I miss our little chats. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:03
I miss her coming home or into a room, smiling, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
and I still expect her to come in one day | 0:00:06 | 0:00:09
and to be as she was. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
We're here to help mum Charlotte, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
who's fighting to recover from a life-shattering event... | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
It was horrific and then you're just sort of riding a storm. | 0:00:17 | 0:00:21
..to reunite a family forced to live apart. | 0:00:21 | 0:00:24
-Is there something you would love to give to the boys? -Yeah, together. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:29
All I want is for us to be that family unit | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
that we talked about before the stroke. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
We're building a home where they can be together, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
but it's going to take an army... | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
It's amazing. A lot of people doing a little can make a big difference. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
..and a lot of blood, sweat and tears. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
This is what puts the job over. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:47
Can you not see the amount of work that's got to be done? | 0:00:47 | 0:00:49
But it will be worth it. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
THEY GASP It's kind of cool, isn't it? | 0:00:51 | 0:00:55
We have all the usual suspects | 0:00:57 | 0:00:58
and our designer this week is the lovely Gabrielle Blackman. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
We only have nine days to do the job. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:03
This is DIY SOS: The Big Build! | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
CHEERING AND APPLAUSE | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
The beautiful Welsh border town of Monmouth | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
is home to the Fairlie family - Charlotte, Rob, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:28
and their twin boys, Teddy and Fox. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
Video technician Rob and childcare worker Charlotte met ten years ago. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:37
Char was flanked by a few guys | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
and then after I went to go and say hello, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
there was another guy and I'm, like, queuing to say hello. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:45
So, when I eventually said hello, I said, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:48
"Can I be fourth in line to buy you a drink?" | 0:01:48 | 0:01:50
And she said, "Yeah", and that was it. | 0:01:50 | 0:01:53
Three years ago, they got married and bought a run-down house | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
to renovate, ready to start their family life together. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
Then Charlotte found out she was pregnant...with twins. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
Having twins was so exciting | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
-and we were obviously elated, shocked, pleased. Brilliant! -Yeah. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:14
You'd been working with children for so long, you were born to be a mum. | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
All went well until late into the pregnancy, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
when Charlotte developed high blood pressure. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
She was monitored as a precaution | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
but there was no sign of what was to come. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
Charlotte gave birth to two healthy boys - Fox and Teddy. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:35
But just minutes later, she suffered a massive stroke, | 0:02:35 | 0:02:39
a rare but devastating event. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:41
Suddenly, she was gone from being quite excited, | 0:02:41 | 0:02:44
even during the Caesarean, and then just being asleep. | 0:02:44 | 0:02:49
But worse was to come. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
After a week in a coma, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
Charlotte suffered a brain bleed and needed emergency surgery. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:58
It was horrific. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
The surgeon said that Charlotte had a 1% chance | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
of surviving the operation | 0:03:03 | 0:03:05
and we were told to expect, you know, the worst. | 0:03:05 | 0:03:09
Against the odds, Charlotte pulled through. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
But the stroke left her with brain damage, | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
speech loss and partial paralysis. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
She spent a further nine months in hospital. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
With Rob constantly by her side, Charlotte's big sister, Angie, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:28
took on the role of mum to the twins. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:31
Rob struggled to cope with what happened to his wife, | 0:03:31 | 0:03:34
let alone the arrival of two little boys who need 24/7 care | 0:03:34 | 0:03:40
so, as a family, we all tried to do our best | 0:03:40 | 0:03:43
to support him and help him through. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:44
You can imagine it was just a horrendous time. | 0:03:44 | 0:03:47
After months of intensive rehab, Charlotte is back home. | 0:03:49 | 0:03:53
Physically, she's defying expectations, | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
slowly teaching herself to walk and battling hard to regain her speech. | 0:03:56 | 0:04:01
But the stroke had another cruel complication. | 0:04:02 | 0:04:05
Charlotte remembers nothing about going to hospital, | 0:04:06 | 0:04:09
and all the bits of Charlotte being pregnant, | 0:04:09 | 0:04:12
-Charlotte can't remember either. -Totally. -And giving birth. | 0:04:12 | 0:04:15
Even pictures don't really trigger any memory. | 0:04:15 | 0:04:18
-You just don't remember that time. -No. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:21
Charlotte is now desperate to make up for lost time, | 0:04:23 | 0:04:27
create new memories with her boys and be a mum 24/7. | 0:04:27 | 0:04:30
But their house is making that impossible. | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
The cramped cluttered rooms are unsafe for Charlotte to move around | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
and there's nowhere for her to do her physio, hampering her recovery. | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
BABY CRIES | 0:04:44 | 0:04:46
Looking after Charlotte and the twins | 0:04:46 | 0:04:49
is absolutely exhausting for Rob and it's taking its toll. | 0:04:49 | 0:04:52
It's impossible to juggle a full-time job, | 0:04:52 | 0:04:55
being a dad with twins, you know, and a full-time job as a carer. | 0:04:55 | 0:05:00
He desperately needs help, especially at nights, | 0:05:01 | 0:05:04
but there's no spare room for anyone to stay over, to give them respite. | 0:05:04 | 0:05:08
So, Rob is struggling to take care of Charlotte and the boys full-time. | 0:05:08 | 0:05:14
The children are basically living half the week away from home. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:18
It's not through choice. | 0:05:18 | 0:05:21
We don't have the space or facilities in the house | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
-just to be a normal family. -Painful, yeah. Mm. | 0:05:24 | 0:05:29
It's hard. It's hard for Charlotte, I think, more than anyone. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:34
She'd love to be with the boys more. | 0:05:34 | 0:05:36
That's the main thing, really, | 0:05:36 | 0:05:38
is to get Mummy, Daddy, Fox and Teddy all living together. | 0:05:38 | 0:05:42
It'll be lovely to be at home with Mummy and Daddy. | 0:05:42 | 0:05:44
All I want is for us to be that family unit that we talked about | 0:05:46 | 0:05:50
before the whole brain injury, before the stroke. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:53
That's all I want. | 0:05:53 | 0:05:55
And that's why we're here, to bring this fractured family back together. | 0:05:57 | 0:06:01
To what extent have you now taken over talking for Charlotte | 0:06:01 | 0:06:05
-and to what extent do you let Rob talk for you? -All the time. | 0:06:05 | 0:06:09
I have to stop myself from jumping in and talking for Charlotte | 0:06:09 | 0:06:14
because Charlotte's got to practise. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:15
So, you can speak but it's actually processing a sentence together. | 0:06:15 | 0:06:18
Process, yeah. | 0:06:18 | 0:06:20
-So, it's easier say "Yes" and "No" sometimes? -No, yeah. | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
Tell us about this house then. I notice on the wall is a little sign | 0:06:23 | 0:06:27
-from your occupational therapist. -Yeah. | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
