We didn't get a lot of time.

0:00:020:00:04

She just told me to make sure, no matter what,

0:00:040:00:07

I do my best for the kids.

0:00:070:00:09

Hope I don't let her down, really.

0:00:090:00:11

We're here to help a family who've suffered a devastating loss...

0:00:120:00:16

They've lost Mummy and they're worrying about Daddy.

0:00:160:00:20

They've had enough worry in their little lives.

0:00:200:00:23

You'd have swapped places with her, wouldn't you?

0:00:230:00:26

'..to build a brighter future

0:00:260:00:28

'for a family who desperately need our help.'

0:00:280:00:32

The house is just crazy, we just... we just can't move.

0:00:320:00:36

It hasn't done my relationship with the kids much good, to be fair.

0:00:360:00:39

Today, Shannon had to tidy up the bedroom and did you tidy it?

0:00:390:00:43

Don't think so, no.

0:00:430:00:46

She's been naughty!

0:00:460:00:48

I'm not saying Paul's bad off in the world of love

0:00:480:00:50

because he loves his kids.

0:00:500:00:52

But material things, he's got none.

0:00:520:00:54

But it's the biggest home we've ever built,

0:00:540:00:56

and it's going to test every single one of us.

0:00:560:00:59

C'mon!

0:00:590:01:00

-It's a two-way thought process.

-You just need to...

-I can't work out

0:01:000:01:04

what's in your head.

0:01:040:01:05

LAUGHTER

0:01:050:01:06

They've had a terrible time.

0:01:060:01:07

I want this house to be absolutely spot-on.

0:01:070:01:10

We've got a lot to do and not much time to do it in.

0:01:100:01:12

-How are you getting on?

-Don't have a go at me.

0:01:120:01:14

I'm just asking how you're getting on.

0:01:140:01:16

Not very well at the moment.

0:01:160:01:18

We'll have to call it a day. We can't carry on in these conditions.

0:01:180:01:21

Guys, we'll have to pull you off over there.

0:01:210:01:24

There's me, there's the usual suspects,

0:01:240:01:26

but how many people answered our call for help?

0:01:260:01:29

This many, because this is DIY SOS: The Big Build.

0:01:290:01:32

CHEERING AND CLAPPING

0:01:320:01:37

Misterton, near Doncaster, is home to the Makings family.

0:01:460:01:50

Dad Paul, step-son PJ,

0:01:500:01:53

then there's Jake, Shannon, Katie, Sophie

0:01:530:01:57

and little Emily.

0:01:570:02:00

Paul and his wife, Roxanne, had always wanted a big family.

0:02:000:02:04

I don't know if I had a say in all of them to be fair,

0:02:040:02:07

but that's what she wanted, Roxanne.

0:02:070:02:09

Just a big family, which is why we kept having more kids.

0:02:090:02:11

HE LAUGHS

0:02:110:02:13

With six kids, Paul and Roxanne desperately needed a large house.

0:02:130:02:17

In August 2011, they inherited a small two-bedroom property.

0:02:170:02:22

It was cramped, but Paul's truck business was doing well,

0:02:220:02:25

so they could afford to turn it into their dream home.

0:02:250:02:29

We'd saved a bit of money, so basically what we did,

0:02:290:02:31

we ploughed all of the money that we had into building an extension.

0:02:310:02:36

The day-to-day organisation of six young children

0:02:360:02:39

in a tiny cramped home was tough on everyone.

0:02:390:02:42

Guys, dinner time!

0:02:420:02:44

Come on, Emily. Dinner time!

0:02:440:02:46

But it was only meant to be temporary.

0:02:460:02:48

-Daddy!

-Nobody argue.

0:02:480:02:50

We were only in here about a month

0:02:520:02:55

and then it kind of all went wrong after that.

0:02:550:02:58

During her last pregnancy, Roxanne experienced severe back pain.

0:03:000:03:04

She ignored it, but shortly after giving birth to little Emily,

0:03:040:03:08

she woke one morning and couldn't feel her legs.

0:03:080:03:11

She was rushed into hospital

0:03:110:03:13

where doctors discovered a large cancerous tumour on her spine.

0:03:130:03:18

Initially, the operation was a success,

0:03:180:03:21

but, soon after, the cancer spread.

0:03:210:03:24

Roxanne told me not to tell the kids how ill she was,

0:03:270:03:31

but they knew she wasn't very well.

0:03:310:03:33

We got back into hospital and she had another operation on her spine,

0:03:340:03:40

but she didn't recover from that.

0:03:400:03:43

The doctor, he said to me, he says, "You need to tell the kids".

0:03:500:03:54

I lined them all up and said,

0:03:580:04:00

"Sorry, guys...

0:04:000:04:02

"..but we couldn't fix mummy any more".

0:04:040:04:07

And, erm, four hours later she died.

0:04:090:04:12

Paul gave up work

0:04:170:04:19

and devoted all of his time to looking after his grieving children.

0:04:190:04:24

Basically, I just had to take a deep breath and carry on really.

0:04:240:04:28

Kids were distraught and they still are.

0:04:300:04:33

Paul is now a stay-at-home dad, doing his best to cope

0:04:360:04:39

and keep a semblance of normality.

0:04:390:04:42

KIDS CHATTER

0:04:420:04:44

The house that was once his and Roxanne's dream

0:04:440:04:48

is now dragging him down.

0:04:480:04:51

'The house is just crazy. Every space just seemed to be cramped

0:04:520:04:56

'and stuff all over, and we just... We just can't move.'

0:04:560:05:00

Just leave her!

0:05:020:05:03

'It hasn't done my relationship with the kids much good, to be fair.'

0:05:030:05:07

-He's mean.

-Oh! He's not!

0:05:070:05:11

-Daddy is.

-No, he's not!

-Sometimes.

0:05:110:05:14

That's only cos you've been naughty.

0:05:140:05:16

Just the organisation of getting six children out of the house is a

0:05:160:05:19

military operation, and that's what I feel like at times,

0:05:190:05:22

like a sergeant major.

0:05:220:05:23

Right, boys, c'mon. Bedtime.

0:05:230:05:26

BOYS: AW!

0:05:260:05:27

It's just a nightmare getting all the teeth cleaned,

0:05:270:05:31

breakfasts, getting dressed, finding clothes,

0:05:310:05:35

keep on top of me ironing.

0:05:350:05:37

Oh, God! I hate the ironing.

0:05:370:05:40

Life is just... Yeah, it's a little bit difficult at the minute.

0:05:400:05:43

With only two bedrooms, Paul has spent the last year

0:05:430:05:46

sleeping on the sofa.

0:05:460:05:48

It's not very good. The front window leaks so it's really cold,

0:05:480:05:51

can't afford to have the fire on too much cos that costs money.

0:05:510:05:54

But, at the end of the day, the kids have got beds

0:05:540:05:57

and that's what's important.

0:05:570:05:59

Night-night, Daddy.

0:05:590:06:01

The two boys are in one room and all four girls share the other,

0:06:010:06:04

making bedtimes especially difficult.

0:06:040:06:08

I stay up all night cos I can't get to sleep.

0:06:080:06:11

In the morning I'm like, "Go away, I'm trying to have a sleep".

0:06:110:06:15

He says, "If you don't wake up, you don't get any breakfast".

0:06:150:06:19

So I go...

0:06:190:06:20

And today, she didn't get any breakfast.

0:06:200:06:23

We didn't get a lot of time, you now.

0:06:230:06:25

She just told me to make sure, no matter what,

0:06:250:06:29

I'd do my best for the kids, and that's all the asked from me.

0:06:290:06:33

I hope I don't let her down, really.

0:06:340:06:36

And that's why the family need our help.

0:06:380:06:41

We need to give them the space they need to heal

0:06:410:06:45

and move on with their lives.

0:06:450:06:47

-Thanks for inviting me into your bedroom.

-Yes!

0:06:470:06:49

Which is the bed and which is the sofa?

0:06:490:06:52

That's the bed and that's the sofa.

0:06:520:06:55

-Man, that's ridiculous!

-Yeah.

-Do you ever, like, wake up and think,

0:06:550:06:58

"What the hell happened?"

0:06:580:07:00

Yeah, I worked really hard all my life

0:07:000:07:03

to get to that perfect point.

0:07:030:07:04

And we was - me, Roxanne the kids, when we moved into here...

0:07:040:07:08

That was the start of our lives.

0:07:080:07:10

The rest of our lives were going to be here.

0:07:100:07:12

I was going to carry on with the building work

0:07:120:07:14

and get everything that Roxanne wanted, that I'd promised her.

0:07:140:07:17

And then it just all seemed to go wrong.

0:07:170:07:19

If we get this place sorted out, how does life change?

0:07:190:07:22

I've been thinking a lot about it.

0:07:220:07:24

It feels like now, I've... I've...

0:07:240:07:28

I've got Roxanne to rest, and you guys have come here.

0:07:280:07:31

It feels like my life now is starting to kind of start again,

0:07:310:07:35

if you know what I mean? We can kind of take this as a stepping stone

0:07:350:07:38

to move forward with our lives.

