So many young boys growing up are constantly on the go. | 0:00:02 | 0:00:05
I was always wanting to do stuff, | 0:00:05 | 0:00:06
pretty much, like, from birth, really. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
My mum told me, when I was three months old, I started swimming. | 0:00:09 | 0:00:12
Then, when I was about four, I started tag rugby. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:15
And probably about age nine, I went into athletics. | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
Commitment-wise, I would say from day one when he played sport, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
"If I'm going to play sport, I'm going to do it the best I can." | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
But no-one knows what fate has in store for them. | 0:00:27 | 0:00:29
I had three strokes in the space of five months. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
He wasn't speaking. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:37
He wasn't swallowing. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:39
He wasn't sitting up on his own. | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
That initial time, | 0:00:43 | 0:00:44
you're wondering quite what you're going to be left of him. | 0:00:44 | 0:00:47
When adversity strikes, the real challenge is how to move on. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:51
Tough for even the strongest families. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
It upsets me, because I feel like we've failed him, | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
because we should be able to provide for our own son. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
But these battles don't need to be fought alone. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
The cream of Cheltenham's trades are stepping up to help this young man | 0:01:10 | 0:01:14
gain his independence with a brand-new home. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
They'll be working around the clock | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
on one of our most ambitious builds to date. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
This is the busiest I've ever known DIY SOS Big Build. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:27
That house could quite easily fall down. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:30
When do they tear the roof off? | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
I thought we were only supposed to be patching in the roof. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
At some stage, mate, | 0:01:35 | 0:01:36
we've got to stop taking things out and start putting things in. | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
'Let's just hope we haven't bitten off more than we can chew.' | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
-I didn't expect it to be like this. -You deserve this. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:47
And everybody working on it's been really chuffed to build it for you. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:51
All the usual suspects are here, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
including the designer this week, Shaun Clarkson. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
But, as usual, we only have nine days to get the job done | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
and where are we going to find...? | 0:01:58 | 0:01:59
Mate, I'm going to have to stop you there. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:01
You always say that. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:02
You know there's going to be a massive group of people | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
-stood over there. -Let's get to them then. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
This is DIY SOS: The Big Build! | 0:02:06 | 0:02:08
THEY CHEER AND APPLAUD | 0:02:08 | 0:02:12
So, I'm going to write, "My name is Scott Jones and I'm 17." | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
Some of my writing, I write right to left, so it's backwards. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:34
At the age of 11, this remarkable young lad suffered a series | 0:02:34 | 0:02:37
of strokes that took a severe toll on his mind and his body. | 0:02:37 | 0:02:41
That's Scott's writing, reflected in the mirror so you can read it. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
So, they think this occurred due to when my brain was trying to repair | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
itself, which is common with brain injuries in children. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
Scott lives in Swindon Village, Cheltenham, with mum Liz | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
and dad Gary, a factory worker, who have been together for 37 years. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:04
We met at school and we've been together ever since, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
since 1978, December. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:08
Got married in July '84. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
After 14 years, the couple finally had Scott in 1998. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:18
Scott enjoyed an active and sporty life, but when he was ten, | 0:03:20 | 0:03:24
he started to suffer unusual symptoms. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
We spent the summer down in Cornwall with my family. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
In and out of the water the whole time. | 0:03:30 | 0:03:32
And he started to get this discharge in his ear, | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35
and I thought it was swimmer's ear. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:38
So, we went to the doctors. | 0:03:38 | 0:03:39
He just looked at it and said, "Yeah, I know what that is." | 0:03:39 | 0:03:42
And it was a cholesteatoma. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:44
A cholesteatoma is an abnormal growth inside the ear. | 0:03:46 | 0:03:51
Left untreated, it can continue to grow and damage the brain. | 0:03:51 | 0:03:55
Extracting the tumour normally consists of two operations. | 0:03:56 | 0:04:00
One to take it out, then the other one, up to a year later, | 0:04:00 | 0:04:03
to repair any potential damage. | 0:04:03 | 0:04:05
And it was the second one which he wasn't right afterwards. | 0:04:08 | 0:04:12
-He just didn't come round as much as I'd expected him to, did he? -No. | 0:04:13 | 0:04:18
It took a couple of days. He wasn't himself. | 0:04:18 | 0:04:20
And we took him home. | 0:04:20 | 0:04:21
And that day he went to school, and then he just said he felt | 0:04:21 | 0:04:24
a pop in his ear and woke up with his head on the desk | 0:04:24 | 0:04:26
and that's all we knew, wasn't it? | 0:04:26 | 0:04:28
And at this point, I was having a stroke, and I didn't know. | 0:04:29 | 0:04:32
We just couldn't find any reason for one, you know, | 0:04:33 | 0:04:35
they couldn't find a bleed. | 0:04:35 | 0:04:36
And so it was, sort of, one of those things where "We'll treat him, | 0:04:36 | 0:04:39
"but we don't know exactly what we're treating," I suppose. | 0:04:39 | 0:04:41
Over the next five months, | 0:04:43 | 0:04:44
Scott had two more strokes that severely affected his mobility. | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
That initial time, | 0:04:50 | 0:04:51
you're wondering quite what you're going to be left of him. | 0:04:51 | 0:04:54
But Scott fought back to remain active, | 0:04:54 | 0:04:57
competing in the shot put at both able-bodied and disabled events, | 0:04:57 | 0:05:01
then narrowly missing out on selection for the 2012 Paralympics. | 0:05:01 | 0:05:05
However, seizures caused his condition to worsen, | 0:05:07 | 0:05:10
and in autumn 2013, paralysed from the chest down, | 0:05:10 | 0:05:14
Scott became a full-time wheelchair user. | 0:05:14 | 0:05:16
These enormous setbacks haven't stopped Scott. | 0:05:19 | 0:05:21
His love of sport is undimmed. | 0:05:21 | 0:05:24
These are both gold medals that I won | 0:05:25 | 0:05:26
at my first international outside of the UK. | 0:05:26 | 0:05:29
Gold in the C2 shot put F32 | 0:05:29 | 0:05:31
and gold in the C2 shot put F32, 52 and 54. | 0:05:31 | 0:05:36
He topped this by winning gold at the disabled World Championships | 0:05:37 | 0:05:40
in 2013, setting a world record in the process. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:44
When he stood up on that rostrum in Lyon, that was it. | 0:05:46 | 0:05:48
That was it for me. | 0:05:50 | 0:05:51
But an injury to his throwing arm ended his shot put career. | 0:05:52 | 0:05:56
Undeterred, Scott took up rowing instead | 0:05:56 | 0:05:58
and has since made the GB development squad. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:01
ROWING MACHINE CHAINS MOVE | 0:06:02 | 0:06:04
He's fought every step of the way, | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
but he's fighting a losing battle at home, | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
which was built in the 1960s without disabled use in mind. | 0:06:12 | 0:06:15
So, as well as the narrow doors that he can barely fit through, | 0:06:16 | 0:06:20
there's a cramped kitchen that he can only use with his parents there, | 0:06:20 | 0:06:23
