredible

0:22:490:22:53

or that if you follow me through the utility room,

0:22:530:22:59

we now have an extension which is about 40% extra house for them

0:22:590:23:04

and isn't it beautiful? And all this in just two days.

0:23:040:23:07

The bricklayers are doing so well, they've started taking walls down to give themselves something to do.

0:23:140:23:19

This will be the new living room window.

0:23:190:23:24

-So what's the plan today?

-We'll get this insulated out and then plasterboarded

0:23:240:23:27

and then get it all skimmed out hopefully.

0:23:270:23:29

We'll come back tomorrow if not.

0:23:290:23:31

-Depends what the little fella... What's his name again?

-Who?

0:23:310:23:35

-He told us what to do. Is he Irish?

-Mark.

-Or Scottish.

0:23:350:23:40

Look, I'll... Describe him again. Go on, go on!

0:23:400:23:44

I just said the little fella.

0:23:440:23:45

-What's going on?

-He said, "Where's the little..." No, I didn't mean that. Where's...

0:23:450:23:49

I said, "Do you know..."

0:23:490:23:50

-What did you just say?

-I said...

-What did you just say?

0:23:500:23:53

-I said "little fella" but I didn't mean it like that. I forgot your name, sorry.

-Little Mark.

0:23:530:23:56

LAUGHTER

0:23:560:23:59

Or to give him his full title, Project Manager Little Mark.

0:23:590:24:04

He must be doing something right because the roof is taking shape.

0:24:040:24:08

-You all right, son?

-Getting there.

0:24:080:24:11

And he's managed to find this gas fitter

0:24:120:24:15

who I think is one of the smartest, most handsome tradesmen

0:24:150:24:19

I've ever met. Not that I'm biased(!)

0:24:190:24:21

-Have you met my nephew?

-I have.

-What do you think?

0:24:210:24:24

LAUGHTER

0:24:260:24:27

You can tell by the vacant stare!

0:24:270:24:31

That was a bit harsh, wasn't it? Now in the past we've had to intervene

0:24:310:24:34

and stop tradespeople from physically attacking our designer.

0:24:340:24:37

Fortunately, Gaby seems to know how to get on with everyone.

0:24:370:24:40

-So you've enjoyed yourself so far?

-I'm really enjoying it and it's just going...

0:24:410:24:45

-Oh no, I can't say going well cos we'll be doomed.

-No, we don't do that.

0:24:450:24:48

We don't say that too early. Paint a picture for us. What will it look like?

0:24:480:24:52

Here we've got a lovely fire going in over there.

0:24:520:24:54

-Lovely.

-So they've got a centrepiece there.

0:24:540:24:57

Imaginary armchairs that we don't yet have here.

0:24:570:25:00

Still struggling to get hold of those?

0:25:000:25:02

The budget is a nightmare on this one.

0:25:020:25:04

We've got no appliances and no chairs.

0:25:040:25:06

Yeah, we have - a brand-new boiler so their bills will be cheaper.

0:25:060:25:09

I know but if we've got no washing machines and stuff...

0:25:090:25:15

-so I'm a bit stressed about that.

-HE CLEARS HIS THROAT

-So you should be.

0:25:150:25:18

-Should've had that organised by now, shouldn't you?

-Yes.

0:25:180:25:21

Don't worry, I'm only playing.

0:25:210:25:24

Let's hope all the disruption we're causing the Behan family

0:25:240:25:27

is going to pay off.

0:25:270:25:29

Since we moved in, they've been staying at Helen's

0:25:290:25:32

but wherever Josh is, his treatment doesn't stop.

0:25:320:25:36

Visits like this one from the district nurse

0:25:360:25:39

are part of his life now.

0:25:390:25:41

We only had two nights in hospital. Chemo went well.

0:25:410:25:45

He has been feeling quite sick these last few days

0:25:450:25:47

but at the moment, he's...he's OK.

0:25:470:25:51

Do you want me to get rid of all your rubbish?

0:25:510:25:54

You might think that being a nurse who works with cancer patients

0:25:540:25:57

would give Sarah an advantage when it comes to looking after Josh.

0:25:570:26:01

But it also means that she's all too aware of the challenges ahead.

0:26:020:26:07

There are days where I'm fine and think, "Everything's fine,

0:26:070:26:10

"we're getting through this," and other days where I realise

0:26:100:26:14

what Joshua has been through, we have been through as a family.

0:26:140:26:16

So what's the glue holding it all together?

0:26:160:26:19

The children have given me strength.

0:26:190:26:22

And I think the love of our family, actually.

0:26:220:26:26

We've realised what's important.

0:26:260:26:28

But now, my fear is the future and what it holds.

0:26:280:26:33

It's daring to hope.

0:26:330:26:36

Do you not... Y-you... You don't allow yourself to?

0:26:360:26:41

I do, but then I worry.

0:26:410:26:43

But, um...because we've had six months of sheer hell,

0:26:430:26:48

I can't explain my emotions that I've been through.

0:26:480:26:53

My heart has been so heavy, I just want it...

0:26:540:26:57

It's been pounding out of my chest

0:26:570:27:00

because I just want to get him well, I want to get him better,

0:27:000:27:03

I want him to have...the future that his little friends will have.