Trying to build in the fact that the stairs can become | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
-an exercise for you, rather than something to fear. -Yeah. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
-So, this is something to embrace. -Yeah. | 0:06:35 | 0:06:37
Because we can build the house two separate ways. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:40
We can build it so that it's got lifts and pulleys and things | 0:06:40 | 0:06:42
or we could actually make it something to help you progress. | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
That's it, because Charlotte had a stroke at a relatively young age. | 0:06:45 | 0:06:49
For people of an older generation, | 0:06:49 | 0:06:51
they would need all the gubbins to help | 0:06:51 | 0:06:53
but actually, with Charlotte, | 0:06:53 | 0:06:55
cos her brain's so plastic and her body can still crack on, | 0:06:55 | 0:06:59
those become like a sort of barrier, if you like, | 0:06:59 | 0:07:03
-because that'll stop Charlotte from progressing. -Yeah. | 0:07:03 | 0:07:06
-So, some tough love, basically. -Yeah, tough love. | 0:07:06 | 0:07:08
Yeah, if Char can do her physio in the house, | 0:07:08 | 0:07:13
if the boys can be here with us, we're... | 0:07:13 | 0:07:15
I feel we're waiting to start as a family. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:18
-We haven't really started as a family yet. -Yeah. | 0:07:18 | 0:07:20
-I'm going to get the designer to come round and see you. -Yeah. | 0:07:20 | 0:07:23
I want you to have ownership. | 0:07:23 | 0:07:24
Just because you can't communicate at the moment, | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
-I don't want that to stop you being part of it, OK? -Yeah. -Good. -Yeah. | 0:07:27 | 0:07:30
All right, we ought to get you under way. | 0:07:30 | 0:07:32
Monmouth is a small, close-knit community | 0:07:32 | 0:07:35
and it looks as though half the town has turned out to help. | 0:07:35 | 0:07:39
APPLAUSE | 0:07:39 | 0:07:42
When Charlotte had a stroke, | 0:07:42 | 0:07:43
she lost the ability to communicate that well and walk | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
but, unlike, most, she's much better and it's going to take many years | 0:07:46 | 0:07:50
and, hopefully, with your help, that can happen | 0:07:50 | 0:07:52
and we can finally be a family and the parents we want to be. | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
-So, thank you all and good luck. -APPLAUSE | 0:07:55 | 0:07:58
Right, let's get cracking. We've got the usual nine days | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
to turn this cramped little house into a dream family home. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
The groundwork guys have given us a head start | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
by putting in the foundations for an extension. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:11
The scaffolding's up and, wow, look at the size of that! | 0:08:11 | 0:08:15
No prize for guessing who's going to want first dibs on that big boy. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:20
We're going to get the crane to lift the digger into the back garden | 0:08:22 | 0:08:24
cos, as normal, scaffolding's in the way, | 0:08:24 | 0:08:27
so the boys have very kindly offered to lift it over the roof. | 0:08:27 | 0:08:29
No problem at all. | 0:08:29 | 0:08:31
I'm not sure that's why we've got a gigantic crane here, Jules. | 0:08:31 | 0:08:35
If something does go wrong, it's 1.6 tonnes | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
that would fall through the house, but that's all right - | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
we have the manpower to put it back together again. | 0:08:42 | 0:08:45
Now the digger has landed, the trades can get stuck in, | 0:08:48 | 0:08:52
ripping, chipping and hammering out the inside. | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
When it comes to designers, | 0:08:57 | 0:08:59
we always look forward to working with Gabrielle Blackman. | 0:08:59 | 0:09:01
We love her! We treat her like a little sister, | 0:09:01 | 0:09:04
which I guess makes us the annoying older brothers. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:07
Somebody - and I know it wasn't you - | 0:09:10 | 0:09:13
somebody put my phone...changed the time on my phone | 0:09:13 | 0:09:16
to three hours ahead. And this is NOT funny! | 0:09:16 | 0:09:19
But you just wake up and realise and go back to bed. | 0:09:19 | 0:09:21
No, no, cos my alarm went off and it's day one of the build, | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
so I'm in a panic. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:26
Sp, I jump out of bed, shower, hair in rollers, | 0:09:26 | 0:09:30
full make-up in my kimono... | 0:09:30 | 0:09:32
-And it's four o'clock in the morning. -4am. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:34
It's four in the morning and it's NOT funny! | 0:09:34 | 0:09:37
-THEY LAUGH -Go on, stomp off. | 0:09:37 | 0:09:39
I'm stomping off in the right direction! | 0:09:39 | 0:09:41
Do your big cheese stomp. | 0:09:41 | 0:09:42
-She mistook the other day and stomped into a cupboard. -Did she? | 0:09:42 | 0:09:46
THEY LAUGH | 0:09:46 | 0:09:47
'Ah, bless! | 0:09:47 | 0:09:49
'She may not have mastered the art of a good stomp, | 0:09:49 | 0:09:51
'but she's got this design lark down pat.' | 0:09:51 | 0:09:54
This is all about creating a home for the whole family | 0:09:55 | 0:09:58
that gives them the space to come back together | 0:09:58 | 0:10:00
and for Charlotte to recover. | 0:10:00 | 0:10:02
We're building a timber-framed two-storey extension, | 0:10:02 | 0:10:06
which will double the ground floor space | 0:10:06 | 0:10:08
to provide an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, | 0:10:08 | 0:10:11
and reconfiguring the existing ground floor | 0:10:11 | 0:10:14
to create a playroom with space for Charlotte to do her physio. | 0:10:14 | 0:10:18
Upstairs, we're using the extra space | 0:10:20 | 0:10:22
to extend the twins' room | 0:10:22 | 0:10:24
and, importantly, create a much-needed guest bedroom, | 0:10:24 | 0:10:27
which means a carer or Auntie Angie can stay overnight | 0:10:27 | 0:10:30
so the family can be together. | 0:10:30 | 0:10:32
The family bathroom will become an en suite, making it more accessible | 0:10:34 | 0:10:37
and user-friendly for Charlotte, and we're adding a separate wet room. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:42
Finally, we're going to break up the sloping garden, | 0:10:43 | 0:10:46
so Charlotte can get outdoors to continue her rehab. | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
Charlotte is a busy mum and she wants to be | 0:10:52 | 0:10:54
really hands-on with her kids and I know, having spoken to her, | 0:10:54 | 0:10:57
she puts herself last and Rob is really worried about this, | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
so anything we can do to keep her rehabilitation | 0:11:00 | 0:11:04
as part of her daily life, | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
so the stairs, the steps down to the garden, | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
everything that we've thought about with the layout, | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
I just want it to be a fun place for them all to be, | 0:11:11 | 0:11:14
so she can recover and look after the boys at the same time. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:17
-So her physio becomes part of her everyday life. -Yeah. -Very clever. | 0:11:17 | 0:11:21
The Monmouth trades have lost no time gutting the old house. | 0:11:22 | 0:11:25
Just as well, because I think I hear the sound | 0:11:25 | 0:11:28
of a new flat-pack extension arriving. | 0:11:28 | 0:11:31
-LORRY REVERSE ALARM BEEPS -Keep going! | 0:11:31 | 0:11:33
-I don't want to put any pressure on here. -Go on. -But you've designed it. | 0:11:37 | 0:11:43
-Yeah. -Is it all going to fit? -I feel confident it will. | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
-He doesn't feel the pressure, does he? -Not at all, not at all. | 0:11:45 | 0:11:48
Gentlemen, thanks for doing this. | 0:11:48 | 0:11:49
It's brilliant. If we can get this in and wrapped up in two days, | 0:11:49 | 0:11:52
as you would say in gorgeous Wales, tidy darts. | 0:11:52 | 0:11:56
Tidy darts - absolutely. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:58
Tidy what? Joking aside, this a big job. | 0:11:58 | 0:12:02
It's going to need pinpoint accuracy. Look at that! | 0:12:02 | 0:12:05
Could you give me a decent tape? I lost mine on my last job. | 0:12:05 | 0:12:08
No, cos the last job I give you the other one, you broke that as well. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
-No, I didn't! Can you try and give me... -No, I will not! | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
-There's Perryman. -Where? -Just went past. -Trying to pinch my tape. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:19
-He's not having it. -I don't do it, as a rule. | 0:12:19 | 0:12:22
MARK LAUGHS | 0:12:22 | 0:12:24
That probably is his best joke ever! | 0:12:24 | 0:12:26
I think Mark's got the measure of Billy. | 0:12:26 | 0:12:29
All right, moving swiftly on. | 0:12:29 | 0:12:30
So, we've got a new bit of kit that shows you the top of the house, | 0:12:30 | 0:12:33
and look how beautiful Monmouth is. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:35
The new extension will go straight out onto the garden, | 0:12:35 | 0:12:38
where Gabby's got her heart set on a stone patio. | 0:12:38 | 0:12:40
What are you worried about, Jules? | 0:12:40 | 0:12:42
-I think it's too time-consuming to do in the time we've got. -Yes. | 0:12:42 | 0:12:45