0:07:380:07:40

Well, we'll do our best.

0:07:400:07:41

You know, we'll do the best we possibly can to get that new start

0:07:410:07:45

for you and the kids.

0:07:450:07:47

They've had such a lot to deal with

0:07:470:07:49

and rebuilding a house will not bring back what they've lost.

0:07:490:07:52

No, this is about giving Paul and the children space, organisation

0:07:520:07:56

and a chance to concentrate on their relationships whilst they heal.

0:07:560:08:01

So, how do you get seven people comfortably

0:08:010:08:05

into a two-bedroom house?

0:08:050:08:07

By making it a lot bigger, that's how.

0:08:070:08:10

But it is the middle of winter.

0:08:100:08:13

It's a massive build. Just look at the space.

0:08:130:08:15

We're basically doubling the size of the house,

0:08:150:08:18

and that's a pretty big build even by DIY SOS: The Big Build standards.

0:08:180:08:23

It's not us, it's all these boys here.

0:08:230:08:25

We called upon local trades, suppliers and the community

0:08:270:08:30

and just take a look who turned up. Amazing!

0:08:300:08:33

We've done plenty of one-storey extensions,

0:08:330:08:35

but this is a two-storey extension, making a total of 10 rooms,

0:08:350:08:40

and a huge garden out back.

0:08:400:08:42

It means we're going to need every single one-and-a-half of them.

0:08:420:08:47

-Are you all the plasterers?

-Yes! Yes!

-Any gas plumbers?

0:08:470:08:51

-Yeah?

-They can do everything, this lot!

0:08:510:08:54

It might be the mammoth of jobs, but there's a lot of love going round.

0:08:540:08:59

Although some of us are getting a bit more loving than others.

0:08:590:09:02

Look, Bill! Somebody loves you.

0:09:020:09:04

Oh, isn't that beautiful?!

0:09:040:09:06

Look at that! That's going in the back wall.

0:09:060:09:09

You'll be forever built into the building,

0:09:090:09:11

something we've tried to do on several occasions!

0:09:110:09:13

Right, let's get the tea on. Shall we get the tea on?

0:09:130:09:16

Tea, Billy? Tea?! Really, with the whole house to do?

0:09:160:09:19

Actually, he's right.

0:09:190:09:21

Speaking of which, we need a plan. Cue our design diva.

0:09:220:09:27

It's an interesting one, isn't it? What's the main problem?

0:09:270:09:30

The house is too small.

0:09:300:09:31

This family are just living on top of each other.

0:09:310:09:34

And that, I suppose, causes stress.

0:09:340:09:37

Yeah, it's been really, really stressful.

0:09:370:09:39

Paul's trying to get the kids organised and to school every day

0:09:390:09:42

and there's just no room for anything.

0:09:420:09:44

Gabrielle's design for our biggest home build yet means we are

0:09:460:09:50

going to make this house twice as big with a two-storey extension.

0:09:500:09:55

The existing ground floor will have the living space downstairs

0:09:550:09:59

knocked through, so it's open plan with new patio doors to the back.

0:09:590:10:02

We'll also add a toilet and a utility area.

0:10:040:10:08

The extension will create space for two new bedrooms.

0:10:080:10:11

One for PJ, the other for Paul,

0:10:110:10:13

who will no longer have to sleep on the family couch.

0:10:130:10:16

He also gets his own bathroom, which is very nice.

0:10:160:10:19

Upstairs, we've kept the original layout.

0:10:190:10:22

The bedrooms up here will just need a lick of paint.

0:10:220:10:24

The bathroom, once spruced up, will look fine.

0:10:240:10:27

But the extension will make the real difference,

0:10:270:10:29

giving us the floor area for two more bedrooms,

0:10:290:10:32

making six - the magic number.

0:10:320:10:33

This is gigantic, but everything has been designed

0:10:330:10:36

so that Paul can be more organised,

0:10:360:10:38

and the house allows for more, what designers call "flow".

0:10:380:10:42

When you say, "We need to sort out the flow", what does it mean?

0:10:420:10:45

You get all nostril flary! I'm not talking about people wafting around

0:10:450:10:49

in kaftans, but six children not crashing into each other

0:10:490:10:52

and this space really working for them.

0:10:520:10:54

-OK, that kind of makes sense.

-Is that

-OK? Yeah, no, no. Yeah.

0:10:540:10:57

You're quite feisty this week!

0:10:570:10:59

No, I just feel really strongly about this build.

0:10:590:11:01

Paul's been sleeping on the sofa for a year,

0:11:010:11:04

and they've had a terrible time.

0:11:040:11:05

I just want this house to be absolutely spot-on the first time,

0:11:050:11:09

We've got a lot to do and not very much time to do it in.

0:11:090:11:11

That's right, we don't get it right second time round.

0:11:110:11:14

First time round every time.

0:11:140:11:16

The 90 people have attacked the old house.

0:11:160:11:18

I tell you, this lot do not hang around.

0:11:180:11:20

If you walk through, you'll see how ridiculous it is in there.

0:11:200:11:24

Within 15 minutes, we've practically stripped the place out.

0:11:240:11:27

-Let's get this outside.

-Tea?

0:11:280:11:30

With the scale of the task, it's just as well that everyone on-site

0:11:300:11:33

is young, fit and as lean as a butcher's dog.

0:11:330:11:38

What were you like?

0:11:390:11:40

Well, I was like a greyhound.

0:11:400:11:42

I was like a whippet when I was that age.

0:11:420:11:44

When I was 18, I found a pub and I've been obese ever since.

0:11:440:11:48

-Not obese.

-I am, I'm technically morbidly obese.

-No, you're not!

0:11:480:11:52

Judging by the Wii Fit, I'm morbidly obese. I'm about to die.

0:11:520:11:56

You know that, right, I haven't been on it for 1,136 days apparently,

0:11:560:12:02

-and it tells you your comparison to age?

-Yes.

0:12:020:12:05

My comparison age, 63.

0:12:050:12:09

I tell you, I can get this at home.

0:12:120:12:14

I don't need it from you two!

0:12:140:12:16

Bless! He doesn't look a day over 60, does he?

0:12:160:12:19

What's important here is brawn not beauty.

0:12:190:12:21

Unless you're a designer, like ours, of course, who's beautiful,

0:12:210:12:24

you know... I'm digging a hole!

0:12:240:12:26

Erm... In fact, that's what's going on outside - digging foundations.

0:12:260:12:30

They're using a super-fast system and it needs to be because

0:12:300:12:33

by the end of the day we need to have built a two-storey extension.

0:12:330:12:37

We came in yesterday and we put a few piles down

0:12:370:12:40

and sort of just made sure we had a head-start.

0:12:400:12:43

We've seen Harvey before, but unfortunately his creative

0:12:430:12:46

explanation of how it all works has gained him a reputation.

0:12:460:12:50

The difference between a conventional foundation,

0:12:510:12:54

which is sort of a spread load, which was sort of like a Dutch clog,

0:12:540:12:58

and our piles, which are sort of more of a point load, more of a stiletto.

0:12:580:13:02

Now, where that analogy came from...?

0:13:020:13:04

-I don't know, but it was about 2½ years ago?

-A while ago, yeah.

0:13:040:13:08

-How much stick have you had for that since?

-2½ years' worth.

0:13:080:13:11

And ongoing on a daily basis.

0:13:110:13:13

So, I don't put piles in any more.

0:13:130:13:15

-We put stilettos in on a regular basis.

-Nice!

0:13:150:13:19

# Hello, hello...#

0:13:190:13:21

It's not fair to give him jip, Stiletto boy!

0:13:210:13:23

You don't have to call him that!

0:13:230:13:25

Around the back is a 32m garden we're working on,

0:13:250:13:28

but you can't cut corners here and stilettos just aren't practical.

0:13:280:13:32

Well, you'd sink into the mud, wouldn't you?

0:13:320:13:34

The weather is on our side.

0:13:340:13:36

It's a beautiful day for pushing the guys to the edge.

0:13:360:13:38

Have you noticed the music?

0:13:380:13:40

Because, this bloke...there's something familiar about him.

0:13:400:13:43

-Justin, how are you doing?

-How are you?

0:13:430:13:45

There's a hint, with those glasses on, of the Bono about you.

0:13:450:13:49

-Can't sing, though!

-Can you not, nothing at all?

0:13:490:13:52

No, no. No, not a word.

0:13:520:13:54

The plan for this colossal garden from Bono and his mates

0:13:540:13:57

is pretty ambitious.

0:13:570:13:58

We'll split it into three separate parts -

0:13:580:14:01

decking, a play area and, to top it off,

0:14:010:14:04

a football pitch at the back. Ha-ha!

0:14:040:14:06

Heading up the team is the unfathomably optimistic Karl.

0:14:060:14:09

-Nice to meet you, Karl.

-And you.

-Big old garden!

0:14:110:14:14

-Very big, isn't it? Lots of work to do.

-And it will snow tomorrow.

