So many young boys growing up are constantly on the go.

0:00:020:00:05

I was always wanting to do stuff,

0:00:050:00:06

pretty much, like, from birth, really.

0:00:060:00:08

My mum told me, when I was three months old, I started swimming.

0:00:090:00:12

Then, when I was about four, I started tag rugby.

0:00:130:00:15

And probably about age nine, I went into athletics.

0:00:160:00:18

Commitment-wise, I would say from day one when he played sport,

0:00:190:00:23

"If I'm going to play sport, I'm going to do it the best I can."

0:00:230:00:25

But no-one knows what fate has in store for them.

0:00:270:00:29

I had three strokes in the space of five months.

0:00:310:00:34

He wasn't speaking.

0:00:360:00:37

He wasn't swallowing.

0:00:380:00:39

He wasn't sitting up on his own.

0:00:400:00:43

That initial time,

0:00:430:00:44

you're wondering quite what you're going to be left of him.

0:00:440:00:47

When adversity strikes, the real challenge is how to move on.

0:00:480:00:51

Tough for even the strongest families.

0:00:520:00:55

It upsets me, because I feel like we've failed him,

0:00:560:00:59

because we should be able to provide for our own son.

0:00:590:01:02

But these battles don't need to be fought alone.

0:01:040:01:07

The cream of Cheltenham's trades are stepping up to help this young man

0:01:100:01:14

gain his independence with a brand-new home.

0:01:140:01:17

They'll be working around the clock

0:01:180:01:20

on one of our most ambitious builds to date.

0:01:200:01:22

This is the busiest I've ever known DIY SOS Big Build.

0:01:230:01:27

That house could quite easily fall down.

0:01:280:01:30

When do they tear the roof off?

0:01:300:01:32

I thought we were only supposed to be patching in the roof.

0:01:320:01:35

At some stage, mate,

0:01:350:01:36

we've got to stop taking things out and start putting things in.

0:01:360:01:39

'Let's just hope we haven't bitten off more than we can chew.'

0:01:410:01:44

-I didn't expect it to be like this.

-You deserve this.

0:01:450:01:47

And everybody working on it's been really chuffed to build it for you.

0:01:470:01:51

All the usual suspects are here,

0:01:510:01:52

including the designer this week, Shaun Clarkson.

0:01:520:01:55

But, as usual, we only have nine days to get the job done

0:01:550:01:58

and where are we going to find...?

0:01:580:01:59

Mate, I'm going to have to stop you there.

0:01:590:02:01

You always say that.

0:02:010:02:02

You know there's going to be a massive group of people

0:02:020:02:04

-stood over there.

-Let's get to them then.

0:02:040:02:06

This is DIY SOS: The Big Build!

0:02:060:02:08

THEY CHEER AND APPLAUD

0:02:080:02:12

So, I'm going to write, "My name is Scott Jones and I'm 17."

0:02:250:02:28

Some of my writing, I write right to left, so it's backwards.

0:02:300:02:34

At the age of 11, this remarkable young lad suffered a series

0:02:340:02:37

of strokes that took a severe toll on his mind and his body.

0:02:370:02:41

That's Scott's writing, reflected in the mirror so you can read it.

0:02:450:02:48

So, they think this occurred due to when my brain was trying to repair

0:02:490:02:52

itself, which is common with brain injuries in children.

0:02:520:02:54

Scott lives in Swindon Village, Cheltenham, with mum Liz

0:02:550:02:59

and dad Gary, a factory worker, who have been together for 37 years.

0:02:590:03:04

We met at school and we've been together ever since,

0:03:040:03:07

since 1978, December.

0:03:070:03:08

Got married in July '84.

0:03:100:03:12

After 14 years, the couple finally had Scott in 1998.

0:03:140:03:18

Scott enjoyed an active and sporty life, but when he was ten,

0:03:200:03:24

he started to suffer unusual symptoms.

0:03:240:03:26

We spent the summer down in Cornwall with my family.

0:03:280:03:30

In and out of the water the whole time.

0:03:300:03:32

And he started to get this discharge in his ear,

0:03:330:03:35

and I thought it was swimmer's ear.

0:03:350:03:38

So, we went to the doctors.

0:03:380:03:39

He just looked at it and said, "Yeah, I know what that is."

0:03:390:03:42

And it was a cholesteatoma.

0:03:420:03:44

A cholesteatoma is an abnormal growth inside the ear.

0:03:460:03:51

Left untreated, it can continue to grow and damage the brain.

0:03:510:03:55

Extracting the tumour normally consists of two operations.

0:03:560:04:00

One to take it out, then the other one, up to a year later,

0:04:000:04:03

to repair any potential damage.

0:04:030:04:05

And it was the second one which he wasn't right afterwards.

0:04:080:04:12

-He just didn't come round as much as I'd expected him to, did he?

-No.

0:04:130:04:18

It took a couple of days. He wasn't himself.

0:04:180:04:20

And we took him home.

0:04:200:04:21

And that day he went to school, and then he just said he felt

0:04:210:04:24

a pop in his ear and woke up with his head on the desk

0:04:240:04:26

and that's all we knew, wasn't it?

0:04:260:04:28

And at this point, I was having a stroke, and I didn't know.

0:04:290:04:32

We just couldn't find any reason for one, you know,

0:04:330:04:35

they couldn't find a bleed.

0:04:350:04:36

And so it was, sort of, one of those things where "We'll treat him,

0:04:360:04:39

"but we don't know exactly what we're treating," I suppose.

0:04:390:04:41

Over the next five months,

0:04:430:04:44

Scott had two more strokes that severely affected his mobility.

0:04:440:04:48

That initial time,

0:04:500:04:51

you're wondering quite what you're going to be left of him.

0:04:510:04:54

But Scott fought back to remain active,

0:04:540:04:57

competing in the shot put at both able-bodied and disabled events,

0:04:570:05:01

then narrowly missing out on selection for the 2012 Paralympics.

0:05:010:05:05

However, seizures caused his condition to worsen,

0:05:070:05:10

and in autumn 2013, paralysed from the chest down,

0:05:100:05:14

Scott became a full-time wheelchair user.

0:05:140:05:16

These enormous setbacks haven't stopped Scott.

0:05:190:05:21

His love of sport is undimmed.

0:05:210:05:24

These are both gold medals that I won

0:05:250:05:26

at my first international outside of the UK.

0:05:260:05:29

Gold in the C2 shot put F32

0:05:290:05:31

and gold in the C2 shot put F32, 52 and 54.

0:05:310:05:36

He topped this by winning gold at the disabled World Championships

0:05:370:05:40

in 2013, setting a world record in the process.

0:05:400:05:44

When he stood up on that rostrum in Lyon, that was it.

0:05:460:05:48

That was it for me.

0:05:500:05:51

But an injury to his throwing arm ended his shot put career.

0:05:520:05:56

Undeterred, Scott took up rowing instead

0:05:560:05:58

and has since made the GB development squad.

0:05:580:06:01

ROWING MACHINE CHAINS MOVE

0:06:020:06:04

He's fought every step of the way,

0:06:070:06:09

but he's fighting a losing battle at home,

0:06:090:06:12

which was built in the 1960s without disabled use in mind.

0:06:120:06:15

So, as well as the narrow doors that he can barely fit through,

0:06:160:06:20

there's a cramped kitchen that he can only use with his parents there,

0:06:200:06:23

which is a massive blow for a lad that loves to cook on his own.

0:06:230:06:26

I really want to cook, but I'm not allowed to,

0:06:270:06:29

due to the oven's up here and the hobs are up here.

0:06:290:06:32

I can't see them in the chair.

0:06:320:06:33

And if he wants a shower, well, that involves a trip to the gym

0:06:340:06:37

or the hospital, because the only one in the house is upstairs.

0:06:370:06:41

There's a toilet in the corner of a cramped utility room

0:06:420:06:45

on the ground floor,

0:06:450:06:46

but it's difficult to get to.

0:06:460:06:47

'I don't really want to be crawling round,

0:06:490:06:50

'especially when I've got friends round.

0:06:500:06:52

'You want to be able to be independent. Everyone does.

0:06:520:06:54

'But at the same time, I can't be my own person'

0:06:540:06:56

due to the house isn't adapted.

0:06:560:06:57

It's a claustrophobic existence for Scott throughout the house.

0:06:590:07:02

The garden's a no-go area.

0:07:020:07:04

He's got a lovely summerhouse that he had

0:07:050:07:07

where his friends used to meet.

0:07:070:07:09

He can't get down there.

0:07:090:07:10

Sometimes you see him wistfully looking down there, thinking,

0:07:100:07:13

-"Oh..."

-"I could escape down there."

-Yeah.

0:07:130:07:15

There used to be his little place just to go and play.

0:07:150:07:17

'He is a brave young man who just wants some freedom,

0:07:180:07:22

'which this house won't allow.

0:07:220:07:24

'I think this champion deserves a break, don't you?'

0:07:240:07:27

If I read through all this,

0:07:270:07:29

it's actually about you having independence, isn't it?

0:07:290:07:32

Cos you're at the stage where you want to be doing stuff for yourself,

0:07:320:07:34

and you don't want your mum and dad...

0:07:340:07:36

I've only got about six months till I'm 18,

0:07:360:07:38

so I'd rather have it to get myself sorted for independence.

0:07:380:07:40

I don't really want parents around me all the time

0:07:400:07:42

when I'm trying to do stuff.

0:07:420:07:43

-Although you do love them a lot.