-We talked about doing it in timber. -No, it's just too slippy. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:49
-It's a hazard and also, maintenance... -Yes. | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
The other alternative is the composite that looks like timber | 0:12:52 | 0:12:57
-but it's supposed to be non-slip. -They love natural wood. | 0:12:57 | 0:13:00
-I'd rather use something real and lovely. -Yeah. -Yes. | 0:13:00 | 0:13:04
If we absolutely have to go down that route... | 0:13:04 | 0:13:07
Can I just suggest there is a way of laying stone | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
over the top of that decking? There is a method for doing it. | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
I was at a yoga centre recently | 0:13:13 | 0:13:14
and they had that out the back of the yoga centre. | 0:13:14 | 0:13:17
It wasn't a yoga centre - it was a pub. | 0:13:17 | 0:13:19
If there is a way of me having a stone surface, | 0:13:19 | 0:13:22
that's all I'm interested in. | 0:13:22 | 0:13:23
I don't really care how you get it up. I just want it stone. | 0:13:23 | 0:13:27
'Er, um, a bit personal. Quick, move on! | 0:13:27 | 0:13:31
'Now, there's always a danger with older houses | 0:13:31 | 0:13:33
'that once you start stripping things out, | 0:13:33 | 0:13:35
'you find all kinds of problems lurking.' | 0:13:35 | 0:13:37
We've got a bit of an issue with the side of the house, in that... | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
Well, is it a big issue? I don't know, really. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:43
You decide for yourself. The side of the house might fall off. | 0:13:43 | 0:13:46
Literally, the whole side of the house might fall off. | 0:13:46 | 0:13:49
If you follow that line up, you can see that it's actually separating. | 0:13:49 | 0:13:52
That looks like a lot of extra work we weren't counting on, | 0:13:52 | 0:13:55
but we don't really want bits of the house falling on people - | 0:13:55 | 0:13:58
not on day one anyway! | 0:13:58 | 0:14:00
We're going to have to go outside | 0:14:00 | 0:14:02
and put some strong boys in the brickwork on the outside | 0:14:02 | 0:14:05
-to hold that end up. Whatever you do, do it double. -Yeah. | 0:14:05 | 0:14:09
There's a lot of people running around, | 0:14:09 | 0:14:11
so where you'd normally have three acrows, we'll put five. | 0:14:11 | 0:14:14
That's not really double, is it, Chris? | 0:14:14 | 0:14:16
Once the extension's complete, | 0:14:16 | 0:14:19
we'll need to put a lot more strength back into this house, | 0:14:19 | 0:14:22
but at least that's slotting together like a dream. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:25
Just the roof to go. Here it comes. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:28
It's amazing! | 0:14:32 | 0:14:34
What do you guys think of your first day doing this? | 0:14:35 | 0:14:38
We've had a great day, to be honest. We're up to the roof level, | 0:14:38 | 0:14:41
we should be in the dry before end of play today. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:43
We're just glad that we're helping and trying to make a difference | 0:14:43 | 0:14:45
-to somebody else. -Thank you so much, my loves, thank you. | 0:14:45 | 0:14:48
It's that kind of positive attitude all around the country | 0:14:48 | 0:14:51
that lets us do these ridiculous builds. | 0:14:51 | 0:14:53
If you look at the original house - I've just come through | 0:14:53 | 0:14:56
where the old wall used to be - there's all this extra room. | 0:14:56 | 0:14:59
Essentially, we've doubled the size of the downstairs. | 0:14:59 | 0:15:02
Not bad for a day. We're going to have this watertight | 0:15:02 | 0:15:04
by the end of the day. Just as well, cos it's going to rain tomorrow. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:07
Look at that - our new bit of kit again. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:10
Morning, morning, morning, morning! | 0:15:12 | 0:15:14
Today, we're expecting something big, red and shiny onsite. | 0:15:14 | 0:15:19
No, not Billy's nose. Or that steel. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:21
Oh, that IS what we're talking about. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:24
Oh, that! Yes, we've asked them to come out and hose down Mark. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:28
He just doesn't know anything about it. | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
SIREN WAILS | 0:15:31 | 0:15:33
-Is there a fire? -We're here to help. -What, building? -Give it a go. | 0:15:34 | 0:15:38
-Oh, yeah? You're here to join us for today? -We here for a bit. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:41
-Between your shifts? -Yeah. -Thank you, ladies and gents. -No worries. | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
We really have got the whole community getting involved. | 0:15:44 | 0:15:47
These are the boys and girls of the Monmouth fire station. | 0:15:47 | 0:15:51
We do see people in very tough situations, | 0:15:51 | 0:15:55
but we don't usually see people at this part. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:57
We see it on jobs and then we're kind of detached | 0:15:57 | 0:16:00
from any recovery or anything like that. | 0:16:00 | 0:16:02
So, it's great for us to be part of something here | 0:16:02 | 0:16:04
which is the next step on, if you like, after they've had that trauma. | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
It's great to be part of someone's recovery and recuperation. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:10
Doesn't that warm the cockles of your heart? It warms mine. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:13
Unlike this old chimney, which won't be warming anybody's cockles. | 0:16:13 | 0:16:16
We're turning part of the existing living room area into a playroom | 0:16:16 | 0:16:20
for the boys and a physio space for Charlotte, | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
which means getting rid of the chimney breast downstairs. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:26
A good tip, not just to knock out the chimney breast at the bottom, | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
-about having a good look at what's up top. -You're right, yeah. | 0:16:29 | 0:16:33
-There's a tremendous lump of weight there. -There is. | 0:16:33 | 0:16:35
I can see the bricks have been removed and this is just floating. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
We'd better do something about it. | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40
-Do you know a man who could maybe sort this out? -I do. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
-Who's that? -THEY LAUGH | 0:16:42 | 0:16:45
We're already using a lot of steels to strengthen the house, | 0:16:45 | 0:16:48
but we hadn't planned on having to shore up the chimney as well. | 0:16:48 | 0:16:51
By the time we've finished, this house will have | 0:16:51 | 0:16:53
more heavy metal than Metallica. | 0:16:53 | 0:16:55
But it's not the metal that's important - | 0:16:55 | 0:16:57
it's the manpower to make it happen. | 0:16:57 | 0:16:59
Everyone's working hard to create a home | 0:16:59 | 0:17:01
that will enable the family to finally be together full-time. | 0:17:01 | 0:17:05
Charlotte's best friends know how important that is to them. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:09
-I'm Lizzy. -Lizzy. -I'm Ruth. -Ruth. Hello, nice to meet you. | 0:17:10 | 0:17:13
-Who's that down there? -This is Sylvie. -Sylvie. Hello. | 0:17:13 | 0:17:16
Sylvie's a day younger than Teddy and Fox, | 0:17:16 | 0:17:19
so Char and I were both pregnant at exactly the same time. | 0:17:19 | 0:17:22
-Thanks to MY wedding. -We know that's where... Is that what happened? | 0:17:22 | 0:17:25
Yeah, that's what you get with a free bar. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:28
THEY LAUGH | 0:17:28 | 0:17:29
How much are we actually seeing of the real Charlotte? | 0:17:29 | 0:17:33
Because it's very difficult for us to know, having not met her before. | 0:17:33 | 0:17:36
Quite a bit, I think. | 0:17:36 | 0:17:38
I mean, even from the start, she's still been there to us. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:42
She's still been the same personality. That is her. | 0:17:42 | 0:17:45
She's always that sunny disposition. | 0:17:45 | 0:17:47
A huge responsibility for Rob to take on - | 0:17:47 | 0:17:49
thinking that he was going into hospital | 0:17:49 | 0:17:51
and coming back with a wife and two children | 0:17:51 | 0:17:53
and to come back and be a carer. | 0:17:53 | 0:17:55
It's just crazy and I don't think a lot of people would have pushed | 0:17:55 | 0:17:59
as much as he pushed in the early days. | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
When I was visiting her in the rehab centre when she was in hospital, | 0:18:01 | 0:18:05
it was him that was pushing for the next step that she could make | 0:18:05 | 0:18:08
and it was him that really did push the whole way through | 0:18:08 | 0:18:10
and I think it's a lot down to that she got out of hospital | 0:18:10 | 0:18:13
as quickly as she did, | 0:18:13 | 0:18:15
given the severity of what she was going through. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
Kind of more important now to build a place | 0:18:17 | 0:18:19
where she can be reintroduced to her twins. | 0:18:19 | 0:18:21
She was robbed of that maternal instinct | 0:18:21 | 0:18:24
because of not actually remembering being pregnant, | 0:18:24 | 0:18:27
not recognising the twins. | 0:18:27 | 0:18:29