which is a massive blow for a lad that loves to cook on his own. | 0:06:23 | 0:06:26
I really want to cook, but I'm not allowed to, | 0:06:27 | 0:06:29
due to the oven's up here and the hobs are up here. | 0:06:29 | 0:06:32
I can't see them in the chair. | 0:06:32 | 0:06:33
And if he wants a shower, well, that involves a trip to the gym | 0:06:34 | 0:06:37
or the hospital, because the only one in the house is upstairs. | 0:06:37 | 0:06:41
There's a toilet in the corner of a cramped utility room | 0:06:42 | 0:06:45
on the ground floor, | 0:06:45 | 0:06:46
but it's difficult to get to. | 0:06:46 | 0:06:47
'I don't really want to be crawling round, | 0:06:49 | 0:06:50
'especially when I've got friends round. | 0:06:50 | 0:06:52
'You want to be able to be independent. Everyone does. | 0:06:52 | 0:06:54
'But at the same time, I can't be my own person' | 0:06:54 | 0:06:56
due to the house isn't adapted. | 0:06:56 | 0:06:57
It's a claustrophobic existence for Scott throughout the house. | 0:06:59 | 0:07:02
The garden's a no-go area. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:04
He's got a lovely summerhouse that he had | 0:07:05 | 0:07:07
where his friends used to meet. | 0:07:07 | 0:07:09
He can't get down there. | 0:07:09 | 0:07:10
Sometimes you see him wistfully looking down there, thinking, | 0:07:10 | 0:07:13
-"Oh..." -"I could escape down there." -Yeah. | 0:07:13 | 0:07:15
There used to be his little place just to go and play. | 0:07:15 | 0:07:17
'He is a brave young man who just wants some freedom, | 0:07:18 | 0:07:22
'which this house won't allow. | 0:07:22 | 0:07:24
'I think this champion deserves a break, don't you?' | 0:07:24 | 0:07:27
If I read through all this, | 0:07:27 | 0:07:29
it's actually about you having independence, isn't it? | 0:07:29 | 0:07:32
Cos you're at the stage where you want to be doing stuff for yourself, | 0:07:32 | 0:07:34
and you don't want your mum and dad... | 0:07:34 | 0:07:36
I've only got about six months till I'm 18, | 0:07:36 | 0:07:38
so I'd rather have it to get myself sorted for independence. | 0:07:38 | 0:07:40
I don't really want parents around me all the time | 0:07:40 | 0:07:42
when I'm trying to do stuff. | 0:07:42 | 0:07:43
-Although you do love them a lot. -Oh, I love them and all that. -Of course, yeah, yeah. | 0:07:43 | 0:07:46
But sometimes I want my own space to be able to do my own thing. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:49
Yeah, and I think that's not unusual for an 18-year-old, | 0:07:49 | 0:07:51
-and I think every 18-year-old feels that way. -Yeah. | 0:07:51 | 0:07:53
You're not a lad that has let the stuff get in your way. | 0:07:53 | 0:07:56
And you're busy having a go and fighting against everything, | 0:07:56 | 0:07:59
and so these guys are going to come in and try sort something out | 0:07:59 | 0:08:01
for you, mate, and give you what you need. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:04
This is getting to you a bit, isn't it? | 0:08:04 | 0:08:06
Thank you. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:08
Tradesmen from Cheltenham and its surrounds | 0:08:11 | 0:08:13
have answered our call for help. | 0:08:13 | 0:08:15
And what a turnout. | 0:08:15 | 0:08:17
They all have one goal in mind - to make this house work. | 0:08:17 | 0:08:20
APPLAUSE | 0:08:24 | 0:08:28
OK, so this is the family we're working for today. | 0:08:33 | 0:08:35
We always like you to get an opportunity to meet the client. | 0:08:35 | 0:08:38
What he wants is independence, | 0:08:38 | 0:08:39
and he's fought so hard to be an athlete | 0:08:39 | 0:08:42
and he never shies away, it's fair to say, | 0:08:42 | 0:08:44
from any of the training or any of the difficulties | 0:08:44 | 0:08:46
or the physical pain of what you're doing, | 0:08:46 | 0:08:48
-but you're finding this quite difficult to do by comparison, aren't you? -Yeah. | 0:08:48 | 0:08:51
To come out and say hello to people. | 0:08:51 | 0:08:52
Thank you. | 0:08:53 | 0:08:55
HE SOBS | 0:08:55 | 0:08:56
We'd just like to say thank you to everyone for turning up for Scott. | 0:08:56 | 0:08:59
It is overwhelming and I can see why. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:03
He is ten days away from a bit of independence. | 0:09:03 | 0:09:06
Right, let's get you underway, then. | 0:09:06 | 0:09:08
-See you later, mate. -Thank you. | 0:09:09 | 0:09:11
APPLAUSE | 0:09:11 | 0:09:13
'Right, with the family on their way, it's time to get cracking. | 0:09:16 | 0:09:20
'We have the standard nine days to complete what looks on paper | 0:09:20 | 0:09:22
'like a rather ambitious build. | 0:09:22 | 0:09:24
'So, as always, we'll have our work cut out.' | 0:09:24 | 0:09:26
I want everything from the back here from that staircase all taken out, | 0:09:27 | 0:09:31
all those walls down. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:32
Yeah. | 0:09:32 | 0:09:33 | |
As you can see, our scaffold's up and some kindly gents have | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
already laid the foundations for our timber frame extension | 0:09:36 | 0:09:40
so we don't have to stand around waiting for the concrete to dry. | 0:09:40 | 0:09:42
Speaking of which... | 0:09:43 | 0:09:44
..here is our side extension. | 0:09:45 | 0:09:47
It's early, which is great news, as we've got lots to do. | 0:09:47 | 0:09:50
The plan is to start this build from scratch, | 0:09:54 | 0:09:56
and the only way to get to scratch is to smash everything up. | 0:09:56 | 0:10:00
MUSIC: Out Of The Black by Royal Blood | 0:10:01 | 0:10:06
HAMMERS THUD AND SMASH | 0:10:06 | 0:10:07
'I'm not going to pretend we don't love this bit. | 0:10:07 | 0:10:09
'What better way of a load of blokes bonding first thing in the morning?' | 0:10:09 | 0:10:12
People say that there aren't artisans around any more. | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17
'But as random bits of house flood out and get piled higgledy-piggledy | 0:10:25 | 0:10:28
'in the skip, it starts to make my blood boil.' | 0:10:28 | 0:10:31
These skips aren't airtight. | 0:10:34 | 0:10:35
Knowlesy's going to be, "Oh, my God." | 0:10:35 | 0:10:37
We'll step away. | 0:10:37 | 0:10:38
A skip is a very expensive piece of kit. | 0:10:40 | 0:10:41
And unless you pack them so that you can get them airtight, | 0:10:41 | 0:10:44
you're wasting half your skip. | 0:10:44 | 0:10:45
TWEETING NOTIFICATION | 0:10:45 | 0:10:46
So, I get people tweeting me from all over the country now, | 0:10:46 | 0:10:49
sending me pictures of their skips that are airtight. | 0:10:49 | 0:10:51
There you go. You see, now look at the space all of a sudden. | 0:10:53 | 0:10:56
Look at this. | 0:10:56 | 0:10:57
'The house is cleared in no time, | 0:11:00 | 0:11:01
'which I like to think owes a little to my skipology. | 0:11:01 | 0:11:04
'But we've done such a great job of dismantling it, | 0:11:04 | 0:11:06
'I'm trying to work out how it's still standing. | 0:11:06 | 0:11:08
'Let me explain.' | 0:11:09 | 0:11:10
So, here's our problem, | 0:11:12 | 0:11:14
that that's our original house, | 0:11:14 | 0:11:15
and we've taken all the internal walls out that hold it apart. | 0:11:15 | 0:11:18
And what happens is, the danger is that it'll do that. | 0:11:18 | 0:11:20
That house could quite easily fall down. | 0:11:21 | 0:11:23
And these people just give us their door keys and head off and say, | 0:11:23 | 0:11:26
"Yeah, thanks very much for sorting the house out." | 0:11:26 | 0:11:29
'Yeah, we know what were doing, don't we? | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
'The short-term solution to keeping it up are acrow props, | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
'but the long-term one is rebuilding it, and for that we need a plan. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:37
'Designer! | 0:11:37 | 0:11:38
'This week we have a brand-new victim, er, designer. | 0:11:41 | 0:11:43
'More like a fashion victim, really.' | 0:11:43 | 0:11:45
-What colour socks have you got on? -What colour socks have you got on? | 0:11:47 | 0:11:50
-Orange, of course. -Orange? -Orange. -Orange. | 0:11:50 | 0:11:51
Don't ask him about his underpants. | 0:11:51 | 0:11:53
'Shaun Clarkson has an international reputation for avant-garde design, | 0:11:53 | 0:11:57
'working with both commercial and residential properties. | 0:11:57 | 0:12:00
'That's very fancy, isn't it? | 0:12:00 | 0:12:02
'Who knows what this orange opulentist is going to come up with | 0:12:02 | 0:12:06
'when he's let loose on a three-bed in Swindon Village?' | 0:12:06 | 0:12:09
-Hello, Shaun. -Hello, nice to meet you. -Yeah. | 0:12:10 | 0:12:12
-Welcome to the show. -Thank you very much. | 0:12:12 | 0:12:13
I've had a word with the boys already on this particular outfit. | 0:12:13 | 0:12:16
-And what do they say? -They think you got dressed in the dark. | 0:12:16 | 0:12:18
-Yes, I still think I'm 23. -THEY LAUGH | 0:12:18 | 0:12:20
-Is that what the 23-year-olds are wearing at the moment? -I think so, yes. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:23
Wait till the colours go on the wall. | 0:12:23 | 0:12:25
The outfit reflects the colours. | 0:12:25 | 0:12:26
Well, we did say at least one thing, one of my big bugbears | 0:12:26 | 0:12:28
is that designers are constantly putting grey on the walls. | 0:12:28 | 0:12:31
-I presume we're not having any grey on the walls? -No. | 0:12:31 | 0:12:33