-Oh, I love them and all that.

-Of course, yeah, yeah.

0:07:430:07:46

But sometimes I want my own space to be able to do my own thing.

0:07:460:07:49

Yeah, and I think that's not unusual for an 18-year-old,

0:07:490:07:51

-and I think every 18-year-old feels that way.

-Yeah.

0:07:510:07:53

You're not a lad that has let the stuff get in your way.

0:07:530:07:56

And you're busy having a go and fighting against everything,

0:07:560:07:59

and so these guys are going to come in and try sort something out

0:07:590:08:01

for you, mate, and give you what you need.

0:08:010:08:04

This is getting to you a bit, isn't it?

0:08:040:08:06

Thank you.

0:08:070:08:08

Tradesmen from Cheltenham and its surrounds

0:08:110:08:13

have answered our call for help.

0:08:130:08:15

And what a turnout.

0:08:150:08:17

They all have one goal in mind - to make this house work.

0:08:170:08:20

APPLAUSE

0:08:240:08:28

OK, so this is the family we're working for today.

0:08:330:08:35

We always like you to get an opportunity to meet the client.

0:08:350:08:38

What he wants is independence,

0:08:380:08:39

and he's fought so hard to be an athlete

0:08:390:08:42

and he never shies away, it's fair to say,

0:08:420:08:44

from any of the training or any of the difficulties

0:08:440:08:46

or the physical pain of what you're doing,

0:08:460:08:48

-but you're finding this quite difficult to do by comparison, aren't you?

-Yeah.

0:08:480:08:51

To come out and say hello to people.

0:08:510:08:52

Thank you.

0:08:530:08:55

HE SOBS

0:08:550:08:56

We'd just like to say thank you to everyone for turning up for Scott.

0:08:560:08:59

It is overwhelming and I can see why.

0:09:000:09:03

He is ten days away from a bit of independence.

0:09:030:09:06

Right, let's get you underway, then.

0:09:060:09:08

-See you later, mate.

-Thank you.

0:09:090:09:11

APPLAUSE

0:09:110:09:13

'Right, with the family on their way, it's time to get cracking.

0:09:160:09:20

'We have the standard nine days to complete what looks on paper

0:09:200:09:22

'like a rather ambitious build.

0:09:220:09:24

'So, as always, we'll have our work cut out.'

0:09:240:09:26

I want everything from the back here from that staircase all taken out,

0:09:270:09:31

all those walls down.

0:09:310:09:32

Yeah.

0:09:320:09:33

As you can see, our scaffold's up and some kindly gents have

0:09:330:09:36

already laid the foundations for our timber frame extension

0:09:360:09:40

so we don't have to stand around waiting for the concrete to dry.

0:09:400:09:42

Speaking of which...

0:09:430:09:44

..here is our side extension.

0:09:450:09:47

It's early, which is great news, as we've got lots to do.

0:09:470:09:50

The plan is to start this build from scratch,

0:09:540:09:56

and the only way to get to scratch is to smash everything up.

0:09:560:10:00

MUSIC: Out Of The Black by Royal Blood

0:10:010:10:06

HAMMERS THUD AND SMASH

0:10:060:10:07

'I'm not going to pretend we don't love this bit.

0:10:070:10:09

'What better way of a load of blokes bonding first thing in the morning?'

0:10:090:10:12

People say that there aren't artisans around any more.

0:10:130:10:17

'But as random bits of house flood out and get piled higgledy-piggledy

0:10:250:10:28

'in the skip, it starts to make my blood boil.'

0:10:280:10:31

These skips aren't airtight.

0:10:340:10:35

Knowlesy's going to be, "Oh, my God."

0:10:350:10:37

We'll step away.

0:10:370:10:38

A skip is a very expensive piece of kit.

0:10:400:10:41

And unless you pack them so that you can get them airtight,

0:10:410:10:44

you're wasting half your skip.

0:10:440:10:45

TWEETING NOTIFICATION

0:10:450:10:46

So, I get people tweeting me from all over the country now,

0:10:460:10:49

sending me pictures of their skips that are airtight.

0:10:490:10:51

There you go. You see, now look at the space all of a sudden.

0:10:530:10:56

Look at this.

0:10:560:10:57

'The house is cleared in no time,

0:11:000:11:01

'which I like to think owes a little to my skipology.

0:11:010:11:04

'But we've done such a great job of dismantling it,

0:11:040:11:06

'I'm trying to work out how it's still standing.

0:11:060:11:08

'Let me explain.'

0:11:090:11:10

So, here's our problem,

0:11:120:11:14

that that's our original house,

0:11:140:11:15

and we've taken all the internal walls out that hold it apart.

0:11:150:11:18

And what happens is, the danger is that it'll do that.

0:11:180:11:20

That house could quite easily fall down.

0:11:210:11:23

And these people just give us their door keys and head off and say,

0:11:230:11:26

"Yeah, thanks very much for sorting the house out."

0:11:260:11:29

'Yeah, we know what were doing, don't we?

0:11:290:11:31

'The short-term solution to keeping it up are acrow props,

0:11:310:11:34

'but the long-term one is rebuilding it, and for that we need a plan.

0:11:340:11:37

'Designer!

0:11:370:11:38

'This week we have a brand-new victim, er, designer.

0:11:410:11:43

'More like a fashion victim, really.'

0:11:430:11:45

-What colour socks have you got on?

-What colour socks have you got on?

0:11:470:11:50

-Orange, of course.

-Orange?

-Orange.

-Orange.

0:11:500:11:51

Don't ask him about his underpants.

0:11:510:11:53

'Shaun Clarkson has an international reputation for avant-garde design,

0:11:530:11:57

'working with both commercial and residential properties.

0:11:570:12:00

'That's very fancy, isn't it?

0:12:000:12:02

'Who knows what this orange opulentist is going to come up with

0:12:020:12:06

'when he's let loose on a three-bed in Swindon Village?'

0:12:060:12:09

-Hello, Shaun.

-Hello, nice to meet you.

-Yeah.

0:12:100:12:12

-Welcome to the show.

-Thank you very much.

0:12:120:12:13

I've had a word with the boys already on this particular outfit.

0:12:130:12:16

-And what do they say?

-They think you got dressed in the dark.

0:12:160:12:18

-Yes, I still think I'm 23.

-THEY LAUGH

0:12:180:12:20

-Is that what the 23-year-olds are wearing at the moment?

-I think so, yes.

0:12:200:12:23

Wait till the colours go on the wall.

0:12:230:12:25

The outfit reflects the colours.

0:12:250:12:26

Well, we did say at least one thing, one of my big bugbears

0:12:260:12:28

is that designers are constantly putting grey on the walls.

0:12:280:12:31

-I presume we're not having any grey on the walls?

-No.

0:12:310:12:33

I've got a bit of an issue about grey as well, actually.

0:12:330:12:35

I think it's overused. It's a great foil for other colours.

0:12:350:12:39

SHAUN LAUGHS

0:12:390:12:40

Already I like this man.

0:12:400:12:41

'And I like the look of the plan, as well.

0:12:410:12:44

'The ground floor as we currently know it will no longer exist.

0:12:450:12:48

'Only the living room stays put.

0:12:480:12:50

'The old dining room makes way for a modified kitchen,

0:12:500:12:53

'with lower worktops and appliances

0:12:530:12:54

'that Scott, who loves to cook, can reach.

0:12:540:12:57

'The biggest change is the stairs,

0:12:580:12:59

'which will now face the front of the house.

0:12:590:13:01

'There's lots more space downstairs, and with widened doorways,

0:13:010:13:04

'Scott will have the freedom to move around.

0:13:040:13:06

'All this extra space is because of our side extension,

0:13:070:13:10

'which will house a storage room for Scott's chairs

0:13:100:13:13

'and, most importantly, a new bedroom,

0:13:130:13:15

'with ensuite wet room so he'll no longer need to shower

0:13:150:13:18

'at the hospital or gym.

0:13:180:13:20

'Upstairs, the new stairs will give us a bigger landing

0:13:200:13:23

'and enough space to build a sewing room for Liz

0:13:230:13:26

'And the bedroom, spare room and master bedroom

0:13:260:13:29

'will all be brand spanking new.'

0:13:290:13:31

From a design point of view,

0:13:320:13:34

there needs to be a story throughout the house that all fits together.

0:13:340:13:37

'OK, so the jury may be out on his dress sense,

0:13:370:13:40

'but I like his perspective.

0:13:400:13:41

'Bringing Shaun's vision to life out back is a garden designer

0:13:440:13:46

'who may have overlooked something.'

0:13:460:13:49

-I notice there's a digger.

-There is a digger, yeah.

0:13:500:13:52

We've got some clearing to do. We're taking all the turf off.

0:13:520:13:55

But once we've built our extension...

0:13:550:13:57

Yeah, it's all going to have to stay in there,

0:13:570:13:59

so we're going to have to...

0:13:590:14:00

-Make a feature of the digger. Nice.

-No, no.

0:14:000:14:02

THEY LAUGH

0:14:020:14:03

-Not of the digger.

-Looks good(!)

0:14:030:14:04

Hopefully we'll get the digger back out.

0:14:040:14:06

-All right, well, I'd better think about that.

-OK.

0:14:060:14:09

'With the house now deemed stable, Billy's electricians are in.

0:14:100:14:14

'But the man himself is sporting an injury.'

0:14:140:14:16

I call it white finger.

0:14:160:14:18

When you've done all your tendons through the years of chiselling

0:14:180:14:21

and this vibration and it's just damaged that.