So, what, as a mother, is just instinctive, | 0:18:29 | 0:18:32
Charlotte has had to learn that | 0:18:32 | 0:18:34
and she has an amazing bond with her children and they with her. | 0:18:34 | 0:18:37
You can see it. She's just amazing with them. | 0:18:37 | 0:18:40
So, this house will make a real difference. | 0:18:40 | 0:18:42
It will make the world of difference to them. | 0:18:42 | 0:18:44
They can be just a normal family, which is all she ever wanted. | 0:18:44 | 0:18:47
And that's what we all want for Charlotte. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:51
One of the biggest issues for Charlotte since the stroke | 0:18:54 | 0:18:56
is how it's affected her speech and communication. | 0:18:56 | 0:18:59
Gabby wants to make sure her voice is heard, | 0:19:01 | 0:19:04
so she's popping round to sister Angie's, for a chat with Charlotte. | 0:19:04 | 0:19:08
-If I just get some colours out. -Yeah. -I just want this to be right. | 0:19:10 | 0:19:13
It's your home and I want you to feel it's right for you. | 0:19:13 | 0:19:16
-You don't have to choose particular colours. -Yeah. | 0:19:16 | 0:19:19
Are there some that you really love or some you really don't like? | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
-Yes, yeah. -Mm-hmm. | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
No. Yes. | 0:19:26 | 0:19:29
-This sort of soft... -Yeah. -..natural spectrum, you like. -Yeah. | 0:19:29 | 0:19:35
Practically speaking, what's the hardest thing? | 0:19:35 | 0:19:38
Oof, um, the leg. | 0:19:38 | 0:19:42
-Mm-hmm. -Um, arm. | 0:19:42 | 0:19:45
Speech. | 0:19:45 | 0:19:47
-What is that stopping you from doing at home? -Shower, bath, no, no. | 0:19:47 | 0:19:53
Sad. | 0:19:55 | 0:19:56 | |
When was the last time you were able to have a bath at home? | 0:19:56 | 0:19:59
-Oh, I can't remember. -Yeah. -Yeah. -A long time ago. -Yes, long time. -Yeah. | 0:19:59 | 0:20:05
From looking around, you've got a lot of equipment that you need, | 0:20:05 | 0:20:09
-a lot of physio stuff. -Yeah. -How hard work is that? | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
-Are you having to do exercises every day? -Extra day, yeah, extra day. | 0:20:12 | 0:20:17
Yeah. | 0:20:17 | 0:20:18 | |
Up and down and walk the miles. | 0:20:18 | 0:20:22
-Yeah. -Going up and down the stairs is good for you, isn't it? -Yeah. | 0:20:22 | 0:20:26
-Are you OK on the stairs? -Yes, fine, yes. -That's good. | 0:20:26 | 0:20:30
-Up and down, the banisters. -Mm-hmm. -Yeah. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:34
And Fox and Teddy - is there something really special | 0:20:34 | 0:20:37
that you would love to give to the boys? | 0:20:37 | 0:20:40
-Yeah, together. -Just to be together? | 0:20:40 | 0:20:43
-Yeah, yeah. -Oh, darling, we can sort that out. | 0:20:43 | 0:20:46
I think that was a great chat with Gabby and shows that, | 0:20:46 | 0:20:49
even with limited speech capability, | 0:20:49 | 0:20:51
Charlotte can be part of the decision-making. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:54
-Don't pick the lime green! -Still trying to get her way. | 0:20:55 | 0:21:00
Back onsite, we're bidding farewell to our firefighters, | 0:21:00 | 0:21:03
who've given the build a much-needed lift. | 0:21:03 | 0:21:06
That was nice, wasn't it? They just turned up. | 0:21:08 | 0:21:11
They had an hour and a half off, popped in, | 0:21:11 | 0:21:12
fiddled around with the steels, helped clear out the garden | 0:21:12 | 0:21:15
and off they went to save somebody else's lives. | 0:21:15 | 0:21:17
-We are like an emergency service. -No, we're not. -Yeah. | 0:21:17 | 0:21:20
We're like the fifth emergency service. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:22
No, we aren't. We really aren't. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:24
SIREN WAILS | 0:21:24 | 0:21:28
No time for dad dancing. We've got a chimney to shore up. Get on with it! | 0:21:28 | 0:21:32
Chris, make some sense, please. | 0:21:32 | 0:21:34
We want to release this here, so we have to catch the top of the chimney | 0:21:34 | 0:21:39
by spreading the load over a steel, just to sustain the chimney. | 0:21:39 | 0:21:43
-It's just like kind of threading a needle. -Nice and steady. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
A big needle. | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
Looks like it's going to fit. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:50
Now we can safely smash that chimney down. | 0:21:52 | 0:21:55
I love it when a plan comes together. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:57
It's only day two, | 0:21:59 | 0:22:00
but we've already got loads of trades onsite, | 0:22:00 | 0:22:02
all doing their bit for Charlotte, Rob and the boys, | 0:22:02 | 0:22:04
and it surprises even seasoned builders | 0:22:04 | 0:22:07
who've been doing it for years. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:09
-It's amazing what a lot of people doing a little... -Yeah. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:12
It can make a big difference, can't it? | 0:22:12 | 0:22:14
Now, it may look chaotic | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
but these trades have a good eye for detail - not only with their work. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:20
What's going on with your eyebrows? THEY LAUGH | 0:22:21 | 0:22:25
Caught out. | 0:22:27 | 0:22:29
Seriously, cos all young dudes are doing all this stuff, aren't they, | 0:22:29 | 0:22:32
with their eyebrows? My son does it. So, what's going on? | 0:22:32 | 0:22:34
-You have them trimmed up? -Yeah. -Is that the look now, is it? | 0:22:34 | 0:22:37
I'll do mine tonight! | 0:22:37 | 0:22:39
THEY LAUGH | 0:22:39 | 0:22:41
'For an old dog like me, | 0:22:41 | 0:22:43
'I'd like to see less man-scaping and more landscaping. | 0:22:43 | 0:22:46
'But there's much going on in the garden. | 0:22:46 | 0:22:48
'Mike's idea for a stone-topped deck is a nonstarter, | 0:22:48 | 0:22:51
'so we're back to composite. Or are we?' | 0:22:51 | 0:22:54
I thought we had that nailed down yesterday. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:57
No, it's changed four times since then. | 0:22:57 | 0:22:59
Is there something you need to talk to me directly about? | 0:22:59 | 0:23:01
-Why are you still messing about? -I'm not messing about. | 0:23:01 | 0:23:04
Apparently, we're still discussing this deck. | 0:23:04 | 0:23:06
-We've sorted it now, haven't we, Jules? -Only within the last hour. | 0:23:06 | 0:23:08
Is it anything like the thing we decided | 0:23:08 | 0:23:10
at about two o'clock yesterday afternoon? | 0:23:10 | 0:23:12
Probably about ten o'clock yesterday morning, we decided it | 0:23:12 | 0:23:15
and we've gone full circle, back to where we were. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:17
-No, we didn't decide it. -That's what I said | 0:23:17 | 0:23:19
is the most practical solution and what's going to work. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
But it also needs to look fabulous. | 0:23:22 | 0:23:24
So now we are, 36 hours later, back at the exact spot | 0:23:24 | 0:23:28
where we started off yesterday, | 0:23:28 | 0:23:30
much to the disgust of our esteemed designer. | 0:23:30 | 0:23:33
I may just as well have been standing at that wall | 0:23:33 | 0:23:35
-head-butting it for two days. That's what I feel like. -Mm. | 0:23:35 | 0:23:38
-Not that wall. It would have fell down. -It would have fell down. | 0:23:38 | 0:23:41
THEY LAUGH | 0:23:41 | 0:23:43
Yes, years ago, before health and safety, | 0:23:43 | 0:23:44
we got him to run at a wall to knock it over. | 0:23:44 | 0:23:46
It worked very well, I have to tell you. | 0:23:46 | 0:23:48
With the main structural work out of the way, | 0:23:48 | 0:23:50
the trades inside are charging ahead. | 0:23:50 | 0:23:53
The last three days, we've been really working so hard | 0:23:53 | 0:23:57
and now we've got a production line doing all the down lighters. | 0:23:57 | 0:24:00
It looks good, doesn't it? | 0:24:00 | 0:24:02
I'm just going to go and make a cup of tea, boys. Are you all right? | 0:24:02 | 0:24:05
Lovely. No sugars in mine, thanks, Billy. My body is a temple. | 0:24:05 | 0:24:09
We may have an embarrassment of sparks, | 0:24:09 | 0:24:11
but we're short of bodies in other areas. | 0:24:11 | 0:24:14
We've only got two plasterers and we should have 14. | 0:24:14 | 0:24:17
-IN MARK'S IRISH ACCENT: -We've already lost an hour. | 0:24:17 | 0:24:19
That's 14 hours' labour. I'm just hoping the numbers will build. | 0:24:19 | 0:24:22
For everybody else, "ars" are "hours". | 0:24:22 | 0:24:25
We need to plasterboard the whole house today, | 0:24:25 | 0:24:27
so Chris has come up with a novel way to speed things up. | 0:24:27 | 0:24:30
Stairwell too small to take the plasterboards upstairs, | 0:24:30 | 0:24:33
so we've cut a letterbox in and fire them up through the floor. | 0:24:33 | 0:24:37
Remind me never to let him anywhere near...let him near...let him... | 0:24:37 | 0:24:40
Remind me to invite him over for dinner. | 0:24:40 | 0:24:42
I just noticed him behind me. Things are looking up on the garden front. | 0:24:42 | 0:24:45
The new fence is going in and we've just had a delivery | 0:24:45 | 0:24:48
of railway sleepers, which we're using to build raised beds. | 0:24:48 | 0:24:51
I've been on a health and safety course recently | 0:24:51 | 0:24:54
and I discovered that if you don't warm up properly, | 0:24:54 | 0:24:57
you can get into all kinds of trouble. | 0:24:57 | 0:24:59
MUSIC: Waltz No 6 In D Flat, Op 6, No 1 by Chopin | 0:24:59 | 0:25:03
You're just trying to hold out your warm-up routine | 0:25:11 | 0:25:13
until we've finished, are you? | 0:25:13 | 0:25:15
