Hello and welcome to DIY SOS.

0:00:040:00:06

This week, we're coming to you from Greater Manchester.

0:00:060:00:09

So, here we are in Coronation Street.

0:00:090:00:11

Well, not really, but this close-knit community is just

0:00:110:00:13

a few miles from that fictional world.

0:00:130:00:16

We're here to help a mum, dad, and triplets trapped in a tiny house.

0:00:180:00:24

-Depressed.

-Yeah, it does get you down a bit.

0:00:240:00:27

To be honest, a lot of the time, I get on with it

0:00:270:00:29

cos you have to get through the day with the children,

0:00:290:00:31

but some days, it does bear down heavy on me.

0:00:310:00:34

It's every night for her. It's horrible.

0:00:340:00:37

How she manages to keep a brave face on and just get on with it,

0:00:370:00:41

it's amazing.

0:00:410:00:42

The whole family is involved. Granny...

0:00:420:00:46

People might just think, "Triplets? I've had three children."

0:00:460:00:49

But not all at once, you haven't. It's so much harder.

0:00:490:00:52

Grandpa...

0:00:520:00:53

Obviously, grannies help out and great-grandmas and everybody,

0:00:530:00:56

sisters, brothers, you know, everybody.

0:00:560:00:58

Everyone mucks in, but she's still left with them on her own.

0:00:580:01:01

It's very hard work.

0:01:010:01:02

Even Great-grandma...

0:01:020:01:03

I never, ever thought anybody would do

0:01:030:01:06

anything like this for our family.

0:01:060:01:09

It may be a small house, but it's a big build.

0:01:100:01:13

But all we're doing on this one, look...

0:01:130:01:16

We're just going backwards.

0:01:160:01:17

This was going to be a little one.

0:01:190:01:20

-This was going to be a manageable one.

-How far are we behind?

0:01:200:01:23

I reckon we're two days behind, actually.

0:01:230:01:25

As ever, we'll be relying on

0:01:250:01:27

the generosity of local trades to help out.

0:01:270:01:30

Sometimes, it's better to give back than it is to receive.

0:01:300:01:33

All the usual suspects are here, but we're not enough.

0:01:330:01:36

We need an army. Luckily, we have one!

0:01:360:01:38

CHEERING

0:01:380:01:40

This is DIY SOS: The Big Build.

0:01:400:01:43

Rebecca and Steve are a one-in-8,000 family.

0:01:520:01:57

They are parents to naturally-conceived triplets.

0:01:570:02:00

In 2010, Rebecca gave birth to Archie, Isabel, and Grace.

0:02:020:02:10

This is where they live.

0:02:100:02:12

It's damp, dilapidated and dangerous.

0:02:120:02:15

OK...

0:02:170:02:19

Dad Steve's work often takes him away.

0:02:190:02:22

He was doing what he could to the house,

0:02:220:02:24

but then Rebecca went for her first scan.

0:02:240:02:27

I remember sitting there thinking, "I'm having triplets."

0:02:270:02:31

And even now, I don't think it's ever something that can sink in.

0:02:310:02:35

I just see them as my three children, but, yeah, we were really shocked.

0:02:350:02:41

Rebecca had joined an incredibly select club -

0:02:420:02:45

just one in 8,000 pregnancies are naturally conceived triplets.

0:02:450:02:49

The whole pregnancy was really worrying,

0:02:490:02:52

because I had to have scans every two weeks.

0:02:520:02:54

and be referred to an obstetrician,

0:02:540:02:56

cos it's a high-risk pregnancy, and they did tell us, you know,

0:02:560:02:59

to be prepared for a loss of one of the triplets

0:02:590:03:02

or for all of them not to have been born,

0:03:020:03:05

but luckily, everything was fine.

0:03:050:03:08

Like all triplets, Rebecca's babies had to be delivered early.

0:03:100:03:14

They had the big sheet up, and I just kept thinking,

0:03:140:03:17

"Please, all cry," and I can never even, Steve, as a mother,

0:03:170:03:21

I can never put into words the relief that you feel when they cry.

0:03:210:03:24

Because some babies don't come round,

0:03:250:03:28

and I was just convinced that one of them wouldn't or something wouldn't.

0:03:280:03:32

Even now, if you could bottle that feeling, it was just...

0:03:320:03:36

-Brilliant.

-Yeah, it was nice, wasn't it?

0:03:370:03:39

It was a bit heartbreaking, because honestly, I couldn't hold them,

0:03:390:03:42

they had to take them straight away from me.

0:03:420:03:44

But when they all cried, I'd been so worried for nine months,

0:03:460:03:50

because I was convinced that something was going to go wrong,

0:03:500:03:53

I'll never forget that sound. Ever.

0:03:530:03:56

Both of us have still said now, we've never got over it.

0:03:560:03:59

People say, "Oh, how do you get your head round that?"

0:03:590:04:02

And it's like, we still haven't.

0:04:020:04:04

They know they're blessed, but the children have been home

0:04:060:04:09

for nearly two years now,

0:04:090:04:10

and the house is just getting worse and worse.

0:04:100:04:13

It's affecting Rebecca's health.

0:04:130:04:15

-Depressed.

-Yeah, it does get you down a bit.

0:04:160:04:19

To be honest, a lot of the time, I get on with it,

0:04:190:04:21

cos you have to get through the day with the children,

0:04:210:04:23

but some days, it really does bear down heavy on me.

0:04:230:04:26

OK, let's go upstairs.

0:04:260:04:28

With Steve away rigging stages and sports events,

0:04:280:04:31

there's no way they can get this sorted.

0:04:310:04:34

I could be away three weeks of a month.

0:04:340:04:37

And we're fighting, because I'm resentful that Steve's...

0:04:370:04:40

not that he's got to go to work,

0:04:400:04:41

but that I'm here with the children all day,

0:04:410:04:43

-but that I'm here with the children all day, every day.

-It's horrible.

0:04:430:04:46

How she manages to keep a brave face on and just get on with it,

0:04:460:04:50

it's amazing, you know what I mean?

0:04:500:04:51

In this house...

0:04:510:04:53

You're just constantly running around after everything.

0:04:530:04:56

They haven't got any room to do anything.

0:04:560:04:58

They can't even watch me cook. The kitchen is just...

0:04:580:05:00

Doors are falling off. It's damp on the wall,

0:05:000:05:02

they're running their hands on the wall where the damp is and things.

0:05:020:05:06

So I have to feel like...

0:05:060:05:07

I just don't think I can face another winter.

0:05:070:05:10

You can see your breath in the kitchen,

0:05:100:05:12

and you have to stand there with a coat on in the kitchen.

0:05:120:05:16

Of course, Steve's done what he can.

0:05:160:05:19

I've thought I'm doing really well,

0:05:190:05:20

and then as soon as they were born, I don't think any amount of money

0:05:200:05:24

that I could earn could afford to pay for what the kids need.

0:05:240:05:27

You never seem to have the money to finish anything, you know?

0:05:270:05:30

Every penny and every minute goes on three lots of everything.

0:05:300:05:34

There's nothing left for fixing the house.

0:05:340:05:37

Rebecca is left trapped and isolated.

0:05:370:05:39

She can't take the triplets out without help.

0:05:390:05:42

I feel like I'm cooped up in a padded cell, in this...

0:05:420:05:46

You know, this safe little room,

0:05:460:05:48

where I've blocked it off for the children.

0:05:480:05:51

It really, really gets me down.

0:05:510:05:53

Everyone suffers.

0:05:530:05:54

The two bedrooms mean constant sleepless nights for the parents,

0:05:540:05:58

and their restless toddlers.

0:05:580:06:00

Even now, sometimes they have nights where you put them in bed,

0:06:000:06:02

and in half an hour, they're up again.

0:06:020:06:04

You put them back down, and another half, you're back in.

0:06:040:06:07

The thing is, most people with one child would leave them,

0:06:070:06:10

and say, "Oh, well, you leave them for a bit,

0:06:100:06:12

"they go back to sleep" or whatever, but with ours, if you leave them

0:06:120:06:15

to cry for two minutes, they wake all the others up.

0:06:150:06:17

They've woke the other two up.

0:06:170:06:19

If not for my mum and Steve, I literally cannot...

0:06:200:06:23

And I'm like this, I'm in tears.

0:06:230:06:25

I've had a bad night with the children.

0:06:250:06:27

I think I'm never going to get to this day,

0:06:270:06:29

never be able to get through the day.

0:06:290:06:30

I can't cope with the crying any more. There's three lots of crying.

0:06:300:06:33

An extended family can only do so much to help,

0:06:370:06:41

which is why we are here,

0:06:410:06:42

and Rebecca and Steve have moved out.

0:06:420:06:45

They're staying at Steve's gran's while we do the build.

0:06:450:06:48

What do you think people don't understand about having triplets?

0:06:480:06:52

Just how hard it really is, how demanding of time,

0:06:520:06:56

how there's just three of everything.

0:06:560:06:58

Whether you pick one up and do something for one,

0:06:580:07:01

the other two come over to you.

0:07:010:07:02

-Climbing on you.

-Yes, you can only pick up two at a time.

0:07:020:07:05

When you go out...

0:07:050:07:07

Grace!

0:07:070:07:08

-This is a climbing one, this one, isn't it?

-Yes.

0:07:080:07:11

When you go out...have you thought of buying a sheepdog?

0:07:110:07:13

LAUGHTER

0:07:130:07:15

I don't have...

0:07:150:07:16

ALL: Oooh!

0:07:160:07:18

Come on.

0:07:180:07:19

This is almost impossible, to have a conversation with you while we're...