I've got a bit of an issue about grey as well, actually. | 0:12:33 | 0:12:35
I think it's overused. It's a great foil for other colours. | 0:12:35 | 0:12:39
SHAUN LAUGHS | 0:12:39 | 0:12:40
Already I like this man. | 0:12:40 | 0:12:41
'And I like the look of the plan, as well. | 0:12:41 | 0:12:44
'The ground floor as we currently know it will no longer exist. | 0:12:45 | 0:12:48
'Only the living room stays put. | 0:12:48 | 0:12:50
'The old dining room makes way for a modified kitchen, | 0:12:50 | 0:12:53
'with lower worktops and appliances | 0:12:53 | 0:12:54
'that Scott, who loves to cook, can reach. | 0:12:54 | 0:12:57
'The biggest change is the stairs, | 0:12:58 | 0:12:59
'which will now face the front of the house. | 0:12:59 | 0:13:01
'There's lots more space downstairs, and with widened doorways, | 0:13:01 | 0:13:04
'Scott will have the freedom to move around. | 0:13:04 | 0:13:06
'All this extra space is because of our side extension, | 0:13:07 | 0:13:10
'which will house a storage room for Scott's chairs | 0:13:10 | 0:13:13
'and, most importantly, a new bedroom, | 0:13:13 | 0:13:15
'with ensuite wet room so he'll no longer need to shower | 0:13:15 | 0:13:18
'at the hospital or gym. | 0:13:18 | 0:13:20
'Upstairs, the new stairs will give us a bigger landing | 0:13:20 | 0:13:23
'and enough space to build a sewing room for Liz | 0:13:23 | 0:13:26
'And the bedroom, spare room and master bedroom | 0:13:26 | 0:13:29
'will all be brand spanking new.' | 0:13:29 | 0:13:31
From a design point of view, | 0:13:32 | 0:13:34
there needs to be a story throughout the house that all fits together. | 0:13:34 | 0:13:37
'OK, so the jury may be out on his dress sense, | 0:13:37 | 0:13:40
'but I like his perspective. | 0:13:40 | 0:13:41
'Bringing Shaun's vision to life out back is a garden designer | 0:13:44 | 0:13:46
'who may have overlooked something.' | 0:13:46 | 0:13:49
-I notice there's a digger. -There is a digger, yeah. | 0:13:50 | 0:13:52
We've got some clearing to do. We're taking all the turf off. | 0:13:52 | 0:13:55
But once we've built our extension... | 0:13:55 | 0:13:57
Yeah, it's all going to have to stay in there, | 0:13:57 | 0:13:59
so we're going to have to... | 0:13:59 | 0:14:00
-Make a feature of the digger. Nice. -No, no. | 0:14:00 | 0:14:02
THEY LAUGH | 0:14:02 | 0:14:03
-Not of the digger. -Looks good(!) | 0:14:03 | 0:14:04
Hopefully we'll get the digger back out. | 0:14:04 | 0:14:06
-All right, well, I'd better think about that. -OK. | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
'With the house now deemed stable, Billy's electricians are in. | 0:14:10 | 0:14:14
'But the man himself is sporting an injury.' | 0:14:14 | 0:14:16
I call it white finger. | 0:14:16 | 0:14:18
When you've done all your tendons through the years of chiselling | 0:14:18 | 0:14:21
and this vibration and it's just damaged that. | 0:14:21 | 0:14:25
'Use your left hand for a while. I find that often helps. | 0:14:25 | 0:14:28
'I think we're going to regret letting Julian loose | 0:14:30 | 0:14:32
'on that digger in the garden.' | 0:14:32 | 0:14:33
Dust? | 0:14:34 | 0:14:35 | |
So, basically, considering we're not doing much of the garden, | 0:14:35 | 0:14:38
-they're doing quite a lot. -Yeah. | 0:14:38 | 0:14:39
From here, there's nothing left of the garden. | 0:14:39 | 0:14:41
'The problem is you put Julian in one of those machines | 0:14:43 | 0:14:45
'and he gets digger-happy.' | 0:14:45 | 0:14:47
Rhubarb! | 0:14:48 | 0:14:49
Oh! | 0:14:55 | 0:14:56 | |
Sugar! Plenty of sugar! | 0:14:57 | 0:14:58
I'll tell you what, we'll keep that. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:01
Pick it all, we'll have a rhubarb crumble tonight. | 0:15:01 | 0:15:03
'Isn't it poisonous raw? I'm sure it is.' | 0:15:04 | 0:15:06
-You have devastated our garden. -I haven't, he has. | 0:15:08 | 0:15:11
She told me to do it. I'm scared of her. | 0:15:11 | 0:15:13
-AMERICAN ACCENT: -She's small, but she's wild. | 0:15:13 | 0:15:15
Small but wild! | 0:15:15 | 0:15:17
Well, all I can say is good luck, I hope you get finished on time. | 0:15:17 | 0:15:20
'Ignore him, honestly. Gardens take time to come together. | 0:15:21 | 0:15:24
'Besides, you have a good-looking plan. | 0:15:24 | 0:15:26
'There'll be a brand-new patio that's flush with the inside | 0:15:28 | 0:15:31
'so Scott can get out there. | 0:15:31 | 0:15:33
'We're laying new turf, with new flowers around the borders | 0:15:33 | 0:15:35
'for Scott's mum Liz, who's a keen gardener. | 0:15:35 | 0:15:38
'The summer house stays for its sentimental value. | 0:15:38 | 0:15:41
'Winding down throughout is a resin bound gravel path, | 0:15:41 | 0:15:44
'which will let Scott into the garden | 0:15:44 | 0:15:46
'for the first time in five years. | 0:15:46 | 0:15:48
'The path leads down to a brand-new workout room for Scott, | 0:15:48 | 0:15:51
'so no more twice-daily trips to the gym with Mum. | 0:15:51 | 0:15:55
'It's brilliant. | 0:15:55 | 0:15:56
'Four hours in and the framework for the side extension | 0:15:57 | 0:15:59
'is up in record time. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:01
'What they really need is for me to get in there and slow them down.' | 0:16:02 | 0:16:05
You've kind of almost built it already. | 0:16:07 | 0:16:08
-You've got the two ends on. -Yeah. | 0:16:08 | 0:16:10
-Yeah. -It's all right? -Yeah, it's going well. | 0:16:10 | 0:16:11
-Where do you want to be by the end of today? -Finished. | 0:16:11 | 0:16:14
-Truro's a long way to drive back. -You're not from Truro. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:16
-You're Cornish boys? -Yeah. -Cornish boys. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:20
Very welcome - and join us. | 0:16:20 | 0:16:22
That's a long way to come. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:24
How come you've come out all the way up here to do this, then? | 0:16:24 | 0:16:26
We're a small family business down in Cornwall, we got the call, | 0:16:26 | 0:16:29
so we decided we'd come up and... | 0:16:29 | 0:16:30
-You fancied having a go? -Yeah. | 0:16:30 | 0:16:32
-Is it what you expected to be? -Yeah. It's good. I like it. -It's fun. | 0:16:32 | 0:16:35
'Amazing. | 0:16:36 | 0:16:37
'That's a 400-mile round trip to install an extension | 0:16:37 | 0:16:40
'for nothing other than the benefit to Scott. | 0:16:40 | 0:16:42
'So, whilst they get on with it, | 0:16:43 | 0:16:44
'Scott's about to put in a shift of his own down at the gym. | 0:16:44 | 0:16:47
'Yes, his strict training regime has to continue | 0:16:47 | 0:16:50
'regardless of what's going on at the house.' | 0:16:50 | 0:16:53
We're off to the University Of Gloucestershire. | 0:16:54 | 0:16:56
I'm going to head on to the gym, | 0:16:56 | 0:16:57
so it's going to be indoor rowing today. | 0:16:57 | 0:16:59
I started rowing in November for recreational fun | 0:16:59 | 0:17:03
and then I went to the British Indoor Championships | 0:17:03 | 0:17:05
and came second in the arms-only class. | 0:17:05 | 0:17:08
Then after that, I started to take it a lot more seriously. | 0:17:08 | 0:17:10
At the moment, because he's not at college, I'm taking him every day. | 0:17:12 | 0:17:16
This will be the first of two trips here today, | 0:17:17 | 0:17:20
and they are essential to maintain Scott's progress. | 0:17:20 | 0:17:23
He throws himself into everything. | 0:17:25 | 0:17:27
I think if he sets his mind to it, he's got a goal, he will go for it. | 0:17:27 | 0:17:30
And we've seen that in his athletics. | 0:17:30 | 0:17:32
And we're now seeing it in his rowing. | 0:17:32 | 0:17:34
It's nice to see the way that he is improving, | 0:17:35 | 0:17:38
and he's enjoying it, as well. | 0:17:38 | 0:17:40
'If I hadn't had sport, then I wouldn't be where I am now. | 0:17:41 | 0:17:44
'And the reason I carry on is I want a Paralympic gold medal. | 0:17:44 | 0:17:47
'There's no doubts about that. | 0:17:47 | 0:17:48
'If I won a Paralympic gold, I'd want a second one' | 0:17:48 | 0:17:51
to prove I've done it, | 0:17:51 | 0:17:52
and I'd want a third one and it just carries on going. | 0:17:52 | 0:17:54
What an amazing lad. | 0:17:55 | 0:17:57
Things are looking sturdier on-site, | 0:17:59 | 0:18:01
which is more than I can say for our Jurassic spark. | 0:18:01 | 0:18:03
-That can hurt cos of pressure there. -But here? -Yes! There. | 0:18:05 | 0:18:08
-How old are you now? -I'm going on a bit. Yeah. | 0:18:08 | 0:18:11
There comes a time, Bill, where you've just got to accept | 0:18:11 | 0:18:13
-that, you know... -What's up with you? | 0:18:13 | 0:18:15
The world's caught up with you a little bit, that's all. | 0:18:15 | 0:18:17
-It's, you know... -Put me and you together. | 0:18:17 | 0:18:20
-You when we first started 16 years ago. -Yeah? | 0:18:20 | 0:18:23
And put me now, I am the only one that hasn't aged. | 0:18:23 | 0:18:27
There's more changing Jules, Chris and yourself... | 0:18:27 | 0:18:29
I'll tell you what, here's a picture of Jules when we started. | 0:18:29 | 0:18:32
'And here he is now.' | 0:18:33 | 0:18:34
So, that's not a great deal of difference, is it? | 0:18:36 | 0:18:38
Here's a picture of Christopher. | 0:18:39 | 0:18:40
'And Chris today?' | 0:18:41 | 0:18:42
-Flipping hell, what happened to him? -I know! | 0:18:44 | 0:18:46
That is frightening, isn't it? | 0:18:46 | 0:18:48
And here's a picture of me. | 0:18:48 | 0:18:50