0:27:030:27:09

It just breaks my heart

0:27:090:27:11

and...to explain to somebody who's got children,

0:27:110:27:17

they would understand

0:27:170:27:20

but actually the deepest feelings you feel, it's so difficult to explain.

0:27:200:27:24

-So how important...is coming home?

-He doesn't feel safe in hospital.

0:27:240:27:30

All these bad things happened...

0:27:300:27:32

Well, not bad things but things that he doesn't like

0:27:320:27:35

happened to him in hospital. He feels safe at home and I want them

0:27:350:27:38

to feel safe and loved and warm.

0:27:380:27:41

So that's what we're working towards.

0:27:410:27:45

I'm always amazed at the fantastic turnout we get for Big Builds

0:27:450:27:48

but if you'd been waiting six months for a plumber,

0:27:480:27:51

you might be wondering how we find all these great tradespeople.

0:27:510:27:55

-How did we end up with him on site?

-I was driving up the motorway to have a look at this job

0:27:550:27:59

-and on the way I was listening to Radio 2.

-Yeah.

-And Ken Bruce was talking to him on the phone.

0:27:590:28:04

-Is that right?

-So he came on and did PopMaster.

0:28:040:28:07

-A bit of a pop genius, is he?

-Absolutely.

-I am, actually, yeah.

0:28:070:28:10

He got the worst score in 25 years' history of PopMaster.

0:28:100:28:15

I think I was set up cos no-one gets that score, really.

0:28:150:28:19

-What did you get?

-Two points.

-Out of?

-A possible 39.

0:28:190:28:23

THEY LAUGH

0:28:230:28:25

Ask him a pop question, any pop question you like, go on.

0:28:260:28:29

-Oh, my God.

-Step in here.

-Ah, see? Um...

0:28:290:28:32

-What?

-I can't even think of one.

0:28:320:28:34

-Exactly.

-It's difficult.

-When you've got 13 million people...

0:28:340:28:37

-Your questions were really easy that day cos I think I got 36.

-Oh, God.

0:28:370:28:42

-Most of the country got 36!

-I think so.

-Name me two Village People hits.

0:28:420:28:46

-YMCA, In The Navy.

-That's slightly worrying.

0:28:460:28:50

THEY LAUGH

0:28:500:28:52

Well, let's face it, you're not going to make your money on quiz shows.

0:28:520:28:56

-Oh, Patrick.

-Here you go, Patrick. Ask him any pop-related question.

0:28:560:29:02

He's known as the master of pop, he can answer almost any question.

0:29:020:29:05

Who sang:

0:29:050:29:06

# That was my heart years from now

0:29:060:29:11

# Love and pride

0:29:110:29:13

-The King.

-Yes!

-As bad as that, no-one!

0:29:130:29:16

LAUGHTER

0:29:160:29:18

Oh, come on!

0:29:180:29:19

So there you go. If you want to find great tradespeople,

0:29:200:29:24

listen to Radio 2.

0:29:240:29:26

This morning the extension looked like a shed inside.

0:29:260:29:29

Now it's looking like a room.

0:29:290:29:31

How will you plaster over the wires and get over that?

0:29:310:29:34

What we're going to do is run a batten - not this here obviously -

0:29:340:29:37

run a batten along the wall up there

0:29:370:29:39

all the way along the wall and make a little box.

0:29:390:29:42

We'll cut some timber onto it and just box the whole thing in

0:29:420:29:45

so Billy ran all his wires along there

0:29:450:29:47

and then the electricians ran all their wires along that side.

0:29:470:29:50

Look at the difference, look!

0:29:500:29:52

That one over there is a thing of beauty,

0:29:520:29:54

the wires just under the ceiling.

0:29:540:29:55

And then look at those ones up there.

0:29:550:29:59

-Not right, is he?

-He's not right, really. Bless him, we love him, love him, love him.

0:29:590:30:03

This is Andy, and before he was a plasterer, he was a chef.

0:30:030:30:08

And Paul was his boss.

0:30:080:30:10

-I wanted to have a chat with you about Paul.

-Yeah.

0:30:100:30:13

-Cos you've known him a while. How long have you known him?

-13 years.

0:30:130:30:16

How do you think you'd have done in the same circumstances?

0:30:160:30:19

Oh, I can't imagine it.

0:30:190:30:21

Cos my son comes over to play with Josh, and it's just, you know...

0:30:210:30:24

It's quite upsetting to think... You know, it's just a nightmare.

0:30:240:30:28

And he's such a brave kid, like. He's still smiling.

0:30:280:30:31

Paul sends us photos of him from the hospital and always still smiling and stuff, you know?

0:30:310:30:35

-What do you make of what's going on here then?

-Brilliant. And it'll change their lives.

0:30:350:30:40

Now, see that frost? That's how cold it is.

0:30:420:30:44

Certain days are important from a plastering point of view,

0:30:440:30:48

and it's Chris in charge. And today is that day.

0:30:480:30:51

This was done prior to us arriving,

0:30:510:30:53

and now we need to make this floor the same level as existing.

0:30:530:30:57

So, apparently, we have a superfast-setting concrete floor coming at two o'clock.