0:07:190:07:23

Why don't we just bail out at the moment and come and meet

0:07:230:07:26

the guys outside, and we can get them off to work straightaway.

0:07:260:07:29

There you go, look. There's another one!

0:07:310:07:34

There's another one as well. They go.

0:07:360:07:38

How are you doing, Steve?

0:07:380:07:40

-All right?

-How are you doing, bud?

0:07:400:07:42

-Nice to meet you.

-All right, mate?

0:07:420:07:44

THEY GREET EACH OTHER

0:07:440:07:45

-Chris. Pleased to meet you. You're a juggler?

-Yes.

0:07:470:07:51

LAUGHTER But I've only got two hands.

0:07:510:07:53

Can you stay still, young lady? That's it. Do what you're told.

0:07:530:07:56

See, the discipline I've got with children!

0:07:560:07:58

If it's contained, it's a bit of weight off your mind,

0:07:580:08:01

but anywhere that's open, on your own, is just a nightmare.

0:08:010:08:04

You find they keep each other amused.

0:08:040:08:07

If my parents had put me in one of them,

0:08:070:08:09

I might be a bit taller.

0:08:090:08:11

There are six of us,

0:08:120:08:13

and the children are running rings around us, to be fair.

0:08:130:08:16

Time to beat a hasty retreat.

0:08:160:08:18

Out of nothing but the goodness of their hearts,

0:08:230:08:25

the trades of Manchester have turned out in force, thank goodness.

0:08:250:08:29

I guarantee you'll have fun

0:08:290:08:31

and enjoy yourself whilst working really hard.

0:08:310:08:34

But there is no money in return, and it's also for the BBC,

0:08:340:08:36

so there's no advertising either.

0:08:360:08:38

So, on that basis, would anybody like to leave now?

0:08:380:08:41

There you go. See that? Amazing.

0:08:410:08:43

People always say to me, "They don't really do it for nothing."

0:08:430:08:45

Yes, they do. So thank you very much.

0:08:450:08:47

There's a really good sense of community around here.

0:08:500:08:52

Many of the trades come from just around the corner.

0:08:520:08:55

Stuart and Dave, nice. What are you doing for us here?

0:08:550:08:58

I've come to do the central heating. The boiler and radiators.

0:08:580:09:01

-The plumbing for us.

-The plumbing, yeah.

-Lovely.

0:09:010:09:03

And why have you decided to join in and get involved?

0:09:030:09:05

We just think it's a good cause, don't we?

0:09:050:09:08

You're not going to get paid for it.

0:09:080:09:09

You're not going to be able to advertise.

0:09:090:09:11

You haven't seen how much I eat.

0:09:110:09:12

LAUGHTER

0:09:120:09:14

That we can look after, mate. That's funny.

0:09:140:09:16

So why did you decide to join in, then?

0:09:160:09:18

I'd like to think that somebody would do it for me as well, you know?

0:09:180:09:21

-So it was just a good cause, really.

-Yeah.

0:09:210:09:23

-Happy to join in?

-Yeah, brilliant.

0:09:230:09:25

-You got kids yourself?

-Yeah, three kids, yeah.

0:09:250:09:27

-What ages?

-Oh, hell...

0:09:270:09:29

HE LAUGHS

0:09:290:09:31

-Oh, no!

-You've put me on the spot now! Er...

0:09:310:09:34

35...

0:09:340:09:35

..28 and 27, I think.

0:09:360:09:38

Or 29 and 27.

0:09:380:09:40

How old are you?!

0:09:420:09:43

Old enough.

0:09:430:09:44

He's in trouble when he gets home, isn't he?

0:09:440:09:47

Now, here's a question for you.

0:09:500:09:51

How do you fit five people into a two-bedroom house?

0:09:510:09:54

I don't know the answer, but I know someone who does.

0:09:540:09:57

Our designer, Gabrielle Blackman.

0:09:570:09:58

Downstairs, they've really only been living in one room,

0:10:010:10:03

so in the sitting room, because the kitchen is just unusable

0:10:030:10:08

and dangerous, and she didn't want the kids anywhere near it.

0:10:080:10:11

The space that we are turning into the kitchen was freezing cold

0:10:110:10:14

and really unpleasant, so they were in this one,

0:10:140:10:17

tiny room to eat, live and play.

0:10:170:10:20

Here's Gabby's plan.

0:10:200:10:22

The old kitchen has been knocked down, so we can replace it

0:10:220:10:25

with the utility room to deal with the mountains of washing.

0:10:250:10:28

The back room becomes a kitchen diner with French windows

0:10:280:10:32

onto a new, low-maintenance garden.

0:10:320:10:34

The front room gets a more grown-up treatment. Very posh.

0:10:340:10:39

Upstairs, Archie gets a room of his own.

0:10:390:10:42

The girls move to the front, and we're adding a whole new floor

0:10:420:10:46

so that Mum and Dad can have a room of their own.

0:10:460:10:49

It fits, but only just. As long as nothing changes, we should be fine.

0:10:540:10:58

Now, to get this job done,

0:10:580:10:59

we had to do a little prep work before we could start.

0:10:590:11:02

So what was here before was a wreck of an old red-brick building.

0:11:020:11:07

Guys came in, they've dug all this out, they put the foundations in,

0:11:070:11:10

the slabs in, they've even moved the drains around.

0:11:100:11:13

We've got to put a pitched roof on this, little slate pitched roof.

0:11:130:11:16

-Like that one?

-Yeah.

0:11:160:11:17

But we're going to put some little roof windows into it.

0:11:170:11:20

It'll be pretty and nice, and lots of light in it as well.

0:11:200:11:22

-It's not the hugest house, is it?

-No.

0:11:220:11:24

It's tiny. That's what it is.

0:11:240:11:26

Very much like the builder I was just talking to.

0:11:260:11:29

Tight old space, isn't it? Only a little house.

0:11:290:11:32

Very small, isn't it?

0:11:320:11:34

We can't really throw a lot of people at this, can we?

0:11:340:11:36

-No, it's going to be very managed, this one, I think.

-Yeah.

0:11:360:11:39

-The right people in the right places all the time.

-Yeah.

-No dead weight.

0:11:390:11:44

-So move.

-That's a nice start to the day, isn't it, really?

0:11:440:11:47

Assessing space is one of Chris' many fortes.

0:11:490:11:53

20ml in here, and next door will be 50, 62.5, 62.5.

0:11:530:11:59

So it'll be 70ml. So you're 5ml over.

0:11:590:12:03

Genius, Chris. He's full of surprises.

0:12:030:12:05

Shame it doesn't run throughout the whole team, though.

0:12:050:12:08

This is what we've got.

0:12:080:12:10

We were trying to write "intermediate",

0:12:100:12:12

but we've got "imedit..."

0:12:120:12:14

"Imedictate".

0:12:140:12:16

"Imedicate".

0:12:160:12:17

But then, it's got better.

0:12:170:12:19

That's the second attempt.

0:12:200:12:22

So, because I couldn't spell it, I'm going to put "2 gang 2-ways".

0:12:220:12:26

It's easier.

0:12:260:12:27

-I can spell that.

-Clear as mud, Billy.

0:12:270:12:30

Thanks very much for not clearing that up.

0:12:300:12:33

There's a lot to do before the loft company get stuck in.

0:12:330:12:36

The family needs space,

0:12:360:12:37

so I reckon we should take that chimney down

0:12:370:12:39

right through the house. Think of the room it'll make.

0:12:390:12:42

-Whose idea was it?

-I don't want to say. I don't think it's important.

0:12:440:12:47

-It's not...

-You don't want to mention whose idea it was?

0:12:470:12:49

I don't think there's any need. It's not about that.

0:12:490:12:51

It's about the end product. It's not about who...

0:12:510:12:53

It's not about who comes up with those great ideas.

0:12:530:12:56

Give Nick a round of applause for his fantastic idea, please.

0:12:560:12:59

Thank you very much. Well done.

0:12:590:13:01

THEY APPLAUD

0:13:010:13:04

-He's so humble!

-What an incredible guy.

0:13:040:13:07

I'd just like to thank my agent, and...

0:13:070:13:11

There is, of course, no 'I' in "team",

0:13:110:13:13

but there is one in "Nick".

0:13:130:13:14

One person's bright idea is a designer's nightmare, of course.

0:13:160:13:20

So, because the chimney breast is now coming out,

0:13:200:13:23

it opens up a lot of possibilities,

0:13:230:13:27

which is really, really exciting and brilliant,

0:13:270:13:29

but sort of really stressful to do it right now,

0:13:290:13:32

because we'd ordered Kitchen A with the chimney breast situation,

0:13:320:13:35

and now that's changed, so I've got

0:13:350:13:37

the guy from the kitchen company coming down.

0:13:370:13:40

Yada, yada. You just can't please some people, can you?

0:13:400:13:43

We've just given her a load more kitchen.

0:13:430:13:45

Surely she can persuade Brian to do something great with that space?

0:13:450:13:48

So now, this is coming out completely.

0:13:480:13:50

Now we're taking it all out. A quick redraw...

0:13:500:13:53

Oh, Brian, that's brilliant.

0:13:530:13:55

And we've managed to then lift the cooker away from the kiddies,

0:13:550:13:58

so it's in a safer place.

0:13:580:13:59

That's really lucky, cos the schedule,

0:13:590:14:01

unfortunately, has not moved.

0:14:010:14:02

The chimney breast has moved, but the schedule remains the same.

0:14:020:14:06

That's not lucky at all.

0:14:060:14:07

What we've taken on is more than just the house.

0:14:070:14:10

It's where Rebecca was born. She went to the school opposite.

0:14:100:14:13

While her sisters look after the triplets, I grab the chance to talk.