'In my mum's fleece. | 0:18:50 | 0:18:51
'And now? | 0:18:52 | 0:18:53
'Uh-oh.' | 0:18:53 | 0:18:54
-Actually, I've aged bad as well, haven't I? -No, I can't say you have. | 0:18:55 | 0:18:58
Here's a picture of Bill when we first started. | 0:18:58 | 0:19:00
And Billy today... | 0:19:00 | 0:19:03
He's tampered with the pictures. | 0:19:03 | 0:19:05
To be honest, there's not a great deal of change. | 0:19:05 | 0:19:07
-There ain't. -HE MOUTHS | 0:19:07 | 0:19:09
-What? -Nothing, nothing, nothing. -No? | 0:19:09 | 0:19:12
As the day draws to a close, | 0:19:14 | 0:19:15
electrical and plumbing works are underway, almost all the new windows | 0:19:15 | 0:19:19
are in upstairs, and the side extension is up, believe it or not. | 0:19:19 | 0:19:23
But it's now trapping several tonnes of rubbish | 0:19:23 | 0:19:25
in the back garden. Oh, and Julian...and his digger. | 0:19:25 | 0:19:28
Other than that, it's been a great day. | 0:19:28 | 0:19:30
Well, this is our extension. Big, isn't it? | 0:19:30 | 0:19:32
Behind this wall is another room, | 0:19:32 | 0:19:35
which we can't get to until we knock a door in to. | 0:19:35 | 0:19:37
Let me show you what's going on inside. | 0:19:37 | 0:19:40
Well, not going on, going out. Everything in the entire house. | 0:19:40 | 0:19:42
Look at the downstairs. Everything's gone other than the chimney breast. | 0:19:42 | 0:19:46
If you come round this way, | 0:19:46 | 0:19:48
there is a hole here where the stairs used to be. | 0:19:48 | 0:19:50
We decided to take those out. | 0:19:50 | 0:19:51
I'd like to show you upstairs, but we can't, cos we can't get up there. | 0:19:51 | 0:19:54
We have to put in a new staircase, which we're going to do tomorrow. | 0:19:54 | 0:19:57
People don't think about doing this kind of thing because it costs... | 0:19:57 | 0:20:00
Well, actually, only £200 for a new set of stairs. Why wouldn't you? | 0:20:00 | 0:20:02
-What are you doing? -We haven't quite finished. | 0:20:02 | 0:20:04
We've got to put a set of stairs in, cos if we don't have them | 0:20:04 | 0:20:06
in tonight no-one is going upstairs tomorrow to do any work. | 0:20:06 | 0:20:09
That's a very good point. We'll see you tomorrow. | 0:20:09 | 0:20:12
Sometimes you just have to take steps. | 0:20:13 | 0:20:15
NICK CHUCKLES | 0:20:15 | 0:20:16
The next morning, I meet up with Gary in the village hall, | 0:20:18 | 0:20:21
where he and Liz had their wedding reception over 30 years ago. | 0:20:21 | 0:20:25
Since then, the couple have been through thick and thin together. | 0:20:25 | 0:20:29
You don't have to answer this, just from a father's point of view, | 0:20:31 | 0:20:34
how have you dealt with all of this, | 0:20:34 | 0:20:36
because it's not the way you expect the world to go for your boy, is it? | 0:20:36 | 0:20:40
No. Em... | 0:20:42 | 0:20:44
Sometimes you think, "Why me?" | 0:20:44 | 0:20:47
Other times you think, | 0:20:47 | 0:20:48
"Well, if it's me, someone else doesn't have to go through it." | 0:20:48 | 0:20:51
But it's slightly different when it's your son. He has had dark days. | 0:20:51 | 0:20:55
-Yeah. -I suppose we all do, don't we? | 0:20:55 | 0:20:59
Dealing with Scott's injuries have been a massive challenge, | 0:20:59 | 0:21:02
but before he was even born, Liz was diagnosed with leukaemia. | 0:21:02 | 0:21:06
She'd gone in for a laparoscopy just to see why we couldn't conceive. | 0:21:09 | 0:21:13
She had a phone call within hours saying, | 0:21:14 | 0:21:17
"You've got an appointment at the Cheltenham Cobalt Unit." | 0:21:17 | 0:21:19
She's thinking, "You've got the wrong person." | 0:21:19 | 0:21:22
-That's well-known around here as a cancer unit, is it? -Yeah. -OK. | 0:21:22 | 0:21:24
Erm... | 0:21:24 | 0:21:27
She just called in there and was diagnosed with a form of leukaemia. | 0:21:27 | 0:21:32
At one stage, she was given three weeks to live, | 0:21:32 | 0:21:36
or take a new drug. | 0:21:36 | 0:21:37
So she said, "There isn't a choice. | 0:21:39 | 0:21:40
"I'll take the drug which is untested." | 0:21:40 | 0:21:43
Of all the guinea pigs, she's the only one still alive. | 0:21:43 | 0:21:46
Is that right? She's the only one that pulled through? | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
Out of ten, she's the only one. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:51
How much of a...? | 0:21:51 | 0:21:52
You said that Liz had an enormous determination to fight | 0:21:52 | 0:21:55
through her leukaemia before Scott came along. | 0:21:55 | 0:21:58
Has she shown that same strength and resolve all the time | 0:21:58 | 0:22:02
while looking after Scott as well? | 0:22:02 | 0:22:05
The majority, yes. | 0:22:05 | 0:22:07
But we all have good days and bad days. | 0:22:07 | 0:22:10
She is a strong person. She is determined, just like he is. | 0:22:13 | 0:22:16
I think that's where he gets it from. | 0:22:16 | 0:22:18
More than me. | 0:22:18 | 0:22:19
My glass is half empty. | 0:22:21 | 0:22:23
Hers is half full. | 0:22:23 | 0:22:24
Well, Gary, let's see if we can help, in some small way, | 0:22:26 | 0:22:28
to fill that glass up. | 0:22:28 | 0:22:29
Back at the house... | 0:22:32 | 0:22:34
..the steels have arrived, but although I'm not around | 0:22:35 | 0:22:38
to lend my usual assistance, they go in quickly and with relative ease. | 0:22:38 | 0:22:42
-Do you know why that went quite well? -Knowlesy weren't here, was he? | 0:22:42 | 0:22:46
That's why it went well. | 0:22:48 | 0:22:50
I do have feelings, you know. | 0:22:50 | 0:22:51
The sparks are now flying unhindered, | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
and our new extension is getting bricked up. | 0:22:55 | 0:22:58
Pressure is on, big fella. That door is coming tomorrow. | 0:22:59 | 0:23:02
Yep, I'm there, I promise. | 0:23:02 | 0:23:04
Yes, the little fella is right, it's already starting to feel like | 0:23:04 | 0:23:08
no matter how fast we work, the jobs keep piling up. | 0:23:08 | 0:23:12
We've still got all the plumbing and electrics | 0:23:12 | 0:23:14
to go into the floor down here. | 0:23:14 | 0:23:15
We've got the steels to build up over there. | 0:23:15 | 0:23:17
Now we've got a porch to build as well. | 0:23:17 | 0:23:19
We're actually behind where we normally are. | 0:23:19 | 0:23:22
If you think we've got problems inside, outside there's ten tonnes | 0:23:22 | 0:23:26
of rubbish and two tonnes of digger trapped in the garden. | 0:23:26 | 0:23:30
But a low rumble in the distance heralds the arrival | 0:23:30 | 0:23:34
of what could be a giant solution. | 0:23:34 | 0:23:36
Is it a truck? Is it a train? | 0:23:36 | 0:23:40
No, it's a crane, and we love 'em. | 0:23:40 | 0:23:43

In no time at all, | 0:23:56 | 0:23:57
this king of on-site machinery has made light work of our rubbish bags, | 0:23:57 | 0:24:01
with each one weighing in at just under a tonne. | 0:24:01 | 0:24:04
That's no mean feat. Just look at it go! | 0:24:04 | 0:24:07
Look at him up there, living every man's dream. | 0:24:10 | 0:24:13
What did you want to be when you grew up? | 0:24:13 | 0:24:15
A crane driver. | 0:24:15 | 0:24:16
There you have it! He wanted to be a crane driver. Of course he did. | 0:24:18 | 0:24:22
Julian doesn't seem to be having as much fun. | 0:24:22 | 0:24:24
I'm guessing that's because he knows his digger | 0:24:24 | 0:24:26
is next to go over the top. All two tonnes of it. | 0:24:26 | 0:24:29

-Fancy a cup of tea in the meantime? -Yeah, let's have one. | 0:25:17 | 0:25:20
Now the garden's clear, landscaping can resume. | 0:25:22 | 0:25:25
Back inside, Shaun wants to outline his vision for the kitchen. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:31
Currently, the kitchen is sitting where we're standing. | 0:25:31 | 0:25:35
One of the things that Scott said was that he couldn't cook, | 0:25:35 | 0:25:37
so we've got a split-level kitchen - | 0:25:37 | 0:25:39
one with a sink with a gap underneath and a hot plate | 0:25:39 | 0:25:42
and an oven at his level. | 0:25:42 | 0:25:44
Also, we've got an ordinary oven at eye level | 0:25:44 | 0:25:47
and a hob for his mum to cook as well, | 0:25:47 | 0:25:49
so the two of them can cook together or he can be independent. | 0:25:49 | 0:25:52
Right. There's a couple of things you missed out on the kitchen. | 0:25:52 | 0:25:55
-What's that? -Water and electric. | 0:25:55 | 0:25:57
Yes, we've moved it quite dramatically. | 0:25:57 | 0:25:59
There's no drains in the house here. | 0:25:59 | 0:26:01
-No. -So we've had to lift the floor. Look, he's digging this out. | 0:26:01 | 0:26:05
Well, I really hope it's going to be worth it. | 0:26:07 | 0:26:09
Of course it'll be worth it. | 0:26:09 | 0:26:11
See, that's why we all love designers as builders. | 0:26:13 | 0:26:17
Good job everyone here sees the bigger picture. | 0:26:17 | 0:26:19
We're going to watch him go in there, it's going to be great. | 0:26:19 | 0:26:21
So rewarding to see something... | 0:26:21 | 0:26:23
We're going to get something for what we're putting in. | 0:26:23 | 0:26:25
As well as rowing for his country, | 0:26:25 | 0:26:27
Scott plays wheelchair rugby league for Swindon St George. | 0:26:27 | 0:26:31
He's invited Billy and Julian along for a training session. | 0:26:31 | 0:26:35
This should be funny. | 0:26:35 | 0:26:37
All right, Scott? | 0:26:38 | 0:26:39
Scott, you all right? | 0:26:39 | 0:26:40
-So this is it? -Yeah, this is it. | 0:26:40 | 0:26:43