0:14:140:14:17

-We don't mind snow, it's rain we don't want.

-Is that right, really?

0:14:170:14:21

Yes, we can move snow, we can't move rain.

0:14:210:14:23

-Man, how many people have you got on this job?

-We've got 10.

0:14:230:14:26

Of course, you could be somewhere else earning a living.

0:14:260:14:29

We could, but...good cause.

0:14:290:14:31

The story you told this morning about the guy,

0:14:310:14:34

if he can sit there and relax and know where his kids are,

0:14:340:14:37

and watch them having a bit of fun growing up, that's fine.

0:14:370:14:40

I'm happy with that.

0:14:400:14:41

Don't we get the most fabulous people on these jobs?

0:14:410:14:44

To give us a chance of keeping the schedule,

0:14:440:14:46

the two-storey extension is going to have to arrive as whole panels.

0:14:460:14:50

We need to get the assembled panels in by the end of the day,

0:14:500:14:53

so we're calling in the big boys.

0:14:530:14:55

And when I say big, I'm talking international rescue,

0:14:550:14:58

I'm talking Thunderbirds.

0:14:580:15:00

MUSIC: "Beautiful Day" by U2

0:15:000:15:03

Cuckoo!

0:15:030:15:04

It doesn't matter how old you get,

0:15:070:15:09

you see a crane and a piece of kit like this,

0:15:090:15:12

it's just the most wonderful thing.

0:15:120:15:14

Look at the size of it. Look!

0:15:140:15:15

For context, look at it.

0:15:150:15:17

Look at this giant thing happening behind me. Isn't that wonderful?

0:15:170:15:21

Get over it, it's a crane! I don't know why they get so excited.

0:15:250:15:28

-It's beautiful, isn't it?

-It's all right.

0:15:280:15:30

-It's better than a tractor.

-How can that be better than a tractor?

0:15:300:15:34

Look at it! It's a vast, massive, erect thing.

0:15:340:15:38

It's a man thing, isn't it?

0:15:380:15:40

-You wouldn't go inside, would you?

-No.

0:15:400:15:42

You'd need to find things to lift up all day.

0:15:420:15:44

What did you say earlier? I'll get myself one of them,

0:15:440:15:47

-get rid of the Mrs, it's probably cheaper.

-I didn't say that, no!

0:15:470:15:51

That's a man reversing at high speed if ever I've seen one.

0:15:530:15:56

No! Get off! No really, get off!

0:15:560:16:00

NICK LAUGHS

0:16:000:16:02

She's feisty! I just wanted to give her a better view

0:16:020:16:05

of the lovely foundations put up by John.

0:16:050:16:07

-That's us done.

-You done?

-Yes, all done.

0:16:070:16:09

Thank you, John, ready for the walls.

0:16:090:16:11

We need the extension up tonight

0:16:110:16:13

so it's ready to take the roof tomorrow.

0:16:130:16:15

Normally they'd spend a couple of days on this. They have to push on.

0:16:150:16:18

He is repeating himself! But then we are impressed with what's going on.

0:16:180:16:22

Explain how this works. I see plug sockets but no cabling.

0:16:220:16:25

-So what's the deal?

-We put a floor cassette on top.

0:16:250:16:28

It allows you to pop wires down through, conduits in,

0:16:280:16:30

saves on time and effort, it's all pre-insulated in the factory.

0:16:300:16:34

All he's got to do is pop his cables down through.

0:16:340:16:36

-Once that's done, we can plaster it up and job's done.

-Clever, innit?

0:16:360:16:40

With all this heavy lifting going on, we're often asked

0:16:420:16:45

if television has made us soft.

0:16:450:16:47

Well, no. But to prove it, well, here's an easy way to show.

0:16:470:16:51

One, two, three,

0:16:510:16:54

four, five,

0:16:540:16:58

six, seven!

0:16:580:17:00

They're going!

0:17:040:17:06

Seven, eight.

0:17:060:17:07

ALL: Nine, ten!

0:17:070:17:09

One, two...

0:17:100:17:12

LAUGHTER

0:17:120:17:15

22, 23...

0:17:150:17:17

Hang in there!

0:17:170:17:19

Dig in! Go on!

0:17:190:17:21

24!

0:17:230:17:25

That's very impressive!

0:17:250:17:26

He's a man mountain, isn't he? A man mountain.

0:17:260:17:28

Look at the view from up there.

0:17:280:17:30

This crane is wonderful and they're swinging panels in faster than...

0:17:300:17:34

a crane swinging panels in, really!

0:17:340:17:37

The speed of the build is phenomenal.

0:17:370:17:39

A few hours in but, thanks to fine weather and hard work,

0:17:390:17:42

the extension is already halfway up.

0:17:420:17:44

Inside the existing house,

0:17:450:17:47

the steel supports for the open plan kitchen are going in.

0:17:470:17:51

But it's not just the trades who have turned up to give us a hand,

0:17:510:17:54

friends are also keen to get involved,

0:17:540:17:56

including Paul's best friend, Joel, whose family wrote in on his behalf.

0:17:560:18:02

He's always put the kids first.

0:18:020:18:04

I know I couldn't be able to deal with the stuff he's gone through.

0:18:040:18:08

It's a... Yeah, it's surprising how well he's done.

0:18:080:18:11

He's dealt with it all.

0:18:110:18:13

Do you think this might give him a new start?

0:18:130:18:15

-Oh, definitely.

-What do you make of it all?

-Oh, fantastic.

0:18:150:18:18

It'll be brilliant!

0:18:180:18:20

Can't wait to see his face.

0:18:200:18:22

It's been tough for the whole family, dealing with their grief.

0:18:240:18:27

They need the time and space to remember Roxanne,

0:18:270:18:30

but at the same time move on with life.

0:18:300:18:33

Music is part of that process, something the family love

0:18:340:18:38

and that Paul is keen to encourage.

0:18:380:18:40

HE PLAYS DIY SOS THEME TUNE

0:18:430:18:47

-Where did you learn that?

-YouTube.

-And, learnt it yourself?

-Yeah.

0:18:470:18:50

That's very good! How long have you been playing?

0:18:500:18:53

-Er, how long have I been playing?

-I'd say about a year in total.

0:18:530:18:56

It's been on and off. It's started again recent.

0:18:560:18:59

He'd have a little bit of a go and then...

0:18:590:19:01

A little bit of a go and then stuff happened.

0:19:010:19:03

-So you just started up with it again?

-Yeah.

0:19:030:19:06

If you can learn something from YouTube like that,

0:19:060:19:09

you're pretty good.

0:19:090:19:10

They're all very talented.

0:19:110:19:13

They've all got their own talents.

0:19:130:19:15

That's the trick, finding what they want to do,

0:19:150:19:17

-and encouraging them in those areas as well.

-Yeah.

0:19:170:19:20

It will be nice to have them all back in one place with some space.

0:19:200:19:24

-Yeah, yeah.

-And for you to get off the sofa would be nice?

0:19:240:19:27

Oh, yeah. Yeah. I've been dying to get off there for a while, so...

0:19:270:19:31

Sometimes I sleep on the floor just to mix it up,

0:19:310:19:34

just to live life on the edge!

0:19:340:19:36

-Who does all the cooking? Do you do the cooking?

-Oh, yeah.

0:19:360:19:39

What's Dad's cooking like? Is it any good?

0:19:390:19:42

-It's OK.

-What's his best dish?

0:19:420:19:45

-Probably the macaroni cheese.

-What about sausage surprise?

0:19:450:19:48

-What's the surprise?

-There's sausages in it!

0:19:480:19:51

-What's your favourite meal then?

-Sunday dinner.

0:19:520:19:55

Do you do a roast, do you?

0:19:550:19:56

Oh, yeah. I've learnt, but, yeah, Sunday dinner is my special thing.

0:19:560:19:59

Christmas dinner, I like cooking that.

0:19:590:20:02

There's that thing about getting everybody around the table,

0:20:020:20:05

having Sunday lunch and things.

0:20:050:20:07

So, to give them the home that Roxanne wanted is just fantastic.

0:20:070:20:12

-What are you looking forward to most, PJ?

-Bedroom.

0:20:120:20:15

-Really?

-Yeah.

0:20:150:20:16

-What are you hoping for when you come back?

-Drums.

0:20:160:20:20

But, about the house, what do you want most in the house?

0:20:200:20:24

Drums.

0:20:240:20:26

LAUGHTER

0:20:260:20:27

Right. We'll start looking in the local press for a second-hand set!

0:20:270:20:31

MUSIC

0:20:320:20:35

Back on the build, it's like working in a close-knit pack,

0:20:350:20:38

so if one of the pride go down,

0:20:380:20:40

it's important we're on hand to support him.

0:20:400:20:43

What's happened?

0:20:450:20:46

I'm a bit embarrassed really. I've just popped down to the lavatory,

0:20:460:20:50

-and I went to get up and I couldn't.

-Your back's gone?

-My back is gone.

0:20:500:20:54

So, it's just taken me 20 minutes to walk, what, 500 yards.