That's an outrageous suggestion! | 0:25:15 | 0:25:17
-Phew! -I think you're more tired out after the warm-up | 0:25:28 | 0:25:32
than actually lifting THE piece of wood. | 0:25:32 | 0:25:34
Time for a cup of tea, I think. | 0:25:34 | 0:25:36
'But in fact, there's no time for a brew, | 0:25:36 | 0:25:38
'because we've got some important earth-moving going on | 0:25:38 | 0:25:41
'in the back garden. | 0:25:41 | 0:25:43
'We need to take advantage of that amazing view out the back, | 0:25:43 | 0:25:46
'and the thing about a garden is, if you get it right, | 0:25:46 | 0:25:49
'you can increase your living space by up to 50%. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52
'This is a place where Charlotte can come and work on her rehabilitation, | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
'spend time with the kids, | 0:25:55 | 0:25:57
'spend time as a family, out in the open air. | 0:25:57 | 0:26:00
'And on a day like this, why wouldn't you?' | 0:26:00 | 0:26:02
Since the stroke, | 0:26:03 | 0:26:04
Auntie Angie's house has become a haven for Charlotte and the boys. | 0:26:04 | 0:26:07
Even with six children and three grandchildren of her own, | 0:26:07 | 0:26:10
Angie has been a rock to the family. | 0:26:10 | 0:26:13
How soon was it apparent | 0:26:13 | 0:26:14
-that Charlotte's stroke was a very severe one? -Very soon. | 0:26:14 | 0:26:17
They said, "We've got to move her to Cardiff. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:20
"We've got to operate on her brain straightaway | 0:26:20 | 0:26:24
"to relieve the pressure." | 0:26:24 | 0:26:27
So, Mum actually said goodbye to her. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:29
She said, "Charlotte, if you need to go, we'll look after the boys." | 0:26:31 | 0:26:34
So, um... | 0:26:34 | 0:26:36
Luckily, she fought on. I couldn't help Charlotte get better. | 0:26:39 | 0:26:42
The only thing I could do for Charlotte was look after the boys, | 0:26:42 | 0:26:45
so I wanted to do that the best I could. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
And how is it being a sort of surrogate mum of twins? | 0:26:49 | 0:26:52
It, well, just shock, really, all round. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:55
And not really like being a mum | 0:26:55 | 0:26:58
-because we were constantly conscious of Charlotte. -Of course. | 0:26:58 | 0:27:01
I wouldn't let anyone near those twins | 0:27:01 | 0:27:03
because Charlotte had to do everything first, | 0:27:03 | 0:27:05
so if anyone knocked on the door, I'd say, "You can't come in. | 0:27:05 | 0:27:08
"You're not seeing the twins before Charlotte. | 0:27:08 | 0:27:10
"You're not holding the twins before Charlotte." | 0:27:10 | 0:27:12
It was all about keeping them for Charlotte and that was it. | 0:27:12 | 0:27:16
We photo'ed them and filmed them daily, everything, | 0:27:16 | 0:27:19
so that Charlotte now has a record of every day she missed. | 0:27:19 | 0:27:22
And how's that relationship developing | 0:27:22 | 0:27:25
between her and her boys now? | 0:27:25 | 0:27:26
It's really coming on now, since Charlotte was able to... | 0:27:26 | 0:27:29
Well, Charlotte came out of hospital after nine months, | 0:27:29 | 0:27:32
so it's all picked up. | 0:27:32 | 0:27:34
Unfortunately, Char has to do loads of therapies and things, | 0:27:34 | 0:27:36
so she still can't be with the boys as much as she'd like to, | 0:27:36 | 0:27:39
but the bond's really there now, which is lovely. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:42
When you're sat here with the twins | 0:27:42 | 0:27:44
and your little sister next to you on the sofa, is it the same? | 0:27:44 | 0:27:48
-No, she's a different person now. -Is she? | 0:27:48 | 0:27:50
She is a different person now, yeah. But we all change. | 0:27:50 | 0:27:53
She's still my little sister | 0:27:53 | 0:27:55
and I'll always love her and look after her. | 0:27:55 | 0:27:57
I want to talk about Rob a little, because Rob's thinking, | 0:27:57 | 0:28:00
"Great, a baby's going to come along," and this whole new life... | 0:28:00 | 0:28:03
-Yeah. -..ceases to exist, pretty much, doesn't it? -Yeah. | 0:28:03 | 0:28:08
Yeah, it's horrendous. I'm not surprised he struggled to cope. | 0:28:08 | 0:28:12
I don't think anyone wouldn't struggle to cope. | 0:28:12 | 0:28:14
Charlotte was the one that did everything. | 0:28:14 | 0:28:16
She was organised, she looked after Rob. | 0:28:16 | 0:28:19
So, for him to be left in the position he's in and is still in, | 0:28:19 | 0:28:23
to a degree, it's horrendous, and I think he's still struggling with it. | 0:28:23 | 0:28:26
He's still struggling to come to terms with what's happened. | 0:28:26 | 0:28:30
It's not how it was meant to be. | 0:28:30 | 0:28:33
Back on site, our plasterers have already boarded out the extension, | 0:28:40 | 0:28:43
ready for the concrete screed. | 0:28:43 | 0:28:45
We want the whole ground floor to be level, so there are no steps | 0:28:45 | 0:28:48
or trip hazards for Charlotte or two lively toddlers. | 0:28:48 | 0:28:51
-Have you seen the new swimming pool? -Let's have a look. Look at that. | 0:28:54 | 0:28:57
Isn't that beautiful? It's a bit dark though. | 0:28:57 | 0:28:59
It's a bit dark for telly. | 0:28:59 | 0:29:01
We're supposed to be making this look glamorous, mate. | 0:29:01 | 0:29:03
What would you be using in the film game to light all this? | 0:29:03 | 0:29:05
He was a film electrician. That's why he's rubbish at house electrics. | 0:29:05 | 0:29:08
I'm a bloody good house electrician, I'll tell you, I'll sort you out. | 0:29:08 | 0:29:12
-Not so good on sentences. -No, still haven't sorted THAT out! | 0:29:12 | 0:29:16
'Bless him. You can always rely on Billy.' | 0:29:16 | 0:29:20
After a slow start today, the pace has really, really picked up. | 0:29:20 | 0:29:24
The upstairs rooms are beginning to take shape. | 0:29:24 | 0:29:26
Putting in the guest bedroom is crucial | 0:29:26 | 0:29:28
to the family being together. | 0:29:28 | 0:29:30
It will give them the space for someone to stay over | 0:29:30 | 0:29:33
to help out and that's everything. | 0:29:33 | 0:29:35
Standing up here, looking out, one of the things you really notice | 0:29:36 | 0:29:39
is the amazing views off the back of this house. | 0:29:39 | 0:29:41
And they say that if you can see nature, | 0:29:41 | 0:29:43
your chances of recovery improve by anything up to 30%. | 0:29:43 | 0:29:47
That's got to be good news for Charlotte, hasn't it? | 0:29:47 | 0:29:49
Beautiful. Look at it. | 0:29:49 | 0:29:50
The call to arms went out and we've now got an army of plasterers, | 0:29:56 | 0:29:59
which is good news, especially for Chris, | 0:29:59 | 0:30:02
as there are lots of walls and ceilings for them to do battle with. | 0:30:02 | 0:30:05
-It's good to go. All right, bud? -Yeah. -Thank you. | 0:30:08 | 0:30:10
Yeah, look at him. He's happy. | 0:30:10 | 0:30:12
Now, the bifold doors have arrived, which is good, | 0:30:12 | 0:30:15
because it'll open out onto that beautiful vista from the kitchen. | 0:30:15 | 0:30:19
Great. Trouble is, there's something in the way. | 0:30:19 | 0:30:21
That will fly in there. | 0:30:23 | 0:30:25
No way. No way. | 0:30:26 | 0:30:28
LAUGHTER | 0:30:28 | 0:30:30
Yes, the old measuring up first, Mark. | 0:30:30 | 0:30:32
Remember we talked about that earlier on? | 0:30:32 | 0:30:34
OK, back on the van, lads. | 0:30:34 | 0:30:36
One of the things I love most about The Big Build | 0:30:37 | 0:30:40
is the people who turn up to lend a hand. | 0:30:40 | 0:30:42
-There's a rumour onsite you're a champion bricklayer. -That's right. | 0:30:42 | 0:30:44
-Was in 2003, yeah. -Champion of where? -Wales. Welsh champion. | 0:30:44 | 0:30:49
-Welsh champion? -Yeah. -So we've got a champion bricklayer of Wales in, | 0:30:49 | 0:30:52
-and we've got you doing what? -I'm cutting some leadwork... | 0:30:52 | 0:30:55
THEY LAUGH | 0:30:55 | 0:30:57
..to fix this lintel, so hopefully, | 0:30:57 | 0:30:58
we don't get any damp in the front of the house. | 0:30:58 | 0:31:01
-We're honoured to have you on board. -I'm honoured to be here, guys. | 0:31:01 | 0:31:03
Isn't that lovely? | 0:31:03 | 0:31:05
And we get it all the time - people who really enjoy joining in. | 0:31:05 | 0:31:08
Unbelievably, the new extension is already plastered | 0:31:08 | 0:31:10
and the team are steaming through the upstairs rooms. | 0:31:10 | 0:31:13
Everyone's just here to help and when you have a bit of bad luck, | 0:31:13 | 0:31:16
there's nothing more pleasing than people coming together | 0:31:16 | 0:31:19
to help someone for a cause like it is, ain't it? | 0:31:19 | 0:31:23
He's right, but it's lovely to hear, don't you think? | 0:31:23 | 0:31:26
It's take two on the bifold doors. | 0:31:26 | 0:31:28
The scaffold has been shifted back to make room for them to fit - | 0:31:28 | 0:31:31
we hope. And they're now... | 0:31:31 | 0:31:34
slotting in like a dream. There we go. | 0:31:34 | 0:31:37
-Happy days! -Happy days. | 0:31:37 | 0:31:39
-Does it all fit? -They don't fit! | 0:31:43 | 0:31:45
Couple of minor technical adjustments. | 0:31:45 | 0:31:48
-What, like the scaffold was in the way... -Minor adjustments. | 0:31:48 | 0:31:52
-But they look beautiful, absolutely gorgeous. -Yeah. | 0:31:52 | 0:31:56
So, let's take stock. | 0:31:57 | 0:31:59
We're more than halfway through our Big Build | 0:31:59 | 0:32:01
and the garden's finally taking shape. | 0:32:01 | 0:32:04
The first flight of stone steps are in. | 0:32:04 | 0:32:06
These will be great for Charlotte's rehab | 0:32:06 | 0:32:09
and we're building raised planters either side. | 0:32:09 | 0:32:11
For Charlotte, these are fantastic | 0:32:13 | 0:32:15