0:14:210:14:25

'Use your left hand for a while. I find that often helps.

0:14:250:14:28

'I think we're going to regret letting Julian loose

0:14:300:14:32

'on that digger in the garden.'

0:14:320:14:33

Dust?

0:14:340:14:35

So, basically, considering we're not doing much of the garden,

0:14:350:14:38

-they're doing quite a lot.

-Yeah.

0:14:380:14:39

From here, there's nothing left of the garden.

0:14:390:14:41

'The problem is you put Julian in one of those machines

0:14:430:14:45

'and he gets digger-happy.'

0:14:450:14:47

Rhubarb!

0:14:480:14:49

Oh!

0:14:550:14:56

Sugar! Plenty of sugar!

0:14:570:14:58

I'll tell you what, we'll keep that.

0:14:580:15:01

Pick it all, we'll have a rhubarb crumble tonight.

0:15:010:15:03

'Isn't it poisonous raw? I'm sure it is.'

0:15:040:15:06

-You have devastated our garden.

-I haven't, he has.

0:15:080:15:11

She told me to do it. I'm scared of her.

0:15:110:15:13

-AMERICAN ACCENT:

-She's small, but she's wild.

0:15:130:15:15

Small but wild!

0:15:150:15:17

Well, all I can say is good luck, I hope you get finished on time.

0:15:170:15:20

'Ignore him, honestly. Gardens take time to come together.

0:15:210:15:24

'Besides, you have a good-looking plan.

0:15:240:15:26

'There'll be a brand-new patio that's flush with the inside

0:15:280:15:31

'so Scott can get out there.

0:15:310:15:33

'We're laying new turf, with new flowers around the borders

0:15:330:15:35

'for Scott's mum Liz, who's a keen gardener.

0:15:350:15:38

'The summer house stays for its sentimental value.

0:15:380:15:41

'Winding down throughout is a resin bound gravel path,

0:15:410:15:44

'which will let Scott into the garden

0:15:440:15:46

'for the first time in five years.

0:15:460:15:48

'The path leads down to a brand-new workout room for Scott,

0:15:480:15:51

'so no more twice-daily trips to the gym with Mum.

0:15:510:15:55

'It's brilliant.

0:15:550:15:56

'Four hours in and the framework for the side extension

0:15:570:15:59

'is up in record time.

0:15:590:16:01

'What they really need is for me to get in there and slow them down.'

0:16:020:16:05

You've kind of almost built it already.

0:16:070:16:08

-You've got the two ends on.

-Yeah.

0:16:080:16:10

-Yeah.

-It's all right?

-Yeah, it's going well.

0:16:100:16:11

-Where do you want to be by the end of today?

-Finished.

0:16:110:16:14

-Truro's a long way to drive back.

-You're not from Truro.

0:16:140:16:16

-You're Cornish boys?

-Yeah.

-Cornish boys.

0:16:180:16:20

Very welcome - and join us.

0:16:200:16:22

That's a long way to come.

0:16:220:16:24

How come you've come out all the way up here to do this, then?

0:16:240:16:26

We're a small family business down in Cornwall, we got the call,

0:16:260:16:29

so we decided we'd come up and...

0:16:290:16:30

-You fancied having a go?

-Yeah.

0:16:300:16:32

-Is it what you expected to be?

-Yeah. It's good. I like it.

-It's fun.

0:16:320:16:35

'Amazing.

0:16:360:16:37

'That's a 400-mile round trip to install an extension

0:16:370:16:40

'for nothing other than the benefit to Scott.

0:16:400:16:42

'So, whilst they get on with it,

0:16:430:16:44

'Scott's about to put in a shift of his own down at the gym.

0:16:440:16:47

'Yes, his strict training regime has to continue

0:16:470:16:50

'regardless of what's going on at the house.'

0:16:500:16:53

We're off to the University Of Gloucestershire.

0:16:540:16:56

I'm going to head on to the gym,

0:16:560:16:57

so it's going to be indoor rowing today.

0:16:570:16:59

I started rowing in November for recreational fun

0:16:590:17:03

and then I went to the British Indoor Championships

0:17:030:17:05

and came second in the arms-only class.

0:17:050:17:08

Then after that, I started to take it a lot more seriously.

0:17:080:17:10

At the moment, because he's not at college, I'm taking him every day.

0:17:120:17:16

This will be the first of two trips here today,

0:17:170:17:20

and they are essential to maintain Scott's progress.

0:17:200:17:23

He throws himself into everything.

0:17:250:17:27

I think if he sets his mind to it, he's got a goal, he will go for it.

0:17:270:17:30

And we've seen that in his athletics.

0:17:300:17:32

And we're now seeing it in his rowing.

0:17:320:17:34

It's nice to see the way that he is improving,

0:17:350:17:38

and he's enjoying it, as well.

0:17:380:17:40

'If I hadn't had sport, then I wouldn't be where I am now.

0:17:410:17:44

'And the reason I carry on is I want a Paralympic gold medal.

0:17:440:17:47

'There's no doubts about that.

0:17:470:17:48

'If I won a Paralympic gold, I'd want a second one'

0:17:480:17:51

to prove I've done it,

0:17:510:17:52

and I'd want a third one and it just carries on going.

0:17:520:17:54

What an amazing lad.

0:17:550:17:57

Things are looking sturdier on-site,

0:17:590:18:01

which is more than I can say for our Jurassic spark.

0:18:010:18:03

-That can hurt cos of pressure there.

-But here?

-Yes! There.

0:18:050:18:08

-How old are you now?

-I'm going on a bit. Yeah.

0:18:080:18:11

There comes a time, Bill, where you've just got to accept

0:18:110:18:13

-that, you know...

-What's up with you?

0:18:130:18:15

The world's caught up with you a little bit, that's all.

0:18:150:18:17

-It's, you know...

-Put me and you together.

0:18:170:18:20

-You when we first started 16 years ago.

-Yeah?

0:18:200:18:23

And put me now, I am the only one that hasn't aged.

0:18:230:18:27

There's more changing Jules, Chris and yourself...

0:18:270:18:29

I'll tell you what, here's a picture of Jules when we started.

0:18:290:18:32

'And here he is now.'

0:18:330:18:34

So, that's not a great deal of difference, is it?

0:18:360:18:38

Here's a picture of Christopher.

0:18:390:18:40

'And Chris today?'

0:18:410:18:42

-Flipping hell, what happened to him?

-I know!

0:18:440:18:46

That is frightening, isn't it?

0:18:460:18:48

And here's a picture of me.

0:18:480:18:50

'In my mum's fleece.

0:18:500:18:51

'And now?

0:18:520:18:53

'Uh-oh.'

0:18:530:18:54

-Actually, I've aged bad as well, haven't I?

-No, I can't say you have.

0:18:550:18:58

Here's a picture of Bill when we first started.

0:18:580:19:00

And Billy today...

0:19:000:19:03

He's tampered with the pictures.

0:19:030:19:05

To be honest, there's not a great deal of change.

0:19:050:19:07

-There ain't.

-HE MOUTHS

0:19:070:19:09

-What?

-Nothing, nothing, nothing.

-No?

0:19:090:19:12

As the day draws to a close,

0:19:140:19:15

electrical and plumbing works are underway, almost all the new windows

0:19:150:19:19

are in upstairs, and the side extension is up, believe it or not.

0:19:190:19:23

But it's now trapping several tonnes of rubbish

0:19:230:19:25

in the back garden. Oh, and Julian...and his digger.

0:19:250:19:28

Other than that, it's been a great day.

0:19:280:19:30

Well, this is our extension. Big, isn't it?

0:19:300:19:32

Behind this wall is another room,

0:19:320:19:35

which we can't get to until we knock a door in to.

0:19:350:19:37

Let me show you what's going on inside.

0:19:370:19:40

Well, not going on, going out. Everything in the entire house.

0:19:400:19:42

Look at the downstairs. Everything's gone other than the chimney breast.

0:19:420:19:46

If you come round this way,

0:19:460:19:48

there is a hole here where the stairs used to be.

0:19:480:19:50

We decided to take those out.

0:19:500:19:51

I'd like to show you upstairs, but we can't, cos we can't get up there.

0:19:510:19:54

We have to put in a new staircase, which we're going to do tomorrow.

0:19:540:19:57

People don't think about doing this kind of thing because it costs...

0:19:570:20:00

Well, actually, only £200 for a new set of stairs. Why wouldn't you?

0:20:000:20:02

-What are you doing?

-We haven't quite finished.

0:20:020:20:04

We've got to put a set of stairs in, cos if we don't have them

0:20:040:20:06

in tonight no-one is going upstairs tomorrow to do any work.

0:20:060:20:09

That's a very good point. We'll see you tomorrow.

0:20:090:20:12

Sometimes you just have to take steps.

0:20:130:20:15

NICK CHUCKLES

0:20:150:20:16

The next morning, I meet up with Gary in the village hall,

0:20:180:20:21

where he and Liz had their wedding reception over 30 years ago.

0:20:210:20:25

Since then, the couple have been through thick and thin together.

0:20:250:20:29

You don't have to answer this, just from a father's point of view,

0:20:310:20:34

how have you dealt with all of this,

0:20:340:20:36

because it's not the way you expect the world to go for your boy, is it?

0:20:360:20:40

No. Em...

0:20:420:20:44

Sometimes you think, "Why me?"