0:20:540:20:58

-His back's gone.

-You're not looking too good, mate!

0:20:580:21:00

I'm not feeling too clever, mate.

0:21:000:21:02

No? Did you have a number one or a number two?

0:21:020:21:05

Look, what he did in the toilet has got no relevance all right.

0:21:050:21:09

Don't make me laugh!

0:21:090:21:10

You see, you can do yourself some damage if you strain too hard.

0:21:110:21:15

Anyway, the extension has started to take on a magnificent shape.

0:21:150:21:18

Even Gabby is suitably impressed.

0:21:180:21:20

So this is Paul's bedroom.

0:21:220:21:23

It's going to be the head of his bed here, lovely window,

0:21:230:21:26

walk-in wardrobe here, having had no-where to keep his clothes at all.

0:21:260:21:31

Very exciting. Here is going to be en suite shower room.

0:21:310:21:34

-Have you got the tiles for the bathroom?

-No.

0:21:340:21:37

They're ready to tile the bathroom.

0:21:370:21:39

I don't have any bath, I don't have any appliances, tiles or bathroom.

0:21:390:21:42

-Is this being wallpapered?

-No, just paint.

-Paint, what colour?

0:21:420:21:46

It might be very dark grey.

0:21:460:21:48

Oh!

0:21:480:21:49

How do you plead?

0:21:510:21:52

Not guilty, your honour.

0:21:520:21:54

One thing we're certainly not guilty of is standing around.

0:21:560:21:59

We're leaning on the edge.

0:21:590:22:01

We've had big builds before, but the scale here means

0:22:010:22:03

we need everything working in our favour.

0:22:030:22:06

So, whilst the weather is good, cold but good, the best thing to do

0:22:060:22:09

is chuck as many man hours in as we can possibly muster.

0:22:090:22:13

We've concentrated on this extension today because it's really

0:22:130:22:17

important to get it done.

0:22:170:22:18

Obviously we lose the crane so we need to get on with it.

0:22:180:22:21

But there's only 25 people working on this.

0:22:210:22:23

65 people have been making a huge difference to the inside

0:22:230:22:26

of the old house.

0:22:260:22:27

We can't ask any more of people, except we'll have to.

0:22:270:22:30

We'll have to ask them to stay on and keep working here

0:22:300:22:33

because we've got to get this finished.

0:22:330:22:35

Trust me, tomorrow we'll have a two-storey building here.

0:22:350:22:38

Morning, world! Last night I told you that we'd have a two-storey

0:22:490:22:52

extension by the end of the day, and lo and behold, there it is!

0:22:520:22:56

It took us until 10.15 last night,

0:22:560:22:58

but we got it done and look at this!

0:22:580:23:00

Fencing down the garden, fence posts in the bottom gone, the shed's gone.

0:23:000:23:04

They've been working like lunatics yesterday and this morning.

0:23:040:23:07

The inside's going mad. it's going to be another busy day.

0:23:070:23:10

But they forecast snow, which is not so good.

0:23:100:23:13

Day two is all about the roof.

0:23:140:23:16

If the forecast IS right and the weather turns bad,

0:23:160:23:19

we're going to need one up as soon as possible.

0:23:190:23:21

Will it go through the gate?

0:23:230:23:24

'But it's not an easy or quick job,

0:23:240:23:26

'and the temperature is making it worse.'

0:23:260:23:29

This is the weather for roofing, innit?

0:23:310:23:33

Lovely, isn't it?!

0:23:330:23:34

Middle of winter, bit of a gale blowing, snow in the air.

0:23:340:23:38

That's why it's important to get this covered today, if we can.

0:23:380:23:41

It's not a straightforward roof.

0:23:410:23:43

We've got two teams of chippies on it. Just got to get it in today.

0:23:430:23:47

The pressure is on.

0:23:490:23:50

A roof like this would usually take more than a day to construct,

0:23:500:23:54

but that's all we've got time for.

0:23:540:23:56

These boys are all poised. You just need a roof to put it on.

0:23:560:23:59

Like coiled springs.

0:23:590:24:00

You look like athletes. You can see, can't you?

0:24:000:24:03

We've given a lot of love and attention to the outside,

0:24:030:24:05

the roof especially,

0:24:050:24:07

but inside we've got teams working their fingers to the bone.

0:24:070:24:11

It's come on quite a bit inside - ceiling going in.

0:24:110:24:14

I tell you, the big interesting change is if you follow me,

0:24:140:24:17

we can now walk through into the extension.

0:24:170:24:19

They've knocked a hole through and this is a bedroom,

0:24:190:24:22

with a big window looking out onto the back garden.

0:24:220:24:25

It's all bundling along, isn't it?

0:24:250:24:27

And, of course, this is no happy accident. There's a plan,

0:24:280:24:32

and that's down to Gabby, who does a cracking job...most of the time.

0:24:320:24:36

But every now and again we have to have a little word.

0:24:360:24:38

Gabbers is having a look at the kitchen and she wanted to lose

0:24:380:24:42

that space in there.

0:24:420:24:43

I know exactly what you're going to say - that is a waste of space.

0:24:430:24:46

We spend the whole time talking about how space is important

0:24:460:24:49

and storage.

0:24:490:24:50

He's got six kids to look after, and then we block off an area

0:24:500:24:54

and lose a flipping great hole in the house.

0:24:540:24:56

-Gabrielle!

-Run, Gabbers. Run!

0:24:560:24:58

BOTH: Run!

0:24:580:25:00

What's the matter?

0:25:000:25:01

Right, can I just ask a question?

0:25:010:25:03

What do we think about losing this much space in a building this size?

0:25:030:25:07

Redonkilous!

0:25:070:25:09

You see there are... There must be, I would think,

0:25:090:25:12

getting on for about 150 years of building experience

0:25:120:25:15

stood there, saying it's ridiculous and that's just him!

0:25:150:25:18

LAUGHTER

0:25:180:25:20

No, Nick, we've got a huge lovely opening here.

0:25:200:25:23

The line of the kitchen unit will flow right the way down

0:25:230:25:26

-so it's a fantastic opening.

-Like a corridor!

0:25:260:25:29

It's supposed to look like a lovely big open space.

0:25:290:25:31

I want it to look like there's nothing in the way.

0:25:310:25:34

The kids can just run round...

0:25:340:25:36

The only thing that will get in the way is a lovely big table.

0:25:360:25:39

I know where you're coming from, and I know what Gabby's trying to say

0:25:390:25:43

about line and flow.

0:25:430:25:44

Never mind that! Who's right?

0:25:440:25:47

Well, you're both right.

0:25:470:25:48

Guys, this is how it'll be, the kitchen is ordered,

0:25:480:25:51

it's going to look great. That's it.

0:25:510:25:53

Democracy's dead!

0:25:530:25:54

Just to demonstrate my point slightly more graphically,

0:25:550:25:58

this is how much space we're actually losing.

0:25:580:26:00

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight...

0:26:000:26:03

Nine!

0:26:070:26:08

Nine builders' worth.

0:26:080:26:09

Oh, stop!

0:26:090:26:11

LAUGHTER

0:26:110:26:13

There's always one, isn't there? And, here there were nine.

0:26:150:26:18

Outside, the boys have their work cut out for them because the trusses

0:26:180:26:22

are only partially constructed and the snow is now here in full force.

0:26:220:26:25

-How are we doing?

-Pardon?

-How are we doing?

0:26:270:26:29

-Oh, just lovely.

-Well, the weather has got even worse.

0:26:290:26:32

It's getting ridiculous and blizzard-like.

0:26:320:26:34

-Look at this guy. Are you enjoying yourself?

-I'm being a snowman.

0:26:340:26:39

The trouble is, if we don't do this, we'll end up with

0:26:390:26:41

more and more snow inside the building.

0:26:410:26:43

Two snowmen standing in a field,

0:26:450:26:47

one snowman said to the other snowman, "Can you smell carrots?"

0:26:470:26:51

-Is that as good as it gets?

-Can you smell carrots?!

0:26:510:26:54

Yeah, we got it, Bill!

0:26:540:26:55

Just a bit of a tumbleweed moment really, wasn't it?

0:26:550:27:00

It's amazing that even though these guys are freezing cold

0:27:000:27:03

they're still determined to work.

0:27:030:27:06

And it's for this reason we called in Nigel, our safety advisor,

0:27:060:27:09

because this lot... Well, they'd just carry on and we can't let them.

0:27:090:27:14

Just for people to understand, how bad are the working conditions?

0:27:140:27:18

It is, it's ever so cold, the wind is roaring in across the flats,

0:27:180:27:23

it's very slippery underfoot now.

0:27:230:27:26

The guys are using boards, and we've got air bags down underneath.

0:27:260:27:30

Although we've got bags, they're a last resort.

0:27:300:27:32

We don't want people falling down at all. To be honest, it's getting...

0:27:320:27:36

-It's close to calling it a day?

-..to the edge, yeah.

0:27:360:27:39

There's a reason the guys are busting a gut to work

0:27:400:27:43

in freezing conditions, and that's Paul and his young family.