because it means you're not bending down to ground level. | 0:32:15 | 0:32:18
Much more pleasing on the eye | 0:32:18 | 0:32:19
and it adds height and texture to the garden as well. | 0:32:19 | 0:32:23
It doubles up. It could become a sandpit as well. | 0:32:23 | 0:32:26
I think he's joking, but we are all about options. | 0:32:26 | 0:32:29
Inside, the kitchen cabinets are going in. | 0:32:29 | 0:32:32
The new open-plan kitchen will give Charlotte plenty of room | 0:32:32 | 0:32:34
to move around, which should make life that little bit easier. | 0:32:34 | 0:32:38
Ah, what have we got here then? A bevy of beauties painting. | 0:32:41 | 0:32:45
Oh, and another beauty in the corner. | 0:32:45 | 0:32:48
Thank you very much for giving up your weekend. I hope you enjoy it. | 0:32:48 | 0:32:51
We can only pay you with food. | 0:32:51 | 0:32:53
-Can we get the odd peck on the cheek, Billy? -Yes, course you can. | 0:32:53 | 0:32:57
I'm happy with that. Mwah. Thank you. | 0:32:57 | 0:33:00
Come on, son! Do you want a peck on the cheek? There you are, see. | 0:33:02 | 0:33:07
No favouritism here, is there? | 0:33:07 | 0:33:10
Well, I hope they're all up-to-date on their inoculations. | 0:33:11 | 0:33:14
It finally had to happen, I suppose, | 0:33:14 | 0:33:16
but rain rarely stops play on a Big Build, | 0:33:16 | 0:33:19
especially when there's so much at stake for the family. | 0:33:19 | 0:33:22
My daughter's got twin girls as well, | 0:33:24 | 0:33:27
about the same age as the twins here, | 0:33:27 | 0:33:29
and I know what hard work it is. Gosh, unbelievable. | 0:33:29 | 0:33:33
When one runs one way, one runs the other way, what do you do? | 0:33:33 | 0:33:36
So, I can imagine how hard it is for these people. | 0:33:36 | 0:33:38
He's right, of course. | 0:33:38 | 0:33:40
Twins are a wonderful gift but they're a lot of hard work, | 0:33:40 | 0:33:43
and it has been hard for the whole family, | 0:33:43 | 0:33:45
so when Charlotte had her stroke, the impact was felt by everyone, | 0:33:45 | 0:33:48
but no-one more so than Rob. | 0:33:48 | 0:33:51
You went into hospital with your wife, | 0:33:51 | 0:33:54
expecting to come home with twins. | 0:33:54 | 0:33:57
-Yeah. -You came home the father of twins, but also then a carer. -Yeah. | 0:33:57 | 0:34:02
How do you begin to get your head round that? | 0:34:02 | 0:34:04
It was horrific and then you're just sort of riding a storm. | 0:34:04 | 0:34:08
-Are you still riding a storm? You are a bit, aren't you? -I haven't... | 0:34:08 | 0:34:12
I don't feel I've, um... I'm not sure if I've come to terms with it. | 0:34:12 | 0:34:15
I haven't really... I haven't had a conversation with Char | 0:34:15 | 0:34:18
since the boys, so for a year and five months. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:21
-You miss her? -Hugely. | 0:34:21 | 0:34:23
I miss our little chats. | 0:34:25 | 0:34:27
I miss her coming home or into a room, smiling, | 0:34:27 | 0:34:32
and I still expect her, maybe, to come in one day | 0:34:32 | 0:34:36
and to be as she was. | 0:34:36 | 0:34:38
But I don't like to say it too much cos I don't want her to feel | 0:34:38 | 0:34:41
like she's not there either, cos she is, underneath. | 0:34:41 | 0:34:43
She just can't express who she is. | 0:34:43 | 0:34:45
-It's a different relationship, isn't it? -It is, very much so. | 0:34:45 | 0:34:48
And we've had that for quite a long time now. | 0:34:48 | 0:34:51
All I want is for us to get back to being a couple | 0:34:51 | 0:34:54
and that's something that no-one really sees, apart from me. | 0:34:54 | 0:34:59
Do you think the house being finished, | 0:34:59 | 0:35:01
with Char and the boys being able to stay there | 0:35:01 | 0:35:04
and Angie being able to come over and stay | 0:35:04 | 0:35:06
will give you enough confidence that it might be a new start? | 0:35:06 | 0:35:09
Completely. What you guys are doing might be sort of the only, | 0:35:09 | 0:35:14
the only way we can start as a family. | 0:35:14 | 0:35:17
It's a hell of a good reason to go and build a house, isn't it? | 0:35:17 | 0:35:20
Phew, it's the best reason I can think of. | 0:35:20 | 0:35:22
When all this happened, even when Charlotte came back to the house, | 0:35:22 | 0:35:26
and the boys... that hope just vanished. | 0:35:26 | 0:35:31
-It disappeared. -And now? | 0:35:31 | 0:35:33
It feels like it could be a whole new start - | 0:35:33 | 0:35:35
an environment that Char can grow and definitely get better, | 0:35:35 | 0:35:38
with her own motivation, which is huge, and the boys. | 0:35:38 | 0:35:41
Oh, it would just be... It's a dream. It's a dream now. | 0:35:41 | 0:35:45
Getting back to our own dream makers. | 0:35:54 | 0:35:57
Just a couple of days to go and Mark's gone all Braveheart. | 0:35:57 | 0:36:00
The garden's got to be finished by Wednesday night. | 0:36:00 | 0:36:02
We didn't realise how big this was going to be, | 0:36:02 | 0:36:04
so you have got a bit of a challenge on. | 0:36:04 | 0:36:06
The trades have been going hell for leather on this build, | 0:36:06 | 0:36:10
but there's still loads to do. | 0:36:10 | 0:36:12
Now, normally, Jules is never happier than when he's in a digger, | 0:36:13 | 0:36:16
but I think the stress of the garden build | 0:36:16 | 0:36:18
may have got to him a little bit. | 0:36:18 | 0:36:21
The powers that be have decided that this hedge is coming out. | 0:36:21 | 0:36:25
It would have been a lot easier to take it out four days ago, | 0:36:25 | 0:36:28
but there you go. Who am I to reason why? | 0:36:28 | 0:36:30
I've got the wrong bucket on but I'm too angry to change it. | 0:36:32 | 0:36:35
That's embarrassing! Digger drivers all over the country | 0:36:35 | 0:36:37
-will be going, "Look at that fool!" -I know! | 0:36:37 | 0:36:41
You are what digger drivers look up to. | 0:36:41 | 0:36:44
MARK LAUGHS | 0:36:44 | 0:36:46
-He's a digger man! -I'm the digger man! | 0:36:46 | 0:36:50
I'm not sure, actually, that Mark laughing at Julian's helping, | 0:36:53 | 0:36:57
but there you go. | 0:36:57 | 0:36:59
Inside, the kitchen floor's going down, | 0:36:59 | 0:37:01
ready for the bespoke worktops, which have just turned up. | 0:37:01 | 0:37:04
-Have you used the concrete in your kitchens before? -Never. -No? | 0:37:06 | 0:37:09
-No, this is the first time. Looks nice. -It's amazing, isn't it? | 0:37:09 | 0:37:12
-Whereabouts in Wales are you from? -Glasgow! -I thought so. | 0:37:12 | 0:37:15
THEY LAUGH | 0:37:15 | 0:37:18
Yep, they come from all over. | 0:37:18 | 0:37:20
With the scaffolding down, | 0:37:20 | 0:37:22
the foundation for the decking is finally going in. | 0:37:22 | 0:37:25
Now, there's just the matter of 25 tonnes of topsoil | 0:37:25 | 0:37:28
and 40 tonnes of aggregate to shift. | 0:37:28 | 0:37:31
But I do feel we're getting closer | 0:37:31 | 0:37:33
to putting some colour in the garden. | 0:37:33 | 0:37:35
Look at that, look. Look at the blossom over there. | 0:37:36 | 0:37:39
-That's not blossom, that's a... -Cherry tree. -No, what's that? A... | 0:37:39 | 0:37:43
-That's a, um... -Flower. -I had one of those in my garden. | 0:37:43 | 0:37:46
It's a big thingy tree. It's a... I'm a member of the RHS as well. | 0:37:46 | 0:37:50
-That's a, um... -You're right, now. | 0:37:50 | 0:37:52
-That's a, um... -Chestnut. | 0:37:52 | 0:37:55
It's not a chestnut! It's plainly not a chestnut is it? | 0:37:55 | 0:37:58
-They're not conkers, are they? -Magnolia. | 0:37:58 | 0:38:00
Magnolia - thank you very much! | 0:38:00 | 0:38:02
That's what it is! I might be a bit rusty on my horticulture, | 0:38:02 | 0:38:06
but one thing I do know - if you spend enough time in Wales, | 0:38:06 | 0:38:09
sooner or later, you're going to find a leak. | 0:38:09 | 0:38:12
-NICK LAUGHS -That's mains, that is. | 0:38:12 | 0:38:15
That's coming out hard, isn't it? | 0:38:15 | 0:38:17
Try one of the stopcocks at the front. | 0:38:17 | 0:38:20
-How's that? -That's it. What was that you turned off? | 0:38:23 | 0:38:27
-The stopcock under the hedge. -The old mains? -The old mains. | 0:38:27 | 0:38:32
Well found, mate. | 0:38:32 | 0:38:34
Luckily, we've got the local water board on tap | 0:38:34 | 0:38:37
and they've turned up with some very high-tech gear. | 0:38:37 | 0:38:40
He wants to have a look at it with his listening stick. | 0:38:40 | 0:38:43
-Look with your listening stick? -Yeah, that's a listening stick. | 0:38:43 | 0:38:46
Have you seen one of those before? | 0:38:46 | 0:38:48
Yeah, last time we had a broken main. Let me see if it works. | 0:38:48 | 0:38:51
-Anything going on? -Rubbish. | 0:38:54 | 0:38:56
No, I think you've got about four days left in you. | 0:38:56 | 0:38:58
Want to have a look? Go and have a listen? | 0:38:58 | 0:39:00
Let's find out which one is back live | 0:39:00 | 0:39:02
and then we can probably get it disconnected. | 0:39:02 | 0:39:04
Ain't it lovely to see a bit of old-fashioned business | 0:39:04 | 0:39:06
going on there? Upstairs, our trades are really cracking on. | 0:39:06 | 0:39:09
Mind out, there's tools everywhere. Look in there. | 0:39:09 | 0:39:11
The bathroom's got some tiles on in there. It's starting to take shape. | 0:39:11 | 0:39:14
That's the babies' room. Poke yourself through there, | 0:39:14 | 0:39:17
you can see there's some paper on. | 0:39:17 | 0:39:19
The garden has been a lot more work than we first thought, | 0:39:19 | 0:39:22
but we are getting there. | 0:39:22 | 0:39:24
Which means it must be the perfect time for Gabby to decide | 0:39:24 | 0:39:27
to paint all the fences a different colour, which goes down a storm. | 0:39:27 | 0:39:30
Can you not see the amount of other work that's got to be done? | 0:39:32 | 0:39:35
All the fences have got to be finished, all the turfing, | 0:39:35 | 0:39:37