0:20:440:20:47

Other times you think,

0:20:470:20:48

"Well, if it's me, someone else doesn't have to go through it."

0:20:480:20:51

But it's slightly different when it's your son. He has had dark days.

0:20:510:20:55

-Yeah.

-I suppose we all do, don't we?

0:20:550:20:59

Dealing with Scott's injuries have been a massive challenge,

0:20:590:21:02

but before he was even born, Liz was diagnosed with leukaemia.

0:21:020:21:06

She'd gone in for a laparoscopy just to see why we couldn't conceive.

0:21:090:21:13

She had a phone call within hours saying,

0:21:140:21:17

"You've got an appointment at the Cheltenham Cobalt Unit."

0:21:170:21:19

She's thinking, "You've got the wrong person."

0:21:190:21:22

-That's well-known around here as a cancer unit, is it?

-Yeah.

-OK.

0:21:220:21:24

Erm...

0:21:240:21:27

She just called in there and was diagnosed with a form of leukaemia.

0:21:270:21:32

At one stage, she was given three weeks to live,

0:21:320:21:36

or take a new drug.

0:21:360:21:37

So she said, "There isn't a choice.

0:21:390:21:40

"I'll take the drug which is untested."

0:21:400:21:43

Of all the guinea pigs, she's the only one still alive.

0:21:430:21:46

Is that right? She's the only one that pulled through?

0:21:460:21:48

Out of ten, she's the only one.

0:21:480:21:51

How much of a...?

0:21:510:21:52

You said that Liz had an enormous determination to fight

0:21:520:21:55

through her leukaemia before Scott came along.

0:21:550:21:58

Has she shown that same strength and resolve all the time

0:21:580:22:02

while looking after Scott as well?

0:22:020:22:05

The majority, yes.

0:22:050:22:07

But we all have good days and bad days.

0:22:070:22:10

She is a strong person. She is determined, just like he is.

0:22:130:22:16

I think that's where he gets it from.

0:22:160:22:18

More than me.

0:22:180:22:19

My glass is half empty.

0:22:210:22:23

Hers is half full.

0:22:230:22:24

Well, Gary, let's see if we can help, in some small way,

0:22:260:22:28

to fill that glass up.

0:22:280:22:29

Back at the house...

0:22:320:22:34

..the steels have arrived, but although I'm not around

0:22:350:22:38

to lend my usual assistance, they go in quickly and with relative ease.

0:22:380:22:42

-Do you know why that went quite well?

-Knowlesy weren't here, was he?

0:22:420:22:46

That's why it went well.

0:22:480:22:50

I do have feelings, you know.

0:22:500:22:51

The sparks are now flying unhindered,

0:22:530:22:55

and our new extension is getting bricked up.

0:22:550:22:58

Pressure is on, big fella. That door is coming tomorrow.

0:22:590:23:02

Yep, I'm there, I promise.

0:23:020:23:04

Yes, the little fella is right, it's already starting to feel like

0:23:040:23:08

no matter how fast we work, the jobs keep piling up.

0:23:080:23:12

We've still got all the plumbing and electrics

0:23:120:23:14

to go into the floor down here.

0:23:140:23:15

We've got the steels to build up over there.

0:23:150:23:17

Now we've got a porch to build as well.

0:23:170:23:19

We're actually behind where we normally are.

0:23:190:23:22

If you think we've got problems inside, outside there's ten tonnes

0:23:220:23:26

of rubbish and two tonnes of digger trapped in the garden.

0:23:260:23:30

But a low rumble in the distance heralds the arrival

0:23:300:23:34

of what could be a giant solution.

0:23:340:23:36

Is it a truck? Is it a train?

0:23:360:23:40

No, it's a crane, and we love 'em.

0:23:400:23:43

It's like International Rescue.

0:23:440:23:46

HE SINGS THUNDERBIRDS THEME

0:23:460:23:53

I've got a very rubbery face, haven't I?

0:23:530:23:56

In no time at all,

0:23:560:23:57

this king of on-site machinery has made light work of our rubbish bags,

0:23:570:24:01

with each one weighing in at just under a tonne.

0:24:010:24:04

That's no mean feat. Just look at it go!

0:24:040:24:07

Look at him up there, living every man's dream.

0:24:100:24:13

What did you want to be when you grew up?

0:24:130:24:15

A crane driver.

0:24:150:24:16

There you have it! He wanted to be a crane driver. Of course he did.

0:24:180:24:22

Julian doesn't seem to be having as much fun.

0:24:220:24:24

I'm guessing that's because he knows his digger

0:24:240:24:26

is next to go over the top. All two tonnes of it.

0:24:260:24:29

MUSIC: Without You by Harry Nilsson

0:24:290:24:30

Hold it there, hold it there.

0:24:300:24:32

They're taking my machine, I've got loads left to do.

0:24:320:24:36

That's why that type of machinery has been invented -

0:24:360:24:39

to take the hard work out of it.

0:24:390:24:41

She's going. She's off.

0:24:460:24:48

# I can't live

0:24:480:24:52

# If living is without you

0:24:520:24:56

# I can't live

0:24:560:24:59

-# I can't give any more... #

-That's him sulking now

0:24:590:25:02

for the rest of the time.

0:25:020:25:03

# I can't live... #

0:25:030:25:07

CHEERING

0:25:090:25:11

Well, he's on the shovel from here on in.

0:25:140:25:17

-Fancy a cup of tea in the meantime?

-Yeah, let's have one.

0:25:170:25:20

Now the garden's clear, landscaping can resume.

0:25:220:25:25

Back inside, Shaun wants to outline his vision for the kitchen.

0:25:270:25:31

Currently, the kitchen is sitting where we're standing.

0:25:310:25:35

One of the things that Scott said was that he couldn't cook,

0:25:350:25:37

so we've got a split-level kitchen -

0:25:370:25:39

one with a sink with a gap underneath and a hot plate

0:25:390:25:42

and an oven at his level.

0:25:420:25:44

Also, we've got an ordinary oven at eye level

0:25:440:25:47

and a hob for his mum to cook as well,

0:25:470:25:49

so the two of them can cook together or he can be independent.

0:25:490:25:52

Right. There's a couple of things you missed out on the kitchen.

0:25:520:25:55

-What's that?

-Water and electric.

0:25:550:25:57

Yes, we've moved it quite dramatically.

0:25:570:25:59

There's no drains in the house here.

0:25:590:26:01

-No.

-So we've had to lift the floor. Look, he's digging this out.

0:26:010:26:05

Well, I really hope it's going to be worth it.

0:26:070:26:09

Of course it'll be worth it.

0:26:090:26:11

See, that's why we all love designers as builders.

0:26:130:26:17

Good job everyone here sees the bigger picture.

0:26:170:26:19

We're going to watch him go in there, it's going to be great.

0:26:190:26:21

So rewarding to see something...

0:26:210:26:23

We're going to get something for what we're putting in.

0:26:230:26:25

As well as rowing for his country,

0:26:250:26:27

Scott plays wheelchair rugby league for Swindon St George.

0:26:270:26:31

He's invited Billy and Julian along for a training session.

0:26:310:26:35

This should be funny.

0:26:350:26:37

All right, Scott?

0:26:380:26:39

Scott, you all right?

0:26:390:26:40

-So this is it?

-Yeah, this is it.

0:26:400:26:43

We're playing wheelchair rugby league today.

0:26:430:26:45

For a couple of year I was told I would never play rugby again.

0:26:450:26:48

I didn't know the sport until last year.

0:26:480:26:50

I might be in wheels, but it's not much different.

0:26:500:26:52

I tell you what? You're a terrific kid. You're a terrific kid.

0:26:520:26:56

No, what you've been through and you still come out smiling,

0:26:560:26:59

it's brilliant. Love you lots, son.

0:26:590:27:01

Don't big him up too much, he might...

0:27:010:27:04

I might disappoint you, mate.

0:27:040:27:06

See what sort of strength he's got.

0:27:060:27:08

I'm not sure they know what they've let themselves in for here.

0:27:100:27:13

This game is played at a fierce tempo and involves...Some big hits.

0:27:130:27:18

Where's the exit?

0:27:190:27:21

It's not for the faint-hearted.

0:27:210:27:22

Be gentle with them, they haven't finished building the house yet.

0:27:220:27:25

This is nervous.

0:27:250:27:27

Don't worry, Billy, your dodgy hand will be OK.

0:27:270:27:29

It's your knees, hips and ankles you've got to worry about.

0:27:290:27:32

Go on, son.

0:28:090:28:11

Love you, son.

0:28:140:28:16

Cheers, mate.

0:28:160:28:18

That was good.

0:28:180:28:19

Today we've got a special DIY SOS Player Of The Match.

0:28:200:28:23

Billy, come here so we can give you this trophy, mate.

0:28:230:28:26

Come and share it. Six months apiece.

0:28:290:28:32

I thought it was amazing. Physically, it's very hard.

0:28:340:28:37

My hips, my back... They just get in there and... They're brilliant.

0:28:370:28:41

Yeah, very good.

0:28:410:28:43

For me, personally, wheelchair rugby league helps with,

0:28:430:28:45

one, physical and, two, psychological.

0:28:450:28:48

You might lose, but you're still playing. That's all that matters.

0:28:480:28:51

One, two, three...

0:28:510:28:52

ALL: St George!

0:28:520:28:54

NICK: The next day, walls seem to have appeared overnight,

0:29:000:29:03

but it's not the building fairies - there's a simpler explanation.

0:29:030:29:07

It's all about preparation and setting things up ready to go.