0:27:430:27:46

The house might be in pieces right now, but Gabby is keen

0:27:500:27:53

that the kids have an input with the decor in their rooms.

0:27:530:27:57

She needn't have worried. They had it all planned out already.

0:27:570:28:01

I'm having a bunk bed in my bedroom.

0:28:010:28:03

A bunk bed! That would be amazing, wouldn't it?

0:28:030:28:06

-And who's that a picture of, Jake?

-Mummy.

0:28:060:28:09

That's lovely. And what's that there?

0:28:090:28:12

-Guitar.

-Oh, that's really, really lovely.

0:28:120:28:15

I'd really like to put that on the wall. Would you like that?

0:28:150:28:19

And what's yours a picture of, my darling?

0:28:190:28:21

Erm, the house.

0:28:210:28:23

You know, that is pretty much what the house looks like now.

0:28:230:28:26

How did you know that that's what the house looks like at the moment?

0:28:260:28:30

Before it was a building site, did you like the house then?

0:28:300:28:34

-No.

-Why not?

0:28:340:28:36

Cos I didn't get to play anywhere.

0:28:360:28:39

Is there anything else that you think

0:28:390:28:41

would be really nice for the other people in the house?

0:28:410:28:46

-Well, PJ to have a pink bedroom.

-No thanks!

0:28:460:28:49

-That's done. Is that OK, PJ?

-No.

0:28:490:28:52

MORE GIGGLING

0:28:520:28:54

I get the feeling the girls are ganging up on the boys a bit here!

0:28:540:28:58

Whilst work goes on at the house, Paul and the kids

0:28:580:29:00

are staying with his mum, Maggie.

0:29:000:29:02

Since Roxanne died,

0:29:020:29:04

she's seen first-hand the impact it's had on the family.

0:29:040:29:07

I don't know how he does it. I don't know how he's coped.

0:29:070:29:11

to try and grieve as well as look after them,

0:29:110:29:14

it's been very hard for him.

0:29:140:29:16

I think he's done marvellous and everybody says

0:29:160:29:19

he's done a marvellous job.

0:29:190:29:20

So proud of them, I tell you.

0:29:200:29:22

And, of course, our Paul at the beginning, after Roxanne, he went..

0:29:220:29:26

I couldn't get him to talk, he went within himself

0:29:260:29:29

and they were worried about Daddy, you know what I mean?

0:29:290:29:32

You know, they lost Mummy and they're worrying about Daddy.

0:29:330:29:37

They shouldn't be worrying about Daddy, should they,

0:29:370:29:40

because of what they've been through?

0:29:400:29:42

So they've had enough worry in their little lives without having any more.

0:29:420:29:46

If you could wish one thing for the kids, what would it be?

0:29:460:29:50

Space and separate rooms, just so where they can go away

0:29:510:29:55

and think and have quiet moments to themselves, which they do need.

0:29:550:30:00

That would be lovely, yeah.

0:30:000:30:02

-That sounds like a good idea.

-Yeah, yeah.

0:30:020:30:05

Sounds like a great idea to me.

0:30:050:30:08

Back at the coalface, the lads are fighting the weather and the light,

0:30:080:30:12

trying to make some headway with the 32m garden.

0:30:120:30:15

Just coming to check, are you suffering frostbite yet?

0:30:150:30:18

Yeah, we lost the feeling in our hands a while ago.

0:30:180:30:21

Have you? You're permanently cheerful, you lot.

0:30:210:30:23

-It's unbelievable.

-Yeah, we're from Worksop. We're mad.

0:30:230:30:26

NICK LAUGHS

0:30:260:30:29

There must be something in the water around there and here

0:30:290:30:31

because the roof team is still hard at it.

0:30:310:30:34

But enough is enough. It's freezing and the snow has forced our hand.

0:30:340:30:39

That's it. We're going to have to call it a day. We can't carry on

0:30:390:30:41

in these conditions. Guys, we'll have to pull you off over there.

0:30:410:30:45

It's gutting and it's going to put us back at least half a day

0:30:450:30:48

on an already-packed schedule.

0:30:480:30:50

No-one wants to fall behind, but we have no choice.

0:30:500:30:53

Watch your footing. It's really slippery on the way out, yeah?

0:30:540:30:57

All we can do is hope that the gods smile on us tomorrow,

0:30:570:31:01

we get better weather and we can make up for lost time.

0:31:010:31:04

I told you the sun would shine

0:31:090:31:11

and there it is, that big, orangey globe-y thing,

0:31:110:31:13

which means that the white, horrible, fluffy, cold stuff

0:31:130:31:17

has gone off the top of the roof which is nice and means we can get back on.

0:31:170:31:20

Let's see if we can get there today.

0:31:200:31:22

-How are we doing, gentlemen? How are we doing today?

-All right.

0:31:240:31:27

-It's a lot better.

-It's not too bad. I'm glad the weather's died down.

0:31:270:31:30

-It was ridiculous yesterday, wasn't it?

-I'm proud of you, getting up there. Me and you,

0:31:300:31:34

-we were up here like a pair of wet dogs.

-Yeah.

0:31:340:31:36

I think you're doing really well to keep it going the way you are.

0:31:360:31:39

Well, it's... You know, you get 90 people a day turn up and help out,

0:31:390:31:43

-stuff happens, doesn't it?

-I meant with age.

-Oh, me?

0:31:430:31:47

That's nice, isn't it?

0:31:500:31:51

I know we need the young guns on this job, but we're every bit

0:31:510:31:54

as pumped up and primed as the next young fellow, you know?

0:31:540:31:58

Yeah. Maybe not.

0:31:580:32:01

Morning.

0:32:010:32:02

Yes, feeling slightly delicate this morning. But I think it will be

0:32:020:32:06

light duties only for me and we've got a whole house to do.

0:32:060:32:09

That's a TENS machine on his back, used for pregnancy and pain.

0:32:090:32:13

It's absolute bedlam here this morning.

0:32:130:32:15

We've got about 20 plasterers turn up to start plastering,

0:32:150:32:19

but there's no boarding done yet.

0:32:190:32:21

25 years plastering and that's where you end up.

0:32:240:32:27

But, Chris, size isn't everything. Well, no, I'll leave it.

0:32:270:32:30

This build was already ambitious, but it's now behind schedule

0:32:320:32:36

and the pressure's mounting.

0:32:360:32:37

-How are you getting on today?

-Well, I just believe everyone's

0:32:390:32:42

plastering a day too early for us sparks.

0:32:420:32:44

We have to pull the plasterers in now cos that's...

0:32:440:32:47

Well, then don't have a go at me...

0:32:470:32:48

I'm not having a go at you, I'm just asking you how you're getting on.

0:32:480:32:51

-Not very well at the moment.

-That's all right then.

0:32:510:32:54

If you boys had come in and worked your butts off,

0:32:540:32:57

do you think you should have come in a day later or half a day later?

0:32:570:33:00

If you'd have worked faster, we'd have been all right.

0:33:000:33:05

-I blame that guy. It's all his fault.

-It's all my fault.

0:33:050:33:07

-It's his fault!

-Leave it there. It's all right.

0:33:070:33:10

-Look, it's going well, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:33:100:33:13

In such a tight space, it's easy for us all to get on top of one another,

0:33:130:33:18

something the family know only too well.

0:33:180:33:21

Losing Mum has been and is terribly traumatic for the children.

0:33:210:33:25

Paul has to help them with that,

0:33:250:33:28

while still grieving for the love of his life.

0:33:280:33:30

How do you feel about talking about Roxanne? Is it still too raw for you talk about?

0:33:300:33:34

It's not too raw. I can talk about Roxanne and all the good times

0:33:340:33:37

that we had, not a problem. I talk to anybody about them.

0:33:370:33:40

The difficult part, for me, to talk about is

0:33:400:33:45

when she got ill and how much...

0:33:450:33:48

how brave she was and the pain she was in.

0:33:480:33:53

It's not that I get upset for myself, I get upset for her and the kids.

0:33:530:33:57

-How long was she ill?

-Just eight months.

0:33:570:34:00

-It's not a lot of time to get your head around something, is it?

-No.

0:34:000:34:04

So, you haven't had any time to grieve?

0:34:040:34:07

I promised Roxanne that when she went that I would...

0:34:070:34:12

I would carry on,

0:34:120:34:14

that I would try and not let it affect me too much,

0:34:140:34:17

-that's what she wanted me to do so...

-You had this conversation before she died?

0:34:170:34:20

We had quite a few very hard conversations before she died.

0:34:200:34:24

-About the children?

-About the children, about me, about life.

0:34:240:34:30

What did she make you promise?

0:34:300:34:32

She made me...made me promise that I'd look after her children,

0:34:320:34:37

I'd do the very best that I could by them.

0:34:370:34:39

It was one of the things that she wanted, a big house for the kids,

0:34:390:34:43

but what they lost is just irreplaceable.

0:34:430:34:46

Can I ask you something? Somebody said something to me

0:34:490:34:52

that you wished it had been the other way around.