0:14:130:14:17

Why is the house such a big deal?

0:14:170:14:19

What is it about it that you don't want to leave?

0:14:190:14:21

Well, obviously, because I grew up there, so it's got a lot

0:14:210:14:23

of memories for me, and Stephen grew up on the street behind,

0:14:230:14:26

and we both went to the school across the road at the same time,

0:14:260:14:28

and I want my children to attend that school.

0:14:280:14:31

It's the very house where their love story began.

0:14:310:14:34

You got together how long now?

0:14:340:14:36

Well, when we were children, we used to play together

0:14:360:14:38

and he used to live on the street opposite.

0:14:380:14:40

But not snogging or anything?

0:14:400:14:41

We had our first kiss together when we were very young.

0:14:410:14:44

-Before we went to secondary school. In the house we live in now.

-No!

0:14:440:14:46

-Really?

-Yeah, because his parents used to live at the back of us.

0:14:460:14:49

So we had our first kiss together.

0:14:490:14:50

-Did you kiss him or did he kiss you?

-He kissed me.

0:14:500:14:53

-Are you sure? Really?

-Yes.

-You didn't force him?

-No!

0:14:530:14:55

-Because he was younger, wasn't he?

-Yeah.

0:14:550:14:57

SHE LAUGHS

0:14:570:14:58

'Of course, Steve can't praise Becky highly enough.'

0:14:580:15:02

Words can't describe how hard it must be for her, you know,

0:15:020:15:06

when I'm not there and she's on her own.

0:15:060:15:07

I've done it on me own, you know, she's a credit to 'em.

0:15:070:15:10

They're really lucky that they've got a mum like Becky,

0:15:100:15:13

you know what I mean? She's just great fun, you know,

0:15:130:15:16

we always just have a top laugh together.

0:15:160:15:18

She's like me best mate.

0:15:180:15:19

'This build will make three small children very happy.

0:15:210:15:24

'But one big kid isn't his usual smiling self.'

0:15:240:15:27

I think I'd sooner be somewhere else today cos it's a special day.

0:15:270:15:31

It's only his birthday.

0:15:340:15:36

'He should know better than that.

0:15:360:15:38

'This is DIY SOS, and we've got in cake!'

0:15:380:15:43

ALL: # Happy birthday to you! #

0:15:430:15:47

CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:15:470:15:49

-That's my slice...

-That brick there.

0:15:490:15:52

..full brick, and then quarter bricks for the rest of you.

0:15:520:15:55

'Trouble is, our celebrations are a little premature.'

0:15:570:16:01

What's happened with the loft?

0:16:010:16:03

The company that was doing the loft have unfortunately pulled out.

0:16:030:16:08

-Now? Today?

-Day One, they've legged it.

0:16:080:16:11

People say to us, "D'you have a lot of problems with people?"

0:16:110:16:14

And the truth of the matter is we don't.

0:16:140:16:17

-Well...

-But if you are going to pull out,

0:16:170:16:19

if you decide to join in and you want to pull out,

0:16:190:16:22

pull out two or three days beforehand

0:16:220:16:24

so that we can find someone else.

0:16:240:16:25

Now, we're halfway through the first day,

0:16:250:16:27

and now we've suddenly decided,

0:16:270:16:28

or they've decided they're not involved.

0:16:280:16:31

'We need to sort this and fast. No loft is not an option.

0:16:310:16:35

'The telephones will be red hot

0:16:350:16:37

'while we press on with the rest of the day's work.

0:16:370:16:39

'The loft company may have let us down

0:16:410:16:42

'but there are 40 trades here putting their all into it.

0:16:420:16:45

'Look, the new extension is already up!'

0:16:450:16:47

-All done and dusted?

-All done and dusted.

0:16:470:16:49

How long did this take? Six hours?

0:16:490:16:51

-Yeah, five, six hours, something like that.

-Smashing.

0:16:510:16:53

My mate Mike. Whilst you've been out the front yapping,

0:16:530:16:56

me, Mike and the boys, we've been out here, stripping wallpaper,

0:16:560:16:59

-knocking this one up.

-Is he helping you?

0:16:590:17:00

-No, he was texting most of the time.

-Was he?

0:17:000:17:02

I have been checking what's for dinner.

0:17:020:17:05

'We're doing this for Rebecca, Steve and the triplets,

0:17:050:17:08

'but now we've got a visit from the previous owner, her mother,

0:17:080:17:11

'and one of Rebecca's sisters.'

0:17:110:17:13

-Recognise it?

-No.

-Not really.

-This used to be your house, didn't it?

0:17:150:17:20

-It did, yes.

-Before Rebecca bought it off you, this was your house.

-Yes.

0:17:200:17:23

This is where you grew up.

0:17:230:17:24

Yeah, never lived anywhere else apart from here.

0:17:240:17:26

-So this is home for you.

-Yep. Well, not now.

0:17:260:17:29

-This is Julian.

-Hi.

-Hi, Julian.

-How are you, all right?

0:17:320:17:35

-D'you recognise him at all off the telly?

-Erm, sort of vaguely.

0:17:350:17:41

Put your hand up like this.

0:17:410:17:43

-Imagine him with a cake in his hand.

-Ah, now, yeah!

0:17:430:17:46

THEY LAUGH

0:17:460:17:48

-You lived here, what's the community like?

-Everybody's very neighbourly.

0:17:540:17:57

There's neighbours who live on the other street

0:17:570:18:00

and I've known them, we've known them,

0:18:000:18:01

I'm 23, I've known them all my life.

0:18:010:18:03

So it's no great surprise to you

0:18:030:18:04

that we've had all these people volunteer,

0:18:040:18:06

come forward and help out?

0:18:060:18:07

Oh, no. All we've had is a good response.

0:18:070:18:09

Everybody's said she really deserves it.

0:18:090:18:12

She really, you know, she really needs it.

0:18:120:18:14

We're really happy for you.

0:18:140:18:17

'The extended family are dotted throughout this neighbourhood.

0:18:170:18:20

'Great-grandma Joyce lives just around the corner.'

0:18:200:18:23

What do you make of the fact

0:18:230:18:25

that everyone's turned up to sort out the house?

0:18:250:18:27

I can't express how I feel, to be truthful.

0:18:280:18:31

I never, ever thought anybody would do anything like that for our family.

0:18:310:18:37

I really didn't.

0:18:370:18:38

Also, what a godsend if it could be done,

0:18:380:18:41

cos you saw what it was like, you know.

0:18:410:18:44

If the house gets sorted out, how does life change for the family?

0:18:440:18:48

I think it would be easier to get them to go to sleep at night,

0:18:500:18:54

cos they've got their own rooms, whereas it's chaos at the moment.

0:18:540:18:57

I can get Archie to go to sleep easy on his own,

0:18:570:19:01

but as soon as he hears the girls, or vice versa, they're awake, you know.

0:19:010:19:06

"Oh, they're up, I'm up," you know.

0:19:060:19:08

So, for 'em to have a room of their own,

0:19:080:19:11

they won't all be in Becky's and Steven's, you know.

0:19:110:19:15

And as they get older, they'll be able to bring their friends home.

0:19:150:19:18

You couldn't have brought them home to the house previously.

0:19:180:19:21

'Let's face it, they wouldn't want to bring them back to this either!

0:19:230:19:27

'That kitchen chimney breast is coming down in double quick time.'

0:19:270:19:30

Normally take about a week to do that.

0:19:300:19:33

Four of us, four or five of us.

0:19:330:19:35

About seven hours.

0:19:370:19:38

You think to yourself, "Do they really do it in that sort of time?"

0:19:420:19:45

And I think that's just proved it.

0:19:450:19:47

-Gentlemen, top effort.

-Appreciate it.

0:19:470:19:50

I think one of your colleagues has just collapsed upstairs.

0:19:500:19:53

Look at the extra room they're going to get in there now.

0:19:540:19:57

Take that horrible little cupboard thing out in the corner,

0:19:570:20:00

suddenly it's a decent space, innit?

0:20:000:20:03

All we can say is it's a good job you're here(!)

0:20:030:20:05

Them boys would have struggled, wouldn't you, lads?

0:20:050:20:07

You would have struggled, wouldn't ya?

0:20:070:20:09

Thanks very much, that's very nice of you(!)

0:20:090:20:11

'Everyone's a comedian, aren't they(?)

0:20:110:20:13

'I feel great now, actually. But this house is no good

0:20:130:20:16

'without a room for mum and dad in the loft,

0:20:160:20:18

'and we still don't have one.'

0:20:180:20:20

It's been an absolute nightmare, so at this stage, we would normally

0:20:200:20:24

have the floor in, we would have the structure up for the dormer...

0:20:240:20:29

At the moment, it's still full of rubbish.

0:20:290:20:31

I've never known a start in SOS like this ever.

0:20:310:20:34

It's been a nightmare.

0:20:340:20:36

'Mark is genuinely worried, as are we all.

0:20:360:20:39

'If we don't get this sorted, we simply won't finish on time.'

0:20:390:20:42

'After a night of pulling in favours,

0:20:490:20:51

'I'm very relieved to say a loft company is on their way.

0:20:510:20:54

'But they have changed the plan one tiny bit.'

0:20:540:20:57

Basically, we've got to take the whole of the roof off

0:20:590:21:02

and drop all these ceilings. It's a bit more than we thought,

0:21:020:21:06

but at this stage of the game that's what's...

0:21:060:21:09

It's going to be a really mucky, dusty day today.

0:21:090:21:13

'So, it's back to the drawing board for Gabby again.

0:21:130:21:16

'And whilst he's doing that there's the small matter of

0:21:180:21:21

'getting the steel ridge in for the roof. Here it comes.'