0:29:070:29:11

This morning, we were in first thing, muck was on - bang!

0:29:110:29:14

Straight on the wall, no messing around.

0:29:140:29:16

We could tell you were proper tradesmen.

0:29:160:29:17

The two hats, the swimming trunks, the knee brace, the socks...

0:29:170:29:21

That's a torn meniscus.

0:29:250:29:26

-Is it?

-Yeah.

0:29:260:29:27

-From building work?

-Servicing. That's why...

-Servicing what?

0:29:270:29:31

-Boilers.

-OK.

0:29:310:29:32

Mystery solved, thank goodness, but soon another one looms -

0:29:340:29:38

the digger we lifted out the garden yesterday has somehow reappeared.

0:29:380:29:42

What's going on?!

0:29:420:29:44

What the...? What-what? What... What?!

0:29:490:29:52

Where did...? How?

0:29:520:29:54

All I can say is, when I walked in this morning, it was already here.

0:29:540:29:58

Julian, you can't get the thing...out!

0:29:580:30:01

But it wasn't finished with.

0:30:030:30:06

-He's up to something.

-Oh, no, he's definitely done something.

0:30:060:30:08

-I've got lots of digging to do.

-Yeah, I bet you have.

-Carry on.

0:30:080:30:12

Julian!

0:30:130:30:15

I mean, great builder, but he's no magician.

0:30:150:30:17

How did the digger get back into the garden?

0:30:170:30:20

Well, he's on the shovel from here on in.

0:30:210:30:24

-Fancy a cup of tea in the meantime?

-Love one. Let's have one.

0:30:240:30:28

Did the cameraman keep filming? He did. What's he up to?

0:30:280:30:31

-Hello, mate.

-Hello, mate. Are you all right?

0:30:310:30:33

You know you just lifted that digger out,

0:30:330:30:35

you couldn't just pop it back in again, could you?

0:30:350:30:37

-Hmm... Not really.

-Do you like cakes?

0:30:370:30:39

-How about if I was to bribe you with that bad boy?

-That would do nicely.

0:30:390:30:42

-Lovely. Thank you.

-Thank you very much.

-Thank you.

0:30:420:30:45

# Dig, dig, dig, dig, digging

0:30:450:30:47

# Dig a little trench with me

0:30:470:30:49

# Dig, dig, dig, dig, digging

0:30:490:30:51

# I can go back digging with you. #

0:30:510:30:53

He's not right, is he, really?

0:30:560:30:57

The final mystery du jour is we're three days in,

0:30:590:31:02

and by now the house should be teeming with plasterers,

0:31:020:31:05

but there don't seem to be any in sight.

0:31:050:31:07

How many plasterers have you got on today?

0:31:100:31:13

I've got loads, but nothing's ready to be plastered.

0:31:130:31:16

-Can we not plasterboard upstairs yet?

-No.

0:31:160:31:18

-The electricians still in there?

-About an hour. About an hour away.

0:31:180:31:20

It's going to be a big plasterboarding party, isn't it?

0:31:200:31:22

-It's hundreds of metres, actually, isn't it?

-Yeah. Yeah.

0:31:220:31:27

Behind on day three is not a good place to be.

0:31:270:31:29

Mind you, it's better than being behind on day nine.

0:31:290:31:32

-There, come on, now.

-I'm good to go, I'm good to go.

0:31:320:31:35

Sometimes when we're up against it,

0:31:350:31:37

it's nice to be reminded how we got here in the first place.

0:31:370:31:39

Rhys is Scott's best mate,

0:31:410:31:43

and his younger sister Morgan nominated him for DIY SOS.

0:31:430:31:46

Seeing what he's like in his home, it wasn't right.

0:31:480:31:52

We just didn't feel that it was right for him,

0:31:520:31:55

cos his parents can't be around to help him forever.

0:31:550:31:58

At some point, he needs to be able to do stuff for his own,

0:31:580:32:01

even if that is just making his lunch,

0:32:010:32:03

which he can't do at the moment,

0:32:030:32:05

cos he can't get his chair around the kitchen properly.

0:32:050:32:09

He doesn't want people to feel sorry for him.

0:32:090:32:11

He hates that, he absolutely hates it.

0:32:110:32:13

He doesn't like if...

0:32:140:32:16

If he's in his chair, he doesn't like it if you bend down to him.

0:32:160:32:19

So what we do is if he's sitting on the floor and we're in the kitchen,

0:32:190:32:22

we just sit on the floor with him.

0:32:220:32:24

If you look up the road now,

0:32:240:32:26

there's 80 people working on the house,

0:32:260:32:28

cos you guys wrote in to get the help that you needed,

0:32:280:32:31

so how are you feeling now it's happening?

0:32:310:32:34

-Overwhelmed.

-It's just amazing.

0:32:340:32:36

Years, he's wanted an independence.

0:32:370:32:40

Finally being able to have it, I reckon it'll be amazing for him.

0:32:400:32:45

But I do think he will be a little bit overwhelmed.

0:32:450:32:48

Back at the house, upstairs,

0:32:480:32:49

Chris is a changed man and his plasterers are working up a sweat.

0:32:490:32:54

-Feel the heat?

-Yeah, body heat.

0:32:560:32:58

We've seen big trowels in our time, but that one...

0:32:580:33:01

-I'm not boasting, but I have got a six-foot one. You've not.

-I have.

0:33:010:33:04

-I've never seen you use it.

-Well, I wouldn't on this, would I?

-Why not?

0:33:040:33:09

I don't want to damage it.

0:33:090:33:10

Unbelievable.

0:33:110:33:13

The feel-good factor continues when I catch up with Pete,

0:33:130:33:16

a family friend, downstairs.

0:33:160:33:18

My kids went to the same school as Scott did.

0:33:180:33:21

We knew him before he was poorly,

0:33:210:33:22

before the family had all their troubles, basically.

0:33:220:33:26

Very, very lovely family.

0:33:260:33:27

If this was going on across the road,

0:33:270:33:29

-they'd be the first people to help.

-Would they?

0:33:290:33:31

They would. Scott is such an inspiration.

0:33:310:33:34

But Gary and Liz seem amazing people, as well.

0:33:340:33:37

They're just head down, got on, supported Scott and just graft.

0:33:370:33:40

They're so busy dealing with the day-to-day, bless them, you know...

0:33:400:33:44

That's what parents do, I suppose, but in this instance,

0:33:440:33:47

they just keep doing it and more.

0:33:470:33:49

I don't know how this family have kept so calm and just carried on.

0:33:490:33:53

My hunch is it has a lot to do with Liz's determination,

0:33:560:33:59

in spite of her own suffering.

0:33:590:34:01

Before Scott even came along, you were very seriously ill.

0:34:030:34:06

I mean, I was very poorly. But I was still determined to hang on to life.

0:34:060:34:11

I never once was going to give up. I think that's just me.

0:34:110:34:14

I'm just like that.

0:34:140:34:15

After that as well, when Scott was six months old,

0:34:150:34:18

I had problems with my jaw, they found a lump in my jaw.

0:34:180:34:21

-That was cancerous in the jaw, as well, was it?

-Yeah.

0:34:210:34:25

I had 24 operations over a seven-year period,

0:34:250:34:27

so I now have chronic pain, so if I eat anything,

0:34:270:34:30

the pain is just... Well, excruciating.

0:34:300:34:33

It goes right down my back and right down to the spine and into the...

0:34:330:34:36

But how do you deal with that

0:34:360:34:38

on top of everything else that you've got going on?

0:34:380:34:41

I just do.

0:34:410:34:43

It's just our way, I suppose.

0:34:430:34:45

The other thing that's most impressive,

0:34:450:34:47

and everyone finds really impressive about Scott,

0:34:470:34:49

-is his absolute determination.

-Hmm.

0:34:490:34:51

-There must have been dark times.

-There have been.

0:34:510:34:53

There's been anger, as well,

0:34:530:34:55

-but you've got to let them get it out, haven't you?

-Hmm.

0:34:550:34:58

Sometimes it's been turned on us, as well, more so me, I think,

0:34:580:35:00

because I'm the one that's always there.

0:35:000:35:04

Which has been the toughest thing to deal with - your leukaemia

0:35:040:35:07

-and then cancer of the jaw or... Scott.

-..the damage to Scott?

0:35:070:35:10

Definitely Scott, because as a mum,

0:35:100:35:13

you want to take it on yourself, don't you?

0:35:130:35:16

If I could have been in his place, I would have done.

0:35:160:35:18

We were watching the athletics and he forgot that he couldn't walk.

0:35:180:35:21

He just tried to stand up and just went splat to the floor.

0:35:210:35:25

That's heartbreaking, isn't it?

0:35:270:35:29

How can you forget?

0:35:300:35:31

You know, he was in the moment, I suppose, and he...

0:35:310:35:34

Does that upset you, to think he has to deal with that every day?

0:35:340:35:36

Yeah, yeah.

0:35:360:35:37

Yeah.

0:35:390:35:41

He's very, very...Determined that you guys should get some space

0:35:410:35:44

and get to do the things you want to do.

0:35:440:35:46

-But he never says that.

-Families don't, do they?

0:35:460:35:49

No. No, I don't suppose you talk about that sort of thing, do you?

0:35:490:35:52

-Do you have any hobbies?

-I love dress-making, sewing, anything.

0:35:520:35:55

-Do you?

-Yeah.

-I'm not sure there's enough room

0:35:550:35:57

in the place with all the things that we're doing.