0:30:570:31:03

The boys will get this in, and that's why we need to get that plastered.

0:31:030:31:06

They can't go in and out then plaster it, cos there's too many of them.

0:31:060:31:09

So you've just got to feed them.

0:31:090:31:11

Feed them plaster, feed them tea.

0:31:110:31:13

And they'll look after their own room.

0:31:130:31:16

Perhaps the reason the job is going so well is because the house is a bungalow.

0:31:180:31:21

-That's just one story!

-NICK LAUGHS

0:31:210:31:23

Do you see what I did there? Really?!

0:31:230:31:26

-Do you like working on bungalows?

-I love 'em!

0:31:260:31:28

You're at a stage of life where you could move into a bungalow!

0:31:280:31:31

Well, I don't understand it, people calling me Bungalow Bill.

0:31:310:31:35

-I don't understand that.

-That's cos there's nothing up top!

0:31:350:31:37

THEY LAUGH

0:31:370:31:39

Here's the superfast-setting concrete known as screed.

0:31:410:31:45

It can't go into the big extension until the plasterers come out,

0:31:450:31:49

and if that doesn't happen soon, it'll set solid.

0:31:490:31:52

-Tick, tick, tick, tick, tick.

-I know, I know. We're under pressure.

0:31:530:31:56

We've got to get them in tonight, cos this floor has got to be dry and ready for tomorrow.

0:31:560:32:00

We've got floor-fitters, we've got kitchens coming in and stuff...

0:32:000:32:03

but the pressure's on, boys!

0:32:030:32:06

The pressure's on, lads!

0:32:060:32:07

Ten, nine, eight, seven, six...

0:32:090:32:12

I'm not sure he's helping!

0:32:120:32:14

Billy is loading a barrow, whether the plasterers are ready or not.

0:32:140:32:18

Now, we make fun of Billy, but when it comes to building, he really knows his stuff.

0:32:180:32:22

Listen to this.

0:32:220:32:23

They put fibre in it,

0:32:230:32:25

and the fibre helps it to...

0:32:250:32:28

-Bond together.

-Bond together.

0:32:280:32:31

If you say it quieter, then it seems as if it's coming from me, right?

0:32:310:32:34

So, they put the fibre in. It reads how much...

0:32:340:32:37

of the creed... Screed? Screed.

0:32:370:32:40

And then it just puts a load of fibre in.

0:32:400:32:42

We thought it would be a lot of fibre.

0:32:420:32:44

The fibre helps the screed bond together.

0:32:440:32:48

HE LAUGHS

0:32:490:32:51

If you believe that, you believe anything I say!

0:32:510:32:53

What did I tell you? He's a font of knowledge, that man.

0:32:530:32:58

-All right, gentlemen?

-Hello, mate.

-How's it going?

-Aye, good, thanks. Last wall now.

0:32:580:33:02

Mate, you've got there, look.

0:33:020:33:04

Timing to...perfection.

0:33:040:33:07

-Well done, boys! Thank you.

-No worries. Thanks.

0:33:070:33:10

So, that's the screed down, and there's more good news.

0:33:110:33:15

Up on the scaffold, EVERYTHING is finished.

0:33:150:33:17

MARK: Lovely job.

0:33:170:33:18

If you're in the area again, we'll help you out again.

0:33:180:33:21

Rough diamonds, that's what they are.

0:33:210:33:24

We're turning a corner.

0:33:240:33:25

This place feels less like a building site and more like a home.

0:33:250:33:28

Boys came in here and started at 6.30 this morning.

0:33:280:33:31

Got the hallway in, dropping through the kitchen,

0:33:310:33:33

so that when the kitchen arrives at 11 o'clock or so...

0:33:330:33:37

-All right, Ian? All right? All right?!

-No!

-What's wrong with you?

0:33:370:33:41

Under pressure!

0:33:410:33:42

-All right, John? Are you under pressure?

-Yeah, always!

0:33:440:33:47

Drama queens, the pair of them. Absolute drama queens.

0:33:480:33:52

That's rich coming from you!

0:33:520:33:54

It's been bitterly cold this week,

0:33:560:33:59

but that hasn't stopped John - another friend of Paul and Sarah's.

0:33:590:34:02

Here's his idea of an easy day's work.

0:34:020:34:05

Screed away.

0:34:050:34:07

..finish the patio off.

0:34:070:34:09

I've only just started the patio, but finish it off.

0:34:090:34:11

Get the path running, hopefully.

0:34:130:34:15

And start prepping for the turf and the finish.

0:34:170:34:21

We're here till the end. Till the bitter end!

0:34:210:34:24

And they've been here since the start.

0:34:240:34:26

This is make-or-break time for Gaby as the design comes together.

0:34:260:34:30

She's got to be all over everything. No pressure, then.

0:34:300:34:33

How are you finding it?

0:34:330:34:35

I want this house to be perfect for them, and it really stresses me out,

0:34:350:34:38

because I'm just worried... about every little detail.

0:34:380:34:41

And it's really important to me as well that if I do my job right,

0:34:410:34:46

then all this hard work these guys have done for nothing pays off.