0:21:210:21:24

We're going to drag it over and past.

0:21:240:21:26

Somebody's going to support it at that end for safety.

0:21:280:21:31

-Six lads then will lift it on top, job done.

-Right, lovely.

0:21:310:21:35

You could learn a thing or two from him, you know.

0:21:350:21:37

So it'll come out from here directly all the way to the edge of

0:21:450:21:48

the building, which will make this a substantial sized room.

0:21:480:21:50

A lot of work to get there, though.

0:21:520:21:54

The first stage of the chaos. I can't even tell what time it is,

0:22:010:22:04

but...got to have all the builders here inside the next hour,

0:22:040:22:07

so we've got to have all this down and out.

0:22:070:22:09

Running out of time rapidly.

0:22:090:22:11

You were covered in mess yesterday, and now here you are again

0:22:170:22:20

-and we've taken down another 100 years worth of rubbish.

-Yeah.

0:22:200:22:24

-Nothing else better to do at the weekend?

-Got loads of things to do.

0:22:240:22:28

-Look at the state of the house, so...

-Yeah, I know.

0:22:280:22:32

'I've lost count of the number of skips we've taken out of this place.

0:22:320:22:36

'There isn't going to be anything left

0:22:360:22:38

'and we're running out of time to rebuild it,

0:22:380:22:40

'but we are ready for the lofting.'

0:22:400:22:42

All in, all in, here we go.

0:22:420:22:45

This has been a serious uphill struggle trying to get this loft done

0:22:450:22:49

and thank yous all very much for coming here at the last minute

0:22:490:22:51

and pulling it out because otherwise it would not happen

0:22:510:22:54

if yous hadn't turned up.

0:22:540:22:55

So have we got a problem with the stairs?

0:22:550:22:57

Yeah, but we'll overcome that.

0:22:570:22:59

-What's the problem?

-He's on holiday.

-No!

0:22:590:23:03

So we'll try another number tonight.

0:23:030:23:05

Right, OK. I'm going to hand it over to you boys

0:23:050:23:08

and hope yous can get it done in a couple of days!

0:23:080:23:10

-No worries, mate, we'll get it sorted.

-Thank yous very much.

0:23:100:23:13

'Yeah, but guess what?

0:23:160:23:17

'The loft team want even more changes.'

0:23:170:23:19

You asked for, what, an extra couple of walls to be taken down?

0:23:190:23:22

Yeah, just on the stairs. They were a bit unsafe, so...

0:23:220:23:24

A bit wiggly, were they?

0:23:240:23:25

Yeah, better to take 'em down, be on the safe side

0:23:250:23:27

and just do 'em back up, like, so, make a better job anyway.

0:23:270:23:30

Is there anything else to take out of this house now?

0:23:300:23:33

Let's just take the rest of it, take all the walls upstairs.

0:23:330:23:36

Yeah, if we took the whole thing out and left that new timber frame

0:23:360:23:38

extension at the back, that'd be nice, wouldn't it?

0:23:380:23:41

A really nice front door on it.

0:23:410:23:43

THEY LAUGH

0:23:430:23:45

'It's a good job we've got a sense of humour.

0:23:460:23:49

'Not sure Gabby's laughing though.

0:23:490:23:51

'Yeah, best to leave her alone, I think.

0:23:530:23:55

'I know, let's go and find Billy.'

0:23:550:23:57

Doing all right down there, sunshine?

0:23:590:24:01

Yeah, doing a bit of fishing at the moment. I think it might be there.

0:24:010:24:05

Look at that. To be that size again, eh?

0:24:060:24:08

What we're doing at the moment, we're trying to get the feeds

0:24:080:24:11

from where the consumer unit's going to be into the utility room.

0:24:110:24:15

-You going to catch up all right?

-Yeah.

0:24:150:24:17

-Thursday night.

-Thursday night we promised.

0:24:180:24:21

-That's tomorrow night.

-Yeah.

-For the whole thing?

-Yeah.

0:24:230:24:26

Yeah, all the way.

0:24:260:24:27

'Ambitious fools! No chance.'

0:24:290:24:31

The other wall.

0:24:340:24:35

NOISE OBSCURES SPEECH

0:24:370:24:39

'How can such a tiny house give us so many problems?

0:24:390:24:43

'They're stacking up everywhere.'

0:24:430:24:45

Because of the way the loft has been built this time,

0:24:450:24:47

we haven't been able to really firm up the drawings.

0:24:470:24:51

We've just had to build it,

0:24:510:24:53

which makes me really nervous, cos of course, as you know,

0:24:530:24:55

furniture does take a bit of time to make, doesn't it?

0:24:550:24:58

-Absolutely.

-And so we need to kind of make it.

0:24:580:25:01

At the moment, I have no furniture to put in that room.

0:25:010:25:05

-Well, we'll see what we can do.

-That would be amazing.

0:25:050:25:08

So how long do you think you could spare to help us?

0:25:080:25:14

-Till Sunday night.

-Really?

-No problem.

0:25:140:25:16

-Where did you come from like this?

-From Heaven!

-It's amazing!

0:25:180:25:22

'We still need a bit of divine intervention.'

0:25:220:25:25

How far are we behind?

0:25:250:25:26

I reckon we're two days behind actually.

0:25:260:25:28

How can we be when we're two days into the job?

0:25:300:25:32

We're not wired, we're not plumbed and we're not plasterboarded.

0:25:320:25:35

That's where we should have been in two days.

0:25:350:25:37

We've created more mess than we were supposed to.

0:25:370:25:40

-We weren't supposed to take this roof off.

-Look at it!

0:25:400:25:42

We weren't supposed to drop this floor,

0:25:420:25:44

we weren't supposed to take a chimney stack out all through the house.

0:25:440:25:48

If you go downstairs, at the top of the stairs there's nothing here.

0:25:480:25:51

And we haven't got a staircase.

0:25:510:25:53

Or internal walls, cos we took them out as well.

0:25:530:25:55

And we took the internal walls out!

0:25:550:25:58

So we've sort of gone back, back, back,

0:25:580:26:00

but now we're starting to move forward.

0:26:000:26:03

-Tomorrow's a positive day.

-Not today?

-No.

0:26:030:26:06

'Welcome to the positive day.

0:26:100:26:12

'This area is so important for Rebecca and Steve,

0:26:120:26:15

'the school opposite is still a key part of their life.

0:26:150:26:18

'It's where Rebecca takes the triplets for nursery.

0:26:180:26:20

'At times these weekly get-togethers have been the only

0:26:220:26:25

'opportunity for Rebecca to escape the confines of her home.

0:26:250:26:29

'Quite simply, they're a lifeline.'

0:26:290:26:31

She did lack confidence when she very first came to the centre.

0:26:330:26:37

'Michelle manages the nursery sessions.

0:26:380:26:40

'She's worked closely with Rebecca since the triplets were born.'

0:26:400:26:43

It took quite a few months to get her out

0:26:430:26:46

and build up the relationship, checking that she was OK,

0:26:460:26:49

and that she wasn't going under cos Steven was working away.

0:26:490:26:53

We would, generally, I would give her a phone call,

0:26:530:26:56

check she was all right, or...

0:26:560:26:58

Just cos we were over the road as well,

0:26:580:27:00

pop over and make sure that she's fine.

0:27:000:27:02

'The mums Rebecca's met here help each other through difficult times.'

0:27:020:27:06

I do put on a brave face a lot of the time, Dawn can see through that

0:27:060:27:10

when I'm not OK.

0:27:100:27:12

I say I'm OK but I'm not OK.

0:27:120:27:13

I ring you up sometimes, you come down and watch the children

0:27:150:27:18

for an hour, I go back to bed for an hour and stuff like that.

0:27:180:27:20

If I didn't have the support I get from my friends and family,

0:27:200:27:24

I would not be able to do it.

0:27:240:27:26

'Fixing the house won't solve all Rebecca's problems

0:27:280:27:31

'but it will give the triplets a safer, happier future.

0:27:310:27:34

'So, we'd better get on with it.'

0:27:340:27:36

'Now, Gabby hasn't made it into the loft yet.

0:27:410:27:43

'That's because it's not just the changing plans

0:27:430:27:46

'that have got our Gabby rattled.'

0:27:460:27:48

-I'm trying not to show fear but I'm not keen on the ladders.

-Are you not?

0:27:480:27:52

We haven't got any other way of getting into the loft

0:27:520:27:55

and we need to talk about the loft space.

0:27:550:27:57

I know, I'm going to do it, it's fine, but I am, yep, it's fine.

0:27:570:28:00

You go up, I'll go up behind you, and if you fall you fall on me,

0:28:000:28:02

I'll catch you. How's that?

0:28:020:28:05

Is it attached to stuff? It doesn't feel like it's attached.

0:28:090:28:12

It's fully secure and attached.

0:28:120:28:14

'We're not being cruel, this is the only way up.

0:28:140:28:17

'There's no stairs inside.'

0:28:170:28:19

Hold onto that.

0:28:190:28:20

SHE SIGHS

0:28:200:28:22

How did you get up?

0:28:270:28:29

The ladder. On the ladder.

0:28:290:28:32

She can't, she's having difficulty speaking at the moment.

0:28:320:28:35

She wasn't very keen on the idea of the climb but has made it anyway

0:28:350:28:38

because I said either she came up

0:28:380:28:39

-or we decided where the walls go.

-Oh, right.

0:28:390:28:42

'We need to decide the shape this room has to be, and guess what?

0:28:420:28:45

'Gabby and I disagree on where to put the new wall.'

0:28:450:28:48

-We have to fill this in, do we?

-No.