We're playing wheelchair rugby league today. | 0:26:43 | 0:26:45
For a couple of year I was told I would never play rugby again. | 0:26:45 | 0:26:48
I didn't know the sport until last year. | 0:26:48 | 0:26:50
I might be in wheels, but it's not much different. | 0:26:50 | 0:26:52
I tell you what? You're a terrific kid. You're a terrific kid. | 0:26:52 | 0:26:56

I'm not sure they know what they've let themselves in for here. | 0:27:10 | 0:27:13
This game is played at a fierce tempo and involves...Some big hits. | 0:27:13 | 0:27:18
Where's the exit? | 0:27:19 | 0:27:21
It's not for the faint-hearted. | 0:27:21 | 0:27:22
Be gentle with them, they haven't finished building the house yet. | 0:27:22 | 0:27:25

but it's not the building fairies - there's a simpler explanation. | 0:29:03 | 0:29:07
It's all about preparation and setting things up ready to go. | 0:29:07 | 0:29:11
This morning, we were in first thing, muck was on - bang! | 0:29:11 | 0:29:14

-Boilers. -OK. | 0:29:31 | 0:29:32
Mystery solved, thank goodness, but soon another one looms - | 0:29:34 | 0:29:38
the digger we lifted out the garden yesterday has somehow reappeared. | 0:29:38 | 0:29:42
What's going on?! | 0:29:42 | 0:29:44
What the...? What-what? What... What?! | 0:29:49 | 0:29:52
Where did...? How? | 0:29:52 | 0:29:54
All I can say is, when I walked in this morning, it was already here. | 0:29:54 | 0:29:58
Julian, you can't get the thing...out! | 0:29:58 | 0:30:01
But it wasn't finished with. | 0:30:03 | 0:30:06
-He's up to something. -Oh, no, he's definitely done something. | 0:30:06 | 0:30:08
-I've got lots of digging to do. -Yeah, I bet you have. -Carry on. | 0:30:08 | 0:30:12
Julian! | 0:30:13 | 0:30:15
I mean, great builder, but he's no magician. | 0:30:15 | 0:30:17
How did the digger get back into the garden? | 0:30:17 | 0:30:20
Well, he's on the shovel from here on in. | 0:30:21 | 0:30:24
-Fancy a cup of tea in the meantime? -Love one. Let's have one. | 0:30:24 | 0:30:28

-Hello, mate. -Hello, mate. Are you all right? | 0:30:31 | 0:30:33

-Hmm... Not really. -Do you like cakes? | 0:30:37 | 0:30:39
-How about if I was to bribe you with that bad boy? -That would do nicely. | 0:30:39 | 0:30:42

He's not right, is he, really? | 0:30:56 | 0:30:57
The final mystery du jour is we're three days in, | 0:30:59 | 0:31:02
and by now the house should be teeming with plasterers, | 0:31:02 | 0:31:05
but there don't seem to be any in sight. | 0:31:05 | 0:31:07
How many plasterers have you got on today? | 0:31:10 | 0:31:13
I've got loads, but nothing's ready to be plastered. | 0:31:13 | 0:31:16
-Can we not plasterboard upstairs yet? -No. | 0:31:16 | 0:31:18
-The electricians still in there? -About an hour. About an hour away. | 0:31:18 | 0:31:20
It's going to be a big plasterboarding party, isn't it? | 0:31:20 | 0:31:22
-It's hundreds of metres, actually, isn't it? -Yeah. Yeah. | 0:31:22 | 0:31:27
Behind on day three is not a good place to be. | 0:31:27 | 0:31:29
Mind you, it's better than being behind on day nine. | 0:31:29 | 0:31:32
-There, come on, now. -I'm good to go, I'm good to go. | 0:31:32 | 0:31:35
Sometimes when we're up against it, | 0:31:35 | 0:31:37
it's nice to be reminded how we got here in the first place. | 0:31:37 | 0:31:39
Rhys is Scott's best mate, | 0:31:41 | 0:31:43
and his younger sister Morgan nominated him for DIY SOS. | 0:31:43 | 0:31:46
Seeing what he's like in his home, it wasn't right. | 0:31:48 | 0:31:52
We just didn't feel that it was right for him, | 0:31:52 | 0:31:55
cos his parents can't be around to help him forever. | 0:31:55 | 0:31:58
At some point, he needs to be able to do stuff for his own, | 0:31:58 | 0:32:01
even if that is just making his lunch, | 0:32:01 | 0:32:03
which he can't do at the moment, | 0:32:03 | 0:32:05
cos he can't get his chair around the kitchen properly. | 0:32:05 | 0:32:09
He doesn't want people to feel sorry for him. | 0:32:09 | 0:32:11
He hates that, he absolutely hates it. | 0:32:11 | 0:32:13
He doesn't like if... | 0:32:14 | 0:32:16
If he's in his chair, he doesn't like it if you bend down to him. | 0:32:16 | 0:32:19
So what we do is if he's sitting on the floor and we're in the kitchen, | 0:32:19 | 0:32:22
we just sit on the floor with him. | 0:32:22 | 0:32:24
If you look up the road now, | 0:32:24 | 0:32:26
there's 80 people working on the house, | 0:32:26 | 0:32:28
cos you guys wrote in to get the help that you needed, | 0:32:28 | 0:32:31
so how are you feeling now it's happening? | 0:32:31 | 0:32:34
-Overwhelmed. -It's just amazing. | 0:32:34 | 0:32:36
Years, he's wanted an independence. | 0:32:37 | 0:32:40
Finally being able to have it, I reckon it'll be amazing for him. | 0:32:40 | 0:32:45
But I do think he will be a little bit overwhelmed. | 0:32:45 | 0:32:48
Back at the house, upstairs, | 0:32:48 | 0:32:49
Chris is a changed man and his plasterers are working up a sweat. | 0:32:49 | 0:32:54
-Feel the heat? -Yeah, body heat. | 0:32:56 | 0:32:58
We've seen big trowels in our time, but that one... | 0:32:58 | 0:33:01
-I'm not boasting, but I have got a six-foot one. You've not. -I have. | 0:33:01 | 0:33:04
-I've never seen you use it. -Well, I wouldn't on this, would I? -Why not? | 0:33:04 | 0:33:09
I don't want to damage it. | 0:33:09 | 0:33:10
Unbelievable. | 0:33:11 | 0:33:13
The feel-good factor continues when I catch up with Pete, | 0:33:13 | 0:33:16
a family friend, downstairs. | 0:33:16 | 0:33:18
My kids went to the same school as Scott did. | 0:33:18 | 0:33:21
We knew him before he was poorly, | 0:33:21 | 0:33:22
before the family had all their troubles, basically. | 0:33:22 | 0:33:26
Very, very lovely family. | 0:33:26 | 0:33:27
If this was going on across the road, | 0:33:27 | 0:33:29
-they'd be the first people to help. -Would they? | 0:33:29 | 0:33:31
They would. Scott is such an inspiration. | 0:33:31 | 0:33:34
But Gary and Liz seem amazing people, as well. | 0:33:34 | 0:33:37
They're just head down, got on, supported Scott and just graft. | 0:33:37 | 0:33:40
They're so busy dealing with the day-to-day, bless them, you know... | 0:33:40 | 0:33:44
That's what parents do, I suppose, but in this instance, | 0:33:44 | 0:33:47
they just keep doing it and more. | 0:33:47 | 0:33:49
I don't know how this family have kept so calm and just carried on. | 0:33:49 | 0:33:53
My hunch is it has a lot to do with Liz's determination, | 0:33:56 | 0:33:59
in spite of her own suffering. | 0:33:59 | 0:34:01
Before Scott even came along, you were very seriously ill. | 0:34:03 | 0:34:06
I mean, I was very poorly. But I was still determined to hang on to life. | 0:34:06 | 0:34:11
I never once was going to give up. I think that's just me. | 0:34:11 | 0:34:14
I'm just like that. | 0:34:14 | 0:34:15
After that as well, when Scott was six months old, | 0:34:15 | 0:34:18
I had problems with my jaw, they found a lump in my jaw. | 0:34:18 | 0:34:21
-That was cancerous in the jaw, as well, was it? -Yeah. | 0:34:21 | 0:34:25
I had 24 operations over a seven-year period, | 0:34:25 | 0:34:27
so I now have chronic pain, so if I eat anything, | 0:34:27 | 0:34:30
the pain is just... Well, excruciating. | 0:34:30 | 0:34:33
It goes right down my back and right down to the spine and into the... | 0:34:33 | 0:34:36
But how do you deal with that | 0:34:36 | 0:34:38
on top of everything else that you've got going on? | 0:34:38 | 0:34:41
I just do. | 0:34:41 | 0:34:43
It's just our way, I suppose. | 0:34:43 | 0:34:45
The other thing that's most impressive, | 0:34:45 | 0:34:47
and everyone finds really impressive about Scott, | 0:34:47 | 0:34:49
-is his absolute determination. -Hmm. | 0:34:49 | 0:34:51
-There must have been dark times. -There have been. | 0:34:51 | 0:34:53
There's been anger, as well, | 0:34:53 | 0:34:55
-but you've got to let them get it out, haven't you? -Hmm. | 0:34:55 | 0:34:58
Sometimes it's been turned on us, as well, more so me, I think, | 0:34:58 | 0:35:00
because I'm the one that's always there. | 0:35:00 | 0:35:04
Which has been the toughest thing to deal with - your leukaemia | 0:35:04 | 0:35:07
-and then cancer of the jaw or... Scott. -..the damage to Scott? | 0:35:07 | 0:35:10
Definitely Scott, because as a mum, | 0:35:10 | 0:35:13
you want to take it on yourself, don't you? | 0:35:13 | 0:35:16
If I could have been in his place, I would have done. | 0:35:16 | 0:35:18
We were watching the athletics and he forgot that he couldn't walk. | 0:35:18 | 0:35:21
He just tried to stand up and just went splat to the floor. | 0:35:21 | 0:35:25
That's heartbreaking, isn't it? | 0:35:27 | 0:35:29
How can you forget? | 0:35:30 | 0:35:31
You know, he was in the moment, I suppose, and he... | 0:35:31 | 0:35:34
Does that upset you, to think he has to deal with that every day? | 0:35:34 | 0:35:36
Yeah, yeah. | 0:35:36 | 0:35:37
Yeah. | 0:35:39 | 0:35:41 | |
He's very, very...Determined that you guys should get some space | 0:35:41 | 0:35:44
and get to do the things you want to do. | 0:35:44 | 0:35:46
-But he never says that. -Families don't, do they? | 0:35:46 | 0:35:49
No. No, I don't suppose you talk about that sort of thing, do you? | 0:35:49 | 0:35:52
-Do you have any hobbies? -I love dress-making, sewing, anything. | 0:35:52 | 0:35:55
-Do you? -Yeah. -I'm not sure there's enough room | 0:35:55 | 0:35:57
in the place with all the things that we're doing. | 0:35:57 | 0:35:59