0:35:570:35:59

As long as I've got a dining room table,

0:35:590:36:01

-I can put my sewing machine on.

-Put it on that. That's a thought.

0:36:010:36:03

Right.

0:36:030:36:05

We need to do the best for this family,

0:36:050:36:07

and it's nice to know that we've got something up our sleeves

0:36:070:36:09

for Liz, as well.

0:36:090:36:11

When I get back to the house, it feels like things are coming on.

0:36:130:36:17

At least we're actually getting to the stage

0:36:170:36:19

where we're starting to put stuff back in rather than take stuff out.

0:36:190:36:21

What are you looking at? When did they take the roof off?

0:36:210:36:24

I thought we were only supposed to be patching in the roof!

0:36:240:36:27

They've taken the whole flipping thing off.

0:36:270:36:29

At some stage, mate, we've got to stop taking things out and off...

0:36:290:36:33

-I know.

-..and start putting things in, because...

0:36:330:36:35

These people are brilliant,

0:36:350:36:37

they just really want to give them a perfect house.

0:36:370:36:39

The tiles have passed their sell-by date, really,

0:36:410:36:43

so we put on a new breathable membrane

0:36:430:36:44

and we're going to put on some new tiles.

0:36:440:36:46

Effectively, you've got a brand-new roof on a brand-new build, really.

0:36:460:36:50

OK, fair enough, it's just another example of our builders going

0:36:520:36:55

the extra mile, or ten miles - but we are up against it.

0:36:550:36:58

Every aspect of this job seems to be soaking up valuable time -

0:37:010:37:04

for instance, getting rid of this summer house

0:37:040:37:06

would have made our lives easier, because it's in the way.

0:37:060:37:09

But it has sentimental value, so we've kept it.

0:37:090:37:11

That means moving it...four times.

0:37:110:37:14

Come on, let's grab hold of it and lift it.

0:37:160:37:18

Moving a shed once is a pain, even with this many men.

0:37:200:37:23

To you. To me.

0:37:230:37:25

Although this lot do make it look easy.

0:37:310:37:33

This is great, cos you can just paint these in,

0:37:360:37:39

and then, if they feel like moving it again,

0:37:390:37:41

they can just move it around the garden.

0:37:410:37:43

With just four days left now to complete the build,

0:37:430:37:46

our kitchen has finally arrived.

0:37:460:37:48

There are a few base units in,

0:37:480:37:50

but there's a lot to do in very little time.

0:37:500:37:53

We've just got to stretch the hours in the day to get it done,

0:37:530:37:56

that's all.

0:37:560:37:57

Everyone's happy to do that.

0:37:570:37:59

I know people think we make this up, but, really, we are up against it

0:37:590:38:03

and we've hit a snag in Scott's wet room.

0:38:030:38:05

With a shower where you have the gully in the floor,

0:38:050:38:08

it needs to be set so the water will go into the drain

0:38:080:38:11

rather than go out the door,

0:38:110:38:13

so there has to be a slight fall

0:38:130:38:14

and you need to have a tray where it will do it for you,

0:38:140:38:18

so basically that was our afterthought.

0:38:180:38:20

So we'll have to dig out two inches of concrete

0:38:220:38:24

then re-concrete back to the right height for one to fit in.

0:38:240:38:28

Two words - time consuming.

0:38:290:38:32

Things have moved on in the kitchen, but as it's being custom-built,

0:38:350:38:38

there's plenty of detail to finalise.

0:38:380:38:41

Right, so we've got that one there.

0:38:410:38:43

You've got a two ring hob on that side.

0:38:430:38:45

'So why are we hand-building the kitchen

0:38:450:38:47

'and doing all these fiddly bits?

0:38:470:38:49

'Because we're building it specifically to meet Scott's needs.'

0:38:490:38:54

Basically, this house is being built from scratch,

0:38:540:38:56

because we completely gutted it.

0:38:560:38:58

We put a new extension on, we rewired it,

0:38:580:39:01

we've replumbed it, we've put a central heating system into it.

0:39:010:39:05

We've got to do the garden, we've got to do the driveway,

0:39:050:39:07

we've got to walk out the door and give this back

0:39:070:39:09

so that it works for Scott.

0:39:090:39:11

It's a massive ask.

0:39:110:39:12

'It's a massive ask, but we never throw in the towel.

0:39:140:39:17

'Well, we have a good example in Scott, don't we? He never does.

0:39:170:39:20

'The way that he's overcome so many obstacles

0:39:200:39:23

'to pursue his sporting dreams is an inspiration to us all.

0:39:230:39:27

'I caught up with him down at the gym to find out

0:39:280:39:30

'how he stays so positive.'

0:39:300:39:32

So, now, how hard are you training to try and make the Rio Olympics?

0:39:340:39:37

Tokyo and 2020's the main goal for us,

0:39:370:39:39

because I'll be 22 and I'll be fully developed,

0:39:390:39:41

because my muscles aren't fully developed yet.

0:39:410:39:44

So you're currently committing yourself to just over

0:39:440:39:46

five and a half years of training twice a day?

0:39:460:39:49

Yeah, six days a week.

0:39:490:39:50

-That's a lot of training, mate.

-Yeah.

0:39:500:39:53

Do you ever think you've been dealt a rough hand in life?

0:39:530:39:56

I know I have had problems in the past,

0:39:560:39:59

but you can't really change them.

0:39:590:40:00

Because if you carry on and you grieve,

0:40:000:40:02

it's going to be with you for life.

0:40:020:40:04

Whereas, if you just let it go, it's gone.

0:40:040:40:07

And do you think you've actually managed to do that, let it go?

0:40:070:40:09

I'm trying to, yeah. In the mornings, I try and stand up,

0:40:090:40:12

sometimes I fall on the floor.

0:40:120:40:14

Because in my dreams, I'm walking, I'm running around.

0:40:140:40:16

Next thing you know, I'm trying to get out of bed

0:40:160:40:18

and I'll face-plant the floor.

0:40:180:40:20

Wow.

0:40:200:40:22

So your brain is playing tricks on you,

0:40:240:40:27

trying to stop you...

0:40:270:40:28

It's almost fighting you getting used to it.

0:40:290:40:32

It's quite common with a lot of the athletes.

0:40:320:40:35

As well as the difficulties you're facing on a day-to-day basis,

0:40:350:40:38

it's kind of been tough on your mum, too.

0:40:380:40:41

Yeah, physically, because she's about 5'8, I'm 6'5,

0:40:410:40:44

so there's a big height difference, and she's probably about 58 kilos.

0:40:440:40:47

I'm at least 85, so she has to help me

0:40:470:40:50

with lifting quite a lot at the moment.

0:40:500:40:53

And she's got quite a lot of pain anyway.

0:40:530:40:55

What is it that really frustrates you at the moment?

0:40:570:41:00

Little things, like everyday life.

0:41:000:41:02

You're like, "Oh, I can do that, I can do that"

0:41:020:41:04

then I'm there, like, "Actually, I can't."

0:41:040:41:07

I love cooking, yet I'm not allowed to because I can't feel my legs,

0:41:070:41:11

and if I pour stuff on my legs, I won't know.

0:41:110:41:13

Not being in a chair is extremely hard to explain.

0:41:150:41:18

Independence is something that you had beforehand,

0:41:180:41:20

you try and get it back again. It's not easy to explain at all.

0:41:200:41:24

And what's the little shed at the bottom of the garden?

0:41:240:41:27

It used to be where I used to go before my injury,

0:41:270:41:30

my own little haven.

0:41:300:41:32

So that shed's fairly important?

0:41:320:41:34

Yeah.

0:41:340:41:35

I don't know whether we can find one the same

0:41:350:41:37

now that we've put it in a skip.

0:41:370:41:39

'At the house, we're throwing everything -

0:41:430:41:46

'and I mean everything and the bathroom sink at it -

0:41:460:41:48

'trying to get on track.'

0:41:480:41:50

It's getting crazy.

0:41:520:41:54

This is the busiest I've ever known a DIY SOS Big Build

0:41:550:41:59

at this stage of the build.

0:41:590:42:00

Everyone walking down there, look, floor layers...

0:42:000:42:02

Trying to put a membrane down. It's just absolutely crazy.

0:42:020:42:07

It's been hard work. There's tilers, there's painters,

0:42:070:42:10

electricians, there's plumbers.

0:42:100:42:12

Everyone is working around each other

0:42:120:42:14

and, you know, we're all doing it at the same time.

0:42:140:42:18

'There's still a mountain to climb in the garden,

0:42:180:42:20

'but we're making steady progress.'

0:42:200:42:22

The patio's down here, the path's in.

0:42:230:42:26

They've laid all the steps round here.

0:42:260:42:28

It's absolutely beautiful. And they've carried the path

0:42:280:42:30

all the way up through the garden and then it's like - bingo!

0:42:300:42:33

'And, ladies and gentlemen, the piece de resistance...

0:42:330:42:36

'somewhere for Scott to train. There's a way to go,

0:42:360:42:39

'but when the gym equipment's in, it all starts to take shape.'

0:42:390:42:42

Obviously, it's been really hard for us to design this,

0:42:420:42:45

because, obviously, we're trying to look at it from his point of view.

0:42:450:42:48

So we think we've done a good job.

0:42:480:42:50

LAUGHTER

0:42:500:42:52

You don't get many of them after a grandson.

0:42:520:42:54

'Look at them! All trying to get in on the act.