0:34:520:34:54

I wished she was here looking after the kids.

0:34:540:34:58

You'd have swapped places with her, wouldn't you?

0:34:580:35:02

-Yeah.

-You're doing a great job.

0:35:050:35:08

I think you're a fantastic father.

0:35:080:35:10

I think Roxanne knew that when she chose you.

0:35:100:35:13

Your mate Joel was saying he couldn't do it,

0:35:130:35:16

he couldn't have done it the way you've done it.

0:35:160:35:18

-Everyone thinks you're doing a great job.

-Yeah.

0:35:180:35:21

What he needs is a house that helps, not hinders,

0:35:230:35:27

in the job he's trying to carry on.

0:35:270:35:30

Hopefully all the work,

0:35:300:35:31

all the hours we're putting in on site will make that difference.

0:35:310:35:36

You've got to say though, really,

0:35:360:35:39

when you watch building shows, like big design building shows,

0:35:390:35:43

where they say, "After eight months, the building still isn't watertight," look at that.

0:35:430:35:46

Roofing on, watertight up the top now, windows going in.

0:35:460:35:49

Don't mess about here, you know.

0:35:490:35:52

And another pair that don't mess about are Gabby and Mark.

0:35:520:35:55

I've had the units made off-site to fit in there

0:35:550:35:58

and now there's a great big box in, so they now won't fit.

0:35:580:36:01

It's a power struggle, you see, with design versus build

0:36:010:36:04

and often they don't see eye to eye,

0:36:040:36:06

although that could be about Mark's height.

0:36:060:36:08

-It's a two-way thought process.

-You just need...

-I can't work out what's inside your head.

0:36:080:36:12

-You can't work out what's inside my head.

-Darling, everything's on the drawings, so you can just...

0:36:120:36:16

Oh, what, the drawings that you told me to just ignore?

0:36:160:36:20

You can't have it all your way, you know?

0:36:210:36:23

There's a lot of work goes in behind the scenes

0:36:230:36:25

and you just don't care about it.

0:36:250:36:27

Watch you don't trip or fall or hurt yourself.

0:36:270:36:31

Think I've upset her.

0:36:310:36:32

So, let me tell you how to handle Gabrielle.

0:36:340:36:36

She's very airy fairy, she floats around, makes up drawings and then tells you to ignore them.

0:36:360:36:40

If you left it to her devices, she'd have the whole place

0:36:400:36:43

covered in cushions and wallpaper.

0:36:430:36:44

She doesn't understand that a house has veins

0:36:440:36:47

and it's got electric cables

0:36:470:36:48

and pipes, it's got sewerage,

0:36:480:36:50

it's got all those practical things and...

0:36:500:36:53

LAUGHTER

0:36:530:36:56

Can I draw on her face?

0:37:010:37:03

Get off!

0:37:030:37:05

-SHE YELPS

-No! He really is!

0:37:050:37:07

Now, that's the way to sort out a difference on site.

0:37:100:37:12

Well, it's always worked for me and Jules.

0:37:120:37:14

It's another glorious morning in South Yorkshire.

0:37:200:37:23

Less glorious is the schedule. We're not where we should be

0:37:230:37:27

and it's making the team slightly nervy.

0:37:270:37:30

This morning we've loads of people here

0:37:300:37:32

and there's lots got to be done, like roofers want to finish today,

0:37:320:37:35

the landscapers want to get all the turf down today,

0:37:350:37:38

there's loads of decorators in there.

0:37:380:37:40

It's going to be a busy one. Bit scary, really.

0:37:400:37:42

Jules might be bricking it, but the guys on the roof are just happy

0:37:430:37:47

to work away until the job is finished.

0:37:470:37:50

-Got to be done tomorrow, haven't we?

-Yeah, I know.

0:37:500:37:52

-Well, I say happy...

-Victor Meldrew.

0:37:520:37:55

Harold Steptoe.

0:37:550:37:57

Speaking of which...

0:37:590:38:01

I was 29 when we started this. We were young, we were fit.

0:38:040:38:09

Now, he's wrecked, I'm wrecked.

0:38:090:38:12

You look about 70 today.

0:38:120:38:15

That's all right. We're not complaining.

0:38:150:38:18

Not much!

0:38:180:38:19

But there is one thing that is bound to put a smile

0:38:190:38:22

on even the grumpiest of faces.

0:38:220:38:23

Look. Hot sausage rolls and hot pork pies.

0:38:230:38:27

-I'll take them off you, my friend.

-There you go.

0:38:270:38:29

-Well done for all your hard work.

-Thank you very much.

0:38:290:38:32

It's nice to show a bit of love here and there, isn't it?

0:38:330:38:37

And these lads probably need it, the rate they've been working.

0:38:370:38:41

Gentlemen.

0:38:410:38:43

We've broken the back of the big construction jobs.

0:38:430:38:45

Sorry about the back reference, Chris.

0:38:450:38:47

But there's still a hell of a lot of work to do.

0:38:470:38:51

Luckily, Gabby hasn't overlooked any details.

0:38:510:38:54

She wants the home to have a heart. Little Katy loves elephants

0:38:540:38:57

because her mum used to buy them for her.

0:38:570:39:00

Hopefully, this will make one little girl very happy.

0:39:000:39:04

-We've had the wallpaper made especially for her.

-You've had it made for her?!

0:39:040:39:07

Yeah, a lovely lady designed it especially.

0:39:070:39:10

You must be pleased with the whole building though

0:39:100:39:12

cos it has doubled the size of the space for the family.

0:39:120:39:14

-It's incredible.

-Yeah, it looks fab. When I stop freaking out, I'll be pleased.

0:39:140:39:19

Freaking out? I don't think freaking out is fair.

0:39:190:39:22

Mind you, Gabby is a hard taskmaster.

0:39:220:39:24

Didn't we discuss this, guys?

0:39:240:39:26

We tried to talk her out of it, but she wasn't having any of it.

0:39:260:39:29

Whether it's bespoke wallpaper or crazy tiling,

0:39:290:39:32

they just keep delivering.

0:39:320:39:34

What I love so much about these projects is

0:39:340:39:37

I ask lovely Steve here to just put a couple of hanging rails up

0:39:370:39:40

and maybe some shelves for Paul's shoes,

0:39:400:39:43

look what he's done.

0:39:430:39:45

Cupboards are the source of all happiness.

0:39:450:39:47

He's looking really bashful now and trying to run away.

0:39:470:39:51

All right, my darlings. Favourite tilers in the world.

0:39:510:39:55

-How's it going?

-Nearly there and it looks awesome.

0:39:550:39:58

It does look really good, doesn't it?

0:39:580:40:00

These guys just don't know the meaning of nine-to-five,

0:40:010:40:04

which is just as well as there's only one more day to go.

0:40:040:40:08

And the garden boys, well, they're certainly not work-shy.

0:40:080:40:12

They deserve medals, all of them. They've just been unstoppable

0:40:130:40:17

out the back. Now they're being unstoppable out the front.

0:40:170:40:20

-You've got a bit of a frenzy on at the moment.

-Yeah, really wet. Sweating.

0:40:200:40:24

Just got to keep going till it's done. We'll probably be here

0:40:240:40:27

till eight tonight and the same again tomorrow, but we'll have it done.

0:40:270:40:31

It's the final day on the build.

0:40:340:40:36

We always knew this job would push us, push us to the limit,

0:40:360:40:39

we knew it was big and that we needed every bit of help that came our way.

0:40:390:40:43

But we're still behind.

0:40:430:40:46

It's flipping chaos. We haven't quite got the garden finished.

0:40:460:40:50

I feel like we need another day on this. There's so much

0:40:500:40:53

on this job to do. I just hope we don't run over time. It'd be really disappointing

0:40:530:40:57

cos everyone has put their heart and soul into this here.

0:40:570:41:00

I wouldn't say this job has totally broken us,

0:41:000:41:03

but it's come pretty close.

0:41:030:41:05

# Everybody hurts... #

0:41:050:41:10

That looks like Chris, actually. Although, to be honest,

0:41:100:41:13

this is not quite as stiff as Chris is at the moment.

0:41:130:41:16

I think I need stretching, that's what I need. I need racking.

0:41:180:41:22

Good old stretch.

0:41:220:41:23

HE GASPS

0:41:230:41:25

You have a go.

0:41:250:41:27

-Go on. Go on!

-Did you hear my elbow?

-Yeah, go on. Go on.

0:41:270:41:31

Push your bum down and your back up. Come on. Come on.

0:41:310:41:35

Come on. Come on.

0:41:350:41:38

-Got to breathe out.

-I'm up.

-Breathe out.

-I'm up.

0:41:400:41:43

Um, I feel like I'm interrupting something personal. What's...?

0:41:430:41:47

No, no. We came in and put the floor covering down

0:41:470:41:49

and I said, "I'll just show the exercises she told me to do."

0:41:490:41:53

-How's your back?

-It's, erm, broken, I think.