-all the planting. -We've got loads... | 0:39:37 | 0:39:39
You've just put another half a day on it by painting the fence | 0:39:39 | 0:39:42
-that didn't need to be done. -I'm not taking away your landscapers. | 0:39:42 | 0:39:45
We've got decorators here, specifically to do this. | 0:39:45 | 0:39:48
We've got the correct paint with the proper spec and they're doing it. | 0:39:48 | 0:39:51
This is what puts the job over, is stuff like this. | 0:39:51 | 0:39:54
He's very emotional, isn't he? | 0:39:54 | 0:39:56
I think everyone needs to cool off a bit | 0:39:56 | 0:39:58
so, while gabby's team plough on with the fence... | 0:39:58 | 0:40:01
Black, really? Black? | 0:40:01 | 0:40:02
..the boys are meeting up with Rob. | 0:40:02 | 0:40:04
Since becoming a full-time carer and dad to twins, | 0:40:04 | 0:40:08
Rob has had precious little time to himself, | 0:40:08 | 0:40:11
so we've organised a boys' treat out. | 0:40:11 | 0:40:13
-Boo! -His wife gets that every morning! | 0:40:13 | 0:40:16
Well, I say treat - kayaking on the River Wye. | 0:40:16 | 0:40:18
-How do you feel? Confident? -No, not really, no. | 0:40:18 | 0:40:22
It looks like Jules has drawn the short straw - Billy. | 0:40:22 | 0:40:27
JULES MOUTHS | 0:40:27 | 0:40:29
-Whoa, whoa! -Hey-hey! -Whoa! | 0:40:29 | 0:40:33
-Hold on, boys. -He saved it, mate, he saved it. | 0:40:33 | 0:40:37
Here we go - the point of no return. | 0:40:41 | 0:40:44
LAUGHTER | 0:40:56 | 0:40:59
-Oh, my God! -It was planned. -You all right? | 0:41:01 | 0:41:04
-We went right through the middle there. -I know, we saw you. | 0:41:04 | 0:41:08
If you wanted to wake up very quickly, go canoeing. | 0:41:08 | 0:41:12
-Enjoy yourself? -This is lovely, yeah. It's been lovely. | 0:41:12 | 0:41:15
I feel guilty though. I feel a bit guilty. | 0:41:15 | 0:41:17
That's all back there when you get back there. | 0:41:17 | 0:41:19
This is now, just a little bit for you, do you know what I mean? | 0:41:19 | 0:41:22
-MARK: -You've got put positive stuff in to get positive stuff out. | 0:41:22 | 0:41:25
You need that in life, just to be able to bounce back and hit hard. | 0:41:25 | 0:41:27
-Yeah, you've earnt it. -Thanks, man, thank you. | 0:41:27 | 0:41:30
Billy and Jules have got to come down next. | 0:41:30 | 0:41:32
Here they come, here they come! | 0:41:35 | 0:41:37
Whoa-oa! Yay! Ha-ha! | 0:41:42 | 0:41:46
-Whoo! -Come on, boy! | 0:41:46 | 0:41:50
We're getting out here. Swim! | 0:41:50 | 0:41:53
-Over this way, Bill. Come here! -Swim, Jules! | 0:41:53 | 0:41:57
We'll see you back at Monmouth! | 0:41:57 | 0:41:59
Right, it's the final push. | 0:42:07 | 0:42:09
The decking's going down, the turf's arrived, | 0:42:09 | 0:42:11
so it's full steam ahead to get the garden finished. | 0:42:11 | 0:42:14
But the jury's out on Gabby's fence. | 0:42:17 | 0:42:20
-They've painted the fence black! -I know. -Dear me. -You don't like it? | 0:42:20 | 0:42:25
-But it's the colour of death. -THEY LAUGH | 0:42:25 | 0:42:28
-It's awful. -Do you not like it? -No, no, not at all. | 0:42:28 | 0:42:31
-Maybe you should have an interview with our designers. -I'm off! | 0:42:31 | 0:42:34
THEY LAUGH | 0:42:34 | 0:42:37
Third person has just come up to me and gone, | 0:42:37 | 0:42:40
-"Why did you paint the fence black?" -Cos it's going to look amazing. | 0:42:40 | 0:42:43
They think it looks horrible. | 0:42:43 | 0:42:45
Hands up how many people don't like the black fence. | 0:42:45 | 0:42:48
-No, come on! -Everyone. | 0:42:48 | 0:42:50
-Nobody likes it, Gabby. -Darling, it's magnificent. | 0:42:50 | 0:42:53
It makes green look incredible. | 0:42:53 | 0:42:55
It's an eyeliner for the garden, darling. It'll look magnificent. | 0:42:55 | 0:42:58
Imagine me with no eyeliner on, how horrific that would look. | 0:42:58 | 0:43:03
-Trust me, it's not good. -I think you're being very harsh on yourself. | 0:43:03 | 0:43:07
-No, I'm not, really. -No, you are. | 0:43:07 | 0:43:08
It's not just eyeliner, it's all the other things - | 0:43:08 | 0:43:10
the base, lipstick and everything. It's, er... | 0:43:10 | 0:43:13
'Come on, everybody! What brother hasn't been strangled | 0:43:15 | 0:43:18
'by his little sister at some stage? | 0:43:18 | 0:43:20
'We're all just one big happy family really. | 0:43:20 | 0:43:22
'I never thought I'd say this, but the garden's almost done. | 0:43:22 | 0:43:25
'We put in a special little feature for Charlotte - | 0:43:25 | 0:43:28
'a central rail to the stone steps.' | 0:43:28 | 0:43:30
It works either way, having this rail in the middle. | 0:43:30 | 0:43:33
If it's the left side, she can come down with her strong side | 0:43:33 | 0:43:35
and because we put it in the middle, she can actually go up | 0:43:35 | 0:43:38
on her strong side and that works the other way round as well, | 0:43:38 | 0:43:40
if her right side's the strong side. | 0:43:40 | 0:43:42
So, this stairwell in and out of the garden | 0:43:42 | 0:43:44
becomes part of her physiotherapy, which is kind of cool. | 0:43:44 | 0:43:47
That's beautiful. This has been made for us | 0:43:47 | 0:43:49
by a local artisan. Fantastic, isn't it? | 0:43:49 | 0:43:51
And to be honest, I've just seen the fence | 0:43:51 | 0:43:53
and look how the blossom colour pink is kicking more | 0:43:53 | 0:43:56
because of the black fence that's in front of it. | 0:43:56 | 0:43:58
And I was arguing about the black fence. | 0:43:58 | 0:44:00
That kind of works, doesn't it? I like it very much, actually. | 0:44:00 | 0:44:04
It's a mad dash to the finish line. | 0:44:07 | 0:44:08
It's been a tough one, to be honest, | 0:44:08 | 0:44:10
but we're almost there and it feels good. | 0:44:10 | 0:44:13
-How's it been working with everyone here then? -Wonderful. | 0:44:13 | 0:44:16
-Yeah, really good. -Why? -Why? -You've got to tell people why | 0:44:16 | 0:44:19
cos people don't know what it's like, so... | 0:44:19 | 0:44:21
It's just such an eye-opener. | 0:44:21 | 0:44:23
It's great that everybody's pulled together, all the tradespeople, | 0:44:23 | 0:44:26
and everybody's hearts are in the right places | 0:44:26 | 0:44:29
and it's just an important cause, isn't it? | 0:44:29 | 0:44:31
-We came on our own and have gone away as a team. -Yeah. | 0:44:31 | 0:44:34
-That's nice. -Really good. | 0:44:34 | 0:44:36
I like that. Come on your own, go away as a team. | 0:44:36 | 0:44:39
'I think I might have that printed on a T-shirt.' | 0:44:39 | 0:44:42
We arrived in Monmouth to help a family torn apart | 0:44:50 | 0:44:52
when mum Charlotte suffered a massive stroke | 0:44:52 | 0:44:55
after giving birth to twins. | 0:44:55 | 0:44:57
It was horrific and then you're just riding a storm. | 0:44:58 | 0:45:01
Against the odds, she's making remarkable progress | 0:45:03 | 0:45:07
but their cramped little house had nowhere for help to stay, | 0:45:07 | 0:45:10
and they couldn't cope with the boys full-time without it. | 0:45:10 | 0:45:13
Is there something special you would love to give to the boys? | 0:45:14 | 0:45:17
-Yeah, together. -Just to be together. -Yeah. | 0:45:17 | 0:45:20
They were desperate to be a family again, | 0:45:20 | 0:45:23
so the local trades of Monmouth and way beyond came together | 0:45:23 | 0:45:27
to make that dream come true. | 0:45:27 | 0:45:29
And this is what they achieved. | 0:45:29 | 0:45:32
They've taken a pokey, cluttered semi and completely transformed it. | 0:45:34 | 0:45:39
The new extension has doubled the ground floor, | 0:45:41 | 0:45:44
giving the family a beautiful open-plan living-dining space, | 0:45:44 | 0:45:48
with doors out to the garden. | 0:45:48 | 0:45:51
The cramped kitchen is no more. | 0:45:54 | 0:45:56
It's been replaced by modern cabinets | 0:45:56 | 0:45:59
and bespoke concrete worktops. | 0:45:59 | 0:46:01
There's now plenty of space for Charlotte to move around safely | 0:46:01 | 0:46:04
and even a special little spot for Teddy and Fox. | 0:46:04 | 0:46:08
The old living area is now a fabulous playroom for the twins | 0:46:11 | 0:46:16
and also gives Charlotte the space she needs for her physio... | 0:46:16 | 0:46:20
..with her exercise gear hidden behind sliding doors, | 0:46:22 | 0:46:25
beautifully decorated by a local artist. | 0:46:25 | 0:46:28
Upstairs, we've created a guest bedroom, | 0:46:31 | 0:46:34
so that now Angie or a carer can stay overnight. | 0:46:34 | 0:46:38
The existing bedrooms have had such a makeover. | 0:46:38 | 0:46:41
The twins now have a proper little boys' room. | 0:46:41 | 0:46:45
The old family bathroom has been transformed | 0:46:46 | 0:46:49
into a beautiful en suite, complete with a moveable seat in the bath, | 0:46:49 | 0:46:54
so Charlotte can once again enjoy a soak. | 0:46:54 | 0:46:57
And we've added a separate wet room, | 0:46:57 | 0:47:00
which will make showering much easier for her. | 0:47:00 | 0:47:03
Finally, the old, inaccessible, sloping garden has gone. | 0:47:03 | 0:47:07
In its place, a new turf lawn, split into levels | 0:47:07 | 0:47:12
with a deck terrace that's just perfect for family time together. | 0:47:12 | 0:47:17
The stone steps are flanked by giant raised planters, | 0:47:17 | 0:47:21
ideal for Charlotte to do a spot of gardening. Very therapeutic. | 0:47:21 | 0:47:24
Yes, the mighty Monmouth trades have given the Fairlies a home | 0:47:24 | 0:47:28
where they can finally start their family life together. | 0:47:28 | 0:47:32
We needed to give you space, we needed to give you a home | 0:47:40 | 0:47:43
where you could actually spend time with your babies. | 0:47:43 | 0:47:45
Everybody's really loved doing this for you. Open your eyes. | 0:47:45 | 0:47:48
-Ooh! -Oh, my God! | 0:47:50 | 0:47:53
-Whoa! -Oh, my goodness! | 0:47:56 | 0:47:58