0:28:480:28:51

We've taken away an attic. They need some area for storage.

0:28:510:28:56

'What is it with designers?'

0:28:560:28:58

I would keep this shape

0:28:580:29:00

and all the various shapes, we've got a chimney and all that too.

0:29:000:29:03

Designers like to box everything out

0:29:030:29:06

and make them all square and lose all the interest.

0:29:060:29:09

Look at all our buildings these days, they're all squares,

0:29:090:29:11

they're all blocks, they're uninteresting.

0:29:110:29:13

Look at buildings built from the Georgian time or Edwardian or

0:29:130:29:16

Victorian, look up and see the glory of the top of the buildings.

0:29:160:29:20

Here, they're just flat blocks of glass and metal.

0:29:200:29:22

That's what everybody's trying to do,

0:29:220:29:24

they're all trying to paint everything grey, and it's true.

0:29:240:29:28

All the houses that are built now, they're all like boxes.

0:29:280:29:31

Square, boring boxes, ain't they? Where's the architectural interest?

0:29:310:29:35

Where are they putting our skills to the test in creating shapes?

0:29:350:29:38

-Nothing.

-Oh, God, it's like Henry V!

0:29:380:29:41

You need to have walls that are flat to put furniture into rooms,

0:29:410:29:46

and this is a room that needs some furniture in it

0:29:460:29:49

otherwise it's not going to work.

0:29:490:29:51

'Actually she makes a very good point.

0:29:510:29:53

'But while we're talking about putting new walls up,

0:29:530:29:55

'the old ones haven't finished with us yet.'

0:29:550:29:58

Everything you touch, look, it just falls to pieces.

0:29:580:30:04

That's what we're up against.

0:30:040:30:05

It's Day Three now, and predominately, on Day Three,

0:30:050:30:09

we're putting it back together again.

0:30:090:30:10

And all we're doing on this one, look...

0:30:100:30:13

We're just going backwards.

0:30:130:30:15

Hopefully tomorrow we've got an army of plasterers coming in,

0:30:150:30:19

and what I want to do is spend the whole day plasterboarding,

0:30:190:30:23

and then on Day Five, we'll be plastering.

0:30:230:30:28

That's...and I'm hoping they're all up for it and very nice plasterers,

0:30:280:30:32

which I'm sure they are, and we can, erm, we can spin this one around.

0:30:320:30:37

That's what we need.

0:30:370:30:39

Yeah. A positive army of plasterers.

0:30:390:30:42

Yeah, you said it would get better yesterday.

0:30:440:30:46

See any plasterers, anyone?

0:30:460:30:48

# Hallelujah... #

0:30:480:30:49

Oh, there's one! And another...

0:30:490:30:52

And, oh, look! A trowel of them.

0:30:520:30:54

I made that up, actually, it's not really a trowel.

0:30:540:30:57

We can split some of your guys, say,

0:30:570:30:59

"Right, you have that ceiling, you have that ceiling,

0:30:590:31:01

"and them walls, board it, patch it, turn round and skim it."

0:31:010:31:04

And we can start spreading people out over this house.

0:31:040:31:07

What a sight!

0:31:070:31:08

More local boys rescuing a family in need.

0:31:080:31:10

About time, too. We're nearly halfway through,

0:31:100:31:12

and no way are we halfway through the work

0:31:120:31:15

Gentlemen, gentlemen, gentlemen!

0:31:150:31:17

Thank you!

0:31:170:31:19

Look, they're all grabbing the glory here, eh?

0:31:190:31:21

No - collectively,

0:31:210:31:22

it's starting to look a bit like a house again, innit?

0:31:220:31:25

We're getting there.

0:31:250:31:27

Bit of plasterboard on the ceiling, bit of patching on the walls

0:31:270:31:29

and it's halfway there, innit?

0:31:290:31:32

Definitely halfway there.

0:31:320:31:33

They say an army marches on its stomach.

0:31:350:31:38

Some more than others.

0:31:380:31:40

-What?

-I told you I'd get some wages.

-Yeah.

0:31:400:31:42

-You having a bit of salad?

-Yeah.

0:31:420:31:44

Bit of salad with me chips.

0:31:450:31:47

Speaking of large appetites,

0:31:470:31:49

Jules' girth has followers far and wide.

0:31:490:31:52

Get it? Wide.

0:31:520:31:54

I've always wanted to know if that's a real belly.

0:31:540:31:58

Hmm.

0:31:590:32:01

I thought you were pregnant.

0:32:010:32:02

That's a lot less than what it used to be.

0:32:020:32:04

Yeah, but look inside there.

0:32:040:32:06

Don't - yeah, you'll find the fluff, if you look inside.

0:32:060:32:08

-There's lots of fluff in there.

-There is, isn't there?

0:32:080:32:10

-Mm, yeah.

-But it's good, though, innit?

0:32:100:32:12

-It's a real man's belly, that, mate.

-Real man's belly.

0:32:120:32:15

Like mine.

0:32:160:32:17

-Yeah, see, that's not hairy enough.

-Mine's a baby belly.

0:32:170:32:20

-Yeah, thanks for that.

-You're all right.

0:32:200:32:22

-Are you happy now, are you?

-I'm very happy.

0:32:220:32:25

I don't know about anyone else,

0:32:250:32:27

I found that all very disturbing.

0:32:270:32:29

We're here because of yet another family member -

0:32:350:32:38

it was Rebecca's mother-in-law Lorraine who wrote in to us.

0:32:380:32:41

She too lives locally, and was worried her family were going under.

0:32:410:32:45

Rebecca would deny it, but I know that it's depressing Becky.

0:32:460:32:50

Because of the comments she makes.

0:32:510:32:52

"Ooh, I can't get my bloody kitchen done,

0:32:520:32:54

"I'm never going to get anything done."

0:32:540:32:56

And she won't - she probably won't,

0:32:570:32:59

until they've all left home and got married.

0:32:590:33:01

People might just say, "Oh, triplets," you know?

0:33:010:33:03

"I've had three children." But not all at once, you haven't.

0:33:030:33:06

It's so much harder.

0:33:060:33:08

It's hard.

0:33:080:33:09

I've tried to get all three asleep on my own...

0:33:090:33:12

It's impossible.

0:33:120:33:13

But if we change the house round and get it completely done up,

0:33:130:33:16

there are still three children to look after,

0:33:160:33:18

and still her, predominantly, to do it.

0:33:180:33:20

But it will be... I think, instead of walking into to mouldy old kitchen,

0:33:200:33:25

she'll walk in and think, "Oh, this is a nice place to be."

0:33:250:33:29

And I think...

0:33:290:33:30

I think, if Mum's happier, the kids will feel that as well.

0:33:300:33:34

What do you make of the fact that you sent us a letter

0:33:340:33:36

and now there are between 30 and 60 people crawling all over the house?

0:33:360:33:39

-All volunteers.

-I think that's why I've had to drive past,

0:33:390:33:42

just to prove that it's actually happening.

0:33:420:33:46

When I got the phone call back, I thought, "Ooh, that was quick!"

0:33:460:33:50

And then, you know, she was saying, "Don't get your hopes up,"

0:33:510:33:54

and I thought, "Oh, well, at least they're semi-interested."

0:33:540:33:58

And as time's gone on, I've thought, "It's getting a bit closer, this."

0:33:580:34:01

And then Becky rang and said, "They're starting it,

0:34:010:34:05

"we've got to move out," I thought, "Oh, my God, it's real."

0:34:050:34:09

It is very real.

0:34:090:34:11

Stairs!

0:34:110:34:12

But maybe our luck is starting to change.

0:34:120:34:15

Stairs!

0:34:150:34:17

What's arrived? What's arrived?

0:34:170:34:19

That means everything's sort of in the house, now.

0:34:190:34:22

Well, if they fit.

0:34:220:34:23

That means the house is actually starting to work as a house again.

0:34:240:34:27

-Are you all right?

-Flipping 'eck, you turned it round for us!

0:34:290:34:32

-Turned it round!

-Top man.

0:34:320:34:33

-How's things?

-All right, yeah.

0:34:330:34:35

-Confident?

-Confident, yeah.

0:34:350:34:37

-You should be.

-We're always confident.

0:34:370:34:39

Yet another last minute hero. This house is full of them.

0:34:420:34:46

"To you, to me..."

0:34:480:34:49

Now, I may be tempting fate, but with four days to go

0:34:510:34:54

it seems Rebecca and Steve will get their own room after all.

0:34:540:34:57

That looks suspiciously like a loft to me,

0:34:570:35:00

and Mark is looking a bit more relaxed.

0:35:000:35:03

This last little hole, here - when that closes off,

0:35:030:35:05

that's the roof closed in,

0:35:050:35:06

then the roofers can come in and start roofing the whole thing,

0:35:060:35:09

and we can start making the building watertight again.

0:35:090:35:12

And I'm sort of starting to feel

0:35:120:35:13

that we're moving forward a little bit.

0:35:130:35:15

Which is nice.

0:35:150:35:17

And then two steps back.

0:35:170:35:19

That was Bill, the voice of doom as usual.

0:35:190:35:21

The roofing team have been waiting day after day.

0:35:230:35:26

Now we can unleash them, gazelle like.

0:35:260:35:29

So, you actually get up on the roof and do a bit, do you?

0:35:290:35:31

Because you're really not...

0:35:310:35:33

Without being rude,

0:35:330:35:34

you're not really the size for a natural born roofer, are you?

0:35:340:35:37

-I am! From here.

-Yeah!

0:35:370:35:40

I must admit, I struggle when I roof - it's legs and that,

0:35:400:35:43

I just can't do it, man.

0:35:430:35:45

-I can set them up and leave them to it.