0:41:530:41:56

Yes, can I just point out, the BBC don't recommend these exercises.

0:41:580:42:02

I definitely wouldn't try these at home.

0:42:020:42:04

Our driving goal is to give Paul the new home his family needs.

0:42:060:42:10

With six kids, he's a pretty busy dad

0:42:100:42:12

and he doesn't get much time to himself,

0:42:120:42:15

but when he does, he's coaching the local under-eights

0:42:150:42:17

with his friend Alex. And where there's football, there's a Billy.

0:42:170:42:23

CHANTING: DIY SOS! DIY SOS!

0:42:260:42:31

We both know absolutely nothing about football.

0:42:340:42:38

We haven't got a Scooby-Doo. But we both just love having the crack

0:42:380:42:41

and if you look at the kids, they love it as well.

0:42:410:42:44

I know his passion is his children,

0:42:440:42:46

but yet he seems to really be enjoying himself in this football.

0:42:460:42:50

Hopefully, what we're doing will just take a big enormous amount

0:42:500:42:54

-of stress away from him.

-I think it'll take an enormous amount

0:42:540:42:58

of stress from the whole family.

0:42:580:43:00

They're living in a two-bedroomed house and there's six people

0:43:000:43:03

and they've got limited budgets. I mean, it's going to feel stressful.

0:43:030:43:07

He's got six kids, hardly any life and he still smiles.

0:43:070:43:12

Kick on, brother. Give us five. I'll give you a fiver later. Well done.

0:43:130:43:17

I scored first!

0:43:170:43:19

People in this world, some people are very unfortunate

0:43:190:43:22

and some are really fortunate. I'm not saying Paul's bad off

0:43:220:43:24

in the world of love because he loves his kids,

0:43:240:43:27

the kids love him. But material things, he's got none

0:43:270:43:31

and he copes and he smiles,

0:43:310:43:33

so, top man, really.

0:43:330:43:34

Well done!

0:43:370:43:38

It's amazing. You're looking at the future and the past,

0:43:380:43:40

Stanley Matthews in full flow.

0:43:400:43:42

Back on site, we're making headway,

0:43:440:43:46

but with so many empty rooms, I couldn't resist a bit of interior design.

0:43:460:43:50

What have you got? Oh, my goodness!

0:43:500:43:52

I've got all kinds of other bits and pieces in there as well.

0:43:520:43:55

-Did you buy it for them?

-Yeah.

-Nicholas!

-It's nice, isn't it?

0:43:550:43:58

Not really a heartless, shallow, horrible human being, are you?

0:43:580:44:02

Let's not get carried away.

0:44:020:44:03

-I managed to get a drum kit.

-Really?

-Like a proper drum kit.

0:44:030:44:07

-What colour is it?

-Black.

-Oh.

-What colour did you want it?

0:44:070:44:10

-Red, for goodness' sake!

-That's unbelievable, isn't it?

0:44:100:44:13

-Isn't that unbelievable?

-Honestly.

-Properly unbelievable.

0:44:130:44:16

'I think that conversation's over, don't you?'

0:44:160:44:18

Inside, it's finally shaping up nicely,

0:44:210:44:23

with the kitchen almost complete and the centrepiece has arrived,

0:44:230:44:26

a hand-crafted oak table kindly donated by local craftsman Michael.

0:44:260:44:32

-How long did it take you?

-It took about three days to make.

0:44:320:44:35

-I thought you might like to see this. This might cheer you up.

-Hey!

0:44:350:44:38

Oh, that looks ace.

0:44:380:44:41

Give it up for Mike. Really good.

0:44:410:44:43

I feel like we should give each and every person on this site

0:44:470:44:50

a round of applause. They have all worked their socks off,

0:44:500:44:53

in freezing conditions, for a family they barely know.

0:44:530:44:57

-You enjoyed it, even though it's hard work?

-Yeah. Slimming.

0:44:580:45:01

-You're half the man you were at the start of the day.

-I know and that's saying something.

0:45:010:45:05

And do you know what? There's not a miserable face amongst them.

0:45:050:45:09

They might be tired, but all round are just proud smiles.

0:45:090:45:13

These boys have been extraordinary,

0:45:140:45:17

absolutely flipping extraordinary. Your team are done.

0:45:170:45:21

Finished. Completed.

0:45:210:45:22

Isn't that amazing? And it's what, seven o'clock now?

0:45:220:45:25

Exactly on time. We said we had to get out of here

0:45:250:45:28

by seven o'clock on the last day and you've done it to the minute.

0:45:280:45:31

-To the minute.

-Genius. However, the rest of the people

0:45:310:45:34

working in there are nowhere near finishing.

0:45:340:45:36

We have to show this to them tomorrow morning, so they're going to have to be here until midnight,

0:45:360:45:40

one o'clock, two o'clock in the morning,

0:45:400:45:42

but at least the outside is done, we're not going to be making noise

0:45:420:45:45

and disturbing the neighbours.

0:45:450:45:48

Just nine days ago, we arrived to find Paul

0:45:550:45:58

and his six young kids struggling to live

0:45:580:46:00

in a cramped two-bedroomed house.

0:46:000:46:02

The house is just crazy. We just can't move.

0:46:020:46:07

It hasn't done my relationship with the kids much good, to be fair.

0:46:070:46:11

The children were on top of one another, with nowhere to play

0:46:110:46:14

or escape to for some alone time, time they desperately needed

0:46:140:46:18

as they learnt to adjust to life without Mum.

0:46:180:46:21

-Who's that a picture of, Jake?

-Mummy.

0:46:210:46:24

The kids were distraught, to be fair, and they still are.

0:46:240:46:27

This is the biggest domestic job we've ever done.

0:46:320:46:35

We sent out an SOS and people from the village

0:46:360:46:39

and surrounding towns and cities responded as always with generosity,

0:46:390:46:43

spirit and passion, moved by the family's story.

0:46:430:46:47

This lot didn't just go the extra mile, they ran a marathon for us.

0:46:470:46:51

And this is what they built.

0:46:530:46:55

From the front, you can see our new extension has doubled

0:46:550:46:58

the size of the home.

0:46:580:47:00

Energy-saving solar panels span the old and new roof space,

0:47:000:47:04

helping to reduce this family's household bills significantly.

0:47:040:47:08

Inside, we've knocked through

0:47:120:47:13

and opened up the whole of the downstairs,

0:47:130:47:16

creating a streamlined living room, kitchen-come-dining area

0:47:160:47:21

that allows Paul to keep an eye on everyone at all times

0:47:210:47:25

and for them to see him.

0:47:250:47:27

Upstairs, the original layout has had a gigantic overhaul.

0:47:290:47:33

There's a family bathroom

0:47:350:47:36

and Shannon and Katy get their own rooms.

0:47:360:47:39

We've built a two-storey extension in just nine days.

0:47:450:47:49

Now, the new downstairs floor area provides space for PJ

0:47:490:47:53

to have his own room, a proper boy's room.

0:47:530:47:57

And Paul, after a year on the sofa, will finally get to sleep

0:47:590:48:03

in a proper bed in his own bedroom,

0:48:030:48:06

complete with bathroom and walk-in wardrobe.

0:48:060:48:11

Upstairs, the extension has created the space for another two bedrooms,

0:48:110:48:16

one for Jake, in his favourite football colours,

0:48:160:48:20

and the other for the two youngest girls, Sophie and Emily,

0:48:200:48:24

taking this house from a two to a six-bedroom home.

0:48:240:48:27

You ready? OK. Open your eyes.

0:48:290:48:31

Wow.

0:48:350:48:37

My God.

0:48:370:48:38

Quite a change, isn't it?

0:48:400:48:42

That is unbelievable.

0:48:420:48:44

I could never have imagined it like this.

0:48:440:48:47

I know how attached you were to your old sofa,

0:48:470:48:49

but we had to get rid of it.

0:48:490:48:52

Look, have a little seat and look down the room.

0:48:520:48:55

That is just huge.

0:48:550:48:57

It is absolutely stunning.

0:48:570:48:59

-It's beautiful, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:48:590:49:02

And it's properly somewhere for you and the kids to be proud of.

0:49:020:49:05

Feels so open.

0:49:050:49:06

It felt very claustrophobic,

0:49:060:49:09

especially in this room.

0:49:090:49:10

Yeah, of course.

0:49:100:49:11

-Shall we go through and have a look at the kitchen?

-Yeah.

0:49:110:49:14

You like your cooking

0:49:180:49:20

but there's plenty of workspace to do your baking and stuff on.

0:49:200:49:22

It's just changed.

0:49:220:49:24

I just can't get my head round.

0:49:240:49:26

What do you think?

0:49:310:49:32

Brilliant, aren't they?

0:49:320:49:33

Can't put a price on stuff like that, can you?

0:49:350:49:38

This is Jake's, isn't it?

0:49:380:49:40

Yeah, looks like his handiwork.

0:49:400:49:41

And he's painted Mummy teaching him to play guitar.