-That is just incredible. -You like it? -Yeah. -It's incredible. | 0:48:00 | 0:48:06
-It's incredible. -Yeah! | 0:48:06 | 0:48:08
Gabby was keen that when she came to you with a mood board, | 0:48:08 | 0:48:11
-that there were things you'd like in colours and shapes and things. -Yeah. | 0:48:11 | 0:48:15
It's just unbelievable. | 0:48:15 | 0:48:17
Everything that you do, you like to go to your left. | 0:48:21 | 0:48:23
-It's the right side that's difficult? -Yeah. | 0:48:23 | 0:48:26
-The left, you know... -That side. | 0:48:26 | 0:48:27
So, the idea is everything that you do is thought through | 0:48:27 | 0:48:30
-to make it beneficial for you. -Oh, goodness. -Oh, my goodness. | 0:48:30 | 0:48:35
-That is just, er, wow! -Oh! | 0:48:35 | 0:48:38
Yeah, a little breakfast bar at the end here. You pull out the chairs. | 0:48:38 | 0:48:42
-Ah! -That is absolutely lovely. -Ah! | 0:48:42 | 0:48:45
So, in this corner here, | 0:48:47 | 0:48:49
a little place for Fox and Teddy to hang their coats. | 0:48:49 | 0:48:51
-Ah! -That's brilliant. | 0:48:51 | 0:48:53
-Clock. Clock. -Yeah, it's a clock with the time on it. -Yeah. | 0:48:53 | 0:48:58
Just a little reminder. | 0:48:58 | 0:49:00
So, let's bring you through into your new living room area. | 0:49:03 | 0:49:07
-Oh, it's like a real home! -Yeah. | 0:49:10 | 0:49:12
Lots of room for the kids to run around in. | 0:49:12 | 0:49:15
-Ah, that's gorgeous. -Yeah. | 0:49:15 | 0:49:19
-Can you see the photos? Gorgeous. -Oh, my God! -Goodness. | 0:49:21 | 0:49:25
-Oh, my goodness. -Yeah, this is lovely. | 0:49:25 | 0:49:28
I'm speechless. It's not... It's... | 0:49:30 | 0:49:33
It's not the same place, in a good way. It's just unbelievable. | 0:49:33 | 0:49:37
I don't know how you've done it. It's beautiful, it really is. | 0:49:37 | 0:49:41
-I know it's always tough for you to form sentences. -Yeah. | 0:49:41 | 0:49:44
-And you get frustrated with it - I know that. -Yeah. | 0:49:44 | 0:49:46
But I would like to know, | 0:49:46 | 0:49:47
-can you see this making a difference for you? -Yes. | 0:49:47 | 0:49:50
I guess a big difference. | 0:49:50 | 0:49:53
-It's a new start, isn't it? -Yeah, home. -Home. -Yeah. | 0:49:53 | 0:49:57
Welcome to your new physio space. | 0:50:02 | 0:50:05
CHARLOTTE GASPS | 0:50:05 | 0:50:07
-In behind here... -Oh, my goodness. -Oh, my goodness! -That is just, er... | 0:50:09 | 0:50:14
That's perfect! | 0:50:14 | 0:50:16
CHARLOTTE LAUGHS | 0:50:16 | 0:50:17
-So, what do you think? -Oh, amazing! -Speechless. | 0:50:17 | 0:50:21
Speechless, yeah. | 0:50:22 | 0:50:24
-Is this a space in which you can improve? -Yeah. | 0:50:24 | 0:50:28
-Cos you can do speech and language here. -Yeah. -Got the exercises. | 0:50:28 | 0:50:33
It's just amazing. | 0:50:33 | 0:50:34
Did you want to follow me to see the upstairs? | 0:50:36 | 0:50:38
Your new room. | 0:50:43 | 0:50:44
-Oh! Wow, that is absolutely brilliant! -Yes. | 0:50:46 | 0:50:51
-What do you think, my love? -Yeah! -Yeah. | 0:50:51 | 0:50:54
But probably more important is going to be this room for you. | 0:50:54 | 0:50:58
THEY GASP | 0:51:00 | 0:51:02
-Oh, my goodness! -It is... Wow! | 0:51:02 | 0:51:06
-Down to your right, in the bath, is a self-raising chair. -Yeah. | 0:51:06 | 0:51:09
It will raise up and swing round | 0:51:09 | 0:51:11
so you can get yourself in and out of the bath, Char. | 0:51:11 | 0:51:13
-Thank you! -That is brilliant. | 0:51:13 | 0:51:16
-Want to see your boys' bedroom? -Yes. | 0:51:16 | 0:51:18
Oh, my God. | 0:51:25 | 0:51:27
-Oh, "Fox" and "Teddy". -Ah! | 0:51:27 | 0:51:31
-So, obviously named for you, so you don't get mixed up. -Yeah. | 0:51:31 | 0:51:34
-Teddy and Fox, yeah. -Ah! -Proper little boys' room, isn't it? | 0:51:34 | 0:51:38
-I know! -Yeah. It's a proper little nursery. It's lovely. | 0:51:38 | 0:51:42
Because of the situation that you're in, it was really important - | 0:51:42 | 0:51:45
this was why we did the two-storey extension - | 0:51:45 | 0:51:47
-to actually get another bedroom in somewhere. -Yeah. | 0:51:47 | 0:51:50
-Do you want to come and see that? -Yes. | 0:51:50 | 0:51:52
-Oh, that is incredible. -Beautiful, isn't it? -Yeah. -Thank you. | 0:51:59 | 0:52:03
So, from today, you can move in, | 0:52:03 | 0:52:07
you can have the boys stay in the same house as you. | 0:52:07 | 0:52:10
Yeah, it's, um, it's above and beyond anything I could have, | 0:52:10 | 0:52:14
or WE could have probably thought or imagined. | 0:52:14 | 0:52:17
-It is perfect, for want of a better word. -Perfect. | 0:52:17 | 0:52:22
-Really? -It's a home, it's a real home, isn't it? -Yeah. | 0:52:22 | 0:52:24
Well, why don't we get the family in then, shall we? | 0:52:24 | 0:52:27
Wow! | 0:52:32 | 0:52:34 | |
-Hey. -Poppet. -There. | 0:52:34 | 0:52:36
Poppet. Look, this is your new home. | 0:52:38 | 0:52:42
-It's absolutely fantastic. -I know. | 0:52:44 | 0:52:47
-Tissue. -Thank you, Char. You're looking after ME now. -Yeah. | 0:52:49 | 0:52:54
Isn't this lovely? Auntie Angie's silly, eh? | 0:52:54 | 0:52:59
Is she silly? Yes. | 0:52:59 | 0:53:01
-It's amazing. -I know. -Wow! | 0:53:01 | 0:53:06
I have got another surprise for you downstairs. | 0:53:06 | 0:53:08
THEY GASP | 0:53:18 | 0:53:19
-Oh! -Oh, my God! | 0:53:19 | 0:53:23
It's kind of cool, isn't it? Look at that! | 0:53:23 | 0:53:26
Come on, poppet. | 0:53:26 | 0:53:28
-Darling. -Goodness me! | 0:53:28 | 0:53:31
-Are you sure this is the right address, my love? -I know! | 0:53:33 | 0:53:36
Did you know you had such an amazing view? | 0:53:36 | 0:53:38
-And now it's framed with a beautiful garden. -Yeah. | 0:53:38 | 0:53:40
-If you come round this side, Char. -OK. -You can then use the rail. -Ah. | 0:53:43 | 0:53:47
Brilliant! | 0:53:47 | 0:53:48
This is your new physio, Char. | 0:53:52 | 0:53:54
-Oh! -CHARLOTTE LAUGHS | 0:53:54 | 0:53:57
-Up, down, up, down the steps. -Yeah. -Yeah? -Up, down, up, down. | 0:53:57 | 0:54:00
I don't know how on earth they've done this. | 0:54:00 | 0:54:04
During the summer, this is where you come to recuperate. | 0:54:04 | 0:54:07
There's a lot of evidence that shows | 0:54:07 | 0:54:09
that if you can see the countryside, greenery, trees, | 0:54:09 | 0:54:12
-it will help with your rehabilitation. -Yeah. | 0:54:12 | 0:54:15
Walking up and down the garden, using the railings, should all help. | 0:54:15 | 0:54:18
-Yeah. Thank you. -I -didn't do it. | 0:54:18 | 0:54:22
-Isn't that lovely, though, to see your boys out in the garden? -Yeah. | 0:54:28 | 0:54:31
-Look, he's running about. -I know! -He's doing his little ducky walk. | 0:54:31 | 0:54:36
-Does it feel like a home? -Home, yes, definitely. -Yeah. It's, yeah... | 0:54:37 | 0:54:43
-It's... -Big changes? -Yeah. -Massive. -Yeah. -Bit of weight off you? | 0:54:43 | 0:54:47
-Yeah, it feels like home. -Yeah. | 0:54:47 | 0:54:49
It feels like the space is incredible and the space of... | 0:54:49 | 0:54:53
-And knowing that you'll be safe with the boys here... -Yeah. | 0:54:53 | 0:54:57
That'll be a huge weight. | 0:54:57 | 0:54:58
OK, listen, we'd like you to meet the twins, but one of them's asleep. | 0:55:11 | 0:55:15
LAUGHTER AND APPLAUSE | 0:55:15 | 0:55:19
-A new beginning? -Yes, um, beginning, yeah. | 0:55:32 | 0:55:35
And a chance for you now, finally, to spend proper time with your boys. | 0:55:35 | 0:55:40
-With boys, yes. -How do things change? | 0:55:40 | 0:55:43
Well, when Char came back to the house, um, it just wasn't... | 0:55:43 | 0:55:46
We couldn't be a family. | 0:55:46 | 0:55:48
You haven't made a house, you've made us a home, | 0:55:48 | 0:55:51
and for the first time, we can be a family together. | 0:55:51 | 0:55:55
And that wouldn't be possible without you guys - there's no way. | 0:55:55 | 0:55:58
And I've no idea what to say to all of you. There's so many. | 0:55:58 | 0:56:03
And so, from the bottom of our hearts, | 0:56:03 | 0:56:06
I want to thank each and every one of you individually | 0:56:06 | 0:56:08
for giving us a family back, which we haven't had yet. | 0:56:08 | 0:56:12
Does this take some of the pressure off? | 0:56:12 | 0:56:14
Yeah, it feels like a huge weight cos this is our base, | 0:56:14 | 0:56:17
this is our home, so it feels manageable now. | 0:56:17 | 0:56:19
-So, starting afresh from today - when we get the keys... -Yeah. | 0:56:19 | 0:56:23
LAUGHTER | 0:56:23 | 0:56:25
To be honest, the way it's been, they might be in one of the skips. | 0:56:25 | 0:56:28
-LAUGHTER -Thank you so much. | 0:56:28 | 0:56:30
APPLAUSE | 0:56:30 | 0:56:33
Thank you. | 0:56:39 | 0:56:40
How are you? | 0:56:40 | 0:56:42
-What an amazing community. -I know! | 0:56:42 | 0:56:44
As long as we don't have to sit on our knees for half an hour. | 0:56:44 | 0:56:47
Mwah, thank you. | 0:56:47 | 0:56:49
People often ask me, | 0:56:49 | 0:56:51
"Why would people come and give so much and not get paid?" | 0:56:51 | 0:56:54
It's because they're part of a community. | 0:56:54 | 0:56:56
They're doing something special. | 0:56:56 | 0:56:58
And what greater payment is there than creating a home | 0:56:58 | 0:57:01
where a mother and her twins can create that bond | 0:57:01 | 0:57:05
that they should have had when they were born | 0:57:05 | 0:57:07
and through circumstance, they couldn't? | 0:57:07 | 0:57:09
Somebody said to me in the week, | 0:57:09 | 0:57:11
"We come here alone and leave as a team." | 0:57:11 | 0:57:13
And of course, you're part of a team, you just don't know it. | 0:57:13 | 0:57:16
Your community has amazing power. | 0:57:16 | 0:57:18
Maybe you know somebody who needs your help. | 0:57:18 | 0:57:21
INDISTINGUISHABLE CHATTER | 0:57:28 | 0:57:30
Thank you. Mwah. | 0:57:30 | 0:57:32
INDISTINGUISHABLE CHATTER | 0:57:39 | 0:57:41 |