0:34:460:34:50

But if I get it wrong, just by choosing the wrong wallpaper

0:34:500:34:54

or putting some furniture they don't like in,

0:34:540:34:57

then I've ruined it all!

0:34:570:34:59

-Yes.

-So that's my worry.

-No, you have.

0:34:590:35:01

-No, you have.

-And I know you like to...

0:35:010:35:03

LAUGHTER

0:35:030:35:05

They're all working their socks off for this family.

0:35:050:35:08

And working over two weekends. Actually, Mark has got a sock there.

0:35:080:35:12

-He's done his work so hard...

-My socks have come off!

-His sock has actually come off.

0:35:120:35:16

Aw, she cares so much.

0:35:160:35:20

Everyone here does. I love it. But she's right.

0:35:200:35:23

It's all about building a house that will help the family face the challenges of the future.

0:35:230:35:27

-Have you heard about the family?

-Yes, a little bit. Liver transplant?

0:35:290:35:33

Yeah. Little Josh has got cancer and it's been really...

0:35:330:35:37

-..really rubbish for him, actually.

-Yeah, well yeah.

0:35:370:35:40

Yeah, so I've made it even more important to do it, really.

0:35:400:35:43

-Yeah.

-Cos my daughter died from it, so...

0:35:430:35:46

-Well, not liver cancer, she had neuroblastoma.

-Oh, man.

0:35:460:35:49

So, it's nice to give something back for a change.

0:35:490:35:53

Doing up someone's house like this, with the experience that you've got,

0:35:530:35:57

I mean, your home is really important, isn't it?

0:35:570:35:59

Oh crumbs, yeah. That's the place you want to be.

0:35:590:36:02

-It's just nice to come home and it be tidy.

-Yeah.

0:36:020:36:06

Cos you have so many - I don't know about little Josh, what he had,

0:36:060:36:08

but we had so many drugs in the house.

0:36:080:36:11

We had to have a cupboard on the walls, lockable and all that.

0:36:110:36:13

And a list of what time we had to give her drugs and all that sort of thing.

0:36:130:36:18

To have it all neat and tidy and where you want it, it's just something less to worry about.

0:36:180:36:22

It's good hearing you say that, cos Sarah, she's a nurse as well,

0:36:220:36:26

and I think for her, her way of copway of coping with it

0:36:260:36:29

is just to try and organise everything,

0:36:290:36:31

just at least feel a little bit in control.

0:36:310:36:33

-Yeah, control, that's the one thing, because you've got no control.

-No.

0:36:330:36:37

You haven't got any control. You've got a little bit of control at home about what you're doing and all that.

0:36:370:36:42

But the end result you've got no control over.

0:36:420:36:44

To come home and it be sorted, it just... makes it so much easier.

0:36:440:36:49

That sense of being out of control is very hard for any parent.

0:36:490:36:54

But especially, I think, for fathers who feel it's their duty,

0:36:540:36:57

their job perhaps, to protect the family

0:36:570:36:59

and make things right, fix everything.

0:36:590:37:03

So how does Paul feel about the people helping to fix the house?

0:37:030:37:06

I'm humbled. I'm slightly embarrassed by it because these people,

0:37:060:37:12

it's tough times and they're giving up a week,

0:37:120:37:15

two weeks of their own time, their own money.

0:37:150:37:18

And, eh... It must be difficult. We appreciate it.

0:37:180:37:22

I mean, we're just very humbled by it all.

0:37:220:37:25

So if you walk back into the house that you need, how does life change?

0:37:270:37:31

It's just to give Josh the space that is needed to look after him

0:37:310:37:35

on a day-to-day basis, somewhere he can get away from things, which he will need to do.

0:37:350:37:40

There's going to be tough times for him. And with the drugs he is on,

0:37:400:37:43

each time they might change a dose or try a different drug,

0:37:430:37:48

there are side effects which we perhaps didn't really know about.

0:37:480:37:53

Em... Some of his hearing is starting to go,

0:37:530:37:56

which means now he'll probably need hearing aids for school and stuff like that.

0:37:560:38:01

So that's another hurdle he has to overcome.

0:38:010:38:04

Em... his heart has to be monitored and his kidneys also

0:38:040:38:08

can fail through the chemotherapy drugs they administer.

0:38:080:38:12

But the thing that gives us hope, we see other children

0:38:120:38:14

who have progressed through all this who have perhaps been more advanced

0:38:140:38:18

than Josh is in terms of their treatment,

0:38:180:38:21

and you think, well, that will be him hopefully in a year or two.

0:38:210:38:25

And while he is recovering,

0:38:250:38:27

we want to make Josh's room a safe haven for him.

0:38:270:38:30

Because he'll spend much time here,

0:38:300:38:33

it also needs to be a fun place to be.

0:38:330:38:35

So we built this - bed on top, den underneath.

0:38:350:38:38

And who better to judge it than our very own chubby-cheeked little toddler Jules?

0:38:380:38:43

Even I can fit in this den.

0:38:460:38:48

-Has it looking?

-Great, mate.

0:38:480:38:50

Nice little den. I was saying, if this was my bed,

0:38:500:38:53

I know it's handy for storage, but if I was little 'un

0:38:530:38:55

I'd want to be crawling round inside and make a den under there.