0:49:410:49:44

You know, it's a good thing that they continue to talk about Mum,

0:49:500:49:53

and that Mum should continue to be part of,

0:49:530:49:55

you know, part of their lives all the time.

0:49:550:49:58

Oh, yeah. Yeah.

0:49:580:49:59

We ought to go round and look round the rest of the house.

0:50:030:50:05

This is for you.

0:50:050:50:07

A bed.

0:50:090:50:11

Yeah, a proper bed.

0:50:110:50:13

-Can I?

-Yes, mate, absolutely.

0:50:130:50:15

Oh, wow. How long since you properly slept in a bed?

0:50:180:50:21

It's about...

0:50:210:50:23

It'll be about a year-ish.

0:50:230:50:25

Pretty girl, wasn't she?

0:50:250:50:26

Yeah.

0:50:260:50:28

I don't really know what she saw in me, to be fair, so, yeah...

0:50:280:50:31

Oh, I do.

0:50:310:50:32

I think anybody who sees how you've managed...

0:50:320:50:35

can see what she saw in you.

0:50:350:50:36

What do you reckon?

0:50:460:50:47

He's going to love this.

0:50:470:50:49

To have somewhere nice and quiet to study,

0:50:490:50:51

so he can get on without any hassle is proper fantastic.

0:50:510:50:54

Shannon's room.

0:50:580:50:59

Oh.

0:50:590:51:01

That's stunning. She wanted her own room.

0:51:010:51:05

Bless her.

0:51:060:51:07

Well, she's got it now.

0:51:070:51:08

It will make her very happy.

0:51:080:51:10

Now who do you think this is?

0:51:120:51:14

Katy, cos it's got an elephant.

0:51:140:51:16

-And pink, that's like ultimate Katy, isn't it, pink elephants?

-Yeah.

0:51:160:51:20

Put two boys in here... It just...

0:51:200:51:22

Each room just feels massive now.

0:51:220:51:24

So this is the new building, so we thought it kind of made sense

0:51:260:51:29

to have the two youngest in together.

0:51:290:51:31

It is brilliant.

0:51:310:51:33

If you'd like to make your way through to Jake's bedroom.

0:51:340:51:37

Oh, he'll love this.

0:51:390:51:40

I never expected him to have his own room.

0:51:420:51:43

You kind of thought that we'd still end up making them share?

0:51:460:51:49

Yeah, how you've managed to make so many bedrooms is untrue.

0:51:490:51:53

You know everyone that's talked to you comes away with this impression

0:51:560:51:59

that you don't think you're doing a good job,

0:51:590:52:02

but you've done an amazing job.

0:52:020:52:04

I just like to keep myself on my toes

0:52:040:52:07

cos I want to make sure that what I promised Roxanne

0:52:070:52:10

I'm going to do, so I do be quite tough on myself

0:52:100:52:14

to make sure that I am going to fulfil that promise to her.

0:52:140:52:18

What did you promise about the house?

0:52:180:52:20

I promised I'd get it finished for the kids.

0:52:200:52:22

-It's one you can tick off now, isn't it?

-It's...

0:52:240:52:26

I feel like, I've got the kids right

0:52:280:52:30

and this is just like the final page in that book.

0:52:300:52:34

You know, I've done everything else, this is just...

0:52:340:52:38

Feels like my life is going to start again.

0:52:380:52:40

It really does.

0:52:410:52:42

Oh, wow!

0:52:470:52:48

Hey, me!

0:52:480:52:50

Wow!

0:52:500:52:52

This is so good.

0:52:520:52:54

Oh, wow!

0:52:540:52:56

Do you like it, what do you think?

0:52:560:52:57

-Cool! Cool!

-Awesome. Fabulous.

0:52:570:53:00

-Do you think they're excited?

-Oh, just a little bit.

0:53:010:53:04

Look at us there!

0:53:040:53:06

Wow.

0:53:060:53:07

Wow.

0:53:110:53:13

So marks out of ten for the room then?

0:53:130:53:15

-Ten.

-It's all right, is it?

-Yeah.

0:53:150:53:17

You happy to have a room of your own?

0:53:170:53:19

It's amazing.

0:53:190:53:20

What do you think?

0:53:240:53:25

I really, really, really like it.

0:53:260:53:28

-You got what you wanted, didn't you?

-Yeah.

0:53:300:53:32

Whoa!

0:53:370:53:39

Is this just my bedroom?

0:53:390:53:40

Yeah, it's just your bedroom, mate.

0:53:400:53:42

Cool.

0:53:420:53:43

Have a look round and see what you can see.

0:53:460:53:48

-Elephants.

-Elephants, eh?

0:53:480:53:50

-Excited?

-Yeah.

0:53:520:53:54

And go and sit on your bed and see how comfy that is.

0:53:540:53:57

Really comfy.

0:53:590:54:01

It's really comfy.

0:54:010:54:02

What's the best thing about having your own room?

0:54:020:54:05

So I can get to sleep.

0:54:050:54:07

So you can get to sleep properly.

0:54:070:54:09

A little bit overwhelmed.

0:54:150:54:16

This is your room.

0:54:210:54:22

What's this, Emily?

0:54:220:54:23

Mine.

0:54:250:54:27

Yes, it's yours, isn't it? Is it beautiful?

0:54:270:54:32

SHE GIGGLES

0:54:320:54:33

Bed.

0:54:350:54:36

Your bed.

0:54:360:54:37

You've watched Paul and the family go through such a tough time.

0:54:370:54:41

Must be... Must be nice to finally see this side of things.

0:54:430:54:46

It's wonderful, it really is, yep.

0:54:460:54:48

I'm just speechless.

0:54:510:54:53

What everybody's done, the village, you, the team, everybody.

0:54:530:54:58

Just... Just can't thank you enough.

0:54:580:55:00

It's just life-changing, isn't it? Let's face it.

0:55:000:55:03

Well, we've got one more surprise for you,

0:55:030:55:05

so let's get the coats on the kids

0:55:050:55:07

-Lovely.

0:55:070:55:09

KIDS EXCLAIM

0:55:130:55:15

Oh, my word!

0:55:150:55:16

-Oh, look at this.

-My gosh.

0:55:190:55:21

KIDS EXCLAIM

0:55:240:55:26

Are you kidding me?!

0:55:340:55:36

Drums!

0:55:360:55:38

We've got some drums.

0:55:380:55:40

LAUGHING

0:55:400:55:42

Ha-ha!

0:55:430:55:44

That is awesome, Jake.

0:55:440:55:46

This is amazing.

0:55:490:55:50

Oh, wow!

0:55:550:55:56

And then footie!

0:55:560:55:57

-You're in goal.

-Yay!

0:55:570:55:59

PJ.

0:55:590:56:00

Here, here!

0:56:000:56:02

CHEERING

0:56:020:56:04

I need you all to come outside so that we can go and say thank you

0:56:110:56:14

to the people who've done all this work, OK?

0:56:140:56:16

You ready? Come on, then.

0:56:160:56:17

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE KIDS: Thank you.

0:56:240:56:26

Wow.

0:56:280:56:29

As you can see, it was quite a turnout to turn this around.

0:56:350:56:38

Obviously I get to chat to you all through the week,

0:56:380:56:41

can they hear it from you why this was such a big deal

0:56:410:56:43

and why it was so important to do this?

0:56:430:56:45

I just can't believe what you've all done for me, to be fair with you.

0:56:450:56:49

Finishing this just helped us move on now.

0:56:500:56:53

Yeah.

0:56:550:56:56

Roxanne would have been so proud of you all.

0:56:560:56:58

She really would have been.

0:56:580:57:00

I just can't thank everybody enough, I think you're marvellous,

0:57:010:57:05

absolutely marvellous.

0:57:050:57:06

Daddy, look your bedroom.

0:57:080:57:09

Yeah mine, I've got a bed, I've actually got a bed!

0:57:090:57:12

Yeah, I just got given a little note by PJ as he was sat in his room.

0:57:140:57:17

He made a little note saying, "Thank you to the DIY SOS team,"

0:57:170:57:21

which is basically what you all are.

0:57:210:57:23

"Thank you so much, you have given us the most amazing things

0:57:230:57:27

"and you deserve much more than a card.

0:57:270:57:29

"Thank you from PJ".

0:57:290:57:30

OK, so go and say hello.

0:57:420:57:44

Brilliant.

0:57:470:57:48

Thanks ever so much. Thank you.

0:57:500:57:51

We did the kitchen.

0:57:540:57:55

At the end of the day what we've done is built a house

0:57:580:58:00

and of course that in no way makes up for the loss of a mother.

0:58:000:58:04

And as the children grow older they will get angry,

0:58:040:58:06

probably in their teenage years when they reflect on that,

0:58:060:58:09

and think that nobody cares,

0:58:090:58:10

but it's very difficult to think that when you live in a house

0:58:100:58:12

that was built by people who do.

0:58:120:58:15

That's what this lot have done.

0:58:150:58:17

They've made a different future for the children.

0:58:170:58:19

Maybe you know someone in your street, in your village, in your town

0:58:190:58:23

that you could lend a helping hand to.