As long as I've got a dining room table, | 0:35:59 | 0:36:01
-I can put my sewing machine on. -Put it on that. That's a thought. | 0:36:01 | 0:36:03
Right. | 0:36:03 | 0:36:05
We need to do the best for this family, | 0:36:05 | 0:36:07
and it's nice to know that we've got something up our sleeves | 0:36:07 | 0:36:09
for Liz, as well. | 0:36:09 | 0:36:11
When I get back to the house, it feels like things are coming on. | 0:36:13 | 0:36:17
At least we're actually getting to the stage | 0:36:17 | 0:36:19
where we're starting to put stuff back in rather than take stuff out. | 0:36:19 | 0:36:21
What are you looking at? When did they take the roof off? | 0:36:21 | 0:36:24
I thought we were only supposed to be patching in the roof! | 0:36:24 | 0:36:27
They've taken the whole flipping thing off. | 0:36:27 | 0:36:29
At some stage, mate, we've got to stop taking things out and off... | 0:36:29 | 0:36:33
-I know. -..and start putting things in, because... | 0:36:33 | 0:36:35
These people are brilliant, | 0:36:35 | 0:36:37
they just really want to give them a perfect house. | 0:36:37 | 0:36:39
The tiles have passed their sell-by date, really, | 0:36:41 | 0:36:43
so we put on a new breathable membrane | 0:36:43 | 0:36:44
and we're going to put on some new tiles. | 0:36:44 | 0:36:46
Effectively, you've got a brand-new roof on a brand-new build, really. | 0:36:46 | 0:36:50
OK, fair enough, it's just another example of our builders going | 0:36:52 | 0:36:55
the extra mile, or ten miles - but we are up against it. | 0:36:55 | 0:36:58
Every aspect of this job seems to be soaking up valuable time - | 0:37:01 | 0:37:04
for instance, getting rid of this summer house | 0:37:04 | 0:37:06
would have made our lives easier, because it's in the way. | 0:37:06 | 0:37:09
But it has sentimental value, so we've kept it. | 0:37:09 | 0:37:11
That means moving it...four times. | 0:37:11 | 0:37:14
Come on, let's grab hold of it and lift it. | 0:37:16 | 0:37:18
Moving a shed once is a pain, even with this many men. | 0:37:20 | 0:37:23
To you. To me. | 0:37:23 | 0:37:25
Although this lot do make it look easy. | 0:37:31 | 0:37:33
This is great, cos you can just paint these in, | 0:37:36 | 0:37:39
and then, if they feel like moving it again, | 0:37:39 | 0:37:41
they can just move it around the garden. | 0:37:41 | 0:37:43
With just four days left now to complete the build, | 0:37:43 | 0:37:46
our kitchen has finally arrived. | 0:37:46 | 0:37:48
There are a few base units in, | 0:37:48 | 0:37:50
but there's a lot to do in very little time. | 0:37:50 | 0:37:53
We've just got to stretch the hours in the day to get it done, | 0:37:53 | 0:37:56
that's all. | 0:37:56 | 0:37:57
Everyone's happy to do that. | 0:37:57 | 0:37:59
I know people think we make this up, but, really, we are up against it | 0:37:59 | 0:38:03
and we've hit a snag in Scott's wet room. | 0:38:03 | 0:38:05
With a shower where you have the gully in the floor, | 0:38:05 | 0:38:08
it needs to be set so the water will go into the drain | 0:38:08 | 0:38:11
rather than go out the door, | 0:38:11 | 0:38:13
so there has to be a slight fall | 0:38:13 | 0:38:14
and you need to have a tray where it will do it for you, | 0:38:14 | 0:38:18
so basically that was our afterthought. | 0:38:18 | 0:38:20
So we'll have to dig out two inches of concrete | 0:38:22 | 0:38:24
then re-concrete back to the right height for one to fit in. | 0:38:24 | 0:38:28
Two words - time consuming. | 0:38:29 | 0:38:32
Things have moved on in the kitchen, but as it's being custom-built, | 0:38:35 | 0:38:38
there's plenty of detail to finalise. | 0:38:38 | 0:38:41
Right, so we've got that one there. | 0:38:41 | 0:38:43
You've got a two ring hob on that side. | 0:38:43 | 0:38:45
'So why are we hand-building the kitchen | 0:38:45 | 0:38:47
'and doing all these fiddly bits? | 0:38:47 | 0:38:49
'Because we're building it specifically to meet Scott's needs.' | 0:38:49 | 0:38:54
Basically, this house is being built from scratch, | 0:38:54 | 0:38:56
because we completely gutted it. | 0:38:56 | 0:38:58
We put a new extension on, we rewired it, | 0:38:58 | 0:39:01
we've replumbed it, we've put a central heating system into it. | 0:39:01 | 0:39:05
We've got to do the garden, we've got to do the driveway, | 0:39:05 | 0:39:07
we've got to walk out the door and give this back | 0:39:07 | 0:39:09
so that it works for Scott. | 0:39:09 | 0:39:11
It's a massive ask. | 0:39:11 | 0:39:12
'It's a massive ask, but we never throw in the towel. | 0:39:14 | 0:39:17
'Well, we have a good example in Scott, don't we? He never does. | 0:39:17 | 0:39:20
'The way that he's overcome so many obstacles | 0:39:20 | 0:39:23
'to pursue his sporting dreams is an inspiration to us all. | 0:39:23 | 0:39:27
'I caught up with him down at the gym to find out | 0:39:28 | 0:39:30
'how he stays so positive.' | 0:39:30 | 0:39:32
So, now, how hard are you training to try and make the Rio Olympics? | 0:39:34 | 0:39:37
Tokyo and 2020's the main goal for us, | 0:39:37 | 0:39:39
because I'll be 22 and I'll be fully developed, | 0:39:39 | 0:39:41
because my muscles aren't fully developed yet. | 0:39:41 | 0:39:44
So you're currently committing yourself to just over | 0:39:44 | 0:39:46
five and a half years of training twice a day? | 0:39:46 | 0:39:49
Yeah, six days a week. | 0:39:49 | 0:39:50
-That's a lot of training, mate. -Yeah. | 0:39:50 | 0:39:53
Do you ever think you've been dealt a rough hand in life? | 0:39:53 | 0:39:56
I know I have had problems in the past, | 0:39:56 | 0:39:59
but you can't really change them. | 0:39:59 | 0:40:00
Because if you carry on and you grieve, | 0:40:00 | 0:40:02
it's going to be with you for life. | 0:40:02 | 0:40:04
Whereas, if you just let it go, it's gone. | 0:40:04 | 0:40:07
And do you think you've actually managed to do that, let it go? | 0:40:07 | 0:40:09
I'm trying to, yeah. In the mornings, I try and stand up, | 0:40:09 | 0:40:12
sometimes I fall on the floor. | 0:40:12 | 0:40:14
Because in my dreams, I'm walking, I'm running around. | 0:40:14 | 0:40:16
Next thing you know, I'm trying to get out of bed | 0:40:16 | 0:40:18
and I'll face-plant the floor. | 0:40:18 | 0:40:20
Wow. | 0:40:20 | 0:40:22 | |
So your brain is playing tricks on you, | 0:40:24 | 0:40:27
trying to stop you... | 0:40:27 | 0:40:28
It's almost fighting you getting used to it. | 0:40:29 | 0:40:32
It's quite common with a lot of the athletes. | 0:40:32 | 0:40:35
As well as the difficulties you're facing on a day-to-day basis, | 0:40:35 | 0:40:38
it's kind of been tough on your mum, too. | 0:40:38 | 0:40:41
Yeah, physically, because she's about 5'8, I'm 6'5, | 0:40:41 | 0:40:44
so there's a big height difference, and she's probably about 58 kilos. | 0:40:44 | 0:40:47
I'm at least 85, so she has to help me | 0:40:47 | 0:40:50
with lifting quite a lot at the moment. | 0:40:50 | 0:40:53
And she's got quite a lot of pain anyway. | 0:40:53 | 0:40:55
What is it that really frustrates you at the moment? | 0:40:57 | 0:41:00
Little things, like everyday life. | 0:41:00 | 0:41:02
You're like, "Oh, I can do that, I can do that" | 0:41:02 | 0:41:04
then I'm there, like, "Actually, I can't." | 0:41:04 | 0:41:07
I love cooking, yet I'm not allowed to because I can't feel my legs, | 0:41:07 | 0:41:11
and if I pour stuff on my legs, I won't know. | 0:41:11 | 0:41:13
Not being in a chair is extremely hard to explain. | 0:41:15 | 0:41:18
Independence is something that you had beforehand, | 0:41:18 | 0:41:20
you try and get it back again. It's not easy to explain at all. | 0:41:20 | 0:41:24
And what's the little shed at the bottom of the garden? | 0:41:24 | 0:41:27
It used to be where I used to go before my injury, | 0:41:27 | 0:41:30
my own little haven. | 0:41:30 | 0:41:32
So that shed's fairly important? | 0:41:32 | 0:41:34
Yeah. | 0:41:34 | 0:41:35 | |
I don't know whether we can find one the same | 0:41:35 | 0:41:37
now that we've put it in a skip. | 0:41:37 | 0:41:39
'At the house, we're throwing everything - | 0:41:43 | 0:41:46
'and I mean everything and the bathroom sink at it - | 0:41:46 | 0:41:48
'trying to get on track.' | 0:41:48 | 0:41:50
It's getting crazy. | 0:41:52 | 0:41:54
This is the busiest I've ever known a DIY SOS Big Build | 0:41:55 | 0:41:59
at this stage of the build. | 0:41:59 | 0:42:00
Everyone walking down there, look, floor layers... | 0:42:00 | 0:42:02
Trying to put a membrane down. It's just absolutely crazy. | 0:42:02 | 0:42:07
It's been hard work. There's tilers, there's painters, | 0:42:07 | 0:42:10
electricians, there's plumbers. | 0:42:10 | 0:42:12
Everyone is working around each other | 0:42:12 | 0:42:14
and, you know, we're all doing it at the same time. | 0:42:14 | 0:42:18
'There's still a mountain to climb in the garden, | 0:42:18 | 0:42:20
'but we're making steady progress.' | 0:42:20 | 0:42:22
The patio's down here, the path's in. | 0:42:23 | 0:42:26
They've laid all the steps round here. | 0:42:26 | 0:42:28
It's absolutely beautiful. And they've carried the path | 0:42:28 | 0:42:30
all the way up through the garden and then it's like - bingo! | 0:42:30 | 0:42:33
'And, ladies and gentlemen, the piece de resistance... | 0:42:33 | 0:42:36
'somewhere for Scott to train. There's a way to go, | 0:42:36 | 0:42:39
'but when the gym equipment's in, it all starts to take shape.' | 0:42:39 | 0:42:42
Obviously, it's been really hard for us to design this, | 0:42:42 | 0:42:45