0:38:550:38:58

I'd have loved a den like that when I was that age.

0:38:580:39:01

I'd love a den like that now.

0:39:010:39:04

-Have you not got a shed?

-Most men have a shed, don't they? Do you have a shed?

0:39:040:39:07

-I've got four sheds.

-You've got four sheds?

0:39:070:39:09

-Four sheds and a garage.

-I've only got two.

0:39:090:39:13

-And a bike shed and a woodshed.

-I haven't got a shed.

0:39:130:39:16

-Have you not? Mate, get yourself a shed.

-Haven't you got a shed, Matt?

0:39:160:39:19

-Yeah, I got two.

-Billy's got a shed but he's got a bar in his shed.

0:39:190:39:23

Have you - Oi, Bill, have you got a bar in your shed?

0:39:230:39:26

Mm. When we have barbecues, we can have the door open.

0:39:260:39:30

Oh, so he doesn't have a shed for pottering in?

0:39:300:39:32

He has got a shed at the back of it, which is your space, isn't it, where your tools are?

0:39:320:39:36

Yeah, all my tools. Then I've got the brick shed for the other stuff.

0:39:360:39:39

-So you've got three sheds?

-Why don't you have a shed then?

0:39:390:39:42

Well, cos... cos I don't potter.

0:39:420:39:45

Haven't you got a place you go, phew?

0:39:450:39:47

Yeah, you've got to have a phew place.

0:39:470:39:50

-That's why you're too tense.

-You think?

0:39:500:39:53

-Because you don't potter.

-What makes you think I'm too tense?

0:39:530:39:56

-What makes you think I'm too tense?!

-I rest my case.

0:39:560:39:59

-What are you talking about? When have I ever been tense?

-Exactly.

0:39:590:40:02

We know why... At night you go to bed thinking you're a wigwam,

0:40:020:40:06

and when you wake up in the morning you feel like you're a teepee,

0:40:060:40:10

so you're two tents! Two tents!

0:40:100:40:12

LAUGHTER

0:40:120:40:14

'It was like being run over like a steamroller, wasn't it?'

0:40:140:40:17

You could see it coming a long way off, but there was nothing you could do to stop it.

0:40:170:40:21

Remember, this is more than a kitchen they're making here.

0:40:210:40:25

There will be extra storage

0:40:250:40:26

for all Joss's medicines and somewhere to prepare them.

0:40:260:40:29

But to make sure it doesn't feel clinical, these gentlemen have built

0:40:290:40:33

this table and shelves from scratch using reclaimed timber.

0:40:330:40:36

And they look great. Everything has to be finished today.

0:40:360:40:39

And there's 32 people on site trying to get it all done,

0:40:390:40:44

most of them in here.

0:40:440:40:46

-How are we doing with the kitchen?

-I think it's going all right.

0:40:460:40:49

There's not much space in here, but we're getting along nicely.

0:40:490:40:52

The spark's out and we'll all put things together.

0:40:520:40:54

We're all just mucking in together.

0:40:540:40:57

Hopefully, we'll be 99% there by tonight. That's the plan.

0:40:570:41:00

-Yeah?

-Show 'em your moustache.

-You've got a moustache?

0:41:000:41:04

-Yeah.

-What else have you got?

-LAUGHTER

-Teardrops, as well.

0:41:060:41:09

That's not right, is it?! It's not.

0:41:090:41:11

See what happens to people when they work with Bill?

0:41:110:41:13

He was probably a normal lad when he first started.

0:41:130:41:16

Can you rub that off?

0:41:160:41:18

-No. That is a tattoo.

-It's a tattoo?!

-Yeah.

0:41:180:41:21

-You had a moustache tattooed to your finger?

-Yeah.

0:41:210:41:24

So you could do what with it?

0:41:240:41:26

Just...

0:41:260:41:27

LAUGHTER

0:41:270:41:29

'If I say that's one of the maddest things I've ever seen

0:41:290:41:32

and that no-one's going to top that, you just know that someone will, don't you?

0:41:320:41:36

Can I come back in now?

0:41:380:41:40

Look.

0:41:400:41:41

"Love."

0:41:410:41:43

-Look what it says there. That's not going to come off.

-Oh.

0:41:430:41:47

Oh. Only doing it for the telly.

0:41:500:41:52

Who uses a permanent marker on your own face?!

0:41:550:41:59

After a week outside in weather that would leave a brass monkey in need of welding,

0:42:010:42:05

John's not going to let anyone damage his good work.

0:42:050:42:08

He's ready for a turf war.

0:42:080:42:10

You don't think you've gone too draconian with your sign?

0:42:100:42:13

Works either way, I think.

0:42:130:42:15

-You think?

-Yeah, it gets the message out.

-I think it does.

0:42:150:42:19

Gabrielle wants the new living room to be a cosy retreat for Josh

0:42:200:42:24

and family.

0:42:240:42:25

And it's all really starting to feel the part.

0:42:250:42:28

Wherever you turn, she's making sure that every detail of her traditional-

0:42:280:42:32

but-not-so-traditional-it-doesn't- look-great-in-a-bungalow design

0:42:320:42:36

comes together as planned.