-Yeah.

0:35:450:35:47

Wind them up and let them go.

0:35:470:35:48

At last, we are catching up.

0:35:480:35:51

But we're so behind we're having to cram everyone in at the same time.

0:35:510:35:55

It's such a tiny house we're overflowing into the street.

0:35:550:35:58

What's making it manic? It's just the sheer volume of people.

0:35:580:36:03

We've co-opted the school for space.

0:36:050:36:07

It's fantastic, what's being done over there. It's just unreal.

0:36:070:36:10

You know, there's so many people working - for nothing.

0:36:100:36:14

And they're still doing a good job, they're not trying to cut corners.

0:36:140:36:17

-You know? It's all good.

-Are you enjoying it?

0:36:170:36:19

Loving every minute of it.

0:36:190:36:21

Normally when you work on a site,

0:36:240:36:25

you're getting in everyone's way and everyone's angry -

0:36:250:36:28

everyone in there, is just having a laugh

0:36:280:36:29

-and getting on with it.

-Why is that?

0:36:290:36:31

It's because everyone's - I personally think it's because...

0:36:310:36:34

You know how you get people paid different wages and stuff like that?

0:36:340:36:37

Everyone's doing it for free, everyone's in the same boat.

0:36:370:36:40

We're all jumping in. I was sanding banisters today - I'm a plumber.

0:36:400:36:44

But now I'm doing flat-packing.

0:36:440:36:46

-It's been so frustrating...

-Frustrating!

0:36:460:36:49

Very frustrating, because every room I've had to redesign

0:36:490:36:53

while we're here.

0:36:530:36:54

-Everything we've had to do, we've had to redo.

-Yeah.

0:36:540:36:56

You know? We went to put a wall up, the wall wasn't strong enough.

0:36:560:36:58

We had to take another wall out to put a wall in.

0:36:580:37:00

We put another wall in there, removed a wall and put another one in.

0:37:000:37:03

Took that out and put another one across

0:37:030:37:05

to make the whole thing stronger.

0:37:050:37:06

We had to put the roof up, take the roof down again,

0:37:060:37:09

put loads of noggings in there to make the roof even stronger.

0:37:090:37:12

It wasn't strong enough, so we took it out and redid it.

0:37:120:37:14

Building Control came and said they wanted more in it,

0:37:140:37:16

so we retrimmed all that.

0:37:160:37:18

That was the roof, so we came down the stairs and put another wall in.

0:37:180:37:21

This was going to be a little one,

0:37:210:37:22

this was going to be manageable, wasn't it?

0:37:220:37:24

-I know.

-We were quite excited about this one.

0:37:240:37:26

I was really excited about this one, but I got it wrong.

0:37:260:37:29

Yeah, but nothing can stop us now - unless it rains a lot.

0:37:290:37:32

People say it's all about money and all the rest of it,

0:37:340:37:37

end of t'day, there are families out there who are unfortunate.

0:37:370:37:41

But for us to give a couple of days of our time,

0:37:410:37:44

sometimes it's better to give back than it is to receive.

0:37:440:37:48

I take my hat off to yous.

0:37:480:37:50

But I'd better put it on very quickly,

0:37:500:37:52

-cos health and safety are around.

-Yep!

0:37:520:37:54

We've got the bit between our teeth now,

0:37:550:37:57

the weather's not going to stop us, the insulation's going in,

0:37:570:38:00

the garden's getting sorted and the kitchen's being fitted.

0:38:000:38:02

So, what made you give up your Sunday for us?

0:38:040:38:07

I got a call. Last minute, got a call off the kitchen company.

0:38:070:38:10

Basically I heard about the plight of the family here,

0:38:100:38:13

so I thought I'd come and help out.

0:38:130:38:15

-Got a free weekend, why not?

-Brilliant. great stuff.

0:38:150:38:18

-So you didn't go to church today, then?

-No, no.

0:38:180:38:20

-Temple was closed, as well.

-Oh, was it?!

0:38:200:38:23

Yes, no wonder Billy was rejected by the diplomatic service.

0:38:230:38:26

But the mood on site is changing.

0:38:260:38:29

HARMONICA PLAYS

0:38:290:38:30

THEY CHEER

0:38:380:38:41

Didn't realise you were so talented!

0:38:430:38:45

-Oh, yeah.

-Well done!

0:38:450:38:47

He went in for another belly rub, then, didn't he?

0:38:490:38:52

He's not the only one with hidden talents.

0:38:520:38:54

-Plainly, you're wasted as a builder.

-Yeah, I know.

0:38:550:38:58

I reckon there's a bit of an opening

0:38:580:39:00

when Rolf's door closes, Jules' opens.

0:39:000:39:05

Yeah, don't hold your breathe, though, Jules.

0:39:050:39:08

At last something's going right for Gabi.

0:39:080:39:10

-Whoa, look at that!

-Oh, look at the triplet bench, that's amazing!

0:39:100:39:13

Ahh.

0:39:130:39:14

What was that made from, then?

0:39:140:39:16

-Reclaim something?

-No, no, this is all new oak, so...

0:39:160:39:19

-But you can see this line here, through the grain...

-Yeah.

0:39:190:39:24

It's through there, as well. It's all made out of one board.

0:39:240:39:28

So, one plank's made all this.

0:39:280:39:30

Bespoke furniture - how do they all get involved?

0:39:300:39:33

-Persuaded him. Roped him into it.

-Yeah!

0:39:330:39:36

I knew about this one evening in the pub, basically.

0:39:360:39:39

He said to me, "Oh, I've applied to build this cabinet for DIY SOS,"

0:39:390:39:42

and I said, "Yeah, why not?

0:39:420:39:44

"I'll come out with you, Andy, it's a good day out. It's a good day out."

0:39:440:39:48

It IS a good day out - they've come from Norwich!

0:39:480:39:51

It shows people like us in a good light, rather than cowboys...

0:39:510:39:54

-Yeah.

-It's just refreshing to see.

0:39:540:39:57

And very nice to hear.

0:39:570:39:58

What an incredible bunch we have here.

0:39:580:40:01

I wasn't actually supposed to be here until Saturday, Sunday and Monday,

0:40:010:40:05

-but I seem to have been here...

-All the way.

0:40:050:40:08

-You get addicted to it, a bit.

-Really?

0:40:080:40:10

-Yeah.

-What is it that's addictive, then? Cos it is a lot of hard work.

0:40:100:40:14

You start it, you want to see it through to the finish.

0:40:140:40:17

"Finish" is a lovely word,

0:40:170:40:18

but it's not something we're going to encounter soon.

0:40:180:40:21

We've only got a couple of days left.

0:40:210:40:23

That's Steve's dad Terry.

0:40:230:40:24

Rebecca and Steve rely heavily on their family.

0:40:240:40:27

Great-grandmas and everybody, sisters, brothers, you know,

0:40:270:40:30

-everybody.

-Yeah.

-Everyone mucks in.

0:40:300:40:32

But she's still left with them on her own.

0:40:320:40:34

It's very hard work.

0:40:340:40:35

A day and a half to go - would you say that this building

0:40:350:40:38

is a day and a half away from being ready?

0:40:380:40:40

No, I wouldn't.

0:40:400:40:42

But the way you work, and the way it's organised and everything,

0:40:420:40:45

I can see you'll be there or thereabouts.

0:40:450:40:47

-It'll be close.

-Yeah.

-It'll be touch and go.

-Yeah.

0:40:470:40:49

It's not like we're making it up, pretending that it's touch and go,

0:40:490:40:52

it actually really is on this one.

0:40:520:40:54

-We lost a day on the first day.

-I know. It's awesome.

0:40:540:40:57

It's absolutely awesome. It is.

0:40:570:40:58

And, of course, he's not the only parent on site.

0:40:580:41:02

-Have you got kids?

-I have. I've got one, yeah.

0:41:020:41:03

Could you imagine having three babies all at the same time

0:41:030:41:06

-to look after?

-No.

0:41:060:41:08

It'd terrify me!

0:41:080:41:09

And so we go into the last day.

0:41:120:41:14

Traditionally this is the point at which our Gabi gets stressed,

0:41:140:41:17

and she's had to think on her size 8 feet on this one - a lot.

0:41:170:41:21

So I should make sure she stays calm, really, shouldn't I?

0:41:210:41:23

-We'll get there.

-I know, but it's... Oh!

0:41:230:41:26

It will take years off of your life

0:41:260:41:27

-each time you do one of these...

-I know.

0:41:270:41:29

-But that's not important right now.

-I'm only 17.

0:41:290:41:31

And look what's happened.

0:41:310:41:33

Stone.

0:41:330:41:35

Ow!

0:41:350:41:36

Ow! Ow!

0:41:360:41:38

So rude!

0:41:380:41:39

A mean, plainly you're not 17 stone.

0:41:410:41:43

You're a good - what? Stone off of that? I'd have thought...

0:41:430:41:45

Stone and a half? Two stone.

0:41:450:41:47

Four stone. You must be about six stone off of that.

0:41:470:41:50

At least nine stone.

0:41:500:41:51

That's probably double your weight, isn't it?

0:41:510:41:54

That's probably at least... Help.

0:41:540:41:57

Me and my big mouth.

0:41:570:41:58

When you think how much time we lost at the start of the build,

0:41:580:42:02

it's nothing short of a miracle what these trades are pulling off.

0:42:020:42:05

Usually, I would say that's on the outside.

0:42:050:42:07

Do you know which side's the front and the back?

0:42:070:42:10

That's to go on there and that's to go on there.

0:42:100:42:13

There's so little time left, but no-one's cutting any corners.

0:42:130:42:17

Luckily, the lawn's quick to lay.