0:42:560:43:00

'There are still units to install, paths to lay

0:43:000:43:02

'and cables to box, but Shaun, our designer,

0:43:020:43:05

'is totally oblivious.'

0:43:050:43:07

Great, that's lovely. The colours come out really nicely.

0:43:070:43:10

'Colours?'

0:43:100:43:11

Yeah, sorry, slight change of plan.

0:43:110:43:14

I think we should continue the line over the architrave...

0:43:140:43:17

-OK, all right.

-..of the colour. So with the light colour that half.

0:43:170:43:20

All right, I'll sort it next.

0:43:200:43:22

-Thank you.

-No problem.

-Sorry about changing things at the last minute.

0:43:220:43:25

'And so you should be! We're under the most pressure

0:43:250:43:27

'we've ever been under on a build,

0:43:270:43:29

'and the new boy's worried about painting in half a door.

0:43:290:43:32

'Although, to be fair, that sort of attention to detail

0:43:320:43:34

'does make this one stand out a bit.'

0:43:340:43:36

-A lot of electronics in here...

-Yes.

-..connected to...

0:43:380:43:41

Well, can be connected to his smartphone or tablet.

0:43:410:43:43

Yeah, it's all connected through a lighting system, via Raco units,

0:43:430:43:46

which are controlled by his iPad or iPhone.

0:43:460:43:50

Depends on what mood he's in, he can change it up or down,

0:43:500:43:53

or alter it himself.

0:43:530:43:54

-Yeah.

-It's all clever stuff.

-Yeah.

0:43:540:43:56

'Only viewers under the age of 35 understood that.

0:43:560:43:59

'Path servicing is not quite as technical

0:43:590:44:01

'but essential for providing Scott's step-free access

0:44:010:44:04

'from the kerb right to his front door.'

0:44:040:44:06

Why are we wallpapering the ceiling?

0:44:060:44:08

Because I think if you sit on the sofa and you're lying back,

0:44:080:44:10

you've got something nice to look at.

0:44:100:44:12

Is there any of this job where you thought,

0:44:120:44:14

"That probably is going to take a long time

0:44:140:44:17

-"and be quite difficult, I need to compromise here"?

-No.

0:44:170:44:19

'That's designers for you.

0:44:210:44:22

'Thanks to Shaun, there's plenty of last-minute dressing to do.

0:44:220:44:25

'So it looks like this one's going right down to the wire.

0:44:250:44:28

'Nine days ago, Scott Jones was barely getting by

0:44:300:44:32

'in this house.'

0:44:320:44:34

You want to be able to be independent

0:44:340:44:36

and actually be in control of your own life.

0:44:360:44:38

I get quite frustrated and sometimes upset about it,

0:44:380:44:40

because I want to be my own person but at the same time,

0:44:400:44:42

I can't be my own person due to house isn't adapted.

0:44:420:44:45

'A world-class athlete who couldn't shower in his own home.

0:44:450:44:49

'His parents were at their wits' end.'

0:44:510:44:54

It upsets me because I feel like we failed him

0:44:540:44:57

because we should be able to provide for our own son.

0:44:570:45:01

'But this house just wasn't built to accommodate someone

0:45:010:45:04

'with a serious disability.

0:45:040:45:05

'The doorways were too narrow for a wheelchair.

0:45:050:45:08

'Everything was the wrong height in the kitchen for a young man

0:45:080:45:11

'who loves to cook.

0:45:110:45:12

'The upstairs bathroom and garden were inaccessible

0:45:120:45:15

'and a lack of space throughout the house meant Scott

0:45:150:45:18

'was often confined to his makeshift bedroom.

0:45:180:45:21

'With nothing adapted to his needs, Scott was almost totally dependent

0:45:210:45:24

'on his parents.

0:45:240:45:26

'Which is where the local community stepped in with a bit

0:45:290:45:31

'of brute force and TLC.

0:45:310:45:34

'They've put in an epic shift to turn things around.'

0:45:340:45:37

Yeah, it makes you feel good that you're doing it.

0:45:390:45:42

Scott's a good lad, so it's nice to give a bit back

0:45:430:45:46

and help out where you can.

0:45:460:45:48

'The team have transformed a cramped downstairs living area

0:45:550:45:58

'into a modern, open-plan living space

0:45:580:46:01

'that's fully wheelchair accessible.

0:46:010:46:04

'The kitchen has moved to the back of the house

0:46:040:46:06

'and contains an island that's modified for Scott.

0:46:060:46:09

'With low, accessible worktops,

0:46:090:46:11

'he can get under and prepare his own meals,

0:46:110:46:14

'gaining some of the independence he desperately craves.

0:46:140:46:17

'With widened doors down here, Scott now has the freedom to roam.

0:46:170:46:21

'He no longer needs to be confined to his bedroom -

0:46:210:46:24

'but it's a far better place to be now.

0:46:240:46:27

'We've created a refuge

0:46:270:46:28

'where an athlete can get in the right headspace for competing.

0:46:280:46:32

'Patio doors provide direct access to the garden,

0:46:320:46:35

'which has previously been out of bounds for Scott.

0:46:350:46:39

'Next to his bedroom is a new wet room.

0:46:390:46:41

'Scott now no longer needs to leave home

0:46:410:46:44

'to take a shower.

0:46:440:46:45

'Flipping the direction of the stairs

0:46:450:46:47

'has delivered more space upstairs.

0:46:470:46:50

'All the rooms are new. Also, Mum and Dad's bedroom

0:46:500:46:53

'is soundproofed so Gary can get some uninterrupted kip

0:46:530:46:56

'during the day when he's been working nights.

0:46:560:46:59

'We've also created a sewing room for Liz

0:46:590:47:01

'to enjoy some of that downtime, as Scott needs to rely on her less.

0:47:010:47:05

'It's her little treat.

0:47:050:47:07

'There's been a complete garden makeover,

0:47:090:47:12

'and this all-weather path makes it fully accessible to Scott

0:47:120:47:15

'for the first time in years. So he can get down to his new gym,

0:47:150:47:19

'where he can train as many times as he wants a day,

0:47:190:47:22

'without Liz having to ferry him around.

0:47:220:47:25

'It's wonderful, and it's time to show the family their new home.

0:47:260:47:30

'Now, this is going to be a lot for Scott to take in.

0:47:370:47:39

'Since his injuries,

0:47:390:47:41

'he sometimes struggles with absorbing information immediately.

0:47:410:47:44

'But I'm pretty sure that once it all sinks in

0:47:440:47:46

'that he'll love what we've done.'

0:47:460:47:49

Right, that's the last bump you're going to have.

0:47:490:47:51

So have a look up.

0:47:510:47:53

Oh.

0:47:530:47:54

This is your new front door.

0:47:590:48:00

What do you reckon?

0:48:000:48:02

-It's wide enough.

-Yes.

0:48:020:48:04

Hob.

0:48:270:48:28

I can reach it.

0:48:280:48:30

To the left, oven door.

0:48:300:48:31

Pull it down. Slide it in.

0:48:310:48:34

Also, what's the other big problem if you cook, what's the danger?

0:48:340:48:37

Legs.

0:48:370:48:38

-Because, if you...

-Oh, thank you!

0:48:380:48:41

If you put stuff that's boiling on your legs, you don't notice.

0:48:410:48:44

So you could do yourself damage.

0:48:440:48:45

You want to try on your new apron?

0:48:450:48:47

Over your legs, that bit round your head.

0:48:480:48:50

Just want to demonstrate this for a minute.

0:48:500:48:52

Tuck it in. Go on.

0:48:520:48:54

Now, when you cook,

0:48:550:48:56

even if you spill something on you, no damage.

0:48:560:48:59

-Heat resistant.

-Thank you.

0:48:590:49:01

-You're a proper chef, mate, in your own kitchen.

-I can cook, yeah!

0:49:020:49:05

That was kind of a big deal, wasn't it?

0:49:050:49:07

Yeah, it is.

0:49:080:49:10

Fridge.

0:49:120:49:13

Yes, cos you're cooking chilli con carne tonight, for your family.

0:49:130:49:16

Yeah, I am, yeah.

0:49:160:49:17

It's a bit surreal at the moment,

0:49:230:49:24

because when I left this house, I could barely get in.

0:49:240:49:27

And now I can get in the house,

0:49:270:49:28

I can get through the doors,

0:49:280:49:30

and I can actually, properly, now, I can cook,

0:49:300:49:32

and I actually get to show my parents that I can do something.

0:49:320:49:35

-Will you have your mates over?

-Yeah, I can.

0:49:350:49:37

You can cook for them.

0:49:370:49:38

You can all eat at the table.

0:49:380:49:40

And then, you can show them your new room.

0:49:400:49:43

Yeah.

0:49:430:49:44

Thank you.

0:49:580:49:59

-I don't have to worry about getting stuck in the door.

-No.

0:50:040:50:07

Or destroying it.

0:50:070:50:08

Mate, there isn't a place in the house

0:50:080:50:10

you need to worry about getting stuck any more.

0:50:100:50:12

-The whole house is yours again.

-Thank you.

0:50:120:50:14

From the front kerb of the road, to the bottom of the garden,

0:50:140:50:16

-you can get everywhere.

-Thank you.

0:50:160:50:18

-You all right?

-Yeah.

0:50:220:50:24

(Yeah, I'm fine.)

0:50:250:50:27

Let me show you some cool stuff. Your... Your tablet, whatever,

0:50:270:50:30

we've linked it up to your lighting system,

0:50:300:50:32

so you can actually turn the lighting off on here,

0:50:320:50:34

so if I press off...