0:42:360:42:39

-What do you think, Gabbers?

-Um...

0:42:390:42:42

I quite like it, actually, Mark. It works quite... Er...

0:42:430:42:47

No, it's not, it's lovely.

0:42:470:42:49

-You like it?

-It's lovely.

0:42:490:42:50

I think I'm being quite low maintenance today, don't you think?

0:42:500:42:53

Don't you think, Mark?

0:42:550:42:56

No?

0:42:560:42:58

I think that's what they call a telling silence.

0:42:580:43:01

But if anyone should have been getting the silent treatment,

0:43:010:43:05

it's Billy the bathroom wrecker.

0:43:050:43:08

-You've been doing the hearth?

-Yeah, that's all done.

-Lovely.

0:43:080:43:11

-Ready to go.

-Anything else?

0:43:110:43:13

-Splashback.

-Splashback.

-And change the tile.

0:43:130:43:16

A repair job where Billy drilled through the wall? Have you said thank you?

0:43:160:43:20

Thank you.

0:43:200:43:21

These boys have just tidied up your little...

0:43:210:43:24

-We took the tile out, didn't we?

-"We"?

-Yeah. John.

0:43:240:43:28

-I think you broke the tile, didn't you?

-Yeah.

0:43:280:43:30

Just two inches out, that's all it was, two inches out.

0:43:300:43:32

It doesn't matter whether it's two inches or a mile, Bill.

0:43:340:43:37

If it's wrong, it's wrong.

0:43:370:43:38

As this lot are finding out

0:43:400:43:42

with a fridge that just won't go where it should.

0:43:420:43:44

These need to be flush with the front of that unit.

0:43:440:43:47

-That's how you screw it into the unit.

-45 mil.

0:43:470:43:51

-And with 80 mil...

-ALL TALK OVER EACH OTHER

0:43:510:43:54

Got to come out and take it back again.

0:43:540:43:56

That's fantastic, isn't it?

0:43:560:43:58

You got guys who have brought the white goods along for us,

0:43:580:44:01

an electrician in on the conversation, two chippies,

0:44:010:44:03

and they've worked it out between them. And...

0:44:030:44:06

-Do you need an 'and? >

-No, thanks very much. We're all right, thanks, Bill.

0:44:060:44:10

We're not going to let him at it, are we?

0:44:110:44:14

'Next time there's a problem we just need everyone to put

0:44:140:44:17

their heads together and stress Gabrielle out completely.

0:44:170:44:20

Yeah, what's going on here? The island's in the wrong position.

0:44:220:44:27

It's too close because that corridor's too narrow.

0:44:270:44:30

If you bend in front of the oven like that, and bring a tray out of the oven,

0:44:300:44:33

you've got to turn. You need the turning space.

0:44:330:44:36

-Is it screwed to the floor?

-It's here.

0:44:370:44:39

This is centralised on the island, you see.

0:44:390:44:43

-We have to do something with that. Either we...

-No.

0:44:430:44:46

We put something with a hook on to take the light over.

0:44:460:44:48

That's going to be too short up there.

0:44:480:44:51

Can we move it along and see what it looks like?

0:44:510:44:54

Let's make a decision really quickly,

0:44:540:44:56

because there's one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight,

0:44:560:44:59

nine people standing over here who should be working.

0:44:590:45:01

-We've got to move it so let's...

-It's got to be moved.

0:45:010:45:04

Two, three...

0:45:040:45:05

Keep going, keep going, keep going. Yes!

0:45:050:45:09

Lie in there, get the extra key and give it slung down.

0:45:090:45:11

Get this kitchen finished. Come on. ALL: Yes.

0:45:110:45:14

Late into the night,

0:45:180:45:19

Gaby's still hard at it, sorting out the last details of the kitchen.

0:45:190:45:23

And there's one last hurdle. This worktop is attractive,

0:45:230:45:26

hard-wearing, hygienic

0:45:260:45:28

and can be bonded to form a single length.

0:45:280:45:31

Shame it doesn't fit.

0:45:310:45:33

Now we've got a problem with the splashback, as well.

0:45:340:45:38

Those walls are supposed to be in line with each other. That's...

0:45:380:45:41

-That's why...

-We need these worktops in tonight.

0:45:410:45:44

The boys have literary got an hour left.

0:45:440:45:47

-They're doing their best, let's just...

-Let's argue about it later.

0:45:470:45:50

Remember, lads,

0:45:500:45:52

measure twice, cut once.

0:45:520:45:55

Right. Let's cut this one.

0:45:550:45:57

Well, it wouldn't be a Big Build without a last-minute problem

0:45:590:46:02

and a late finish, would it?

0:46:020:46:05

Over the last few months,

0:46:090:46:11

the Behan family have had their world turned upside down.

0:46:110:46:15

I just want to be their mum.

0:46:150:46:16

It would be nice not to worry about the house,

0:46:160:46:19

just to come home, somewhere we can be safe.

0:46:190:46:21

And even after Josh's transplant,

0:46:210:46:23

they still have some big challenges ahead.

0:46:230:46:26

We treat every day as it comes. Some days are good, some days are bad.

0:46:260:46:30

If you could make everything better,

0:46:300:46:32

what would be the first thing on your list?