0:42:180:42:21

The triplets will have a field day on this.

0:42:210:42:23

It's like having a garden without all the work.

0:42:230:42:25

And what happens when it rains?

0:42:250:42:27

Filters straight through the membrane, through the base,

0:42:270:42:30

just filters into the ground, away.

0:42:300:42:33

All we need now is a front door.

0:42:330:42:35

That's good! This one has a secret.

0:42:350:42:36

It's remote controlled. No, really.

0:42:360:42:39

DOOR BEEPS Just like with your car.

0:42:390:42:41

That's it open...

0:42:410:42:42

-And I'm in.

-Cor, that's going to be handy -

0:42:420:42:44

when you're trying to keep three kids going and everything,

0:42:440:42:47

just to be able to blip it and then get the kids up and...

0:42:470:42:49

To get in...

0:42:490:42:51

..and open it.

0:42:520:42:53

And we're in.

0:42:540:42:56

MUFFLED RECORDED VOICE Equally...

0:42:560:42:58

What's the - what's the voice on it?

0:42:580:43:00

She's telling you if the door's locked or unlocked.

0:43:000:43:02

-BILLY:

-"It is unlocked."

0:43:020:43:04

THEY LAUGH

0:43:040:43:07

We're trying to hear the door.

0:43:070:43:10

I was being the door.

0:43:100:43:11

I was being a ventriloquist - a door ventriloquist.

0:43:110:43:14

Do you think I'll make a future out of that?

0:43:140:43:16

You sound like someone off of an instant potato advert.

0:43:160:43:19

Oh, that was good. That was good.

0:43:190:43:22

"And they eat them with their knives!"

0:43:220:43:24

I liked that one.

0:43:240:43:25

That was one of my favourites.

0:43:250:43:27

Honestly, it's like walking into the Twilight Zone,

0:43:270:43:29

having a conversation with him. Now, if you wouldn't mind keeping quiet,

0:43:290:43:32

we want to hear the thing.

0:43:320:43:33

Nice and quiet, everybody. Get the microphone in nice and close.

0:43:330:43:37

RECORDING: Lock closed.

0:43:370:43:39

Six days ago, this house was as good as derelict.

0:43:400:43:43

There was no roof on it, there were no internal walls upstairs,

0:43:430:43:46

and it was covered in muck.

0:43:460:43:48

Now, with only four hours to go -

0:43:480:43:50

well, we only need the finishing touches. So...

0:43:500:43:52

we've got half a chance of finishing.

0:43:520:43:54

When we arrived, we found a house that was suffocating Rebecca, Steve

0:43:570:44:00

and their instant family.

0:44:000:44:03

It's horrible.

0:44:030:44:04

How she manages to keep a brave face on and just get on with it -

0:44:040:44:08

it's amazing.

0:44:080:44:09

But it was still home.

0:44:090:44:11

Why is the house such a big deal?

0:44:110:44:12

-What is it about it that you don't want to leave?

-Well, obviously

0:44:120:44:15

because I grew up there, it's got a lot of memories for me,

0:44:150:44:17

and Steven grew up in the street behind,

0:44:170:44:19

and we both went to the school across the road at the same time,

0:44:190:44:22

and I want me children to attend that school.

0:44:220:44:24

The whole family has been involved.

0:44:240:44:26

I don't think that she believes

0:44:260:44:28

that it's going to be what it's going to be.

0:44:280:44:30

We've had to convince her a lot, you know?

0:44:300:44:33

"It'll be this, Becky."

0:44:330:44:34

"Oh, no, they won't do that. Oh, no, they won't do this."

0:44:340:44:37

I said, "You wait and see it."

0:44:370:44:38

She's watched the programme on television, so she knows.

0:44:380:44:41

But I just don't think that she thinks

0:44:410:44:44

that she'd ever get anything like that.

0:44:440:44:46

A lot of us are like that,

0:44:460:44:47

"Ah, well, they've got it - it'll never happen to me." You know?

0:44:470:44:51

-So...

-You looking forward to seeing it yourself?

0:44:510:44:54

I can't wait.

0:44:540:44:56

Three must be their lucky number,

0:44:560:44:58

because now it's the home they've always dreamt of.

0:44:580:45:01

We've taken the unloved shell of a back room

0:45:050:45:07

and turned it into a spacious kitchen diner

0:45:070:45:10

where Rebecca can cook and play, with Grace, Archie and Isabelle

0:45:100:45:14

to their hearts' content.

0:45:140:45:17

The old kitchen's been knocked down,

0:45:170:45:19

replaced by this warm, insulated utility room.

0:45:190:45:23

There's new flooring throughout.

0:45:230:45:25

With the house now child-friendly,

0:45:270:45:29

the front room is no longer a padded cell.

0:45:290:45:32

It's a grown-up room

0:45:320:45:33

with the electronics raised away from prying hands.

0:45:330:45:37

Upstairs the bathroom's had a complete facelift.

0:45:380:45:43

We've added a new room, the loft clad in beautiful local slate.

0:45:430:45:47

And what a room!

0:45:490:45:50

The calm, indulgent space for Steve and Rebecca to call their own.

0:45:500:45:54

There's a dressing table and the bed has a handcrafted headboard.

0:45:540:45:58

The whole house has been rewired and the attention to detail that

0:46:000:46:04

we've come to know and love from Gabriel is on show.

0:46:040:46:08

With Rebecca and Steve upstairs,

0:46:080:46:10

there's now space for Archie to have his own room for the first

0:46:100:46:14

time ever, with space to play and to grow.

0:46:140:46:17

Grace and Isabelle move into the front room,

0:46:170:46:19

wherever wallpaper with a bird motif, sumptuous blinds

0:46:190:46:23

and bright colours provide a very girly space.

0:46:230:46:26

There's even somewhere for them to have tea.

0:46:260:46:28

With new windows throughout, insulation

0:46:290:46:31

and central heating, this house will be warm and cosy,

0:46:310:46:34

and that's just the inside. Outside...

0:46:340:46:37

..the garden has been transformed.

0:46:380:46:40

The all-year round lawn provides that vital playing

0:46:400:46:43

area for Archie and his sisters.

0:46:430:46:46

There's raised beds with lighting and their very own sandpit.

0:46:460:46:50

With a talking door to cap it all off, the house where Rebecca

0:46:510:46:55

grew up can continue as her family home for another generation.

0:46:550:47:00

Will they even recognise it?

0:47:000:47:02

Three, two, one, open your eyes.

0:47:040:47:06

-Oh, my God.

-Wow.

0:47:070:47:10

-HE LAUGHS Oh, it's gorgeous.

-Oh, my God.

0:47:100:47:12

HE LAUGHS

0:47:150:47:17

Oh, look at the kids on the wall.

0:47:170:47:19

-Oh...

-SHE SOBS

0:47:210:47:25

It's amazing, isn't it?

0:47:270:47:29

I never thought it would be like this.

0:47:290:47:32

God.

0:47:330:47:35

The key thing about it was to give you a beautiful kitchen to work in,

0:47:350:47:38

which you haven't had before.

0:47:380:47:39

Somewhere to prepare all the bottles that you need to prepare.

0:47:390:47:42

The workspace to be able to cook and play together.

0:47:420:47:46

Nice oven, nice hob, all the usual things.

0:47:460:47:48

And you might want to pull that little handle there.

0:47:480:47:50

Wow! HE LAUGHS

0:47:530:47:56

Yay!

0:47:560:47:57

Why's it such a big deal to you, this kitchen?

0:48:010:48:03

Cos this is where I spend all the time with the kids,

0:48:030:48:06

and look at all the room they've got to watch me cook.

0:48:060:48:08

SHE SIGHS

0:48:080:48:10

Prepare paints or...whatever I need to do for them.

0:48:100:48:14

Oh, look.

0:48:150:48:17

Oh, it's... Oh, wow. This is something else.

0:48:170:48:20

This is a handmade piece, in oak,

0:48:200:48:21

specifically for you and the children,

0:48:210:48:23

with the names carved in the back. It's a triplet chair.

0:48:230:48:26

BOTH LAUGH Going to feel so grown up.

0:48:260:48:29

Is it the space you need for you and the kids?

0:48:310:48:33

Definitely, yeah. It's brilliant.

0:48:330:48:34

-I can't believe this is the same back room.

-And you don't...?

0:48:340:48:37

The fire used to be here.

0:48:370:48:39

-There's a chimney rest there.

-Very good. So you've noticed.

0:48:390:48:43

There's a basic little cupboard. It's worth having a look.

0:48:430:48:46

-Go and open that door.

-There?

-Yeah.

0:48:460:48:48

Oh, my God.

0:48:490:48:52

Oh, look at the wellies!

0:48:520:48:55

God. Look at it.

0:48:580:49:00

It's amazing, isn't it?

0:49:010:49:03

Eh?

0:49:030:49:05

I don't believe it. I really don't.

0:49:050:49:07

-We used to live in here.

-Toilet down here for the potty training.

0:49:070:49:11

So, basically, you have a little place

0:49:120:49:14

to put all their boots and coats. This is all thermally insulated.

0:49:140:49:17

You've got new windows, I don't know if you noticed.

0:49:170:49:19

You'll notice that as you go round the house - there's new windows everywhere.

0:49:190:49:22

Things are getting on top of me with the kids and I'm having a bad day,

0:49:230:49:27

I can just put my washing in here, shut the door,

0:49:270:49:29

and then carry on playing with them in there without having to look at it all.

0:49:290:49:32

It piling up in the kitchen or them pulling it out everywhere.

0:49:320:49:35

-Marks out of ten so far.

-15 million!