0:50:340:50:35

Everything goes down and disappears.

0:50:350:50:37

If you want to go back on...

0:50:370:50:39

And then...

0:50:390:50:40

you go into relax mode.

0:50:400:50:41

-It's a lot to take in, isn't it?

-Yeah, it is.

0:50:450:50:47

And I know that I'm supposed to be giving you time

0:50:470:50:49

to assimilate this quietly.

0:50:490:50:50

Yeah.

0:50:500:50:51

How cool is that?

0:50:580:50:59

It's brilliant!

0:50:590:51:00

I can move it up and down as well.

0:51:000:51:02

Yeah.

0:51:020:51:03

There's also a remote control you can see on the wall there.

0:51:030:51:06

It connects to the remote control over here,

0:51:060:51:08

so you're coming in in the morning, press the button,

0:51:080:51:11

it flashes red until it hits the temperature that you've preset.

0:51:110:51:13

It flashes, it tells you when it's up to speed, and you come in.

0:51:130:51:16

-Is it all right?

-Yes, it's all right.

0:51:190:51:21

It's all change upstairs, as well,

0:51:240:51:25

with a few additions requested by Scott for Gary and Liz.

0:51:250:51:29

Oh.

0:51:320:51:33

Wow.

0:51:330:51:34

That's fantastic.

0:51:360:51:37

That's lovely.

0:51:390:51:41

That's fantastic.

0:51:410:51:42

You'll notice that it's very quiet,

0:51:420:51:44

because not only have you got new windows and doors

0:51:440:51:46

throughout the whole house,

0:51:460:51:47

we've also soundproofed the entire room, because you work shifts.

0:51:470:51:50

-That's amazing.

-That...

0:51:500:51:52

-That'll be so much better.

-That's really thoughtful.

0:51:520:51:54

-Thank you.

-Silence is golden.

-Yeah.

-Oh, it is when you work nights.

0:51:540:51:57

LAUGHTER

0:51:570:51:58

Now, in amongst talking to you about what Scott needed,

0:51:590:52:02

what you might not have known is we were also talking to Scott

0:52:020:52:05

about what you guys needed.

0:52:050:52:06

So, there's one door left,

0:52:060:52:08

and we'd kind of like you to just pop into that door,

0:52:080:52:10

through that door, and see what's left. It's not massive, but it's...

0:52:100:52:13

something Scott asked for specifically for you.

0:52:130:52:15

SHE GASPS

0:52:150:52:16

Thank you.

0:52:210:52:23

Oh...

0:52:230:52:24

It's got all my bits and pieces in, as well.

0:52:240:52:26

Thank you very much.

0:52:260:52:27

-He's not a bad boy, is he?

-He's not a bad boy at all, is he?!

-Oh...

0:52:290:52:32

SHE SNIFFS

0:52:340:52:35

Thank you for my sewing room.

0:52:380:52:41

It's lovely. Are you all right?

0:52:410:52:42

Thank you very much.

0:52:420:52:44

-It's all right.

-Very thoughtful.

0:52:440:52:45

-And my soundproofing!

-Oh, yeah, God!

0:52:460:52:49

-Oops.

-You all right?

-Yeah, I'm good.

0:52:500:52:52

-Are you sure?

-Yeah.

0:52:520:52:54

-You've had too many hills to climb up...

-Yeah.

0:52:540:52:56

-..haven't you, really? As a family.

-Yeah, the highs have been high,

0:52:560:52:59

-but then the lows have been really low, haven't they, Scott?

-Yeah.

0:52:590:53:02

-They're going to get better, aren't they?

-Yeah.

-Yeah.

0:53:020:53:04

Especially in there.

0:53:040:53:05

-Amazing.

-Yeah.

0:53:050:53:07

It is a lot to take in, isn't it?

0:53:070:53:08

-Yeah.

-A lot.

0:53:080:53:10

The way we've completely transformed the inside of this house

0:53:110:53:14

is going to provide Gary, Liz and Scott

0:53:140:53:17

with a brand-new lease of life.

0:53:170:53:18

What we've done in the back garden...

0:53:180:53:20

will help them even more.

0:53:200:53:22

SHE GASPS

0:53:240:53:25

That is amazing.

0:53:270:53:28

And, with the inside of the house now level with the patio,

0:53:300:53:33

Scott's able to get out unhampered.

0:53:330:53:35

So, this was the summerhouse,

0:53:370:53:38

this, when I was younger, I always used it.

0:53:380:53:41

Since I had my injury, I haven't been able to use it,

0:53:410:53:43

cos I can't get onto the grass.

0:53:430:53:44

-Yeah.

-And I can, I can get in there now.

0:53:440:53:46

-It even looks different, doesn't it?

-It's even got storage.

0:53:510:53:53

-That's amazing, isn't it?

-Yeah.

0:53:540:53:56

Now, despite all we've done in the house, Scott's a sportsman at heart.

0:53:580:54:02

So, the gym could be a game changer.

0:54:020:54:05

-Do you want to tell us what you got?

-Got a gym.

0:54:050:54:07

Thank you.

0:54:120:54:14

-Thank you.

-That's amazing.

0:54:140:54:15

-Gloucester Rugby club...

-Thank you.

-All very inspired by you.

0:54:200:54:23

They'd like to invite you up

0:54:230:54:24

to go into the director's box to meet the players,

0:54:240:54:26

cos they think you'll be a bit of an inspiration to the players,

0:54:260:54:28

-as well.

-Thank you.

-And a couple of other things.

0:54:280:54:31

You may be the only person that can read this.

0:54:310:54:33

"Difficult times need strong personalities.

0:54:350:54:39

"Train hard and achieve your dreams."

0:54:390:54:41

So, the message is written backwards for you,

0:54:420:54:45

but signed forwards, from Steve Redgrave.

0:54:450:54:48

Oh, that's amazing.

0:54:480:54:49

-Kind of cool, huh?

-Yeah.

0:54:490:54:51

There is one other thing.

0:54:510:54:53

A certificate.

0:54:530:54:54

"Scott Jones." The people who gave us all this...

0:54:540:54:57

"..is proud to represent the above individual

0:54:570:54:59

"as an official sponsored athlete.

0:54:590:55:01

Yes, along with everything else, Scott now has a sponsor.

0:55:030:55:06

HE SNIFFS

0:55:080:55:09

HE SOBS QUIETLY

0:55:100:55:12

That's amazing. You all right?

0:55:130:55:14

You have to point them out to us so we can give them a big thank you.

0:55:170:55:20

Oh...

0:55:230:55:24

-That got us.

-That's the one!

0:55:250:55:27

LAUGHTER

0:55:270:55:29

I didn't realise you'd actually do literally everything.

0:55:290:55:32

I thought you might do, like, the wet room in the bedroom,

0:55:320:55:34

but I never really thought that...

0:55:340:55:36

THIS would happen.

0:55:360:55:37

You're an inspiration, mate.

0:55:370:55:39

And everybody working on it's been really chuffed to build it for you.

0:55:390:55:42

APPLAUSE

0:55:440:55:46

What we'd like to say thank you for making his life accessible,

0:55:560:56:00

and normal, like, just every normal 17-year-old.

0:56:000:56:03

All I really wanted was a wet room,

0:56:030:56:05

that's all I wanted, I didn't really expect...

0:56:050:56:08

all this support and all this stuff to happen, I just...

0:56:080:56:10

didn't expect that.

0:56:100:56:11

All I expected with just to be able to, you know,

0:56:110:56:13

have a little bit more help with day-to-day life. But...

0:56:130:56:16

It's kind of transformed it, to be honest,

0:56:160:56:18

cos I can now do actually do what 18-year-olds,

0:56:180:56:20

or 17, 18-year-olds can take for granted,

0:56:200:56:22

and it's a massive thank you, to be honest.

0:56:220:56:24

-Now, you do realise that the next Olympics is Rio...

-Yeah.

0:56:240:56:27

-and the one after that is...

-Tokyo.

0:56:270:56:29

Yeah, and if you don't get a medal,

0:56:290:56:30

we're going to come back and take everything away again.

0:56:300:56:33

LAUGHTER

0:56:330:56:34

-Ready to meet people?

-(Yeah.)

-Sure?

0:56:350:56:37

You all right, Scott?

0:56:380:56:40

Thanks, mate.

0:56:430:56:44

-He's a little bit overwhelmed by it all.

-Honestly, it's... I...

0:56:460:56:49

Oh... It's been unbelievable.

0:56:490:56:52

You can tell Scott's a true athlete,

0:56:540:56:55

because he's been talking all week about independence,

0:56:550:56:57

and he was emotional about having a kitchen and the bathroom

0:56:570:57:00

and the bedroom,

0:57:000:57:01

but he really went when he saw the gym.

0:57:010:57:03

Isn't that incredible?

0:57:030:57:04

All these years he's wanted his independence,

0:57:040:57:06

but he's got a gym, which means he can work even harder,

0:57:060:57:08

train even harder, and maybe get that gold medal,

0:57:080:57:11

and of course all athletes need a supporting team around them,

0:57:110:57:13

it's just that Scott's got a bigger team than most.

0:57:130:57:15

They're helping him make his dreams come true.

0:57:150:57:19

So, when you think about it,

0:57:200:57:22

what they do's kind of special.

0:57:220:57:24

It's...

0:57:240:57:25

well, worth a gold medal in its own way, isn't it?