0:46:320:46:34

To make our family normal again.

0:46:340:46:38

Um, and just be happy.

0:46:380:46:41

So how much do you look forward to going home?

0:46:410:46:44

A lot.

0:46:440:46:46

But now they have one less thing to worry about.

0:46:460:46:50

Thanks to the incredible efforts of 110 tradesmen and women...

0:46:530:46:57

..we've given Josh a room of his own. It's comfortable and fun.

0:47:030:47:08

And it's somewhere to recover.

0:47:100:47:13

We've given Jess the room of her own she wanted

0:47:170:47:20

and needed so badly.

0:47:200:47:22

After the months she's spent staying with friends while Josh

0:47:240:47:28

was in hospital, at last she has a space of her own at home.

0:47:280:47:31

For Sarah and Paul,

0:47:350:47:37

there's somewhere comfortable to relax at last.

0:47:370:47:42

There's a cosy living room that has the traditional feel Sarah loves,

0:47:470:47:51

but still works in this modern bungalow.

0:47:510:47:54

And perhaps most important of all,

0:47:590:48:02

a kitchen-diner where the family can be together.

0:48:020:48:06

With storage space for all Josh's medicines

0:48:060:48:09

right in the centre of the house.

0:48:090:48:11

After all the difficulties of the last few months,

0:48:160:48:18

it's somewhere they can really enjoy coming home to.

0:48:180:48:23

What did you need?

0:48:380:48:39

Somewhere just to feel safe and normal,

0:48:390:48:43

just to have that sanctuary of home.

0:48:430:48:45

OK, well,

0:48:450:48:47

a lot of people worked very hard over a very short time

0:48:470:48:52

and I think they've done an amazing job

0:48:520:48:55

and I think they've given you what you need, so...

0:48:550:48:59

if you're ready?

0:48:590:49:01

Hm-hm

0:49:010:49:03

Open your eyes.

0:49:030:49:05

HE LAUGHS

0:49:050:49:06

Oh, my gosh!

0:49:090:49:11

-Wow.

-HE LAUGHS

0:49:110:49:13

It's beautiful.

0:49:160:49:17

-That is absolutely...

-It's absolutely beautiful.

0:49:190:49:23

It's stunning.

0:49:230:49:24

Probably of importance to you,

0:49:320:49:34

while we're in this part of the kitchen,

0:49:340:49:36

is if you walk into that part of the kitchen, which extends all the way through,

0:49:360:49:40

you've got an important storage space for you to put Josh's stuff.

0:49:400:49:43

This is the idea - to give you the space

0:49:430:49:46

to have all Josh's medical equipment

0:49:460:49:49

and have it available and a worktop to work on.

0:49:490:49:52

But not for it to dominate the whole house,

0:49:520:49:55

so it keeps all that under control.

0:49:550:49:57

It's... I never thought I'd have anything like this. Ever.

0:49:570:50:01

And it's just like home.

0:50:110:50:14

Oh! It's... Oh!

0:50:140:50:16

-HE LAUGHS

-Oh, deary me.

0:50:160:50:20

HE LAUGHS

0:50:200:50:23

SHE SOBS It's beautiful.

0:50:230:50:26

She's got it so everything is just beautiful.

0:50:260:50:29

It's perfect.

0:50:320:50:34

SHE SOBS It's... It's perfect is all I can say.

0:50:370:50:41

SHE GASPS

0:50:550:50:56

Oh. SHE LAUGHS

0:50:560:50:58

Look! Look!

0:51:060:51:08

So beautiful.

0:51:100:51:13

-Do you want to have a look in the cupboard behind you?

-Yep.

0:51:130:51:17

Open it.

0:51:170:51:19

Oh! HE LAUGHS

0:51:190:51:21

Nice. Lovely!

0:51:210:51:23

Nice to have, obviously, a lovely bedroom

0:51:230:51:26

and somewhere you can come and relax,

0:51:260:51:28

but not the most important thing to you, really, was it?

0:51:280:51:31

It was always going to be the living area and...

0:51:310:51:35

-Room for Jessica, space for Jessica.

-Right.

0:51:350:51:38

SHE GASPS

0:51:450:51:47

Oh, deary me!

0:51:470:51:48

It's lovely.

0:51:510:51:52

-Look at her tigers.

-Oh!

0:51:530:51:57

I'm going to cry again.

0:51:570:52:00

Oh, it's... Oh, she's got all her little arty bits.

0:52:010:52:05

It... Oh, she's going to love it.

0:52:050:52:08

Absolutely love it.

0:52:080:52:10

Oh, look at the little lamps with birds on them.

0:52:100:52:14

-Oh, that's beautiful.

-There's all the bits on the desk.

0:52:140:52:18

It's perfect.

0:52:180:52:20

This is beyond anything that we ever dreamed of, really.

0:52:200:52:24

It's exactly what we needed and exactly what we wanted,

0:52:240:52:27

but it's so much more.

0:52:270:52:30

-I just can't believe it.

-This is home.

0:52:320:52:35

That's all I can say - it's home.

0:52:350:52:38

And in here.

0:52:380:52:41

BOTH EXCLAIM

0:52:410:52:43

-Oh.