because, obviously, we're trying to look at it from his point of view. | 0:42:45 | 0:42:48
So we think we've done a good job. | 0:42:48 | 0:42:50
LAUGHTER | 0:42:50 | 0:42:52
You don't get many of them after a grandson. | 0:42:52 | 0:42:54
'Look at them! All trying to get in on the act. | 0:42:56 | 0:43:00
'There are still units to install, paths to lay | 0:43:00 | 0:43:02
'and cables to box, but Shaun, our designer, | 0:43:02 | 0:43:05
'is totally oblivious.' | 0:43:05 | 0:43:07
Great, that's lovely. The colours come out really nicely. | 0:43:07 | 0:43:10
'Colours?' | 0:43:10 | 0:43:11
Yeah, sorry, slight change of plan. | 0:43:11 | 0:43:14
I think we should continue the line over the architrave... | 0:43:14 | 0:43:17
-OK, all right. -..of the colour. So with the light colour that half. | 0:43:17 | 0:43:20
All right, I'll sort it next. | 0:43:20 | 0:43:22
-Thank you. -No problem. -Sorry about changing things at the last minute. | 0:43:22 | 0:43:25
'And so you should be! We're under the most pressure | 0:43:25 | 0:43:27
'we've ever been under on a build, | 0:43:27 | 0:43:29
'and the new boy's worried about painting in half a door. | 0:43:29 | 0:43:32
'Although, to be fair, that sort of attention to detail | 0:43:32 | 0:43:34
'does make this one stand out a bit.' | 0:43:34 | 0:43:36
-A lot of electronics in here... -Yes. -..connected to... | 0:43:38 | 0:43:41
Well, can be connected to his smartphone or tablet. | 0:43:41 | 0:43:43
Yeah, it's all connected through a lighting system, via Raco units, | 0:43:43 | 0:43:46
which are controlled by his iPad or iPhone. | 0:43:46 | 0:43:50
Depends on what mood he's in, he can change it up or down, | 0:43:50 | 0:43:53
or alter it himself. | 0:43:53 | 0:43:54
-Yeah. -It's all clever stuff. -Yeah. | 0:43:54 | 0:43:56
'Only viewers under the age of 35 understood that. | 0:43:56 | 0:43:59
'Path servicing is not quite as technical | 0:43:59 | 0:44:01
'but essential for providing Scott's step-free access | 0:44:01 | 0:44:04
'from the kerb right to his front door.' | 0:44:04 | 0:44:06
Why are we wallpapering the ceiling? | 0:44:06 | 0:44:08
Because I think if you sit on the sofa and you're lying back, | 0:44:08 | 0:44:10
you've got something nice to look at. | 0:44:10 | 0:44:12
Is there any of this job where you thought, | 0:44:12 | 0:44:14
"That probably is going to take a long time | 0:44:14 | 0:44:17
-"and be quite difficult, I need to compromise here"? -No. | 0:44:17 | 0:44:19
'That's designers for you. | 0:44:21 | 0:44:22
'Thanks to Shaun, there's plenty of last-minute dressing to do. | 0:44:22 | 0:44:25
'So it looks like this one's going right down to the wire. | 0:44:25 | 0:44:28
'Nine days ago, Scott Jones was barely getting by | 0:44:30 | 0:44:32
'in this house.' | 0:44:32 | 0:44:34
You want to be able to be independent | 0:44:34 | 0:44:36
and actually be in control of your own life. | 0:44:36 | 0:44:38
I get quite frustrated and sometimes upset about it, | 0:44:38 | 0:44:40
because I want to be my own person but at the same time, | 0:44:40 | 0:44:42
I can't be my own person due to house isn't adapted. | 0:44:42 | 0:44:45
'A world-class athlete who couldn't shower in his own home. | 0:44:45 | 0:44:49
'His parents were at their wits' end.' | 0:44:51 | 0:44:54
It upsets me because I feel like we failed him | 0:44:54 | 0:44:57
because we should be able to provide for our own son. | 0:44:57 | 0:45:01
'But this house just wasn't built to accommodate someone | 0:45:01 | 0:45:04
'with a serious disability. | 0:45:04 | 0:45:05
'The doorways were too narrow for a wheelchair. | 0:45:05 | 0:45:08
'Everything was the wrong height in the kitchen for a young man | 0:45:08 | 0:45:11
'who loves to cook. | 0:45:11 | 0:45:12
'The upstairs bathroom and garden were inaccessible | 0:45:12 | 0:45:15
'and a lack of space throughout the house meant Scott | 0:45:15 | 0:45:18
'was often confined to his makeshift bedroom. | 0:45:18 | 0:45:21
'With nothing adapted to his needs, Scott was almost totally dependent | 0:45:21 | 0:45:24
'on his parents. | 0:45:24 | 0:45:26
'Which is where the local community stepped in with a bit | 0:45:29 | 0:45:31
'of brute force and TLC. | 0:45:31 | 0:45:34
'They've put in an epic shift to turn things around.' | 0:45:34 | 0:45:37
Yeah, it makes you feel good that you're doing it. | 0:45:39 | 0:45:42
Scott's a good lad, so it's nice to give a bit back | 0:45:43 | 0:45:46
and help out where you can. | 0:45:46 | 0:45:48
'The team have transformed a cramped downstairs living area | 0:45:55 | 0:45:58
'into a modern, open-plan living space | 0:45:58 | 0:46:01
'that's fully wheelchair accessible. | 0:46:01 | 0:46:04
'The kitchen has moved to the back of the house | 0:46:04 | 0:46:06
'and contains an island that's modified for Scott. | 0:46:06 | 0:46:09
'With low, accessible worktops, | 0:46:09 | 0:46:11
'he can get under and prepare his own meals, | 0:46:11 | 0:46:14
'gaining some of the independence he desperately craves. | 0:46:14 | 0:46:17
'With widened doors down here, Scott now has the freedom to roam. | 0:46:17 | 0:46:21
'He no longer needs to be confined to his bedroom - | 0:46:21 | 0:46:24
'but it's a far better place to be now. | 0:46:24 | 0:46:27
'We've created a refuge | 0:46:27 | 0:46:28
'where an athlete can get in the right headspace for competing. | 0:46:28 | 0:46:32
'Patio doors provide direct access to the garden, | 0:46:32 | 0:46:35
'which has previously been out of bounds for Scott. | 0:46:35 | 0:46:39
'Next to his bedroom is a new wet room. | 0:46:39 | 0:46:41
'Scott now no longer needs to leave home | 0:46:41 | 0:46:44
'to take a shower. | 0:46:44 | 0:46:45
'Flipping the direction of the stairs | 0:46:45 | 0:46:47
'has delivered more space upstairs. | 0:46:47 | 0:46:50
'All the rooms are new. Also, Mum and Dad's bedroom | 0:46:50 | 0:46:53
'is soundproofed so Gary can get some uninterrupted kip | 0:46:53 | 0:46:56
'during the day when he's been working nights. | 0:46:56 | 0:46:59
'We've also created a sewing room for Liz | 0:46:59 | 0:47:01
'to enjoy some of that downtime, as Scott needs to rely on her less. | 0:47:01 | 0:47:05
'It's her little treat. | 0:47:05 | 0:47:07
'There's been a complete garden makeover, | 0:47:09 | 0:47:12
'and this all-weather path makes it fully accessible to Scott | 0:47:12 | 0:47:15
'for the first time in years. So he can get down to his new gym, | 0:47:15 | 0:47:19
'where he can train as many times as he wants a day, | 0:47:19 | 0:47:22
'without Liz having to ferry him around. | 0:47:22 | 0:47:25
'It's wonderful, and it's time to show the family their new home. | 0:47:26 | 0:47:30
'Now, this is going to be a lot for Scott to take in. | 0:47:37 | 0:47:39
'Since his injuries, | 0:47:39 | 0:47:41
'he sometimes struggles with absorbing information immediately. | 0:47:41 | 0:47:44
'But I'm pretty sure that once it all sinks in | 0:47:44 | 0:47:46
'that he'll love what we've done.' | 0:47:46 | 0:47:49
Right, that's the last bump you're going to have. | 0:47:49 | 0:47:51
So have a look up. | 0:47:51 | 0:47:53
Oh. | 0:47:53 | 0:47:54 | |
This is your new front door. | 0:47:59 | 0:48:00
What do you reckon? | 0:48:00 | 0:48:02
-It's wide enough. -Yes. | 0:48:02 | 0:48:04
Hob. | 0:48:27 | 0:48:28 | |
I can reach it. | 0:48:28 | 0:48:30
To the left, oven door. | 0:48:30 | 0:48:31
Pull it down. Slide it in. | 0:48:31 | 0:48:34
Also, what's the other big problem if you cook, what's the danger? | 0:48:34 | 0:48:37
Legs. | 0:48:37 | 0:48:38 | |
-Because, if you... -Oh, thank you! | 0:48:38 | 0:48:41
If you put stuff that's boiling on your legs, you don't notice. | 0:48:41 | 0:48:44
So you could do yourself damage. | 0:48:44 | 0:48:45
You want to try on your new apron? | 0:48:45 | 0:48:47
Over your legs, that bit round your head. | 0:48:48 | 0:48:50
Just want to demonstrate this for a minute. | 0:48:50 | 0:48:52
Tuck it in. Go on. | 0:48:52 | 0:48:54
Now, when you cook, | 0:48:55 | 0:48:56
even if you spill something on you, no damage. | 0:48:56 | 0:48:59
-Heat resistant. -Thank you. | 0:48:59 | 0:49:01
-You're a proper chef, mate, in your own kitchen. -I can cook, yeah! | 0:49:02 | 0:49:05
That was kind of a big deal, wasn't it? | 0:49:05 | 0:49:07
Yeah, it is. | 0:49:08 | 0:49:10
Fridge. | 0:49:12 | 0:49:13
Yes, cos you're cooking chilli con carne tonight, for your family. | 0:49:13 | 0:49:16
Yeah, I am, yeah. | 0:49:16 | 0:49:17
It's a bit surreal at the moment, | 0:49:23 | 0:49:24
because when I left this house, I could barely get in. | 0:49:24 | 0:49:27
And now I can get in the house, | 0:49:27 | 0:49:28
I can get through the doors, | 0:49:28 | 0:49:30
and I can actually, properly, now, I can cook, | 0:49:30 | 0:49:32
and I actually get to show my parents that I can do something. | 0:49:32 | 0:49:35
-Will you have your mates over? -Yeah, I can. | 0:49:35 | 0:49:37
You can cook for them. | 0:49:37 | 0:49:38
You can all eat at the table. | 0:49:38 | 0:49:40
And then, you can show them your new room. | 0:49:40 | 0:49:43
Yeah. | 0:49:43 | 0:49:44 | |
Thank you. | 0:49:58 | 0:49:59
-I don't have to worry about getting stuck in the door. -No. | 0:50:04 | 0:50:07
Or destroying it. | 0:50:07 | 0:50:08
Mate, there isn't a place in the house | 0:50:08 | 0:50:10
you need to worry about getting stuck any more. | 0:50:10 | 0:50:12
-The whole house is yours again. -Thank you. | 0:50:12 | 0:50:14