0:49:380:49:41

You can imagine, doing all this work, it's been fairly busy,

0:49:410:49:44

so there's only so much we can do around the rest.

0:49:440:49:48

Do you want to come and see the front room?

0:49:480:49:51

Just turn that handle.

0:49:510:49:52

-Oh!

-Oh, look.

-Oh, wow.

0:49:540:49:58

It's beautiful, isn't it? Look at the pictures.

0:49:590:50:03

Wow! Look at the blinds.

0:50:030:50:06

That's fantastic.

0:50:060:50:07

This is a handmade cabinet, specifically for you.

0:50:070:50:10

It's made to take your TV, the size that it is.

0:50:100:50:13

Make sure... You can put child locks on the inside of here.

0:50:130:50:16

All the things that you need, electronics wise,

0:50:160:50:18

are up and away from the kids,

0:50:180:50:20

-where they can't put sandwiches in the disc slots.

-Yeah.

0:50:200:50:23

He's found spoons in the DVD player. He's gone mad.

0:50:230:50:26

-It feels strange, doesn't it?

-It's brilliant.

0:50:300:50:34

Here we are then.

0:50:350:50:37

THEY LAUGH

0:50:370:50:39

I wondered where the old loft hatch was, but I didn't expect to...this.

0:50:390:50:43

Yeah. We've changed things around a little bit.

0:50:430:50:45

-Oh, my God.

-Oh, my God.

0:50:450:50:47

So the question is - where shall we start?

0:50:480:50:50

-Cos there's a whole load of doors to go through.

-This one.

0:50:500:50:53

-You want to start with that one?

-Yeah.

0:50:530:50:55

-Cos it's the nearest one!

-OK. Turn around.

0:50:550:50:58

What is this?

0:50:590:51:01

SHE GASPS

0:51:010:51:03

Oh, my God.

0:51:070:51:09

-It's beautiful, isn't it?

-It's gorgeous. Look.

0:51:110:51:14

-I can't believe this is our bathroom.

-I know.

0:51:140:51:17

Before, you used to burn your legs on the radiator

0:51:200:51:22

because it was right in the way of the toilet.

0:51:220:51:24

We had to worry about the children burning themselves.

0:51:240:51:26

-So whose room is this?

-It's Archie's.

-Is it Archie's room?

0:51:320:51:35

-Oh, yeah.

-This is Archie's room.

-Oh, look.

0:51:350:51:39

Oh, look.

0:51:400:51:42

I can't believe he's got his own room.

0:51:420:51:44

-He's going to love it, isn't he?

-Oh, his digger.

0:51:440:51:47

Oh, look at it.

0:51:470:51:48

SOBBING: Oh...

0:51:480:51:50

I love it.

0:51:520:51:54

-Oh, look at his bed.

-I know.

0:51:580:52:00

-Archie's little cage.

-ALL LAUGH

0:52:000:52:04

What's nice...

0:52:040:52:06

He gets a bit pushed around by the girls, doesn't he?

0:52:060:52:08

So he has his own little escape space.

0:52:080:52:11

-So how is it? Archie's little room?

-Amazing.

-Brilliant.

0:52:150:52:18

I can just imagine him here, playing with his trucks.

0:52:180:52:21

With his little trucks and everything.

0:52:210:52:23

-All right for a boys room then, Steve?

-Yeah, brilliant.

0:52:230:52:25

-Absolutely amazing.

-Fantastic.

-Isn't it?

-I can't believe it.

0:52:250:52:28

What do you think about the people who have been working on it?

0:52:290:52:32

I just can't... Words can't describe how grateful we are.

0:52:320:52:36

Just completely overwhelmed.

0:52:360:52:39

It's beautiful, isn't it?

0:52:400:52:42

It's fantastic. I can't believe it.

0:52:420:52:44

For once, I really have got nothing I can put into words.

0:52:440:52:46

-I'm speechless.

-It's amazing, isn't it?

0:52:460:52:48

There's... No amount of words can ever say out gratitude.

0:52:480:52:53

Well, it's all very well Archie having a room,

0:52:530:52:55

but, of course, the girls need a room too.

0:52:550:52:57

-Ready to see the next one?

-Yeah.

-Yes.

0:52:570:53:00

So this is Grace and Isabelle.

0:53:020:53:04

SHE LAUGHS

0:53:040:53:08

-It's lovely, isn't it?

-Look at the little tea kettle.

0:53:080:53:13

Oh, it's so girly.

0:53:130:53:15

-It's lovely, isn't it?

-All the birds on the wall.

0:53:150:53:18

They're going to absolutely love this.

0:53:180:53:20

We've got somewhere for Archie and we've got somewhere for the girls,

0:53:270:53:29

but that means we're kind of short of a bedroom, aren't we?

0:53:290:53:32

The shed. THEY LAUGH

0:53:320:53:34

-In the utility room.

-I think we can probably do a little bit better than that.

0:53:350:53:39

And if you turn the corner...

0:53:430:53:46

There's a set of stairs. Oh, my God.

0:53:460:53:48

So what's at the top of the stairs?

0:53:500:53:53

Oh...

0:53:550:53:56

Oh, my God!

0:53:560:53:57

Oh, my God!

0:53:570:53:59

SHE LAUGHS Oh, it's beautiful.

0:53:590:54:04

Oh, it's... Oh, my God. Wow. This is...

0:54:040:54:08

-Look at the table and the mirror.

-Go and have a look.

0:54:080:54:11

You've got a dressing table.

0:54:130:54:15

I've always wanted a dressing table for the longest time.

0:54:150:54:17

Look at the bed.

0:54:210:54:24

-Look at the space in it.

-I know.

0:54:240:54:26

Could you imagine having so much space up in the roof?

0:54:260:54:28

I still can't believe this is...

0:54:280:54:30

I just can't believe this is our house.

0:54:310:54:33

This is my room. THEY LAUGH

0:54:350:54:38

Well, technically, both of your rooms.

0:54:380:54:41

No, this is just mine. He can sleep on the sofa.

0:54:410:54:43

Does it feel really weird or...?

0:54:450:54:47

Cos it was always home to you,

0:54:470:54:49

so to mess about with it would be kind of messing with your memories.

0:54:490:54:52

I thought that's how I would feel.

0:54:520:54:54

I thought it won't feel like my home any more,

0:54:540:54:56

but it feels like this is how it was always meant to be.

0:54:560:54:59

Shall we get the children and show them their rooms?

0:55:010:55:04

-Yeah. They're going to love it. Wow.

-Look.

-Look.

0:55:040:55:09

Oh, look.

0:55:120:55:14

SHE LAUGHS

0:55:160:55:17

Yay!

0:55:220:55:24

Patio doors leading out onto your new patio.

0:55:270:55:30

To your extension.

0:55:300:55:32

There's a perfectly safe environment for them to run around in.

0:55:320:55:34

This is what they should be able to do. Is it good?

0:55:340:55:37

Do you like it?

0:55:370:55:39

Wow. It's your sandpit. Look.

0:55:420:55:45

Just look at them now.

0:55:450:55:47

Their faces say it all.

0:55:470:55:49

THEY SHOUT

0:55:510:55:52

Amazed at what you have done. It's...

0:55:520:55:55

-It's humbling, isn't it?

-Yeah, it is. It is.

0:55:550:55:58

Some of the people that have done this are waiting out the front.

0:56:000:56:03

-Are you going to come out and say hello?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:56:030:56:05

And out you go.

0:56:080:56:11

APPLAUSE

0:56:110:56:14

These are the little ones that you've been making the house for.

0:56:190:56:22

As you can see, they're a bit of a handful.

0:56:220:56:23

They're desperately struggling to get away.

0:56:230:56:26

For the benefit of everybody here who hasn't had the chance to

0:56:260:56:29

chat to you all week, would you like to explain to them

0:56:290:56:31

what this change in the house,

0:56:310:56:33

from the moment you walked out to the moment you walked in, has been?

0:56:330:56:36

-It just means everything. So much.

-Yeah.

0:56:360:56:38

The kids have had nowhere to play.

0:56:380:56:40

They've just been stuck in one room.

0:56:400:56:43

Really, really can't thank you enough. Really can't.

0:56:430:56:46

I'm literally overwhelmed.

0:56:460:56:47

And people who know me...I'm speechless. I really am.

0:56:470:56:50

-LAUGHTER

-For once.

0:56:500:56:53

It just means so much to the kids.

0:56:530:56:55

What about all these people that are stood in front of you?

0:56:550:56:58

I can't believe what you've all done for us. It's amazing, isn't it?

0:56:580:57:01

-It's really amazing.

-SOBBING:

-Thank you so much, honestly.

0:57:010:57:05

APPLAUSE

0:57:050:57:08

Absolutely amazing, isn't it?

0:57:120:57:14

-No, thank you.

-Thank you all, yeah.

0:57:150:57:18

Yeah. Oh, thank you so much.

0:57:200:57:23

Thank you.

0:57:230:57:25

ALL TALK OVER EACH OTHER

0:57:250:57:28

Oh, it's gorgeous.

0:57:290:57:31

Do you like it, yeah? Good.

0:57:310:57:35

I was wondering this week, when did we become so cynical as a nation?

0:57:350:57:39

I heard someone saying,

0:57:390:57:40

"I don't mean to be cheesy, but it was a really nice thing they did."

0:57:400:57:43

Almost apologetically. We don't need to apologise for doing good things.

0:57:430:57:46

These people have done an amazing job here this week,

0:57:460:57:49

against all the odds, in order to give a young family a decent start,

0:57:490:57:54

a better opportunity.

0:57:540:57:55

Why is that something you should apologise for?

0:57:550:57:58

Maybe you know who somebody who needs your help.