-Oh, look!

0:52:430:52:44

-He's going to go bonkers!

-HE LAUGHS

0:52:440:52:46

Oh, it's lovely!

0:52:490:52:50

SHE SOBS

0:52:570:52:58

It's beautiful. He'll love it. That's just what he...

0:52:580:53:01

SHE LAUGHS AND SOBS AT SAME TIME

0:53:010:53:03

It's beautiful.

0:53:110:53:12

SHE LAUGHS

0:53:180:53:20

It's just what he needs.

0:53:200:53:23

Space, all his little things.

0:53:250:53:27

-So it's a den for him, as well.

-Fantastic.

0:53:320:53:35

He can crawl underneath and play underneath

0:53:350:53:37

and there's all kinds of things for him to play with in his den.

0:53:370:53:40

There's also, just here....

0:53:400:53:43

-..an extendable mattress which goes out flat.

-Oh, lovely.

0:53:430:53:46

You know sometimes you like to lay in here with him.

0:53:460:53:49

Yeah.

0:53:490:53:51

The other point about the bed being this way,

0:53:540:53:56

-A, it's great fun for him to climb up.

-Yes.

0:53:560:53:59

Also, if he's feeling unwell,

0:53:590:54:02

you'll find it's exactly the right height for him to lift him without hurting your back.

0:54:020:54:06

So it looks fun,

0:54:060:54:07

but the point being that it can work for you

0:54:070:54:11

-if he's feeling tired.

-Yes.

0:54:110:54:13

We don't get carried away with the whole process we do.

0:54:170:54:21

We've made a building, we...we haven't, we haven't made Josh well,

0:54:210:54:26

we haven't helped Josh get better.

0:54:260:54:28

I think, mentally, it will be the biggest boost for him.

0:54:300:54:35

-It will be...

-You think, really?

0:54:350:54:37

-Oh, yes!

-That room is his little sanctuary.

0:54:370:54:40

-He feels most safe in his bedroom, doesn't he?

-He does.

0:54:400:54:43

And that will make a massive difference to him.

0:54:430:54:46

And here's...

0:54:460:54:48

MUM: Ah!

0:54:480:54:49

Ah!

0:54:490:54:52

Wow!

0:54:530:54:55

Cool!

0:54:570:54:59

-This is awesome!

-DAD LAUGHS

0:54:590:55:02

Wow!

0:55:020:55:04

LAUGHTER

0:55:040:55:06

No more girls.

0:55:080:55:11

-Yeah!

-LAUGHTER

0:55:110:55:12

ALL LAUGH

0:55:160:55:19

SHE GASPS

0:55:200:55:21

Oh!

0:55:210:55:24

-What do you think?

-I love it.

0:55:250:55:28

I like the wallpaper.

0:55:280:55:31

-Perfect wallpaper.

-Yeah!

-Just what...

0:55:310:55:34

I've got a desk.

0:55:340:55:36

-It's just pretty.

-Yes.

0:55:390:55:41

Just what you deserve, hm? SHE LAUGHS

0:55:420:55:44

You do.

0:55:440:55:47

APPLAUSE

0:55:560:55:57

Anyone that knows me knows that I'm never short of a word to say,

0:56:110:56:15

but, guys, I'm just totally and utterly speechless

0:56:150:56:19

over what you've done for us.

0:56:190:56:20

People have given up their time and, er...

0:56:200:56:24

HE LAUGHS NERVOUSLY

0:56:240:56:25

Thank you's a small word,

0:56:250:56:27

-but that's...

-Thank you so much.

0:56:270:56:30

I can't tell you what this means to me and my family. SHE SOBS

0:56:300:56:33

It means so much.

0:56:330:56:35

Thank you so much.

0:56:370:56:39

APPLAUSE

0:56:390:56:41

Oh, Gaby!

0:56:430:56:45

-Thank you. Thank you.

-Such a pleasure, sweetheart.

0:56:450:56:48

-HE LAUGHS

-Cheers.

0:56:480:56:51

Oh!

0:56:550:56:56

What's your favourite football team?

0:56:560:56:59

-Ipswich.

-Ipswich?

0:56:590:57:02

So would it be very cool if someone from Ipswich Town,

0:57:020:57:05

one of the players, had came along, as well?

0:57:050:57:07

-The goalie!

-Right, the goalkeeper!

0:57:070:57:09

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:57:090:57:10

I'd like to give you a signed pair of my match gloves.

0:57:140:57:17

They've not been worn recently, unfortunately. LAUGHTER

0:57:170:57:20

But they're signed to you, OK?

0:57:200:57:21

APPLAUSE

0:57:210:57:25

We don't think in any way that doing up a building makes someone well.

0:57:340:57:37

But if you looked to their faces at the beginning of the week,

0:57:370:57:41

and look at their faces now, you can see a huge weight has been lifted.

0:57:410:57:45

And it means they have a place where they can relax

0:57:450:57:48

and where Josh can look forward to coming home to in between

0:57:480:57:51

the really important treatment he's getting in hospital.

0:57:510:57:56

They've got home, at last, and that's a big thing.

0:57:560:57:59

Maybe you know someone who needs your help.