From the front kerb of the road, to the bottom of the garden, | 0:50:14 | 0:50:16
-you can get everywhere. -Thank you. | 0:50:16 | 0:50:18
-You all right? -Yeah. | 0:50:22 | 0:50:24
(Yeah, I'm fine.) | 0:50:25 | 0:50:27
Let me show you some cool stuff. Your... Your tablet, whatever, | 0:50:27 | 0:50:30
we've linked it up to your lighting system, | 0:50:30 | 0:50:32
so you can actually turn the lighting off on here, | 0:50:32 | 0:50:34
so if I press off... | 0:50:34 | 0:50:35
Everything goes down and disappears. | 0:50:35 | 0:50:37
If you want to go back on... | 0:50:37 | 0:50:39
And then... | 0:50:39 | 0:50:40
you go into relax mode. | 0:50:40 | 0:50:41
-It's a lot to take in, isn't it? -Yeah, it is. | 0:50:45 | 0:50:47
And I know that I'm supposed to be giving you time | 0:50:47 | 0:50:49
to assimilate this quietly. | 0:50:49 | 0:50:50
Yeah. | 0:50:50 | 0:50:51 | |
How cool is that? | 0:50:58 | 0:50:59
It's brilliant! | 0:50:59 | 0:51:00
I can move it up and down as well. | 0:51:00 | 0:51:02
Yeah. | 0:51:02 | 0:51:03 | |
There's also a remote control you can see on the wall there. | 0:51:03 | 0:51:06
It connects to the remote control over here, | 0:51:06 | 0:51:08
so you're coming in in the morning, press the button, | 0:51:08 | 0:51:11
it flashes red until it hits the temperature that you've preset. | 0:51:11 | 0:51:13
It flashes, it tells you when it's up to speed, and you come in. | 0:51:13 | 0:51:16
-Is it all right? -Yes, it's all right. | 0:51:19 | 0:51:21
It's all change upstairs, as well, | 0:51:24 | 0:51:25
with a few additions requested by Scott for Gary and Liz. | 0:51:25 | 0:51:29
Oh. | 0:51:32 | 0:51:33 | |
Wow. | 0:51:33 | 0:51:34 | |
That's fantastic. | 0:51:36 | 0:51:37
That's lovely. | 0:51:39 | 0:51:41
That's fantastic. | 0:51:41 | 0:51:42
You'll notice that it's very quiet, | 0:51:42 | 0:51:44
because not only have you got new windows and doors | 0:51:44 | 0:51:46
throughout the whole house, | 0:51:46 | 0:51:47
we've also soundproofed the entire room, because you work shifts. | 0:51:47 | 0:51:50
-That's amazing. -That... | 0:51:50 | 0:51:52
-That'll be so much better. -That's really thoughtful. | 0:51:52 | 0:51:54
-Thank you. -Silence is golden. -Yeah. -Oh, it is when you work nights. | 0:51:54 | 0:51:57
LAUGHTER | 0:51:57 | 0:51:58
Now, in amongst talking to you about what Scott needed, | 0:51:59 | 0:52:02
what you might not have known is we were also talking to Scott | 0:52:02 | 0:52:05
about what you guys needed. | 0:52:05 | 0:52:06
So, there's one door left, | 0:52:06 | 0:52:08
and we'd kind of like you to just pop into that door, | 0:52:08 | 0:52:10
through that door, and see what's left. It's not massive, but it's... | 0:52:10 | 0:52:13
something Scott asked for specifically for you. | 0:52:13 | 0:52:15
SHE GASPS | 0:52:15 | 0:52:16
Thank you. | 0:52:21 | 0:52:23
Oh... | 0:52:23 | 0:52:24 | |
It's got all my bits and pieces in, as well. | 0:52:24 | 0:52:26
Thank you very much. | 0:52:26 | 0:52:27
-He's not a bad boy, is he? -He's not a bad boy at all, is he?! -Oh... | 0:52:29 | 0:52:32
SHE SNIFFS | 0:52:34 | 0:52:35
Thank you for my sewing room. | 0:52:38 | 0:52:41
It's lovely. Are you all right? | 0:52:41 | 0:52:42
Thank you very much. | 0:52:42 | 0:52:44
-It's all right. -Very thoughtful. | 0:52:44 | 0:52:45
-And my soundproofing! -Oh, yeah, God! | 0:52:46 | 0:52:49
-Oops. -You all right? -Yeah, I'm good. | 0:52:50 | 0:52:52
-Are you sure? -Yeah. | 0:52:52 | 0:52:54
-You've had too many hills to climb up... -Yeah. | 0:52:54 | 0:52:56
-..haven't you, really? As a family. -Yeah, the highs have been high, | 0:52:56 | 0:52:59
-but then the lows have been really low, haven't they, Scott? -Yeah. | 0:52:59 | 0:53:02
-They're going to get better, aren't they? -Yeah. -Yeah. | 0:53:02 | 0:53:04
Especially in there. | 0:53:04 | 0:53:05
-Amazing. -Yeah. | 0:53:05 | 0:53:07
It is a lot to take in, isn't it? | 0:53:07 | 0:53:08
-Yeah. -A lot. | 0:53:08 | 0:53:10
The way we've completely transformed the inside of this house | 0:53:11 | 0:53:14
is going to provide Gary, Liz and Scott | 0:53:14 | 0:53:17
with a brand-new lease of life. | 0:53:17 | 0:53:18
What we've done in the back garden... | 0:53:18 | 0:53:20
will help them even more. | 0:53:20 | 0:53:22
SHE GASPS | 0:53:24 | 0:53:25
That is amazing. | 0:53:27 | 0:53:28
And, with the inside of the house now level with the patio, | 0:53:30 | 0:53:33
Scott's able to get out unhampered. | 0:53:33 | 0:53:35
So, this was the summerhouse, | 0:53:37 | 0:53:38
this, when I was younger, I always used it. | 0:53:38 | 0:53:41
Since I had my injury, I haven't been able to use it, | 0:53:41 | 0:53:43
cos I can't get onto the grass. | 0:53:43 | 0:53:44
-Yeah. -And I can, I can get in there now. | 0:53:44 | 0:53:46
-It even looks different, doesn't it? -It's even got storage. | 0:53:51 | 0:53:53
-That's amazing, isn't it? -Yeah. | 0:53:54 | 0:53:56
Now, despite all we've done in the house, Scott's a sportsman at heart. | 0:53:58 | 0:54:02
So, the gym could be a game changer. | 0:54:02 | 0:54:05
-Do you want to tell us what you got? -Got a gym. | 0:54:05 | 0:54:07
Thank you. | 0:54:12 | 0:54:14
-Thank you. -That's amazing. | 0:54:14 | 0:54:15
-Gloucester Rugby club... -Thank you. -All very inspired by you. | 0:54:20 | 0:54:23
They'd like to invite you up | 0:54:23 | 0:54:24
to go into the director's box to meet the players, | 0:54:24 | 0:54:26
cos they think you'll be a bit of an inspiration to the players, | 0:54:26 | 0:54:28
-as well. -Thank you. -And a couple of other things. | 0:54:28 | 0:54:31
You may be the only person that can read this. | 0:54:31 | 0:54:33
"Difficult times need strong personalities. | 0:54:35 | 0:54:39
"Train hard and achieve your dreams." | 0:54:39 | 0:54:41
So, the message is written backwards for you, | 0:54:42 | 0:54:45
but signed forwards, from Steve Redgrave. | 0:54:45 | 0:54:48
Oh, that's amazing. | 0:54:48 | 0:54:49
-Kind of cool, huh? -Yeah. | 0:54:49 | 0:54:51
There is one other thing. | 0:54:51 | 0:54:53
A certificate. | 0:54:53 | 0:54:54
"Scott Jones." The people who gave us all this... | 0:54:54 | 0:54:57
"..is proud to represent the above individual | 0:54:57 | 0:54:59
"as an official sponsored athlete. | 0:54:59 | 0:55:01
Yes, along with everything else, Scott now has a sponsor. | 0:55:03 | 0:55:06
HE SNIFFS | 0:55:08 | 0:55:09
HE SOBS QUIETLY | 0:55:10 | 0:55:12
That's amazing. You all right? | 0:55:13 | 0:55:14
You have to point them out to us so we can give them a big thank you. | 0:55:17 | 0:55:20
Oh... | 0:55:23 | 0:55:24 | |
-That got us. -That's the one! | 0:55:25 | 0:55:27
LAUGHTER | 0:55:27 | 0:55:29
I didn't realise you'd actually do literally everything. | 0:55:29 | 0:55:32
I thought you might do, like, the wet room in the bedroom, | 0:55:32 | 0:55:34
but I never really thought that... | 0:55:34 | 0:55:36
THIS would happen. | 0:55:36 | 0:55:37
You're an inspiration, mate. | 0:55:37 | 0:55:39
And everybody working on it's been really chuffed to build it for you. | 0:55:39 | 0:55:42
APPLAUSE | 0:55:44 | 0:55:46
What we'd like to say thank you for making his life accessible, | 0:55:56 | 0:56:00
and normal, like, just every normal 17-year-old. | 0:56:00 | 0:56:03
All I really wanted was a wet room, | 0:56:03 | 0:56:05
that's all I wanted, I didn't really expect... | 0:56:05 | 0:56:08
all this support and all this stuff to happen, I just... | 0:56:08 | 0:56:10
didn't expect that. | 0:56:10 | 0:56:11
All I expected with just to be able to, you know, | 0:56:11 | 0:56:13
have a little bit more help with day-to-day life. But... | 0:56:13 | 0:56:16
It's kind of transformed it, to be honest, | 0:56:16 | 0:56:18
cos I can now do actually do what 18-year-olds, | 0:56:18 | 0:56:20
or 17, 18-year-olds can take for granted, | 0:56:20 | 0:56:22
and it's a massive thank you, to be honest. | 0:56:22 | 0:56:24
-Now, you do realise that the next Olympics is Rio... -Yeah. | 0:56:24 | 0:56:27
-and the one after that is... -Tokyo. | 0:56:27 | 0:56:29
Yeah, and if you don't get a medal, | 0:56:29 | 0:56:30
we're going to come back and take everything away again. | 0:56:30 | 0:56:33
LAUGHTER | 0:56:33 | 0:56:34
-Ready to meet people? -(Yeah.) -Sure? | 0:56:35 | 0:56:37
You all right, Scott? | 0:56:38 | 0:56:40
Thanks, mate. | 0:56:43 | 0:56:44
-He's a little bit overwhelmed by it all. -Honestly, it's... I... | 0:56:46 | 0:56:49
Oh... It's been unbelievable. | 0:56:49 | 0:56:52
You can tell Scott's a true athlete, | 0:56:54 | 0:56:55
because he's been talking all week about independence, | 0:56:55 | 0:56:57
and he was emotional about having a kitchen and the bathroom | 0:56:57 | 0:57:00
and the bedroom, | 0:57:00 | 0:57:01
but he really went when he saw the gym. | 0:57:01 | 0:57:03
Isn't that incredible? | 0:57:03 | 0:57:04
All these years he's wanted his independence, | 0:57:04 | 0:57:06
but he's got a gym, which means he can work even harder, | 0:57:06 | 0:57:08
train even harder, and maybe get that gold medal, | 0:57:08 | 0:57:11
and of course all athletes need a supporting team around them, | 0:57:11 | 0:57:13
it's just that Scott's got a bigger team than most. | 0:57:13 | 0:57:15
They're helping him make his dreams come true. | 0:57:15 | 0:57:19
So, when you think about it, | 0:57:20 | 0:57:22
what they do's kind of special. | 0:57:22 | 0:57:24
It's... | 0:57:24 | 0:57:25
well, worth a gold medal in its own way, isn't it? | 0:57:25 | 0:57:27 |
